- 0:01Hello and welcome to the Christian Business Growth Podcast.
- 0:03Today I'm here with Andrew Wishmeier from Proclaim Cuba.
- 0:07We're gonna talk a little bit about his ministry, but I want you to keep this concept in your mind.
- 0:11We talked about this ahead of time.
- 0:12Business is ministry and ministry is business.
- 0:16You don't need to separate those things.
- 0:17We'll probably go a little bit more into that and everything.
- 0:19But Andrew, how did you get started in business?
- 0:24Well, it's interesting.
- 0:24You know, I have, I have a background in small business.
- 0:27I've always worked in the software and support side for these really small little niche software companies.
- 0:34So I was in the teleprompting business for about 15 years, uh, as an operator, travel around the world and, and, uh, got to do, you know, events for large companies like Merck
- 0:45or somebody like that, that would need to bring in their entire sales force.
- 0:48This was obviously before the internet and all of those kinds of things.
- 0:51So it's.
- 0:52camp out at the Opry land hotel as they brought in all of their sales people and all that sort of stuff.
- 0:57So that was an interesting world.
- 0:59Uh, definitely.
- 1:00Uh, and it was a small, small business, where you did the service of running a tele-prompting program.
- 1:06Then I sold tele-prompting software and, uh and because I'd been an operator, understood it well and understood the business.
- 1:13Uh, and then, um, unfortunately my boss became an alcoholic and ran that business into the ground.
- 1:18And, um, and then,
- 1:20A friend of mine, and this just speaks to networking, right?
- 1:24friend of mine, I let everybody know that I was looking for work.
- 1:27next thing you know, I'm having an interview with somebody, another small business, a lot of the same clients.
- 1:32So I was really blessed to be able to just step into another role.
- 1:35And I've been in a home office for years.
- 1:38So this was just a natural thing before anybody really was doing home office.
- 1:43I'd been doing it already for 20 years.
- 1:45So I was fortunate in that respect.
- 1:47So, worked for another small niche.
- 1:49audio video playback software did the same thing, software sales around the world, um, and customer support.
- 1:56Cause so being, um, helpful is something that's just wired into me.
- 2:02And so, having that element of it, not just being the sales side of it, but being helpful to people, um, was kind of a natural, um, process for me to make a transition, uh, into a
- 2:14full-time ministry position.
- 2:15So that's kind of the long story of that.
- 2:18So what was the transition like going from a business into a ministry?
- 2:22Tell us a little bit what that was like.
- 2:24that phrase of drinking from a fire hose.
- 2:26So, um, I had, I had never done anything like the, the role that I'm in.
- 2:32I, I'm the development director and so I have to raise funds for this ministry and God has given me a heart for Cuba for 21 years now.
- 2:42That was the first time that I ever, um, and then once I got there, it was just like, wow, this is
- 2:48This is amazing that this is some place in the world that I would have never imagined myself and here yet here I am.
- 2:54And so, um, you know, so God made that transition happen, but it was honestly one of the hardest things that I'd ever done because he gave me this burden for Cuba and this
- 3:07heightened it.
- 3:08Right.
- 3:09So once that happened, the stress level in my life went way up, right.
- 3:15Because
- 3:16had this burden for Cuba.
- 3:18Um, and it wasn't until, and I was bringing this to the Lord every single time.
- 3:23And, know, some, some of our listeners, I know as business owners relate to this, it's like, I just, the stress level in your business, because you want to do so well, you want
- 3:32to treat your customers well, you want to make sure that you are the best in the industry.
- 3:37Right.
- 3:37Um, and so God had to, had to take that burden and replace it with his burden.
- 3:44Right.
- 3:45So it, it, um, it was very interesting to me how that happened.
- 3:48So I'm about a year and a half in and, and I'm in, I'm in Cuba.
- 3:53leading a team in Cuba and, uh, and I'm just there at the church and there's a plaque on the wall and it has a verse on it, but it's in Spanish and I don't, I don't speak good
- 4:05Spanish.
