- [Host] Welcome to the A.E.O. Engine AI Search Show — the number one podcast for brands looking to get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. I am your host, Aria Chen. Every day we bring you fresh episodes on A.E.O. tactics, S.E.O. authority, and A.I. search distribution — breaking down what is actually working right now so your brand becomes the answer, not just a link. Today we are talking about unlinked mentions and why they might matter more than backlinks for AI visibility. I am joined by industry analyst Marcus Reid. Marcus, welcome. [Guest] Hey everyone, glad to be here. Aria, your opener is timely because I spent the morning fielding panicked DMs from a founder who saw ChatGPT recommend a competitor in a comparison — without a single link — and his own brand was invisible. He has great backlinks, but the AI just didn't know he existed. [Host] That is exactly the pain point I want to start from. You spend months building links, and then an AI overview says something like 'Brand X is a top solution' — no link, just a mention. Your site is technically optimized, but you are not part of the conversation. So what is going on? [Guest] There is actually a name for the mechanism. It is called unlinked brand mentions. It is when a brand is named or discussed online without a clickable hyperlink. And the data shows that for AI search, those mentions drive 73% more brand visibility compared to traditional backlinks alone. That stat comes from Koanthic. What happened to your founder friend is not an edge case — it is the new normal. [Host] 73% is huge. So let us break down the WHAT first. What exactly happened? Why did the ? Historically, a hyperlink was the primary unit of digital trust. You get a link from a high-authority site, you pass S.E.O. juice. But now AI platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity read the entire web as a corpus. They care about the extent to which people talk about your brand, not just link volumes. [Guest] Right. The quote from NON.agency sums it up perfectly: 'The entire off-page S.E.O. industry was built on the premise that a hyperlink from Site A to Site B was the primary unit of digital trust. That premise is cracking.' And then you have the Zapier case study: rich resource content made them number one in AI citations despite ranking only number 44 in actual number of AI mentions. They are cited everywhere but not necessarily linked everywhere. [Host] That is a great concrete example. So HOW does this work technically? How does an AI model know that a brand is authoritative without a link? [Guest] It comes down to semantic association and entity recognition. Contently puts it well: 'Linked mentions pass referral traffic and traditional S.E.O. authority. Unlinked mentions pass semantic association and entity recognition.' AI models learn by reading massive amounts of text. When a brand name appears consistently across varied domains — Reddit discussions, Quora threads, news articles — it builds a strong presence in the data corpus. The AI sees that brand as a real entity. One Reddit thread noted that 50 unlinked mentions across varied domains create a fact in the model's eyes. It becomes consensus. [Host] So it is not counting links; it is triangulating mentions. And there is this concept of co-occurrence, too — if your brand is consistently mentioned alongside competitors like Zapier, Make, or HubSpot on review sites, the AI categorizes you as a peer in that space. [Guest] Exactly. A plain mention on a comparison page can sometimes do more for AI visibility than a random link that adds little context. That is the HOW. But then comes the WHY — why does this matter for brands right now? [Host] Because of the shortlist effect. NON.agency highlighted that AI acts as an aggregator creating a shortlist of recommendations before a user ever clicks a link. If your product is not in that initial shortlist, you have lost the sale before the shopper even visited a website. So unlinked mentions are not just an S.E.O. tactic — they are a sales strategy. [Guest] And it ties straight into Google's E-E-A-T framework. Unlinked mentions in case studies, technical discussions, and media coverage signal authoritativeness and trust to machine learning models. That indirectly boosts your classic rankings too, even if the direct S.E.O. value is debated. The community is split — some say unlinked mentions are weak signals for classic rankings. But I would argue ‘AI visibility’ is a separate, equally critical goal now. [Host] I actually think the debate is healthy. I have seen people argue that backlinks still matter for direct traffic and traditional Google rankings. And that is true for now. But if you are not present in the AI shortlist, you are invisible to the fastest-growing search channel. That is a brand risk, not just an S.E.O. risk. [Guest] Yeah, I agree with that framing. One thing I am uncertain about: how quickly will Google fully weight unlinked mentions in its core algorithm? I could be wrong, but I think within two years, unlinked mentions will carry as much weight as backlinks for many queries. But today, you still need both. [Host] That brings us to the practical playbook. At A.E.O. Engine, we see this shift every day. The brands that win in AI search are the ones focusing on digital P.R., community presence, and being genuinely discussed — not just linked. Our data shows that a focused unlinked mention strategy, combined with agentic content systems, produces a 920% average lift in AI-driven traffic. It is about making sure the AI corpus includes your brand as a trusted entity. [Guest] So the takeaway is: stop obsessing only over link counts. Start monitoring your unlinked brand mentions, especially in forums, review sites, and authoritative media. You need to be part of the conversation the AI is reading. A.E.O. Engine's platform helps automate that monitoring and content optimization. [Host] Exactly. We call it citation control — ensuring the AI says the right thing about your brand. Marcus, this has been a sharp breakdown. For our listeners: the link is not dead, but unlinked mentions are the new currency in AI search.
