Latest / Ghost Cult Magazine Podcast / PODCAST: Episode 978 - Gozu's Marc Gaffney on Six Albums of Stoner Fuzz and the Story Behind "Gozu VI"
Transcript
- 0:00I literally had 50 sheets back and forth of lyrics and when the
- 0:04music was finally done I could go through and literally be
- 0:07like, oh I like this for a chorus.
- 0:09I'm going to use this for a bridge.
- 0:11I like this, this and this. I was able to put it all
- 0:14together. It was really nice to be able to
- 0:15kind of trace back where I, you know, and I knew where I was
- 0:18when I wrote, you know, certain things.
- 0:20I knew what I was feeling. Did I want to smash a wall?
- 0:23You know, I mean, was I pretty angry?
- 0:25And being able to do that and then put it, you know, to say it
- 0:29is probably some of the best therapy I've ever had.
- 0:38What's up everybody? Once again it's TV at
- 0:41ghostcultman.com and I am super stoked to be joined by Mark of
- 0:46Gozu today. One of my favorite bands.
- 0:48I'm not supposed to have favorites, but honestly, I can't
- 0:51hide it. One of my favorite bands.
- 0:52Mark How the hell? Are you good?
- 0:53How you doing brother? Thanks for having me.
- 0:55Yeah, man, I'm here. We're going to talk about Gozu 6
- 0:58very feels of volume 4 Black Sabbath with the the Roman
- 1:03numeral. You know, it's always
- 1:06interesting to me how album, how albums get their names is
- 1:09usually like the most outstanding track or something
- 1:12that ties it all together becomes the title track.
- 1:14But keep it simple. I like the, you know, the
- 1:17studiousness of of Roman numerals.
- 1:19So 66 records in like, you know, 15 something years ago.
- 1:24When he. Used the most that you've been
- 1:25making music like long run, long running Boston institution from
- 1:30my yeah, definitely. But a long time.
- 1:34I forget sometimes how fucking long Doug and I have played
- 1:36together. Yeah, Sherm is my dude.
- 1:39Like Doug Sherman is my absolute.
- 1:42I'm so proud of him. And he is just my, you know,
- 1:44like he you can't not love that guy.
- 1:47I don't know anyone who hates him, right?
- 1:49You might have hot takes and he's got got spicy takes on the
- 1:53Internet, but like, no one actually hates that guy, I
- 1:55think. Right.
- 1:56I think everybody loves that guy.
- 1:57So yeah, man, those are 6 killer record.
- 2:00Some of the best music you guys have ever made.
- 2:02And I really say that sincerely. My favorite vocal performance
- 2:06from you out by far. Like this.
- 2:09I was saying on the last record that I felt like you were
- 2:12leveling up your game. And I'm sure it's in the old
- 2:14interview we did with with Doug on the call.
- 2:16And in this one, I felt like you really stretched out, tried
- 2:20different things, like I think you were experimenting but also
- 2:23like pulled it all off. So I don't know if that was on
- 2:25purpose or it just happened, but like.
- 2:28It was 100% on purpose. There's a lot of stuff I wanted
- 2:32to do that I actually, you know, finally felt comfortable to do.
- 2:36And you have to feel comfortable without, you know, if, if
- 2:39there's like an inkling of ah, maybe I shouldn't do it, then
- 2:42you know, that's not good. It'll come across obviously in
- 2:45the performance. Yeah.
- 2:46I this album, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.
- 2:49I was able to chart everything out.
- 2:51And on top of that, I tried a ton of shit that I literally
- 2:54just, you know, if if I felt that I tried it.
- 2:56And luckily it worked. So, you know, and Doug was in
- 3:00there every day with me and a lot of too.
- 3:02Benny Grotto, who, you know, he also did Locust Season.
- 3:06So he, you know, he and I had chatted before what I wanted to
- 3:10do, you know, certain sounds even like, you know, for
- 3:13Harmony's doubling call response, things like that.
