- 0:28All right, welcome to Local Legends here with me, Jess.
- 0:32And I have a very special guest with me today, Miss Heather Harvey.
- 0:37Yeah, I'm so happy you're here.
- 0:39Thank you for saying yes to coming on here.
- 0:41Thank you for having me.
- 0:41You are a local legend.
- 0:43I'll tell you why you're a local legend.
- 0:44Okay.
- 0:45We'll get into what you do, but on Wednesdays, I travel probably about an hour.
- 0:52It takes me to get to that networking group, Dinosaur Mountain.
- 0:56And when you are there, the energy is completely shifted.
- 1:00Like you are just this bright light of just great energy.
- 1:06And I just want to thank you.
- 1:07So that's like when you text me there that you weren't coming, I'm like, shit.
- 1:11You just you bring so much to that.
- 1:13So I just want you to know I there's no way I'm the only one feeling that.
- 1:17I think everyone feels that.
- 1:18So when you're not there, it's different.
- 1:20Um, and secondly, you're a local legend here because of what you do.
- 1:25Um, I don't know many people that care and are deeply as passionate as you are about helping people.
- 1:35Like I I consider myself a helper because I love people and I love helping on the mortgage side.
- 1:40I love being on a podcast and bringing people like you have this special type of like love for people and just the passion you have is is cool and you should be celebrated.
- 1:52So that's why Aaron, you're on here.
- 1:54So I want you to just tell my audience and you know, everyone listening, just what you do, like what you're set out to do, what your goal in life is to do right now in your current position.
- 2:07Oof.
- 2:07Sorry, put you on the spot.
- 2:09I knew you did.
- 2:10My goal is uh to bridge between the loved one and um the the senior and their family, whether their family is here or whether their family is back in New York.
- 2:24Okay.
- 2:24Um, acting like a bridge and helping to facilitate optimal independence and safety in the home.
- 2:30Nobody wants to leave their home.
- 2:31Right.
- 2:32Um, and as an occupational therapist that worked in home health for almost two decades, I saw that there was these areas that needed to be patched.
- 2:42Um, and you're not really allowed the time to do a thorough job because you have boxes to check off and you have parameters and metrics to fill for the government, for your employer.
- 2:58And I was always that person that took more than the time that was needed to actually do a thorough job.
- 3:05Um, that's not really looked favorable upon in corporate America.
- 3:10Yeah, yeah.
- 3:10They're probably like, hurry frig up, you have another client.
- 3:14Let's go.
- 3:14Yeah.
- 3:14Yeah.
- 3:15And so I decided through all of these years, and then my recent stint in hospice for nearly three years that I want to go and patch that hole, fill those holes, help bring families back together again.
- 3:29I'm Generation X.
- 3:30So as soon as I could get out of my house, I was out.
- 3:33Right.
- 3:33Gone.
- 3:34Right.
- 3:34Like my mom and dad are like, don't you?
- 3:36No, I'm out.
- 3:37No, I'm out.
- 3:37Done.
- 3:38Yeah.
- 3:38Um, and now my parents are aging.
- 3:40They're in Florida because New Yorkers go to Florida.
- 3:42They do not like Arizona.
- 3:44They think it's ugly.
- 3:46Um I'm like, but you could go to Sun Lakes.
- 3:49It's exactly.
- 3:50There's still water here.
- 3:52No, it's not the same.
- 3:53Nope.
- 3:54Um, so there's this disconnect, and I'm seeing it with my friends starting to call.
- 3:59Like, what am I supposed to do?
- 4:00I've I haven't been home in 20 years, or I don't even know what's going on with my parents.
- 4:05And um, it can be something as basic as my mom's breath smells like my great aunts used to.
- 4:11Right.
- 4:12Yeah.
- 4:12And I'm just like, oh, it's time for oral care and to have that conversation.
- 4:17And truly, I think it's because we are not communicating.
- 4:21Um, Gen X is fiercely independent.
- 4:23Yep.
