- 0:01Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald is our Broncos insider Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 0:05Speaker 1: two five Pro Football. The insider I've covered Jeff Legwald.
- 0:10Speaker 2: He's the balloon popper. He doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 1: IBDW Local sixty eight. Start with the jomp and with
- 0:19Speaker 1: a career. It's leggy on Altitude Sports Radio ninety five.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Let's dive into it with our buddy Jeff Legwald right
- 0:31Speaker 1: now here on a Friday afternoon, Broncos in Vegas to
- 0:34Speaker 1: take on the Raiders on Sunday. We got a good
- 0:37Speaker 1: start to week twelve last night with Brown's and Steelers.
- 0:41Speaker 1: So leggy. How much did Sean Payton use what happened
- 0:46Speaker 1: last night in Cleveland as a cautionary tale for his team?
- 0:52Speaker 1: Don't let up against a divisional opponent in November, no
- 0:56Speaker 1: matter how putrid their record is.
- 1:00Speaker 3: All right, I don't have to remind him too much, Nate.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I mean they they're over Vegas. Yeah, so, I mean
- 1:06Speaker 3: you start there. But he he certainly mentions and uses
- 1:12Speaker 3: and prods with with all you know and all statistics,
- 1:19Speaker 3: numbers and circumstances he believes will help him, and I
- 1:23Speaker 3: think certainly, uh, he has pointed that out to them
- 1:27Speaker 3: at some point today during their either before practice, they
- 1:30Speaker 3: were they huddled briefly on the field after the stretch today,
- 1:37Speaker 3: which they don't always do, so you can tell he's
- 1:41Speaker 3: he's in that mode of reminding them, Hey, we're They're
- 1:44Speaker 3: in a situation they haven't been in a while, you know,
- 1:48Speaker 3: in terms of pushing for things, and they need to
- 1:52Speaker 3: sort of pay attention Leggy.
- 1:54Speaker 1: The Raiders are without their top two backs going into
- 1:57Speaker 1: this game. Gardner Minshew has not been awesome this year.
- 2:02Speaker 1: They're basically outside of brock Bauers, don't really have any
- 2:05Speaker 1: weapons offensively. Defensively, Max Crosby is clearly playing through something.
- 2:10Speaker 1: They have no pass rush. All three of their starting
- 2:12Speaker 1: corners are injured going into this game. I can't find
- 2:17Speaker 1: a reason why the Broncos shouldn't win this game by
- 2:20Speaker 1: double digits, and yet I find this game sneaky interesting
- 2:26Speaker 1: because of the divisional implications at this time of year.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Am I am I giving random NFL stupidity too much
- 2:35Speaker 1: credit going into this thing?
- 2:37Speaker 3: Well, some would say I do that every week, so
- 2:41Speaker 3: welcome to the club. But you know, we seen you know,
- 2:45Speaker 3: a Melvin Gordon fumble that you know picked off on
- 2:48Speaker 3: the fly.
- 2:49Speaker 1: M hmmm.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Uh. You know that kind of stuff is what costs
- 2:53Speaker 3: you in in games like these. You know, last night,
- 2:56Speaker 3: the penalty you know, out of nowhere. Uh, you know,
- 3:00Speaker 3: put the Steelers in a bind. So I mean, it's
- 3:03Speaker 3: just it doesn't take much, but turnovers always and forever
- 3:09Speaker 3: will be the one thing that turns a game that
- 3:12Speaker 3: should be one way into another very quickly.
- 3:16Speaker 4: All right, Zach Allen popped up on the injury report today.
- 3:18Speaker 4: Now he's listed as questionable.
- 3:20Speaker 2: What do we make of that?
- 3:22Speaker 3: Well, you know, he's moving around okay when we were
- 3:25Speaker 3: out there, so Andy, that's what I have to go on.
- 3:28Speaker 3: And you know, in the locker room after practice, I
- 3:33Speaker 3: don't think anything was out of the ordinary. So I
- 3:35Speaker 3: think this will be a case of that he feels
- 3:38Speaker 3: like he did today. On Sunday, he will play. You know,
- 3:43Speaker 3: maybe he doesn't play his usual ninety percent of the snaps.
- 3:49Speaker 3: You know, I don't know that, but I think my
- 3:51Speaker 3: gut right now would be that he would play, and
- 3:54Speaker 3: it's just a matter of how good he feels working
- 3:58Speaker 3: through it.
