- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical Crossroads, The

- 0:13and I'm your host, Will Walden. SpaceX is actively preparing for
- 0:17the third flight of its colossal Starship rocket following the
- 0:21completion of a static fire test of Ship 28 in the positioning of
- 0:25Booster 10 at the Starbase launch site in South Texas.
- 0:29Now this progress comes just one month after the second flight of
- 0:32Starship. With the upcoming test
- 0:34potentially including an all in space propellant transfer and a
- 0:39controlled landing in the ocean near Hawaii A SpaceX conducted a
- 0:43successful static fire test of Ship 28 six Raptor engines
- 0:47showing no evident damage to the rocket or the ground equipment.
- 0:51Now concurrently, Booster 10 was moved to the launchpad and
- 0:55conducted fueling and a possible ground systems problem.
- 0:59The test was scrubbed. Now following these tests,
- 1:02SpaceX plans to stack the Starship upper stage.
- 1:06A top Booster 10 nearing completion of the launch vehicle
- 1:09for the integrated flight Test 3 and the third Starship flight
- 1:13aims to advance its flight profile, including a controlled
- 1:16ocean landing and possibly an in space propellant transfer,
- 1:20though this remains unconfirmed now.
- 1:23The second Starship launch in November demonstrated marked
- 1:27improvements over the first attempt, notably in engine
- 1:30reliability in the execution of a complex hot staging maneuver.
- 1:34Kathy Leaders, Spacex's general manager for the Starship launch
- 1:37site, hinted at targeting the first quarter of the next year
- 1:40for the third test flight, aligning with the company's
- 1:43ambitious schedule. And post second flight, SpaceX
- 1:46has made minimal hardware modifications, suggesting
- 1:50software related issues. Regulatory approval from the FAA
- 1:53is still pending following their designation of the second flight
- 1:57as a mishap, and Ship 28 and Booster Ten were swiftly
- 2:01transferred to the launch site following the second flight,
- 2:04with Ship 28 undergoing a series of tests, including a spin prime
- 2:08test. Spacex's dismantling of
- 2:11suborbital Pad A to build a second launch tower suggests a
- 2:15shift in testing locations, potentially centralizing engine
- 2:19tests at the Massey's facility. Primarily, tests with Booster 10
- 2:24involve partial fueling followed by a lengthy hold and eventual
- 2:28safety pressurization, indicating ongoing diagnostic
- 2:31processes. No word on if the ground systems
- 2:34were affected during this testing.
- 2:36At SpaceX is waiting for FAA approval for the third flight,
- 2:39having conducted the six engine fire test to have shipped 28 at
- 2:43the Starbase facility, and the Super heavy flight intends to
- 2:46reach orbit and splash down near Hawaii.
- 2:48With NASA already planning to use a modified Starship for
- 2:51lunar landings and potential crude missions to Mars, recent
- 2:55inspections by Elon Musk reveal the Starship Launchpad's
- 2:58robustness, requiring no refurbishment post launch, a
- 3:02significant improvement from the first Test flight's pad
- 3:04destruction. Despite 2 explosions in the
- 3:06second flight, the Starship's upper stage achieved separation
- 3:09and Space Flight, albeit not reaching orbit, and the
- 3:12launchpad remained intact, signaling readiness for future
- 3:16attempts. Now, NASA's commitment to using
- 3:18Starship for the Artemis 3 lunar mission hinges on successful
- 3:22orbital tests in flight refueling and a lunar landing
- 3:25test. With SpaceX transitioning from
- 3:27Texas tests to operational flights from Kennedy Space
- 3:31Center or KSC, SpaceX is innovating with the Megazilla
- 3:35Launch integration tower and the Twin Chopsticks arms at both
- 3:38Texas and KSC sites, aiming for quick turn around and booster
- 3:43landing capabilities sometime in the future.
- 3:46And SpaceX is constructing a second crew capable launch tower
- 3:49at Cape Canaveral, replicating Texas pad improvements with NASA
- 3:53and the FAA closely monitoring and regulating starships
- 3:56development for future commercial launches.
