Transcript
- 0:18Hello, SO 26. I'm joined by Owen Smith, fresh
- 0:25off the back of a 10 mile race around Dublin's finest Phoenix
- 0:28Park, Phoenix Park. Welcome to the show, bright and
- 0:32early Sunday morning. Yeah, it's a foggy morning here
- 0:35in Ireland, but I'm not clear. We actually work in the middle
- 0:39of a northern heat wave. Would you believe this week it
- 0:41was like 2325 humidity through the roof.
- 0:47So yeah, struggling a little bit, but it's better than the
- 0:51dark mornings and the rain that was coming pretty soon.
- 0:55No, it's good that you survive in the the tough summer over
- 0:58there. Guys, it is tough.
- 1:03And Dean Menzies also joins the show off the back of a 2 1/2
- 1:07hour long run this morning. How you feeling, Dean?
- 1:10Pretty well, yeah. Better for having done a long
- 1:14run in quite nice weather I think it was.
- 1:17We had a nice winters morning which is a bit different to what
- 1:20we've been experiencing, so no complaints here.
- 1:24How do we feel about the the changed recording time?
- 1:27I'm actually quite thankful because I reckon if we'd done
- 1:30the usual Sunday evening I would have been asleep.
- 1:32Like I don't know what's going on, but I had to have a nap
- 1:35before for the first time in a while.
- 1:39All that cycling catching up with you.
- 1:41Legs aren't cut out for it. Did you cycle for two and half
- 1:45hours? No, I've done 2 hours but not
- 1:49with them by myself. Yeah, yes.
- 1:52Because cycling around at a long run pace, I might as well just
- 1:56stayed in bed. Really.
- 1:57Might not, yeah. Yeah.
- 2:01He did look quite the there's a few comments from a few of the
- 2:04guys when he rocked up for coffee looking quite the the
- 2:06cyclists these days do. You have the lycra.
- 2:10No, no, I was. I wasn't sure where it's come
- 2:12from. Maybe I've just naturally slowly
- 2:15transitioned into the cyclist appearance, but it's not a
- 2:19conscious decision. I have the bike, that's what I
- 2:23have, and it's not even mine. That's what probably made them
- 2:26think, oh shit, here's a formal cyclist.
- 2:31But it was nice we we caught up for a coffee for the first time
- 2:34in like forever with Josh and Adam and Lucky Headsman Market.
- 2:39Must have been probably the first meet up there since you
- 2:42were there. Maybe Owen as well.
- 2:44Wow, really? Maybe, but maybe we just kept it
- 2:48a bit tight the circle, so now it's good to see you run.
- 2:51Well, I missed the coffee just on from there.
- 2:56The bakery. Yeah, so very good.
- 3:00And Josh was there fresh, fresh off the back of his transcend
- 3:04yesterday. Dean, did you go down and watch
- 3:06that, did you say or parts of it?
- 3:08Yeah, I did. I have you seen footage of like
- 3:11where it finishes? And so, yeah, I guess for
- 3:15listeners, it's sort of east of Perth.
- 3:17There's a heap of sort of rolling hills.
- 3:20We won't call them mountains, pretty sure they're not
- 3:22classified as mountains, but but it is quite hilly, like a hilly
- 3:26Ridge that runs along the East Coast, well east of the city.
- 3:31And there was a 65K ultra marathon that was on yesterday.
- 3:35I think there's a range of distances getting up to the
- 3:38furthest distance being 65K. And yeah, there's a few guys
- 3:41that we knew competing either in teams or as individuals.
- 3:44And a couple of my cousins who's just got into running more
- 3:48recently, they were both doing it as well.
- 3:49So we sort of house and I took the kids down down to the finish
- 3:52line and they're like face painting and a few things set up
- 3:55made it family friendly. So it's maybe like an hour, just
- 4:00a bit an hour and 10 maybe out of like from from where we are
- 4:04to get there. But yeah, it finishes on like a
- 4:07hilltop and they, the organizers do a great job of like making it
- 4:13like quite a picturesque sort of finish.
- 4:15It's in like a nice like, you know, Perth countryside and
- 4:18there's some beer like some food vans and you can grab a drink
- 4:23and yeah, it was really good. Yeah, cool.
- 4:25Shout out to Josh. Took a few scalps there.
- 4:28And Phil Gore is what's he the world record holder in the
- 4:31backyard? Ultra renowned trail runner,
- 4:35Ultra runner, Anyway. Yeah, yeah, He, that's right,
- 4:39that's right. So I think it was quite a deep
- 4:41men's field, I think, and there's a bit of prize money.
- 4:43So yeah, it's good. Sort of followed the live
- 4:46tracker. They have a live stream for it.
- 4:47And yeah, I think it's it's getting a bit of following.
- 4:50It should get more. It's really one of the best runs
- 4:52of run events in Perth, I reckon.
- 4:54But but yeah, normally see a few familiar faces out there.
- 4:58I think one of our listeners, Riley, he was not not there.
- 5:02I think he's supporting his mum who's doing it a bit tough at
- 5:04the minute, which obviously family always comes first.
- 5:07But yeah, thoughts with him. But it was nice to see a few
- 5:10familiar faces out there having a having a crack.
- 5:15Conscious for we might have some new listeners actually on the
- 5:17back of the interview with Jake Smith the other day.
- 5:20Bit of exposure over on the UK, so apologies for just rambling
- 5:26randomly at the start of the episode, but this is kind of
- 5:28what we tend to do before we get into the formalities.
- 5:33So did you enjoy listening to the interview?
- 5:36I, I very much enjoyed doing it. Like I was so appreciative of
- 5:40how like open and honest Jake was.
- 5:42And I had to actually grin and bear listening to my own voice
- 5:46to go back and listen to it, to take in everything that he said
- 5:49properly. Because you know, when you're
- 5:51doing it, you're like kind of always thinking about what to
- 5:53say next and stuff. And listening back, I was like,
- 5:56wow, he's got so much like wisdom to share.
- 5:59Yeah, I am. It wasn't how I I had a bit of
- 6:03an idea in my own head before I put put it in my ears as to what
- 6:07I think I would hear just because I'd heard him speak
- 6:09before. But it was sort of before.
- 6:12I think it was before his battle with Red S to be honest, because
- 6:15you know how like often people will be interviewed after a
- 6:19particular result. And I think it was around that
- 6:21COVID time where we couldn't really TuneIn to run it up or in
- 6:25Perth. It was like the lockdowns were
- 6:26pretty heavy and Europe sort of opened up before we did.
- 6:29So I remember him being at the 2021 half marathon world champs
- 6:33and being in the league group in amongst a whole heap of East
- 6:36Africans and he sort of stood out and ahead of them was sort
- 6:40of building up a bit of a head of steam in terms of running
- 6:43PBS. And I remember hearing him
- 6:45interviewed around that time and he sort of, and he spoke about
- 6:48it on this chat, just about some of the training he was doing
- 6:51early days, which was phenomenal.
- 6:52But as sort of he reflected on maybe not sustainable.
- 6:56And it's sort of like, yeah, just, I thought it was maybe
- 7:00just an extension on I, I've been injured or I'd had some
- 7:03troubles and I've sort of now back on the horse and just going
- 7:08full send again. But it really wasn't like that
- 7:11at all. It was sort of, yeah, I just
- 7:13found the whole conversation really interesting.
- 7:16He was so open and honest, which was really cool.
- 7:19And just, yeah, I don't know, it make it really makes you sort of
- 7:22put some running into perspective a little bit, right.
- 7:24Like in terms of just the, the impact it can have when you're
- 7:29sort of pushing and trying really hard and you sort of it's
- 7:33such a related such relatable conversation because we're on,
- 7:37we're all on here and a lot of the stuff we talk about is just
- 7:39trying to get a bit better. And he was doing that and all he
- 7:42was doing is sort of with the best intention of just trying to
- 7:45take his physical performance forward.
- 7:48And it really sort of the the impact of sort of fueling and
- 7:51underfueling sort of was that was detrimental to his health
- 7:55and well-being. You know, talking about some of
- 7:56those stats he was going through regarding his testosterone and
- 8:00iron and just his physical, you know, deconditioning because he
- 8:04was under fuelling was and and it was all just because he was
- 8:06trying to opt, you know, was to do with optimizing performance,
- 8:09which is very relatable. But yeah, all pretty serious and
- 8:13just really interesting insights that he shared.
- 8:16Yeah. And probably like, so relatable
- 8:18to almost anyone who runs because I'm sure we've all been
- 8:22there where you're thinking about like, what you're going to
- 8:24eat next and like whether you should eat it or whether you
- 8:27should not eat it. And maybe it makes you think
- 8:29differently, Like, well, are those thoughts normal?
- 8:31And yeah, it's just shed some interest and light on like how
- 8:35you think yourself as well now that he's kind of been through
- 8:38the process of being diagnosed with this, if you like, and
- 8:41going on the journey to learn about it.
- 8:44Yeah, I have sort of friends outside of running that are
- 8:47quick to comment on like choices around sort of under rating and
- 8:50it not making a lot of sense because they're sort of
- 8:53particularly like when it comes to them and performance, you
- 8:56need sort of strength. And like this general like under
- 9:01eating, particularly with some of the macros like protein and
- 9:03stuff like why you're not eating more of that sort of thing.
- 9:06And you sort of just dismiss a lot of it.
- 9:08And Once Upon a time, I think you sort of, I know when I was
- 9:10running a while ago, you wouldn't feel ahead of a long
- 9:14run or before running and you sort of was sort of felt like it
- 9:17was a bit tough in terms of just toughing it out.
- 9:19And it's sort of a lot of these things just not really the right
- 9:22approach and a bit of a consistent theme between what
- 9:26Izzy was talking about with fuelling, what Jake was talking
- 9:28and then ran to Japan. Obviously, like is it scranted
- 9:31Japan? Like he's obviously quite the
- 9:33advocate and maybe his MMA background meant that he was he
- 9:36didn't have the same sort of predispositions that maybe
- 9:39someone that just comes into running and and focus on running
- 9:42performance has in terms of fuel.
- 9:44But yeah, it was a super cool chat and just seems like a
- 9:47really lovely guy as well. Yes.
- 9:50Yeah, we better actually just give a little how Reading done
- 9:54this weekend because I'm pretty sure all the Reading ultras
- 9:57ultra fans are now listening to us.
- 9:59So Reading unfortunately lost 21 to AFC Wimbledon yesterday.
- 10:04So and not a great started league but I'm sure they'll come
- 10:08back strong. As crowd, she would say, hashtag
- 10:13back stronger. Transitioning into the Strava
- 10:21group then before we get into things, I feel like we're going
- 10:25to have to start omitting Jake from this run to Japan top every
- 10:30week. Isn't HE255K Like what the hell?
- 10:34I think someone should just try and run A300K week just to make
- 10:38him come second. You know, we'd run 310 the next
- 10:41week. I I responded to one of his
- 10:46stories the other day done like a 60 odd Ki think I just put
- 10:50like a flame emoji or like the clapping reaction or whatever.
- 10:54And he was like, yeah, thanks. Got to make sure I'm top of your
- 10:57leaderboard, haven't I? It's impressive now did you see
- 11:02he put up a picture of where he was in his Like I think it was
- 11:05episode 2. I was YouTube the dorm place.
- 11:09He put a picture that was so funny.
- 11:12I saw you the comment. Yeah, I.
- 11:14Appreciated it. That's funny.
- 11:18It's still up. There's a lot of good.
- 11:20I mean, obviously every Sunday I love that he releases consistent
- 11:23content. I think that's like important,
- 11:26right? Like that Sunday afternoon
- 11:27release of his videos and there's a lot of good videos,
- 11:31but that one and the not that you ever want to see someone go
- 11:35to hospital, but it's more his reactions to his condition that
- 11:38will. They'll stay with me forever, I
- 11:40reckon. So maybe this week then we'll
- 11:46speak about the person who's in second because if anyones
- 11:51familiar and like enjoys marathon training and running
- 11:55marathons, then you may have heard the head of a coach called
- 11:58Renato Canova. And now this guy coaches a very
- 12:02select number of professional athletes.
- 12:06In addition to that, he coaches the famous Norwegian Christian
- 12:11Ulrichsen and he's in second on 168 K.
- 12:14So if anyone is intrigued about Canova's philosophies and his
- 12:18training and literally if you go into Christian's Strava, you'll
- 12:21see all the sessions that he's doing there in his in his lead
- 12:24up to Berlin Marathon. And he's kind of putting it all
- 12:27in the line because he's run 168K this week.
- 12:31And also if you follow him on Instagram is he's sharing some
- 12:36of the things that Ronaldo is actually like saying to him and
- 12:38stuff. And I'm actually finding some of
- 12:40the quotes like quite insightful in terms of you almost are
- 12:44getting like that access to Ronaldo because he's telling you
- 12:47what he's telling an athlete who he coaches as he closes in on
- 12:51race day and stuff. Yeah, I think that's only six
- 12:55days, right, Because you're he's Norwegian.
- 12:58So they've not started their Sunday.
- 13:00So I don't think you'll quite catch Jake, but he's doing
- 13:04pretty well. Yeah, true.
- 13:05I know RAF is like had conversations with Renato over
- 13:10time, like I think when he was in Kenya sat down with him and
- 13:14recorded a bit of a like a 2 hour conversation with him,
- 13:19which he sort of shared with us in the past, which is really
- 13:21cool, cool insights. But I know sort of when it comes
- 13:25to the specific phase of some of the marathon work we do, he'll
- 13:29sort of leverage some of the concepts and some of the
- 13:33learnings he's had from chatting with, chatting with him
- 13:36regarding sort of, you know, the Super blocks or the the sort of
- 13:40special workouts and sort of the sort of.
- 13:43And I was chatting about this with Adam on the long run today,
- 13:45Like before I sort of started being coached by Frontrunner,
- 13:49the ability to sort of predetermine your race
- 13:52performance. It was a bit more gut feeling
- 13:55intuition, whereas nowadays what we'll do is say 10 days out or
- 13:59two or three weeks out, depending on the distance is
- 14:03like a a precursor, which is sort of serving two few
- 14:08purposes, I suppose. Like these marathon specific
- 14:11workouts, they sort of mentally dial you into the race.
- 14:14You sort of do a lot of the preparatory work like the race,
- 14:16you sort of suffer similar to the race.
- 14:18You get pretty close to the fire.
- 14:20And then also, so in terms of that mental prep is really good
- 14:23for you, but then it also has like a physical benefit.
- 14:26It gives you a bit of an uptick because it's quite an acute
- 14:28stimulus as you're sort of sharpening before the race.
- 14:32But then importantly for me, like I used to go into races and
- 14:35come out of them a bit surprised as to what my performance was
- 14:39when I maybe thought I was in different shape to what I raced.
- 14:42Whereas a lot of these workouts will really give you some, if
- 14:46you run them as per the effort that you should be, you'll get a
- 14:50really good insight into where your fitness is actually at.
- 14:52So you shouldn't be too far off. It sort of really helps you sort
- 14:55of dial in what your race plan should be.
- 14:57And I know some of the sort of super block or the special sort
- 15:00of workouts that Renato does that a highly marathon specific,
- 15:04like Once Upon a time people would look at that and be like,
- 15:06that's silly, like that's you're doing too much.
- 15:09Whereas now and the shoes and fuelling and those sorts of
- 15:12things certainly help. But it's certainly become much
- 15:14more commonplace for a lot of people are doing them.
- 15:17But yeah, I don't know. So I'm, yeah, it's a lot of fun
- 15:20sort of following Christian's journey, right?
- 15:23And seeing someone who's much more relatable do the training
- 15:26of what Renato would prescribe to someone.
- 15:29And then also sort of the challenges that that Christian
- 15:32has around his top end ceiling is much more relatable.
- 15:35Like he's not Renata's not being given some genetic Lee gifted
- 15:40superhuman who's training full time, you know.
- 15:43And so this is it's such a it's such a cool insight.
- 15:46And then all the the strides and the speed work and then the like
- 15:50long specific stuff. And then like the steady runs,
- 15:53like the fat Max runs that he's doing, like, yeah, all super
- 15:56interesting and yeah, super cool follow.
- 16:02I don't know much about Chris. Oh, so like what?
- 16:04What's his times like? What's his marathon PB?
- 16:07I think he's from like 221 maybe about a while ago and I think
- 16:12maybe he ran 223 ish. Perhaps he was a couple minutes.
- 16:16He ran London in April and Jordan Donnelly was coaching him
- 16:22in the lead up to them. But it's sort of gone through a
- 16:25bit of a spell where like his PBS, he struggled to run a PB,
- 16:28sort of went through a bit of a rut.
- 16:30And then Jordan started coaching him and he ran like 10K half
- 16:34marathon PBS. And then he had this really
- 16:36short build into London, But I think he spent a bit of time in
- 16:39Kenya and got a bit cooked. And so it sort of didn't quite
- 16:42reflect his full fitness. I don't think the marathon time,
- 16:45but he but he otherwise is, you know, if you're in PB shape for
- 16:48the shorter distances, in theory, if you get the if you
- 16:51have enough lead time for a marathon block, you hopefully
- 16:54can make that work. But yeah.
