- 0:06Speaker 1: You're listening to a special edition of That Kevin Show,
- 0:10Speaker 1: September 11th, 25 years later. I'm Kevin McCullough.
- 0:19Speaker 2: You say you'll never forget where you were when you
- 0:22Speaker 2: heard the news on September 11th, 2001. Neither will I.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I was on the 110th floor in a smoke-filled room
- 0:37Speaker 2: with a man who called his wife to say goodbye.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I held his fingers steady as he dialed. I gave
- 0:49Speaker 2: him the piece to say, Honey, I'm not going to
- 0:53Speaker 2: make it.
- 0:56Speaker 3: But it's okay.
- 0:56Speaker 4: I'm ready to go.
- 0:57Speaker 3: I'm ready to go.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I was with his wife when he called as she
- 1:03Speaker 2: fed breakfast to their children. I held her up as
- 1:07Speaker 2: she tried to understand his words. And as she realized
- 1:12Speaker 2: he wasn't coming home that night. I was in the
- 1:18Speaker 2: stairwell of the 23rd floor when a woman cried out
- 1:21Speaker 2: to me for help. I've been knocking on the door
- 1:26Speaker 2: of your heart for 50 years. I said, of course
- 1:30Speaker 2: I'll show you the way home. Only believe in me now.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I was at the base of the building when the
- 1:41Speaker 2: priest ministered to the injured and devastated souls. I took
- 1:46Speaker 2: him home to tend his flock in heaven. He heard
- 1:51Speaker 2: my voice and answered. I was on all four of
- 1:59Speaker 2: those planes in every seat with every prayer. I was
- 2:07Speaker 2: with the crew as they were overtaken. I was in
- 2:11Speaker 2: the very hearts of the believers there comforting and assuring
- 2:16Speaker 2: them that their faith has saved them. I was in
- 2:20Speaker 2: Texas Kansas London I was standing next to you when
- 2:28Speaker 2: you heard the terrible news did you sense me? I
- 2:35Speaker 2: want you to know that I saw every face I
- 2:40Speaker 2: knew every name though not all know me some met
- 2:48Speaker 2: me for the first time on the 86th floor some
- 2:55Speaker 2: sought me with their last breath Some couldn't hear me
- 3:02Speaker 2: calling to them through the smoke and flames. Come to me.
- 3:07Speaker 2: This way.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Take my hand.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Some chose, for the final time, to ignore me.
- 3:21Speaker 3: But I was there.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I did not place you in the tower that day.
- 3:30Speaker 2: You may not know why, but I do. However, if
- 3:38Speaker 2: you were there in that explosive moment in time, would
- 3:44Speaker 2: you have reached for me?
- 3:45Speaker 5: September 11th, 2001 was not the end of the journey
- 3:47Speaker 5: for you.
- 3:58Speaker 2: But someday your journey will end and I'll be there
- 4:01Speaker 2: for you as well. Seek me now while I may
- 4:09Speaker 2: be found. Then, at any moment, you know you're ready
- 4:15Speaker 2: to go. I will be in the stairwell of your
- 4:21Speaker 2: final moments.
- 4:28Speaker 3: Remember, I love you.
- 4:39Speaker 1: One of the things I have worried about as the
- 4:42Speaker 1: last 25 years have come and gone is just how
- 4:46Speaker 1: quickly our nation might forget about what happened on this
- 4:50Speaker 1: day a quarter of a century ago. I forget about it.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Not completely. You can't if you lived through it. But
- 5:00Speaker 1: most of the year I don't think about September 11.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And then September comes. And there it is. The second plane.
- 5:10Speaker 1: I remember watching it hit. Not the replay, not the
- 5:15Speaker 1: multitude of replays, but the actual moment that it happened.
- 5:22Speaker 1: The first plane had left rooms for questions. An accident?
- 5:26Speaker 1: Something going wrong? Terribly wrong? But the second plane answered them,
- 5:31Speaker 1: and we were under attack. I remember the bodies. I
- 5:38Speaker 1: hate even saying that. People falling from buildings because whatever
- 5:44Speaker 1: was behind them was worse than whatever was outside the
- 5:47Speaker 1: open window. And 25 years later, I forced myself to
- 5:54Speaker 1: watch the footage. I remember the towers coming down. I
- 5:59Speaker 1: remember staring at the television trying to understand what I
- 6:02Speaker 1: was seeing. Buildings that had been part of the New
- 6:06Speaker 1: York skyline were just gone. And I remember something else,
- 6:13Speaker 1: something most people probably don't know about my September 11th,
- 6:17Speaker 1: the day before I had just gotten my first talk show.
- 6:22Speaker 1: September 10th. So much for easing into the job. My
- 6:28Speaker 1: second day as host, terrorists attacked the United States and
- 6:31Speaker 1: I ended up being on the air for 18 hours.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I had a live microphone in front of me while
- 6:37Speaker 1: I was trying to process exactly the same thing everybody
- 6:41Speaker 1: else was listening and trying to process. But what do
- 6:45Speaker 1: you say in those moments? I genuinely didn't know. We
- 6:51Speaker 1: took calls. Some people cried. I cried. We prayed. And
- 6:58Speaker 1: underneath all of it was a question I don't think
- 7:00Speaker 1: people who weren't old enough to experience that day can
- 7:03Speaker 1: completely understand. But we asked the rest of the day,
- 7:07Speaker 1: was it over? Were there more planes, more targets, more
- 7:11Speaker 1: people waiting to attack? Nobody really knew the answer. Fighter
- 7:16Speaker 1: jets were over American cities and airports went silent. And
- 7:20Speaker 1: for weeks after A low-flying airplane could make you a
- 7:23Speaker 1: little nervous in a way it never had before. That's
- 7:29Speaker 1: difficult to explain now. Before September 11th, airplanes were just airplanes.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Then they weren't. And somewhere in those awful days, something
- 7:39Speaker 1: else happened that I haven't seen quite the same way since.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Republicans and Democrats walked out onto the steps of the
- 7:45Speaker 1: United States Capitol together and sang God Bless America. They
- 7:51Speaker 1: weren't very good. Some of them stumbled over the words,
- 7:56Speaker 1: but nobody cared about that. For a few minutes, they
- 7:59Speaker 1: weren't Republicans or Democrats. They were Americans. Churches filled up, too.
- 8:05Speaker 1: People prayed who hadn't prayed in years, and I don't
- 8:08Speaker 1: say that critically, quite the opposite. Sometimes you discover what
- 8:13Speaker 1: you believe when you've run out of everything else to
- 8:14Speaker 1: hold on to. And I remember going to my church
- 8:17Speaker 1: that night, and the place was packed. We were scared
- 8:23Speaker 1: and angry and grieving. But for a little while, we
- 8:26Speaker 1: were together. It didn't last. Of course it didn't last.
- 8:30Speaker 1: We're human. But it happened. And that's the part I
- 8:36Speaker 1: don't want to forget. We came together. 25 years later. Somehow,
- 8:50Speaker 1: we made it through that togetherness that's what September does
- 8:57Speaker 1: to me for 11 months I think I've put it
- 9:01Speaker 1: somewhere in a back pocket or in tucked away memory
- 9:07Speaker 1: and then September comes around and I realize I haven't
- 9:11Speaker 1: forgotten nearly as much as I thought I had and
- 9:14Speaker 1: today we will not forget but we will remember it's
- 9:19Speaker 1: that Kevin show.