- 4:00Speaker 4: If you warned us about this, so I'm not gonna
- 4:01Speaker 4: act like I'm shocked, but Drew Sanders, he's going into
- 4:04Speaker 4: his last week before they can activate him.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Is that correct?
- 4:07Speaker 4: After this, they got to make a decision soon and
- 4:10Speaker 4: Josh Renolds is in his second week.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Correct.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yes, last week was Josh Reynolds' first full week in
- 4:19Speaker 3: with the clock running and this week was his second.
- 4:22Speaker 3: But I believe Sanders. They have to make a decision
- 4:25Speaker 3: on by Wednesday next week. So, uh, you know, he
- 4:31Speaker 3: the way I look at him during practice, it appears
- 4:35Speaker 3: to me they are working him as if he will
- 4:39Speaker 3: he will return. He's been going through, you know, all
- 4:43Speaker 3: of the things the other outside linebackers do in practice.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So I think unless there's some unforeseen problem, they will
- 4:51Speaker 3: try very hard to make the roster move. They need
- 4:54Speaker 3: to to get him on the on the roster and
- 4:57Speaker 3: that would be a boost if he is is you
- 5:01Speaker 3: know how he looked in the offseason program before he
- 5:04Speaker 3: got injured.
- 5:05Speaker 1: We're talking to Jeff Legwald on a Friday, getting set
- 5:07Speaker 1: for Broncos Raiders. Jeff Legwald brought to you by the
- 5:09Speaker 1: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. Start
- 5:13Speaker 1: with a job and with a career, Jeff, A little
- 5:16Speaker 1: bit of history made today. We have never seen the
- 5:18Speaker 1: Thursday Night Flex Broncos Chargers, first game to have ever
- 5:23Speaker 1: done it. Obviously Denver would have had to have signed
- 5:25Speaker 1: off on this. What do you make of the decision
- 5:28Speaker 1: made by the Broncos to say, yeah, we'll play two
- 5:31Speaker 1: short week road games in one season. Is this a
- 5:35Speaker 1: wise choice based on data that the Broncos have poured
- 5:39Speaker 1: through or is this hubris on the part of Sean Payton.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Mat I think that's there were you know, and Sean
- 5:47Speaker 3: actually mentioned at least one of these after practice today.
- 5:51Speaker 3: I think the idea that it bumps the Bengals out
- 5:56Speaker 3: of a longer prep week rest week before they face
- 6:00Speaker 3: the Broncos the following weekend, I think that played into it.
- 6:05Speaker 3: I think it shows the Broncos believe nothing's official, but
- 6:10Speaker 3: I think it shows the Broncos believe that Bengal game
- 6:14Speaker 3: will be on a Saturday, so you know that it
- 6:18Speaker 3: even puts the clock a little differently on Cincinnati now
- 6:21Speaker 3: that they've been bumped out of the Thursday where they
- 6:24Speaker 3: would have had an extra couple days after that. And
- 6:28Speaker 3: I think he's got a young team and he is
- 6:31Speaker 3: trying to show them that, look, see you are in
- 6:36Speaker 3: important games. Now, you know you are you are that.
- 6:41Speaker 3: And you know he was very much in the yeah
- 6:45Speaker 3: you know, yeah, this is an important game, but they
- 6:47Speaker 3: want to play in more important ones mode after practice today.
- 6:51Speaker 3: But I think it does show that he believes it
- 6:55Speaker 3: serves a lot of purposes and that outweighs that it's
- 7:00Speaker 3: a short week, you know, to get ready for it.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I don't know that they would have been so quick
- 7:06Speaker 3: to do it if the Bengals had not been the
- 7:09Speaker 3: team getting bumped for one, and you know they have
- 7:13Speaker 3: a buy next week, so it's essentially, you know, a
- 7:17Speaker 3: short week on week two in some ways, you know,
- 7:20Speaker 3: if that makes sense. But I think it just shapes
- 7:24Speaker 3: up for a lot of reasons that they felt like
- 7:26Speaker 3: this was one they would go for.
