Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome back to a new episode of podcast on the Brink.
- 0:20Speaker 1: It's Wednesday, April twenty third. The transfer portal officially closed
- 0:25Speaker 1: for new entries, but that doesn't mean the recruiting has
- 0:27Speaker 1: stopped for most schools, I would say at this point
- 0:30Speaker 1: around the country still putting together their rosters for next season.
- 0:35Speaker 1: On today's episode of Podcasts on the Break, we're gonna
- 0:36Speaker 1: be joined by an old friend. William McDermott, formerly Ev
- 0:39Speaker 1: Inside the Hall, is now doing a variety of different things.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Still writes a little bit about IU basketball on his
- 0:46Speaker 1: own sub stack, but his main gig is working on
- 0:49Speaker 1: the radio for the Louisville Sports Network. Get to William
- 0:54Speaker 1: in just a second. One to take a moment to
- 0:56Speaker 1: remind you of this episode of Podcasts on the Brink,

- 1:01Speaker 1: season is over doesn't mean the fun stops. Spring is

- 1:27Speaker 1: last time we spoke it was before the Battle for Atlantis.
- 1:32Speaker 1: How the world has changed since then in terms of
- 1:36Speaker 1: Indiana basketball When you watch those games, How shocked were
- 1:42Speaker 1: you at just how that first game went in Atlantis?
- 1:46Speaker 2: Well, I definitely shocked, but I think part of me also,
- 1:52Speaker 2: and I think a lot of people who follow I
- 1:54Speaker 2: you closely, they weren't that shocked. And to me, looking
- 1:59Speaker 2: back on the season, that game was kind of I
- 2:04Speaker 2: think it was just kind of an eye opening result
- 2:07Speaker 2: for a lot of people in the fan base. And
- 2:09Speaker 2: I think that was a big turning point for a
- 2:11Speaker 2: lot of people in the fan base if they hadn't
- 2:13Speaker 2: been turned off already on the Mike Woodson era. But
- 2:18Speaker 2: certainly it was a disastrous result from IU. And I
- 2:23Speaker 2: just remember the way that you know, you played them
- 2:27Speaker 2: close in the first half, and it kind of they
- 2:29Speaker 2: were teeter tottering, and then Louisville went on a little
- 2:31Speaker 2: bit of a push to end the first half and
- 2:33Speaker 2: then coming out of the locker room, I mean, it
- 2:36Speaker 2: was just like a bomb went off. Louisville they were
- 2:38Speaker 2: just they couldn't Miles Rice could not handle the pressure.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Indiana they looked lost, They couldn't get the ball up
- 2:45Speaker 2: the floor, lazy defensively. It just was a ridiculous, ridiculous
- 2:52Speaker 2: second half. One of the biggest implosions I can remember seeing,
- 2:58Speaker 2: at least following in terms of a covering basketball standpoint.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yeah, my dad wrote at some point after that game
- 3:04Speaker 1: that that was kind of the beginning of the end
- 3:05Speaker 1: for Mike Woodson, and I think some people responded to like, no,
- 3:08Speaker 1: he had still had a whole season. But if you
- 3:10Speaker 1: watch that game closely enough, it was foreshadowing of what
- 3:13Speaker 1: was to come. We saw so many performances, maybe not
- 3:16Speaker 1: to that level because then Zaga game was, I guess
- 3:19Speaker 1: a little bit better. But then but then you had
- 3:20Speaker 1: the performances against Illinois at home, and you had the
- 3:23Speaker 1: Iowa performance where it was it was basically a couple
- 3:26Speaker 1: of months later and it was the same thing. So
- 3:28Speaker 1: in many ways, you're right, it was kind of the
- 3:31Speaker 1: just a turning point, and it kind of also showed
- 3:33Speaker 1: just how much how shaky the ground was that Mike
- 3:37Speaker 1: Woodson was standing on in terms of the fan base
- 3:39Speaker 1: that it after what they did in the portal. It
- 3:42Speaker 1: basically just took getting blown out one time for most
- 3:46Speaker 1: of the people to be out on it. So again,
- 3:48Speaker 1: don't want to rehash to Mike Woodson's situation, but I
- 3:50Speaker 1: just thought it was funny to bring up because that
- 3:52Speaker 1: was the last time you got on the show. You've
- 3:53Speaker 1: done obviously a lot of work. I just want to
- 3:56Speaker 1: check on you write real quick professionally because you know
- 3:59Speaker 1: you have had, you know, a transition now to the
- 4:02Speaker 1: real world working down for the Louisville Sports Network. How
- 4:07Speaker 1: was that that first year for you do in football
- 4:09Speaker 1: and basketball?
- 4:10Speaker 2: It was great. I mean, I think when you show
- 4:13Speaker 2: up every single day and you're at every single game
- 4:17Speaker 2: and you have a role in every single game, I
- 4:20Speaker 2: think you kind of develop a sense of appreciation for
- 4:23Speaker 2: the people that do show up every single day and
- 4:26Speaker 2: do it because I think you're working in sports media,
- 4:29Speaker 2: working and broadcasting like it's different. I mean, I had
- 4:33Speaker 2: to work on Thanksgiving Day, as did you. I had
- 4:36Speaker 2: to work on New Year's Day and stuff like that,
- 4:39Speaker 2: and that was all very different for me. But it's
- 4:41Speaker 2: also part of what comes with the job. And then
- 4:44Speaker 2: now it's the off season and can kind of sit
- 4:47Speaker 2: back and relax a little bit more. But I guess
- 4:49Speaker 2: with the portal open and everything now, there never really
- 4:52Speaker 2: is an off season. But it was a really fun
- 4:55Speaker 2: first year. I think I learned a lot, I got
- 4:58Speaker 2: a lot better, and definitely things that I'm going to
- 5:00Speaker 2: carry out with me on the rest of the way
- 5:03Speaker 2: through this journey.
- 5:03Speaker 1: So so you've you've still stayed engaged with AU basketball.
- 5:08Speaker 1: I know you're still pretty active on x and you
- 5:11Speaker 1: write a lot of stuff on your sub sub stack.
