- 0:18Speaker 3: Tuesday morning, I walk into the office, Induces already, you know,
- 0:22Speaker 3: we got it.
- 0:23Speaker 2: What's your draft breakdown? This?
- 0:24Speaker 4: That?
- 0:24Speaker 2: The other thing.
- 0:25Speaker 5: I was like, Mike, we just got back from the
- 0:26Speaker 5: super Bowl that yesterday.
- 0:27Speaker 2: No, turn the page. You got a poll?
- 0:30Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, how BIG's your pole?
- 0:31Speaker 7: I've been to so many season take a lot of
- 0:33Speaker 7: pictures because it's it's all going to be a blur,
- 0:35Speaker 7: and so I tried to do that day after day
- 0:38Speaker 7: with that everything.
- 0:39Speaker 8: Fred's anti pictures.
- 0:41Speaker 2: If you're at something cool like the super Bowl or
- 0:44Speaker 2: you know, Italy or whatever. What I don't like is
- 0:46Speaker 2: taking pictures of yourself at these places, like what's the point?
- 0:51Speaker 3: And then they get their butts kicked in the super
- 0:52Speaker 3: Bowl by a really good Seattle defensive front, and now
- 0:56Speaker 3: all five of them need to go.
- 0:57Speaker 9: And it's just you can do that stuff on your time.
- 1:00Speaker 9: I'll get into the Shirley Temple.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Does he need to be a little bit more of
- 1:02Speaker 2: the checkdown?
- 1:03Speaker 6: Charlie at times when the times strike about Yeah, if.
- 1:07Speaker 3: They had checkdowns for him from the ball, Okay, I
- 1:11Speaker 3: didn't mean to trigger you.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I was dancing a little too hard.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I'm glad. I'm glad you had a good This is
- 1:21Speaker 2: Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:22Speaker 10: Presented by Toyota's official website for deals by a Toyota
- 1:26Speaker 10: dot Com.
- 1:29Speaker 6: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:31Speaker 2: It is Tuesday here at Jiles Stadium. We're in the
- 1:35Speaker 2: throes of the off season still, you know, kind of
- 1:39Speaker 2: talking about the Super Bowl in the aftermath, and you
- 1:42Speaker 2: know what that means in the grand scheme of things.
- 1:45Speaker 6: So we'll do that.
- 1:46Speaker 2: We'll talk about free agency. I see Paul came with
- 1:50Speaker 2: a big list of all the available fas and UFAs
- 1:54Speaker 2: and alphabetical.
- 1:55Speaker 6: Yeah, we can get into that team and position.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Pauls rankings, he puts the out every year, his top.
- 2:02Speaker 2: It's just maybe a little bit of draft. Although warning,
- 2:05Speaker 2: I haven't started my deep dive yet, have you did.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I did that in the last couple of days. Actually
- 2:12Speaker 1: ends and edges.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Evan's heaven never stopped diving, so he did. He's been
- 2:17Speaker 2: in full draft speedo for the last.
- 2:20Speaker 9: Couple of months on safety and Toledo who doesn't have
- 2:24Speaker 9: good eyes, just.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Like read option and he's just looking the wrong place,
- 2:29Speaker 3: and like, where are you going?
- 2:31Speaker 8: Seriously?
- 2:31Speaker 2: I walk in.
- 2:32Speaker 9: I walked in the bullpen today, Freddy, and he's got
- 2:35Speaker 9: a Toledo game on, and I go, jesus, if we're into.
- 2:40Speaker 6: Match the MUDs mud Hens.
- 2:42Speaker 5: Well, I believe so.
- 2:45Speaker 3: But they they have a first round safety that a
- 2:50Speaker 3: lot of people like. And Quin Mitchell went to Toledo too,
- 2:53Speaker 3: so it's.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Not like they never know every every team every once
- 2:56Speaker 2: in a while, you know, I was just you know,
- 2:57Speaker 2: I know, I haven't I haven't started either. I'm what's
- 3:00Speaker 2: Reddy Wyoming? Had?
- 3:01Speaker 6: Josh Allen?
- 3:02Speaker 9: Yeah, all right, Josh Allen, Yeah, you never know.
- 3:06Speaker 6: It's it's ball, it's me.
- 3:07Speaker 2: It's due since Matt and Alex and the booth and
- 3:11Speaker 2: uh eight five five past five hundred is the way
- 3:14Speaker 2: to call the show. Podcast at Patriots dot com is
- 3:16Speaker 2: the way to email the show. So where do we start?
- 3:19Speaker 2: Where do we start? Do we start with any of
- 3:21Speaker 2: the comments that have been thrown around post Super Bowl
- 3:25Speaker 2: or anything like that?
- 3:26Speaker 3: And you know, I think that the Terrell Williams zach
- 3:31Speaker 3: Kre thing is probably where.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Yeah, at least it's yeah, it's kind of the Patriots
- 3:36Speaker 2: headline wants to.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Throw that out there.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah, they've got to interview somebody.
- 3:41Speaker 7: So they're going to promote Terrell Williams to a high
- 3:43Speaker 7: ranking team officials. I don't know what that position would be,
- 3:45Speaker 7: maybe assist assistant head coach, something like that makes sense.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Though. We were at the media night and.
- 3:51Speaker 7: And you know, Terrell Williams was standing out there for
- 3:54Speaker 7: you know, a full hour just about and I mean
- 3:56Speaker 7: he fell down. It seemed like it was still asking
- 3:58Speaker 7: him a lot. I mean, everyone was so excited to
- 4:00Speaker 7: be around him and talk to him, and it was
- 4:01Speaker 7: a great moment, and then you were reminded that, you know,
- 4:04Speaker 7: he is still recovering. So it seems like what they
- 4:07Speaker 7: got to do their Rooney rule stuff, They got to
- 4:09Speaker 7: interview external candidates for the defensive coordinator position.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I don't see.
- 4:13Speaker 8: Differing opinions on that, do they do?
- 4:16Speaker 3: You have to interview at least two minority candidates. They
- 4:20Speaker 3: can be virtual. These don't have the only the head
- 4:23Speaker 3: coach interviews have to be in person. These ones could
- 4:25Speaker 3: be virtual. But yes, technically now we can talk about
- 4:32Speaker 3: to me, that makes no sense, Like they have a
- 4:34Speaker 3: guy that.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Just called the defense defense. We called it for.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Twenty weeks of the season, including a run to the
- 4:39Speaker 3: Super Bowl. He's obviously earned it. And now these minority
- 4:44Speaker 3: candidates are really going to have what are are not
- 4:46Speaker 3: real interviews and they're just being forced to do them,
- 4:50Speaker 3: which I think is kind of crazy. But I guess
- 4:52Speaker 3: they will have an opening at inside linebackers coach, so
- 4:55Speaker 3: this might be so they might be able to use
- 4:57Speaker 3: some of these interviews as a way to get.
- 5:00Speaker 6: To know people. Yeah, and it's good for them for
- 5:02Speaker 6: them to be known.
- 5:04Speaker 7: Yeah, I just say I'm I'm a little disappointed for
- 5:06Speaker 7: Terrell Williams. I mean, this was a huge opportunity for
- 5:08Speaker 7: him this year to finally be named a defensive coordinator.
- 5:11Speaker 7: Has been in the league forever, It's been a defensive
- 5:13Speaker 7: line coach for a while, and I'm sure he was
- 5:15Speaker 7: waiting for this opportunity and he finally gets it and
- 5:17Speaker 7: he gets you know, not only hit with with cancer,
- 5:20Speaker 7: but I mean he's you know, dealing.
- 5:22Speaker 1: With multiple health issues. So but huge opportunity for Zach Core.
- 5:26Speaker 7: These are the kind of things you see happen where
- 5:28Speaker 7: opportunity opens up a guy comes in and you know,
- 5:30Speaker 7: really does a good job, and now I think it's
- 5:32Speaker 7: going to earn I mean.
- 5:33Speaker 2: For Patriots fans, I think it should give you some
- 5:35Speaker 2: a little bit of comfort that, you know, Josh McDaniel's
- 5:38Speaker 2: going to be back, Zach Corer is going to be back,
- 5:40Speaker 2: So there's not going to be any wholesale changes to
- 5:42Speaker 2: the system.
- 5:44Speaker 7: Ashton Grant too, we should mention that because you know, yeah,
- 5:46Speaker 7: the Raiders were interested in him, so yeah, just continuity
- 5:50Speaker 7: for Drake and to have a second year with Josh.
- 5:52Speaker 7: I'm also interested just to see, you know, now that
- 5:55Speaker 7: they really know Drake inside and out after a season
- 5:58Speaker 7: with him, how does that shape their offseason plan? You know,
- 6:00Speaker 7: we talk about what kind of weapons do they target,
- 6:03Speaker 7: what kind of tight ends, what kind of receivers you know,
- 6:05Speaker 7: go best with Drake with his deep, deep, all accuracy,
- 6:09Speaker 7: his you know, maybe maybe this isn't incorrect, but my
- 6:11Speaker 7: feeling preference of you know, bigger targets that he likes those. So,
- 6:15Speaker 7: you know, how do they continue to not only tweak
- 6:17Speaker 7: the get the playbook, but the roster around Drake.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And building on him. This is the time to do it,
- 6:21Speaker 1: you know.
- 6:22Speaker 2: So There's been a lot of talk, especially on Paul Shows,
- 6:24Speaker 2: about Drake's demeanor during the Super Bowl and how Vrabels
- 6:31Speaker 2: seemed to have to follow him around prop him up
- 6:34Speaker 2: and he.
- 6:35Speaker 6: Was really down.
- 6:36Speaker 2: And uh, you know, I kind of agree with some
- 6:40Speaker 2: of the comments I heard on Paul shows.
- 6:43Speaker 6: He needs to he needs to be out there and
- 6:45Speaker 6: be a leader. He can't be the one moping.
- 6:48Speaker 2: He's got to be He's got to be the one
- 6:50Speaker 2: propping everybody else up. Uh, you know, And you hate
- 6:54Speaker 2: to compare anyone to Tom Brady, but Tom Brady never
- 6:57Speaker 2: gave up like he would. He'd be pissed, he'd throw
- 6:59Speaker 2: his helmet. He'd be pissed, but he'd be pissed and
- 7:01Speaker 2: he'd throw his helmet. But he'd be like, we need
- 7:04Speaker 2: to do better. And he wouldn't, you know, be it
- 7:08Speaker 2: with him, you know, in within himself. He'd be out
- 7:11Speaker 2: there talking to the offensive lineman, talking to his receivers,
- 7:15Speaker 2: urging them on. Obviously, there were times where I, you know,
- 7:20Speaker 2: I remember regular season games in certain seasons where he
- 7:23Speaker 2: was just sitting on the sideline fuming. But that's something
- 7:27Speaker 2: I think Drake needs to work on. He's young, you know,
- 7:31Speaker 2: I don't know if he has someone that he talks to,
- 7:33Speaker 2: like a sports psychiatrist or somebody that he can talk
- 7:37Speaker 2: to about things like that, but I wouldn't. I don't
- 7:40Speaker 2: think it would hurt.
- 7:42Speaker 7: I kind of agree with you, Fred, I mean, I
- 7:43Speaker 7: you know, it's it seems like a sports talk media point,
- 7:47Speaker 7: but I like you, I kind of agree, and Brady
- 7:50Speaker 7: would get so pissed and you could tell like he
- 7:51Speaker 7: would be disgusted and he'd be walking off the field
- 7:54Speaker 7: and the offense could feel that he was the one
- 7:57Speaker 7: who held the offense accountable.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I haven't seen all the my up stuff.
- 8:00Speaker 7: I know Morgan Moses I think was also recorded giving
- 8:03Speaker 7: like kind.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Of a pump up speech.
- 8:04Speaker 7: So it's something Rabel has been trying to work with
- 8:07Speaker 7: Drake May all year on being more vocal, being more
- 8:09Speaker 7: in command, and holding guys accountable. You can only hope
- 8:12Speaker 7: all this experience will help point him in that direction.
- 8:14Speaker 7: But I agree he's got to be the guy that
- 8:16Speaker 7: I think he.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Does, and so, you know, I don't want to make
- 8:19Speaker 2: too much of it, but going forward, I think that's
- 8:22Speaker 2: something Rabel will certainly continue hammering away at him, and
- 8:27Speaker 2: I think it needs to start in the spring. The
- 8:29Speaker 2: moment he gets back in the building, I think if
- 8:32Speaker 2: I was Mike Rabel, I'd sit down with Drake May
- 8:35Speaker 2: one on one and say, this is your team. You know,
- 8:39Speaker 2: you're I want people to look to you for the
- 8:43Speaker 2: leadership and make it clear that that's what I expect
- 8:47Speaker 2: from you.
- 8:48Speaker 7: Yeah, and you've played in a Super Bowl, that you've
- 8:49Speaker 7: gone on the road in the playoffs, you've played in
- 8:51Speaker 7: an NFC Championship. There's you know, not saying he's checked
- 8:54Speaker 7: all the boxes, but he's kind of checked all the
- 8:56Speaker 7: boxes in terms of challenges you can face. So now
- 8:58Speaker 7: you got to start owning it and you got to
- 9:00Speaker 7: start holding the rest of the offense, you know.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Up to a count. Yeah, you got to play up
- 9:03Speaker 1: to that speed too as well.
- 9:06Speaker 7: That's you know, that was the thing we're thinking about
- 9:07Speaker 7: is like, you know during the game where you're like
- 9:10Speaker 7: freaking six nothing like come on, and you're so used
- 9:13Speaker 7: to one play Tom Brady thing where you know you
- 9:16Speaker 7: knew he was going to kick in. But I also
- 9:18Speaker 7: think of the Atlanta super Bowl where they fell down
- 9:20Speaker 7: twenty three, where they were moving the ball right, they
- 9:22Speaker 7: were moving the ball, they were having success.
- 9:24Speaker 1: That was what they were not having in the Super Bowl.
- 9:26Speaker 7: There was no reason to believe that there were signs
- 9:29Speaker 7: of life from the offense.
- 9:30Speaker 1: It was just, you know, they never found any.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you were looking for that little magic thing from
- 9:34Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels, but I don't think it was it was there.
- 9:38Speaker 2: I don't think it was to be had in that game.
- 9:40Speaker 2: And unfortunately, but like you said, yeah, you're nine to
- 9:44Speaker 2: nothing at half. You know, that's like nothing.
- 9:47Speaker 6: In the NFL. Well it felt like more.
- 9:50Speaker 2: But you know you're thinking it, Well, if all of
- 9:53Speaker 2: a sudden the offensive line could start playing better, Well,
- 9:57Speaker 2: it's not that easy.
- 9:57Speaker 7: They just play a better run defense. I'd be curious,
- 10:00Speaker 7: you know, in the game. I mean, I think Seahawks
- 10:02Speaker 7: win that game nine times out of ten. Maybe, but
- 10:04Speaker 7: maybe you stop the run a little better, You put
- 10:06Speaker 7: a little more pressure on Sam Darnold. Maybe those millimeters
- 10:09Speaker 7: you came from turnovers and mistakes, maybe that makes a
- 10:11Speaker 7: little bit of a difference.
- 10:12Speaker 1: But yeah, it was it meant to be.
- 10:15Speaker 3: I did not care for the micd up stuff that's
- 10:18Speaker 3: on a don't like what what didn't you care for
- 10:21Speaker 3: a lot.
- 10:21Speaker 5: Of convenient editing, I would say in some of the so.
- 10:25Speaker 2: To be clear, this is NFL film stuff. Yeah, I
- 10:28Speaker 2: just not us, not us.
- 10:31Speaker 3: I just like, yeah, I saw the same clips that
- 10:33Speaker 3: you guys all saw. Were there are other clips that
- 10:36Speaker 3: didn't make the Final Cup because they were trying to
- 10:38Speaker 3: tell a story about how one team blew out the
- 10:40Speaker 3: other team in the Super Bowl.
- 10:41Speaker 6: Like okay, So so the.
- 10:44Speaker 3: One that's going around that's really popular right now is
- 10:46Speaker 3: about Christian Barmore. And he's like, you know, as somebody
- 10:50Speaker 3: that has been around Christian Barmore a little bit, I
- 10:52Speaker 3: kind of speak Christian Barmore like I understand as.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Well as anyone can, you know.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Like he was saying that.
- 11:01Speaker 3: It's not us, it's not us, and everybody was like
- 11:03Speaker 3: he's blaming the offense. It's like no, he's saying this
- 11:05Speaker 3: wasn't us, Like this wasn't this is who we are,
- 11:08Speaker 3: This is our level of performance. This isn't our standard.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Uh.
- 11:12Speaker 3: You know, we're not stopping the run, that's not that's
- 11:14Speaker 3: not what we do. We're not scoring, you know, this
- 11:16Speaker 3: is not we. I think he was frustrated that they
- 11:19Speaker 3: kind of let the game get away from them and
- 11:21Speaker 3: weren't able to you know, pull it back in I
- 11:24Speaker 3: don't know. There's just so when you're painting a picture
- 11:27Speaker 3: of Seattle's this dominant force and this great football team,
- 11:30Speaker 3: it's it's easy to kind of put a lot of
- 11:32Speaker 3: cuts in there of Drake May looking sad and somber
- 11:36Speaker 3: on the sideline and all that kind of stuff when
- 11:38Speaker 3: the idea is Seattle won this game and Seattle blew
- 11:41Speaker 3: out the Patriots and they're this dominant, you know, dark
- 11:44Speaker 3: side defense, And not that they don't deserve all the credit.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I just I thought that the edit that NFL Films
- 11:50Speaker 3: put together made the Patriots look really bad and not just.
- 11:55Speaker 9: So these are these are two different things to me,
- 11:57Speaker 9: and the barb wing is not about an edit. It's
- 12:02Speaker 9: about how it's perceived. And I think Evan's explanation is
- 12:06Speaker 9: more than plausible that he might not be pointing fingers
- 12:10Speaker 9: the way some people and I did see some people,
- 12:12Speaker 9: not everybody, but some people said, wow, he seems like
- 12:15Speaker 9: he's calling out the offense. We're not carrying their you know,
- 12:18Speaker 9: they're part of the load. And I think Evan could
- 12:21Speaker 9: be right. He might just be saying this isn't us,
- 12:24Speaker 9: Like this ain't us as a team or as a defense.
- 12:27Speaker 9: Stopping the run. He might have just been talking to
- 12:29Speaker 9: Milton Williams. This ain't us, you and me. We're not
- 12:32Speaker 9: stopping the run, right, We've stopped the run all year,
- 12:34Speaker 9: and this guy's running all over us. So I think
- 12:37Speaker 9: that's I think Evan's point of view on that is
- 12:40Speaker 9: more than possible. The edits and the cuts, to me,
- 12:45Speaker 9: are a different thing, and they do this every year,
- 12:48Speaker 9: and you can tell sometimes.
- 12:50Speaker 8: They're very good at what they do with those.
- 12:52Speaker 9: But sometimes you can go and you can look, and
- 12:55Speaker 9: when you're a psychotic like me and you recognize certain
- 12:58Speaker 9: situations of the game, you can tell that they put
- 13:02Speaker 9: that edit in the middle of the third quarter, that
- 13:04Speaker 9: play happened in the beginning of.
- 13:05Speaker 2: The first quarter, and you can see it famous for that, and.
- 13:08Speaker 9: They do that all the time. Now, I didn't necessarily
- 13:11Speaker 9: see most of it. I've seen the clips that have
- 13:13Speaker 9: been played. I haven't watched this through, but NFL Films
- 13:17Speaker 9: does sort of creatively edit some of these things at
- 13:21Speaker 9: times and tell the story. Yeah, and they're trying to
- 13:25Speaker 9: trying to tell a narrative, and so I'm.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Not trying to that's not not either.
- 13:30Speaker 3: That's my point is that I wouldn't watch these clips
- 13:33Speaker 3: that are getting put out there on these micd ups
- 13:35Speaker 3: where let's also remember that they're clipping like thirty seconds
- 13:38Speaker 3: of like a forty minute show, and it's that's what's
- 13:41Speaker 3: going around the internet. Like I just wouldn't put too
- 13:44Speaker 3: much stock into it, because you know.
- 13:46Speaker 2: It's trying.
- 13:46Speaker 3: They're trying to tell an editorialized story of the Super Bowl,
- 13:51Speaker 3: and you know, is that really was Drake may always
- 13:54Speaker 3: like that. It was either like that for four straight quarters,
- 13:56Speaker 3: was where there are just some moments where he was,
- 13:59Speaker 3: you know, a little bit down, because we certainly saw
- 14:01Speaker 3: that even from Brady at times where he was grumpy
- 14:04Speaker 3: or he.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Was frustrated or whatever.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Would so also do it.
- 14:07Speaker 3: And I just would say to me, like, I just
- 14:10Speaker 3: wouldn't put too much stock into No, it's conveniently trimmed class.
