- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Kraken This Morning, a presentation of the Kraken
- 0:05Speaker 1: Audio Network and Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM. Here's Mike Benton.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Quick hitter edition of Kraken This Morning coming your way
- 0:15Speaker 2: on a Saturday, October 24th. Mike Benton with you for
- 0:18Speaker 2: Kraken This Morning, the first matchup of the season coming
- 0:21Speaker 2: tonight at 7 o'clock from Climate Pledge Arena. the Kraken
- 0:25Speaker 2: hosting the Minnesota Wild for the first matchup out of three.
- 0:29Speaker 2: It's a pretty important stretch the Kraken are getting into
- 0:32Speaker 2: of 10 games, which includes several teams over.
- 0:36Speaker 3: 500.
- 0:36Speaker 2: They pass one test on Thursday night, beating the Utah
- 0:40Speaker 2: Mammoth 5-3, and now shift their attention To the Minnesota roster,
- 0:45Speaker 2: that's got stars such as Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy, and
- 0:49Speaker 2: Quinn Hughes. Mackie Samuskevich helped the Kraken pass the Thursday
- 0:52Speaker 2: test with the eventual game-winning goal, and ever since he
- 0:56Speaker 2: switched lines between Matty Beneers to Chandler Stephenson, he's got
- 1:00Speaker 2: goals now in back-to-back games. We'll learn more about Mackie's
- 1:03Speaker 2: game and the progress of the Kraken from his own
- 1:06Speaker 2: insights coming up in just a bit as the Kraken
- 1:10Speaker 2: looking to go 3-0 on the four-game homestand and end
- 1:13Speaker 2: a five-game winless skid against Minnesota. Before we get to Mackey,
- 1:18Speaker 2: here's a little refresher as far as how Thursday night went.
- 1:22Speaker 2: And just like Tuesday, topsy-turvy, plenty of twists and turns
- 1:27Speaker 2: as the Kraken built a lead but found in the
- 1:30Speaker 2: third period they needed a little bit more.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Now they bring it back in onside.
- 1:34Speaker 5: Jordan Eberle, a shot near wing. It bounces off the inboards,
- 1:38Speaker 5: off the back of Mamelka, and they score. Eberle fires
- 1:46Speaker 5: a shot wide of the goal. It takes a very
- 1:49Speaker 5: lively hop off the wall and off the back of Vemelka.
- 1:53Speaker 5: And in, the captain has given the Kraken a 1-0 lead.
- 1:57Speaker 4: We talked a lot about these first passes under the
- 1:59Speaker 4: D zone that have been missing over the first part
- 2:01Speaker 4: of this first period. This one does not. gets right
- 2:04Speaker 4: on the Eberle stick on the far blue line. He
- 2:06Speaker 4: just puts a shot on net, hoping to get a rebound.
- 2:09Speaker 4: That rebound comes off the backboards after a save from Malka.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Comes over the back of the net, hits him in
- 2:16Speaker 4: the numbers behind, and bounces in. 1-0 Seattle. Nice move
- 2:21Speaker 4: on Kraus. Katton throws it down low.
- 2:23Speaker 5: Backdoor tap-in!
- 2:24Speaker 4: Scores!
- 2:30Speaker 6: Matty Beneers draws the penalty! and finds the back of
- 2:35Speaker 6: the net, 1.37 to go on the first, cracking back
- 2:39Speaker 6: on top, 2-1.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Well, the top of Utah's box blows a tire on
- 2:44Speaker 4: Berkley Catt. Catt recognizes it and attacks the net. He
- 2:48Speaker 4: drops the puck down low to Kapokaku, who does a
- 2:51Speaker 4: nice spinning move, backhand pass over to Matty Beneers on
- 2:55Speaker 4: the back post. He taps it home, cracking up, 2-1.
- 2:58Speaker 1: On tour to the half wall, the captain.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Back to Montour.
- 3:01Speaker 7: Wides. Fires.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Scores!
- 3:10Speaker 5: Monty Mania on the power play.
- 3:13Speaker 6: He's got goals in back-to-back games.
- 3:16Speaker 3: The Kraken with a 3-1.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Lead, 17-37 to go in the second. Well, after rigging
- 3:22Speaker 4: the puck off the post the first time Montour put
- 3:24Speaker 4: one on net, he gets another great feed from Jordan Eberle,
- 3:28Speaker 4: set up for a one-timer. He puts everything into this
- 3:31Speaker 4: bomb from the point, blows it past Wemelka.
- 3:34Speaker 1: 3-1 Seattle.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Mammoth will save it.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Shemeshed behind.
- 3:38Speaker 5: Kraus trying to wrap around.
- 3:40Speaker 6: And Goodall another spectacular save.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Eager.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Now for Cooley.