- 4:24Their boomer parents are saying, you know what?
- 4:27I'm a little embarrassed about how maybe I acted when you were growing up, or how maybe I wasn't there.
- 4:33Totally.
- 4:34Um, and so instead of the communication, there's just that drift and that ambiguity, and then something happens.
- 4:43And so then you're in crisis mode and there's emotion and all of this taking place, right?
- 4:50That's not the time for the communication.
- 4:52That's not the time to make those decisions.
- 4:54Those decisions needed to have been made a lot earlier.
- 4:57Yeah.
- 4:58So in my paradigm of home health, I realized that prevention is where it's at.
- 5:04Yeah.
- 5:04And it's not going to be for everybody.
- 5:06And um, I'm a blunt person, New Yorker.
- 5:10I'm not going to sugarcoat it.
- 5:12I'm going to tell you how it is.
- 5:14I'm also going to help protect your autonomy and your independence and work with you.
- 5:20So I, there's, what do they call it?
- 5:23Like your standards of practice.
- 5:25I'm trying to think of the words.
- 5:27I can't think of the words right now, but evidence-based practice.
- 5:30Okay.
- 5:30Huge in the medical community.
- 5:32So we've been doing evidence-based practice.
- 5:35Use your walker.
- 5:36Okay.
- 5:37I've been doing that for 30 years.
- 5:38And guess what?
- 5:39Grandma won't use her walker.
- 5:41And she falls and breaks her hip.
- 5:42And then everyone's life is up here, like just completely unearthed.
- 5:46Right.
- 5:47And then family is trying to figure out how am I going to get from New York to Arizona?
- 5:53And I've got to get a flight.
- 5:54And I have to do FMLA and who's going to take my kids to football practice.
- 5:59All of this is going on.
- 6:00Then they're on a flight and then they're here.
- 6:02And then they're trying to navigate mom's home health because she's home now, with the dog biting the physical therapist and the phone ringing off the hook while she has a Zoom call for her corporate job.
- 6:14Right.
- 6:15That is what's going to happen.
- 6:16And it's the silver tsunami that's coming.
- 6:19Yeah.
- 6:20So I'm just trying to figure out a way to get that information out there to people that you need to get with your parent.
- 6:27You need to have a plan.
- 6:28Yep.
- 6:28You need to talk to your parent more often.
- 6:31And it should be a video call.
- 6:33And unfortunately, even with the video call, you're not going to see the entire environment.
- 6:38Right.
- 6:39You're not going to see the piles of papers, the pan on the stove that's burned.
- 6:44Yeah.
- 6:44None of that.
- 6:45Yeah.
- 6:45So I'm hopeful with this new job venture that I will be able to help put out some people's fires.
- 6:52So now what's your company called?
- 6:54Celebrations across the miles.
- 6:56Okay.
- 6:56And then there's an adage after that I can't think of right now.
- 7:01Okay.
- 7:01Because in the midst- So brand new.
- 7:03So you can't no one could be upset that you don't remember this.
- 7:07You literally just launched this.
- 7:09I did.
- 7:09And then last night, my husband, who has been in police academy at 50 years old, um, he's been struggling.
- 7:16Yeah.
- 7:16So he comes home and he's like, I don't know, man.
- 7:19And I'm like, no, not both of us.
- 7:20We can't, right?
- 7:21Someone has to be stable here.
- 7:23So I get up, 3:30 in the morning, he's sound asleep.
- 7:26I get down chat GPT, Gemini.
- 7:30Oh, thank God.
- 7:31Going back and forth.
- 7:32And then I'm getting mad at them.
- 7:33Yeah.
- 7:33You told me this and you told me that.
- 7:35And then I just had to throw it down and figure it out for myself.
- 7:38Yeah.
- 7:39Yeah.
- 7:39Yeah.
- 7:40Wow.
- 7:42Special thank you to Justin Lis from State Farm.
- 7:45Justin is our sponsor here at Local Legends with Jess and Jay.