- 5:13Speaker 1: What's kind of made you continue to stay drawn? Obviously
- 5:17Speaker 1: went to IU, you wrote Friendside the Hall, you worked
- 5:19Speaker 1: in other student media outlets. Why have you kind of
- 5:22Speaker 1: wanted to still stay engaged in terms of writing about
- 5:24Speaker 1: the team and a lot of the breakdowns you've been
- 5:26Speaker 1: doing recently been pretty in depth and you're you're taking
- 5:29Speaker 1: a lot of time doing that. So I'm just kind
- 5:31Speaker 1: of curious, you know why you still wanted to stay
- 5:33Speaker 1: engaged with that.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I just love basketball. I love IU basketball. I think
- 5:40Speaker 2: anybody who's ever walked into Assembly Hall, I think knows
- 5:45Speaker 2: that that place just has a way of sucking you
- 5:47Speaker 2: in and getting underneath your skin, and it definitely did
- 5:51Speaker 2: that to me, and the program did even you know,
- 5:55Speaker 2: I covered the team for three years, two of them
- 5:58Speaker 2: with you, and I think, you know, being able to
- 6:00Speaker 2: be in the building and the places I got to
- 6:03Speaker 2: go is really cool. And I just wanted to keep
- 6:06Speaker 2: following it because I had a follower base that, you know,
- 6:09Speaker 2: I think that I developed that appreciated my content and
- 6:12Speaker 2: knew that if they were to look for IU basketball
- 6:15Speaker 2: stuff that I could provide that. And so I obviously
- 6:17Speaker 2: wanted to continue writing as well, and that was a
- 6:20Speaker 2: way that I can do that through the blog and
- 6:22Speaker 2: the newsletter. So yeah, good stuff.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I've been enjoying following and good stuff. It's one reason
- 6:29Speaker 1: I want to have you, honest, because you have taken
- 6:31Speaker 1: a lot of time to look at a lot of
- 6:32Speaker 1: these players in Indiana's I just want to kind of
- 6:35Speaker 1: get your thoughts on some of these additions and what
- 6:37Speaker 1: you make of them and kind of how all these
- 6:39Speaker 1: pieces fit together. Starting with with Tucker Derees. Obviously, he's
- 6:42Speaker 1: kind of the name that a lot of people are
- 6:44Speaker 1: focused on. The highest rated player in terms of transfer,
- 6:48Speaker 1: Porter rankings, although we've kind of learned maybe not to
- 6:50Speaker 1: get too caught up in that after the experience of
- 6:52Speaker 1: last year. A lot of these guys maybe not from
- 6:56Speaker 1: high major programs really besides Degrees, I don't think any
- 6:59Speaker 1: of them have high major experience coming into the Indiana program.
- 7:02Speaker 1: But I think people are a lot more optimistic going
- 7:05Speaker 1: into next season given the regime change and just how
- 7:08Speaker 1: these pieces may fit together compared to last season. But
- 7:11Speaker 1: Devrees fair to call him that maybe the centerpiece of
- 7:15Speaker 1: what's going to be going on with Indiana basketball next season.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I definitely think he's going to be one of the
- 7:21Speaker 2: center pieces, him and Lamar Wilkerson, especially on the offensive end.
- 7:26Speaker 2: And I think when you think of Tucker Dvrees, everybody
- 7:29Speaker 2: you know, it's the coach's son. Everybody expected him to
- 7:32Speaker 2: come to IU, and I think you know rightfully so,
- 7:35Speaker 2: but he's been a little bit under undervalued. I think
- 7:39Speaker 2: in this transfer portal. Hall only played in eight games
- 7:42Speaker 2: at West Virginia, but when he did play, he was
- 7:45Speaker 2: one of the better shooters in the nation, as he
- 7:47Speaker 2: always has been. Forty seven percent on fifty five attempts
- 7:51Speaker 2: in his eight games at West Virginia, and then even
- 7:53Speaker 2: dating back to his time at Drake, he knows the
- 7:56Speaker 2: Devres system obviously very well. He's willing defensively and he's
- 8:02Speaker 2: a guy who can do multiple things well in the
- 8:04Speaker 2: offensive end. A good rebounder at his size, and I
- 8:07Speaker 2: think a lot of people forget that he's six', seven,
- 8:10Speaker 2: Right So, indiana you look at their height on the
- 8:13Speaker 2: wing and rebounding. Ability that's definitely in length on the.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Wing that's definitely something that is improving on this roster
- 8:20Speaker 2: can in terms of based on the years prior that
- 8:26Speaker 2: we've seen Under Archie miller And Mike. Woodson So Tucker,
- 8:29Speaker 2: devrees it definitely starts with, Him but in, TOTALITY i
- 8:34Speaker 2: think the group That Darren DeVries has brought, in you're
- 8:38Speaker 2: seeing a plan and you're seeing a trend of the
- 8:43Speaker 2: kind of players that he's bringing, in And Tucker devrees
- 8:47Speaker 2: maybe an anomaly because he's his.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Son, yeah you're. Right it's almost like any other time
- 8:55Speaker 1: there'd be like a huge celebration right when a player
- 8:57Speaker 1: of this caliber, Committed but it was, like you, know
- 8:59Speaker 1: HE'S i was there for the press conference and he
- 9:02Speaker 1: just walks into the press conference with HIS iu hoodie.
- 9:04Speaker 1: On SO i was, like all, right he's never actually
- 9:07Speaker 1: come out and said anything on social media that he's
- 9:09Speaker 1: committed or, anything but it just assumed that he's coming.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Along what about his offensive? Game maybe you talked about the.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Shooting is there anything maybe that you've seen of him
- 9:20Speaker 1: that that maybe's a little bit underrated OUT i was
- 9:22Speaker 1: looking at his assist. Numbers he actually seems to be
- 9:24Speaker 1: a pretty willing pastor and, distributor to which a guy
- 9:28Speaker 1: that scores that, much particularly at the level he he,
- 9:31Speaker 1: does you don't necessarily see the same assist numbers out
- 9:33Speaker 1: of guys like.
- 9:34Speaker 2: That With West virginia last, season he definitely served more
- 9:40Speaker 2: as a primary spot up. GUY i, mean he only
- 9:42Speaker 2: attempted thirty two's and he attempted fifty five threes in
- 9:47Speaker 2: those eight, games and he was only thirty percent on those.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Two so him getting around the, BASKET i think at
- 9:54Speaker 2: the high major level it's not necessarily an issue for,
- 9:57Speaker 2: him but it's not a. Strength BUT i do think
- 10:00Speaker 2: you mentioned his. Passing he is a willing passer and
- 10:04Speaker 2: he makes good decision decisions. Too AND i also think
- 10:07Speaker 2: that has to go with playing under his dad and his.
- 10:10Speaker 2: System that is obviously heavily predicated on ball, movement, passing,
- 10:16Speaker 2: spacing opening up the. Floor but for, Me, alex if
- 10:20Speaker 2: you watch his tape as a, shooter his off ball
- 10:23Speaker 2: movement is really. Impressive he knows how to get, open
- 10:27Speaker 2: and he knows how to get to his spots on the,
- 10:29Speaker 2: perimeter and it also helps that he can hit shots
- 10:31Speaker 2: from twenty five plus feet.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Out so, yeah you watch some of those clips From
- 10:34Speaker 1: battle For, atlantis and he was. Right he was way
- 10:37Speaker 1: beyond the. Line it wasn't even Was it wasn't like
- 10:39Speaker 1: he was a foot or two. Pie he was six
- 10:41Speaker 1: or seven feet and he was making the shots.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Effortlessly and he's got the green light. TOO i, mean
- 10:45Speaker 2: if he's, open they want him to shoot it no
- 10:48Speaker 2: matter where he.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Is So Connor enwright was, ACTUALLY i guess the first
- 10:52Speaker 1: real commitment among this group coming over From De. Paul
- 10:55Speaker 1: but obviously the tie in there is he played two
- 10:57Speaker 1: seasons for the Reason, drake he's a guy maybe not
- 11:00Speaker 1: getting as much fanfare as as some of the other,
- 11:02Speaker 1: names but you look at what he's able to do
- 11:06Speaker 1: from a defensive, standpoint is assist straight was really good last.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Season he he and Maybe i'm. WRONG i only watched
- 11:15Speaker 1: him on, film BUT i get the feeling that he's
- 11:17Speaker 1: gonna be one of those guys in The Big ten
- 11:19Speaker 1: That indiana fans are gonna love having on their team
- 11:21Speaker 1: and that other teams are gonna hate. Him like some
- 11:23Speaker 1: of the players that over the years that have played
- 11:26Speaker 1: For wisconsin THAT i Know indiana fans, like when is
- 11:28Speaker 1: it like A ben like A Ben? Brust remember? HIM
- 11:30Speaker 1: i don't know if you maybe a little bit before
- 11:32Speaker 1: your time played For wisconsin FOR i, think, Yeah, Brad Brad,
- 11:35Speaker 1: davis those kind of guys where it was like they
- 11:40Speaker 1: were just a pest at all times out, there AND
- 11:42Speaker 1: i get the feeling that that's kind of the player
- 11:44Speaker 1: that he's gonna be For.
