- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Yukon Football Coaches Show. It's Tuesday. That
- 0:04Speaker 1: means we get together with Jim Moore of the Yukon
- 0:07Speaker 1: Football Coaches. The Huskies are four and three on. Like Crispino,
- 0:10Speaker 1: they get set for rice on the weekend three point
- 0:13Speaker 1: thirty in the afternoon. That's a perfect time to play football.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I think in New England and October, you get the
- 0:19Speaker 1: tailgate going, then you get in the stadium and you
- 0:21Speaker 1: start roaring. As Yukon tries to go on five and three,
- 0:25Speaker 1: three game win streak snap Jim, back to back games
- 0:30Speaker 1: really came down to the final minute. I mean, you
- 0:32Speaker 1: can't ask for more exciting football. Unfortunately, one went your
- 0:37Speaker 1: way and one didn't go your way on the weekend.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I guess the question to start with is overcoming any
- 0:43Speaker 1: emotional letdown by the team when you give everything you
- 0:47Speaker 1: have and then it turns out not falling your direction.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I don't think that's part of our makeup as a
- 0:53Speaker 2: football team. I think that these guys are different. They
- 0:59Speaker 2: they learn from it. They probably are a little bit
- 1:01Speaker 2: motivated by it, but they essentially let it go and
- 1:04Speaker 2: move on to the next one. And there's a real
- 1:06Speaker 2: determination to win every week, regardless of what happened the
- 1:09Speaker 2: week before, or where we're playing or who we're playing,
- 1:11Speaker 2: or what the weather's going to be like or the
- 1:13Speaker 2: surface were on. And I admire that about these players,
- 1:16Speaker 2: is that you know, you and I have talked about
- 1:18Speaker 2: this a lot. I think it's a really mature group.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I think it's a tough, hard nosed group. And from
- 1:24Speaker 2: the indications that I had in practice today, there's no
- 1:29Speaker 2: there's no negative carryover from the loss, the tough loss
- 1:35Speaker 2: on Saturday. We all realize that we got to do
- 1:38Speaker 2: a better job in our roles and make sure that
- 1:40Speaker 2: doesn't come down to you know, somebody else's decision. We
- 1:44Speaker 2: have to make the decisions that win games for us.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought the thing after the game, but from
- 1:50Speaker 1: the players that I heard quite often was I could
- 1:53Speaker 1: have done this. I could have done that, you know,
- 1:56Speaker 1: really taking responsibility. I mean that is impressive to me.
- 1:59Speaker 1: No lamenting, Well, we got screwed, something went wrong. It
- 2:04Speaker 1: should have gone our way, but it didn't. I didn't
- 2:06Speaker 1: hear that. I mean that is pretty impressive. And when
- 2:08Speaker 1: you think about it, you give everything you have and
- 2:11Speaker 1: it ends up going the other way, and you know
- 2:14Speaker 1: it could be a questionable call, whatever it may be.
- 2:17Speaker 1: But your players, to a man, basically said I could
- 2:21Speaker 1: have done something better. I could have been better, we
- 2:23Speaker 1: could have done this. I think that serves this organization
- 2:27Speaker 1: well going forward.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I told him in the locker room after the game,
- 2:32Speaker 2: I said, we all know that that was at best
- 2:38Speaker 2: a questionable call, and I said, let me deal with that.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I'll deal with it. I'll express my displeasure. What I
- 2:45Speaker 2: want the rest of us to focus on immediately, and
- 2:48Speaker 2: I'll focus on it as well, is what can we
- 2:51Speaker 2: do better so that it doesn't come down to a
- 2:54Speaker 2: judgment call by one human being or two human beings.
- 2:57Speaker 2: And our guys embraced that. You know, I asked them
- 3:00Speaker 2: to do that. They did it. I think it was
- 3:03Speaker 2: really important to immediately, you know, get that mindset going,
- 3:08Speaker 2: and like I told them, I'll go be the jerk,
- 3:10Speaker 2: you know, I'll go bring it up. I'll go express
- 3:15Speaker 2: the frustration we all have. But you guys focus on
- 3:18Speaker 2: what we can do better, and I commend them for
- 3:21Speaker 2: doing that.
- 3:23Speaker 1: It really is interesting in sports. I mean, every game
- 3:26Speaker 1: that's played in any sport, somebody wins, somebody loses, occasional
- 3:30Speaker 1: ties and soccer. But you know what I'm saying, it's
- 3:32Speaker 1: like the thrill of victory they used to say on
- 3:34Speaker 1: ABC with the Olympics and the agony of defeat. I mean,
- 3:38Speaker 1: it's agonizing to end up walking off the field having
- 3:42Speaker 1: lost a game like that, but it is all about
- 3:45Speaker 1: what do you do afterwards? What do you do next?
- 3:49Speaker 1: And that's what I admire about athletes that do this
- 3:51Speaker 1: stuff on a regular basis.
- 3:53Speaker 2: It's uh yeah, I mean that was an agonizing defeat.
- 3:56Speaker 2: You know, I said it in my presser on Tuesday.
- 3:58Speaker 2: It was one of the most frustrating defeats I've I
- 4:02Speaker 2: can remember in my career, and you have to find
- 4:08Speaker 2: a way to move past it and learn from it.