- 3:17So he was great at really kind of pushing me, you know, to
- 3:20really to try stuff that was a little bit out of my wheelhouse.
- 3:24And I think, you know, I was quite happy with, you know, that
- 3:27he did that. And obviously Doug, you know,
- 3:28would stick his head and be like, hey, man, you know, try
- 3:30this. So yeah, it's by far, you know,
- 3:34my favorite stuff to listen to. I mean, I don't, unfortunately,
- 3:38I don't go back and listen to like many of the all the albums
- 3:40and stuff. I'm a bit of a prick when it
- 3:43comes to critiquing, but I actually really like the sound
- 3:45of this album, of the whole album.
- 3:47Mark Gaffney, future reviewer for Ghost Cult.
- 3:49Maybe, you know, I think just an artist journey type of sense.
- 3:55It is hard to go back and listen to your earlier stuff.
- 3:57Maybe it like, oh, we could have did that better.
- 4:00It's really hard to not hyper focus on old things.
- 4:03I'm the same way with writing. I was the same way as a
- 4:05photographer. I was the same way in a band.
- 4:07I can't, you know, how many riffs did I throw away because
- 4:09they sounded like something like Megadeth or something or Slayer?
- 4:13How many riffs did I get rid of that could have just been good
- 4:15songs that I didn't have to be so precious about?
- 4:18So I think there's a thing about the bands that succeed and get
- 4:21forward, whatever that means. The bands that succeed in in the
- 4:25business of the music industry that sucks is the ones that are
- 4:28dispassionate and not like, OK, the album is done and I can
- 4:32leave it here comfortable. And I think that's an underrated
- 4:35skill because bands don't have it.
- 4:37They like they navel gaze and they're too analytical and
- 4:40they're like, you know, like it doesn't matter what genre, what
- 4:43sub genre. Sure, sure, sure.
- 4:44Yeah. So like, I think there's
- 4:45something to be said for that to be able to self edit, but also
- 4:48to let go. And I think that's something we
- 4:50never talk about here. And I'm I love that you, you
- 4:53know, that's, you know, it's good that you're critical and
- 4:56it's, it's OK that you don't want to go back and re listen to
- 4:58older stuff. Maybe it'll seep into whatever
- 5:00you're trying to do next, you know, in a number.
- 5:03Yeah, You know, I'm always wanting to to really to kind of
- 5:06push farther and to push harder. So, you know, just, I don't ever
- 5:11want to be like, ah, fuck, you know, that guy's doing the same
- 5:14shit, you know, he's always done.
- 5:15You know that if I hear that, I must have just fucking become a
- 5:19dance instructor, you know what I mean?
- 5:20Because it's not going to it's, you know, so part of it is just
- 5:25saying fuck it and really just going for it.
- 5:28The easiest way to do that is when you have a nice support
- 5:30system around. So, you know, all the guys in
- 5:32the banners like do it like fucking let's go.
- 5:35And, you know, some bands aren't fortunate enough to have that
- 5:37actually. So, you know, I'm very, very
- 5:40lucky in that. And, you know, I I wanted to
- 5:43really kind of to kind of emotionally get to where I
- 5:46needed to be lyrically. I want, if I, you know, I'm
- 5:50writing this shit. So if I'm going to sing it, I'm
- 5:52going to actually, you know, go complete balls out.
- 5:54So yeah, I, I felt, I felt this was probably, you know, the, the
- 5:59easiest and swiftest I've ever recorded vocals.
- 6:03And I feel, you know, really, really comfortable with them,
- 6:06which is not always the case, you know.
- 6:08So I'm, I'm really, you know, I'm, I'm usually happy with what
- 6:11I do, but this album, I don't it, it just, it hit a different
- 6:15nerve, you know, when I was recording.
- 6:17Right on if I can make a comparison, which I don't do
- 6:19much of in my work, but what I feel like it's like how Mastodon
- 6:23started out where it was just chaos, right?
