- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Welcome everyone to another edition of the Time Bob Pod,
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: your weekly two-hour dose of NFC North discussion analysis,
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: play-by-play, player-by-player, position-by-position, dissection by one Bob McGinn.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: He's a He's a seventh grade biology student with the scalpel just picking away at that frog.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Do you remember doing that back in the day?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Did you guys?
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: That was the formaldehyde, the smell, the guts, all that.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Did you enjoy it or were you repulsed by it?
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Well, Tyler, I didn't have that till sophomore year of biology.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: I don't know why I said middle school.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: It might've been later.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I feel like we were poking away at stuff pretty early though.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Of course,
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: growing up in the country,
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: I, you know, with my grandfather, my dad, my brother, they're all hunters.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I saw, I learned how to gut a deer pretty early.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: You know, I was exposed to that early on in my youth.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: So that was kind of like a biology class of sorts.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: I think I'm going to finally get into hunting.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: I've been the black sheep for too long.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: It's time.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: It's time to take out the family tradition here, Bob.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Taking my hunter safety course right now.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Are you?
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Awesome, Tee.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: Did you ever get into hunting yourself out there in Wisconsin?
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Rough grouse, which is also called partridge.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: I hunted them and that's, that's about it.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: No deer hunting.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Deer hunting numbers are way down in the state of Michigan, you know, Wisconsin too.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: People just don't do it.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: So it's great that you're taking it up.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: I can remember the,
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: like the buy a buck program out there in Wisconsin where you could only shoot a buck
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: if, You got so many dough because they were so overpopulated.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I'm sure we've got hunters that listen to the show.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: They'll fill us in on the details.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: But it was cool talking to Travis Glover out there also in Green Bay,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: the right guard for the Packers.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: He's like trying to find stuff to get into,
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: third year in Wisconsin and took up bow fishing up in Suamico with a bow through
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: the water with some teammates.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And he's got a compound bow,
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: does 3D archery over in De Pere, and he's finally ready to get into hunting himself.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: So that was pretty cool.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Thanks to everybody for reading that story.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: a player that I don't think a lot of folks know anything about,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: and I certainly did not.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: And there's a lot more to Travis Glover than what meets CI.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: So how's life, Bob?
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Before we get into all things Packers,
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: like I said to Bob,
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to talk about that game at all with Bob before hitting record.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: I don't know what you think about this 20 to 17 outcome,
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: what you think about the officiating, anything.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Anything at all.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: So I want to be surprised right with our viewers and listeners.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: But first, before we get into all of that, what's new out there in beautiful Saline, Michigan?
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Well, I've been back for a week and a half now on my family trip,
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: investigation trip up out to the West, upper Midwest.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: So you see the shirt I'm wearing now, Tyler?
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: I think they can see that at home.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: There it is.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: For the listeners, St. Thomas Tommies.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: A T and an S. Yep.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: So St. Thomas is in St. Paul.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: And that's where my dad went after he graduated from Thief River Falls High School,
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: way up in the corner of Minnesota.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Now, I don't know why he was sent.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: The family was Irish Catholic, and that's a Catholic school.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: But why he would go, I don't know.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: The only way to get there really was a train.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: So he would have taken the Sioux line 300 miles down to St. Paul.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: So we spent a couple of days on campus there at UST.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: They're now FCS and football.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Five years ago, they made the move from D3 to FCS.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: They jumped right past D2.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: And so they've kind of, you know, taken the program off.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: So I checked all the yearbooks.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: At St. Thomas special collection libraries and the lady brought out a bunch of stuff.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: And so he was a starter in football, basketball, and baseball.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: And he played on the 1922 team, which won their first conference champion.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: These are the Tommies.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: So one thing he told me,
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: I was nine when he passed away and we were looking at one
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: of those very same yearbooks at our house in Escanaba, Michigan.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: And he said he played next to one of the first giants,
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Walt Kiesling,
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: K-I-E-S-L-I-N-G.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: And Kiesling told him, he said, Dennis, they played next to each other on the line.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: My dad was a tight end.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Kiesling was a tackle.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: He said, Denny, he said, anybody pick on you?
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: He says, you just let me know and I'll take care of it.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Now, one thing about Kiesling, Tyler, he is in Canton.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: The Pro Football Hall of Fame from St. Thomas College at the time.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: He was a giant, I saw all the pictures of him, 6'2", babyface, like 250.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean, he was massive at the time.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: He played 13 years in the NFL, a couple with the Packers, won a ring in that 35 or 36 title.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Later became head coach of the Steelers.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: He had a rough go during World War II, but he was head coach.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: NFL assistant, NFL assistant in Green Bay.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: So he had quite a career.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: My dad, when the Steelers would play the Packers in the 50s or 40s,
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: my dad would take my older brother down to Old City Stadium and go into
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: the Steeler locker room after the game.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: My brother remembered the Steelers were all smoking after the game, you know.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: They probably got their butts kicked.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: They were smoking these guys.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: So that's about it.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: That's phenomenal.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: I love those stories.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Gosh,
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: don't you just wish you could slip into a time machine and go back to those 40s
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: and 50s, Bob, when you're learning about
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: all of this?
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Do I ever.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: You know, I want to know.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: I know where the field was,
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: and I see the pictures of the leather helmets and all black and white pictures.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: But I definitely do, Tyler.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: I want to know what the hitting was like.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: All of that.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's kind of bringing me to what I've been doing with our kids here down
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: in Western New York as much as I can.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: I've mentioned it's you, Bob,
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: but my grandfather, Hugh,
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: the patriarch,
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: the man who changed our family in more ways than I could ever detail two hours on
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: a podcast, is ill,
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: not doing well,
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: but it's really given us the opportunity to hear his stories and to go into
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: that time machine back Through his years,
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: his life,
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: taking a train for several days out to Alaska to get into the service
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: and just hearing what life was like,
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: you know, almost a century ago, it's been blowing all of our minds.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I bring the kiddos over and they have all the questions.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Boppy, we call him Boppy, just an unbelievable human being.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: And I just hope to be a fraction of the grandfather, dad, brother, That he's been in his life.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: So it's really important.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And I've talked to you offline a bunch about this.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: But like you said, Ty, bring your phone, hit record.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: And I've been trying to do that as much as possible.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Just to have that archive, to hear his voice for years and years will be great.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: And I'll be hitting play again and again and again.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: In another week or two,
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: my three kids and I, we're going to get together on a four-way phone call.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: And I'm going to tell them everything about this trip.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: So I want them to know, and I don't want to forget it.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: that could happen.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: And we're kind of like that by nature as reporters.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: You know, got to hit record, got to document, got to make sure you have it.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: I trust my memory, but I don't really trust my memory years from now.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: All right, Bob.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: What should we start with here in the NFC North?
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Let's start with the Sunday night game, huh?
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Detroit 20, Green Bay 17.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: So you want to start, Tyler, chatting about the generalities of it?
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, I wrote on it at golongtd.com for those who didn't check it out.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: It I think I even wrote this verbatim.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: By no means do I want this to be a blame the refs column because the Packers did
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: a bang up job losing this game on their own volition between all of
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: the dropped passes and two missed chip shot field goals.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: And gosh, still, I can't get over the first drive.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Just not going for it.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: You're at the three yard line.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Just, just go for a touchdown.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: You know, kind of game this is going to be against Dan Campbell.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Uh, And I hesitate because I don't want to be a prisoner of the moment.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I feel like we do this every week.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And I know Jim Monas, we're going to hit record on our podcast tomorrow.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: And he is going to dismiss officiating as a nothing burger.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: I read it.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's great.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: And I'm with him, though.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: I hate talking about this shit.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: I hate it.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: I don't want to talk about the refs.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: And it's not exclusive to the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: and what we saw 425 Eastern time.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Every game that I turn on, Bob, it's repulsive.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, the NFL is conditioning us to expect a flag every play.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: You know, it started Thursday night with the Bears-Patriots, and we'll get into that.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: There's no flow.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: There's no rhythm.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: There's going to be human error.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Refs are going to screw up.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: It's part of the job.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: It's part of what everybody signs up for.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: But, man, in this Green Bay Detroit game, there were just some truly egregious calls.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: And we'll go through them.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: But, you know, what popped to mind, the Devontae Wyatt.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, if he does just quit on that play,
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: if he goes full Matthias Kiwanuka,
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: Vince Young, 2006,
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: 4th and 10,
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: and let's Amon Ross St. Brown, he wasn't quitting on the play Amon Ross St. Brown.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Score a touchdown.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: That's who you are.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Basically,
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: for the rest of your football life,
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: you're Devontae Wyatt, the guy who gave up on a play.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: And so I love what he said after the game to reporters.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's been 100 out of 100 times.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: He's going to try to make the play, make the tackle.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: And the defiance in which the umpire threw the flag from his back.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: And then the pool report.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: And there's the roughing the passer penalties.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: There's the intentional grounding.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: There's all sorts of.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Horrible calls in this game.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: But I think what probably pisses me off most, Bob, is just the lack of accountability.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: We've got these players and these coaches,
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: and they stand at podiums,
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: and they answer our questions after the games,
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: and they're held accountable in the media,
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: and they're held accountable in their jobs.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: If they screw up, they're cut.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: If they do something really wrong, they're suspended or benched, whatever.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: There's true accountability,
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: and instead with officials – All we get are these just defiant pool reports.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: They always crack me up, the verbiage in these pool reports.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: And for those who don't know,
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: when there's a controversial call,
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: there'll be a reporter who talks to the head official about it.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: And they can never own up to anything in these pool reports ever.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: They double down, triple down, quadruple down.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: And the wording on the Devontae Wyatt play, it just blew my mind.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: Who was the head official?
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Alex Moore, I want to say.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Quote, the play was over.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: The play was over.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: And there was an additional act.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Just, I think that,
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: I think the officials would get a token of grace from the public after all
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: of these roughing the passers and Unnecessary roughnesses and all of it.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: If there was just a little contrition and a little honesty and a hand that goes up
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: and says, that was bad.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Wasn't it great when like Dean Blandino,
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: who was ironically enough,
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: he was the rules analyst on this game with Tom Brady and Kevin Burkhart.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: And even on the Carl Brooks play, Blandino's like, yeah, that's a teaching tape sack.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: He tackles him and rolls to the side.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: And Blandino caught so much shit, right, over the years.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: The Dez Bryant, I think he was always popping up.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: But he owned it.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Every week he put a video out explaining the controversial call.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: And there was some transparency where there's no transparency now.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: That drives me nuts.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: And in general, everybody should just agree that –
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: If you're going five miles over the speed limit, you let it slide.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: You kind of know what something illegal is when you see it.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: There's such a quick trigger.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: It's like the hands at the flag, they've got a quota to meet, and they're going to get you.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: I want less bureaucracy in my life, Bob.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Not more.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Get them out of my life.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: The refs should be about this big.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: They should be a speck in our lives.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Get the hell out of the way.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: And of course, when Brian Branch does hit Tucker Craft head to head, it's not called.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: So it's I'm not saying that Green Bay was hosed.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: They would have won the game.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: And I mean, if any of these go the other way, they probably do win the game.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: My gripe is just you turn on any game.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: This is what you see.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: I'm watching the Ravens, the Bengals and the one o'clock slot.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Did you catch this boy?
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: He gets cut by Derrick Henry.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: He's cut.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: And he's falling down.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: And he falls down in the pulling yard.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: And they call him for the illegal block.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: I thought Zach Taylor was going to have an out-of-body experience or something.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: He's losing his mind on the sideline, as he should.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: And then the ball don't lie.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: The Bengals just blew him out of the water in the second half.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: But it's every game.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: There isn't a game you watch and you say, oh, that was...
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Well, until you get to the playoffs, right?
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: When it's January, magically they swallow their whistles.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: So why not do that now, Bob?
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Why not just swallow your whistles now?
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Let them play.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: I'll shut the hell up.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: So, you know, usually there were a lot of penalties the first two or three weeks,
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: and then it would subside.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: And then you're right, then they don't do any in the playoffs.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: I find myself now,
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: if I'm watching a game live,
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: 20-yard pass or something, you want to look for that yellow flag box, don't you?
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: Is there a flag?
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Is there a penalty?
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Because there's so many now downfield.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: the stuff about roughing the passer,
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: I started on that 20 years ago,
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: writing about it,
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: talking about it,
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: just like, you know, put a dress on the quarterbacks and all that kind of stuff.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: And now I'm just so used to it and defeated by it
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: that I don't even – these were excessive, certainly egregious calls.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: But I don't really think that much about it.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: It's such an easy job playing quarterback nowadays, Tyler.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: It really is.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you've got to pick out a receiver against all these eight-man pressures
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: and all this stuff.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Okay, fine.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: But you know you're not going to get drilled.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: You're not going to get concussed or smashed.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: All these quarterbacks,
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago, Don Mikulski, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers early.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: They were just getting hammered.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: It's a different world.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: You don't get hammered anymore.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean,
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Jordan Love has been hit more than any quarterback in football,
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: and I don't think there's been one roughing the passer penalty called on him,
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: and Green Bay's had eight of their own defensively.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: This So they're very selective with this all.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: And they're not mean-spirited hits anymore.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: Almost never.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: The roughing the passer penalties are chicken shit many times or just gratuitous shots.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Looks good for the owners, looks good for the commissioner, the head of the officials.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: But they're not that vicious body contact that I'd kind of like to see personally, but...
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: I know I'm a little weird.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: No.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: God, you're voiced the football gods' collective ears because I don't know why
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: the NFL continues to think they can find this magical middle ground.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: selling us,
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: oh, it's safe, it's safe, it's safe, it's getting safer, it's getting safer.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: You have to own what you are.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: As long as there's blocking and tackling,
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: which there will be, For the foreseeable future, there will be injuries.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: There will be hits.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: There will be lines crossed.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: You've got 22 moving parts colliding at angles in which humans were never meant to collide.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: And that's okay.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: That's why people tune in.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: They tune in because these are
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: the modern-day gladiators doing something they can't imagine doing themselves.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: I love how they dipped their toe in a flag football with the Pro Bowl and nobody cared at all.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Nobody...
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, if they were watching, it was on in the background.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Nobody actually enjoys that.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: It's not going to replace the NFL.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: At least I hope not in our lifetime.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: I guess they've got it coming to the Olympics.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: But people need to tune in because there is a chance that somebody could get hurt.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: It is unsafe.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: It is octagon-like.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: I think there is, God, what's that old adage about pornography?
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Like, you know what it is when you see it?
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Like, I think we kind of know what a dirty hit is when you see it.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: And there was a point, you know, all the jacked up highlights from ESPN.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, you pull those up and it's like,
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: okay, yeah, it's good that those hits have been cleansed from the game.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: Like, I'd say the early 2000s,
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking of James Harrison on the cover of Sports Illustrated taking
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: on Mohamed Massaquah.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: And that was an inflection point.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: And it's incredible that we're learning more about concussions and CTE and brain trauma.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: My gripe is just put it all out in the open.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: Let players know what they're getting into.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: Let the public know.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Let's stop the farce of this being safe when it's not.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: And live in the inherent violence.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Don't try to run from it because you can't run from it unless you are just going
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: to go full flag football, which you're not going to because nobody would watch.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: I say that now and God, watch and watch.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: 20 years, he'll be flag football and, you know, infinite gambling apps, lives ruined.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: How are the ratings right now?
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Have you seen anything about that this season?
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: The last I checked,
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, it seems like they're through the roof setting this record and that record.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, who knows how they calculate that all when they're putting the numbers out themselves.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: And that's kind of the point, right?
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: Like, they know,
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: everybody that was watching that Packers-Lions game,
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: you've got arguably the greatest player ever,
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: an owner,
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: by the way,
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Tom Brady,
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: part owner of the Las Vegas Raiders,
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: bitching about the calls and say how horrendous this is.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: And I even tweeted, like, man, it's refreshing to hear a broadcaster's Verbalizing this.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: J.J. Watt, he was going after that Boye Mafé call.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: It's ridiculous.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: But it's not going to change anything.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: It's not.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: That's how the life cycle works.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: People lose their minds on Sunday.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: It becomes fodder for Monday.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Tuesday, everybody kind of catches their breath.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Wednesday, you're getting ready for the next game.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Then Thursday, the Packers play the Panthers.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: You're getting ready to gamble, bet.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: You're getting ready to your fantasy team, you know.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Yep, get your promo codes in,
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: get your parlays all lined up,
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: get your fantasy teams ready,
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: take the tranquilizer to the ass and forget about what you just saw on Sunday.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: All right, so we got to discuss what we are left with here, a game, right, Tyler?
