- 0:00We can start without then we don't need them. We can definitely get it
- 0:03going. Opening standment from coach Ori Emma. Uh. You know sometimes you
- 0:14sometimes you put together, uh an idea, you know, you put together
- 0:20a plan with your team, and you think that if we can execute some
- 0:25of this plan will be we'll be in pretty good shape. We'll give ourselves
- 0:28a chance to win. And every once in a while, you know,
- 0:33it kind of comes out exactly how how you imagined that it could come out.
- 0:43You know, we knew, we knew that defensively we needed to play
- 0:50really really well, and it was even better than I imagined. And obviously,
- 0:54you know, when when a score is like that, you need help
- 0:58from the other team. And I think they missed a lot of shots that
- 1:00they normally make, which that's what happens sometimes, you know. But the
- 1:08way we you know, the way we carried each other was probably the most
- 1:15impressive thing for me is that we we relied on on on each other so
- 1:22much. Obviously, Paige, you know, did page things, but everybody
- 1:32today was really a team a team triumph, It really really was. It
- 1:38was. It was pretty special to be a part of that. I wish
- 1:42this was tomorrow, which today was Monday. Unfortunately it's not. Let's start
- 1:49with questions for Page or Ice. Wait for the microphone. Please state your
- 1:53name and affiliation. Roger Grad Roger Cleveland from the whatever, Republican American.
- 2:00First of all, was it your decision to jump and you turned to the
- 2:04team and flexed? I mean, was that what was going on there?
- 2:08It was sort of a discussion. It wasn't long I was gonna win that
- 2:13discussion, but I was. Once we found out Alla wasn't playing. It
- 2:16was either me or Ice, and I was like, yeah, I got
- 2:19it. But because she jumped against was one of her teammates and she let
- 2:23her do it. Nah, she didn't let me do that. But anyway,
- 2:28Uh, yeah, I don't know if they had the most confidence in
- 2:31me, like the comments that I had to myself to win the jump ball.
- 2:34So I just let him know a little bit. I wanted to put
- 2:38Nash in there and do our best Eddie Goodell, but they don't know who
- 2:42he is, so it would have fallen on deaf years. Question from Pat
- 2:47in the front left Patty and rubbed with the associated press. Paige with Lea.
- 2:53You obviously knew going into the game that you were going to need to
- 2:55do a little bit more. What did What was your mindset going into the
- 3:00game and getting your teammates confidence up? Uh, my mindset really was I
- 3:06was focused on rebounding with Aliah out. That's a huge piece that we're missing.
- 3:10Alia grabs every single rebound that comes off the rim. I mean,
- 3:15just leading the communication with our group. I thought me and I did a
- 3:20really good job of talking on the switches on winder guard who in the post.
- 3:24Try to keep her inside as much try to keep me outside, But
- 3:29just communicating, leading by example, leading by passion, leading, buy the
- 3:32energy that I played with, and just leave it all on the floor.
- 3:38We know what we don't have, but we didn't want to focus on that.
- 3:40We wanted to focus who was on the floor, and we were confident
- 3:44in anybody that we put out there. So just rebounding and communicating was the
- 3:47focus. Question the middle here from Maggie maggievenny cc in center. I used
- 3:53to know you knew that you'd be stepping in today and likely playing the whole
- 3:55game, which you did. How do you prepare for that mentally knowing that
- 3:59there is no one else to come in for you. I mean, I
- 4:02feel like in practice, you know, coach, coaches, teammates me do
- 4:06a great job of trying to simulate that going as hard as we can.
- 4:11He talks about the more you run the floor, the better you'll get at
- 4:13that. So just that week leading up, I tried to push myself as
- 4:15much, and obviously we didn't expect to not have a leah, but I
- 4:19feel like just preparing definitely paid off, and I felt I felt good out
- 4:26there too. Front Row brad High Page Bradley w NBA twish your team had
- 4:32a lot of success in the paint this afternoon. Did do you see Marquette
- 4:39do anything differently on defense or did you have to adjust any offense for you
- 4:45to really get under the room today? It was a focus before the game.
