- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumontie Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:11Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:15Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:20Speaker 1: a hater. It's a bonus episode for you. We're going
- 0:23Speaker 1: to talk a little NBA in just a moment. Also
- 0:26Speaker 1: take your voicemails. So Monday night, the Chiefs played against
- 0:31Speaker 1: the Jaguars. And I got to tell you, man, it
- 0:34Speaker 1: was really looking like the Chiefs were heading right back
- 0:36Speaker 1: to the Super Bowl until they fuck around and lost.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I don't really know any other way to put that.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The Mahomes pick six, for example, that was, oh man,
- 0:48Speaker 1: fucking around, man.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Just got caught up in that.
- 0:51Speaker 1: It looked, and Ryan, you tell me if I'm crazy, man,
- 0:53Speaker 1: but it was looking like the Chiefs of your youth
- 0:57Speaker 1: a little early there.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you get out to early 14-point lead
- 1:03Speaker 3: Mahomes is throwing the ball over the field. Xavier Worthy
- 1:06Speaker 3: is looking good. And this is the exact sort of
- 1:08Speaker 3: game they won every time last year and seem to
- 1:12Speaker 3: lose every time this year. Yes.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Now, I want you to tell me what you think
- 1:15Speaker 1: about this right fast, because I think that we've talked
- 1:17Speaker 1: a lot about the Chiefs and the lack of weaponry
- 1:21Speaker 1: that they had given Mahomes over time.
- 1:22Speaker 2: And I think that that's fair.
- 1:23Speaker 1: But either Taequann Thornton, Hollywood Brown or Xavier Worthy is
- 1:29Speaker 1: going to be the number three receiver.
- 1:31Speaker 2: For this team.
- 1:32Speaker 1: That to me sounds like a very good receiving core.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I knew you have to remember after in two weeks,
- 1:36Speaker 3: they're getting Rasheed Rice back.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Yes. Yes.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And once every month or so, you'll probably get a
- 1:42Speaker 1: good game out of Travis Kelsey. They got a touchdown
- 1:44Speaker 1: last night. In fact, and that's no, he just, oh man,
- 1:47Speaker 1: like it amazes me how we just completely ignored it.
- 1:50Speaker 1: These cats get old.
- 1:52Speaker 3: He's one of the like five or six NFL players
- 1:55Speaker 3: older than me.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:57Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:58Speaker 2: How about this? If I'm not mistaken, He's older than Gronk.
- 2:02Speaker 3: They're almost exactly the same age. And Gronk is almost
- 2:06Speaker 3: about to be eligible for the Hall of Fame.
- 2:07Speaker 2: That's exactly what I was about to say.
- 2:08Speaker 3: He retired twice.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yeah, he's going to be in the Hall of Fame.
- 2:10Speaker 1: If he had stuck out the first retirement, right?
- 2:14Speaker 3: He'd be in the Hall of Fame.
- 2:15Speaker 1: If he came back in 2020, he would be in
- 2:16Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame. And Travis Kelsey is still playing football. Now,
- 2:20Speaker 1: also of note, Rob Gronkowski played like three, four seasons
- 2:24Speaker 1: before Travis Kelsey caught a pass.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Yeah, because he came out super early, right?
- 2:31Speaker 2: He came out young.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Kelsey was in school as an older guy and then
- 2:37Speaker 1: missed the first season with an injury, right? So we
- 2:40Speaker 1: get these weird quirks. But anyway, the other thing that
- 2:43Speaker 1: was like, damn, the Chiefs just got fucked around and lost. Travis,
- 2:47Speaker 1: not Travis, Trevor Lawrence. It's one thing when I call
- 2:51Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson, Jordan Jefferson, because Jordan Jefferson is his brother.
- 2:54Speaker 2: That's who we met first.
- 2:55Speaker 1: But if I call Trevor Lawrence, Travis Lawrence, that, that,
- 2:59Speaker 1: I mean, my dad wouldn't even do that. But anyway,
- 3:04Speaker 1: if you did not see the touchdown where the Jaguars
- 3:08Speaker 1: won this game, Trevor Lawrence, one of his two rushing touchdowns,
- 3:12Speaker 1: by the way, Trevor Lawrence drops back and falls down.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Dropping back. But nobody touched him.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And so he gets up and it's kind of a
- 3:26Speaker 1: chaotic scramble. It doesn't appear that he even bothered to
- 3:29Speaker 1: look to see if perhaps there was a pass for
- 3:31Speaker 1: him to throw. He got up and I mean, Trevor
- 3:35Speaker 1: Lawrence is a fairly athletic chap, but I mean, he's
- 3:40Speaker 1: not Michael Vick. He got up and he put everything
- 3:44Speaker 1: together and he went in and he scored a touchdown.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And I don't know if anybody on the internet has
- 3:51Speaker 1: put any music to that video. Back when you could
- 3:55Speaker 1: talk about Kanye in front of people, it was the
- 3:58Speaker 1: father stretched my hands joint for those kinds of things.
- 4:02Speaker 1: If you wanted to go real old school, because I
- 4:11Speaker 1: need some ironic triumphant music for what went on. I don't,
- 4:17Speaker 1: you know, I'm a younger sibling and therefore you have
- 4:21Speaker 1: different kinds of events and things that happen in your
- 4:23Speaker 1: life as a younger sibling. And every now and then
- 4:27Speaker 1: you got to like, try to run away.
- 4:30Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 4:31Speaker 1: Like my siblings are way older, so they was never
- 4:33Speaker 1: going to do anything terrible to me. But at the
- 4:35Speaker 1: same time, you don't really know this. And when you
- 4:38Speaker 1: running away, when you fall down and have to get up,
- 4:43Speaker 1: it feels like you're moving like molasses trying to get
- 4:47Speaker 1: it back together because the stakes are so high. It's
- 4:50Speaker 1: not even so much about how fast you're actually moving.
- 4:53Speaker 1: It's about everything relative to the sphere of the world
- 4:56Speaker 1: that you happen to be in in that moment. I
- 5:00Speaker 1: cannot imagine how panicked and terrified and how slowly Trevor
- 5:05Speaker 1: Lawrence felt like he was moving when he was trying
- 5:08Speaker 1: to get up after falling down.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Because I don't care what nobody say.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I can't imagine having to go back into that locker
- 5:14Speaker 1: room having to say, sorry about that, fellas.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I just tripped over my shoelaces. I'll make sure I
- 5:18Speaker 2: tie them next time.
- 5:21Speaker 1: We got a chance to go out here and win
- 5:22Speaker 1: the game right now. And we don't win it because
- 5:24Speaker 1: I feel down. Now, on the other hand, imagine what
- 5:29Speaker 1: it's like being any of those Kansas City Chiefs who
- 5:33Speaker 1: have now realized that Trevor Lawrence has fallen down and
- 5:38Speaker 1: it might.
- 5:39Speaker 4: Be your chance to be a hero, to go make
- 5:42Speaker 4: that move. But what if you made that move and
- 5:46Speaker 4: Trevor Lawrence got up and he ran right where you
- 5:49Speaker 4: were supposed to be, but you thought you had your chance?
- 5:54Speaker 4: I could just see thought bubbles for everybody in that
- 5:57Speaker 4: moment as it happens.
- 6:00Speaker 1: And then Trevor Lawrence scores the touchdown. And then Trevor
- 6:03Speaker 1: Lawrence thought bubble turns into had it all the way.
- 6:08Speaker 1: And the Chiefs thought bubbles turn to, damn, maybe we
- 6:13Speaker 1: not going to make the playoffs.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Like, Ryan, you think they're going to make the playoffs?
- 6:17Speaker 3: I do. I just, they have a tough schedule, but
- 6:21Speaker 3: the AFC is bad. there, there's a lot of teams
- 6:25Speaker 3: you can almost go through and cross off already. We're not,
- 6:28Speaker 3: we're not even to, you know, well, this is starting
- 6:31Speaker 3: to start getting into the holidays of October yet, but
- 6:34Speaker 3: I mean, it is, yeah. I mean, do you believe,
- 6:36Speaker 3: do you like, even in that own division, do you
- 6:38Speaker 3: believe in the chargers? No offensive linemen. Do you believe
- 6:41Speaker 3: in Bo Nix?
- 6:43Speaker 1: You got, you hit, you hit it right there. That's
- 6:45Speaker 1: what I was about to say. We're talking about whether
- 6:48Speaker 1: or not they're going to go to the playoffs.
- 6:49Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:50Speaker 2: If you watched the chargers play Washington, yeah.