- 7:49His mission is simple.
- 7:50He treats customers like family, provides real solutions, ensures every client feels confident, supported, and genuinely cared for.
- 7:58That level of intention and service is exactly why he's considered one of our favorite local legends here in Arizona.
- 8:04We're grateful for the support and proud to highlight Justin and his team for truly making a difference in our community.
- 8:13So how do we get your site at like how do people contact you?
- 8:18Who is your ideal client?
- 8:20How do they get in contact?
- 8:21Like, you know, how do they get in touch with you?
- 8:24My ideal client is truthfully somebody who's proactive and preventative.
- 8:28Okay.
- 8:29So I personally am proactive and preventative.
- 8:32So someone like me, yeah.
- 8:33Somebody who's going to go for hormone therapy, even though standard medicine says no, no, no.
- 8:39Somebody that's going to have a genetic blood test to find out they have a clotting disorder.
- 8:43And if they had taken oral estrogen, it could have given me a stroke.
- 8:47Right.
- 8:47So people that have an honest investment in their future and they have good communication with their family, even if it's not so good, I am not a family counselor, but I usually can kind of slide in and say, hold on a minute.
- 9:04So that's what your services are.
- 9:06So someone that, like if I had both my parents back in New Jersey and I really didn't know what was going on, I would hire you to fill that gap and ask me all the right questions to find out how and get things set up in place.
- 9:21Yeah.
- 9:21Because the the I mean, we obviously know the reality of everyone's gonna die at some point.
- 9:28And our parents are typically supposed to die before us, and we need to figure out and have a plan in place before we are reactionary to something happening.
- 9:36Right.
- 9:37That's what you're doing.
- 9:38So proactive, we need to get on it.
- 9:41Proactive, preventative.
- 9:43Yeah.
- 9:43Because if you go into a home, I think it's like a cursive, it's like a double-edged sword.
- 9:48So I can walk into a house, any house, and look around, and I kind of have an idea of where we're at with pathology.
- 9:56Right.
- 9:57It's kind of a curse.
- 9:59We're not allowed to diagnose somebody, but you look at somebody and you see the characteristics of Parkinson's, but perhaps that's not diagnosed.
- 10:07So then I would go in and try to um preemptively um prevent anything from happening.
- 10:14Okay.
- 10:15But it's really um personally based.
- 10:17So if you're not gonna use your walker, tell me.
- 10:20And we'll put grab bars all around so you can hold on to the bars and go through your house.
- 10:24Right.
- 10:25I have a friend that I went to college with who um he's a he's a boomer, actually.
- 10:30Yeah.
- 10:31And uh he's out in New Mexico.
- 10:33And went before I moved out here in the 23 years ago, I went out to visit him and we were brand new therapists.
- 10:40And he actually modified a man's trailer with Parkinson's with rope that he could hold onto the rope and go all the way down.
- 10:48And I never forgot that.
- 10:50He MacGyvered that place so that man could die in his own, in his own home on his terms.
- 10:56Happy.
- 10:57That's it.
- 10:58That's what I want to do.
- 10:59That's who you are.
- 11:00Awesome.
- 11:00Well, thank you for coming on here.
- 11:02You're amazing.
- 11:02I know that was quick, but that's what get it out there.
- 11:05Okay.
- 11:05Shout out, who are you?
- 11:07Tell my audience how to contact you.
- 11:09Look at the camera.
- 11:10Do it.
- 11:10Heather Harvey, tell them how to contact you.
- 11:13You can contact me at 480-415-7777.
- 11:18Um, I also have a website, celebrations across the miles.
- 11:23And really, we're what we're celebrating is actually preserving the family autonomy and independence of the senior.
- 11:30I love it.
- 11:30Thank you.
- 11:31I love it.
- 11:31And I'll put that in the show notes so they could contact you.
- 11:34Awesome.
- 11:34Thank you.
- 11:34Thank you.
- 11:35And that's a wrap.
- 11:36Ah, take care.