- 4:53We're undersized starting lineup, which has sort of weaknesses on the defensive end,
- 4:58but it makes them, if they go big, have to one of
- 5:01their biggs has to guard one of our guards. So it was a huge
- 5:03emphasis to get in the paint, create, try to attack mismatches whoever had
- 5:10the big guy on them, and then create from there. So a huge
- 5:14emphasis going into the game was getting into the pain and creating from there.
- 5:17Question up from from dom Dom Memory hart Ford Current page. The way you
- 5:23guys came out very aggressive, very disruptive, even though you couldn't afford to
- 5:29get in foul trouble. It seems like you put them back on their heels
- 5:31right away and that they never really recovered from that. Is that what you
- 5:34guys, You guys were trying to do, knowing your position to to try
- 5:39to get that kind of jump them a little bit. Yeah, we wanted
- 5:42to start the game aggressive, sort of set the tone of what the rest
- 5:45of the game looked like. But we talked about it in the huddle leading
- 5:47up to the game in the locker room of just how focused and locked in
- 5:51we were gonna have to be, especially like you said, defensively not getting
- 5:56into foul trouble, but also wanting to disrupt their offense and what they do
- 6:00on their flow. So I thought just starting a game out like that sort
- 6:02of setting the tone. I thought we did a great job of that,
- 6:08balancing being aggressive and being smart at the same time. Question in the middle
- 6:12from Emily Emily Adams hark for current Ice Markeutz coach just talked a little bit
- 6:16about your defense today. Just how much do you feel like you've grown in
- 6:19that aspect of your game and how did you kind of navigate the matchup with
- 6:23Carlin today? I feel like that was, yeah, definitely an emphasis leading
- 6:27up to the game with them having two post players, trying to, like
- 6:30we said, trying to navigate that, lots of film watching, how to
- 6:34you know, read the duck in. Definitely struggle with that, and he
- 6:40gave me a hard time about that, so I made sure that I was
- 6:42locked in he who's he? Yeah? Yeah, So I just I would
- 6:47say, definitely an emphasis from the coaches, but done a great job of
- 6:51like watching that film and going over a lot in practice making sure that they
- 6:57don't get that position, because again, once you know, they get it
- 7:00over. So question the back right corner. Hi, Kristen prec market wire.
- 7:05This is for either of you. So at the beginning of the third
- 7:09quart yesterday, Providence made a little bit of run to kind of get back
- 7:12in the game, But today Marquette just really have any response. So how
- 7:15did you kind of use the energy coming out of the second half and you
- 7:17know, just like really blow them out of the park, especially after you
- 7:20hit the buzzer beat at the end of the third quarter. Page Yeah,
- 7:25learning from yesterday, we wanted to come out and be aggressive the same way
- 7:30that we started the game. We wanted to start the half that way and
- 7:33again said the tone for what the rest of the half I was gonna look
- 7:35like. No game is won in the first twenty minutes, so we really
- 7:40emphasized that in the locker room that we needed to finish the last twenty minutes
- 7:44and play and leave it all in the court and start that third quarter strong.
- 7:48Maggie again for as and this is only your first postseason still your second
- 7:53post season game, what was the best of advice, either Aliyah or what
- 7:56in the upperclassman gave you about what it takes to play in this time of
- 7:58the year. Just being locked in everything matters at this point, and I
- 8:03would say not wanting to have this be, you know, our last game
- 8:07go home, And I felt like that really stuck with me. So whatever
- 8:11I was feeling like mentally, if I was frustrated, whatever, there was
- 8:15no time for feelings or anything like that, and just making sure that I
- 8:18needed to do whatever I needed to do to make sure, you know,
- 8:20our team was locked in and we won, and I feel like we did
- 8:24that teamates did a good job of keeping us like all focused on the same
- 8:28goal and so yeah, just knowing that we have one goal in comment,
- 8:33I feel like really helped us just lock in and whatever mistakes happened happened,
- 8:37and we just moved on and you know, focused on what the task was.