- 6:54Speaker 1: On Sunday, you feel like the Chiefs are going to
- 6:57Speaker 1: win the division.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:58Speaker 1: And by the way, in spite of going on the
- 7:02Speaker 1: road and beating the Eagles and scoring 18 points in
- 7:05Speaker 1: the fourth quarter, I do not think there was very
- 7:08Speaker 1: much encouraging that came out of that, to me at least.
- 7:12Speaker 2: For Broncos-Eagles.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Like, I felt like the Eagles lost that game, but
- 7:16Speaker 1: I did not come away from that thinking, oh, okay,
- 7:18Speaker 1: maybe I've been wrong about the Broncos, and I damn
- 7:20Speaker 1: sure didn't come away from it feeling like I was
- 7:22Speaker 1: wrong about Bo Nix. Like, I'm out here having to
- 7:25Speaker 1: try to, you know, entertain some possibilities with Baker Mayfield
- 7:29Speaker 1: and Sam Darnold.
- 7:30Speaker 2: I still cannot believe they have played their way out
- 7:32Speaker 2: of Journeyman.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Even Geno Smith didn't really play his way out of
- 7:36Speaker 1: Journeyman because he went on another journey right after he had, like.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Got, and now he out here looking like the Journeyman.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Journey might be over soon.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I say the end of the end of the road
- 7:45Speaker 2: is what it's looking like over there right now.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And I think that's just because he's like, dude, I
- 7:48Speaker 1: play with bums and I got to somebody got to
- 7:51Speaker 1: do something. I feel like he I feel like he
- 7:52Speaker 1: taking one for the team right now because I can't
- 7:54Speaker 1: see how he got so bad so fast after being
- 7:57Speaker 1: I thought very good last year.
- 7:59Speaker 3: I mean, Bo Nix falls into, I think, where you
- 8:02Speaker 3: and I have a similar bias, which is players who
- 8:05Speaker 3: are not good in the SEC.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yes. That's it.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I saw him be not good for those whole three years.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Bo Nix is as old as Travis Kelsey. I hope
- 8:17Speaker 2: he figures some shit out by now.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:20Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no. There are.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Bo Nix is old enough. We need to keep him
- 8:24Speaker 3: away from Mark Sanchez.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Yo, there's something very interesting that happens when you watch
- 8:28Speaker 1: a guy play too much college football. Like, I think
- 8:31Speaker 1: for real this happened with Jimmy Johnson and Troy Aikman. Like,
- 8:34Speaker 1: they drafted Troy Aikman with the number one pick and
- 8:36Speaker 1: then drafted Steve Walsh in the supplemental draft a couple
- 8:39Speaker 1: of months after that because Jimmy's boys broke Troy's leg.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Right? In that game.
- 8:44Speaker 1: And Jimmy had been watching Troy since he was in
- 8:46Speaker 1: high school because Jimmy coached at Oklahoma State.
- 8:48Speaker 3: You know too much.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I think he knew too much. But I don't think
- 8:51Speaker 1: we're wrong in this about Bo Nix. Like every now
- 8:54Speaker 1: and then I see Bo Nix make like a flash play.
- 8:57Speaker 1: But what I think Bo Nix is when it really
- 8:59Speaker 1: comes down to it, he has an offensive genius head
- 9:04Speaker 1: coach who I think believes that his system can figure
- 9:09Speaker 1: out what to do with a quarterback if they have
- 9:11Speaker 1: insert traits here. And Bo Nix has those traits, and
- 9:15Speaker 1: he thinks that, okay, we can work this out in
- 9:17Speaker 1: what I do.
- 9:18Speaker 3: And you hear Sean Payton talk about what he liked
- 9:20Speaker 3: about Bo Nix so much. He said he didn't turn
- 9:22Speaker 3: the ball over and take sacks, which is code speak
- 9:25Speaker 3: for he does what I'll tell him to do.
- 9:27Speaker 2: He does what I'll tell him to do, but let's
- 9:28Speaker 2: be honest about this.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Drew Brees is the highest echelon system quarterback ever. like
- 9:38Speaker 1: he got it together at the end in San Diego
- 9:41Speaker 1: right I don't want to pretend like he didn't and
- 9:43Speaker 1: I think it was running a North Turner offense like
- 9:45Speaker 1: getting toward the end too so I don't want to
- 9:46Speaker 1: pretend like he never had anything going to San Diego
- 9:48Speaker 1: right but go look at the offense Drew Brees ran
- 9:52Speaker 1: at Purdue go look how it started in the NFL
- 9:56Speaker 1: where it was so bad that he won comeback player
- 9:58Speaker 1: of the year in 2004 and the wasn't an injury.
- 10:01Speaker 1: And then go look at what it was when he
- 10:03Speaker 1: got with Sean Payton. That Sean Payton offense that he
- 10:05Speaker 1: was running looked a lot like what they were doing
- 10:07Speaker 1: at Purdue, which is a super-duper system quarterback offense. That's
- 10:11Speaker 1: not shade to Drew Brees. He is a no-brainer Hall
- 10:14Speaker 1: of Famer who somehow figured out how to make his
- 10:17Speaker 1: neck longer. There's no way his neck was always that long.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I mean, here's the thing. Every quarterback who is under
- 10:26Speaker 3: 6'2 is a system quarterback.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Or super athlete.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Or super, super athlete, yes.
- 10:31Speaker 6: Right.
- 10:31Speaker 1: But Drew Brees is out there on his toenails with
- 10:34Speaker 1: his neck all the way up, looking over the lines
- 10:37Speaker 1: and making it happen. And so I think with Bo Nix,
- 10:39Speaker 1: Sean Payton sees a guy like, oh, if he'll just
- 10:41Speaker 1: do what I tell him, then we can make everything work.
- 10:44Speaker 1: But to get that back to the Chiefs, the way
- 10:46Speaker 1: things are stacking up for the Chiefs right now, them
- 10:49Speaker 1: going to the playoffs, yeah, they're going to the playoffs.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I'm going to go ahead and say it right now.
- 10:55Speaker 2: They're going to win this. the AFC West. That's right.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Now, I don't know if they're going to have the
- 11:03Speaker 1: number one overall seed. That appears to be.
- 11:10Speaker 2: The Indianapolis Colts.
- 11:15Speaker 3: You get to play the Titans twice. You know, that helps.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Titans twice, Texans twice, and honestly, you could do worse
- 11:22Speaker 1: than a couple of games against the Jags.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Right?
- 11:25Speaker 1: But no, look, I mean, How do you feel about
- 11:28Speaker 1: the fact that Buffalo can't stop nobody from running the ball?
- 11:31Speaker 3: And also, I mean, we thought, you know, Bill's Ravens
- 11:34Speaker 3: opening Sunday night of the season was a match between
- 11:37Speaker 3: two Titans.
- 11:38Speaker 2: No, it was not.
- 11:39Speaker 3: And it turns out the Ravens are not, you know,
- 11:42Speaker 3: the juggernauts we thought they were.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Well, hold on.
- 11:43Speaker 1: To be fair, though, the version of the Ravens that
- 11:46Speaker 1: we see now is not the version of the Ravens that.
- 11:49Speaker 3: I mean, the offense is... you know, the, but that
- 11:53Speaker 3: defense is obviously.
- 11:54Speaker 2: The defense is Chiefs.
- 11:55Speaker 3: You are correct.
- 11:55Speaker 6: You're right.
- 11:56Speaker 2: You, you are right. They are right.
- 11:57Speaker 1: They, they, the Chiefs have taken charitable contributions. I mean,
- 12:00Speaker 1: that Chiefs, the Ravens, they're taking the Chiefs too, but
- 12:02Speaker 1: they're taking them charitable contributions on defense. You are correct,
- 12:04Speaker 1: but there's nothing. The bright side for the Chiefs is
- 12:07Speaker 1: there's nothing that says that you can't come out of
- 12:09Speaker 1: that conference.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Nothing at all.
- 12:11Speaker 1: And it's interesting that you mentioned the idea that the
- 12:13Speaker 1: AFC isn't good because this is I forget who I
- 12:17Speaker 1: saw mentioned this online many months ago, but this is
- 12:19Speaker 1: becoming a mirroring of the 80s and 90s where the
- 12:22Speaker 1: AFC has the quarterbacks, but the NFC has the teams.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Like all the top notch quarterbacks that we talk about
- 12:30Speaker 1: in the league, they all play in the AFC. Who's
- 12:33Speaker 1: the best quarterback in the NFC? I mean, the quarterback
- 12:36Speaker 1: playing the best in the NFC this year is Dak Prescott.
- 12:39Speaker 1: But if you were just to go through the NFC
- 12:40Speaker 1: and say, what quarterback are you giving me off of
- 12:43Speaker 1: these teams?
