- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host Mark Kenyan. Today in the show, we're here
- 0:19Speaker 1: for rut Fresh Radio, in which we're getting updates from
- 0:22Speaker 1: hunters all across the country on the latest deer activity,
- 0:26Speaker 1: current conditions, and the tactics that can work for you.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Right now, all right, welcome to another episode of the
- 0:40Speaker 1: Wired Hunt podcast, brought to you by on X and UH.
- 0:44Speaker 1: It's a rout Fresh radio day. We are still on
- 0:48Speaker 1: it getting updates from all across the country on what's
- 0:51Speaker 1: happening in the white Tail woods. And at this time
- 0:55Speaker 1: of the year, it's not really you know, rut related,
- 0:59Speaker 1: it's going to be more are so weather related, It's
- 1:02Speaker 1: going to be more so what's the food source, deer
- 1:05Speaker 1: feeding on different things like that, because we're we're into
- 1:08Speaker 1: their late season. This is this is that time of
- 1:11Speaker 1: year where if you've got certain things in your favor,
- 1:13Speaker 1: you could be in for some great hunts. If you
- 1:15Speaker 1: don't have those things in your favor, it might be
- 1:17Speaker 1: really rough. Um, something that's nice to have in your
- 1:21Speaker 1: favor is to have some friends that have got a
- 1:25Speaker 1: primo property that they invite you to go hunt and
- 1:29Speaker 1: and and chase and explore big bucks on and Spencer.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I here, that's what you have been up to recently?
- 1:35Speaker 1: Have you been putting together a beautiful case study for
- 1:38Speaker 1: us and how to kill a big, old, mega giant
- 1:41Speaker 1: buck in December? Ah? Man? After this last week, Um,
- 1:46Speaker 1: it seems pretty simple. So I just got home from Kansas. UM.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I was haunting with our friends Nate and Thomas Crick
- 1:54Speaker 1: from Identical Jaw. You've heard them on rut Fresh radio before,
- 1:57Speaker 1: maybe even on the regular podcast. I don't know if
- 1:59Speaker 1: they have been on an episode or not, Mark Um,
- 2:02Speaker 1: but they they bought um eighty acres in Kansas and
- 2:06Speaker 1: decided they were going to turn into a deer mecca.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Have you ever heard of anybody doing anything like that? Mark?
- 2:12Speaker 1: You know, I've heard someone trying to do it in
- 2:15Speaker 1: a slightly less interesting state than Kansas. Um. They did,
- 2:18Speaker 1: all right, but maybe not as big of bucks as
- 2:21Speaker 1: the Kansas eighty. Sure yep, So those guys might be
- 2:25Speaker 1: something that rhymes with back forth it that's right, that's right.
- 2:29Speaker 1: So those guys invited me down to come and hunt
- 2:31Speaker 1: their Kansas ad property this fall. And so I went
- 2:34Speaker 1: down there for gone season, and now I came home
- 2:39Speaker 1: with my biggest buck of the year. You know, from
- 2:42Speaker 1: a tactics standpoint, we knew that there was going to
- 2:46Speaker 1: be good movement here. These guys have had this property
- 2:48Speaker 1: for a few years, and they were telling me that
- 2:50Speaker 1: last December and last January, their trail cameras had big
- 2:55Speaker 1: bucks um like damn near every day in December and January.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And it's for one big reason. They had the best food.
- 3:03Speaker 1: While everyone else um had picked corn and picked soybeans,
- 3:07Speaker 1: these guys had standing soybeans, they had clover, and they
- 3:11Speaker 1: had brassicas, and the deer really wanted to be there.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Um And and their trail cameras almost function as many
- 3:18Speaker 1: people's do doing the row when new new bucks are
- 3:20Speaker 1: showing up, and you're like learning about these bucks that
- 3:23Speaker 1: are in the neighborhood and they're just like passing through
- 3:25Speaker 1: the property. Well, for them, that happens right now because
- 3:28Speaker 1: they have the best food. Um And and that's how
- 3:31Speaker 1: we ended up killing this deer. We killed him on
- 3:33Speaker 1: the fifth night, and we'd hunted every day in morning
- 3:37Speaker 1: and evening, and after the second morning, we had kind
- 3:39Speaker 1: of decided like, we probably shouldn't even be in here
- 3:43Speaker 1: in the morning. This property just doesn't set up well
- 3:46Speaker 1: to kill a buck in the morning. December morning hunts
- 3:50Speaker 1: are already hard enough the way it is, even when
- 3:52Speaker 1: you have like a manicured property for white tails, it's
- 3:55Speaker 1: still really hard to do. So after that second morning,
- 3:58Speaker 1: we're like, we're just going to do more harm and
- 4:00Speaker 1: good if we're in here, So we're gonna leave it
- 4:02Speaker 1: alone in the mornings. And then I went hunted some
- 4:03Speaker 1: public ground nearby um. But each evening the deer did
- 4:08Speaker 1: what we wanted them to. They showed up to this
- 4:10Speaker 1: beans and brassicas plot. They were looking for what was
- 4:13Speaker 1: the best food in the area, and we were waiting
- 4:17Speaker 1: their form. We knew logically that if we were there
- 4:20Speaker 1: every single night, at some point the mature buck was
- 4:22Speaker 1: going to slip up and show up in daylight. And
- 4:24Speaker 1: that's what happened. How what kind of like quantity of
- 4:28Speaker 1: food are we talking like? So something that people often
- 4:31Speaker 1: ask is is how much good food d you need
- 4:33Speaker 1: to actually draw deer in the way that these guys
- 4:36Speaker 1: were able to? Are we talking him half acre food
- 4:38Speaker 1: plot or is this twenty acres of food? So this,
- 4:42Speaker 1: if you look at aerial, it looks pretty insignificant because
- 4:46Speaker 1: you're surrounded by thousands and thousands of acres of egg land.
- 4:51Speaker 1: But when all that egg land is suddenly picked over, um,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and there's not much around. All the deer came to
- 4:57Speaker 1: this property and they had three different plots. Two of
- 5:00Speaker 1: them were pretty small, like less than a half acre,
- 5:03Speaker 1: and the one that we ended up hunting was three
- 5:05Speaker 1: and a half acres. That was all it took to
- 5:07Speaker 1: like draw in all these deer from all over this neighborhood.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And when you say all these deer, I mean, are
- 5:13Speaker 1: you seeing five deer and night? Are you seeing fifteen
- 5:15Speaker 1: deer and night? What kind of quantity? Yeah, five to fifteen.