- 11:45Speaker 2: INDIANA i, mean he's kind of he's like a little junkyard.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Dog he's six,' two just like one hundred and eighty,
- 11:51Speaker 2: five pounds but he really gets after it on the,
- 11:54Speaker 2: defensive end AND then i think he also provides something
- 11:58Speaker 2: on the. Offensive, END right i think a lot of
- 12:01Speaker 2: people when you have guys that come off, the bench
- 12:04Speaker 2: you need guys that can do multiple, things WELL and
- 12:07Speaker 2: I Think connor enright is one of. Those guys his.
- 12:10Speaker 2: ASSIST rate, i mean he only played in twenty three
- 12:12Speaker 2: games he had an Injury with DePaul, last year but
- 12:15Speaker 2: it was sixteenth in, the. COUNTRY right, i mean that's
- 12:18Speaker 2: pretty impressive for a guy who's not very, you know high,
- 12:22Speaker 2: ball usage a guy who's not gonna be a scoring threat.
- 12:27Speaker 2: As much and then he also is capable as an.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Outside shooter, but defensively he will get in. Your grill
- 12:35Speaker 2: he loves to take charges and that's SOMETHING that I can,
- 12:39Speaker 2: I mean i think both of us Know that indiana
- 12:41Speaker 2: fans are gonna love watching him get down in a
- 12:45Speaker 2: defensive stance and make some plays and wreck. Some HAVOC
- 12:48Speaker 2: and i think that couple's really well with the other
- 12:51Speaker 2: guards that they've, brought in In Particular, taton CONNORWAY who
- 12:55Speaker 2: i thought was one of the best defensive guards available
- 12:58Speaker 2: in the transfer portal this seaar And so enwright as
- 13:01Speaker 2: a guy who's not going to be, a starter but
- 13:03Speaker 2: maybe you have them, playing sixteen eighteen to twenty minutes,
- 13:07Speaker 2: a game can fill in when needed for foul trouble
- 13:10Speaker 2: and stuff. Like that he'll play, a role and he'll fill,
- 13:13Speaker 2: the role and he knows. His ROLE and i think
- 13:15Speaker 2: that's really important to have coming off. The bench.
- 13:19Speaker 1: For Sure red BAILEY was, i think kind of going
- 13:21Speaker 1: in chronological order here to. The Guy red bailey was
- 13:24Speaker 1: the next, next commitment and, HE too i think has
- 13:28Speaker 1: maybe flown a little bit under. The radar just, you
- 13:31Speaker 1: know he was an outstanding player last Season. At davidson
- 13:35Speaker 1: he Was An All all League, first Player Our all
- 13:39Speaker 1: league first. Team player the one thing that you know
- 13:43Speaker 1: he stands out about him he can step out a
- 13:45Speaker 1: little bit at. His size it's a little. Bit unique
- 13:49Speaker 1: rebounding numbers not really a strength of his and that's
- 13:53Speaker 1: that's kind of ONE thing i want to bring up
- 13:55Speaker 1: and maybe talk a little bit about later in terms
- 13:57Speaker 1: of what they need maybe going forward to. The ROSTER
- 14:00Speaker 1: but i think he can play, some five play some four.
- 14:04Speaker 1: As well what stood Out About read bailey just from
- 14:08Speaker 1: watching his film.
- 14:09Speaker 2: HIS passing i think he's one of the best passing
- 14:12Speaker 2: big men in. The. COUNTRY really i think some of
- 14:15Speaker 2: the angles that he finds and at, six ten he
- 14:20Speaker 2: doesn't play like he's, six' ten which i think that's
- 14:23Speaker 2: kind of what you're hitting at with. The REBOUNDING stuff
- 14:26Speaker 2: but i don't think that's necessarily going to be a
- 14:28Speaker 2: problem because he can, space the floor because he can,
- 14:32Speaker 2: pass so well and he was also really good at cutting.
- 14:36Speaker 2: OFF the, ball i mean this is a guy that
- 14:39Speaker 2: knows how to get, into THE lane and i don't
- 14:41Speaker 2: want to compare him to A Guy like molique reneu
- 14:44Speaker 2: when he does get around the basket, with his footwork
- 14:48Speaker 2: but he was pretty solid against a ten competition around
- 14:52Speaker 2: the basket. With his footwork he definitely struggled with the
- 14:55Speaker 2: more physically imposing big men that he faced at especially,
- 15:00Speaker 2: those you know. Really good athletes But his passing alex.
- 15:05Speaker 2: WAS just, outstanding i mean he is assist rate twenty
- 15:08Speaker 2: five point three for a six ten to two hundred
- 15:11Speaker 2: and thirty pounds. Center or forward that was one hundred
- 15:14Speaker 2: and eighty first in the country's sixth best assist rate
- 15:17Speaker 2: in the CONFERENCE in the a ten as a six,
- 15:20Speaker 2: to ten guy doesn't matter what conference you're in or
- 15:23Speaker 2: what team. You're playing for that's. Really Really impressive and
- 15:26Speaker 2: davidson the offense really. Ran through him that's not going
- 15:30Speaker 2: to be The. Case at indiana so if he can
- 15:33Speaker 2: play more of, an, off ball spacing cutting a passing
- 15:38Speaker 2: role as a six, to ten guy he's going to,
- 15:41Speaker 2: be REALLY valuable but i am really curious To See
- 15:45Speaker 2: how darren devrees uses him because he's kind he's kind
- 15:49Speaker 2: of in a unicorn at his position and A player
- 15:53Speaker 2: that i'm not sure how well He fits in davrez's
- 15:59Speaker 2: system based on, of years prior because he likes to,
- 16:02Speaker 2: have these athletic big rim runners who, can set screens
- 16:07Speaker 2: facilitate of, stuff, like that defend, protect the Rim and
- 16:11Speaker 2: then i'm immediately thinking About Like a Darnell brody At
- 16:15Speaker 2: Drake Or Amari hansbury Amoni Hansbury at west. Virginia last
- 16:21Speaker 2: season rebailly definitely is not that, kind of player but
- 16:24Speaker 2: he's going to be able to provide a lot on.
- 16:27Speaker 2: The offensive end and another thing. His foul rate he
- 16:31Speaker 2: knows how, to get fouled and he's a good free
- 16:33Speaker 2: throw shooter seventy seven percent on two hundred and twenty six.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Attempts last year his foul rate was eighth BEST In.
- 16:40Speaker 2: The a ten. That's pretty impressive and a guy who
- 16:43Speaker 2: knows how to get to his spots and be effective.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Around The rim so.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I've been thinking a lot lately just about How many players,
- 16:50Speaker 1: indiana ULTIMATELY needs because i know a lot of, people,
- 16:53Speaker 1: are saying well you can have. Fifteen, SCHOLARSHIP players now
- 16:55Speaker 1: i think the idea of having fifteen players on a
- 16:58Speaker 1: college basketball team that atually expect to play is in
- 17:02Speaker 1: an era of player movement, THAT we're in i think
- 17:04Speaker 1: is a ridiculous idea because you're going to have immediately
- 17:08Speaker 1: four or five guys who are disgruntled from day one
- 17:11Speaker 1: that aren't getting a chance to. Play AT all and
- 17:12Speaker 1: i think you can take a couple of guys maybe
- 17:14Speaker 1: at the end, of your bench with the idea that
- 17:16Speaker 1: they're going to be development pieces for the end or.