- 6:26Like they didn't really have like I couldn't tell for I saw
- 6:29nested on like before they were. Right, right.
- 6:31Before remission, I saw them on tour.
- 6:33Yeah. And like, it was chaos watching
- 6:35them. They were making chaos.
- 6:36But like, to them, it made sense.
- 6:38And then over time, they kind of figured out their direction and
- 6:41each guy found their lane. Vocally.
- 6:43The three guys rest in peace to Brent.
- 6:46But like, I see the same thing with Gozu.
- 6:49It's like you had to fall into your place and find your correct
- 6:51comfortable lane vocally and not, again, no knock on any of
- 6:56the older work that I do love, but I think like on this record,
- 6:59when you want to be heavy, you're heavy.
- 7:01When you want to be grindy, you're grindy.
- 7:02I think there's some stirring and singing on here that is
- 7:05beautiful. Like I don't think I didn't
- 7:08expect it in a good way. And, you know, I think there
- 7:12are, you know, there's a lot of beautiful little nuances and
- 7:15stuff in the vocals here that I don't think you've got to before
- 7:18now that I really dig. Yeah, thank you.
- 7:20Yeah, and that's basically what I was going for.
- 7:24You know, I wanted something that kind of showed the whole
- 7:27well, you know, really what goes who could do it?
- 7:30It really kind of grab into our bag of influences.
- 7:34It just fucking throw them out there.
- 7:36And if they stuck, spectacular. If not, then, you know, let's
- 7:40move on. But yeah, something, you know,
- 7:44just really, really clicked. It wasn't, you know, sometimes
- 7:47you go in and you kind of suck yourself out.
- 7:48This time I went in and I think because I was very, very
- 7:52prepared, you know, you can do shit that usually you don't want
- 7:57to take a chance. And but when I kind of was
- 8:00thinking about, you know, one of the albums I love to listen to,
- 8:03right, who are the singers I really, really love?
- 8:06And, you know, I got more into breathing, you know, when to,
- 8:10you know, in a song structure, you don't always have to come in
- 8:13at a certain time. You know, it can be a little bit
- 8:15off. And you know, there's people
- 8:18like D Angelo would do that, you know, I mean, Neil Young fuck.
- 8:21So, you know, people like that. So I wanted to see, you know, if
- 8:25I could do something like that. And again, just to push myself.
- 8:29And once you know, it started going, you know, your confidence
- 8:32starts building a building a building.
- 8:35So it was fun, like I, I didn't leave being like the fuck, I
- 8:40gotta do this again, you know. So once, you know, I, I really
- 8:44think once I after, you know, I got the first one done, I was
- 8:48like, oh, here we go. Because I, you know, I think I'm
- 8:50saying the whole thing in like 2 1/2 days, I believe, you know,
- 8:54all, you know, all the lead and all the background stuff.
- 8:57Yeah, it was. Once it got going, I got going.
- 8:59I feel like you guys always work pretty fast and I, I don't know
- 9:02if I've asked Doug this offline, but or you have you guys do a
- 9:06lot of pre pro like the songs are written, jammed out,
- 9:10finished in your mind or mostly finished in your mind and then
- 9:12you just go put them. Usually lyrics.
- 9:15Lyrics, no, Musically, yeah. I mean, you know, we, we shape
- 9:19them in into what we want them to be.
- 9:22But having said that, though, there's still times in the
- 9:23studio where you're like, oh fuck, do that again, you know,
- 9:28which comes with having stuff solid again.
- 9:30You can, you know, maybe you could swim in that water a
- 9:33little bit deeper and not worry about sinking.
- 9:35So this was the first time I didn't sing one of these fucking
- 9:40songs until we actually got the studio.
- 9:42So none of these tunes had ever, ever, just because we wanted to
- 9:46make sure musically we were where we, you know, where we
- 9:50wanted to be. And then I had written, you
- 9:52know, all the lyrics way, way, way before not knowing that I
- 9:55was going to use any of this stuff, you know, on this album.
