Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: This mediate podcast. Welcome to meet either Trivia, the only
- 0:12Speaker 1: game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer
- 0:15Speaker 1: new Hearth, and today we're joined by Steve ronnella Ryan Callahan,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Brodie Henderson, Seth, Morris Chesti, Floyd grin Schneider, Dr Jonathan Riceman. Now, John,
- 0:26Speaker 1: this is your first time playing Trivia. How do you
- 0:28Speaker 1: feel about your chances? So? So okay? Are you familiar
- 0:32Speaker 1: with the show? Do you listen? And how do you
- 0:33Speaker 1: normally perform? Depends on the topic, But so, so okay?
- 0:38Speaker 1: What what would be of the four categories that would
- 0:41Speaker 1: be a strong category in a week one? You think?
- 0:43Speaker 1: Can you remind me of the four categories hunting, fishing, conservation,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and cooking. He's gonna dominate cooking. Okay, yeah probably, I
- 0:52Speaker 1: mean yeah, hunting, conservation and cooking the only So. So, now,
- 0:57Speaker 1: before we play, we need you to weigh in on
- 1:00Speaker 1: Seth having mercury poison. Seth, give him some details about
- 1:03Speaker 1: what you were eating and what you were feeling. Oh,
- 1:06Speaker 1: let's say in ah, I'd say two weeks time. Um, well,
- 1:13Speaker 1: I should say in a month's time. Over my meals
- 1:16Speaker 1: were fish, um like KOBEA and like stuff like that.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I was having some like fish remocal reservoirs here too,
- 1:26Speaker 1: but um yeah, big plagic stuff. And at a certain point,
- 1:32Speaker 1: like my hands started going numb and I was having
- 1:35Speaker 1: like real fuzzy like memory loss stuff. Those are like
- 1:40Speaker 1: only the two symptoms that I can nail down. But
- 1:43Speaker 1: and then you stopped eating the fish and I stopped
- 1:45Speaker 1: eating the fish and everything went away. Like how quickly
- 1:47Speaker 1: did it go away? Mm hmmm, I would say weak ish.
- 1:53Speaker 1: And your wife had some symptoms as well. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I mentioned it to my wife the one night. I
- 1:57Speaker 1: was like, may, my hands are like getting numb lately,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and she's like, mine have too, that's really weird. And
- 2:03Speaker 1: she was eating a similar amount. Yeah, we were eating
- 2:05Speaker 1: the same stuff. I mean, sounds convincing. So like, neurologic
- 2:09Speaker 1: symptoms are very common side effect of mercury poisoning. I
- 2:13Speaker 1: guess you didn't go psychotic, but just some one day though,
- 2:18Speaker 1: I thought, I remember I I called my friend to
- 2:23Speaker 1: ask him a question and he didn't answer, and he
- 2:27Speaker 1: called me back like two minutes later and was like,
- 2:30Speaker 1: what would you call me for? And I was like, dude,
- 2:32Speaker 1: I I have absolutely no clue why I called you.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I remember calling him, but I had no clue why
- 2:38Speaker 1: that doesn't normally happen. No, that does not normally happen.
- 2:41Speaker 1: But does Seth still have mercury in the system because
- 2:44Speaker 1: it builds up well? Does he weigh a little bit
- 2:47Speaker 1: more than he did? Probably it's mostly cleansed from your system,
- 2:51Speaker 1: even if there's a little bit left over. How long
- 2:54Speaker 1: does it take? To be honest, I don't know a
- 2:56Speaker 1: whole lot about mercury poisoning. I've seen a grand total
- 2:59Speaker 1: of zero cases in my medical career. Um, so I'm
- 3:04Speaker 1: going off what I learned in medical school eight nine
- 3:07Speaker 1: years ago. We need Seth to donate his body to science,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and then we'll get some answers we should. I mean,
- 3:12Speaker 1: it would be interesting to get a hair sample or
- 3:14Speaker 1: something else that might, um show. I don't know if
- 3:17Speaker 1: a blood test with show at this point. Maybe when
- 3:19Speaker 1: you're having symptoms. But just for curiosity's sake, come over here.
- 3:22Speaker 1: We'll pluck one of those mustache hairs off. They fall
- 3:26Speaker 1: out all the time, so you can look there's one
- 3:28Speaker 1: right there now. Each week here on Meat Eater Trivia,
- 3:31Speaker 1: we reveal a new stat This week, we're looking at
- 3:35Speaker 1: the performance of meat eater BFFs Seth and Chester. We'll
- 3:39Speaker 1: go category by category here. So when it comes to hunting,
- 3:43Speaker 1: who do you think gets more right between you two? Oh,
- 3:46Speaker 1: I don't know Chester. In the hunting category, Chester gets
- 3:51Speaker 1: six of questions, right, while Seth gets We'll go to conservation.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Who do you think does better in servation? Chester? Seth? Seth?
- 4:03Speaker 1: It's gonna be a total nice Seth gets thirty nine
- 4:11Speaker 1: percent of conservation questions, right, while Chester gets twenty one percent.
- 4:17Speaker 1: How about with cooking? Who gets more cooking questions? Right? Oh, yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 1: I know it's Chester. I think Chester. You got to
- 4:26Speaker 1: be terrible with cooking. Chester gets forty four percent of
- 4:30Speaker 1: cooking questions, right, while Seth is at thirty seven percent.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Now here is the big one between the two fishing buddies.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Who is better at fishing trivia? Someone that will make
- 4:41Speaker 1: us fight? Do you think, Seth? What do you think?
- 4:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna hope Seth? Chester gets fifty four percent of
- 4:48Speaker 1: fishing questions, right while Seth gets thirty eight. Going to
- 4:54Speaker 1: be a new captain that haven't win on the board
- 4:59Speaker 1: and Chester I have went on the board. Now for
- 5:02Speaker 1: your overall performances, A meat Eater trivia. It's very tight.
