- 0:06Speaker 1: Oh do we love this man?
- 0:07Speaker 2: Hey, I'm not certain anyone puts a bigger smile on
- 0:11Speaker 2: our faces collectively than Phil Simms. A great quarterback, great
- 0:17Speaker 2: media career after he was a quarterback. His son is
- 0:20Speaker 2: a good friend of ours that joins us every week.
- 0:23Speaker 2: He's been texting me from Europe. He's crazy, Chris Simms,
- 0:26Speaker 2: but Phil Simms is not. And I listen, we had
- 0:29Speaker 2: a conversation right before we started here. I'm gonna let
- 0:32Speaker 2: mikey A ask the first question. It's a great question,
- 0:35Speaker 2: So mikey A, the floor is yours.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Go ahead.
- 0:38Speaker 3: I didn't hear any great questions.
- 0:40Speaker 1: You know it's coming right now.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Well we'll get a great answer, I'm sure.
- 0:43Speaker 4: But you said that you don't give it, you don't
- 0:45Speaker 4: give a crap, And I was just curious, how do
- 0:48Speaker 4: you get to I.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Don't give a crap?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Is it age? Is it money? What is it that
- 0:51Speaker 1: I can do.
- 0:52Speaker 3: To get to I don't give a crap?
- 0:54Speaker 1: How do you arrive there? Phil? Yes?
- 0:56Speaker 3: Hey, the first thing is it? Sure as a hell?
- 0:58Speaker 5: Ain't about money because I didn't make any inn anywhere?
- 1:00Speaker 5: So you plaited fifteen years? Yeah, My starting salary was
- 1:05Speaker 5: sixty thousand and we progressed a little bit every year.
- 1:08Speaker 3: I mean, so that's one thing. And AGES definitely is.
- 1:11Speaker 5: I hired the crap that I read and see, and
- 1:15Speaker 5: I turn the TV on every morning and my kids
- 1:17Speaker 5: make fun of me. Why you watching all those shows?
- 1:19Speaker 5: All you do is get mad? I said, yeah, nobody
- 1:22Speaker 5: gives me. It just makes me want to fight more.
- 1:27Speaker 5: And so I was watching the film.
- 1:29Speaker 3: No you weren't.
- 1:29Speaker 5: You couldn't have been watching because your take is absolutely
- 1:33Speaker 5: wrong and stupid. But you're telling a big audience out there,
- 1:38Speaker 5: you know what I mean. Yes, all the people to
- 1:41Speaker 5: listen go, oh, yeah, he's smart. He must be right. No, no,
- 1:44Speaker 5: it's it's every day. So I do let it pass.
- 1:47Speaker 5: And of course my young son Matt, who's in the
- 1:50Speaker 5: business too, he goes, you know, a big guy, just
- 1:53Speaker 5: let it go.
- 1:54Speaker 3: You know, you can't fight it, you know, And I said, yeah,
- 1:55Speaker 3: I know, I know.
- 1:57Speaker 5: I really What I what would love to do is
- 1:59Speaker 5: have a show and just go Today, here are the
- 2:03Speaker 5: top five stupidest things said by people on TV. I
- 2:08Speaker 5: say stupid things too every once in a while, get
- 2:11Speaker 5: it wrong. But I'm gonna tell you I never talk
- 2:13Speaker 5: about something unless I really know, right, So you know,
- 2:16Speaker 5: oh you mean, I got.
- 2:17Speaker 3: To do a little homework to tell the truth. Think
- 2:20Speaker 3: of it this way, guys, Hey, mom's, dad's.
- 2:24Speaker 5: Wife, kids, whatever, are listening to some of these shows,
- 2:28Speaker 5: and when what else are they? You know, even the fans,
- 2:32Speaker 5: what did they go by? What they read and what
- 2:34Speaker 5: they hear. So I think that's a big responsibility for
- 2:37Speaker 5: the press to try to do the right thing.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Phil, I am all in for a daily show, and
- 2:42Speaker 2: would you give us the top five dumbest thing said
- 2:44Speaker 2: every sid Well listen about every single just so you know, featured,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I got enough people, I.
- 2:53Speaker 5: Got enough people that don't like me, so I'm gonna
- 2:55Speaker 5: try to keep it a little you know. As Bill
- 3:01Speaker 5: Parcell said to me sometime during my career, it was
- 3:04Speaker 5: kind of getting late, and he was he goes, hey, Sims,
- 3:06Speaker 5: don't worry when you quit, the fans are going to
- 3:08Speaker 5: like you. And I went that a is that a
- 3:11Speaker 5: compliment that you quit the fans are going to like you?
- 3:16Speaker 3: Well, Bill, when you retire, maybe, well, whatever you think about.
- 3:22Speaker 5: I'm gonna write a book and I'm gonna have two
- 3:26Speaker 5: chapters on Lawrence Taylor, and then I don't know how
- 3:29Speaker 5: many chapters I'm gonna have on parcels. But damn, to
- 3:33Speaker 5: get even with him, I'd have to write the whole
- 3:35Speaker 5: book about him, because man, he listen, we won, and
- 3:38Speaker 5: I tell people all the time, I love him, would
- 3:42Speaker 5: do anything for him. And I'm here on this show
- 3:45Speaker 5: today just because because of him. He's the big reason.