- 17:19Speaker 1: For the future, BUT you know i would say the
- 17:24Speaker 1: best teams, in college, basketball you know play eight. Nine
- 17:26Speaker 1: guys regularly. That's your rotation indiana has already up to
- 17:29Speaker 1: eight scholarship players when You Figure, In Trin sicily so
- 17:32Speaker 1: i'm thinking two or three more guys that. They probably
- 17:36Speaker 1: need is you would you agree with that in terms
- 17:38Speaker 1: of the profile of what they? Need, MOVING forward obviously
- 17:41Speaker 1: i think they need a player who's at least six',
- 17:43Speaker 1: ten that you know can. Provide some rim protection not
- 17:46Speaker 1: saying it it has. To be a starter i'm not
- 17:48Speaker 1: saying it's actually someone has to play. Twenty twenty five
- 17:50Speaker 1: minutes but there are gonna Be nights in the big
- 17:51Speaker 1: ten where you're going up against the front line where
- 17:54Speaker 1: you have somebody that you need some physicality to throw
- 17:56Speaker 1: in there. And try to stop so that to me is.
- 18:01Speaker 1: The biggest clearing need just your thoughts on just the
- 18:04Speaker 1: overall number of players Maybe that you, expect india to
- 18:07Speaker 1: have and what the. NEEDS are Moving forward i.
- 18:11Speaker 2: STILL i'm with you i think around twelve to thirteen
- 18:15Speaker 2: scholarship guys is, still the right number because then you
- 18:19Speaker 2: run into this problem, where you're you know, you're promising
- 18:22Speaker 2: guys' money and you're promising guys things in the portal
- 18:27Speaker 2: just for them, to, be the thirteenth. Fourteenth AND fifteenth
- 18:30Speaker 2: guys and i think that that just leaves a. LOT
- 18:32Speaker 2: up people unhappy i think could create some weird locker.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Room dynamics and problems so if you can, find like
- 18:39Speaker 2: ten guys nine ten guys that you, feel really good
- 18:42Speaker 2: about these, are going, to be you know the central.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Pieces of our rotation we feel good about them playing.
- 18:49Speaker 2: In any given game and then, maybe you have one,
- 18:52Speaker 2: two or three projects maybe a, guy you red shirt
- 18:57Speaker 2: a freshman coming in who has a little bit of
- 18:59Speaker 2: work to do before they. SEE high major basketball i
- 19:03Speaker 2: think that's kind of the good direction when it, comes
- 19:06Speaker 2: TO roster building and i do think That's the direction
- 19:10Speaker 2: that darren. Devrees is going in and you mentioned in terms,
- 19:13Speaker 2: OF what they need i do think it'll be around,
- 19:17Speaker 2: two three. More PLAYERS maybe four and i think the
- 19:21Speaker 2: biggest glaring weakness on the roster as of now is,
- 19:25Speaker 2: certainly the front court athleticism on the. Wing and rim
- 19:30Speaker 2: protection they don't really have that, physical enforcer Down Low and,
- 19:35Speaker 2: in darren devreeze's system they're not going to be the
- 19:38Speaker 2: focal point of the offense or the. Go to usage
- 19:43Speaker 2: guy he just needs somebody who, can run the, floor
- 19:46Speaker 2: protect the rim, be a lob threat. And BE physically
- 19:50Speaker 2: imposing and i, think they'll be okay and probably a.
- 19:53Speaker 2: COUPLE of, those guys i mean they only have one
- 19:56Speaker 2: forward on the roster in, my opinion Right. Now. AND
- 19:59Speaker 2: that's bailey.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Yeah i mean they've got one player. TALLER than six, seven,
- 20:03Speaker 1: i don't. Know yeah and. HEIGHTS heights, Not everything i
- 20:06Speaker 1: mean hansbury played a Ton Last. YEAR at west virginia i,
- 20:08Speaker 1: Think He's six eight so i'm not saying the player
- 20:11Speaker 1: has to be six, eleven or six ten and they
- 20:12Speaker 1: could be Six eight if, they're if they're good they're
- 20:15Speaker 1: long and they play taller than then you know they're they're,
- 20:18Speaker 1: actually hot their height or, they rebound the. BALL they
- 20:20Speaker 1: block shots, i THINK that's fine but i agree with
- 20:23Speaker 1: you that they need someone who can provide some, resistance
- 20:27Speaker 1: In the rim because i'm Not sure against the michigan,
- 20:29Speaker 1: states of, the world you know produce maybe A. LITTLE
- 20:31Speaker 1: bit different michigan i don't know how you can survive
- 20:35Speaker 1: without having some type of. Presence at the rim.
- 20:39Speaker 2: You can't Definitely not. IN the big ten I MEAN
- 20:42Speaker 2: you even and i think this is A Part where
- 20:46Speaker 2: maybe mike woodson and they they maybe had put an
- 20:51Speaker 2: over emphasis on it. IN the front court i think
- 20:54Speaker 2: we all we, all AGREE with that and I Do
- 20:57Speaker 2: worry that darren deriez maybe is putting an. Under emphasis on.
- 21:01Speaker 2: It but we'll see we don't know what the roster
- 21:04Speaker 2: is going to. Pan OUT to be but i think
- 21:06Speaker 2: if you can just find a guy that's going to,
- 21:08Speaker 2: do the dirty, work they'll set, screens they'll rebound well
- 21:13Speaker 2: they can, push the ball, quickly be, an outlet good,
- 21:16Speaker 2: conditioning run the, floor protect the rim and the be
- 21:20Speaker 2: a loab threat and solid in. THE pick and roll
- 21:23Speaker 2: i think they're going. To BE just fine and i
- 21:25Speaker 2: think if you can find a guy that you feel
- 21:27Speaker 2: comfortable pairing With the guards that, indiana has brought in
- 21:32Speaker 2: it could be. A really good fit and there are
- 21:34Speaker 2: plenty of those types. OF players, out there i mean
- 21:37Speaker 2: that's kind of the modern big man. In college basketball
- 21:41Speaker 2: nowadays but then You Also have the reed bailey post
- 21:45Speaker 2: player who can score in the post right and. Be
- 21:48Speaker 2: AN offensive threat so i think if you can, couple
- 21:50Speaker 2: those two together then you're kind of. Cooking, SOMETHING down low.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Yeah i mean it's going To be adjustment for Indiana
- 21:57Speaker 1: Fans going From chase shackson To is To Khalil Ware
- 22:01Speaker 1: to umar. BOLLO welik were new i don't think you're
- 22:04Speaker 1: gonna have a player that obviously is has that much,
- 22:07Speaker 1: of A role offensively but i do think they are
- 22:11Speaker 1: gonna find some type of post presence just in terms
- 22:14Speaker 1: of rebounding and defense that they can. Put On this
- 22:16Speaker 1: roster lamar wilkerson OBVIOUSLY the highest profile i guess recruitment
- 22:21Speaker 1: of this portal Cycle, so far for indiana just because
- 22:25Speaker 1: we Had. The the visit indiana then we Had the
- 22:28Speaker 1: trip To kentucky with with lamar out on the on
- 22:32Speaker 1: the Worst Track, with with, mark pope you know, in
- 22:34Speaker 1: the winner circle and ye what a. What a weird.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Scenario that was hilarious.