- 5:06Speaker 1: On average, Chester gets forty of questions correct while Seth
- 5:10Speaker 1: gets of questions correct. So Seth is just three percentage
- 5:14Speaker 1: points behind Chester, which can all change from one good
- 5:17Speaker 1: game by Seth or one bad game by Chester. Very tight.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Better step it up here. What if? What if Chat
- 5:27Speaker 1: and I just become enemies? Now you're gonna feel bad
- 5:30Speaker 1: that you did that a little bit. What We'll figure
- 5:33Speaker 1: it out now, we have some housekeeping to get to
- 5:35Speaker 1: before we play trivia. Steve and I have been squabbling
- 5:39Speaker 1: about the definition of squab for a few months now.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Steve believes that the term squab is specific to rock doves,
- 5:46Speaker 1: which are more commonly known as street pigeons, and when
- 5:49Speaker 1: I asked this question on the game of trivia, Steve
- 5:51Speaker 1: argued that the players who said a squab is a
- 5:54Speaker 1: pigeon rather than a street pigeon shouldn't get the answer correct. Well,
- 5:58Speaker 1: now we can settle this debate. Zach Carson wrote in
- 6:01Speaker 1: to say that in the book Hope is a Thing
- 6:04Speaker 1: with Feathers, which details the extinction of six North American birds,
- 6:09Speaker 1: that the words squab is used to describe juvenile passenger pigeons.
- 6:13Speaker 1: The book goes into detail about how Native Americans ate
- 6:16Speaker 1: a lot of passenger pigeons squabs and made butter with
- 6:19Speaker 1: their fat. I've also located other sources like Stanford University
- 6:23Speaker 1: and the Audubon Society that referenced baby passenger pigeons, baby
- 6:27Speaker 1: scaled pigeons, and baby band tailed pigeons as squabs, So
- 6:31Speaker 1: the term squab can be used to describe any type
- 6:34Speaker 1: of juvenile pigeon, not just street pigeons. Whatever. That's that's
- 6:41Speaker 1: your rebuttal, it's better than I hope for. That's it. Okay,
- 6:50Speaker 1: Now these shall be index for this round of trivia
- 6:52Speaker 1: is a like oh I was wrong, but like, okay,
- 6:57Speaker 1: all right, the right. The Shelby index for this round
- 7:04Speaker 1: of trivia is a four or a winner should get
- 7:06Speaker 1: about eight correct answers, and with that, we're onto the
- 7:09Speaker 1: game of trivia. Play the drop film. What's up here? Is?
- 7:16Speaker 1: That's what I was waiting for. Are you sure that
- 7:19Speaker 1: that was my point? Okay? Yes, because we argue about
- 7:22Speaker 1: it during the question and then a future episode. I
- 7:25Speaker 1: gave you your own book and had you read a
- 7:27Speaker 1: passage from it. I know in my passage backed up
- 7:31Speaker 1: my your passage was broad and said pigeons. You said
- 7:36Speaker 1: squad was that. I wasn't arguing against people using it
- 7:39Speaker 1: like baby birds in general or something like that. I'm
- 7:42Speaker 1: sure next episode you're on, we'll play up the audio
- 7:45Speaker 1: again if you need to. You're picking a pretty old scab,
- 7:49Speaker 1: every buddy. Listen, we were so we're talking about ship
- 7:52Speaker 1: from years ago, so I can't really remember. I can't
- 7:56Speaker 1: really remember, like me fighting with my wife well at
- 7:58Speaker 1: one time, you know, I mean the differences we have
- 8:01Speaker 1: audio of. This will come back with the audio next episode.
- 8:03Speaker 1: This isn't the last time we'll talk about squabs. Phil
- 8:07Speaker 1: play the drop. Look, I need to know what I
- 8:11Speaker 1: stay in to win everything. I'm saying, just tend to
- 8:16Speaker 1: win everything. I'll tell you something real quick. My daughter
- 8:28Speaker 1: got recognized at the ski at the sledding Hill. Whoa
- 8:32Speaker 1: by the game on Suckers? What really? It's the trivia
- 8:36Speaker 1: super fans go. Someone said to her, are you the
- 8:41Speaker 1: game on? Girl? Wow? I recognize your voice. Did she
- 8:45Speaker 1: like that? It was like a little bit frightening. I
- 8:48Speaker 1: didn't get a sense that Devite wasn't frightening to it.
- 8:51Speaker 1: It was kind of a matter of fact telling question one.
- 8:54Speaker 1: The topic is fishing, and as always this will be
- 8:57Speaker 1: multiple choice. This first great question comes to as via
- 9:00Speaker 1: Cordy Btencourt. If you have a question you think is
- 9:03Speaker 1: right from meat Eater Trivia, you can send it to
- 9:05Speaker 1: trivia at the meat eater dot com. Which of these
- 9:09Speaker 1: world record fish is biggest? Is it blue catfish, lake sturgeon,
- 9:15Speaker 1: common carp, or alligator gar? This is measured by wait,
- 9:19Speaker 1: which of these world record fish is biggest? Your four
- 9:24Speaker 1: choices are blue catfish, lake sturgeon, common carp, or alligator gar.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Looking for the biggest of the four blue catfish, lake sturgeon,
- 9:36Speaker 1: common carp, alligator guard. Does everybody have an answer? Son
- 9:42Speaker 1: of a bitch? I can tell you what's three it is? Steve?
- 9:46Speaker 1: Have you caught a blue catfish? Have you caught a
- 9:49Speaker 1: lake sturgeon that was? No? No, common carp pens alligator garen?
- 9:57Speaker 1: Two out of four? You have personal experience with not
- 10:00Speaker 1: record holders? Right? Does everybody have an answer? Brodie? I
- 10:05Speaker 1: think I got about What do you got there? Brodie?