- 14:14Speaker 1: I've said it a couple of times.
- 14:16Speaker 7: It's thirty one team suck right now, and you lose
- 14:18Speaker 7: the Super Bowl, you get the suck spotlight for the
- 14:20Speaker 7: whole week and everything is everything that's wrong with you.
- 14:23Speaker 7: And that's what happens when and that's why it stinks
- 14:24Speaker 7: to lose the super Bowl because a lot of times
- 14:27Speaker 7: you come away from this week feeling like your whole
- 14:29Speaker 7: season just got a big dump taken on it and
- 14:31Speaker 7: that you didn't do anything good all year. And I
- 14:32Speaker 7: mean I got past that quick, but I will say
- 14:35Speaker 7: I really did. I did watch the NFL films they did.
- 14:37Speaker 7: They do the one with no sound like, there's no
- 14:38Speaker 7: micd up, it's just great shots to music and telling.
- 14:41Speaker 1: The story that way. I thought that one was was
- 14:43Speaker 1: really cool. I mean, still a lot of shots of
- 14:45Speaker 1: dejected patriots.
- 14:46Speaker 3: But and I'm not even saying it was bad content,
- 14:49Speaker 3: right right, I'm just saying to then take something from it,
- 14:52Speaker 3: like it's this is who they are and this is
- 14:54Speaker 3: the story.
- 14:55Speaker 9: And I would say the bigger picture thing that Fred
- 14:57Speaker 9: and Mike are concerned with with men, I think there's
- 15:00Speaker 9: some validity too, because I think it was a big
- 15:03Speaker 9: point of emphasis from Mike Rabel way back in April
- 15:06Speaker 9: and may yep, you know, maybe he should have him
- 15:09Speaker 9: have Robert Spallaine talk to him, you know. But I
- 15:13Speaker 9: do think that Mike thought that that was something that
- 15:16Speaker 9: he was on very early. Like how many times do
- 15:19Speaker 9: we see our own micd up stuff at OTAs or
- 15:22Speaker 9: Mini camp or whatever, and Mike is imploring him talk
- 15:26Speaker 9: to them, lead them, you know, get in, you know,
- 15:28Speaker 9: be you know, be be the voice, be the vocal leader.
- 15:32Speaker 9: So it's clearly something that Drake is probably not a
- 15:36Speaker 9: natural ad and Rabel recognizes it and he's trying to
- 15:39Speaker 9: draw more out of him. I agree with Evan's Lodger
- 15:42Speaker 9: point about the creativity of the edits. I think sometimes
- 15:45Speaker 9: can be deceptive, But I think the takeaway that I
- 15:49Speaker 9: think Fred started this with is probably some some truth
- 15:53Speaker 9: to with with with Drake. He I think he needs
- 15:55Speaker 9: to be a little bit more in tune with Yeah,
- 15:58Speaker 9: I know things aren't going very well from me right now,
- 16:00Speaker 9: but I need to lift these guys up and not
- 16:03Speaker 9: continue to give them the belief that we can turn
- 16:05Speaker 9: this around.
- 16:06Speaker 2: And not only that, I want him in McDaniel's here,
- 16:09Speaker 2: not just McDaniels in his ear. I want him going
- 16:12Speaker 2: back to the bench and said, this is what I'm seeing,
- 16:15Speaker 2: let's try this or stop with that call. It's not
- 16:19Speaker 2: gonna work.
- 16:19Speaker 6: I'm telling you know. Maybe he's doing that that one.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I don't know, but I hope that that's happening, that
- 16:24Speaker 2: he's as much part.
- 16:25Speaker 9: Of what Evan's talking about, Like maybe that's happening and
- 16:28Speaker 9: you're not seeing it right. It looks like he's just
- 16:29Speaker 9: this like subservient kind of right.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, MOPI it will come on, pick it up.
- 16:36Speaker 7: I mean, we did hear comments from the players this
- 16:38Speaker 7: year though, that he's improved on holding guys accountable, telling
- 16:42Speaker 7: you know, receivers how I want things done and all that.
- 16:44Speaker 1: So he has made strides.
- 16:45Speaker 7: But you know, again he's a twenty three young kid.
- 16:48Speaker 7: He's young, yep, and.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Like I said, he got his he got his face eat.
- 16:52Speaker 2: We want it all right away because we had it all,
- 16:54Speaker 2: you know, so we want we want it back to
- 16:56Speaker 2: where it was, and it's going to take time.
- 16:58Speaker 6: It is, yeah, it is.
- 17:00Speaker 7: I mean it does not to always bring it back
- 17:01Speaker 7: to Brady, but it's just that it makes you appreciate
- 17:03Speaker 7: what made him great and that games could be going
- 17:06Speaker 7: like games like that. We were like, shoot, we ain't
- 17:07Speaker 7: got it today, and he had the ability and the
- 17:10Speaker 7: mental toughness.
- 17:10Speaker 6: He'll figure it out of it around And that's what you.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Know, Drake aspire to.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Like not everybody's wired that right, right, inspired say, a
- 17:17Speaker 3: lot of athletes nowadays especially or not necessarily wired that way.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Not today but are the great ones all wired that way?
- 17:24Speaker 11: Well?
- 17:25Speaker 5: I don't think No, I'm not.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Can you name a great one who didn't have that fire,
- 17:30Speaker 2: that never gave up. And you know, I'm not saying
- 17:35Speaker 2: they were always like in their teammates face, but they
- 17:39Speaker 2: always they just hated to lose so much, and they
- 17:43Speaker 2: they figured things out in the biggest moments.
- 17:45Speaker 5: I mean, I think that's different.
- 17:47Speaker 2: I mean, that's what makes them great, right, That's what
- 17:50Speaker 2: doesn't that isn't that what's.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Like I wouldn't say that I watched like Patrick Mahomes
- 17:54Speaker 3: and think that he has the same leadership style as
- 17:57Speaker 3: Tom Brady. I think he has the same competitive drive
- 18:00Speaker 3: is Tom Brady, But I don't think that he's like
- 18:02Speaker 3: tom Brady's like going up and down the line, like
- 18:04Speaker 3: barking at I gotta play tougher, you gotta play hard
- 18:07Speaker 3: like I don't.
- 18:07Speaker 5: I don't look at it.
- 18:09Speaker 6: I don't seen Mahomes kind of do that.
- 18:10Speaker 7: I mean I don't even really need that stuff. I mean,
- 18:13Speaker 7: I just need you to play your best when the
- 18:14Speaker 7: game's on the line, and no matter.
- 18:15Speaker 1: How the game.
- 18:16Speaker 3: I think those are two different things though, right, Like
- 18:18Speaker 3: but like being you know, I don't know.
- 18:20Speaker 5: This is not my side of the street.
- 18:21Speaker 3: I like, yeah, like it just I don't know if
- 18:26Speaker 3: like everybody is wired that way. I think you're not
- 18:29Speaker 3: the cross sports but like Jason Tatum gets a lot
- 18:31Speaker 3: of flack for not being that kind of guy, you know,
- 18:35Speaker 3: not being the demonstrative, raw raw leader type of guy.
- 18:40Speaker 5: Uh you know that.
- 18:41Speaker 3: And I think that Drake may is kind of getting
- 18:44Speaker 3: talked about similarly to that.
- 18:45Speaker 6: But it's not that a guy that the rest of
- 18:48Speaker 6: the team looks to.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Is the best player. But I don't think that that necessarily.
- 18:52Speaker 2: That doesn't answer my question. Is he the guy that
- 18:56Speaker 2: they look to when things get tough?
- 18:59Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 18:59Speaker 3: I'm I don't probably not, but I don't know if
- 19:03Speaker 3: you need to be like I don't know if that necessarily.
- 19:06Speaker 2: I don't know. I think I think that's what separates
- 19:09Speaker 2: the great ones.
- 19:11Speaker 3: I think what separates the great ones that they're great,
- 19:13Speaker 3: that they play well like. It's easy to lead, like
- 19:16Speaker 3: to fall behind somebody when they're playing well like, it's
- 19:20Speaker 3: it's not I don't know. I just I think that
- 19:22Speaker 3: there we kind of latch onto that archetype of like leader,
- 19:26Speaker 3: and that that's how it needs to be done, and I.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Don't know if it's the only path.
- 19:29Speaker 1: I don't need that.
- 19:30Speaker 9: Yeah, it's not for now because this is, you know,
- 19:33Speaker 9: probably a bigger picture thing. But I do wonder if
- 19:36Speaker 9: it is kind of what Evan's talking about, like they're
- 19:39Speaker 9: not all wired that way. I think it's like less
- 19:42Speaker 9: and less a wired that way. Now, like you asked
- 19:44Speaker 9: the question, can you think of a great one who
- 19:47Speaker 9: wasn't like that?
- 19:48Speaker 2: Well?
- 19:48Speaker 9: Can you think of somebody who's not really wired like
- 19:52Speaker 9: to win?
- 19:54Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 19:55Speaker 6: I mean I don't know, but not everyone's not everyone,
- 19:58Speaker 6: but a really.
- 19:59Speaker 9: Good player that you just don't think he cares about
- 20:01Speaker 9: like as much as he should about winning.
- 20:03Speaker 6: Well, so you said real good player? Is he a
- 20:06Speaker 6: great Yeah?
- 20:06Speaker 9: Like, I mean obviously if he's a bad player, he
- 20:08Speaker 9: probably doesn't care.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Yeah, right, you know what I mean.
- 20:10Speaker 9: Like, so, could you make an argument like Josh Allen
- 20:14Speaker 9: and Lamar Jackson are as talented as anybody in the league,
- 20:16Speaker 9: but they haven't been able to get there?
- 20:17Speaker 8: Are they not wired that?
- 20:18Speaker 9: One think Josh Allen is certainly why.
- 20:21Speaker 6: I was going to say, that's what makes him great.
- 20:23Speaker 3: But I think a lot of people think Lamar isn't
- 20:25Speaker 3: and I think a lot of people think Justin Herbert
- 20:27Speaker 3: is in you know, I.
- 20:28Speaker 8: Think that's that's a really good one.
- 20:30Speaker 9: Justin Herbert, I I like, but I think is definitely
- 20:32Speaker 9: in that camp. And I and I wonder if what
- 20:34Speaker 9: Evan's talking about is more kind of generational. You're gonna
- 20:40Speaker 9: get more and more of this, you know, like they
- 20:42Speaker 9: don't come out the same way. And this is not
- 20:44Speaker 9: please don't. This is not old man yelling at clouds
- 20:47Speaker 9: like I'm not telling you, Oh, in my day, you cared.
- 20:50Speaker 9: And I totally recognize that people are changing lifestyles, are
- 20:56Speaker 9: changing attitudes everything that it's that old school coach barking
- 21:01Speaker 9: at you all the time doesn't work anymore. There's a
- 21:03Speaker 9: different way of doing it. It's not better, it's not worse,
- 21:06Speaker 9: it's different. And that's what these these kids come up
- 21:09Speaker 9: with now. And I do wonder if maybe part of
- 21:12Speaker 9: that is is it well, you know what, we're prepared.
- 21:16Speaker 9: I think Drake May wanted to win every bit as
- 21:18Speaker 9: badly as Sam Darnold and Kenneth Walker, did you know.
- 21:21Speaker 9: I don't think that he went into that game saying, well,
- 21:23Speaker 9: that's okay if we lose, because we're ahead of schedule.
- 21:25Speaker 9: But I do wonder if it hurts, Yeah, today's athlete,
- 21:30Speaker 9: not Drake May Today's athlete like it hurt.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Well, I think we might be splitting hairs a little bit.
- 21:36Speaker 2: But I look at the great ones as it's not
- 21:39Speaker 2: just demonstrative, it's leading by example, like whether it's Ted
- 21:44Speaker 2: like Ted Williams or whatever. When it comes down to it,
- 21:49Speaker 2: he's the guy we want up at the plate. He's
- 21:51Speaker 2: the guy we want behind center because we trust him.
- 21:54Speaker 2: We know he's gonna come through because he does it,
- 21:57Speaker 2: He's shown it. He leads by exams. Like Michael Jordan.
- 22:01Speaker 2: I'm not sure that he was always in his teammate's face,
- 22:05Speaker 2: but like I bet every teammate wanted in his hands
- 22:09Speaker 2: in funch time, he was like he just wouldn't allow
- 22:14Speaker 2: the team to lose. Of course they didn't always come through, but.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Like the more modern Michael Jordan would be like Lebron
- 22:20Speaker 3: or Steph Curry, who are gamers there are, right, But I.
- 22:25Speaker 9: Don't know Lebron than Steph Curry. I think Steph Curry
- 22:28Speaker 9: would cut your heart out exactly. I'm not sure Lebron would,
- 22:31Speaker 9: but but I don't.
- 22:32Speaker 3: I think again, like I don't think that Lebron or
- 22:35Speaker 3: Steph Curry either one of those guys is very demonstrative.
- 22:39Speaker 2: No, but they do it by their play, right.
- 22:41Speaker 5: Which is what I'm saying, Like, if you play well,
- 22:43Speaker 5: then every.
- 22:43Speaker 7: Obviously, that's all that really matters to me. Like I don't,
- 22:46Speaker 7: I don't care, Like I'm never I've never once tried
- 22:48Speaker 7: to make the argument that Drake needs to be that guy.
- 22:51Speaker 7: I just need to feel confident in you that you're
- 22:53Speaker 7: gonna you're gonna start to play well even if you've
- 22:55Speaker 7: had a crappy start to the first you know.
- 22:57Speaker 1: And that's why.
- 22:57Speaker 2: But every one of those people that were talking about
- 23:02Speaker 2: that do it by their play. They do it, they
- 23:04Speaker 2: show by example. I'll bet you they're the cold blooded killers,
- 23:07Speaker 2: every one of them, every one of them.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Yeah, But I don't need that cold blooded killer to
- 23:12Speaker 3: go marching up and down and start screaming at people.
- 23:15Speaker 2: You don't have to, but they have to be cold
- 23:16Speaker 2: blooded killers.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Yeah, but I don't. Yeah, I guess, I don't know.
- 23:20Speaker 3: We've only had one playoff run with Drake Mays and.
- 23:23Speaker 6: I said, he's still young, we's got a lot to
- 23:25Speaker 6: learn and all that.
- 23:25Speaker 3: It doesn't quite have that that mamba mentality.
- 23:29Speaker 5: As people say that Kobe Bryant, well, he may not
- 23:31Speaker 5: be great.
- 23:32Speaker 9: Then like I don't think Kobe's probably as good as Lebron. Yeah,
- 23:35Speaker 9: but I would say Kobe one hundred times out of
- 23:37Speaker 9: one hundred.
- 23:38Speaker 5: That's fair.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I think you don't have to have both. But I
- 23:41Speaker 2: think having the ability is number one, and having that
- 23:45Speaker 2: cold blooded mentality is what makes you great.
- 23:49Speaker 6: It's what separates the great one.
- 23:51Speaker 7: We just asks so much of a kid who's you know,
- 23:53Speaker 7: in Drake's case, was twenty two to twenty one years
- 23:56Speaker 7: old coming out of North Carolina to come into an
- 23:58Speaker 7: NFL team to lead them to you know, to be
- 24:01Speaker 7: that guy and not everybody special that way that they're
- 24:04Speaker 7: gonna come in and theyre instantly have that mojo. So,
- 24:06Speaker 7: you know, my hope is that I don't need the
- 24:08Speaker 7: rot ros stuff from Drake. I've never asked from that.
- 24:10Speaker 7: I just need to see him to continue to play
- 24:13Speaker 7: well when things aren't going well, when he's not playing
- 24:14Speaker 7: well in the first half, and you know, just having
- 24:16Speaker 7: that feeling like Bill's fans have right now, where Josh
- 24:20Speaker 7: is gonna make some place for us, Like I don't know,
- 24:21Speaker 7: if the defense are you know, we're gonna be able
- 24:23Speaker 7: to get it done. But you always have confidence when
- 24:25Speaker 7: you have one of those quarterbacks that at some point
- 24:27Speaker 7: they're gonna start to make plays and put some pressure
- 24:29Speaker 7: on Seattle. And for a brief glimpse, you know, maybe
- 24:32Speaker 7: it was the last about forty seconds and that Super
- 24:34Speaker 7: Bowl after you through the touchdown and they got the
- 24:36Speaker 7: ball back, and you know, for a moment there you felt,
- 24:38Speaker 7: all right, this is at least to bounce back a
- 24:40Speaker 7: little bit from Drake to you know. And again at
- 24:42Speaker 7: that point, he's probably just like, screw it, I'm gonna
- 24:45Speaker 7: let it rip, you know, so, but to me see
- 24:47Speaker 7: him make some of those throws down that gave me
- 24:49Speaker 7: a little bit of confidence.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Jack and arbis as an example of a great player
- 24:52Speaker 2: who didn't have fire in his belly to win his
- 24:54Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers.
- 24:57Speaker 3: Agree, maybe, yeah, I don't know, it's not hard to read.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I like, like Nikolay Jokic, like could not get out
- 25:05Speaker 3: of America fast enough when the NBA season is over.
- 25:08Speaker 3: I don't think he actually cared about anything, and he's
- 25:10Speaker 3: the best player in the.
- 25:11Speaker 9: League at Yeah, yeah, he actually laughed.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I couldn't believe it.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Yeah, he the guy like they won the Nuggets won
- 25:19Speaker 3: the title a couple of years ago, and he said,
- 25:21Speaker 3: can I go home like that?
- 25:22Speaker 5: That that you know like it? Just I don't. I
- 25:25Speaker 5: don't know if that. I think that a lot like Paul.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Was kind of saying, a lot of those types of guys,
- 25:32Speaker 3: it doesn't exist like it used to anymore, for better
- 25:34Speaker 3: or worse.
- 25:35Speaker 9: I do wonder if it's changing because of you know,
- 25:38Speaker 9: I just think that these kids are way different than
- 25:41Speaker 9: than like Fred and I were.
- 25:42Speaker 8: You guys are different. You know, you're not so much Mike.
- 25:45Speaker 8: I know you like to think himself as young, but
- 25:46Speaker 8: you're not.
- 25:47Speaker 5: See.
- 25:48Speaker 2: I think I don't think that part of it, that
- 25:52Speaker 2: cold blooded I hate to lose type of mentality has changed.
- 25:57Speaker 6: I think there are still.
- 26:00Speaker 3: A great I do think that like Drake may definitely
- 26:05Speaker 3: hates to lose a lot of there's been a lot
- 26:07Speaker 3: of stories about that, but him like hitting to lose
- 26:10Speaker 3: like ping pong like you know, and stuff like that.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Like No, I like, I just think it's different in
- 26:15Speaker 3: ways that they show it, like in ways that they
- 26:18Speaker 3: carry themselves, their body language, their their actions. I don't
- 26:21Speaker 3: I don't know if, like you know, Michael Jordan, you
- 26:24Speaker 3: brought him up like he he was famously an a hole,
- 26:27Speaker 3: like that guy would just go up to you in
- 26:29Speaker 3: practice and like the things that they did to like
- 26:31Speaker 3: Tony kukach Is like like ridiculous, Like they would go
- 26:34Speaker 3: up to him in practice and tell him that he
- 26:37Speaker 3: and everybody he ever known stinks, you know, like like
- 26:40Speaker 3: they he would just absolutely rip that guy's heart out.
- 26:42Speaker 3: I don't know if like everybody plays sports that way anymore,
- 26:47Speaker 3: for for again, for better or words. I'm not saying
- 26:49Speaker 3: it's a good thing or a bad thing, you know,
- 26:51Speaker 3: I just I don't know. I don't know if that's
- 26:53Speaker 3: the way it is anymore.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Anthony says, hey, old man yelling at clouds? Would you
- 26:58Speaker 2: say Marino falls into the dozen care enough? Not a
- 27:00Speaker 2: great leader, type of ultra talented player. I only saw
- 27:04Speaker 2: the end of his career, so not sure of what
- 27:06Speaker 2: he was like as a personality early on.
- 27:08Speaker 9: I see, I don't think so. I think he was
- 27:10Speaker 9: a really fiery competitive.
- 27:12Speaker 6: Well he was always yelling at other people, right.
- 27:16Speaker 9: No, absolutely, and that's like he wasn't doing that because
- 27:19Speaker 9: he didn't care, you know what I mean? Now you
- 27:22Speaker 9: can argue that he wasn't, you know, at his best
- 27:25Speaker 9: when he needed to be.
- 27:26Speaker 8: I mean, this another guy like Aaron.
- 27:28Speaker 9: I think he's the Aaron Rodgers of his time, like
- 27:31Speaker 9: too many home playoff losses and big you know, you know,
- 27:34Speaker 9: AFC Championship games in Miami and coming away with els.
- 27:39Speaker 9: But I mean, I would be hard pressed to find
- 27:43Speaker 9: a guy that I just openly said that guy doesn't
- 27:46Speaker 9: really seem like he cares if he would just not be.