- 3:48Speaker 5: He helped us win two super Bowls. So you know,
- 3:52Speaker 5: can't can't hate a guy for that?
- 3:53Speaker 3: Was he? Yes, did he ever have a day where
- 3:57Speaker 3: he came out and he was nice? No?
- 4:00Speaker 5: He had the great ability to every day to drive
- 4:03Speaker 5: you you know it was you know, look, thinking back,
- 4:07Speaker 5: I go, you know, he could have gone out one
- 4:09Speaker 5: day and go, okay, guys, just take it in.
- 4:10Speaker 3: We had a great workout, you know. No, never.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Phil, Phil, do you remember Taylor? You were at the
- 4:20Speaker 2: barn for the draft. Chris was doing a show there. Yeah,
- 4:25Speaker 2: do you remember Taylor? Just kind of hanging around the
- 4:27Speaker 2: barn there?
- 4:27Speaker 1: What was going on?
- 4:30Speaker 3: You know, I don't remember much about it. You know
- 4:32Speaker 3: a lot of people. I wasn't drinking. I don't really drink, right.
- 4:38Speaker 5: I was trying to watch, you know, Christopher and his
- 4:40Speaker 5: his sidekick do this thing, and I'm just going, God,
- 4:44Speaker 5: I'm glad you're doing it, because I sure as the
- 4:45Speaker 5: hell wouldn't want to do what you're doing there.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Oh, we're surprised by the pick and you know whatever.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Sorry I didn't. I wasn't zooming on and zooming in.
- 4:54Speaker 3: And a lot of people. Man, there were a lot
- 4:56Speaker 3: of people there.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Too, too many people, right, I mean for a draft,
- 4:59Speaker 2: I mean, leave me the fuck alone.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I'm feel sims right, it's not.
- 5:03Speaker 3: That complicated, right. Yeah, they were doing the.
- 5:07Speaker 5: Social post I guess and all that. So everybody, I
- 5:10Speaker 5: did notice, everybody was working.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:12Speaker 2: So my executive producer who's on the zoom with us
- 5:15Speaker 2: right now, Taylor, he was in the barn. What a
- 5:17Speaker 2: great night, a special night for him to be able
- 5:20Speaker 2: to take in the draft with the Simms family.
- 5:22Speaker 1: He did.
- 5:23Speaker 2: He did take a video of you at one point
- 5:26Speaker 2: drinking a diet coke and eating baby carrots. I believe,
- 5:29Speaker 2: And I got to tell you Phil that it was shocking.
- 5:32Speaker 2: But that is what draft night is all about.
- 5:34Speaker 5: I mean, hey, man, let me just tell you something. Yeah,
- 5:40Speaker 5: it's real, Okay. I don't what you do. So I
- 5:43Speaker 5: try to watch what I eat a little bit because
- 5:45Speaker 5: I am the one great thing that I can do
- 5:50Speaker 5: in life.
- 5:50Speaker 3: I can eat with anybody. I'm serious. I eat two bread.
- 5:55Speaker 3: I've already had two breakfasts today.
- 5:57Speaker 2: We'll get out of here, I mean, come on, I mean, phill.
- 5:59Speaker 2: We're taping this at nine thirty in the morning.
- 6:01Speaker 3: I mean, oh, well, yeah.
- 6:02Speaker 5: But you know, some of us get up early, right,
- 6:04Speaker 5: And that's the other thing with age. You know, I
- 6:07Speaker 5: look at the clock and I say five thirty. I go,
- 6:10Speaker 5: let me try to sleep another twenty minutes. But usually
- 6:12Speaker 5: I just got I walk the hell and I get up.
- 6:14Speaker 5: So I get up early, have an early breakfast, and
- 6:17Speaker 5: then you know, two hours later, I'm ready to eat again.
- 6:20Speaker 5: Of course, all you got to do is ask my sons.
- 6:22Speaker 5: They laughed their ass off about me. God, almighty, you
- 6:25Speaker 5: can eat, I said, yeah, you know why, because I
- 6:28Speaker 5: starved the whole life growing up in the house.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Were they eight kids, and that's right?
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah, so I was all the sacrifices you made, right,
- 6:35Speaker 2: you spent all the money on them, that's right.
- 6:37Speaker 5: Yeah, well yeah, so whatever. At one time this off season,
- 6:43Speaker 5: I was up to two sixty three.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Wow.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Yeah, no wow, And I liked it, you know, damn.
- 6:50Speaker 5: You know my clothes didn't fit, but it just felt good.
- 6:53Speaker 5: But I realized I had to dropped back down. Now
- 6:56Speaker 5: I'm at two forty five, so man, so I have
- 6:59Speaker 5: to cut down and I'm eating my one joy. And
- 7:01Speaker 5: I'm pretty good cook too, yeah we know better be
- 7:05Speaker 5: a decent cook too.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Did you cook your shell breakfast this morning? Or what? Twice?
- 7:09Speaker 3: Of course?
- 7:09Speaker 1: Of course?
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yes, what was the first one? If you don't mind
- 7:12Speaker 2: me asking the early one?