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: So you're in agreement with me?
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: I feared that you were going to go the other way and
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Go full bonus on me.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: It's a hard game to watch.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: It's a hard game to watch.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: It's not, it's not really an enjoyable experience.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: So, all right.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: So we got, let's look at the standings in the NFC North 19 and seven, Tyler.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: Two more victories over, I can't remember who they beat, Indianapolis and New England.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: 19-7, that's a 7-3-1 winning percentage.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: In second place, AFC North, 18-9, 6-6-7.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: It's a hell of a league right now.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Green Bay, which I still think might have the best team, is in last place at 4-3.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: So they play the awful Carolina Panthers,
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: their awful defense anyway, on Thursday night in Green Bay, right?
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: Okay, so let's start with the Lions, okay?
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: All right, the receivers really came through.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: St. Brown, 9 for 1, 5, 3.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: Jamo Williams, 5 for 91.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Packers just sit back and zone, you know.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: That's basically all they do.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: And when Goff has time, he picks them apart.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: When he doesn't, incompletes happen.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: When he has time, he's just going to pick that zone apart.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: Of Jonathan Gannon.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: And he did.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: St. Brown can find an opening.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Williams had a good game.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: Laporta, no targets until the last three minutes of the game.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Tesla, he was a non-factor.
- 23:49SPEAKER_01: Boy, that guy's a hell of a blocker.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Man, one time on third and five on a toss,
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: he went in there and Knocked down Bullard, the nickel.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Wow, it was a hell of a block.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: The carry was for seven.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: All right, let's go to the offensive line.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: So it's the,
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: I think,
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: is it the first game Mays has played the, or was he injured in the second game?
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: I can't remember.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: But anyway, we saw Cade Mays play an entire game here against good opponents.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: So how was Mays?
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: Of their five starters, he was clearly the least effective.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: First play of the game, though, I mean, he came out firing.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: He knocked the rookie McClellan way off the ball, gained a six.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: I wrote down he owned McClellan early, but that didn't stand the 60 minutes.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: He had a false start when he didn't snap the ball.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: He gave up a bull rush sack to that Riley guy who was off IR, Jordan Riley.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: That was in 3.0.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: He fumbled the exchange with Goff.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: You got to figure it was on Mays, but we don't know that for sure.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: He had a bad run against McClellan.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: He had half a bad run against Riley and another bad run against Wyatt.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, almost all the bad runs were really on him.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: They're staying with him.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, Juice...
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Drew Scruggs played darn well, but Mays is a bigger body.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: Let's look at the size difference on those two players.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: Mays came from Tennessee, I believe.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: Mays, who entered the league.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Oh, I didn't put him down because he just got activated.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: He's not on my yellow list.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: I dropped the ball, Tyler.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: Give me 10 pushups.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's go to the left tackle.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Boy, I thought Sewell just kind of owned Van Ness in this game.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: Van Ness almost had nothing going.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Sewell was really good.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: What a player, man.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: The left guard was Mahogany.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: He was real physical in this thing.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: I got him for one bad run, no hurries, and one false start.
- 26:22SPEAKER_01: Ratledge, the right guard.
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: You know, he's improving, Tyler.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: You did the thing on him last year.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: He's not playing as high as he did last year.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: He had half a bad run when he missed McDuffie, the backer.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: I hurt his right shoulder.
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: It looked like he was really hurt and stayed in the game.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: And then the right tackle, Miller.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: He was good.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: Two bad runs.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: I didn't have any real bad pressures over there.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Green base pass rush, their four-man rush is pretty minimal, and I think he played well, too.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: All right, let's go to the running backs.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: Gibbs played 61 out of 68 snaps.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: Is that going to catch up to him?
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: I think it is.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: He had a good block on a blitz pickup against Bullard.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: 12-yard surge through the A-gap.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Man, the guy, he's a hell of a, he's got a hell of a explosiveness for a kid his size.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: He ran a delay against Hopper, gain of 15.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: He fumbled
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: the ball on a punch out.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: I can't remember who had the punch out, but it was a hell of a play.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: That was going in.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: That was at the Green Bay 7.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: He broke a tackle by Evan Williams, gained an extra 13 out of 15.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: You don't break Evan too many times.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: And he's smart.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: He could have scored twice, but he knew the situation, and he fell down.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: Goff.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: I will say this, though.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: There was a point in our game day chat where we discussed the merits of the slide.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: The first one, I wondered –
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: With all the kicker uncertainty,
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: maybe this is the Trey smack-itis at the forefront of our brains.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Nothing's guaranteed on a kick.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking maybe a score here, Jameer.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: What would you prefer your running back to?
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: But then Jordan Loves throws the bomb and you get a 70-yard T.I.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: and they're in the end zone.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: I think it was more of a debate than it was conveyed.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: I forget how it was discussed with Brady and Burkhart.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: Because, I mean,
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: we always praise those players for taking a knee and melting the clock
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: and working it.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: And usually that's what you should do.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: But I don't know, man.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's just a Trey smack thing.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: But these kicks, you never know.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, it is a Trey smack thing.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: You saw that graphic at the end when he missed.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: He missed at 35 and 26 in this game.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: The graphic said from 35 and under.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: One other NFL kicker had missed all season.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: One in the first six weeks.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: Well, then you just took my take and put it in a body bag.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Well done, Bob.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: It's pretty rare.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: Just being a contrarian.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: Gotcha.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: Goff.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: He leads the league in passer rating, I don't know, 117 or some crazy thing.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: He's got receivers.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: His line now is intact.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: He's accurate.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: He's decisive.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: He's really smart.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: He's competitive as hell.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: He's durable.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: He never gets hurt.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: Now the fumble exchange occurred, okay.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: There were two near interceptions in the fourth quarter by Evan Williams.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: One was a flat drop, terrible throw.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: He was feeling the pressure there because the whole game was moving towards Greenback.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Um, he climbed the pocket once on that 40-yard touchdown to, uh, Jamo.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: No, that was a 10-yard touchdown to Jamo.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 10 yards.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: Um, He threw a bad check down to Laporta.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: You know, he really fakes well on that play action stuff.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Late, he drilled Laporta on that 18-yard ball against Zone.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: He got knocked down on that one also.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: Well, that was the cheap penalty.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: So that's it for the Lion offense.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: Do you believe in the Lion offense, Tyler?
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: They got only 20 points in this game.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: Well, that's true.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: Only 20 points.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: Eyeball tests, though, yeah.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: I love the firepower all over the field.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: There's just so many players that can kill you any given play.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: You know, Amara St. Brown, he went off in this game, but Jamison Williams, his speed is rare.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: Jameer Gibbs, possibly the best running back in football, though you raise a good point.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: These touches do add up.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: He faded down the stretch last year.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: How much of that?
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: But they've kind of said from day one, I remember being out there in OTAs.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, they've made no bones about it.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: We are feeding Jameer Gibbs this year.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: We are putting a ton on his plate.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: He did all the MMA training.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: They jettisoned David Montgomery out to Houston for Juice Scruggs, who you noted played well.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: Juice Scruggs, crazy story.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: We did that a couple years ago.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: If people want to Google it, check it out.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: I talked to him for a feature.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: Do you remember that one, Bob?
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: On the I-79?
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: Driving back when he was in college at Penn State,
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: I think he was in his buddy's car,
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: if I remember right, and hit some black ice and started fishtailing.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: He didn't have a seatbelt on, thank God.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: Somehow,
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: it was this tiny little car,
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: his big old body fit through the window, smashed out, and it saved his life.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: If he would have stayed in the car, he was told he could have been killed.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: Nuts.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so he's playing well, you tell me.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: I still love this Detroit offense.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: It's the defense that concerns me.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: It's weird that it was a 2017 game.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: The turnovers and drives ending on downs and just weird stuff happening with all
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: the weird calls.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I still think Detroit is in pretty good shape here.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's go to the D.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: The D was better with Brian Branch.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: We'll get to him in a second, but that makes a big difference.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: They kind of got some mileage out of the cornerbacks and stopped the long,
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: unerring, accurate balls from Jordan Love.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: And they gave up 17 points and only 324 yards and 17 first downs.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: That's a five for 15 on third down.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they played pretty darn good.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: Now they had the home field, huge noise advantage.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: This game was not in Lambeau.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: So take it with a grain of salt.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: All right, let's start with Hutchinson.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Just OK.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, Morgan's playing really good football right now.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: He has improved so much from last couple of years and then early this season.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: The opener, I think it was in the second game.
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: All right, Hutchinson had run stuff against Morgan early.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: He batted a bubble behind him.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: He's kind of like Van Ginkle in Minnesota.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: They're threats for the picks.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: He had a sack against Morgan in 1.8.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Hell of a play.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: He had a hurry against Belton, and he got a holding penalty on an upward charge against Belton.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: Otherwise, that was it.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: It was a slow day for Hutchinson.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: Over on the other side, You got a couple guys.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: You got Derek Moore, the rookie.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: He's not showing any pass rush, and that's got to come.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: Gil Howard, a three technique, the rookie inside.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: He didn't get anything done, really.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: Tyleek Williams played good as the nose.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: He had a hurry on the goal line.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: He had a hurry against the young center, the third string center.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: We'll get to him.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: He had a hurry against Glover, the right guard that you profiled.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: He had a run stuff against the center Williams.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: He was really good early second half.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: He slowed down.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Another also kind of a quiet day for Aleem McNeil.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: I got him for one run stuff against Glover.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: Not a whole lot in the past.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: That ball was out of there.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it wasn't him getting pressure.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: Lacey, 21 snaps, just kind of a guy.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: On Wazuriki, they kept him around another year, 14 snaps.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, the guy's got all this ability.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: He just hasn't come through in Detroit.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: Nowoski, you know, as a technician, man, he moves beautifully.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: He's perfect on his drops.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: He's in that flat one time.
- 35:30SPEAKER_01: Against Kraft, the ball was incomplete.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: He was in perfect position.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: He had to run stuff against the young center, John Williams.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: Let's go to the linebackers.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: Campbell?
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: I didn't think he did a whole lot in this game.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: He got beat by Kraft, man coverage, 14-yard touchdown.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: He had one run stuff against Morgan.
- 35:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's around...
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: And he gets credit for tackles,
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: but he wasn't really playing across the line and he wasn't making big brawny hits.
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: He had 11 tackles.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: I just hold him to a really high standard.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: Derek Barnes, he was in some man coverage and he had some problems.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: He missed Jacobs on that touchdown.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: Jacobs got an extra 16 when he was late to the sideline.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: He got an unnecessary roughness hit,
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: which was a terrible hit after Lloyd dropped the check down.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: And he covered Redmond, the tight end, deep one time, good coverage.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Played every snap, Derek, 67 out of 67.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: Let's go to the secondary.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: Three, four.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: So they played, okay, branches back.
- 36:46SPEAKER_01: They played seven guys.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: Nobody, and McCrary, He's the only guy who played every snap, 67.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: Usually your corners and safeties will play every snap, barring injury.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: But in this game, they alternated more.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: It's kind of an interesting approach,
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: and it's the best that secondaries look probably in over a month.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: McCrary, he gave up the fade to Golden for 22 early, but then I thought he held up real well.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: Reed, DJ.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: He had a good game.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: Strong run force early, solo tackle, gain a one.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Fourth and four on the right flat, he got golden down.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was a hell of a play.
- 37:30SPEAKER_01: It was man coverage, no gain, Detroit's ball.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: He made a great open field tackle on golden on another situation.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: And he broke up a ball 25 yards deep to Golden.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: Big game for him.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: Rakestraw, what was he, a second round pick in 2024, correct?
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: Fourth and five, they threw an over route to Savion Williams, man coverage gain at 27.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: But other than that, I thought he was all right.
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: He only played 21.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: The former starter, Rakia Sin, came in, played 14.
- 38:10SPEAKER_01: He stopped Savion on a bubble, made a hell of a play.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: He just kind of helped.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: Dorsey, Khalil Dorsey, who's just been a gunner basically his whole career.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: He replaced Rick Straw sometimes.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: He played 14 snaps.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: They kept trying him deep, and the kid held up.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's just a little guy, but he played good game.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: Safety's Branch.
- 38:37SPEAKER_01: You know, he played 45 out of 67, so they broke him in easy coming off the Achilles.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: I mean,
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: just his sense of
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: balance
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: and his sense of integrity to that defense and his brain
- 38:51SPEAKER_00: and his size and his moxie, it
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: lent a real degree of importance to that defense.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: His first big hit was in the middle of the third quarter.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: He had a run fill on, I believe it was,
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: Lloyd gained a two.
- 39:11SPEAKER_01: He high-pointed that bomb to Watson for a pick,
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: and he had another explosive hit on Lloyd on a gain of four.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: So I assume he'll play a few more snaps next week.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: That's a big plus.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: Now, do they get Kirby Joseph down with that degenerative knee?
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: No one knows when or if.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: Clark, the veteran safety, played 55.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: You know, he's really a nice tackler.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: You got to say that for him.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: And he caused an incompletion one time with a really strong low hit on Christian Watson.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Abney, the
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: fifth round pick, yeah, played 34 snaps.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: He missed Kraft on the flat, extra eight.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: He dropped an easy end zone interception at the end line.
- 39:58SPEAKER_01: He missed a tackle on Jacob's touchdown.
- 40:00SPEAKER_01: That was an extra six dancing down that sideline.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: But all in all, it was a pretty good combination.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: Bates had the game winner from 22.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: He also hit from 40, both off the left pass.
- 40:15SPEAKER_01: His kickoffs, not very good directionally, just one of four on the numbers are outside.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: Fox, his first punt, I had it at 5.51 hang time.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: Are you kidding me?
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: So he had 52 gross, 42 net on two punts.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: Their little return guy is DeAndre Carter, who's with the Bears.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: He's been with everybody.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: This is his 12th year.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: He's five, eight and a half, 185, came out running four, four.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: He had that 38 and a half vert at that size.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: I like him.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: He's a tough guy and he's been solid and dependable.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: He had a nice 15 yard punt return.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: He almost broke the second half kickoff.
- 41:00SPEAKER_01: Um, And then DJ Wanham had the block field goal.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: Well, it wasn't a block.
- 41:06SPEAKER_01: It was a graze field goal.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: Did it change the directory of the smack ill-fated kick?
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: That's it on the Lions.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: What do you think, Tyler?
- 41:20SPEAKER_01: What percent did that cause the miss?
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: You see his finger flicker.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: Two of them.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: Two of them.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: Gosh, it had to have had an effect,
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: but I wasn't very good at physics,
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: and I never took physics in high school or college for that matter,
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: so I would just be talking out of my ass.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: That'd
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: be physics,
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: right?
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: I got a C in high school as a junior in physics, and I was glad to have it.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: C's for degrees.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: Physics.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: We had a good,
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: in our group chat from high school,
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: some of my buddies,
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: God, those in New York State can remember, it was, you had Math A and Math B.
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: It kind of replaced the whole, whatever it was, Course 1 and Course 2 before us.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: And Math A lasted a year and a half.
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: Math B lasted a year and a half.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: And good Lord,
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: that Math A class,
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: and I think I took it a year ahead of time,
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: so it would have been like 8th grade and 9th grade,
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: drove me nuts more than anything I took at Syracuse in college.
- 42:24SPEAKER_00: I remember ripping pages out of that textbook out of frustration.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: I was so pissed.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: But we were talking about it because, oh, poor Dan Orlovsky, ESPN.
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: I guess he was on McAfee.
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: You probably didn't see the clip where he admitted he didn't really know what
- 42:39SPEAKER_00: the word percent means and how it means a certain number out of 100.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: And it was all very foreign to him and he was very confused.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: Orlovsky said that?
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: Correct, yes.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: Who was...
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: Just an incredibly nice guy.
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: I've met him.
- 42:57SPEAKER_00: Bumped into him at Starbucks out at the Super Bowl week.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: We chatted for a long time.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: He reads, he listens, does a hell of a job there breaking down film.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: Felt bad for him.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: It was kind of like, let's not, let's get out, Dan.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: No, hit eject.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: Get out of there.
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: Well, the guy kicked it terrible.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: He kicked it low.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: So block or no block, it's on him.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: So let's move on.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 43:23SPEAKER_00: Were you surprised that LaFleur defended him right away?