- 4:05I'm embarrassed by that since I've been connected to Cuba for about 21 years, but I'm not good at languages.
- 4:11So I recognize the verse, but I didn't know exactly what it was.
- 4:14And so at three o'clock in the morning, I'm laying in bed and I decided I just got woke me up and I just decided I was going to translate it.
- 4:21I translated.
- 4:21So it's Matthew 11, 28 through 30.
- 4:24We're familiar with this verse.
- 4:26I'd heard this verse a thousand times before, but this hit me like a ton of bricks.
- 4:31It says, come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.
- 4:37Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and lowly in heart.
- 4:44and you will find rest for your souls.
- 4:47So, uh, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
- 4:52Right.
- 4:52So I had to, I had to take that burden that I had that was real.
- 4:55Nothing changed in my life.
- 4:57Right.
- 4:57Nothing, nothing had changed.
- 4:58Same amount of work, probably even more.
- 5:00Right.
- 5:01But he exchanged that burden that I was carrying for his, and he gave me rest and he gave me peace.
- 5:08and, you know, am I, am I stressed out at times?
- 5:10Sure I am, but I'm constantly
- 5:13recognizing the fact that he is the one who will give me the rest that I need to continue in the work that he prepared for me.
- 5:20Like he gave that to me.
- 5:21And so I recognize the fact that he's the one who's ultimately responsible in my life for that working out.
- 5:30have a weird question and just if you don't see it this way, that's okay, correct it and everything.
- 5:35But you're called into your ministry, but you have a burden for the people.
- 5:38Kind of talk about how do you see those working together or kind of pulling you forward into God's calling?
- 5:43Yeah, you know, God, I feel like God will lead you in the way that you are created, right?
- 5:51And so sometimes that can be a trial and error thing.
- 5:54Like you can go forward feeling like this is where God is leading me.
- 6:00And um many times that's to show you that that's not where you're supposed to be, right?
- 6:06That that's not a good place for you to be able to serve.
- 6:10What you really need to figure out is Lord
- 6:13where do you want me?
- 6:15But some of those lessons are very important that you would consider it, guess, negative reinforcement on those sorts of things.
- 6:21But you know that you're not supposed to be in those roles because you're actually created in a different way and your skills, your time, your talent, treasure, testimony, all of
- 6:32those things will be uh better spent in service in the way that God created you.
- 6:39you know, sometimes we can be in
- 6:42You know, there's, there's a lot of different schools and in business, right?
- 6:46Where they say, make sure that you have the right rear end and the right seat, right?
- 6:50That person needs to fit that role and do that job because they're really, really good at that.
- 6:56They can do some other things, but this is the way that they're really, they're really useful and valuable.
- 7:03And, um, and I see the same thing in the kingdom, the way that, that I've experienced it, the way that I've seen it happen in other people's lives and too.
- 7:11So, you know,
- 7:12I'm thrilled when people are connected to Cuba, but that doesn't mean that that's exactly where God wants them in the same way or connects their heart in the same way.
- 7:21But I want them to be connected.
- 7:22mean, my desire would be God's desire would be for you to connect in the way that you were designed.
- 7:27So, and that can work in certainly in business as well.
- 7:31It's like, find the, find the thing because we know we don't want to separate those two.
- 7:35Right.
- 7:36You don't separate your life and your ministry.
- 7:38Right.
- 7:38That never, that never works well.
- 7:40right, if you try to compartmentalize that.
- 7:43Yeah, absolutely.
- 7:44And thanks for pointing that out because we started off talking about your business is your ministry and your ministry is your business.
- 7:49And you are in a ministry that is a business and you recognize that.
- 7:54But I love the concept you're talking about because sometimes we have to go down a path to get it out of our heads, even though God's not blessing that path, until God gets us on
- 8:03the path that He wants us to work.
- 8:04At our church, we're going through the book of Judges.
