Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:39Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:42Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this episode, we are talking about
- 0:46Speaker 1: this week's subject to the Disgraceland full episode, the National
- 0:49Speaker 1: Football League and its criminal origins, the Rolling Stones, Tumbling Dice, Motown, Motorhead,
- 0:56Speaker 1: the Libertines, and of course we are diving into your voicemails,
- 0:59Speaker 1: text and more, and as always.
- 1:01Speaker 2: A whole lot of rosie.
- 1:03Speaker 1: All right, disc goes, let's get into it. I'm all
- 1:20Speaker 1: sixes and sevens and nines. I always loved that line
- 1:24Speaker 1: from the Rolling Stone song Tumbling Dice. I never quite
- 1:27Speaker 1: knew what it meant, for sure, I always interpreted it
- 1:29Speaker 1: to mean that the protagonist in the song was frustrated,
- 1:32Speaker 1: frustrated with his dice game, with the roll of the dice,
- 1:36Speaker 1: whatever frustrated with his woman. Whatever it was, he was frustrated.
- 1:40Speaker 1: He was up against it, perhaps up against it with
- 1:43Speaker 1: whomever he was wagering with. Gambling is, of course, at
- 1:47Speaker 1: the core of this week's full episode on the NFL
- 1:49Speaker 1: and the league's gambling origins, and there are quite a
- 1:53Speaker 1: few characters from this episode that we just released that
- 1:56Speaker 1: wind up rolling sixes and sevens and nines figuratively. They
- 2:00Speaker 1: end up against it, and they end up murdered because
- 2:02Speaker 1: of the risk that they took. Now, I've never been
- 2:06Speaker 1: much of a risk taker when it comes to betting.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I've never been much of a gambler, not by my
- 2:11Speaker 1: family's standards anyway. I come from gamblers football, college football,
- 2:17Speaker 1: college basketball cards, the lottery, the daily number, scratch tickets, hell,
- 2:21Speaker 1: even bingo. My family gambles a lot, and they always have.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I'm the black sheep in this regard in almost all
- 2:30Speaker 1: other regards as well, but that's a separate issue. I
- 2:32Speaker 1: do bet, but just not as much as they do,
- 2:36Speaker 1: or with as much intensity or interest or risk.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I bet football.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Every week during the season, usually just the pick six
- 2:43Speaker 1: football cards. Of course, it's more fun that way. Not
- 2:47Speaker 1: sure about the statute of limitations. But even with the
- 2:50Speaker 1: advent of legal sports betting apps, my brother in law
- 2:52Speaker 1: and I found someone to take our action on a
- 2:55Speaker 1: couple of recent Super Bowls.
- 2:56Speaker 2: But that's just between you and I.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Even with the betting that I do that I just
- 3:00Speaker 1: laid out for you, it's nothing compared to how my
- 3:02Speaker 1: family bets. Like I said, my relationship with gambling is
- 3:06Speaker 1: not what my family's relationship with gambling is. Not that
- 3:09Speaker 1: their relationship with it is wrong in any way, It's
- 3:12Speaker 1: clearly not mine.
- 3:13Speaker 2: It's just different. Now.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Going back some years, my stepfather and my grandfather, not
- 3:17Speaker 1: my stepfather's father, but my father's stepfather, if that makes sense.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Growing up, they were both in addition to gamblers, they
- 3:24Speaker 1: were both pretty serious alcoholics. They both drank a lot.
- 3:29Speaker 1: My stepfather has been sober for thirty something years now,
- 3:32Speaker 1: my grandfather has passed.
- 3:33Speaker 2: But the point is they were always drinking.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I swear I didn't know driving with an open bottle
- 3:38Speaker 1: aboudwiser was illegal until I turned about twelve years old,
- 3:41Speaker 1: because I'd just seen it done so many damn times before.