- 12:44Speaker 2: What's the one you're taking? Is it possibly Stafford?
- 12:49Speaker 3: It's Stafford by reputation and Hurts by accomplishments.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and yeah, I mean, go up and down. Go
- 12:58Speaker 2: up and down.
- 12:58Speaker 1: It's a weird, weird conference when they start talking about
- 13:01Speaker 1: who the quarterbacks are, and what you can get out
- 13:03Speaker 1: of them.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Is it Baker Mayfield?
- 13:05Speaker 3: I was going to say, I thought when you said
- 13:06Speaker 3: playing the best, I think you could make an argument.
- 13:09Speaker 6: You could.
- 13:10Speaker 3: It's Baker, but I mean, they're a weird team. They're
- 13:13Speaker 3: 4-1 and have a negative DVOA, which is almost impossible.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Yeah, for everybody to know what that means, that's bad.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Yeah, that's an advanced stat that says TLDR, you're not
- 13:25Speaker 3: very good.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And so for people who have heard of what DVOA
- 13:29Speaker 1: is and don't understand it, I think that this is
- 13:31Speaker 1: the easiest synopsis.
- 13:32Speaker 2: It's actually a really interesting statistic.
- 13:34Speaker 1: So the way DVOA works is it takes a measure
- 13:38Speaker 1: of every play But the measure is based on how
- 13:42Speaker 1: many yards you had to go to get the first down.
- 13:44Speaker 1: So that way, a 15-yard pass on first and 10
- 13:49Speaker 1: is not treated the same as a 15-yard pass on
- 13:52Speaker 1: third and 18, where they're in cover three and they're
- 13:55Speaker 1: letting you have everything in front of you as long
- 13:57Speaker 1: as you don't get the first down, right? So it
- 14:00Speaker 1: puts the context of the situation and the evaluation of
- 14:03Speaker 1: every play, which is to say, per play, Tampa Bay
- 14:06Speaker 1: is living that negative life. That's what they're saying. So
- 14:11Speaker 1: all of this happens and say you get the Kansas
- 14:13Speaker 1: City Chiefs and you get them in the playoffs and
- 14:16Speaker 1: you still have the best quarterback that I have ever
- 14:18Speaker 1: seen who will probably have three or four very good receivers.
- 14:24Speaker 2: By the time it comes back, by the time that
- 14:26Speaker 2: we get there.
- 14:27Speaker 1: If they figure anything out on defense, nothing that is
- 14:31Speaker 1: happening right now really matters.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Now that being said, Ryan.
- 14:36Speaker 1: The version of the Ravens that they got to play against,
- 14:39Speaker 1: was worse than the version of the Ravens that the
- 14:41Speaker 1: Bills got to play against. And that is doing a
- 14:44Speaker 1: lot to bolster a lot of what the Chiefs got going.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I mean, even if the Chiefs don't win the division,
- 14:50Speaker 3: you're going to probably be playing whoever wins the AFC North,
- 14:53Speaker 3: which is either going to be Aaron Rodgers after his
- 14:57Speaker 3: 42nd birthday or whatever the Ravens are at this point.
- 15:01Speaker 1: By the way, we will wrap on this. The Baltimore
- 15:05Speaker 1: Ravens have played five games. Do you know how many
- 15:10Speaker 1: points they have given up?
- 15:13Speaker 3: 206.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Not quite, but not far.
- 15:15Speaker 6: 177.
- 15:15Speaker 2: The Make-A-Wish Foundation has given up 154.
- 15:17Speaker 1: The Bengals have given up 156.
- 15:21Speaker 2: They have given up 177.
- 15:37Speaker 1: They will not have that same defensive coordinator all year long.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Write that down.
- 15:49Speaker 1: All right.
- 15:50Speaker 2: NBA season is getting close.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Ryan, by the time these people have a chance to
- 15:55Speaker 1: watch this, LeBron will have explained what the.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Decision part two was is that what he was.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Teasing online the second decision the.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Second decision i got a phone call from a television
- 16:05Speaker 1: network and they're like hey can you come on sometime
- 16:08Speaker 1: on tuesday talk about lebron and i said what is
- 16:12Speaker 1: there to talk about lebron they said well he's teasing
- 16:14Speaker 1: something like the second decision we're thinking it might be
- 16:17Speaker 1: retirement no.
- 16:21Speaker 2: It will it will not be that that i was certain.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Of if choosing the decision framing again is certainly a choice,
- 16:32Speaker 3: but choosing, trying to book in his career with the
- 16:35Speaker 3: worst moment of his, it does not seem, does not seem, uh,
- 16:41Speaker 3: It seems like an ad agency idea, not a LeBron idea.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I thought the lesson that they learned from the decision
- 16:47Speaker 1: part one is that there wouldn't go be no decision
- 16:49Speaker 1: part two. The lesson they learned from the decision part
- 16:52Speaker 1: one was to put out a press release for the
- 16:54Speaker 1: next time that you made your decision.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Of where to go.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Yeah, call Lee Jenkins.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Yeah, never did this again. But we are getting close
- 17:02Speaker 1: to the season. The Lakers are going to be fascinating.
- 17:05Speaker 2: J.J.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Reddick says that he talks to Chad GPT all the
- 17:08Speaker 1: time because he's.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Man, man, man, JJ is an interesting situation, right?
- 17:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:18Speaker 2: I still think that job is going to kill him.
- 17:20Speaker 2: I still don't think that he has the temperament.
- 17:22Speaker 3: I think he has to give everyone on his staff
- 17:24Speaker 3: a break from him. That's why he talks to Chad
- 17:26Speaker 3: DBT for an hour and a half a day.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Yeah, in fact, who on the staff came up with
- 17:30Speaker 2: the idea?
- 17:32Speaker 3: That's a genius. Yeah, who was like, hey, man, you know,
- 17:34Speaker 3: you could always just ask Chad GBT this.
- 17:36Speaker 1: But here's the thing about Chad GBT, and we've talked
- 17:39Speaker 1: about this a little bit here. What ChatGPT don't ever
- 17:42Speaker 1: give you is no backtalk.
- 17:44Speaker 2: So you can.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Tell ChatGPT anything, and it's going to tell you that
- 17:49Speaker 1: you're right.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Sounds like JJ Reddick's best friend.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 1: And I don't know exactly how well JJ deals with feedback.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I don't have a great answer for that. But if
- 17:58Speaker 1: you don't like backtalk, ChatGPT is, in fact, for you. Now, again,
- 18:02Speaker 1: you can always read books.
- 18:04Speaker 5: But!
- 18:05Speaker 1: Chad GPT is the answer that many people have chosen.
- 18:08Speaker 1: But we came to talk about the NBA because Giannis
- 18:11Speaker 1: Antetokounmpo is back with the Milwaukee Bucks. Sham Sharania of
- 18:16Speaker 1: ESPN wrote a very long piece basically about what happened
- 18:24Speaker 1: or did not happen during the summer with the Bucks
- 18:27Speaker 1: and Giannis and the other interesting group in the story
- 18:32Speaker 1: is the Knicks. Apparently the Knicks were the only team
- 18:36Speaker 1: that Giannis demonstrated an interest in playing for. And the
- 18:41Speaker 1: Knicks did not ever make a real offer to Milwaukee
- 18:45Speaker 1: in large part because the Knicks traded all their stuff
- 18:48Speaker 1: to get Mikael Bridges and then have signed Mikael Bridges
- 18:51Speaker 1: to a massive extension. That is who boy, um, He
- 18:57Speaker 1: better hope Knicks fans don't remember that because they're going
- 18:59Speaker 1: to hate him unless something drastically changes.
- 19:02Speaker 2: About his approach to physical basketball.
- 19:04Speaker 1: They are going to hate him by the time this
- 19:05Speaker 1: year ends because it's going to be a very, very
- 19:07Speaker 1: antsy situation with the Knicks. Anyway, Giannis is back with Milwaukee.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Giannis is in the place with Milwaukee where he's like, hey, man,
- 19:14Speaker 1: if we're not looking like we're a contender for a championship,
- 19:18Speaker 1: then what am I doing here? I would like to
- 19:20Speaker 1: go somewhere else. And I think that that is a...
- 19:26Speaker 1: reasonable premise it is a reasonable idea keeping in mind
- 19:31Speaker 1: the bucks have not been out of the first round
- 19:33Speaker 1: the last three seasons um I made when we did
- 19:38Speaker 1: that list of 25 athletes in the last 25 years
- 19:41Speaker 1: Nick made a fair argument that I penalized Kobe for
- 19:47Speaker 1: those three years in the middle of his career post Shaq,
- 19:50Speaker 1: pre Gasol. But we don't do that to Steph Curry,
- 19:55Speaker 1: who had a similar lull.