- 9:59It's just, I would keep, you know, literally, I had a pad by
- 10:02my bed or I'd have my phone and I would just write and write and
- 10:05write. So I was just, you know, telling
- 10:07someone. I literally had 50 sheets back
- 10:09and forth of lyrics. And when the music was finally
- 10:12done, I could go through and literally be like, oh, I like
- 10:16this for a chorus. I'm going to use this for a
- 10:18bridge. I like this, this and this.
- 10:20I was able to put it all together.
- 10:22It was really nice to be able to kind of trace back where I, you
- 10:25know, and I knew where I was when I wrote, you know, certain
- 10:27things. I know what the fuck I was
- 10:30feeling. I knew, you know, did I want to
- 10:33smash a wall? You know, I mean, was I pretty
- 10:35angry? And by ever, you know, being
- 10:38able to do that and then put it, you know, to say it is probably
- 10:41some of the best therapy I've ever had.
- 10:43Amazing. I love hearing it.
- 10:44This is such a rough time for people, which is why I love that
- 10:48Gozu always comes with the humor and the jokes and the laughter,
- 10:51but can be serious when you need to be.
- 10:52This is such a crazy time in the world, and I'm so glad you have
- 10:56that outlet. We're losing so many people.
- 10:57Nice D'Angelo shout out what a tragedy that is.
- 11:00Yeah. What?
- 11:01Oh. Yeah, that's.
- 11:02Not D'Angelo and Angie Stone both.
- 11:04Pass. I know, right?
- 11:04Within like months of each other they're.
- 11:06Poor crazy, right? It's crazy.
- 11:08They're poor families. Umm, just my yeah.
- 11:10But great singer. Like, unbelievable talent, you
- 11:13know, so many directions. I always talk about the Go Zoo
- 11:16song titles and songs, but like I often I, you know, like I
- 11:19they're not done just for tongue in cheek giggles for the shit of
- 11:23it. Corinthian Leatherface, Midnight
- 11:25Express Killer con, which I hope is a Star Trek reference.
- 11:29Banachek, which I mentioned to Doug and how much I love that
- 11:31video and that. Song, thank you.
- 11:33They did know karate, even with no punctuation.
- 11:36I think that's the right way. Give me the give me the loot,
- 11:38which is a nice biggie reference, but also.
- 11:40Yeah, there you go. Thank you.
- 11:42Yep, Yep. You got it.
- 11:43And then Corvette Summer, which is hilarious and such a good
- 11:46record top to bottom. You know, some of the songs are
- 11:49longer, but they don't feel long.
- 11:51And that's always my barometer for everything.
- 11:53I always think about you guys have played a bunch of stone or
- 11:56rock festivals with the band Steak, my dude, who puts on
- 12:00Desert Fest and helps you put that on.
- 12:02And I always think about that band because they do very tight,
- 12:04short songs. Or Zed.
- 12:06Like nothing's too extravagant. It's trim.
- 12:09But like you guys, when you write a song, the parts all
- 12:11matter. Nothing I would cut out or throw
- 12:13away. Like I don't ever like, Oh, if I
- 12:15was writing the Seven and 23 song, I like cut out some of it.
- 12:18But like, you know, ACDC can make their best songs or 330 or
- 12:214 minutes, but I feel like 5 minutes and up is kind of where
- 12:25you guys live and it's it feels good.
- 12:27Totally, Yeah. I mean, you know, like my
- 12:30favorite band is The Allman Brothers, you know what I mean?
- 12:32Of the Grateful Dead. I mean, you know, for for me, a
- 12:3620 minute song is, you know, I mean, you know, when I first got
- 12:40into YAB, that was one big reason.
