Mobile County mourns the loss of Sheriff Sam Cochran, who passed away peacefully at 71 after a half-century of dedicated public service. Rising through the Mobile Police Department for 30 years—including 10 as chief—he became sheriff in 2006, serving 16 years and winning four re-elections. A native of Mobile, he earned advanced degrees from the University of South Alabama and trained at the FBI National Academy.