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: I have no idea what LaFleur said.
- 43:31SPEAKER_01: I didn't see anything.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: He was asked in postgame if Trey Smack is his kicker moving forward.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: And yes, I didn't hesitate.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, Harrison Mevis, he was just cut.
- 43:43SPEAKER_00: And he hit a game winner in the divisional playoff.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: Icy cold the year prior in Chicago.
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: So not out of the realm of possibility that you would challenge yourself to get better there.
- 43:53SPEAKER_01: So he's missed two extra points, I believe.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: And where were his misses?
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Seven.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: He's missed seven kicks in seven games total.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: And against the Bears, he missed a couple.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: Do you know how far those misses were from?
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: He's 11 for 16 on field goals.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: He's missed seven kicks.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I don't have the exact distances,
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: but it does feel like he has problems short to intermediate above all,
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: which is a
- 44:34SPEAKER_01: problem.
- 44:35SPEAKER_01: Tyler, they were under 50 because for the year he's two for two on 50 plus.
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: Somebody said, oh, I think Kevin Burkhardt happened to say when I was watching it live, um,
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: Their kicking game's been a problem for years.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: He kind of indicated that.
- 44:56SPEAKER_01: A problem for years?
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: It's been an absolute strength with Chris Jackie, Ryan Longwell, and Mason Crosby.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: Are you kidding me?
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's 30 years of excellence.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: Jan Stennerud before that.
- 45:13SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: So let's go to the pack on offense.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: A disappointing day.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, those guys couldn't make plays deep.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: The longest completion out of 45 balls was 28 yards to Watson when he was wide open
- 45:41SPEAKER_01: on fourth and two against zone coverage.
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: So they did not get it done despite
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: Those balls are deadly, aren't they, Tyler, that this guy throws?
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: He's the master of the lob.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: And they just come down there and they nestle in their arms.
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: And there's Golden dropping that ball against Reed.
- 46:00SPEAKER_01: He has very shaky hands.
- 46:05SPEAKER_01: He ran a fade slot against McCrary for 22.
- 46:08SPEAKER_01: That was his highlight.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: He goes and misses Rakia Sin on that bubble screen over there.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: Blows the block.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: Somebody gets blown up behind him with the ball.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: Then you look at his body and it's just kind of like, oh, woe is me.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know where that guy's coming from, but okay, Watson.
- 46:30SPEAKER_00: Red flag of sorts to you, Bob?
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: A little bit, yeah.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: The hands and
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: lack of, for lack of a better word, toughness.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 46:48SPEAKER_01: Never talked to him.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: I have no idea what kind of guy he is.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: All right, Watson, Savion Williams, 40 snaps for the third-year guy, is he now?
- 46:58SPEAKER_01: Second-year guy.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, they featured him early, fourth and five.
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: He ran the over route against Rakestraw for 27.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: He was the inside guy on a trip to the left.
- 47:11SPEAKER_01: They come under the formation in motion.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: They're going to try to hand it to him on counters like Detroit does with St.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: Brown or throw the ball in the flat.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: One time on a reverse, he was really impatient, didn't wait for his blocking.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: The gain was one.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: Tight end Kraft.
- 47:30SPEAKER_01: He beat Campbell bad on that man coverage.
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's not Campbell's strength.
- 47:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's not a Fred Warner or
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: The great backers with speed, you know.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: But he is a really good player.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: Anyway, got Kraft blocked while in this game, I thought.
- 47:51SPEAKER_01: John O'Smith, 17 snaps.
- 47:53SPEAKER_01: Wiley, 7.
- 47:55SPEAKER_01: Redmond, 17.
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: LaFleur's playing all these tight ends, all of the Rams last couple years.
- 48:04SPEAKER_01: Redmond had a bad run on the goal line against Derrick Moore.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: That's one thing Derrick can do is stop.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: Stuff the hell out of the tight end.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: All right, let's go to the offensive line.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: So let's start at center.
- 48:17SPEAKER_01: So they lose Ryan with an ankle injury
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: on the fourth play when Jacobs crashed
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: into him from behind.
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: So he goes out and they bring up Monk who's been out with a knee injury for about,
- 48:35SPEAKER_01: I think a knee for about four games.
- 48:39SPEAKER_01: And almost immediately, he plays five snaps.
- 48:42SPEAKER_01: And on that fifth snap, he wrecks his quad and he ends up on IR.
- 48:47SPEAKER_01: So they come with John Williams, who I don't think has ever played.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: He's the seventh round pick.
- 48:54SPEAKER_01: So let's look at this guy because he really did a hell of a job.
- 48:59SPEAKER_01: Williams, seventh round pick and 25.
- 49:01SPEAKER_01: He's barely over 6'4".
- 49:04SPEAKER_01: So he's center size.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: They've listed him as a tackle.
- 49:09SPEAKER_01: 3-22 with a 5-2-3.
- 49:13SPEAKER_01: Didn't take the test.
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: He had 29 on the bench.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: He's got strength.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: Arms fine, 33 and 7-8.
- 49:20SPEAKER_01: Hands, massive, 11-inch hands.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: And you could see some of that.
- 49:25SPEAKER_01: So he goes in there,
- 49:26SPEAKER_01: and I was expecting bad exchanges from under center,
- 49:30SPEAKER_01: shotgun snafu, situation normal, all effed up, right, Tyler?
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: You love those military acronyms, I guess they are.
- 49:38SPEAKER_01: Snap boo, man.
- 49:42SPEAKER_01: And he struggles early.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: He gave up a hurry to Tyleek Williams right away.
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: A bad run to Williams.
- 49:48SPEAKER_01: A bad run.
- 49:49SPEAKER_01: He missed Nowoski one time.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: Second half, the only thing I had was a knockdown on a stunt to Lacey.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: And that was questionable.
- 49:59SPEAKER_01: He had no bad snaps.
- 50:01SPEAKER_01: He played good football.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: And by the second half, he was coming off doubles just like a regular center would.
- 50:07SPEAKER_01: Coming off the lineman, getting to the second level, he played pretty darn good.
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: So anyway, Monk goes on IR and they activated Mekhi Becton.
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: Let's look at Mekhi.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: Mekhi?
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: Mekhi?
- 50:21SPEAKER_00: Mekhi.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: Mekhi.
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: You can call him Mekhi though.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: He's in his seventh year team.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: Man, I just remember like yesterday writing about this battleship.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Super Bowl champ.
- 50:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, six, seven and a half, three, five, seven at the combine.
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: Yet he ran a five, one, one.
- 50:44SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 50:45SPEAKER_01: He had 15 on the Wonderlic.
- 50:47SPEAKER_01: He was a junior coming out, bad on the bench, 23.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: His arms, 35 and five eighths.
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 50:56SPEAKER_01: His hand, 10 and three fourths.
- 50:59SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: So he's a prototype, man, beyond that.
- 51:04SPEAKER_01: And he's been with the Jets, and he was in the Super Bowl with the Eagles.
- 51:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he got a ring.
- 51:09SPEAKER_01: Now his career's falling.
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, they got to have a center.
- 51:14SPEAKER_01: So Ryan, is he on IR, Ryan?
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: No, I don't think so.
- 51:19SPEAKER_00: Out a month was the report right before we hit record.
- 51:23SPEAKER_00: So they're going with Williams?
- 51:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:26SPEAKER_01: Who's the backup center?
- 51:28SPEAKER_00: Burton.
- 51:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Burton was a center at Nebraska.
- 51:33SPEAKER_01: He was inactive in this game.
- 51:34SPEAKER_01: That's why.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: Could Zeitler play center?
- 51:38SPEAKER_01: Did he play center at Wisconsin?
- 51:39SPEAKER_01: No.
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: No.
- 51:43SPEAKER_01: I can't think back.
- 51:45SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 51:46SPEAKER_01: Maybe he can play it.
- 51:47SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's their...
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: But John Williams, man, he did not lose this game.
- 51:53SPEAKER_01: He played terrific.
- 51:54SPEAKER_01: It was a great story.
- 51:55SPEAKER_01: I haven't read or anything what he said, what anybody said.
- 51:58SPEAKER_01: I have no clue, but it was good.
- 52:02SPEAKER_01: We talked about Morgan at left tackle.
- 52:05SPEAKER_01: Gave up the one sack, two bad runs.
- 52:07SPEAKER_01: I don't have any more pressures.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: He had a really good game.
- 52:11SPEAKER_01: Let's go to the other tackle, Belton.
- 52:15SPEAKER_01: One hurry to Hutch.
- 52:17SPEAKER_01: He held Hutchinson, got a penalty.
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: Man, when Jacobs went right in for 10, he pancaked his man at the point of attack.
- 52:26SPEAKER_01: Belton's been good.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: Their tackle play, they couldn't ask for anything more.
- 52:31SPEAKER_01: Glover, Tyler, I got to admit, I want to read your story.
- 52:35SPEAKER_01: I haven't had time yet.
- 52:37SPEAKER_01: I will read it maybe tonight or tomorrow.
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 52:41SPEAKER_01: He gave up a hurry to Williams on the goal line.
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: He gave up a hurry to Williams.
- 52:45SPEAKER_01: And a bad run against McNeil, and that's it.
- 52:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's a solid performance on the road with that cauldron of noise.
- 52:53SPEAKER_01: All right, so that's the old line.
- 52:55SPEAKER_01: Running backs.
- 52:56SPEAKER_01: Real quick, let me jump in on Glover.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: It's good to hear,
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: because sometimes those
- 53:02SPEAKER_00: PFF numbers go viral still,
- 53:06SPEAKER_00: as much as PFF has changed, even for the worse from where it was.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: And you see a pressure number,
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: and
- 53:13SPEAKER_00: And the narrative takes hold that Travis Glover is the reason
- 53:16SPEAKER_00: the line isn't playing well.
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: I'm watching it just like you.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there were some rough moments, but I don't see him as the problem.
- 53:27SPEAKER_00: And I get rolling with him offensively these last few weeks.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: Now, you did pay Zeitler four mil to play.
- 53:34SPEAKER_00: How does he factor into it?
- 53:36SPEAKER_00: I understand that debate, that discussion needs to be had, but...
- 53:42SPEAKER_00: Anybody painting Travis Glover as some sort of,
- 53:44SPEAKER_00: I know I just sat down with him for a 5,000 word feature and there's,
- 53:48SPEAKER_00: I was really captivated by his story,
- 53:50SPEAKER_00: but still on the field,
- 53:51SPEAKER_00: I don't see him as the reason the run games didn't last, anything like that.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: I don't think so.
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, is he as good as Tate Ratledge?
- 54:02SPEAKER_01: No, but they're both huge bodies, tall, big, but maybe not that far behind.
- 54:09SPEAKER_01: I kind of like Glover.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:12SPEAKER_01: Do I like him as much as Belton right now?
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: No, not quite.
- 54:22SPEAKER_01: Close, though.
- 54:23SPEAKER_01: He's been a good pickup.
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: Third year, I mean, they developed a guy.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: You got to give him a lot of credit for that.
- 54:28SPEAKER_01: He's played good.
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: All right, running backs, Jacobs, 35 snaps, Lloyd, 24, and Strong, eight.
- 54:39SPEAKER_01: Jacobs had 16 touches, 91 and a score.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: Eight yards after the catch, right away on a check down, nice.
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: Came out of the backfield, fluid, gain of eight.
- 54:54SPEAKER_01: 25-yard touchdown pass, eluded Barnes and Abney, phenomenal balance.
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: Third and six,
- 55:01SPEAKER_01: option route off to the right against Barnes,
- 55:04SPEAKER_01: gain of eight, great catch, Barnes was all over him.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: That was on the left, excuse me.
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: And then the play of the game really for Green Bay,
- 55:13SPEAKER_01: he dropped that wheel route against Barnes over on the left side, touchdown.
- 55:18SPEAKER_00: Would have been a 30 yard touchdown or 25.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: Brutal.
- 55:22SPEAKER_01: That ball was not tipped.
- 55:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was really good coverage by Barnes.
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: That's a killer.
- 55:29SPEAKER_01: Lloyd, he took a really hard shot from Branch, kept going, made a four yard gain out of it.
- 55:35SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 55:35SPEAKER_01: That's a tough guy to get hit by.
- 55:38SPEAKER_01: He dropped the check down.
- 55:39SPEAKER_01: He was okay.
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: Strong, didn't do anything.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: Now, Love.
- 55:45SPEAKER_01: He came out throwing, man.
- 55:46SPEAKER_01: First three plays, completions, looked great.
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: Went down, what'd they get him?
- 55:51SPEAKER_01: Field goal, I guess.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: No.
- 55:55SPEAKER_00: They got a touchdown
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: right away, I think.
- 55:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:59SPEAKER_01: Lob City, we discussed this.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: The guy's deadly.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: He wasted a timeout at one point.
- 56:07SPEAKER_01: He scrambled through the middle.
- 56:09SPEAKER_01: Found the wide open craft in the corner.
- 56:11SPEAKER_01: It was a great play.
- 56:13SPEAKER_01: He underthrew golden deep.
- 56:15SPEAKER_00: Ball was incomplete.
- 56:16SPEAKER_00: The guy was open deep.
- 56:18SPEAKER_01: The intentional grounding didn't seem like a good call to me, but I don't know.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: Third and six, he made a great throw to Jacobs.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: Tight coverage, gain of eight, and then the drop touchdown, which could have won the game.
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: That's it for the Pac-O.
- 56:39SPEAKER_00: The drops are killers,
- 56:40SPEAKER_00: and it's a weekly occurrence,
- 56:42SPEAKER_00: and it's why you can't just blame the refs for everything in this one.
- 56:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, the Packers had opportunities to win this game and to rise
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: above those horrendous calls, and that Jacobs one was huge.
- 56:55SPEAKER_00: Bo Melton, Golden.
- 56:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know how you fix that.
- 57:00SPEAKER_00: You go to the jugs machine more.
- 57:02SPEAKER_00: It's mental, I would think.
- 57:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:08SPEAKER_00: Jacobs just hasn't played, too.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: All right, let's go to the D line.
- 57:15SPEAKER_01: You know, you look at the numbers, Gibbs, 29 for 116, 4.0.
- 57:22SPEAKER_01: That's a good job, man, on the road.
- 57:28SPEAKER_01: When I look at it, the verbiage is not that good, but, you know, Brooks, 48, McClellan, 38.
- 57:37SPEAKER_01: Riley, 29, Campbell, 28, and Wyatt, 23.
- 57:42SPEAKER_01: I thought they held up pretty damn well.
- 57:45SPEAKER_01: They stay square.
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: Longest gain on the ground out of 33 runs was 15 yards.
- 57:57SPEAKER_01: They hung in there, man.
- 57:57SPEAKER_01: They clogged it up.
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: They mucked it up.
- 58:00SPEAKER_01: A pretty good effort.
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: Let's go, let's start with Riley.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: Now, he's that massive guy who played some, was it last year?
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 58:10SPEAKER_01: All right, so Ford goes on IR.
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: The other, Rob Dignagian knows.
- 58:21SPEAKER_01: Riley was a seventh-round pick in 23, 6'5".
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: 3-3-8.
- 58:27SPEAKER_01: Played with the Giants.
- 58:28SPEAKER_01: He's 5-3-0.
- 58:29SPEAKER_01: He only had 10 on the test.
- 58:32SPEAKER_01: Arms 33 and 3-8.
- 58:33SPEAKER_01: The hand is 10.
- 58:35SPEAKER_01: So he's almost the exact same size as Ford
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: with longer arms.
- 58:43SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 58:43SPEAKER_01: How was he in this game?
- 58:46SPEAKER_01: He had a bull sack against Mays in 3.0.
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: The guy's got pass rush, man.
- 58:51SPEAKER_01: And he had half a run stuff against Mays.
- 58:53SPEAKER_00: I thought he was okay.
- 58:55SPEAKER_01: Brooks.
- 58:57SPEAKER_01: He had to run stuff against Mahogany, minus five.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: He was offsides penalty, run stuff against Miller, the right tackle, Blake.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: He had the roughing the passer penalty, which is pretty ridiculous.
- 59:10SPEAKER_01: And he had a neutral zone penalty,
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: which was ridiculous on his part, third and five at the two minute mark.
- 59:18SPEAKER_01: You know, Penzing, the coordinator, motions three in from a wide.