- 16:57So is he going for sub 220? All going well, yeah, that's
- 17:01the, that's the sort of, yeah. He's all in on trying to go sub
- 17:04220, yeah. That's.
- 17:06His life, that's his life goal I think.
- 17:08Like he jokes saying that Renato is like the most passionate
- 17:13person about running, but perhaps besides him it would
- 17:16actually be Chris. So like when you hear him speak,
- 17:18he fucking loves it doesn't he? And I think his bio even says
- 17:22like striving for two 1959 or something.
- 17:26Yeah, yeah. Subscribe to the Inside Running
- 17:29podcast. And they do like a monthly
- 17:31episode with him, Brady and they Yeah, I find them.
- 17:37Yeah, very. I find those episodes like
- 17:39hilarious and him in particular. He's very funny all.
- 17:43Right. Then lastly, before we talk
- 17:45about the results, I won't say too much more, but just to let
- 17:49yous know more so that we have a special delivery on the way
- 17:53ahead of the Clubhouse launch, which we're going to go ahead
- 17:56with in the week leading up to Sydney.
- 17:59Because I mean like this is very much trial and error.
- 18:02Like it's something that we want to do because we think that it
- 18:05has like real value to it, but also being conscious like it's
- 18:09only going to work if everyone else gets involved in it.
- 18:13So get involved and we'll see what happens, but feel like it's
- 18:17got some good potential right then running results.
- 18:21How can we not start with the Diamond League from last night?
- 18:25Firstly, the women's 800 meters. Now this was odd because it
- 18:28wasn't even on the official Diamond League card.
- 18:31So once you turn the stream on this race that already been run
- 18:35and I don't about use, but I was like, oh, do I like search the
- 18:38results like whilst it's happening or do I wait for the
- 18:42broadcast to come on now and that they're like show it again.
- 18:45And I was like, oh, do I want to like watch it live or like do I
- 18:49want to spoil the results? But anyway, I managed to hold
- 18:52off and I watched it live. So it was won by Keely
- 18:56Hodgkinson on a return to racing.
- 18:58First race since the Olympic final last year in a 15474.
- 19:02Second group was Lillian Odira 15652 and 3rd or Atali now
- 19:0915676. So how did you experience
- 19:13watching this? Did you get to see it live?
- 19:16And so I didn't even, I thought this was on like Saturday night.
- 19:22So when you put in the group chat about Keely.
- 19:25So basically just for some context, we have a little group
- 19:28chat and Ryan was like, ah, Keely's bag or something.
- 19:32Just give her the gold medal now.
- 19:34And I was like, ah, I don't think so.
- 19:36She had she's had such an inconsistent build and I think
- 19:40it's going to be a lot closer, but you're the race had already
- 19:43been run and like she had already won on the set.
- 19:46I like a new world lead. So I was like, oh shit, now
- 19:50she's back. Just actually give her the gold
- 19:52medal. She's so good.
- 19:56They didn't broadcast that race run.
- 19:58That was like before the live stream.
- 20:00Yeah, but they did, they did show it once the because I I've
- 20:07got the well, maybe I don't say this because you suppose
- 20:10technically not allowed them, but I watched it on BBC iPlayer
- 20:14anyway and she went through in 56 I think it was.
- 20:20So what's that? If you double 56 that's going to
- 20:22be a 152. But that's technically how they
- 20:25run the 8 hundreds, isn't it? They go through the 1st 400 a
- 20:28little bit quicker and just try and cling on, but gradually they
- 20:32slip a little. But yeah, she won by a margin of
- 20:35like almost 2 seconds. And you're looking like we can't
- 20:39not mention the fact that Claudia Hollingsworth has won
- 20:43and run a new national record. She finished fifth in 15767 and
- 20:49Abby Caldwell finished right behind her in 6th 157.7.
- 20:53So incredibly close. And that was actually the second
- 20:56fastest Australian all time. But as you're watching this
- 21:00race, like Keely's genuinely that far off the front that it
- 21:04looks like a different race and like 157 is incredibly fast.
- 21:09It's mad what she can do to that field like.
- 21:12On the same return to to training program as Owen,
- 21:16obviously. I wish.
- 21:22Goes to show a bit of time off is not always the the worst
- 21:25thing I mean. It's dangerous.
- 21:28Like your body's so like recovered and so fresh and ready
- 21:32to go. Like, yeah, I wouldn't put a
- 21:35limit. And what she could run this year
- 21:36now, like she's around 1:54 and like when's the world's in a
- 21:40couple of weeks? Like she's fresh as.
- 21:42Well, I see and actually she's on the start list for is it
- 21:45Lausanne in the week Wednesday or something?
- 21:48She's on the start list there again.
- 21:49So it's like 154 that's mad because first race back, even if
- 21:54you are like incredibly fit, you expect a little bit of
- 21:57roughness, like maybe the last like 3040 meters struggle a
- 22:01little bit. And even if she had a worn but
- 22:04it was like 156 or 157 or finished second or third and
- 22:09like been in the race for a while but maybe got past late or
- 22:12something, you're like, OK, yeah, she's in a good place.
- 22:14But to do that, it's mad. So the world record is 153.28,
- 22:22set by some Czechoslovakian woman back in 1983.
- 22:26I'm actually not won't comment on her image, but yeah, so she's
- 22:33she's close. Well, I think that world record
- 22:36is held in the same regard as the 3000 meter world record that
- 22:41they seemingly openly, openly like say was part of the Chinese
- 22:46open regime. But we're going to get to that
- 22:49in a minute actually. Well, we'll talk about it now.
- 22:52Any more comments on the 800 before we move on?
- 22:54Wait, have you seen what the person looked up?
- 22:58Look up that person. The first thing that comes up.
- 23:00Yeah, she beat you in a tank. She beat you in an arm wrestle,
- 23:04Owen. Freaking out animal.
- 23:08Yeah. Wow.
- 23:13There's a footage, I think of that race, I think on YouTube,
- 23:16isn't it? Is it?
- 23:17Yeah, I've seen it, Sammy, recently.
- 23:19Like people can look however they want these days and that's
- 23:23fine. But genuinely, when I first seen
- 23:25it, I was thinking it's like a man's race.
- 23:27It's got to be. Have you seen her quads on her
- 23:29like shoulders and upper body? It's obscene.
- 23:33Sure I did. But this thing I don't get.
- 23:36I was going to mention this when we talked about this 3000.
- 23:39So it can overlap into it nicely now.
- 23:40But like, why? If we seemingly know that these
- 23:45records are from like dopam regimes, the Czechoslovakia one
- 23:48and the Chinese one or whatever, like why do we still like hold
- 23:52them up and honour them? It's going to be the same with
- 23:54this Kippy Aegon. 1 Kippy Aegon. Definitely not Kippy Aegon.
- 24:00Not again. Well, like in in 1020 years,
- 24:06that record will probably still stand.
- 24:08But whenever it's referenced, because women are maybe running
- 24:12like 212 to 11, getting closer to something, it'll always be Oh
- 24:16yeah, but then she was she was guilty for drugs just after she
- 24:19ran it, wasn't she? Why can't we delete?
- 24:21Do they think she just started taking the drugs after she ran
- 24:25209? It doesn't make sense.
- 24:31No it doesn't. Sorry, I was distracted by
- 24:33Ryan's coconut water, but minerals, calories got
- 24:37everything. But it's a joke.
- 24:43No, I don't. I don't know.
- 24:45I like, I suppose like you can't really.
- 24:48It gets very Gray if you start to rub out records like the
- 24:51presumably those some records could be clean and then someone
- 24:54chose to do something. So you can't.
- 24:56It's very difficult to give a blanket ban to say if you got
- 24:58rubbed out once that none of your times count.
- 25:01Like how far back do you go? I think if you're cheating
- 25:05you're wrong athlete. Just fuck out.
- 25:06Like just fuck off. Genuinely.
- 25:08None of your records stand, all your results are gone.
- 25:11Give all your money back, I don't care.
- 25:13But but for example, there was an Australian athlete I've I
- 25:17have to track down her name forgotten, but she got she got
- 25:22served like a four year doping ban reduced to 2:00 just because
- 25:25of her honesty and transparency when it came to it.
- 25:28But she she literally just took pre workout and was not aware of
- 25:32a particular ingredient, which even that ingredient in there is
- 25:35like it's got multiple names. So she wasn't like someone that
- 25:39sort of participated in some national doping protocol and is
- 25:44completely rotten. So yeah.
- 25:46So it's, I don't know. So can you you like?
- 25:48Is that different? It's your job.
- 25:51It's. Hard on that.
- 25:52It's your job. All these supplements, you don't
- 25:54take a supplement that's not tested like it's it's your job.
- 25:57Generally, Fred Curly, like you hit 3 whereabouts failures, like
- 26:01it's your job to show up to this stuff.
- 26:03It's like not showing up to work.
- 26:05Well, I was reading about it on the back of this Shelby Houlihan
- 26:08thing the other week because the whole what, what was it?
- 26:12She had the blue burrito. I've always heard this.
- 26:15And it like kind of intrigued me.
- 26:17Like, well, there must be something more to it than that.
- 26:20So obviously she claims that the burrito was contaminated with
- 26:23whatever this substance was. And supposedly in pork or
- 26:27whatever meat it is, it can get in there, but it's then on the
- 26:32athlete to prove how the meat or the source has been
- 26:36contaminated. So like, she would have had to
- 26:38go back to that food truck and get them to contact their
- 26:42supplier and get them to get samples of that meat to prove
- 26:47that the substance was in like the actual original source.
- 26:51And if she hadn't done that, then maybe it would have stood
- 26:54up in court. So that's why the excuses kind
- 26:58of laughed at a little bit because she didn't actually do
- 27:01anything with it. It was more just like, let's
- 27:03make it as Gray as we can and kind of try and find a way out.
- 27:09So like for those that for that supplement, just to tie it back
- 27:12to what that Australian might have taken there, that would
- 27:14have been evident that it was in all the samples and the bottles
- 27:19and everything of it. But the whole area is grey,
- 27:24isn't it? It's obviously like the the
- 27:26regulations that are put in place.
- 27:28You can't just delete people's times from all of history.
- 27:31However, if they changed it and said if you ever caught dope and
- 27:35then you basically sacrifice out everything you've ever done,
- 27:38then it stands up differently. Maybe that's what we have to
- 27:41petition for. But the levels that you want
- 27:43shall be had was like two or three times higher than what
- 27:47would have been from eating a contaminated food.
- 27:50Yeah, but doesn't make sense. But only two or three times and
- 27:56but it could have been 20 or 200 times like if she was actually
- 28:00using it for performance enhancing, you know, like we've
- 28:02seen with the check Nagasic one, she had like 200 times the legal
- 28:07amount, didn't she? So that was part of a defence,
- 28:09like I'm only just over the threshold for contamination.
- 28:14Yeah, but if you're doing it right, you're not like juicing
- 28:16yourself up to the gills. You're only doing a little bit.
- 28:19If you're going to do it, you might as well get juiced up to
- 28:22the girls. Yeah, I don't like it.
- 28:27But no, to be fair, I don't think we should just because
- 28:30I'm, I'm making a joke about it there.
- 28:31I don't think it's something that like we should laugh about
- 28:33when we're speaking about it because I mean, to us, we're
- 28:37putting it out to an audience that we're comfortable with, but
- 28:40you don't know who you're going to influence.
- 28:42Like if younger athletes and stuff are listening to it, like,
- 28:46I mean, we have always taken it seriously and always spoken
- 28:48about it in a negative light, so.
- 28:51Don't do drugs any sort of. Leading is leading is on to the
- 28:55women's 3000 meters where there was a long standing world record
- 28:59from 1993 from a Chinese lady Faith KP Aegon was attacking
- 29:04that and she ran 807 for first one by a huge margin. 834 and
- 29:122nd from the Keena Aimbor and another Ethiopian lady was third
- 29:17in 835 followed by the Australian of Rose Davis in 4th
- 29:21836 just off her personal best of 835.
- 29:25Lauren Ryan in 6th 837. Georgia Griffiths in 7th, 8:40.
- 29:31Again, for freaking fake EPA going to be 27 seconds ahead of
- 29:36the person in second is just mind blowing is it not?
- 29:42It's. Crazy.
- 29:43She had two paces. The first one was, I can't think
- 29:48of a first name, but that hair to Clacker, you know Joe
- 29:50Clacker's partner. And she went through AKI, think
- 29:54they went through 242. And then Jess Hall was the
- 29:58second pacer. So she was there for 2K243 and
- 30:02then it left KP Aegon with another maybe 242 to run by
- 30:06herself and for the 800 to 400 to go lap.
- 30:11She slowed a little and I think she ran a 65 maybe, and that
- 30:15meant that she had a 62 to run the record and she closed in a
- 30:1963. Yeah, she's both different.
- 30:23Good run from the Aussies now. Yeah, I think as I said, Rose
- 30:26Davis was just shy of the PB, but Lauren Ryan's puts her up to
- 30:30maybe 5th on the all time list I think.
- 30:34And then Georgia who was finished 7th last night, she's
- 30:38the actual record holder seen 824.
- 30:41Like when you look at those results, she would if she had to
- 30:45run that race. She finished the second there to
- 30:47keep you a gun. I mean, obviously it's if buts
- 30:49and maybes, but it puts it into some sort of context.
- 30:53Men's 1500 was won by Yard Nagus in 333.19.
- 30:59Second and third was Timothy Cheriot of Kenya and Navi Nordas
- 31:03of Norway. Now further down the field, here
- 31:07is maybe where the race is also interesting because you've got
- 31:11Josh Howie, Cam Myers, Hobbs Kessler, Ollie Hoare.
- 31:14So there's all sorts of different dynamics going on.
- 31:16It's kind of like the Formula One, you know, on Drive to
- 31:19survive when they like follow those mid table team stories.
- 31:24What like when you watch the race you don't necessarily pick
- 31:26up on because you're thinking about who's on pole and Max
- 31:30versus bloody Lando or something and you don't realize that like
- 31:34Aston Martin are in a massive battle with Haas for 7th in the
- 31:38constructors. That's like what's going on with
- 31:42Josh Howey and Hobbs Kesler and Cam Myers and Ollie Hall because
- 31:47they're all competing for their inter country places on the
- 31:50teams. Does that result do Josh?
- 31:56Are we any good for making the final?
- 31:59I think he might be OK for the final anyway.
- 32:01So the Goose needed points for the final.
- 32:03So him winning is obviously good and you said you haven't seen
- 32:08it, but the way in which you won the race kind of went out.
- 32:11The pacer was like that quick and Ollie Hall went with him and
- 32:15he was literally the only one. The rest of the field, they
- 32:19maybe gap them by like 20 or 30 meters and the goose was in that
- 32:23chasing pack and like, OK, change of tactics.
- 32:26He's maybe learnt his lesson that just getting on the pace
- 32:30and getting past isn't working for him all the time.
- 32:33And then they like slow. Once the patent stepped off, it
- 32:36was just so obvious how like isolated Ollie Hall was.
- 32:40But you're thinking there's only one lap to go, maybe you can
- 32:42hold on. But they swallowed them up and
- 32:45he didn't like he didn't die straight away, settled into like
- 32:48third in the pack. And then obviously as they've
- 32:50ripped off the last bend, a few of them have just kicked down.
- 32:55But the the interesting thing is that Hobbs Kessler, his main
- 33:00race is the 1500, I think, isn't it?
- 33:03And he's just been beaten by Howie, whose main race is the
- 33:06800. So that doesn't look good for
- 33:08Kessler. Kessler hasn't qualified for
- 33:11Where else has he? No.
- 33:17That's yeah, wow. The the whole, this whole
- 33:19concept of getting a wild card in the final I think is really
- 33:22good for athletics. Like I just feel like like drama
- 33:25and excitement. I think Jake Smith might have
- 33:29mentioned it when you were chatting with him, right?
- 33:31Like just around the because British athletics and so with
- 33:35Australian athletics has a degree of subjectivity when it
- 33:37comes to selection. And like people run these times
- 33:42and like you when you finish some of these races and you
- 33:47think you've done enough, it's you only think you've done
- 33:49enough. There's no like pure joy
- 33:51crossing the finish line thinking you've qualified for
- 33:53something in based on the Australian and British selection
- 33:57policy. Whereas for the American racing,
- 34:02like whilst it may unfortunately leave some people out because
- 34:05they're unwell or injured just at the trials, people as soon as
- 34:09you cross the finish line, like it creates such drama and
- 34:12excitement to follow. And it means that people like as
- 34:15fans, you can really get excited for people.
- 34:18And so it's the same with like this Diamond League final.
- 34:20Like, it's not like the Diamond League final otherwise.