- 5:20Speaker 1: They had said that their deer density is kind of low.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Right there. They had some of the q d m
- 5:25Speaker 1: A s q d m A guys come out and
- 5:27Speaker 1: walk their property and looked at their trail cameras and
- 5:30Speaker 1: sort of assess the deal. And they had told him
- 5:32Speaker 1: that they were shocked by um, the lack of deer
- 5:36Speaker 1: that were kind of in the area. Now, this property
- 5:38Speaker 1: used to be a cattle property. Deer kind of have
- 5:41Speaker 1: right like a shared memory of an area, And so
- 5:44Speaker 1: there could be five and a half six and a
- 5:45Speaker 1: half yield bucks walking around that have never known this
- 5:48Speaker 1: property as anything other than a cattle property. So while
- 5:52Speaker 1: this December, you know, we were only seeing five fifteen
- 5:55Speaker 1: deer a night out there, I could see in five
- 5:58Speaker 1: years for these guys that it's double that number, just
- 6:01Speaker 1: because more and more dear are going to know about
- 6:03Speaker 1: this and they're going to be there for him. Yeah.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Another question I had for you, and it's related to
- 6:08Speaker 1: that whole December morning thing. You know, we've talked about
- 6:11Speaker 1: this in past episodes in past years, UM, but a
- 6:14Speaker 1: lot of people wonder like should I be hunting the
- 6:16Speaker 1: mornings at this time of the year. Um. In this case,
- 6:19Speaker 1: you said that it was just you're you're maybe doing
- 6:22Speaker 1: more harm than good. Can you elaborate on why this
- 6:25Speaker 1: spot was not setting up well for a late season
- 6:28Speaker 1: morning hunt. I'm I'm not even sure like what a
- 6:31Speaker 1: good property sets up at sets up as as a
- 6:35Speaker 1: late season morning hunt. I think ideally, if you wanted
- 6:39Speaker 1: to have a good late season morning set, you would
- 6:43Speaker 1: need some sort of distance between where they're betting and
- 6:46Speaker 1: where their food is. Um. So if I were to
- 6:49Speaker 1: think about um, like creating a property, you would be
- 6:53Speaker 1: some food like they had, which is being Subraska's, and
- 6:56Speaker 1: then maybe like some crp between that food and timber
- 7:01Speaker 1: um where they have to kind of pass through every
- 7:03Speaker 1: single morning. Now, this property didn't have that. It was
- 7:06Speaker 1: straight timber right to the food, and so deer would
- 7:10Speaker 1: pop out and they would be on top of you,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and so it was just like such a tiny window
- 7:16Speaker 1: where the deer would be visible before they'd be going
- 7:18Speaker 1: off to bed. Even when you have like a great
- 7:21Speaker 1: property like this, there's just very few situations, I think,
- 7:25Speaker 1: where you're gonna find like a really good set up
- 7:29Speaker 1: in December for white tails. Yeah, it's tough. There's there's
- 7:33Speaker 1: not a whole lot of room for air at this
- 7:35Speaker 1: point in the season, especially in those mornings. Um. So
- 7:38Speaker 1: I'm glad that persistence paid off for you. You You got
- 7:41Speaker 1: you gotta walk me through the details at least of
- 7:43Speaker 1: the last night. So you sat the same being plot
- 7:46Speaker 1: five nights in a row. Uh, tell me the exact setup, Like,
- 7:50Speaker 1: how were you set up in relation to where you
- 7:52Speaker 1: on the opposite side from the betting, where you on
- 7:54Speaker 1: the same side of the field as the betting. You know,
- 7:57Speaker 1: did these were the deer flooding out there the whole
- 8:00Speaker 1: right or was it the last two minutes of the
- 8:02Speaker 1: day kind of thing? What the hell did this buck
- 8:04Speaker 1: look like? Spencer? Paint me a picture? Okay, So before
- 8:08Speaker 1: I got down there, these guys were sending me some
- 8:09Speaker 1: trail camp pictures, like here's some of the bucks that
- 8:11Speaker 1: are around. But keep in mind that again, new deer
- 8:15Speaker 1: tend to show up for us. In December, one of
- 8:17Speaker 1: the last trail camp photo was they sent there, like,
- 8:19Speaker 1: this is one of our o G bucks. This is
- 8:21Speaker 1: one that's been around since we bought the property two
- 8:25Speaker 1: years ago. We would love if you were able to
- 8:27Speaker 1: kill this buck, but we've only seen him in person
- 8:30Speaker 1: one time ever, and that was in July of this year.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Other than that, they're very familiar with this deer. It's
- 8:35Speaker 1: maybe one of the deer they're most familiar with. Um
- 8:38Speaker 1: they had never really laid eyes on him in season,
- 8:41Speaker 1: so that was like the buck we hope to kill.
- 8:44Speaker 1: But um man, I wasn't gonna let like any four
- 8:48Speaker 1: and a half year old four by four walk by.
- 8:50Speaker 1: If they gave me an opportunity I was gonna kill
- 8:52Speaker 1: it on the last hunt, those four by fours. I've
- 8:55Speaker 1: got to know it's dangerous to walk past year because
- 8:58Speaker 1: that's like your kryptonite. Man. Yeah, I I don't. I'm
- 9:03Speaker 1: gonna need to kill a hell of a lot more
- 9:05Speaker 1: of him before I see you on and I'm like, no,
- 9:08Speaker 1: I'm not gonna shoot it. Uh. And that wasn't the
- 9:10Speaker 1: case in Kansas. If one slipped up in front of me,
- 9:12Speaker 1: I was gonna kill him. So so you did you
- 9:15Speaker 1: end up seeing some bucks like that? Though? I feel
- 9:17Speaker 1: like on Instagram I saw that you were seeing some shooters,
- 9:20Speaker 1: but like too far out of range or not quite
- 9:21Speaker 1: a shot or what was the deal of that. So
- 9:24Speaker 1: Nate and Tom have only ever bow hunted deer. They
- 9:27Speaker 1: have never gun hunted. Um, so me rolling in with
- 9:30Speaker 1: a rifle was pretty foreign to them, and I had
- 9:33Speaker 1: explained to them. I was like, um, to kill a
- 9:38Speaker 1: deer with a gun, you basically just need to lay
- 9:41Speaker 1: eyes on them, like a rifle hunt ends where a
- 9:44Speaker 1: bow hunt begins. And so when we're overlooking this three
- 9:47Speaker 1: and a half acre plot, and if we set up
- 9:50Speaker 1: in the middle of it, and even if there's a
- 9:52Speaker 1: marginal wind. We just need a buck to like get
- 9:55Speaker 1: his front hoof in the food plot and I can
- 9:57Speaker 1: kill him. It can just end right there. Um. So like, okay,
- 10:01Speaker 1: that's great. Um. So we we ended up setting up
- 10:04Speaker 1: with some marginal winds because I'm like, we we just
- 10:07Speaker 1: need him to like show up. And so the first night,
- 10:10Speaker 1: a buck just shows up and then he slips away
- 10:13Speaker 1: into the team, right, don't get a shot. The second night,
- 10:16Speaker 1: two more um what we identified as mature bucks that
- 10:19Speaker 1: I would have killed, did the same thing, just like
- 10:21Speaker 1: showed up, almost got that front hoof in the paw,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and then disappeared after like, you know, ten seconds. Because
- 10:28Speaker 1: we were kind of hunting these marginal winds, and we
- 10:30Speaker 1: threw up a ground blind in his spot that there
- 10:32Speaker 1: hadn't been. Um. So the first two evenings we just
- 10:36Speaker 1: had the deer two suspicious. The fifth night, though the
- 10:39Speaker 1: deer had finally been fine with the blind. They were
- 10:43Speaker 1: showing up earlier. Um, they would walk, you know, within
- 10:46Speaker 1: twenty yards of the blind. They just didn't care about it.