- 9:23Speaker 6: So so.
- 9:53Speaker 5: Thank you. Here he.
- 10:09Speaker 7: Is from New York, that Kevin, Kevin McCullough.
- 10:17Speaker 1: All right, it's Friday. Kevin McCullough, glad to have you
- 10:20Speaker 1: with us. And it's exciting for a lot of reasons.
- 10:25Speaker 1: You might be looking forward to the holiday.
- 10:27Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Maybe you're thinking I've got like three days off after this.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Whatever it is, but we're glad you're with us. Glad
- 10:32Speaker 1: you chose to spend some time with us. Dave Watson
- 10:34Speaker 1: is back with us for our final discussion on this
- 10:37Speaker 1: week-long look at Lamentations 3 and kind of what we've
- 10:43Speaker 1: put in the terminology of Old Testament Israel's version of 9-11. Really,
- 10:48Speaker 1: our 9-11 was probably their equivalent of August 15th. But, Dave,
- 10:53Speaker 1: there's lots of dates that stick in our head. December 7th, 1941. 9-11, 2001.
- 11:02Speaker 1: October the 7th. You just say these dates and they
- 11:06Speaker 1: immediately bring back to people's minds the idea that life
- 11:11Speaker 1: is unpredictable. And that the world has real evil and
- 11:16Speaker 1: that there really is a source of good. And we
- 11:19Speaker 1: we need to tap into that and and latch on
- 11:22Speaker 1: to he who is that source for everything that we've got,
- 11:27Speaker 1: because that's the only the only way out is through him.
- 11:30Speaker 1: And that's that's how we want to be. So what
- 11:32Speaker 1: have we looked at this week? Kind of kind of
- 11:34Speaker 1: bring this home for us.
- 11:36Speaker 8: Thanks so much again for having me, Kevin. It's been
- 11:38Speaker 8: a privilege, especially in the week coming up to 9-11.
- 11:42Speaker 3: We have, first of all, the.
- 11:45Speaker 8: Writer, Jeremiah, experiencing a relinquishing of hope. His circumstances, seeing
- 11:52Speaker 8: the city he loved, the temple he loved, and he
- 11:55Speaker 8: was a priest himself. His dad may very well have
- 11:58Speaker 8: been the high priest. So he's watching the temple that
- 12:02Speaker 8: he loved being ransacked and burnt down.
- 12:07Speaker 3: And he, for a moment, appears to lose.
- 12:10Speaker 8: Hope and say, God, you filled me with bitterness.
- 12:15Speaker 3: And we've talked about this before.
- 12:16Speaker 8: You and I aren't going anywhere tomorrow eating wormwood if
- 12:19Speaker 8: we can avoid it. But, you know, he's talking about that.
- 12:23Speaker 8: But then he stops himself, and he makes a choice.
- 12:26Speaker 8: He makes a choice not to remember– his wanderings, not
- 12:32Speaker 8: to remember his pain, but to remember who God is.
- 12:36Speaker 3: And when he talks about who.
- 12:38Speaker 8: God is and the fact that he calls to mind
- 12:41Speaker 8: that God is one with steadfast love and that love
- 12:45Speaker 8: never ceases and that he's a God of mercy and
- 12:48Speaker 8: that mercy never fails and that it's new every morning,
- 12:52Speaker 8: great is thy faithfulness, his hope is is restored and
- 12:57Speaker 8: and and and that's the the last part of what
- 13:00Speaker 8: we talk he has confidence he is he has surety
- 13:03Speaker 8: he has a hope that is uh indeed you know
- 13:07Speaker 8: sure you know when we think of of 9-11 and
- 13:10Speaker 8: what you said is just so poignant we we say
- 13:13Speaker 8: these dates in in history and um We can get
- 13:17Speaker 8: caught up in the scar they caused. You know, on
- 13:20Speaker 8: my right hand, my index finger, I have a scar
- 13:23Speaker 8: from something that happened to me in the fifth grade.
- 13:26Speaker 3: But, you know, it's healed. And the thing to focus
- 13:30Speaker 3: on is.
- 13:30Speaker 8: Not necessarily that there is a scar, although that's a
- 13:34Speaker 8: good reminder, but that there is healing.
- 13:37Speaker 3: And we know God who brings healing.
- 13:42Speaker 8: Deep pain even 25 years later I will go to
- 13:46Speaker 8: the 9-11 memorial and it's it's it's painful it's painful
- 13:53Speaker 8: it's painful and but there is a God who brings
- 13:56Speaker 8: healing who fills the hole that is.
- 13:58Speaker 1: In our heart well in our our prayer is that
- 14:02Speaker 1: we are able to capture what Jeremiah is talking here
- 14:05Speaker 1: and for many more things than just the memory of
- 14:11Speaker 1: this one painful day. We have pain all the time.
- 14:13Speaker 1: There's things that we walk through. There's things that someone's
- 14:16Speaker 1: walking through right now that is every bit as cataclysmic
- 14:19Speaker 1: as 9-11 was to those who lost loved ones that
- 14:22Speaker 1: day now. And we don't know anything about this person
- 14:25Speaker 1: or what they're dealing with, but they are looking for
- 14:28Speaker 1: that hope. They are looking, they're in desperation maybe of
- 14:33Speaker 1: The idea that maybe that hope doesn't exist and they
- 14:35Speaker 1: need they need those of us who know him to
- 14:38Speaker 1: be living this out so that so that we can
- 14:40Speaker 1: be the living witness that that brings them there.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Absolutely. Absolutely. And I think what you're saying is just
- 14:45Speaker 3: so true. And not to trivialize trivialize 9-11 in any way,
- 14:50Speaker 3: shape or form.
- 14:51Speaker 8: But for many people, you know, they have experiences that
- 14:55Speaker 8: that to them. is, you know, it's catastrophic. And where
- 15:00Speaker 8: do you find hope in that? Where do you turn
- 15:02Speaker 8: in that? You know, we've taught people to look to science.
- 15:06Speaker 8: We've taught people to look to politicians and political solutions.
- 15:11Speaker 8: We've taught people to even, you know, rely on.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Friends and family. But many times all of that, all.
- 15:19Speaker 8: Of that is for naught because there are no great, perfect,
- 15:28Speaker 8: There is one who is there for us.
- 15:31Speaker 3: There is one who knows what's going on in our hearts.
- 15:34Speaker 3: There is one who has the answers.
- 15:36Speaker 8: And that is the steadfast Lord that we know, that
- 15:39Speaker 8: we love, that we serve.
- 15:42Speaker 3: And, you know, it's important, as you said.