- 3:44Speaker 1: These guys drank a shit ton and sometimes together. Even
- 3:47Speaker 1: though like I said, it was my stepfather drinking with
- 3:50Speaker 1: my grandfather, who was my father's stepfather, makes sense. Yet
- 3:53Speaker 1: I feel like the more I say it, the mortal
- 3:55Speaker 1: makes sense to you. Their drinking was of course a
- 3:57Speaker 1: problem for my mother and for my grandmother, who understandably
- 4:01Speaker 1: had to put up with other bullshit. Again, they drank
- 4:04Speaker 1: all the fucking time, but the only time they didn't
- 4:08Speaker 1: drink was when they played cards, these epic games, high
- 4:12Speaker 1: rolling games, I presume, thus the sobriety games, where they
- 4:16Speaker 1: and a handful of other degenerate gamblers would lock themselves
- 4:19Speaker 1: away in a motel or in someone's apartment or garage
- 4:22Speaker 1: or god knows where for about two or three days
- 4:24Speaker 1: and night straight and gamble and again not drink, which
- 4:28Speaker 1: was just astounding to me. How the hell can you
- 4:30Speaker 1: be such a pain in the ass drug and piss
- 4:32Speaker 1: off my mom and grandmother so much with your drinking,
- 4:35Speaker 1: refusing to stop, by the way, and then the only
- 4:37Speaker 1: time you do stop is when you want to gamble.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Even at a young age, this seemed like a wild
- 4:42Speaker 1: misplacement of priorities. Now, I hold no ill will. I
- 4:46Speaker 1: love my grandfather and I love my stepfather. He doesn't
- 4:49Speaker 1: drink anymore, but he still gambles. And I'm telling you
- 4:52Speaker 1: this story not to bitch and moan, but to illustrate
- 4:54Speaker 1: how gambling is woven into my family dynamic. Gambling on football. Specifically,
- 5:00Speaker 1: our family is part of a season long pool where
- 5:02Speaker 1: the wins calculated from our football cards that we bet
- 5:05Speaker 1: each each week result in a pretty big, big payout
- 5:10Speaker 1: to one of us at the end of the year.
- 5:12Speaker 1: My aunt Poppy, I'm pretty sure, puts more time into
- 5:14Speaker 1: studying points spreads during the football season than I do
- 5:17Speaker 1: researching disgrace land topics.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And I'm not even joking. In twenty twenty, when the
- 5:21Speaker 2: Kansas City.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Chiefs beat the San Francisco forty nine Ers in the
- 5:24Speaker 1: Super Bowl, I not only won the year end football
- 5:27Speaker 1: card pool that I was just talking about, I won
- 5:30Speaker 1: the Super Bowl pool as well. I also won my
- 5:33Speaker 1: bet on the game itself. Pretty sure I took the
- 5:35Speaker 1: Niners with the points and the Chiefs didn't cover. And
- 5:38Speaker 1: also I won our fantasy football league that year that
- 5:42Speaker 1: my family participates in. And man did I feel like
- 5:45Speaker 1: an asshole in taking all that money from my family members.
- 5:49Speaker 1: It was quite a hall when all was said and done,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and I ended up donating it to charity just to
- 5:52Speaker 1: feel like less of an asshole. I don't have the
- 5:56Speaker 1: gambler's gene, or maybe I do and I just suppress it.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I think that because of my family, I'm subconsciously afraid
- 6:02Speaker 1: that I'm going to like gambling too much and gamble
- 6:05Speaker 1: my mortgage payments away. At an early age, I saw
- 6:09Speaker 1: gambling take hold of people. By the time I was
- 6:11Speaker 1: ten or eleven, I was calling in bets from my
- 6:13Speaker 1: stepfather to bookies.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Why.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I can only assume because my stepfather owed money, was
- 6:18Speaker 1: afraid if he called he wouldn't get his bet in.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I can't confirm that that was the case, but that's
- 6:22Speaker 1: just my suspicion. I should probably ask him. I think
- 6:24Speaker 1: he's going to listen to this episode. Maybe he'll tell me.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Gambling is, of course all about risk, and as fun
- 6:31Speaker 1: as it is for me and my family, it's not
- 6:33Speaker 1: really about the risk.
- 6:34Speaker 2: For me.
- 6:35Speaker 1: It's about socializing. It's about having something to connect us
- 6:38Speaker 1: beyond just the games. On Sunday and Lord helped the
- 6:42Speaker 1: New England Patriots this year. With this team, we were
- 6:44Speaker 1: going to need betting more than ever to keep things interesting.
- 6:46Speaker 1: But back to the risk and most other aspects in life.
- 6:49Speaker 1: I value risk. I am attracted to risk as someone
- 6:52Speaker 1: who owns his own business. There's a certain level of
- 6:54Speaker 1: risk involved, and as scary as things sometimes become, this
- 6:58Speaker 1: kind of risk kills me as a writer.
- 7:01Speaker 2: As an artist.