- 34:23Like, does it really otherwise crescendo much like, I don't
- 34:26know, it's sort of is it, how different is it to some of the
- 34:29other like Diamond League races where they're, well, pace?
- 34:31Like for me, I'm like maybe looking forward to Monaco just
- 34:34as much because, you know, it's notoriously quick.
- 34:37Whereas like with this sort of added element, like you're sort
- 34:39of watching those three American guys racing each other.
- 34:43Yeah, I don't know. I just find it quite exciting to
- 34:46watch, which I think it's a cool initiative.
- 34:48Yeah, it definitely helps like keep some interest there because
- 34:52if, if that Diamond League final wasn't a thing, then it'd
- 34:54probably just be a bit of a lull now until Tokyo, wouldn't it?
- 34:57But it just keeps that space there for a few more weeks and
- 35:01helps like kind of the way in which you kind of get to know
- 35:05people and find people who you like to support and equally
- 35:10dislike is I haven't like a storyline to follow and stuff,
- 35:15isn't it? So this just helps part of that.
- 35:18So like for example, with Ollie Hall, we know that kind of his
- 35:22space is up for grabs on the team.
- 35:24So then you're looking at that saying, did that do any do him
- 35:27any favours or did it do him any harm?
- 35:30Who's the competitors going up against for the space?
- 35:34Jude Thomas? When's he next racing and.
- 35:38The next Diamond League on Wednesday, is there a 1500 in
- 35:41that as well or a mile? Do we know?
- 35:43There, there is and the field or is it consists of Oh no, there's
- 35:50a 5000 meters and an 800 meters for the men.
- 35:54Is set in that 5K. Nah, but Jack Rayner and Jude
- 35:59Thomas are. So Jude has the 1500 standard,
- 36:03but is going is in this 5K, correct?
- 36:05Yeah. And at the moment, is Jude above
- 36:08Ollie or how does that work? It's like a selectors discretion
- 36:12trace. I'm not sure based on times
- 36:16who's ramp. I think Ollie's run faster.
- 36:18In fact, he ran a fast one early in the season.
- 36:21So for the 1500 Cam Myers is selected and is there someone
- 36:26else selected? Is Adam Spencer now who finished
- 36:291-2 in the in Perth at that time?
- 36:35Yeah, I just remember Cam winning.
- 36:37I thought normally it's just if you win nationals and have the
- 36:39standard, I think that goes along and you, I think there's
- 36:42like some sort of caveat around you had to run a couple of
- 36:45domestic races or something like that, but I thought it was only
- 36:49the winner. It's not like British athletics
- 36:51where it's top two in some of those races.
- 36:53It's like top one, OK. Yeah, so on the road too, it's
- 36:56got Cam, Ollie and Jude. There's been like the three
- 36:59people in the quota. So, but that doesn't make sense.
- 37:02Why? Why it's so like up in the air
- 37:04over who's going to go, Ollie or Jude?
- 37:07So Adam Spencer isn't even there.
- 37:09He is he's, he's got the entry standard but he's down as like
- 37:11the fourth person for Australia at the minute.
- 37:16Either because he's he didn't. Win nationals this year, did he?
- 37:18No, but Cam didn't win either. Cam on the Oh no, he did didn't.
- 37:24He Cam won that. Yeah.
- 37:25And they didn't win the five case.
- 37:26Yeah, OK. But yeah, interesting
- 37:30nevertheless. So next race at the Diamond
- 37:33League was the women's 1500 meters, which was won by Gudaf
- 37:37Sagai in a solo run. Again, she won in 350 from
- 37:42Beatrice to Beth in a 354, and 3rd was Georgia Hunter Bell in
- 37:47356. Then you've got Nikki Hilts.
- 37:51Hey, Lou, Linden Hall, Sarah Healey, Sarah Billings, amongst
- 37:56others, obviously all throughout the rest of the field.
- 38:00So I think the guy was going for the world record again here.
- 38:05I think it's a 348 maybe and she split 800 meters in 159.
- 38:11So like when you think we think about the women's 800 meters, a
- 38:15lot of those girls, ladies are running one 58157.
- 38:20And so guys split 159 just a second or two slower and still
- 38:25had almost double the distance to still run.
- 38:28She's like a warrior, to be fair, isn't she?
- 38:30It's a guy who runs so angry. She like she's such an angry
- 38:34face when she's running. Yeah, I don't know what it is
- 38:38about F form. Is it maybe like how high she
- 38:41picks her knees up or something? But she just looks a little bit
- 38:44uncomfortable, obviously. Clearly bloody works.
- 38:48Absolutely. She's a machine.
- 38:50When you compare it to Kippy Aegon or Jess Hall, I was
- 38:53looking at those during the race and like Kippy Aegon's like just
- 38:56so tight and compact and just looks like ultra efficient.
- 38:59And Jess Hall's got like this sublime, like everything
- 39:03symmetrical about air stride like runs for her toes.
- 39:06That's the guys just like stomping around the place.
- 39:11She bet looks smooth as well, and she runs.
- 39:14Yes, it's Shabbat is the 5000 meter world record holder, I
- 39:18think, isn't she? So to put almost 5 seconds into
- 39:21her, I know it's completely different discipline like, but
- 39:26nevertheless. So that rounds off the Diamond
- 39:30League meets. Then there was a couple of meets
- 39:32throughout Europe during the week as paired this time of the
- 39:35year as well. So we'll quickly whiz through
- 39:37these. There was one in Sweden which we
- 39:39missed last week because it happened just after our
- 39:41recording to the Folk Slam Grand Prix.
- 39:44Solid tuner which Andreas Olmgren, the Swedish athlete.
- 39:49Fat European 5000 meter record holder.
- 39:52He won 3000 meters in 731, beating his own national record
- 39:57by three seconds. When I was having a look at
- 40:00this, he has the 6th fastest ever times by a Swede, so his
- 40:06national record isn't in doubt at the minute.
- 40:10Second was Seth O'Donnell from YouTube Diaries a few weeks ago.
- 40:15If you've tuned into previous episodes, you'll know that we're
- 40:18big fans of Seth. He ran 734.
- 40:21So that's important because Seth is over in Europe chasing the
- 40:265000 meter standard. And I think this 734 shows that
- 40:32he's potentially not that he's going to do it, but that he's
- 40:36not going to be 1,000,000 miles off when he has a fair crack.
- 40:40Isn't it crazy his improvement over the last like 2 years?
- 40:45Like when I arrived in Australia in 2023, like I heard of him but
- 40:50like he wasn't like the top of the top.
- 40:53And now two years on, he's coming second by three seconds
- 40:57to arguably one of the best like runners in Europe if not the
- 41:02world. Andrews Algren.
- 41:03Like it's crazy what can happen in two years.
- 41:06So much of that time as well he's been sit well, seemingly
- 41:09from Instagram, like coaching himself.
- 41:12Because I remember he was, he was sponsored by Hoka and then
- 41:16he left them or got dropped or something happened there.
- 41:20And yeah, he's just been like, it's the credit to him.
- 41:24It's a lot of hard work. Well then he was with that
- 41:27brand. Who was it where he had to wear
- 41:29the the vest inside out? One running yeah, then.
- 41:33He was with them as well. Wasn't it?
- 41:34Yeah. And now he's like, and I got
- 41:36late living it up in Europe, living the dream.
- 41:39Then I'm pretty sure he did actually race at 5000 later in
- 41:42the week as well, but it was bizarrely like he won't it.
- 41:48It was in Finland. He won in 1318 and then second
- 41:53was 1340. Like what?
- 41:55Why is it doing them races? It doesn't make sense.
- 41:58This person who finished seventh round 1607 and Seth's, they're
- 42:02trying to chase the standards. But like, he's the type of
- 42:06person that could like pop out like a 13 low in a race like
- 42:10that. But like you say, we've just
- 42:12spoken about the 5000 entries for the Diamond League coming
- 42:15up, like Jack Rain and Dude Thomas have got one.
- 42:18Steph obviously can't get in and he's like a fucker.
- 42:21I'll do any race, like just get me on the start line and to run
- 42:251318 by yourself. Like shit, I'll be scared to see
- 42:29what he did do if he's in one of these Diamond League races.
- 42:33But like, that's the thing I don't like sort of about like,
- 42:37running's a lot of politics, like fair play, like Jude Thomas
- 42:40is a top, top runner, but like, his season's best in the 5K is
- 42:441328, where Seth has run faster than that.
- 42:48But yeah, Seth can't get in to like a Diamond League 5K where
- 42:52he probably could run a 13 low. It's like who you know, really,
- 42:57which isn't nice. I think did he run thirteen O 9
- 42:59or something like that on the indoors maybe?
- 43:02Jude Thomas But yeah, certainly helps who you're connected to.
- 43:06Yeah. This is very much theory and
- 43:09hypothetically speaking as well, but you wouldn't even be
- 43:11surprised if like the other athletes were almost not wanting
- 43:17Seth or whichever other example, it might be their competitors to
- 43:21get into these races because, well, I mean, it makes sense.
- 43:24It's certainly natural. Like if you've got a spot and
- 43:26someone else is trying to take that spot from you, you'd be
- 43:29glad if they weren't getting into good races.
- 43:31But when you look at it from the athlete who's wanting at least
- 43:35like an honest go at it, that's it seems like a little bit
- 43:38unfair, doesn't it? But that's where your profile
- 43:42and all that comes into it. Yeah, like, so Seth raced, you
- 43:46know, everyone was at Nationals in Perth, right?
- 43:49And he beat everyone. And now because of the way the
- 43:53rules are, he sort of needs to run a particular time and you
- 43:57sort of know there's limited opportunity to run that time.
- 44:00He's sort of head to The time is a bit rough, but
- 44:14yeah, it's not not not the fairest in that regard.
- 44:18The window closes a week today anyway, so let's see what what
- 44:23you can come up with between now and then.
- 44:25Gee whiz, SO1 is just one week to go 24th is it when it closes?
- 44:29Yeah. Squeaky bomb time.
- 44:32Yeah, I imagine a few people will be refreshing that road to
- 44:36Tokyo and start lists and stuff like that thinking, Oh no.
- 44:41So then there's meet in Hungary on Tuesday night as well, just
- 44:451500 meters for the women, which is won by Georgia Griffith in
- 44:48the 358. Also on there was Erin Wallace
- 44:52of GB as she finished 10th, but she's around 401.1 which means
- 44:57she now has the standard. Also in the field was Rebei
- 45:02Walcott Nolan of GB and she ran 35989 to get the standard 2.
- 45:08So they're the women who finished third and 4th at
- 45:10nationals, which as we have discussed means they don't have
- 45:15an auto spot because to get an auto spot you need to be top 2
- 45:19and have the standard. But then kind of like the next
- 45:22set of criteria below that is if you have the standard, then
- 45:27they'll consider. So you would imagine now these
- 45:30girls are looking pretty good because they've got themselves
- 45:32the standard and finished third and 4th.
- 45:34There was a men's 800 meters. The guy who won was a Kenyan
- 45:38guy, Chep Quony in 14296. And importantly for Owen, his
- 45:43countrymen mark English stalwart, the man who's won
- 45:47nationals for a decade, run a national record.
- 45:51He's not slowing down. That's 40. 3.
- 45:55Yeah, that's fast. He's not young, this guy.
- 45:58He's no spring chicken. It's just his second name is
- 46:04terrible. It gets me every time.
- 46:08I know he is 32 like and he's running PVS in the 800 of all
- 46:13distances like he's never moved up.
- 46:15He's 800m runner like, but yeah, 143 like that's moving.
- 46:19He's getting up there. So we'll, I assume we'll be
- 46:22seeing him on the start line in Tokyo, Yeah.
- 46:25Absolutely. And another person who we might
- 46:28see as well because of this race is Ben Patterson, which you may
- 46:31be familiar with, the ginger British lad.
- 46:35I think he got a bronze medal at one of the major champs in the
- 46:38past couple of years. So he's run 1:44 to get the
- 46:42standard here. And that's interesting because
- 46:46he's ran, either he hasn't run much at all or he's ran like
- 46:49crap for prior to this. So to come and do that out the
- 46:53blue will be a big relief for him.
- 46:55So Mark English could be lining up against someone half his age
- 46:59in the heats of the world champs.
- 47:01Against the American kid. Yeah.
- 47:04That is notes in that. Could be his dad.
- 47:10There was a men's 3000 meters which was won by Kenyon Kipsang
- 47:14in 733. Also in this field was Darren
- 47:19Mcelhenney of Ireland 735.16, Jackson Sharp of Australia 73642
- 47:26and Stewie Mcswain. Sad to see back in 14th 743, I
- 47:34mean, you don't know what's going on, but Stewie kind of had
- 47:37that bit of a break, didn't he? And then kind of got back into
- 47:40training and chose to go back to Europe.
- 47:43So you're thinking, oh, maybe he's going to have like a bit of
- 47:45a a longer season or like a later season.
- 47:49And he just, he hasn't really, his results haven't really
- 47:51picked up from when he's first returned after training.
- 47:56Has he ever ran further down a 5K Stewie?
- 47:59Yeah. He's run the Great North half.
- 48:02I think that would probably be this far as he went.
- 48:04What did he run? Rally got tripped but.
- 48:08What did he run in the half? I don't think it went to plan.
- 48:12I think it may be 64 minutes, but like he, he was the former
- 48:16national record holder for the 10K Aussie record holder on
- 48:20track. So I think he's run, I think
- 48:23he's run in the 27 twenties for 10K, Yeah, I think he's one's
- 48:28that I picked before. So Ken, Ken, get it done over
- 48:33the longer distance. So I think Islands 5000 meter
- 48:36team Owen is made-up of Darren Mcelhenney, Cosgren and Brian
- 48:40Fay. Yeah, I don't know.
- 48:43Well wouldn't put a part past Andrew with doubling, but to be
- 48:47honest, he probably will double. He'll do the 5:15.
- 48:52Yeah, like that's like, then again, like they're so like
- 48:55you're sort of so far off them Kenyans and even the Americans
- 48:58being able to run like 1245, like a 13 minute 5K for them
- 49:02guys is like slow. Like you're 15 seconds slower
- 49:06than what you're able to run. So like, it's just a doddle, but
- 49:09it's good to have three going. But who?
- 49:12Which was in that Grand Slam brace?
- 49:15Which? Who was the Irishman that won
- 49:17one of those? Andrew Koskin.
- 49:19Yeah. And like so.
- 49:21So the hope is that it's tactical, right?
- 49:23Because then those guys come into the.
- 49:25Come into play, Yeah, because all them have serious kicks.
- 49:27Yeah, yeah. So that's the probably the the
- 49:30hope, same as like Cole Hawker, right?
- 49:32Like he's if it's running, if it's just 1240 sort of pace from
- 49:36the gun, he probably just, I don't know, be probably get
- 49:39squeezed out. But if it's 13 minutes,
- 49:42everyone's in a lot of trouble. And it could be even slower
- 49:45because it's meant to be really, really warm in Tokyo.
- 49:48So although lads are doing like heat training and all that sort
- 49:50of stuff. So I doubt it will be like super
- 49:53fast, especially if you've rounds like you want to conserve
- 49:56as much energy as possible. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:58And a few of those guys would be doubling either 15-5 or five 10.
- 50:02That's the lost stress on the body.
- 50:04Just the 10 is just a straight final isn't it?
- 50:06But for the five they have to do heats.
- 50:09I think back in the day they used to have heats in the 10K
- 50:11like I remember seeing some old YouTube clips but imagine that
- 50:15like running a 10K of the heats to get into the final.
- 50:21They would they would have been absolute like jogs for 5K
- 50:25wouldn't they? Moving on to the I feel like we
- 50:29have to mention this now when when he does it, but do plan to
- 50:32set a new world record in that myth as well. 6.29 winning by
- 50:38almost 30 seconds. We'll set another 100 grand
- 50:42richer. Yeah, Cha.
- 50:44Ching. Cheat code.
- 50:47So that's his third one of the year, I think.
- 50:49And when he's been asked about it, he said, like, I like a
- 50:52man's got to make a living. He is dead right?
- 50:56Yeah. You need to be careful around
- 50:58bringing work chat into this. But like part of your job is
- 51:01sort of reading rules and applying them and sort of, you
- 51:05know, he sort of has the rules available to him around this is
- 51:09the rule and this is the incentive he gets if he breaks,
- 51:12you know, the world record. So I don't know, I just think
- 51:17well played, right? There you go, you've you've
- 51:20found your pathway into the running industry for a career.
- 51:24You can be like a contract interpreter I.
- 51:28Think it's a pretty unique circumstance where someone can
- 51:31like long jump, just jump one centimetre further than the
- 51:34current world record. Like it's probably that or high
- 51:38jump that is the but you probably don't have the scope
- 51:42even in high jump. Like the pole vault is probably
- 51:44so unique that it's like every centimetre.
- 51:47Like you can sort of toggle unless they start moving it in
- 51:51millimetres in the high jump. That's probably what you need to
- 51:54advocate for if you're the best in the world.