- 15:48Speaker 8: Such that people look at us in the middle of
- 15:50Speaker 8: our difficulties and we're able to give an answer for
- 15:54Speaker 8: the reason for the hope that is in us with
- 15:57Speaker 8: meekness and trembling. It's not us. It's the God we
- 16:01Speaker 8: cling to. It's the God we've run to. And we
- 16:05Speaker 8: know that his mercies are new every morning. We know
- 16:08Speaker 8: that he is faithful. We know that he loves us
- 16:11Speaker 8: with a steadfast love.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Well, and that's one of the reasons, um, It's kind
- 16:16Speaker 1: of interesting that this is all happening on the same day,
- 16:19Speaker 1: but my music group released a song at midnight last
- 16:23Speaker 1: night called Yesterday the Same, and it picks up on
- 16:25Speaker 1: that Hebrews passage and also Psalm 102, where it talks
- 16:29Speaker 1: about how God's love and faithfulness are the same yesterday
- 16:33Speaker 1: and today and tomorrow and forever. And the idea is
- 16:40Speaker 1: whether we acknowledge it or not, whether we are in
- 16:44Speaker 1: alignment with it or not. I talk a lot about
- 16:46Speaker 1: wanting to be in alignment with God's plan and his will.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I talk about that because it's easier than being in
- 16:52Speaker 1: opposition to his plan and his will. When we choose
- 16:55Speaker 1: to align ourselves with the one who made us, we
- 17:00Speaker 1: know that on a deeper level than any other experience
- 17:03Speaker 1: can give us. And I think that there's so many people, Dave,
- 17:06Speaker 1: this week that need that word of hope.
- 17:11Speaker 3: I 100% agree.
- 17:11Speaker 8: And if you're listening today and you've never taken that
- 17:15Speaker 8: step of, and we use terms that people often don't understand,
- 17:19Speaker 8: but giving your heart to the Lord, recognizing that you
- 17:24Speaker 8: and I struggle, we're separated from God because of our sin,
- 17:29Speaker 8: that God sent his son, God in the flesh, Jesus,
- 17:33Speaker 8: to die for that sin and to rise again, that
- 17:36Speaker 8: Jesus took our place and rose again.
- 17:38Speaker 3: And And if you or anyone.
- 17:42Speaker 8: Will open their heart to what God has provided, if
- 17:46Speaker 8: you will open your heart, believe what he has done
- 17:48Speaker 8: for you is true, and then rely on that, trust
- 17:52Speaker 8: in that. Take your faith off of your sacraments or
- 17:56Speaker 8: your religiosity or whatever your faith is in and place
- 18:01Speaker 8: it in God's provision for our salvation.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Christ lives. and Christ alone.
- 18:07Speaker 8: Understanding that that comes out of God's steadfast love for
- 18:12Speaker 8: you and I.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Different. You will have hope.
- 18:19Speaker 8: It won't be an easy life necessarily. Your problems won't
- 18:23Speaker 8: go away. But like Jeremiah, you'll be able to say
- 18:28Speaker 8: the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases.
- 18:32Speaker 3: His mercies never come to an end. They're new every morning.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Great is your faithfulness.
- 18:39Speaker 1: And you can count on it. You can take it
- 18:41Speaker 1: to the bank tomorrow and the day after. Um, Jesus
- 18:45Speaker 1: is not changing. He's not leaving. Everyone else in life
- 18:49Speaker 1: might leave there. You might not even be able to
- 18:52Speaker 1: get your kitten to be loyal to you. Like, and
- 18:54Speaker 1: kittens are pretty loyal. I'm just saying this because we
- 18:57Speaker 1: have new kittens in the house, but it's like, we
- 19:00Speaker 1: don't have to worry about, about what Jesus has said.
- 19:04Speaker 1: And yeah, maybe it's sacraments and maybe it's religiosity, or
- 19:08Speaker 1: maybe it's just anger and frustration that you're holding onto
- 19:12Speaker 1: and blaming Jesus. God or other people for what you've experienced.
- 19:18Speaker 1: And maybe those are legitimate gripes and angers. But I
- 19:22Speaker 1: will tell you that God's big enough to handle it.
- 19:26Speaker 1: There is no sin. There is no path. There is
- 19:28Speaker 1: no frustration. There is no desperation. There is nothing that
- 19:32Speaker 1: is too big that he can't overcome on your behalf.
- 19:37Speaker 3: And he has.
- 19:38Speaker 1: And he wants you to know his peace today. Dave Watson,
- 19:42Speaker 1: real quickly, this Sunday, what are you teaching on at
- 19:45Speaker 1: Calvary Chapel, Staten Island?
- 19:50Speaker 8: Verse 5 through 2 chapter to the second chapter the
- 19:54Speaker 8: second verse we're going to be talking about really the
- 19:58Speaker 8: benefits of our relationship with God and how to keep
- 20:04Speaker 8: those benefits going how to enjoy them every single day.
- 20:09Speaker 1: And if you can't get there in person listen online
- 20:12Speaker 1: at WMCA.com from anywhere around the world you can tune
- 20:17Speaker 1: in at what time exactly Dave.
- 20:19Speaker 8: 1130 Eastern Standard Time.
- 20:23Speaker 3: We're on from 1130 to, believe.
- 20:25Speaker 8: It or not, 1240.
- 20:27Speaker 3: You get an hour and 10 minutes of us.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Well, and having been there and worshipped with Calvary Chapel
- 20:34Speaker 1: several times, I strongly, strongly encourage you to check it out.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Dave Watson, thank you so much.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Thank you so much, Kevin. God bless you. Have a
- 20:41Speaker 3: great rest of the week. Same.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Kevin McCullough coming right back from New York.
- 20:47Speaker 9: Stick around for more of That Kevin next.
- 20:53Speaker 10: Here he is from New York.
- 21:11Speaker 4: That Kevin.
- 21:12Speaker 7: Kevin McCullough.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Welcome back.
- 21:19Speaker 4: 800-937-9673.
- 21:19Speaker 1: It's That Kevin Show. I am That Kevin, Kevin McCullough.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us. Michael Woolworth is back
- 21:25Speaker 1: with us as well. And Michael, we need 8,800 Bibles.
- 21:30Speaker 1: We need someone to say, yes, I will take 20
- 21:33Speaker 1: of them here, 30 of them there, 50 of them there.
- 21:36Speaker 1: But in the culmination of those 8,800 Bibles, we're going
- 21:39Speaker 1: to help more than 10,000 people receive a Bible. And
- 21:42Speaker 1: then another, that times 12, we're going to hear the
- 21:45Speaker 1: gospel and probably give their life to Jesus as a result.
- 21:48Speaker 1: But tell us how it all works.
- 21:50Speaker 11: Well, let me say thanks to a few folks who
- 21:52Speaker 11: have gotten involved. Gregory of Bull Shoals, Arkansas said, I'm
- 21:56Speaker 11: in at 20 Bibles. Rhonda of Brooklyn said, Michael, Kevin,
- 21:59Speaker 11: count me in at 10 Bibles. Nita listening in Louisiana said,
- 22:03Speaker 11: I want to be a part of this, a gift
- 22:05Speaker 11: today of two Bibles. But you know, if you love
- 22:07Speaker 11: your Bible, you know, if God has worked powerfully through
- 22:10Speaker 11: his word, to grow you into the believer that you
- 22:13Speaker 11: are today. We're simply asking you, give that to new
- 22:16Speaker 11: believers who yearn to read His precious promises every day, right?
- 22:21Speaker 11: That's what we're all about at Bible League, engaging people
- 22:23Speaker 11: in the Word of God all around the world. We've
- 22:26Speaker 11: done this for 88 years. We've reached about 100 million
- 22:29Speaker 11: people with the gospel by the grace of God. About
- 22:32Speaker 11: 6,000 are reached every day. But Kevin, clearly, we could
- 22:34Speaker 11: not do what we do as a global ministry without
- 22:38Speaker 11: listeners to that Kevin show. Again, you have the ability
- 22:42Speaker 11: to not only be concerned wherever you're listening today, the
- 22:44Speaker 11: greater New York City area, Colorado, Arkansas, some of the
- 22:48Speaker 11: places we're mentioning. You have the ability to look abroad
- 22:51Speaker 11: and say, you know what? Those are members of my
- 22:53Speaker 11: spiritual family. You've got a clip from this man, Ming Chang.
