Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Lisa, it would appear the times, they are a-changing.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Yes.
- 0:04Speaker 3: Who went on a Contiki tour back in the day?
- 0:07Speaker 1: Did you?
- 0:08Speaker 3: No, I did not.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Oh, Chippin did.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Yeah, Chippin did.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I did, yeah, 1996 around America.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Yeah, wow. I actually never went.
- 0:15Speaker 2: On one either.
- 0:16Speaker 3: I didn't because, you know, I was busy studying.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Were you?
- 0:21Speaker 1: Oh, you were studying. Well, I travelled, but I just
- 0:23Speaker 1: never did it with Contiki. Not then, later. No.
- 0:27Speaker 3: How much do you remember, Chippin?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Not a hell of a lot. There are actual holidays
- 0:30Speaker 2: I don't remember.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Which is what Contiki was famous for.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Well, it was.
- 0:36Speaker 1: And I do emphasize the word was.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I went to Lake Tahoe once, but I actually don't
- 0:40Speaker 2: remember going there. Really?
- 0:44Speaker 1: Then maybe you never went there.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Evidently, the days of late nights, holiday hookups and piling
- 0:51Speaker 3: back onto the bus the next day, hungover, to see
- 0:54Speaker 3: the landmarks of Europe, America and Lake Tahoe, Gen Z
- 0:59Speaker 3: don't want that.
- 1:01Speaker 2: It's dwindling.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Instead, they want to hike the Dolomites or run through
- 1:06Speaker 3: Rome and film their OOTDs.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Their what? Is that something you catch on a Contiki tour?
- 1:13Speaker 2: I do.
- 1:14Speaker 3: There was a penicillin for it in our day. But no,
- 1:17Speaker 3: an OOTD is my outfit of the day. And it
- 1:21Speaker 3: involves people uploading what they're wearing onto social media. So
- 1:25Speaker 3: Contiki is pivoting appropriately. They're rebranding things. So much has
- 1:33Speaker 3: changed for how 18 to 35-year-olds want to travel. The
- 1:38Speaker 3: folk at Contiki say there is definitely a solid trend
- 1:42Speaker 3: towards less alcohol consumption. Because they want to be getting
- 1:45Speaker 3: up the next morning and doing a run through Rome.
- 1:48Speaker 3: And then they might go out, say, three or four
- 1:50Speaker 3: nights later. They said, don't get us wrong. People still
- 1:54Speaker 3: love going out, but it's not the number one reason
- 1:57Speaker 3: they're here anymore.
- 1:59Speaker 4: So you're saying that Grandma on the Trafalgar tour is
- 2:01Speaker 4: actually boozing up more than the grandkids are?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
- 2:05Speaker 3: My mum loved a backroads tour.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Definitely.
- 2:08Speaker 3: There was more being consumed on that, in the backroads,
- 2:11Speaker 3: than on the Dolomites hike. So they said they've launched
- 2:16Speaker 3: the Dolomites hiking trip and cannot keep up with demand.
- 2:21Speaker 3: They're adding departures left, right and centre. And yeah, so
- 2:25Speaker 3: they still want to go out. They still want to
- 2:26Speaker 3: have a good time, but not every night because they
- 2:29Speaker 3: have big plans for the morning in their OOTD.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Wow.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So what happened?
- 2:37Speaker 2: What happened?
- 2:40Speaker 1: Looks maxing. Oh, is that what it is?
- 2:42Speaker 3: Yes, that's, you know, word of the year.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah, maxing with two Xs.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it all comes in, too.
- 2:47Speaker 3: They're all about the wellness.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So when I toured, I did lots of the sightseeing
- 2:52Speaker 1: as well.
- 2:52Speaker 4: I did, you know, like adventurous stuff and that, but
- 2:55Speaker 4: we still went out every night.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Well, this is it. We did both.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I know people that still managed to run through Rome
- 3:03Speaker 3: after a whole bottle of lemon juice.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Here's my question.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah. Here's my question.
- 3:11Speaker 3: What are they even doing on a Contiki tour? Aren't
- 3:13Speaker 3: they complaining about boomers taking all the housing and they
- 3:17Speaker 3: can never get a mortgage?
- 3:18Speaker 2: Oh, here we go. Shouldn't they be home saving? Here
- 3:20Speaker 2: we go.
- 3:21Speaker 1: It's the smashed ammo argument coming. How can you afford
- 3:26Speaker 1: a Contiki tour? Contiki tours.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Oh, you've just.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Anyway, I don't know.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Anyway, apparently Contiki said it's a stereotype of the old days,
- 3:35Speaker 4: the fun days, that they actually want to get rid
- 3:37Speaker 4: of anyway, so.
- 3:39Speaker 1: So they're moving away from it, but I don't know.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I don't understand.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Each to their own.
- 3:44Speaker 1: I don't understand.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Whatever floats your OOTD.
- 3:47Speaker 1: What good's a holiday if you can remember it?