- 51:57And the fact that you can, you literally just stop once you do
- 52:00it as well, that you could have jumps in hand and you're like,
- 52:03Nah, I'll save that to the next meet.
- 52:05Yeah. For reference to Mcswain ran
- 52:096252 in 2021 in the Great Half. Didn't make it up.
- 52:19I think that's the running results done then.
- 52:22Fellas. Spent enough time in Europe.
- 52:24Tell us about what's been happening in Ireland and in
- 52:28Australia. So Monday, just the regular
- 52:33commutes. Oh no.
- 52:35So regular run into the office and then Monday night Hales and
- 52:39I actually went to have you heard of ABC conversations?
- 52:44Have you heard of come across that?
- 52:46No at all, No, it's like one of the, the Ogs, I suppose, in
- 52:50terms of podcasting. So like I think that they're
- 52:54sort of celebrating the I think it's hosted by Richard Fidler or
- 52:59he was like one of the founding hosts and they interview people
- 53:04for about an hour or so, like quite remarkable people.
- 53:08And it's, they're sort of, they were doing a bit of a a roadshow
- 53:12ABC conversations hosts were, and doing like a bit of a get to
- 53:16know the hosts and a bit of like a snapshot of the 20 years of of
- 53:21hosting these ABC conversations. So yeah, they basically
- 53:25interview people from all all different walks of life.
- 53:29And they're not necessarily completely sort of well versed
- 53:36at podcasting, but they have really interesting stories to
- 53:39tell. So they're quite extraordinary
- 53:41people that otherwise maybe wouldn't necessarily get their
- 53:44stories heard. And as, and they sort of touched
- 53:47on some great examples of that and they brought up like like a
- 53:51story that I really enjoyed, like Peter Bell, who he's
- 53:55originally from South Korean. He was adopted by some
- 53:57Australian parent, he by his Australian parents when they
- 54:01were doing like a missionary trip.
- 54:03And he came back and grew up in in Perth and went on to become
- 54:09one of like the most sort of decorated Fremantle Docker AFL
- 54:13players. He's now like AI think a lawyer
- 54:15by trade. And he's a breakfast radio host,
- 54:18but has quite an interesting story.
- 54:19And you sort of a bit like even like the Jake Smith interview,
- 54:22you go in sort of thinking the conversation might be about race
- 54:26performance and you learn all these really amazing things
- 54:28about someone. And I think I'm sort of just
- 54:30going through some of that sort of stuff.
- 54:31So it was really cool. Anyway, So what that meant was I
- 54:34just did a quick 20 minute run after work before heading to
- 54:37there and a few strides my sort of pelvis or my like sports
- 54:46hernia sort of was not aggravating things too much.
- 54:50It was maybe like a one out of 10, which I was pretty happy
- 54:52with. Tuesday I ran into the office
- 54:54and then I went to the track and then because I sort of deloaded
- 54:57a bit and I've done a couple of sharper workouts.
- 54:59I didn't realize till I got there, but we had these
- 55:02quarters. So you do a 2K threshold to
- 55:05begin with, which was a bit slower than what I normally
- 55:09would do it in. Yeah, threshold.
- 55:11I was going to say a threshold or being dragged around by some
- 55:15of the faster voice. So, so Max was starting his
- 55:19first week at EY. So he, he wasn't, wasn't there,
- 55:24but Luke was there. And Luke I think must have done
- 55:27it in about 6 minutes. He was 100 meters ahead of me.
- 55:30And then I maybe I normally do it in 6-10, but I was with a bit
- 55:34of a group and sort of knew what was to come.
- 55:37So I don't know if you're quite calling it sandbagging, but I
- 55:39probably didn't quite go as hard.
- 55:42So 618 for my threshold. So probably thereabouts.
- 55:46What are you? Yeah, sort of three or 9 pace,
- 55:49but. It's weird, isn't it?
- 55:50If that was on a concrete path, it probably feels like legit
- 55:53threshold because it's on the track.
- 55:55You probably felt like you're jogging.
- 55:57There was about 8 or 10 of us all in a group and it just felt
- 56:00like I was yeah, tripping over feet because you sort of feel
- 56:03like you're cruising. Yeah, jog lap.
- 56:06And then it was Deke's quarters. So Deke's quarters is for those
- 56:10unaware, is 8 by 400 meters at your sort of VO2 pace.
- 56:15If you can with a 200 meter float and the float itself, you
- 56:19can sort of lean a bit into the float, like you don't have to
- 56:22sort of back off. And it's a continuous 4.8 K run.
- 56:26And people sometimes sort of suggest is a reasonable
- 56:29predictor of a 5K. So whilst you're running 200
- 56:32meters less, you might get a good insight into a 5K fitness
- 56:35is at. I love the way you say you can
- 56:38lean into the 200 float as if most people are going to be
- 56:41choosing to run harder during their like inadvertent commerce
- 56:44recovery. Like people wouldn't be more
- 56:47inclined to lean out of that float.
- 56:51I suppose, I suppose for me at the track, if I have an
- 56:55opportunity where there's a active recovery versus a static
- 56:58recovery, I'll try and keep those recoveries on us to stop
- 57:02the young guys from going too hard on the efforts by default,
- 57:06just because I'm biased towards, you know, being a bit slower and
- 57:09older. But but yeah, I the hip was
- 57:14fine. Like I could feel it a little
- 57:15bit, but it didn't feel too bad. And I think that's might, might
- 57:19be I did 1418 for Deke. So Luke got away from me for a
- 57:23little bit of it and I wheeled him back in and then got a
- 57:26little bit away from him late. But yeah, I sort of went around
- 57:30probably 69 seconds for the 400 meters and 38 seconds for the
- 57:35200 meter float. So say 255 pace for the on, 305
- 57:41pace for the off or thereabouts. Shit, 1418 and so even like the
- 57:46workout all up is 4800 meters, isn't it?
- 57:49Yeah. So like even if you just
- 57:51finished off that last 200 meters in 35, which would have
- 57:55been like just not going for it massively but not backing off
- 57:59completely, what you're going to run there 1443 or something?
- 58:05Yeah, yeah. Is it 18304050535353?
- 58:12Yeah. So yeah, not, not too bad.
- 58:15Like yeah, I felt all right. Look, that's the best I've, I've
- 58:18done a few in the 1420s before, but to be honest, that was a
- 58:22while ago. So I was pretty happy, happy
- 58:24with that. And it wasn't like wasn't
- 58:27completely on my haunches, which is, which is good.
- 58:31But that was probably about as good as it got like cooled down
- 58:33after that. Could feel it a bit.
- 58:35But then on Wednesday I was pretty sore and sort of felt
- 58:38like I'd gone backwards a bit when I saw the physio and yeah,
- 58:43it was sort of maybe like jogging on it two to three out
- 58:46of 10 on Wednesday. And then on Thursday I had the
- 58:50double threshold, so morning threshold, which I did from
- 58:53home. I got it done, but it was
- 58:57probably like 2 to 3 out of 10 pain in the morning.
- 59:00And then I had in the afternoon it was just three by 8 minutes
- 59:03at that sort of, you know, yeah, LT1 type intensity, running a
- 59:08bit to feel more than heart rate.
- 59:10I think I lost my heart rate monitor during the week or
- 59:12misplaced it. And then the afternoon I had
- 59:14four by one minute on 4 by sorry, 5 by 4 minutes at
- 59:19threshold, one minute float and I was pretty Hanford.
- 59:21I just couldn't quite, it was sort of hurting.
- 59:24So I couldn't really, I felt good, but I couldn't really get,
- 59:29I couldn't, yeah, I just couldn't really push.
- 59:30It was just hurting too much and ended up only doing 4, which I
- 59:33was a bit annoyed about, but it was what it was.
- 59:37Friday just my 2 commutes and then Saturday was 3 by 45
- 59:44seconds quicker. 15 second flow no 45 seconds on off times, 3
- 59:49into 2 by 15 minutes at threshold slash tempo the 2 1/2
- 59:54minute float and then another 3 by 45 seconds and I
- 59:57intentionally just took the 45 seconds.
- 59:59Pretty comfy. Where was this one?
- 1:00:03Just around Lake Munger, so just a flat, flat, sort of.
- 1:00:06It's more of like a threshold workout than a tempo workout on
- 1:00:09the Saturday. And this is probably a really
- 1:00:12stupid question, So what is the difference between tempo and
- 1:00:16threshold? Is tempo faster?
- 1:00:19When we no, so when we talk about it or when we when it's
- 1:00:23used in training because I think it depends on the group perhaps,
- 1:00:26but we'll say tempo is like 7 out of 10 and then threshold is
- 1:00:308 out of 10 I suppose. So tempo is sort of that it's
- 1:00:34often around like marathon pace or marathon effort for me, I
- 1:00:37suppose. So you know, like when we're
- 1:00:40doing those continuous efforts in Kings Park, like I would say
- 1:00:43when we're not sort of leaning right into them or even like
- 1:00:45when we used to do say those 40 minute continuous runs around
- 1:00:48Kings Park, you're not quite getting up to what you would on
- 1:00:53the Thursday. On those Thursday workouts,
- 1:00:55we're doing 8 by AK or like this four and four minutes on, one
- 1:01:00minute off. You're sort of getting up to
- 1:01:02that Lt. 2 or maybe slightly above clearing lat tape going
- 1:01:05again, whereas those continuous runs at 7 out of 10.
- 1:01:08So the tempo effort, we refer to it as.
- 1:01:11Take a comfy hand. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:01:15So I tried to sort of sit around that for the Tempo Saturday
- 1:01:19tempo run, but yeah, again, I was just really, I was just
- 1:01:23really quite sore, which is annoying.
- 1:01:26There's probably like four or five out of 10.
- 1:01:27So I was like, this is fucking heading backwards, this thing.
- 1:01:30You know when you seen the physio on was it Wednesday you
- 1:01:33said what sort of guidance did you get from them about the rest
- 1:01:36of your week and stuff? We just sort of agreed that
- 1:01:39because the last time it flared up was Saturday doing the hills
- 1:01:42on the downhill. So we're like we'll stay away
- 1:01:44from that. And then I was still pretty
- 1:01:46encouraged by how everything went Monday, Sunday, Monday,
- 1:01:49Tuesday. Like I did 2 hours last Sunday
- 1:01:50it didn't really hurt and then Tuesday I'd just whacked a good
- 1:01:53workout. So I think I was just hoping and
- 1:01:55I'm like, I'm a bit sore, but I'm hoping it's going to now
- 1:01:57settle down on Thursday and just didn't quite settle down.
- 1:02:01Like it was just everything was trending in a good direction
- 1:02:03until it, it wasn't on Thursday and it just was sore and it was
- 1:02:09still sore yesterday. Like it's a little bit sore
- 1:02:12today, but it's the jogging doesn't seem to hurt anywhere
- 1:02:17near the sort of, you know, higher intensity stuff.
- 1:02:19So yeah, I did 2 hours 15 today, like 30 KS.
- 1:02:25And to be honest, it wouldn't have been more than like 1 to 1
- 1:02:281/2 out of 10 pain. So like pretty aware of it but
- 1:02:32nothing too bad. I think the problem was on
- 1:02:35Thursday and Saturday 1 was like you're doing like an hour worth
- 1:02:39of running like of intervals. Like you do half an hour of
- 1:02:43intervals in the morning and then you're doing maybe 25 to 30
- 1:02:46minutes of intervals again in the afternoon.
- 1:02:48So it's just a lot. And then it just didn't calm
- 1:02:51down by like Saturday and Saturday it's like 40 minutes
- 1:02:53worth of intervals. So it's sort of for 1015 minutes
- 1:02:56is fine, but then it just gets worse.
- 1:02:58And it's sort of my pubic bone that's causing a bit of the
- 1:03:00discomfort now. So it's sort of the whole area
- 1:03:04is a bit irritated I think. So the plan now sort of be just
- 1:03:08to back off a bit of the intensity because it's certainly
- 1:03:11it's not liking it. And so I'll just probably stick
- 1:03:13to jogging and steady running for a little.
- 1:03:15Bit yeah, I was going to say like, would you better off sort
- 1:03:18of like taking, let's say, a down two weeks because obviously
- 1:03:22you're going to start building now soon for Valencia.
- 1:03:25It's just like knocking this on the head, getting it better and
- 1:03:28then doing a big build because you don't really want to be
- 1:03:31doing a build when any bit of intensity is sort of like just
- 1:03:35aggravating it that little bit. Yeah, I think if I was at the
- 1:03:37end of a build, I'd find just a way to manage it, but right now
- 1:03:40that probably doesn't make a lot of sense to push it.
- 1:03:42So if I can keep jogging and maybe I'll see how it goes
- 1:03:46Tuesday, if steady running feels all right, then I'll just sort
- 1:03:49of stick to the areas where I feel like it's trending
- 1:03:53positively and it just avoid some of the hardest stuff.
- 1:03:56So we'll see how we'll see where I'm at come Saturday, I think.
- 1:04:00But yeah, certainly no. Or maybe even Thursday, but
- 1:04:03certainly no track on the Tuesday.
- 1:04:04I'll just do it if I can do a steady run and see how it see
- 1:04:08how I feel, yeah. And down two weeks could do you
- 1:04:12the world of good. It could I love, I love
- 1:04:16downtime. So I'm excited for for that.
- 1:04:19Yeah, as much as you don't want to drop volume and intensity,
- 1:04:23the last thing you want to be doing is sat here in October or
- 1:04:26November and saying like, yeah, it was a 2 out of 10, three out
- 1:04:28of 10. Like you just want to fix it
- 1:04:31completely now. If it's two out of 10.
- 1:04:33Someone who's fucking 14 weeks into a down period.
- 1:04:37No, that's right. Like, yeah, I'll ignore niggles,
- 1:04:41but when it gets sort of beyond the niggle, you sort of got to
- 1:04:43take it, take it a bit serious. I think so.
- 1:04:46And. What would the if like you
- 1:04:48wanted to escalate it? Would you get it scanned or like
- 1:04:50what would that process look like?
- 1:04:52Yeah. So I think if it's still bugging
- 1:04:54me, I'll go get a scan and then we can go from there.
- 1:04:57I think is the way forward. But we'll see.
- 1:05:00We'll see how it goes. It's sort of not the first time
- 1:05:02I felt this pain. It's just the worst it's been.
- 1:05:04Yeah, like a scan takes the guesswork out of it.
- 1:05:08Like, yeah, you'll know what the issue is.
- 1:05:10So that might. Be.
- 1:05:11Yeah, yeah. The only issue is like, so when
- 1:05:14I was chatting to Steve about it, he's basically like 80% of
- 1:05:17sports hernias won't appear on a scan.
- 1:05:20So I've got a scan on this before and nothing showed up.
- 1:05:23And so then I'm like beauty. And then I just went back to
- 1:05:26training. And so unfortunately I settled.
- 1:05:30She's a beauty. I love that scan.
- 1:05:33And then so I was like, all right, fine.
- 1:05:36Little did I know I hadn't seen Steve.
- 1:05:38I just got the findings from the sports doc And then I was like,
- 1:05:40well, that's all I need to know. It's not a problem, It's
- 1:05:43placebo. And off I ran.
- 1:05:45Little did I know is probably the pain was maybe more real
- 1:05:48than what I gave it credit for. So I can get a scam potentially
- 1:05:51given it's quite, it's worth the worst it's been.
- 1:05:56But yeah, that would be what I do, albeit I think I sort of
- 1:05:59know two things, like there's certain tests.
- 1:06:02So every time I see Steve, he'll go through like a series of
- 1:06:06functional tests. And there's a couple of tests in
- 1:06:08particular that really aggravate the injury, the main injury.
- 1:06:13And then there's another test you'll do, which is like you're
- 1:06:15like testing your pubic bone or testing for like pubic
- 1:06:19synthesis. And that's that's registering a
- 1:06:22positive result as well, which is not ideal.
- 1:06:25So there's sort of, I think I've got a bit of a grasp as to what
- 1:06:29my 2 problems are and what are the two pieces of pain I need to
- 1:06:34not let get out of control. Like I have an idea of what
- 1:06:37doesn't feel right. And if it continues to get hot
- 1:06:41like worse as I'm running, I think that's probably something
- 1:06:45like I shouldn't ignore, but the hope is it's an acute flare up
- 1:06:48that'll settle down. I think if I keep running on it,
- 1:06:51I'm probably going to make it worse, and then I'm probably in
- 1:06:54a bit of trouble at some point. Good, because like coming on
- 1:06:57here and talking about your week and your pain thresholds and
- 1:07:00stuff forces you to reflect on like how it actually feels,
- 1:07:03doesn't it? Because like, you can lie to
- 1:07:05yourself whilst you're out running or after training being
- 1:07:07like, no, it's not as bad as whatever, but but then when you
- 1:07:11come to actually say it out loud, you feel guilty if you're
- 1:07:15like physically lying to yourself knowingly, don't you?