- 10:08Speaker 1: You're about to see go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 10:11Speaker 1: We have Steve saying alligator guard, John saying lake sturgeon,
- 10:15Speaker 1: Chester saying alligator guard, Brody saying alligator guard, Karin saying
- 10:19Speaker 1: blue cat, Seth saying blue cat, cal saying alec. I
- 10:22Speaker 1: tell you who doesn't have it, Seth and Karn, The
- 10:26Speaker 1: correct answer is alligator guard. The world record common carp
- 10:32Speaker 1: is seventy five pounds, the world record blue cat is
- 10:35Speaker 1: one hundred forty three pounds. You have alligator guy, so
- 10:39Speaker 1: he just passed up Seth even batter. The world record
- 10:44Speaker 1: lake surgeon is one hundred sixty Here they are common carp.
- 10:52Speaker 1: The world record is seventy five pounds, blue catfish is
- 10:56Speaker 1: one hundred forty three pounds, Lake sturgeon is one with
- 11:00Speaker 1: sixty eight pounds, and the world record alligator guard is
- 11:03Speaker 1: two hundred seventy nine pounds. It was caught out of
- 11:06Speaker 1: the Rio Grand in Texas in nineteen one, so over
- 11:10Speaker 1: one hundred pounds heavier than the world record lake surgeon.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I would have gotten. I would have guessed all those
- 11:17Speaker 1: except the blue cat out of guests to be bigger. Wow, definitely,
- 11:23Speaker 1: I thought lakes there can be a lot closer to
- 11:26Speaker 1: That would be a good little genre for you. For
- 11:28Speaker 1: tiebreakers would be what is the right We've done it?
- 11:34Speaker 1: We did uh the world record croppy, which came from Tennessee.
- 11:37Speaker 1: We've done the world record turkey, which the NWTF keeps
- 11:41Speaker 1: track of, so we've addressed it before. Question to yeah,
- 11:44Speaker 1: I do that. The topic is hunting. Scooby Doo is
- 11:50Speaker 1: this type of dog which was bred to hunt wild boars.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Scooby doo is this type of dog which was red
- 12:01Speaker 1: wild boars. Brody with an authoritative he knows it. What's
- 12:07Speaker 1: the biggest flathead cat? I think it's smaller than the
- 12:10Speaker 1: biggest blue That's the one we talked about before that
- 12:12Speaker 1: came out of reservoir in Kansas. Um that, like some pounds,
- 12:16Speaker 1: was sticking in my head. Bigger than that, I believe.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Find out for a second here at the questions. Scooby
- 12:23Speaker 1: Doo is this type of dog which was bred to
- 12:26Speaker 1: hunt wild boars, Brodie, how confident are you? Steve's that
- 12:32Speaker 1: making nervous. I wish you could turn I always Phil
- 12:35Speaker 1: could turn off the I have a question for Chester
- 12:41Speaker 1: about the game of trivia. No, no, no, okay, my hat.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Let me see your hat. Like the proliferation of that
- 12:51Speaker 1: brand of hat? Yeah, we mean the brand or the hat.
- 13:01Speaker 1: It's just it's like, you know, what if you were
- 13:04Speaker 1: to Gulifile somebody hat passed through Austin recently, would be
- 13:10Speaker 1: the profile? Yes, exactly, Phil. Do you think you would
- 13:14Speaker 1: know this answer? Yeah? Okay, one more time, Scooby Doo.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Is this type of dog which was bred to haunt
- 13:19Speaker 1: wild boars? Seth, you got an answer, go ahead and
- 13:24Speaker 1: reveal your answers. We have Steve saying Bassett, damn it,
- 13:27Speaker 1: John saying pointer Chester without an answer, Brodie saying great Dane,
- 13:32Speaker 1: Crin saying bloodhound, Seth saying ridge back, Cal saying great Dane.
- 13:38Speaker 1: We have a correct answer. It's great Dane. Who had that?
- 13:42Speaker 1: I think, Cal and you didn't have it? I had.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Let me see. Although the name implies that they are
- 13:51Speaker 1: from Denmark, the breed actually originates from Germany. They combined
- 13:56Speaker 1: the height of an Irish wolfhound, speed of the rayhound,
- 14:00Speaker 1: and muscle of the English mastiff to create what nineteenth
- 14:04Speaker 1: century hunters considered to be the perfect boarhound. Listen, I
- 14:08Speaker 1: owned a Great Dane. They don't have any kind of speed,
- 14:11Speaker 1: so I don't know where that's coming from. Maybe the
- 14:14Speaker 1: wild boars didn't either. How do you know that? Um?
- 14:18Speaker 1: How do we know that that's what Scooby was. They've
- 14:20Speaker 1: confirmed it. Question three, the topic is cooking. What is
- 14:26Speaker 1: the culinary name for the meat that comes from an
- 14:29Speaker 1: animal's thymus or pancreas. If you'll remember from our regular
- 14:34Speaker 1: episode of Meat Eater, this is the bone that I'm
- 14:37Speaker 1: throwing to our guest, What is the culinary name that
- 14:41Speaker 1: comes from the meat on an animal's thymus or pancreas struggling, No,
- 14:46Speaker 1: not at all. I'm still living in your head. Very
- 14:53Speaker 1: quick answers from most of the room. But you're supposed
- 14:55Speaker 1: to be the waning Champion. Champion, Champion. Did your kids
- 15:01Speaker 1: laugh at that joke? He started laughing. He's he even
- 15:06Speaker 1: thinking about it when he's making a breakfast for his kids.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Spencer One's question, what is the culinary name for the
- 15:14Speaker 1: meat that comes from an animal's thymus or pancreas. I
- 15:18Speaker 1: was reviewing my schedule and noticed that we had a
- 15:20Speaker 1: tribute today, and then immediately started wanting and I started
- 15:25Speaker 1: thinking about how to be funny if I said that
- 15:27Speaker 1: he was the waning Champion. And he was so in
- 15:30Speaker 1: love with the joke that he couldn't even wait for
- 15:32Speaker 1: the game of trivia to come along. Does everybody have
- 15:35Speaker 1: an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 15:39Speaker 1: Steve and John sang sweetbreads, Chester sang tenderloin, brod He
- 15:44Speaker 1: sang sweetbread, Krin saying don't have an answer, and Cal
- 15:49Speaker 1: saying sweetbreads. Staid awful. Now, Chester, why in the world
- 15:59Speaker 1: you've cut out how many tenderloins in your life? I
- 16:03Speaker 1: I couldn't think of anything, so I just wrote down tenderlind.