- 8:06And that's one of the things we saw.
- 8:08This group of people went to this land to take it over, but they...
- 8:11didn't ask God ahead of time, they asked God to bless what they already started doing.
- 8:14And we do that in business sometimes.
- 8:16We ask God to catch up with us rather than stopping and being patient saying, God, what is that next step?
- 8:22Where do I go next?
- 8:24Yeah, exactly.
- 8:25Yeah.
- 8:26And those, those are hard lessons sometimes, you know, I think God has hard lessons for us, but it is in those things, you know, you've heard that analogy of the butterfly,
- 8:34right?
- 8:34Where, where the larva has to be in that compressed, cocoon in order to emerge as a butterfly, right?
- 8:42You have to go through the pressure and you have to go through the time, uh, it takes to produce, uh, the butterfly.
- 8:49And if you relieve any of that pressure or change any of those elements,
- 8:52The butterfly does not emerge.
- 8:54and so I think those are always, uh, beneficial to think about when it comes to, uh, some of the trials that you go through.
- 9:01And it's like, I know in my life, I didn't want to go through any of those sorts of things, but they certainly did help shape me, uh, into the person that I am now and will
- 9:11continue to shape me for years to come.
- 9:13Yeah, it's a matter of pruning and growing skills and developing those attitudes.
- 9:17You may need an attitude adjustment.
- 9:19Sometimes God needs to kind of correct us.
- 9:23Yeah.
- 9:24And those are, those are powerful, powerful moments in life, right?
- 9:27Especially when you reflect on them and you're like, really, I really needed to be corrected in that area.
- 9:32I agree.
- 9:33So what is God currently doing in your business or your ministry?
- 9:37Yeah.
- 9:37So, one of the things I was just in Cuba a couple of weeks ago, uh, after the hurricane, we were actually in the city, uh, and the, and the province called Santiago de Cuba.
- 9:47And, um we were trying to, uh, bring in some emergency supplies, some relief, uh, supplies and funds to help our ministry on the ground.
- 9:57Fortunately, we have funds in country that we can tap into that we can replenish later.
- 10:04So they immediately started, uh, working towards.
- 10:07uh, bringing food, just bringing relief supplies as much as they possibly can.
- 10:12Things are limited in Cuba in terms of what you can do, but you know, you can do some stuff.
- 10:16So we, do what we can, uh, to help do that.
- 10:19So I brought a team of eight people and, so I think one of the things that, um is always beneficial to think about, uh, in, in business in, in, um, in ministry, obviously again,
- 10:33the two.
- 10:34The two aren't separated.
- 10:35We run our business or we run our ministry with certain business elements, right?
- 10:40Because you want to be a good steward of what you have.
- 10:42So the funds that we will bring in, I'm reminded as I went on this trip that this is going to be a marathon, right?
- 10:51It's not going to be a sprint.
- 10:52We are going to have to um use the funds that we raise, the things that we have been able to obtain.
- 10:59um
- 11:00are going to be necessary to help this specifically this part of the country for years.
- 11:07it's, it's good.
- 11:08mean, things like benches, things like roofing, all of those things were gone.
- 11:13They just blown away by, I saw some of the biggest trees I've ever seen just uprooted and you just know the tremendous force that that takes.
- 11:20So I think trying to figure out how you can best serve um some of these small little home churches.
- 11:29We know we're going to have to put in power packages in a lot of these home churches that just have a, they have a gas generator, but gas is really hard to find and it's expensive,
- 11:39but as a backup to some solar packages that we're trying to put in as well, because their power situation is just, I mean, it's been normalized now that you have about three to
- 11:48four hours of power a day, if that.
- 11:50So most people just aren't operating with uh the thought of having power on a regular basis there now.
- 11:57that.
- 11:58alters your whole life, right?
- 11:59So, but if you can have a home church, and we've been fortunate enough to be able to plant 205 of them in the last two years uh with our partner, the Timothy Initiative.