- 1:07:18So it's a good little tool for that.
- 1:07:20Yeah, definitely. You're just talking through your
- 1:07:23training week, generally talking through the choices you make.
- 1:07:27It sort of forces you to be accountable, but again, you sort
- 1:07:31of don't want to. It's hard, right?
- 1:07:32You don't want to overreact, but yet at the same time you've got
- 1:07:35to do the right thing as well. But yeah, Congrats, your week
- 1:07:37was good enough for 5th on the easy double straw of a club
- 1:07:40leaderboard. How many calendars?
- 1:07:43145, Right? Well, let's start my week.
- 1:07:50So my week started after that turn.
- 1:07:53Training log. Yeah, I'm prepared this week.
- 1:07:59My week started after A30K long run on the Sunday.
- 1:08:03So Monday morning I got out for 40 minutes and then I done 10/10
- 1:08:08seconds strides after, which felt all right.
- 1:08:11And then during work I had my 30 minute nap.
- 1:08:16And then it's like a sensory room.
- 1:08:20So it's got all these like really cool toys and I don't
- 1:08:25like, you know, it's just got like like wobble board and then
- 1:08:29like a therapy couch. So I just like showing the
- 1:08:31therapy couch. Sounds like you.
- 1:08:33Work for like a company out of the future or something?
- 1:08:36And then the room, the annoying thing is the room beside it,
- 1:08:39there's like a pool table and a ping pong table.
- 1:08:42So I put my I have to put my earplugs in, so I just block
- 1:08:45them out. But then the evening run was a
- 1:08:5240 minute run and I made a big mistake of not fueling
- 1:08:58correctly. So after the so big Sunday and
- 1:09:03like the running the Monday morning, I should have like
- 1:09:06loaded. But yeah, I think I had for
- 1:09:09lunch a slice of bread and like 3 eggs and that just.
- 1:09:13And then I had like 2 rice cakes at like 3:00 and then I'd run at
- 1:09:18like 6. So yeah, that just didn't cut
- 1:09:20it. And I think I made it like 15
- 1:09:23minutes through the run and I felt like light headed and weak
- 1:09:28and I just wasn't enjoyable. I felt so, so bad.
- 1:09:32So luckily I passed the one shop in my area.
- 1:09:36So I went in, asked for two Jelly snakes and sort of made my
- 1:09:41way home because like I want to be closer to home if I do like
- 1:09:46totally like cave. But no, the Jelly snakes got me
- 1:09:49through it. I sort of got that sugar rush.
- 1:09:51And yeah, that was another 8K for the Monday evening.
- 1:09:55But I've learned a valuable lesson to eat food.
- 1:09:59Did you did you need to pay for the lolly snakes or were they
- 1:10:02they were on the House or how did that work?
- 1:10:04I'm tight. What was that?
- 1:10:05It was $0.50 each, so a euro for two of them.
- 1:10:11Big long Jelly snakes. Killer Pythons does.
- 1:10:14That translate? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:16Inflation is crazy. And what would they used to been
- 1:10:19like $0.10 back in the day? It'd.
- 1:10:21Be like 1015 cent. Yeah, huh.
- 1:10:24It's terrible. So this is the Fred hers, they
- 1:10:28used to have like printed 20P on the packet I think it was and
- 1:10:31now they're like a quid or something.
- 1:10:33I know they're a quid under half the size.
- 1:10:36It's terrible. Irish inflation got out of
- 1:10:39control at one period of time, didn't it?
- 1:10:41Or was it the the opposite? No guys, Ireland is possibly the
- 1:10:45most expensive country in Europe.
- 1:10:46Like you actually don't realize until you get out of the place
- 1:10:49of how expensive it is. It's crazy.
- 1:10:51The shoes sound awful. Pardon.
- 1:10:54Shoe prices sound awful. Pair of super shoes pair like
- 1:10:57alpha flies could be €310 which is quick Marts 553 Australian
- 1:11:07dollars yeah so if any is our planned trip back to Europe I'll
- 1:11:13put. In the shopping for context for
- 1:11:16the European based listeners, a pair of vapor flies at what 330
- 1:11:21Aussie dollars and all flies 370 I think full price.
- 1:11:25I think are off flies 370 I think.
- 1:11:29Yeah, Anyway, shoes are a rob. That's why I'm sort of a Nike
- 1:11:34kid now because close to me is a Nike outlet.
- 1:11:37Well, not close to me. It's a 40 minute drive but so I
- 1:11:39just pick up all the old shoes there.
- 1:11:42Do they even get because I know they're Nike outlet by mine.
- 1:11:46It would never ever get like vape flies outflies in.
- 1:11:49No, no, for a reason. That's why I don't have any
- 1:11:51racing shoes. I'd have to like cash out and
- 1:11:55like spend 300 odd euro on a pair of like ASIC, Medispeed,
- 1:12:00Paris or Tokyo, whatever you call them.
- 1:12:02So yeah, Tuesday was a double threshold day.
- 1:12:07So in the morning I had 4 by 7 minutes off a 3 minute jog.
- 1:12:13So the reps were I don't just an average pace per kilometer.
- 1:12:17Rep one was 320, Rep 2 was 3/24, Rep 3 was 3/19 and Rep 4 was
- 1:12:23318. So yeah, super controlled,
- 1:12:26feeling good. And I actually done my lactate
- 1:12:28as well. So after Rep two it was 1.5
- 1:12:32millimole and after Rep four it was 0.9 millimole.
- 1:12:36So yeah, clearing the lactate, feeling good.
- 1:12:41Then that evening I had 7 by 3 minutes off one minute jog.
- 1:12:47So I done this around an area beside me.
- 1:12:50It's sort of like a 1 kilometer like gravel loop.
- 1:12:53It's pretty windy area and there is like you go down a hill at
- 1:12:56the star and then you go up a hill at the end.
- 1:12:59So not flat either, but the average pace per kilometer was
- 1:13:03308-309-3063 eleven three O 830-6307.
- 1:13:10So yeah. And I've done the lactates as
- 1:13:12well after this. So after Rep three it was 5.5
- 1:13:16millimole, so pretty a little bit high.
- 1:13:18And after Rep seven it was 5.1 millimole.
- 1:13:21So like you could put that down to like after that Tuesday
- 1:13:26session, I had the guts of like 80 kilometers in the legs
- 1:13:29between Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
- 1:13:31So like the legs were pretty beat up and like it was windy,
- 1:13:36it was hilly. So that's the excuse I'm giving
- 1:13:38for like a little bit high of a lactate.
- 1:13:41But All in all, like the reps felt good, which is like the
- 1:13:45feeling, which is the main thing.
- 1:13:47So I wasn't too worried about the high lactate.
- 1:13:51Then Wednesday I got out for like a 75 minute run, just 16
- 1:13:55kilometers, just crazy, just trying to flush out the legs.
- 1:13:59And then in the night circuits and in the circus class, I did
- 1:14:03feel tired, like the load is sort of taking its toll.
- 1:14:06And with the race on Saturday, like I didn't really have that.
- 1:14:10Like I just had Thursday, Friday to sort of like get myself
- 1:14:13together. So Thursday I took totally off
- 1:14:15just to try and recuperate and then Friday I did I jogged down
- 1:14:22to my local gravel track and I done just to jog down was like
- 1:14:2615 minutes, let's say. And then I done 24 by 200 in my
- 1:14:32race shoe of choice, which was the night alpha fly next percent
- 1:14:36and doing the strides. They felt pretty good, but doing
- 1:14:41200 meter strides in them is completely different to running
- 1:14:4516 kilometers in them. But yeah, felt good.
- 1:14:52And then Saturday morning comes along, race day, so good up at I
- 1:14:56think 5:45, get a bit of food into me.
- 1:14:59Then I drive to my coach's house at bicarb there actually the fly
- 1:15:04carb from I think they're a brand based in England.
- 1:15:08So they do. It's a very similar to the
- 1:15:11Morton one, but I think a while back I ordered 6 packets and
- 1:15:16I've just been going through them and for all my races and
- 1:15:20like I really, really do feel the benefit of it.
- 1:15:24Like they just, I don't know, I feel like my legs just that bit
- 1:15:27more resilient and like the lactic doesn't really build up
- 1:15:30that much. So like that's like a staple now
- 1:15:34in my pre race routine like 2 hours before I am take it.
- 1:15:38And that's the one where you get 2 sachets and then you mix them,
- 1:15:43mix them together. So once what, 1's like a carb, a
- 1:15:46hot like a mix of yeah. What are the two products?
- 1:15:49Yeah, 1 is like a super mix or something like that.
- 1:15:52So you put that in first and it's got like a measurement on
- 1:15:55the packet. So after the packet is empty,
- 1:15:58then you like put or like 60 mil worth of water into the packet.
- 1:16:03So then you have your measurements.
- 1:16:04So then you put that in, you mix it up, then you actually put the
- 1:16:06bike carb mix in on top of that, then mix it up.
- 1:16:09And the first time I took it I was like, Oh my God, this is
- 1:16:13like the worst tasting thing ever.
- 1:16:14But you actually get used to it. So for the last two times, like
- 1:16:17it actually goes down pretty easy.
- 1:16:19Like the first time, yeah, it is pretty shit.
- 1:16:21But like you get used to it. And I think they've loaded some
- 1:16:23flavors now. They like a mango flavor and all
- 1:16:25that sort of stuff. So and.
- 1:16:27You take it what, 2 hours before I think?
- 1:16:29Two hours before the race, yeah. So it's well done digested.
- 1:16:35And your GI distress, like I know, like I remember hearing
- 1:16:38Jake talk about it on the on the interview just about how he had
- 1:16:43to go to the bathroom. Then you might have mentioned
- 1:16:45like 4 times before the race or whatever.
- 1:16:47But you've you've you've found it not to be too bad.
- 1:16:50I've never had any issues and like just to be safe, like I
- 1:16:52took it in a training session like before I took it in my
- 1:16:57first race and yeah, no issues whatsoever.
- 1:17:00So yeah, it's just like another little one or two percenter that
- 1:17:05you can take into your own hands and do it.
- 1:17:07And so yeah, then I done my warm up.
- 1:17:10I'm within the warm up. I done 2 minute threshold, one
- 1:17:14minute off, 2 minute threshold at around three O 8 and yeah,
- 1:17:19felt really good. Then just on the line, I took a
- 1:17:22Bix and 40 gram caffeine gel just for that little extra help
- 1:17:27again. And yeah, the race started and
- 1:17:30very quickly there was 2 lads that are really, really good
- 1:17:36runners and they sort of went out.
- 1:17:37They're going to run like 49 or something like that for the 16
- 1:17:40kilometers, 10 miles. And I was like literally going
- 1:17:44to go with them but then go on. What?
- 1:17:48What pace is for 49? What?
- 1:17:50What does that work out at? So 48 was it 48 would be 3 on
- 1:17:56the nose, right? So and then you've got another
- 1:17:5816, so 33048. So like 3O33O3 per K.
- 1:18:03Does that sound about right? Three O 3, so the lad who won it
- 1:18:06and the first half was three O 3 and his second-half was three O
- 1:18:112 per kilometer. Yeah, well.
- 1:18:13So yeah, and he was hopping along his name.
- 1:18:17So actually the winner was Pierre Merchant, who ran 49-O2.
- 1:18:22Then it was Hugh Armstrong who ran 4945 and 3rd was Stephen
- 1:18:27McCauley who ran 5055. So yeah, after the first like
- 1:18:34kilometer, they sort of broke away.
- 1:18:36And I was like, so I was in the second group, there's three of
- 1:18:39us and I was going to go with them.
- 1:18:41And I was looking to my side to see if your mom was going to go
- 1:18:45with me. And I was like, oh, what's your
- 1:18:46plan? And he was like, no, don't go
- 1:18:47with them, they're going to run 49 low.
- 1:18:50So yeah, we just went off by ourselves and it was just me and
- 1:18:54the sort of lad sort of like pushed on a little bit.
- 1:18:56So the first I'll get some of the splits here.
- 1:19:00You know, I was saying to you offline before seeing someone's
- 1:19:04page from the race because they came up on like the Discover or
- 1:19:07something. I think it was that Stephen
- 1:19:09McCauley who you just said and in his bio, I think he's got his
- 1:19:13PB. It's like 5 KPB of 1455 or
- 1:19:16something. Yeah.
- 1:19:18Should have had them. Which, yeah, makes me feel shit
- 1:19:20about myself. Thanks.
- 1:19:24But yeah, so the first bit is sort of downhill.
- 1:19:26So I was like 305304301309 and then you have a pinch.
- 1:19:33It went 3-15, then back downhill 3:05.
- 1:19:37And then I went uphill again. Three 16314 halfway and then I
- 1:19:42sort of plateaued a bit. SO3O83O8 more uphills 313 three
- 1:19:4716314 three 18 and at this stage, so for the first half, it
- 1:19:52was me and the guy who came 4th. So we are running together.
- 1:19:55I think it's Jake, Jake Reagan, Jake Oregon.
- 1:20:00So yeah, we're sort of sharing the lead.
- 1:20:02And then that Steve Magali guy came from nowhere behind us and
- 1:20:06he joined the pack and he sort of took us, took the lead.
- 1:20:09So he was dragging us along and he was sort of pushing from the
- 1:20:13front. And then with, I say like 2K, 2
- 1:20:171/2 K to go, there was a water station.
- 1:20:19And all right, you might be thinking I'm joking about the
- 1:20:22weather, but it was actually really warm, like the humidity.
- 1:20:24It's really, really humid in Ireland, which is unusual.
- 1:20:28What's the what's the weather like in terms of temperature, do
- 1:20:31you know? And I should have wait.
- 1:20:34Can I find it? I'll look up Dublin weather
- 1:20:40yesterday. Because, you know, like, you
- 1:20:43know, we talk about temperature plus dew point temperature.
- 1:20:46Yeah. So if you're like relative
- 1:20:48humidity is like 100% and the air temperature is say 20, then
- 1:20:53your dew point temperature is going to be 20.
- 1:20:56Like that's not a good, that's pretty awful weather to be
- 1:21:00running in. So if you're, if you're running
- 1:21:02in, even if it's only 20°, but it's like very humid, that's,
- 1:21:07that has an impact on performance.
- 1:21:09Like you sort of anything north of 20 is meant to like if you
- 1:21:13add the 2 numbers together. So like, let's say it's 10° and
- 1:21:16very humid, then you, you should be, it shouldn't be a factor.
- 1:21:20But once you start getting above that, if it's very humid, it's
- 1:21:23gonna slow you down. Where is there any good weather
- 1:21:27apps that I can actually AccuWeather?
- 1:21:30Maybe that's a good one. Sorry with this.
- 1:21:33So whilst you getting it off, what shoes did you go for?
- 1:21:37Because I know that was, Oh, you went to the alpha ones?
- 1:21:39Didn't you? I went through the Alpha Flight
- 1:21:40ones, Yeah. And do I regret it?
- 1:21:44Sort of, But I had no other option.
- 1:21:48So what time of day were you running was it?
- 1:21:50Was starting 9:00 Saturday morning.
- 1:21:54Yeah, yeah. It's probably like 20° based on
- 1:21:57like today it's saying it's between 19 to 25° during the
- 1:22:00day. Yeah, if it's probably Yeah, it
- 1:22:03was just there was more sun yesterday.
- 1:22:06So today it's saying the side I'm on warm and humid with the
- 1:22:10highest temperatures of 19 to 25°.
- 1:22:13Yeah. Do you need to get that wry
- 1:22:15smile off your face? Sorry, but that's why.
- 1:22:20No, no, no, no. It's funny when you're talking
- 1:22:26like so, so Perth people need to deal with suboptimal weather for
- 1:22:33like 80% of the year, right? This is one of the few times
- 1:22:36where in Perth it's actually not having a limiter on performance,
- 1:22:41but for most of it, it sort of does.
- 1:22:42And so you, you can, and you would have felt this Owen when
- 1:22:45you were here, right? Like you can actually be in
- 1:22:48decent shape, but if the weather, if you're running a, a
- 1:22:50distance race in that weather, you actually don't get to fully
- 1:22:53see your how fit you are. And that's what happens in Perth
- 1:22:58all the time. It's just unusual right?
- 1:23:00Where like you would often, it would still normally be
- 1:23:03reasonably cool come 9:00 AM in Ireland, right?
- 1:23:07Like right now it's 911 and right now it's 70°.
- 1:23:15Yeah, like that's comfortable. Which is weird.
- 1:23:17Normally it's like 10 or 11. Yeah.
- 1:23:20And fresh and it's and. That's the difference, yeah.
- 1:23:23And that's the difference with like, say the Gold Coast
- 1:23:26Marathon. It's run in July, which is like
- 1:23:29in the heart of Aussie winter, but it the the line of latitude
- 1:23:33for the Gold Coast relative to Perth.
- 1:23:35Like it's, it's a lot closer to tropical weather.