- 10:49Speaker 1: And so when I say we had first club or
- 10:52Speaker 1: when we had close calls, um, we did because we
- 10:55Speaker 1: laid eyes on them. But I was I was exaggerating
- 10:58Speaker 1: a bit. We need to lay eyes on them, plus
- 10:59Speaker 1: get like ten seconds um where I can where I
- 11:02Speaker 1: can get the scope on him. So it was close.
- 11:04Speaker 1: It was close. On the fifth night, we had only
- 11:08Speaker 1: seen but we'd seen nothing up until sunset, absolutely nothing.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Ten minutes after sunset, one roll one small buck rolls
- 11:15Speaker 1: in um. And then we had sunset at five or
- 11:18Speaker 1: excuse me, shooting light ended at five. And and here's
- 11:21Speaker 1: what happened between five twenty and five twenty six. We
- 11:26Speaker 1: had eight more dear roll into the field and when
- 11:28Speaker 1: do do do do do do? Young buck? Um? And
- 11:34Speaker 1: then the buck that I ended up killing, which we
- 11:37Speaker 1: think is this five and a half year old buck.
- 11:38Speaker 1: He's a four by four but he's got all kinds
- 11:41Speaker 1: of jock. He has fifteen scoreable points. Um. He is
- 11:45Speaker 1: incredibly narrow. He only has um eleven and a half
- 11:49Speaker 1: inches for a with Yeah, this is just like a
- 11:53Speaker 1: straight up rack. And I think if you maybe like
- 11:56Speaker 1: caught a clinch to this buck in the timber at
- 11:58Speaker 1: some point he was just looking, you'd be like, oh,
- 12:01Speaker 1: you know, a young buck or whatever. But because we
- 12:03Speaker 1: had so many trail camp pictures of him, um, and
- 12:05Speaker 1: we had a chance to see in broadside and stuff. Um,
- 12:08Speaker 1: we we knew what he was. And so he rolled
- 12:11Speaker 1: out into the beans with about two minutes of shooting
- 12:14Speaker 1: light left. And this was finally the buck that allowed
- 12:17Speaker 1: us to lay our eyes on him plus give us
- 12:19Speaker 1: that ten seconds. So he rolled out too the beans
- 12:22Speaker 1: about fifty yards from where we had the blind sent up,
- 12:25Speaker 1: and he was walking quartering away. He had someplace he
- 12:29Speaker 1: wanted to be and there was some specific spot in
- 12:32Speaker 1: nebrassicas of the beans that he wanted to get to
- 12:34Speaker 1: to feed. Um, and I shot him about seventy yards
- 12:38Speaker 1: and he ran to the edge of the food plot
- 12:40Speaker 1: and died. And that was my Kansas hunt. Yeah. Wow,
- 12:45Speaker 1: you kind of couldn't write it up much better. I
- 12:47Speaker 1: mean you had a little drama and then he had
- 12:50Speaker 1: to wait all the way to the fifth day, so
- 12:51Speaker 1: it felt like you worked for it. But then, uh,
- 12:54Speaker 1: the success finally arrived and he died in sight. I
- 12:56Speaker 1: mean that's a if. Ever, there wasn't editors story coming together.
- 13:01Speaker 1: That's that's it right there, Spencer, exactly. And and we
- 13:05Speaker 1: had kind of went into that last night. Um, and
- 13:08Speaker 1: this is something you're gonna here talked about in this
- 13:09Speaker 1: week's episode of Red Fresh Radio, the weather hasn't been great.
- 13:13Speaker 1: The weather forecast coming up doesn't look great. And what
- 13:16Speaker 1: I mean by that is just like very monotonous um
- 13:20Speaker 1: above average temperatures. Where we were at in Kansas coming
- 13:23Speaker 1: up here, it was gonna get into the low seventies
- 13:26Speaker 1: this week. On that Sunday though the high was like
- 13:29Speaker 1: forty three and the low was like twenty. We had
- 13:32Speaker 1: uh sort of a stronger north wind than what we've had.
- 13:35Speaker 1: We're like, this is is probably our best shot. Um,
- 13:39Speaker 1: you know, we're gonna be hunting for like the next
- 13:40Speaker 1: seven days if it doesn't happen tonight, but this is
- 13:43Speaker 1: probably the night and it all worked out. That's awesome, man,
- 13:48Speaker 1: that's right, that's right now. I know market in the
- 13:50Speaker 1: past you've talked a lot about like what is the
- 13:53Speaker 1: ideal weather in December and how that can change things,
- 13:56Speaker 1: So like what should hunters be crossing their fingers for
- 14:00Speaker 1: when they open up their weather app right now? Well,
- 14:03Speaker 1: you know, it's not terribly different than what you like
- 14:06Speaker 1: to see at the beginning of October or at the
- 14:09Speaker 1: end of October. Like I'd love to see a cold
- 14:11Speaker 1: front hitting just at this time of the year, you know,
- 14:14Speaker 1: instead of being you know, from seventy degrees to a
- 14:17Speaker 1: fifty degree day. You know, I'm looking for a thirty
- 14:20Speaker 1: five degree day dropping down to a ten degree day
- 14:23Speaker 1: or something. Obviously adjust that for wherever in the country
- 14:26Speaker 1: you live, but where we want the cold of the
- 14:27Speaker 1: temperatures the better. Uh. Usually higher bara metric pressures as
- 14:33Speaker 1: is the case you know all year, are indicative of
- 14:36Speaker 1: what you're getting after a big front like that pushes through.
