Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Inside The Tape With Greg Cosell: Despite Atypical OL Performance, Jalen Hurts Made The Difference
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Welcome back everybody to inside the Tape. Here on Inside
- 0:13the Birds, I'm Jeff Mosher alongside Adam Kaplan, and we've
- 0:16got Greg Cosell with us to finish off our Eagles
- 0:20breakdown of their twenty four to twenty win over the
- 0:22Cowboys in the season opener. In the first episode, we
- 0:25did the Eagles defense, and in this one, we are
- 0:28going to do the Eagles offense. And you know, Greg,
- 0:31we've all we all joked, we talked a little bit.
- 0:33It was it felt like a very Eagles like game.
- 0:36From an offensive standpoint. You saw a lot of Saquon Barkley.
- 0:39You saw Jalen Hurts the ball deep. You saw Jalen
- 0:42Hurts run when he could run. And then of course
- 0:45sometimes you saw the pass offense, especially in the second half,
- 0:48just not have the juice that it had earlier. So
- 0:51you saw everything there.
- 0:52Speaker 2: You know, it's funny. I you know, I know a
- 0:54lot of people probably felt that, oh, you know, something's wrong,
- 0:56what's going on, But you know, people have to remember
- 0:59what the team is. They're actually a very smart offensive
- 1:03team and I think Jalen Hurts plays really smart, intelligent football.
- 1:07But there were eight games last year out of eighteen starts.
- 1:11I'm not counting the game in which he left the
- 1:13Washington game early when he got hurt. There were eight
- 1:16games in which he threw for less than two hundred yards.
- 1:19They're not really a true passing team the way much
- 1:22of the NFL is. They're a very smart offensive team
- 1:26that showed up in this game. You know, Jalen hurts.
- 1:30He only had one pass in this game that went
- 1:32more than eleven yards from the line of scrimmage, and
- 1:35that was the ball to dots In, which was a
- 1:36great throw. But you know, it was a chain moving
- 1:40kind of game. It was, you know, there were no
- 1:43big plays really other than the Dotson play. The only
- 1:45thing missing that happened all seemingly every single week last year,
- 1:50which made their scores seem bigger because they did get bigger,
- 1:53was Barkley would have big runs in the second half.
- 1:56That didn't happen in this game. In fact, I think
- 1:58his last seven runs only game to or or two.
- 2:01You know, and and people say, well, they put eight
- 2:03in the box. Come on, people really going to say
- 2:05something as stupid as that. He always they always have
- 2:08eight in the I mean, every team tries to shut
- 2:11down Barkley. That's not a big surprise, you know, But
- 2:14the point is that's what happened last year, is they'd
- 2:16get a big Barkley run or two late in games.
- 2:19I mean, the guy had twelve hundred plus yards in
- 2:21the second half alone last year. You know, everything like
- 2:25seven yards or rush or whatever it was in the
- 2:27in the second half. So that that didn't happen in
- 2:30this imagine if that happened in this game and they
- 2:32win thirty seven to twenty, and everybody'd say, oh, the
- 2:35Eagles are right where we expected them to be.
- 2:39Speaker 3: On that Greg because people want to know was it
- 2:43and it looked like Jeff and I were talking about it,
- 2:44looks like he actually made some yards on his own
- 2:46where maybe it wasn't block grate. What do you think
- 2:48about the run blocking?
- 2:49Speaker 2: Anything standing out to you? Was it their best game? No?
- 2:53You know, and did guys miss some blocks here and there?
- 2:56You know, don't forget it's the first game where everybody
- 2:58played for four you know, or quarters. I don't put
- 3:01a lot of stock in first games as far as
- 3:04what the whole season is going to be, you know,
- 3:06I mean, obviously you'd rather win. Look, the Eagles probably
- 3:10not probably didn't play their best game, probably on either
- 3:13side of the ball, and they won the Chiefs they lost.
- 3:17You know, you know these things. It's week one. You know,
- 3:21we're not going to make definitive comments about the whole season.