- 27:48Speaker 7: Like to get to the NFL, Like you've got to
- 27:50Speaker 7: be hyper competitive just to get to the NFL.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Like you know, they're comparing.
- 27:54Speaker 9: Talents, Like I could look at certain guys and these
- 27:57Speaker 9: are good examples, Aaron Rodd. The last two we had
- 27:59Speaker 9: Aaron and Dan Marine, and they're great examples. I don't
- 28:02Speaker 9: know the answer to the questions, but you sometimes you
- 28:05Speaker 9: just look at guys and you're like, does it bother
- 28:10Speaker 9: justin Herbert as much when he loses as it bothers
- 28:12Speaker 9: a guy likes say Baker Mayfield. Now that might be
- 28:17Speaker 9: completely and utterly unfair, because one guy wears every emotion
- 28:21Speaker 9: that he's ever had on his sleeve, and the other
- 28:23Speaker 9: guy is as laid back as they come. It doesn't
- 28:25Speaker 9: mean that it matters more to Mayfield than it does
- 28:28Speaker 9: to Herbert. But that's the impression from Afar when you watch.
- 28:31Speaker 5: That's kind of my point.
- 28:32Speaker 2: It's superficial.
- 28:33Speaker 3: It is kind of trying to rebody language and get
- 28:36Speaker 3: inside guy's heads. And the end of the day, like
- 28:39Speaker 3: gotta play well, and like you gotta play well in
- 28:41Speaker 3: the biggest moments.
- 28:42Speaker 5: And he in the Super Bowl at least he didn't.
- 28:45Speaker 3: And so now there's this narrative that he doesn't care
- 28:48Speaker 3: enough for He's that you're not demonstrative enough, or he's
- 28:51Speaker 3: not a leader or a clutch or and that comes
- 28:54Speaker 3: with it, that comes with the territory.
- 28:56Speaker 6: You don't want to be sitting on the bench with
- 28:57Speaker 6: your head down anyway.
- 28:58Speaker 9: Well, and just before we go on, I just want
- 29:00Speaker 9: to reiterate that the league is better with Baker Mayfield.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Well, there's no doubt, but Ryan says, Drake mays every
- 29:06Speaker 2: bit of the competitive spirit of Tom Brady. Think back
- 29:09Speaker 2: to Brady in the AFC Championship Game versus the Steelers.
- 29:12Speaker 2: In the first Super Bowl run, he tweaked his ankle,
- 29:15Speaker 2: but to his own admission in the Dynasty document, was
- 29:19Speaker 2: kind of ready to take a seat. Drake is super young,
- 29:22Speaker 2: and his leadership style will grow organically as his confidence
- 29:25Speaker 2: grows and as he gets older. To Evan's point, there
- 29:29Speaker 2: is no singular leadership style of the greats. Bill Russell,
- 29:32Speaker 2: Joe Montana, and Bird all had more revered personalities relative
- 29:36Speaker 2: to a Jordan or a Brady.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I would.
- 29:41Speaker 8: Just Bird was tough to play with it too.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Oh yeah, even said in the in the Celtics documentary,
- 29:47Speaker 2: he goes, I practice harder than these guys.
- 29:50Speaker 6: That's why I wanted the ball.
- 29:51Speaker 8: I wanted to take the shop because I knew I
- 29:52Speaker 8: was more prepared.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:54Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, Bird was tough to play with. Bird
- 29:56Speaker 9: was more like Jordan than you think.
- 29:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Now, Bill Russell was a good example. He was a
- 30:02Speaker 2: lead by example guy, not in your face. Yeah. Montana,
- 30:06Speaker 2: maybe I don't know as much about him, but I
- 30:08Speaker 2: know that. But what in crunch time, he's the guy
- 30:12Speaker 2: I want the ball in his hand. Yeah, he's Joe cool,
- 30:16Speaker 2: you know, John Candy. Yeah, so it's good. It's good stuff.
- 30:20Speaker 9: I think it's a good discussion. It's probably bigger than
- 30:23Speaker 9: this show, but.
- 30:24Speaker 6: Yeah, nothing's bigger than this show.
- 30:25Speaker 2: Paul come on.
- 30:27Speaker 3: I mean, I just don't like how we try to
- 30:29Speaker 3: like put athletes in like a box, like this is
- 30:34Speaker 3: this way, you have to look this way, you have
- 30:36Speaker 3: to lead this way, you have to act this way when.
- 30:38Speaker 5: A lot of great players don't.
- 30:41Speaker 3: And no, I don't know if like Drake may is
- 30:44Speaker 3: going to rattle off six super Bowls. You know, he
- 30:47Speaker 3: might not have that kind of maniacal drive.
- 30:49Speaker 5: I don't know. Maybe he does it, most people don't,
- 30:51Speaker 5: but like can he still be great?
- 30:53Speaker 2: And the question, well, the question is that I guess
- 30:56Speaker 2: the crux of my question is do you need the
- 30:59Speaker 2: maniacal drive to be among the greatest of the greats.
- 31:04Speaker 7: I would say I think there needs to be something special.
- 31:06Speaker 7: I think there has to be competitiveness.
- 31:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Patrick Mahomes comes in out of shape every single last season,
- 31:12Speaker 3: So like I like, if you're just if we're gonna
- 31:14Speaker 3: like go by, like what happens now? I don't know, Like,
- 31:17Speaker 3: no one's gonna win seven Super Bowls a right, like
- 31:20Speaker 3: that's that somebody someday?
- 31:22Speaker 8: Will someone's gonna do it?
- 31:23Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 31:23Speaker 5: Maybe I don't know.
- 31:24Speaker 3: I mean maybe, but like let's not hold it to
- 31:28Speaker 3: that standard, right, so like, you know, I don't know
- 31:31Speaker 3: if you can like Patrick mahomess won three right, and
- 31:35Speaker 3: I don't think that Patrick Mahomes has the same Like
- 31:37Speaker 3: he's not on some TB twelve diet where he doesn't
- 31:40Speaker 3: eat a sugar for.
- 31:42Speaker 9: At this stage of Mahomes' career, neither was Brady. Brady
- 31:45Speaker 9: was chucking beers with the lineman at this stage.
- 31:47Speaker 5: Of yeah, they were water a lot of the time.
- 31:49Speaker 3: But yeah, I like I I just that's my point though,
- 31:52Speaker 3: is like I don't know, like I think Patrick Mahomes
- 31:56Speaker 3: is probably wired in a different way than a lot
- 31:58Speaker 3: of people from a competitive speed or the standpoint is
- 32:02Speaker 3: his drive to win in games and things like that,
- 32:04Speaker 3: I'm sure is off the charts.
- 32:06Speaker 5: But you can't ignore that guy.
- 32:08Speaker 3: But I don't look at him and be like that
- 32:10Speaker 3: guy all he does twelve months out of the year
- 32:12Speaker 3: is train and focus on football. Like I don't think
- 32:15Speaker 3: that that's true, which is fine, Like I'm not knocking
- 32:18Speaker 3: him for it, but I just don't think that that's true.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Okay, I mean some guys like him have. I would
- 32:24Speaker 2: say he has more pure talent than Tom Brady, which
- 32:29Speaker 2: is pretty amazing because Tom Brady's pretty damn talent.
- 32:33Speaker 7: To Paul's point, is missing the playoffs this year and
- 32:35Speaker 7: feeling like they're gonna have to reset a little bit,
- 32:37Speaker 7: does that maybe inspire him to change his regime a
- 32:40Speaker 7: little bit?
- 32:41Speaker 5: Yeah, career.
- 32:43Speaker 2: You know, there was a point in Brady's career about
- 32:46Speaker 2: now ye where Brady realized, if I'm going to keep
- 32:49Speaker 2: this up, I need to do something in order to
- 32:53Speaker 2: you know, extend my career.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I felt like his body was starting to break down
- 32:57Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 32:58Speaker 7: Remember six he started wearing that thing, and then you know,
- 33:00Speaker 7: Guerrero came in and that was what he needed.
- 33:03Speaker 1: But I mean, I agree with what There's no one
- 33:05Speaker 1: way to do it.
- 33:06Speaker 7: It's just I think there's a certain vibe that you
- 33:08Speaker 7: get from guys and a certain point, guys like Josh
- 33:10Speaker 7: Allen Mahomes, regardless of what we see them do during
- 33:13Speaker 7: the off season, you know that they're going to be
- 33:14Speaker 7: a nightmare just for sixteen minutes.
- 33:16Speaker 2: And I don't think it's just sports. I just find like,
- 33:18Speaker 2: whether it's business or whatever, science, you know, inventors, entrepreneurs,
- 33:25Speaker 2: like the top echelon guys and women have that's something
- 33:31Speaker 2: that's different there.
- 33:34Speaker 6: They might be.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Crazy, I crazy nuts or whatever, but there's something that
- 33:39Speaker 2: puts them above.
- 33:41Speaker 3: I think Drake May is maniacally competitive. I think that
- 33:45Speaker 3: that comes from his brothers and being the youngest and
- 33:47Speaker 3: getting beat down a lot as a as a kid,
- 33:50Speaker 3: and things like that.
- 33:50Speaker 5: By his brothers.
- 33:53Speaker 3: You know, like there's been a lot of stories on
- 33:55Speaker 3: the beat of you know, cards, ping pong, golf, basketball,
- 34:01Speaker 3: like just playing pick up basketball, and he's like trying to,
- 34:05Speaker 3: you know, tear somebody's head off, right like things like that,
- 34:08Speaker 3: And I think he he has that element. I just
- 34:11Speaker 3: don't know if he is like a demonstrative wear your
- 34:15Speaker 3: heart on your sleeve barking at people. And maybe like
- 34:20Speaker 3: that will happen eight to ten years from now, in
- 34:22Speaker 3: the second chapter of his career, when he becomes a
- 34:25Speaker 3: little bit more you know, older, more mature, more sure
- 34:28Speaker 3: of himself, that sort of thing. I think it's hard
- 34:31Speaker 3: to do that as a as a twenty three year old.
- 34:33Speaker 2: So el Elf from Wisconsin once again has completely misunderstood
- 34:37Speaker 2: what I'm saying. He says, just because someone isn't screaming
- 34:40Speaker 2: at their team doesn't mean they don't care.
- 34:42Speaker 6: I agree with that, but if you're the leader of
- 34:45Speaker 6: the team.
- 34:45Speaker 2: If you're the quarterback and your head's down and totally
- 34:48Speaker 2: within yourself in the toughest of times, that's not helping
- 34:52Speaker 2: the team.
- 34:53Speaker 9: Yeah, and can we also just add I don't think
- 34:55Speaker 9: anybody suggested that he.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Didn't care right now, I'm not saying I didn't care.
- 34:59Speaker 2: So once again, el got it all wrong.
- 35:01Speaker 6: He does that.
- 35:02Speaker 1: He does that a lot.
- 35:03Speaker 8: But that's a little aggressive, I think.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Also, I know, but he does that a lot. It's
- 35:07Speaker 2: a big time. Listen, No, I don't of course he cares.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Of course he cares. But you're my quarterback. I need
- 35:14Speaker 2: I need you to be the the guy that others
- 35:18Speaker 2: are looking to.
- 35:19Speaker 6: And if you're looking.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Down, I think it was like what's going on? Five?
- 35:23Speaker 7: Six Brady was The body language is a huge thing
- 35:26Speaker 7: with Brady. I think it was six where it was.
- 35:28Speaker 7: That was like a notable talking point of that his
- 35:31Speaker 7: body languages.
- 35:32Speaker 1: That's right.
- 35:33Speaker 9: I spent half the season pouting, right, Yes, they got
- 35:35Speaker 9: rid of all right.
- 35:37Speaker 5: Did the same thing in nineteen.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, I'm just saying what happened.
- 35:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, they made the playoffs and they're the
- 35:43Speaker 3: worst twelve and fourteen of all time. But I think
- 35:47Speaker 3: that the good thing about the Rabel Drake made tandem
- 35:51Speaker 3: is that Rabel is this alpha kind of personality and
- 35:54Speaker 3: leader that we're talking about, and maybe he can either
- 35:58Speaker 3: get it out of Drake May, if that's really what
- 36:00Speaker 3: you need, or maybe he can kind of supplement like
- 36:03Speaker 3: Brady supplemented Belichick, who wasn't necessarily you know, the leader
- 36:07Speaker 3: of men that you know, Mike Rabel is, but was
- 36:11Speaker 3: a genius when it came to the you know, the
- 36:12Speaker 3: football aspects of it. So I think that they're you know,
- 36:15Speaker 3: they hopefully will kind of combine forces here and you know,
- 36:21Speaker 3: be able to get that out of everybody. But the
- 36:23Speaker 3: guy that everybody looks to when things are not going
- 36:25Speaker 3: well might be the head coach. Like that might just
- 36:27Speaker 3: be the type of team that they are and the
- 36:29Speaker 3: way they're wired.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Joe says, all year long, May would pick up his
- 36:33Speaker 2: team when they started slow, So please don't judge his
- 36:36Speaker 2: whole year by one game. Yeah it's fair.
- 36:38Speaker 6: Yeah fair.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Now, I just say, I don't know.
- 36:42Speaker 7: I was wondering how you guys felt after other Super
- 36:45Speaker 7: Bowl losses, but this loss left me much more excited
- 36:50Speaker 7: and ready to get right back into it than other losses.
- 36:53Speaker 7: Now that all those other losses were you know, mid
- 36:56Speaker 7: Brady mid dynasty, where you knew that each team.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Was pretty but like it still just feels like you're
- 37:02Speaker 1: just getting started.
- 37:02Speaker 7: And that's why, Yeah, you took some you know, lumps
- 37:05Speaker 7: last week with people talking about the team, But how
- 37:08Speaker 7: can you not be excited about this team and the
- 37:10Speaker 7: direction that they're going. And I know that they have
- 37:11Speaker 7: holes and things to figure out, but the job that
- 37:14Speaker 7: they did last year just gives me a lot of confidence.
- 37:16Speaker 7: And to see Drake and how he progresses with all
- 37:18Speaker 7: these He's got all the tools in the world. We're
- 37:20Speaker 7: able saying all the right things to him, and I
- 37:22Speaker 7: you know, and I hope this isn't coming off as
- 37:24Speaker 7: us like nitpicking Drake, Like, yeah, there's things that he needs,
- 37:26Speaker 7: but he's still a young kid. I still don't think
- 37:28Speaker 7: there's really many other quarterbacks I'd rather have in the
- 37:30Speaker 7: league than him. And just overall, coming out of this season,
- 37:33Speaker 7: I'm enthusiastic about the whole operation.
- 37:36Speaker 6: That's our quarterback. That's our quarterback, our quarterback.
- 37:38Speaker 7: The other one, though, too always think about, the one
- 37:40Speaker 7: people use is that they don't believe in us, Like
- 37:42Speaker 7: I've known people who that's their thing. Like, no matter
- 37:45Speaker 7: how much success they have, it's always about how no
- 37:47Speaker 7: one believes in them. They're never like, dude, you've directed
- 37:49Speaker 7: movies and you're still selling me this thing about nobody
- 37:51Speaker 7: believes in you. But that's just I think certain people
- 37:54Speaker 7: have certain devices that they use, like Rodney Harrison, that
- 37:57Speaker 7: you know, nobody believes and that's.
- 37:58Speaker 1: How they get themselves to that place.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Yep, all right, A five to five PATS five hundred
- 38:03Speaker 2: is the hotline podcast at Patriots dot com is the
- 38:05Speaker 2: email address. We've already read a few of those emails.
- 38:08Speaker 2: Let's get to the phones. We'll start with Danny in Tampa.
- 38:12Speaker 2: What's up, Danny.
- 38:15Speaker 12: Here are you guys doing today?
- 38:16Speaker 4: Okay, hey, first take I want to give. I want
- 38:22Speaker 4: to pick a bone with with Paul to give. But
- 38:29Speaker 4: I did not say last week.
- 38:30Speaker 13: I think somebody was talking about the offensive line was
- 38:32Speaker 13: saying that we wanted to either remake.
- 38:35Speaker 4: The whole line.
- 38:37Speaker 13: And then also to the other point, I did not
- 38:39Speaker 13: say that it was my money.
- 38:41Speaker 4: It was Robert Krafts money.
- 38:43Speaker 12: I don't have a problem.
- 38:43Speaker 13: Paying paying Christians als.
- 38:45Speaker 4: I'm just saying.
- 38:46Speaker 13: That they probably should do a Kyler Murray type of
- 38:49Speaker 13: deal where they kind of word some things in the
- 38:51Speaker 13: contract where he needs to kind of meet deliver to
- 38:54Speaker 13: certain expectations.
- 38:55Speaker 4: If he wants to bag.
- 38:56Speaker 8: The other thing is, well, then you're not going to
- 38:58Speaker 8: sign him, Mike.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you're either going to.
- 39:02Speaker 9: Give him money guaranteed or not. That's up to you.
- 39:05Speaker 9: But I don't remember someone. I don't remember who, but
- 39:08Speaker 9: someone last Tuesday said they wanted to change the whole
- 39:10Speaker 9: offensive line. If that wasn't you, I don't think I
- 39:13Speaker 9: assigned that to you. But someone called in and said
- 39:16Speaker 9: they wanted to change all five guys in the offensive line.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Yeah, no, that's ridiculous.
- 39:20Speaker 13: And I also have a caller on crime to the
- 39:23Speaker 13: guy that called in was ticking on eld.
- 39:26Speaker 4: And Christian in La.
- 39:28Speaker 12: I think he needs to call in.
- 39:29Speaker 13: Don't sit behind the keyboard and be a keyboard warrior.
- 39:32Speaker 2: There you go, There you go, Danny, bring it, Danny, there.
- 39:36Speaker 5: You go, keyboard warriors.
- 39:38Speaker 1: All right, PU fight Club.
- 39:41Speaker 2: We'll just do like I don't mind people writing it,
- 39:43Speaker 2: but give your real name and where you're from. No
- 39:47Speaker 2: anonymous names. If you if you've got to criticize others,
- 39:49Speaker 2: and if I hear what Danny said.
- 39:51Speaker 9: If I assigned that to Danny, then then I'm wrong.
- 39:54Speaker 9: I don't remember assigning it to anybody in particular, but
- 39:56Speaker 9: somebody last Tuesday wanted to change the entire of the
- 40:00Speaker 9: offensive line.
- 40:01Speaker 7: I was like, you know, they just did that me
- 40:03Speaker 7: and that than we're talking about, like, here's my simple
- 40:05Speaker 7: seventy two point plan to fix the Patriots this offseason
- 40:07Speaker 7: where you're like cutting, restructuring, signing, cutting, resigning, like.
- 40:11Speaker 9: And I don't really know why Gonzo would be in
- 40:13Speaker 9: a Kyler Marty category, where like, is it is this.
- 40:16Speaker 2: Like prove it?
- 40:18Speaker 8: Well, what does he prove it?
- 40:19Speaker 2: Like?
- 40:19Speaker 8: Does he not watch film?
- 40:20Speaker 9: Like like he.
- 40:22Speaker 8: Had to put the video games away? Right, Yeah, if
- 40:25Speaker 8: you don't want to sign him, if.
- 40:26Speaker 3: That's if you want divisions Like I have never heard
- 40:29Speaker 3: anything even remotely like that about Christian Zalees. So I've actually, uh,
- 40:35Speaker 3: justin Hamilton, their cornerbacks coach, that he's one of the
- 40:37Speaker 3: smartest players he's ever had. You know, a guy that
- 40:39Speaker 3: just has ridiculous memory of like they put something on
- 40:43Speaker 3: the board and he's going to remember it, you know,
- 40:45Speaker 3: and it's just stuck in his brain. I don't think
- 40:47Speaker 3: that he's anything work ethic.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Is it any sort of question Nate's and Connecticut, we
- 40:52Speaker 2: can hear.
- 40:52Speaker 14: You, Okay, all right, good, good, good good. So Tyreek
- 40:58Speaker 14: Hill getting released is obviously any big in the NFL.
- 41:02Speaker 14: And with the situation that Stefan Diggs is currently in
- 41:06Speaker 14: with all the legal issue and then also us having
- 41:10Speaker 14: the ability to off that out of the contract, do.
- 41:12Speaker 12: You guys think that it's like a noble.
- 41:15Speaker 14: Possible decision that he's come to the team.
- 41:18Speaker 2: No, I'm good one thing that I can.
- 41:21Speaker 6: I don't think.
- 41:21Speaker 2: I don't think they're going to get into the Tyreek Hill.
- 41:24Speaker 8: No, I don't want any part of that.
- 41:26Speaker 1: No.
- 41:26Speaker 3: I don't know why we keep on glossing over the
- 41:28Speaker 3: fact that the last time we saw him he has
- 41:30Speaker 3: suffered a gruesome knee injury that like no one has,
- 41:33Speaker 3: like we're all should we try to sign Trek? Is
- 41:35Speaker 3: Tyrek Hill going to even play in twenty twenty six
- 41:37Speaker 3: because that was a brutal injury And.