- 8:41Good time for two more right up front, we'll go Pat and then
- 8:43Roger Paige ub. You held them to no points in the fourth quarter,
- 8:50twelve baskets on fifty four shots. Can we just talk about the defensive effort
- 8:54in this game and the intensity and what did you think you guys did better
- 9:00in this game than you have like all season. I think the biggest thing
- 9:05was the communication, the way we talked, the way we prepared in our
- 9:09shoot around. Marquet's a really disciplined team and the offense that they run,
- 9:13so for us, it was trying to disrupt what they're comfortable with and try
- 9:18to get in passing lanes, deny their shooters, Me and Ice holding the
- 9:24paint down, holding the paint down. But nah, I think the communication
- 9:31was the biggest piece. We knew we didn't have Allyah in the paint to
- 9:35get the rebounds to protect us. So we definitely had to lock in the
- 9:39extra, communicate extra, and just pay attention to the scout and their tendencies.
- 9:46Paige, can you describe what it was like to be out there playing
- 9:52that hard for so long? I mean, did you feel momentum, did
- 9:56you feel the energy? You guys just look so locked in. What did
- 10:01it feel like? Yeah? From the opening tip, when we went on
- 10:07that seven our run to start the game, you just felt the hunger and
- 10:11the passion and the energy that we had. But it helped to get a
- 10:15strong start like that, but it continued throughout the whole entire game because we
- 10:18knew coming in that we had to play a full forty minutes. Market's a
- 10:22great team and they could go on a run at any point. So just
- 10:26to have that energy and the passion that we were playing with, it becomes
- 10:30contagious within each other. And anytime or can't went on a run or we
- 10:35went through a drought, we stayed composed, stayed confident, and just kept
- 10:39playing our game. Page Ice, thank you to let you guys get back
- 10:43to the locker room. Thank you appreciate it. Good luck tomorrow. Questions
- 10:50for coach Ficky go ahead. You know, Page talks about leaving it all
- 10:58on on the court. Can you just speak to how like I mean she
- 11:05does that. You know, you said like how competitive she is, but
- 11:09just she was like crawling on the floor for rebounds and hitting that shot at
- 11:13the end of the third quarter. Just how much she did today. It's
- 11:20it's remarkable. I think the way players like Page can sum it up exactly
- 11:31what's needed in any given oh Man, any given game, and to then
- 11:39be able to execute it. And she's one of those unique superstars that wants
- 11:48to be that at both ends of the floor. You know, not every
- 11:52not everyone values those same things. She she gets a lot of enjoyment out
- 12:01of you know, the rebounding that she can do, you know, the
- 12:05block shots, the steals, stealing the inbounds pass, you know, on
- 12:11out of bounds play. She she just has a great sense of the game
- 12:18and what's happening next. And I think that's probably why she's never surprised,
- 12:26because I think she always knows what's happening next. And obviously, you know,
- 12:31our players feed off of that, and they feed off of her.
- 12:37You don't. You don't come across players like that very often. You know,
- 12:41we've been fortunate here at Connecticut. But she's she's different. That's it.
- 12:50She's different, and that's evident every time you see her play, and
- 12:56the bigger the game, the more different she becomes. It's hard to explain
- 13:05sometimes. Question up front from Brad Hi, you know, Brad from w
- 13:09NBA Swish. You mentioned in your opening statement about it being a team triumph.
- 13:16Can you speak of how and why everyone just communicates so well together on
- 13:24the floor that they seem to always be in the right place at the right
- 13:28time. It's been a it's been a real struggle trying to try and incorporate
- 13:39our veterans where our young players they're on two different wavelengths a lot of times.
- 13:46Now you've got three of them out there, so they had the majority
- 13:52today. You know, there was three of them and even if they got
- 13:58it wrong, they were all wrong, so in the sense they were right.
- 14:03The communication was really good today. You know, we talked about when
- 14:07we left shoot around this morning and we said the guys that there's always guys
- 14:11on the Florida know exactly what's going on the dangers when they don't say anything.