- 3:24I actually thought that I don't think Cam Jurgens played
- 3:27very well at all in this game. By the way,
- 3:29I thought Tyler Steen did play well. I thought Lane
- 3:32Johnson had some bad snaps, which were very surprising. My
- 3:35Alta had a few bad snaps. You know, I would
- 3:41never be comfortable sitting here now saying Cam Jurgens is
- 3:44gonna have a bad year, Lane Johnson is gonna have
- 3:46a bad year. Jordan my Aleot is going to have
- 3:48a bad year. I'm not you know, any would you
- 3:51be comfortable saying that game. They're also human beings, Eagles.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I remember all of us having a breakdown show after
- 3:59the Eagles struggle to beat the Patriots two years ago
- 4:01in the season opener, and the Patriots only won like
- 4:04three games that year. They really well, So.
- 4:06Speaker 2: I mean, you know, I don't really think we want
- 4:08to make these definitive judgments about the whole season. It
- 4:11was not the best game and they won, and that's
- 4:14when it's week one like that, you know, don't forget
- 4:18when you see them now play a whole game. It's
- 4:21that's so I don't think people realize how different that is,
- 4:24you know, from playing you know, from practice number one
- 4:28and then playing you know, twelve snaps and you know
- 4:32when some guys didn't even play. I mean, you know,
- 4:34so it's just a totally different deal.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yeah. So there is one one question I have for
- 4:39you that we talked about on Inside the Birds that
- 4:42I do think it's a conversation worth having about just
- 4:46beyond well it's week one. It's that the Eagles were
- 4:49a very successful running team out of eleven personnel last
- 4:52year and Johnny Wilson was was helpful in that because
- 4:55he was a big, blocking wide receiver and teams would
- 4:58play nickel against it. And then now you've lose was
- 5:00Ben van sumer In on your first site opening kick, Oh,
- 5:04you lose two kind of underrated or parts of your
- 5:07running game. And I wonder what kind of long term
- 5:10impact that might have on the Eagles, who if they
- 5:13want to run out of twelve personnel, it becomes difficult
- 5:15because I don't think grank kal Kata they don't Adam
- 5:18Man talk. They don't really have a good why tight
- 5:21end outside of Dallas Goddard.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Who I would agree with that in kal Katara, first
- 5:24of all, kal Katara going back to his days at
- 5:27Oklahoma when he was a big time receiver and then
- 5:30finishing up I believe it Smu it was? Was it not? Smu? Yes? Yes,
- 5:34I mean he's he's a receiver. You know that that
- 5:36was his game. You know they played twenty one plays
- 5:38in twelve personnel. He had there were three or four
- 5:42plays where he had major issues in run blocking. So
- 5:45they don't have to figure you know, y'all try to
- 5:47figure that out. I mean, maybe they'll go to more
- 5:49eleven personnel. You know, they had thirty plays in this game.
- 5:53You know that that's something they'll try to figure out.
- 5:55They obviously played this game asking kal Katara to be
- 5:59a blocker in run game, you know where he had
- 6:01a block defensive ends at times, and you know he
- 6:05didn't do very well. So but I I don't, you know,
- 6:09I don't want to say, gee, they were they were
- 6:11trying to see what would happen, because you don't try
- 6:13to see what would happen with the idea that, hey,
- 6:15if we lose, that's okay. But I mean I think
- 6:17they're they're trying to figure out the best way they
- 6:20can play on offense, you know, right now, because every
- 6:23year is different. You know, it's always easy to say, well,
- 6:25just stick to the formula, and you want to do
- 6:27that to a certain extent because you're really good at it.
- 6:30But on the other hand, you do have to make
- 6:32some tweaks and adjustments because defenses are going to make
- 6:35some tweaks and adjustments. Now, some people might look at
- 6:38this game, which obviously was not, you know, a great
- 6:41looking game to watch, and think that, oh, the Eagles
- 6:44can't play this way if they expect to get back
- 6:46to the super Bowl. I mean, we all hear social media,
- 6:49you know, all the all the bs, and I've already
- 6:51heard people say, well, this game just already proves it
- 6:53to me the Eagles aren't going back to the super Bowl,
- 6:55you know, I mean, because it wasn't pretty, it didn't
- 6:58look great, you know.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I actually, you're not being facetious. I actually did see
- 7:04a analyst with a name tweet that, and I.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Was now several people tweet, you know, talk about that.
