- 0:07The Detroit Tigers faced the Texas Rangers for a Tuesday night game at Arlington Stadium on May 17, 1977.
- 0:14Detroit was coached by Ralph Hauck and were at best an average and aging team.
- 0:18Their future was all still in the farm system.
- 0:20They started the season off slow with a 14-18 record.
- 0:24Texas was a team on the rise and came in with a 16-14 record under manager Frank Lucchese.
- 0:29They had a few young stars like Jim Sundberg and Mike Hargrove along with a collection of solid vets like Burt Campanaris,
- 0:35Toby Harrah, Gaylord Perry and Burt Blylevin.
- 0:38This audio recording is from the Detroit Radio broadcast featuring announcers Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey.
- 0:44This is only the second meeting between these two clubs.
- 0:47Doyle Alexander now in the uniform of the Texas Rangers.
- 0:50I had said earlier he had a career record of 13-3. I'd like to amend that to 11-3. That's about enough.
- 0:56He was 4-1 against the Tigers last year, winning two and losing none while with Baltimore
- 1:02before going in the trade in June to the Yankees and then while with New York.
- 1:06He won two and lost one and pitched him near no hitter against the Tigers last year.
- 1:11He's on the mound. Ron LaFleur in the batter's box here for the play-by-play Ernie Harwell.
- 1:15Thank you Paul Carey. Hi everybody. Ron, they're waiting and here's the first pitch to him.
- 1:19He swings and taps one toward shortstop.
- 1:21Fielded by Campanaris, throw to first, he's out.
- 1:24Paul LaFleur went up there hitting 242, hits the first pitch and bounces out to short.
- 1:31Here's Tito Fuentes. He'll be batting left-handed against the right-hander Alexander.
- 1:35Tito hitting 310, batting much better right-handed than left.
- 1:41Big breeze, a booming in from the outfield.
- 1:43It'll be Harrah at third, Campanaris at shortstop, Wills at second, and Hargrove at first.
- 1:48Comprising the infield for the Rangers in the outfield.
- 1:50They've got Washington in left, Benicas is in center and Grieve is in right.
- 1:55Here's a ball in too close to curveball. He started the month with good.
- 2:01Ken Henderson on the disabled list.
- 2:05Pulled a leg muscle on a hit-and-run play last week.
- 2:09Here's a butt attempt and it is past the third baseman down to shortstop.
- 2:13Campy can't make a play and Fuentes is almost about single.
- 2:17He picked his spot, he hit it wide to the third baseman and slowly toward short, Campanaris came in, fielded the ball.
- 2:23Could not make the play, it'll be a base hit.
- 2:26Well, he got rid of one of those Alexander no-hit bits in a hurry tonight.
- 2:29Yeah, he's a man who flirted with the no-hitters so many times in the last couple of years.
- 2:34Couple of times against the Tigers.
- 2:37Here's Mankowski moved up to number three in the batting order.
- 2:40Musty Stobb out of action.
- 2:42He has a full muscle on the side.
- 2:45Mankowski batting 3.44 and he takes the strike.
- 2:54Alexander basically a slider and a stinker-ficker.
- 2:59Big tall right-hander from Alabama steps down the mound.
- 3:02He does it as the runner goes, the ball is swung on and fouled away.
- 3:06That's when he's moving but he'll have to come on back.
- 3:09Two strikes, the count on Mankowski.
- 3:11He'll be followed by Ogilvy.
- 3:14He has a severe bruise on his right arm.
- 3:22Sustained in the series in Milwaukee, he can swing the bat not very well.
- 3:29Now the step by the right-hander Alexander, he flips one over to first baseman Hargrove
- 3:33and back in time is the other Pumatis.
- 3:36No score first inning, the man on and the man off for the tie.
- 3:41Here's the pitch, he swings and fouls it away.
- 3:44Right down below us, above the screen.
- 3:48Alexander so far throwing nothing but strikes in the early part of this game.
- 3:54Laplou bounced out and then a font single puts Pumatis on first base.
- 3:58That's where we are now.
- 4:00Mankowski waiting on the strike two delivery.
- 4:03It's a wide one, Sunberg doing the catching.
- 4:13Outfield almost straight away on Mankowski.
- 4:16Still a good bit of daylight left.
- 4:18It's cloudy however at the moment.
- 4:21Pumatis back standing up.
- 4:27The Rangers have been thought off and on so far this year.
- 4:30They've not been able to get a big streak going.
- 4:33Throw to first, he's back safely again.
- 4:35Jerry Newdecker right over there on top of the play.
- 4:41Tigers came in here Sunday night, spent their off day in Texas.
- 4:45And resuming action here this evening.
- 4:47The pitch is a tip foul I believe out of the mitt of Sunberg.
- 4:53One and two, the count stays.
- 4:55He's trying to check his swing, the ball nicked the bat going by.
- 5:00Ogilvy taking a couple of practice swings up the on deck circle.
- 5:06Now Pumatis leads off again.
- 5:08Alexander to the set position delivers.
- 5:10It's a pitch out but Cito's not moving, 2-2.
- 5:17Tomorrow night we'll see two veterans go at each other.
- 5:20Gaylord Perry and John Hiller.
- 5:22John getting a start.
- 5:24Here's the pitch, run it goes.
- 5:26Ball is plugged in the right field foul, back into the seat.
- 5:29He pulled it a little bit too much down the line over the bullpen where the Rangers warm up.
- 5:40Perry is 2-4, Hiller has a record of 1-3 so far.
- 5:47Gaylord will be going for his 100th win in the American League.
- 5:52I don't mean he has won 100 in each league, only Cy Young and Jim Bunning have done that before him.
- 5:58100 wins in each of the major leagues.
- 6:02Here's the set now, Alexander delivers.
- 6:04It is a ball off, Pumatis held on at first base that time.
- 6:07A full count now on Mankowski.
- 6:15Hargrove holding on the back trying to keep Pumatis close.
- 6:20Mankowski digs in, it's the scoreless first inning.
- 6:23There's a throw over the first by Alexander, the runner back in time.
- 6:33Now the set by the right-hander throws to first again, Pumatis back safely.
- 6:37Didn't have to slide.
- 6:43LaBird did chirping from the corner of the dugout.
- 6:46Here's the set and the pitch, run it goes.
- 6:48Ball is filed to the screen, they send him again.
- 6:51Time on the 3-2 pitch with the one away.
- 6:55And a new supply of baseballs has to be brought out to the plate umpire Al Clark.
- 7:02Clark back at the plate, Hugh Deckard first, Francis second, and Abramagan umpiring at third.
- 7:07Same umpire as the Tigers had in the Milwaukee series.
- 7:12Now the 3-2 pitch again.
- 7:14There goes Pumatis, it is a ball low, walks him, and there are two men on with the one away.
- 7:20That'll bring up Ben Ogilvy.
- 7:23It'll be interesting to see how well Ben can swing with that bad right arm.
- 7:27Ralph Houch, when we were talking about starting lineup, he said,
- 7:31well, Bob won't be in there because he's got a bad side, and Ogilvy is playing,
- 7:36although he's hurting and really can't take a full swing.
- 7:40Ralph said, I'll have Ogilvy bunt three times.
- 7:45Well, we'll see. Two men on, one man down.
- 7:49Ben hitting 271.
- 7:51We're in the first inning, and he takes the strike.
- 7:57Ben swings so hard, if he cut down his swing by 25 percent, it's going to be a big swing.
- 8:04One strike to count on him now.
- 8:06Man on second Pumatis, the man on first, Mankowski.
- 8:10Hargrove is playing behind Mankowski, and there's a strike called.
- 8:15Two strikes on Ogilvy.
- 8:22These camp weights on deck for the Detroiters.
- 8:26They've got a scoring opportunity in the opening inning.
- 8:29Two men on, one man down.
- 8:32Two quick strikes across on Ogilvy.
- 8:34Alexander to the set position, delivers.
- 8:36Here's a ball in too close.
- 8:39Jack knifes out of the way of that one, one and two to count on Ben.
- 8:50Mankowski can get a very big lead at first base with the first baseman Hargrove behind him.
- 8:55Now the pitch. It's a checked swing, ball two.
- 8:59He almost went across, two to the count on Ogilvy.
- 9:06Ben steps out for a moment.
- 9:16Alexander taking his time.
- 9:19Ogilvy waiting. Here it comes.
- 9:21He swings and misses.
- 9:23Got him on a breaking pitch, and I believe it was low on outside.
- 9:27He strikes out, and the batter will be Kemp.
- 9:34Kemp batting 264 in exactly 30 games.
- 9:37He has five home runs and 17 runs batted in.
- 9:41Alexander has now walked one, struck out one, and given up a hit.
- 9:48The outfield will defend straight away against Mr. Kemp, and the batting next will be Thompson.
- 9:56Cloudy skies in Arlington, Texas.
- 10:04Now being set by Alexander, the pitch is a slow curve. It's been close.
- 10:09Ball one.
- 10:11Talk to some of the ranger players. They say they like to play down here because they can find the places to live very near the ballpark.
- 10:18That's the start of a little town atmosphere out here. Easy to get around.
- 10:22The 1-2 delivery. Swing and there's a line drive. Base hit the right field.
- 10:26Greaves coming over the field of ball. Rounding third is DeWittes. He's headed for home.
- 10:30He'll score. The throw goes into second, and on the third goes Mankowski on the RBI single by Kemp,
- 10:35and the Tigers have a once-or-nothing lead in the opening inning.
- 10:39Kemp delivers a single to right. The Tigers jump ahead.
- 10:47Here's Jason Thompson stepping in. Jason hitting.255.
- 10:52The RBI leader on the team with.21. He is tied with Ogilvy, and for the home run leadership, each has six.
- 11:00Two singles and a walk in between producing a Detroit run and putting them out in front.
- 11:05We're in the very first inning in Texas.
- 11:10Mankowski on the third. Kemp on the first. And Jason looks at a curve across for a strike.
- 11:24Enfield back now, except for the first baseman, Hargrove, holding with a runner.
- 11:29Moved him back with a fast ball. He jumped out of the way of that one. One-on-one account on Thompson.
- 11:36Well, we've got the old runmaker, Vince Desmond, here with us. He produced one for the Tigers today.
- 11:44Alexander into the set position, and delivers. Here's a bounding ball on the right side.
- 11:49Bump Wills comes over. Grunt did use the flip over to Hargrove, and the inning's over.
- 11:54Thompson is out second to first. The side retired. The Tigers get one. One run on two hits and a walk.
- 11:59No errors. Two runners are left. At the end of a half inning, Detroit won. Texas coming to bat.
- 12:05When Fred Cousins goes to work on the Marathon Pipeline in Palo Wyoming, he doesn't work alone.
- 12:11He gets together with guys like Tom Graham, Merle Severs, and John Sparger.
- 12:16And together they go about the business of maintaining the pipeline.
- 12:20Fred Cousins could work alone. The job wouldn't get done as well, or at all, without the help of Tom, Merle, and John.
- 12:27Because each of them can do something the other one can't. So they get together to do it better.
- 12:33The company is like its people, because it is people.
- 12:37When Marathons found oil, our oil people got together with some pipeline people,
- 12:42who got together with some refining people, who got together with some service station people, so we could do it better.
- 12:49We got together to do it better. We are Marathons.
- 13:02Marathon Oil Company. We got together to do it better.
- 13:15Dave Rosemont, the young right-hander, ready to go to work now.
- 13:20Dave, with a 1-0 lead, the tag is scoring there off Alexander one time.
- 13:25Rosemont has won three and lost none. First time out against the Rangers.
- 13:32And he's completed his tune-up tosses. He's about ready to go to work.
- 13:44Rosemont beat Boston, you remember, in April on a four-hit shutout.
- 13:47He beat the Brewers in Detroit on seven hits, and then he beat the Brewers again on five hits the last time out.
- 13:56So he's three and all, and now faces Claudel Washington, who will be leading it off the sector.
- 14:04Claudel batting 323.
- 14:12Two home runs for the left-hander, that's 10 RBI.
- 14:19And it's Lowell, the first pick to him, Milton May doing the catching tonight.
- 14:23Thompson at first, Lewis playing second. Wagner at short and Mankowski at third.
- 14:29Now the pick by the Rose is swung on and fouled away right down below it.
- 14:34One and one, they count on Claudel.
- 14:36In the outfield, the Tigers have Kemp and Laplore in center and Ogilvy in right.
- 14:48Here's a cut and a miss by Washington, one and two to count on him.
- 14:57Laplore, the center fielder playing call to Claudel, a little bit to the left side.
- 15:01Here's the windup in the pitch.
- 15:03Swing of the bounding ball, deep first, gloved by Thompson.
- 15:06He'll toss the Rose, McCovering, and out at first is Claudel Washington.
- 15:11Bert Campanaris, the veteran shortstop, ready to step in.
- 15:19Breeze coming in from the outfield, almost in center field, maybe right center.
- 15:26And it is a strong breeze this evening, one nothing Tigers in the lead.
- 15:33Campy, been at the knees, waiting, standing near the plate, takes the curve across.
- 15:38He's batting three all three.
- 15:47Here's a curve low.
- 15:48We asked Dick Williams one time after he left Oakland who he thought the most valuable player he had on that ball club day in and day out,
- 15:55and he said Campanaris.
- 15:59Here's the windup in the pitch.
- 16:00A chop, a hit toward third will go foul.
- 16:04One and two, the count on Bert.
- 16:11When the Tigers finish this series, they'll go into Cincinnati for the exhibition game,
- 16:16and we will broadcast that game on our Tiger Network.
- 16:20Here's the pitch.
- 16:21It is a curve outside.
- 16:25That's that San La benefit exhibition game in Cincinnati.
- 16:28Mark Frederick coming back into action.
- 16:33And that's been added to our broadcast schedule.
- 16:36Now Rosema's going to get another ball.
- 16:41What time does that game start Paul?
- 16:427 o'clock.
- 16:437 o'clock, so we'll be on the air at 645 that evening.
- 16:50The bird will make his debut for the year in relief.
- 16:54Here's the 2-2 pitch now coming up from Rosema.
- 16:58Campy takes strike.
- 16:59Oh, he stood there by the side of the road and watched that one go by.
- 17:04Struck him out.
- 17:06Two down, nobody on.
- 17:07Mike Hargrove will bat next.
- 17:14Left hand batting first backer.
- 17:18Hargrove hitting 310.
- 17:21Some pretty impressive batting averages here on this Texas lineup.
- 17:29Now those Cubs will have some impressive batting averages after today.
- 17:33They scored 23 runs.
- 17:35Meet San Diego 23 to 6 at Wrigley Field with seven home runs to their credit.
- 17:44Now the Rose pitches and it's a swing and a fly ball to right.
- 17:47Here's Ogilvy coming in.
- 17:48He makes the catch on the run toward the diamond.
- 17:51Nothing across for Texas at the end of one, Detroit one, Texas nothing.
- 17:57Hi, I'm Ernie Harwell and I'm here with a couple of competitors in the Chrysler Plymouth Dealers Honorary Tiger Batboy Contest.
- 18:04Paul, how does this thing work?
- 18:05Well, any boy or girl between 8 and 14 can sign up in any participating Chrysler Plymouth dealer.
- 18:11For a body they are accompanied by a licensed driver 18 or older.
- 18:15That's right and there's no obligation for signing up.
- 18:18Then 22 Batboys will be picked on June the 2nd, right Katie?
- 18:22Right, 22 winners. One Philly Chrysler Plymouth dealer.
- 18:26And everyone who signs up gets a free Tiger iron-on patch.
- 18:29Great, well that about does it.
- 18:31So kids grab your parents and stop into any participating Chrysler Plymouth dealer between April 18th and May 27th and sign up for the Tiger Batboy Contest.
- 18:41Thank you Katie and Paul and this is...
- 18:43Oh, there's one more thing.
- 18:45Yes Katie?
- 18:46Wouldn't that be that person?
- 18:49Well anyway, see you're participating Greater Detroit Chrysler Plymouth dealer soon.
- 18:58Just so you'll know, WJR presents Town and Country, the first thing every morning at 5.
- 19:03This is Jim Garrett inviting you to join Tom Campbell and me on Radio 76.
- 19:16Milt May coming up now. Milt's got a five game hitting streak on the line.
- 19:21Left hander batting catcher hitting 306.
- 19:24Today is his 99th time at bat this year.
- 19:27One nothing, the Tigers scored in the first on a single by point is the Wachman and Kowski and a single by camp.
- 19:37Doyle Alexander, the tall right hander working on the mound for the Rangers this evening in the first of a two game series.
- 19:46Outfield straight away on May and he swings and caps one toward Campanaris.
- 19:50He charges to his right, loves it, throw to first, the hard girl's got him.
- 19:54So the leadoff man in each of the two innings for the Tigers has bounced his shorts up on the first pitch.
- 20:03Here's John Wachinfus coming up. John is used as the designated hitter tonight.
- 20:08We told you Rusty Saab has an ailing side.
- 20:11Wachinfus batting 273, a couple of home runs and five runs battered in.
- 20:16This is the second city on the Tigers 11 day, 11 game, four city trip.
- 20:23That includes the exhibition at Cincinnati.
- 20:28There's a strike called on Wachinfus. Milwaukee, Texas, Cincinnati and Chicago are the stops on this one.
- 20:37Tigers coming home on May the 24th to battle the Angels in a night game.
- 20:43Swing with a draft to left going back Washington. He's there, makes the catch.
- 20:48Two down, nobody on and Mark Wagner will be the Tiger batter, the number nine hitter with a batting mark of 140.
- 20:57Mark with one home run, he's knocked in three runs. This is his 19th game.
- 21:14It's a shot to center field, a base hit from Mark. He lines one into center fielded by Vanikas and rifled back into Diamond.
- 21:27That is the third Tiger hit off by Alexander. All three have been singles.
- 21:31It's Ron LaFleur as they come around again. Ron bounced the shorts up his first time up.
- 21:37LaFleur straight away on him. Alexander holds it at the belt. Now there's a low fastball to Ron, ball one.
- 21:56Harrah is a little deeper now at third. He's gone back a step or so, a little bit over near the line.
- 22:02Set and the pitch, he takes the ball in close. That was a fastball, two and oh, the count on LaFleur.
- 22:22Now the motion, the pitch on the way, it's in too close and low. Ball three on Ron.
- 22:32One nothing to short of a Texas second inning. Now the set by Alexander, he delivers.
- 22:39Strike call right over the plate. Still daylight down here in Texas.
- 22:54Flip over to first base, he's back in time. Alexander ready again. The run goes.
- 23:05The ball is swung on, hit up the middle, there goes Pomp Wales over to grab it, throw it at first, he got him.
- 23:10And the side retired. No runs, one hit, no errors and one man left.
- 23:14And at the end of one and one half innings, Tigers won, Rangers nothing.
- 23:20It's up to you to keep the rally going in the LaBatch Baseball Trivia Game.
- 23:25See if he can get on base with this one. Who was the last American leaguer to win the Triple Crown?
- 23:32Take a little time and think it over and relax with a cool, refreshing LaBatch beer.
- 23:45The answer, Carl Yastremski of the Boston Red Sox in 1967.
- 23:51Yaz hit.326 with 44 home runs and 121 RBIs.
- 23:57Great baseball calls for great beer. LaBatch. Call for LaBatch.
- 24:02Brewed in Canada since 1828. Distributed by LaBatch Importers Incorporated, Buffalo, New York.
- 24:09LaBatch Blue is available in selected markets throughout Michigan.
- 24:26Well, here's a hand for Willie Horton, the former Tiger coming to bat.
- 24:30Willie has won himself a lot of new friends down here in Texas.
- 24:35Stepping in the face is former teammate Dave Rosema.
- 24:45Will Betting,.315. He takes a strike call. Rosema gave him a breaking ball.
- 24:52Horton has eight home runs and 17 RBIs.
- 25:01Outfield deep got up down the way. Here's the pitch to him.
- 25:04He swings and pops the foul. It'll be out of play, back of the plate.
- 25:07That's the foul. It's the station identification. This is the Detroit Tiger baseball net bird.
- 25:12Look for partly cloudy weather tonight with some widely scattered showers, low temperature near 60.
- 25:17Wednesday and Thursday partly sunny and continued warm high in the upper 80s.
- 25:22Right now partly cloudy and 82. You're listening to WJR Detroit.
- 25:29Horton stepping back in now. Two strikes to count on him.
- 25:32Rosema gets his sign from Milton A. And goes into the motion. Delivers. Here's the ball outside.
- 25:40John McGuire, big Tigers fan from Flint out here at the ball game, trying to root the Tigers in this evening.
- 25:48Sending special regards back to Pete Stark. Here's the pitch. It's a ball missed the inside corner.
- 25:56And all of us with the Tigers would like to send a special birthday greeting to Mr. Lou Matlin, promotional director of the Tigers.
- 26:08Here's the motion and the 2-2 pitch. He swings on the bounding ball to third.
- 26:11Mankowski backed up deep. Has it long, Felted Thompson. Got him. One up and one away.
- 26:18Tom Greave, the Michigan product, coming up now.
- 26:24Well, it was the injury to Tom Greave that actually got Willie Horton in the lineup down here when he first came down.
- 26:30Tom had been the designated batter. He got on the disabled list.
- 26:35So Casey told us that he had told Willie that he probably wouldn't be able to play very much.
- 26:41Now then, because of the injuries, Will got in there and did the job.
- 26:45Greave hitting 184. He takes a changeup over first strike.
- 26:52As he's certainly doing the job, he leads the team in RBIs. He's hitting 318 for Texas.
- 27:01Tom runs in one game. There's a check swing, I believe, that Clark ruled out a ball. I'm not sure.
- 27:07Let's see. The scoreboard goes up with strike two.
- 27:11The ball pops out of the mid of Milton A. And Mr. Clark will dust off the plate.
- 27:17Interestingly enough, Willie hit those homers on Sunday when he was playing left field.
- 27:23The only time he played in the outfield for Texas.
- 27:26Then after three of them, they took him out.
- 27:29He said apparently he has to come out.
- 27:32It's a slow curve outside. We'll make it a one-two count.
- 27:35Now apparently that's what happened, that other one with the strike.
- 27:38One and two, the count on Greave.
- 27:41One-nothing Tigers lead them in the second inning at Texas.
- 27:46Rose delivers, low and away. Two-two, the count on him now.
- 27:54Now Rose, we're going back up the mound to rub up that baseball a little bit.
- 27:58Apparently, Dave doesn't take much time between pitches.
- 28:03Now up on the hill to get his sign, go to work again, the two-two delivery.
- 28:08It is a strike called, he struck him out.
- 28:10That's the second strikeout recorded by Rosema.
- 28:13And both on call third strike.
- 28:15Toby Harrah coming to bat now.
- 28:19Overheating for number one.
- 28:21Toby, zero.
- 28:22Toby, not only spells his name the same way backwards and forwards,
- 28:26you can work his numeral the same way, too.
- 28:29Number 11.
- 28:33Two out, nobody on.
- 28:38Harrah batting 282, slices one in the right center.
- 28:41There goes LaFleur over.
- 28:42He's got it, and they side out one, two, three.
- 28:45He's the inning for Rosema.
- 28:47At the end of two, it's the Tigers one, Texas nothing.