- 41:41Speaker 9: Even if he plays, you're talking about similar off field
- 41:44Speaker 9: I mean worse, worse, but similar kinds of in terms
- 41:49Speaker 9: of severity, much more frequent with Tyreek Hill than with
- 41:52Speaker 9: Stefan Diggs. Evan talked about the injury situation, so he's
- 41:58Speaker 9: also getting a little bit older. Yeah, I mean I
- 42:01Speaker 9: I would just keep Diggs if you're going to do.
- 42:04Speaker 8: I think he's that whole thing.
- 42:05Speaker 3: I mean, he's four months removed from that injury. I
- 42:08Speaker 3: think I saw it as at least another six to
- 42:11Speaker 3: go until he's healthy. So like you're talking about adding
- 42:14Speaker 3: him mid season anyways, to whichever team signs him. On top,
- 42:18Speaker 3: you know, on top of all the stuff that Paul's
- 42:20Speaker 3: talking about.
- 42:21Speaker 6: What about Bradley Chubb because they got rid of him
- 42:23Speaker 6: too injuries.
- 42:25Speaker 5: He did not look like the same player to me.
- 42:28Speaker 3: You had that big injury in twenty twenty three, missed
- 42:30Speaker 3: the entire twenty twenty four season, and last year I
- 42:33Speaker 3: didn't think he looked quite the same. Now, if that's
- 42:35Speaker 3: like a consolation, because you kind of strike out on
- 42:38Speaker 3: your first couple of choices.
- 42:40Speaker 8: Like someone better than that.
- 42:41Speaker 9: But I wouldn't mind him as a as a depth guy.
- 42:44Speaker 2: If he's like your situational.
- 42:46Speaker 5: Guy, or if like that's like plan C, D E F.
- 42:51Speaker 9: Like you know, like I've always liked Bradley Chubb. I
- 42:53Speaker 9: agree with everything you haven't just said about him. But
- 42:56Speaker 9: I you look at what they had this year. I
- 42:59Speaker 9: wouldn't mind him like in that Chase On role, but
- 43:03Speaker 9: you need someone over that. Like we all thought Chase
- 43:05Speaker 9: On is gonna be a situational passacch who turned out
- 43:07Speaker 9: to be pretty much an every down player. I don't
- 43:10Speaker 9: want Bradley Chubb playing every down.
- 43:12Speaker 7: No, they got to figure out that position. I mean,
- 43:13Speaker 7: I'd love to add a free agent. I'd like to
- 43:16Speaker 7: draft a rookie in the first two days, you know,
- 43:18Speaker 7: redo that whole thing, get some young legs, some reliability,
- 43:23Speaker 7: might have to take a half step back.
- 43:25Speaker 1: I'm curious with Chase On.
- 43:26Speaker 7: I mean, I think he's gonna have interest, and I
- 43:28Speaker 7: think he might take the most money.
- 43:31Speaker 3: Edges from everywhere. Like there's free agent edges, there's Cosby
- 43:37Speaker 3: who is candidate.
- 43:38Speaker 1: There, give me him please.
- 43:40Speaker 3: You know, probably about fifteen guys in the draft that
- 43:42Speaker 3: are going to go on the top one hundred. I
- 43:44Speaker 3: mean it is the edge Mucket market is very robust.
- 43:47Speaker 3: But the question like does that end up hurting some
- 43:49Speaker 3: of guy?
- 43:50Speaker 7: So it's just gonna ask yeah, Like like somebody's gonna say,
- 43:52Speaker 7: why am I gonna pay Chase chase On right now?
- 43:54Speaker 1: When I got You know.
- 43:55Speaker 9: When you have a draft class like this, it kind
- 43:57Speaker 9: of hurts the free agents because what would you rather have?
- 43:59Speaker 3: It's and it's a good free agency last too. I
- 44:01Speaker 3: mean there's there's guys like Chase on a kind of mafe,
- 44:06Speaker 3: you know. There there's a lot of guys that are
- 44:09Speaker 3: going to kind of be part of this march.

- 46:53Speaker 17: Past podcast, where we travel down memory lane with the
- 46:55Speaker 17: former Patriot great and who better to join us today
- 46:58Speaker 17: than number thirty two CJ. Craig James, one of the
- 47:03Speaker 17: og member of the Pony Express, right along with Eric Dickerson.
- 47:06Speaker 18: Absolutely, which we're going to.
- 47:07Speaker 17: Talk about because how can you talk to Craig James
- 47:10Speaker 17: without talking about that before his Patriots career.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Anything that gets me back to high school. Matt.
- 47:14Speaker 18: That's great, right, thanks for joining us.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Man.
- 47:16Speaker 6: This has gone a privilege.
- 47:17Speaker 2: You know, I walk in this.
- 47:18Speaker 10: Stadium and I'm cracking up because I'm back in the eighties, right,
- 47:22Speaker 10: And when I walked up to Sullivan Stadium, you know,
- 47:24Speaker 10: we didn't have no film room like this, right, wasn't even.
- 47:27Speaker 2: The thought back then.
- 47:28Speaker 18: Right.
- 47:28Speaker 17: But Craig, you said you were here last June. Explain that.
- 47:31Speaker 17: Why were you here for Tom Brady Day?
- 47:34Speaker 10: Well, I got to get the invitation to come in
- 47:36Speaker 10: for the Brady celebration, which was just remarkable. But I
- 47:39Speaker 10: wanted to see Dante Scarnekia because Scar and I we
- 47:42Speaker 10: were back together at SMU. He was here when I
- 47:44Speaker 10: was playing for the Patriots. He was, you know, like
- 47:46Speaker 10: a legend. He's been here since before Billy Sullivan bought
- 47:49Speaker 10: the team.
- 47:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 47:50Speaker 10: Scar's just one of those legendary guys. And I got
- 47:53Speaker 10: a chance to speak with him and see him. But
- 47:54Speaker 10: what a great night that was. I was so proud
- 47:57Speaker 10: to be an alum. What a privilege to be a
- 47:59Speaker 10: part of the Patriots organization. I sent a handwritten note
- 48:02Speaker 10: to mister Kraft and just said, man, what an awesome
- 48:05Speaker 10: night and a display of the fans. The fans here
- 48:08Speaker 10: in New England showed off last year absolutely lutely.
- 48:11Speaker 9: We were really happy with the way that whole night
- 48:13Speaker 9: because a lot of people in the organization had a
- 48:15Speaker 9: lot of things, a lot, you know, a lot to
- 48:17Speaker 9: do with that. So we felt like that was a
- 48:19Speaker 9: really strong night for the entire organization and I'm glad
- 48:23Speaker 9: that so many you know, alums came back for that.
- 48:25Speaker 9: There was a lot of people from a lot of
- 48:27Speaker 9: different eras that took part in that, and I think
- 48:30Speaker 9: it was a huge success.
- 48:31Speaker 10: Well well, you know, it's it's like I had a
- 48:32Speaker 10: chance to see Tony Collins and Doug Flute and a
- 48:35Speaker 10: bunch of my teammates that I had not seen in years.
- 48:37Speaker 10: You know, you have to walk up nowadays, forty years
- 48:39Speaker 10: later and say, hey, Craig James, see who are you?
- 48:43Speaker 17: And I tell you what, Craig, I'm not like you
- 48:46Speaker 17: don't look a little bit different. You look like Craig James.
- 48:49Speaker 17: Maybe so maybe your hair's a little lighter, but that's
- 48:52Speaker 17: about it. I was joking with you before we started
- 48:54Speaker 17: that Eric could give you ten or fifteen steps.
- 48:57Speaker 18: I wonder if there's a half back option play that
- 48:59Speaker 18: you don't know, maybe one that you could do if
- 49:01Speaker 18: you know, pitch it out there.
- 49:02Speaker 17: I think it could probably still get a first down
- 49:04Speaker 17: off of that kind of shit.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Thank you very much. I'd be really good with pregame
- 49:09Speaker 2: warm up and pat go.
- 49:10Speaker 10: If somebody hit me, I would cry, that's funny, Like
- 49:15Speaker 10: I said, to kick things off.
- 49:17Speaker 17: I think people here in New England are somewhat versed
- 49:21Speaker 17: on the legend of how it began. But the idea
- 49:24Speaker 17: that two kids who went to high school in Texas
- 49:28Speaker 17: to the best at their position could be recruited and
- 49:31Speaker 17: play for the same college and be so prolific. I mean,
- 49:36Speaker 17: that story never gets old, doesn't. The Pony Express at SMU.
- 49:39Speaker 10: With you and Eric Dickerson, We've been nearly fifty years friends,
- 49:42Speaker 10: we love each other, We're like brothers. And the fact
- 49:45Speaker 10: that now we can look back on it and realize
- 49:48Speaker 10: what we did was really unique. And someone asked me
- 49:51Speaker 10: the media made a big deal about it. I had
- 49:53Speaker 10: won the vincelent Bardi NFL Offensive Player of the Year
- 49:56Speaker 10: the year after Eric had been the NFL MVP, and
- 49:59Speaker 10: they said, how to two guys go to the same
- 50:01Speaker 10: team in Dallas at SMU, How did that happen?
- 50:04Speaker 1: I said, well, it was Dallas.
- 50:05Speaker 10: It was Ron Meyer, head coach at the time, a
- 50:07Speaker 10: lot of energy, but it just, you know, as Eric
- 50:10Speaker 10: and I say the Pony Express, we were better together.
- 50:13Speaker 9: So did you ever have any trepidation, you know, being
- 50:16Speaker 9: a running back, there's only one guy that's going to
- 50:18Speaker 9: get the carry.
- 50:19Speaker 2: I'm sure that both you and.
- 50:20Speaker 9: Eric felt like you were the man coming out of
- 50:23Speaker 9: high school. Was there any concerns that you were going
- 50:26Speaker 9: to be able to share the backfield together and be
- 50:28Speaker 9: as successful as you were?
- 50:29Speaker 10: He had rushed for over two thousand yards as a senior.
- 50:31Speaker 10: We were different classifications in Texas. Both of our teams
- 50:34Speaker 10: had one state championships, so we both thought we were
- 50:37Speaker 10: pretty good. We're both all Americans, we get to SMU.
- 50:39Speaker 10: Ron Meyer made it work, you know. He convinced us
- 50:42Speaker 10: that you guys are going to be fresher for your
- 50:44Speaker 10: twenty carries each per game.
- 50:46Speaker 2: I think he averaged twenty, averaged.
- 50:48Speaker 10: Nineteen, and so now that we look back on it,
- 50:52Speaker 10: it really helped. Eric says it tremendously that it helped
- 50:55Speaker 10: him prolong his career. He wouldn't beat up when he
- 50:57Speaker 10: got there, so he was able to play longer, and so, yeah,
- 51:01Speaker 10: we could have been selfish, but we also recognized that
- 51:04Speaker 10: in the third and fourth quarter defenses were worn out.
- 51:08Speaker 10: And Eric and I say to each other on the sideline, Hey,
- 51:10Speaker 10: they're dragon, they're tired. We got him and you just
- 51:13Speaker 10: couldn't keep up with both of us. It's kind of weird, though,
- 51:15Speaker 10: isn't it.
- 51:15Speaker 17: I mean, like to your poke, Yeah, there's not too
- 51:17Speaker 17: many people who are the guy who are going and
- 51:21Speaker 17: some going to be the guy, and I the can
- 51:22Speaker 17: subjugate the ego, would say, I think it might be
- 51:24Speaker 17: better for the team, for our careers and everything physically.
- 51:28Speaker 18: Like that to split this.
- 51:29Speaker 10: We were friends. Had we not been friends, it would
- 51:32Speaker 10: have never worked. There, you go, It's truly. I mean,
- 51:34Speaker 10: we have never had one cross word with each other,
- 51:36Speaker 10: no bad thought, even to this day. And so other
- 51:40Speaker 10: than when he beats me really bad in golf, he's
- 51:42Speaker 10: a great golfer.
- 51:44Speaker 9: So the thing that I like about this is it
- 51:46Speaker 9: sort of starts in the reason why the Pony Express
- 51:49Speaker 9: is obviously a really interesting story for a lot of
- 51:51Speaker 9: reasons and a lot of people, but for the Patriots specifically,
- 51:55Speaker 9: Ron Meyer is there and he ends up coming to
- 51:57Speaker 9: New England, and we talked about a little bit like
- 52:01Speaker 9: it's like kind of like that first chapter of the
- 52:05Speaker 9: story for the Patriots, like Ron Meyer, what did he
- 52:07Speaker 9: mean to you, you know at SMU and then when
- 52:10Speaker 9: he when he ends up coming here and you eventually
- 52:13Speaker 9: come as well.
- 52:13Speaker 10: Ron Meyer was not an EXS and I xCE and
- 52:16Speaker 10: O guy. I mean, he knew he knew football, but
- 52:18Speaker 10: he was a talent guy, and he knew he knew
- 52:21Speaker 10: great assistant coaches, and he had a staff that was phenomenal.
- 52:24Speaker 10: Steve said, well, Dante Garnekia, there was a whole all
- 52:27Speaker 10: of them were world class coaches, assistant coaches, and he
- 52:31Speaker 10: made them make sure we knew what we were doing
- 52:33Speaker 10: as athletes. And he knew an athlete, and so he
- 52:35Speaker 10: knew what you could or could not do, and he'd
- 52:37Speaker 10: put you in position to have success. And so Ron
- 52:41Speaker 10: really had a you know, Unfortunately, him getting fired, you know,
- 52:44Speaker 10: led to Raymond Berry, which was a blessing for the organization.
- 52:48Speaker 10: But Ron got it started, you know, with the assistant
- 52:51Speaker 10: coaches that he brought in here, like Dante Scarnekia, who's
- 52:54Speaker 10: in the.
- 52:54Speaker 17: Team Hall of Fame, who's had an unbelievable career, Craig
- 52:58Speaker 17: could did you see some of that? Did you as
- 53:00Speaker 17: a kid who's played at college, did you see this
- 53:04Speaker 17: world class coaching staff? And then specifically what did Scar
- 53:06Speaker 17: help meet you for the two years that you and
- 53:08Speaker 17: Dante were together at SMU.
- 53:11Speaker 10: I don't think as a young athlete that you appreciate
- 53:13Speaker 10: what the coach is doing until that's not happening, and
- 53:17Speaker 10: then especially when you get down the road and you
- 53:19Speaker 10: can look back and reflect and say, well, why don't
- 53:21Speaker 10: we doing this? Nothing against the system when I came
- 53:23Speaker 10: in here as a rookie, but we had a really
- 53:26Speaker 10: hard time.
- 53:27Speaker 18: Very complicated pass protection scheme.
- 53:29Speaker 10: I've got sam, I've got strong safety, I've got that,
- 53:32Speaker 10: But if then I've got that, when you get a
- 53:34Speaker 10: football player thinking you've got problems.
- 53:36Speaker 2: You got sacks.
- 53:37Speaker 10: And so Scar cleaned that up. He just said, look,
- 53:40Speaker 10: let's let's simplify this thing. Let's make sure we know
- 53:42Speaker 10: who we're going to block. If you can't do that,
- 53:45Speaker 10: then you can't be successful. So as I look back
- 53:48Speaker 10: on it now, the assistant coaches that Ron Meyer had
- 53:51Speaker 10: and that Raymond Berry had, that Belichick had, every one
- 53:54Speaker 10: of them had a job and a role and a responsibility.
- 53:57Speaker 10: They were really good at it. You got to have
- 53:59Speaker 10: Jimmy's to have the Joe's, but you got to have
- 54:01Speaker 10: the coaches.
- 54:02Speaker 9: So when you came out of SMU and decided to,
- 54:06Speaker 9: you know, to get into the draft, it was USFL first.
- 54:10Speaker 2: I think it was the Washington Federals. Yep. What was
- 54:13Speaker 2: behind that decision to go that zero.
- 54:16Speaker 10: I had been told by my agent that this USFL
- 54:19Speaker 10: was going to have a draft. A few days after
- 54:21Speaker 10: we played in the Cotton Bowl, I'd gone home to Houston.
- 54:24Speaker 10: I get a phone call from my agent. He says, Hey,
- 54:26Speaker 10: they select you the fourth player taken in the USFL draft. Wow, okay,
- 54:31Speaker 10: he said, we have to go to Washington out of respect.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Let's go.
- 54:34Speaker 2: Let's go up out of respect.
- 54:35Speaker 10: Within moments of being around this ownership group in Washington,
- 54:38Speaker 10: I realized they were very serious about what they were doing,
- 54:42Speaker 10: and it was it was significantly more money than I
- 54:45Speaker 10: would have been sloughed. I knew it was going to
- 54:46Speaker 10: be a first rounder in the NFL, or was projected
- 54:48Speaker 10: to be. But I was like, I like the idea
- 54:51Speaker 10: of pioneering, you know.
- 54:53Speaker 1: It was.
- 54:53Speaker 18: It was a great spirit.
- 54:54Speaker 10: There was a ton of great football players obviously absolutely
- 54:56Speaker 10: went to the USF. Yeah, I'm glad that happened because
- 55:01Speaker 10: it led me to playing for New England had I
- 55:04Speaker 10: not played there where Ron then they started taking USFL
- 55:07Speaker 10: players in the seventh round so that they would have
- 55:10Speaker 10: the rights for US if that league boobs. Yeah, and
- 55:14Speaker 10: to thank God that I was able to get away
- 55:16Speaker 10: from there and to play for the New England Patriots.
- 55:19Speaker 10: So it was a blessing and now great moments in.
- 55:25Speaker 2: History. Good lobster bisk is sex is like sex for
- 55:29Speaker 2: your throat.
- 55:29Speaker 6: I do remember saying that. I do remember saying.
- 55:32Speaker 2: That I don't.
- 55:35Speaker 8: But that's even funnier.
- 55:36Speaker 6: Than is like sex for your throat.
- 55:40Speaker 8: Plus I was Dan, Yeah, don't.
- 55:42Speaker 2: I wouldn't doubt Dan. If you're looking for a good
- 55:45Speaker 2: lobster bisc on the Cape, the Daniel Webster in Sandwich
- 55:49Speaker 2: has an excellent.
- 55:50Speaker 19: Okay lobster bisc You have the place down the cape.
- 55:55Speaker 19: Oh yeah for everything. Well, if you haven't noticed, they
- 55:58Speaker 19: eat out a lot because I don't cook. But my
- 56:02Speaker 19: wife doesn't really particularly enjoy it either, so we eat
- 56:06Speaker 19: out a lot.
- 56:07Speaker 8: But yeah, my wife and I eat out a lot too.
- 56:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I I I enjoy the whole thing about eating out.
- 56:14Speaker 2: I do you know, I like to sitting down, getting
- 56:18Speaker 2: a drink, placing the water.
- 56:20Speaker 9: I just like, you know what I really like when
- 56:23Speaker 9: I'm like a like a Saturday night, especially in the summer,
- 56:26Speaker 9: if it's nice out, you get to a place on
- 56:28Speaker 9: the water and your table's not ready, and you go
- 56:32Speaker 9: to the bar and have you know, maybe a couple
- 56:34Speaker 9: of drinks while you're waiting for your table. Yeah, And
- 56:36Speaker 9: that that to me is like, see, I don't cut
- 56:39Speaker 9: this a couple offs.
- 56:40Speaker 2: I don't like that for.
- 56:41Speaker 6: Me, I don't like it.
- 56:42Speaker 2: I don't like having to be in a place where
- 56:44Speaker 2: I know I'm going to have to move as soon
- 56:46Speaker 2: as they call my name. I like to just be
- 56:48Speaker 2: where I'm going to be and settle in. You fat,
- 56:52Speaker 2: that's not about lazy.
- 56:53Speaker 5: I don't want to move.
- 56:54Speaker 17: That's another great moment from all.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Right back here and page It's unfiltered A five to five.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Pats five hundred is the hotline podcast at Patriots dot
- 57:05Speaker 2: com is the email address talking about a bunch of stuff,
- 57:09Speaker 2: leadership and free agents, and as I said before the break,
- 57:13Speaker 2: Paul has an extensive.
- 57:15Speaker 8: List there are a lot of it.
- 57:16Speaker 2: Of all the free agents we started talking about edge rushers,
- 57:20Speaker 2: now you have them in alphabetical order, not by ability. Well,
- 57:25Speaker 2: we don't care about whose whose name begins with A.
- 57:28Speaker 2: We want to know who.
- 57:29Speaker 9: I have them ranked by position too. But there's there's
- 57:34Speaker 9: a lot of veterans on. You know, the big names
- 57:36Speaker 9: are veterans, So those aren't veterans on your own time,
- 57:39Speaker 9: like the Joey Bosa's and the Kyle van Nois of
- 57:42Speaker 9: the world. No one's really interested in those guys, you know.