- 7:10You know, and and but you know, in many ways,
- 7:14this was sort of how they played a year ago.
- 7:16So the question we all we asked the same question,
- 7:18by the way, all last season and they ended up
- 7:20winning a Super Bowl. We kept saying, well, can they
- 7:23can they play this way? If Jalen Hurts only throws
- 7:25for one hundred and seventy yards? You know, and you
- 7:27know what, they They played that way all the way
- 7:29to winning a super Bowl. You know, and and we'll see,
- 7:33you know, they probably know that they'd like to get
- 7:35more out of their passing game. You know, a J.
- 7:39Brown is not gonna have one target every week. And
- 7:41my guess is that as as Adam and I were
- 7:44discussing earlier, that he'll probably get a few more targets
- 7:48against the thieves, and he's probably made that known. But
- 7:54but you know, that's you know, they're not really a
- 7:57true passing team in a strict.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Sense, not like twenty twenty two when they were a
- 8:02passing team. There you got Barkley, your your your foundations,
- 8:05the running again and then the Hurts you know that too.
- 8:09Speaker 2: The Hurts factor in the screen. I mean, in this game,
- 8:11how many scrambles did he have that were so critical?
- 8:14Speaker 3: I gotta tell you greg On that I have not
- 8:17seen he's picked up this juke move. He looks more
- 8:20explosive running the football. I thought he looked damn good
- 8:23on the ground, really, you know.
- 8:24Speaker 2: And there's such a good sustaining team now. I mean,
- 8:27you know when he drops back and hits a six
- 8:30yard seven yard play, you know that's a really important
- 8:33play for the Eagles because of what they do on
- 8:36third down, what they do on fourth down when necessary.
- 8:39I mean, this is how they play. Yeah, you know,
- 8:42I mean, yeah, are there going to be big plays
- 8:44in the past game. Of course, there will be you
- 8:46orcas in here and say there's never going to be
- 8:48a big play. But that that's they're not really, that's
- 8:53not who they are in a strict sense. They don't
- 8:54come out to say, let's toss it all over the yard. Yeah,
- 8:57having said that, might there be a game or two,
- 8:59depending on opponent, where they think that's the best way
- 9:01to play. Of course, there'll be a game like that.
- 9:03It's the NFL. But you know that's not their foundation.
- 9:08That's you know that they're they're not just you know,
- 9:10they're not going to just come out and toss it
- 9:11all over the yard. Yep, Greig.
- 9:13Speaker 1: One thing that I thought was happening in the first
- 9:15half that was maybe a little bit more of a
- 9:17Dallas breakdown than anything was. I felt that their rush
- 9:21lanes were I don't want to say reckless, but not
- 9:25not ideal for keeping Jalen Hurts inside. Yeah, and then
- 9:29in the second half, I feel like they've made an
- 9:31adjustment there with a little pressure and then just more
- 9:34pocket attainment.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Is that something that you know, it's funny you say
- 9:37that because I came away and and maybe it was
- 9:40the last play that wrapped up the game, you know,
- 9:43where he ran for a first down. But it just
- 9:48too often again, and I hate to make these comments
- 9:50because I'm certainly not in the Cowboys meetings. I don't
- 9:53know what Matt Eberfluss was, you know, was preaching all
- 9:56week and what they practiced all week. So this is
- 9:59you know you you guys know me well enough to
- 10:01know I don't rip coaches. All I'm saying is watching
- 10:03the tape too often, it appeared as if there wasn't
- 10:07a plan for Hurts scrambling. That's that's what the tape
- 10:11told me. Now, guys could have not executed what they
- 10:14were taught. I don't know that it just the way
- 10:17it played out. It didn't seem like there was a plan.
- 10:20It just seemed like he had too much freedom, you know, scrambling.
- 10:26You know. Didn't you guys feel the same way watching it?
- 10:29Speaker 1: I couldn't believe it.
- 10:29Speaker 3: How I'm like, where because Jeff you pointed this out
- 10:32when we were talking. Did you know the guys are
- 10:35getting too far afield?