- 16:06Speaker 1: The correct answer is sweetbread. It's recommended that sweetbreads are
- 16:11Speaker 1: soaked in cold water for about twenty four hours to
- 16:13Speaker 1: remove any blood. Common preparations include grilling, sautang, poaching, broiling,
- 16:19Speaker 1: and frying. Both glands have a mild mineral flavor, soft texture,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and subtle sweetness. Dr Jonathan Riceman, what is your experience
- 16:28Speaker 1: with sweetbreads. I've actually never had them before. Really, Yeah,
- 16:32Speaker 1: it's sad that seems kind of mild on the spectrum
- 16:37Speaker 1: big old organ parties. You never cooked those up? No,
- 16:39Speaker 1: that that will be in the future immune system dinner,
- 16:42Speaker 1: which we haven't done yet. Would you have any reservations
- 16:46Speaker 1: about eating a sweetbread? Is there anything on safe that
- 16:48Speaker 1: someone should consider if they were going to eat that.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Absolutely not. I look forward to trying it for the
- 16:52Speaker 1: first time. What's your experienced, Steve Lots I used to
- 16:56Speaker 1: have a friend that uh I live next door to
- 16:59Speaker 1: God had a ustom slaughter plant, and so he would
- 17:02Speaker 1: just bring him over and he was missing his thumb. Remember,
- 17:05Speaker 1: one of the most mesmerizing things was watching because you
- 17:08Speaker 1: have to peel, you know, you kind of gotta peel
- 17:10Speaker 1: the otter membrane off him. And how dexterous he had
- 17:12Speaker 1: become over the years. Even though he had no thumb,
- 17:15Speaker 1: he could like peel the membrane by grabbing it against
- 17:19Speaker 1: like what would be the base of your thumb in
- 17:21Speaker 1: his heart, he'd be able to get in there. And
- 17:24Speaker 1: she's missing thumb related to his ownership of a slaughterhouse.
- 17:28Speaker 1: You want, I've told the story about tell it again.
- 17:32Speaker 1: When he was young, they used to jack up a
- 17:36Speaker 1: truck and use it as a and use the axle
- 17:38Speaker 1: to drive a big saw to drive a saw blade.
- 17:44Speaker 1: He lost his thumb on that and his brother threw
- 17:46Speaker 1: it into the hogpen and the hogs ate it. Whoay
- 17:52Speaker 1: has life and death on the farm right there the
- 17:55Speaker 1: basque corner in Reno has a real good sweetbread dish.
- 18:00Speaker 1: So if you're ever going through Reno, look up the
- 18:02Speaker 1: basket corner. So would you have any recommendations for a
- 18:05Speaker 1: guest and how he should prepare sweetbread? I don't like
- 18:09Speaker 1: them done and like real saucy concoctions. I like I'm
- 18:13Speaker 1: pretty clean and straight up. The question for the topic
- 18:17Speaker 1: is foraging. This next great question comes to us via
- 18:20Speaker 1: Brian Parks. If you have a question you think is
- 18:23Speaker 1: right for Meat Eat Trivia, you can send it to
- 18:25Speaker 1: trivia at the meat eater dot com. What edible mushroom
- 18:28Speaker 1: goes by nicknames like the molly moocher, Dryland fish and Merkel? What? What?
- 18:36Speaker 1: What edible mushroom goes by nicknames like the molly moocher,
- 18:40Speaker 1: dryland fish, and Merkel. Seems as though nobody in the
- 18:44Speaker 1: room knew this right away? Did you have this? Okay,
- 18:48Speaker 1: our guest, It's quite confident. The nicknames again are molly moocher,
- 18:53Speaker 1: dryland fish, and Merkel. This is an edible mushroom. Very stumped.
- 19:01Speaker 1: This might ruin some perfect games here, dry land fish?
- 19:05Speaker 1: You say, he did say that? Cal Brodie, how do
- 19:12Speaker 1: you feel about this one? I just tossed a guests
- 19:14Speaker 1: out there when you were doing your your edible plant
- 19:20Speaker 1: searching in Central Park? Did you guys find any mushrooms?
- 19:23Speaker 1: I think we just found them, like ganna derma um.