- 7:29Speaker 4: All right, Well, before they get to that buy, they're
- 7:31Speaker 4: gonna have to face Cleveland on a Monday night. What
- 7:34Speaker 4: lessons should we learn from that game last night? Is
- 7:37Speaker 4: Cleveland maybe a little more formidable than the record suggests.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Well, defensively, Andy, you know, they've got one of the
- 7:44Speaker 3: best defensive players in football and Garrett and you know
- 7:48Speaker 3: Jim Schwartz is a coach. I've known since he was
- 7:51Speaker 3: a quality control guy in the nineties, and you know
- 7:57Speaker 3: he's either respected coordinator, former head coach. He will he
- 8:01Speaker 3: will throw a lot of things at bow Nicks that
- 8:06Speaker 3: Bo hasn't seen yet, even in week you know, fourteen
- 8:09Speaker 3: or fifteen of an NFL season. So I think that's
- 8:13Speaker 3: always something to look at with Cleveland, And you know,
- 8:18Speaker 3: it's easy to forget, but Schwartz was the guy who
- 8:22Speaker 3: really made Tebow Tebow's life miserable here and that's the
- 8:26Speaker 3: week the Broncos decided to switch to an option look
- 8:30Speaker 3: after what the Lions and Schwartz did to Tebow that week.
- 8:33Speaker 3: So he's tough on young quarterbacks. So you know, yeah,
- 8:37Speaker 3: that's that's something they will have to look at it.
- 8:39Speaker 3: You know, Nick Chubb is Nick Chubb. That always gives
- 8:42Speaker 3: you a puncher's chance on offense.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Along those lines, talking about bow Nicks yesterday, Joel Lombardi mentioned,
- 8:50Speaker 1: you know they're still seeing throws on film that bow
- 8:54Speaker 1: is missing, but you know, clearly framed it positively. We
- 8:59Speaker 1: love where he's out now, but there's still you know,
- 9:01Speaker 1: there's still throws out there. There's still some meat on
- 9:03Speaker 1: the bone that he is a rookie quarterback is leaving
- 9:07Speaker 1: right now. What did you interpret Lombardi to be talking
- 9:11Speaker 1: about when he mentioned that yesterday, Well, if they look at.
- 9:16Speaker 3: The same metrics we can look at, yeah, and if
- 9:19Speaker 3: you remove the blowout quotient. You know, I think we
- 9:22Speaker 3: talked a little bit about this Monday, But if you
- 9:26Speaker 3: remove the blowout quotient, and there are metrics that do that,
- 9:30Speaker 3: you know, when you're behind her ahead by fourteen, his
- 9:35Speaker 3: completion percentages is down in the bottom you know, quarter
- 9:40Speaker 3: of the league, and off target throws he's in the
- 9:44Speaker 3: bottom three or four. So that I think that's what
- 9:47Speaker 3: he's talking about, that they're trying to get the accuracy
- 9:50Speaker 3: up when things are tense and when the game is
- 9:54Speaker 3: in doubt. He's been very good when they have early
- 9:58Speaker 3: momentum and get it going and or when defenses are
- 10:04Speaker 3: giving him more of a backed off look and the
- 10:07Speaker 3: Broncos are trailing, and you know, that's that's not a
- 10:12Speaker 3: criticism of anything. It's just you know, you play what's
- 10:15Speaker 3: in front of you. But it's the way his season
- 10:18Speaker 3: has worked out, and they would like to see that
- 10:22Speaker 3: that that falcons premium accuracy. You know, in some fashion
- 10:28Speaker 3: in a tight game against a top defense. That that's
- 10:31Speaker 3: what they're going for in all of this, And yeah,
- 10:35Speaker 3: is that a big ask for a rookie. It's a
- 10:37Speaker 3: huge ask for a rookie, but it's what they want
- 10:41Speaker 3: and need as they go through his first year. But
- 10:44Speaker 3: they want some of those tighter window throws when the
- 10:49Speaker 3: game's on the line, and you know they're looking to
- 10:52Speaker 3: increase that that success rate.
- 10:55Speaker 1: But again, they haven't really played all that terribly many
- 10:58Speaker 1: close games, which is just wild.
- 11:00Speaker 3: But but it's it at either or games. Yeah, in
- 11:04Speaker 3: the losses, he's a very different player both numerically and
- 11:09Speaker 3: visually than he has been in the wins, and you
- 11:12Speaker 3: know to be expected.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Frankly, Yeah, sizable sample size on both of those Bose
- 11:17Speaker 1: home roads split so far this year, legi completion rate
- 11:21Speaker 1: is about seven percent higher at home than it is
- 11:24Speaker 1: on the road. Eleven touchdowns a mile high three on
- 11:27Speaker 1: the road in six games. Yardage passer I mean passerating everything.
- 11:32Speaker 1: He is a much better quarterback at home than he
- 11:35Speaker 1: is on the road. Does all of that apply when
- 11:38Speaker 1: you start talking about a Legion stadium in a in
- 11:42Speaker 1: a building where there's gonna be like twelve Raiders fans total.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Does does that stuff still matter in such a unique venue?