- 14:39Speaker 1: So those days after the front hits where you've got
- 14:42Speaker 1: some bluebird skies, you've got that really cold weather. Finally,
- 14:46Speaker 1: maybe some snow fell. You know, the more snow the
- 14:49Speaker 1: better too. If you're in part of the country where
- 14:50Speaker 1: it gets snow, that's gonna be a really good thing
- 14:53Speaker 1: to get deer feeling like they have to feed. And
- 14:55Speaker 1: that's what you're counting on this time of year. As
- 14:57Speaker 1: you described, we need these deer to really feel the
- 15:00Speaker 1: russure to put the feedback on. Those are the nights
- 15:02Speaker 1: when more dear than usual move. It's those nights when
- 15:06Speaker 1: the big old buck that maybe doesn't want to move
- 15:08Speaker 1: in daylight a lot of the time, when he's gonna say, hey,
- 15:10Speaker 1: I gotta get going. Um, those are the days we're
- 15:12Speaker 1: gonna get that little extra push. So you know, I
- 15:15Speaker 1: don't I don't see anything like that coming down the
- 15:17Speaker 1: line for me in Michigan. But it's certainly what you
- 15:20Speaker 1: hope for. Yeah, And so with that said, you're gonna
- 15:24Speaker 1: hear a little bit of pessimism from our guests this week.
- 15:26Speaker 1: And who we talked to is Alex comp Stock from
- 15:28Speaker 1: White Til DNA in Minnesota, Hunter Forbes in Kentucky from
- 15:32Speaker 1: Southern White Tail Outfitters, and then in Oklahoma it's Clay
- 15:34Speaker 1: Forest from Stuart Ranch Outfitters, and then Bomartinic from East
- 15:38Speaker 1: meets West Hunt in Pennsylvania. So he just killed the
- 15:41Speaker 1: dandy out there, didn't he He did? That was um
- 15:45Speaker 1: like a megabuck for any part of the country. But
- 15:47Speaker 1: then when you consider there's probably not a corner bean
- 15:50Speaker 1: field um within hunterd miles of where he killed that
- 15:53Speaker 1: buck in the mountains of Pennsylvania, that's a giant. Yeah,
- 15:56Speaker 1: that's pretty awesome. Well, uh, I'm excited to hear more
- 15:59Speaker 1: about it him from him and all the rest of
- 16:01Speaker 1: the guys. So should we just get ready, you know,
- 16:03Speaker 1: hold on before we get to a Spencer, I have
- 16:06Speaker 1: to make a couple of plugs. Are you willing to
- 16:08Speaker 1: hear me out on that? Do your thing alright? Number
- 16:11Speaker 1: one back forty episodes are still coming out every Sunday.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Last weekend, my episode in which I kill my white
- 16:19Speaker 1: tail out on the back fort he came out, so
- 16:21Speaker 1: check that out. I got the drop time buck on
- 16:23Speaker 1: the ground. Finally, really cool hunt. Um. And then here
- 16:27Speaker 1: in a couple of days, our last episode of the
- 16:29Speaker 1: season will be coming out in which we brought the
- 16:32Speaker 1: Hunt giveaway winner and then a new hunter out to

- 17:23Speaker 1: on that we should be telling people about. Well, if
- 17:25Speaker 1: you want to see this buck that we just talked
- 17:27Speaker 1: about that I killed in Kansas, you can held over
- 17:29Speaker 1: my Instagram at Spencer new Hearth or check out the
- 17:33Speaker 1: twins that I was hunting with. That's Nate and Thomas
- 17:35Speaker 1: Crick and their Instagram handle is at identical draw wonderful. Alright, Spencer,
- 17:40Speaker 1: I'd say take it away, talk to you next week.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Mark sounds good, alright. And joining us online first is
- 17:47Speaker 1: Alex Comstock from Whitetail DNA in Minnesota. Now Alex in Minnesota.
- 17:52Speaker 1: What would you say the buck activity is ben lately
- 17:54Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten, Yeah, I'd say
- 17:57Speaker 1: lately has probably been about us three. It's been really
- 18:00Speaker 1: slow here um and right now conditions aren't really help.
- 18:04Speaker 1: It's been abnormally warm and we have really no snow,
- 18:08Speaker 1: which up here in northern Minnesota. The time of year,
- 18:10Speaker 1: it's usually cold and cold and snow helps with a
- 18:13Speaker 1: hunting in. Right now, we don't have either, so it's
- 18:15Speaker 1: been pretty slow. I know, you just helped a buddy
- 18:18Speaker 1: recover a book a few days ago. Tell us about
- 18:20Speaker 1: that set up, why you guys were there and why
- 18:22Speaker 1: that buck was there. Yeah, So that was my good
- 18:25Speaker 1: buddy Garrett, who I do pretty much all of my
- 18:27Speaker 1: all my hunting with here in Minnesota. And that was
- 18:30Speaker 1: the pretty much the one evening here in the past
- 18:32Speaker 1: week or so that that we've even seen a buck.
- 18:34Speaker 1: And it just happened to work out. He actually had
- 18:36Speaker 1: gone gone into a spot UM and did a hanging
- 18:40Speaker 1: hunt that we had identified the week before, and we
- 18:42Speaker 1: had hung a trail camera. We had a number of
- 18:44Speaker 1: bucks using the area UM pretty much all at night.
- 18:48Speaker 1: And what this spot is just a little there's kind
- 18:50Speaker 1: of like a little crp field that these deer kind
- 18:53Speaker 1: of filter through in the evenings and the mornings headed
- 18:56Speaker 1: to to food. And we pretty much set up um
- 19:00Speaker 1: just about fourty or fifty yards off that in the
- 19:02Speaker 1: timber and Garrett was able to catch catch out this
- 19:06Speaker 1: buck coming through headed out that way right at last sight.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I mean you shot it with I think two minutes
- 19:12Speaker 1: to spare or something. And uh, I was able to
- 19:14Speaker 1: put a new buck down that just showed up in
- 19:16Speaker 1: the area on camera about a week ago. Where do
- 19:19Speaker 1: you run most of your trail cameras in December? So
- 19:22Speaker 1: right now, if you know, if I can get them
- 19:23Speaker 1: over any type of food sources. And so for me
- 19:26Speaker 1: being up here in Minnesota, don't have um any agger
- 19:29Speaker 1: on hunt or anything like that. If you have that,
- 19:31Speaker 1: I would you recommend that. But I've got you know,
- 19:34Speaker 1: stuff in the timber such as buck thorn that a
- 19:37Speaker 1: lot of deer keenan on this time of year. Um.
- 19:40Speaker 1: But like I had said before, with the lack of
- 19:42Speaker 1: snow right now, deer really spread out in my area.
- 19:44Speaker 1: So it can be kind of challenging this time of
- 19:46Speaker 1: year when you're doing some in season scouting late season,
- 19:50Speaker 1: what sorts of things are you looking for? So pretty
- 19:52Speaker 1: much where I'm just trying to identify as where the
- 19:54Speaker 1: deer spending the most of their time feeding and then
- 19:57Speaker 1: where they're betting. So I am doing a lot of
- 19:59Speaker 1: in season scouting this time of year, um, especially if
- 20:02Speaker 1: conditions are ever changed. So for example, last year, in
- 20:05Speaker 1: the same area that I'm hunting now. We had two
- 20:07Speaker 1: ft of snow and so what the dealer were doing
- 20:09Speaker 1: last year is completely different than what they're doing now.