- 19:57Speaker 2: In his career.
- 19:58Speaker 1: And I think the argument that I would make against
- 20:00Speaker 1: that is What it meant to have a superstar player
- 20:04Speaker 1: in terms of your outcomes was different in 2006 and
- 20:07Speaker 1: 2007 than what it is now because the rules of
- 20:10Speaker 1: the game have changed.
- 20:11Speaker 2: The rules of the league have changed where it is
- 20:14Speaker 2: much more difficult for a great player to have the impact.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Than it was at that time. And there's more great basketball.
- 20:19Speaker 3: There's more NBA-level basketball players.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 20:22Speaker 3: But 20 years ago, we couldn't. We had pretty much
- 20:26Speaker 3: the same amount of successful quarterbacks. We have two to
- 20:29Speaker 3: three exes. capable nba basketball players that we.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Did i'll put it to you like this in 2007
- 20:34Speaker 1: lebron james could drag that team he dragged to the
- 20:36Speaker 1: finals you can you can't do that.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Now that's a 30 win team in today's nba.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Yeah yeah you couldn't do that then like it's not
- 20:42Speaker 1: that's where the game is changed so that's kind of
- 20:44Speaker 1: the argument that i make there but at the same
- 20:46Speaker 1: time like did they lose in five games in the
- 20:50Speaker 1: first round is the number one seed.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Like i mean these are It's some indefensible.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Losses that he has had and that he has put up.
- 21:00Speaker 1: The fact that they won a championship and Game 6
- 21:03Speaker 1: went the way that Game 6 went means that there's
- 21:06Speaker 1: some questions that we no longer ask about him. But
- 21:08Speaker 1: it is somewhat, it's very interesting that the question has
- 21:11Speaker 1: always been, are the Bucs doing.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Enough for Giannis?
- 21:16Speaker 1: And the question has not been, do the Bucs need
- 21:19Speaker 1: to go ahead and move on to their future without him,
- 21:23Speaker 1: given what his age is and given that he has
- 21:25Speaker 1: a game, that the aging process as the athleticism declines
- 21:31Speaker 1: is probably going to be a bit harsh unless he
- 21:34Speaker 1: lets Akeem Olajuwon take some of his money and go
- 21:37Speaker 1: down there and really get his ass to dream shaking.
- 21:40Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? They can get down there
- 21:41Speaker 2: talking Nigerian stuff. whatever that means. They can do that.
- 21:49Speaker 2: But anyway, I.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Still think the best play for both parties involved is
- 21:54Speaker 1: real simple, man. Keep Giannis and Giannis stick around. This
- 22:00Speaker 1: is the thing about the sports, right? And we can't
- 22:05Speaker 1: say this to people out loud. And it's very, very interesting.
- 22:13Speaker 1: For most people, kind of sticking around where you at
- 22:17Speaker 1: and making it happen is the best move. Or maybe
- 22:22Speaker 1: I could be saying it's the most convenient move, but
- 22:24Speaker 1: I think very often and in a lot of ways,
- 22:27Speaker 1: it ultimately proves to be the most fulfilling move. And
- 22:32Speaker 1: I think in the current NBA, and we've talked about
- 22:35Speaker 1: this a little bit before, but I want to stay
- 22:38Speaker 1: with this point and keep reminding people of it because
- 22:40Speaker 1: I think it's going to prove itself in the end.
- 22:44Speaker 1: It's going to be so hard to keep a title
- 22:47Speaker 1: window open because they've done so much.
- 22:49Speaker 2: With the rules to encourage parity.
- 22:52Speaker 1: That you can go leave now and hop on the
- 22:56Speaker 1: next big thing because it gives you a chance at
- 22:59Speaker 1: a championship. But that chance at a championship is not
- 23:05Speaker 1: going to be sustainable in all likelihood, which means in
- 23:09Speaker 1: a year, maybe two, You're going to be out here
- 23:13Speaker 1: looking for another place to go.
- 23:16Speaker 2: And this isn't college.
- 23:18Speaker 1: And when I say this isn't college, I mean that
- 23:20Speaker 1: hop year to year transfer situation. It's much easier for
- 23:24Speaker 1: them to do that now than it is for somebody
- 23:27Speaker 1: to do that in the NBA. If you are moving
- 23:30Speaker 1: on to this next team, somebody is going to have
- 23:32Speaker 1: to give up some money. There's going to be scarce,
- 23:35Speaker 1: finite resources that have to be dealt with in order
- 23:38Speaker 1: to make that happen.
- 23:40Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 23:41Speaker 1: Like This is, these teams wanted to find ways to
- 23:47Speaker 1: encourage players to stay. And originally the plan was, we
- 23:53Speaker 1: will make it so that you could pay a guy
- 23:55Speaker 1: more money to stay and thereby that guy won't wind
- 24:00Speaker 1: up leaving, right?
- 24:02Speaker 2: And that happened.
- 24:03Speaker 1: But what that did as much as anything else was,
- 24:06Speaker 1: for example, allow the Wizards to pay John Wall and
- 24:10Speaker 1: Bradley Beal.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Big win for you guys, right?
- 24:16Speaker 1: And look, those are two guys that were very good
- 24:17Speaker 1: players and I think very important to that franchise. But
- 24:21Speaker 1: I don't think that's how the owners envisioned that these
- 24:24Speaker 1: things would go, right? But it turns out that the
- 24:29Speaker 1: best way it appears to encourage these people to stay
- 24:31Speaker 1: in the same place is that grass ain't greener over there.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Because what they were trying to say was the grass
- 24:38Speaker 1: is greener over here and is green with this money.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Now the argument is, if you go over there and
- 24:46Speaker 1: it doesn't work right away, then what?
- 24:51Speaker 3: Yeah, there's... Like, title windows used to be four or
- 24:55Speaker 3: five years. I mean, when LeBron was going back to
- 24:58Speaker 3: the first decision, he's saying not two, not three, not four.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I mean, I think if you ask people how many
- 25:05Speaker 3: titles that group of guys are going to win, people
- 25:08Speaker 3: would have said three or four championships. And now title windows...
- 25:10Speaker 3: 18 months?
- 25:13Speaker 1: I think the title window used to be as long
- 25:15Speaker 1: as you had a title player.
- 25:17Speaker 6: Right.
- 25:18Speaker 2: So, like, for me, back in the day, and I
- 25:20Speaker 2: don't know how to... So, I don't know how to define.
- 25:22Speaker 1: The term superstar in this era.
- 25:25Speaker 2: And the reason I say that is this.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Back in the day, the way I defined a superstar was,
- 25:29Speaker 1: does this team have a chance to win a championship
- 25:32Speaker 1: just because you are on the team?
- 25:35Speaker 5: Right?
- 25:36Speaker 2: So, it is for that reason that I had said...
- 25:40Speaker 2: Pete Dwight Howard was a superstar.
- 25:44Speaker 1: A lot of people might not have felt that way,
- 25:45Speaker 1: but Pete Dwight Howard was a superstar. You had a
- 25:48Speaker 1: chance to win a championship just because you had him
- 25:52Speaker 1: on the team. Steph Curry, the 2015 version, like get
- 25:56Speaker 1: around to there. That was a superstar. The reason they
- 25:59Speaker 1: had a chance to win championships and did win championships
- 26:02Speaker 1: is because that guy was on the team. LeBron James,
- 26:04Speaker 1: an example of a guy that I think fit that
- 26:06Speaker 1: same description, right? You can win a championship simply because
- 26:10Speaker 1: This guy plays for your team.
- 26:14Speaker 2: That was it.
- 26:15Speaker 1: There is no player in the NBA right now that
- 26:18Speaker 1: is so good that you have a chance to win
- 26:19Speaker 1: a championship just because that player was on your team.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Nikola Jokic is probably one of the 15 best players
- 26:24Speaker 1: in the history of the NBA. You do not have
- 26:27Speaker 1: a chance to win a championship. simply because that guy is.
- 26:31Speaker 2: On your team.
- 26:32Speaker 1: The impact of one individual player just isn't that strong anymore.
- 26:38Speaker 2: It doesn't exist in that way, right?