- 3:44Speaker 4: High slot shot.
- 3:45Speaker 3: And they score. That one on side. And the Mammoth
- 3:53Speaker 3: have tied the game 3-3. 12-17 to go in period
- 3:58Speaker 3: number three. Now Seattle breaks it up the right side.
- 4:00Speaker 3: McMahon shoots. That one through the pads of LaMelka. Goes
- 4:04Speaker 3: off the side of the goal. McMahon again.
- 4:06Speaker 8: Back door.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Scores!
- 4:14Speaker 6: Mackie Sanoskevich goes toward the goal. Crashing the net, he'll
- 4:21Speaker 6: finish the play. And the Kraken regain their lead. It's
- 4:25Speaker 6: a 4-3 edge with 5.25 left in regulation.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Well, Bobby McMahon with tons of speed down that left side.
- 4:33Speaker 4: He's got a 2-on-1, but he's got to step on
- 4:36Speaker 4: the mammoth defense. But he opts for the shot. Like
- 4:38Speaker 4: he said, Vemelka leaks that one out. He ends up
- 4:42Speaker 4: picking the puck up again. Finding Samus Gibbons trailing down
- 4:45Speaker 4: the slot. Puts it on his stick. And on the
- 4:48Speaker 4: first shot of this third period, the Kraken.
- 4:50Speaker 7: Score, 4-3.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Mammoth can't hold the line. And Seattle will chase.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Them back to the center circle. Now Gaudreau picks it
- 4:58Speaker 4: off toward the empty net.
- 4:59Speaker 7: Score!
- 5:07Speaker 6: Puck pressure from Freddie Gaudreau.
- 5:09Speaker 1: In the neutral zone.
- 5:10Speaker 6: Takes it away and will send it down the ice.
- 5:14Speaker 3: For his team-leading sixth of the season, and the Seattle
- 5:18Speaker 3: Kraken with a two-goal lead, 5-3.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Freddie Gaudreau getting rewarded out there with that puck pressure.
- 5:24Speaker 4: We talked a lot about it last game. You force
- 5:27Speaker 4: players to make mistakes when you put puck pressure on them.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Freddie Gaudreau doing that, picking off that mammoth pass, getting
- 5:35Speaker 4: across the red line, and putting that one home, cracking
- 5:38Speaker 4: her up.
- 5:38Speaker 7: 5-3. Yeah, I thought we were playing well. Goal or not,
- 5:42Speaker 7: I thought we were on them, and um, getting chances
- 5:45Speaker 7: there at the end. I thought we did a great
- 5:47Speaker 7: job sticking with it. They were, you know, pretty solid
- 5:49Speaker 7: the whole way, you know, through until the third period.
- 5:51Speaker 7: I thought we, you know, as a line stepped up
- 5:53Speaker 7: pretty good. And, um, when it's going that well, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 7: something's good gonna happen.
- 5:58Speaker 8: Uh, that's three games on the last, I don't know,
- 6:00Speaker 8: 10 days where you guys have had a multi-goal lead
- 6:02Speaker 8: going into the third and it ends up going away.
- 6:04Speaker 7: How do you avoid having that happen? Um, I think
- 6:07Speaker 7: just coming out of the period, um, you know, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 7: getting ready. I think, uh, it's all mindset. I think, um,
- 6:14Speaker 7: When they come on to us there, it's hard. We
- 6:20Speaker 7: just got to stick with it, play simple. I think
- 6:23Speaker 7: we kind of get away from it when they're playing well.
- 6:27Speaker 7: I think just keeping it simple is the right thing.
- 6:29Speaker 8: They're so offensively, they've got such offensive upside. You probably
- 6:33Speaker 8: knew the push was coming at some point there. you
- 6:35Speaker 8: guys were absorbing a lot of it on the defensive end,
- 6:37Speaker 8: your group too. How'd you kind of weather that and
- 6:40Speaker 8: to hold on against their push there?
- 6:42Speaker 7: Yeah, they did a good job. I thought we, you know,
- 6:46Speaker 7: we just stayed inside. Didn't give them, you know, good ice,
- 6:50Speaker 7: you know, good scoring chances. I thought, you know, everything
- 6:52Speaker 7: was kind of outside. So, you know, when you're doing that, it's,
- 6:56Speaker 7: you know, hard to get the puck inside, hard to get,
- 6:57Speaker 7: you know, good chances. So I thought we did a
- 7:00Speaker 7: good job of that.
- 7:00Speaker 8: Can you kind of walk us through your goal too,
- 7:02Speaker 8: how you found it coming to you there off of
- 7:03Speaker 8: Bobby's stick?