- 14:16So there's always people on the Florida that will never know what's going on.
- 14:20But today the emphasis was the players that actually know what's going on need
- 14:26to talk, and I mean talk NonStop the entire game. And you other
- 14:31guys that don't know anything, you need to listen and just do what they
- 14:33tell you. And today was about as good an example of that as you
- 14:39can imagine. Question in the back from Joe Gino Joe's own channel three in
- 14:46the back when you drew it up pregame for your team and for Ice,
- 14:50was this about as close as what you expected to get from her today?
- 14:54Yeah? Yeah, I would say the presence that she has in the lane
- 15:07was going to be a huge factor for us. As long as she stayed
- 15:13out of out trouble and could be that presence in the lane, then we
- 15:16just had to play around her. You know, there were a couple of
- 15:18times when what happens is, you know, the way Marquette plays, you
- 15:22know, there's a lot of movement in their offense, and what we didn't
- 15:26want to happen was Ice wandering out on the perimeter to go guard people,
- 15:31which we would let Alia do. But you know, that needed to change
- 15:35today. So we just needed to make sure that the other players were like,
- 15:43she was kind of like hopefully, you know, like a bicycle,
- 15:46you know, She's kind of like the hub there, you know, and
- 15:48everybody tried to play around her and keep her in the spot where she could
- 15:52be most successful, and it worked out about there were parts and shoot around
- 15:56this morning when I thought, we can't do this, We can't, this
- 16:00is not going to be possible, because they were all looking at each other
- 16:03like what are we doing here? And we stayed with it and we didn't
- 16:10have to deviate from it, which you know doesn't always work that way.
- 16:15You got to have a plan B. We did have a plan B.
- 16:18It wasn't very good, but we didn't have to go to it. Roger
- 16:22front left, Roger Cleveland from the Waterbury Republican American. You know, what's
- 16:26the last time you remembered playing with this effort? I mean, you guys
- 16:30have played tremendous games for the last thirty years, but the effort just seemed
- 16:36at another level today where guys were just constantly harassing the ball or hustling back
- 16:41or cutting through people. There have been times there have been teams that we've
- 16:48had here. Those of you that have followed us for a long time that
- 16:56it wasn't that big a deal we held somebody to five points and a half
- 17:02because we just overwhelmed people with our numbers too, not just with our talent,
- 17:06but with our numbers that we were able to keep the pressure on for
- 17:08an entire game. Today was different in that it had to be that way
- 17:15without the ability to replace you if fatigue set in or foul issues. So
- 17:26to play that that hard for that long a period of time without getting a
- 17:33chance to get get a breather, to me, was about as impressive as
- 17:40anything that we've done, you know, not just in this tournament, but
- 17:45it's been a long time since I've seen anything like this when there was that
- 17:49much asked of you know, so few players. Second rule in the rate
- 18:00coachsa Johnson from NBM line on the scaler one attend to pay you back off
- 18:06that statement, how impressed were you? Everybody's going to see about ice and
- 18:10page and about the points they scored, But defensive wise, you guys were
- 18:14very impressive. How impressed on the scaler one to ten were you with their
- 18:17defense today? I don't know that it could have been any better. It
- 18:23was. It was very It was it was difficult for for them to get
- 18:29the looks that they wanted, and when those looks did materialize, it was
- 18:34a rush for them. And you know, you're in a conference tournament,
- 18:41you're trying to win the tournament. You're playing a team that's a little bit
- 18:48wounded, and we get off to the start that we got. It makes
- 18:56it difficult to make shots, and that's what youuation, because every shot becomes
- 19:00huge. When you're winning, you know, it's easy to make shots.
- 19:04But I think the fact that we came out the way we did and we
- 19:07kept the pressure on it made every jump shot, every shot that they took
- 19:12crucial for them. And it's hard to go through a whole game like that,
- 19:18and our defense was you know, we sustained it for the entire forty
- 19:22minutes. Question from Mike in the back left Gino Mikey Anthony from Hurst,
- 19:26can you share your version of how the discussions went about who would take the
- 19:30jump ball? And more importantly, Gino, she she wins the tip and
- 19:34then has like a little muscle flex and you guys all seem to get a
- 19:38chuckle out of it, and then of course she goes and scores right away.