- 29:51If you're looking for a reason to slow down and take a mid-morning break, I have several, including the crew from Studio B, Great Music, and much more.
- 30:00I'm Jimmy Lantz.
- 30:01Join me at 10 on WJR.
- 30:03Tigers coming to bat now.
- 30:10They've got one run, three hits.
- 30:11The Rangers, no runs and two hits.
- 30:13We've gone to two innings here in Texas.
- 30:16And it'll be Tito for Witte, the lead off for the Tigers.
- 30:20He scored the game's only run.
- 30:22He singled in the first with one out, took the second on the walk, and came home on a single by Kemp.
- 30:28So that's the early story in Texas.
- 30:32And here's Tito standing in, batting left-handed.
- 30:38He'll be followed by Mankowski and then Oglebay.
- 30:43Outfield to left on Witte.
- 30:46He's bundled his way on the first time.
- 30:48There's a strike called.
- 30:55Third baseman, Harrah, in close at third, about even with the base.
- 31:01There's a ball in too close, one and one to count on for Witte.
- 31:06Still a breezy evening down in Texas.
- 31:14Now the motion of the pitch, swing and a pop-up near the plate.
- 31:19Sunberg out in front calling for it, has it?
- 31:23About five feet in front of the plate.
- 31:27The Witte's is out and Mankowski who walked the first time will be the batter.
- 31:35He'll fouled off a couple of pitches before he earned that walk from Alexander.
- 31:42His fine hitting has been rewarded by moving him up to number three,
- 31:46of course that's partly due to the fact the stop is out of action.
- 31:50They've been timing the pitches here.
- 31:52Alexander 84 miles per hour, Rosema 82 miles per hour.
- 31:58There's a ball.
- 32:00They don't have any speed limit on those either.
- 32:02That 55 miles per hour doesn't go.
- 32:10Here's the wind up and the pitch.
- 32:12He swings and misses.
- 32:13That was a bad pitch, one and one.
- 32:16I don't know where the man is.
- 32:17He's doing the timing.
- 32:18Do you fault?
- 32:19Is it the upstairs or down the hall?
- 32:20I think right.
- 32:21Yeah, I think it's just down to our right here.
- 32:22On the same level we are, upstairs.
- 32:26There's a fly ball lifted out of play to left field.
- 32:29Foul back in the seat.
- 32:33Young lady not looking, walking down the aisle, and that one almost got her.
- 32:39One and two, the Kata Mankowski.
- 32:47Here it comes.
- 32:48He swings to the bounding ball, deep first.
- 32:49Hargrove makes the play all by himself, and they are two Tigers out.
- 32:53Oglebay, who fanned his first trip, steps up now for time number two.
- 32:59Let's take a quick look at some of the scores now.
- 33:05Many of the games ahead of us.
- 33:07Colorado, Milwaukee, nothing, nothing at the end of one.
- 33:09Cleveland leads Minnesota 2-0 in the second.
- 33:12Oakland leads.
- 33:13Oh, and New York beat Oakland 5-2 in 16 innings this afternoon.
- 33:18That takes care of the American League.
- 33:20Other games not underway.
- 33:22There's a swing, and I believe that Sunberg was hit by the bat.
- 33:26He has gone down on his back.
- 33:28Luke Casey is coming out there, and the trainer, Dick Martin, has come out also,
- 33:33and Sunberg seems to be hurt.
- 33:35I think it was the back swing, Ernie.
- 33:38In other words, Benji followed through with that vicious cut of his.
- 33:43The bat just came all the way around and hit Sunberg on the head.
- 33:47I really can't tell, but the way he reacted, that had to be touching the right side of his head.
- 33:55It's the right temple of Sunberg now.
- 33:59Luke Casey down there, working at the helmet, it's a partial helmet,
- 34:06has just kind of a little beanie-type helmet that the catchers use.
- 34:14The trainer, Bill Ziegler, administering to him right now.
- 34:18I think the team doctor has come out too.
- 34:21There's Dr. Makoski.
- 34:27He's taking a look at Sunberg.
- 34:29Sunberg is conscious.
- 34:35He is feeling himself, his temple, trying to point out exactly where he was hit.
- 34:41So I don't know whether he lost consciousness or not, but he went down very, very quickly,
- 34:45and is still on his back, right behind the plate.
- 34:49Now he's being helped up.
- 34:53He's in a sitting position right now.
- 34:57I would imagine that there are a lot of little planets and stars appearing before the eyes right now.
- 35:06Fine young catcher in Jim Sunberg.
- 35:09Well, we may get a new catcher here too.
- 35:11I saw Luke Casey signal over toward the bullpen.
- 35:15Bill Fahey is the normal replacement for Sunberg.
- 35:21He's still sitting propped behind the plate.
- 35:26I don't think they want to bring him up too quickly here.
- 35:28They may call for a stretcher, someone that's racing around on the dugout.
- 35:39The only thing I can explain is because, of course, we don't have the advantage of a reprise of instant replay,
- 35:49that it appears that the backswing of Benji's swing hit Sunberg on the right temple with a bat.
- 35:58Now he's being carried off now.
- 36:00Luke Casey and trainer Bill Ziegler helping him off along with a team position,
- 36:04and we're waiting for another catcher to make his appearance here.
- 36:11In the meantime, Doyle Alexander continues to loosen up out of the mound.
- 36:15He's taking care of the first two Tigers here in the third inning.
- 36:20Although they have the plate, Benji over by the on-deck circle now.
- 36:24He has a one-strike count on him, and it will be Fahey coming in to replace Sunberg.
- 36:30They'll give him a couple of warm-up catches and perhaps a throw.
- 36:35Yeah, he's going to throw down the first base just to loosen up a little bit.
- 36:39Bill has been down on the bullpen for the Rangers, so he's coming in to replace Sunberg here in the third inning with two outs and nobody on board.
- 36:49Ernie?
- 36:50I was talking to Bill before the ballgame.
- 36:52He's a young man from Detroit.
- 36:55He wanted to send greetings back to his folks.
- 36:58He's in the ballgame now, replacing the injured Jim Sunberg.
- 37:04As soon as we get some kind of a report on Sunberg, we'll pass it right along to him.
- 37:10Although they have the plate, the counties strike one on Benji.
- 37:14They are two out of the third. The Tigers lead Texas one to nothing.
- 37:20Doyle Alexander, the right-hander, ready to go to work for the Rangers again.
- 37:25And he delivers. Benji takes the ball outside.
- 37:32Outfield deep, a little bit to right on him, not much, and field back.
- 37:36Waiting on a 1-1 delivery. Here it comes. He swings and misses. That was a change-up.
- 37:411-2, the count of Oglebay.
- 37:51Next batter will be Steve Kemp, who knocked in the game's only run.
- 37:55Ben takes a high, hard one.
- 37:58Two balls and two strikes, two outs.
- 38:00Tigers lead one to nothing in the third inning in Texas.
- 38:07Alexander checks his time with the catcher, Fahey, and delivers.
- 38:10There's a cut on the miss. He struck him out.
- 38:14The Tigers go down 1-2-3 in their third inning.
- 38:18We go to the last half. The third is Detroit, one and Texas nothing.
- 38:23And Bob McDaniel goes to work at a catcracker at the Marathon to find me in Robinson, Illinois.
- 38:29He doesn't work alone. He gets together with Eldon Keefe, Mason, and Berner Ferguson.
- 38:34And together they go about the business of turning heavy oils into gasoline and fuel.
- 38:39Bob McDaniel could work alone.
- 38:41The job wouldn't get done as well for at all without the help of Eldon, Keefe, and Berner.
- 38:46Because each of them brings something special to the job.
- 38:49They get together to do it better.
- 38:52A company is like its people, because it is people.
- 38:55When Marathon found oil, our oil people got together with some pipeline people,
- 39:00we got together with some refining people, we got together with some service station people,
- 39:05so we can do it better.
- 39:07We got together to do it better.
- 39:14We are Marathon.
- 39:20Marathon Oil Company, we got together to do it better.
- 39:35Well, Mr. Rosner ready to go to work.
- 39:37And the third against Texas, he's cut down the first six range of batters in the opening two meetings.
- 39:43It'll be Bob Wells, the switch batter to lead off against him, Bob playing second base.
- 39:49He's batting 282.
- 39:52He'll be batting left-handed against Rosmer.
- 40:11He pitches in close, ball on.
- 40:24There's a strike call.
- 40:25He ran up as if to bunt.
- 40:29One-and-one they count on him.
- 40:38So second and road home on a double by Washington.
- 40:42Now Bert Campanaris, in the foot take, called third, strike his first,
- 40:46steps in again.
- 40:56I feel not deep there straight away on Campy.
- 41:00Washington coming off the back, pretty good-sized lead for Claudel.
- 41:04And Campanaris takes a curve very wide, low and away.
- 41:14One-one, the game tied down to third.
- 41:22Hargrove waits on deck.
- 41:24Here's Rosner's deck delivery to Campanaris.
- 41:26He takes the ball low, over the play from low.
- 41:42Just about dark now down here in Texas, 8.27 Texas time.
- 41:47Rosmer's ready, delivers.
- 41:49Chopper hits foul on the ground over toward the box seat.
- 41:57One run free, it's no errors for Detroit.
- 41:59The Rangers have one run, one hit, and no errors.
- 42:02We're in the third inning at Arlington Stadium.
- 42:05This is the first of a two-game set down here.
- 42:08Tomorrow night we'll see John Hiller make a start against Gaylord Perry.
- 42:15Now the step by Rosmer, the 2-1 pitch all the way, run to go,
- 42:19sit there, throw by May, is quiet in the upfield,
- 42:22and another run will score.
- 42:23Washington comes home.
- 42:25May threw the ball wide past Mankowski.
- 42:29And the run scores to make it 2-1.
- 42:34It'll be a stolen base and then an error charged to Milt May.
- 42:40Washington feels third and comes home on the error
- 42:44by the catcher Milt May who overthrew Mankowski at third.
- 42:49And Texas is gone in front in a hurry, 2-1 in the third inning.
- 42:57Three balls and one strike on Caponari.
- 42:59He bumps and bows the ball back at a plate.
- 43:03An unusual maneuver, bunting with a 3-1 count.
- 43:08Mankowski's still deep over there at third.
- 43:16Rosmer checks his sign, full count delivery.
- 43:20Swung on a bounding ball to third.
- 43:21Good stop by Mankowski.
- 43:22Throw to Thompson, got him, and the side retires.
- 43:26But there's been ranger damage.
- 43:28They picked up a couple two runs on one hit,
- 43:31a walk, a stolen base, and an error, and nobody left on the bases.
- 43:35At the end of three, Rangers 2, the Tigers 1.