- 22:56Speaker 11: who's in his 70s. He's a former Zen Buddhist. Kevin,
- 23:00Speaker 11: he's in Vietnam. He's in the communist-run country of Vietnam.
- 23:04Speaker 11: He told me, he said, Michael, I lost 100 family
- 23:06Speaker 11: members in the Vietnam War. Some of those were civilians.
- 23:10Speaker 11: Some of those were soldiers. But he said all of
- 23:12Speaker 11: this happened right near where I met him, Kevin. That
- 23:15Speaker 11: was Ho Chi Minh City, right? And this man has
- 23:17Speaker 11: led about 100 people to Christ in his small, remote village, again,
- 23:22Speaker 11: in a communist country that recently opened its doors to
- 23:25Speaker 11: to the gospel.
- 23:26Speaker 3: And I love what he says.
- 23:27Speaker 11: He likens the Bible to a map, right? He says
- 23:29Speaker 11: a map directs us places, right? In this case, the
- 23:32Speaker 11: Bible directs us to all that's true, right? But share this,
- 23:36Speaker 11: and then I want to come back and talk more
- 23:38Speaker 11: about this man, Ming. He is in Vietnam.
- 23:42Speaker 12: If they don't have Bible, how they can find the truth?
- 23:44Speaker 12: Because the Bible like a map to bring them to
- 23:47Speaker 12: find the truth. So if they don't have a map,
- 23:50Speaker 12: they couldn't find any truth. So it is very special
- 23:55Speaker 12: opportunity that the Lord answer our prayer. Our country open
- 24:00Speaker 12: the door for the gospel. And many people, they are
- 24:03Speaker 12: really hungry for the word of God. And then they
- 24:06Speaker 12: need the Bible.
- 24:08Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:08Speaker 11: Kevin, you in the last segment alluded to, you know,
- 24:11Speaker 11: where do you go for comfort and direction, right? The Psalms, right?
- 24:14Speaker 11: I mean, if we can ascertain that King David relied
- 24:17Speaker 11: on the scriptures, right, to help him, you know, kind
- 24:21Speaker 11: of realign his perspective with the Lord's. We need that,
- 24:24Speaker 11: don't we? In fact, you know, when I'm anxious, Kevin,
- 24:27Speaker 11: I go to the Psalms, right? Psalm 4 says, It's
- 24:29Speaker 11: in your peace that I will live, David writes. You know,
- 24:32Speaker 11: when I'm tired, Isaiah 40 says what? He gives power
- 24:35Speaker 11: to the weak and strength to the powerless. You know,
- 24:38Speaker 11: when I'm lonely, it's Psalm 73, right? Lord, I belong
- 24:42Speaker 11: to you and you hold my hand. When I need wisdom,
- 24:44Speaker 11: right path, Lord. You know, if you're feeling unloved, you
- 24:48Speaker 11: go to where? Zephaniah 3, you find out that what?
- 24:50Speaker 11: God delights in you with gladness. He rejoices over you.
- 24:54Speaker 11: with joyful songs. Let me just give you three of
- 24:57Speaker 11: those right now that are praying for Bibles today. Dorcas
- 24:59Speaker 11: is a widowed mother of three, lives near Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Sadly,
- 25:04Speaker 11: her husband was murdered by the El Shabab terrorist cell
- 25:07Speaker 11: that absolutely hates Christianity. She received Christ after walking two
- 25:11Speaker 11: hours each way to an evangelistic meeting that was led
- 25:14Speaker 11: by Bible League Kevin. And today she is praying for
- 25:17Speaker 11: a Bible. Praveen is near New Delhi, India, was beaten
- 25:21Speaker 11: by Hindu extremists after being led to Jesus by a
- 25:24Speaker 11: pastor in his small village there in the country of India.
- 25:28Speaker 11: He's married to Chandra. They have three children. They're praying
- 25:31Speaker 11: for a Hindi language Bible to lead the family in
- 25:34Speaker 11: the ways of the Lord. And then as it relates
- 25:37Speaker 11: to us, I'm thinking of, you know, most of us
- 25:39Speaker 11: know John 316, right? That's blowing in the end zones of,
- 25:41Speaker 11: you know, college football games across the nation this time
- 25:45Speaker 11: of the year. How many of us know 1 John 3, 16?
- 25:48Speaker 11: You know, John writes, he said, this is how we
- 25:50Speaker 11: know what love is. Jesus laid down his life for us,
- 25:54Speaker 11: and we ought to lay down our lives for our
- 25:55Speaker 11: brothers and sisters. John goes on, if anyone with a
- 25:59Speaker 11: means to help sees a brother or sister in need,
- 26:02Speaker 11: but shows no pity on them, how can the love
- 26:04Speaker 11: of God be in that person, John asked. So he says,
- 26:07Speaker 11: dear children, let us love not with words or speech,
- 26:10Speaker 11: but in truth and in action. And Kevin, I'm grateful
- 26:13Speaker 11: I don't have to come and try to convict this
- 26:15Speaker 11: listening family of giving. My goodness, we just talked about
- 26:18Speaker 11: in more than 20 years of kingdom partnership, more than
- 26:21Speaker 11: half a million waiting believers now have God's word. As
- 26:24Speaker 11: I say, they're using those to make much of him
- 26:26Speaker 11: to point others to the hope of the gospel. But
- 26:29Speaker 11: there you have two families, one on the continent of Africa,
- 26:32Speaker 11: another in the region of Asia, not praying for our
- 26:34Speaker 11: pity or our protection today, but for what? It's the
- 26:38Speaker 11: precious word of God.
- 26:40Speaker 1: 1-800-937-9673, 1-800-937-9673. You can also, if it's easier to remember,
- 26:48Speaker 1: use 1-800-YES-WORD, 1-800-YES-WORD. Or you can just go online to
- 26:54Speaker 1: thatkevinshow.com and click the Bible League banner at the top
- 26:57Speaker 1: of the page. And again, if there's any, for any
- 26:59Speaker 1: reason that you don't see it or it's harder to
- 27:01Speaker 1: find than you thought, just call 1-800-YES-WORD, 1-800-Y-E-S-WORD. W-O-R-D but
- 27:07Speaker 1: we're grateful for every gift that is coming in and
- 27:10Speaker 1: friends this is a unique moment to give because there
- 27:15Speaker 1: is a Bible for Bible doubling match that is in
- 27:18Speaker 1: effect so if you can give you know 20 Bibles
- 27:21Speaker 1: which is a $ 100 gift that's going to turn into
- 27:25Speaker 1: 40 Bibles right now and just because you choose to
- 27:27Speaker 1: give it now if you give it at another part
- 27:29Speaker 1: of the year it may only be 20 Bibles but
- 27:32Speaker 1: because there's a matching challenge underway right now it turns
- 27:35Speaker 1: into twice as many And that helps twice as many.
- 27:37Speaker 1: And we need every Bible that we can put in
- 27:39Speaker 1: the hands of these people that are asking for them.
- 27:42Speaker 1: 8,800 to go to help just get the names on
- 27:46Speaker 1: the list that we know about right now. 1-800-YES-WORD, 1-800-YES-WORD, 1-800-YES-WORD.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Serving it up with a no-drink Minnow High. It's that
- 28:07Speaker 1: Kevin Mac show.