- 12:10And by doing that, we've created these little houses of light, right?
- 12:13So, and so this will be a literal house of light, because you'll be able to utilize some of these power packages so that they can be a blessing to their communities.
- 12:21Um, they can do a little refrigeration, like a small little refrigerator.
- 12:25They can do fans.
- 12:26It could be a place where people can recharge their phones.
- 12:28Um, things like that.
- 12:30just small things like that, that we would take for granted now.
- 12:32So those are kind of the focus of our ministry at this point to, try to make sure that we sustain, um, what we call our four pillars of ministry, which is evangelism, discipleship,
- 12:44training, and community support.
- 12:46So we want every element of our, of our ministry to encompass those four pillars.
- 12:51and to be able to continue those as those small churches, those home churches develop.
- 12:56And there's a lot of work that goes into those uh and lots of love and care.
- 13:01And as you might imagine in a developing country, it's just, uh well, if you can even put Cuba in a developing sense, uh they just need that help.
- 13:12But how do you do that in a way that is uh beneficial, not just now, but going forward in their communities?
- 13:20Yeah, it's almost like a triage of stewardship.
- 13:22You only have so much resources, you have so much needs, you got to divide it up.
- 13:26You've got to be a manager and I bet there's a lot of prayer that goes behind all that.
- 13:30There really is.
- 13:31mean, you have to, uh, because it does seem overwhelming, just, mean, in business, you have those moments where you're just like totally overwhelmed about stuff like that.
- 13:39And then you give it back to the Lord and you say, Lord, help me figure out the best way that I can proceed forward.
- 13:46Right.
- 13:46And, um, and sometimes that takes a while to figure out what is going to be the most effective way that you can care for your customers, that you can care for the people that,
- 13:57that God has put before you, that you serve every single day.
- 14:00Um, it takes some time and it takes some effort and it takes prayer and, you know, but we're confident that in, that God will get us there.
- 14:09Um, eventually.
- 14:12And now we're gonna shift gears a little bit.
- 14:14Tell us, what are some tips you can give someone who's listening, who wants to grow their business, their ministry, their business, ah what are some tips you can give them to help
- 14:23them, something you've done in your business that might help them in their business?
- 14:26Sure.
- 14:27Um, one of the things that I was always, when I was, um, in my previous roles, I was always very thankful for the, for the people that, uh, were in it who were my clients.
- 14:38Right.
- 14:38And, uh I read a book once called sales dogs and, it attributed the sales, uh, personalities of, people with dog personalities.
- 14:49And I was like, that's kind of silly, but in a lot of ways there was a lot of truth to it.
- 14:53So I attributed.
- 14:55my style, my personality to being a golden retriever.
- 14:59I like to be liked, I like to help people.
- 15:01And uh so I recognize that in my, just in the way that I go about uh interacting with the world and with the people that I encounter and uh even in the ministry.
- 15:13I just, I make sure that I am very thankful for them uh and not to neglect them.
- 15:22I think that's one of the things in our, you know, we can get a big client base.
- 15:26can get a big donor base in my case, you know, and it's like, how do you make sure that you express to the people that you serve, how appreciative you are of them.
- 15:37And it's, easy to neglect them because you've got a thousand different things.
- 15:41It is for me.
- 15:42I know I've got a thousand other responsibilities, but if you don't express your uh gratitude for them as a client,
- 15:52Um, there's probably 10 other, 15 other, a hundred other people that they could do business with.
- 15:58So, um, I think just making sure, I mean, that seems like a basic thing, but, gratitude goes a long way, I think, and especially in this day and age where everybody feels like a
- 16:08commodity or that you're just another number or something like that.
- 16:11But if you can make those, you know, they say business isn't personal.
- 16:14Well, I think, you know, I think the most with a small business, the more you personally, you can make it.
- 16:19I think the better off you're going to be.
- 16:21So.
- 16:22Yeah, and you're talking about the authentic voice, not just saying thanks for your business.