- 22:43Speaker 1: It was just funny to see how it was basically
- 22:45Speaker 1: no Fanfare with, for his indiana visit like it was.
- 22:47Speaker 1: All under the Radar and then in kentucky they have
- 22:50Speaker 1: him Out in public at keeneland and they're taking. Pictures
- 22:53Speaker 1: just You know i'm. Sure lamar it was it. Was
- 22:57Speaker 1: fun for him but and then he goes home FOR
- 22:59Speaker 1: a Days and i think indiana FANS were unsure what.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I what to, Expect Any you know darren devrees flies
- 23:05Speaker 1: down there and talks to him. And get THE commitment
- 23:09Speaker 1: that was i think just A big moment for debrees
- 23:13Speaker 1: in this portal cycle to show that he could Win, A,
- 23:15Speaker 1: Recruitment against Kentucky AUBURN ole miss and i think when
- 23:20Speaker 1: you're getting a player that those are the. Schools That
- 23:23Speaker 1: want him you're you're you're going. In. The right waters
- 23:26Speaker 1: right THEY'LL look at the sec the, last couple of
- 23:30Speaker 1: years what they've done in college basketball compared. TO the
- 23:32Speaker 1: big ten i mean the fact that they're able to
- 23:34Speaker 1: land a player that THOSE schools wanted to i think
- 23:36Speaker 1: says a lot about what kind of Player They're. Getting.
- 23:38Speaker 1: WITH labar wilkerson.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Yeah i MEAN you Look At, i, mean walter clayton
- 23:43Speaker 2: right they you see what HE Did In the ncaa
- 23:46Speaker 2: tournament florida. Winning the national Title, he was at iona
- 23:51Speaker 2: right for a couple of Years. Before going to florida
- 23:54Speaker 2: there's a certain Kind of Profile Chas lanier from North,
- 23:58Speaker 2: florida Going to tennessee even dalton connect. The year before that.
- 24:03Speaker 2: This is really good this is. A really good Sign
- 24:05Speaker 2: i think that indiana. Beat out those schools but certainly
- 24:09Speaker 2: there are no guarantees when IT. Comes to the porl
- 24:11Speaker 2: you don't know what a guy is going to be
- 24:12Speaker 2: able to produce when they get to, a high major
- 24:15Speaker 2: level especially Coming Up from. A sam houston state but
- 24:18Speaker 2: In The, CASE of lamar wilkerson i do think that
- 24:22Speaker 2: he's going to translate because this kid is about as
- 24:25Speaker 2: pure as it gets as a. SCORE in the country
- 24:28Speaker 2: i think he was thirteenth nationally in points per game
- 24:31Speaker 2: and in terms of shooting the basketball on two hundred.
- 24:35Speaker 2: And twenty six attempts he shot forty three percent. FROM
- 24:39Speaker 2: beyond the yard i mean that is a big. Breath
- 24:42Speaker 2: of fresh air.
- 24:43Speaker 1: And everyone he played new he was going. To be
- 24:45Speaker 1: shooting right. Everyone was playing new everyone he played new
- 24:48Speaker 1: he was going.
- 24:49Speaker 2: To be shooting exactly and still he found a. Way
- 24:52Speaker 2: to get open he found a way. To get his
- 24:54Speaker 2: shots and then he also shot fifty, Percent on twos
- 24:57Speaker 2: right so he's comfortable, getting to the lane. Getting around
- 25:00Speaker 2: the rim he's, fine as a facilitator but. HE'S definitely
- 25:04Speaker 2: score first i do think there's work for him to
- 25:07Speaker 2: be done, on THE defensive end but i think a
- 25:09Speaker 2: lot of people also forget, he's, six foot five right this.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Is a, big GUARD he's big and i think that
- 25:16Speaker 2: that trends positively when it comes to the defensive. Side
- 25:20Speaker 2: of the ball. GOOD free throw shooter i would like
- 25:23Speaker 2: for him to get to the foul line. A little
- 25:24Speaker 2: bit more just free throw rate was just. Twenty one
- 25:27Speaker 2: point eight he did only attempt, ninety seven free throws
- 25:31Speaker 2: but did shoot eighty. THREE percent on them i think
- 25:33Speaker 2: that he will get to the Line more, in the
- 25:36Speaker 2: big ten just because it's going to he's gonna have
- 25:38Speaker 2: a harder time getting to the rim and getting his shot.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Off without getting fouled but when you Can, beat out
- 25:44Speaker 2: of kentucky you Can beat out at auburn For A,
- 25:47Speaker 2: PLAYER like lamar wilkerson i think THAT'S really impressive and
- 25:51Speaker 2: i think IT also stood out i. THINK you listened
- 25:53Speaker 2: to i think it was in the interview that He
- 25:56Speaker 2: did with the field of sixty eight Where He said
- 25:59Speaker 2: that darren devrees flew down there to see, him before
- 26:06Speaker 2: he committed to basically make a final pitch or ploy
- 26:10Speaker 2: to get HIM. To COME to iu and i think
- 26:13Speaker 2: that's always really nice to see in a really good sign,
- 26:17Speaker 2: on the recruiting trail especially so early. ON in His
- 26:21Speaker 2: tenure i think devrees is putting IN the work and
- 26:25Speaker 2: i think they've kind of identified a certain archetype of.
- 26:29Speaker 2: THE player, they want i mean you're. Looking at these
- 26:31Speaker 2: guys all of them have this kind of chip. On
- 26:35Speaker 2: their shoulder mentality THREE of, them are juco guys One Of,
- 26:39Speaker 2: them Being Lamar wilkerson of jason drake who committed the
- 26:44Speaker 2: other day have SPENT, a year At Juco and Then Josi,
- 26:47Speaker 2: miles from north florida who we haven't talked, about yet AS. Well,
- 26:52Speaker 2: WAS at juco so i mean this is things are
- 26:56Speaker 2: trending in a positive direction with the. Recruiting side of
- 26:59Speaker 2: things it's always really nice to hear when you have
- 27:01Speaker 2: a head coach that goes out of their way to
- 27:04Speaker 2: prioritize a player and makes them feel comfortable and like
- 27:08Speaker 2: they're making a good decision in. Coming TO your School
- 27:12Speaker 2: And i think lamar wilkerson is going to be a
- 27:14Speaker 2: HOME run player. For. IU next year.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Yeah i think that also resonated with the fan base
- 27:20Speaker 1: because it kind of seemed like the opposite of something
- 27:22Speaker 1: that the previous head coach would have done in terms
- 27:25Speaker 1: of going down. TO close, the deal i mean there
- 27:27Speaker 1: was obviously a lot Said And written about mike woodson
- 27:30Speaker 1: and kind of, his Approach to recruiting whereas derees seems
- 27:34Speaker 1: to be grinding it out on a day to day
- 27:36Speaker 1: basis as he. Builds OUT this roster so i think
- 27:38Speaker 1: that Excited a. LOT of indiana fans a couple more guys.