- 7:02Speaker 1: There is also a certain amount of risk that one
- 7:05Speaker 1: must take if you're going to be any good anyway,
- 7:07Speaker 1: if you're going to have a voice, and if you
- 7:09Speaker 1: strive for an original point of view, if you want
- 7:11Speaker 1: to leave something behind that outlives you. The only way
- 7:14Speaker 1: to do that is to take chances creatively, to try
- 7:16Speaker 1: to create something net new, to try and express a
- 7:19Speaker 1: novel idea.
- 7:21Speaker 2: There's a risk in that if you.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Fail, you can sometimes look like an asshole, or worse,
- 7:26Speaker 1: you can look derivative. Taking a chance on making something
- 7:29Speaker 1: new is difficult. It's easy to do something that's been
- 7:33Speaker 1: done before. Okay, you know, it's hard writing tumbling dice
- 7:38Speaker 1: coming up with a lyric like I'm all sixes and
- 7:41Speaker 1: sevens and nines like Mick Jagger did, a lyric that
- 7:44Speaker 1: at face value makes little sense at all, but a
- 7:47Speaker 1: lyric that Mick Jagger knew would make sense to the
- 7:50Speaker 1: record buying public, perhaps because it made sense to his
- 7:53Speaker 1: Heroin zonked out guitar player Keith Richards. This gave Mick
- 7:56Speaker 1: the confidence he needed to take the creative risk.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Who knows.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Whatever the case, it was one of many risks Mick
- 8:01Speaker 1: and Keith took on that album. Tumbling Dice might be
- 8:05Speaker 1: the greatest song on what might be the greatest rock
- 8:07Speaker 1: and roll record ever, The Rolling Stones Exile on Main Street,
- 8:12Speaker 1: a record that was made on the run from tax authorities.
- 8:15Speaker 1: The Stones, the biggest rock band on the planet at
- 8:17Speaker 1: the time, exiled in a foreign country, making a record
- 8:20Speaker 1: while trying to avoid a risk, risking it. That kind
- 8:23Speaker 1: of risk I can relate to for some reason. Maybe
- 8:26Speaker 1: it's ego, maybe it's pride, I don't know. By taking
- 8:29Speaker 1: my hard earned money, not as my family has done,
- 8:31Speaker 1: but as the larger than life characters from this week's
- 8:34Speaker 1: episode on the NFL's Mafia influenced past like they did
- 8:38Speaker 1: and wagering it illegally on games that they were also
- 8:42Speaker 1: illegally trying to influence. That level of risk, that level
- 8:46Speaker 1: of corruption solely for monetary gain. That does not appeal
- 8:50Speaker 1: to me, but it makes for a great story, and
- 8:54Speaker 1: I hope you check it out.
- 8:55Speaker 2: If you haven't, already.
- 8:57Speaker 1: That's all relative to the most recent episode that we
- 9:00Speaker 1: just did, the one I mentioned that I've been talking
- 9:01Speaker 1: about the NFL's corrupt origins. Okay, it's just behind this
- 9:04Speaker 1: episode and the feed. Next week's episode is on an
- 9:07Speaker 1: entirely different subject. On River Phoenix, I believe we refer
- 9:11Speaker 1: to him in the episode as a once in a
- 9:13Speaker 1: lifetime talent and or once in a generation talent, I
- 9:16Speaker 1: should say, and I believe that it's hard for me
- 9:19Speaker 1: to think of another actor from the nineties, another young
- 9:21Speaker 1: actor who was as talented as River Phoenix.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Maybe maybe Leo, maybe Johnny Depp, but I don't know.
- 9:29Speaker 1: River Phoenix was special, and it's fun to think about
- 9:31Speaker 1: what roles he might have taken on as he grew
- 9:33Speaker 1: into manhood. And I bet if River lived, Leonardo DiCaprio's
- 9:38Speaker 1: career would probably look a lot different right now. But
- 9:41Speaker 1: this is all for next week. So just when you're
- 9:44Speaker 1: listening to the River Phoenix episode, be thinking of this question,
- 9:48Speaker 1: who is the greatest actor of the nineteen ninety sub question,
- 9:52Speaker 1: what Leonardo DiCaprio roles do you think would have went
- 9:55Speaker 1: to River Phoenix had he lived? Call me and let
- 9:58Speaker 1: me know. Six point seven. I know six six six
- 10:01Speaker 1: three eight, Leave me a voicemail, send me a text.