- 59:22SPEAKER_01: They come in, probably got his attention.
- 59:25SPEAKER_01: Lost his concentration and jumps.
- 59:27SPEAKER_01: Wyatt, Wyatt was not very good.
- 59:31SPEAKER_01: Now, I know he's got an ankle injury and then he came back.
- 59:36SPEAKER_01: He had the unnecessary, well, the call you described with St. Brown led to a touchdown.
- 59:41SPEAKER_01: He missed Gibbs.
- 59:42SPEAKER_01: That was an extra seven and he had to run stuff against Mays.
- 59:46SPEAKER_01: I don't think Wyatt has really done much.
- 59:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, his whole career, they paid him this year.
- 59:55SPEAKER_01: Three years, 57 mil.
- 59:58SPEAKER_01: That was in July.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: I just don't see it.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_01: But all right, Campbell, the rookie, second year free agent, 6'6", 307.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_01: He's got a nice body.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: He's playing pretty good, Tyler.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_01: Just started.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: He had a tackle for loss.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_01: He was unblocked.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_01: He got KO'd at the point of attack one time by mahogany.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_00: That won't look good in the film.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: And he had a batted ball and a ball inside the tent.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_01: He's all right.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_01: And McClellan, I thought he got kind of dominated early, but he fought back.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_01: He had one run stuff.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, no, none of these guys are great players.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_01: But other than Wyatt, I thought the other four really battled pretty hard.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_01: All right, let's go to the edges.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_01: You got Van Ness, 42, Dennis Sutton, 34.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_01: Sorrell, 33, and Cox, 29.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_01: You got four guys.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_01: That's the rotation that's been all year.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_01: They all play pretty much the same with Ben S the most.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_01: Are they any good?
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_01: Not really.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_01: It's just kind of an average group.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_01: They need Parsons.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_01: But, I mean,
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_01: they're not as good as Rashawn Gary was when he was going great in his years 3,
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: 4, 5.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_01: Are they as good as Smith, the tall ex-redskin?
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_01: Probably not.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_01: All right, Van S. I mean, he got dominated by Sewell.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_01: He had nothing going as a pass rusher.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_01: It's going to be a rough tape for him to watch.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_01: He missed Gibbs early.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_01: He keeps flinging his hard hands up, hunting, holding penalties.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_01: He doesn't.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_01: He doesn't have enough pelts on the wall to be acting like that.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_01: He's a guy from Iowa who basically hasn't done much, and he's flinging them up.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_01: You know, Tyler?
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_00: Well, Watson does that a lot at receiver, too, doesn't he?
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he sure does.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_00: It just reminds me of Tim Duncan, maybe the best power forward of all time.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_00: I couldn't stand watching Tim Duncan.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_00: As much as I loved his fundamental style of play,
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_00: you know, you can imagine him just banking those 18-footers from the wing.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_00: Nobody else could – Execute that show.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_00: Constantly complaining.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_00: All game.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_00: Whining.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_00: I just can't do it.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_00: I get there's some gamesmanship here, but...
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_00: In college basketball, that's what Tom
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_01: Izzo does for 40 minutes.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_01: They just know no shame, these guys who are looking for calls.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_00: Oh, I went to Syracuse.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_00: Jim Boeheim.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_00: That's all he did.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_00: That's the everlasting image of Boeheim just complaining.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, I just lose respect for that kind of stuff.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_00: We want a good taunt is what we want.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_00: We want a good, effective, single out your opponent, flex your muscles.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: Did you see the Lions prancing and dancing and doing their little dance
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_00: when they got Green Bay to jump off sides on that huge play late?
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_00: They weren't flagged for taunting.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_00: Just the double standards are immense.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_01: All right, Dennis Sutton, the rookie.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: He had a tackle for loss against Gibbs in the flat.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was a great play on third and one.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_01: It was a fantastic play.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_01: The guy's played pretty good.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_01: He's a rookie.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_01: He's been up and down, but he's pretty good.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_01: All right, Cox, Brenton Cox.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_01: This is like his fourth year, third, fourth year.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_01: He plays hard.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_01: He had a tackle for loss against Miller.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_01: He had a roughing the passer penalty.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_01: It was a bad call, third and ten.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_00: He's trying to stop Jared Goff's fall, by the way.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_00: He's reaching out to help him when he's flagged.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_01: That one.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: And Sorrell was just kind of out there.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_01: All right, now the linebackers.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: So they lose Franklin, you know.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_01: And Hopper plays, has to start, might be his first start.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_01: So McDuffie goes 68.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_01: And Hopper goes 63.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_01: So they're both backups.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_01: They've lost Cooper and Franklin with a shin injury in this game.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_01: So they're playing zone and coverage.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_01: Let's look at McDuffie.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_01: He missed Gibbs.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_01: He missed Goff on a blitz.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_01: He made a nice fumble recovery.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_01: He had to run stuff on a run blitz.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_01: And he had half a run stuff against Rattledge.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_01: Now let's go to Hopper.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_01: First play of the game, man.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_01: Sewell just wants to establish turf on this young guy who's playing.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_01: He gets driven 10 yards back by Sewell.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_01: It was crazy.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_01: He gets beat on a delay by Gibbs for 15.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_01: I thought he, he jumped Sewell.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: Let Williams alone.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, when Sewell was a receiver in that zone coverage,
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_01: he jumped Sewell and Les Jamel alone for an easy 10 yard touchdown.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, you know, that's, that's the thing on Hopper.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_01: You know, he's a great athlete.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_01: He's an 11 test score guy playing a smart position.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_01: So we'll have to see how that goes.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_01: He had a hurry against Gibbs.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_01: Gibbs will pass block though.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_01: He's just small.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_01: And he had a, he sifted in from the backside and made a nice run stop.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_01: All right, secondary.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_01: Let's start with Nixon.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the secondary hasn't been injured.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_01: Those guys, five guys have been intact basically all year.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_01: And it's a pretty good unit.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_01: All right, Nixon had a run stop with that cat blitz.
- 1:05:53SPEAKER_01: Boy, you got a quarterback under center and he doesn't see it wide out to his side.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_01: Man, he's coming in and he's coming in hard.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_01: Successful, minus one.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_01: St. Brown beat him on an out and up for 27.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Nixon will look, he'll peek.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_01: His eyes, doesn't have great eye discipline and he'll get beat.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_01: We know that.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_01: He had a missed tackle on JMO.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_01: He had nice tight coverage on a dig route to JMO, incomplete.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_01: He stopped the 12-yard touchdown pass to Tesla in the end zone.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_01: Great play.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_01: And at the end of the game when Campbell went nuts and went forward on his own 24,
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_01: he came in off that cat for minus one.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_00: We could have led with that call, by the way.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, that could have been our whole podcast.
- 1:06:45Yeah.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_01: Bullard.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_01: Of all the guys in the secondary, well, Bullard's a tough guy.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_01: I like him.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_01: He bid on play action.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_01: It was late to Williams in the flat on that 16-yard touchdown.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_01: I think that's what happened.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_01: He diagnosed a screen.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_01: The ball fell incomplete.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_01: Nice play.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_01: He broke up a curl to St. Brown on third and 17.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_01: And he beat Tesla's block on a counter, made the play for a minus one.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_01: Valentine played five.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_00: CeCe, the rookie,
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_01: tackle for loss, unblocked on a bubble.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_01: He missed Gibbs.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_01: Out to St. Brown, caught it for 11.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_01: Back shoulder to St. Brown, gain of 18 against him.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_01: He had a PI against St. Brown.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_01: It cost him an interception.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_01: He had a great end zone breakup on a ball to Williams.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_01: And he pushed Williams out of bounds, saving a six-yard touchdown on fourth down.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_01: It was another great play.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_01: He had a really good game.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_01: Let's go to the safeties, Evan Williams.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_01: He had a knockback on Gibbs, hell of a tackle.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_01: He whiffed on an unblocked sack.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_01: He dropped the pick when he was sitting in zone, terrible.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_01: He had a bad missed tackle on Gibbs when Gibbs was surging in the fourth quarter of
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_01: the winning drive.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_01: That was an extra 13 yards.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_01: That was a rare miss by him.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_01: McKinney on the Williams touchdown that went, how many yards?
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_01: 40 on that thing, Tyler?
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_01: No, it was on the Williams touchdown.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_01: The Williams touchdown was 16.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_00: I lost my tab here.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_00: Hang on.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_00: Hang on.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_00: The Williams touchdown, 16 and 10.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_01: I said McKinney played patty cake on Williams' touchdown.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_01: There was no strain.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_01: He will not sell out.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_01: He does not want collisions.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_00: I can't picture the play.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_01: Then he lost St. Brown on that 40-yard gain to St. Brown.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_01: Missed the tackle.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_01: That was an extra 13 for St. Brown.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_01: Gibbs ran him over on a gain of nine.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_01: And then on that late toss to Gibbs that was effective,
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_01: he just let himself be blocked by Tesla.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, been through all that.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_01: I won't sum it up.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_01: And the special teams, smack, good kickoffs, three for four in the proper direction.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_01: All right, so they get the delay penalty.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_01: He hits from 21.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_01: But they got a delay penalty.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_01: So now that puts it on the 26.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_01: Now who's responsible for the delay?
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_01: Was it an intentional delay?
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_01: I haven't read anything.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_01: Now on the miss, it's 99.9% his fault.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_01: The snap was good.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_01: The hold was good.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_01: But Waylon, the holder, he was waiting forever to turn back for the ball.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, he kept looking at the kicker.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_01: And then he waited and waited and waited.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_01: And then he turns back, ball snapped.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_01: I thought it was such a long wait.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_01: Evan Williams had a nice tackle on a kickoff return.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_01: I was surprised he was out there.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_01: Neiman, the linebacker, maybe saved a touchdown on the second half kickoff.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_01: So smack.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_01: And then the final one, he hits from 43 to tie it at 17.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_01: And then he misses a possible game winner from 35.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_01: Two fingers grazed the ball.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_01: The ball was kicked low.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_01: It's all on him.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_01: Horrible.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, in the late 80s, there were some awful kickers.
- 1:11:01SPEAKER_01: Four kickers one year.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_01: Max Zendejas, Dawson, Dorsey, and a fourth one.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_01: That was the worst kicking I've ever seen in Green Bay.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_01: Worse than Brett Conway?
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_01: No, that was with Longwell in like 90s.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_01: Two or something.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_01: Four.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_01: That's before that.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_01: That's with Lindy.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_01: Let me get that fourth kicker.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_01: I got the back breast guide here.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm just asking if it's worse than Brett Conaway in 1997
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_00: because I can remember writing into Packer reports saying they should go
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_00: with Ryan Longwell.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_01: Did you?
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_00: One of my best takes as a third grader.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_01: I guess I would have been
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_00: fourth graden.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_01: So in 88, Max was 9 for 16 and missed two pats.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_01: Dawson, 3 for 5.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_01: Forgot his first name.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_01: Dean Dorsey, 1 for 3.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_01: And Curtis Burrow came in on the end.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_01: He went 0 for 1 and missed 2 out of 4 on PATs.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_01: And then they drafted Chris Jackie,
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_01: Tom Brotz did in 89, and away we went with excellence with three great kickers.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_01: Kickers and quarterbacks.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_00: All right, help me out here, though, Bob.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_00: I believe Brett Conway was a draft pick in 1997.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_01: Third round?
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, or I'm not sure where he went, but he was a pick.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_00: Decent capital.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_00: And he was terrible.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_00: And he was terrible.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_00: Right away.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_00: And they went to Ryan Longwell right away.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: So.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_00: I get having confidence in your kicker and Trey Smack obviously has a really strong leg.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_00: But kickers are weird.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_00: If you're not too careful, they can cost you your season.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_00: Green Bay just lived it last year.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_00: Brandon McManus.
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_01: So Tyler, hold on now.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_01: Wolf.
- 1:13:03SPEAKER_01: Conway was drafted, what year?
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_01: In 97 in the third round out of the Nittany Lions, Penn State.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_01: And he was so bad in the exhibition season.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_01: I think he might've got hurt,
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_01: but anyway,
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_01: Wolf pulled the pin on him and he never kicked in a regular season game
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_01: for Green Bay.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_01: He went to Longwell, who was in camp.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_01: He had been signed in early July, I believe.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_00: And he was great in the preseason.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I remember that.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_00: Think about that as a GM.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_00: You draft somebody in the third round, you've got to swallow your pride.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_01: Ron didn't give a shit.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_00: You're not performing?
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_01: It's on me, but why exacerbate it, right?
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_01: Send them home.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, would you just release Trey Smack if you're running the Green Bay Packers?
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_01: What's he, a seventh-round pick or a sixth?
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_01: I don't know what the emergency list is in the league right now.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_00: When I was on the beat, I – Sixth round, 216 overall.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_01: Six, yeah.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_01: Six – I don't know what's out there, Tyler.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_01: Do they got somebody on the practice squad?
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_01: Let's look.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, your personnel department, this is what their lives are.
- 1:14:27SPEAKER_00: They're always looking.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_01: They got Lenny Krieg, K-R-I-E-G.
- 1:14:33SPEAKER_01: Never heard of them.
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_01: So the pack follows the four and three.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_01: And now they play Thursday night against Carolina.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_00: Last question on the Packers.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_00: I was really looking forward to hearing from Matt LaFleur after the game.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_00: What would he say?
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_00: You know, it's tough.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_00: You can go one direction.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_00: You can eat the fine.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, Xavier McKinney, he didn't care.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_00: He called it bullshit and went off on the officials, effing up the game.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_00: And Matt LaFleur sets the tone for the team.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_00: Every head coach does.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_00: He could stand there, tear the refs up, go off, go ballistic.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_00: Denny Green, Jim Mora, Mike Dicka, pick your press conference meltdown.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_00: Just lose his mind and hope that a message is sent.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_00: If nothing else, Jordan Love, and point out your own quarterbacks are getting hit.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_00: You haven't gotten one call.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_00: The more I think of it,
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_00: and I think a lot of fans were hoping he'd go that way and just eat the fine
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_00: and go off,
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_00: and it'd be cathartic for them watching this game for three hours to hear
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_00: the head coach show that kind of emotion.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_00: You could tell he was pissed, but he tempered his emotions.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_00: He went up to the line without crossing it.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_00: And I think that's what he had to do.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_00: They play Thursday night.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_00: You can't let emotions from this game,
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_00: this loss,
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_00: those calls, how it ended, linger in to the game four and a half, five days later.
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_00: Where do you come down on that if you're the head coach?
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_00: Do you think that there is any upside to being pissed off,
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_00: verbalizing that you're pissed off and hoping something changes?
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_00: Or do you just kind of stay even keeled, measured, I
- 1:16:26SPEAKER_01: don't know.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_01: Coach's reactions to stuff like that, Tyler, I don't really get caught up in it, you know?
- 1:16:34SPEAKER_01: I just kind of don't care.
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_01: I just don't.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_01: Now, when I was on the beat, I guess I did, you know, what to write about.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_01: But I don't know.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_01: I don't even watch LaFleur.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_01: I don't know what he's doing and that stuff.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_00: It's on brand.
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_00: It's in line with how his messaging has been throughout the season.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_00: Think about up to that Chicago game.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_00: Ben Johnson in his Bears locker room is always tapping into the rivalry and bringing
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_00: the Packers up and the floor went a different route.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_00: So I tend to think he did the right thing here.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_00: We'll see.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, you would think that they could run the ball on Carolina.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, they were just humiliated by Tampa Bay for whatever it was,
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_00: 258 rushing yards between Bucky Irving and Kenny Gainwell and Sean Tucker,
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_00: the pride of Syracuse.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_00: If there's a game where you can run the ball, you think it would be this one.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_00: So with Josh Jacobs in his second game, we shall see.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_00: How's the Orange doing right now, T?
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_00: I believe they did beat Bill Belichick's Tar Heels.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_00: Did I watch more than 11 seconds of that game?
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_00: I did not, Bob.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_00: Terrible alum.
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_00: Terrible.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_00: It was on, and it was one of those rare nights where, you know, the kids went down.
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, they go down great, but didn't have any work to do.
- 1:18:03SPEAKER_00: My wife loves Halloween, and I said, you know what?
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_00: We're going to watch Hereditary.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_00: We're going to watch a Halloween movie together.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_00: That was the decision made.
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_01: So, Tyler, um,
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_01: We both have undergrad degrees from big schools, Syracuse and Michigan, you know?