- 1:23:38And therefore the humidity is normally like 80 odd percent.
- 1:23:41And it's normally like if it's so if it's 15 to 17° with like
- 1:23:4485% humidity, it's just nowhere near as pleasant as what it
- 1:23:48would be if it was like 10°. Like it.
- 1:23:50It's just, it is just that little bit worse.
- 1:23:52So I definitely can empathize with the fact that it's not nice
- 1:23:56to run in. For Sam, yeah, enough excuses.
- 1:24:00Well, actually all the excuses are going to come now.
- 1:24:02And so yeah, the legs were like the quads, like aerobically I
- 1:24:08felt good, but the quads were a bit beat and I feel like the
- 1:24:12shoes didn't help in a way, but and I was getting a blister on
- 1:24:17the arch. Do you ever get a blister on the
- 1:24:19arch of your foot from them shoes?
- 1:24:21Only the twos. I think the alpha fly alpha fly
- 1:24:24twos. I've had a blister from the arch
- 1:24:25but they're they're the only ones.
- 1:24:27I'm not sure if it was they were stiff because I hadn't worn them
- 1:24:31in two years or I don't know. But yeah, I was getting a
- 1:24:35blister. I didn't feel that until after
- 1:24:36the race now, to be honest. But there was a water station
- 1:24:38with like, 2 1/2 K 2K to go. And I went over to, like, grab a
- 1:24:44cup and I could feel like the side of my, like, ribs and all
- 1:24:49sort of tense up a little bit. And then I splashed on my face,
- 1:24:53half went to my mouth, and I literally felt like I got
- 1:24:56stabbed. It was a really weird, like,
- 1:24:57stabbing stitch pain. And I was like, oh, shit.
- 1:25:00And I was like, I couldn't like, take a full breath in.
- 1:25:05I felt like Brett Robinson. But yeah, so I'd say we're going
- 1:25:12308. And I had to like, totally,
- 1:25:14like, back off. It was pretty sore.
- 1:25:17So my last like 2 kilometers were like 328 and like 3:30.
- 1:25:21So I totally dropped off the two guys.
- 1:25:25So it was like a big like what if like like I think your man
- 1:25:30was always going to come third, but like you never really know
- 1:25:32what can happen in that last kilometer, 2 kilometers.
- 1:25:35And then even there were like last night when I was lying in
- 1:25:38bed, like the side was still like really sore when I was
- 1:25:41lying on it. So I think it was like a
- 1:25:42muscular thing, but I've never had it before, which is it's
- 1:25:46really annoying and weird, but yeah.
- 1:25:49So the guy that finished third, is that who you're running with
- 1:25:52up until then I. Think that he was he was the guy
- 1:25:54who came from behind. So he ran like a really, really
- 1:25:56good race. He timed to perfect.
- 1:25:58Yeah, good play. And I think he's in a big
- 1:26:00marathon block as well. So I think he had heavy legs.
- 1:26:03So yeah, shout out to him. He's fit, but just goes to show
- 1:26:07like I I wasn't really doing like specific.
- 1:26:11I thought like the 5K training could sort of like it does make
- 1:26:13you relatively fit, but I just was missing that like 16 K is a
- 1:26:18long way. So I was just missing more of
- 1:26:21that specific work. So like 5150 like it was still
- 1:26:25like a semi decent result. Like I think it was 3/13 per
- 1:26:29kilometer with like the 2 kilometers super slow.
- 1:26:32So like I'd say I was in my half marathon, like I think my half
- 1:26:37marathon PB was 311 pace. So would have been able to keep
- 1:26:40that up for another three mile. I don't know.
- 1:26:43But like a positive, like I'm not injured.
- 1:26:47I'm, I think I've got at my local race in like 2 weeks.
- 1:26:50So for the next two weeks I'll probably just be, I won't be
- 1:26:52anything crazy just to get by and then I'll have a down week.
- 1:26:55So bright side, like I'm fit, I'm healthy.
- 1:26:58It was just annoying that I got a stitch and like it was, I
- 1:27:03think it was, I must have been just so tense that when I like
- 1:27:05reached for the cup, my body wasn't, you wasn't expecting it
- 1:27:08or something. I don't know.
- 1:27:10So yeah, not ideal. But then, yeah, today I'll just
- 1:27:15go for like 45 or 60 minutes just to shake the race out of
- 1:27:18the legs. Like my quads are a bit beat up.
- 1:27:21So yeah, I think it'll be like 100 and low 100 and like 5 or
- 1:27:26something like that for the week.
- 1:27:28Still a very good week. It's been a nice good block of
- 1:27:30training, huh? Yeah, like, I probably don't
- 1:27:33didn't do myself justice by doing like in a way, like the
- 1:27:37early round of the week was pretty heavy.
- 1:27:39Like I wasn't like fresh, but it wasn't like an A ball race.
- 1:27:42It was just like to see where I'm at.
- 1:27:44So yeah. Well, you've got to think as
- 1:27:47well, like since you've come back, is that like your fourth
- 1:27:49race? Like you've had a pretty intense
- 1:27:51period of 1 getting fit, but two racing through it as well.
- 1:27:56Yeah, exactly. And sort of I can't take that
- 1:27:59for granted either. Like I'd sort of need to give my
- 1:28:01body like a bit of a break now because I feel like I'm not the
- 1:28:03most durable runner. I feel like in past I've like
- 1:28:07got on a really good six months and then I just crossed that red
- 1:28:11line and get injured or something like that.
- 1:28:13So I'm sort of just going to pull the pin on that before that
- 1:28:16happens this time. So yeah, look on the bright
- 1:28:21side. Yeah.
- 1:28:22Is it like 12 weeks ago that you were sort of, I can see in your
- 1:28:25Strava bars it was like 65 K weight.
- 1:28:28You're probably just building back then, right?
- 1:28:31Yeah, I think the week before that was already something.
- 1:28:34So it was just like like my gradual rebuild.
- 1:28:37So in 12 weeks I've gotten I've gotten pretty fit.
- 1:28:40So yeah, I'm happy with how things are going.
- 1:28:42You've gotten back into peak fitness and you've got 2 new PBS
- 1:28:46along the way as well. Oh well.
- 1:28:48Yeah, well, I've never, I think my 3 KPB before that was like my
- 1:28:533K split in my 5 KPB. So yeah, the 327 was a PB.
- 1:29:00You know, out of interest, on all these races you've been to,
- 1:29:03is there any easy double chatter with the participants at the
- 1:29:06end? They.
- 1:29:08Like keep your head down is a bit like, Oh, don't want to say
- 1:29:11that. No, they haven't an iota.
- 1:29:14I feel like we haven't broken the Irish market yet.
- 1:29:18Speaking of local influence, I was running to work which is 95%
- 1:29:24of the time just me and my thoughts.
- 1:29:25But I had someone running the other way and this guy takes out
- 1:29:29a Airpod and goes easy double and then puts the endpoints to
- 1:29:33his ears as he was as he was running past in the opposite
- 1:29:35direction. That's so funny.
- 1:29:38Yeah, that was cool. The only bit of that I get is
- 1:29:44when my brother slides me having a running podcast.
- 1:29:51Yeah, you're getting more so negative feedback in Ireland.
- 1:29:55Yeah, we're just not there yet. Deliberately trying to keep it
- 1:29:59under wraps. Don't want to get bullied?
- 1:30:03We say that though, but isn't half the listenership not
- 1:30:06Australian nowadays? Yeah, well, it certainly was for
- 1:30:09a period, which is quite bizarre to think about, but cool as
- 1:30:13well. And then you do, you do feel it
- 1:30:16if you scroll through the Strava club members, there's like
- 1:30:19people from kind of all over the show.
- 1:30:21So shout out to those listeners. I'll just tell you about my
- 1:30:26training or lack thereof. Done quite a bit of cycling.
- 1:30:30Well, what felt like quite a bit of cycling because it goes to
- 1:30:33Strava. I had luck before.
- 1:30:36I was expecting it felt like it was going to say like 3 or 400 K
- 1:30:40and it says 220. And then compare that could only
- 1:30:44do 220K on a bike and then 250. It's like, what the hell?
- 1:30:50It's so funny actually. Like because when you said 220 K
- 1:30:54I'm like that's a cracking. That's a fair effort.
- 1:30:57But then when you say it opposite what he just ran, it's
- 1:31:00like fuck me. It just blows my mind. 250 KS a
- 1:31:04week, just like I. Was saying 1000 KA month now
- 1:31:08based on the last month. What's that?
- 1:31:10What he's done? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:12But like 220. Yeah, I like, I'm getting a bit
- 1:31:15hung up on it myself and just wanted to run more and more,
- 1:31:18which is not the right attitude. You just got to work out what's
- 1:31:20right for you. But like, and with that in mind,
- 1:31:23like 220 K week of riding, but that's still, that's a good
- 1:31:27amount of aerobic work, right? Like even say you're going 30 K
- 1:31:30an hour, that's like, you know that's a solid 7 hours of
- 1:31:33aerobic riding, right? Yeah, well, it makes me
- 1:31:36appreciate like there'll be no more triathlon slander on here
- 1:31:40now that, you know, I'm transitioning and stuff now.
- 1:31:43But it makes me appreciate like how how hard it must be to train
- 1:31:47like that. Just to rubs off in the wound,
- 1:31:51Jake has actually ran since we've started this.
- 1:31:54He's at 272 now. And please look at the look at
- 1:31:58the look at the Straba post, he says.
- 1:32:00Finally found a team that will let me train with them and it's
- 1:32:03the girls again. He's off his head.
- 1:32:13He's off the rocker. Look at that.
- 1:32:15Look the feature. Does he nap?
- 1:32:18Did we ask him when you chatted to him?
- 1:32:20Oh my God, look at that. But like for example, for that
- 1:32:27ride this morning, I've done two hours and I was like giving it a
- 1:32:31good nudge. But that's the thing, it just
- 1:32:34destroys your quads. Like quads are just like stale,
- 1:32:38but then my heart rate afterwards it was average like
- 1:32:41148. So when you consider two hours
- 1:32:44worth of aerobic work at 148 beats a minute, that's like it's
- 1:32:48a decent workout really. Obviously you're not running,
- 1:32:51but it's it's taken me over. And then anyway, that's just is
- 1:32:56what it is. I don't need to fucking start
- 1:32:58analyzing cycles, but the the main thing is that I've got the
- 1:33:02scat. And you'd prefer cycling outside
- 1:33:05than cycling on a stationary bike inside?
- 1:33:08Yeah, so initially I was doing loads on the bike in the gym, in
- 1:33:11the apartment here. But like, mentally I would give
- 1:33:14in after 45 minutes. It would just be like like gets
- 1:33:1845 minutes. And then I'd feel like I'd
- 1:33:20worked hard for half an hour. I had a decent sweat and I'd be
- 1:33:24like, yeah, that's me done now. Whereas going outside on the
- 1:33:27bike, like time just passes so quick or you just cycle away
- 1:33:31from home for like half an hour and then you automatically
- 1:33:34you've done an hour because you have to get back.
- 1:33:36I'll just be petrified of like everything that can kill me on a
- 1:33:40bike outside, as you've experienced last week.
- 1:33:42Experienced that one last week, didn't.
- 1:33:46I Are you sticking to bike paths?
- 1:33:48Trying to, yeah, but like obviously you have to use the
- 1:33:50road at some point to get somewhere.
- 1:33:54I did say we were finishing our run and you've, you've, you've
- 1:33:58rode past us and you've given us a Oh yeah, as you've gone past.
- 1:34:02And then there's, this is on a like 2, you know, dual lane Rd.
- 1:34:07And then you've just stuck your right, there's a car coming and
- 1:34:10you've just stuck your arm out like, hey, now I'm just going to
- 1:34:12cross these, these lanes because the Hertzman markets are here.
- 1:34:16You you knew there was a car there, right?
- 1:34:19Yeah, there's loads of room. Oh my God.
- 1:34:25Listen, my mum listens to this and she's had a chat with me
- 1:34:31last week about being careful and all this, so don't be
- 1:34:34bagging me out. And does the does the electrical
- 1:34:39aggravate it? The power's still off on it from
- 1:34:42that double trouble about 3 weeks ago.
- 1:34:44No, just go to a Revo, they're cheapest chips and there's loads
- 1:34:49of shit there. Again, like motivation to go
- 1:34:53physically go to a gym just across train, it's not there.
- 1:34:56I'd rather just get on the bike and risk my life seemingly.
- 1:35:00I used to like. So do let's say 40 on the
- 1:35:02elliptical and then jump on the stationary.
- 1:35:04Do another 40 like mix it up. True, but the the fresh air is
- 1:35:09nice. Supposing.
- 1:35:13What were you going to say then, Dean?
- 1:35:16I don't know, nothing good probably, so that's fine.
- 1:35:19Interested to hear about the the update to the injury right?
- 1:35:23Oh yeah, we'll see what you what sense you can make of this.
- 1:35:26So got the scan on Monday last week think it was the results
- 1:35:30came back anyway, so the findings say and there's context
- 1:35:34the radiologist gave context that had the MRI three months
- 1:35:38prior and there's plans are found blah blah.
- 1:35:40So it says there. There is again evidence of
- 1:35:43plantar fasciitis involving the central band for insertion.
- 1:35:48Mild bone marrow oedemia persists but has improved.
- 1:35:52There's one good thing has persists but improved.
- 1:35:55So at least like. Yeah.
- 1:35:58Maybe like 1% of like positive correlation there.
- 1:36:03Mild. Yeah, Mild, rather.
- 1:36:06Than spicy. All good words.
- 1:36:09Yeah. When allowing for differences in
- 1:36:11scam resolution. So I think these are trying to
- 1:36:14say that the previous scan was a little shy because you can't see
- 1:36:17too much from it. A tiny interstitial slash
- 1:36:22insertional tear at the epicenter of the bone.
- 1:36:25Oedema is probably unchanged, measuring 4 meters, 4mm
- 1:36:30longitudinal. The lateral band in session is
- 1:36:34relatively normal. Tiny plantar calcaneal spare
- 1:36:37mild underlying soft tissue oedemia of the plantar heal pad.
- 1:36:42So The thing is the plantar fasciitis is still there.
- 1:36:47But the thing I'm more concerned about is this tear thing.
- 1:36:49Like I probably need to go and speak to, as you were saying the
- 1:36:52a physio about this tear, because I mean, athletes
- 1:36:55probably run around every day with millions of these tears and
- 1:36:58stuff. The thing that I don't get is I
- 1:37:01still don't know directly what the pain comes from.
- 1:37:04Like is it the planter? Is it this tear?
- 1:37:07Is it the bone thing like? Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:37:10That sounded like an earthquake. You were describing an
- 1:37:12earthquake with the epicenter and all that sort of shit.
- 1:37:16There's an earthquake in Maheal. Retire.
- 1:37:20Bone edema or whatever, that's bone bruising, right?
- 1:37:24So it sounds like doesn't, which doesn't sound ideal.
- 1:37:27I think so, but I mean The thing is on that one, there's no,
- 1:37:29there's no stressy. So bruising is better than a
- 1:37:32stressy I guess. Maybe that's the the healing of
- 1:37:36it. Yeah.
- 1:37:38Pardon the pun. But the only thing is the doctor
- 1:37:42could tell that like I was trying to get some Peace of Mind
- 1:37:46as in, like, OK, what are we looking at?
- 1:37:48Two to three more months, six months start to run in a couple
- 1:37:51of weeks. Like literally what's this?
- 1:37:53What does that mean for me? Like I'm not so clinical to
- 1:37:56understand that and translate it into real terms.
- 1:38:00And obviously he's reluctant to put time frames on it and say
- 1:38:05black and white, which is fair enough, but I was like, so 4
- 1:38:08weeks or what? And he's like now more like 2 to
- 1:38:12three months, which I don't know how true that is.
- 1:38:15I'm going to have to get it cross referenced and get a
- 1:38:18second opinion. But The thing is like,
- 1:38:20ultimately it still feels pretty uncomfortable.
- 1:38:24So I mean, that's a telltale sign, at least for now that it's
- 1:38:27certainly not ready. But fucking hell, like I might
- 1:38:30as well have literally broke my leg.
- 1:38:31It's been three months up plus already and still like no
- 1:38:36imminent return. Like what the hell?
- 1:38:39So yeah, it's like what has happened over the last three
- 1:38:43months recovery wise is that you'd be asking really sugar?
- 1:38:49It shows like how much when you're so focused in in a block
- 1:38:53or like working towards something.
- 1:38:55You can mask all these things though, because this I literally
- 1:38:59haven't done anything for three months, so it's got slightly
- 1:39:01better than whatever it was and I literally ran a marathon on it
- 1:39:05and trained through. Is this the same thing?
- 1:39:09Croak? Sad.
- 1:39:10Your man, Bradley Croaker. Yes, I always listen to him and
- 1:39:14he's talking about is his like he's always talking about his
- 1:39:17heel isn't he? But is it more Achilles related
- 1:39:19as well? So it's not your Achilles at
- 1:39:21all, it's your actual heel. Like near the bottom of the
- 1:39:24heel. Yeah.