- 7:05Speaker 7: It was a bit chaotic. Puck was bouncing everywhere and
- 7:08Speaker 7: then came to Bobby and he kind of just made
- 7:10Speaker 7: the perfect play to me. I didn't have to do
- 7:12Speaker 7: much there, so credit to him. It looked like he
- 7:16Speaker 7: was going to spin and shoot.
- 7:17Speaker 8: Were you almost looking for a rebound there and all
- 7:19Speaker 8: of a sudden it's on your stick?
- 7:20Speaker 7: Yeah, pretty much. It was chaotic, like I said. He
- 7:24Speaker 7: kind of saw me last second. I think he wanted
- 7:26Speaker 7: to put it back, but smart play by him. He's
- 7:29Speaker 7: a smart player. I've loved playing with him and Chan
- 7:31Speaker 7: so far, so hopefully we can keep it going.
- 7:34Speaker 6: How did it feel to have the team leading goal there,
- 7:36Speaker 6: or tied for the team leading goal for about four minutes?
- 7:39Speaker 2: Did Goudreau come by and say something after he scored
- 7:41Speaker 2: the empty netter?
- 7:44Speaker 7: No, it's all love. He's a great guy, a great
- 7:48Speaker 7: player too, so he can have it. But I'm coming
- 7:53Speaker 7: for him.
- 7:55Speaker 8: Overall seven wins in 11 games pretty good start for
- 7:57Speaker 8: you guys how do you kind of feel it's it's
- 7:59Speaker 8: been both offensively for you but then as the team's
- 8:02Speaker 8: kind of got rolling here out.
- 8:02Speaker 7: Of the gates yeah i've loved our game um you
- 8:05Speaker 7: know even that start of that road trip there uh
- 8:08Speaker 7: we were playing really well the whole road trip i
- 8:09Speaker 7: thought we were playing really well um you know i
- 8:12Speaker 7: think it's it's great that we're playing well but you
- 8:15Speaker 7: know there's a lot that we can get better at
- 8:16Speaker 7: which is really exciting so Just got to keep going.
- 8:20Speaker 2: That's Mackie Samuskevich who met with the media after Thursday
- 8:23Speaker 2: night's game. And while it may be early, he's on
- 8:26Speaker 2: a pretty good pace as of right now with five
- 8:28Speaker 2: goals in 10 games.
- 8:30Speaker 1: He gets one more.
- 8:31Speaker 2: He's already halfway there to last year's total. That was 12,
- 8:35Speaker 2: accomplishing that with the Florida Panthers. in 77 games. So far,
- 8:40Speaker 2: via the early returns, the trade's looking pretty good on
- 8:44Speaker 2: the Kraken side where Sam Miskevich is fitting into the
- 8:46Speaker 2: scheme of the Seattle Kraken offense. No practice on Friday
- 8:50Speaker 2: as the team opting to rest in between matchups here
- 8:53Speaker 2: and getting ready with a relatively healthy lineup. No changes
- 8:57Speaker 2: here on the horizon expected for the contest against Minnesota
- 9:01Speaker 2: as the Kraken aim for their first win head-to-head against
- 9:04Speaker 2: the Wilds since the Dan Bilesma era, and in its
- 9:07Speaker 2: infancy back on October 12th of 2024. Again, the Kraken
- 9:12Speaker 2: looking to end a five-game winless drought against Minnesota. Based
- 9:17Speaker 2: on the recent couple of games, it has put the
- 9:19Speaker 2: Kraken out to seven wins and 15 points, their best
- 9:22Speaker 2: 11-game start in franchise history. The question bears, are the
- 9:26Speaker 2: Kraken more about the solid start they've had in the
- 9:29Speaker 2: first two periods, or is the concern of keeping a
- 9:32Speaker 2: lead in period three. Regardless, here are the facts. Do
- 9:36Speaker 2: you want offense? The Kraken are fourth right now in
- 9:39Speaker 2: the NHL, 3.8 goals per game.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Check.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Do you want depth? Everyone on this roster has a
- 9:45Speaker 2: point or more except for Curtis Douglas and two players
- 9:49Speaker 2: who are injured still in Ryan Lindgren and Jacob Alonso.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Check.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Do you want to see young players continue to help
- 9:56Speaker 2: lead the way? Well, we mentioned Sam Miskevich's five goals
- 9:59Speaker 2: in 10 games. That one off the crack and lead.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Berkley Catton in the meantime, eight points in 11 games.
- 10:06Speaker 2: And while it's still maybe early, that's on pace for
- 10:09Speaker 2: a 60-point season. And he's one off the crack and
- 10:12Speaker 2: scoring lead shared. Jordan Eberle, Chandler Stevenson, and Kapo Kako.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Check.
