- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, I'm Maples Pet Dinosaur and we're going to be
- 0:02Speaker 1: talking about my new EP coming out next Friday, 30th of.
- 0:06Speaker 2: October, Child's Play.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Fantastic. Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Thank you for having me.
- 0:12Speaker 3: My pleasure.
- 0:13Speaker 4: So as you say, you are releasing your debut EP,
- 0:15Speaker 4: Child's Play, next Friday, October 30th.
- 0:18Speaker 3: So it's not long now. How are you feeling about it?
- 0:21Speaker 2: I'm very excited.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We've got the EP launch show in Newcastle that day
- 0:25Speaker 1: and it's really exciting and I think it's going to
- 0:27Speaker 1: be really fun.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Yeah, cool.
- 0:29Speaker 4: So can you take us a bit deeper into the
- 0:31Speaker 4: EP musically and tell us what you were going for
- 0:33Speaker 4: with it?
- 0:33Speaker 1: Yeah, the whole concept of the EP is basically since
- 0:38Speaker 1: I'm a young female in the music industry, I've found
- 0:41Speaker 1: that a lot of people kind of look down on
- 0:42Speaker 1: me and it's about kind of this character of like
- 0:47Speaker 1: very Chucky inspired of me just breaking out of the
- 0:50Speaker 1: box and like breaking out of what everybody thinks that
- 0:54Speaker 1: I can do and showing them that I can do
- 0:56Speaker 1: more and that.
- 0:57Speaker 2: You know, I'm capable of more things than they think
- 1:00Speaker 2: just because I'm young.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Good on you.
- 1:02Speaker 4: And it's only got five songs on the EP, so
- 1:05Speaker 4: I want to run through them one at a time
- 1:06Speaker 4: and you can tell us a bit more about them
- 1:08Speaker 4: and how they represent Maple's pet dinosaur.
- 1:10Speaker 3: At the moment. So we'll start with the title track,
- 1:12Speaker 3: Child's Play.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Yeah, so that song, yeah, I had a weird encounter
- 1:18Speaker 1: at a festival with this older guy and he was like,
- 1:21Speaker 1: I didn't know they let teenage bands play on this
- 1:23Speaker 1: festival and was just being very rude towards me and
- 1:26Speaker 1: he hadn't even heard us play yet. And it just
- 1:28Speaker 1: really inspired me to be like, well, you know, I
- 1:31Speaker 1: can show you that I can do more. And the songs, like, yeah,
- 1:34Speaker 1: just showing that I am capable of more things than
- 1:37Speaker 1: people may think.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Yeah, nice.
- 1:40Speaker 3: And then we've got Big Mouth. I love the title.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yeah, this song is one of my favourites on the EP.
- 1:49Speaker 1: It's very important to me because I think that right
- 1:52Speaker 1: now at the moment young women are having, you know,
- 1:55Speaker 1: are getting– look down on if they want to have
- 1:57Speaker 1: a voice and talk about things that are important to them.
- 2:00Speaker 1: So this song's really about, like, as a young girl,
- 2:02Speaker 1: being able to have a big mouth and talk about
- 2:04Speaker 1: things that people maybe don't want to talk about. And,
- 2:07Speaker 1: you know, people might not want to hear from me
- 2:09Speaker 1: because I'm young, but I don't think that that should
- 2:11Speaker 1: define me and my opinion.
- 2:13Speaker 4: I think being young, you've got a hell of a
- 2:16Speaker 4: lot more to say and you get to say it
- 2:17Speaker 4: a hell of a lot louder than anyone else said.
- 2:20Speaker 2: I'm upset, thank you, yeah.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Okay, then we've got chorus.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Yeah, this song I wrote about when there's someone in
- 2:30Speaker 1: your life that you know kind of might not be
- 2:32Speaker 1: there for very long and, you know, I shout out
- 2:36Speaker 1: a few dinosaurs in there. Yeah, this song was the
- 2:39Speaker 1: second single I ever released and it was a very
- 2:43Speaker 1: amazing time for me. It was when I got to
- 2:44Speaker 1: play a bunch of huge festivals and it was a
- 2:47Speaker 1: really good time and I think that that song, yeah,
- 2:50Speaker 1: that song's very important to me.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Nice.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Then we've got the first single, Lego.
- 2:56Speaker 1: That one, yeah, that song is about I got bullied
- 3:00Speaker 1: at school, mainly on the school bus. And I kind
- 3:05Speaker 1: of wanted to write a song for a song because
- 3:08Speaker 1: music really helped me through that time. So I wanted
- 3:10Speaker 1: to write a song for people who maybe are going
- 3:12Speaker 1: through the same thing. And I know that if I
- 3:15Speaker 1: had a song like Lego when I was going through
- 3:16Speaker 1: it that showed that you don't have to listen to
- 3:19Speaker 1: it and that you can stand up for yourself, that
- 3:21Speaker 1: would have meant a lot to me.
- 3:22Speaker 2: So yeah. I wanted to write a song.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And I know that like there would have been like
- 3:26Speaker 1: maybe backlash coming up and stuff because, you know, the
- 3:30Speaker 1: bullies would have been like, oh, you wrote this about me.