- 10:36Speaker 1: Yeah? Well, I thought I thought it was when a
- 10:39guy goes up field, or when he makes an inside
- 10:41move on an offensive tackle and then leaves the outside
- 10:46exposed like that, that usually is a red carpet for
- 10:49Jalen hurts to run and would say, you know, God,
- 10:55I'm sorry, Greg.
- 10:57Speaker 2: No, I was gonna say it. I've hurt seen space.
- 10:58He's gonna run, you know. But I thought, But I
- 11:01also thought there were some guys on the Dallas defensive
- 11:03line that flashed throughout the game. And I thought that
- 11:06they actually played well in the run game and at
- 11:09times rushing hurts, you know, again because we don't know
- 11:12what they were told to do. I thought Sam Williams
- 11:14flashed a lot in this game. I thought both Neiland
- 11:18and Azaruku showed up as well, but you know, it
- 11:23just there were too many times. And it's always easy
- 11:27to say because Hurts is very good at this. Hurts
- 11:29has a tremendous you know. The thing about Hurts is
- 11:33he clearly has an innate feel for the way the
- 11:36game flows. He doesn't turn it over. He doesn't make throws.
- 11:40Wigl what's he doing with that throw? You know, he
- 11:42doesn't do that. Now. He may not hit a lot
- 11:45of plays that you know, you think, okay, that might
- 11:47be there. Maybe you know, maybe Matthew Stafford throws that,
- 11:50but you know, at the end of the day, it
- 11:52fits their team. He plays in a team sport. He
- 11:56plays sort of the quintessential team ball, and the numbers
- 12:01are probably not going to be there. He's not gonna
- 12:03throw for forty three hundred yards. He's probably not going
- 12:05to throw thirty five touchdowns, you know, but he plays
- 12:09team ball. That's his game, and it.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Goes through Barkley. That's that's the thing. You're not gonna
- 12:14be throwing the ball a lot when it goes through
- 12:16the run. Game goes through your quarterback as used to
- 12:18be a running back, and your quarterback back right right.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Interesting, Hey, you know that one guy in the group
- 12:23chat who hit a five leg parlay a week one
- 12:26and he wouldn't shut up about it for the rest
- 12:28of the season.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Sounds like Kaplan, right, yeah, yeah, it.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Could be him, It could be you, and we would
- 12:35all want to be you.
- 12:37Speaker 1: My bookie makes it stupid easy to.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Get in on the action, whether it's college ball, NFL
- 12:43Super Contest and Survivor pools. All the spreads, player props
- 12:48and in game lines that you could want, all under
- 12:51one roof.
- 12:53Speaker 1: What more could you want than that?
- 12:55Speaker 4: If you're new to my bookie, use our code the
- 13:00Birds th G b I r DS The Birds use
- 13:04the code, and any bet you choose up to five
- 13:08hundred dollars is fully covered. Make your play and if
- 13:12it doesn't hit, you get it right back when you
- 13:14opt in using your bet back bonus token. There is
- 13:18no better time to jump in right now. No better
- 13:22place to play football is back. Let's make some money
- 13:26with my bookie.
- 13:27Speaker 1: All right? One last thing on Kevin with Kevin Patulo,
- 13:31because he's offensive coordinator, this is his debut. What do
- 13:33you think of the first fifteen.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Well, I wasn't studying that in particular, but here's what
- 13:39I will say, and I'm curious, and again just watching tape,
- 13:42this is no knock on Petullo. It's game one. But
- 13:45I didn't think there were a lot of clean, defined
- 13:47looks for Jalen in this game. Now, again, I'm not
- 13:50gonna sit here and say the rock concepts and combinations
- 13:52were bad. You know, I would never do that. But
- 13:56you know, I didn't think that there were a lot
- 13:59you know, when you when he did drop back to pass,
- 14:01that was a true drop back type passing situation. I
- 14:04didn't think there are a lot of defined, clean looks
- 14:06for him to deliver the ball. And for the most part,
- 14:09for the most part, he's not a guy that is
- 14:11going to you know, throw it into really tight, tight windows.
