- 0:00Speaker 1: Jason Campbell, the football coach, obviously headed to Temple this weekend.
- 0:05Speaker 1: We're going to talk about the Owls in a minute.
- 0:07Speaker 1: They had a great win at South Florida, and they
- 0:10Speaker 1: are 2-3 as well. But, Coach, we're going to talk
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Sincere Bowers here in a couple minutes, and what
- 0:15Speaker 1: a breakout game he had to transfer from West Virginia.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Played 10 games there last year. He gained 249 yards.
- 0:23Speaker 1: But in this one against Syracuse, 16 carries, 163. a
- 0:28Speaker 1: 71 yard touchdown. I got to ask him about that one.
- 0:30Speaker 1: That was a huge hole on the right side. That
- 0:33Speaker 1: was a big play for the Huskies. And it looked
- 0:35Speaker 1: like he really picked up the slack with Kenji Christian
- 0:39Speaker 1: unable to go.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, credit that kid and his preparation and him,
- 0:43Speaker 2: you know, knowing he's one play away from being the
- 0:45Speaker 2: premier guy. He's got valuable experience. He's first four or
- 0:48Speaker 2: five games. And yeah, it's obvious to see what he
- 0:53Speaker 2: can do when the ball's in his hands and we've
- 0:54Speaker 2: got to continue to find creative ways to get it
- 0:56Speaker 2: to him and And, you know, but those guys did
- 0:59Speaker 2: a really good job up front the whole entire second
- 1:01Speaker 2: half of really neutralizing that front. And our ability to
- 1:04Speaker 2: run the football helped. But there was a lot of
- 1:06Speaker 2: really good give and take when it came to the
- 1:08Speaker 2: run game and being able to set up some good
- 1:10Speaker 2: play action passes because our ability to run the football.
- 1:12Speaker 2: And a lot of that credit goes to, you know,
- 1:15Speaker 2: obviously sincere, but the guys up front as well.
- 1:18Speaker 1: You go into halftime, you're down, well, you're down 27-7
- 1:22Speaker 1: with a couple minutes left at halftime. Before halftime, how
- 1:25Speaker 1: important is it to get on the scoreboard? I felt
- 1:27Speaker 1: like that was a big deal because at least you
- 1:30Speaker 1: have momentum. Now you're back within two scores. There's a
- 1:33Speaker 1: ball game to be played in those last 30 minutes.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Well, you don't want to be down 20 and not
- 1:37Speaker 2: have the first possession out of the half, right? I mean,
- 1:41Speaker 2: you're only going to get so many opportunities in the
- 1:43Speaker 2: second half and you have to take advantage of it.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I felt like we were going to get probably six
- 1:48Speaker 2: possessions in the second half and we had to produce
- 1:50Speaker 2: some type of points on four of them, preferably touchdowns
- 1:52Speaker 2: on all of them if we were going to have
- 1:53Speaker 2: a chance to win the football game. And, you know,
- 1:57Speaker 2: we made the most of most of our opportunities there. And,
- 2:00Speaker 2: you know, credit our kids for just hanging in there
- 2:02Speaker 2: and competing. And, you know, and we, like I said,
- 2:04Speaker 2: when we were able to, you know, get some, you know,
- 2:06Speaker 2: some positive runs. I mean, the big explosive plays, they happen.
- 2:10Speaker 2: But I'm talking about the fives, six and sevens. and
- 2:13Speaker 2: continuously being able to stay ahead of the sticks that
- 2:15Speaker 2: really allowed us to continue to stay, you know, a
- 2:17Speaker 2: little bit more rhythmic offensively than even though the scoreboard
- 2:21Speaker 2: was not in our favor most of the time. Usually
- 2:24Speaker 2: when a scoreboard gets like that, you get into pass
- 2:26Speaker 2: happy mode and you really, it's feast or famine and
- 2:28Speaker 2: it can shut you down pretty quickly. So credit our
- 2:31Speaker 2: players and our coaches for just hanging in there and executing.
- 2:35Speaker 1: So when you came out of the locker room to
- 2:37Speaker 1: start the third quarter, it looked like at least like
- 2:41Speaker 1: you were going to, make a sustained effort to run
- 2:45Speaker 1: the football regardless. The scoreboard said you were down, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 1: two scores, but I thought that showed great patience and
- 2:52Speaker 1: a lot of confidence in the ability to run the
- 2:54Speaker 1: ball because you got back in it like that, I thought.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Well, you can, you know, you can only do what
- 3:00Speaker 2: the defense gives you. I mean, we're not going to,
- 3:02Speaker 2: it's bad coaching to ask offensive linemen, you know, five
- 3:06Speaker 2: offensive linemen to block six defenders or, you know, seven-man
- 3:09Speaker 2: blocking front to block eight defenders and vice versa. I mean, it's, yeah,
- 3:13Speaker 2: we want to pass. We want to get back in
- 3:14Speaker 2: the game. But the defense knows that, and they know
- 3:16Speaker 2: they're playing with a big lead. So, you know, you
- 3:19Speaker 2: got to take what they give you if you want
- 3:20Speaker 2: to be effective moving the football. And look, like, it's
- 3:23Speaker 2: not going to all come back to you in one play, right?