- 4:10Speaker 2: And I'm not gonna lie to you. It took me
- 4:12Speaker 2: a little bit longer this time than it has and
- 4:15Speaker 2: I think that, to me is an indication of what
- 4:17Speaker 2: I have in terms of expectations for this team and
- 4:21Speaker 2: this program and where we're headed. We're going to be
- 4:25Speaker 2: in tough games, you know. I mean, listen, football is
- 4:28Speaker 2: a hard sport. It's hard to win. Wake Forest is
- 4:32Speaker 2: a good football team. Rice is a good football team.
- 4:35Speaker 2: You know, there are no gimmes there are no easy
- 4:39Speaker 2: ones at this level, and we have to be able
- 4:43Speaker 2: to learn consistently to win at the end, you know,
- 4:47Speaker 2: or to execute better earlier, or as coaches, make adjustments
- 4:52Speaker 2: earlier so that we don't get ourselves in a situation where,
- 4:57Speaker 2: like I said, just a minute ago, one person's making
- 5:00Speaker 2: a decision that has that much impact on a game.
- 5:03Speaker 2: And so, yeah, it's excruciating, it's awful, but you have
- 5:08Speaker 2: to be able to move forward. You have to be
- 5:10Speaker 2: able to and if you can't, then you don't belong
- 5:12Speaker 2: in this business as a player or as a coach.
- 5:15Speaker 2: You just don't. You got to go find something that's
- 5:17Speaker 2: less stressful for you. And I think that all of
- 5:20Speaker 2: us that are in this building we would rather have won,
- 5:24Speaker 2: but we also embrace the challenge that faces you when
- 5:27Speaker 2: you lose a tough one like that.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I think people really, fans, observers, broadcasters, anybody that
- 5:33Speaker 1: follows sports really looks at away a team bounces back
- 5:38Speaker 1: from adversity. We use that word resilience all the time.
- 5:43Speaker 1: It's overused, but it's meaningful, isn't it. I mean, you
- 5:46Speaker 1: have to be resilient if you're in this business as
- 5:49Speaker 1: a coach, as a player or whatever you're doing.
- 5:52Speaker 2: You have to be resilient play to play, and you
- 5:54Speaker 2: have to be resilient game to gain. You know, somebody
- 5:57Speaker 2: told me that one of our Yukon sites was and
- 6:01Speaker 2: I didn't see it was crushing us during the game,
- 6:04Speaker 2: like yo, we're embarrassing and we're not playing good. And
- 6:06Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, you can have your opinion, and that's fine.
- 6:09Speaker 2: You're a fan or what. Maybe you're not. I don't
- 6:11Speaker 2: know who you are, but this is tough, like you know.
- 6:16Speaker 2: But at the same point, the fact that we do
- 6:20Speaker 2: have some fans or some critics or pundits that now
- 6:23Speaker 2: are have we been able to raise their expectations? You
- 6:27Speaker 2: got to look at it. Oh, okay, they expect more
- 6:29Speaker 2: out of us, so let's give them more. So it's
- 6:32Speaker 2: kind of a double edged sword. But the resilience that
- 6:34Speaker 2: you have to have to compete down in and down out,
- 6:37Speaker 2: because bad things happen in football games. It's it's a
- 6:40Speaker 2: it's a space play, a sport played by humans that
- 6:43Speaker 2: you know, they have scholarships too. That was an acc team.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I mean, they're you know, good football players. And then
- 6:49Speaker 2: the resilience to balance back after a tough loss. And also,
- 6:53Speaker 2: and I don't know if you'd call it resilience, maybe
- 6:55Speaker 2: focus the focus to or the the the ability to
- 6:59Speaker 2: get back to focus when you have a really good win,
- 7:03Speaker 2: you know, and we stress out all the time with
- 7:05Speaker 2: our players. Just live in the moment, play the next play.
- 7:08Speaker 2: It's all about this game right here. It's not about
- 7:10Speaker 2: the past, it's not about the future. Just staying where
- 7:12Speaker 2: we are, and our guys do a really good job
- 7:15Speaker 2: of that.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Yeah, we're gonna take a quick break here. But one
- 7:18Speaker 1: of the things you've done, I think here with this
- 7:21Speaker 1: team in the last three years, your teams don't give up. Okay,
- 7:24Speaker 1: they don't let go of the rope. You get behind
- 7:26Speaker 1: twenty to six, things aren't going well, blah blah blah,
- 7:29Speaker 1: you're at home. All that stuff could make you go, oh,
- 7:33Speaker 1: it's not our day. But no, this team doesn't do that.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And I think that's really significant because that's what you're
- 7:39Speaker 1: trying to do. That's what you're trying to build an
- 7:42Speaker 1: organization that never quits.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Never competitive athletics, Mike, I mean that true competitors never
- 7:48Speaker 2: give in. They never quit, they never give up. There
- 7:50Speaker 2: are going to be tough days in competitive athletics, we
- 7:53Speaker 2: know that you can never give in, you can never
- 7:56Speaker 2: give up, you can never blink, you can never relent.
- 7:58Speaker 2: And that's what we're trying to build here and I
- 8:00Speaker 2: think that you're seeing it happen now. We just got
- 8:02Speaker 2: to get better results.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Yeah, no question, all right back in a moment with
- 8:06Speaker 1: Jim Mora. This is the Yukon Football Coaches Show on
- 8:09Speaker 1: liar Field