- 14:14You know, that's not his game. And that's okay. You know,
- 14:17he has other strengths in his game. But uh yeah,
- 14:21well so we'll see, you know, don't forget. It's also
- 14:24Kevin Patullo's first game as an OC where it's a
- 14:27four quarter game. It's a whole different animal. You're not
- 14:31just calling individual plays now, You're you're dealing with an
- 14:34entire game, right, you know, So again he has to
- 14:38grow too. You know, he's a pretty young guy. He's
- 14:41not an old guy. He hasn't been doing this for
- 14:42thirty years.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Right, yeah, all right, Greg, last episode, when we talked
- 14:47about the defense, we asked you to give us your
- 14:49evaluation of Zadarius Smith, who had just signed by the Eagles.
- 14:53And now we have to ask you about another guy
- 14:55who's coming. Who's come to the Eagles, and he's a
- 14:57running back, Tank big Speed, who has been a quiet
- 15:00in a trade with the Jaguars.
- 15:02Speaker 2: So wow, I didn't even when did that happen?
- 15:05Speaker 1: A little bit here?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Happened Monday night?
- 15:07Speaker 1: Yeah, happened Monday night. And uh yeah, so Bigsby? What
- 15:11what when you think of Tank Bigsby in the Jaguars offense?
- 15:14Speaker 2: Uh?
- 15:15Speaker 1: What did he bring to it?
- 15:16Speaker 2: Wow? I've always been a really big Tanks big b fan,
- 15:20going back to his tape in college. So I mean
- 15:25he's stylistically, you know, no one is truly Barkley, but
- 15:31stylistically he's he's more like that. So now I guess
- 15:36that raises the question, you know, is anybody gonna miss
- 15:40like a lot of time here? Well?
- 15:41Speaker 3: Yeah, has a rib injury and he he only played
- 15:44six players, so this is obviously part of this that
- 15:46that's that's obviously.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Does that mean Corey Dillon's not long for this team?
- 15:51Speaker 4: A J.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Dillon aj Dyllan. Well, no, but again we don't know
- 15:55exactly what Shipley has. But if Shipley has broken ribs,
- 15:59it's going as time. Yeah, we'll find out later this week,
- 16:02you know exactly what it is. But wow, Yeah, Big
- 16:05Bigsby is a guy. At one point, I know, talking
- 16:08the Jaguars, they thought he might well, he might not
- 16:11take Etn's job.
- 16:12Speaker 1: This is a couple of years ago.
- 16:14Speaker 3: They liked a lot of the things you were talking about,
- 16:16and then he just couldnot play consistently good football. But
- 16:18there's talent there.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Yeah, this is yeah, I mean he's he's I remember
- 16:23too when I did him at Auburn and looked at
- 16:25his background. He was a huge recruit. It was a
- 16:27big get for Auburn. I gotta tell you, I I
- 16:32really like Yeah, you know, I'm sure they didn't give
- 16:34up much right.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Oh yeah, just a couple of draft picks fifth and six.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I really like Big b as a runner.
- 16:40I mean, you know, again we know that that Barkley
- 16:43is the feature back. You know, again, I don't know
- 16:46what their thought process is with Barkley in terms of
- 16:48giving him you know, I don't want to rest is
- 16:51not the right word, but giving him a blow as
- 16:53it were, you know, because no matter how strong a
- 16:56guy is, to carry as often as he did a
- 16:58year ago and really be that guy for multiple seasons
- 17:02is hard. Yeah, I mean, you know, I guess some
- 17:05guys can do it. You know, Derrick Henry, he's a freak.
- 17:07You know, Barkley to a certain extent is But I
- 17:10don't know, you know, I don't know what the thought
- 17:12process is. But I like the player. I like the
- 17:14way he runs.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Well, we'll definitely get into it on the inside the
- 17:16Birds pregame show when we drop that before the Chiefs game,
- 17:20just about you know, the role. When we have a
- 17:22little more clarity on the role that he's going to play.
- 17:25Let us break down some tape. I want to go
- 17:28back to Jalen Hurts and some of his well, let's
- 17:31go to his you know signature plays. Is one deep ball.