- 3:26Speaker 2: You got to be able to, you know, really, you
- 3:29Speaker 2: got 30 minutes. You don't have to do it all
- 3:31Speaker 2: in 38 seconds. So, yeah, credit our kids for hanging
- 3:34Speaker 2: in there. And like I said, our coaches were putting
- 3:35Speaker 2: a good plan together and executing it.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Yeah, coming back from 20 twice in that game. We're
- 3:39Speaker 1: going to get to overtime in a second because that's
- 3:42Speaker 1: crazy anyway. But fourth downs, Coach, lots of fourth downs
- 3:45Speaker 1: in that game. And the conversion rates by both teams
- 3:48Speaker 1: were really good. You mentioned there, too, I mean, that
- 3:51Speaker 1: were just backbreaking. But you had to do things on
- 3:54Speaker 1: fourth down as well. I mean, when you look at
- 3:56Speaker 1: that as the guy calling plays, does the playbook, like,
- 4:00Speaker 1: open up a certain direction? Because you only get one
- 4:03Speaker 1: shot at getting that first down on fourth.
- 4:06Speaker 2: To me, it goes back to how you view the
- 4:08Speaker 2: other downs. I mean, to me, it's do or die
- 4:11Speaker 2: on every down, right? So first and 10, you, you
- 4:14Speaker 2: have to, there's a progression you want. You want to
- 4:16Speaker 2: stay ahead of the sticks and you want to make
- 4:18Speaker 2: sure the right play happens. And if you're, if you're
- 4:21Speaker 2: process oriented that way and you, you emphasize, you know,
- 4:24Speaker 2: what a successful play looks like in all the situations,
- 4:26Speaker 2: then fourth down shouldn't, you know, be the end of
- 4:29Speaker 2: the world to you. If you view first and second
- 4:31Speaker 2: down as a waste down, you know, I mean, view
- 4:33Speaker 2: it as baseball, right? I mean, You know, there's there's
- 4:35Speaker 2: elite hitters are really good on a three to count
- 4:38Speaker 2: because they take that just as serious as they take
- 4:40Speaker 2: the first pitch of that bat. Right. So, you know,
- 4:43Speaker 2: where's your energy at? Where's your where's your focus at?
- 4:46Speaker 2: And if you can do that and be really good
- 4:48Speaker 2: in the early downs on, you know, focus on what
- 4:50Speaker 2: you need to do, you should be good in the
- 4:51Speaker 2: conversion piece of it. So I think it all comes
- 4:53Speaker 2: back to your philosophy on how how you view the downside,
- 4:56Speaker 2: you know, the down sequencing and what that's going to
- 4:58Speaker 2: look like.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Coming back like you did and making it a game
- 5:02Speaker 1: and then getting the lead, big picture. You mentioned Miami, Ohio.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Maybe you didn't see that same kind of stick-to-itiveness, but
- 5:11Speaker 1: I thought that was the case against Syracuse. How did
- 5:14Speaker 1: you view that? Did you say, okay, we lost this game,
- 5:17Speaker 1: but we battled back from some serious deficits to get
- 5:21Speaker 1: a lead in the game. I mean, that has to
- 5:23Speaker 1: be something you can build on going forward.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, you're guaranteed 12 opportunities to play a game. And,
- 5:30Speaker 2: you know, roughly each one of those games are three
- 5:32Speaker 2: to three and a half hours. You're looking anywhere between
- 5:34Speaker 2: 36 and 40 hours of football in a season. A
- 5:37Speaker 2: young man's guaranteed to play. And if we're going to
- 5:41Speaker 2: make all of our assumptions based off of a year's
- 5:44Speaker 2: worth of work and 30, you know, 36 hours, like,
- 5:48Speaker 2: you know, I mean, man, there's more times than not,
- 5:51Speaker 2: that's going to be an empty feeling. So I think
- 5:53Speaker 2: that you got to find the silver lining. You know,
- 5:55Speaker 2: like I said, I don't, there's no moral victories in football.
- 5:57Speaker 2: You want to win every game. And I do too. Um,
- 6:00Speaker 2: but I, you know, I need our kids in our,
- 6:02Speaker 2: in our locker room to believe that, you know, we,
- 6:04Speaker 2: we have a really good team and, you know, maybe
- 6:08Speaker 2: right now it's not showing that when you just pick up,
- 6:10Speaker 2: you know, the box score and you look at the
- 6:12Speaker 2: record right now, but we got, um, we've got a
- 6:15Speaker 2: good group, you know, are we young?
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yes.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Are we fighting through some tough things and some adverse moments? Yeah.
- 6:20Speaker 2: But man, oh man, a lot, a lot to be
- 6:22Speaker 2: proud about in that game. Um, not acceptable to accept,
- 6:25Speaker 2: accept defeat, but, uh, not acceptable either to, you're going
- 6:29Speaker 2: to feel like it's an indictment of your character because
- 6:32Speaker 2: you lost a football game by one point in overtime.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Yeah, Bill Parcells once said, you are what your record
- 6:37Speaker 1: says you are. But in this case, you're 2-3 to me.
- 6:40Speaker 1: You could be 4-1. It wouldn't be that impossible to
- 6:44Speaker 1: say something like that. We'll take a quick timeout back
- 6:47Speaker 1: with Jason Candle. We'll talk a little bit about the
- 6:50Speaker 1: upcoming opponent, Temple. A little bit about Hayden Pegg, a
- 6:53Speaker 1: guy who walked on and has been around UConn for
- 6:55Speaker 1: a few seasons, getting a shot to play now. with
- 6:58Speaker 1: the Huskies. It's coming up next on Learfield.