- 44:47TIGERS SCORED FIRST IN THIS GAME.
- 45:00THEY GOT A RUN ON A SINGLE BY KEMP OF THE FIRST ENDING,
- 45:02BUT THE RANGERS WERE TWO OUT AND NOBODY ON.
- 45:04CAME BACK ON THE THIRD.
- 45:06WALKED TO BANICUS, HE STOLE SECOND.
- 45:08CAME HOME ON A DOUBLE BY WASHINGTON.
- 45:09WASHINGTON STOLE THIRD AND WENT HOME
- 45:11WHEN MAY THREW THE BALL IN THE OUTFIELD.
- 45:13SO IT'S TWO TO ONE RANGERS.
- 45:15LET'S GO TO THE FOURTH NOW AND TUNE IN ON PAUL CARRING.
- 45:19All right, Ernie, thank you very much.
- 45:21Steve Kemp to lead it off for the Tigers
- 45:23here on the fourth inning against Doyle Alexander.
- 45:25Kemp drove in the Tiger run in the first inning with a single.
- 45:28He butt foul behind the plate.
- 45:31Steve trying to catch Harrah sitting a little deep there
- 45:34back at third base.
- 45:37Harrah at third, Kemp and Harris at second.
- 45:40At short rather, Wills at second and Hargrove at first.
- 45:43For the Rangers, in left field,
- 45:45Claudell Washington at the Banicus in center
- 45:47and Grieve in right.
- 45:49Bill Fahey replacing the injured Jim Sundberg
- 45:51working behind the plate.
- 45:55Doyle Alexander on the mound.
- 45:57He's struck out two, walked one.
- 45:59The pitch to Kemp swung on, a bounce at a third.
- 46:01Harrah picks up the skimmer, throws to first and got him.
- 46:04One up and one away in the Tigers' fourth inning.
- 46:10That'll bring up Jason Thompson.
- 46:12Jason ended the first inning by grounding out the Wills at second.
- 46:16Let's pause now for station identification.
- 46:20This is the Detroit Tiger Baseball Network.
- 46:22The weather for Greater Detroit partly cloudy tonight.
- 46:25Some widely scattered showers, low near 60.
- 46:28Tomorrow and Thursday, partly sunny, continued warm, high upper 80s.
- 46:32At 931, it's cloudy and 77.
- 46:35This is WJR Detroit.
- 46:38Thompson bounced one over the mound
- 46:40that could not be handled by Alexander.
- 46:43And at shortstop, Campanaris came in, made a dive,
- 46:46Ford picked it up and then fell as he tried to throw the first base.
- 46:50And Thompson is awarded an infield single.
- 46:52So Jason reaches first with one down here in the Tiger fourth inning.
- 46:58Here's Milt May.
- 47:00The Tigers now have four hits.
- 47:01They've all been singles.
- 47:02One an infield single, the other a bump single of the four hits.
- 47:07Milt grounded out the short his first time up.
- 47:13Got a five-game hit streak going.
- 47:16Thompson at first with a short lead.
- 47:18Infield and outfield both about straight up on the left-hand hitting May.
- 47:22It's outside and low, ball one.
- 47:26Alexander with four wins and one defeat so far this season.
- 47:30In his first year as a Texas Ranger.
- 47:36Into the stretch.
- 47:38The pitch to the plate Thompson goes.
- 47:40It's bounced to the right side.
- 47:41Milt has only one play.
- 47:42That's at first.
- 47:43So May gets the ball to the right side as they sent Thompson.
- 47:46And Jason has moved into scoring position at second base.
- 47:49But there are two out now and it's up to the Tigers designated batter for the night.
- 47:54John Wachenfuss.
- 47:56Rusty Stomp out of action missing his first game of the season.
- 48:00He had played in every one of the Tiger games, this being game number 33.
- 48:05Rusty had been the DH in the first 32 games.
- 48:11Wachenfuss batting now as the DH in the number eight spot in the batting order.
- 48:16Stomp with an injured side setting this one up.
- 48:22Thompson at second two down.
- 48:24The pitch from Alexander.
- 48:25It's in the dirt.
- 48:26Today he blocks it, keeps it in front of him.
- 48:38John lined out to Washington and left his first time up.
- 48:46Last two games in which he's appeared, Wachenfuss has gone two for four.
- 48:53Here's the set.
- 48:54And the pitch to Johnny B. He takes the strike on the outside corner.
- 49:03Very stiff wind blowing in from center field here tonight.
- 49:09Always the wind in Texas.
- 49:15Now Alexander looks back at second.
- 49:17The pitch to the plate.
- 49:19Check swing but it's a strike on Wachenfuss.
- 49:26Tigers got a run in the first inning on Kemp single to right.
- 49:29What is it reached with a one-off front single moved to second when Mankowski walked.
- 49:35And then Kemp singled with two-offs to get the Tiger run home.
- 49:38The Rangers picking up two runs in the third inning to take their two-to-one lead.
- 49:42The pitch to Wachenfuss is in the dirt.
- 49:46All two strike two.
- 49:48Throughout the walk to Benekus he stole second and scored on the double into the right field corner by Claudel Washington.
- 49:54Washington then stole third and continued on in when May's throw went over the glove of Mankowski into left field for an error.
- 50:06Two balls, two strikes on Wachenfuss, two down.
- 50:08A man in second.
- 50:11The look at Thompson.
- 50:13And the pitch to Futs.
- 50:14He swings and pops a foul down the right field line back in the Z.
- 50:18Stop getting around on that pitch from Alexander.
- 50:28A reminder we'll be broadcasting the exhibition game from Cincinnati on Thursday evening.
- 50:33It's an early starter, the Sandlot Benefit exhibition game.
- 50:36It gets underway at 7 o'clock and there will be a pregame program, the award-winning Ernie Harwell pregame show will be heard at 6.45.
- 50:48Here's the set, the pitch to Wachenfuss.
- 50:50Jack swinging it, blowing away.
- 50:52Full count on John.
- 50:55He was tempted but he held off.
- 50:58Tigers actually just making a quick stop in Cincinnati to play that exhibition contest, it's a little detour on their flight from Dallas to Chicago for a weekend series with the White Sox.
- 51:13Here's the three-two pitch to Wachenfuss.
- 51:16He swings and misses, stuck him out.
- 51:19That ends the Tigers thread on the fourth inning, no runs, one hit, no errors and one man left.
- 51:24Here come the Rangers to bat in their half of the fourth.
- 51:27Texas 2, Detroit 1.
- 51:32They're batting in the cleanup spot in the LeBats baseball trivia game.
- 51:36And here's the pitch.
- 51:38Name the pitcher who hurled a perfect game for 12 innings but lost the game 1-0 in the 13th.
- 51:46Take a break and think about it over a cool LeBats beer.
- 51:50It was Harvey Haddix of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 52:00The heartbreaking loss came on an error, a sacrifice, and Joe Adcock's double as the Braves sunk the Buccos.
- 52:08Great baseball calls for great beer.
- 52:11LeBats.
- 52:12Call for LeBats.
- 52:14Brewed in Canada since 1828.
- 52:17Distributed by LeBat Importers, Inc., Buffalo, New York.
- 52:20The Bats Blue is available in selected markets throughout Michigan.
- 52:38Dave Rosemont on the mob to face the Texas Rangers here in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 52:42It'll be Mike Hargrove deleted off.
- 52:45Mike lined out to Ogilvy, his first time up.
- 52:48Good hitter.
- 52:49He's again hitting above the 300 mark this year.
- 52:56Hargrove.
- 53:01That's a moment hitting 307 as he steps in.
- 53:04He'll be followed by Horton and Grieve.
- 53:11The top field actually shaped him a little to left while the infield plays into the right side.
- 53:18Rosemont struck out three, walked one.
- 53:20That walk hurt him with two out on a third inning and set up a two-run burst by the Rangers.
- 53:25First pitch is low for ball one.
- 53:35A 20-year-old right-hander into the motion that fits through Hargrove. It jams him inside ball two.
- 53:44Two home runs, 12 RBIs this season for Mike.
- 53:50American Lakes Rookie of the Year in 1974.
- 53:54Rosemont delivers a called strike.
- 53:58John Hiller to get his first start of the season.
- 54:01Tomorrow night against the veteran Gaylord Perry who's seeking to become the third pitcher in the history of baseball to win 100 games in each league.
- 54:11He's one away.
- 54:13The pitch is long on a bouncer to the right side.
- 54:14Thompson charges as the big hop makes the play unassisted at first base.
- 54:18Hargrove is retired, bouncing out to first.
- 54:22That'll bring up Willie Horton and again met by a round of cheers here at Arlington Stadium.
- 54:35In his first trip tonight, Horton bounced out to Mankowski of third.
- 54:44Willie the Wonder.
- 54:47Rosemont delivers. There's a pop-up towards third. Mankowski is calling for it.
- 54:52Now he's drifting into fourth territory.
- 54:54Makes the catch.
- 54:55Horton, you're in the first.
- 54:56Now Mankowski to knock.
- 54:58Well the base is empty.
- 54:59Number four batter will be Tom Greave.
- 55:02Interestingly enough, talking with young Dave Rosemont out of spring training when he was a non-rooster, Richard,
- 55:11he recalls the days he used to come down to Detroit and reached Willie to have the lead.
- 55:18Tom and Norman, an action of the man of the second place, his favorite was Willie Horton.
- 55:24The pitch outside for a ball.
- 55:27Greave struck out taking a charge third strike in the second inning.
- 55:34The former has not really had a bad ball game yet. And this is rookie year.
- 55:41One on the clock for the third.

