Latest / DEWA Podcasts / WETEX 2026 explores innovative solutions to enhance water security and resource sustainability
Transcript
- 0:00Water security is no longer only about producing
- 0:02more water, but about diversifying sources, reusing
- 0:07water, cutting losses and running networks under
- 0:10climate pressure. And the numbers behind that
- 0:13shift are sobering. The World Bank warns that
- 0:17under current policies and projected climate
- 0:19scenarios, urban water availability could decline
- 0:22by up to two -thirds by 2050, compared with 2015
- 0:27levels. That is the backdrop for the 28th Water,
- 0:31Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition,
- 0:34organised by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority
- 0:38at the Dubai World Trade Centre, from 20th to
- 0:4122nd October 2026. It showcases water production,
- 0:47desalination, wastewater treatment and reuse,
- 0:51smart networks, leak detection and advanced resource
- 0:54management. His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al
- 0:58-Tair, Managing Director and Chief Executive
- 1:01Officer of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority,
- 1:04founder and chairman of the Water, Energy, Technology
- 1:07and Environment Exhibition, explained the approach.
- 1:10He said, Enhancing water security requires an
- 1:14integrated approach that diversifies water sources,
- 1:18improves water use efficiency, invests in technologies
- 1:22that reduce the energy required for desalination,
- 1:25minimises losses, expands water reuse and strengthens
- 1:30network resilience. The Water, Energy, Technology
- 1:33and Environment exhibition provides a global
- 1:36platform for technology providers, utilities,
- 1:40investors and decision makers to showcase solutions
- 1:43and connect innovation with investment and implementation.
- 1:48This supports the development of a more efficient,
- 1:50sustainable and resilient water ecosystem that
- 1:54keeps pace with growth and preserves resources
- 1:56for current and future generations. Desalination
- 2:00is the first pillar and the direction is lower
- 2:03energy consumption. Advances in reverse osmosis,
- 2:07high efficiency membranes and pumps and clean
- 2:10energy are transforming the sector. Seawater
- 2:14reverse osmosis generally consumes less energy
- 2:17than multistage flash distillation. The Hacien
- 2:20seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant is
- 2:24among the world's largest, with a planned production
- 2:27capacity of 180 million imperial gallons per
- 2:31day. By 2030, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority
- 2:35aims to produce 100 % of its desalinated water
- 2:39from clean energy and waste heat. Water reuse
- 2:43is the second pillar. The World Bank estimates
- 2:46that municipal and industrial water reuse could
- 2:49increase eightfold worldwide by 2040, reaching
- 2:54430 million cubic metres per day, a source far
- 2:58more resilient to climate variability. The third
- 3:02pillar is the network, because water lost never
- 3:05reaches the customer. Dubai Electricity and Water
- 3:09Authority has cut transmission and distribution
- 3:11losses from 42 .5 % in 1989 to 4 .4 % in 2025.
- 3:19Its Hydro Insight system uses artificial intelligence
- 3:23to turn data into actionable insights. So the
- 3:27conclusion is integrated by design. Lower emission
- 3:31desalination, treatment and reuse. and digital
- 3:35networks that cut losses. Water security now
- 3:39means managing every drop across the water cycle,
- 3:42and that is what this exhibition is built to
- 3:45advance.
