- 0:01One of the prevalent ideas about managing the vital nature has
- 0:05been the idea that punishment in some form or other is
- 0:10beneficial. Spanking of children, for
- 0:13example, has been a common method of educating them.
- 0:17It is a form of conditioning that administers a negative
- 0:20consequence to a specific behavior that the parent or
- 0:24other authorized authority figure wants to eliminate.
- 0:29Modern psychological research indicates that in fact this
- 0:33method is not the best approach to what is actually vital
- 0:37education. Children subjected to spanking
- 0:41may either lose their independent initiative or may
- 0:44react with rebellion, withdrawal, or undertake
- 0:49bullying in what is known as the pecking order.
- 0:52Response conditioning is a frequently utilized methodology
- 0:57which relies on what is known in Western psychology as either
- 1:02classical, Pavlovian or operant conditioning.
- 1:07In these methods, the concept is to either deliver a reward or a
- 1:11shock when the individual being conditioned either does what the
- 1:15operator wishes or not. Variations of these methods
- 1:20include development of optimal cycles of reward versus non
- 1:25reward to gain the highest compliance.
- 1:29While these methods may seem to work in the short term, they
- 1:33have less value over the longer term as they rely on a fixed
- 1:37response to a fixed stimulus and thus minimize the flexibility
- 1:43and independence of the vital nature and thereby limit the
- 1:47potential to respond to new circumstances or situations.
- 1:54The key to vital education and motivation is to inform,
- 1:58educate, inspire and uplift the vital nature, not try to shape
- 2:04it through either suppression techniques or short term reward
- 2:08motivations. If the vital accepts the ideal,
- 2:13the rationale, the progress and the motive, it will
- 2:17wholeheartedly engage all its powers and energies to see them
- 2:21accomplished. Of course, this process must
- 2:26take into account the nature of the individual and the stage in
- 2:30the life cycle of that individual so that the education
- 2:34being provided is appropriate for that individual situation.
- 2:40This happens somewhat naturally as the being develops and
- 2:43matures and the higher chakras begin to open and exert their
- 2:48influence. The lower chakras are very much
- 2:51focused on individual, physical and vital existence and they
- 2:55tend to emphasize short term needs rather than larger
- 2:59motives. As one moves into the heart
- 3:03chakra, the throat chakra and the higher chakras centered in
- 3:07the region of the brain and above, new motivations begin to
- 3:11replace those that are more self-centered by nature.
- 3:16This leads many to believe that they should actively work to
- 3:19open the chakras from below through activation of what is
- 3:23known as the Kundalini energy. This approach, however, as has
- 3:28been pointed out by Shrioro Bindo, has its drawbacks as it
- 3:33can lead to the expression of powers that are not fully
- 3:36understood nor guided. The Integral Yoga of Sri
- 3:40Aurogindo focuses instead on opening from above, having a
- 3:45higher consciousness than exert its influence and open the lower
- 3:50chakras successively, while at the same time guiding, directing
- 3:56and managing their energies. This developed a process of
- 4:00leadership rather than domination, which encourages the
- 4:04vital to grow and express itself, but guides it to ever
- 4:09higher forms of expression and understanding.
- 4:14Focusing the vital on uplifting energies and activities can
- 4:17shift its fulfillment away from the expressions found in the
- 4:21lower chakras and help to understand and mitigate moods,
- 4:26short term impulsions or imbalances.
- 4:30Encouraging sentiments like compassion, goodwill, gratitude,
- 4:36forgiveness, non injury to others, et cetera, helps to
- 4:41refine and uplift the action of the vital nature.
- 4:45As it experiences the positive energetic flow that results from
- 4:50this type of development, the vital will naturally begin to
- 4:54seek its fulfilment in these areas.
- 4:58Supportive activities such as devotional practices, chanting
- 5:02or singing, as well as frequenting of locales that
- 5:06encourage the higher movements of the vital nature are also
- 5:10frequently found to be beneficial.
- 5:14The different energy, for instance, between a nightclub or
- 5:17bar and a spiritual center can certainly be experienced.
- 5:23Guiding the vital nature toward positive development and
- 5:26relationships thus aids in the long term growth and maturation
- 5:33of the vital. Force feeding, however, is
- 5:36generally not helpful and leads the vital to turn away or reject
- 5:41the environment in which it is being placed, so it must be
- 5:45something natural and appropriate for the individual
- 5:49involved. The vital responds best to
- 5:53leadership and example. The guidance therefore should
- 5:57conform to what is being expected and follow this
- 6:01approach in the way the guidance is provided.
- 6:05It is not about what is said to the vital but how the
- 6:09communication takes place and how it fits with the concept.
- 6:15There are stories both in the West and the East, which
- 6:18illustrate how example can bring about radical change to the
- 6:22vital being of an individual. In his novel Les Miserables,
- 6:28Victor Hugo describes a man who stole a loaf of bread to feed
- 6:32his sister's family. He was caught and sent to the
- 6:36galleys where he was brutalized over a number of years.
- 6:41Eventually he was freed from the galleys and one night he stayed
- 6:45at the abode of a Bishop in a village church who took him in,
- 6:50fed him, and gave him a place to stay for the night.
- 6:54However, when he left in the morning, he stole some silver
- 6:58plate that the pastor had used to feed him.
- 7:02He was caught and returned by the local Constabulary, and when
- 7:07asked, the Bishop indicated that he had gifted those items to the
- 7:11man as well as some silver candlesticks.
- 7:14He was then let go. The compassion and humanity of
- 7:19the Bishop struck this individual to the core and he
- 7:23became a changed man, went to another town, became a
- 7:28businessman who helped provide real gainful employment to the
- 7:32townspeople, and generally worked for the betterment of his
- 7:36community. Eventually another man was
- 7:40caught and accused of being him, the former galley slave who had
- 7:45committed a petty theft. After his release, although he
- 7:48repented of his action, but rather than let the innocent man
- 7:53suffer, he gave witness at the risk of his own liberty.
- 7:58Thereafter, he was hounded incessantly until eventually he
- 8:03had the police inspector under his control and took compassion
- 8:07on him, let him go at the risk that he would be arrested again.
- 8:14In India, there are several tales about individuals who may
- 8:18have been thieves who either went to an ashram to hide from
- 8:21the authorities or who went there to steal.
- 8:25But in either case, by pretending to be disciples and
- 8:29students, they actually began to experience the deeper truth of
- 8:34existence and gave up the life of thievery and became sages in
- 8:40their own right. Thus, the action of the psychic
- 8:44being and the developed mind can take a longer view, can
- 8:49appreciate the struggles of the vital nature and exercise
- 8:53patient, consistent, supportive goodwill towards the development
- 8:59process. It is particularly helpful if a
- 9:02living example can provide positive influence to the
- 9:06individual along the way. If one practices this approach
- 9:11over time, 1 can look back and see how much progress has been
- 9:16made in making the vital nature the essential, respected partner
- 9:21in the spiritual development and transformation process that it
- 9:26should be and is the mother writes quote.
- 9:32So then take great care of it, treat it with great
- 9:37consideration, but never submit to it, for it will drag you into
- 9:42all kinds of troublesome and untoward experiments, and if you
- 9:47succeed in convincing it in some way or other, then you will
- 9:51advance with giant strides on the path.