- 57:13Here come the Tigers to bat on the fifth running.
- 57:15Tigers have four hits.
- 57:16The Rangers have only one hit off Dave Rosemont, but the Rangers lead it two to one.
- 57:21Tigers four hits scattered a bit. They managed to get two hits in a walk in the first inning.
- 57:26Off-doyle Alexander and that accounted for their one run, the RBI single by Steve Kemp.
- 57:31Here's Mark Wagner, who's singled with two down in the second inning.
- 57:35He takes a ball outside, ball one on Park.
- 57:42LaFleur and Fuentes will follow here in the Tiger fifth inning.
- 57:46The right-hander Alexander kicks the Tigers on the corner for a strike.
- 57:55The Rangers acquired Alexander as a pre-agent in November of last year.
- 58:01Dodgers head has the side. The one-one picked Wagner outside for a ball.
- 58:07Working with both Baltimore and New York last year, Alexander won 13 and lost nine.
- 58:13He picked two shutouts against the Tigers.
- 58:19His windup and the two-one pick.
- 58:21Ground ball to first.
- 58:22Dodger has it, will make the play unassisted.
- 58:25Wagner is retired, he'll make the opening out number one.
- 58:30That will bring up round the floor.
- 58:32Hitler's in two-trips against Dodger, against Alexander.
- 58:36He's bounced off the short end of second.
- 58:46Alexander picks three, weight one to 95, looking in, getting the sign from Bill Fahey.
- 58:52Takes the shoulders a little bit, now winds and delivers.
- 58:56Strike called on line.
- 58:59Alexander stands three on route three.
- 59:09Now the pitch, it's low.
- 59:12Ground on the strike on the floor.
- 59:18Now since this franchise moved from Washington, the Rangers have had great success against the Tigers.
- 59:25Alexander whirls and delivers a bounce-your-bow on the left side.
- 59:29That's the Tigers, the only team in the Eastern Division of the league that the Rangers have a winning record against.
- 59:40They met once before this season, and that's the game that the Tigers fans and the Tigers themselves would like to forget.
- 59:4613 to zip, Texas.
- 59:50One-two count on the floor, went out, nobody on.
- 59:54High, ball two.
- 59:57The Rangers lead two to one here in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:00:09Now they two-two pitch, ball three outside.
- 1:00:14Well, those cubbies have really been hot in Chicago.
- 1:00:17They're surprising everybody, and what a day they had today against the San Diego Padres.
- 1:00:23Twenty-three runs, twenty-four hits, winning a game 23 to 6.
- 1:00:30A pitch to the floor.
- 1:00:31He swings late and fouls that one off the handle back into the seat.
- 1:00:39He has barely got a piece of that one.
- 1:00:43Ron is up front of the plate, really, and punches that ball right through.
- 1:00:48He's usually coming around a bit late, looks at the ball a lot longer than most.
- 1:00:52The pitch to him, swung on, and punched foul to the right side again, back up into the seat.
- 1:01:02The floor hitting 239 at the moment.
- 1:01:06Ron not off to the good start that he had last year.
- 1:01:09As a result, his stolen base total is considerably down this season.
- 1:01:13He just simply hasn't been on base as much.
- 1:01:17Here's the three-two pitch to him.
- 1:01:20Ground ball to second.
- 1:01:21Wills has the middle hop, with throw to first, gets the floor two down in the Tiger fifth inning.
- 1:01:31Here's Tito Palentiz.
- 1:01:34Tito laid down one of those nifty punts of his.
- 1:01:37With a left-hand batter, he has shown good bat control.
- 1:01:43Just pokes it past the charging third baseman until they hold it short,
- 1:01:47and he has picked up several front hits that way this season.
- 1:01:52One for two tonight for Tito.
- 1:01:54Bases empty, two down, top of the fifth inning.
- 1:01:58The pitch from Doyle Alexander.
- 1:02:00It is in the dirt for ball one.
- 1:02:03Alexander, now 26 years old.
- 1:02:06He's been around though.
- 1:02:10Originally in the Dodger system.
- 1:02:15The pitch to Palentiz.
- 1:02:16Long Adam, off to third.
- 1:02:18A high hopper for Herra.
- 1:02:19Across the diamond is plenty of time to get Palentiz.
- 1:02:21The Tigers go down one, two, three on the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:02:24And here come the Rangers to bat.
- 1:02:26They lead it, Texas two, Detroit one.
- 1:02:30You, it's Norman, the Detroit News Boy.
- 1:02:32Anybody home?
- 1:02:33Out here.
- 1:02:34I'm cleaning the garage.