- 27:41Speaker 1: HERE to talk about i think going In Chronological order
- 27:44Speaker 1: to josiah. Miles was the next but. WE had a
- 27:47Speaker 1: situation i think it was what last was maybe we
- 27:49Speaker 1: could go today where we had a commitment at, nine
- 27:51Speaker 1: to twenty pm and then we had another one at
- 27:53Speaker 1: eleven twenty, Eight pm at night so it was it
- 27:57Speaker 1: was kind of succession two in A row There With.
- 27:59Speaker 1: Miles and tayton connor wait what just talking about? Both
- 28:02Speaker 1: of those guys what Do you Like? About miles and conorway.
- 28:06Speaker 2: We, can START with connorway because, I. LOVE that, kid
- 28:10Speaker 2: alex i mean if, you WATCH his, tape he i
- 28:13Speaker 2: mean he is by far MY favorite edition for iu.
- 28:17Speaker 2: In the transfer portal We already talked, about Connor enright
- 28:22Speaker 2: defensively taking conorway was probably the best defensive guard available,
- 28:27Speaker 2: in the transfer Portal at least. When indiana got, him
- 28:31Speaker 2: in my opinion he, tastes takes some risk but at
- 28:34Speaker 2: six foot three hundred, and eighty six pounds He Was
- 28:37Speaker 2: a sun Belt. Player of the year he was third in.
- 28:39Speaker 2: The nation in steels, he's got, long arms he's, aggressive
- 28:44Speaker 2: and then offensively he's got, an excellent quick burst great,
- 28:49Speaker 2: north and south speed. He can get downhill he's not
- 28:53Speaker 2: the best spot up, shooter IN the world but i
- 28:56Speaker 2: you's not going to need him to be with the
- 28:58Speaker 2: type of. Player they've added around if you can just
- 29:00Speaker 2: get connorway into the lane and he, can make good
- 29:04Speaker 2: choices which. He did last year he's going to be
- 29:07Speaker 2: a really fun player for. These guys to play around
- 29:10Speaker 2: four point, eight assists per game he only turned it
- 29:13Speaker 2: over under, three times a game and they were also
- 29:16Speaker 2: fifty eight percent on twos for a skinny. Six y three.
- 29:20Speaker 2: GUARD that's, really impressive i mean you watch. Some of
- 29:23Speaker 2: his tape the way he's able to find some of
- 29:25Speaker 2: these angles around the basket and hang in the air
- 29:29Speaker 2: and lay something tough off the glass or. Make a tough,
- 29:33Speaker 2: pass IT'S really impressive and i think those kind of
- 29:37Speaker 2: things translate to high major play If You're the sun belt, player,
- 29:42Speaker 2: OF the YEAR right i mean I covered the sun
- 29:45Speaker 2: Belt player of the year. From The previous year Terrence
- 29:48Speaker 2: edwards junior at. Louisville this past Season He was at.
- 29:52Speaker 2: James madison before coming certainly there were, limitations to his
- 29:56Speaker 2: game but he Was a third, team all acc guy
- 29:59Speaker 2: second leading score, or on The, ROSTER and by march i,
- 30:02Speaker 2: mean he Was cookie especially when hepburn was kind of
- 30:05Speaker 2: dealing with a groin issue and he took over some of.
- 30:08Speaker 2: The point guard duties so that Is, A REALLY good
- 30:10Speaker 2: league and i think you Have a guy in connorway
- 30:13Speaker 2: who is the head. Of THE snake defensively if I
- 30:17Speaker 2: Know that's something mike woodson, will say a lot but
- 30:20Speaker 2: he will get after it and then he can. Also
- 30:22Speaker 2: RUN the show and i think if you, also watch
- 30:24Speaker 2: his tape you'll see a guy who plays with, a
- 30:26Speaker 2: lot of fire, a lot of passion and. He WANTS
- 30:30Speaker 2: to win and i think to be a Point Guard
- 30:32Speaker 2: in the big ten you.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Have, To have that yeah and you saw what a
- 30:37Speaker 1: player who can control the game defensively could Do last
- 30:40Speaker 1: season At Louisville when when. Katy HEPBURN came over so
- 30:44Speaker 1: i think does that have a little bit to do
- 30:46Speaker 1: with why you're Excited in, TERMS of connorway's.
- 30:48Speaker 2: IMPACT i THINK so i think i. Don't think he
- 30:52Speaker 2: may he may not have the Exact same production that
- 30:54Speaker 2: chuck he had defense that'd.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Be, hard to do yeah fifteen player in, all of
- 30:58Speaker 1: college basketball you had. That type of production and Then
- 31:01Speaker 1: you're talking about indiana, as a you know a exact,
- 31:03Speaker 1: team or, beyond team.
- 31:05Speaker 2: So Exactly but acc Defensive, player of the year a
- 31:09Speaker 2: guy who some players they just have, a, Knack for
- 31:12Speaker 2: it right they just have a really good, FEEL for,
- 31:14Speaker 2: the game i think especially you see in some, point
- 31:17Speaker 2: guards they do, and his Aggressiveness Defensively this is. Connorway
- 31:22Speaker 2: i'm talking about it can put him in some, difficult
- 31:25Speaker 2: spots at times but he loves a good pick pocket
- 31:30Speaker 2: and he's just so handsy and aggressive and he plays.
- 31:33Speaker 2: All the correct angles he's just really. Fun TO watch
- 31:37Speaker 2: defend and i think you watch a GUY like at
- 31:39Speaker 2: Least I did in, chucky heppern run, around defend multiple
- 31:43Speaker 2: positions be, so Aggressive And active and pat kelcey basically
- 31:48Speaker 2: let him roam free and just wreck havoc. AND it,
- 31:51Speaker 2: Worked right i mean louisville is a top thirty defensive,
- 31:53Speaker 2: team in The nation and if connorway has anywhere close
- 31:57Speaker 2: to that, kind of impact defensively it's going to be.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Really fun To Watch.
- 32:01Speaker 1: WHAT about josiah miles i, like him a lot just
- 32:04Speaker 1: from the. Potential that he HAS it's a fifteen i
- 32:08Speaker 1: think point per game Score Last, year in north florida
- 32:10Speaker 1: and also the fact that he has. Multiple years of
- 32:12Speaker 1: eligibility that's not something that many of these guys that.
- 32:15Speaker 1: They've PICKED up have so i think he can be
- 32:17Speaker 1: a guy that whether he starts or comes off, the
- 32:19Speaker 1: bench next season he's a guy you. HAVE for two
- 32:21Speaker 1: years i. THINK that's, important too.
- 32:23Speaker 2: I mean he took two hundred and Twenty Four. Threes
- 32:27Speaker 2: At North, florida IN north florida they i believe they
- 32:31Speaker 2: shot the highest volume. Right in the country so he's
- 32:37Speaker 2: obviously not going to shoot over two hundred Threes next
- 32:40Speaker 2: season at indiana with THE OTHER players, That i u
- 32:43Speaker 2: has but he was seventy seven percentile. And spot up
- 32:47Speaker 2: shooting and then you also. Look at his, frame he's,
- 32:49Speaker 2: pretty big six six. Two hundred five pounds you mentioned
- 32:53Speaker 2: that he has multiple. Years of eligibility left he had
- 32:56Speaker 2: a great improvement from his freshman To Sophomore year at
- 33:02Speaker 2: north florida nine point seven point average increase and a
- 33:09Speaker 2: lot of growth in. That year for HIM but the
- 33:12Speaker 2: thing i like most of all about him is. He's
- 33:15Speaker 2: a tenacious rebounder six point eight rebounds a game that
- 33:19Speaker 2: was second On The, team at north florida and at
- 33:22Speaker 2: his size, at six foot. Six that's really impressive and
- 33:26Speaker 2: if you can find a roll Off The bench for
- 33:28Speaker 2: josy miles as a knockdown three point shooter with some size.
