- 0:02We usually think about the term equality in relation to society,
- 0:07or the economy SRI, aurobindo uses the term to describe an
- 0:12inner psychological state, that keeps the practitioner of the
- 0:16yoga focused on the inner being, and it's spiritual practices,
- 0:21rather than having the attention drawn out to react to people
- 0:25events and circumstances outside.
- 0:29This is part of the tuning and focusing process that aligns the
- 0:34Seeker with the higher force that is manifesting and is
- 0:38therefore an essential part of the practice of yoga.
- 0:44We are usually easily provoked into a reaction that gets the
- 0:48mind turning the emotion stirred up and the vital energies in
- 0:52action. This process occurs virtually
- 0:56automatically for most people. We then see eruptions of anger
- 1:01or fear or depression arising as the being reacts to the
- 1:05situations. The attention in this case is
- 1:08fixated on these outer events and thus not focused on the
- 1:13inner truth. or the spiritual aspiration through observation
- 1:18and practice, the secret can begin to distance from these
- 1:22automatic reactions and maintain the connection to the higher
- 1:26force, and remain receptive to its operation, through the being
- 1:33Equality in this sense is not necessarily acquiescence in
- 1:37whatever happens. It is not a passive weakness or
- 1:42any kind of a withdrawal or inability to respond.
- 1:46Rather, it is a status that allows a more complete and
- 1:51Powerful response according to the Divine intention.
- 1:56By allowing the higher Force to manifest and accomplish what it
- 2:01needs to do in each situation. SRI aurobindo writes, quote
- 2:08equality is the chief support of the true spiritual consciousness
- 2:13and is it, is this from which a Sadiq deviates?
- 2:16When he allows a vital movement to carry him away in feeling, or
- 2:21speech or action? Equality is not the same thing
- 2:25as forbearance though. Undoubtedly a settled equality,
- 2:31immensely extends, even illimitably.
- 2:35Man's power of endurance and forbearance.
- 2:38Equality means a quiet and unmoved mind and vital, it means
- 2:44not to be touched or disturbed by things that happen or things
- 2:49said or done to you. But to look at them with a
- 2:52straight, look free from the distortions, created by personal
- 2:56feeling and to try to understand what is behind them.
- 3:01Why they happen, what is to be learned from them, what is it in
- 3:06oneself, which they are It against and what inner profit or
- 3:11progress one can make out of them.
- 3:15It means self Mastery over the vital movements anger and
- 3:19sensitiveness and pride, as well as desire and the rest.
- 3:24Not to let them get hold of the emotional being, and disturb the
- 3:28inner peace not to speak and act in the rush and impulsion of
- 3:33these things always to act and speak out of a calm inner poise.
- 3:38As of the spirit, it is not easy to have this equality in any
- 3:43full perfect measure. But one should always try more
- 3:47and more to make it the basis of one's inner State and outer
- 3:52movements. Equality means another thing to
- 3:57have an equal view of men and their nature and acts and the
- 4:01forces that move them. It helps one to see the truth
- 4:05about them by pushing away from the mind, all personal feeling
- 4:09in one seeing and judgment and even all the mental bias.
- 4:15Personal feeling always, distorts and makes one see and
- 4:19men's actions, not only the actions themselves.
- 4:24But things behind them, which more often than not are not
- 4:28their misunderstanding, Miss judgment, which could have been
- 4:33avoided are the result. Things of small, consequence,
- 4:38assume larger proportions. I have seen that more than half
- 4:42of the untoward happenings of this kind in life are due to
- 4:46this cause But in ordinary life, personal feeling and
- 4:51sensitiveness are a constant part of human nature and may be
- 4:56needed there for self-defense. Although I think even they're a
- 5:01strong large and equal attitude towards men and things would be
- 5:07a much better line of defense but for a Sadiq, to surmount
- 5:12them and live rather in the calm strength of the spirit.