- 1:02:36I see you're cleaning the garage.

- 1:02:42Anyway, I've got a swell idea on how to get rid of all this stuff in the garage.
- 1:02:44Oh yeah?

- 1:03:27It's a way to sell almost anything for next to nothing.
- 1:03:40It's the last of the fifth inning here at windblown Arlington Stadium in Texas.
- 1:03:45Located about halfway between Fort Worth and Dallas.
- 1:03:49On the Fort Worth Dallas turnpike that makes sense.
- 1:03:55Arlington is basically a community of industrial warehouses and buildings and homes.
- 1:04:05Downtown Arlington doesn't really exist.
- 1:04:12Ready to go on the bottom of the fifth inning, Toby Herra leading it off and he takes the strike.
- 1:04:17Dave Rosemont is pitched very well, but he made one slip in the third inning when he walked Juan Beníquez.
- 1:04:23And that hearted him as he stole second, scored on the double by Washington, who later stole third and came home on the air by May.
- 1:04:30Bouncer off the end of the bat to first.
- 1:04:32Thompson near the bag, feels it, and touches the bag to retire Herra.
- 1:04:36Easy play for Thompson as Toby just hit that one off the edge of the bat.
- 1:04:44That'll bring up Bump Wills, a switch hitter batting left-handed against Rosemont, son of Maury.
- 1:04:52Wills hitting 258 left-handed, 324 right-handed.
- 1:04:59Batting average of 279 overall, he lined up to the floor his first time up.
- 1:05:04The wind up by Rosemont, the pitch to him is taken for a strike.
- 1:05:08Mankowski is coming in very tight at third base.
- 1:05:11He's suspecting perhaps Wills could lay something down.
- 1:05:14He doesn't have the blazing speed his dad has, but strike two called.
- 1:05:20But he can run, he's already picked up five steals this year.
- 1:05:31A wind up by Rosemont, one up, nobody on.
- 1:05:33Outside for a ball, one and two.
- 1:05:37Rangers wearing an extra dark stripe on their left sleeve in memory of their teammate Danny Thompson who passed away during the offseason.
- 1:05:49Low in the dirt for a ball, two and two to Wills.
- 1:05:58One out, base is empty.
- 1:06:00Here in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Rangers have a two-to-one edge over the Tigers, although they have just one hit off Rosemont.
- 1:06:06It's a ball outside.
- 1:06:07He had him two strikes and now has missed with three straight.
- 1:06:10It's a full count now on Wills.
- 1:06:20The pitch from Rosemont, flung out and popped foul.
- 1:06:23Look at some of those National League scores.
- 1:06:25Four games going now.
- 1:06:27The Dodgers lead the Phillies four to three after sixth inning.
- 1:06:31Atlanta up on Montreal three to nothing after four.
- 1:06:34Pittsburgh and Cincinnati scoreless in the sixth inning.
- 1:06:38And after four innings, it's the Mets and the Giants, no score.
- 1:06:45And here at Arlington, Texas, two to one, the Rangers lead the Tigers.
- 1:06:54Rosemont looking in, getting his sign again from May.
- 1:06:56The motion's a three-two pitch.
- 1:06:58Ground ball up the middle, into center field, a base hit.
- 1:07:02Out of the reach to Pallantes, Wills takes a big turn.
- 1:07:06Just to the left of Rosemont and snuck by Pallantes out into right-center field.
- 1:07:13Wills has only the second hit of the game off Rosemont.
- 1:07:15It comes with one down here in the fifth inning.
- 1:07:21Catcher Bill Fahey.
- 1:07:23Here's Bill Fahey, who had to be inserted into the lineup when Jim Sundberg was injured by a bat,
- 1:07:31swing of the bat by Ben Ogilvy in the third inning.
- 1:07:36Fahey one time up against Rosemont, struck out swinging.
- 1:07:39Here's the set.
- 1:07:40Wills goes.
- 1:07:41It's a pitch out.
- 1:07:42The bat's thrown at it.
- 1:07:43The throw to second.
- 1:07:44He is out at second base.
- 1:07:45The Tigers cut him down.
- 1:07:46Good throw by Milt May, who had made two four-throws earlier.
- 1:07:51And this time they cut down Bump Wills.
- 1:07:53He's been crossed for the fourth time this year.
- 1:07:56So there are two down.
- 1:07:57Fahey tried to help Wills.
- 1:07:59He threw the bat at the ball and missed it.
- 1:08:06One strike out, bare motor, the base is empty and two down.
- 1:08:17Putt out was made by Mark Wagner on the steal attempt at second as they foul into the dirt of the plate.
- 1:08:29Rosemont in to get a new baseball and certainly didn't like the finish when he got from Alan Clark.
- 1:08:35Had a word with Al.
- 1:08:38Jerry Newdekner working at first tonight.
- 1:08:39Our front's at second and Nick Remagen at third.
- 1:08:47The class second baseman of another generation, just the last generation, Connie Ryan.
- 1:08:53Coaching down at third for the Rangers.
- 1:08:55Brett Koenig at first.
- 1:08:57The pitch to the plate.
- 1:08:58Swung on and bounced foul over toward the Ranger dugout.
- 1:09:10This is apparently grand prairie night here at Arlington Stadium.
- 1:09:14The wind ups the pitch.
- 1:09:16Fahey takes outside.
- 1:09:17A ball and two strikes on Bill.
- 1:09:26From Redford Union High School, Bill Fahey, he swings, bounces one to Thompson.
- 1:09:31Thompson races to the bag and makes the play unassisted at first and retires the Rangers in the fifth inning.
- 1:09:36No runs, a hit, no errors, nobody left after five.
- 1:09:39It's Texas 2, Detroit 1.
- 1:09:43We're America Shops.