- 7:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I had a big bowl of yogurt, uh with
- 7:16Speaker 5: blueberry strawberries, uh crushed, not almonds. Well, I do have
- 7:22Speaker 5: those two walnuts, yeap, you know, pour a little something
- 7:25Speaker 5: on top of it, smash it, watch a little TV,
- 7:28Speaker 5: drink one cup of coffee or tea. And then I
- 7:31Speaker 5: had four eggs fried and I.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Put them on toast and put all this other stuff
- 7:37Speaker 3: on it, which is man, I eat it. It's ridiculous.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so good.
- 7:41Speaker 3: That's so good.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Go ahead tell So.
- 7:43Speaker 6: The reason why I'm such a great guess that things
- 7:45Speaker 6: like this watch party is because I'm wallpaper there. I'm
- 7:48Speaker 6: not there to interact with.
- 7:49Speaker 1: You don't even know he's there, right, Yeah, yeah.
- 7:52Speaker 3: I'm not gonna We didn't even talk, did we.
- 7:56Speaker 6: We talked for a little, but people people were stut
- 7:59Speaker 6: Gotts and Mike You were like, what's Phil doing? What's
- 8:01Speaker 6: Phil doing? I'm here to report. Nobody ate more fruit
- 8:05Speaker 6: that night than Phil sise.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Oh wow, yeah, yeah, I was caught. You know, I
- 8:12Speaker 3: probably had dinner before we went up there. I can't remember.
- 8:17Speaker 1: But what with the carrots? What are you doing there?
- 8:19Speaker 5: I mean, hey, just trying to fill up. No, I
- 8:24Speaker 5: don't like it until I feel like, God, damn, I'm full.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Yes, yes, great, great feeling for me.
- 8:30Speaker 3: I love that.
- 8:32Speaker 2: So you love the full feeling, and you love feeling
- 8:34Speaker 2: you loved like two sixty five was a good way
- 8:36Speaker 2: for you.
- 8:37Speaker 1: You're saying that's odd.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Oh I loved it. I love it.
- 8:40Speaker 5: Yeah, Like, man, you know, I'm just going boy. I
- 8:43Speaker 5: wish I had waited like this when I was younger.
- 8:46Speaker 5: I really would have taken some people down.
- 8:49Speaker 1: You would have played linebacker, you know.
- 8:55Speaker 6: Me.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Oh yes, Phil, what did you make of the Uh? Well,
- 9:00Speaker 2: it's hard because no one knows. So you're right, So Phil,
- 9:03Speaker 2: like Chris is sitting there doing his thing, but no
- 9:04Speaker 2: one really knows how good these draft picks are gonna be.
- 9:07Speaker 1: But what do you make of.
- 9:08Speaker 2: John Harbaugh's first drafts as the Giants head coach.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Well, it went great, it really did. You know.
- 9:14Speaker 5: I didn't study all the guys they drafted, but I
- 9:17Speaker 5: know getting Rvel Reese that was a great start. Getting
- 9:19Speaker 5: the lineman from Miami as another one. So you got
- 9:22Speaker 5: two big dudes on a team. Now, that makes the
- 9:25Speaker 5: team bigger, better, physically, all that stuff. And that's John
- 9:30Speaker 5: Harbaugh's way, and the Giants I think got away from
- 9:33Speaker 5: that for years. I mean, Bill Parcells always had a thing, well,
- 9:36Speaker 5: if we can't make our decision up, just take the
- 9:38Speaker 5: bigger guy.
- 9:40Speaker 3: You know.
- 9:40Speaker 5: And it's you know, the other thing is too just
- 9:43Speaker 5: about you know, why do they draft Rvel rees A
- 9:46Speaker 5: lot of people complained about that, whether they got this
- 9:49Speaker 5: and you know, and I learned this from George Jung
- 9:51Speaker 5: and Coach Parcells, don't be afraid of adding on to
- 9:55Speaker 5: one of the.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Strengths of your team. Interesting we did that.
- 9:59Speaker 5: And and you know, we had an unbelievable linebacking court
- 10:02Speaker 5: and we draft this guy, Carl Banks.
- 10:05Speaker 3: I went, oh my god, how many linebackers do we need.
- 10:10Speaker 1: He's a Hall of Famer, Yeah, I know.
- 10:12Speaker 3: He should be a Hall of famer. I mean Carl Banks.
- 10:15Speaker 5: You know, as time went on, it was pretty early,
- 10:18Speaker 5: maybe about the second year, I went, oh my god,
- 10:20Speaker 5: he's not good. Carl was great, yes, And you know,
- 10:26Speaker 5: if anybody wants to argue that with me, you can
- 10:28Speaker 5: almost look at any game, but look at the playoffs
- 10:31Speaker 5: in nineteen eighty six by our football team.
- 10:33Speaker 3: He was phenomenal in every game in the Super Bowl.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Listen, there should be a defensive MVP in the Super Bowls,
- 10:42Speaker 5: you know, because it's just it seems like it's just
- 10:44Speaker 5: totally always going to go to an offensive player.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Carl. When you watch the game, it was, it's unbelievable.