- 16:25You're talking about being very specific to them.
- 16:28Are you talking emails?
- 16:29Do you send letters?
- 16:30What kind of things do you do personally?
- 16:31all of those things.
- 16:32mean, people communicate differently, right?
- 16:35So I think the best thing and one of the things I think that's most underrated and I just experienced this last week is a phone call, right?
- 16:42People don't use the phone that they have as an actual phone device.
- 16:46But when somebody, when you can call, even if you have to leave a voicemail, which is kind of an antiquated technology at this point, but to hear your voice, um,
- 16:56It makes a difference.
- 16:57I mean, it makes a difference in my life when somebody has made the effort to express their voice verbally to say thank you.
- 17:05Because they know, just like you and I know, that took effort.
- 17:09It took effort for you to pick up the phone.
- 17:11I mean, it's not a lot of effort, but it does take effort.
- 17:14We recognize that in our busy world.
- 17:16And so I've found that that goes a long way.
- 17:18And if you happen to get them on the phone and you are able to express uh just your appreciation for those things, uh
- 17:26I think it goes a long way.
- 17:28Yeah, and with technology, there's so much you can do.
- 17:30I've got a friend of mine, every birthday, she sends me an audio birthday message on Facebook.
- 17:35Because Facebook's going to remind her, that's the only way she gets reminded.
- 17:38I know that, man, I'm okay with that.
- 17:40But she takes time to say an audio version of that from that year.
- 17:43So that just makes it so much more different.
- 17:46And I got a text message just yesterday from somebody who was thanking me for something and I was like, out of the blue, and it was just one of those things, you just kind of
- 17:53feel it.
- 17:54It feels different, know, that's what makes it different.
- 17:56And I think also if you've served somebody well and you say thank you to them in a way that uh you're not asking for anything further, you're thanking them honestly, just
- 18:09earnestly.
- 18:10em That is the way that we like to be treated, right?
- 18:15It's that golden rule of how would you like to be treated?
- 18:18And I need to be reminded of that all the time too.
- 18:21I think that's why it's good to have community.
- 18:23It's good to have networking groups like our group.
- 18:25because we hear those things and we're like, you know what?
- 18:27You're right.
- 18:28I haven't, I haven't expressed my gratitude towards somebody.
- 18:31haven't, you know, I've neglected them probably just because I assume that they're always going to be a client or they order every week or whatever it might be.
- 18:38And, um, you can't neglect those things.
- 18:41And just as a small point for somebody listening, make sure your thinks is not a sales tool.
- 18:47Make sure it's a genuine thank you, not just a sheltered or shielded sales tactic.
- 18:55If you're doing it for a sales tactic, they'll see through that.
- 18:57But if you just think them and be honorable and be authentic to that, then people, you'll continue to keep yourself at what they call top of mind awareness.
- 19:06Keep yourself in their mind.
- 19:07That's what you want to do.
- 19:08That's your sales pitch, not your sales pitch thing.
- 19:11Thank you so much.
- 19:11Take 10 % off, next order.
- 19:13Do that.
- 19:14Say I truly, genuinely thank you for this specific thing.
- 19:18Be very specific because people need that in the world.
- 19:20People want to be seen in our world of digital disconnection.
- 19:24I think that personal connection is very important.
- 19:26So I don't think it's a small thing, Andrew.
- 19:28I think you pointed it out very succinctly and very crucially.
- 19:31Thank you for that.
- 19:34So how could someone get in touch with you?
- 19:38Okay.
- 19:38Well, so our, our website is a pro claim Cuba.org.
- 19:42Um, we're also leaving our, our, uh, natural disaster.
- 19:47We have a campaign going on.
- 19:48I mentioned that.
- 19:49So if you wanted to get directly to that, it's proclaimedcuba.org front slash.
- 19:54Hurricane dash relief.
- 19:57So, um, that that's not anything that you necessarily, if you wanted to read more about just what we're doing, that's where we're going to put that information.