- 12:42You know, they have 17 minute tunes or you know, I, I think
- 12:45dope smoker is one of the best. And it doesn't matter what what
- 12:49genre, like 63 minutes of, you know, just pure drawing, you
- 12:52win, you know, feeling the guitar tunes, right, feeling the
- 12:56drums, feeling the bass. So, you know, for us, yeah, you
- 13:00know, we don't do anything just to do it and we don't put it
- 13:02parts and just, you know, they, they have to to make a
- 13:06difference and they have to matter in the song.
- 13:08So yeah, you know, we tend to have longer songs, but when
- 13:11you're playing them, it doesn't feel, you know, I mean it, it
- 13:14feels to me like it's a regular 3 1/2, four minute tune.
- 13:17Absolutely, and you know, live obviously also is the band.
- 13:20The songs continue to live and breathe in it.
- 13:22You can only do that when you have a killer rhythm section.
- 13:25These guys bring so much to the band and so much to this record
- 13:29And you know, I I just like these songs.
- 13:32Absolutely cook. They sound like a band should
- 13:34sound to me like a there's but like also like yeah, there's a
- 13:39lot of stone and rock and and light hearted stuff, but there's
- 13:42some very doomy stuff. So I'm you know, I know you love
- 13:44it job. You mentioned them.
- 13:45I'm a huge fan. I love Mike and like there's
- 13:48some of that on here that I think you guys have explored in
- 13:52the past and could explore more and in the future if that album
- 13:55kind of came to you, you could do a record like that.
- 13:57But like, you know, some of these, some of these songs are
- 13:59just crushing, man. Like guitar nerds are gonna love
- 14:02this shit. They always do.
- 14:03Yeah, it's, it's, it's the best he's played.
- 14:06And I've told him that, you know, umpteen times.
- 14:08You know what? He, you know, he's incredibly
- 14:11hard on himself. Usually the first fucking thing
- 14:14he does is the best, you know what I mean?
- 14:17So he was better at kind of just letting himself go, not
- 14:20overthinking it and just letting, you know, it really
- 14:23kind of his fingers doing the talking.
- 14:25So I was really, really happy, you know, with what he did.
- 14:30And I know he is. So, yeah, you know, it's nice to
- 14:34have a player like that where you can showcase, you know,
- 14:37tone, you know, intricacy going, you know, from from, you know,
- 14:43this fret to this fret. You know, that's one of the
- 14:45reasons I love playing live, right?
- 14:47I get to see that Ding Dong, you know, doing his thing.
- 14:50And it's why I love playing with Joe.
- 14:52You know, there's definitely, you have to be cohesive in
- 14:55order, you know, to have stuff come across.
- 14:58Like I've watched tons of bands. You could tell those guys
- 15:00fucking hate each other, you know, I hate, or, you know, or
- 15:04you could tell like there's maybe two guys that want nothing
- 15:07to do with each other And, and you know, that that's tough.
- 15:09You know, God bless if you could do that.
- 15:11I'm not someone that would be able to do that at all.
- 15:13So yeah, guitar players I think are going to, you know, love
- 15:17this. You know, tonality wise, it's a,
- 15:19it's the best tone. We've it's the best tone I've
- 15:21ever had. 5 fucking fire man. Totally killer.
- 15:24Yeah. Shout out to all of y'all and
- 15:26and again, Benny Grotto and all his records I'm a huge fan of.
- 15:29But you know, definitely Seth and Joe killed it.
- 15:31And I don't know, man, I've been in bands where I was the hated
- 15:34guy, the disliked guy, and I hated my bandmates.
- 15:37And if you ever saw like Soundgarden after Super Unknown
- 15:40when they were. Like, Oh yeah.
- 15:41Hate fucking each other with the set every night.
- 15:44Like, I watched them like, like Ben Shepherd just smash his
- 15:47guitar into his stack and run off stage.
- 15:50And it was like, you know, like, I'll never forget that night at
- 15:55Roseland. And then they broke up like
- 15:56right after it. So like or you know, or fake no
- 15:59more when you sadly find out they were not, you know, like
- 16:01their three guys are friends and the other guy doesn't like those
- 16:04three guys so. Like.