- 33:33Speaker 2: And a good rebounder he's going to be hard to,
- 33:36Speaker 2: keep off the floor and he's going. TO find playing
- 33:39Speaker 2: time i think. His upside is there he's definitely got
- 33:42Speaker 2: room to improve. As a ball handler. The ball skills stuff,
- 33:46Speaker 2: HE'S not quite there i think at the high major
- 33:49Speaker 2: level in terms. Of playmaking for himself but he's not
- 33:52Speaker 2: going to have, to, BE next, year right i mean
- 33:54Speaker 2: he's got a, couple of years left so there's time
- 33:58Speaker 2: for him to figure these things out in A Conference.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Like the big ten and then also you talk about, the,
- 34:04Speaker 2: straight line drives right him just, cutting to, the basket
- 34:07Speaker 2: being physical being able to put the ball, down on
- 34:10Speaker 2: the floor and making aggressive. Play at the rim he.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Certainly can do that fifty five point six percent on
- 34:16Speaker 2: twos and the three. Point volume stands out you may
- 34:22Speaker 2: look at his, percentage, and you see okay he. Shot thirty,
- 34:24Speaker 2: three percent you know if we're if we WANT a
- 34:26Speaker 2: three and d guy, who's six foot six we could
- 34:29Speaker 2: do a little. Bit BETTER than that but i think
- 34:32Speaker 2: on two hundred and twenty four attempts and a lot of,
- 34:35Speaker 2: those coming you, know off the dribble which he's not
- 34:39Speaker 2: going to have As many opportunities. At indiana next season
- 34:44Speaker 2: it's definitely a good trajectory for. HIM to be on
- 34:48Speaker 2: i hate calling. GUYS like him projects i, think that's
- 34:52Speaker 2: an overstatement but out Of the guys that, indiana has
- 34:56Speaker 2: brought in he certainly is the biggest project of them
- 35:01Speaker 2: all because they're going to have to work with. Them
- 35:03Speaker 2: on some things but there's plenty of potential and room
- 35:08Speaker 2: for growth because he's not just going to be. There for.
- 35:10Speaker 2: ONE year, that's right.
- 35:13Speaker 1: I mean a guy That scores, fifteen at division one
- 35:16Speaker 1: if that's kind of your your guy that you have
- 35:18Speaker 1: to work, with a little bit that's that's a pretty good.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Starting place to have the, other Thing about him and
- 35:23Speaker 1: i've talked to him and right in the next last
- 35:26Speaker 1: guy we're Going To. Talk about jason drake all, three
- 35:29Speaker 1: of those guys they genuinely seem excited and bought into
- 35:34Speaker 1: the idea of the team concept, just from you know
- 35:38Speaker 1: having a conversation with them And kind of. What derais
- 35:40Speaker 1: is building they want to be part of a team
- 35:43Speaker 1: that shares the, ball and, you know plays together and
- 35:46Speaker 1: they all kind OF said THAT when i when. I
- 35:48Speaker 1: spoke to him so that's the other, thing about, HIM
- 35:50Speaker 1: is you know i don't think he's going to average Fifteen.
- 35:52Speaker 1: A game in indiana but if he can be a
- 35:54Speaker 1: guy coming off the, bench that, gives you you know
- 35:56Speaker 1: six or seven points and has an occasional game, where
- 35:59Speaker 1: he you know he gets hot and hit, THREE or
- 36:00Speaker 1: four three's i think that's what you want. Out of
- 36:02Speaker 1: the him you can't, ever have enough offense. Particularly off the,
- 36:05Speaker 1: bench and who knows maybe he's a guy that. Does
- 36:08Speaker 1: start some. Games we don't know we got to see how.
- 36:09Speaker 1: This all pans out but HE'S a guy that i
- 36:12Speaker 1: think has.
- 36:12Speaker 2: A TON of potential and i think he's another guy
- 36:16Speaker 2: when you talk about the kind of, chip on, their
- 36:18Speaker 2: shoulder blue collar lunch pale type player that is comfortable being.
- 36:26Speaker 2: PUT in a role i think that is an underrated
- 36:31Speaker 2: the aspect when it comes to modern day college basketball
- 36:35Speaker 2: and recruiting, a lot of, people, It's just talent right
- 36:38Speaker 2: let's just accumulate the most talent possible and then they
- 36:42Speaker 2: can we. Can, make it, work then you know that's not.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Always how it works sometimes you need a guy who's
- 36:47Speaker 2: comfortable just BEING a three and d and rebounding and
- 36:51Speaker 2: coming off the bench and being A defensive spark and
- 36:54Speaker 2: i Think you, look at connor enright And You. Look
- 36:56Speaker 2: at josy miles those guys, fit that perfectly well also
- 37:00Speaker 2: having room to improve and grow in their individual aspects.
- 37:04Speaker 2: As PLAYMAKERS and players so i think it's really important to.