- 10:52Speaker 5: Yes, every series against Denver he made a play, made
- 10:55Speaker 5: a play, and they were outstanding too. Plays that he
- 10:59Speaker 5: would make. It wasn't just like oh here he comes,
- 11:00Speaker 5: I'll make a tackle. But when you play with Lawrence Taylor,
- 11:05Speaker 5: Harry Carson, you know we had Pepper johnsonbre like god, yeah, Harry,
- 11:08Speaker 5: reasons just on and on. You know, people don't pay
- 11:11Speaker 5: enough attention to you. So I'm always hey, I know Carl,
- 11:15Speaker 5: but I'm not. I don't like, we're not super super
- 11:19Speaker 5: close because we don't see each other that much. But
- 11:22Speaker 5: one day he's gonna. I think he's gonna get into
- 11:24Speaker 5: the Hall of Fame because he deserves it.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:26Speaker 2: So I'm certain like you were upset because you wanted
- 11:29Speaker 2: a wide receiver, a tackle, someone to protect you, maybe
- 11:32Speaker 2: a running back. But they get Carl Banks, and I'm
- 11:34Speaker 2: certain Lawrence was happy about it because it makes Lawrence
- 11:36Speaker 2: this job easier having Carl Banks.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Yes, who do we double team? You're screwed?
- 11:43Speaker 5: The year the one year I was down in Florida
- 11:47Speaker 5: on a little vacation because my kids were out of school,
- 11:49Speaker 5: and the draft was happening, and it was eighty six
- 11:53Speaker 5: and I think we drafted seven straight defensive players. And
- 11:58Speaker 5: I was sitting in you know, by the TV, and going,
- 12:01Speaker 5: all right, here it comes, oh, oh my god, another
- 12:04Speaker 5: defensive corner. Well I just finally I walked outside and said,
- 12:08Speaker 5: I'm gonna quit watching.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Yeah, but that defense he put together. The great offense
- 12:15Speaker 2: we never seen Buffalo.
- 12:18Speaker 5: Right, no doubt it was Hey, that's why, Oh jeez,
- 12:23Speaker 5: that's why they weren't asking my opinion on any of
- 12:25Speaker 5: those picks.
- 12:28Speaker 2: You would have been running back, wide receiver, tackle, running back, some.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Good old lineman.
- 12:34Speaker 5: Web was the next thing always man, we always had
- 12:37Speaker 5: reserve offensive linemen. Somebody hurt, we got the guy that
- 12:41Speaker 5: comes in and might be might be even better. And
- 12:45Speaker 5: you know, that was a great thing I and all
- 12:47Speaker 5: my years, probably most of my years of the fifteen
- 12:50Speaker 5: let's just say twelve, I had what you call a
- 12:52Speaker 5: franchise center in front of me, and man, that was
- 12:55Speaker 5: awesome because they do a lot of work, which is true,
- 12:59Speaker 5: who the blob do this off? And the other thing
- 13:01Speaker 5: was great about it. If I didn't like the way
- 13:04Speaker 5: things were going, we'd sit on the bench. I would
- 13:06Speaker 5: just cuss them out.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Man.
- 13:10Speaker 5: I said to bart Oates recently, I go, why didn't
- 13:12Speaker 5: you just turn and punch me in the face.
- 13:14Speaker 3: He goes, well, you're the quarterback. Oh that's why you
- 13:18Speaker 3: didn't do it. But I would.
- 13:20Speaker 5: I would get on them so bad on the bench
- 13:22Speaker 5: and then held, it's nothing my fault, Phil, Why you
- 13:25Speaker 5: I said, you don't understand, I don't care whose fault
- 13:28Speaker 5: it is. Fix it and they would barely. Bart would
- 13:31Speaker 5: go okay, I'll fix it right. Always they never.
- 13:35Speaker 3: You know, so we had a good relationship.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Maybe it's because, as Parcels said, you softened them up
- 13:40Speaker 5: one year Sims, because you were always buying them gifts.
- 13:43Speaker 3: You were taking them out the dinner all the time.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Oh, Parcels hates that.
- 13:46Speaker 3: I hated it now, but you know you used to
- 13:49Speaker 3: lead them, but not anymore.
- 13:50Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, Bill, I survived eight years of Bill Parcells.
- 14:00Speaker 3: The title of my book.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I'm here for that book. We have a TV show
- 14:05Speaker 1: in a book. Now, look at you.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Oh yeah, there you go. I'm telling you it is true.
- 14:09Speaker 3: People never came out.
- 14:11Speaker 5: And was in the day where he was just gonna
- 14:14Speaker 5: watch practice and not be you know, No, it was
- 14:16Speaker 5: every day. Yeah, every day, seven thirty in the morning.
- 14:21Speaker 5: I'm a little late for me to get there. I
- 14:24Speaker 5: opened up the door to the locker room. Of course,
- 14:26Speaker 5: there's nobody in it yet. And as I took a
- 14:28Speaker 5: step in, I look over and Bill Parcells is sitting
- 14:31Speaker 5: in a little group of chairs that we had in
- 14:33Speaker 5: our locker room. And at that time he was smoking
- 14:36Speaker 5: and he had a cup of coffee. He had a cigarette,
- 14:38Speaker 5: and he goes sims. I go, yeah, coach, yeah, come here.
- 14:43Speaker 5: And I go, oh my god, seven thirty and here
- 14:45Speaker 5: we go, and he goes, tell me how many how
- 14:48Speaker 5: many passes you complete yesterday?
- 14:49Speaker 3: And practice is it. I don't know.