- 16:05What a shame, what a shame. It can be like a loveless
- 16:08marriage to be in a band 100. Percent.
- 16:10Yeah, it, it is very much. I mean, yeah.
- 16:12You know, you're not married to one person.
- 16:13You're married to, you know, there's three other people that,
- 16:15you know, you're sharing a fucking hotel room with, right?
- 16:18A lot of times you sleep in the same goddamn bed.
- 16:20You're in a van with them for 11 hours, you know, obviously.
- 16:23And we can speak pretty freely, which is which is good.
- 16:26But I mean, we all get along really well, which makes
- 16:29everything a lot fucking easier because, you know, there are
- 16:32times where you're just like, fuck, you know?
- 16:34And I played in other bands where, you know, I've wanted to
- 16:37punch. She was in the fucking face and
- 16:39that sucks. Throat punched the singer every
- 16:41time someone wants to. I promise.
- 16:44It's been me. I'm sure it's been you.
- 16:45Let's talk. I love the Banachek video.
- 16:47So first of all, Banachek, I commented like on your Facebook
- 16:51like, dude, no one knows that show.
- 16:53You have to be like old and a die hard George Peppard fan to
- 16:57know that show. And he was like a Polish Private
- 17:01Eye in Boston. They terribly didn't like Boston
- 17:04dirty. He lived in Beacon Hill, but
- 17:06also he was like a never do well kind of guy and a great show.
- 17:11Brilliant. You know, I think between
- 17:13Dannachek and Kolchek, the Night Stalker that was in the
- 17:16operation for X-Files, who's Yeah.
- 17:20And so I love the the song kills and the video is fucking killer.
- 17:24It's so funny. I kind of feel bad for the
- 17:26chicken at the end. I don't want to spoil, we'll
- 17:29link it in the description. But like, the video is great,
- 17:32man. You guys killed it.
- 17:33Yeah, we shot that in like 5 hours and, and and Jim Forster
- 17:36fucking killed it again. A really, really easy shoot.
- 17:39Like there was nothing rough about it.
- 17:41Just like, OK, let's get this done.
- 17:43We did all right, let's get this part done.
- 17:44We did like everything, just it was so fucking smooth and we had
- 17:49fun. And obviously you could tell
- 17:50that in the video, you know what I mean?
- 17:52It was really, it was rather enjoyable.
- 17:55Is that Duds bar? Is that Duds bar?
- 17:56Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's his new bar
- 17:58restaurant. Yeah, yeah.
- 17:59It's the Somerville, The Hollows.
- 18:00I'll link that too. Yeah, I'm looking to get back to
- 18:03Boston, hopefully this year or next year and come visit and
- 18:07click in on him and go see all my and a bunch of those cold
- 18:10people. But yeah, man, what a fun video.
- 18:12I don't know if you guys will have another single between now
- 18:15and the release, but like absolutely fun.
- 18:17So we have so we have a single dropping tomorrow.
- 18:19Oh, all right. Corinthian Leatherface haha.
- 18:22So good. Good opener, killer opening
- 18:25tracks, does what it needs to do.
- 18:27Great name fun. I think people will dig it.
- 18:30And yeah, man, just a couple more questions for you.
- 18:32You're always so good to talk to you, man.
- 18:35Blacklight Media, you know, so this is under Metal Blade.
- 18:38It's you have been like the most successful band on the label in
- 18:42terms of consistency. You know, nothing against the
- 18:45label because like, we love Metal Blade and we love.
- 18:47I was at the Blacklight Showcase in Gramercy Theatre before
- 18:50playing, before I moved out of Brooklyn to California.
- 18:53So like you guys have actually been, I think the most
- 18:56consistent band for them. So that's it's great that it
- 18:59works. You have metal blades like might
- 19:01behind you, which is amazing. You know, what is there like in
- 19:05terms of like involvement? Are they very hands off?