- 1:10:01Here's Phil Mankowski to lead off the sixth inning for the Tigers who trail the Rangers 2-1.
- 1:10:06Phil is a walk in the bounce out tonight.
- 1:10:09The first pitch from the right-hander Alexander, swung on and hit high on the air to right field.
- 1:10:13Grieve is under it, waiting.
- 1:10:16And Tom puts it away.
- 1:10:19Mankowski at the towering fly ball to short right for out number one.
- 1:10:25That'll bring up Odlevey.
- 1:10:27Benji is playing to fight a very bad bruise on the upper right arm.
- 1:10:37Benji went with traveling secretary, Ben Desmond, to the hospital in Milwaukee after being hit by that thrown pitch
- 1:10:44on the sixth inning of the night cap Sunday afternoon.
- 1:10:47X-rays were negative, but his arm was extremely sore.
- 1:10:52And still it is.
- 1:10:53Strike called on Benji.
- 1:11:02He couldn't even lift the right arm to eat after the game.
- 1:11:06He was back on the Tiger locker room.
- 1:11:08The Tigers cleared up ready to go here.
- 1:11:10Strike two called on Odlevey.
- 1:11:16That's a good thinking fastball low and inside to Odlevey.
- 1:11:22One out, nobody on top of the sixth inning.
- 1:11:25Alexander has been tough.
- 1:11:27Here's the pitch to Odlevey.
- 1:11:29Just outside, he didn't miss by much.
- 1:11:36Tigers with four singles by Bledis, Kemp, Wagner, and Thompson.
- 1:11:45Now they one-two pitch to Odlevey.
- 1:11:47Swung on and missed.
- 1:11:48That one up around the middle of the helmet.
- 1:11:51And he has gone down on strikes three times.
- 1:11:57Alexander with his fourth strikeout.
- 1:11:59That'll bring up Kemp now with two down and nobody aboard.
- 1:12:11Odlevey members of the Texas press talking with Steve Foucault before the ballgame.
- 1:12:16Their first opportunity to talk with Steve since he was traded away to the Tigers for Willie Horton.
- 1:12:23There's a pitch to Kemp.
- 1:12:24He swings.
- 1:12:25There's a base hit in the right center field beyond Wills.
- 1:12:28So Kemp is two for three tonight, has two of the Tiger hits, takes a big turn,
- 1:12:32and the ball is finally fed back into Wills.
- 1:12:38Five singles for the Tigers now with a two-out single here in the sixth by Kemp.
- 1:12:43That'll bring up Jason Thompson.
- 1:12:50The wind seems to have changed direction a little bit now.
- 1:12:53Checking the pennants, the flags out on the center field flagpole.
- 1:12:58Blowing a little in from right center.
- 1:12:59As Ernie pointed out earlier, they traditionally,
- 1:13:04there's a wind that blows in from right field here at Arlington Stadium.
- 1:13:09Set by Alexander, the pitch to Thompson, it's blown away, ball one.
- 1:13:14But it's a swirling wind, too.
- 1:13:16There's always a wind here.
- 1:13:18But it blows in toward the plate, generally speaking,
- 1:13:21and has made it park with its uniform fence anyway at tough home run park.
- 1:13:27Jeff Burroughs noting he was happy to move to Atlanta from that, in that regard.
- 1:13:33He moved to first, but Kemp gets backhand first.
- 1:13:37And Burroughs tonight in another home run for Atlanta, his ninth of the year for the Plays.
- 1:13:44Here's the set now by Alexander, the pitch to the plate.
- 1:13:46Swung on, a drive to center field.
- 1:13:48On the run is Benekis still going.
- 1:13:50He makes the catch and races against the wall.
- 1:13:53A long drive to deep right center field by Jason Thompson.
- 1:13:57Hauled in by Juan Benekis, the center fielder, retired the Tigers.
- 1:14:01No runs, one hit, no errors, and one left.
- 1:14:04After five and a half innings, it's the Rangers, too, and the Tigers, one.
- 1:14:10Getting oil out of the ground is one thing.
- 1:14:13Turning it into something people can use is another.
- 1:14:16It takes a lot of people with different skills and different talents to get that job done.
- 1:14:21We got people together, we thought to do it better, and we called the company Marathon.
- 1:14:28From the driller in Alaska, to the route about in Chester,
- 1:14:36from the driver in Atlanta, to the welder in Wyoming.
- 1:14:44When we found oil, we could have left the rest of the jobs to somebody else.
- 1:14:48But we had this idea that we could do it better.
- 1:14:51So we got people together who thought the same way we did.
- 1:14:55We got together to do it better.
- 1:14:59We're Marathon.
- 1:15:06Marathon Oil Company, we got together to do it better.
- 1:15:18Now before the Rangers come to bat on the bottom of the sixth inning,
- 1:15:21we'll pause for station identification.
- 1:15:23This is the Detroit Tiger Baseball Network.
- 1:15:26At a minute past ten, here's late word from the National Weather Service in Detroit.

- 1:15:50The severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 10-15 for Wayne and Oakland counties.
- 1:15:56This is WJR Detroit.
- 1:15:59Play on Thompson, with the Tigers having a man on with two down on the top of this sixth inning,
- 1:16:05falling in the long drive near the wall in right center field.
- 1:16:08Lo and away with a fastball by Rosemontball one.
- 1:16:12Beninkus walked and scored the Rangers' first run of that third inning.
- 1:16:16He was second and came home on the double by Claudel Washington.
- 1:16:20Now the pitch, flung on and missed.
- 1:16:23One ball, one strike.
- 1:16:31Dave has pitched very well.
- 1:16:35Got himself in difficulty in the third inning.
- 1:16:37The fastball inside as Beninkus buckles out of the way.
- 1:16:40It's two balls and a strike on one.
- 1:16:43Followed by Washington and Campaneras here in the Rangers' sixth inning.
- 1:16:51Beninkus.
- 1:16:58Beninkus in a closed stance.
- 1:17:00The pitch from the right hander, flung on, base hit the right field between first and second.
- 1:17:04Beninkus picks up hit number three for the Rangers.
- 1:17:11That brings up Claudel Washington, who doubled home Beninkus in the third inning for the first Ranger run.
- 1:17:21Washington then coming on into score, he stole third and came on in on the overthrow, the throwing error by Milt Mays.
- 1:17:29Burn rule is loosening in the Tiger bullpen right now.
- 1:17:37Washington a left hand batter, hitting three-thirties and fine season thus far.
- 1:17:45Beninkus has speed.
- 1:17:47Good lead at first, a pitch to the plate.
- 1:17:49It's taken for a ball, a little high to Claudel.
- 1:17:55The Rangers traded away Jim Umbarger to get Washington and Umbarger is now in the minor league.
- 1:18:02Oakland moving him down in the recent move.
- 1:18:06First Beninkus gets back.
- 1:18:14The opener of a two-game set here at Arlington Stadium.
- 1:18:18The Rangers with a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, a man at first, nobody else.
- 1:18:22The pitch from Rosemont.
- 1:18:23Washington hits a high hopper to first.
- 1:18:24Thompson has it.
- 1:18:25Can't get the ball out of the glove.
- 1:18:27Throw to first, got him at first base.
- 1:18:29Jason looked at second, had a play of second, but had trouble getting the ball out of the glove.
- 1:18:34Ben realized he better get something out of it.
- 1:18:36Went to the first, Rosemont covering for the putout on Washington.
- 1:18:40But the Rangers now a man in scoring position.
- 1:18:42Beninkus down at second base.
- 1:18:48The play goes four to one, a putout of Washington, one down, a man at second, and Campi Campanari will be the batter.
- 1:18:57Campi is struck out and bounced out the third tonight against Rosemont.
- 1:19:03The Rose, winner of three games, no defeat so far, has pitched well, very well in this his rookie season.
- 1:19:14Here's a set by Rosemont.
- 1:19:16A look back at Beninkus.
- 1:19:17The pitch is taken for a strike.
- 1:19:19Fastball on the outside corner.

- 1:19:36Rosemont checks the runner at second.
- 1:19:39The pitch to the plate, Campi swings and misses.
- 1:19:42Foul-tipped that one, and it's bouncing out of the mid of Milt May.
- 1:19:50Milt May has taken that one on the hand. I don't know, he's walking around a little bit in the batter's box.
- 1:20:05Rosemont taking a little bit extra time.
- 1:20:13Campi hitting 298 at the moment, 0 for 2 tonight against Rosemont.

- 1:20:21Guangan and Fouled back into the stands behind the plate.
- 1:20:25Campi went lunging for that one. It was a high outside pitch.
- 1:20:38Campi has a pretty large strike zone, at least he feels he has, because he'll go after just about anything.
- 1:20:46Now the Rose, leaning on the knee, getting the side from Milt May.
- 1:20:52Benique is at second, one down, a two-strike pitch. Fouled into the dirt, rolling over toward the Tiger dugout.
- 1:20:59John Hiller gets a start tomorrow night against Gaylord Perry.
- 1:21:04Perry's won two and dropped four for the Rangers. Hiller, one and three, all in relief thus far for the Tigers.
- 1:21:10And Ernie's pregame show to begin at 8.15 again tomorrow.
- 1:21:14Don't forget the exhibition game in Cincinnati on Thursday.
- 1:21:18In a break with tradition, will be broadcast.
- 1:21:22And we'll be hitting the air at 6.45 Thursday night from Cincinnati.
- 1:21:27The stretch now by Rosla. Here's the pitch.
- 1:21:29There's a looper toward center. Here comes LaFleur. He won't get it. It drops in front of him.
- 1:21:33Benique has had to hold. He checks his third base.
- 1:21:36He didn't know whether the ball would hold up, so Benique moves to third on the looping single to center by Campanaris.
- 1:21:44Runners at first and third, one out here on the sixth inning.
- 1:21:49That'll bring up Hardgrove, Hitless in two trips against Rosla.
- 1:21:53One is in for a conversation with Young David.
- 1:21:58Ruehl continues to throw down on the Tiger bullpen.
- 1:22:04The single by Campy is hit number four for the Rangers.
- 1:22:13Against Rosla tonight, Hardgrove has lined through Oglebay and bounced out to Thompson unassisted.
- 1:22:22Dave has a spot of trouble right now.
- 1:22:25The runners at first and third, and what a runner he's got at first base, Bert Campanaris.
- 1:22:30Here's the set, the pitch to the plate. It's a cold strike on Hardgrove.
- 1:22:37Got a watch out for Campy, who has lost a little of his feet, however. He's been cut down quite a bit this year.
- 1:22:43He's tried to steal ten times and has been successful only three times.
- 1:22:52Hardgrove, a good left hand batter, the set by Rosla.
- 1:22:57And the pitch to Mike. He hits one on the ground to Thompson, goes to second for one, and they've got the...
- 1:23:05It's a double play because Thompson made the play at first base to eliminate the fourth,
- 1:23:10so Wagner had to make the tag on Campanaris who tried to run out of the base pass to elude him.
- 1:23:15It's a double play going three-six.
- 1:23:18And that's all for the Rangers here in the sixth inning. No runs, two hits, no errors, and one runner left on base.
- 1:23:25Six innings of play. The Rangers two, the Tigers one.

- 1:25:05Two to one, Texas, three. Two to five, and then a 50-point pass from Darrell Reddick-Teddon.
- 1:25:09He's kind of getting in the way.
- 1:25:11May is bouncing about right, one too short, stopping once to second.
- 1:25:15Now the Tigers pulling an empty double play.
- 1:25:17Benica's not running very hard, didn't make it to the plate before that out was made.
- 1:25:21Here's a bounding fall off the end of the bat of May, and the count is one and one on milk.
- 1:25:29Benica's crossed the plate before that second out was made.
- 1:25:33The run would have counted, but he didn't run very hard in,
- 1:25:36and the umpires noted that the play was made at second base before Benica sets the plate.
- 1:25:42Oh, the run did not score. It is two to one, Rangers.
- 1:25:46They got there two in the third. The Tigers got there one in the first.
- 1:25:51Alexander ready to pitch to the left stand of adding Tiger catcher, Milk May.
- 1:25:58He swings foul fly, lifted out of play.
- 1:26:02The Tigers scored on a single by Fluidis, a walk to Mankowski, and a two-out single by Kemp.
- 1:26:07And with two out on the third, Texas scored twice, a walk to Benica's he sold second, came home on a double by Washington.
- 1:26:14Washington stole third and came home when May threw the ball into the field.
- 1:26:18That's the story so far. We're in the seventh inning.
- 1:26:21May waiting on a one-two delivery, swings and fouls it away right down below it.
- 1:26:26Still a one-two count on Milk. The Tigers take the Mimsy Drain here.

- 1:27:06The Tigers had two for Kemp, one by Fluidis, one by Thompson, and one by Wagner.
- 1:27:11And they've all been singles.

- 1:27:38His back's stripped and a 50-bounce shot is just hit to Hargrove at first base.
- 1:27:46Right here, two runs for it. No errors. Tigers one run private, one error.
- 1:27:56Here's a strike called. He got a fast ball over.
- 1:28:02I'll feel straight up on it, Mark.
- 1:28:07Next batter will be Ron LaFleur at the top of the batting order.
- 1:28:10There's a line shot to Kemp, and there as he drops it to the outside.

- 1:30:02Will has bounced the third base and fouled out the third.
- 1:30:05They're over-shifting on him now. Mankowski, Wagner, and Pruitties all on the left side of the infield.