- 20:12Speaker 1: And so getting out there scouting, you know, we had
- 20:14Speaker 1: a little bit of snow where I can check to
- 20:16Speaker 1: see where, you know, trails that are being used frequently
- 20:20Speaker 1: are being used recently and doing a lot of moving around.
- 20:24Speaker 1: So I'm constantly out scouting right now, hanging new sets
- 20:27Speaker 1: and kind of do it not almost daily. If you
- 20:29Speaker 1: had some sort of weather event in Minnesota, would you
- 20:32Speaker 1: expect to see a shift in bedding and all I
- 20:35Speaker 1: would expect to see the shift in bedding if we
- 20:37Speaker 1: were to get a substantial amount of snow. So pretty
- 20:39Speaker 1: much Rye hunt is all on a essentially it's a
- 20:42Speaker 1: humongous hill and as there's no snow, deer can in
- 20:46Speaker 1: bed pretty much anywhere, and as we get more and
- 20:48Speaker 1: more snow and pushes them down this huge hill towards
- 20:51Speaker 1: the bottom, and that would definitely change things. Are you
- 20:54Speaker 1: doing any morning hunts in December? Um? I am not
- 20:57Speaker 1: doing a lot of morning hunts if it's if we're
- 20:59Speaker 1: going to get you know, right now, with it being
- 21:01Speaker 1: particularly warm, if we have any days where the low
- 21:04Speaker 1: is going to be pretty cold and it'll be a
- 21:06Speaker 1: lot warmer in the afternoon and it's gonna be in
- 21:08Speaker 1: the morning, I'll definitely try and get out for a
- 21:10Speaker 1: morning hunt. Is water focus for you at all in
- 21:12Speaker 1: northern Minnesota during late season? Um? Not really for me.
- 21:16Speaker 1: If there is usually at this time here, if there
- 21:19Speaker 1: is any type of water, it's all frozen over. Um.
- 21:22Speaker 1: And even where I'm at there's pretty much nothing for
- 21:24Speaker 1: water sources for me right now. Going forward then a
- 21:27Speaker 1: next week or so, what do you think that bucket
- 21:29Speaker 1: activity is going to be on a scale of one
- 21:31Speaker 1: to ten in Minnesota? I hope it can go up
- 21:34Speaker 1: a few takes, hopefully about a five or six. The
- 21:39Speaker 1: weather is supposed to be warm here for the next
- 21:41Speaker 1: few days, and it's supposed to start dropping and getting
- 21:43Speaker 1: down into the to the twenties with lows in the
- 21:47Speaker 1: around TENLA in twelve degrees. So I'm hoping that there's
- 21:50Speaker 1: no snow in the forecast, and I'm hoping the colder
- 21:52Speaker 1: temperatures will will help that that buck activity here the
- 21:54Speaker 1: next week or so. All right, Alex, I hope you
- 21:57Speaker 1: get that weather you're looking for good luck with what's
- 21:59Speaker 1: left your seas and then thanks for joining me, all right,
- 22:01Speaker 1: appreciate it, Thank you Spencer alright and joining us on
- 22:04Speaker 1: the line. Next is Hunter Forbes in Kentucky from Southern
- 22:07Speaker 1: White Tail Outfitters now Hunter in Kentucky. What would you say?
- 22:10Speaker 1: The bucket activity is ben lately on a scale of
- 22:12Speaker 1: one to ten, but so I'm not giving about a
- 22:14Speaker 1: four as of lately. Um, because of that, we really
- 22:18Speaker 1: hadn't had consistently cold weather. We finally got a little
- 22:21Speaker 1: bit of it. Um, deer just recovering from rifle season
- 22:24Speaker 1: and yeah, we're sitting at about a full right now. Um,
- 22:28Speaker 1: hoping to improve this next week. What is the idea
- 22:31Speaker 1: whether that you're looking for in Kentucky in December? Um,
- 22:35Speaker 1: the colder the better. In Kentucky you're allowed to bat them.
- 22:38Speaker 1: And between that and the food sources, you know, the colder,
- 22:41Speaker 1: the more activity you're gonna see. Um, we're going into
- 22:44Speaker 1: late musloader season this weekend, so we're just trying to
- 22:48Speaker 1: hunt food sources and colder it gets, the more they
- 22:52Speaker 1: got to eat. So that's kind of how we're playing it.
- 22:55Speaker 1: I know you run a lot of trail cameras there
- 22:57Speaker 1: on your properties. Where do you want those in the
- 22:59Speaker 1: late season. Yeah, it's sticking to food. It's pretty much
- 23:02Speaker 1: how we're playing it. We transition from mornings in November
- 23:07Speaker 1: um to just afternoons UM. Going from this point forward. Uh,
- 23:12Speaker 1: A lot of the key for us is access. You know,
- 23:14Speaker 1: a lot of leaves are off trees, um, a lot
- 23:17Speaker 1: of times are gonna bedding closer to food sources, and
- 23:20Speaker 1: so a lot of what we're doing is just playing
- 23:22Speaker 1: the access smart um getting in around lunch and sticking
- 23:26Speaker 1: it out the rest of the evening. So is there
- 23:28Speaker 1: a scenario in December on your properties where you'll be
- 23:31Speaker 1: hunting in the mornings. Uh. Once again, it goes back
- 23:33Speaker 1: to access. If you can, you know, sneaking the back
- 23:35Speaker 1: doors somewhere from them going from a food source back
- 23:38Speaker 1: to bank. Um, it's relevant. And also if you're noticing
- 23:41Speaker 1: on your camps you're seeing some bread activity a lot
- 23:43Speaker 1: of times that second run is it's starting to happen
- 23:46Speaker 1: right around this time. UM, And yeah it's possible. UM.
- 23:51Speaker 1: As a whole though, we try to just stick the afternoons.
- 23:54Speaker 1: But yeah, there's definitely some scenarios where you can make
- 23:56Speaker 1: it happen. You mentioned that the bedding seems to move
- 23:59Speaker 1: closer food. How close to your food sources are we
- 24:02Speaker 1: talking that these beds shift to It's kind of relevant
- 24:05Speaker 1: to cover and a lot of different factors. Um depends
- 24:08Speaker 1: how close, especially if you are baiting and you know
- 24:09Speaker 1: how close you're putting it too bedding um. But a
- 24:12Speaker 1: lot of times will be within a hundred yards UM.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Ideally you'd want to stretch them a little bit further
- 24:17Speaker 1: if you can play elevation, since you really don't have
- 24:21Speaker 1: the foliage on the trees and stuff to be able
- 24:23Speaker 1: to get in tight to that. Besides bait, what other
- 24:26Speaker 1: food sources are relevant? Right now? In Kentucky, all the
- 24:30Speaker 1: good farmers already have their crops out. It seems like,
- 24:33Speaker 1: so you're you got cut fields um. As far as
- 24:36Speaker 1: the corn of beans go, a lot of a lot
- 24:38Speaker 1: of the uh, the cut corn fields turn into wheat um.