- 19:07Are you still in touch with, you know, Chris, like, what is that?
- 19:11So yeah, I mean, I actually just talked to Chris the other day in
- 19:15terms of he's really, really hands off.
- 19:18I mean, he's just like, I trust you guys.
- 19:19Go do a fucking good album. And then the people on Metal
- 19:22Blade, yeah, I mean, they're, you know, they're like, hey,
- 19:26this is what we need, you know, because again, it is a business,
- 19:29you know? So but in terms of writing and
- 19:32things like that, they're all, they're very, very hands off.
- 19:34You know, they're not like, you got to do this or make it sound
- 19:37like this, not at all. You know, we record, give them
- 19:39the stuff. They just, you know, they're
- 19:41digging or not. And luckily, you know, they like
- 19:43the album a lot. So yeah, there's never been
- 19:46like, like someone like calling me yelling, you know, or
- 19:49anything fucking stuff like that.
- 19:52You know, if anything, you know, they're just like we we, you
- 19:56know, we enjoy this album. Let's go.
- 19:58So yeah, it's, it's been again, a very easy relationship.
- 20:02You know, it, it's, it's not something where, you know, I'm,
- 20:06I'm getting like some fucking something in the mail where it's
- 20:08like you kind of just, you know, we record, we tell them what we
- 20:11want to do. And it's kind of, you know, it's
- 20:14again, it's that easy. Well, we love hearing that and
- 20:17I'm glad that's still working out.
- 20:20Couple more, obviously, we just found out that Iron Maiden got
- 20:23in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and maybe halls of fame are
- 20:26incongruous, you know, incongruous with like rock and
- 20:29metal. But like, it's great that they
- 20:31got in. You can.
- 20:31See, I think it's great they got in.
- 20:32Yeah. I mean, I listened when I was a
- 20:34kid, so you know, You know, And fucking I mean, that gallop is,
- 20:39I've always thought, you know, they're the metal humming
- 20:41brothers, you know what I mean? Nicely done.
- 20:43That's interesting. Yeah.
- 20:44Who would you put in that's not in?
- 20:46That is like criminally not in. Could be any genre, I don't
- 20:49care. Christ, I think The Doobie
- 20:51Brothers should be in. I thought they might have been,
- 20:54but maybe they're not. I didn't think they were.
- 20:56I'll double check. I'll double check that.
- 20:58But yeah, maybe he should be in. I feel like they're in because I
- 21:02think McDonald is in twice, once by himself.
- 21:05Oh, is he really? I didn't know that.
- 21:06I think he's in or he should be in as a solo.
- 21:09Artist. Yeah, no shit, right?
- 21:11Yeah. Is there?
- 21:16I believe they are in. Yeah, they were in in 2020.
- 21:18That's easily why we didn't we were in because like the whole
- 21:21world mine white. Yeah, no shit.
- 21:26Who do I should be in? That is not I always.
- 21:29Say Thin Lizzy. Me personally.
- 21:31Yeah, I mean, that's, yeah. You know what?
- 21:33I always think they are, you know, because they're so fucking
- 21:36good. Yeah, that's a travesty.
- 21:38Christ almighty. I think I mean the cult.
- 21:41I mean, for some of my age, you know, Duffy's playing was so
- 21:45instrumental, you know, like na, na, na.
- 21:48Because, you know, very, you know, his rhythm playing is so
- 21:52fucking good, you know, and the guy had such a great swagger and
- 21:57the great singer. I mean, you know, I'm always in
- 22:00awe that they're not. And then some of the other
- 22:02bands, you know, that get on. I'm kind of like, what in the
- 22:04fuck? But yeah, you know, I you know,
- 22:07I was happy to see Maiden get in just because I like everyone of
- 22:12the fucking elves. Like not to be, but.
- 22:14And Blaze is getting in with them.
- 22:16So I think that's that's really beautiful that they decided to
- 22:18put Blaze in with them. I don't know if you know who
- 22:20else will be in beside the core band.