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_01: And I mean, that's a long time ago for me.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_01: But so if I was doing something with the kids or Halloween,
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_01: of course, when I was younger, I didn't have time to tape Michigan games.
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess that's it.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_01: Nowadays, I'm semi-retired, you know?
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, I watch every second with the remote on the tape,
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_01: Michigan games, Saturday, Saturday night, you know?
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_01: It's kind of a boring life, but I mean, I know how all their old linemen are playing, you know?
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_00: I know Angeli was their quarterback, and he got hurt and underperformed.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_01: They went through two other quarterbacks, and one of them was from Moorhead State, mobile guy.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_00: They got hurt, and Angeli was in, and they beat the Tar Heels.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_00: And I only know that because I looked at the box score for maybe 14 seconds.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_00: That's the extent of my support of Syracuse.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_01: When you're semi-retired, T, you might go back to the Orange.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_01: You could.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_00: I should.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_01: Buy it in your alma mater.
- 1:19:23SPEAKER_00: Unless there's an interview to transcribe,
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_00: as you know, the amount of time that we piss away transcribing quotes for stories.
- 1:19:31SPEAKER_00: That's where it is.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_01: Hey, we got to mention our friend Michael Cohen.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_01: Now, this coming Thursday, he's launching his new Substack.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_01: That's the word.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_01: You would say ours is a Substack, Tyler, and his is a Substack.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_01: And it's going to cover, he's going to be a one-man band, basically, covering UConn basketball.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_01: Men.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_01: No women right now.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_01: Men.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_01: The name of the website is OnStores.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_01: I believe FromStores.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_01: FromStores.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_01: You got it.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_01: Yep, you got it.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_01: Thank you, T.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_00: A home for independent reporting on UConn basketball.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_00: There it is, our buddy Mike Cohen.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_00: Better yet, he made the move in shaving his head and started to substack.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_00: So that's great to see, Mike.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_00: You did the right thing.
- 1:20:33SPEAKER_00: Love to see.
- 1:20:33SPEAKER_00: I've talked to him a bunch about it.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_00: Everybody out there, please.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_00: I'll share the links as well.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_00: Subscribe, follow, read Michael Cohen.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_00: I don't mean to cut you off, Bob.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_00: He's such a great friend of mine.
- 1:20:47SPEAKER_00: For those who don't know, I was a senior at Syracuse when he was a freshman.
- 1:20:51SPEAKER_00: And so working at the Daily Orange,
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_00: I believe I was a managing editor that first semester in covering football.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_00: Mike walks through the door.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_00: You can see the hunger, the intensity, the drive.
- 1:21:02SPEAKER_00: Wanted to just throw himself into the DO and covering Syracuse sports.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_00: And I just like,
- 1:21:08SPEAKER_00: we have to give this kid all the,
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_00: I can't, I was a kid too, all the opportunities in the world.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_00: And he just couldn't get enough, knocked it out of the park every single beat he was on.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_00: He's so good at the investigative stuff as well.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_00: Listeners and readers probably remember from the Journal Sentinel days going
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_00: through police reports,
- 1:21:26SPEAKER_00: just digging and digging and digging in addition to the gamers and the columns and
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_00: the feature writing and the podcast.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_00: And he kept that going with you after I left.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_00: But yeah,
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_00: but yeah,
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_00: like when I so that would have been the spring of 2015 when I heard
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_00: from Lisa Wilson, the Buffalo News opportunity to go back home and cover the bills.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_00: It was still a tough decision.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'd love to live it out there with you, Bob.
- 1:21:49SPEAKER_00: And Wisconsin, everybody took me in.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_00: But once I decided to take that job and I talked to Mike Davis,
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_00: our sports center at the JS, it might've been the same conversation.
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_00: I don't even know if it was the second conversation.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_00: I said, Mike, my one recommendation would be Michael Cohen.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is who you want to hire next.
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_00: And he was fantastic out there.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_00: I think he was in Green Bay the same amount of time as me, about four and a half years or so.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_01: Not that, well, yeah, he had some, Some with the J.S.
- 1:22:18SPEAKER_01: and then some with the athletic.
- 1:22:20SPEAKER_00: The athletic, right.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was about it.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think he's going to do a great job.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_01: He's a Syracuse grad, obviously, but he's born and raised in Connecticut.
- 1:22:30SPEAKER_01: That's where he's living now.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_01: College basketball is one of his real passions.
- 1:22:34SPEAKER_01: He's going to do fantastic work on that beat.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_01: Fantastic.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_01: And I'm going to see him next week, Tyler, at Boston Gardens.
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_01: I will be at Boston Garden a week from Friday for a rematch of
- 1:22:51SPEAKER_01: a national title game, the Wolverines at the Huskies of UConn at the Garden.
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:22:59SPEAKER_00: Should be good.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_01: I'm not going to miss any podcast time, boss.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_00: You better not.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_00: Vacationing left and right.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_00: Taking your PTO.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_00: Love Mike.
- 1:23:13SPEAKER_00: Hell of a basketball player, too.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_00: We played a lot of pickup back in the day.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_00: We're going back 15, 20 years now.
- 1:23:18SPEAKER_00: Had a little teardrop in the lane.
- 1:23:20SPEAKER_00: Michael did.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_01: So we can launch Thursday.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_01: I'm signing up that day, that afternoon.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_01: After I get done off the golf course.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_01: What game do you want next, Tyler?
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_00: You're still golfing.
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_00: Isn't it going to snow out there?
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_01: Let's get you off that course.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_01: Heaven on earth out there now, T. Fall golf, man.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_01: What game do you want next?
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_01: Well, let's talk
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_00: Bears-Patriots.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_00: Let's go to Mr. Caleb Williams versus Drake May.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 1:24:04SPEAKER_01: One thing, you know what, in that Green Bay game, there were five Williams on that field.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_01: My notes are just Savion to Jameis.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_01: I was just driving me nuts when I was – I'm surprised I didn't screw
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_01: that up more talking about it.
- 1:24:20SPEAKER_01: All right, so the Bears win
- 1:24:25SPEAKER_01: it 30-24 at Soldier Field.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_01: All right, let's just start.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_01: Burden, four catches for 130.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_01: Odunze, four for 69.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_01: Loveland, seven for 69.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_00: Is their firepower as good as Detroit?
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_01: Pretty close, Tyler.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_01: Burden's really come on.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_01: All right, Burden.
- 1:24:49Wow.
- 1:24:50SPEAKER_01: You can't bring the guy down.
- 1:24:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, he is so elusive.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_01: He's got a stiff arm.
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_01: Right away, 26 yards on a shallow cross against Marcus Jones.
- 1:25:00SPEAKER_01: Stiff arm, 17 after the catch.
- 1:25:04SPEAKER_01: 40 yards after the catch on a blown coverage on an over route, total of 58.
- 1:25:09SPEAKER_01: Wingback reverse, made Woods one of those defensive backs.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_01: Charles Woods, make him miss, extra seven.
- 1:25:19SPEAKER_01: 22-yard gain, broke two tackles, extra six.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_01: A bubble screen, 24-yard touchdown on third and 17.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_01: He follows his blockers.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_01: Then he just breaks into daylight towards the sideline.
- 1:25:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, it was one of those instinctive moves,
- 1:25:33SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_01: that really only the great ones,
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_01: the great runners who can run the daylight can make.
- 1:25:41SPEAKER_01: All right, the other one, Odunze played 65.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_01: Burden only played 42, by the way.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_01: Odunze, you know, this is his...
- 1:25:52SPEAKER_01: Third year, Tyler?
- 1:25:55SPEAKER_00: Or second?
- 1:25:57SPEAKER_00: It's Rome's third.
- 1:25:59SPEAKER_00: Third, yeah.
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_01: He's becoming a more quarterback-friendly target.
- 1:26:03SPEAKER_01: He's sitting down better.
- 1:26:04SPEAKER_01: He's finding holes in zones.
- 1:26:07SPEAKER_01: He's got more telepathy with Caleb.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_01: He's doing some good things.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_01: Third and seven, he sits down, gain a six.
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_01: He was short of the stick.
- 1:26:16SPEAKER_01: He dropped a 13-yard touchdown on a fade.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_01: 21-yard curl on third and 11, sat down, presented himself to the QB.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_01: 21-yarder against zone, middle, third and nine, great hands catch.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_01: And then he ran it out for 21-13 after the catch.
- 1:26:36SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 1:26:37SPEAKER_01: he's not anywhere near what Burden is after the catch,
- 1:26:39SPEAKER_01: but he does have some of that in him.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_01: And then Xavier and Thomas,
- 1:26:42SPEAKER_01: the speedster rookie with the 4-2-6, They put him on the field for five plays.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_01: He gets two holding penalties, wiping out two runs that total 20 yards.
- 1:26:53SPEAKER_01: Now he's small, 5'10.5", 192, but that's pretty ridiculous.
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_01: Kalief Raymond plays 48.
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_01: He's just a good player.
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_01: He's a hell of a blocker at his size.
- 1:27:05SPEAKER_01: That shows up every week.
- 1:27:07SPEAKER_01: I mean, the guy's 5'8.5", 173 coming out.
- 1:27:12SPEAKER_01: Tiny arms, hands are okay, but He just gets people blocked.
- 1:27:16SPEAKER_01: I love the guy.
- 1:27:19SPEAKER_01: Tight end, Loveland.
- 1:27:21SPEAKER_01: You know, he had a slow start.
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_01: They weren't going to him.
- 1:27:24SPEAKER_01: Boy, he's really come on.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_01: As a blocker, he has strike in him, but he just doesn't sustain that well.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_01: He's just got to grow into that, but he's not sustaining blocks that well.
- 1:27:37SPEAKER_01: He had a bad run against Jacobs.
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_01: Gabe Jacobs, boy, he's a physical second rookie from the Patriots, Illinois.
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_01: He killed Ponder in the flat and man coverage game, gain of 11.
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_01: He had a bad run against Marcus Jones who beat him.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_01: He had a drop in the middle of the field.
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_01: He runs these quick flats all the time.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_01: He is so quick on those fast diagonal routes.
- 1:28:04SPEAKER_01: Usually picks up eight to 10 all the time and 22 yard dig.
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_01: Against Jalen Reed.
- 1:28:13SPEAKER_01: Comet, that's going to be a major loss.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_01: I think he's on IR.
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_01: I think he's out for the year with a knee injury.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_01: That hurts him.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_01: Hurts him a lot.
- 1:28:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, they use a lot of two tight end sets.
- 1:28:27SPEAKER_01: He's a solid pass blocker, a pretty darn good run blocker, and he can catch the ball.
- 1:28:33SPEAKER_01: Intermediate and short.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_01: He's dependable as hell.
- 1:28:36SPEAKER_01: That's a loss.
- 1:28:38SPEAKER_01: Caught that ball in the flat, got hit on the right knee in the fourth quarter, and that's it.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_01: You never know, man.
- 1:28:45SPEAKER_01: So the second tight end is Roush, the rookie.
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_01: 6'6", so he becomes the number two, a third-round pick.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_01: 6'6", 266, 477.
- 1:28:58SPEAKER_01: Is he from Stanford, Roush?
- 1:29:01SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 1:29:01SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:29:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:29:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:29:05SPEAKER_01: He had 14 snaps.
- 1:29:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's been up and down this season.
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_01: He's got to come through.
- 1:29:09SPEAKER_01: And then their third would be, I don't know who they're going to, I don't know who they got.
- 1:29:19SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:29:19SPEAKER_01: The offensive line left to right.
- 1:29:22SPEAKER_01: So they start Benedict.
- 1:29:23SPEAKER_01: He plays 50 and they come in for the second game in a row with Ozzy Trapilo who plays 19.
- 1:29:29SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:29:30SPEAKER_01: Benedict was better for the second week in a row.
- 1:29:33SPEAKER_01: He played really good.
- 1:29:34SPEAKER_01: I got half a bad play.
- 1:29:36SPEAKER_01: Trapilo, first play, Jakus beats him up the field, sack, 4.1.
- 1:29:43SPEAKER_01: He looked like a waistbender on the thing.
- 1:29:46SPEAKER_01: Then he gives a knockdown to Jakus,
- 1:29:48SPEAKER_01: and then he gets another sack to Jakus on a bull rush in 2.9.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_00: It's a pretty brutal appearance
- 1:29:54SPEAKER_01: for Trapilo.
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, I don't know if they're going to keep using him or just give Bennett the game.
- 1:30:03SPEAKER_01: The guy needs, he needs reps because he was a lot better late last season.
- 1:30:08SPEAKER_01: All right, the left guard is Thune.
- 1:30:15SPEAKER_01: You know, he gets beat, Tyler, in pass pro.
- 1:30:20SPEAKER_01: He recovers so fast.
- 1:30:22SPEAKER_01: He gets right back into the play.
- 1:30:25SPEAKER_01: Even at his age, what is he, like 32?
- 1:30:27SPEAKER_01: He's just an easy mover.
- 1:30:28SPEAKER_01: He's so mobile.
- 1:30:30SPEAKER_01: Now, They'll fan him,
- 1:30:33SPEAKER_01: and they're changing up protection,
- 1:30:35SPEAKER_01: and he fanned probably 10 times from left guard over to block the right edge.
- 1:30:40SPEAKER_01: Could be Jakus or whoever else they had.
- 1:30:43SPEAKER_01: Milton, that would have been Obiozo or Ponder.
- 1:30:49SPEAKER_01: He can do that.
- 1:30:50SPEAKER_01: He's athletic enough to do it.
- 1:30:53SPEAKER_01: He's impressive.
- 1:30:55SPEAKER_01: Milton Williams didn't get a whole lot done.
- 1:30:58SPEAKER_01: These guards played very good against Milton, the ex-Eagle, who's a hell of a player.
- 1:31:04SPEAKER_01: Thune gave up one flush late in the game to Leonard Taylor on one of those fans.
- 1:31:10SPEAKER_01: The center, Bradbury, he's been good.
- 1:31:13SPEAKER_01: There's no indication he's going to relinquish that position to
- 1:31:16SPEAKER_01: the rookie Logan Jones from Iowa.
- 1:31:19SPEAKER_01: He's very quick.
- 1:31:20SPEAKER_01: He gave up a flush to Durden.
- 1:31:22SPEAKER_01: He got a flush to Daquan Jones.
- 1:31:25SPEAKER_01: He had two bad run situations.
- 1:31:28SPEAKER_01: He wasn't great, but he's been all is snapping.
- 1:31:31SPEAKER_01: He's smart as hell.
- 1:31:33SPEAKER_00: He's been a good player for him,
- 1:31:34SPEAKER_01: a good acquisition.
- 1:31:35SPEAKER_01: The right guard is Jackson.
- 1:31:37SPEAKER_01: Back from that, I think it was a hip injury.
- 1:31:40SPEAKER_01: So he had the week before
- 1:31:44SPEAKER_01: We know him.
- 1:31:45SPEAKER_01: He's just a tough guy.
- 1:31:47SPEAKER_01: He had a couple misses in this game.
- 1:31:50SPEAKER_01: And then the right tackle, Darnell Wright, was terrific.
- 1:31:53SPEAKER_01: False start.
- 1:31:53SPEAKER_01: He's just a mauler.
- 1:31:55SPEAKER_01: And, you know, he's really got good feet.
- 1:31:56SPEAKER_01: And when he concentrates, when he's on his game, man, he's hard to beat in pass pro too.
- 1:32:03SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 1:32:03SPEAKER_01: with Sewell moving to the left side,
- 1:32:06SPEAKER_01: he's clearly the best tackle, right tackle in the division.
- 1:32:12SPEAKER_01: All right, the running backs, you got Monungai missing another game.
- 1:32:16SPEAKER_00: Boy, that's been a blow.
- 1:32:17SPEAKER_01: So just like Aaron Jones, Swift is having to play too much.
- 1:32:22SPEAKER_01: 59 snaps out of 67, I believe.
- 1:32:29SPEAKER_01: 59 out of 69, that's too much for him.
- 1:32:33SPEAKER_01: He had 26 touches for 90 yards.
- 1:32:42SPEAKER_01: Made a quick cut, beat Marcus Jones.
- 1:32:46SPEAKER_01: Four-yard touchdown.
- 1:32:48SPEAKER_01: The young small corner dove and missed.
- 1:32:50SPEAKER_01: Hell of a cut.