- 28:11Speaker 13: We just had a plane crash into the upper floor
- 28:15Speaker 13: of the World Trade Center.
- 28:18Speaker 5: That's confirmed.
- 28:19Speaker 7: We have fire on several floors, the upper floors of
- 28:22Speaker 7: the World Trade Center.
- 28:24Speaker 8: An airplane has crashed into the World Trade Center.
- 28:27Speaker 3: This just into our newsroom. A plane has crashed into
- 28:31Speaker 3: the World Trade Center. There appears to be a gaping hole.
- 28:34Speaker 4: Oh, there it goes.
- 28:34Speaker 5: There it goes.
- 28:35Speaker 4: There it goes.
- 28:36Speaker 8: The World Trade Center has collapsed.
- 28:38Speaker 14: No one in the room has collapsed.
- 28:40Speaker 6: Okay. And welcome back to That Kevin Show, as.
- 28:44Speaker 15: We remember 9-11 25 years to the day.
- 28:47Speaker 16: When the night seems to say.
- 29:08Speaker 4: All hope is lost.
- 29:13Speaker 6: Gone away But I know I'm.
- 29:18Speaker 4: Not alone By the light.
- 29:22Speaker 3: She stands.
- 29:33Speaker 4: She stands Then she.
- 29:35Speaker 5: Waves Faithful friend Shimmering stars Just when you think it
- 30:05Speaker 5: might be over Just when you think the fight is.
- 30:13Speaker 17: Gone Someone will risk his life to raise.
- 30:21Speaker 4: Her There she stands.
- 30:32Speaker 6: There she flies. Clear blue sky.
- 30:42Speaker 4: Reminds us with red of.
- 30:48Speaker 6: Those that die. In their stream.
- 31:14Speaker 17: When evil calls itself a martyr When all your.
- 31:17Speaker 5: Hopes come crashing down Someone will.
- 31:20Speaker 6: Pull you from the rubble.
- 31:34Speaker 5: Then she stands We've.
- 31:40Speaker 17: Seen her flying torn and tattered We've seen her stand
- 31:49Speaker 17: the test of time And through it all.
- 31:53Speaker 5: The fools have fallen.
- 31:55Speaker 4: Then she stands And through the fight, she stands.
- 32:48Speaker 1: You're listening to a special edition of That Kevin Show,
- 32:52Speaker 1: September 11th, 25 years later. I'm Kevin McCullough.
- 33:01Speaker 2: You say you'll never forget where you were when you
- 33:04Speaker 2: heard the news on September 11th, 2001.
- 33:06Speaker 4: Neither will I.
- 33:16Speaker 2: I was on the 110th floor in a smoke-filled room
- 33:19Speaker 2: with a man who called his wife to say goodbye.
- 33:27Speaker 2: I held his fingers steady as he dialed. I gave
- 33:32Speaker 2: him the piece to say, Honey, I'm not going to
- 33:36Speaker 2: make it.
- 33:38Speaker 3: But it's okay. I'm ready to go.
- 33:43Speaker 2: I was with his wife when he called as she
- 33:45Speaker 2: fed breakfast to their children. I held her up as
- 33:49Speaker 2: she tried to understand his words. And as she realized
- 33:54Speaker 2: he wasn't coming home that night. I was in the
- 34:00Speaker 2: stairwell of the 23rd floor when a woman cried out
- 34:04Speaker 2: to me for help. I've been knocking on the door
- 34:09Speaker 2: of your heart for 50 years. I said, of course
- 34:13Speaker 2: I'll show you the way home. Only believe in me now.
- 34:22Speaker 2: I was at the base of the building when the
- 34:24Speaker 2: priest ministered to the injured and devastated souls. I took
- 34:29Speaker 2: him home to tend his flock in heaven. He heard
- 34:34Speaker 2: my voice and answered. I was on all four of
- 34:41Speaker 2: those planes in every seat with every prayer. I was
- 34:50Speaker 2: with the crew as they were overtaken. I was in
- 34:54Speaker 2: the very hearts of the believers there comforting and assuring
- 34:59Speaker 2: them that their faith has saved them. I was in
- 35:03Speaker 2: Texas Kansas London I was standing next to you when
- 35:11Speaker 2: you heard the terrible news did you sense me? I
- 35:18Speaker 2: want you to know that I saw every face I
- 35:22Speaker 2: knew every name though not all know me some met
- 35:31Speaker 2: me for the first time on the 86th floor some
- 35:37Speaker 2: sought me with their last breath some couldn't hear me
- 35:44Speaker 2: calling to them through the smoke and flames come to
- 35:48Speaker 2: me this way take my hand some chose for the
- 35:57Speaker 2: final time to ignore me but I was there I
- 36:09Speaker 2: did not place you in the tower that day You
- 36:13Speaker 2: may not know why, but I do. However, if you
- 36:21Speaker 2: were there in that explosive moment in time, would you
- 36:27Speaker 2: have reached for me?
- 36:28Speaker 5: September 11th, 2001 was not the end of.
- 36:30Speaker 4: The journey for you.
- 36:40Speaker 2: But someday your journey will end and I'll be there
- 36:43Speaker 2: for you as well. Seek me now while I may
- 36:51Speaker 2: be found. Then, at any moment, you know you're ready
- 36:58Speaker 2: to go. I will be in the stairwell of your
- 37:03Speaker 2: final moments. Remember, I love you.
- 37:21Speaker 1: One of the things I have worried about as the
- 37:24Speaker 1: last 25 years have come and gone is just how
- 37:28Speaker 1: quickly our nation might forget about what happened on this
- 37:32Speaker 1: day a quarter of a century ago. I forget about it.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Not completely. You can't if you lived through it. But
- 37:42Speaker 1: most of the year I don't think about September 11.
- 37:46Speaker 1: And then September comes. And there it is. The second plane.
- 37:53Speaker 1: I remember watching it hit. Not the replay, not the
- 37:58Speaker 1: multitude of replays, but the actual moment that it happened.
- 38:05Speaker 1: The first plane had left rooms for questions.
- 38:07Speaker 3: An accident?
- 38:08Speaker 1: Something going wrong? Terribly wrong? But the second plane answered them,
- 38:14Speaker 1: and we were under attack. I remember the bodies. I
- 38:21Speaker 1: hate even saying that. People falling from buildings because whatever
- 38:27Speaker 1: was behind them was worse than whatever was outside the
- 38:30Speaker 1: open window. And 25 years later, I forced myself to
- 38:36Speaker 1: watch the footage. I remember the towers coming down. I
- 38:42Speaker 1: remember staring at the television trying to understand what I
- 38:45Speaker 1: was seeing. Buildings that had been part of the New
- 38:48Speaker 1: York skyline were just gone. And I remember something else,
- 38:56Speaker 1: something most people probably don't know about my September 11th,
- 38:59Speaker 1: the day before I had just gotten my first talk show.