- 19:27Speaker 1: What would be the common name for that. It's a
- 19:30Speaker 1: shelf mushroom on the on a tree that has like
- 19:32Speaker 1: a very red dark red surface, a red banded polypoor
- 19:37Speaker 1: something like that. I think it's some kind of polypoor getty.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Nicknames are Molly moocher, dryland fish, and merkel. Does everybody
- 19:44Speaker 1: have an answer? Son of a bitch? No? Kiss me off? Good? H? No,
- 19:51Speaker 1: I'm not good, but I'm done. Go ahead and reveal
- 19:54Speaker 1: your answers. We have Steve saying coral, John saying morale, Chest,
- 19:58Speaker 1: you're saying lions, Main, Brodie saying oyster, Crin saying oyster,
- 20:03Speaker 1: Seth saying lions Maine, and Cal saying shaggy mane. We
- 20:07Speaker 1: have a correct answer in the room. It's morale what.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Most of these nicknames come from foragers in this progressively
- 20:15Speaker 1: higher pitched Most of these nicknames come from foragers in
- 20:20Speaker 1: the South and date back to the Civil War. The
- 20:23Speaker 1: nickname molly moocher is most likely a combination of what
- 20:26Speaker 1: women on the battlefield were called, which was molly and
- 20:29Speaker 1: the phrase that means to wander slowly, which is mooching.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Hundreds of pounds, I've picked hundreds of right now, Type
- 20:45Speaker 1: in dry land fish mushroom. Yeah, let's see we have.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I would imagine it's because none of us grew up
- 20:54Speaker 1: below the Mason Dixon. Okay, what are you? Type it
- 20:57Speaker 1: in te dry lane and fish mushroom. Okay, don't you
- 21:03Speaker 1: think Spencer already did that? He's been caught being wrong before.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I have. You got to keep me honest? What do
- 21:11Speaker 1: you learning? Steve suspiciously quiet? Steve beda grunt and put
- 21:20Speaker 1: his phone down. Question five. The topic is conservation conservationist
- 21:27Speaker 1: John Chapman was better known by what name? Conservationist John
- 21:34Speaker 1: Chapman was better known by what name? Quick answers from
- 21:38Speaker 1: I believe, Seth and Steve right, quick, very quick answer
- 21:43Speaker 1: from Steve and nobody else conservationist John Chapman, who is
- 21:48Speaker 1: better known by what name? Steps your confidence at on this? Extraordinarily?
- 21:59Speaker 1: Brody is still thinking. This is question five. We'll get
- 22:05Speaker 1: a scoreboard update from Phil the engineer after this, John Chapman,
- 22:12Speaker 1: does everybody have an answer? Yeah? Go ahead, and reveal
- 22:16Speaker 1: your answers. We have Steve saying Johnny Appleseed, John saying
- 22:19Speaker 1: Johnny Appleseed. Chest, you're saying Chappy Brody came up with
- 22:25Speaker 1: the Johnny Appleseed grin without an answer. That's saying CHAPPI
- 22:28Speaker 1: and Cal saying Johnny Appleseed. Now what is going on
- 22:31Speaker 1: here with the Chappie? Now? You guys doing kind of
- 22:33Speaker 1: weird che which is wrong? The correct answer is Johnny Applese.
- 22:40Speaker 1: If he was my friend, I'd call him Chappie. John
- 22:43Speaker 1: Chapman Brodie, how did you not know it but then
- 22:46Speaker 1: know it all of a sudden. I have very powerful
- 22:51Speaker 1: I can reason very well. I see it in the reflection. No,
- 22:54Speaker 1: I can just like off the super Cup. The real
- 22:58Speaker 1: life Johnny apples was a homestead flipper in the late
- 23:02Speaker 1: seventeen hundreds and early eighteen hundreds. He would claim free
- 23:06Speaker 1: plots of land in the Midwest, plant seventy fruit trees
- 23:09Speaker 1: on each property, and then sell the acreages too tardy Frontiersman.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Chapman's apples tasted terrible, but they made for great hard cider.
- 23:17Speaker 1: For more on the real Johnny Appleseed, go to the
- 23:19Speaker 1: Meat Deater dot com. And read my article called the
- 23:21Speaker 1: Boozy History of Johnny Appleseed. Phil, we're halfway through the
- 23:25Speaker 1: game of trivia. Give us a scoreboard update. We'll do
- 23:28Speaker 1: with zero points or Kringe Schneider and Seth Morris with
- 23:36Speaker 1: one point. We got Chester holding his lead above Seth
- 23:41Speaker 1: three points apiece. We've got Steven Ronella and our guest
- 23:45Speaker 1: Jonathan Riceman and in first place tied up our Broody
- 23:50Speaker 1: Henderson and Ryan Callahan with four points apiece. How far
- 23:55Speaker 1: back are you too? Yeah, I'm backwards one. Question six.
- 24:11Speaker 1: The topic is biology. What biological term describes the process
- 24:16Speaker 1: of a tadpole becoming a frog or caterpillar becoming a butterfly?
- 24:23Speaker 1: What biological term describes the process of a tadpole becoming
- 24:28Speaker 1: a frog or caterpillar becoming a butterfly? Brody got it right. Okay,
- 24:37Speaker 1: we have a suspiciously slow answer coming from the guest
- 24:40Speaker 1: who has doctor in their name. Do you think you
- 24:42Speaker 1: know this one? Not confident? Jess just tied up and
- 24:46Speaker 1: knots here. I know I have heard this in my day.
- 24:49Speaker 1: I just cannot looking for the biological term that describes
- 24:53Speaker 1: the process of a tadpole becoming a frog or caterpillar
- 24:58Speaker 1: becoming a butterfly. Seth, you got this one? No, okay.
- 25:03Speaker 1: I feel like the guy from winne begel Man and
- 25:05Speaker 1: he's like, my mind is a piece of ship today. Man,
- 25:11Speaker 1: you can always blame that man. Yeah, go ahead and
- 25:14Speaker 1: reveal your answers. Hi saying metamorphosis, John saying pupatition, Chester
- 25:20Speaker 1: saying molten, Brody's saying metamorphosis, Karin saying metamorphosis, Seth saying
- 25:25Speaker 1: tell me what that says, Caw saying metamorphosis. The correct
- 25:30Speaker 1: answer is metamorphosis more phasian. Both frogs and butterflies that's
- 25:39Speaker 1: south of the Mason Dixon line is how they do it.