- 1:32:51SPEAKER_01: He can jump cut.
- 1:32:52SPEAKER_01: Another one fourth and one.
- 1:32:54SPEAKER_01: He jumped cut to the left side.
- 1:32:55SPEAKER_01: Gain of five.
- 1:32:57SPEAKER_01: He gave up a hurry.
- 1:32:58SPEAKER_01: Missed a blitz pickup against the safety Woodson.
- 1:33:02SPEAKER_01: Ten-yard gain.
- 1:33:02SPEAKER_01: He broke three tackles.
- 1:33:04SPEAKER_01: Spillane, Durden, and Marcus Jones.
- 1:33:06SPEAKER_01: And he had a half a knockdown.
- 1:33:10SPEAKER_01: Roshon Jones played ten.
- 1:33:11SPEAKER_01: All right, let's go to Caleb.
- 1:33:13SPEAKER_01: Passer rating 116.7.
- 1:33:17SPEAKER_01: Of his nine misses, four forward throwaways.
- 1:33:22SPEAKER_01: Excuse me, 11 misses.
- 1:33:24SPEAKER_01: His cadence, he got Milton Williams to jump.
- 1:33:28SPEAKER_01: Illegal forward pass on a trick play.
- 1:33:31SPEAKER_01: All right, that's on the coaching staff, the way they coached it.
- 1:33:35SPEAKER_01: He missed an Oakland-Loveland short.
- 1:33:38SPEAKER_01: Would have been a big game.
- 1:33:42SPEAKER_01: You know, he throws...
- 1:33:43SPEAKER_01: Throws the ball back right to Burden on a bubble.
- 1:33:46SPEAKER_01: He's got that head moving quick to the left, comes back to the right.
- 1:33:50SPEAKER_01: It's a big gain.
- 1:33:51SPEAKER_01: He got the move, the defense, and that was just what they needed for the big play.
- 1:33:57SPEAKER_01: Third and two, Durden, the DTs in his face.
- 1:34:00SPEAKER_01: He changed his direction twice on a crazy quilt scramble, gains five, first down.
- 1:34:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's capable of all this stuff.
- 1:34:09SPEAKER_01: Third and 11, early fourth quarter.
- 1:34:11SPEAKER_01: Ellis is a free runner at him.
- 1:34:13SPEAKER_01: Sidesteps and drills a Dunze for 21.
- 1:34:16SPEAKER_01: Another great play.
- 1:34:18SPEAKER_01: Third and nine, tight game.
- 1:34:21SPEAKER_01: Hits a Dunze for 21 coming out from his own one-yard line.
- 1:34:26SPEAKER_01: And he threw the ball from the one.
- 1:34:28SPEAKER_01: Third and one, two minutes left.
- 1:34:30SPEAKER_01: He gets Durden to jump.
- 1:34:32SPEAKER_01: He ran into a sack for minus 10, but he was saved by Santos.
- 1:34:36SPEAKER_01: That was kind of a bonehead play.
- 1:34:38SPEAKER_01: That's it for the Bear offense, G.
- 1:34:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson are about as in sync as they've been.
- 1:34:46SPEAKER_00: It just seems like receivers are open all over the field,
- 1:34:50SPEAKER_00: game to game,
- 1:34:51SPEAKER_00: and Caleb is hitting them in rhythm with timing throughout the course of a game,
- 1:34:57SPEAKER_00: which wasn't the case most of last season.
- 1:35:00SPEAKER_00: So, You've got to be encouraged by that.
- 1:35:04SPEAKER_00: If the Chicago Bears,
- 1:35:05SPEAKER_00: if you can get your running game even close to what it was at its peak last year
- 1:35:10SPEAKER_00: to have those in concert, the offense is a juggernaut.
- 1:35:14SPEAKER_00: I don't know how you stop them.
- 1:35:17SPEAKER_01: They need Manungai back, definitely.
- 1:35:21SPEAKER_01: Their old line is intact, right?
- 1:35:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:35:26SPEAKER_01: Their receiving core, they lost Komet.
- 1:35:29SPEAKER_01: That hurts them in the run game.
- 1:35:32SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, it's a good, it's a good team.
- 1:35:36SPEAKER_01: Petsing and who,
- 1:35:37SPEAKER_01: who the Lions have last year,
- 1:35:39SPEAKER_01: uh, John Morton, they're just not Ben Johnson, you know?
- 1:35:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:35:45SPEAKER_01: I didn't think an assistant coach would make that difference,
- 1:35:48SPEAKER_01: but the Lions have, they've missed Ben Johnson.
- 1:35:52SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:35:53SPEAKER_01: The Bear D line.
- 1:35:54SPEAKER_01: Um, You got Grady Jarrett, 42.
- 1:35:58SPEAKER_01: He hasn't worn down.
- 1:36:00SPEAKER_01: Kentavious Street, 23.
- 1:36:04SPEAKER_01: Lynch, 33.
- 1:36:05SPEAKER_01: Shamar Turner, 13.
- 1:36:08SPEAKER_01: Gallimore, 17.
- 1:36:09SPEAKER_01: And Vandenberg, five.
- 1:36:12SPEAKER_01: There's not a whole lot to say here, except Grady Jarrett, he's been their best player.
- 1:36:19SPEAKER_01: He had a couple of knockdowns, drew a hold on Walter Rouse with a pass rush.
- 1:36:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's got an upfield charge and a huge motor.
- 1:36:27SPEAKER_01: He always has for like 11 years.
- 1:36:29SPEAKER_01: He's playing better than he did last year.
- 1:36:32SPEAKER_01: I can say that.
- 1:36:33SPEAKER_01: I think that's accurate.
- 1:36:36SPEAKER_01: Street, you know, he's on the small side for a nose.
- 1:36:39SPEAKER_01: He does get bounced, but he doesn't really get buried.
- 1:36:42SPEAKER_01: I think he's got a big heart.
- 1:36:45SPEAKER_01: He pursues hard.
- 1:36:46SPEAKER_01: I think he's a battler.
- 1:36:48SPEAKER_01: He's been okay.
- 1:36:48SPEAKER_01: Now, they're not playing him many snaps.
- 1:36:51SPEAKER_01: But he's better than Gallimore.
- 1:36:52SPEAKER_01: He's better than Vandenberg.
- 1:36:54SPEAKER_01: Lynch is a power player who kind of plays five technique.
- 1:36:58SPEAKER_01: He's been okay.
- 1:37:00SPEAKER_01: Shamar Turner's got a chance.
- 1:37:01SPEAKER_01: He's a second round pick in 25.
- 1:37:04SPEAKER_01: He's been pretty stout.
- 1:37:05SPEAKER_01: He's been rather active.
- 1:37:08SPEAKER_01: He's a little laid off the ball at times.
- 1:37:13SPEAKER_01: They're playing Lynch ahead of him.
- 1:37:15SPEAKER_01: That might change.
- 1:37:18SPEAKER_01: Let's go outside.
- 1:37:20SPEAKER_01: This guy by the name of Croma, who is a free agent, he plays 14 snaps on the edge.
- 1:37:27SPEAKER_01: He's an interesting cat, Tyler.
- 1:37:31SPEAKER_01: I forgot his college.
- 1:37:32SPEAKER_01: He was a free agent three years ago.
- 1:37:35SPEAKER_01: He's 6'3.5", 274, 479.
- 1:37:39SPEAKER_01: The guy was really tough at the point of attack.
- 1:37:41SPEAKER_01: He's got a good low block shield on one play, kept the blockers away from his shins, no gain.
- 1:37:48SPEAKER_01: He's strong at the point, and he can help them.
- 1:37:51SPEAKER_01: Booker, he's been a disciplined player against the run.
- 1:37:55SPEAKER_01: They're good against the outside run.
- 1:37:56SPEAKER_01: They set the edge.
- 1:37:57SPEAKER_01: Those guys are well-coached.
- 1:37:59SPEAKER_01: And Hardy now,
- 1:38:00SPEAKER_01: who played 30-22 snaps,
- 1:38:03SPEAKER_01: he's become a pass rush threat here in the last two or three weeks.
- 1:38:08SPEAKER_01: He had a knockdown, and he had half a sack on a stunt against Pryor, his former teammate.
- 1:38:14SPEAKER_01: That was in 2.8.
- 1:38:15SPEAKER_01: So they're D-line, they're a bunch of battlers.
- 1:38:20SPEAKER_01: Could they, they traded Jervon Dexter, right?
- 1:38:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:38:24SPEAKER_01: Could they have used Dexter?
- 1:38:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:38:26SPEAKER_01: He's in Atlanta and he played, he's played pretty good.
- 1:38:31SPEAKER_01: This group's not bad.
- 1:38:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, you know, they don't have a huge guy.
- 1:38:36SPEAKER_01: They used to have that,
- 1:38:40SPEAKER_01: remember the big guy who started with a B, Andrew Billings.
- 1:38:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, but then they were playing with Chris Williams and Cowart.
- 1:38:53SPEAKER_01: Zach Pickens was a bust.
- 1:38:55SPEAKER_01: Jones was a veteran.
- 1:38:56SPEAKER_01: They've been kind of grab-bagging.
- 1:38:59SPEAKER_01: They're okay, as long as Jarrett doesn't get hurt.
- 1:39:02SPEAKER_01: All right, anything more about outside?
- 1:39:04SPEAKER_01: No, we covered those guys.
- 1:39:05SPEAKER_01: All right, all the linebackers.
- 1:39:08SPEAKER_01: So you still got TJ Edwards still injured.
- 1:39:12SPEAKER_01: So Jackson placed 54 snaps.
- 1:39:16SPEAKER_01: He had a great game.
- 1:39:17SPEAKER_01: It's taken him about three weeks to get back to where I thought he was last year.
- 1:39:22SPEAKER_01: Man, he gets to run stuff early.
- 1:39:23SPEAKER_01: He gets a tackle for loss.
- 1:39:25SPEAKER_01: He fires past Rouse, runs stuff.
- 1:39:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, when he arrives, he's a smaller guy, but he has a fury in him and he hits people.
- 1:39:33SPEAKER_01: He had a great pick, man against the tight end, down the seam.
- 1:39:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, he had great position on the thing.
- 1:39:40SPEAKER_01: And he fires against the run.
- 1:39:42SPEAKER_01: Now he's not as good as the guys in Minnesota.
- 1:39:45SPEAKER_01: He's not as good as Franklin in Green Bay.
- 1:39:50SPEAKER_01: I don't know about that.
- 1:39:51SPEAKER_01: He's playing pretty good football.
- 1:39:54SPEAKER_01: Sewell, he's another guy who goes 100 miles an hour.
- 1:39:57SPEAKER_01: He only played 19 snaps.
- 1:39:59SPEAKER_01: But he is a tough, tough guy.
- 1:40:01SPEAKER_01: And then Bush, who plays virtually every snap as the inside backer.
- 1:40:06SPEAKER_01: I think he's the green dot.
- 1:40:08SPEAKER_01: He's got a quick trigger.
- 1:40:09SPEAKER_01: Now, he's not like Jackson.
- 1:40:11SPEAKER_01: He'll slip and slide and dip.
- 1:40:13SPEAKER_01: He's not a take-on guy.
- 1:40:15SPEAKER_01: He gets covered up in the run game.
- 1:40:17SPEAKER_01: But, you know, as a pass rusher and in coverage, he's been okay.
- 1:40:21SPEAKER_01: Starting to grow on me a little bit.
- 1:40:22SPEAKER_01: He's not a great player.
- 1:40:24SPEAKER_01: I don't think he's as good as Edmonds, but he's okay.
- 1:40:26SPEAKER_01: All right, the secondary.
- 1:40:29SPEAKER_01: You know, Jalen Johnson, the left corner, he kind of prefers not to hit people too.
- 1:40:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, people have been saying that about him for five or six years,
- 1:40:39SPEAKER_01: and it's not as blatant as the safety in Green Bay,
- 1:40:44SPEAKER_01: but yet there are embarrassing moments.
- 1:40:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, May's scrambling.
- 1:40:53SPEAKER_01: He gets an extra seven because he had an old lay.
- 1:40:56SPEAKER_01: He didn't want to hit May the quarterback.
- 1:41:00SPEAKER_01: And then when Stevenson had that 48-yard touchdown at the end of the half,
- 1:41:05SPEAKER_01: he made a pathetic effort on that thing at the 20.
- 1:41:08SPEAKER_01: You don't even want to see that tape.
- 1:41:11SPEAKER_01: And then he had a pass interference.
- 1:41:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, he can cover.
- 1:41:14SPEAKER_01: Is he as good as Murphy in Minnesota?
- 1:41:16SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:41:17SPEAKER_01: Is he as good as, well,
- 1:41:23SPEAKER_00: I'll just go that far.
- 1:41:24SPEAKER_01: But Muhammad got hurt.
- 1:41:27SPEAKER_01: He made a terrible decision to go
- 1:41:29SPEAKER_01: wide on that Stevenson play.
- 1:41:30SPEAKER_01: I don't know what he was doing on that 48-yard touchdown.
- 1:41:33SPEAKER_00: He just started running the other direction.
- 1:41:36SPEAKER_01: I think he was worried about the guy going wide, Tyler.
- 1:41:39SPEAKER_01: I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.
- 1:41:41SPEAKER_01: So he's trying to take away the wide, thinking he had teammates, but they were all knocked up.
- 1:41:47SPEAKER_01: Like, you know,
- 1:41:49SPEAKER_01: Johnson didn't even want to try, and Thienemann ran into a blocker, and that was it.
- 1:41:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:41:56SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:41:58SPEAKER_01: Then Stevenson came in as a corner for Muhammad.
- 1:42:01SPEAKER_01: He was okay.
- 1:42:02SPEAKER_01: The Nickelback Gordon, same stuff.
- 1:42:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, he played 31 snaps this week.
- 1:42:09SPEAKER_01: He's a banger.
- 1:42:10SPEAKER_01: He's a blitz threat.
- 1:42:12SPEAKER_01: He's a hell of a player.
- 1:42:14SPEAKER_01: Lewis, one of the safeties, three flushes is a pass rusher.
- 1:42:19SPEAKER_01: So Dennis Allen is really bringing DBs right now.
- 1:42:22SPEAKER_01: He's not bringing Thienemann, although he had half a sack on a tight end chip.
- 1:42:27SPEAKER_01: But Lewis is a pretty good pass rusher, and he is a fearless hitter.
- 1:42:32SPEAKER_01: This guy comes in fast and hard.
- 1:42:34SPEAKER_01: So you got Lewis and Thienemann who really want to hit people.
- 1:42:38SPEAKER_01: Gordon really wants to hit.
- 1:42:40SPEAKER_01: Stevenson really wants to hit.
- 1:42:42SPEAKER_01: Johnson does not want to hit, and Muhammad's okay.
- 1:42:46SPEAKER_01: Thienemann,
- 1:42:46SPEAKER_01: he has knockback ability,
- 1:42:50SPEAKER_01: ex-college player, rookie, He's a hitter and he's been, he's had a good year.
- 1:42:56SPEAKER_01: So let's go to the special team.
- 1:42:58SPEAKER_01: Santos wins it from 50 or clincher from 58.
- 1:43:04SPEAKER_01: Career high, career long was 55.
- 1:43:07SPEAKER_01: This is that soldier feel where you're not supposed to be able to kick a ball that far.
- 1:43:12SPEAKER_01: He had a 53 that was no good.
- 1:43:14SPEAKER_01: And he also hit from 43 and 31.
- 1:43:17SPEAKER_01: Taylor punted good, just two.
- 1:43:20SPEAKER_01: Zavion Thomas hit a big sideline hole, 47 yards.
- 1:43:25SPEAKER_01: He's not going to run over anybody, but if he sees a hole, he's just blinding speed.
- 1:43:32SPEAKER_01: So that's what they're banking on with him.
- 1:43:34SPEAKER_01: Coverage was not nearly as good this week.
- 1:43:36SPEAKER_01: That's it for the Bears.
- 1:43:39SPEAKER_00: Were you surprised that Ben Johnson sent him out there to kick that after Caleb Williams' sack?
- 1:43:46SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:43:46SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:43:48SPEAKER_01: I love Santos, but not from 58 at Soldier.
- 1:43:53SPEAKER_00: He misses that.
- 1:43:54SPEAKER_00: Man, what a conversation could have been had Friday morning.
- 1:43:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:43:59SPEAKER_00: The way New England was moving the ball.