- 10:17Speaker 2: And while Team State percentages may be taking a bit
- 10:20Speaker 2: of a dip over the last week, the Kraken are
- 10:22Speaker 2: still in the upper half of the NHL in Team
- 10:25Speaker 2: State percentage at 896. Philip Grubauer has certainly helped carry
- 10:29Speaker 2: plenty of that mail over the recent five games at 4-0-1,
- 10:34Speaker 2: turning in a 9-0-7, say, percentage in that span. He
- 10:38Speaker 2: has started the last two games, both victories, earning 54
- 10:42Speaker 2: saves on 60 shots on net. also stopping four of
- 10:46Speaker 2: five in a shootout win Tuesday over the Red Wings.
- 10:50Speaker 2: And a guy who might be interested here in this
- 10:52Speaker 2: matchup in the Kraken dressing room? Well, you can look
- 10:55Speaker 2: at Freddie Gaudreau, the former Wild forward, who comes in
- 10:57Speaker 2: right now as leading Kraken goal scorer with six on
- 11:00Speaker 2: the campaign. and he owns seven points in his last
- 11:04Speaker 2: seven games. Plenty of familiar faces still remain on the
- 11:08Speaker 2: wild side who definitely pose a threat, beginning with Kirill
- 11:12Speaker 2: Kaprizov owning eight points in the last five games. He's
- 11:16Speaker 2: got five goals in that span, bumping his total to
- 11:20Speaker 2: 11 on the season, ending Thursday as the league's leading
- 11:24Speaker 2: goal scorer, one ahead of the Oilers' Leon Dreisaitl, who
- 11:28Speaker 2: is playing like an offensive supernova with Connor McDavid, at
- 11:31Speaker 2: this point. While the status of Quinn Hughes beyond this
- 11:34Speaker 2: season is in question, his offensive game is a complete opposite.
- 11:38Speaker 2: He is second right now on the wild and scoring
- 11:40Speaker 2: with 13 points in 11 games on the back end.
- 11:44Speaker 2: And while we're at it, the Kraken would be well
- 11:46Speaker 2: served to find a way to contain Matt Boldy, who
- 11:49Speaker 2: owns 17 points in 13 career games against the Kraken
- 11:52Speaker 2: and a 10-game point streak head-to-head in this matchup. The
- 11:56Speaker 2: only guy matching his scoring output head-to-head against the Kraken
- 12:00Speaker 2: all time, that's the guy who we just talked about
- 12:02Speaker 2: in Kaprizov with 17 points as well head-to-head in just
- 12:07Speaker 2: six games. The Wild are in a bit of a
- 12:09Speaker 2: tougher spot as far as their injuries compared to the Kraken.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Among those on IR, goaltender Phillip Gustafson, left winger Marcus Foligno,
- 12:17Speaker 2: his brother Nick Foligno, and defenseman Brock Faber suffering a
- 12:21Speaker 2: fractured skull in a preseason game against Dallas. He is
- 12:25Speaker 2: out right now indefinitely with no timetable set for a return.
- 12:30Speaker 2: And as proof, there are no guaranteed two-point nights in
- 12:33Speaker 2: the NHL. Well, the Wilds fell to the Calgary Flames
- 12:36Speaker 2: on Thursday, who got just their third win in nine games.
- 12:39Speaker 2: 2-1 was the final in Calgary. Devin Cooley made 36 saves.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Michael McCarron had the only goal for Minnesota, while Jesper
- 12:47Speaker 2: Volstead made 20 saves. in net for the Wild. Jared
- 12:51Speaker 2: Spurgeon and Ole Mata made the returns to the lineup,
- 12:55Speaker 2: while Kaprizov had a seven-game point streak and a four-game
- 12:59Speaker 2: goal streak snapped on Thursday night. That sets the scene
- 13:02Speaker 2: for this one. First of three matchups going down as
- 13:05Speaker 2: the Kraken aiming for a 3-0 homestand and looking to
- 13:09Speaker 2: snap a five-game winless skid against Minnesota. Puck drops a
- 13:13Speaker 2: little past 7 o'clock Pacific time from Climate Pledge Arena.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Everett Fitzhugh, Al Koniski on the call. I'll join you
- 13:19Speaker 2: 6.30 back by the Coors Light landing and Section 20
- 13:22Speaker 2: while we take you up to an hour after the
- 13:25Speaker 2: final horn. We're talking Kraken live from Tom's Watch Bar.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Anders Hurst will be joining me side by side for that.
- 13:32Speaker 2: So we'll look forward to your reaction after the game.
- 13:36Speaker 2: We'll talk to you then for Kraken this morning. I'm
- 13:38Speaker 2: Mike Benson.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Your home for the Kraken. Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