- 20:05And there are as an opportunity to give, but that's.
- 20:08You know, I'd love for you to pray for that, uh mainly for those small little pastors.
- 20:12I don't mean that in a uh derogatory way.
- 20:17I just mean these are little churches.
- 20:19These are home churches.
- 20:20ah And these pastors are so faithful to serving their communities and they don't even have places for them to sit right now.
- 20:27I'm just like, this has stuck with me since I've been, I was there two weeks ago.
- 20:31I'm just like, how, how are they going to
- 20:34Bring people together, but they're so resourceful.
- 20:36They'll they'll figure something out.
- 20:37God will provide I've seen him do it before and so so I'm I'm thankful definitely for for people who've responded to that but uh Just we'd love to get to know you if you're
- 20:48interested in Cuba at any time.
- 20:50You're you're welcome to uh To talk to me directly uh you can connect through our info at pro claim cuba.org email address and uh I'll be happy to connect with you and talk with
- 21:00you more about how maybe your church or
- 21:03Maybe you personally could get involved.
- 21:05Perfect.
- 21:06Okay, Andrew, as we leave out here, what's one tip of wisdom you'd want to leave someone with?
- 21:11A tip of wisdom.
- 21:12um So there was a time when I went to Cuba.
- 21:20Obviously my world kind of has revolved around Cuba for the last 20 years just from my heart connection, right?
- 21:26So many of my stories, many of the wisdom points that I give come from there or are centered around there.
- 21:33So um I'm in Cuba one time, they actually in Havana.
- 21:37They actually have a statue of Christ that oversees the city.
- 21:42You may be surprised by that.
- 21:43I was when I saw it for the first time, he has his arm outstretched and he's a giant statue that overlooks the city.
- 21:50And, um, and so we went up there one day and there was a guy sitting there at the base.
- 21:56And a lot of times there's people selling things there.
- 21:58It was a young man and we started talking to him just about.
- 22:03you know, Christ, do you know who this is?
- 22:04It's like you're sitting there and uh he showed us his, his, his, identification and it actually said Fidel Castro.
- 22:11mean, the kids, you know, 16 years old, but so I don't know if it was fake or what, but anyway, he's, he's sitting there and, uh, but he got excited about, a, uh, bilingual Bible
- 22:22that we had.
- 22:23And, um, so we were, we were just talking to him about Christ and so he, and we showed him the Bible and he said, do you know, do know what this is?
- 22:31And he's like, yes.
- 22:32And so he knows, he told us he knows one verse and he opens it up and uh it takes it to Jeremiah 33 three.
- 22:40And I'll never forget this because it says, call unto me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things that you did not know.
- 22:49And so I have always remembered that moment.
- 22:52I've always remembered that verse uh because of the fact that it is God asking you to call into him.
- 23:00I mean, this is an earnest plea from your soul.
- 23:04He said, call unto me and I will answer you.
- 23:07I'll answer you.
- 23:07It may not be the answer you want, right?
- 23:09God knows our needs more than he wants to contribute to our wants.
- 23:14Although sometimes he gives us our wants, but along the way.
- 23:17So from a wisdom standpoint, call unto me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things that you didn't know.
- 23:24So the wisdom there is that God wants you to be teachable all the time, right?
- 23:29uh
- 23:30Learn, continue to learn uh because that part of learning about God, learning about how he works, learning about uh how he gives you new perspectives on things uh will just open
- 23:43your eyes to how the body of Christ works.
- 23:46And so uh in your business, in your ministry, the two of them coming together, how do those things work?
- 23:53Well, call on to God and ask him and he'll answer you and he'll show you how that works.
- 23:58And so
- 23:59You know, obviously God is the key to all of that.
- 24:01um And it's calling out to him and asking him because we know he gives wisdom very liberally also, right?
- 24:08He wants to pour out wisdom to us.
- 24:12Thank you, Andrew.
- 24:12I appreciate you being here with us today.