- 1:44:02SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 1:44:03SPEAKER_00: What didn't get discussed nearly enough were the Mike Vrabel decisions on fourth down.
- 1:44:09SPEAKER_00: I want to get the exact yardage right here.
- 1:44:12SPEAKER_00: Hang with me.
- 1:44:14SPEAKER_00: To punt on those two fourth downs in the fourth quarter with how
- 1:44:18SPEAKER_00: the Bears are moving the ball was just awful for
- 1:44:21SPEAKER_00: a coach who's usually pretty aggressive.
- 1:44:24SPEAKER_00: So yeah, at the start of the fourth quarter, so at this point, it's a 27-21 game.
- 1:44:30SPEAKER_00: Chicago has the lead.
- 1:44:32SPEAKER_00: And there's, yeah, this is the first play of the fourth quarter.
- 1:44:37SPEAKER_00: He punts on fourth and seven at the New England 43.
- 1:44:43SPEAKER_00: Your own 43-yard line.
- 1:44:45SPEAKER_01: It would have been a 61-yarder, right?
- 1:44:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:44:49SPEAKER_00: No, I'm talking the New England.
- 1:44:54SPEAKER_00: So this is his own 43-yard line variable.
- 1:44:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:44:58SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 1:44:59SPEAKER_00: But the way the game's going, you're not getting a stop.
- 1:45:05SPEAKER_00: You punt it back.
- 1:45:06SPEAKER_00: The Bears miss a field goal on their next drive.
- 1:45:10SPEAKER_00: So you get the ball back again.
- 1:45:11SPEAKER_00: And...
- 1:45:13SPEAKER_00: You've got great field position.
- 1:45:16SPEAKER_00: You move all of three yards.
- 1:45:18SPEAKER_00: So it's fourth and seven at your own 46, and you punt again.
- 1:45:24SPEAKER_00: And that's when the Bears drove down.
- 1:45:25SPEAKER_00: They made their field goal, and that's the game.
- 1:45:27SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:45:29SPEAKER_00: You don't have to go Dan Campbell, fourth and one at your own 24, whatever that was.
- 1:45:36SPEAKER_00: But I think the context of the game matters, just everything that you were detailing on.
- 1:45:41SPEAKER_00: Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams and these receivers getting open and
- 1:45:44SPEAKER_00: the line playing like they're playing.
- 1:45:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, DeAndre Swift,
- 1:45:49SPEAKER_00: battering Ram, he's got the hole in his game pants after he got blasted in the knee.
- 1:45:54SPEAKER_00: Play the game on your terms.
- 1:45:56SPEAKER_00: Drake May was playing so well against that blitz, I thought, hanging in there for New England.
- 1:46:02SPEAKER_00: It was one of those things, like,
- 1:46:03SPEAKER_00: in the moment,
- 1:46:03SPEAKER_00: I didn't think too much of it,
- 1:46:04SPEAKER_00: and then you think about it, it's like, God, what are you doing?
- 1:46:07I
- 1:46:13SPEAKER_01: I show my age when I talk about kicking field goals rather than going for it.
- 1:46:17SPEAKER_01: But when Dan Campbell had fourth and five at the six-yard line with
- 1:46:21SPEAKER_01: a three-point lead,
- 1:46:23SPEAKER_01: and he disdained the field goal,
- 1:46:25SPEAKER_01: and then he tried to run the ball,
- 1:46:27SPEAKER_01: they weren't knocking anybody an inch off the ball,
- 1:46:30SPEAKER_01: and he tries to run the damn thing.
- 1:46:32SPEAKER_01: I thought it was ridiculous.
- 1:46:35SPEAKER_01: And the Packers weren't really moving the ball.
- 1:46:37SPEAKER_01: Take a six-point lead.
- 1:46:38SPEAKER_01: Is there something wrong with that?
- 1:46:40SPEAKER_01: They're going to beat you on a bomb.
- 1:46:41SPEAKER_01: They beat you, but you're going to get the ball.
- 1:46:43SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:46:46SPEAKER_01: So what do we got?
- 1:46:47SPEAKER_01: The bikes now?
- 1:46:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:46:51SPEAKER_01: Let's get rid of that one.
- 1:46:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:46:54SPEAKER_00: Not as eventful.
- 1:46:56SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:46:58SPEAKER_01: 16 to 10, right?
- 1:47:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:47:01SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:47:01SPEAKER_01: So let's shorten this up, Tyler.
- 1:47:06SPEAKER_01: Offense.
- 1:47:07SPEAKER_01: They've won 11 in a row.
- 1:47:11SPEAKER_01: The Vikes and those 11 games,
- 1:47:14SPEAKER_01: they've allowed zero touchdowns and 15 points in the fourth quarter.
- 1:47:19SPEAKER_01: Their blitz rate was crazy.
- 1:47:21SPEAKER_01: 85%.
- 1:47:21SPEAKER_01: I read, I read something about that.
- 1:47:24SPEAKER_01: The first five games, they were 69, 70%.
- 1:47:29SPEAKER_01: So he's blitzing.
- 1:47:31SPEAKER_01: And you know,
- 1:47:31SPEAKER_01: when you really look at it,
- 1:47:33SPEAKER_01: their blitz stuff is better than anybody else's seven and eight men, the copycats.
- 1:47:38SPEAKER_01: It's just better.
- 1:47:39SPEAKER_01: Those linebackers and Harrison Smith, they are so in tune with what Flores wants.
- 1:47:44SPEAKER_01: It's just unreal.
- 1:47:46SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:47:47SPEAKER_01: So let's zip through the receivers.
- 1:47:50SPEAKER_01: There's not a lot to talk about.
- 1:47:52SPEAKER_01: Hawkinson or Addison or Jefferson, Bartholomew.
- 1:47:57SPEAKER_01: You know, I know the run game.
- 1:47:59SPEAKER_01: They miss Oliver, who's out for the year.
- 1:48:02SPEAKER_01: He's that run blocking tight end for about the last seven years there, five years at least.
- 1:48:07SPEAKER_00: It's a good player.
- 1:48:08SPEAKER_01: They miss him.
- 1:48:08SPEAKER_01: They're playing Yerasek and Bartholomew.
- 1:48:12SPEAKER_01: Jennings is a solid number three receiver.
- 1:48:15SPEAKER_01: All right, let's look at the line.
- 1:48:18SPEAKER_01: I guess the only thing really to talk about is Huber, the left guard from Wisconsin.
- 1:48:25SPEAKER_01: This is maybe his second or third start replacing Donovan Jackson, who's out for the year.
- 1:48:31SPEAKER_01: I can't remember.
- 1:48:31SPEAKER_01: Knee, I guess it is.
- 1:48:33SPEAKER_01: So Huber, interesting player.
- 1:48:38SPEAKER_01: He played darn good.
- 1:48:40SPEAKER_01: Now, he's up against Buckner a lot in this game,
- 1:48:44SPEAKER_01: and that's a heck of a matchup against DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart.
- 1:48:48SPEAKER_01: That's obviously one of the best DT tandems in the league.
- 1:48:53SPEAKER_01: Hubert run blocks effectively, man.
- 1:48:55SPEAKER_01: He keeps his feet.
- 1:48:57SPEAKER_01: He keeps moving and stays active.
- 1:49:00SPEAKER_01: He moves well on poles.
- 1:49:02SPEAKER_01: He's pesty.
- 1:49:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's on the ground a tad too much,
- 1:49:06SPEAKER_01: but, you know, But he's got a little bit of a mean streak.
- 1:49:10SPEAKER_01: One time he shoved Buckner down in a pass rush and kept him down.
- 1:49:15SPEAKER_01: I kind of liked the way he finished on the guy.
- 1:49:18SPEAKER_01: You know, Huber, he's in his second year.
- 1:49:23SPEAKER_01: He's 6'5".
- 1:49:24SPEAKER_01: He was not drafted.
- 1:49:25SPEAKER_01: 311, 524, 40.
- 1:49:29SPEAKER_01: Short arms though, that might get him in the end.
- 1:49:31SPEAKER_01: 32 and a quarter.
- 1:49:34SPEAKER_01: 26 on the bench, no test score.
- 1:49:37SPEAKER_01: Uh, so far so good.
- 1:49:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're not, they had 136 on the ground.
- 1:49:41SPEAKER_01: So the guy played pretty decent.
- 1:49:43SPEAKER_01: Brandle, the center, he's good.
- 1:49:47SPEAKER_01: Nothing much to say there.
- 1:49:49SPEAKER_01: Fry's had a good game.
- 1:49:51SPEAKER_01: And O'Neal, boy O'Neal, he is in his ninth year and he still really moves well.
- 1:49:58SPEAKER_01: He's excellent in space.
- 1:50:01SPEAKER_01: Um, he's just very athletic.
- 1:50:04SPEAKER_01: He, uh,
- 1:50:07SPEAKER_01: Bubble screens.
- 1:50:08SPEAKER_01: He gets out there.
- 1:50:09SPEAKER_01: One was 11 yards.
- 1:50:11SPEAKER_01: It's a good player.
- 1:50:13SPEAKER_01: Um, running backs, Aaron Jones had a knee injury, wrecked his knee that he's had problems with.
- 1:50:18SPEAKER_01: He only played 15 snaps.
- 1:50:21SPEAKER_01: So fortunately they had Mason back and Mason played 38 and did a good job.
- 1:50:27SPEAKER_01: 15 for 68.
- 1:50:29SPEAKER_01: Mason's a banger.
- 1:50:31SPEAKER_01: They missed him.
- 1:50:33SPEAKER_01: Um,
- 1:50:35SPEAKER_01: They move down the field,
- 1:50:37SPEAKER_01: and then they got third and one,
- 1:50:38SPEAKER_01: and Mason's not on the field, and Jones gets stopped.
- 1:50:42SPEAKER_01: And then fourth and one, they try to run it again, and they get stopped.
- 1:50:45SPEAKER_01: Why wasn't Mason on the field?
- 1:50:47SPEAKER_01: He's the power back, man.
- 1:50:50SPEAKER_01: Huber did miss Latou,
- 1:50:52SPEAKER_01: the first-round pick from the Colts,
- 1:50:55SPEAKER_01: in the B gap,
- 1:50:56SPEAKER_01: and Mason just broke the damn thing, broke through there, and gained five.
- 1:51:02SPEAKER_01: He can spin off plays.
- 1:51:04SPEAKER_01: You know, he's got some speed.
- 1:51:05SPEAKER_01: He's got some adjust.
- 1:51:07SPEAKER_01: Pass blocking was a little shaky.
- 1:51:10SPEAKER_01: And then Bredesen, the fullback.
- 1:51:13SPEAKER_01: Michigan can't run the ball as far as my little finger.
- 1:51:17SPEAKER_01: I still go back to Michigan missing Bredesen, the fullback.
- 1:51:20SPEAKER_01: But in this game, he dropped the ball, gave up a knockdown, missed a block.
- 1:51:25SPEAKER_01: He was not impressive in his 11 snaps.
- 1:51:28SPEAKER_01: Now let's go to Murray.
- 1:51:30SPEAKER_01: We talked about his body language, right, Tyler, and the look on the face.
- 1:51:34SPEAKER_01: We won't get into that again.
- 1:51:38SPEAKER_01: He was not very impressive.
- 1:51:40SPEAKER_01: 14 for 24 for 150.
- 1:51:43SPEAKER_01: Made some plays with his legs, no question.
- 1:51:45SPEAKER_01: The 35-yard run kind of settled the game, first play of the fourth quarter.
- 1:51:54SPEAKER_01: Threw some balls high on the flat.
- 1:51:58SPEAKER_01: Jennings dropped the touchdown 30 yards would have been that would have helped the numbers.
- 1:52:03SPEAKER_01: I threw some ball through a ball behind Jefferson on a 15 yard and
- 1:52:09SPEAKER_01: took a sack and 4.1.
- 1:52:12SPEAKER_01: I guess what I'm trying to say is game right now is not tight, you know.
- 1:52:18SPEAKER_01: He's just trying to.
- 1:52:23SPEAKER_01: He probably should have had more reps in the summer,
- 1:52:25SPEAKER_01: but they were still, you know, battling with JJ.
- 1:52:27SPEAKER_01: I get that.
- 1:52:29SPEAKER_01: So he's feeling, then he got injured.
- 1:52:32SPEAKER_01: They're not a very good offensive team.
- 1:52:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, where in the hell do they rank on offense?
- 1:52:39SPEAKER_01: 29th at 281.
- 1:52:41SPEAKER_01: So they're six and L,
- 1:52:42SPEAKER_01: but they can't,
- 1:52:43SPEAKER_01: they got a real tough schedule coming up now and
- 1:52:45SPEAKER_01: they just can't do it.
- 1:52:46SPEAKER_01: So that's
- 1:52:47SPEAKER_01: it on the Viking hole.
- 1:52:50SPEAKER_00: Do you think those L's start adding up there with the schedule?
- 1:52:53SPEAKER_00: On tap?
- 1:52:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:52:54SPEAKER_00: Do you?
- 1:52:58SPEAKER_00: Here, let's pull up their schedule.
- 1:53:00SPEAKER_01: Tyler, they've not had an injury on defense, right?
- 1:53:03SPEAKER_01: Zero.
- 1:53:04SPEAKER_01: That can't continue.
- 1:53:05SPEAKER_01: Nobody's hurt.
- 1:53:06SPEAKER_01: Nobody's been hurt all year.
- 1:53:09SPEAKER_00: Well, I think that...
- 1:53:11SPEAKER_00: At Detroit,
- 1:53:14SPEAKER_00: home against Buffalo Monday night,
- 1:53:17SPEAKER_00: at Green Bay,
- 1:53:18SPEAKER_00: home against San Francisco, home against Atlanta, who just beat San Francisco...
- 1:53:24SPEAKER_00: Then you got Carolina at New England, home Detroit, home Washington at New York Jets.
- 1:53:30SPEAKER_00: And then the season ends at home against the Chicago Bears.
- 1:53:35SPEAKER_01: So games 15 and 16 are the only relief, right?
- 1:53:42SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, you've got Carolina in there, depending on how you feel there.
- 1:53:46SPEAKER_00: And then the Jets.
- 1:53:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:53:49SPEAKER_00: Washington, I suppose.
- 1:53:50SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:53:51SPEAKER_01: My battery's getting low, Tyler.
- 1:53:53SPEAKER_01: Let me... Oh, boy.
- 1:53:55SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:53:56SPEAKER_01: Let's go to the defense.
- 1:53:58SPEAKER_01: Rifle through it.
- 1:53:59SPEAKER_01: Rodriguez is a really good, tough guy.
- 1:54:02SPEAKER_01: Redmond has more ability,
- 1:54:04SPEAKER_01: but yet they're both late picks or free agents who are really good players.
- 1:54:11SPEAKER_01: Orange and Banks on that 38-yard touchdown.
- 1:54:15SPEAKER_01: Banks and Orange were on the field and Rodriguez and Redmond were out.
- 1:54:19SPEAKER_01: That's the only long play the Colts made all day.
- 1:54:22SPEAKER_01: Banks got displaced by Raymond, the good left tackle.
- 1:54:25SPEAKER_01: He was high on the thing.
- 1:54:27SPEAKER_01: Orange got sealed by Quentin Nelson.
- 1:54:29SPEAKER_01: Katie, bar the door, you're gone.
- 1:54:33SPEAKER_01: Ingram Dawkins, he plays a lot.
- 1:54:36SPEAKER_01: He's okay.
- 1:54:38SPEAKER_01: Turner, Van Noy's been a real plus.
- 1:54:41SPEAKER_01: Van Ginkle.
- 1:54:43SPEAKER_01: Van Ginkle and Turner are good players.
- 1:54:45SPEAKER_01: They're healthy.
- 1:54:46SPEAKER_01: Cashman and Wilson.
- 1:54:48SPEAKER_01: They play every snap.
- 1:54:50SPEAKER_01: They're fierce.
- 1:54:51SPEAKER_01: They're smart.
- 1:54:54SPEAKER_01: Boy, that's a really a good front seven.
- 1:54:56SPEAKER_01: And the secondary is healthy.
- 1:54:58SPEAKER_01: Metellus plays every snap, kind of runs the show.
- 1:55:01SPEAKER_01: Harrison comes in and runs the show, plays half the time.
- 1:55:05SPEAKER_01: You got Rodgers.