- 19:42What did that sequence her adding some personality and of course two points right
- 19:47away due to just kind of set everyone at ease. Yeah, it's getting
- 19:51kind of old because she did it down at the other end when she blocked
- 19:52the shot late in the game. So, you know, spending time in
- 20:00the weight room all of a sudden, I guess, gives you the you
- 20:03know, the feeling that that's you know that you're maya more now all of
- 20:07a sudden. But she takes a lot of pride in doing things that people
- 20:15maybe think that she can't do, and she says so much, like you're
- 20:21not even privy to any of this, but she says so much. She
- 20:26she talks about herself so much in a positive way. This is what I'm
- 20:30going to do, Like she actually tells them this is what I'm going to
- 20:33do, not in a bad way. It's just NonStop that when she does
- 20:38it, it's almost like I told you I was going to do it,
- 20:41and it's it's fun. It's fun to be around that. But at the
- 20:45same time, we're all rooting for her not to get it done so we
- 20:47can make fun of her. But there's just something in her that is I
- 21:00can't describe. Could you never know whether it's real or she's putting on a
- 21:03happy face. But there is nothing, literally nothing that she thinks that if
- 21:11she sets her mind to it, that she can't do. Like she ran
- 21:15around the court after that buzzer beater her at the end of the third quarter,
- 21:19whoever it was, she knew what was going in, and you know,
- 21:25that's how she is. She knew it was going in, but then
- 21:26she likes to celebrate, like I told you, So that's you don't find
- 21:32kids like that anymore. First they're they don't have the gusts to say it
- 21:36before they're going to do it. And then if they do, you know,
- 21:41which it's hard to do. But she's yeah, she's different. She's
- 21:49different. And every kid on the team without her, they're not as good.
- 21:56Without her, they're not as good. And they're good, don't get
- 21:59me wrong, But without her, the pressure on them would be so immense
- 22:03that I'm not sure they'd be able to handle. Tom. Go ahead,
- 22:07Tom a morey hurt for current. You know, I guess we're kind of
- 22:11dancing around the same topics here, But the way you guys started the game
- 22:14kind of almost as I mentioned, put them in back on their heels.
- 22:18It almost looked like this was the program that was trying to win something for
- 22:22the first time. Yeah, and they were the ones that maybe had won
- 22:25a lot of different Like, you guys are playing like the underdogs. How
- 22:27do you coach that? How do you bring that out? Is that all
- 22:30page is that response to the circumstances. How do you get that attitude from
- 22:34the program that's that's done with this? What you guys have done? Well?
- 22:41A couple of things happened. One, we did not necessarily plan to
- 22:49play the first five minutes. The way we ended up playing, the strategy
- 22:56was a little bit different. And then right before introductions, we said,
- 23:07how about if we just stick to the way we've been playing, don't change
- 23:11anything, and just be very, very disruptive as disruptive as we can.
- 23:15Because the initial game plan was we can't be like that because we can't risk
- 23:19the foul problems. But when I said, I knew it. This is
- 23:23what they wanted. So when I said it, there collectively, yes,
- 23:29that's how we want to play. So we went and just went with our
- 23:33regular routine. But the thing that was that was talked about a lot in
- 23:40the locker room how often does a Connecticut team go into a game where you
- 23:47actually kind of are the underdog that they go, how can you possibly win
- 23:52with five players and missing an All American? I said, you know,
- 23:59how fortunate of you guys are the Connecticut players are never in that situation.
- 24:03I said. But at the same time, so we're not the underdog because
- 24:10we're we're better than that. So I don't want you to think that we're
- 24:14the underdog, but that's the perception that's going to be out there. But
- 24:17we're better than them, and if we play our a game, we're going
- 24:19to win. And Nika said to me at pregame this morning, she goes,
- 24:26I feel really good about today, Like I'm really confident and I'm not
- 24:30faking either. She says, I really, I really feel really good about
- 24:34it. And I think that was the kind of that permeated the entire team.