- 24:43Speaker 1: And so those are gonna be a little bit better
- 24:44Speaker 1: on your warmer days. Um. It seems like they're more
- 24:48Speaker 1: sole than grain when it's cold. So there is cut
- 24:50Speaker 1: bean fields the corn fields um. And then like I said,
- 24:53Speaker 1: that wheat grown up. And then of course whatever food
- 24:56Speaker 1: plots you've done. Um. It seems like our Braskas are
- 24:58Speaker 1: just starting to be hit UM definitely well after we
- 25:02Speaker 1: had a couple a couple of good freezes last week.
- 25:05Speaker 1: So how do your set ups change if we have
- 25:07Speaker 1: a cold front versus a warm front in the late
- 25:09Speaker 1: season or do they both look the same. For the
- 25:12Speaker 1: most part, it's looking the same for us because we're
- 25:15Speaker 1: mixing up our food to have it all in one
- 25:17Speaker 1: um for instance, you know, putting grain out around those
- 25:20Speaker 1: weed fields around our food plots. Um, having the mix
- 25:23Speaker 1: of you know, your greens, um and your grain around
- 25:27Speaker 1: each other, so it's kind of all in one package. UM.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Kind of how we're playing it historically. Do you see
- 25:33Speaker 1: much of a secondary rout on your properties in Kentucky?
- 25:36Speaker 1: We actually do. We have a pretty high deer population,
- 25:39Speaker 1: a lot of dose UM. Wish it was a little
- 25:41Speaker 1: bit close to ratio, but it's just not pretty hard
- 25:44Speaker 1: to control for us, and so a lot of those
- 25:46Speaker 1: does don't get bread they are coming back in. So yeah,
- 25:49Speaker 1: it's it's definitely a real thing for us. And when
- 25:51Speaker 1: is that window that you're typically seeing that kind of
- 25:54Speaker 1: action right right around now? It's always traditionally around that
- 25:57Speaker 1: opening of the lazzlater season, which falls on Saturday for us,
- 26:02Speaker 1: you know. So yeah, I'm gonna say from right now,
- 26:04Speaker 1: being about the nights you know running onto around the well,
- 26:08Speaker 1: the fourteen is typically the uh, the peak of what
- 26:12Speaker 1: we see as far as the second rut gase, it
- 26:13Speaker 1: does very property property Like I said, wherever those hired
- 26:15Speaker 1: deal populations for us or wherever we see it. More
- 26:18Speaker 1: so going forward then in the sext week or so,
- 26:20Speaker 1: what do you think that buck activity is going to
- 26:22Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Kentucky?
- 26:25Speaker 1: We gotta cold front coming through. Looks like we got
- 26:28Speaker 1: some running Saturday, and that Sunday Monday looks pretty good.
- 26:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna give it, you know, sumthing up there and
- 26:32Speaker 1: around the seven um that should go on, the food
- 26:35Speaker 1: that should be on their feet, chasing a little bit
- 26:37Speaker 1: with that secondary rut. So yeah, feel feel good about
- 26:40Speaker 1: a seven Alright, hunter, Good luck to you when your
- 26:42Speaker 1: hunters in camp. Thanks for joining me, okay, specter, alright
- 26:47Speaker 1: and joining us on the line. Next is Clay Forest
- 26:49Speaker 1: from Stewart Ranch Outfitters in Oklahoma. Now, Clay in Oklahoma,
- 26:53Speaker 1: what would you say the buck activity has been lately?
- 26:55Speaker 1: On a scale of one to ten, I'm gonna give
- 26:58Speaker 1: it about a five right now. Uh. And the reason
- 27:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna do that is, you know, our rut for
- 27:03Speaker 1: the most part in the southern part of the state
- 27:05Speaker 1: is it's pretty much all the way down, um, and
- 27:09Speaker 1: a lot of bucks are kind of grouping back up
- 27:11Speaker 1: and and hidden food sources. So you know, for the
- 27:14Speaker 1: most part, bucks are kind of licking their wounds and uh,
- 27:17Speaker 1: kind of getting back to two food sources. So it's
- 27:20Speaker 1: it's not really really good, but it's not really really
- 27:22Speaker 1: bad though. I almost stick with that kind of number
- 27:25Speaker 1: a five, kind of mid mid range with activity in
- 27:28Speaker 1: Oklahoma right now, with that high density that you have
- 27:31Speaker 1: around your place, do you normally notice any kind of
- 27:34Speaker 1: a secondary rutting action? We do, Uh, we will see
- 27:39Speaker 1: a little bit of a of a secondary rut this
- 27:41Speaker 1: time of year and really push all the way into Christmas,
- 27:44Speaker 1: but it's really few and far between, and it's something
- 27:48Speaker 1: that I would never count on, uh if we were
- 27:50Speaker 1: if we were trying to focus on a on a
- 27:52Speaker 1: trophy animal. Um, it's just it's not anything that you
- 27:56Speaker 1: can kind of put your hat on. So this timing year,
- 27:59Speaker 1: we're really folk sent on food sources and getting to
- 28:03Speaker 1: where those bucks are trying to kind of regroup from
- 28:06Speaker 1: from the rut, you know, winding down that sort of thing.
- 28:09Speaker 1: So if it were me and if I you know,
- 28:11Speaker 1: with with with clients and hunting personally, we're really focusing
- 28:15Speaker 1: on and focus seeing on food sources. What are those
- 28:18Speaker 1: food sources that you're focused on? For us, we plan
- 28:23Speaker 1: about a hundred acres of small food plots and we
- 28:26Speaker 1: have uh turn ups planting in those, and then winter
- 28:30Speaker 1: wheat is a big food sources just in this area,
- 28:33Speaker 1: so a lot of farmers and rangers plant winter wheat
- 28:36Speaker 1: for for stalker cattle. So you're really focusing on those
- 28:40Speaker 1: winter wheat fields or are late season food plots or
- 28:43Speaker 1: we've got we can feed corn in this area too,
- 28:45Speaker 1: you know, that's where a baits stay. So corn feeders
- 28:48Speaker 1: are a source of food as well. But for the
- 28:51Speaker 1: most part, a lot of these deer don't get too
- 28:53Speaker 1: much about of corn and they're really focusing on that
- 28:55Speaker 1: that green source food that winter week turn ups, oats,
- 28:58Speaker 1: you know, anything that's sort of an act type field.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Are you doing any kind of morning setups in December?