- 1:39:25So when I first felt that I was mentioning Achilles, wasn't I?
- 1:39:28But on these scans, the Achilles always comes back as like
- 1:39:31nothing going on at all. Like you presume how big is the
- 1:39:35tear again? Formal.
- 1:39:37Yeah, Like you'd presume after 4.
- 1:39:41Is it 14 weeks? You said you're out.
- 1:39:43Like a tear be fixed. Yeah, apparently to encourage
- 1:39:47healing and tears you have to do like strength stuff and that
- 1:39:51exercises rather than just pure rest.
- 1:39:55It's annoying that like you can't really get a massage.
- 1:39:57With these new results. You can't really get a massage
- 1:39:59in the area either. Can you like to increase blood
- 1:40:02flow or can you get needles or? I mean, you can get that the
- 1:40:05doctor said that we could start this PRP, this platelet rich
- 1:40:08plasma thing, but the last time I was in with him, he talked me
- 1:40:12out of it and now he's saying it's an option.
- 1:40:15Yeah, maybe get a second opinion.
- 1:40:17Yeah. So yeah, just have to become
- 1:40:19cyclist for a little bit. Man, I think Pilates as your
- 1:40:22calling. I did go back there this week
- 1:40:25and redeem myself from the coffee stain shorts.
- 1:40:28Her play, How'd you go? Yeah, All right.
- 1:40:33I think she was, she was impressed.
- 1:40:37She actually commented. Yeah, yeah, everyone.
- 1:40:45The the instructor commented on how much I was sweating, which I
- 1:40:48thought was quite ironic given the class was called sweat.
- 1:40:53She was like, oh, you're sweating a lot.
- 1:40:54I was like, well, isn't that not the goal?
- 1:40:56No, everyone else just not working very hard in it.
- 1:41:00Is it in a? Is it in like a heated chamber?
- 1:41:04Is that part of it? No, it's just a normal one, this
- 1:41:07one. But you know, I've got my heart
- 1:41:10rate monitor on, so I'm working towards some goals on the on the
- 1:41:13feedback on the watch. Give it set to like a Pilates
- 1:41:19activity. I didn't dig it out, but I did
- 1:41:22put the first one to see what was suitable was gym cardio.
- 1:41:27People are turning this podcast off by now.
- 1:41:29We need to start getting back on some running.
- 1:41:32So besides that, yeah, not a lot.
- 1:41:36So I think that concludes training weeks for now.
- 1:41:40Yeah. But on the on the positive, like
- 1:41:43you've got an update, you know, there's a little tear there.
- 1:41:47You can start working towards like getting through that now
- 1:41:51like it's not. Yeah, I've done the hard part by
- 1:41:55being off for a prolonged time and staying like somewhat in
- 1:41:58touch with, like trying to stay in shape and being motivated to
- 1:42:02train still. Like I'm not really allowing
- 1:42:05myself to get into this headspace yet, but I have once
- 1:42:08or twice thought like, oh, how good is the comeback actually
- 1:42:11going to be? Like, I'm going to not take
- 1:42:13anything for granted. I'm going to enjoy it so much
- 1:42:16and stuff, but I'm deliberately trying not to go there yet
- 1:42:19because I don't know when that's going to be.
- 1:42:21So it'll feel like it'll just tease me almost if I start
- 1:42:25thinking like that. Yeah, like, look, realistically
- 1:42:30you can just write off the rest of the year really.
- 1:42:32Like, you're not going to run a marathon in freaking December or
- 1:42:35anything. So literally just 2025 first
- 1:42:39half was unbelievable. Just write off this next and
- 1:42:43then start looking at 2026. Really.
- 1:42:45Lessons learned. Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:42:48I would be if it was me taking the reports to Steve or someone
- 1:42:52that you trust to get a, get some in, try and get more
- 1:42:56insights into what their findings are.
- 1:42:58And you know, like you say, you're sort of walking away with
- 1:43:01not a great deal of clarity around what should I be doing to
- 1:43:04help accelerate healing? What should I be doing to sort
- 1:43:07of what's safe in terms of cross training, like all that sort of
- 1:43:12stuff. Like, I feel like, you know, you
- 1:43:14haven't been set up well to actually know what you should be
- 1:43:16doing in terms of management of the injury and also what you're
- 1:43:19allowed to do to reintroduce load.
- 1:43:22And you know, just a generic like, hey, it's still a while
- 1:43:25away. Come back in three months is a
- 1:43:27bit. It's not super helpful, is it?
- 1:43:30Like even if it's like ISA every night or something like that.
- 1:43:34Yeah, or not, you know, but like you at least you'd hope that
- 1:43:38you'd get some, some insights into some more insight as to
- 1:43:42what exactly is, is wrong and, and what are the things we, you
- 1:43:45should be concerned about. Like like you said, you're like
- 1:43:48still walking away, not completely clear on what is
- 1:43:50causing my physical discomfort and how I should manage it.
- 1:43:54It's sort of a bit frustrating. I think to thimps to sympathize
- 1:43:59with the doctor. He's obviously like extremely
- 1:44:01qualified and seen a million injuries before and people go
- 1:44:05through like the recovery process and stuff, but that
- 1:44:08doesn't mean that I'm equally as experienced with it.
- 1:44:11Like this is my first proper injury.
- 1:44:13So I am maybe like quite anxious and impatient about it and
- 1:44:17thinking that it's going to be hailed like in two weeks and
- 1:44:20stuff and maybe I do need a bit more communication on it.
- 1:44:24So yeah. But even if he would say, hey,
- 1:44:27this is like a six month thing, like don't get like even that
- 1:44:30would be helpful. It just feels like you'd be
- 1:44:32fine. Yeah.
- 1:44:33Yeah. But you just that expectation
- 1:44:35management doesn't seem like it's there sort of I don't know.
- 1:44:39I've been chasing some some further insights from someone.
- 1:44:42Yep, so update news this time next week.
- 1:44:46But the The thing is like we've what, we're 26 episodes into
- 1:44:50this podcast. If I've been out for 14 weeks,
- 1:44:54that means I'm more injured since the inception of Easy
- 1:44:57Double than I am trainer. I, I ran with Nat, who joined us
- 1:45:04at Maragami yesterday. She came down to a session and
- 1:45:08she's like, oh, like, you know, it's a long road back because
- 1:45:10she'd been out, you know, for a while, just injured and sort of
- 1:45:16trying to get back into it. And she's sort of like, you
- 1:45:19know, and thought about giving it up.
- 1:45:20But then I've listened to Owen and he's given me hope.
- 1:45:24So I think we're all, you know, it's amazing what can happen in
- 1:45:2712 weeks, so. Yeah, you give me hope every
- 1:45:30week, Owen. There's a light at the end of
- 1:45:34the tunnel. Yeah.
- 1:45:36Thanks you. You are the light.
- 1:45:40The Irish light, right? Pot of Pot of Owen at the end of
- 1:45:45the at the end of the tunnel. Just they're waiting there in a
- 1:45:48part in a leprechaun. The rest of the running news,
- 1:45:54the Chicago elite fields have been released in the past week
- 1:45:57or so, which is exciting because that is, is it September or
- 1:46:01October? Chicago?
- 1:46:03I think it's September, but we've got in the men's field,
- 1:46:07John Korea, Timothy Kaplanga, Jacob Kaplimo, the half marathon
- 1:46:13world record holder, Connor Mance going for the American
- 1:46:16record, Galen Rope. I didn't even know he was like
- 1:46:19still going. But like that's out of nowhere.
- 1:46:22Rory Linklater, CJ Albertson, Mark Scott, amongst others,
- 1:46:27obviously. I think it's on the 12th of
- 1:46:31October. 12th October. There you go.
- 1:46:34I'll be interested in how Casey Clinger goes.
- 1:46:36So he's the young Brooks guy with Connor Manson, Clayton
- 1:46:41Young, he's in that group now. He's a BYU alumni, as they call
- 1:46:46it over there. So it'll be interesting to see
- 1:46:48how he goes on his debut. So is he the skinny looking one?
- 1:46:53Yeah, well, they're all pretty skinny.
- 1:46:55Well, yeah, he is the skinny. He's.
- 1:46:57Tall and skinny maybe, yeah. Then the women's, you have 4
- 1:47:04Ethiopians, Alimu Facer, Hipra Dessay, Kali Hugger Thackery,
- 1:47:13Lindsay Flanagan, Philly Bowden. That'll be interesting to follow
- 1:47:17because she'll document all of that on YouTube.
- 1:47:19Maybe we'll do a YouTube Diaries on her once that gets going, or
- 1:47:22well, closer to the time rather. Yes, well, look at our most
- 1:47:27recent YouTube video and it's not looking too good.
- 1:47:31But yeah, that's all I'll say. Dangle the carrots.
- 1:47:36Yeah. Grand Slam track done.
- 1:47:39A letter to the fans. I don't know how much more of
- 1:47:42this I can tolerate not. The same.
- 1:47:44The Grand Slam. It's so annoying.
- 1:47:47Just pay them the freaking money.
- 1:47:50Like yes, he's trying to like, come out, spin himself positive
- 1:47:54way out of it, isn't he? He can sell, can't he?
- 1:47:57He just can't get a binding contract.
- 1:48:00He just can't close. Yeah.
- 1:48:04Yeah, I was going to, I was going to read the letter, but
- 1:48:06it's pretty lengthy. But it's basically Jay trying to
- 1:48:10put himself in a positive light and convince us that he will pay
- 1:48:13athletes and that they will be back next year.
- 1:48:15But I think he's misread the room a little considering like
- 1:48:21the general funds attitude and tolerance for it all now.
- 1:48:25Like, I think people have almost moved on from it, haven't they?
- 1:48:28Yeah. But also like if there was any
- 1:48:32sort of hope that maybe it was just a financial challenge and
- 1:48:35it's been resolved, that's sort of fleeting.
- 1:48:38And like did the statement give anything positive or or give
- 1:48:43anything new or insightful as to like it did it commit on a hey
- 1:48:48they will get money at some point or like it just gave
- 1:48:51nothing. It's just like a horse has been
- 1:48:54really hard for me too. But the last bit of the first
- 1:48:58paragraph of the first page says many athletes have shared how
- 1:49:02much they've enjoyed competing with us this season.
- 1:49:06And he says, and to me, that's success.
- 1:49:09So they've enjoyed racing. But yeah, that's success in his
- 1:49:13eyes. The crazy thing is this whole
- 1:49:16competition got put together because people were maybe going
- 1:49:19to get like they all rocked out, compromised their bill towards
- 1:49:22the world champs because they were going to get paid a
- 1:49:25handsome amount of money. And that the one thing that was
- 1:49:28the good thing didn't arrive. Like, terrible, But yeah.
- 1:49:35Jacob to couple things on Yahoo. He'd done a YouTube this week
- 1:49:39and I don't know if you've seen it, I don't know, speaking to
- 1:49:41Dean about it earlier. And the title is like something
- 1:49:45to do with setbacks and whatever, you know, because he's
- 1:49:47pulled out of these recent diamond leagues with his
- 1:49:49Achilles thing. And in it, he's talking about
- 1:49:52like, managing his expectations and with overcoming these
- 1:49:58setbacks, blah, blah. And then he randomly says like,
- 1:50:01oh, you know, like we maybe have to look to do things differently
- 1:50:04this year. Like, don't forget, originally I
- 1:50:07was a steeplechaser and like, giggles.
- 1:50:10And you're like, he's not going to do the steeple, is he?
- 1:50:12Surely not. I seen this and I think I don't
- 1:50:16think he will do the steeple, but I don't think he's like he's
- 1:50:19a, he's a mileage monster. Like he's, he's so aerobically
- 1:50:22fit that I think he'll just look at a longer distance.
- 1:50:26I don't think he'll do the 15 because the 15 puts so much
- 1:50:29pressure on his Achilles. It's like really hard on the
- 1:50:31body. But I think he'll be able to
- 1:50:33like win a 5K or and I think he'll look to the roads after
- 1:50:39the season because if he calls it after September, it'll be
- 1:50:42like such a short season. So I think he's going to look to
- 1:50:44the roads after and probably try and run like a good half
- 1:50:47marathon. But I can't see him like even if
- 1:50:49he does do the steeple like I think the Keely would have him.
- 1:50:52What's what's his name? Albert, Carly.
- 1:50:55Albert Carly. Yeah, the Moroccan kid.
- 1:50:58Although he's standing on bloody 1500 meter start lines now, so
- 1:51:01maybe I mean yakup of swap bodies or something.
- 1:51:04Yeah, I don't know, but it'd be imagine he would not rocks up in
- 1:51:07a in a steeple. Can he just do that even though
- 1:51:10if he doesn't have the qualifying standard or does he
- 1:51:12have that much pull in Norway? Yeah.
- 1:51:14Surely not, but yeah. Yeah, how we qualify?
- 1:51:20It does say what you've just said though.
- 1:51:22Basically Owen says like Tokyo will be the season opener
- 1:51:25though, and we're going to look to extend it like beyond and
- 1:51:28maybe we'll get to do like some fun and excite and in different
- 1:51:31races. And it's annoying because it's
- 1:51:33like that cliffhanger and you come away like thinking, what
- 1:51:37race? What are you going to do?
- 1:51:38Then announce it. Like just Copenhagen half after
- 1:51:41that which he done last year, but also Valencia half is start
- 1:51:45of December which is like rapid so you can nearly see him lining
- 1:51:50up for that and like running a freaking like sub 60 half
- 1:51:54marathon or something like that. What would the European Who
- 1:51:56would be the European half marathon record holder?
- 1:52:00That's a good question. The Swiss guy had it at one
- 1:52:07point. That was years ago I think.
- 1:52:11Would it be like the Belgium marathoner?
- 1:52:15Basharupdi. Maybe.
- 1:52:19Give me a second. I'll move to Hawkins's Callum.
- 1:52:23Hawkins has run 60 flat. I'm just spitballing people that
- 1:52:27we know that have run around that time.
- 1:52:29Yeah, I think Moe's run similar times to Brett.
- 1:52:31Maybe it was a little bit quicker.
- 1:52:33He's the only person quicker in British.
- 1:52:35I think it's Julian Wanders from Switzerland in 1996.
- 1:52:43He ran 5913. 96 No, can't be 96. 19 Somebody's born.
- 1:52:49That's where he's born. Oh.
- 1:52:51Sorry, yeah, 20/19/2019. Yeah, 2019, yeah.
- 1:52:54In that race, it's actually the race.
- 1:52:57So Jacob Kiplimo isn't doing worlds.
- 1:53:00He's going to a race in the UAE. I think he's doing a half
- 1:53:05marathon there instead. And it was that race.
- 1:53:07It's Raz Al Kami. I think it's like massive money.
- 1:53:11So yeah. Your man.
- 1:53:12Keep playing now, yeah? About to see he's on that
- 1:53:17Chicago start list. You know, maybe he'd done London
- 1:53:22deliberately at an acceptable level just to like kind of buy
- 1:53:25themselves some time and some plaud that's got some
- 1:53:28credibility that he's not a cheat and now he's going to come
- 1:53:31to Chicago and. Well, we never, we never think.
- 1:53:36Right. Hold on.
- 1:53:39That's an allegation. That's track that.
- 1:53:46We spoke about Fred Kelly's whereabouts.
- 1:53:48Failures, haven't we? Well, we mentioned that, alluded
- 1:53:51to it. The sprinters don't have the
- 1:53:54cleanest records, do they? Seemingly.
- 1:53:56Yeah, what was that stat, Owen? Around the top ten fastest we.
- 1:54:00Mentioned so the top ten fastest sprinters of all time?
- 1:54:04Seven of them have been popped for doping or whereabouts
- 1:54:09failures or something like that, and a lot of them are American.
- 1:54:14So if you think doping is just happening in in Kenya, give your
- 1:54:20eyes closed. It's happening everywhere.
- 1:54:22They're just better at it. Jess Hall has seen some quotes
- 1:54:24from her talking about going for gold in Tokyo and like you
- 1:54:28consider Jess to be like the happy smiley, like nice girl and
- 1:54:32stuff. So it was interesting to see her
- 1:54:34say this. So she says the important thing
- 1:54:37for me has been to learn how to win races and set myself up for
- 1:54:41gold. If you miss the win, you still
- 1:54:43want to be among the medalists. Every last Rep and train and
- 1:54:46every final 200 meters, I remind myself this one's for gold.
- 1:54:50And obviously she's against Kippy Aegon.
- 1:54:52So let's fight and talk. We love it.