- 39:04Speaker 1: september 10th so much for easing into the job my
- 39:10Speaker 1: second day as host terrorist attacked the united states and
- 39:13Speaker 1: i ended up being on the air for 18 hours
- 39:18Speaker 1: i had a live microphone in front of me while
- 39:20Speaker 1: i was trying to process exactly the same thing everybody
- 39:23Speaker 1: else was listening and trying to process but what do
- 39:28Speaker 1: you say in those moments I genuinely didn't know. We
- 39:34Speaker 1: took calls. Some people cried. I cried. We prayed. And
- 39:40Speaker 1: underneath all of it was a question I don't think
- 39:42Speaker 1: people who weren't old enough to experience that day can
- 39:46Speaker 1: completely understand. But we asked the rest of the day,
- 39:49Speaker 1: was it over? Were there more planes, more targets, more
- 39:54Speaker 1: people waiting to attack? Nobody really knew the answer. Fighter
- 39:58Speaker 1: jets were over American cities and airports went silent. And
- 40:02Speaker 1: for weeks after, a low-flying airplane could make you a
- 40:06Speaker 1: little nervous in a way it never had before. That's
- 40:11Speaker 1: difficult to explain now. Before September 11th, airplanes were just airplanes.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Then they weren't. And somewhere in those awful days, something
- 40:22Speaker 1: else happened that I haven't seen quite the same way since.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Republicans and Democrats walked out onto the steps of the
- 40:28Speaker 1: United States Capitol together and sang God Bless America. They
- 40:34Speaker 1: weren't very good. Some of them stumbled over the words.
- 40:38Speaker 1: But nobody cared about that. For a few minutes, they
- 40:42Speaker 1: weren't Republicans or Democrats. They were Americans. Churches filled up, too.
- 40:48Speaker 1: People prayed who hadn't prayed in years, and I don't
- 40:51Speaker 1: say that critically, quite the opposite. Sometimes you discover what
- 40:55Speaker 1: you believe when you've run out of everything else to
- 40:57Speaker 1: hold on to. And I remember going to my church
- 41:00Speaker 1: that night, and the place was packed. We were scared
- 41:05Speaker 1: and angry and grieving. But for a little while, we
- 41:09Speaker 1: were together. It didn't last. Of course it didn't last.
- 41:13Speaker 1: We're human.
- 41:13Speaker 4: But it happened.
- 41:15Speaker 6: It happened.
- 41:18Speaker 1: And that's the part I don't want to forget. We
- 41:24Speaker 1: came together. 25 years later. Somehow, we made it through
- 41:36Speaker 1: that togetherness. That's what September does to me. For 11 months,
- 41:41Speaker 1: I think I've put it somewhere. In a back pocket
- 41:46Speaker 1: or in tucked away memory. And then September comes around.
- 41:52Speaker 1: And I realize I haven't forgotten nearly as much as
- 41:55Speaker 1: I thought I had. And today we will not forget,
- 41:58Speaker 1: but we will remember. It's That Kevin Show.
- 42:05Speaker 6: That Kevin Show.
- 42:22Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 42:51Speaker 7: Here he is from New York, that Kevin, Kevin McCullough.
- 42:58Speaker 1: All right, Kevin McCullough, glad to have you back with us.
- 43:02Speaker 1: It is kind of a surreal day to think that
- 43:05Speaker 1: 25 years have passed since I was standing in my
- 43:11Speaker 1: little condo unit in the western suburbs of Chicago. My
- 43:16Speaker 1: eyes trained to my television, which was in my bedroom.
- 43:20Speaker 1: I had a little desk and working area in my bedroom.
- 43:23Speaker 1: And after the first plane had gone into Tower 2,
- 43:32Speaker 1: my sister radio station, which did not have a news department,
- 43:36Speaker 1: working for Salem Media there in Chicago, the 106.7 The Fish,
- 43:40Speaker 1: the FM music station morning show, needed... news reports because
- 43:46Speaker 1: this plane having crashed into the first tower was so
- 43:49Speaker 1: unusual and it was becoming a national story within just
- 43:53Speaker 1: minutes of it happening. And so I offered to stand
- 43:57Speaker 1: by for them and to watch the news and anything
- 44:01Speaker 1: that needed to be reported on that was significant. We
- 44:04Speaker 1: would we would break in with their show and do
- 44:08Speaker 1: the breaks and give them the up to the date
- 44:10Speaker 1: up to date info. And while I'm literally on the
- 44:14Speaker 1: phone with them doing a live report, I see the
- 44:18Speaker 1: second plane and I see it enter the building and
- 44:23Speaker 1: the fireball that comes out the other side. And it
- 44:26Speaker 1: was just something that, you know, I said in the monologue,
- 44:30Speaker 1: I try to tuck these things away and not really
- 44:31Speaker 1: think about them for most of the year. And then
- 44:34Speaker 1: around September 1st through September 11th, I'm just tortured by,
- 44:37Speaker 1: you know, remembering and reliving things. Kind of hit home
- 44:42Speaker 1: especially hard last night for me because after I got
- 44:44Speaker 1: in from the scene conference and went and picked up
- 44:46Speaker 1: my daughter, she had just studied 9-11 for the first
- 44:49Speaker 1: time in class yesterday and had some experiences with the
- 44:54Speaker 1: videos that she hadn't seen before and had some anxiety
- 44:59Speaker 1: about the future and what it all looks like. And
- 45:02Speaker 1: I think of that and I tie that back to
- 45:06Speaker 1: something that I heard from John Piper this week at
- 45:08Speaker 1: the scene conference. Kevin McCullough, by the way, thanks for
- 45:11Speaker 1: being here. So John Piper told the incredible story of
- 45:16Speaker 1: William Tyndale and his translation of about three-fourths of the
- 45:21Speaker 1: Bible that he did on his own way before Bible
- 45:25Speaker 1: translation was cool or hip. In fact, he lost his
- 45:30Speaker 1: life for it. He was able to translate the entire
- 45:33Speaker 1: New Testament, but the Old Testament he only got about
- 45:35Speaker 1: halfway through. And that 75% of the scripture became the
- 45:42Speaker 1: basis for the Geneva Bible, the English Standard Bible, and
- 45:46Speaker 1: the King James Bible, which was the eventual translation that
- 45:50Speaker 1: most of your modern day translations are patterned after, not
- 45:55Speaker 1: translated from, but they seek to imitate what the King
- 45:59Speaker 1: James did. And making God's word available for every man.
- 46:05Speaker 1: But what was the reason that William Tyndale was punished
- 46:09Speaker 1: for that? Why was he put to death for that?
- 46:12Speaker 1: Isn't it a good thing to have the Bible in
- 46:14Speaker 1: the language of the masses? Well, akin to the terrorists
- 46:19Speaker 1: of 9-11, people that oppose what the Bible says will
- 46:25Speaker 1: go to any length necessary to stop it. And while
- 46:30Speaker 1: Tyndale died in a miserable, excruciating death, After suffering in
- 46:37Speaker 1: prison for 14 years in conditions that were so utterly abysmal,
- 46:41Speaker 1: I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did. But
- 46:46Speaker 1: that experience for him, the reason it was carried out
- 46:50Speaker 1: was because he was suffering for what was true. The
- 46:53Speaker 1: people that attacked us on 9-11 attack us because we
- 46:58Speaker 1: dare to say that their way of life is not true,
- 47:02Speaker 1: that their religion is not true, that their faith is
- 47:05Speaker 1: not true. that their scriptures are not true. It's not
- 47:10Speaker 1: enough for them to be ecumenical of mind and allow
- 47:14Speaker 1: all people to exist and to say, let's go along
- 47:17Speaker 1: to get along.
- 47:17Speaker 8: No.