- 14:53Speaker 5: He goes, I'll tell you how many, not very many,
- 14:59Speaker 5: taking a drag of his right. Oh yeah yeah, And
- 15:01Speaker 5: then he goes, you know, I tossed and turn all
- 15:04Speaker 5: night my damn bed, and my wife says, oh, Bill,
- 15:06Speaker 5: what's the matter.
- 15:07Speaker 3: He goes, My f in quarterback can't complete a pass
- 15:13Speaker 3: That was the start of my day.
- 15:15Speaker 5: And you know, all day long, which I'm not exaggerating either,
- 15:18Speaker 5: all day long, all you kept thinking of practice is
- 15:20Speaker 5: coming because I don't care who you were, right, He's
- 15:25Speaker 5: gonna get you.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Yeah, different different kind of coat, different time, Phil, different time.
- 15:30Speaker 1: That didn't happen.
- 15:31Speaker 2: But I do see like there are some qualities in
- 15:33Speaker 2: John Harba that remind me of Bill Parcells.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Is that fair?
- 15:36Speaker 5: Oh it's more than fair. I think you just smashed
- 15:39Speaker 5: it right, and you did it.
- 15:41Speaker 3: That's it. I think he is.
- 15:43Speaker 5: You know, it might be delivered a little nicer, but yeah,
- 15:48Speaker 5: I think he's Bill Parcells. I think the organization really
- 15:51Speaker 5: made a big U turn here this year. Yes, yeah,
- 15:54Speaker 5: I'm going down there next week for a couple of days.
- 15:57Speaker 3: And you know, I can't wait to go to see everybody.
- 15:59Speaker 5: And and I don't know if they have. OTA's how
- 16:02Speaker 5: I can't keep up with all that stuff. But yeah,
- 16:05Speaker 5: just the new people.
- 16:06Speaker 3: They brought in the way they're thinking.
- 16:09Speaker 5: John Harball I covered him so many times when he
- 16:11Speaker 5: was a coach down there, and we had a good relationship.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Sometimes it was a little a little that sure guys
- 16:19Speaker 5: like the Patriots more than you're like us. And I said, no,
- 16:22Speaker 5: I said, John, I hate everybody.
- 16:24Speaker 3: He said, don't.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Worry, but John's going to embrace the history of the
- 16:30Speaker 2: Giants and teams like your teams and players like you
- 16:34Speaker 2: feel more so than I think other coaches would, because
- 16:36Speaker 2: he respects and appreciates the history of the game.
- 16:39Speaker 1: You know.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Well, yeah, you know, of course it's the Harball family.
- 16:43Speaker 5: And I said to him, you know, I'm a little
- 16:46Speaker 5: mad at you, And he goes, why would you be mad?
- 16:49Speaker 5: I said, you know, you were at Morehead State coaching.
- 16:51Speaker 5: You only stayed one year. Couldn't you stay for a couple?
- 16:56Speaker 1: Yeah? Bigger fish to fry Phil.
- 16:58Speaker 5: We had not Harball there and at one time his
- 17:01Speaker 5: dad coach down there, I think, and then we had
- 17:03Speaker 5: the Ryan brothers. Yeah yeah, And it was probably the
- 17:07Speaker 5: best season Morehead State ever had in football.
- 17:11Speaker 1: So you know.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Can you imagine Rex Ryan down there being a coordinator.
- 17:15Speaker 2: And not oh no, no, no. They would call me
- 17:18Speaker 2: after games, really Rex.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Because we could.
- 17:22Speaker 5: We lost twenty some straight years to Eastern Kentucky the
- 17:25Speaker 5: last year and Rex is there and what does he do?
- 17:29Speaker 5: You know, he's blitzing everybody every down and they crushed
- 17:33Speaker 5: East and they.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Call me, hey, we beat them, whatever the score was.
- 17:36Speaker 3: I forgot.
- 17:37Speaker 5: I said, oh my god, really that you know? And
- 17:40Speaker 5: I said, how many blitzers did you know? I said
- 17:42Speaker 5: to one of the coaches. He goes, oh, every dawn.
- 17:47Speaker 5: So I think Rex was only there one year too,
- 17:50Speaker 5: maybe two, I'm not sure.

- 19:36Speaker 7: In Louisiana, Phil, what do you make of the Eagles?
- 19:53Speaker 3: Like?
- 19:54Speaker 2: For me, it's it's so interesting how dysfunctional this team
- 19:56Speaker 2: appears to be while being one of the best teams
- 19:59Speaker 2: in the NFL. What do you make of a guy
- 20:01Speaker 2: like AJ Brown who has made it clear, Hey, I
- 20:03Speaker 2: don't want to be around the team that has a
- 20:05Speaker 2: chance to win the Super Bowl.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Get me out of here. I want my numbers.
- 20:09Speaker 3: You know, there's a part of me, a big part
- 20:12Speaker 3: I agree with AJ Brown.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Yeah, look, first.
- 20:18Speaker 5: Off, you know they designed plays to throw the ball
- 20:21Speaker 5: to him. And you know, I never really we were
- 20:25Speaker 5: about a tight end run the ball offense. We threw
- 20:27Speaker 5: mostly or not mostly, but a lot to the tight
- 20:29Speaker 5: ends because they were so good and the wide receivers
- 20:33Speaker 5: even and I every once in why go hey, man,
- 20:35Speaker 5: just hanging there, I'm going to get the ball to
- 20:36Speaker 5: you because they would get a little frustrated too. So
- 20:39Speaker 5: can you imagine a guy like AJ Brown who really
- 20:42Speaker 5: is could you know he has Hall of Fame talent, Yes,
- 20:46Speaker 5: and he's there. And then when you watch the film,
- 20:49Speaker 5: always open so oh, always open there.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Oh.