- 24:42You know, can you can you give an update on Aaliyah? Uh?
- 24:48You know, the swelling and the being able to you know, people
- 24:51think you just slap a mask on and you're good to go, but you
- 24:52have to be able to breathe, you know, and you have to you
- 24:57know, not have headaches and no concussions. Which was great. So now
- 25:04it's just a matter when are you comfortable? Is it tomorrow? I don't
- 25:10know. I doubt it, but who knows. But I would say by
- 25:18two weeks from yesterday, we'll be good to go. We'll be right right
- 25:22right back to normal. Yes, way broken, it's way broken. We
- 25:30have time for two more. We'll go to Doug and the left coach,
- 25:33Doug Farnberg Gape. Over the last three years, you've had a lot of
- 25:37one name stars and Diana Sue maya page. It seems now there's so many
- 25:42spread across the country of Paige, Caitlin, Angel Juju keep on going.
- 25:48Yeah, can you remember a time that their star power is what it is
- 25:51now spread out across the country and potentially there's probably more on the women's side
- 25:56for the first time than there's the men's side. Uh. Yeah. I've
- 26:03always said that that it's good and bad that the guys get to like,
- 26:07spend one year in college and then leave the best ones. But they also
- 26:11don't become household names, you know, and they don't get a chance to
- 26:14create that stardom for themselves. They're like here and they're gone, which you
- 26:19know, most of those guys would trade a little bit of stardom for the
- 26:22money that they're going to make. When all those players that you mentioned were
- 26:29playing, there were a lot of really good players. They happen a lot
- 26:32of times to be on the same team. So now they are spread out
- 26:36more. There were a lot of really good players back then that became WNBA
- 26:41greats, became Hall of famers, Olympians from across the country. There's just
- 26:48never been this much attention paid to women's basketball. So now it's really really
- 26:53evident who that they're stars out there in this game, whereas before I think
- 27:02they were there, but nobody wanted to acknowledge it and appreciate it as much.
- 27:07And finally, to your point, they're just really good and everybody's going
- 27:15around telling everybody how good they are, and they're all visible. It's not
- 27:22just yukon Tennessee on TV, you know, And that's the one game to
- 27:25everybody in America watches. Those kids are on TV a lot, they're in
- 27:29the limelight a lot, and they know how to handle it because they're used
- 27:33to it. Now it's going to get even better. So many kids coming
- 27:38out of high school are just unbelievably good and they're not all going to the
- 27:44same schools unfortunately for me. Last question, Emily, just a little bit
- 27:53off topic. What we've seen Jana warm up the last couple of days and
- 27:56all that. Just how is she progressing and what are you guys kind of
- 28:00hoping to accomplish getting her out there. Yeah, you know, obviously there's
- 28:03a routine to that timetable, and our doctors and our athletic trainers, you
- 28:11know, they've got them, they've got the menu. Every day, this
- 28:15is where and then at this time, how many months, this is what
- 28:21we're gonna do a little by little. Obviously she's been dying to get out
- 28:25there and do some things. The more we see her out there, the
- 28:33more we see her running around, the more we see some of the things
- 28:34she does, the more with the more we miss her, you know,
- 28:38because we realize what she could bring to our team. The only unfortunate thing
- 28:48for her is, you know, round the down starts this week, so
- 28:53she's you know, she's walking around with bags of food getting ready stock up.
- 29:00That's the you know, that's the only right now, that's the only
- 29:03thing that's on her schedule that you know, everything everything else on her schedule
- 29:11is what times my rehab, What am I allowed to do? What time
- 29:15are my class? Like, she has no life other than rehab because she
- 29:18wants to play so bad. I can't wait for people to see her play.
- 29:26She just has a real unique personality that I think people are going to
- 29:33really fall in love with. Coach. Thank you, thank you.