- 26:41Speaker 1: So now, if you are that guy, you're in a place,
- 26:49Speaker 1: they put the people around you that make you good
- 26:51Speaker 1: enough to win a championship, and then in a year,
- 26:53Speaker 1: maybe two, that all becomes too expensive, and then you
- 26:56Speaker 1: break that thing down for parts. That's what the new
- 27:00Speaker 1: NBA is going to be. And so to me, it
- 27:03Speaker 1: reminds me. I'll put names to it. So after I
- 27:12Speaker 1: did the show called High Noon for ESPN and after
- 27:15Speaker 1: it ended, I got a phone call on a phone
- 27:19Speaker 1: call with an infamous gentleman named Norby Williams.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:23Speaker 1: And so I get on the phone with Norby and just,
- 27:26Speaker 1: you know, talk about the future, where are things going?
- 27:28Speaker 1: I just signed a contract extension, you know, but there
- 27:31Speaker 1: was just COVID. There's nothing really for me to do.
- 27:32Speaker 1: And I didn't really know the cat. So I was like, hey, man,
- 27:34Speaker 1: let's get on the phone and let's talk it out.
- 27:36Speaker 2: And I'll never forget. And if you know anything about
- 27:39Speaker 2: Norby's time at.
- 27:40Speaker 1: ESPN, Norby, what they call a survivor. Every job, I think,
- 27:45Speaker 1: has somebody that's just a survivor. And, you know, all
- 27:49Speaker 1: these things happen and somehow this guy stick around, right? Norby,
- 27:53Speaker 1: until he ran across Pat McAfee, was a survivor. So anyway,
- 27:58Speaker 1: I'm on the phone with Norby and Norby just says
- 28:00Speaker 1: to me, you know what?
- 28:03Speaker 2: Somebody like you.
- 28:03Speaker 1: It just needs to just just wait a little while
- 28:09Speaker 1: and things will change.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Let's wait for things to change. That's what he told me.
- 28:13Speaker 1: It's like, look, things were going a certain way and
- 28:17Speaker 1: you were up. And now things have changed. And now
- 28:20Speaker 1: you're down. But if you can wait this out long enough,
- 28:24Speaker 1: it'll turn right back around into your favor. And in
- 28:27Speaker 1: a certain form or fashion, he was correct. Now, of course,
- 28:30Speaker 1: neither of us work there anymore. So you could question
- 28:33Speaker 1: in total what the advice was.
- 28:35Speaker 2: But he wasn't wrong. He wasn't wrong about it. Sometimes
- 28:39Speaker 2: things change and.
- 28:40Speaker 1: You just need to lay low for a little bit
- 28:43Speaker 1: and wait for the things to turn. And I think
- 28:48Speaker 1: that the media environment and everything else has created a
- 28:51Speaker 1: circumstance where everybody feels this pressure to hurry up and
- 28:54Speaker 1: win like right now, because if you don't win like
- 28:57Speaker 1: right now, we're going to be out here talking bad
- 28:59Speaker 1: about you. But I don't think we're going to have
- 29:01Speaker 1: the capacity to talk bad about so many people anymore
- 29:04Speaker 1: because this is going to be the state of affairs.
- 29:06Speaker 2: For everybody.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Like look, what's happened with Denver where I thought Denver
- 29:11Speaker 1: was going to be able to go on a run
- 29:12Speaker 1: for years, but it turned out that the front part
- 29:14Speaker 1: of the Denver window was when Murray and Porter were hurt.
- 29:17Speaker 1: They came back for what turned out to be like
- 29:19Speaker 1: the end of the window. Then they had that down year, Ryan,
- 29:22Speaker 1: and when it got a couple more pieces and now
- 29:25Speaker 1: it looks like they are one of the top contenders
- 29:27Speaker 1: in the West again. Yeah.
- 29:28Speaker 3: We'll see how that all fits together. But I think, um,
- 29:31Speaker 3: like you said, like after they won that first title, um,
- 29:36Speaker 3: Jokic is clearly the best player in the league. You
- 29:39Speaker 3: think they're stacked. for a few more and they haven't
- 29:42Speaker 3: been back since.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just not how it works anymore. You just
- 29:45Speaker 1: got to lay low. And so for Giannis, maybe the
- 29:48Speaker 1: window was closed. Maybe the window was over. But your
- 29:51Speaker 1: chance of getting back to the top is probably just
- 29:54Speaker 1: as strong in Milwaukee as it is were you to leave.
- 29:59Speaker 1: It's probably right there. So if I'm you, I just
- 30:05Speaker 1: stick around. Football is back and so is your shot

- 32:32Speaker 3: All right, Bo, let's run through a couple quick stories.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Interesting one, speaking of ESPN, they're in a weird situation
- 32:46Speaker 3: with Paul Feinbaum. They've had to deny reports that He
- 32:49Speaker 3: has been barred from ESPN networks after his interest, stating
- 32:53Speaker 3: his interest in running for Alabama's open Senate seat. There
- 32:57Speaker 3: are reports of whether he will be back on ESPN today. Bo,
- 33:01Speaker 3: what are your thoughts on this?
- 33:02Speaker 1: Hey, man, this this there's a reason why they told
- 33:08Speaker 1: us we couldn't talk about politics back in the day
- 33:10Speaker 1: when I worked over there.
- 33:11Speaker 5: Right.
- 33:11Speaker 2: And I don't think as much as people won't believe me.
- 33:16Speaker 1: I don't think that not wanting us to talk about
- 33:18Speaker 1: politics at ESPN back in the day was nearly about
- 33:21Speaker 1: ideology than it is.
- 33:23Speaker 2: We talk about the stuff.
- 33:26Speaker 1: They be in suits at the company, got to clean
- 33:30Speaker 1: up whatever mess comes from.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:33Speaker 1: And not only do they then have to wind up
- 33:35Speaker 1: cleaning a mess that comes from it. They have to
- 33:38Speaker 1: try to clean up this mess with an understanding that
- 33:41Speaker 1: the people who are doing the mess cleaning have their
- 33:44Speaker 1: own politics also. And those are going to affect whatever
- 33:49Speaker 1: decision wind up being mad.
- 33:51Speaker 2: And then it's like, damn, what do we do?
- 33:53Speaker 1: Like, I don't know if you ever heard this story, Ryan,
- 33:55Speaker 1: but David Stern's point about the decision was fantastic, which
- 33:59Speaker 1: was the problem with the decision for LeBron was there
- 34:02Speaker 1: are 30 teams and 29 fan bases are going to
- 34:06Speaker 1: hate you.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Yeah, anything you say where 97% of the people are
- 34:11Speaker 3: unhappy is probably not the best way for our entire
- 34:15Speaker 3: league and our entire operation.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Only one set of people is going to like it. Now,
- 34:19Speaker 1: with sports by and large, there's going to be.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Basically, if you offer sports opinion, especially at a national platform,
- 34:28Speaker 1: most of the people aren't that invested in that particular
- 34:31Speaker 1: game that you're talking about. There's the fans of this team,
- 34:33Speaker 1: fans of that team, and then there's everybody else that's
- 34:35Speaker 1: just kind of looking and maybe has some general opinions,
- 34:38Speaker 1: but they don't have like a personal investment. It's not
- 34:40Speaker 1: nearly a this side, that side scenario as politics.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Is, right?
- 34:47Speaker 1: And so the idea of Feinbaum running for Senate, number one,
- 34:53Speaker 1: It squarely puts them in a this side, that side
- 34:56Speaker 1: proposition at the very least with the fan base that's
- 35:00Speaker 1: in Alabama, which I would imagine is a significant proportion
- 35:03Speaker 1: of the fan base that listens to the Firebomb show
- 35:05Speaker 1: because of its historical roots, right?
- 35:07Speaker 2: That's number one. ESPN don't want that part. They don't
- 35:12Speaker 2: want none of this.
- 35:13Speaker 1: The other part that ESPN don't want none of is
- 35:16Speaker 1: this right here. Are you pulling this guy off the
- 35:20Speaker 1: air today? because he says he's running for Senate. Now,
- 35:23Speaker 1: I will tell you, I don't have any inside information
- 35:26Speaker 1: from the company about this. I haven't talked to anybody
- 35:28Speaker 1: that works there about it. I feel very confident saying
- 35:30Speaker 1: this about the current world order at ESPN. There ain't
- 35:34Speaker 1: no rules, right? Like, not in terms of your ideology,
- 35:38Speaker 1: not in terms of what your politics are. So what
- 35:41Speaker 1: would you think? You think that because Paul Feinbaum says
- 35:45Speaker 1: that he's thinking about running for Senate, that ESPN will
- 35:49Speaker 1: pull him off the air?
- 35:50Speaker 2: For what reason?
- 35:51Speaker 1: The only reason that would make sense is the equal
- 35:55Speaker 1: time provision and them having a measure of concern about
- 35:59Speaker 1: whether or not they run into conflict with that.