- 3:31Speaker 1: But it's also like I knew that, but also I
- 3:34Speaker 1: wanted to be able to release something that could make
- 3:37Speaker 1: a difference in somebody else's life. And obviously it did
- 3:40Speaker 1: really well and I'm very grateful for that.
- 3:43Speaker 4: If they got a guilty conscience and they think it's
- 3:45Speaker 4: written about them, then it probably bloody well is, isn't it?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Exactly, yeah, that's their problem, not mine.
- 3:50Speaker 4: The last song we've got is Ice Cream Truck.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that song is the last song in the EP.
- 4:00Speaker 1: I wrote it about a lot of, I think, teenage
- 4:03Speaker 1: girls and some of my friends even are very orientated
- 4:09Speaker 1: on boys and that's always their priority and I think
- 4:13Speaker 1: that when you're so young and you're still learning about life,
- 4:16Speaker 1: your priority should be finding yourself and putting your energy
- 4:20Speaker 1: into things that are going to benefit you and things
- 4:22Speaker 1: that you're good at and I think that yeah and
- 4:25Speaker 1: I also have dealt with a lot of fuckboys so
- 4:27Speaker 1: the song kind of about like you can take over
- 4:29Speaker 1: and you can be in control of yourself and you.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Don't need to kind of worry about a boy all
- 4:35Speaker 2: the time.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Hell yeah Lego was a song that started awfully last
- 4:41Speaker 4: August when the music video filmed on a Ring doorbell
- 4:44Speaker 4: camera exploded on social media. So firstly, where the hell
- 4:48Speaker 4: did you get the idea to record it using a
- 4:50Speaker 4: doorbell camera?
- 4:52Speaker 1: Me and my family had always joked whenever we would
- 4:56Speaker 1: get Uber Eats on our Ring camera that it looked
- 5:00Speaker 1: like a 90s fisheye camera. And then we got this
- 5:05Speaker 1: professional video done, but it was taking forever to edit.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And the song was coming out and I was like,
- 5:10Speaker 1: oh my God, we're not going to have a video.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And this song is coming out like in a few days.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And I just called the band and I was like,
- 5:15Speaker 1: you guys need to come over. We're going to film
- 5:17Speaker 1: a music video on a ring camera and it's just
- 5:19Speaker 1: going to come out. And I was like, it's probably
- 5:21Speaker 1: going to get a couple hundred views, you know, like
- 5:23Speaker 1: it's just going to be something that we can have
- 5:26Speaker 1: out while the song's playing, like while the song's out.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I didn't think anything of it really. I thought it
- 5:32Speaker 2: was kind of stupid, but it ended up doing really well.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Very cool.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Was there like a massive promotional plan behind the release
- 5:40Speaker 4: that worked or was it more just luck and right place,
- 5:43Speaker 4: right time?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Lego was very much– I wrote that song when I
- 5:47Speaker 1: was 13– And I recorded it on GarageBand on my
- 5:52Speaker 1: computer with a $ 200.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Microphone and GarageBand.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it was just me in my room on GarageBand
- 5:59Speaker 1: and I wrote it when I was getting bullied and
- 6:02Speaker 1: the song was very like just low quality and I
- 6:06Speaker 1: took a while to decide that I wanted to release it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But once I decided that I wanted to release it,
- 6:11Speaker 1: I couldn't really redo the vocals because I was so
- 6:14Speaker 1: like angry at the time.
- 6:15Speaker 2: I don't think I could have recreated that rawness.
- 6:19Speaker 1: To it so I obviously got better drums on it
- 6:22Speaker 1: and stuff and it got the production a little bit
- 6:24Speaker 1: better but when I released it I wasn't really expecting
- 6:27Speaker 1: it to do well I just you know I was
- 6:30Speaker 1: proud of it and I think that it was a
- 6:32Speaker 1: song that I wrote really from the heart and it
- 6:35Speaker 1: was honestly I've always loved songwriting but it was the
- 6:38Speaker 1: first song that I really wrote just straight from what
- 6:41Speaker 1: I was thinking and I just thought that that was
- 6:44Speaker 1: something I was proud of and that I should release it.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Yeah, like you say, I don't think anybody could have
- 6:49Speaker 4: predicted the success that that song got. So how did
- 6:52Speaker 4: that force you to re-evaluate things? Did it make you
- 6:56Speaker 4: take things a lot more serious or grow up quicker?
- 6:58Speaker 4: What sort of effect did that have?
- 7:00Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I always knew that I wanted to
- 7:02Speaker 1: do music seriously. That's been my dream for my whole life.