- 57:44Speaker 9: Aj Epanessa kind of been a disappointment in Buffalo, Joe Tryon,
- 57:49Speaker 9: Trey Hendrickson, big name on the list, obviously. Evan talked
- 57:53Speaker 9: about a few a few other guys that that could
- 57:57Speaker 9: be of interest. One of them as Kingsley nig if
- 58:02Speaker 9: I'm pronouncing, I think it's right.
- 58:04Speaker 3: Yep, Arnold Gay, I don't think he's he's here. Yeah,
- 58:13Speaker 3: he's there, He's he was Penn Stake guy. Uh, yeah,
- 58:18Speaker 3: he's he's a good player. I'd be interested in him.
- 58:20Speaker 3: He's kind of like their type, you know, hard charging
- 58:23Speaker 3: edge rusher, gets up the field, like you know, has
- 58:26Speaker 3: a good speed off the ball and not not a
- 58:29Speaker 3: He's more of a you know, situational pass rusher for
- 58:32Speaker 3: a lot of teams, but not a type of guy
- 58:34Speaker 3: that you're going to get to, like set the edge
- 58:36Speaker 3: and stop the run.
- 58:37Speaker 5: You want him to get up the field.
- 58:38Speaker 9: There's a few other names here that I you know,
- 58:42Speaker 9: kind of been disappointments, but high draft it, like Quitty Pay.
- 58:45Speaker 9: You know, I'm thinking of guys that are kind of
- 58:47Speaker 9: still young and they're available, probably because they haven't necessarily
- 58:53Speaker 9: been home runs for their team. Oda Fame Olway who
- 58:56Speaker 9: got traded from Baltimore to the Chargers last year.
- 59:00Speaker 8: You know, those guys are somewhat intriguing to me.
- 59:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:07Speaker 9: Like I said, there's a ton of a ton of
- 59:09Speaker 9: veterans on this list too that I wouldn't be necessarily interested.
- 59:13Speaker 9: You know, Jayden Phillips, Jalen Phillips in Philadelphia went to
- 59:16Speaker 9: Miami to Philly. Another guy fifty year five years in
- 59:20Speaker 9: in Evans, guy boy A Mafe, another young guy.
- 59:25Speaker 2: So there's a lot of names.
- 59:26Speaker 3: Like Boyfe to me, be Day, I'm going to butcher
- 59:30Speaker 3: his name all off season. Those guys are like coming
- 59:33Speaker 3: off their rookie contracts.
- 59:34Speaker 2: Yeah, A Dalyss Thomas.
- 59:36Speaker 3: Yeah, so they're like twenty six ish, you know, like
- 59:39Speaker 3: they're right off their very sweet contract. They're not talking
- 59:43Speaker 3: about signing like Joey Bosa, for example, who's in his
- 59:46Speaker 3: thirties already. We're talking about guys that are hopefully kind
- 59:49Speaker 3: of like Chason, you know, a guy that that may
- 59:51Speaker 3: be a sending and might have his best football still.
- 59:54Speaker 2: So a guy that's not on the list because he's
- 59:56Speaker 2: not a free agent but he's been in trade talks
- 59:59Speaker 2: is of course. Uh Max Crosby Yeah, and uh, you know,
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Albert Breer reported and he's not the only one. I
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: guess he sat down with Raiders and they had a,
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: you know, a good talk. But Albert Breer says he
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: thinks he's more liable to believe than ever. I disagree.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: I think he's more liable to stay than ever with
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: the Raiders.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: How many more times is he going to go through
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: a Raiders rebuild? Like this has got to be his
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: third or fourth coach? I mean, McDaniel's Pete Carroll, Quinn
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: kubi act. There's got to be at least one more
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: before that, right, Antonio Pierce. Antonio Pierce, and there's another
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: one before.
- 1:00:36Speaker 9: That yeah, the filling guy, the guy that the guy
- 1:00:40Speaker 9: that Antonio Piers replaced.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: Though, is that it was that?
- 1:00:44Speaker 9: I think he was just an interesting Yeah, I'm talking
- 1:00:45Speaker 9: about like but yes, they went to the playoffs.
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: With Derek Carr.
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: Earlier on in Derek Carr's career. But I mean, like
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: how many more regime Chan.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: Played.
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: Yeah, Like, I just think at some point, you.
- 1:01:00Speaker 7: Know, now is the time to sell him to you
- 1:01:01Speaker 7: still get high high pick for him. I feel like,
- 1:01:04Speaker 7: you know, a couple of years from now, he's going
- 1:01:05Speaker 7: to start be on the backside, right.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: Max and Mike and Groveland said, would your guys prefer
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: Trey Hendrickson over trading assets for Max Crosby.
- 1:01:14Speaker 7: No, I would trade assets John Gruden, John Gruden and
- 1:01:21Speaker 7: Jack del Rio.
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: I think played for Jack del Rio for like a year.
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: It's like five coaches easily for Max Crosby.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Yeah, change the scenery. It's time.
- 1:01:30Speaker 7: Sick of Vegas. I don't know I take him though.
- 1:01:34Speaker 7: I think it's the kind of movie you gotta make.
- 1:01:35Speaker 7: You got to make at least one or two of those.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: Everyone's you know points to when Rabel coached him in
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: the Pro Bowl. They got to know each other and uh,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: Max Crosby was saying, you know, he was a real
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: good dude, And.
- 1:01:48Speaker 7: I mean the fit is obvious across the board of
- 1:01:51Speaker 7: you know, on the field, off the field, and that's
- 1:01:53Speaker 7: what you got to do this offseason. You got to
- 1:01:55Speaker 7: make this team better on paper. I know that doesn't
- 1:01:57Speaker 7: always count for what you think it's going to count for,
- 1:02:00Speaker 7: but I think you have to come out of this
- 1:02:01Speaker 7: free agency period feeling like they got a couple dudes
- 1:02:04Speaker 7: on the team.
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: I think you just have to figure out like if
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: is that because that's going to be your big swing,
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: Like if you go out and trade a first round
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: pack for Max Crosby, that's your splash, that's your move.
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: And making that on defense when the offense just couldn't
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: move the ball the entire playoff run, Really, like is
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: that really where the big.
- 1:02:21Speaker 6: What do you think his market will be?
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Because right now we have the thirty first pick in
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: the first round, Right are there other teams with higher
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: first round picks? Who a would be willing to give
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: up that pick and be looking for somebody like Max Crosby,
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: Like who's our competition?
- 1:02:37Speaker 9: So, according to Breer, he indicated that virtually the entire
- 1:02:43Speaker 9: league is over real, has looked in.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: I mean, I'm sure you know, yeah, looked into it.
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: A player of that caliber, everybody's going to be interested.
- 1:02:51Speaker 7: I mean, yeah, I want him for Buffalo Singers and
- 1:02:53Speaker 7: I want him for here. But I think both their
- 1:02:55Speaker 7: edges are out. With Bosa's up and the other guy
- 1:02:59Speaker 7: you mentioned that they drafted out their other edge, I
- 1:03:00Speaker 7: mean they need yeah.
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I just like I said, like, if
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: you're really thinking about it, what were the reasons why
- 1:03:08Speaker 3: they they didn't finish the job and win the Super Bowl?
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: It wasn't pass rush, it was offense offense.
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: And so if that is not only the big swing
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: you're doing by trading thirty one, but you're also paying
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: him top dollar at the top of the market, does
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: that help Drake may put up points.
- 1:03:27Speaker 9: Yeah, And I'm glad you mentioned that because I think
- 1:03:28Speaker 9: last week I had mentioned that he had I think
- 1:03:32Speaker 9: a thirty million I think he's on the books for
- 1:03:35Speaker 9: thirty million base salary, and I thought he had one
- 1:03:38Speaker 9: more year of guaranteed. But I think I'm wrong on that.
- 1:03:42Speaker 9: I think I had the year mixed up. I saw
- 1:03:44Speaker 9: something over the weekend in ESPN that the guaranteed money
- 1:03:48Speaker 9: is through, So it is you know, the chance that
- 1:03:51Speaker 9: you could make that trade and maybe rework something, you know,
- 1:03:55Speaker 9: to to lower the cap number, But it's gonna I
- 1:03:58Speaker 9: don't think you're gonna lower the that you're paying him.
- 1:04:01Speaker 8: I'm just talking about the cap number.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I think you bring up a good point.
- 1:04:04Speaker 7: And it's what I've been thinking about a lot, is
- 1:04:05Speaker 7: what is the most direct route and easiest route to
- 1:04:09Speaker 7: upgrade for Drake?
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: You know? Do you do?
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: You do?
- 1:04:12Speaker 7: You say, if we just protect this kid, you know
- 1:04:14Speaker 7: we're gonna be okay. Maybe we don't have to at
- 1:04:16Speaker 7: this point make the huge swing on a thirty something
- 1:04:19Speaker 7: year old receiver to give him that number one? Do
- 1:04:22Speaker 7: you focus on the offensive liner? You know, I've been saying,
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: look at tight end two? You know, is there a
- 1:04:26Speaker 7: developmental way to find a player who can become a
- 1:04:29Speaker 7: significant weapon for Drake May and that second tight ends.
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: But I think when you.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Look at tight end wide receivers an offensive line, you
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: have to say we could use upgrades everywhere. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: how can you not?
- 1:04:39Speaker 9: And I don't want a thirty something guy, but I
- 1:04:42Speaker 9: want an upgraded receiver.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just how who you know, it's just so hard.
- 1:04:46Speaker 7: It's like it's great to say it would be great
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: to get jamar Ches, but you know, like this is
- 1:04:49Speaker 7: what this five.
- 1:04:49Speaker 9: But I think you can upgrade with different guys that
- 1:04:52Speaker 9: don't necessarily have to be at that caliber. And I
- 1:04:55Speaker 9: think you need to keep keep drafting. Yeah, and I
- 1:04:58Speaker 9: think you need to keep taking your swings and see
- 1:05:00Speaker 9: if you can find somebody like everybody else seems to
- 1:05:03Speaker 9: find that really hits in those day two per So in.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: McDaniel's scheme, is it worth sacrificing maybe a little bit
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: of top end talent with high end smarts football IQ
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: in the wide receiver position.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:05:22Speaker 8: I mean I need I need Mike's dudes.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: We need players. Yeah, you need guys with talent.
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: I think a bigger question is is what kind of
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: receiver are you looking for? Are you looking to replace
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: Stefan Diggs ones and like, are you looking for a
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: guy that can play a little bit probably more on
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: the inside and run routes inside the middle of the field,
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: or you're looking for a guy that's going to take
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: the top off, or you're looking for, you know, Denzel
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: Boston in the draft, just a big body, you know,
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: X receiver that's going to catch everything thrown his way. Like,
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: what exactly are you looking for in terms of type?
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: Is that mcdaniels's call is that Drake May's skill set
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: and trying to fit it to Drake May's skill set?
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: Can we start with someone who gets open consistently and
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: catches the ball and then figure it out later? Well,
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: but I think, I mean, do we have to like
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: fit in a guy?
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: So the only way that that works though, it's like
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: if you start to get into that, you're talking about
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: proven commodities like trading for aj Brown, which like no
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: one's going to sit here and say no to and
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: no one's going to be confused as to where he's
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: going to play and all that.
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: Like, you get Aj Brown, you figure it out.
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: But when you start to talk about the draft and
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: you start talking about drafting a guy thirty one, like
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: the type of receiver and the system fit and all
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: that kind of stuff matters because the talent isn't going
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: to be off the charts. It's not Jamar Chase that
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: you know, in the top five of the draft, So
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: you have to start to think about you know, how
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: does this player fit into the puzzle? You know, I
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: think there's two different guys right at the back end
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: of the first round that are vastly different types of
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: skill sets. In Boston in case he's a conceptsy home
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: from A and M Like, those are two very different
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: types of players. So are you looking for like the
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: separator the explosive receiver because that's more Casey concepts on?
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: Are you looking for a bigger, better.
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: Kind of version of Mac Collins and that's more Denzel
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: Boston And you kind of have to figure out which
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: one is the type that you want to fit it.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Yes, eldredge Eldred is in North Carolina? What's up, Eldrid
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: explosive receiver? We get him in now?
- 1:07:20Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 1:07:20Speaker 20: Yeah, Hey, well, I mean, uh, last week I didn't
- 1:07:26Speaker 20: hear what you was talking about, but I did, uh
- 1:07:28Speaker 20: went back and played the thing. Thanks Danny for the
- 1:07:31Speaker 20: shout out, Nick and Pocono. You bout the dumb as
- 1:07:34Speaker 20: the box of rocks. It ain't got no coming since
- 1:07:36Speaker 20: God give a great Okay, I love it when it
- 1:07:39Speaker 20: comes to wide receivers, bring your ass on the wide
- 1:07:44Speaker 20: receivers I talk about they just don't run straight line
- 1:07:47Speaker 20: they run all the routes. And I've been saying that
- 1:07:50Speaker 20: this two nineteen really for fifteen years, when we even
- 1:07:53Speaker 20: we had Brady. You need somebody outside, like but they
- 1:07:56Speaker 20: were saying explosives, catch and separate, that's all they want.
- 1:08:00Speaker 12: Can do that.
- 1:08:01Speaker 20: But like I said, if you used to Jiff Tim
- 1:08:04Speaker 20: Bank listening to everybody instead of doing your own homework,
- 1:08:07Speaker 20: keep yours on the sideline they go. Because I do
- 1:08:10Speaker 20: watch college football, and I do watch Get the Scout
- 1:08:13Speaker 20: Repard and if you're smart enough google it draft class,
- 1:08:18Speaker 20: you need to tell you about all the robb receives,
- 1:08:20Speaker 20: the weakness in they strip. And that's all I gotta say.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: All right, love it, Eldred.
- 1:08:24Speaker 6: That's about as fired up as I've seen.
- 1:08:26Speaker 9: Eldred loves his wide receivers. Oh yeah, don't don't come
- 1:08:30Speaker 9: to him with wide receiver talk if you're not prepared.
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: The kid from Tennessee is talented.
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: They they run a really bizarre college style offense where
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: every all the receivers are like outside receivers have these
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: max splits where they're way outside the numbers, like almost
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: on the sideline.
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: They all run like.
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: Three routes like so it's like really hardy. Yeah to
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: like now, this kid, I think is maybe a little
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: bit better than that. They also run like routes purposely
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: where they're not running full speed and they're like to
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: do that. So like you watch the tape and you're like,
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: why is this guy dogging this route? And it's actually
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: like what he's being told to do. It's just a
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: bizarre offense and it's kind of hard to do.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: If I was an offensive coordinator, I would never have
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: my receiver lineup next to the sideline.
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: Oh yeah, like they are literally hugging.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: I would never do that. Like you've now told me
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: you can only go one way, you know, like why would.
- 1:09:22Speaker 6: You do that?
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: Because they just spread the field.
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: That's so style of offense that they run. But it's
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: very effective at the college game, but the translation from
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: the college to the pros is next to nothing. Like
- 1:09:33Speaker 3: there's no you're really looking at traits of like is
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: he big as he fast can catch the ball?
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: I think that's one of the toughest jobs for these
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: scouts is the you know, figuring out the projection of
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: the wide receivers to the pro game.
- 1:09:47Speaker 7: They screwed up all the it's so hard the professional
- 1:09:49Speaker 7: screw it up as much as we do.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: That's what's fascinating.
- 1:09:52Speaker 7: But you know, have you said something about like puzzle
- 1:09:55Speaker 7: pieces and to me, it's like, and we touched on
- 1:09:56Speaker 7: this last week.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: It's but it's like, how do you pull up.
- 1:09:58Speaker 7: Some of these puzzle pieces that you are already have
- 1:10:00Speaker 7: down on the board because basically the second tight end
- 1:10:03Speaker 7: position is open. Otherwise, I mean, everybody else is under contract.
- 1:10:07Speaker 7: You can bring back the same offense essentially if you
- 1:10:09Speaker 7: want to.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: How do you not do that?
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: You know?
- 1:10:11Speaker 7: How do you you like Keishamboudi? You like Pop Douglas?
- 1:10:16Speaker 7: Do you love them?
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: It's just it's some hard work.
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: Can you do better?
- 1:10:20Speaker 7: And and and is it we're just going to bring
- 1:10:22Speaker 7: some guys in and we're going to compete. Or if
- 1:10:24Speaker 7: you do Paul sing or it's purposeful and you get
- 1:10:26Speaker 7: a number one and it's clear that this guy is
- 1:10:28Speaker 7: going to play, you know, does that open up to
- 1:10:31Speaker 7: a trade or you know, I just it's it's hard
- 1:10:33Speaker 7: to navigate how they how.
- 1:10:35Speaker 9: They I've been starting to like kind of talk myself
- 1:10:38Speaker 9: into the idea of like a guy like Galled Pierce, And.
- 1:10:40Speaker 8: To Evan's point, like.
- 1:10:42Speaker 9: And I'm not saying that Alec Pearce is like would
- 1:10:44Speaker 9: be a number one on every team in the league.
- 1:10:46Speaker 9: He probably isn't. He could know, but I think his
- 1:10:49Speaker 9: skill set matches. Drake says, yep, but this is a
- 1:10:52Speaker 9: guy that would play on the outside here. So maybe
- 1:10:55Speaker 9: then if you lost Diggs and you had you know,
- 1:10:57Speaker 9: Pierce isn't replacing Digs, right, so you have to take
- 1:11:00Speaker 9: mac Collins and use him as.
- 1:11:03Speaker 8: Sort of your slap duye.
- 1:11:05Speaker 9: You know, more full time who is probably better in
- 1:11:08Speaker 9: the run game and can do some different things. And
- 1:11:11Speaker 9: Josh talks about that stuff all the time with how
- 1:11:14Speaker 9: Mac Collins fills a lot of chess piece as a
- 1:11:17Speaker 9: chess piece. So I mean kind of talking myself, but
- 1:11:19Speaker 9: that's not going to be easy to do. He's going
- 1:11:21Speaker 9: to be, you know, a sought after guy, and he's
- 1:11:24Speaker 9: going to require a good salary.
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: He's going to hit them open market. He might and
- 1:11:27Speaker 5: he might not. He might not. I would be shocked
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: if the Colts don't do something.
- 1:11:31Speaker 9: They went they went to Great Lance, it was last
- 1:11:35Speaker 9: year or two years ago with Michael Pittman, and they
- 1:11:37Speaker 9: made sure that they held on to him so they
- 1:11:39Speaker 9: could do the same thing with Peers.
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I just don't want to hear anymore, Oh he
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: ran the wrong route. Oh he didn't come back for
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: the ball. Oh you know he cut this route short.
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: I don't want to hear that anymore.
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: It happens with everything I know, but I want to
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: limit that. Yeah, but I mean it's just like, you know,
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: why does Drake may miss the throw?
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: Like everything I'd rather have that then the receiver runs
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: the wrong way.
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: I know, But I'm just saying, like every team, like
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: like the receivers aren't going to run perfect routes every
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: single time, so there's always going to be nitpicks about
- 1:12:09Speaker 3: routes and did he stem it right? Did he break
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: at the right angle? Did he run it at the
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: right depth? Like these are all the details that get
- 1:12:18Speaker 3: really lost.
- 1:12:18Speaker 7: And like along those lines, like to further complicate your point, Paul,
- 1:12:21Speaker 7: is do you save some space for a guy like
- 1:12:24Speaker 7: Kyle Williams to improve and maybe have a chance to
- 1:12:26Speaker 7: play that role, or you know, do you get Alec Pearson.
- 1:12:29Speaker 7: Then all of a sudden, it's like, you know, we
- 1:12:30Speaker 7: don't really need Kyle Williams on the outside, you know
- 1:12:32Speaker 7: what I mean, that's that's the interesting juggling kind of
- 1:12:35Speaker 7: thing you gotta do.
- 1:12:35Speaker 9: You know when people always say, like, I don't know
- 1:12:37Speaker 9: why you guys talk about this stuff. You don't have
- 1:12:39Speaker 9: all the information. Yeah, no, we don't. Like that's information
- 1:12:42Speaker 9: that the coaching staff has right now. They have a
- 1:12:45Speaker 9: better idea of what Kyle Williams is and what it
- 1:12:48Speaker 9: might be in twenty six than we do for sure.
- 1:12:52Speaker 9: But yeah, if they project him and they say, you
- 1:12:55Speaker 9: know this guy, this guy was coming on. He it
- 1:12:57Speaker 9: took him a little while to understand everything. Once he did,
- 1:13:01Speaker 9: he was a better player. He didn't have a lot
- 1:13:02Speaker 9: of opportunities. But we think he's going to be this
- 1:13:06Speaker 9: in twenty six by all means.
- 1:13:07Speaker 7: Yeah, But again, if they have that kind of belief,
- 1:13:09Speaker 7: another balls leap of faith that you've got to make
- 1:13:12Speaker 7: on a number.
- 1:13:12Speaker 8: But you got to.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: Maybe you got to move on from some.