- 17:34He's good for at least one of these per game
- 17:36to Johan Dotson fifty one yarder. And I'll set the
- 17:42stage here, Greg, it is now loaded up. What strikes
- 17:44you just about the alignment and the defense that they're
- 17:47looking at and hurts his mentality here.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Well, I mean this was a third and six, by
- 17:53the way, when normally on third and six they don't
- 17:55throw these kinds of balls.
- 17:57Speaker 1: It's funny I ask that of of of the why
- 18:02can I think of John Dotson in the locker room?
- 18:03I said, you know a lot of quarterbacks wouldn't do
- 18:05that on third and six. He goes, I know, but
- 18:07he he trusts that ball.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Well, it's the right read because they're playing quarters. So
- 18:12it became the right read because he got Davonte Smith
- 18:14in the slot and you have Johan Dotson outside. So
- 18:17when Smith vertical releases from number two, the safety has
- 18:21to react to him because it's quarters. So quarters, you know,
- 18:25is man with rules. So once once Smith starts running vertically,
- 18:29the safety and is that Hooker perhaps I believe it is, yes, yeah,
- 18:33so he so Hooker basically has to match him right now,
- 18:35and you can tell by Hooker the way his body
- 18:38position in body language is that he's matching Devonte Smith.
- 18:42So now what you have and you have an outside
- 18:45leverage corner in kir Elim down below with Dotson going
- 18:50to the post and no safety help over the top,
- 18:53so it hurts made absolutely the right read, you know,
- 18:57because there's no Now it's just Dotson running running to
- 18:59the with an outside leverage corner and nobody over the
- 19:03top of it.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Now when he releases the ball, look look at Dotson.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Well, I think one of the great things here too
- 19:09that has to be pointed out is dots and if
- 19:12you can you go back a little, Jeff. Sure, Look
- 19:16how he literally steps on his toe. You go, yep,
- 19:19going one more frame, literally keep going right there. I mean,
- 19:25so you know that that's just terrific route running right there,
- 19:30because now Elon thinks he's going straight on a go
- 19:33route and now he just creates enough separation because with
- 19:38Hooker having to run with Smith, which you can see
- 19:41because he matched him, Jalen can throw this ball across
- 19:45the field on these deep posts. You're not throwing the
- 19:47ball straight. You don't want the guy to catch it
- 19:49like over the top like this, you want the guy
- 19:52to catch it, you know, running to space, running to air,
- 19:56and that you see, that's where he places it. This
- 19:58is you couldn't have handed it to him any better.
- 20:00This is a great great well, well, you see how
- 20:02he catches it. Yeah, going this way, not this way.
- 20:05That was phenomenal. Yah, that's phenomenal.
- 20:07Speaker 1: By the way, I mean, it's not like this was
- 20:09bad coverage by Elam he got he's half a step.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Down, so it's really it's very difficult for him to
- 20:16do anything about it other then hopefully maybe get a
- 20:19hand in. But the ball is so well thrown.
- 20:22Speaker 3: You know, I was wondering all game are they going
- 20:24to go after Elim because that was the guy that
- 20:26quite frankly, we wondered would he fit this scheme with
- 20:28ebra Flus And we'll have to see.
- 20:31Speaker 1: By the way, Greg just made a great point. If
- 20:32this ball is thrown a little bit differently so that
- 20:35it's not out in front but over the shoulder, he
- 20:37might get tackled at the thirty six. It's still first down.
- 20:40But look at how he's able to momentum get some
- 20:42extra what five six seven yards here.
- 20:45Speaker 2: He's got beautifully thrown ball. It was really it was
- 20:49a great throw. Yeah, No, I mean basically read the coverage.
- 20:53I mean, you know, if let's say Hooker, if it
- 20:56was a different coverage, that might not have been the.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Throw right right, all right, I want to go through
- 21:01one of the Hurst touchdown runs, the four yard touchdown
- 21:04run on third and four. I believe here and this
- 21:09is in the What quarter was that?
- 21:10Speaker 2: Was that?
- 21:10Speaker 1: The first quarter? I believe right, this was.