- 7:05Speaker 1: But when I saw the success of Lego, it really
- 7:09Speaker 1: just motivated me because I was like, wow, I can
- 7:13Speaker 1: do this because I think You know, you always kind
- 7:15Speaker 1: of have self-doubt when you're listening to your songs and
- 7:17Speaker 1: you're like, well, I like them, but I don't know
- 7:19Speaker 1: if other people will. So, yeah, it very much motivated
- 7:22Speaker 1: me to know that I can do this. And, yeah,
- 7:27Speaker 1: when I saw how many young girls were DMing me
- 7:29Speaker 1: and commenting just saying that my song had helped them
- 7:31Speaker 1: a lot, I even ran into a girl at a
- 7:35Speaker 1: festival we played at and she said that my song
- 7:37Speaker 1: had really saved her life. And it made me really
- 7:40Speaker 1: inspired to be able to keep doing that not only
- 7:43Speaker 1: for myself but for other people.
- 7:47Speaker 4: You seem to me like you're a very headstrong and
- 7:49Speaker 4: intelligent young lady, but you are only young in an
- 7:53Speaker 4: industry known for not being user-friendly. Like how are you
- 7:56Speaker 4: coping with the daily grind of the music industry?
- 7:59Speaker 2: It's, I mean, I love it.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I think that what's really helped me is I've gotten
- 8:04Speaker 1: to meet a lot of artists that I look up
- 8:07Speaker 1: to a lot. Like I got to meet Youngblood and
- 8:09Speaker 1: Spencer from Ice Nine Kills and Um, Fred Durst has
- 8:13Speaker 1: been really supportive and it's just really like having people
- 8:16Speaker 1: like that in the industry supporting me, um, from the
- 8:19Speaker 1: beginning just has meant a lot because yeah, when obviously
- 8:23Speaker 1: you're going to get negative things, but I've also just
- 8:26Speaker 1: had so many positive people following me and DMing me
- 8:29Speaker 1: and commenting and as much as the industry can be harsh,
- 8:32Speaker 1: I think when you have, you know, good people around
- 8:35Speaker 1: you and supporting you, it, it's a lot easier.
- 8:39Speaker 4: Now, tell us more about the EP launch show that
- 8:42Speaker 4: you mentioned just before.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm very excited. We're playing the first ever show
- 8:47Speaker 1: at Tower Cinemas, which is a really amazing 90s-inspired cinema.
- 8:52Speaker 1: They just, like, redid it from the 90s. So, yeah,
- 8:56Speaker 1: we're playing, we're taking over the cinema, playing all the
- 9:00Speaker 1: EP shows. We've got a bunch of good newie bands playing,
- 9:03Speaker 1: Filthy and the Clean Teens, Bardvark and Trophy Wife. And, yeah,
- 9:07Speaker 1: it's going to be such a fun night, all ages. And, yeah,
- 9:10Speaker 1: it's really exciting to be able to headline a show
- 9:13Speaker 1: and put on such an amazing thing that I've always
- 9:16Speaker 1: dreamed of doing.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Cool bananas.
- 9:20Speaker 4: And then you hit the open seas as part of
- 9:22Speaker 4: Hellbound 2 in January next year, alongside Parkway Drive, Dammity Affliction,
- 9:26Speaker 4: Alpha Wolf, Liard is more than heaps more. Sounds like
- 9:29Speaker 4: heaps of fun. Are you ready to be stuck at
- 9:31Speaker 4: sea that long with a heap of middlemen's?
- 9:33Speaker 2: I'm a little nervous. I'm not going to lie. I've
- 9:35Speaker 2: never been on a cruise before, so kind of nerve-wracking.
- 9:39Speaker 2: But I'm very excited.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a bunch of awesome bands on the lineup,
- 9:44Speaker 1: and it's going to be a very interesting experience playing
- 9:47Speaker 1: in the middle of the ocean, but it'll be fun.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Is there any other shows you've got coming up between
- 9:52Speaker 4: now and then?
- 9:53Speaker 1: We just got announced on the whole Waterparks tour in Australia.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Which is really exciting, next year.
- 9:59Speaker 1: We've got Hellbound coming up and we're hoping to go
- 10:03Speaker 1: do some overseas travelling next year.
- 10:05Speaker 2: So, yeah, we've definitely got a lot coming up.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Very nice.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Now, I've got a brand-new segment that you're the first
- 10:12Speaker 4: person I'm going to be asking this, so hopefully by
- 10:15Speaker 4: your reaction it'll decide whether I continue with it or not.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Okay, I'm excited.
- 10:18Speaker 4: What was the very first song you ever sung in
- 10:21Speaker 4: the shower? Do you remember the very first song you
- 10:24Speaker 4: sung in the shower? What was it, and do you
- 10:27Speaker 4: still like that song?
- 10:30Speaker 2: First song? I'd have to say probably something from the
- 10:33Speaker 2: Bubble Guppy soundtrack.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I'm going to throw you a brother who
- 10:38Speaker 1: watches it, so I reckon that. But I still approve
- 10:42Speaker 1: of that.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Very nice.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Well, it's been an absolute pleasure speaking with you.
- 10:47Speaker 4: The album Child's Play is out October 30, and I
- 10:50Speaker 4: had a listen before this, and it's a shit-hot slab
- 10:52Speaker 4: of music.
- 10:53Speaker 3: So congratulations and best of luck with it.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Thank you so much for having me.
- 10:58Speaker 3: No worries. Enjoy the rest of your day.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Thank you. You too.