- 1:13:16Speaker 7: Of these guys that did play well for the last
- 1:13:18Speaker 7: year because you need to take a half step forward to.
- 1:13:20Speaker 9: I would be very surprised if they came with anything
- 1:13:22Speaker 9: close to status quo on offense.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: Yeah, me too.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: I mean the receivers that the two easiest ones are
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: the guys from the twenty three draft who are going
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: to be up at the end of next year, Like
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: they're on the last year of their rookie contract.
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: So like pop In Ksehanlu.
- 1:13:35Speaker 8: One of those guys isn't going to be here.
- 1:13:37Speaker 5: You know, you ask me, maybe they're Tray Kennedy.
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: I just I think that a big thing to me
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: is like they have to figure out how they also,
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: like what kind of offensive identity do they want to be?
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: Do they want to be We're going to put Drake
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: May in the shotgun and we're spreading the field and
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: we're going to be the Cincinnati Bengals, and it's going
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: to be great receivers on the outside with a great quarterback.
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: Do they want to be able to run the ball
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: a little bit more effectively than they did last year?
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: And you know that's going to mean you know, probably
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: getting a tight end that can block a little bit
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: better in line. You know, receivers that are a little
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: bit bigger and more physical, kind of like the Rams
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: forty nine ers types of receivers.
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: You know, those are all questions that you.
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: Know they have to answer that only they can answer
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: about like what kind of offense do they want to be?
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: You know, I think that matters a lot too in
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: terms of when you start to talk about the type
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: of receivers you're going to target.
- 1:14:23Speaker 7: Make you guys get that sense with Brady as you
- 1:14:24Speaker 7: were going along of like as three O four, that
- 1:14:29Speaker 7: he was having more input into what they were doing.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: Both well, I think those are played with Those were
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: the times where he was meeting weekly with Bill.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: I mean certainly not six right, I would say yes
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: and no.
- 1:14:40Speaker 9: I think he did have a say, and I think
- 1:14:42Speaker 9: a lot of times they said, yeah that that's great,
- 1:14:44Speaker 9: too great, but you can.
- 1:14:45Speaker 8: Do more with lesson you'll like it.
- 1:14:47Speaker 9: Until I finally bought them down and it cost them
- 1:14:49Speaker 9: a title, and then they went out and got everybody
- 1:14:51Speaker 9: right and O seven you know, I mean it was
- 1:14:53Speaker 9: they got they got a slot guy, they got a
- 1:14:55Speaker 9: dynamic outside guy, they got a backup dynamic outside guy.
- 1:14:59Speaker 8: They got a tight end.
- 1:15:00Speaker 9: Like the O seven fre Agency class was like.
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: Real play, you know, three receivers, a little spread in
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: the field and all that stuff. Like I know a
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: lot of people want them to go heavier and put
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: multiple tight ends on the field and receivers that can
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: block and try to be more like the Shanahan Tree
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: offenses where you're scripting runoff of pass and marrying those
- 1:15:24Speaker 3: things together. But you know that right now, I feel
- 1:15:27Speaker 3: like they kind of I don't know what exactly that
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: answer is to be you know, effective as of both
- 1:15:34Speaker 3: a run offense and a pass offense, because they got
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: very eleven like three receiver heavy, pass heavy, you know,
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: towards the end of the season, especially where a lot
- 1:15:43Speaker 3: of it was kind of on Drake May to kind
- 1:15:45Speaker 3: of make things happen, and I think they would probably
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: want to be a little bit more under center play action,
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: you know, that sort of thing than they were towards
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: the end.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Uh. Onto the phones. Uh, Todd's in North Carolina.
- 1:15:59Speaker 6: What's up?
- 1:15:59Speaker 9: Todd?
- 1:16:01Speaker 21: Hey, guys. Let me start by apologizing to Fred because
- 1:16:05Speaker 21: I sent in an email. I was pretty hot after
- 1:16:08Speaker 21: the Super Bowl and I was kind of grogey.
- 1:16:11Speaker 12: I'm still a little upset.
- 1:16:14Speaker 21: I thought maybe I was unjustified, which is why I
- 1:16:16Speaker 21: took some time off and didn't calling you guys. But
- 1:16:18Speaker 21: I've been listening to people. They didn't put Will and
- 1:16:21Speaker 21: Drake in positions to succeed, and then considering they're both injured,
- 1:16:25Speaker 21: they didn't do anything for them, and it was upsetting me.
- 1:16:29Speaker 21: It was like, why are you putting these guys in
- 1:16:30Speaker 21: there who definitely are our future one way or the
- 1:16:33Speaker 21: other and leaving them just hanging. And that's really what happened,
- 1:16:37Speaker 21: and it was very frustrating to just see the struggles
- 1:16:41Speaker 21: of those guys because that's our future. And now on
- 1:16:45Speaker 21: to the next point of the future. I was listening
- 1:16:49Speaker 21: to a lot of people and Chris Canty said, you know,
- 1:16:51Speaker 21: the one thing the Pats have to do is be careful.
- 1:16:53Speaker 21: Don't become Chicago. Don't think you just need one or
- 1:16:55Speaker 21: two players and you're there. Stick keep doing the drafting young,
- 1:17:00Speaker 21: find you know a way to keep your team growing,
- 1:17:03Speaker 21: kind of like the Rams do and some of these
- 1:17:05Speaker 21: other teams. Don't try to fill everything in free agency
- 1:17:08Speaker 21: and get these guys, build young and up because that
- 1:17:11Speaker 21: way you have a core and your team can flourish,
- 1:17:15Speaker 21: not just for one or two years, but can keep going.
- 1:17:17Speaker 21: So those are my two points.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: I'll let you guys discuss, all right, thinks I can
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: anyone disagree?
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: That's the universal truth.
- 1:17:23Speaker 9: Keeps didn't do that, would I would disagree with that.
- 1:17:26Speaker 9: I don't care how you build it, just well I
- 1:17:28Speaker 9: get good players.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: You need you need to draft?
- 1:17:31Speaker 9: Well yeah, well yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, everybody, just then
- 1:17:37Speaker 9: keep your draft picks so you can be good forever.
- 1:17:40Speaker 8: No, that's not really how it.
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: Works, especially when you're picking thirty one.
- 1:17:45Speaker 17: Five.
- 1:17:45Speaker 8: Like what did Chicago do?
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: I don't know their roster?
- 1:17:49Speaker 8: And is that bad?
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: No?
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: I mean they did like clos and Love is a
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: good player, but so is Luther Burton. Yeah, I think
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: that they. I'm kind of more unpulsized the street, like.
- 1:18:00Speaker 8: I just find good players.
- 1:18:02Speaker 3: I also just like hear a lot of how like
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: the roster is still like really far away, and I'm like,
- 1:18:08Speaker 3: I don't oh, I don't think.
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: No, I don't agree.
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: Wouldn't you have said that last year?
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: And then and then they went out and turned over
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: forty percent of the roster and had a whole new team, right,
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: And I think they already did that, like they we've
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: already done that chapter.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: But that means that they're not that far away.
- 1:18:22Speaker 9: Right, So yeah, I woul I would agree with that
- 1:18:26Speaker 9: they're not that far away. But I to Todd's point here,
- 1:18:29Speaker 9: So it's going to sound like I'm being hypocritical, But
- 1:18:32Speaker 9: where I agree with Todd is you did that last year.
- 1:18:36Speaker 9: Evan's right, they turned over almost half the roster. So
- 1:18:40Speaker 9: you can't expect that that's going to be good going
- 1:18:42Speaker 9: forward because those guys that you brought in are like
- 1:18:45Speaker 9: kind of in their prime, so they're going to be
- 1:18:48Speaker 9: heading to the backside. So you need to get some
- 1:18:51Speaker 9: younger guys. Like Brabel said, you need younger, cheaper, better alternatives.
- 1:18:56Speaker 9: But I don't just have to draft them, is what
- 1:18:58Speaker 9: I'm saying. You know, I rattled off a couple of
- 1:19:00Speaker 9: four and five year guys in the league that I
- 1:19:02Speaker 9: think would be good players. If you can replace a
- 1:19:04Speaker 9: Harold Landry with a younger version of Harold Landry, it
- 1:19:07Speaker 9: doesn't have to be a draft pick.
- 1:19:08Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, like that's just an example.
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: I just think it's really like and look, it happens,
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: and guys slip through the cracks all the time. But
- 1:19:14Speaker 3: like when you're picking thirty one and you're picking at
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: the end of every single round, so it's going to say,
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: it's really hard to sit here and say, what does
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: draft pro bowlers guys like?
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: You know, if you it's that easy.
- 1:19:23Speaker 9: People look at this draft and first let me just
- 1:19:26Speaker 9: stay for the record, I'm still sort of I do
- 1:19:29Speaker 9: what I always do in the draft, whether it's go
- 1:19:31Speaker 9: to a bad initially and I let it play out
- 1:19:33Speaker 9: a little bit before I just determine everything. But you
- 1:19:36Speaker 9: got a bunch of guys who played a lot this year,
- 1:19:39Speaker 9: you picked fourth, like to Evan's point, now you're picking
- 1:19:43Speaker 9: thirty first in every round. It gets a little harder
- 1:19:47Speaker 9: to like come up with eight guys that are going
- 1:19:50Speaker 9: to play a lot.
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: Draft all pros.
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: Well, just draft all pros.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: That's and that as I just want to think of it.
- 1:19:55Speaker 7: No, and then that's it's if you're willing to say
- 1:19:58Speaker 7: we're in a position to draft like potential right tackle
- 1:20:01Speaker 7: replacement or a potential defensive end replacement. You go in
- 1:20:05Speaker 7: with that attitude of we're now in the system where
- 1:20:07Speaker 7: we have a pretty good team, but we have to
- 1:20:08Speaker 7: keep stalking the shelves of the positions. To your point,
- 1:20:11Speaker 7: the free agents last year that you signed. If you
- 1:20:13Speaker 7: go into a thinking we're getting a starter at thirty one,
- 1:20:16Speaker 7: I don't, you know.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: You can't. That's why you need to supplement with the
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: free agency. You gotta find talent this year in free agency.
- 1:20:22Speaker 9: Right, and I think it's going to be hard to
- 1:20:24Speaker 9: do because I don't think they're going to be as
- 1:20:26Speaker 9: active and aggressive in free agency as they were last
- 1:20:29Speaker 9: year for obvious reasons. I mean, they spend a ton
- 1:20:32Speaker 9: of money, yep in free agency last year.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: But I just think that you just got to look
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: at it like now, like exactly how Raybel talked about
- 1:20:40Speaker 3: it on All Access last week of like they have
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: a foundation, like they've built the foundation of the house
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: and now they're refurbishing. They're finishing the base man addition, right,
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: that's what we're doing.
- 1:20:52Speaker 5: We're we're not.
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: Going into this to make wholesale changes to the team
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: where you know they have to turn over forty percent
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: of the roster. Again, you go out there, you you
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: you'd go and you shop for the appliances and you
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: you know, finish the basement and you do all the
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: hang the flat screens on the wall, and you know,
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: make it a home like you know, and that that's
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: what they're looking for now.
- 1:21:13Speaker 5: And I think in the draft, dudes nailed it.
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: Like those are supposed to be picks that are for
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: future two to three year projections. When you start talking
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: especially about days two and three, like maybe at thirty
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: one they could draft a player that's going to contribute
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: right away.
- 1:21:27Speaker 5: But on all likelihood, you're looking.
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: At a lot of guys that we're going to draft
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: a developmental tight end, We're going to draft a developmental
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: right tackle, We're going to draft, you know, a guy
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: on the offensive line that we think might be able
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: to play left guard, you know, or or tackle or whatever.
- 1:21:43Speaker 18: You like.
- 1:21:43Speaker 8: Those did it before he lost it?
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: Yeah, he was able to. I mean, you know, stay
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: ahead of the.
- 1:21:50Speaker 9: Two whatever, you know, like Bill was able to do
- 1:21:53Speaker 9: it there for a while in the in the yachts. Yeah,
- 1:21:56Speaker 9: then when you turned into the you know, the teams
- 1:21:58Speaker 9: like it did just didn't go with well.
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:22:00Speaker 7: That's the only exception I would say is that you
- 1:22:02Speaker 7: never know who's going to fall through the cracks at
- 1:22:04Speaker 7: thirty one. And there might be you know, it's a
- 1:22:06Speaker 7: great edge classes said, there might be a guy, but
- 1:22:09Speaker 7: my expectation for an edge guy at thirty one.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: But you're the third guy. You're the destiny of pass rusher.
- 1:22:13Speaker 7: You're going to bring some young juice on early downs,
- 1:22:15Speaker 7: kind of like what pondered did earlier this year. But
- 1:22:18Speaker 7: you know that that to me is what's interesting. Something
- 1:22:20Speaker 7: somebody falls the something that occurred to me.
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: You know, when you're drafting low in the first round,
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: and like you said, they hit on Mankins. They also
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: had Dante Scarnek as their offensive line coach.
- 1:22:34Speaker 6: So do you weigh that, say, where's my strength and coaching?
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and like, am I going to have more higher
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: percentage of succeeding with that draft pick knowing that I'm
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: putting him with my best coach And.
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: Hard to say. On the offensive side of the ball,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: I'd say right now, I mean I.
- 1:22:50Speaker 7: Feel good about the quarterback situation, but I mean, what
- 1:22:53Speaker 7: do we really know about these guys. I mean, Robert
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: Kugler left to to go tight ends for the coach,
- 1:22:58Speaker 7: tight ends for the Steelers.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: It's a good question.
- 1:23:00Speaker 7: I don't know on the offensive side of the ball,
- 1:23:02Speaker 7: what you would feel with Dante Scarnaki. I mean maybe
- 1:23:06Speaker 7: if Moron sticks around, you feel like that, But they
- 1:23:09Speaker 7: haven't earned that kind of like it'll be fine.
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: We got Doug Maroon to coach him up yet, I
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: mean maybe he is that.
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: I think you're more like optimistic about like they have
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: systems on both sides of the ball that they know
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: inside and out, and so like you can watch guys
- 1:23:21Speaker 3: now and prepare for the draft and say, this guy's
- 1:23:24Speaker 3: going to fit a role, this guy's going to fit
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: what we want them to do, which makes it so
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: much easier to kind of streamline it. Like I was
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: watching Paul was making fun of me for watching the
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: Toledo safety, But after I watched the Toledo safety, I
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: watched the kid from Oregon. It's a really good safety
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: as well, and that I was watching him, you know,
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: match routes and quarters and care you know, play the
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: post and blitz and stuff, you know, fit the run,
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: and I'm like, these are all things that Patriot's safeties do.
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: This is exactly what they asked Craig Woodson and Jalen
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: Hawkins to do every single week.
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: And that makes it so much easier.
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: And I think one of the reasons why, you know,
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: towards the end with Bill but also with the drid
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: Mao year, they didn't know what they wanted, Like, they
- 1:24:03Speaker 3: didn't know what kind of system they were trying to
- 1:24:05Speaker 3: fit it into. They didn't have a vision for like
- 1:24:08Speaker 3: this is a safety for Mike Rabel. This is a
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: defensive end for Mike Rabel. And now when you start
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: to watch these guys you can really get a feel
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: for that.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: I felt that way with Keldric Fauk.
- 1:24:16Speaker 7: That kid, I'm like everything you know, stand up a
- 1:24:19Speaker 7: little bit, he's hand down. I mean just everything you
- 1:24:22Speaker 7: saw those defensive ends this year. Do you can see
- 1:24:25Speaker 7: him do on his tape?
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: R Mason Thomas, He's a night just like screamer athletic
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: comes off the Edgewood, great first step, like exactly the
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: type you know, Chason Landry, like those types of players
- 1:24:37Speaker 3: six two two fifty like that. That's that's what they're
- 1:24:41Speaker 3: looking for now at that position, and I think that
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: helps a lot.
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: Yeah, Casius Howell, that's another one too. That guy just
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: I mean he's gonna be gone, but all right, never know.
- 1:24:49Speaker 6: Sabbah in North Carolina, bring it?
- 1:24:52Speaker 21: Uh?
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: Oh? Are we okay to Drake?
- 1:24:54Speaker 22: Hey, gentlemen, I'm gonna try to say calm today. I
- 1:24:57Speaker 22: just want to retract my Drake may may have had
- 1:25:01Speaker 22: irreparable damage comment. I liked that other collar.
- 1:25:04Speaker 10: Earlier.
- 1:25:04Speaker 22: I was a little bit losing my head. I was
- 1:25:07Speaker 22: so frustrated at how you guys didn't help Drake. But
- 1:25:11Speaker 22: I got a few things, if you'll bear with me.
- 1:25:13Speaker 22: Think about Patrick Mahomes got killed in the Super Bowl
- 1:25:16Speaker 22: against Tampa when he had an offensive line, they were injured,
- 1:25:19Speaker 22: and then got killed again against Philly. No one says
- 1:25:22Speaker 22: that that guy's bad. Jim Kelly got killed three times
- 1:25:25Speaker 22: once by my Redskins. John l We got killed twice
- 1:25:27Speaker 22: once by my Redskins. And then people are saying that
- 1:25:30Speaker 22: Drake May should never have gotten DP. It would have
- 1:25:32Speaker 22: been embarrassing. Is bad game he had? Well watch you
- 1:25:34Speaker 22: talk to Droe Theisman about that when he won the
- 1:25:37Speaker 22: MVP and got slaughtered against the Raiders, and he played
- 1:25:40Speaker 22: horrible that game. So an MBP is a regular season award.
- 1:25:44Speaker 22: So the next thing I want to say is, y'all
- 1:25:46Speaker 22: don't care about wide receiver. I don't care about defensive lineman.
- 1:25:49Speaker 22: I don't care about Max cra I'll want linemen as
- 1:25:52Speaker 22: they stayed in my big Frank Wee wedding. You know,
- 1:25:55Speaker 22: the man that would be Drake is the head, but
- 1:25:58Speaker 22: the wife the office of lineman of the neck, and
- 1:26:01Speaker 22: they make the head turn in when they want it.
- 1:26:05Speaker 22: So without the offensive line, Drake May is got going
- 1:26:09Speaker 22: to be anything. So we need to do something. So
- 1:26:11Speaker 22: looked up a couple of names free agencies Brian Brandon Smith,
- 1:26:16Speaker 22: Indianapolis six. He's twenty nine years old, came out of Auburn.
- 1:26:19Speaker 22: He's a free agent. And Jonah Williams he's out of Alabama.
- 1:26:24Speaker 22: He's a tackle and he is six foot five and
- 1:26:27Speaker 22: he's twenty eight years old. I want y'all falts on
- 1:26:29Speaker 22: that because we need to fix the line.
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: You notice how said we right, Yeah, we're on it together,
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: thanks Abo.
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: Jonah Williams had a series of injuries towards the end
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: of this chapter of his career that I have done that.
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: Brandon Smith's a good player, plays right tackle, short arm,
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: right tackle. Both both Colts tackles actually have short arms,
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: but he's he's a right tackle. I'm still I think
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: the best move for them to make in the off
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: season on the offensive line is a left guard. I
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: think I would invent and sign a veteran left guard
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: to come into play next to Campbell. Have Jared Wilson
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: and Garrett Bradberry duke it out for center.
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: Split those two guys up.
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: Give Campbell a kind of a security blanket next to him.
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: A guy that's been there, done that, you know. David
- 1:27:16Speaker 3: Edwards from Buffalo is one guy that I circle. You know,
- 1:27:20Speaker 3: as a free agent target. Joe Tooney got traded last offseasons,
- 1:27:23Speaker 3: so who knows what veteran guard might be available. But
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: you know, if you said a guy like Brandon Smith,
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: he's replacing Morgan Moses, which like you could do. I
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: just don't know if that's really fixing shuffling.
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: Ye get a little younger and.
- 1:27:37Speaker 9: One more tacko I want. Yeah, you guys, Rashid Walker
- 1:27:40Speaker 9: from Green Bay.
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: Yeah, he plays. He played on the left side for them.
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: You know, like maybe maybe he's another guy that you
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: could bring into play right. I don't know if he's
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: done it before. I don't believe so, But I'm looking
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: at the interior offensive line. I think it's a little
- 1:27:56Speaker 3: bit premature to start shaking up the tackles.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: I like it.
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: You know, if they can get a left guard that
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: seasoned veteran knows what he's doing.
- 1:28:05Speaker 7: You know, and they maybe give me a day two tackle,
- 1:28:08Speaker 7: you know, give me a right right tackle developmental, but
- 1:28:10Speaker 7: somebody you know that maybe Marcus Bryant develops. But somebody
- 1:28:14Speaker 7: in the pipeline that you feel good about, You feel
- 1:28:16Speaker 7: good about their size.
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: And you know that you can work with for a year.
- 1:28:19Speaker 5: Yeah, there's a.