- 25:43Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't have to give it to me.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I'm not a charity case. Both frogs and butterflies have
- 25:49Speaker 1: a four stage metamorphosis. A frog's is egg, tadpool froglet
- 25:55Speaker 1: and frog. A butterflies is egg, caterpillar, chrysalists and butterfly.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Other animals that experience metamorphosis include scorpions, salamanders, lobsters, prawns, starfish,
- 26:08Speaker 1: sea cucumbers, and jellyfish. Question seven. The topic is gear
- 26:16Speaker 1: this business, which claims to be America's biggest RV dealer
- 26:21Speaker 1: is known for the obscenely large American flags flowing on
- 26:24Speaker 1: their lots. That's the question. That's the question to which
- 26:30Speaker 1: nobody has provided an answer. This business, which claims to
- 26:34Speaker 1: be America's biggest RV dealer, is known for the obscenely
- 26:39Speaker 1: large American flags flown on their lots. I can't remember
- 26:44Speaker 1: the place I bought my camper at had little tiny
- 26:50Speaker 1: flag the name. Looking for the name of the business
- 26:54Speaker 1: that the rs that sells the RVs, this business, which
- 26:57Speaker 1: claims to be America's biggest r I might have just
- 27:00Speaker 1: had a creeper, dude, I might like like I might
- 27:04Speaker 1: have just had like an extra sensory deal come into
- 27:09Speaker 1: my brain and give me the answer. Okay, like no,
- 27:13Speaker 1: not the homunculous man. It was like like something from
- 27:17Speaker 1: outside divine intervention. Yeah, wow, almost something like that fessed
- 27:24Speaker 1: it here today like a like an angel believer again,
- 27:30Speaker 1: looking for the business that is America's biggest RV dealer,
- 27:34Speaker 1: which is known for the obscenely large American flags flown
- 27:39Speaker 1: on their lots. Can anybody picture this place? Yes, they're
- 27:44Speaker 1: wondering how big, just how big is that flag? I
- 27:46Speaker 1: can give you an answer. After this, does everybody have
- 27:49Speaker 1: an answer for this question? I always thought just how
- 27:52Speaker 1: much wind to to get that thing moving? Yeah, I
- 27:56Speaker 1: don't know if the ratio would be the same. It's
- 27:58Speaker 1: all drones now. Anyway, go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 28:02Speaker 1: We have Steve saying r V world, John saying Winnebego Chester.
- 28:06Speaker 1: You're saying mega land RV and boat sails that's what
- 28:10Speaker 1: I'm calling. Brody's saying lazy days, Karen saying best American RV,
- 28:16Speaker 1: Seth saying r V World, and Cal saying RV America.
- 28:21Speaker 1: He crossed out r V USA and Camping World. The
- 28:25Speaker 1: correct answer is Camping World. Nobody got it right. A
- 28:30Speaker 1: few people on the right track. It was the first
- 28:34Speaker 1: answer that Col wrote down, which he crossed out all
- 28:37Speaker 1: that would have given Cal a very decisive Yeah. They're
- 28:41Speaker 1: they're a big deal. They're building one in building buildings
- 28:44Speaker 1: right now. They also have their own lobbyists. You know
- 28:47Speaker 1: what I read the other day though r V sales
- 28:50Speaker 1: are slowing down a sign of supposedly to find a
- 28:57Speaker 1: sign of Camping World like a big player and and
- 29:01Speaker 1: like National park reforms trying to get um Internet at
- 29:06Speaker 1: camp sites like buff up the amenities and things like that,
- 29:09Speaker 1: because that in turn leads to more RV sales or
- 29:13Speaker 1: rentals or something, and they're not gonna like my idea
- 29:15Speaker 1: turn Yellowstone into a wilder area Camping World dealerships. Camping
- 29:21Speaker 1: World Dealerships fly a forty foot by eighty foot American
- 29:24Speaker 1: flag on their lot, which is thirty two hundred square
- 29:28Speaker 1: feet of red, white, and blue. The Statesville, North Carolina
- 29:31Speaker 1: location was sued by the city in eighteen for violating
- 29:36Speaker 1: a code that said flags could be no bigger than
- 29:38Speaker 1: twenty five ft by forty ft. During the dispute, the
- 29:42Speaker 1: company CEO said he would rather go to jail than
- 29:45Speaker 1: take down the flag. Camping World paid fifteen thousand dollars
- 29:49Speaker 1: and fines, but eventually got the city to change the
- 29:51Speaker 1: ordinance and allow them to keep the flag. Camping World,
- 29:55Speaker 1: these colors don't run, you know, square feet at law?
- 30:00Speaker 1: How big? Question eight next to be like your your
- 30:05Speaker 1: heart's too big, too much, hard, too much patriotism. Question
- 30:14Speaker 1: eight the topic is cooking. This is our on X
- 30:17Speaker 1: listener Question of the Week, which was won by Michael
- 30:20Speaker 1: Whittlinger for sending this great question. Michael is going to
- 30:23Speaker 1: get a one year premium subscription to on X. If
- 30:26Speaker 1: you want a chance to win our listener question of
- 30:28Speaker 1: the week, then send it to trivia at the meat
- 30:31Speaker 1: eater dot com. This is the hardest round. This is
- 30:33Speaker 1: the hardest round we've ever had. We have three questions
- 30:36Speaker 1: index or so our winners should get about eight. She
- 30:41Speaker 1: was having a hot night. This powder, which is sometimes
- 30:44Speaker 1: called pink cring salt, is named after the capital city
- 30:48Speaker 1: of the Czech Republic. Very quick answer from Brody cal
- 30:54Speaker 1: Steve Again the question is this powder, which is sometimes
- 30:58Speaker 1: called pink curing salt, is named after the capital city
- 31:03Speaker 1: of the Czech Republic. John, how do you feel about this?
- 31:06Speaker 1: Too much information? Uh? Why did you give so much
- 31:11Speaker 1: detail so you can have the specific name? Like everybody
- 31:14Speaker 1: getting it right? Chester? You got this one right, an
- 31:18Speaker 1: insalt seth and Chester anymore? You could have been like
- 31:23Speaker 1: capital of a European city, like listen. I'd like I
- 31:27Speaker 1: liked it. This conjunction is spelled A and D. I like,
- 31:31Speaker 1: which is callus trying to words something to Chester. He's
- 31:38Speaker 1: on the right. I'd like to create a game that
- 31:42Speaker 1: non non endemic folks listening to this can still enjoy
- 31:46Speaker 1: and play along. It's like the Scooby Doo question, like
- 31:49Speaker 1: you may not know, but too much info here's whoming.