- 21:13Speaker 2: The first touchdown run. If you're taken, yes, I.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Believe you're right. So how is this It's gonna be
- 21:18a run. He's gonna kind of pop it around right
- 21:20right edge here. I wonder sometimes Greg, I wonder, if
- 21:25you know, we talk about sometimes there are throws there
- 21:27that doesn't make or doesn't say. But sometimes I just
- 21:29wonder if he just knows that the defense is gonna
- 21:32give him the the green, so he just takes it
- 21:35instead of throwing what my people.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Will see Fowler, who is the defensive end to the
- 21:40top of the screen here, Yep, he rushes inside Elane Johnson.
- 21:44So again, I can't believe Fowler was taught to do this.
- 21:47You know, I don't know why he did it. But
- 21:49as soon as he does that, the edge just oh,
- 21:51you know, yeah right there. As soon as he does that,
- 21:56because this is not this is not Jalen looking to run.
- 21:59There's no throw here. You know, he's looking to his left.
- 22:02He doesn't have a throw.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Where do you think the design of this is supposed
- 22:07to go.
- 22:08Speaker 2: I think the design is for Smith up top.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Oh okay, maybe I.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Think this throw is designed for Smith and it's undercut
- 22:16by whoever that is, right, I think it's blanned, got it. Yeah,
- 22:20it's planned because he moved inside in their nickel when
- 22:22when Diggs came in, So this throw is designed for Smith.
- 22:26On the outcut, they're expecting man here and and you
- 22:29know he doesn't have it. So then he came back left,
- 22:32you know, for for to go through the read and
- 22:34nothing is clearly defined. And then as soon and this
- 22:37is where Herts just feels stuff. As soon as he
- 22:39felt that Fowler was inside the whole, the whole right
- 22:42side opens up. Yeah.
- 22:44Speaker 1: And from then it's just off the races. Nice block
- 22:47lead block here by the way by DeVante's Johan Dotson.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Yeah, so I mean that's what happened. But yeah, that
- 22:54play was designed for DeVonta Smith.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Right. But this is what I talking about before I
- 22:59was I was I didn't want to use the word reckless,
- 23:01but I was sort of surprised that a veteran like
- 23:03Fowler would put an inside move here and leave the outside.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Especially when they're matching up on that side. There's no
- 23:11defender sitting there right right right, so by the way
- 23:15on the Barkley touchdown run. And I don't know if
- 23:17you have it, but DeVante Smith made a great block,
- 23:20and I think that's worth you know, acknowledging, even if
- 23:23you don't have it. He made a great block. And
- 23:26and you know you don't think of him as that guy,
- 23:28but you know that that's when it's just a bad effort.
- 23:31You know, you don't have to be you know, two
- 23:33hundred and fifty pounds, and you know that that just
- 23:35gets down to effort and you don't have to pancake
- 23:37a guy.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Definitely. Here's the other Hurts touchdown run. This one was
- 23:42the ten yarder and I thought similarly that there was
- 23:45an abandonment of contector. Now where where do you see
- 23:49what's the read here in the idea? Because there's a
- 23:51rubb I think that's the one. There's a pick on
- 23:52the left.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Well, this this is this is empty if I'm right,
- 23:57if memory serves me correctly, they had a two man
- 24:01route concept into the boundary and a three man route
- 24:03combination to the field. I think his initial read was
- 24:07to the boundary. If I'm not mistaken.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Let's see, I thought it was kind of a smash
- 24:13to aj Brown, but it was it was sort of
- 24:15against his zone, so there wasn't there wasn't as a
- 24:18definitive throw there.
- 24:20Speaker 2: But he's looking to his right to the two man concept.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yeah he was. You're right, he was looking to the
- 24:24right the whole time. But you know, I mean, I
- 24:30guess he's he might have been able to throw to
- 24:31the corner, but it looks well defended to me.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Now again, that's what you want if you're Dallas. So
- 24:37that's why why do you want this?
- 24:39Speaker 2: I mean, I think again, I don't know if Barkley
- 24:41made a mistake or not, but you know, if you're
- 24:44if you you ideally want to eat up Digs here
- 24:48because you're counting on uh is that cal Katara?
- 24:54Speaker 1: I think that's it.
