Summer’s here, and so are the lakes — but beware: that cool water might be hiding a deadly microscopic menace. Naegleria fowleri, the “brain-eating amoeba,” thrives in warm freshwater and even tap water, and climate change is making it more common. Though rare — fewer than ten U.S. cases yearly — it’s almost always fatal, with only four survivors in 167 documented cases since 1962.