- 1:54:55The last item on the news role for this week was this just a
- 1:54:59little thing I've seen on Instagram that I think it's just
- 1:55:02like a British club Henhill Harry is they've basically put
- 1:55:06on a 3000 meter steepled race called last call for Tokyo and
- 1:55:13they've they're trying to help out the British athletes mainly
- 1:55:16to get the standard. But then there's a few
- 1:55:18internationals as well heading over to try and chase that
- 1:55:21standard. Just they created this race in
- 1:55:24the past couple of weeks based on people being so close to the
- 1:55:28standard and not having like that much access to steeple
- 1:55:31races. So that'll be pretty cool
- 1:55:33spectacle you'd think, you know, like why everyone's there.
- 1:55:37They'll probably help each other out largely and then race for
- 1:55:39the last couple of laps or whatever.
- 1:55:41Big for the Aussies. I think one of the Aussies is
- 1:55:43just a couple of seconds off, isn't he?
- 1:55:45Yeah, it was Buckingham. Yes.
- 1:55:47I think that's why maybe I've seen it.
- 1:55:49Yeah, I. Think it's like even less than a
- 1:55:51second or something. It's like fraction.
- 1:55:55YouTube Diaries. Yeah, I can mention I can take
- 1:55:59the lead or, or it's have we mentioned Clayton Young's
- 1:56:02YouTube channel on the podcast before?
- 1:56:05We've definitely referred to it. I'm not sure we've done a full
- 1:56:07like YouTube Diaries on it. Yeah, we have.
- 1:56:11Yeah. So he's he's done it.
- 1:56:12I think I was having a look. He's done like a road to New
- 1:56:15York. Well, his YouTube channel
- 1:56:18started in the lead up to Paris Olympics.
- 1:56:22And is it is some of the funding is it is it partnered with with
- 1:56:28ASICS or it's just that he's just an ethics, ethics athlete.
- 1:56:31I'm not sure how it do you know. Do you have any more context to
- 1:56:35you guys? So the Paris one was ASIC, I
- 1:56:38think. Did you run Chicago or Boston?
- 1:56:41One of them was Stride and I'm not sure what this one he
- 1:56:44normally does have. Like I think one of them was
- 1:56:47Cadence and he normally does have like a big brand like
- 1:56:50support on it. I think that core core involved
- 1:56:54with this one. Yeah, Core and Strider on the
- 1:56:57title or whatever in the But yeah, for this latest series.
- 1:57:04So he's in the past, I think, you know, the three previous
- 1:57:07builds, right, New York, Boston and the Olympics.
- 1:57:10Him and Connor Mancy's training partner were.
- 1:57:12So it was cool. It was sort of focused around
- 1:57:14Clayton Young's viewpoint, but you would sort of get a lot of
- 1:57:18insight into condom answers build as well, right, Which was
- 1:57:21super interesting. 1 to ASICS athlete, once a Nike athlete,
- 1:57:25but both coached by is it Ed Einstein Stone and they're yeah,
- 1:57:31they're both ex BYU athletes, aren't they?
- 1:57:34And I think that BYU team that that he's coaching didn't they
- 1:57:38didn't some of those collegiate athletes just run themselves
- 1:57:41onto the steeplechase team if for the world champs as well?
- 1:57:44I think he's coaching like these young talented steeplers like
- 1:57:47he's just he's the man right at the minute as far as coaching
- 1:57:51goes. And these guys are super nice
- 1:57:53and super interesting athletes, but they're just the hook.
- 1:57:56And in the first few seconds of this video, the interviewer sort
- 1:58:00of asked him who sort of like is the person behind the camera who
- 1:58:04must be putting all this together.
- 1:58:06I think says something along the lines of, so Clayton, have you
- 1:58:09been up to much? And Clayton sort of just looks
- 1:58:12away into the distance and laughs like as in like, and then
- 1:58:15it's got this like exciting music playing in the background.
- 1:58:18And then it just cuts to like, basically it's just like a
- 1:58:22little teaser. Like, what do you think I've
- 1:58:23been up to? And then it just cuts to him
- 1:58:26doing workouts and him sort of building up.
- 1:58:28And it just the music, the way it's shot is just makes you get
- 1:58:32very excited, makes you want to do a marathon marathon session
- 1:58:35just off the back of it. So yeah, it's sort of the first
- 1:58:38time he's sort of going condiments is, as we said,
- 1:58:40training up for the Chicago Marathon and Clayton Young's
- 1:58:43training up for the World Chance Marathon.
- 1:58:45So yeah, these next few weeks are going to be super exciting.
- 1:58:48I think in terms of how he following his journey in the
- 1:58:52final build, I think he sort of suggests he's at in PB shape and
- 1:58:56doing some of the best workouts of his.
- 1:58:57Life. You'd really wonder, like what
- 1:58:59appearance the money Connor Matz is getting to go to like Chicago
- 1:59:04Marathon over like a world championship, wouldn't you?
- 1:59:06Yeah, Yeah, exactly. Particularly when when you would
- 1:59:10say so the the cool thing about the world champs is unlike a
- 1:59:15world major, it's 3 athletes from every country.
- 1:59:19So you sort of got you're picking 3 Kenyans and three
- 1:59:21Ethiopians and they've got to be fit at that time.
- 1:59:23So you sort of have less athletes like you're you're I
- 1:59:27would say he's potentially a better chance to come top three
- 1:59:31at the world champs than he would at Chicago.
- 1:59:33So like, that's it, you know, to work, walk away from the
- 1:59:37opportunity to be a world like medallist is a lot, right?
- 1:59:41So he'd he'd have to be getting a pretty pretty substantial
- 1:59:44appearance fee. Is Chicago a Nike event?
- 1:59:47I. Don't know.
- 1:59:50Yeah, I'm not sure what the major, major sponsor is, right.
- 1:59:54If they're a major, major shoe brand, potentially it is and
- 1:59:57that's why he gets he's doing it.
- 1:59:59But. What's his Bank of America?
- 2:00:01That's it. Oh, Nike.
- 2:00:02I think Nike is one of them. Yeah, Nike is one of them.
- 2:00:04So maybe he might be in his contract or something.
- 2:00:07Yeah, and potentially like American record, the the money
- 2:00:11associated with breaking the American record would be a lot
- 2:00:14too. Be a big payday.
- 2:00:16Yeah, he's probably looking at not as though like it's one bill
- 2:00:19towards the American record. He's probably like two or three
- 2:00:23years now into like a, if you zoom out a little bit building
- 2:00:26towards this American record Disney, like he's been taking
- 2:00:29small steps here and there with these good marathon results and
- 2:00:33small little PBS stepping towards it.
- 2:00:36So maybe he's just thought now I'm all in on the record.
- 2:00:40Give it, give it this shot because.
- 2:00:42Yeah, that YouTube, YouTube series is awesome.
- 2:00:45Like he's like, yeah, it's right up there.
- 2:00:48Yeah, another mention of that interview with Jake Smith, but
- 2:00:51he mentioned it as well, didn't he, as part of that.
- 2:00:53So it's possibly popped up in his algorithm.
- 2:00:56The latest video. Yeah, it's it's such a good
- 2:00:59watch. And like especially with the in
- 2:01:01this first episode, he actually raced that race that Izzy won
- 2:01:04the other week, didn't he? That beach, the beacon.
- 2:01:06So like it's even more intriguing to kind of see what
- 2:01:09that was like because there's no coverage of it all We saw as
- 2:01:13like Australian slash British Irish public was just a results
- 2:01:17thing, wasn't it? So to see like the actual
- 2:01:20YouTube stuff on it is pretty good as well.
- 2:01:22Yeah. And you probably, we'd probably
- 2:01:24didn't appreciate just how incredible like that win is.
- 2:01:27His win is probably not. It was a bit lost in terms of
- 2:01:30contextually because you don't really know the race, but yeah,
- 2:01:33pretty, pretty special performances.
- 2:01:35Like, I mean, what did Clayton Young finish?
- 2:01:37He might have finished like eighth or something.
- 2:01:39Eighth. Yeah.
- 2:01:40Yeah, and then there he is talking about being a medal
- 2:01:43potential at the world Champs and he finishes 8th in this
- 2:01:46seemingly random 10K race in America.
- 2:01:49All right, thanks for that, Dean.
- 2:01:50I've already watched it, so I know I'll be sat there next week
- 2:01:54waiting for the next drop. I remember in the build to Paris
- 2:01:57one, I was literally like, strangely obsessive with it.
- 2:02:00Like on a Sunday. I'll be sat there like waiting
- 2:02:03for it. Like, why isn't he really
- 2:02:04released it yet? Like, come on.
- 2:02:07And then it seems, yeah, it seems that since then, there's
- 2:02:14like a lot of other athletes have started doing the same
- 2:02:17thing now as well. Whereas at the time, he was like
- 2:02:19one of the only ones that I was actually interested in following
- 2:02:23or aware that they were even doing like this.
- 2:02:25Good content. Well, it'll be getting a message
- 2:02:30this week anyway when he gets tagged in the YouTube Diaries,
- 2:02:33so we'll see. Jake's just released his rent,
- 2:02:37latest rent to Japan video. He's literally in the space
- 2:02:40about recording. Just run another 12 KS, dropped
- 2:02:44a video and we've just fumble our way through another episode.
- 2:02:49Oh God, they just get longer every week.
- 2:02:52How's it got this? I'm not going to say the minutes
- 2:02:55because I've learnt we we shouldn't say that but oh lordy,
- 2:02:59I might not have a wife when I log out of here so.
- 2:03:02Yeah, you. You and me both.
- 2:03:07Double trouble then. Anyone got anything burning?
- 2:03:12No, I'll give you 1 because I'm just tending to like a grumpy,
- 2:03:15miserable injured runner here. So in the Discover in the week,
- 2:03:22I think it popped up like some. I don't like to label people
- 2:03:27like this, but this is how I would label them if I had to
- 2:03:29like a room fluencer type person.
- 2:03:31You know, quite a lot of followers on Instagram trains in
- 2:03:35the gym and has recently started running.
- 2:03:39They put up the post from 1/2 marathon that they've done and
- 2:03:43they were complaining about the course being long compared to
- 2:03:46best driver. And then someone in the comments
- 2:03:49was like, oh me too. I just stopped my what?
- 2:03:53I had to stop my watch like 3 minutes from the end.
- 2:03:56So I was thinking like what the hell is it?
- 2:04:00The course is just the course. Come on.
- 2:04:01Like just forget about your watch.
- 2:04:03And because I've got so riled up by it, I've done some digging
- 2:04:06into this person's actual results because they've been
- 2:04:10posting screenshots from their Strava of their time.
- 2:04:15And I was even looking into their GPS file to see where the
- 2:04:19little finish markers compared to someone who I know would have
- 2:04:22actually obviously ran the course.
- 2:04:25And they've stopped their watch as soon as it hits 21.1 like 300
- 2:04:29meters from the finish screenshot their watch time from
- 2:04:33Strava and like claiming that as the time you go into the actual
- 2:04:37results and their official time is like 2 minutes slower.
- 2:04:40But like people aren't doing this to try and cheat.
- 2:04:42At least they don't think they're not.
- 2:04:43Or like claim a faster PB. They're just genuinely
- 2:04:47uneducated on the fact that your watch isn't measuring to the
- 2:04:50exact centimeter. The courses are satisfied
- 2:04:53courses, therefore it's just fact and you have to just ignore
- 2:04:56it all. You also it's also hard to run
- 2:04:59the exact racing line of a course too.
- 2:05:02So you sort of, you know, you might add a few extra meters,
- 2:05:05but I don't think that allows you to then start cropping your
- 2:05:08activity. This person I think in
- 2:05:11particular had shot themselves in the foot because they'd done
- 2:05:13it once. So therefore they had inaccurate
- 2:05:18or unrealistic PB because they chopped a couple 100 meters off
- 2:05:22their run basically to claim it. So now they're keeping to have
- 2:05:25to do it to so they can cling on to still run the PB in a better
- 2:05:29commas. He should come over to my track.
- 2:05:32It's a short track. Yeah, 336 meters.
- 2:05:36He got a nice 400 meter. PB that that can be my run in
- 2:05:42double trouble and my cyclist double trouble is well, I don't
- 2:05:47understand why cars when they pass yet they leave.
- 2:05:50They they go into the bloody lane of the oncoming traffic.
- 2:05:53Like thanks for not hitting me and wiping me off my bike yet,
- 2:05:57but you don't need to leave like literally a bus with room.
- 2:06:01It's in fact more dangerous for you to go so far over and then
- 2:06:06veer all the way back across. Like just edge out a bit and
- 2:06:09pass. Better to be safe than sorry.
- 2:06:12I'd I'd hope you wouldn't see many of those because you're on
- 2:06:14the cycle path. Well exactly.
- 2:06:16I think he just listened to the episode last week and heard of
- 2:06:19how much of A shit cyclist you are.
- 2:06:21I was like, oh, this guy in the car.
- 2:06:28Probably thinking you might swerve into them so that as you
- 2:06:31get startled, so you're getting locker this week given you're
- 2:06:36sort of a bit injured and like the last thing you want is a
- 2:06:40sore Gooch to add to a sore foot.
- 2:06:42I don't know, it's there's too many costs involved with the
- 2:06:47recovery and stuff from the running and now often start
- 2:06:51spending on cycling. I need to do some planning I
- 2:06:54think. Now do you know that onesie they
- 2:06:56wear where it's like it's like shorts and then it stops like
- 2:07:00here on your arm? Get one of them.
- 2:07:03I'll have my racing bib on my on my quad by the time I come back
- 2:07:07when I own. Yeah, that's the talk about.
- 2:07:11That all right then in terms of what's coming up, we've got 2
- 2:07:14diamond leagues between now and the next meeting between now and
- 2:07:18the next recording. There's one on Wednesday night
- 2:07:20in Switzerland and then there's one next Saturday night in
- 2:07:23Belgium. Keely and Georgia Hunter Bell
- 2:07:26are actually facing off in the 800 on on the Wednesday night 1.
- 2:07:29So that'll be interesting, although I think we've learned
- 2:07:32how that was is likely to go now anyway.
- 2:07:35And then, yeah, there's 5000 meters, 1500 meters, 800 meters.
- 2:07:40So follow along. Thank God we move this recording
- 2:07:43forward, otherwise I think me and Dean will be getting reduced
- 2:07:47sleep tonight. Yeah, big one.
- 2:07:50All right, guys. Thanks very much.
- 2:07:52Wait. Do you have any plans for next
- 2:07:53week or is it just Ron you cycling, Dean, you just.
- 2:07:56Jogging. Yeah mate, we all can't just
- 2:07:58race every other weekend. I'm just jogging as well I.
- 2:08:05Have. A new pair of shoes coming on
- 2:08:07Monday. I've got a new pair of shoes
- 2:08:09actually set at the running center.
- 2:08:11The is it the Adidas? Is it SL?
- 2:08:13Oh yeah, you went for them. So give them a try, see if they
- 2:08:18help, help where where I'm feeling so, but I'll let you
- 2:08:21know next week. And what are you getting on?
- 2:08:23Yeah, I went for the Nike Romero 18.
- 2:08:27Not the plus or anything, just the standard 18.
- 2:08:29Just for recovery. Runs like a nice soft shoe to
- 2:08:32protect my precious legs. Oh lovely, we can hear.
- 2:08:37Going there. We, yeah, we there in the
- 2:08:40backgrounds that time we. Time to end recording.
- 2:08:43Catch that time? Right, guys.
- 2:08:46I'm just looking at the at the Eagles Dean, they're getting
- 2:08:49beat 112 to 32. Yeah, it's good for them, the.
- 2:08:55Good when you at least we know when our team shit, it's the
- 2:08:58it's the hope that gets you and the good thing is I have little
- 2:09:01to no hope. You yeah, ask the other W
- 2:09:04Australian teams, Fremantle and there's genuinely a lot of hype
- 2:09:08around, you know, flag Mantle and this being the year that
- 2:09:10they're going to win the premiership.
- 2:09:12And yeah, they got done by 56 points on Friday night, so
- 2:09:16they're the ones you feel for. Because they they've never won
- 2:09:20one, have they not? No.
- 2:09:21So they joined the competition in 95.
- 2:09:24I think the Eagles were like 8687.
- 2:09:27So maybe less than 10 years after the Eagles.
- 2:09:29And Eagles have won four premierships I think pre Mantle
- 2:09:340. You like to remind Dockers fans
- 2:09:36that they're yet to win one. Yeah, I think that's the,
- 2:09:39because Fremantle's like on the like a port city in Perth and
- 2:09:44then they mentioned what's the only ship not to dock in
- 2:09:47Fremantle and that's the premiership.
- 2:09:52Hey. I'll take that one into work
- 2:09:54tomorrow. That's.
- 2:09:55A good one. And then Owen will be seeing how
- 2:09:58United get on later. Our fingers crossed one.
- 2:10:02New look Frontline. New look frontline but it could
- 2:10:05be, it could be bad. Arsenal are very a very good
- 2:10:09team and you could get anything with United these days.
- 2:10:12So I take a nil nil draw. The United mentality.
- 2:10:17Yeah, it's changed. Let's actually end this.
- 2:10:22See. You next week.