- 47:19Speaker 1: What they believe, what they hold in their heart, is
- 47:23Speaker 1: that if you do not agree with them, then you
- 47:26Speaker 1: are the enemy. You are the evil one. And like
- 47:29Speaker 1: the authorities of William Tyndale's day, the solution to it
- 47:32Speaker 1: is death. And that's why the clerics in Iran chant
- 47:36Speaker 1: death to America. That's why they chant death to Israel.
- 47:41Speaker 1: The people who love the Bible are the problem in
- 47:45Speaker 1: their mind. And that's just one of the reasons, friends,
- 47:49Speaker 1: why every believer that is in an Islamic country that
- 47:54Speaker 1: wants a copy of God's word, I want to help
- 47:56Speaker 1: them get God's word in abundance. That's why we partner
- 47:59Speaker 1: with the Bible League. That's why I asked you to
- 48:03Speaker 1: call 1-800-937-9673. And today, if you give a gift to
- 48:10Speaker 1: the Bible League for what we are doing, it will
- 48:13Speaker 1: be matched Bible for Bible. Yesterday, we had 108 Bibles,
- 48:17Speaker 1: 180 Bibles that were contributed. The day before, 485. Friends,
- 48:22Speaker 1: that's huge. But we are still closing in on about
- 48:27Speaker 1: 4,500 Bibles away. from where we need to be at
- 48:33Speaker 1: the end of the month. And so I need a
- 48:35Speaker 1: bunch of you to say, what can I do to help? If,
- 48:40Speaker 1: if many of you just went right now and said,
- 48:44Speaker 1: I'll give a hundred dollars, that's 20 Bibles per person,
- 48:47Speaker 1: but because it's going to be matched, it turns into
- 48:49Speaker 1: 40 Bibles. Can you help us with that task right now? One, 800-937-9673, 1-800-937-9673,
- 48:58Speaker 1: the Bible League, sharing the incredible power that is God's Word.
- 49:06Speaker 1: And on this day of all days, it's a day
- 49:08Speaker 1: that I feel like it's particularly relevant, particularly for those
- 49:11Speaker 1: that are suffering without Bibles in Islamic-controlled countries. They're doing
- 49:16Speaker 1: so at the threat of losing their life. Let's get
- 49:19Speaker 1: them the Bible. that they long for. 1-800-937-9673, 1-800-937-9673, 1-800-937-9673,
- 49:21Speaker 1: or give a generous gift when you go to ThatKevinShow.com.
- 49:51Speaker 7: Here he is from New York, that Kevin, Kevin McCullough.
- 49:59Speaker 1: Welcome back to 9-11, 25 years to the day later.
- 50:03Speaker 1: Kevin McCullough, glad to have you with us. In my
- 50:05Speaker 1: archive of conversations I've had with people from 9-11, none
- 50:11Speaker 1: was more visual and visceral than former police chief Bernie Carrick.
- 50:16Speaker 1: We lost him this last year and was honored to
- 50:19Speaker 1: attend his his memorial and his funeral. But I wanted
- 50:23Speaker 1: you to hear his story of just how harrowing it
- 50:26Speaker 1: was from his perspective on the day of 9-11.
- 50:31Speaker 18: In the morning, early in the morning, I was in
- 50:34Speaker 18: my office from the first plane at Tower 1. And
- 50:38Speaker 18: by time, the second plane struck Tower 2 and slammed
- 50:42Speaker 18: through the north side of that building that was standing
- 50:45Speaker 18: in front of it. I had gone downtown to meet
- 50:48Speaker 18: with the mayor and We were going to meet at
- 50:50Speaker 18: the temporary, at the emergency command center for the city,
- 50:55Speaker 18: which was in Southern World Trade, but I couldn't get
- 50:57Speaker 18: into the building because people were actually jumping from the
- 51:01Speaker 18: top of Tower 1. I was waiting for the mayor
- 51:04Speaker 18: when the second plane slammed through the north side of
- 51:08Speaker 18: Tower 2, and then finally met up with the mayor
- 51:11Speaker 18: about three or four minutes later when he arrived.
- 51:16Speaker 1: The next number of minutes were quite harrowing. You guys
- 51:19Speaker 1: were actually, when the towers came down, you actually got
- 51:22Speaker 1: kind of blocked in. Describe that portion of your story
- 51:25Speaker 1: that day.
- 51:28Speaker 18: Yeah, the mayor wanted to call the president. We were
- 51:31Speaker 18: looking for air support. We wanted to make sure there
- 51:35Speaker 18: was air control, that they were controlling the airspace around
- 51:40Speaker 18: New York City. We didn't know how many more planes
- 51:42Speaker 18: were in the air targeting New York, if any. And
- 51:48Speaker 18: I took the mayor into a small office at 75
- 51:51Speaker 18: Barclay Street, where he was on the phone with The
- 51:55Speaker 18: White House waiting for the president. They told him the
- 51:59Speaker 18: president was a dare. The vice president was going to
- 52:01Speaker 18: come to the phone. And about two minutes later, somebody
- 52:05Speaker 18: came back on the phone and they said, Mr. Mayor,
- 52:08Speaker 18: we can't. We're going to have to hang up. They're
- 52:11Speaker 18: evacuating the White House. And they think that the Pentagon
- 52:15Speaker 18: just got hit. And as they said that to him,
- 52:19Speaker 18: the building we were in began to shake like a
- 52:21Speaker 18: freight train was coming through the side of it. And
- 52:24Speaker 18: basically what that was was Tower 2 was imploding. We
- 52:28Speaker 18: were only two blocks north of that building. So the
- 52:32Speaker 18: windows started blowing out. We got smothered with this shit
- 52:37Speaker 18: and dust and gas and stuff. And we actually got
- 52:41Speaker 18: trapped in that building for about 20, 25 minutes. We
- 52:43Speaker 18: couldn't get out.
- 52:46Speaker 1: When you did get out, you emerged into a new world,
- 52:49Speaker 1: Bernie Carrick, and the next number of days were kind
- 52:53Speaker 1: of critical for Governor Pataki made the decision instead of
- 52:57Speaker 1: having two different command stations that he would just bring
- 53:00Speaker 1: his place to you. The feds decided to do the
- 53:04Speaker 1: same thing and everything was being run from lower Manhattan.
- 53:08Speaker 1: Talk about what the difficulties were over the next several
- 53:13Speaker 1: hours to days as you had to figure out if
- 53:15Speaker 1: this was going to be the end of it or
- 53:17Speaker 1: if there was more coming.
- 53:20Speaker 18: Well, you know, honestly, Kevin, that's a great, great question,
- 53:28Speaker 18: especially about the coordination between the feds and the state authorities.
- 53:34Speaker 18: You know, I've watched, I don't know, two dozen, three
- 53:38Speaker 18: dozen crises over the last 20 years handled by organizations
- 53:44Speaker 18: in this country, including the feds, including the military. I'm
- 53:48Speaker 18: going to tell you something. Our successes in overseeing the response,
- 53:53Speaker 18: the rescue, the recovery, and the investigation on and in
- 53:58Speaker 18: the aftermath of 9-11, in addition to managing the city,
- 54:03Speaker 18: in addition to keeping the city safe, it was all
- 54:06Speaker 18: as a result of enormously strong leadership by the mayor,
- 54:13Speaker 18: additions by the governor, by the people from the White House,
- 54:17Speaker 18: by the feds. But the mayor, ultimately, was responsible for
- 54:22Speaker 18: the city of New York. It was our responsibility. The
- 54:26Speaker 18: governor was there every step of the way, augmenting anything
- 54:31Speaker 18: we needed, no matter what it was. Most times at
- 54:34Speaker 18: our daily three or four crisis management meetings, every day,
- 54:39Speaker 18: the governor was there or his representative was there. And
- 54:43Speaker 18: the thing that came out of that for me was,
- 54:46Speaker 18: when you coordinate.