- 20:53Speaker 5: So you know, you gotta if you're going to get
- 20:55Speaker 5: these guys and have them out there, you got to
- 20:58Speaker 5: find ways to get them the football to keep them
- 20:59Speaker 5: having beat.
- 21:00Speaker 3: And that's just the that's the world right now. And
- 21:03Speaker 3: don't complain.
- 21:04Speaker 5: You know, if you get one that doesn't care and
- 21:06Speaker 5: he just plays hard, great for you. But most wide receivers,
- 21:10Speaker 5: you know, when the game's over, they want to have
- 21:11Speaker 5: their catches and at least some and feel like they're
- 21:14Speaker 5: part of the team.
- 21:16Speaker 3: But yeah, it's it's the quarterback.
- 21:18Speaker 5: They kind of went downhill because the offensive line wasn't
- 21:21Speaker 5: as good and you know now they're losing some of
- 21:23Speaker 5: their really good pass rushers over the last year or too.
- 21:25Speaker 5: So that's you know, it's amazing the NFL. I don't
- 21:27Speaker 5: know if I'm really crazy about it. You build a team,
- 21:29Speaker 5: but you can't hold onto it because of money, right
- 21:32Speaker 5: you know, So that's I think that's a big reason.
- 21:35Speaker 5: And the wide receivers were frustrated because the football wasn't
- 21:39Speaker 5: coming their way enough.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Yep. And I understand that, I really do.
- 21:42Speaker 2: So, you understand Aja wanting to get the ball, wanted
- 21:45Speaker 2: to get his numbers, even if, even if it means
- 21:47Speaker 2: he gets traded away to a team that's not not
- 21:51Speaker 2: as good as the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I'm surprising.
- 21:54Speaker 2: That's surprising from you, Phil because you have to give
- 21:56Speaker 2: up a little bit of your numbers and your stats
- 21:58Speaker 2: in order to have.
- 21:58Speaker 1: A championship team. I figured that's where you were going
- 22:01Speaker 1: to go.
- 22:01Speaker 3: You know, well, yeah that you got that. But it
- 22:05Speaker 3: wasn't even closer.
- 22:06Speaker 1: He's already done it, right, Yes, I mean.
- 22:08Speaker 5: It was like one catch, two throws towards him or
- 22:12Speaker 5: something a couple of times like wow, yeah, you know
- 22:14Speaker 5: I'd sit there and go. Of course, like a lot
- 22:16Speaker 5: of old players. Man, you put a j on our team,
- 22:19Speaker 5: I promise you I'll be throwing at some.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Baby every down. Yes, well yeah, whether he was covered
- 22:25Speaker 1: or not.
- 22:25Speaker 5: Right, Well, that was our great I don't want to
- 22:29Speaker 5: say great, but that was our plus against everybody. We
- 22:34Speaker 5: threw to wide receivers and tight ends and running backs.
- 22:38Speaker 5: If you're not open, we're gonna throw it behind you,
- 22:40Speaker 5: back shoulders and all that. I mean, it was that
- 22:43Speaker 5: was our passing game, right, throw it you know, back
- 22:46Speaker 5: shoulder throws to the wide receivers, especially when you get
- 22:49Speaker 5: down inside to twenty four touchdowns. And we had two
- 22:52Speaker 5: tight ends, Zeke Mowatt and.
- 22:53Speaker 8: Mark Mbarrow exceptional tight ends. Yes, you could throw it anywhere. Yes,
- 22:58Speaker 8: they knew where I was going to throw throw it.
- 23:01Speaker 8: They're running, they see the guy here, I might throw
- 23:03Speaker 8: it behind him and low. And it was like yeah, yeah,
- 23:05Speaker 8: good good. You know, we didn't even look at each
- 23:07Speaker 8: other and go wow, good throw, good catch expected.
- 23:10Speaker 5: Yes, as Bill Parcells said to me once he was
- 23:14Speaker 5: watching film with us, which was never fun.
- 23:17Speaker 3: And Mark Bavarro ran like.
- 23:20Speaker 5: A corner route and went to, you know, up the field,
- 23:22Speaker 5: up and he's covered. So I turn and drop it
- 23:25Speaker 5: off to the running back and he goes, sims, he's
- 23:27Speaker 5: running back.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Why did you throw it to Bavarro?
- 23:30Speaker 5: This is early in Bavarro's cress And and I got
- 23:33Speaker 5: a little mad because I thought I made the right read.
- 23:35Speaker 5: And I go because he's covered. He goes, don't you
- 23:42Speaker 5: understand when he's covered, he's open? And I went, which
- 23:48Speaker 5: is a strange dialogue to have, and I go, yeah,
- 23:51Speaker 5: I got you, You're.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Right right, Just put it up there. I'll get it right.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Yes, throw it to the right spot. Because he was smart.
- 23:57Speaker 5: Zeke Maud had Howard cross across is the biggest tight
- 24:01Speaker 5: end in the history of the NFL.