- 10:03Speaker 1: You can also reach me at disgrace lampod as well
- 10:06Speaker 1: on Instagram, X and Facebook. Keep me with some answers, guys.
- 10:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a quick break and I'll be back
- 10:11Speaker 1: on the other side with your answers to last week's
- 10:14Speaker 1: question of the week. All right, guys, we are back
- 10:35Speaker 1: with your phone calls and your text on this week's
- 10:37Speaker 1: question of the week on the most despicable athlete you
- 10:40Speaker 1: can come up with. Of course, we bring this up
- 10:42Speaker 1: in reference to this week's episode on the NFL and
- 10:45Speaker 1: all the all the transgressions and all the nasty little bits,
- 10:50Speaker 1: and all the dirty little secrets, and all the unexplained
- 10:53Speaker 1: deaths and the murders and all the stuff that went
- 10:56Speaker 1: down in this episode we wanted to hear. I asked you, guys,
- 11:00Speaker 1: from your estimation, who are the most disgraceful athletes in
- 11:04Speaker 1: the history of sports. Let's check in with Kathy in
- 11:07Speaker 1: the nine to seven one.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Hi, Jake, this is Kathy from Portland, Oregon, and I
- 11:12Speaker 3: have to say the all time worst most despicable athlete
- 11:16Speaker 3: not just the NFL, but all time worse. It has
- 11:19Speaker 3: to be the Atlanta Falcons, Michael Vick from his two
- 11:23Speaker 3: thousand and seven dog fighting case, and Sandy absolutely worse.
- 11:28Speaker 3: So just my opinion. Looking forward to the episode, and
- 11:32Speaker 3: I'll talk to you later.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Bye, Kathy, love the voicemail. Thanks for get in touch.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Yes, I hear you on Michael Vick for sure, you know,
- 11:41Speaker 1: for me, you know, we do mention Michael Vick in
- 11:44Speaker 1: the past episode on the NFL. But for me, and
- 11:48Speaker 1: that's horrible. You know, I'm very familiar with the Michael
- 11:51Speaker 1: Vick case. I don't even like thinking about it.
- 11:52Speaker 2: It's so bad.
- 11:53Speaker 1: There's something about the torture of animals that I just
- 11:56Speaker 1: no one wants to put their head into.
- 11:58Speaker 2: But for me, if I'm having to pull one.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Sports star from the history of sports, to me, and
- 12:06Speaker 1: perhaps it's because of where I'm from, for me, it's
- 12:10Speaker 1: it's Aaron Hernandez. There was something just so chilling about
- 12:14Speaker 1: that story when it was happening, when it was unfolding
- 12:16Speaker 1: in real time, when we were getting all of those details,
- 12:20Speaker 1: and at first it was the murder of Odin Lloyd,
- 12:22Speaker 1: and then we learned there were more murders in the
- 12:25Speaker 1: cold blooded nature of this guy, the way that he
- 12:30Speaker 1: seemed to just unravel into complete psychopathy. Is that a word? Psychopathy?
- 12:36Speaker 1: It sounded smart coming out of my mouth. We're just
- 12:38Speaker 1: gonna go with it. Really freaked me the fuck out.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I gotta say, it really freaked me out. And to me,
- 12:44Speaker 1: there's something just like I said, it's just chilling about
- 12:47Speaker 1: that story. You know, we could say O. J. Simpson
- 12:50Speaker 1: as well, but I'm putting OJ aside. It's just almost
- 12:52Speaker 1: too big of a story. It's it's too big to
- 12:54Speaker 1: even be a sports story. It's a cultural.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Phenomenon that that that.
- 12:59Speaker 1: OJ Simpson story on the same subject the four six'
- 13:03Speaker 1: nine text In, Hey, jake if you want something different
- 13:06Speaker 1: for your disgrace sports, figure check out this, Dude Robert Roser.
- 13:10Speaker 1: ROSIER i don't know how to pronounce That. ROSIER i
- 13:14Speaker 1: know this. Story it's. Wild we're going to bring it
- 13:16Speaker 1: to you In, disgraceland So i'm not gonna burn it.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Here but four six.' nine i like the way.

- 13:27Speaker 4: Going On it's tony from the two. Oh six let

- 13:51Speaker 4: to Lana del? Rey song they just put you in
- 13:53Speaker 4: a mood Like a, for me it's. SUMMERTIME sadness i