- 29:04Speaker 1: We do um you for us in the morning. You
- 29:08Speaker 1: if you're going to especially to a big winter weeks field,
- 29:11Speaker 1: you gotta get in early because those deer are gonna
- 29:13Speaker 1: be there early. So we will get guys in forty
- 29:16Speaker 1: five minutes to an hour before day live, just because
- 29:18Speaker 1: we know there's gonna be deer on the field, so
- 29:20Speaker 1: we don't push them out completely. What is the ideal
- 29:24Speaker 1: weather that you're looking for in December in Oklahoma? Uh,
- 29:28Speaker 1: right now it's about seventies five degrees, So that's kind
- 29:31Speaker 1: of a loaded question. Um, honestly, just kind of right
- 29:36Speaker 1: around all that thirty five forty five degree mornings, fifty
- 29:40Speaker 1: degree afternoons, if we can get some weather coming in.
- 29:42Speaker 1: We've got a front coming in on Friday, so I'm
- 29:44Speaker 1: sure dear will be moving in front and behind that
- 29:47Speaker 1: with that pressure change. So really kind of just looking
- 29:49Speaker 1: for those fronts that come through and hunting in in
- 29:52Speaker 1: front of and behind those those coal fronts that are
- 29:54Speaker 1: blowing through. Um, and it seems like a day or
- 29:56Speaker 1: two after those fronts blows through, and whether kind of
- 29:59Speaker 1: nor belizes a little bit, we really have some good
- 30:01Speaker 1: success that next one or two days after the front
- 30:05Speaker 1: blows through. So really kind of focusing on those cold
- 30:07Speaker 1: front in the day or two after that following gun
- 30:10Speaker 1: season in December, do you notice any kind of shift
- 30:12Speaker 1: in bedding in Oklahoma? Not really, not on our place,
- 30:17Speaker 1: um and not like I'm just speaking for ourselves right now,
- 30:20Speaker 1: but our gear for the most parts stick to big,
- 30:23Speaker 1: tall native grass pastures for betting. U mean, you'll find
- 30:27Speaker 1: him with some of these siski flats in some little
- 30:29Speaker 1: thicker areas. But for the most part, betting doesn't really change,
- 30:32Speaker 1: uh for us as far as what mature dear does.
- 30:35Speaker 1: For that for that fact, where they bed um normally
- 30:39Speaker 1: from December all the way you know, back into the summertime.
- 30:42Speaker 1: So they're they're betting patterns typically don't change a whole lot.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Where are you running a lot of your trail cameras
- 30:48Speaker 1: right now? Foods horses, they're they're all back on food
- 30:51Speaker 1: right now, whether that be a feeder or just right
- 30:54Speaker 1: in the middle of the big food plot or or
- 30:56Speaker 1: wheat field. So I would have all of your on
- 31:00Speaker 1: all your cameras for information on on food sources. Has
- 31:03Speaker 1: signmaking pretty much gone cold for you? For the most part,
- 31:07Speaker 1: He's still seeing a little bit of uh, some some
- 31:10Speaker 1: fresh rubs, you know, maybe some fresh grapes that sort
- 31:12Speaker 1: of thing, with some little bit of post rud activity.
- 31:15Speaker 1: But again, it's not really anything that I would count
- 31:18Speaker 1: on as far as trying to get a mature to
- 31:20Speaker 1: year down. Um, it's just kind of that that post
- 31:22Speaker 1: secondary run, just those few deer that hadn't got a
- 31:25Speaker 1: dough bread or anything down. Is that sign making is
- 31:29Speaker 1: happening going forward? Then in this next week or so,
- 31:33Speaker 1: what do you think that buck activity is going to
- 31:34Speaker 1: be On a scale of one to ten in Oklahoma?
- 31:37Speaker 1: I'd be a little more optimistic. I probably push it
- 31:39Speaker 1: to around a seven. We've got a front coming in
- 31:42Speaker 1: and on Friday, and we're supposed to have a little
- 31:44Speaker 1: bit of weather on Friday and the Saturday, and then
- 31:46Speaker 1: some some nicer, more December like weather for Oklahoma in
- 31:49Speaker 1: the next week. So I think that's really gonna help.
- 31:52Speaker 1: I think they're really going to be focusing on food
- 31:54Speaker 1: and with that little pressure change, I think we we
- 31:56Speaker 1: should have some good activity in this next week or
- 31:59Speaker 1: ten days in this part of the state. Right Clay,
- 32:01Speaker 1: congrats to all the success your clients have had this year.
- 32:03Speaker 1: You guys have done an awesome job based on Instagram.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Good luck with lot's left of your season. Thanks for
- 32:08Speaker 1: joining me all right. Thanks been to appreciate it alright
- 32:11Speaker 1: and joining us on the line. Next is Bomartinic from
- 32:13Speaker 1: East meets West hunt in Pennsylvania, now bowin Pennsylvania. What
- 32:17Speaker 1: would you say the buck activity has been lately on
- 32:19Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten, Well, it depends on
- 32:22Speaker 1: where you're at, but I would say that the buck
- 32:24Speaker 1: activity and my area in northern Pennsylvania has been about
- 32:28Speaker 1: a seven. And I'll say that because I don't think
- 32:31Speaker 1: that normally they'd be moving on a seven. But with
- 32:34Speaker 1: the amount of hunters, with deer season coming in last
- 32:38Speaker 1: week so the rightful season, most hunters per square mile
- 32:42Speaker 1: anywhere at that time of year in the United States
- 32:45Speaker 1: here in Pennsylvania, and the deer moving because people are
- 32:48Speaker 1: moving them. So that's a little bit different than your
- 32:52Speaker 1: typical reasons for movement, but I think that made it
- 32:55Speaker 1: a little bit higher. Now, you just killed a mega
- 32:58Speaker 1: mountain white tail out there this last weekend during rifle season.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Tell us about that haunt, why you were there, and
- 33:04Speaker 1: why that buck was there. So it seems like with
- 33:07Speaker 1: hunting pressure in Pennsylvania and they in the mountains here
- 33:12Speaker 1: that they're either on the tops or in the bottom,
- 33:14Speaker 1: so that people don't like walking those steep side hills.
- 33:17Speaker 1: And from my my trail cameras and then just past knowledge,
- 33:22Speaker 1: they seemed to like to stick to those side hills,
- 33:24Speaker 1: especially with the pressure. So what we did was me
- 33:28Speaker 1: and my buddy Johnny went off on the point of
- 33:30Speaker 1: this hill on the edge of some thick hemlock cover.
- 33:33Speaker 1: The prevailing wind was coming across the top of the hill,
- 33:36Speaker 1: had some rising thirdwals. Everything was a perfect picture perfect
- 33:41Speaker 1: uh hunt as far as where that buck would be betted.