- 24:03Speaker 3: So throw it anywhere. And of course his hands were unbelievable.
- 24:09Speaker 3: I don't think he ever dropped the damn pass, but
- 24:11Speaker 3: he had hands.
- 24:11Speaker 5: I'm saying, if they measured him like the combine, they'd
- 24:14Speaker 5: be like twelves.
- 24:18Speaker 2: What did you make of the rams? It was weird,
- 24:21Speaker 2: the whole story. Trying to protect Matthew Stafford. They made
- 24:25Speaker 2: it clear he's the quarterback for now, when Stafford's a
- 24:27Speaker 2: Hall of Fame quarterback.
- 24:29Speaker 1: But they drafted for the future.
- 24:30Speaker 2: And I thought it was smart, and I thought it
- 24:32Speaker 2: was ridiculous the great lengths they went to kind of
- 24:34Speaker 2: keep that secret.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 24:36Speaker 5: Yeah, well, everything was just about I think it was
- 24:38Speaker 5: two things. I feel pretty confident in say this. It
- 24:42Speaker 5: was two things. One they wanted to make sure Matthew
- 24:44Speaker 5: Stafford was understanding there, right, but.
- 24:47Speaker 1: You appreciate of course, right, yes, sure.
- 24:49Speaker 5: And you know the Giants drafted Dave Brown one year
- 24:52Speaker 5: in the first round. Yes, they actually called me and
- 24:55Speaker 5: told me. I said, hey, well, I said, wow, Dave Brown, dude, right, yeah, okay,
- 25:01Speaker 5: but and.
- 25:02Speaker 1: You were okay with it. You understood what they were doing, right, Yeah.
- 25:05Speaker 5: What what How did you ask the question at first? That's well, well, it's.
- 25:09Speaker 2: So they went to great length. There was a secret
- 25:11Speaker 2: meeting with ty Simpson. They didn't want the news to
- 25:13Speaker 2: get out there. They wanted to make sure Stafford they
- 25:16Speaker 2: did all the right things. It just seemed it seemed
- 25:18Speaker 2: like they really went out of their way to announce Hey,
- 25:20Speaker 2: it's still Matthew Stafford's team.
- 25:22Speaker 1: We know it's still Matthew Stafford, right.
- 25:23Speaker 5: Right, And Matthew Stafford went to Los Angeles. I had
- 25:26Speaker 5: arguments all the time during the week. Well you know
- 25:29Speaker 5: he's never won a big game, you know, I said, yeah,
- 25:31Speaker 5: you know, you're right, You're right. Yeah, because many years
- 25:34Speaker 5: before the season started I said, wow, Detroit, I think
- 25:37Speaker 5: they're a super Bowl team. And they would go okay, okay,
- 25:40Speaker 5: good point, yeah, no kidding, they were no, good, how
- 25:44Speaker 5: about they gonna way if they.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Want a game.
- 25:46Speaker 5: It was a miracle, right, But I'll say this, I
- 25:50Speaker 5: felt I said it many times. You can look it
- 25:52Speaker 5: up on podcasts whatever not that you want to or
- 25:55Speaker 5: will I will, I said, ty Simpson fits the Rams
- 26:00Speaker 5: offense perfectly. He's everything that you would want for that offense.
- 26:06Speaker 5: And Sean McVay, Sean McVay had to look at him
- 26:08Speaker 5: and go, really good, arm, very mobile, always too small.
- 26:14Speaker 5: Well that you know what, you don't have to really
- 26:15Speaker 5: worry about it as much because they do all those
- 26:18Speaker 5: play actions one way, they roll the other way. They
- 26:21Speaker 5: got space all around them and just wait for somebody
- 26:24Speaker 5: to come open deep and rip it and that'll be
- 26:26Speaker 5: Ty Simpson. So Matthew Stafford, if I had to guess,
- 26:31Speaker 5: it's going to be one or two years. But you know,
- 26:34Speaker 5: think about this also, he plays hurt all the time
- 26:38Speaker 5: every year. And now if you get hit Ty Simpson
- 26:42Speaker 5: up to speed, you go, let's just give him, Matt
- 26:45Speaker 5: Stafford just one game off here to recuperate and whatever.
- 26:49Speaker 5: I think that's a big deal too, because man, he
- 26:51Speaker 5: played a couple of games this year. It was unbelievable.
- 26:54Speaker 5: He played with the injuries he was dealing with. But
- 26:57Speaker 5: he's tough as hell and got one of the great
- 27:00Speaker 5: at arms we've ever seen in the NFL. I'm not
- 27:02Speaker 5: saying ty Simpson's arm is Matthew Stafford's. But it's not
- 27:06Speaker 5: far behind, that's.
- 27:07Speaker 1: For sure, right, And you like to fit in la
- 27:09Speaker 1: with That's interesting.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Yeah, Phil, we're very friendly with uh, with Mike Golick
- 27:14Speaker 2: and his entire family. Did Mike Golick ever sack you?
- 27:18Speaker 2: Do you remember playing against Mike Golic Senior?
- 27:21Speaker 3: Oh? Yeah, sure, sure, yeah.
- 27:24Speaker 5: I mean I don't remember him hitting me because guys hitting.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Me, because.
- 27:31Speaker 5: Yeah, Jerome Brown, you know, I mean, my god, their
- 27:35Speaker 5: front seven was like.