- 1:39:54Kemp, instead of the single that scored the only Tiger run, the Rangers came back with two in their third and it's stayed that way ever since.
- 1:40:02As Alexander and Rosemar have dueled away here in Arlington, Texas this evening.
- 1:40:07Here's Ron LaPau on the top of the batting orders, trying to get it started.
- 1:40:10Ron's bounced out three times, once to shorten, twice to second.
- 1:40:15Harris playing in a little bit closer third base, just inside the bag.
- 1:40:20Alexander the right-hander, ready to go into action in the eighth inning.
- 1:40:25He rocks in the livers, that is a strike call, a full move up in the boxes that he might want but didn't offer on it.
- 1:40:32And Harris was charging in from third.
- 1:40:36Strike one, the count on Ron.
- 1:40:39The Winnies and Mankowski will follow here in the Tiger eighth.

- 1:41:14Hope you'll be tuned their way for that one, that'll be the final game of this two-game set.
- 1:41:18Here it comes, he cuts and it's a bounding foul over near the Tiger dugout.
- 1:41:23One and two, the count on Ron.
- 1:41:29The only Tiger with more than one hit is Steve Kemp, he's had a couple of singles.
- 1:41:33All the Tiger hits have been singles tonight.
- 1:41:37Now LaFleur digs in to wait, the pitch is a ball outside, two-two the count on him.
- 1:41:43The Tigers have left five runners on the bases and the Texans have left three,
- 1:41:48they have left all three in the last two innings.
- 1:41:54Here's the motion on the two-two serve, he swings and it's a bounding ball toward right field, it's through for a base hit.
- 1:42:00Between Wills and Hargrove, field is about the right field of greed and flips back into Wills, the second of basements.

- 1:42:25Well the conference is over, Luke Casey trots back to the dugout.
- 1:42:29Pouettis has had a single, he's scored the only Tiger run, that's just in the first inning.
- 1:42:33Then he pops to the catcher in the third, he bounces to the third baseman in the fifth inning, one for three.
- 1:42:43That's the sixth Tiger hit, they've not hit their opponent.
- 1:42:48With the clock, the play dumb part comes out and says, all right boys, let's get the show moving.
- 1:42:56And Tito about right to his left hand.
- 1:43:00Alexander has struck outside, he's walk one.
- 1:43:04Walk came in the first inning.
- 1:43:07Well they're about halfway up in the infield, Hargrove will haul with the Laploride first base.
- 1:43:12Ron right now has a fair-sized lead, here's a set by Alexander.
- 1:43:16And they pick Tito Buckeball, right back to the picker, he throws the second for one, the relay to first.
- 1:43:21He's then trying to double play.
- 1:43:23He's trying to push it past the pinner, Alexander, hit it right to him.
- 1:43:27He's trying to cap an error to relay to Hargrove and there's two out, nobody on.
- 1:43:39Mankowski will be the next Tiger to bat.
- 1:43:44Bill is locked, bounce the first and try to right.
- 1:43:56The first of the two will be on bat.
- 1:43:59Two to one, the Texas Rangers in the lead.
- 1:44:03Outfield straight up on Mankowski here in the opening.
- 1:44:08Alexander winds and delivers, a slow one that got over first right.
- 1:44:15Now Texas is led all the way since the third when they scored two runs after two were out.
- 1:44:23Trying to catch them all the way.
- 1:44:26As they foul up this way it'll be out of play.
- 1:44:28Let's pause with the station identification.
- 1:44:30This is a Detroit Tiger, they spawned up first.
- 1:44:32The weather for Greta Detroit partly cloudy tonight, some widely scattered thundershowers,
- 1:44:36low temperature near 60.
- 1:44:38Tomorrow and Thursday partly sunny, continued warm, high upper 80s.
- 1:44:42At 1030 it's raining and 68.
- 1:44:44This is WJR Detroit.
- 1:44:49Mankowski fouls up another pitch and the counties strike two on him now.
- 1:44:56Alexander jammed him down in the hand.
- 1:45:00Two strikes on Bill, two to one, Rangers lead, eight innings, two outs, nobody on for Detroit.
- 1:45:07Alexander winds and delivers, here's the ball low.
- 1:45:13He's digging that one out of the dirt.
- 1:45:23Alexander ready for action, delivers, here's a fly ball down the line in right field going over his grief.
- 1:45:29Chasing near the fence he can't get it, it's just out of play in the front row.
- 1:45:34Over past the bullpen of the Rangers, just out of his reach.
- 1:45:40One and two, the count on Mankowski.
- 1:45:44The Rangers have made more of their scoring opportunities.
- 1:45:48That's for sure in this game.
- 1:45:50They scored the lead run on a throwing error by May.
- 1:45:53Washington stealing third, came on home, May fired the ball past Mankowski into the left field corner.
- 1:46:00And right now that's the difference in the game.
- 1:46:02Two to one, Pavement, Texas.
- 1:46:06Mankowski digging in to wait on a one-two delivery to him.
- 1:46:11He takes a low one and they count his two-two.
- 1:46:21Outfield pulled around the right just slightly.
- 1:46:24Alexander checking his time with Pavey into action, he goes.
- 1:46:28The pitch is a ball low, that'll make it a full count.
- 1:46:32Mankowski waiting on deck.
- 1:46:42Tigers need one to tie and two to go ahead in the eighth inning.
- 1:46:46See what Alexander will give him now on the full count delivery.
- 1:46:49Here's the wind up in the pitch.
- 1:46:51He swings as a looping drive over the head of Campanella send in left field for a base hit.
- 1:46:55Washington steals the ball on a couple of skips and Mankowski gets the hit.
- 1:46:59That's his first.
- 1:47:01Man on, two away, and it'll be up to Ben Ogleve.
- 1:47:07Well, the Tigers have picked up two hits in this inning, the only inning they've done that since the first.
- 1:47:15Hey, he goes out to talk with Alexander at the mound.
- 1:47:21Three Tigers without hits tonight, Ogleve, May, and Wachenthal.
- 1:47:28Each of the others has at least one hit.
- 1:47:33Two out, one on, Ogleve has been to that three times and Alexander has spanned him all three trips.
- 1:47:42He takes the ball low.
- 1:47:52Mankowski not vexing off very much at first base. They've got Hargrove over there holding, opening up the spot for Ben down that line a little bit.
- 1:48:03Alexander sets and deals. Here's a ball in too close. He moved him back.
- 1:48:08Two and oh, the common Ogleve is camp waiting on deck.
- 1:48:17Tigers got the leadoff man on in this inning, but a double play wipes him away from the bases.
- 1:48:23And Mankowski's single, that's where we are now.
- 1:48:36Conference is over. Ogleve is digging in to win on a two-all delivery from Doyle Alexander.
- 1:48:42The Alabama takes his set, oh, get it to the belt. Here's a strike. He got the outside corner, two and one, the count on Ben.
- 1:49:01Mankowski edging off a little part at first base.
- 1:49:06Here's a throw, gets back safely, standing up.
- 1:49:12Here's a final four from the ninth league. The Mets beat the Giants 8-1 in New York. Kuzma the winner, Manifusco the loser.
- 1:49:22And the pitch. He swings and taps one toward first. It'll go foul. The high hopper fielded by Hargrove in foul territory.
- 1:49:28And Kuzma the winner in that game is three and four. Manifusco has won two and lost six, and they had 8,366 at Chase Stadium tonight.
- 1:49:37See that one.
- 1:49:42Now two-two, the count on Ogleve with two out and one on the eighth inning.
- 1:49:47He's loose from the Texas bullpen. Time is called. He'll have to be chased down by Grieve and tossed back to the bullpen.
- 1:50:02Now Ben digging in, waiting on a two-two delivery from Doyle Alexander.
- 1:50:10A little longer lead for Mankowski at first base.
- 1:50:16And here's the pitch. He takes strikes, three called, and Ogleve has spanned for the fourth time in the game.
- 1:50:24No runs on two hits. No errors. One man left for Detroit. We go to the last half of the eighth inning. The Rangers 2-0. The Tigers 1.
- 1:50:35Now let's check on what's happened on the farm club level for the Tigers.
- 1:50:38They last 24 hours last night at Evansville, and their last loss lost a close one at Omaha 2-1. The Triplets in third place in their division of the American Association have won 16 and dropped 14.
- 1:50:50Montgomery cruised along. They beat Jacksonville 10-6.
- 1:50:53As Zenoik Garrison hit a first-winning Grand Slam homer, and Michiganer Terry Lynch had three hits and three runs batted in, helping Tapp Underwood pick up his third win against two defeats.
- 1:51:05The Rebels under Eddie Frankman leading the Western Division of the Southern League with 23 wins and only 12 defeats.
- 1:51:11And Lakeland's fine young pitcher Mike Critt won his sixth in a row. He has yet to lose. He went 10 innings as Lakeland turned in a 1-0 victory over Winterhaven,
- 1:51:20and the Lakeland Tigers remain in first place in the Northern Division of a Florida State League under Jim Leland.
- 1:51:27Last half here, sitting in Texas, the Rangers still in front of the Tigers, 2-1.
- 1:51:49John Benekes, who scored the first run after walking the two out of the third inning, will be the batter. He's also been up another time and singled on that trip, 1-1-1.
- 1:52:04He's been seeing that forever since he won 4-1-1. Now Rosemar ready to go to work. The right-hander pitches, and it is a ball outside, ball one.
- 1:52:21The pitches have both been strong tonight. There's a strike call about letter high. One-on-one, they count on Benekes.
- 1:52:31He'll be followed by the top of the batting order, Claudio Washington, then Burt Campaneras.
- 1:52:38Close one all the way here in Texas. Here's the pitch. Swing and a little nubber hit on the ground to first base, Thompson-Glendzic.
- 1:52:45Back of the bag, makes the play on assistative first, and Benekes is out. One up and one away. Now the top of the batting order, Claudio Washington.
- 1:52:54He bounced the first, doubled, as the right field, a key hit in the game. The double drove home the first run, and then he scored the second one.
- 1:53:02In the sixth inning, he bounced out first base, one of the pitcher covering.
- 1:53:09Claudio stepping in.
- 1:53:20Outfield straight up on him, and Mankowski even with the bag at third base. Now in a little bit, Claudio is jammed at the shoulder, ball one, fast ball.
- 1:53:36Two to one, the Rangers lead it in the eighth.
- 1:53:40Rosemar into the windup delivers. Here's a drive to right for a hit.
- 1:53:45He weighed in and snapped a single to right. That's his second hit. Washington on with one down in the eighth inning.
- 1:53:55A big fifth hit for the Rangers. It'll bring up Bert Cappanarello.
- 1:54:05Magnus weight is up about halfway on second with Thompson holding at the bag at first. Now Mankowski's a step behind third. Throw the first and Claudio's back.
- 1:54:15He's a good runner. They'll have to keep an eye on him. And LeCasey's had his charges running here tonight.
- 1:54:25A little kicking of the bag over there by the umpire, New Decker, trying to get it settled. Now Washington edges off.
- 1:54:39Throw the first, he's back in time.
- 1:54:47Rosemar keeping an eye on the baserunner Washington who's moving off a little farther now. Another couple of steps. Set by the Rose. A pitch, it's a pitch out, but he's not moving this time.
- 1:55:01Far away in the count on Cappanarello. Can't be a very fine number two hitter. He can hit and run well. Lay down a bunt and he's a little slower than he was, but he still has pretty good speed. Now the set by Rosemar. A runner doesn't go. He busts going. A swing and a miss by Campy.
- 1:55:19One and one they count on him. Two to one the Rangers lead the Tigers. We're in the eighth inning in Texas. One on and one out for the Rangers. The step, the pitch.
- 1:55:35Not moving again. It's a pitch out, two and one. Campy takes a glimpse down to third base, George Conny Ryan.
- 1:55:49Moving off another step toward second. Draws a throw, gets back with a head first slide.
- 1:56:07Maging off again. He doesn't go. The pitch is swung on and missed. Like a fastball about at the hands. Two to the count on Cappanarello. Rangers two Tigers, one of the eights.
- 1:56:22Next batter will be Mike Hargrove, the left hander batting first baseman. Right now they've got to concentrate on Cappanarello to play. Washington in the first base.
- 1:56:34Rosemar looking to get his time from May. He's back with a head first slide.
- 1:56:43And again, that's a new guy kicking that bag.
- 1:56:53And there's Cappanarello trying to lengthen his lead at first base. Count is two to one Cappanarello. He's going. The pitch is swung on, hit in the air. The left field is not deep. Here comes Kemp, taking hard. Can he get there? No he can't. The ball falls in front of him.
- 1:57:09Washington heads for third. He's in safely and throws a second. Bates the second at Cappanarello. They had the runner going and the ball was hit in the short left field. Kemp charged in, couldn't quite get there, had to play it on one off.
- 1:57:23And the hit run may have removed Washington in the third. It'll be a single and Cappanarello goes for second on the third.
- 1:57:31A little Texas Linger dropping in safely in short left field. Man on second and the man on third, one away.
- 1:57:40And hard draw for batter. Woody Horton's schedule next.
- 1:57:47Now let's see if they'll put him on. Yep they will. They're going to watch him first base is open.
- 1:57:54Means a fourth out of the play, a double play on the ground ball and a right hand pitcher against the right hand batter. So all that contributes to the strategy here.
- 1:58:03But House chooses. Walking hard draw to load the bases. And bringing up the old Tiger Willie Horton.
- 1:58:11Ball three outside on hard draw. It'll be the third walk he took by Rosemont.
- 1:58:18And there's ball four. Now the bases are loaded.
- 1:58:26And the Texas crowd is standing to give Horton an ovation.
- 1:58:34Meanwhile the Tigers are going to have a conference at the mound.
- 1:58:43And here's Willie's record tonight. He bounced the third and the second on him. He bowed to the third baseman, Mancowski, in the fourth inning.
- 1:58:50He had a sharp line drive directly to the glove of the left fielder, Kent. The last time it batted him seven-bottom.
- 1:58:58Now the bases are loaded. One man down. The Rangers lead two to one. Woody Horton against Dave Rosemont.
- 1:59:09In field and double play down.
- 1:59:14Washington the lead runner third base. Rosemont working off the set position to the leaders. And Woody takes the pressing ball wide.
- 1:59:23Washington at third. Campanaro at second. Hard draw at third.
- 1:59:28Two singles in a walk for the mound but one away.
- 1:59:35Now Rosemont trying to hold it on. He was about to start an eighth inning.
- 1:59:42Woody starting very near the plate.
- 1:59:46Now certainly in set position.
- 1:59:49The defense, the three, was a fair ball away.
- 1:59:52I told him he'd be looking to the back. No point in.
- 1:59:54Mixed the gudges at back by Washington. He'll still eat it.
- 1:59:57The field put off by Rosemont. It is three to one.
- 2:00:01It ought to be in second place tonight but we need to hurry.
- 2:00:07Campanaro held it second. Hard draw held at first base.
- 2:00:15That makes it three to one now the Rangers and the batter will be Greaves.
- 2:00:23With two men on and two men out.
- 2:00:26The outfield play down straight up.
- 2:00:30The Rangers stuck out and twice bounced at their base.
- 2:00:35Three to one. The Texans lead it.
- 2:00:39And Rosemont not out of the woods yet.
- 2:00:44Outfield a little bit to the left now. Here's the pitch.
- 2:00:47He takes one across the plate. Tucked the outstretched on his strike one.
- 2:00:56The pitch goes a little deeper on the left and on the right.
- 2:01:06Rosemont ready.
- 2:01:08And the pitch swung on and popped in the air to short right field.
- 2:01:11Here comes Ogilvy.
- 2:01:13He's under it on the run and makes the catch to retire the side.
- 2:01:18However, there's been damage by the Texans.
- 2:01:21One run on a walk and two singles at a sacrifice.
- 2:01:24And no Tiger errors. Two runners on the left. We go to the ninth inning.
- 2:01:27Texas three Detroit one.
- 2:01:30From the pipeline in Wyoming.
- 2:01:34To the oil wells down in Texas.
- 2:01:38Off the shore in Louisiana.
- 2:01:42To right back home in Finley.
- 2:01:46Getting oil out of the ground is one thing.
- 2:01:48Turning it into something people can use is another.
- 2:01:50We got people together we thought could do it better.
- 2:01:53And we called the company Marathon.
- 2:01:56From the waters of Alaska.
- 2:02:00To the research labs in Denver.
- 2:02:04From the Robertson 35 range.
- 2:02:08To pumping gas in Indiana.
- 2:02:13We got together to do it better.
- 2:02:16We did Marathon.
- 2:02:23Marathon Oil Company. We got together to do it better.
- 2:02:34High sports fans, Warren Pierce here reminding you that I'm here every night of the week when there is no Tiger baseball.
- 2:02:41Seven to ten on WJR Detroit.
- 2:02:47Well the Tigers need some instant runs here now.
- 2:02:50They're trailing by two. Three to one. Ninth inning.
- 2:02:55It'll be Steve Kemp trying to lead it off.
- 2:02:58Off the side.
- 2:03:03Kemp's had a couple of singles. He bounced out the third.
- 2:03:06He's middle dribbled two for three for the young outfielder.
- 2:03:13Garry Kemp has gone all the way. He's scattered seven Tiger hits.
- 2:03:17Here's a fly ball. It's a right field deep. Going back is free. He's at the wall and he makes the catch.
- 2:03:23Got it on the warning track.
- 2:03:25Long fly to the right. Retires Kemp on the first pitch.
- 2:03:33Jason will be the next Tiger batter.
- 2:03:41They have announced that the X-rays on Sunberg were negative and he'll take a day's rest.
- 2:03:50He was injured by the bat in the early part of the ball game and had to be replaced. That's the Texas catcher.
- 2:03:56Here's Jason now with one for three.
- 2:03:58Swings and taps went over the mound. Wills charges his second. Flips it over the first. They got him by a step and a half.
- 2:04:04Two pitches and two out in the Tiger ninth inning.
- 2:04:16They're making the announcement now on Sunberg over the PA. You might get some kind of a crowd reaction here.
- 2:04:22Yep, there it is.
- 2:04:28Milton May with two down in the ninth inning. The Tigers need two to tie.
- 2:04:32They trail it three to one in the first game of two here in Texas.
- 2:04:41Alexander ready to work and delivers a fastball outside.
- 2:04:52Watkins first, waiting on deck. He takes the strike and above the knees.
- 2:05:13Alexander into action. Here's a foul out of play. One ball and two strikes.
- 2:05:27Alexander's been tough. The Tigers got that one run in the first inning.
- 2:05:35Single a walk and then the RBI single by Kemp. They've not scored since then.
- 2:05:42They get that one-two pitch, two out ninth. Here's the pitch. He swings and fouls it away. Off the middle play.
- 2:05:51Still alive with a one-two count as Milton May.
- 2:06:03He's not getting his time getting back in there. He's making Alexander wait a little bit.
- 2:06:12Here's the motion and the pitch. Swung on and foul to the screen. One and two of the count on him.
- 2:06:25Here's a rally. Died by Alexander in the last eight innings. Now the right-handed. Texas fine with his ketchup-ay-he.
- 2:06:35And the motion. Here's the pitch. He swings and misses. The game's over and Texas wins it.
- 2:06:42No runs, no hits, no errors and nobody left. And the final score, Texas three, Detroit one.

