Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: The power of protesting peacefully
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Freedom is a thing I think we can all love
- 0:03Speaker 1: about living in this country and living in a country
- 0:05Speaker 1: like ours. It's democratic and it's pretty liberal. We fight,
- 0:09Speaker 1: we protest, we argue, we debate, but unlike most of
- 0:13Speaker 1: the rest of the world, we don't get physical, you know,
- 0:16Speaker 1: we don't go out and kill each other in the
- 0:17Speaker 1: name of our beliefs. We express ourselves and then we
- 0:20Speaker 1: try and find a solution. Look around the world section
- 0:23Speaker 1: of the newspaper this morning, from the Middle East to Africa,
- 0:26Speaker 1: to Europe, to Georgia to parts of America. Even your
- 0:29Speaker 1: seat places falling apart of the seams, or freedom being
- 0:32Speaker 1: crushed into a one thousand tiny pieces. We have in
- 0:35Speaker 1: this country, for the most part, standards about how we
- 0:39Speaker 1: do things. We have boundaries, and that I think was
- 0:44Speaker 1: crossed at the weekend. Protest is taking it too far,
- 0:47Speaker 1: as they did live streaming from outside the personal home
- 0:52Speaker 1: of a member of Parliament, a cabinet minister, their own
- 0:56Speaker 1: personal home where their partner lives with the other children,
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'm sure visit grandchildren, where family friends stop buy for
- 1:04Speaker 1: a cup of tea. It's their sanctuary. Everyone who's got
- 1:07Speaker 1: a home knows what that feels like. You know, they're
- 1:10Speaker 1: family photos on the walls, they've got junk mail in
- 1:12Speaker 1: the door. It's someone's home and some genius thought it
- 1:16Speaker 1: would be a great idea to get a mob outside
- 1:18Speaker 1: a senior minister's home at the weekend, at nighttime and
- 1:22Speaker 1: start yelling. It is not a good idea. It has
- 1:25Speaker 1: never been a good idea, and it never will be.
- 1:28Speaker 1: They published his address. You might think you appear harmless
- 1:34Speaker 1: with your flags and your balaklavas and you're yelling with
- 1:36Speaker 1: your masks on your faces, but not all people outside
- 1:39Speaker 1: of politics share this view. You can look scary, intimidating
- 1:44Speaker 1: and threatening. So please please carry on protesting. We're all
- 1:48Speaker 1: free to do so, but perhaps next time stop and
- 1:51Speaker 1: think about how your actions might be affecting people around you,
- 1:58Speaker 1: people who aren't in politics or making decisions. And I
- 2:02Speaker 1: think actually today you should take a good hard look
- 2:05Speaker 1: in the mirror, get a pen in a paper and
- 2:08Speaker 1: write a letter to that minister to say sorry. For
- 2:13Speaker 1: more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to