- 36:03Speaker 2: And if that's the.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Case, that's perfectly fair, right? I mean, that's not even
- 36:07Speaker 1: perfectly fair. That's what they have to do.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not an editorial decision. That's a legal decision.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. There's no other option. That's what
- 36:14Speaker 2: has to be done.
- 36:15Speaker 1: But I don't think for a moment that it is
- 36:18Speaker 1: an editorial decision that You said you're down with Donald Trump.
- 36:24Speaker 2: We can't have that. Did you just see what Iger
- 36:27Speaker 2: did for Trump? Did you did you just see it?
- 36:30Speaker 2: It just happened over there with the Kimmel thing. Did
- 36:32Speaker 2: you see what happened?
- 36:34Speaker 1: No, I don't believe for a moment that for reasons
- 36:37Speaker 1: of politics that they would tell Feinbaum that he's got
- 36:40Speaker 1: to get off the air.
- 36:41Speaker 2: But I can tell you this. Did you see somebody
- 36:43Speaker 2: called in? They had a caller. They had to drop
- 36:46Speaker 2: the call immediately.
- 36:47Speaker 3: And you saw my mom chuckling?
- 36:49Speaker 1: Yeah, he got on there talking about the politics. And
- 36:52Speaker 1: they had to dump him immediately? They don't want that
- 36:56Speaker 1: every day. I will make one last point. And, I mean,
- 37:00Speaker 1: if you guys know much of the history, that's not
- 37:03Speaker 1: my guy. That's not my friend.
- 37:05Speaker 6: Right?
- 37:06Speaker 2: I'll just leave it at that.
- 37:07Speaker 3: I don't.
- 37:08Speaker 1: I've had one actual factual conversation with Paul Feinbaum in
- 37:11Speaker 1: my life that was not on television, but that's not
- 37:13Speaker 1: my dude. OK, I'll just make this point. I forget
- 37:18Speaker 1: what year it was. I believe it was in the 1960s.
- 37:21Speaker 1: But Bud Wilkinson, the legendary head football coach at Oklahoma,
- 37:27Speaker 1: ran for the Senate in the 1960s and he lost.
- 37:33Speaker 1: He did not win that race. When Tom Osborne left
- 37:37Speaker 1: Nebraska after the 1997 season, he won a seat in
- 37:41Speaker 1: the House and then he tried to run for Senate
- 37:45Speaker 1: and he got his ass handed to him in the primary,
- 37:48Speaker 1: as I recall.
- 37:51Speaker 2: I'm saying all that to say.
- 37:54Speaker 1: There was a time where, yeah, sure, you coach some
- 37:59Speaker 1: football or something like that. But that didn't mean we
- 38:02Speaker 1: were going to give you like an important position because
- 38:06Speaker 1: that would be silly.
- 38:09Speaker 2: We were a proper country once. You know what I mean?
- 38:11Speaker 2: Not anymore.
- 38:13Speaker 3: People in Alabama saw a Democrat win once and then
- 38:17Speaker 3: we're going football coaches and sports commentators running for football.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Here's the thing. Tuberville didn't even coach Alabama. You understand
- 38:24Speaker 2: what I'm saying? Like he did not even coach Alabama.
- 38:27Speaker 2: We didn't always do this is all I'm saying.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Like the fact that we have reached a point where
- 38:34Speaker 1: it is a conceivable idea that Paul Feinbaum could be
- 38:38Speaker 1: be your senator.
- 38:39Speaker 2: And it is entirely on the basis of the fact
- 38:41Speaker 2: that people know who he is.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 38:44Speaker 2: So I got it.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Many of you know, my good friend, Matt Jones in Kentucky,
- 38:49Speaker 1: he considered running for Senate against Mitch McConnell. And the
- 38:54Speaker 1: people of the party wanted him to run. But the
- 38:57Speaker 1: biggest part of why they wanted him to run is
- 38:58Speaker 1: because he had the name recognition of a radio show. However,
- 39:02Speaker 1: Matt Jones and Paul Feinbaum are different people. Matt Jones
- 39:05Speaker 1: has a degree from Duke Law School. He is one
- 39:08Speaker 1: of the more brilliant people that I know. He traffics
- 39:10Speaker 1: in these spaces a little bit differently. I don't know
- 39:12Speaker 1: anything about what Paul Feinbaum thinks about anything at all.
- 39:16Speaker 6: Right.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Like if you're telling me the folks in Kentucky are.
- 39:18Speaker 1: Like, hey, Matt, you're really visible and you're probably the
- 39:21Speaker 1: most popular liberal that we have in this state whose
- 39:24Speaker 1: father had not previously been the governor.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Why don't you come on down? Yeah, I think that
- 39:28Speaker 2: makes sense.
- 39:29Speaker 5: Um.
- 39:30Speaker 1: I don't know anything that Paul thinks about anything in
- 39:33Speaker 1: this world other than Hank Williams Jr. that's it that's
- 39:36Speaker 1: that's the only place where I know anything about what
- 39:38Speaker 1: he thinks about stuff and somebody really signed up and
- 39:40Speaker 1: was like hey man what do you think about making
- 39:41Speaker 1: what do you think about that guy being the senator
- 39:43Speaker 1: does that sound like being a good idea what And
- 39:46Speaker 1: it gets back to the idea that my man Neil
- 39:49Speaker 1: Postman had in one of those books that the growth
- 39:52Speaker 1: of television, which was then expanded by the Internet, was
- 39:54Speaker 1: going to reach a point where in order to run
- 39:57Speaker 1: for political office, some other measure of fame was going
- 40:01Speaker 1: to become a prerequisite.
- 40:03Speaker 2: And what Paul.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Feinbaum has that not that many people in the state
- 40:06Speaker 1: of Alabama have is fame and preexisting name recognition.
- 40:13Speaker 2: But this is crazy talk. Hard stop.
- 40:17Speaker 3: All right, sticking with politics, Donald Trump says that the
- 40:20Speaker 3: White House UFC events will be held on June 14th,
- 40:24Speaker 3: right around his 80th birthday. Rumors of Conor McGregor and
- 40:28Speaker 3: John Jones participating in this. Beau, what do you think?
- 40:31Speaker 2: Conor McGregor, where is he from?
- 40:34Speaker 3: Ireland.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Okay, it ain't America.
- 40:37Speaker 3: Just, just, just.
- 40:39Speaker 2: What are we doing, man?
- 40:40Speaker 1: Have you seen those mock-ups that had it looking like
- 40:42Speaker 1: it was going to be.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Like sparklers and pyro and shit out there? Like, I just.
- 40:47Speaker 1: It wasn't that long ago that you couldn't get him
- 40:49Speaker 1: to talk about MMA on ESPN because it was seen
- 40:52Speaker 1: as being kind of beneath the dignity of the network.
- 40:55Speaker 2: They about to do this at the White House?
- 40:58Speaker 1: At the.
- 40:59Speaker 3: I was incorrect. It is his 80th birthday.
- 41:03Speaker 5: Oh.
- 41:04Speaker 2: I did not know that.
- 41:06Speaker 3: It's not only a UFC event. It's also a Trump
- 41:09Speaker 3: birthday party.
- 41:10Speaker 2: I'm just going to throw this out here and let
- 41:11Speaker 2: us move on because it just dawned on me.
- 41:14Speaker 4: Um.
- 41:18Speaker 1: How many January 6th jokes do you think that people
- 41:20Speaker 1: are going to be spitting out about that crowd? Finally,
- 41:24Speaker 1: we have come back to Washington, D.C.
- 41:31Speaker 3: All right. And finally, Taylor Swift's latest album, The Life
- 41:35Speaker 3: of a Showgirl, came out on Friday. It has met
- 41:38Speaker 3: mixed reviews online. Pitchfork gave the album a 5.9 out
- 41:42Speaker 3: of 10. Bo, have you listened to the new Taylor
- 41:45Speaker 3: Swift album?
- 41:46Speaker 2: Oh, hell no. I don't do that.
- 41:48Speaker 1: I don't listen to her music, so I don't say
- 41:49Speaker 1: anything judgmental about her music. It could be excellent. I
- 41:53Speaker 1: truly have no idea. I think there are two parts
- 41:55Speaker 1: of this that are interesting, right? I don't know if
- 41:57Speaker 1: you have been reading the reviews of this or other
- 41:59Speaker 1: things that have come up. But one of the things
- 42:02Speaker 1: is she's talking a lot about having sex.
- 42:06Speaker 3: With Travis Kelsey.
- 42:08Speaker 2: And that is not the best songwriting. that I have
- 42:12Speaker 2: ever heard, right?