- 33:44Speaker 1: And we didn't know that specific deer was going to
- 33:46Speaker 1: be in there, but was hoping so. And just on
- 33:49Speaker 1: the edge of of that thick cover. Um My dad
- 33:52Speaker 1: came around the side of the hill and did a
- 33:54Speaker 1: little bit of a wind bump to him and a
- 33:56Speaker 1: deer stepped out at twenty yards from me, and I
- 33:59Speaker 1: was able to fo them right on the edge of
- 34:00Speaker 1: the open oak folks, and the thick came walked over.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Now I know in the past Bout we've interviewed you
- 34:06Speaker 1: for some articles on the meat eator dot com where
- 34:08Speaker 1: you've talked about how these bucks like to bed I
- 34:11Speaker 1: think on the upper third of hills in big woods.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Do you notice that same thing in late season? And
- 34:16Speaker 1: why do they want to be on that upper third? So, yeah,
- 34:20Speaker 1: it does depend So most of the time they like
- 34:23Speaker 1: to be in that upper third because they can have
- 34:25Speaker 1: that prevailing wind come across the top and they can
- 34:29Speaker 1: so they're covered from the back and they can see
- 34:31Speaker 1: down over the hill, but also get those gay time
- 34:34Speaker 1: thermals coming up and hitting them in the front, so
- 34:37Speaker 1: they're basically covered from all angles. And and also if
- 34:41Speaker 1: if something did come from behind them, they can just
- 34:43Speaker 1: bomb off the edge of the hill and get away
- 34:46Speaker 1: pretty pretty easily. As it gets in the late season,
- 34:49Speaker 1: I have noticed they kind of, um, they kind of
- 34:53Speaker 1: drop a little bit lower. Um it all spit all
- 34:55Speaker 1: depends on the food. But in the specific area. And
- 34:57Speaker 1: he was actually bedded more towards the in the middle ground,
- 35:01Speaker 1: so the probably towards the bottom of that upper one third,
- 35:05Speaker 1: and because that's where the acorns seemed to be lower.
- 35:07Speaker 1: So he could leave his the thick hemlock thermal cover
- 35:12Speaker 1: to protect him, you know, from the cold winds and
- 35:15Speaker 1: and everything else, and also just keeping out a sight
- 35:17Speaker 1: of people would also be able to take a few
- 35:20Speaker 1: steps and and be in the acorns within eight yards,
- 35:23Speaker 1: so you know, close proximity to food, and it seems
- 35:27Speaker 1: like they moved a little bit closer to the food
- 35:29Speaker 1: in the late season. What are the different types of
- 35:32Speaker 1: food sources that you're looking for this time of year
- 35:34Speaker 1: in Pennsylvania. The two main ones are if you can
- 35:38Speaker 1: find any red oaks that still have the acorns um
- 35:41Speaker 1: on the ground, that's it seems to be a hot
- 35:44Speaker 1: ticket item right now. And also fresh logging cuts, so
- 35:48Speaker 1: where they're just the fresh timber cuts um isn't even
- 35:52Speaker 1: if the loggers are in there during the week the weekend,
- 35:54Speaker 1: it can be great because they cut down the tops
- 35:57Speaker 1: and creates a ton of brows and seems the filter
- 36:01Speaker 1: the deer in with the hunting pressure. Right now, you're
- 36:04Speaker 1: gonna it's mostly first and last light in those logging cuts.
- 36:08Speaker 1: If you're doing some in season scouting late season, what
- 36:11Speaker 1: sorts of things are you looking for food? Trying to
- 36:14Speaker 1: figure out where they're feeding in relation to that thermal cover,
- 36:19Speaker 1: and typically on on those side hills those points, UM,
- 36:23Speaker 1: So I'm looking for hemlock trees, pine trees, anything like
- 36:28Speaker 1: that in relation to either the oak trees or or
- 36:32Speaker 1: logging cuts. What is your trail came replacement look like
- 36:36Speaker 1: in December in the big Woods, I'm still keeping them
- 36:39Speaker 1: on scrapes and travel routes that seemed to be but
- 36:43Speaker 1: but close to that that cover. If I have a
- 36:45Speaker 1: with my cell cameras, I typically run those almost in
- 36:49Speaker 1: the bedding areas pretty close because I don't need to
- 36:51Speaker 1: go in there and check them. UM. But otherwise, as
- 36:55Speaker 1: I'm still running them on scrapes, they still seem to
- 36:57Speaker 1: be checking those licking branches as they're heading now towards
- 36:59Speaker 1: those food sources. So for how long do you think
- 37:02Speaker 1: that scrapes and rubs are going to be relevant there? UM?
- 37:06Speaker 1: I will typically run that through even in the January. UM,
- 37:12Speaker 1: they'll they seem that found frushtrates this past weekend m
- 37:16Speaker 1: being worked and but it's not the same as your
- 37:19Speaker 1: rout scrapes. I'm talking about the ones that are super
- 37:22Speaker 1: close to the bedding or the food sources. The ones
- 37:25Speaker 1: that are more relevant for hunting seemed to be closer
- 37:27Speaker 1: to the to the bedding cover UM for for this
- 37:30Speaker 1: time and year, mostly because of pressure and UM, and
- 37:33Speaker 1: they're not going as far for the for the food
- 37:35Speaker 1: there going forward. Then in the sixt week or so,
- 37:38Speaker 1: what do you think that bucket TV is going to
- 37:40Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Pennsylvania.
- 37:43Speaker 1: I think it's gonna drop down to about a four
- 37:46Speaker 1: or five. So one they are hiding um that they're
- 37:51Speaker 1: hiding out. They've been having a week and a half
- 37:53Speaker 1: of gun season pressure as well as we have some
- 37:56Speaker 1: warm temperatures coming in, so I think the daily movement
- 37:59Speaker 1: is going to be definitely significantly lower than it was
- 38:03Speaker 1: even the past week. R Bow, congrats again on that
- 38:06Speaker 1: awesome buck uh. Good luck with the rest of your season,
- 38:09Speaker 1: and tell people where they can go on Instagram to
- 38:11Speaker 1: see that white tail you just killed. Yeah, so they
- 38:13Speaker 1: can head over either my personal page which is at
- 38:17Speaker 1: Bow dot mar Tonic it's apellt the e au dot
- 38:20Speaker 1: m A R T O n I K or at
- 38:23Speaker 1: East meets West hunt A right, Bow congrats again, thanks
- 38:26Speaker 1: for joining me, Thanks Spencer, and that concludes this week's
- 38:30Speaker 1: episode of rut Fresh Radio. Thanks to Alex Hunter, Clay
- 38:34Speaker 1: and Bow for joining me, and thank you guys for listening.