- 1:28:19Speaker 3: Couple of guys at the back end of the first
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: round at tackle that could be interesting to them too.
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: Most of them play left. The kid from Clemson, it
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: was interesting he.
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: Plays right, Blake Miller.
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: Yeah, and he like started every game going back to
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: his freshman year and didn't opt out of the bowl game.
- 1:28:33Speaker 5: It's kind of one of those program type of guys.
- 1:28:36Speaker 8: Yeah. And what is it's eleven picks? Right?
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: So he had too many?
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: They have like seven?
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: They have four six round picks right now.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: Many?
- 1:28:43Speaker 9: Yeah, So I want they have two four, seven or
- 1:28:47Speaker 9: seven or three picks whatever it is.
- 1:28:50Speaker 8: I want half of those on offensive linemen.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Like well, because I mean like.
- 1:28:56Speaker 9: Just three, four or five guys and hopefully one or
- 1:28:59Speaker 9: two of them in two years are ready to play.
- 1:29:02Speaker 9: There's a lot of Day three offensive linemen starting in
- 1:29:05Speaker 9: the NFL. It's the one spot that you legitimately can
- 1:29:08Speaker 9: can draft and develop and they start and they're good starters.
- 1:29:11Speaker 7: And even for the long term plan. I mean when
- 1:29:13Speaker 7: you this will be his last year of his deal.
- 1:29:14Speaker 7: I mean I've seen some people suggesting the Patriot should
- 1:29:17Speaker 7: extend him and redo his deal. I don't know about that,
- 1:29:20Speaker 7: but you know, just in terms of planning for like,
- 1:29:22Speaker 7: I like to look at who are the free agents
- 1:29:24Speaker 7: next year? These are the guys you need to draft
- 1:29:25Speaker 7: this year to be ready to offset those losses.
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: Morgan, Moses, Michael one, you're going to be out.
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: I just like, if you want to make the argument
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: that you could get younger than Morgan Moses, that's fine.
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: I just don't look at this market and say you're
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: going to upgrade more than Moses.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: You're just going to kind of shuffle things, right.
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: So it's like, Okay, so it's a different name that
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: didn't lose the Super Bowl, so we like him better,
- 1:29:45Speaker 3: you know, And I don't know if he's actually any better.
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: Santo is a clinical PhD in clinical psychology, so I
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: want to read this email. He says. If there is
- 1:29:54Speaker 2: one word I hate in sports talk, it's confidence.
- 1:29:58Speaker 6: Confidence is a totally useless feeling. It's like a fair
- 1:30:01Speaker 6: weather friend.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: When things are going well, it shows up, but when
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: things are going south, it disappears. A better term should
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: be competence. That is not a feeling, but it's level
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: of skill. Can you throw the ball deep ball and
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: on target? Can you block well enough to keep the quarterback,
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: pocket clean? Can you catch the ball that is a
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: little behind you? All these questions can be answered because
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: they speak to measurable behaviors. Drake May is only twenty three.
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: From the perspective of a seventy one year old man. Here,
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: he's still a baby. Why should he be a leader
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: at this stage of his career just because he's the QB.
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: Leadership skills take time to grow and develop. Give it time.
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: I think when Fred talks about being a cold blooded killer,
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: he might mean set aside emotions and execute your skills mechanically.
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: If so, I agree, And by the way, that is
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: also a measurable skill, a psychological one that could be developed.
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: I know I've worked with Olympics athletes to develop this skill.
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: I've been a fan of the Patriots dating back to
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: when they were kicked out of Fenway Park. First game
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: I saw in real life was played at Harvard Stadium.
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: The Chargers killed them. Later the Jets with Joe Namath
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: destroyed them, and I later found out Joe was drunk
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: while doing it. He killed the Patriots and he was drunk.
- 1:31:15Speaker 8: Okay, I don't agree with a lot of that.
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: WHOA like it?
- 1:31:20Speaker 9: I mean, I have all the respect in the world
- 1:31:22Speaker 9: for someone who obviously is doing these things for a living.
- 1:31:25Speaker 8: But there's no such thing as confidence.
- 1:31:29Speaker 9: Like, if you're confident that you can make a play,
- 1:31:32Speaker 9: you don't think that increases your ability to make that
- 1:31:35Speaker 9: your chances to make that play.
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: I think what he's saying is your confidence comes from
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: your competence.
- 1:31:39Speaker 9: No, I know, but so these guys all have the
- 1:31:41Speaker 9: competence to play at a certain level that got them
- 1:31:44Speaker 9: in the professional ranks. So when things are going badly,
- 1:31:49Speaker 9: sometimes people lose confidence and it makes their job of
- 1:31:52Speaker 9: turning it around more difficult. But guys that maintain their
- 1:31:56Speaker 9: confidence by saying I just missed twelve three pointers in
- 1:31:59Speaker 9: a row, and I'm a great shooter and I'm going
- 1:32:01Speaker 9: to make the next twelve have a better chance of
- 1:32:03Speaker 9: making the next shot than the guy that says this
- 1:32:05Speaker 9: just ain't my day.
- 1:32:06Speaker 8: I am. I can't throw it in the ocean today.
- 1:32:09Speaker 8: I think that that matters.
- 1:32:10Speaker 9: Now A lot of people will look black and white
- 1:32:12Speaker 9: and say, no, it doesn't. It's all about whether or
- 1:32:14Speaker 9: not you make the next one. There's no you don't
- 1:32:16Speaker 9: have a better chance or a worst chance depending on
- 1:32:18Speaker 9: your mindset.
- 1:32:19Speaker 8: Doesn't have anything.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: So where does the confident I believe that it does.
- 1:32:22Speaker 6: Where does the confidence come from?
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: I think this is a chicken or the egg argument, right, yeah, yes,
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: and so I don't know.
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: That's why I kind of in the middle.
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: Of someone who's never had success probably doesn't have as
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: much confidence as someone who's seen success. But again, we've
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: done it before. Even though I'm having a bad day,
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: I know I can do this.
- 1:32:41Speaker 9: But we were dealing with a baseline of ability where
- 1:32:45Speaker 9: people have all had success. The worst player in the
- 1:32:48Speaker 9: NFL has had more successful days playing football than the
- 1:32:51Speaker 9: average Joe. Okay, the worst player in the NFL has
- 1:32:55Speaker 9: had more success than the average Joe. So he come
- 1:33:00Speaker 9: in with a level of confidence that he can do this,
- 1:33:04Speaker 9: But does he think he can do it consistently against
- 1:33:06Speaker 9: the best? And if he doesn't think he can, that's
- 1:33:09Speaker 9: going to make his task of doing it, in my view,
- 1:33:13Speaker 9: more difficult. If you don't think you can do it,
- 1:33:15Speaker 9: you're not going to do it.
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:33:16Speaker 7: It's like the momentum argument. I feel the same kind
- 1:33:18Speaker 7: of thing where you can't really category. He can't really
- 1:33:21Speaker 7: come up with a measurement of it.
- 1:33:23Speaker 8: But yeah, there's a black and white thing.
- 1:33:27Speaker 9: I just feel like Drake may knows he can throw
- 1:33:30Speaker 9: a deep ball, but if he doesn't think he's going
- 1:33:33Speaker 9: to be able to throw the next deep ball properly,
- 1:33:35Speaker 9: you think he's going to throw it as well as
- 1:33:36Speaker 9: he did the one that he did think he.
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: Could throw properly.
- 1:33:41Speaker 9: Yeah, And like they're not robots, they're not all Like,
- 1:33:44Speaker 9: it's not just every play has the same chance to
- 1:33:47Speaker 9: succeed because everybody goes in with the same mindset. I
- 1:33:50Speaker 9: think there's so much that goes into this that's mental.
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Chad from Schenectady. Drake has talked about wanting
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: to earn the ability to lead before even recently. He's
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: still one of the youngest players on the team, and
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: I think a lot of people would agree that being
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: being young, it can be weird and it's definitely something
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: that has to be learned from most people. I think
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: as he gets older and more rooted in the team,
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: that will continue that skill will continue to grow. You
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: can be a vocal leader all you want, but if
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: you play like a play like nine, I mean nine
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: years old, I think no one wants.
- 1:34:24Speaker 5: To hear talking about JJ McCarthy.
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: Oh oh, I didn't what's that all about himself?
- 1:34:32Speaker 8: Nine?
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: I think because that's like his competitive alter ego on
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: the field when he's on something out of stranger when
- 1:34:39Speaker 3: he when he's on the field, he's not JJ anymore.
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: He's nine.
- 1:34:44Speaker 9: So that's another part about having confidence. Another part of
- 1:34:47Speaker 9: the previous email the way is you know, the whole
- 1:34:51Speaker 9: leadership thing at a young age. And I totally agree
- 1:34:54Speaker 9: that Drake is young and he will learn and get
- 1:34:57Speaker 9: better in terms of those those kinds of things, But
- 1:35:00Speaker 9: I don't agree that you can't have that if you're young.
- 1:35:03Speaker 9: Tom Brady entered the league as a fourth quarterback on
- 1:35:06Speaker 9: the roster, sixth round pick, and Bill was struck by
- 1:35:09Speaker 9: his leadership. That was the number one thing that stood
- 1:35:11Speaker 9: out to him was his ability to take the rookie
- 1:35:14Speaker 9: mini camp class. And yes, it does come just because
- 1:35:17Speaker 9: you're a quarterback. A lot of guys are just natural
- 1:35:20Speaker 9: leaders because that's what that position requires. Yep, some guys
- 1:35:25Speaker 9: come into the I mean Tom was a little older
- 1:35:27Speaker 9: than Drake when he came into the league, but he
- 1:35:29Speaker 9: was a nothing compared to Drake.
- 1:35:31Speaker 8: When he came into the league.
- 1:35:32Speaker 9: He was a sixth round pick, the fourth quarterback on
- 1:35:34Speaker 9: the roster, and the reason that Bill was so enamored
- 1:35:37Speaker 9: with him was his leadership. That's what allowed him to
- 1:35:41Speaker 9: stick around. So you can have it when you're young. Now,
- 1:35:45Speaker 9: I'm not telling you that Drake can never develop it
- 1:35:47Speaker 9: because he hasn't necessarily shown that. I think he should
- 1:35:51Speaker 9: he as Rabel said, I think he showed great strides
- 1:35:54Speaker 9: in that department one year in this one year with Rabel,
- 1:35:58Speaker 9: so I think he'll get better and better at it
- 1:35:59Speaker 9: by I don't necessarily think you can't be a good
- 1:36:02Speaker 9: leader if you're young.
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: SPI in Fresno.
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: Do you guys have a sense of the nature and
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: severity of Drake's injury or injuries as well as when
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: they occurred. I don't know how much to factor that
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: in when evaluating his postseason play. Like we can discuss
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: Drake's youth and loss of confidence, lack of clutch, but
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: that should be in context of the injury. I know
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: everyone plays hurt and great players rub dirt on it
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: and carry on, but given how much Drake dropped off,
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: I'd like to discern how much the injury versus wilting
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: against tougher competition came into play.
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: I think that that's a huge factor the entire thing
- 1:36:39Speaker 3: for him and Will Campbell, And the only people that
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: can answer that are Mike Rabol and probably Jim Whalen,
- 1:36:46Speaker 3: and like you know that those people about Like I
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: think both those guys were, you know, especially Campbell. I
- 1:36:52Speaker 3: was actually looking at this yesterday, like his splits pre
- 1:36:55Speaker 3: injury versus post injury. Now, you could also argue that
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: he faced better competition post injury, but I think that
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: at the same time, like you did see a pretty
- 1:37:05Speaker 3: tangible drop off in his performance, especially in past protection
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: from pre injury to post and so like they they
- 1:37:11Speaker 3: would need to decide that, you know, in terms of
- 1:37:13Speaker 3: how to move forward, not necessarily questioning Drake May but
- 1:37:17Speaker 3: especially with Campbell at tackle, like how much of it
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: was his knee and how much of it was that
- 1:37:23Speaker 3: he had good players coming off the ball, you know,
- 1:37:25Speaker 3: across from him.
- 1:37:26Speaker 5: And I think the same thing's true with Drake May
- 1:37:29Speaker 5: so well.
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: In Chicago, Paul kind of touched on this earlier about
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: where they're drafting and you know the difference between thirty
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: one and four, but he said, do we hit well
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: enough in our draft in comparison to previous years? Campbell
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: Henderson had flashes Woodson Farmer had promised until Farmer got hurt.
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: If we hit that well and hit in free agency again,
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: I don't see why we can't play well and make
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: it back to the super Bowl. Screw the hardest schedule.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: We're going to roll over the AFC, no doubt. There
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: is a big difference though, Like, yeah, if you do
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: as well as last year, that's great, but it's going
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: to be harder because it's thirty one instead of four.
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: And I was just doing, like, if you add the
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: numbers up, so four times seven is twenty eight twenty
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: eight verse four times thirty one is like two hundred
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: and whatever. Think of the difference in that number. That's
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: the difference in the quality of guys that you have
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: access to.
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you know, but I we.
- 1:38:25Speaker 7: Say this all the time, and I'll say there are
- 1:38:27Speaker 7: certain teams that draft well that consistently don't matter where
- 1:38:30Speaker 7: they're picking, they find good players. And maybe they don't
- 1:38:32Speaker 7: find ten every draft class, but they're going to find
- 1:38:34Speaker 7: two or three every draft class.
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: And that to me is when it's kind of comes down.
- 1:38:37Speaker 9: Filled with guys that they drafted on a team that
- 1:38:41Speaker 9: famously said f them picks.
- 1:38:42Speaker 5: Yeah, they did draft some of them in the first round.
- 1:38:45Speaker 8: No, No, I know, Jared Versus was a great first round.
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: Yeah, But I think the bigger point is is like
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: if it was super easy to draft guys at the
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: end of every round, then we would all be gms
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: and we'd be running teams right now because so good
- 1:39:00Speaker 3: at it.
- 1:39:01Speaker 9: You know, and people will throw the rams at you.
- 1:39:03Speaker 9: Kansas City is where they are right now because they've struggled,
- 1:39:05Speaker 9: you know, beyond when Trent McDuffie. You know, they struggled
- 1:39:09Speaker 9: to get guys in the thirties.
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: Yea, over the years.
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: It's exactly what happened to the Patriots. Like when you
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: pick down there consistently every single when you're starting to
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: throw darts here.
- 1:39:20Speaker 5: Really are now. I think that it depends on what
- 1:39:24Speaker 5: your line is.
- 1:39:24Speaker 3: Like I would say with the draft class last year,
- 1:39:27Speaker 3: you know, I think it will be at tackle, but
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: Will Campbell's going to be a starter in the league.
- 1:39:30Speaker 3: I don't know if it will be at garter be
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: a tackle long term. And I think Craig Woodson is
- 1:39:34Speaker 3: going to be a starting safety in the league.
- 1:39:36Speaker 23: Now.
- 1:39:37Speaker 5: The other guys, I.
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: Think Jerry's still out Slash maybe Henderson's more of like
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: a change of pace, you know, second running back instead
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: of a true number one back. But they probably got
- 1:39:48Speaker 3: at least three contributors. You know, however, you want to
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: say that that's a good.
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: Draft, probably more.
- 1:39:56Speaker 9: And if you're just saying contributors, you know, you could
- 1:39:59Speaker 9: probably say Campbell, Henderson, Wilson, Woodson, Bora, Regarless. You know,
- 1:40:08Speaker 9: I'm not going even a long snapper Ashby if.
- 1:40:11Speaker 5: You consider those four guys as hits.
- 1:40:14Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean that's right, like contributor out right. I'm
- 1:40:17Speaker 9: willing to say, like, I don't know how good all
- 1:40:19Speaker 9: of those guys are going to be, right, I would
- 1:40:21Speaker 9: say Woodson was the one guy who, at the end
- 1:40:24Speaker 9: of the year I thought was really a sending yep yep,
- 1:40:26Speaker 9: whereas the other guy's kind of leveled off or tailed off.
- 1:40:29Speaker 7: Yeah, that's why I talked to Arcanda last week and
- 1:40:31Speaker 7: he was saying it now, Gonzalez was the only guy
- 1:40:33Speaker 7: who showed up, and I said.
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: Woodson put Woodson in there with you definitely then showed
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: up for sure.
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: Do you think any of them hit the rookie wall?
- 1:40:41Speaker 11: I mean, because when you think about it, I wonder
- 1:40:43Speaker 11: that mostly play in college fourteen games, and you know,
- 1:40:47Speaker 11: if you add in preseason which rookies play, it was
- 1:40:50Speaker 11: twenty four games, and.
- 1:40:51Speaker 7: The injuries to Wilson and Campbell dovetailed into when they
- 1:40:55Speaker 7: would be hitting the wall.
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: So was it injury? Was it that? I mean, it's
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: it's trying to do the the you know.
- 1:41:00Speaker 7: Afterwards, take the body apart, figure out went wrong, and
- 1:41:03Speaker 7: there's so many different little threads you can pull out.
- 1:41:05Speaker 8: You know.
- 1:41:06Speaker 9: Part of it with the rookies that I don't think
- 1:41:08Speaker 9: people talk about as much, and maybe I overrt it,
- 1:41:10Speaker 9: maybe it's not that big a deal, But I think
- 1:41:12Speaker 9: part of the reason why the rookie wall is such
- 1:41:14Speaker 9: a thing is if you think about the end of
- 1:41:16Speaker 9: the rookie it's not just the fourteen games to you know,
- 1:41:20Speaker 9: twenty or whatever it is. But they play their under
- 1:41:22Speaker 9: their schedule, then they work out specifically for the combine.
- 1:41:27Speaker 9: Then they have like all of this pro day stuff.
- 1:41:31Speaker 9: It's like there's.
- 1:41:32Speaker 8: No real off season in terms of rest.
- 1:41:35Speaker 9: Then they go right into OTAs when they get drafted
- 1:41:38Speaker 9: and rookie mini camps and all that stuff, you know,
- 1:41:41Speaker 9: to mini camp, they don't really have any time to reset.
- 1:41:44Speaker 3: Yeah, and they're either in the college Football Playoff or
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: they're at a senior bowl or a shrine bowl.
- 1:41:50Speaker 9: It's a lot of Yeah, it's a long year, and
- 1:41:52Speaker 9: I think that is just as much to do with
- 1:41:54Speaker 9: it as like this season is longer than that season.
- 1:41:58Speaker 6: Yeah, it's the off season to do that.
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: This year, it's basically like, well, a lot of those
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: rookies haven't really taken a true break since the beginning
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: of their college lash college speed, right, you know, like
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: they start in August in college and they go all
- 1:42:12Speaker 3: the way through the end.
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: That's a great point.
- 1:42:14Speaker 7: I think about that too with Rabel, like just I
- 1:42:17Speaker 7: know this wasn't his first time coaching, but like.
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: Gets hired, hires a staff, getting up to speed.
- 1:42:22Speaker 7: You know, it was a long year for him too,
- 1:42:25Speaker 7: having to put this all together.
- 1:42:26Speaker 6: Yep.
- 1:42:27Speaker 8: Yeah, asks anyone on vacation.
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: Good for him. And then you go home, deserve it.
- 1:42:31Speaker 8: You're done, you go home.
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: Where do you go?
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: Darius writes in I've seen a lot of people say
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: we should cut Digs even without restructuring his contract, and
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: I think that's kind of dumb. The right thing to do,
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: in my eyes is keep him as the number two,
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: try to get a number one to pair with him.
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: He still has value being on the roster, and it's
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: still a better receiver than anyone on our roster.
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: Now, from strictly a football standpoint, I couldn't agree more Like,
- 1:42:56Speaker 3: if you're just looking at it as a football thing,
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: I think this is one of the things that's going
- 1:42:59Speaker 3: up by back side, like the twenty six million dollars
- 1:43:02Speaker 3: cap hit on Stefan Diggs. If you think that he's
- 1:43:04Speaker 3: a good football player, then why do you care. They
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: have forty million dollars in cap space. They have plenty
- 1:43:09Speaker 3: of money to throw around, so they don't. Don't start
- 1:43:12Speaker 3: pinching pennies.
- 1:43:13Speaker 5: For our employer.
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: Okay, Like they're all good. It's they have plenty of
- 1:43:16Speaker 3: cap space. If you think that he's washed, if you
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: think that he can't play anymore.
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: That's a different car argument.
- 1:43:22Speaker 3: If you think he's not a good guy off the field,
- 1:43:24Speaker 3: different argument. But if you think that he's gonna be
- 1:43:27Speaker 3: a good football player like he was for them this year.
- 1:43:29Speaker 9: I'm in line with that theory. Then I'm with somebody
- 1:43:31Speaker 9: better than him and have him to be a clear number.
- 1:43:34Speaker 3: To have him be the inside guy, and have Alex
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: Pierce play on the outside or a J.
- 1:43:37Speaker 5: Brown play in the outside or whoever.