- 31:54Speaker 1: The audience is like, what are you trying to say
- 31:56Speaker 1: about them? I'm what I'm telling you is I've got
- 31:59Speaker 1: a lot of fee back, uh from folks that have
- 32:02Speaker 1: significant others who also listened, that enjoy the show even
- 32:04Speaker 1: though they're not core to hunting. But these kind of
- 32:07Speaker 1: questions that starts Spencer, Like Spencer his like a lot
- 32:13Speaker 1: of feedback kind of stuff. Yeah, it'll be like, you know,
- 32:18Speaker 1: like I don't want to do the family feud thing anymore,
- 32:20Speaker 1: you know, so I started sending them letters about how
- 32:22Speaker 1: bad the Family Feud episodes are and uh, He's like, well,
- 32:26Speaker 1: I've got a lot of feedback that says, otherwise, we can,
- 32:30Speaker 1: we can? He says, you won? It was before the show.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? You No? Always talk makes
- 32:38Speaker 1: it hard to think. Seth running out of time, Go
- 32:45Speaker 1: ahead and be your answers. We've got Steve saying Prague,
- 32:48Speaker 1: John saying Prague Chester without an answer, Clody and Crint
- 32:52Speaker 1: saying Prague. Seth down, answer, cal what does that say?
- 32:56Speaker 1: You thought the capital of the Czech Republican Saltpeter. No,
- 33:01Speaker 1: So we had four people get it right and three
- 33:03Speaker 1: people get it wrong. How do you feel about the
- 33:05Speaker 1: question now, you gave it too much information? Obviously not
- 33:08Speaker 1: if four people got it right and three people got
- 33:10Speaker 1: it wrong the correct answer. Other names for this substance
- 33:16Speaker 1: include instacure and curing powder. It was invented by a
- 33:20Speaker 1: European butcher at the beginning of World War One. If
- 33:24Speaker 1: you want to learn how to use prague powder at home,
- 33:26Speaker 1: then read Anaborgman's wild and whole article called Everything you
- 33:30Speaker 1: Need to Know about Curing meat on the meat eater
- 33:33Speaker 1: dot com. You know there's you know you pink salt
- 33:36Speaker 1: one and pink salt too. One's more night rates and
- 33:39Speaker 1: one's more night trites, and like for for like dry,
- 33:43Speaker 1: like for slow carrying versus sausage making. Instacure, what insecure
- 33:49Speaker 1: is the same thing. It's It's all in the article
- 33:54Speaker 1: from Anna Borgman. If you're making if you're making bra sola,
- 34:00Speaker 1: you'd use one. If you're making something like um, you know,
- 34:05Speaker 1: hot dogs, you'd use to do They both give it
- 34:08Speaker 1: that red color, like when you know when you like
- 34:11Speaker 1: cira ham, the meat gets that I'm not i don't
- 34:13Speaker 1: know if my guess is yes, but I can't say
- 34:15Speaker 1: for sure. That question was so good it was our
- 34:17Speaker 1: on X listener question of the Week. Phil, we have
- 34:21Speaker 1: two questions left. Give us a scoreboard update. Yeah, well,
- 34:24Speaker 1: unfortunately we have to say goodbye to Seth, Karen and
- 34:28Speaker 1: Chester who do not have a chance to come back.
- 34:31Speaker 1: But John has four points and is still in the game.
- 34:35Speaker 1: We got Steven cal tied up with five points and
- 34:38Speaker 1: Barodi is in first place with six points. Some book
- 34:42Speaker 1: question nine. The topic is hunting. This is a visual question.
- 34:47Speaker 1: If you want to see what the room is seing,
- 34:49Speaker 1: then go to Instagram and check out at Spencer New Hearth.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I'll make it my most recent post. This photo from
- 34:58Speaker 1: shows a celebrity who was an it outdoorsman. You need
- 35:01Speaker 1: to tell me who that celebrity is. What was the
- 35:04Speaker 1: year nineteen forty? Why their faces all blurred out so
- 35:08Speaker 1: you knew which person I was referring to? Tell me
- 35:13Speaker 1: to get more celebrities. This photo from nineteen forty shows
- 35:18Speaker 1: a celebrity who was an avid outdoors You need to
- 35:21Speaker 1: tell me who that celebrity is? Easy? What Chester? Do
- 35:30Speaker 1: you know this one? No? John, do you know this one.
- 35:33Speaker 1: I agree with easy, okay, Steve, but I could end
- 35:39Speaker 1: up looking real bad, you know again, looking for who
- 35:43Speaker 1: the person in that photo is. It's a celebrity in
- 35:45Speaker 1: the picture was taken in nineteen forty. Cal barely had
- 35:52Speaker 1: to look at it like you knew it. You knew it.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Have you seen the photo before? Cal? I didn't look
- 35:59Speaker 1: at the photo. I just look person. Does everybody have
- 36:02Speaker 1: an answer? Gosh, this game can be frustrating sometimes. This
- 36:06Speaker 1: is the word I hate this. Does everybody have an answer?
- 36:12Speaker 1: Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying
- 36:15Speaker 1: Mickey Mantle, John saying Babe Ruth saying Babe Ruth, Cal
- 36:25Speaker 1: saying Babe Ruth, George Herman Ruth which I think was
- 36:30Speaker 1: his real name. Good on. The correct answer was Babe Ruth. Yeah,
- 36:34Speaker 1: but because like I just a different Yankee Ruth. But
- 36:41Speaker 1: you know that I knew. Thank you, even you didn't
- 36:46Speaker 1: know that. Ruth reportedly loved a hunt and fish during
- 36:50Speaker 1: the off season. This particular photo shows him after a
- 36:54Speaker 1: successful hunting trip in New Brunswick, where his party killed moose,
- 36:58Speaker 1: black bear, white tail, and turkey. Other pictures of Bruce
- 37:02Speaker 1: hunts show him with gators, geese, pheasants, snapping turtles, and more.