- 22:22And right, yeah, I mean, I think it was great he got in.
- 22:25I, you know, Christ, I'm trying to think if there's other bands
- 22:29that. D Angelo should be in.
- 22:32If you're. Going to have R&B singers in D.
- 22:35Yeah, you would. Be in like he really, you know,
- 22:38he kind of reinvented the. For what he did, yeah.
- 22:40I mean, I mean that I mean that genre was was unfortunately, you
- 22:43know, then he he just fucking blew up.
- 22:47There's neo soul because of him, right.
- 22:49You know, he he single brought that fucking him.
- 22:52Jill Scott, the roots, Badoo, you know what I mean?
- 22:56Yeah, I mean so so they all you know, I I think that, you know,
- 23:01they got forgotten a lot, which is really awful.
- 23:03You know, there's so much better than a lot of the shit that, you
- 23:06know, you hear on the, you know, on the radio.
- 23:08So yeah, I mean, obviously I would love to see him.
- 23:12I have to think next time we chat, you know, I'll be able to
- 23:14give you a Yeah. Yeah, well, I'll see you on the
- 23:17road or, you know, whatever. We'll do this again sometime.
- 23:21Yeah, at a festival or somewhere else.
- 23:22But like, yeah, of course. And last, as always, I end with
- 23:26a wild card question. What is the last good book you
- 23:28read? Oh Christ, the last good book I
- 23:30read. I finished the Steely Dam book,
- 23:33which I thought was brilliant, so really good.
- 23:37And oh, the Gorman from, you know, the old Black Rose.
- 23:44That was a great fucking book. I mean, and I just finished the
- 23:50Jeff Tweedy book that he's talking about songs.
- 23:53Nice. That's yeah, that I saw is on my
- 23:54list. Also.
- 23:55I kind of wanted, even though I don't think they're a Hall of
- 23:57Fame band, I wanted Black Crows to get in so those old guys like
- 24:01Mark Ford and Gorman would show up and shit on Chris and Rich in
- 24:06public. They were, I mean.
- 24:07They're, they were my favorite band during that, you know, in
- 24:09like 90. Those first 3-4 records and I'll
- 24:13say the page Black Crows record is playing.
- 24:15Change the fucking for me man. I mean, we used to have like
- 24:18handle pies, so like a 175 of Beam and listen to that album.
- 24:23And so, yeah, I didn't think they would get in, you know, but
- 24:28you know, yeah. I mean, you know, that kind of
- 24:30changed my that's another band that was just growing up.
- 24:33You're like, holy fuck. Because they were so different,
- 24:35you know, I mean, they weren't like, you know, you know, they
- 24:38were more of a 70s vibe had that, you know, Rod Stewart, the
- 24:41faces kind of, you know, the Stones vibe, you know, packed
- 24:44with like a Graham Parsons, that sort of, you know, delicacy.
- 24:49Graham got in as an influence, which is nice.
- 24:51So we'll get look at that. I just came from Joshua Tree
- 24:53from the metal festival and everybody the the Grand Parsons
- 24:57died in the desert. And then his friend set him on
- 25:00fire. Like, yeah.
- 25:02He had, yeah. Fucking funeral.
- 25:03Crazy. Every Uber driver tried to tell
- 25:05me that story. Yeah.
- 25:06Like, hey, have you heard about Grand Parsons?
- 25:08Yeah, totally. I have.
- 25:10Totally. Yeah, man, so good to talk to
- 25:12you, Mark. Thank you.
- 25:12I'm just proud of you guys. Thank you so much for this new
- 25:16record coming out on Black Light Media Gozu 6 with the Roman
- 25:20numerals, not VI dumbasses and read a book and once again
- 25:26brother, just a pleasure to always talk to you.
- 25:28Give my best to Doug in the guide.
- 25:29Thank you. Will do.
- 25:30Thank you brother. Take care, man.