- 1:43:39Speaker 7: I get all the criticism of him, I just have
- 1:43:40Speaker 7: a hard time saying, this is the first guy to
- 1:43:42Speaker 7: a thousand yard season here.
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: Right, and now we're here to get rid of it,
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: you know, And I get it, Like I know, I.
- 1:43:48Speaker 3: Just don't understand bringing up the money. Like, if you
- 1:43:50Speaker 3: want to bring up what's going on off the field
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: and say that this is you know, it's better to
- 1:43:54Speaker 3: get out now, then that's a solid argument. If you
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: start bringing up cap hits, I'm like, what do we
- 1:43:59Speaker 3: talk about?
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: Dig?
- 1:44:00Speaker 9: The Dig's argument isn't about what he did, it's what
- 1:44:02Speaker 9: you think he's going to do. And I am one
- 1:44:05Speaker 9: thousand percent with Evan here. If you think that he's still,
- 1:44:09Speaker 9: you know, going to be that player for you, if
- 1:44:11Speaker 9: he then why I don't know why you would want
- 1:44:13Speaker 9: to move.
- 1:44:14Speaker 8: On unless something happens off the field with this.
- 1:44:16Speaker 9: I don't want to make light of you know, his
- 1:44:19Speaker 9: is im pending trial or whatever how that all plays out.
- 1:44:22Speaker 9: I mean, I'm not making light of that at all.
- 1:44:25Speaker 9: But if it's football reasons and you think you could
- 1:44:29Speaker 9: get better than him, I would I would agree I
- 1:44:31Speaker 9: think you can make him number two. I think he
- 1:44:34Speaker 9: very well could have another thousand yard season, which to me,
- 1:44:36Speaker 9: as you know, if it's going to be on one
- 1:44:38Speaker 9: hundred catches again like yawn, like, that doesn't really do
- 1:44:42Speaker 9: much for me. If it's not enough place or it's boring,
- 1:44:45Speaker 9: it kind of it kind of is I'm not gonna lie,
- 1:44:47Speaker 9: that's that's kind of accurate. I don't know, yeah, I
- 1:44:52Speaker 9: mean it catches for a thousand yards.
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: First, Now he's gone down fifteen, Well that's where he
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: had eighty five hundred. I'll take a guy with one
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: hundred catch.
- 1:45:02Speaker 8: My point is ten yards of catch doesn't really do
- 1:45:04Speaker 8: much for me.
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: I'll take it. That's my best guy.
- 1:45:06Speaker 9: Now, if I have a guy that's you know, averaging,
- 1:45:09Speaker 9: you know, you know that maybe has you know, one
- 1:45:13Speaker 9: thousand yards you know on fifteen yards of catch and
- 1:45:16Speaker 9: making dynamic plays all over the field, then that's different.
- 1:45:19Speaker 9: Now this number two guy is Wes Welker, right, Yeah,
- 1:45:23Speaker 9: that's a little different.
- 1:45:23Speaker 5: From a football standpoint.
- 1:45:25Speaker 3: That's that's what they should be trying to do.
- 1:45:28Speaker 5: In my opinion, is you know, digs.
- 1:45:30Speaker 3: In the playoffs, I think started to see a lot
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: of extra attention in the middle of the field. Team's
- 1:45:35Speaker 3: bracketing him, doubling him, you know, rotating the safeties into
- 1:45:39Speaker 3: the winter that he's trying to throw into. So, now
- 1:45:42Speaker 3: if you have one on ones on the outside because
- 1:45:43Speaker 3: they're clamping down on digs, but you have a better
- 1:45:46Speaker 3: receiver that's playing outside, well, now you pick your poison. Right,
- 1:45:50Speaker 3: you have a guy over the top of the outside
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: receiver and taking chances with Diggs or vice versa.
- 1:45:55Speaker 7: And I'm not going to say he's going to go
- 1:45:56Speaker 7: back to being what he was, but is it worth
- 1:45:58Speaker 7: mentioning he was first year off an A C L.
- 1:46:01Speaker 7: I mean, usually I give a guy a year to
- 1:46:02Speaker 7: you know, be back to order. Said, I don't know
- 1:46:04Speaker 7: if he's getting back to that level.
- 1:46:05Speaker 9: Say if you look back to his last three years,
- 1:46:07Speaker 9: that's what he is that guy.
- 1:46:11Speaker 3: If he's that guy, but there's somebody taking attention away
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: from him, that's playing on the outside, I just think
- 1:46:17Speaker 3: that that's perfectly functional, right, that that's gonna be that's
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: my two guy.
- 1:46:21Speaker 9: I'm all for that now. I think I can have
- 1:46:23Speaker 9: the makings of a dynamic passing.
- 1:46:25Speaker 6: It ton Yeah, all right.
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: On the phone is Christian from La what's up, Christian.
- 1:46:33Speaker 12: Hey you guys, Hey, you guys. I wanted to let
- 1:46:38Speaker 12: you guys know the update. I went with my gut
- 1:46:41Speaker 12: and I took the tickets for next year and didn't
- 1:46:43Speaker 12: go to the Super Bowl up there. I chose to
- 1:46:47Speaker 12: tickets and try to go and go this year when
- 1:46:49Speaker 12: it when it's so fine. If I was there and
- 1:46:53Speaker 12: I had spent seven thousand dollars and the game turned
- 1:46:56Speaker 12: out the way it did, I would have I would
- 1:46:58Speaker 12: have just been beside myself. So I think I made
- 1:47:01Speaker 12: the vist choice. I'm sorry we be lost, but I
- 1:47:05Speaker 12: think we're going to be back. And here's what I
- 1:47:07Speaker 12: mean by that, you guys, I know you're not going
- 1:47:09Speaker 12: to agree with me, but I just got to address
- 1:47:12Speaker 12: some nonsense here. Robert Kraft made a man's decision last
- 1:47:18Speaker 12: year when he said to a potentially great coach one year,
- 1:47:24Speaker 12: you gotta go. I don't have time to wait for
- 1:47:27Speaker 12: you to develop. And he got rid of Gerard Mayo
- 1:47:29Speaker 12: and he got Mike Brable and we saw what happened.
- 1:47:32Speaker 12: We made a similar mistake as I think we're making
- 1:47:34Speaker 12: now with Cold Strange because we drafted him high.
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: And Will.
- 1:47:41Speaker 5: I'm sorry you me and Will Campbell. No, Cold Strange,
- 1:47:44Speaker 5: Cole Strange isn't on the team anymore.
- 1:47:47Speaker 12: Exactly my point, because we drafted Cole Strange high and
- 1:47:51Speaker 12: everyone laughed at us. We kept him way too long.
- 1:47:55Speaker 12: We hoped he would develop. We said, up, we put
- 1:47:58Speaker 12: people on hi the side of him and give him
- 1:47:59Speaker 12: some help, he'll develop. Well, guess what happened.
- 1:48:03Speaker 8: You got her twice.
- 1:48:05Speaker 12: We made well.
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: And it's not a kind of apples to Apple are talking.
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: They didn't keep Cold Strange too, but no, but even
- 1:48:13Speaker 2: if they did, you can get away with holding onto
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: a guard too long more than a head coach.
- 1:48:18Speaker 8: Yeah, and no one thought that Gerard Mayo has had
- 1:48:20Speaker 8: the potential to be a great coach.
- 1:48:23Speaker 12: I haven't made yet.
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's so far. The only thing we agree
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: with is that where we weren't going to agree with you.
- 1:48:31Speaker 9: When people say that, I automatically say, I'll bet you
- 1:48:33Speaker 9: I agree with this, but I don't, you know anyway,
- 1:48:36Speaker 9: keep going Christian, We'll let you go.
- 1:48:39Speaker 12: So the point I'm making is we need to just
- 1:48:42Speaker 12: rip the band aid off now of what the development
- 1:48:47Speaker 12: stage with with with with Will Campbell for two years,
- 1:48:51Speaker 12: Let's put the one on the side of them, this side,
- 1:48:53Speaker 12: let's put a guard on the inside of him, a
- 1:48:55Speaker 12: new title on the outside, and let's let this guy develop.
- 1:48:58Speaker 12: We are not in development stage anymore. We are a
- 1:49:01Speaker 12: Super Bowl competing team. We need to keep competing. And
- 1:49:05Speaker 12: I'm sorry to say this. Like Wilkes, he's a great kid,
- 1:49:09Speaker 12: but we can't wait two years for him to develop.
- 1:49:11Speaker 12: That's all I guys say about that the draft. Here's
- 1:49:14Speaker 12: the other things that I want to draft about the draft,
- 1:49:15Speaker 12: and then I'll get off the air. We have eleven
- 1:49:18Speaker 12: picks that eleven chances right to get them that maybe
- 1:49:23Speaker 12: won't even play. So why are we stuck on this
- 1:49:26Speaker 12: arcade method of drafting? Why don't we take five of
- 1:49:29Speaker 12: those eleven pick that we have? Patritson trying to find
- 1:49:32Speaker 12: a partner to help us move up in the draft. Again,
- 1:49:36Speaker 12: we are not in developmental stage anymore. We are not
- 1:49:38Speaker 12: Oh yeah, we made it two years.
- 1:49:40Speaker 5: We don't have that kind of value. Yeah, sixth round pick?
- 1:49:43Speaker 2: What trade?
- 1:49:44Speaker 8: What where do you want to move to in the draft.
- 1:49:47Speaker 12: I think if we gave up, you know, five of
- 1:49:50Speaker 12: those sixth rounds, when's the last time the five Tom
- 1:49:53Speaker 12: Brady and Russell Wilson a sixth round.
- 1:49:55Speaker 9: All right, so you want to trade the four to
- 1:49:57Speaker 9: sixth round picks. Okay, so now you've got a fifth
- 1:49:59Speaker 9: round or what are you going to do?
- 1:50:01Speaker 12: I don't want to I want to trade the sixth
- 1:50:04Speaker 12: round picky to get a third rounder.
- 1:50:06Speaker 5: Okay, Well, I mean I mean that'd be great.
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:50:09Speaker 8: I think you know my line about this one about
- 1:50:12Speaker 8: my aunt.
- 1:50:13Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, she had she had a sex question.
- 1:50:17Speaker 8: She'd be my uncle.
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:50:18Speaker 6: That's that's the volume picks to get to the third round.
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: Cold Strange seventeen games, ten games to four games. I
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: mean just he was hurt.
- 1:50:25Speaker 9: So and again, Cole Strange was a bad pick.
- 1:50:28Speaker 5: I was confused about where he was.
- 1:50:29Speaker 2: It was a bad pick for where they picked him.
- 1:50:31Speaker 7: Well, yeah, like they kept rolling him out there, like
- 1:50:34Speaker 7: but yeah, it's not like he started every game for
- 1:50:36Speaker 7: three years because he was the first round pick.
- 1:50:38Speaker 9: He kept getting hurt. They never could figure out if
- 1:50:43Speaker 9: can this guy not stay healthy? Does he have the
- 1:50:45Speaker 9: ability to play? Turns out he was not worthy of
- 1:50:48Speaker 9: the first round pick and he couldn't stay healthy. I
- 1:50:51Speaker 9: don't think that they held on to him too long.
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: I mean they were trying to play him at center.
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: I mean they were trying to House House would say, like,
- 1:50:57Speaker 3: I think Will Campbell's played a lot more, lot better
- 1:51:00Speaker 3: at left tackle than Cole Stranger.
- 1:51:02Speaker 9: And I would also say, just to be fair, and
- 1:51:04Speaker 9: I won't just say all disagree with everything that Christian said.
- 1:51:08Speaker 9: If they think that they can get better than Will
- 1:51:10Speaker 9: Campbell at left tackle, then I'm all for.
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: Just seven six round picks to get a first This
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: whole Chris, we love it.
- 1:51:19Speaker 5: I didn't know where he was going.
- 1:51:20Speaker 9: I would you know this archaic way of drafting. Well,
- 1:51:23Speaker 9: first of all, we don't really know exactly how this
- 1:51:26Speaker 9: regime is good. They had one draft. Let's see maybe
- 1:51:29Speaker 9: they maybe they think like you and they feel like
- 1:51:31Speaker 9: their rosters are a better spot. We don't need to
- 1:51:33Speaker 9: make eleven picks. Maybe they don't making the eight picks.
- 1:51:37Speaker 9: Maybe they will trade up two or three times in
- 1:51:39Speaker 9: this draft.
- 1:51:40Speaker 5: I promise you they don't need to take eleven guys. No,
- 1:51:42Speaker 5: well they don't, for our sake, for anybody's.
- 1:51:45Speaker 7: Sake, it is one of the really hard things to
- 1:51:48Speaker 7: figure out a guy like Jared Wilson and say, do
- 1:51:50Speaker 7: we believe that he, with a little time is going
- 1:51:52Speaker 7: to be a plus center or a plus left guard,
- 1:51:55Speaker 7: you know, and having to make that decision now. But
- 1:51:57Speaker 7: I just I hate the general sentiment. I hated it
- 1:51:59Speaker 7: when I was blogging. The people say, if the rookie
- 1:52:01Speaker 7: stunk as a rookie, he's always gonna stink and no
- 1:52:04Speaker 7: one's ever going to get better and they are what
- 1:52:05Speaker 7: they are, and so just get rid of them now,
- 1:52:07Speaker 7: you know, you gotta give you got to pick the
- 1:52:09Speaker 7: right guys to give the time too. I understand the pos.
- 1:52:12Speaker 9: Agree with that, you know, just I also agree with
- 1:52:14Speaker 9: the other side. If the guy plays right away, he
- 1:52:16Speaker 9: doesn't mean right like.
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: And that's right, and so you got to pick the
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: right guys. It's a hard decision.
- 1:52:21Speaker 7: I mean, like, you know, Josh Farmer, I don't know,
- 1:52:23Speaker 7: we saw little of him this year. Do they still think, man,
- 1:52:26Speaker 7: he was coming? You know, I don't know what I said.
- 1:52:28Speaker 7: I don't know Josh. I don't know what any of
- 1:52:29Speaker 7: these guys are, but maybe they believe in you know,
- 1:52:32Speaker 7: I'm just picking a random one. I mean, I think
- 1:52:33Speaker 7: Will Campbell's a different example, because he's a fourth overall pick.
- 1:52:36Speaker 3: And he's just played better than all these guys, right
- 1:52:39Speaker 3: and like, especially pre injury. Like I think the Will
- 1:52:42Speaker 3: Campbell that we're thinking of is obviously the guy that
- 1:52:44Speaker 3: played in the playoffs and didn't play well in the playoffs.
- 1:52:46Speaker 3: But for the first twelve thirteen weeks of the season,
- 1:52:49Speaker 3: he was not playing like he did in the playoffs.
- 1:52:51Speaker 8: And no, and it wasn't that bad.
- 1:52:53Speaker 3: Yeah, And I would just say, you know, with guys
- 1:52:56Speaker 3: that are picked high in the draft, you are going
- 1:52:57Speaker 3: to give them more leaps.
- 1:52:58Speaker 5: That's just the we just pick of the draft.
- 1:53:01Speaker 8: I'm sorry the beast, that's the way it works.
- 1:53:04Speaker 9: And he's going to get more opportunities than Marcus Bryant
- 1:53:07Speaker 9: was picking the seventh round.
- 1:53:08Speaker 3: And can you like start like this is the time
- 1:53:11Speaker 3: of year where we got to put names to claims, man,
- 1:53:13Speaker 3: Like if you're gonna move this, okay, yeah, Like if
- 1:53:16Speaker 3: you're gonna move them, if you're gonna you know, move
- 1:53:18Speaker 3: on from him, or whatever dramatic thing you want to say,
- 1:53:21Speaker 3: Like you have to be able to have an answer
- 1:53:23Speaker 3: at left tackle, Like, so, who's gonna play left tackle?
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: Team Will? I'm team Will. He's gonna do what he
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: needs to do to get better in the off season,
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: get healthy, It'll be good.
- 1:53:33Speaker 8: I'm team Will.
- 1:53:34Speaker 9: Team Will.
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: He's a free agent.
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: Yeah, we're gonna sign.
- 1:53:42Speaker 3: He was just trending in such a fine direction before
- 1:53:44Speaker 3: he got hurt. And so I'm not saying it's all
- 1:53:48Speaker 3: just on the knee, but like, can we at least
- 1:53:50Speaker 3: acknowledge the fact that he was playing on a bum
- 1:53:52Speaker 3: knee and then he was also playing the best pass
- 1:53:54Speaker 3: rushes in the NFL with on a bum knee. So like,
- 1:53:57Speaker 3: let's see what he looks like could start next season.
- 1:53:59Speaker 3: Does he look like the guy that would you know,
- 1:54:01Speaker 3: pre injury? Or does he look like the guy in
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: the playoffs?
- 1:54:05Speaker 6: All right, let's go to Brad in Ohio.
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: He'll be our last caller. What's up, Brad?
- 1:54:12Speaker 24: He love fellow.
- 1:54:13Speaker 12: How are we doing today?
- 1:54:14Speaker 24: Okay, I'm gonna make a brief because I know you're out.
- 1:54:19Speaker 24: We're about out of time. So I think, first of all,
- 1:54:23Speaker 24: Joshua's hamstrung call and plays in the super Bowl for
- 1:54:26Speaker 24: the exact reasons you've all been discussing Number one, that
- 1:54:30Speaker 24: was so obvious. And then for McDaniel's offense, he's a
- 1:54:36Speaker 24: running game oriented guy. So I would want hopefully that
- 1:54:40Speaker 24: we draft in that where we're going to be drafting
- 1:54:44Speaker 24: a blocking tight end that can catch too. And then
- 1:54:48Speaker 24: I wanted to ask Evan about a fullback that plays
- 1:54:51Speaker 24: for Michigan, Max Bredeston, that I would love to see
- 1:54:55Speaker 24: in a Patriots uniform in Josh McDaniel's offense.
- 1:54:58Speaker 4: And that's all I got.
- 1:54:59Speaker 23: Guys like the Indiana Okay, thanks, thanks Brad, Yeah, see
- 1:55:03Speaker 23: you about full back, and he got you know, Brock
- 1:55:05Speaker 23: lamp He's still technically under contract with the team, and
- 1:55:10Speaker 23: I think they thought he was going to be the
- 1:55:12Speaker 23: full back.
- 1:55:12Speaker 19: I didn't.
- 1:55:13Speaker 3: They really felt like that they had the guy already
- 1:55:17Speaker 3: with Lampy. So we'll see what happens there. But that
- 1:55:20Speaker 3: goes back to my point I was making earlier, like
- 1:55:22Speaker 3: is that the hip of offense you want to be?
- 1:55:24Speaker 10: Like?
- 1:55:25Speaker 5: Do they want to be under center? Twenty one two? Back?
- 1:55:28Speaker 5: Full back behind the quarterback?
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: Like?
- 1:55:30Speaker 5: Is that is that the the way they want to play?
- 1:55:33Speaker 5: You know, I don't know. We'll find out.
- 1:55:36Speaker 6: We will find out, and we'll be back on Thursday
- 1:55:41Speaker 6: catch twenty two this week tomorrow.
- 1:55:42Speaker 2: Because I know Bartha said he's was sick.
- 1:55:45Speaker 5: What he's fine? Yeah, he told you he was sick.
- 1:55:47Speaker 2: He is on air he was telling people he got
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: really sick coming back from the super Bowl.
- 1:55:51Speaker 6: The other thing I want to.
- 1:55:52Speaker 2: Know is I was sitting next to you on as
- 1:55:54Speaker 2: Taylor Kyle's got his account Bay, he did.
- 1:55:57Speaker 3: An he got it back yesterday and he posts say
- 1:56:00Speaker 3: the picture like him holding up a piece of paper
- 1:56:02Speaker 3: and it was like it's actually me or or whatever
- 1:56:05Speaker 3: to like prove that it.
- 1:56:06Speaker 5: Wasn't like a box.
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: But the real question is would he rather lose the
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: account and have the mer sake. That's a lot of
- 1:56:13Speaker 2: work that'd be worth it.
- 1:56:14Speaker 5: He can't post film anymore have the account.
- 1:56:18Speaker 3: I think he spent a lot of his life building
- 1:56:20Speaker 3: up that account, but he can't post film anymore.
- 1:56:23Speaker 5: That's a good point.
- 1:56:24Speaker 2: So I think you and Boss should have guests, and
- 1:56:26Speaker 2: you should bring in Taylor once.
- 1:56:28Speaker 5: We'd be happy to know.
- 1:56:29Speaker 6: Why not.
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: It can be only one.
- 1:56:32Speaker 8: Let's have them all for the organization.
- 1:56:34Speaker 2: Seems like they do any.
- 1:56:38Speaker 19: Wow.
- 1:56:39Speaker 5: Wow say that prank caller.
- 1:56:42Speaker 7: Prank caller, I don't know that somebody hacked Paul.
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: All right, I'm taking my vouchback. We'll talk to you
- 1:56:48Speaker 2: on Thursday.