- 2:08:02But the young twenty-year-old right-hander from Grand Rapids came up empty this time, suffering his first loss.
- 2:08:08After three victories, Doyle Alexander giving up a first inning run to the Tigers and then shutting them out on five hits the rest of the way.
- 2:08:16As his teammates picked up a pair of runs in the second, an unearned run as a result of a throwing error by Milt May that made the difference and gave Texas a 2-1 lead.
- 2:08:28Then Willie Horton sacrificed Fly in the eighth inning, adding an insurance run for Texas.
- 2:08:34Aligned score for the Rangers, three runs, six hits and no errors. They left five on base.
- 2:08:39The Tigers had one run on seven hits with one error and left six on base.
- 2:08:44Roseman now three and one. Doyle Alexander, the winner, is five and one.
- 2:08:49The game took two hours, fourteen minutes to play before a crowd of 10,826.

- 2:10:01People Worth is a gallery of people worth knowing.
- 2:10:05I'm Oscar Furnett, ready with a guided tour every weeknight during the dinner hour here on the Goodwill station.
- 2:10:17The Tigers jumped in front in the very first inning, but that's all they could score off Doyle Alexander tonight with one out Tita Fuentes. It was safe on a bunt single.
- 2:10:25Phil Mankowski walked, and then with two outs, Steve Kent, single to right to score Fuentes from second base.
- 2:10:30But the Rangers took the lead in the second inning.
- 2:10:33I'll take your pardon, in the third inning.
- 2:10:37With two outs, Juan Beníquez walked, stole second on a high throw from Milt May, got in underneath the attempted tag by Wagner.
- 2:10:45And Claudel Washington doubled into the corner in right field to score Beníquez to tie the game at one apiece.
- 2:10:51And Washington stole third as May overthrew Mankowski down into the left field corner.
- 2:10:57Washington wheeled on in to score and made it two to one at Texas.
- 2:11:01The Rangers adding one more run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Willie Horton, following singles by Washington and Kampi Kampaneras, and an intentional pass to Mike Hardrow.
- 2:11:14Alexander struck out seven Tigers, walked only one, and upping his record to five and one, he's now got a career record of 12 wins and only three defeats against the Tigers.
- 2:11:24Rosema suffers his first loss of his major league career after winning three straights.
- 2:11:29A day walked free, two of them intentionally. He struck out three and hit one batter.
- 2:11:34So the Rangers draw first blood in this series. They've now beaten the Tigers two times in two meetings this year.
- 2:11:40The windup of a short two-game stay in Texas comes tomorrow night when John Hiller will get his first start of the season, only his second since 1972.
- 2:11:50He'll go against the veteran Gaylord Perry, who'll be seeking to become only the third pitcher in major league history to win 100 games in each league.
- 2:11:59He needs one more win. He has two wins and four defeats this year, 99 wins in the American League, then coming over from the National League.
- 2:12:07Our broadcast coverage tomorrow will begin at 8.15 Eastern Daylight Time with Ernie Harwell's pregame show.
- 2:12:13That's the story from Arlington Stadium for Ernie. This is Paul Carey saying so long.
- 2:12:18Once again the final start, the Texas Rangers three, the Detroit Tigers one.