- 24:57Speaker 2: You're counting on cal Kutara because he has leverage to
- 24:59be able to win too the outside, which he kind
- 25:02of does. Okay, So but the guy you have to
- 25:05beat is Digs, not the not the safety. So again
- 25:09I'm not sitting here. I don't know how they teach this,
- 25:11but you ultimately want Digs to have to react to
- 25:14Barkley so that he can't sink and be a factor
- 25:18on the throw. That's what you're hoping happens right now.
- 25:21It's easy to sit here and say, gee, should have
- 25:23looked to the other side. Well, that's always easy to say,
- 25:26but we don't know how they teach it. Now. I'm
- 25:28not going to sit here and say that he made
- 25:30a mistake. I don't know that, right.
- 25:32Speaker 1: But so here's where I question it again. You're Dallas,
- 25:35you get what you want on the back end. Defensively,
- 25:37Hurts doesn't want to go anywhere with the ball. But
- 25:40the guy who's lined up here across left tackle, Jordan Milotta,
- 25:44tries an inside spin.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Now that's what happened.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yeh yeah, and then bam off to the races again.
- 25:53So that might have been yeah, yeah, yeah, young kid.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Now what you had there is where a lot of
- 26:00teams play when they play two shell coverage, guys, is
- 26:03you get three over two to the boundary and you
- 26:05get four over three to the field. That's that's what
- 26:08zone coverage often becomes three over two, four over three.
- 26:12So whatever side you know, I don't know how they
- 26:14teach it. Is it pick a side? Is it? We
- 26:16want to work to the boundary. I don't know that,
- 26:20but I mean the numbers don't necessarily favor you, so
- 26:23you know you're hoping that that the routes, you know,
- 26:26cause conflict, right. You know, that's why I mentioned Barkley.
- 26:30And again I don't know if he did anything wrong,
- 26:32but you know Diggs is not really controlled.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Here, correct.
- 26:36Speaker 2: Yeah, it's easy now to look up top and say, oh, gee,
- 26:39DeVante Smith is wide open running, but you know that's
- 26:43one of the rules, right, Yeah, that's easy to say
- 26:45after the fact.
- 26:47Speaker 1: And Adam great point. I you know, there have been
- 26:49a couple of times where when Hurts is run, he's
- 26:51he's run, but he's not looked as explosive in years
- 26:53back this. I mean, he really had to beat the
- 26:56linebacker all the way to the place. It's not like
- 26:58he was the path was once he got outside, which
- 27:02is right around now. But there's a lot to beat
- 27:05that linebacker who was way closer than he was.
- 27:08Speaker 2: His juke move.
- 27:10Speaker 3: He takes that one right step and then turns back in.
- 27:12Speaker 2: You cannot discount Hurts running all over the field, but
- 27:16certainly in the red zone. I mean, this is a
- 27:18big part of their offense. It's a significant part. Obviously,
- 27:22you're not coaching it. Although I'm pretty certain that with
- 27:25quarterbacks that are like Jalen Hurts, that have this kind
- 27:28of running ability, that they probably don't get upset if
- 27:32they think maybe he missed the throw. He didn't there
- 27:35by the way that he missed the throw and he
- 27:37runs and good results happened. I mean, this is a
- 27:40major part of his game, and defenses have to try
- 27:43to deal with this. I mean, this is a big deal.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Yeah, well, we'll see on Sunday against Kansas City if
- 27:50they take a little bit of a different tack on
- 27:51how they want to rush him from the edges, because
- 27:54they've got a lot of experience that as well.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Well, it's funny you say that because the same thing
- 27:58happened on Herbert's you know, winning run of nineteen yards
- 28:02when Chris Jones went inside on his pass rush and
- 28:06you know, and Chris Jones is a great player and
- 28:09maybe a Hall of Famer, but on that particular play,
- 28:11he made a mistake.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Yep, yep. Jalen Hurts can make people make mistakes. It happens,
- 28:16all right, Great stuff awesome. That is the full breakdown
- 28:20in two parts, he did what we did offense. We
- 28:21did defense for Greg Cosel and Adam Kaplan. I'm Jeff Mosher.
- 28:25We'll catch you all next week on the next edition
- 28:28of Inside the Tape. On Inside the Bird,