- 27:39Speaker 3: It was unbelievable.
- 27:40Speaker 1: And Golik used to well.
- 27:42Speaker 2: Golic does tell us that Reggie White would look over
- 27:45Speaker 2: to him before the ball was snabbed and he would say, hey, Mike,
- 27:49Speaker 2: do me a favor.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Don't move or move backwards, and.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Mike would be like why, He's like, you get my way.
- 28:00Speaker 3: I tell you, I was working out one off season.
- 28:03Speaker 5: And right before the draft, where a bunch of us
- 28:05Speaker 5: and parcels comes in and he looks as we start
- 28:08Speaker 5: talking about the draft just a little. He goes, ah, sims,
- 28:11Speaker 5: our life is about ready to change.
- 28:13Speaker 3: And I go why, well, why would what are you
- 28:16Speaker 3: talking about? He goes this, this I think it was Detroit.
- 28:20Speaker 5: Detroit is gonna screw us in the draft and the
- 28:22Speaker 5: Eagles are going to get Jerome Brown, and I went, oh.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Is he is really as good as everybody says?
- 28:27Speaker 5: He goes, hell, he might be better than Reggie. I.
- 28:31Speaker 3: This is gonna be two ass weapons I'm gonna take
- 28:33Speaker 3: this year.
- 28:35Speaker 5: I won't even tell you the stories about my interactions
- 28:38Speaker 5: with with with Reggie White. They were I would say things,
- 28:44Speaker 5: you know, he was a minister that I should never
- 28:46Speaker 5: say to a minister, but I did.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Right. Well, it's football.
- 28:48Speaker 5: So of course one time I'm in the locker room
- 28:53Speaker 5: before the game and I tell people this, and I
- 28:55Speaker 5: really mean, I'd sit there. I wouldn't study the playbook
- 28:57Speaker 5: anymore because that was useless, and I just go, all right,
- 29:01Speaker 5: come on, hang in there.
- 29:02Speaker 3: It's gonna be rough hanging there.
- 29:03Speaker 5: Just got to hang in That's all I kept talking
- 29:05Speaker 5: to myself, don't worry about You're gonna take a lot
- 29:07Speaker 5: of hits. And then we were at Giants Stadium one year,
- 29:10Speaker 5: maybe the year after I had said all this, and
- 29:13Speaker 5: they're hitting me every play and they would pick me
- 29:18Speaker 5: up under the each arm and they would slap me
- 29:21Speaker 5: on the ass and.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Go, come on, hang in there. I remember just thinking,
- 29:27Speaker 3: do they hate me that much or do they respect me?
- 29:32Speaker 3: By the way.
- 29:34Speaker 5: And they told me actually in Hawaii at the Pro Bowl,
- 29:37Speaker 5: they said, oh man, we love you.
- 29:39Speaker 3: You got damn you show, you know, And I go, wow, well,
- 29:41Speaker 3: you don't act like you love me. I'm not exaggerating that.
- 29:47Speaker 3: And of course it seemed like we would play the
- 29:49Speaker 3: Eagles in really bad, cold, windy weather, which makes it
- 29:53Speaker 3: almost impossible to throw the damn things sometimes, so that
- 29:56Speaker 3: was another advantage they would have. And yeah it was.
- 30:00Speaker 3: It was check your courage card.
- 30:03Speaker 1: You need h Yeah during that time, no tough team, yeah,
- 30:07Speaker 1: no doubt so, Stu, I'm looking up the stats. It
- 30:09Speaker 1: looks like Phil.
- 30:10Speaker 6: Simms played in twenty one games against the Eagles and
- 30:14Speaker 6: he was sacked fifty two times.
- 30:17Speaker 1: In those games. Yes, but none by goalie.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Is go look on there for half a sack.
- 30:24Speaker 6: So I can't see individual players, but I could see
- 30:28Speaker 6: sacks by game.
- 30:30Speaker 5: Uh.
- 30:30Speaker 6: One time they got you six times in nineteen eighty one.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Yes, and then I.
- 30:37Speaker 3: Was young, Okay, I remember, so Phil.
- 30:42Speaker 2: We mentioned Reggie and we mentioned Jerome Brown in that
- 30:45Speaker 2: menacing defense. We don't even imagine Clyde Simmons, like ridiculous.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Look at the Linebacking Corps. That was there. Hell, they
- 30:52Speaker 3: really should have been down Lineman.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Uh so, Phil on the way out here, and we
- 30:56Speaker 2: appreciate your time. We love talking to you. I could
- 30:58Speaker 2: talk to you all day, I really could.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Good.
- 31:00Speaker 2: How do you feel about a guy? Taylor who's thirty
- 31:03Speaker 2: one years old? Okay, he's at a wedding. It's open bar.
- 31:07Speaker 2: He steps up to the open bar. You figure he's
- 31:10Speaker 2: gonna get, you know, maybe a beer and a shot,
- 31:12Speaker 2: maybe a glass of wine, perhaps you know, some whiskey.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Not Taylor.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Thirty one year old Taylor walks up to the bar
- 31:20Speaker 2: and asks the bartender for a Shirley Temple. How do
- 31:23Speaker 2: you feel about that? I love a good Shirley Temple.
- 31:26Speaker 2: I don't know how you feel about.