- 11:51Speaker 3: Yeah, only only you know sort of the noise quote, shit,
- 11:54Speaker 3: how much pre snap can you get done? But that
- 11:58Speaker 3: I would it will stun me if that's not sixty
- 12:01Speaker 3: forty Bronco fans Sunday, Especially the way the Raiders season's going.
- 12:07Speaker 3: I mean, that's that's fast becoming with SOFI a very
- 12:11Speaker 3: big Bronco road trip, you know, which is which down
- 12:16Speaker 3: the road and should be a good thing for the
- 12:19Speaker 3: Broncos if they can take two road venues and dial
- 12:23Speaker 3: them back a little bit, that's always helpful. But I
- 12:26Speaker 3: wouldn't you know, that's not going to be like you know,
- 12:29Speaker 3: arrowhead or something. Right. For sure, he'll be able to
- 12:33Speaker 3: do more before the snap, and he'll be able to
- 12:35Speaker 3: hear Peyton in the headset more often, more clearly, you know,
- 12:40Speaker 3: without the you know, say it over again, twirl of
- 12:44Speaker 3: the fingers that you see so often on the road.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Where do you fall on the word thrice, Jeff?
- 12:50Speaker 4: Because surprisingly on a sky Friday, Dan Hye comes in
- 12:53Speaker 4: always drops some stat knowledge on us, but today he
- 12:56Speaker 4: tried to resurrect the word thrice. Upset with Ryan or
- 12:59Speaker 4: Ritchie for going once twice, three times a lady, not
- 13:01Speaker 4: thrice times a lady. Are you glad the word thrice
- 13:05Speaker 4: doesn't exist?
- 13:06Speaker 1: Let me put it this way down. Would look weird
- 13:08Speaker 1: if you put thrice in one of your stories? Would
- 13:12Speaker 1: your editor leave it in there?
- 13:15Speaker 3: Uh? They would give me a thristy day notice.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Probably thristy. See that word sucks, I'd say it sucks.
- 13:26Speaker 3: It's not useful. I'm just gonna say it's not useful.
- 13:28Speaker 1: No, not terribly.
- 13:30Speaker 3: No, it's it's you know, maybe you can have the
- 13:32Speaker 3: club in the bag, but you're not gonna swing it
- 13:34Speaker 3: very often.
- 13:37Speaker 4: That that weird sand wedge you bought somewhere that never
- 13:41Speaker 4: comes out, but you just like the look of the grip.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I gonna I'm gonna dig through all of Leggy's most
- 13:46Speaker 1: recent stuff and I'm just gonna search for the word three,
- 13:49Speaker 1: and I'm gonna replace it with thrice every time.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Like if you went back.
- 13:52Speaker 4: To all your true neighborhood of Chicago and dropped a
- 13:55Speaker 4: couple thrices.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Are you making it out alive without a black.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Ass getting punched in the face.
- 14:00Speaker 3: I'm certain somebody would punch me because they would just
- 14:03Speaker 3: say that's an insult whatever it is, giving.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Him the hairy eyeball.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Yeah, guys I grew up with would say, hey, that's
- 14:12Speaker 3: uh what are you talking about? And I don't get it,
- 14:15Speaker 3: so I'm gonna punch you in the faith use.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Guys in there thinks you're smarter than me. Huh ah,
- 14:23Speaker 2: you're smarter than me?
- 14:24Speaker 3: I yeah, smooth up, college boy, I'm making a head.
- 14:30Speaker 3: That's what That's what I would get if I if
- 14:32Speaker 3: I drop the thrice?
- 14:34Speaker 1: All right, Leggy, think that.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Why don't you guys try to, you know, bring ye
- 14:38Speaker 3: old back or something whatever.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Old with an E at the end, the old.
- 14:43Speaker 2: The hell is ye old? Anyway?
- 14:45Speaker 1: I think about that every time I drive through our
- 14:48Speaker 1: vata and I see old Wadsworth and it's old with
- 14:51Speaker 1: the E on there.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Old news for you. You can drop the E on
- 14:56Speaker 2: that crap.
- 14:58Speaker 1: By the way, I I can't. I can't tell you
- 15:01Speaker 1: that this season, Daniel Jones has won thrice of his
- 15:05Speaker 1: last sixteen starts.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Where's that guy end up? Leggy?