- 54:48Speaker 18: We're state and federal partners. Anything could be done. But
- 54:54Speaker 18: that is rarely seen today. There's still a lack of intel, cooperation, communication.
- 55:05Speaker 18: Nobody's ever done it. Nobody. Like we did it on
- 55:09Speaker 18: September 11th in the aftermath. And I think that was
- 55:13Speaker 18: really to our success. I've only talked about this recently,
- 55:19Speaker 18: but on October 7th, 2001, I was on the way
- 55:23Speaker 18: to a Yankee game to meet the mayor in the evening.
- 55:27Speaker 18: And the mayor called my car. As soon as I
- 55:29Speaker 18: got in the car, he called and he said the words,
- 55:33Speaker 18: it's happening. And I had no idea what he was
- 55:36Speaker 18: talking about. And I said, what's happening? What are you
- 55:38Speaker 18: talking about? He said, I just got a call from
- 55:41Speaker 18: President Bush. He said he would let us know if
- 55:45Speaker 18: he wanted me to call you and tell you what's happening.
- 55:49Speaker 18: And what was happening was that we were going into Afghanistan.
- 55:52Speaker 18: The president told the mayor and I on September 14th,
- 55:57Speaker 18: when we do this, you're going to be the first
- 55:59Speaker 18: to know. I'm going to let you know. And he did.
- 56:03Speaker 18: So I diverted. I didn't go to Yankee Stadium. I
- 56:05Speaker 18: went downtown. Me and Joe Dunn and Joe Esposito, my deputies,
- 56:10Speaker 18: we basically started securing up the city in the event
- 56:14Speaker 18: of any kind of retaliatory attacks. But I swear, with
- 56:20Speaker 18: that image in my head of us going into Afghanistan
- 56:24Speaker 18: to annihilate the people that attacked our city, to Joe
- 56:29Speaker 18: Biden surrendering Afghanistan to the Taliban and then having the
- 56:34Speaker 18: audacity to stand up which is chairman of the Joint
- 56:39Speaker 18: Chiefs and his press secretary to say, there is a
- 56:42Speaker 18: possibility that we can communicate with them and coordinate with
- 56:47Speaker 18: them and negotiate with them. Guess what? It's all a farce.
- 56:53Speaker 18: This is an enemy that despises us. This is an
- 56:57Speaker 18: enemy that we've been fighting for 20 years. This is
- 57:01Speaker 18: an enemy that has killed dozens and dozens of our military, personnel,
- 57:09Speaker 18: how could you have the gall to stand up at
- 57:12Speaker 18: a press conference and have any, any communications with them
- 57:17Speaker 18: at all? How could you give the Taliban Afghanistan? How
- 57:21Speaker 18: could you surrender a country? I don't get it.
- 57:24Speaker 1: There were things he didn't get, but he sure wasn't
- 57:26Speaker 1: afraid to speak truth. Kevin McCullough coming back.
- 57:30Speaker 9: Stick around for more of That Kevin. Serving it up
- 57:46Speaker 9: with a no-drink minimum.
- 57:49Speaker 7: It's That Kevin Show.
- 57:53Speaker 1: All right, welcome back. It's That Kevin Show, thatkevinshow.com. For
- 57:57Speaker 1: those of you that would like to go back and
- 57:59Speaker 1: revisit any part of it, the podcast is there. My
- 58:01Speaker 1: column is there. Starting on the day of the attacks,
- 58:05Speaker 1: 25 years ago, as I was on the air for
- 58:09Speaker 1: 18 hours in taking bits of audio from the news
- 58:14Speaker 1: cycles that were continually in front of us. We put
- 58:18Speaker 1: together this piece that we'll end with today for the
- 58:21Speaker 1: very first time. The audio that you're about to hear
- 58:24Speaker 1: all came from that day as it happened. We eventually
- 58:30Speaker 1: gathered visuals and other things and put it together as
- 58:32Speaker 1: a film on YouTube. But this was the day as
- 58:35Speaker 1: it unfolded and how the president comforted us that night,
- 58:39Speaker 1: quoting the Psalms. There will come a day by Faith
- 58:42Speaker 1: Hill on That Kevin Show.
- 58:44Speaker 13: It is absolutely an appalling day, not only here in Manhattan,
- 58:48Speaker 13: but also in Washington, where the Pentagon also was apparently
- 58:52Speaker 13: the subject of a strike by one of these hijacked airliners,
- 58:56Speaker 13: flying bombs, really.
- 58:57Speaker 9: The Pentagon still very much on fire.
- 59:01Speaker 3: The damage there, perhaps not.
- 59:02Speaker 13: As severe as it is at the World Trade Center,
- 59:06Speaker 13: but clearly America is under attack.
- 59:08Speaker 18: It's not.
- 59:10Speaker 12: Easy trying to understand how the world can be so cold.
- 59:22Speaker 15: Our police department, our fire.
- 59:25Speaker 17: Department, and our emergency people.
- 59:31Speaker 15: Are being stretched to the limit.
- 59:35Speaker 1: I'm sure we've also lost a significant number of them.
- 59:47Speaker 6: Wars are raging. Lives are scattered. Innocence is lost. And
- 59:55Speaker 6: hopes are shattered. The old are forgotten. The children are forsaken.
- 1:00:05Speaker 6: In this world we're living in, is there any hope?
- 1:00:09Speaker 15: There's a better place where I'll find a way.
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: And every tear.
- 1:00:16Speaker 15: You wipe away. The darkness will be gone.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: The weak shall be strong.
- 1:00:25Speaker 15: Hold on to your faith. There will come a day.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: There will come The loss of life is going to
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: be very great indeed.
- 1:00:41Speaker 13: Many of the important institutions here in Chicago shut down
- 1:00:46Speaker 13: as a result of the United States terrorist acts that
- 1:00:49Speaker 13: have occurred.
- 1:00:52Speaker 16: The victims were in airplanes or in their offices. Secretaries,
- 1:00:56Speaker 16: businessmen and women, military and federal workers, moms and dads,
- 1:01:00Speaker 16: friends and neighbors.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: You prepare for the worst, but you don't believe it'll happen.
- 1:01:04Speaker 11: And this is the worst.
- 1:01:09Speaker 15: Street the voices of earth the angels will.
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: Sing every knee will.
- 1:01:20Speaker 15: Bow sin will have no trace and the glory of
- 1:01:26Speaker 15: his amazing.
- 1:01:27Speaker 14: Grace Across the way, the construction workers just hung their
- 1:01:46Speaker 14: signs outside. God bless America and pray for families and victims.
- 1:01:58Speaker 16: And I pray they will be comforted by a power
- 1:02:00Speaker 16: greater than any of us, spoken through the ages in
- 1:02:03Speaker 16: Psalm 23. Even though I walk through the valley of
- 1:02:06Speaker 16: the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for you
- 1:02:09Speaker 16: are with me.
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: Thank you. Thank you.