- 37:09Speaker 2: IDENTIFY guys like that, i mean you look you look
- 37:13Speaker 2: at the guys that this fan base. CONNECTED with most
- 37:18Speaker 2: Recently I, THINK of anthony Leal I, THINK of luke
- 37:21Speaker 2: Goody I Think. OF tray jackson davis i Even think
- 37:25Speaker 2: of a, Miller, Cop At. Times galloway drey galloway those
- 37:30Speaker 2: are all guys who could, do multiple things well but
- 37:33Speaker 2: they fit A Role Besides maybe tray jackson davis of,
- 37:37Speaker 2: course in that conversation and, they fit a role and
- 37:40Speaker 2: they were, comfortable with that role and they knew what
- 37:42Speaker 2: they were supposed to do. And THEY did it and
- 37:45Speaker 2: i think this fan base has a certain appreciation for,
- 37:48Speaker 2: those kind of players and the Kind Of guys that darren,
- 37:51Speaker 2: DEVREZ is bringing in i think a lot of. Them
- 37:53Speaker 2: fit THAT standard.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Last guy i want to want TO get to before,
- 37:57Speaker 1: I Let, you go jason drake who if we had
- 38:00Speaker 1: this conversation a week ago and no one would have
- 38:01Speaker 1: been talking about his news of his visit, broke earlier
- 38:05Speaker 1: this week and he gets on campus makes. A commitment
- 38:07Speaker 1: shortly after he's another guy that's kind of grinded his
- 38:10Speaker 1: way up through. The college Basketball Ranks, started at CLEVELAND state,
- 38:13Speaker 1: went the juco route then had a really solid Year.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Last year at drexel and he's, another guy, that has
- 38:20Speaker 1: you know a couple. Of years of eligibility so he's
- 38:24Speaker 1: a guy that you could maybe, say the, first year
- 38:26Speaker 1: you know this is going, to be your role but
- 38:28Speaker 1: you have a chance to step into a bigger role,
- 38:30Speaker 1: maybe in year two but already a guy that's Proven
- 38:32Speaker 1: himself at. THE division one level i think he averaged
- 38:34Speaker 1: over twelve points over three rebounds. OF her three assists
- 38:38Speaker 1: i know you did a breakdown, on him most recently
- 38:40Speaker 1: so sure he's still. Fresh in your mind what did
- 38:43Speaker 1: you like about his game and what you saw? From
- 38:44Speaker 1: him ON film.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Biggest thing i liked. ABOUT it, his mentality i mean
- 38:50Speaker 2: this is a Kid He goes to cleveland. STATE for
- 38:51Speaker 2: a year i actually read the interview you, put out
- 38:54Speaker 2: with him and you know things don't. Go well for,
- 38:58Speaker 2: him he wasn't playing he didn't necessarily fit in with
- 39:04Speaker 2: the system, there then he's, Like you know what i'm.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Gonna take some time i'm Going To Go to butler Community,
- 39:09Speaker 2: college Out in kansas and i'm going to. Work on
- 39:12Speaker 2: my skills he only averaged nine points A game, at
- 39:16Speaker 2: the juco level but he did enough to prove to
- 39:19Speaker 2: people that he Could PLAY at. The division ie Level,
- 39:22Speaker 2: he goes to drexel A, team in the cia which
- 39:26Speaker 2: you know they've had, their ups and downs but a
- 39:28Speaker 2: program that has Produced Some guys a marii, williams came
- 39:31Speaker 2: from There who was at kentucky last season and was
- 39:35Speaker 2: one of the better rim. Runners in the country And You,
- 39:38Speaker 2: look at jason drake he's kind of that do it all.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Depth piece point guard he can run the. Pick and
- 39:45Speaker 2: roll effectively he's, effective on the perimeter shot just under
- 39:50Speaker 2: forty percent from three eighty seven percent, from the foul
- 39:53Speaker 2: line more than. Capable as a shooter and then he's
- 39:57Speaker 2: got a good assist rate twenty seven point six that
- 40:00Speaker 2: was SIXTH. Highest in the cia and then he's also
- 40:03Speaker 2: a bit of a bulldog in transition who loves. To
- 40:06Speaker 2: push the pace fourteen percent of his. BASKETS came in
- 40:10Speaker 2: transition i don't think When We're. Talking about jason drake,
- 40:13Speaker 2: we're not, talking about you know the Starting point guard.
- 40:15Speaker 2: IN indiana next season. I know we're not we're, not
- 40:18Speaker 2: talking about that. But you said it multiple years of
- 40:21Speaker 2: eligibility of REMAINING because, of the juco ruling he's got
- 40:24Speaker 2: to be. A valuable, depth piece and again you look
- 40:28Speaker 2: At The guards that darren, DeVries has brought in they
- 40:31Speaker 2: all kind of, fit. This certain mold right they've all got,
- 40:36Speaker 2: this good assist, rate low turnover rate can, Shoot the
- 40:40Speaker 2: basketball well, they're capable from distance and they've all kind
- 40:45Speaker 2: of got that underdog mentality and that little bit of.
- 40:49Speaker 2: An EDGE to them and i think to play point
- 40:53Speaker 2: guard At a school like Indiana And, in the big
- 40:56Speaker 2: ten that's. Kind Of A necessity and jason drake was
- 41:01Speaker 2: basically a. Do it all player he's got. A good
- 41:04Speaker 2: tool kit he's not going to. LIGHT it up offensively
- 41:07Speaker 2: i don't think he'll ever be that kind of player,
- 41:10Speaker 2: at the college level but another guy that you can,
- 41:13Speaker 2: fit into a role and he's comfortable. BEING in that role.
- 41:18Speaker 1: I loved how HE talked about and i didn't. Even
- 41:21Speaker 1: bring this up he just brought it, Up on his
- 41:23Speaker 1: own like Growing up rooting for michigan and the fact
- 41:26Speaker 1: that he's going to be able to Now Play, in
- 41:27Speaker 1: the big ten like that was always. A dream of
- 41:29Speaker 1: it like, that's cool to hear, like because you know
- 41:32Speaker 1: covering recruiting FOR as, long as, I have you know
- 41:33Speaker 1: i've talked to plenty of kids like ranked, anywhere from
- 41:37Speaker 1: you know. THE five star kids i remember One Time.
- 41:39Speaker 1: TALKING to kyrie irving I Remember talking To tim priler when.
- 41:42Speaker 1: India Had recruited him so i've kind of talked to.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Every type of prospect but the fact that he brought
- 41:49Speaker 1: that up in terms of it being a dream for
- 41:51Speaker 1: him To Be, in the big ten you don't necessarily
- 41:52Speaker 1: hear that a lot from. A lot, of kids i
- 41:56Speaker 1: mean it's a lot of kids expect maybe that they're
- 41:59Speaker 1: going to be going to. The highest high level he
- 42:02Speaker 1: actually probably that was something he thought about as, a
- 42:06Speaker 1: high school kid and now he's actually going to get.
- 42:09Speaker 1: To live that out and He Mentioned playing against michigan
- 42:11Speaker 1: State And walking into assembly. HALL and, That feeling i mean,
- 42:14Speaker 1: i'm sure You Know, playing at Cleveland, state playing At,
- 42:16Speaker 1: juco playing At Drexel walking into assembly hall was special for,
- 42:20Speaker 1: him because you know he's felt. Like HE finally arrived
- 42:23Speaker 1: and i feel like just all of these guys coming
- 42:26Speaker 1: from where they all have, their own different path. Their
- 42:28Speaker 1: OWN different story but i think a, lot most of
- 42:31Speaker 1: them if, not all of them are going to feel
- 42:33Speaker 1: appreciative just for the opportunity to play At, a PROGRAM
- 42:35Speaker 1: like indiana whereas i don't necessarily think we could say
- 42:38Speaker 1: that about everyone that's come in the. Last couple of
- 42:40Speaker 1: years and this is.
- 42:42Speaker 2: Where you go back And You listen to darren. Devreeze's
- 42:46Speaker 2: introductory press, conference you, talked about you know when it comes,
- 42:50Speaker 2: to assembling a roster there's certain things besides player talent
- 42:57Speaker 2: level and role that. You have to consider what kind of?
- 43:00Speaker 2: People are they are what kind of guy are they
- 43:03Speaker 2: going to be? In the locker room are they gonna
- 43:05Speaker 2: love playing? In the candy stripes is that something that's going?
- 43:08Speaker 2: To MATTER to them and i think you look across
- 43:11Speaker 2: the board at the kind of players that, THEY'VE gotten so,
- 43:15Speaker 2: far i think most if not all of them. Fit
- 43:18Speaker 2: INTO that mold and i think that's a really underrated
- 43:22Speaker 2: valuable aspect when it, Comes to acquiring, players because, you
- 43:28Speaker 2: mentioned you know guys who they love, playing for a
- 43:31Speaker 2: team right they want to be. In a team environment
- 43:34Speaker 2: they want to be at a place where the team
- 43:36Speaker 2: is above all and, you share the basketball, play for,
- 43:41Speaker 2: each other play together play for the name on the, front.
- 43:43Speaker 2: OF the jersey right i mean That's kind of what
- 43:46Speaker 2: indiana is about and has been about in the entire.
- 43:50Speaker 2: History OF the program and i think you know that
- 43:52Speaker 2: he identifies that that's important to people, in this fan
- 43:56Speaker 2: base and he's finding players where that's important.
- 43:59Speaker 1: To, Them, for sure well duram where can people read?