- 42:14Speaker 1: Now, granted, my favorite is Prince, who is the best
- 42:17Speaker 1: at writing songs about sex anywhere in the... Prince says
- 42:21Speaker 1: things like, if I was anything else, I'd be the
- 42:23Speaker 1: water in your bath.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Like, this is the level of sex talk that I've
- 42:28Speaker 2: grown accustomed to on records.
- 42:31Speaker 1: She wrote a song called Wood and called that man
- 42:33Speaker 1: a redwood.
- 42:35Speaker 2: This is not.
- 42:37Speaker 2: This isn't wheelhouse songwriting stuff for her. And her fans.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Not enjoying it. I don't know if she like Adele,
- 42:46Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying? And like, if Adele say
- 42:48Speaker 1: she putting out a record, you need to call Rich
- 42:50Speaker 1: Paul to make sure he okay. Because at the very
- 42:52Speaker 1: least he's sleeping on the couch. She only, she don't
- 42:55Speaker 1: feel like singing when things is going good.
- 42:57Speaker 2: You must be crazy. That's just not, that's just not
- 42:59Speaker 2: how it goes.
- 43:00Speaker 1: But what I find interesting about this with her is
- 43:03Speaker 1: every great artist has a brick or two, right? Some
- 43:07Speaker 1: more than others. Some stretch it out for a while.
- 43:09Speaker 1: But like my guy Sturgill, that last Sturgill record, it's
- 43:12Speaker 1: a brick, guys. I think we can all go back
- 43:14Speaker 1: and recognize.
- 43:15Speaker 2: We don't want to go back and listen to it.
- 43:17Speaker 2: It's a brick.
- 43:18Speaker 1: We don't acknowledge bricks from stars as much because stars
- 43:21Speaker 1: are more invested, especially online, to saying how much they
- 43:24Speaker 1: love it. This is the first time I could think
- 43:26Speaker 1: of in a long time that a superstar's fans came
- 43:31Speaker 1: straight out and said, she hit us with a brick.
- 43:35Speaker 2: But that's okay. Everybody gets to give us a brick
- 43:39Speaker 2: every now and then. But this sounds like a brick.
- 43:42Speaker 3: Yeah, we have a very long runway with artists in
- 43:47Speaker 3: terms of, we just forget about albums. Yes.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Yeah, everybody's got one.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Like you go back and look at who your favorite is,
- 43:54Speaker 1: and you'd be like, I don't know about that one
- 43:56Speaker 1: right there, right? That one feels, that one, that was
- 44:00Speaker 1: not their best. You know what you say about those?
- 44:02Speaker 1: It's got some songs on it. right?
- 44:05Speaker 2: You start listing the songs individually.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Be like, oh, but wait a minute, wait a minute. Love,
- 44:10Speaker 1: 60 Has, with 2R and Love, and I Wish You Heaven.
- 44:13Speaker 2: And I Like Glam Slam. You like Glam Slam? Dancehall?
- 44:15Speaker 1: You don't like Dancehall? Like, that's the way that you
- 44:18Speaker 1: wind up having the discussion. And I don't think that
- 44:20Speaker 1: record was a brick, but it's got some songs on it.
- 44:22Speaker 3: That's what you got. Or you start saying, it's better
- 44:24Speaker 3: than people remember after a while.
- 44:26Speaker 1: For example, Outkast Idlewild, it is better than you remember,
- 44:30Speaker 1: but it was a brick in the moment, but It's
- 44:33Speaker 1: got Boris Brown. It's got Butron Angel. It's got some
- 44:37Speaker 1: songs on it. It's better than you remember. Maybe that's
- 44:41Speaker 1: what the Taylor fans will be saying about this one. Or, or, or,
- 44:46Speaker 1: maybe she'll be like, fine then, how about I just
- 44:47Speaker 1: go be in love? I already got a gozillion dollars.
- 44:50Speaker 1: What do I need y'all for?
- 44:51Speaker 2: Talk about a break.
- 44:58Speaker 3: All right. Bonus episode, bonus voicemails. Here's our first one.
- 45:02Speaker 7: What's up, Bo? This is Ant calling from the DMV.
- 45:07Speaker 7: I know you're a big Anderson Pack guy. I am too. Unfortunately,
- 45:12Speaker 7: I wasn't able to catch his tour last year. I
- 45:15Speaker 7: was sick the days he was in my area. But
- 45:18Speaker 7: I was able to catch his No Worries tour. And
- 45:23Speaker 7: I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't too familiar with the music,
- 45:27Speaker 7: but I went hoping he was going to do some
- 45:28Speaker 7: of the solo stuff and really enjoyed the show. So
- 45:31Speaker 7: just curious.
- 45:33Speaker 3: Are you a fan of No Worries?
- 45:36Speaker 7: And have you seen them once or the other show?
- 45:38Speaker 3: Keep doing.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Your thing. No and no. Look, I have tried the
- 45:46Speaker 2: No Worries stuff. At every turn, I try it.
- 45:49Speaker 1: And it always just sounds like a lesser version of Anderson.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Somebody got mad at me one time because I said
- 45:57Speaker 1: online about it. I'm like, all the stuff that he does,
- 46:01Speaker 1: that he does with other people, I don't like. They
- 46:04Speaker 1: all get in the way. I think that he is
- 46:08Speaker 1: one of the most talented, greatest performers, songwriter, sum total.
- 46:13Speaker 1: He is up there for me in a pantheonic air
- 46:16Speaker 1: of things, right? That's where I am. Silk Sonic is
- 46:20Speaker 1: a lesser version of him. The No Worry stuff is
- 46:23Speaker 1: a lesser version of him.
- 46:24Speaker 2: And then somebody got mad at me one.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Day online and was like, oh, so you're saying that
- 46:29Speaker 1: It's a problem because of the producer he's working with.
- 46:32Speaker 1: That is exactly what I'm saying. Like, what's crazy about
- 46:36Speaker 1: that thought? I don't like when he do stuff with
- 46:40Speaker 1: this dude. And it seems like he saves his real
- 46:43Speaker 1: heat for himself because he knows better than to waste
- 46:45Speaker 1: it on this cat.
- 46:47Speaker 2: So, yeah, no, no, no.
- 46:48Speaker 1: I went and saw him, me and my old buddy Sean,
- 46:51Speaker 1: went and saw them at the Hollywood Bowl last year.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Hey, man. This knowledge cat ain't going, no, no, no, no, no.
- 46:57Speaker 1: So y'all can have that. Like, I got one or
- 47:00Speaker 1: two of them on vinyl just because I support the homie.
- 47:02Speaker 2: You know what I mean? It's not even the homie.
- 47:03Speaker 2: I need to stop acting like I know that man.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Because I did introduce myself to him, and he was like, oh,
- 47:07Speaker 1: my God, a fan.
- 47:09Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh, shit. How do I get out
- 47:11Speaker 2: of this situation? Oh, man, it was a tough game.
- 47:14Speaker 2: It was a tough situation. Tough situation. But yeah, no, no, no.
- 47:16Speaker 2: You can have it.
- 47:17Speaker 1: No worries.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Not for me.
- 47:19Speaker 3: All right. Here's our next one.
- 47:20Speaker 2: What's good, Bomani, man?
- 47:22Speaker 5: This is Mike Z, man. I'm a big fan of
- 47:24Speaker 5: the show, been listening to it.
- 47:25Speaker 7: I can't even remember how long I've been listening to.
- 47:27Speaker 5: It, but I've been listening to it for a long time, man.
- 47:31Speaker 5: Shout out to the HBCUs.
- 47:32Speaker 7: I know you're a Clark Atlanta grad.
- 47:33Speaker 5: My sister works there. She's a professor. And I graduated
- 47:38Speaker 5: from Tuskegee. But I called to talk about this Alabama-Vanderbilt game, man.
- 47:43Speaker 5: It's crazy that this was even a game. But I
- 47:46Speaker 5: was watching my wife, and my wife was like, Kalen DeBoer,
- 47:51Speaker 5: the coach for Alabama, looks like he does not like
- 47:54Speaker 5: his job. And I had to tell her, look, I
- 47:58Speaker 5: went to school in Tuskegee, which, you know, is like
- 48:00Speaker 5: 15 minutes from Auburn and a couple hours from Tuscaloosa.
- 48:04Speaker 5: But I was like, the way they care about football
- 48:07Speaker 5: is ridiculous. I had a homeboy send me a video
- 48:10Speaker 5: from the Paul Firebomb show. And he said, and I quote,
- 48:13Speaker 5: using your words of money, and I quote, if Kalen
- 48:17Speaker 5: the Boy was on life support, I would unplug it
- 48:20Speaker 5: and charge my phone. And my homeboy was like, yo,
- 48:23Speaker 5: they really like this in Alabama?
