Transcript
- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo! Ready for another market adventure? Luna: Ready! I've been practicing my buying-phrases from last time. Saya mahu kubis, I remember that. Lucas: Nice! Today we're tackling another common item at the market: tomatoes. In Malay, tomato is tomato. Same spelling, but we say it with a bit of a Malay accent: toh mah toh. Luna: Tomato. Okay, that's easy. So if I want to buy tomatoes, I'd say 'Saya mahu tomato'. Lucas: Exactly. Saya mahu tomato. Let's hear you say it. Luna: Saya mahu tomato. Lucas: Perfect. Now the seller will probably ask how many or how much. To ask the price per kilo, you say 'Berapa harga sekilo?' Remember that from our earlier episodes? Luna: Berapa harga sekilo? Yes, I remember! So Berapa harga sekilo for tomato. Lucas: Right. Now let's say the seller answers: 'Tiga ringgit sekilo.' Three ringgit per kilo. You might want to comment on the tomatoes. They look red and fresh. You can say 'Tomato ini merah' — these tomatoes are red. Luna: Tomato ini merah. But what if they're not red? Could I say 'Tomato ini hijau'? Lucas: Exactly! Hijau means green. So 'Tomato ini hijau.' Good thinking. Now you decide to buy half a kilo. How would you say 'I want half a kilo'? Luna: Umm... Saya mahu setengah kilo. Setengah is half, right? Lucas: Yes! Setengah kilo. So 'Saya mahu setengah kilo.' You've got it. Luna: Saya mahu setengah kilo tomato. Lucas: Great. Now you might want the seller to cut them. To ask 'Can you cut?' say 'Boleh potong?' Potong means cut. Luna: Boleh potong? Simple enough. Lucas: Let's put it all together in a mini scene. I'm the seller, you're the buyer. Go ahead. Luna: Okay. Saya mahu tomato. Berapa harga sekilo? Lucas: Tiga ringgit sekilo. Tomato ini merah. Luna: Bagus. Saya mahu setengah kilo. Boleh potong? Lucas: Boleh. So you just bought half a kilo of tomatoes, cut. Well done, Luna! Luna: That felt real! I could actually use this. Lucas: And if you're learning from these episodes, you probably feel the same way. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Malay, consider supporting the show. A couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, if you've gotten something out of them. Luna: Yeah, it really helps us keep making new episodes. So if you can, that's awesome. Lucas: Alright, back to tomatoes! Remember the phrases: Saya mahu tomato, Berapa harga sekilo, Tomato ini merah, Saya mahu setengah kilo, Boleh potong. Practice these before your next market trip. Luna: I'm going to try them this weekend. Saya mahu tomato! Lucas: That's the spirit. Thanks for joining us on Learn Malay with Fexingo. Practice till we chat again.