- 15:09Speaker 3: Wow, that's a great question. And the fact I talked
- 15:12Speaker 3: two things about it, it just tells you the state
- 15:15Speaker 3: of the quarterback universe right now in the NFL. I've
- 15:19Speaker 3: never seen it so tumultuous in terms of signing players
- 15:24Speaker 3: to enormous deals and then ditching I mean the Russell
- 15:27Speaker 3: Wilson Daniels and it's just we're talking nine digit contracts
- 15:31Speaker 3: that are just discarded. Uh, you know, when things don't
- 15:37Speaker 3: go the way everybody wants them to and all of that.
- 15:39Speaker 3: But uh, you know, that's a tough one. I think
- 15:43Speaker 3: he you know, he certainly will think he can play
- 15:46Speaker 3: and start somewhere and be hoping for the resurrection he's
- 15:50Speaker 3: seen from you know a lot of other guys. I mean, uh,
- 15:54Speaker 3: you know, the proof is out there. If you find
- 15:55Speaker 3: the right spot, maybe you get a little bit of
- 15:59Speaker 3: a restid direction, you know. And you know, Baker Mayfield
- 16:03Speaker 3: probably a great example in a similar career path in
- 16:07Speaker 3: a lot of ways. So uh, I don't know that
- 16:12Speaker 3: you know, you go somewhere this season if you're him,
- 16:15Speaker 3: unless a starter just gets hurt and you're gonna have
- 16:19Speaker 3: the ability to play for somebody who can protect you
- 16:21Speaker 3: at least a little bit.
- 16:22Speaker 2: But like a rock, I'm just saying.
- 16:30Speaker 3: That would be you know, depending that that was a
- 16:34Speaker 3: pretty nutty week out there the way he it's it's
- 16:37Speaker 3: it's okay. The shoulders okay, Okay, he didn't practice, but
- 16:40Speaker 3: it's still okay. Okay, he's not gonna play. Yeah, yeah,
- 16:45Speaker 3: it's not okay, Leggy.
- 16:48Speaker 1: The NFL being the ultimate copycat league, though, is there
- 16:51Speaker 1: any chance that the Giants looked at it and we're
- 16:53Speaker 1: just like, look at Denver's dead cat number. They look
- 16:57Speaker 1: great right now. We can we can swallow it, we
- 16:59Speaker 1: can with it. We don't need to hang on to
- 17:01Speaker 1: this correct player that we don't want anymore. It's in
- 17:04Speaker 1: all seriousness, like how much do they look at a
- 17:06Speaker 1: Denver situation and just saying that it's not going to
- 17:09Speaker 1: kill you.
- 17:10Speaker 3: Well, I'll tell you what happened here that stuns. That
- 17:14Speaker 3: stuns people around the league is Sean Payton whatever you know?
- 17:20Speaker 3: And we we think and we know he has a
- 17:22Speaker 3: voice in personnel here. Does he technically have final say
- 17:27Speaker 3: you know, we don't. We haven't seen the clause of
- 17:29Speaker 3: the contracts or anything, but we know he has a
- 17:32Speaker 3: significant voice here in personnel. And he went younger here
- 17:38Speaker 3: with the cap troubles than he ever did in New Orleans.
- 17:41Speaker 3: That was the one difference here. He bought into young
- 17:45Speaker 3: players and you look at the impact that may have
- 17:48Speaker 3: for the Broncos next year and the year after that.
- 17:53Speaker 3: I think they may see the benefits and other teams
- 17:56Speaker 3: I think believe if you're gonna take on that a
- 18:00Speaker 3: historical anchor, you better be willing to keep drafting guys
- 18:06Speaker 3: and keep playing them right away. And you know, some
- 18:10Speaker 3: of the Broncos young players have forced the issue. And
- 18:13Speaker 3: he may not have thought this way in May, but
- 18:17Speaker 3: he certainly does now. Because all you gotta do is,
- 18:19Speaker 3: we'll look at who's getting the premium snatch now. Who
- 18:23Speaker 3: wasn't you know in September or even August.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a young core with this team, and the
- 18:28Speaker 1: Sean Peyton of today zigg to where the Sean Payton
- 18:32Speaker 1: of old with and he would have zagged, I suppose.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald, everybody ESPN. Good stuff, man, We appreciate it.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Thanks Moll. Let's take care, all.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Right, Jeff Lagwald.
- 18:43Speaker 3: Maybe we'll go thrice times next week.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll see aty Old Stadium Sunday.
- 18:47Speaker 1: We'll do it on Monday. Jeff Legwald. Brought to you
- 18:50Speaker 1: by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Start with a job and with a career