- 48:25Speaker 3: And I was like, yes.
- 48:27Speaker 5: He was so serious about saying that. And so my wife, no,
- 48:32Speaker 5: he probably does not like his job. They de-vandy, but still.
- 48:36Speaker 5: What you think about that, bro? You think Kalen the
- 48:38Speaker 5: Boy like his job? Ha ha.
- 48:41Speaker 2: He knows the answer to this question. I have been
- 48:44Speaker 2: telling people this for the long... It is so much...
- 48:47Speaker 2: I guess he already knew it, but now his wife
- 48:48Speaker 2: is seeing it.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Everybody's starting to understand because people hit me a lot
- 48:52Speaker 1: and be like, oh, no, they'll cut Saban some slack. No,
- 48:55Speaker 1: they will not. Saban was like 10-2. Let me get
- 49:00Speaker 1: out of here before they burn my house down.
- 49:04Speaker 3: That's why Kalen DeBoer was looking miserable, because he was
- 49:06Speaker 3: thinking about what his life was going to be like
- 49:07Speaker 3: in four hours if he lost to Vanderbilt at home.
- 49:10Speaker 2: Yo, but how about this? It's not going to be
- 49:11Speaker 2: any better if you win. Nothing is good enough.
- 49:15Speaker 6: Nothing.
- 49:16Speaker 2: They're playing. There are a hundred something teams and they're.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Playing for a national title every single year. Nothing is
- 49:23Speaker 1: good enough. And this is the thing I meant to
- 49:25Speaker 1: mention when I was talking about the playoff on Monday
- 49:27Speaker 1: that I think is important and I don't think people recognize.
- 49:30Speaker 2: One thing the playoff did is it increased the number
- 49:33Speaker 2: of teams whose seasons end with a loss.
- 49:37Speaker 1: So the existence of a playoff means more chances to
- 49:41Speaker 1: win national championships and more chances to lose them if
- 49:44Speaker 1: you're Alabama.
- 49:45Speaker 3: They might have run Ryan Day off if he won
- 49:47Speaker 3: a national title last year. You lose to Michigan and
- 49:49Speaker 3: in the playoff?
- 49:50Speaker 1: Nah, I think John Cooper was allowed to go 2-10-1
- 49:55Speaker 1: against Michigan at that job.
- 49:56Speaker 2: That's not a hang-em-high job.
- 50:00Speaker 3: But Alabama, if they don't win a national title in
- 50:03Speaker 3: the next two years, he's out of there.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Yeah, but not even because they're going to fire him.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Because he's going to leave. That was the thing. Ray
- 50:10Speaker 2: Perkins left.
- 50:12Speaker 1: Bill Curry kind of got fired, but ultimately left. Dennis
- 50:16Speaker 1: Francione left. Like these guys look around and say, oh,
- 50:20Speaker 1: hell no.
- 50:21Speaker 2: And they just leave.
- 50:24Speaker 3: All right, here's our last one.
- 50:26Speaker 6: Hey, Bomani. This is Russell from Virginia. I've been listening
- 50:30Speaker 6: to the show since the Shannon days. And I'm calling
- 50:32Speaker 6: in with a story about somebody leaving their job in
- 50:34Speaker 6: a memorable way. So back in the summer of 2000,
- 50:39Speaker 6: on the weekend after my 16th birthday, I rode my
- 50:44Speaker 6: bike to the nearest shopping center and came away with
- 50:46Speaker 6: a job at a Quiznos Subs. And I ended up
- 50:49Speaker 6: working there about two years. And along with the $ 5. 65
- 50:53Speaker 6: an hour, I earned a lot of lessons about life.
- 50:58Speaker 6: The person I learned the most from was a guy
- 51:01Speaker 6: named Angelo. He was the general manager at the store,
- 51:04Speaker 6: and he was kind of a unique guy. He dealt
- 51:09Speaker 6: a little bit of weed out of the back of
- 51:10Speaker 6: the store. He worked high, which to that point in
- 51:13Speaker 6: my life was not a thing I realized you could do.
- 51:15Speaker 6: He ran a little amateur boxing club out in the
- 51:21Speaker 6: back of the store. He brought his taser into work
- 51:24Speaker 6: and showed me how that works. So, you know, I
- 51:27Speaker 6: learned a lot about people by spending that amount of
- 51:29Speaker 6: time with Angelo. But after about a year of working there,
- 51:33Speaker 6: I came in, and there was a new general manager,
- 51:36Speaker 6: and it turned out Angelo had been fired. And he
- 51:39Speaker 6: was a bit of a hothead, so I never really
- 51:41Speaker 6: did find out what happened, but I can't say I
- 51:43Speaker 6: was surprised. The thing that made it memorable was that
- 51:47Speaker 6: about a month later, I got a call on a
- 51:50Speaker 6: Friday morning, asked if I could come in for an
- 51:52Speaker 6: emergency shift. And when I got there, turned out the
- 51:56Speaker 6: owner of the store had been in the hospital all night.
- 52:00Speaker 6: And the reason he had been in the hospital all
- 52:02Speaker 6: night was because, like every other Thursday, when he left
- 52:05Speaker 6: the store with the cash take from the week so
- 52:09Speaker 6: that he could deposit it in the bank the next day,
- 52:11Speaker 6: he turned around to lock the door and close up.
- 52:15Speaker 6: And somebody stepped out from the shadows and tased him.
- 52:19Speaker 6: And when he woke up from that tasing, obviously the
- 52:23Speaker 6: $ 8, 000 that was in the cash bag was gone. And
- 52:27Speaker 6: that's all we really know for certain about that.
- 52:32Speaker 5: So anyway, thanks for the show.
- 52:33Speaker 6: Appreciate everything you do.
- 52:34Speaker 3: Have a good one.
- 52:36Speaker 2: First of all.
- 52:38Speaker 1: Well played all around in the setup of the story, right?
- 52:42Speaker 2: Top to bottom. I also love this way. I didn't
- 52:46Speaker 2: know you could, he used to come to work high.
- 52:48Speaker 1: I didn't know you could work high. That is a,
- 52:51Speaker 1: that is a turning point moment in the lives of
- 52:54Speaker 1: many of us. The first time you see somebody show
- 52:57Speaker 1: up to work high and then you realize.
- 52:58Speaker 2: Wait a minute, he's still over there getting the job done.
- 53:02Speaker 5: Huh?
- 53:03Speaker 2: Ain't that something?
- 53:05Speaker 1: So I love that he's as he said, like, I
- 53:08Speaker 1: feel like I know Angelo top to bottom the way
- 53:11Speaker 1: he fully stacked it up.
- 53:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 53:12Speaker 3: If you give us a two minute voicemail, it's got
- 53:14Speaker 3: to be a great story. And that was a rich
- 53:17Speaker 3: character building.
- 53:18Speaker 2: I also want to know all the things. How did
- 53:21Speaker 2: Angelo manage to get this job?
- 53:23Speaker 1: Like with all the things that he named him by Angelo,
- 53:25Speaker 1: if he was doing them as the general manager, he
- 53:27Speaker 1: was also doing those things when he was working on
- 53:30Speaker 1: the line.
- 53:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I want to I want I want to know
- 53:34Speaker 3: more about Angelo as well.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Angelo. Excuse me. Someone.
- 53:39Speaker 7: Someone.
- 53:41Speaker 3: At the same place where Angelo demonstrated how to use
- 53:43Speaker 3: the taser.
- 53:46Speaker 1: And what I love is that if Angelo did that,
- 53:50Speaker 1: he did it with his signature on purpose to dare you.
- 53:55Speaker 1: And apparently he came up. He had a he had
- 53:57Speaker 1: a great plan. Like I was watching Inside Man the
- 54:00Speaker 1: other day.
- 54:01Speaker 2: Great plan.
- 54:02Speaker 3: Great plan.
- 54:03Speaker 1: Great plan. Speaking of that, I've been watching a few
- 54:05Speaker 1: movies for whatever reason. And in our next episode, we're
- 54:08Speaker 1: going to have my buddy Howard Bryan on. We're going
- 54:09Speaker 1: to try something. You guys let us know what you
- 54:11Speaker 1: think about this, but we're going to do some movie talk.
- 54:13Speaker 1: We're going to talk about one battle after another, maybe
- 54:17Speaker 1: even a little bit about high and low and highest.
- 54:19Speaker 2: To lowest because Howard is a super movie dude. And
- 54:21Speaker 2: you know, I know how to talk. So, you know,
- 54:24Speaker 2: check it out. It should be good stuff.
- 54:26Speaker 1: But ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us
- 54:28Speaker 1: here on.