- 1:55:08SPEAKER_01: He's been good.
- 1:55:08SPEAKER_01: He tackles for a small guy.
- 1:55:10SPEAKER_01: He really contributes.
- 1:55:12SPEAKER_01: Murphy's maybe the, he was the best corner in the division last year.
- 1:55:15SPEAKER_01: He might be now too.
- 1:55:17SPEAKER_01: And Pierre's not a bad nickel, the ex-stealer.
- 1:55:21SPEAKER_01: Same thing about Flores.
- 1:55:23SPEAKER_01: They're really good.
- 1:55:24SPEAKER_01: The kickers, Reichardt finally missed.
- 1:55:27SPEAKER_01: He kicked one low, and it was blocked from 59.
- 1:55:30SPEAKER_01: Kickoffs were good.
- 1:55:31SPEAKER_01: The punter was so-so.
- 1:55:34SPEAKER_01: Price got hit hard by Taylor Britt.
- 1:55:37SPEAKER_01: I think he came back.
- 1:55:39SPEAKER_01: He got hit in the head.
- 1:55:39SPEAKER_01: He's the NFL's best on kickoffs, I think, and punts or something.
- 1:55:44SPEAKER_01: The coverage was not very good.
- 1:55:46SPEAKER_01: That's the Vikes, Tyler.
- 1:55:47SPEAKER_00: We're going to learn a lot about the Minnesota Vikings now.
- 1:55:52SPEAKER_00: I'm more hopeful than you in this Kyler Murray, Kevin O'Connell union.
- 1:55:59SPEAKER_00: You know, you get the Juwan Jennings play, the missed field goal.
- 1:56:05SPEAKER_01: Probably could have been more of a blowout than what you saw.
- 1:56:07SPEAKER_00: It wasn't, you know, not going to make excuses.
- 1:56:10SPEAKER_00: It wasn't very pretty.
- 1:56:13SPEAKER_00: But I think this scheme,
- 1:56:17SPEAKER_00: the difficulty of it, needing the reps, needing to get used to those receivers.
- 1:56:22SPEAKER_00: I still like the playmaking ability of Kyler Murray.
- 1:56:26SPEAKER_00: Although J.J.
- 1:56:27SPEAKER_00: McCarthy, man,
- 1:56:28SPEAKER_00: what a debut start with the New York Giants winning at Houston with some of
- 1:56:33SPEAKER_00: the plays he made.
- 1:56:36SPEAKER_00: It's going to be interesting to see where this goes in Minnesota.
- 1:56:38SPEAKER_00: But even with the tougher schedule,
- 1:56:40SPEAKER_00: Bob, I still think that I would much prefer Kyla Murray over J.J. McCarthy.
- 1:56:45SPEAKER_00: And I think that if you're working through it,
- 1:56:48SPEAKER_00: you'd rather work through it while you're getting wins and you're
- 1:56:51SPEAKER_00: the only undefeated team in the league.
- 1:56:55SPEAKER_00: Because if it does at some point get to a new gear, you're cooking with gas.
- 1:57:03SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:57:04SPEAKER_00: Hit us with a memory before you lose power.
- 1:57:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:57:07SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:57:08SPEAKER_01: So with the Packers just having played Detroit,
- 1:57:12SPEAKER_01: And Michigan,
- 1:57:13SPEAKER_01: Michigan State,
- 1:57:14SPEAKER_01: 10 days from now, I started thinking about Hank Bulla, B-U-L-L-O-U-G-H,
- 1:57:22SPEAKER_01: Henry.
- 1:57:23SPEAKER_01: Lee Remmel coined him the doctor of defense,
- 1:57:26SPEAKER_01: called him colorful in the 91 press guide, and he was.
- 1:57:30SPEAKER_01: Gap-toothed, he was something else, man.
- 1:57:34SPEAKER_01: Played at Michigan State when they were coming of age on the 54 Rose Bowl.
- 1:57:40SPEAKER_01: Drafted by the Pack in 55,
- 1:57:42SPEAKER_01: fifth round as a guard, was playing, had to leave for two years, service hitch.
- 1:57:49SPEAKER_01: MSU's first family of linebackers is his son, Shane, played linebacker at MSU.
- 1:57:55SPEAKER_01: His son, Chuck, played four years in the NFL as a linebacker, coached in the NFL.
- 1:58:00SPEAKER_01: He's now at LSU.
- 1:58:01SPEAKER_01: His grandson's Max, his linebacker coach at MSU.
- 1:58:05SPEAKER_01: Byron played for MSU.
- 1:58:08SPEAKER_01: Riley played in the, I mean, okay, on and on and on.
- 1:58:12SPEAKER_01: Hank was something else.
- 1:58:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's really one of the pioneers of the 3-4 defense, and that started with New England.
- 1:58:22SPEAKER_01: He was D.C. under Chuck Fairbanks in the early to mid-70s, and he kind of popularized the 34.
- 1:58:30SPEAKER_01: I'm still going, Tyler?
- 1:58:35SPEAKER_00: You're good.
- 1:58:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah,
- 1:58:36SPEAKER_00: I was just looking up his Bills tenure because that was the coach who went 4-17
- 1:58:42SPEAKER_00: before Barb Levy.
- 1:58:43SPEAKER_00: So it's good.
- 1:58:43SPEAKER_00: Let's get some good Hank memories going here.
- 1:58:46SPEAKER_01: So Henry coached 11 years at Michigan State as alma mater.
- 1:58:51SPEAKER_01: And he's part of that George Perlis.
- 1:58:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm a Michigan man and he's Spartan, but I understand that Spartan.
- 1:59:01SPEAKER_01: Mystique or Charisma, and they really got it.
- 1:59:04SPEAKER_01: And those guys are great guys up there.
- 1:59:06SPEAKER_01: They're Raleigh Dodge, and he was part of this thing, man.
- 1:59:10SPEAKER_01: Buck Nystrom.
- 1:59:12SPEAKER_01: Michigan State,
- 1:59:12SPEAKER_01: he was there 11 years,
- 1:59:14SPEAKER_01: won a national title under Duffy Doherty in 65 as defensive coordinator.
- 1:59:21SPEAKER_01: So in 1984, Forrest Gregg, when he got hired in Green Bay, he hired...
- 1:59:28SPEAKER_01: Hank to be his defensive coordinator.
- 1:59:30SPEAKER_01: They had been in the Super Bowl together.
- 1:59:33SPEAKER_01: And everything was great until Hank,
- 1:59:36SPEAKER_01: who had never been a head coach,
- 1:59:39SPEAKER_01: got a chance with the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL.
- 1:59:44SPEAKER_01: There was four or five games left in that 84 season.
- 1:59:49SPEAKER_01: So now Hank was a bit of an eccentric.
- 1:59:53SPEAKER_01: So I was at a minicamp with him the day the news broke.
- 1:59:57SPEAKER_01: So we're walking up in the parking lot and I'm asking him questions at the end of a mini camp.
- 2:00:04SPEAKER_01: And he says, hey, he says, I'm always helping you.
- 2:00:07SPEAKER_01: He says, McGinn, come on, help me clean out my office.
- 2:00:10SPEAKER_01: So we go up the back loading deck at 1265 Lombardi and he's handing me stuff, his winter boots.
- 2:00:18SPEAKER_01: I'm hauling out his winter boots to his car because he had resigned that morning.
- 2:00:25SPEAKER_01: Okay, well, The league folded after that season, so he never coached a game.
- 2:00:32SPEAKER_01: He was in Green Bay 145 days.
- 2:00:36SPEAKER_01: Then he became D coordinator of the Bills in 85.
- 2:00:40SPEAKER_01: And when Kay Stevenson, I believe, got the boot at mid-year, Henry took over.
- 2:00:47SPEAKER_01: And he eventually went 4-17 with the Bills.
- 2:00:51SPEAKER_01: He was fired nine games in,
- 2:00:54SPEAKER_01: and the man chosen to replace him,
- 2:00:55SPEAKER_01: Marv Levy, Had a little bit of success, didn't he?
- 2:00:59SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 2:01:01SPEAKER_01: So Hank went to MSU back to his alma mater in 87 as a volunteer.
- 2:01:06SPEAKER_01: And then when Lindy and Fonny got named head coach of the Packers in January of 88,
- 2:01:13SPEAKER_01: he brought Hank along as D coordinator.
- 2:01:16SPEAKER_01: Now, Forrest had told me, Forrest Gregg had told me that Henry...
- 2:01:25SPEAKER_01: Hank was a good guy, man.
- 2:01:26SPEAKER_01: And that whenever they were on the road, he would bring a duffel bag along.
- 2:01:33SPEAKER_01: And Forrest referred to that as the bulla bag, the bulla bag, bulla bag, bulla bag.
- 2:01:41SPEAKER_01: Everything in the room,
- 2:01:42SPEAKER_01: from lotions to shampoo to towels to coasters, everything went in the bulla bag.
- 2:01:49SPEAKER_01: Every trip.
- 2:01:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:01:53SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 2:01:53SPEAKER_01: So then, I mean,
- 2:01:54SPEAKER_01: I interviewed Hank hundreds of times and many times practice was open during
- 2:01:59SPEAKER_01: the regular season, you know, Packers were pretty bad then.
- 2:02:03SPEAKER_01: So we'd walk up through the parking lot and then often Hank would go over to
- 2:02:09SPEAKER_01: the mobile gas station, the corner of Ridge and what would that be?
- 2:02:14SPEAKER_01: Ashland Avenue.
- 2:02:16SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:02:17SPEAKER_01: That's where Titletown Brewing is now or something there.
- 2:02:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:02:21SPEAKER_01: You want to buy the newspaper.
- 2:02:23SPEAKER_01: You buy the Press Gazette or the Journal, Sentinel, I don't know.
- 2:02:27SPEAKER_01: It was a Journal and the Sentinel, two separate papers.
- 2:02:30SPEAKER_01: And I'd keep asking him questions.
- 2:02:33SPEAKER_01: And then he'd say, you know, McGinn, you're really a shit disturber.
- 2:02:40SPEAKER_01: I says, okay, a couple more questions.
- 2:02:43SPEAKER_01: I try to get them on, you know, back on point.
- 2:02:46SPEAKER_01: So then, so I guess the final story.
- 2:02:50SPEAKER_01: So Hank, I mean,
- 2:02:51SPEAKER_01: he inherited the worst defense in the league,
- 2:02:54SPEAKER_01: and his first year, Green Bay ranked seventh as their best finish in 14 years.
- 2:03:00SPEAKER_01: He had 41 takeaways that year.
- 2:03:04SPEAKER_01: The team was terrible.
- 2:03:05SPEAKER_01: His defenses ranked 7th, 16th, 22th, and 10th.
- 2:03:08SPEAKER_01: He did the job.
- 2:03:10SPEAKER_01: The players loved him.
- 2:03:11SPEAKER_01: He was unorthodox.
- 2:03:13SPEAKER_01: He was customized game plans.
- 2:03:16SPEAKER_01: So Hank passed, well, okay, so...
- 2:03:19SPEAKER_01: A good friend of mine is in the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association,
- 2:03:26SPEAKER_01: and they always have golf outings every summer, right?
- 2:03:29SPEAKER_01: So he told me this a couple years ago.
- 2:03:31SPEAKER_01: He was in the group with Hank,
- 2:03:33SPEAKER_01: and Hank's in the cart keeping score for he and his partner,
- 2:03:37SPEAKER_01: and this other guy was in a different cart.
- 2:03:39SPEAKER_01: Well, it's backed up on like hole 15 or 16,
- 2:03:43SPEAKER_01: he tells me,
- 2:03:46SPEAKER_01: and he kind of sauntered over by Hank's cart,
- 2:03:48SPEAKER_01: and he's Looking at the scorecard, how his team was doing.
- 2:03:53SPEAKER_01: And he says to him,
- 2:03:54SPEAKER_01: Hank, next to the number on those holes, you got an M and a C. What's that mean?
- 2:04:02SPEAKER_01: An M and a C. Now, you're not a golfer, Tyler, so you may not get this too much.
- 2:04:08SPEAKER_01: So Hank said, well, the M means I took a mulligan, and C means I cheated.
- 2:04:14SPEAKER_01: Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
- 2:04:20SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 2:04:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, my gosh.
- 2:04:24SPEAKER_01: He passed away in 2019 in East Lansing.
- 2:04:27SPEAKER_00: All his family are Spartan linebackers.
- 2:04:30SPEAKER_01: Earlier, I said Lee Remmel coined the phrase doctor of defense.
- 2:04:34SPEAKER_01: That came earlier, maybe from Al Haim of the Bengals, the OPR guy.
- 2:04:39SPEAKER_00: So that's it.
- 2:04:40SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, Max Bullock.
- 2:04:43SPEAKER_01: Bullock.
- 2:04:44SPEAKER_00: Bullock, okay.
- 2:04:45SPEAKER_01: One hell of a coach.
- 2:04:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:04:48SPEAKER_01: God, he was really funny, really fun, and a real shrewd coach, man.
- 2:04:53SPEAKER_01: Good guy.
- 2:04:55SPEAKER_00: Man, I love these stories.
- 2:04:57SPEAKER_00: So what seasons, again, were those in Green Bay as the D.C.?
- 2:05:01SPEAKER_01: 88 to 91.
- 2:05:02SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:05:03SPEAKER_00: The Infante era.
- 2:05:05SPEAKER_00: So he wasn't around for the Jim McMahon body slam then.
- 2:05:11SPEAKER_00: I want to say that was a little before.
- 2:05:13SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 2:05:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's I can't get enough of those teams, though.
- 2:05:17SPEAKER_00: It's like the forgotten era of Packer football.
- 2:05:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, most fans would love to forget those,
- 2:05:23SPEAKER_00: but it's great hearing these stories of all the Bart star tales that you have
- 2:05:28SPEAKER_00: from coaching and those battles.
- 2:05:31SPEAKER_00: It's absolutely part of this team's history.
- 2:05:33SPEAKER_00: It shouldn't be a race.
- 2:05:34SPEAKER_00: That's where you get the best stories.
- 2:05:36SPEAKER_00: Those three decades in between.
- 2:05:40SPEAKER_00: And the access you had, you know.
- 2:05:41SPEAKER_00: The access, yeah.
- 2:05:42SPEAKER_01: Any day I wanted,
- 2:05:43SPEAKER_01: I could walk back 15 minutes from the practice field down on South Oneida by
- 2:05:48SPEAKER_01: the Brown County Arena,
- 2:05:49SPEAKER_01: up to the gas station and back, you know, just going along, holding court.
- 2:05:54SPEAKER_01: And, you know,
- 2:05:55SPEAKER_01: how's that middle linebacker playing, Hank,
- 2:05:57SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 2:05:57SPEAKER_01: and what are you going to do against that Colt offensive line Sunday or whatever?
- 2:06:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:06:02SPEAKER_01: And he'd talk.
- 2:06:05SPEAKER_00: What a time.
- 2:06:06SPEAKER_00: Hey, we'll fight for the access best we can within the parameters that are supplied.
- 2:06:11SPEAKER_00: That is for sure.
- 2:06:12SPEAKER_00: Whether it's Green Bay or elsewhere, sitting down with guys, getting into their worlds.
- 2:06:17SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it'd be great to go back to those times some way, somehow.
- 2:06:21SPEAKER_00: That must have been something else.
- 2:06:23SPEAKER_00: You shit disturber.
- 2:06:26SPEAKER_00: The highest of compliments, really.
- 2:06:28SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 2:06:29SPEAKER_01: I thought so.
- 2:06:29SPEAKER_01: And I didn't want to let him know that.
- 2:06:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:06:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, definitely not.
- 2:06:33SPEAKER_01: I just wanted to change the subject and get back to the notes I had to write that night.
- 2:06:39SPEAKER_00: Well, hey, thanks for another phenomenal pod, Bob.
- 2:06:42SPEAKER_00: And thanks to everybody out there for watching, listening, reading, sharing with your friends.
- 2:06:48SPEAKER_00: No gambling ads ever on the Tyne Bob pod, real football, anything you hear or read at Golong.
- 2:06:55SPEAKER_00: And it's only because of you.
- 2:06:57SPEAKER_00: So we'd love it if you shared with a loved one and we keep this thing growing.
- 2:07:01SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much, everyone.
- 2:07:03SPEAKER_00: Thank you for listening, guys.
- 2:07:05[music]