- 37:07Speaker 1: And this photo is super impressive. They have some monster
- 37:10Speaker 1: critters on there. Yeah, the the moose is spectacular and
- 37:14Speaker 1: there's definitely at least one real nice white tale in there. Um.
- 37:19Speaker 1: I can't believe you somehow plucked baseball out of this
- 37:24Speaker 1: because I just listen. That's why I should have it.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I should be allowed to get it because that's what
- 37:28Speaker 1: I meant. Oh yeah, I'd give it to him. We should.
- 37:33Speaker 1: We should consult Polar bear Pete and see what he
- 37:35Speaker 1: would say if you is it Polar Bear Pete, Polar Pete. Yeah,
- 37:41Speaker 1: we have one question left, Phil, who is left in
- 37:44Speaker 1: the game. Uh? Well, with six points, got Ryan Callahan
- 37:48Speaker 1: and in first place the waning champion seven points. Unfortunately, Steve,
- 37:53Speaker 1: the reigning champion, is no longer in Convince the Silent Killer.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Question ten. The topic is fishing. The last great question
- 38:01Speaker 1: comes to is via William Raichy. If you have a
- 38:03Speaker 1: question you think is right from Meat Eater Trivia, you
- 38:05Speaker 1: can send it to trivia the meat eater dot com.
- 38:09Speaker 1: The Buffalo National River, which became America's first national river
- 38:13Speaker 1: in nineteen seventy two, is located in what southern state?
- 38:20Speaker 1: The Buffalo National River, which became America's first national river
- 38:25Speaker 1: in nineteen seventy two, is located in what southern state?
- 38:32Speaker 1: Quick answer from Brody quick to writing, not quick to answering,
- 38:38Speaker 1: it's a southern state, South state. Steve, you're gonna play
- 38:42Speaker 1: along on question ten right now? You know what well,
- 38:45Speaker 1: You're not gonna get credit. Then when the stat keeping
- 38:49Speaker 1: is that, how defiant you are? I don't actually know
- 38:52Speaker 1: it again. The Buffalo National River, which became America's first
- 38:59Speaker 1: national river and teen seventy two, is located in what
- 39:03Speaker 1: southern state? Brodie, how you feel about your answer? I
- 39:08Speaker 1: think and just reiterate Phil, only Cal and Brody are
- 39:13Speaker 1: left correct? Correct? Yes? Does everybody have an answer talking
- 39:18Speaker 1: for the state? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 39:22Speaker 1: have Steve saying I like, for whatever reason, I feel
- 39:24Speaker 1: like it's Arkansas. So I hope, I hope you're right
- 39:26Speaker 1: John Oklahoma Chester, you're saying Missouri, Brody saying Arkansas, Crann
- 39:32Speaker 1: saying Tennessee, Seth saying Tennessee, and Cal saying Florida. We
- 39:36Speaker 1: have a correct answer in the room. It's Arkansas, making
- 39:39Speaker 1: Brody so give us eight correct and holy aside from
- 39:46Speaker 1: what was he told me, he just started taking geriatric vitamins.
- 39:54Speaker 1: The ship kicked in. I want to continue the part
- 39:57Speaker 1: of today. There are two bodies that make up the
- 40:02Speaker 1: National Wild and Scenic River System. These rivers are managed
- 40:06Speaker 1: by a number of different states and federal agencies, including
- 40:09Speaker 1: the U. S. Forest Service, National Park Service, US Fishing
- 40:13Speaker 1: Wildlife Service BLM, and Army Corps of Engineers CAL. I
- 40:17Speaker 1: don't know the specifics of the protection. It just grants
- 40:20Speaker 1: them more protections on a state and federal level. Um,
- 40:23Speaker 1: here's something real embarrassing. When I was working in Arkansas
- 40:26Speaker 1: earlier this year, was there twice in two weeks. I
- 40:31Speaker 1: met some DNR officers or sorry, state parks officers at
- 40:38Speaker 1: the Buffalo River. You go fishing one day and did
- 40:42Speaker 1: you go fishing? But I was like, yeah, why is
- 40:44Speaker 1: Buffalo Why do I know Buffalo River? Yeah? Did you
- 40:47Speaker 1: go fishing? We ended up bailing on the on the
- 40:51Speaker 1: river because it was so low and we went on
- 40:54Speaker 1: our bitch and bassboat instead. Were you looking for small
- 40:58Speaker 1: mouth there? It's fun? What? What? What? What's that geriatric
- 41:03Speaker 1: vitamin you're taking? Some like multi vitamin why you need something,
- 41:10Speaker 1: I'll tell you something. Oh yeah, because that ship is
- 41:13Speaker 1: kicking ass man, I'm gonna start taking that. You start
- 41:16Speaker 1: taking it now. Man, it's no smart you'll do all.
- 41:19Speaker 1: He wins with eight correct answers, holding true to the
- 41:22Speaker 1: Shelby index. What happens next is he gets to choose
- 41:25Speaker 1: where the five dollar donation goes. So what's it gonna be, Brody? Um?
- 41:29Speaker 1: I promised a buddy back east who's a grouse centner,
- 41:33Speaker 1: that I would donate to the Rough Grouse Society. What
- 41:36Speaker 1: do you like about them? Besides you? Those rough grass
- 41:39Speaker 1: are hurting a lot of Eastern states, so they just
- 41:42Speaker 1: need all the help they can get. Ronnie Beam like
- 41:44Speaker 1: that one to Steve. I'm updating you on the score chart. Here,
- 41:47Speaker 1: well done, Brody, an authoritative victory. Join us next time
- 41:51Speaker 1: for more Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 41:54Speaker 1: conservation always wins,
