- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we're in Ephesians chapter
- 0:184 and verses #25 through 32, Ephesians 425 through 32.
- 0:24And today we're talking about a change of clothes for you.
- 0:26And you might be like, listen, why do I need a change of
- 0:29clothes? Maybe you're at the age where
- 0:31like, yes, I, I always have to bring a change of clothes with
- 0:34me. Maybe you're a young parent and
- 0:36you have to bring a change of clothes or multiple changes of
- 0:39clothes for your kid wherever they go because they're still
- 0:42trying to learn how to potty train.
- 0:44I may or may not have a daughter in that particular stage right
- 0:46now. We're talking about putting on
- 0:49clothes. We're not talking about a change
- 0:52of clothes physically. This is something spiritually
- 0:57that you have some articles of clothing on right now that need
- 1:02to be taken off. It's not a good look on you and
- 1:06it's not a good look on me. And instead, God has a different
- 1:09wardrobe choice for us that He desires.
- 1:13And so we're going to be looking in these verses.
- 1:15It's just really practical. There's, you know, some some
- 1:19episodes in Ephesians that we've done where it's very
- 1:23theological, it's very doctrinal.
- 1:26This is going to be a crazy practical one.
- 1:30This is here's something you need to do or not do today.
- 1:35And so I'm looking forward to this.
- 1:37Let's read. I'm going to try and read
- 1:40through the whole passage and then go by bit by bit.
- 1:45Verse 25. Therefore, putting away this is
- 1:48taking off, putting away lying. Speak the truth, each one to his
- 1:54neighbor, because we are members of one another.
- 1:57Be angry and do not sin. Don't let the sun go down on
- 2:02your anger and don't give the devil an opportunity.
- 2:06Let the thief no longer steal. Instead he is to do honest work
- 2:11with his own hands so that he has something to share with
- 2:15anyone in need. No foul language should come
- 2:18from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone
- 2:22in need so that it gives grace to those who hear.
- 2:27And don't grieve God's Holy Spirit, you were sealed by Him
- 2:31for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, anger and
- 2:36wrath, shouting and slander be removed from you with along with
- 2:41all malice and be kind and compassionate to one another,
- 2:45forgiving one another just as God also forgave you in Christ.
- 2:51All right, well let's look at these.
- 2:53We have the put off these things and put on these other ones
- 2:58starting off in verse #25 therefore putting away lying.
- 3:03Speak the truth, each one to his neighbor because we are members
- 3:07of one another. God does not want you and I to
- 3:11say things that are untrue, that are false, that are lies.
- 3:16Ways in which we either to save face for our wrongdoing Already
- 3:23we go, OK, well I'll just lie about it.
- 3:25That way they won't know that I failed in this way.
- 3:28God doesn't want you to do that. Sometimes we lie in order to
- 3:32harm someone else. So we might say, Oh yeah, so and
- 3:36so was over that project. That must be why, you know, it
- 3:40went down or have this problem. We might lie against someone
- 3:44else. The term that's used in Exodus
- 3:4720 in the 10 commandments is don't bear false witness against
- 3:52your neighbor. That is in kind of a court
- 3:54setting. Don't lie to the court.
- 3:58Don't speak untruths in such a way as to harm another person.
- 4:04Now, people have come up with kind of a ethical conundrum from
- 4:09time to time, and they've said, all right, well, we're not
- 4:12supposed to lie. Let's say you're back in 1940s
- 4:16Germany and the Nazis come to your house and they ask if you
- 4:20are hiding some Jews. Do you have to tell them the
- 4:24truth because you're a Christian and you're not supposed to lie?
- 4:26No, in that instance, you are not lying in order to harm
- 4:30someone. You are actually protecting
- 4:33someone. You are not giving a person
- 4:36information that is not theirs to know.
- 4:40And so that would not be lying. Or when you have Rahab, that's
- 4:43protecting the lives of the two Hebrew spies.
- 4:47And I think it's Joshua 2. It might be Joshua 3.
- 4:51But as she's protecting these men from the army, the military
- 4:56of the city of Jericho, and she says, oh, I think they went out
- 5:00that way and they headed towards the mountains.
- 5:03What she was doing there, that was not wrong to do.
- 5:07She was actually protecting life.
- 5:09She was not causing there to be death or harm to a person.
- 5:16So we put a way, lying. What's the opposite of that?
- 5:19Speak the truth, each one to his neighbor.
- 5:22Be honest with other people. I think of many of the proverbs
- 5:26one that comes to mind at the moment is open rebuke is better
- 5:30than secret love that if you are honest with a person that has so
- 5:35much more value and weight than if you're like, Oh yeah, I quote
- 5:40UN quote love him on the inside. But I'm never going to tell them
- 5:44when anything that they've done like hurts me or hurt other
- 5:47people. And so I'm just going to keep
- 5:49allowing them to self self destruct in in their
- 5:56relationships with other people. And I just won't say anything
- 5:59because it be too awkward to say anything.
- 6:00No, speak the truth with your neighbor.
- 6:04Be honest with one another. Why would we be honest and why
- 6:08would we not lie to each other? The end of verse 25 says because
- 6:12we are members of one another, because we're part of the same
- 6:15body. And if you know, my eyes are
- 6:19lying to the rest of my body and they say, OK, there's no Cliff
- 6:24there, you can keep on walking. Well then I'm going to go off a
- 6:27Cliff. You can think there's several
- 6:30different, like medical problems that happen when you can't trust
- 6:34your eyes or when you know the sensory things in your hands or
- 6:39your fingers where you can't feel anything anymore.
- 6:43You know, you can think about people that they don't have
- 6:45feeling in whatever part of their body.
- 6:47They accidentally put that body part onto a hot stove or
- 6:51something, and they can be really, really harmed because
- 6:54their body isn't sending the signal.
- 6:58It's not talking to the rest of the body.
- 7:00So we tell the truth to each other because we need to have
- 7:04communication in order to be part of the same body.
- 7:10I, I think that'll suffice for, for verse 25.
- 7:12Then verse 26, not only put away lying and put on speaking the
- 7:16truth, put off, take off the clothing of being angry and we
- 7:23choose instead not to let the sun go down on your anger.
- 7:26I'll give the caveat here. It says be angry and do not sin.
- 7:31There is an anger that's a recognition that wrong has been
- 7:36done, and so there needs to be resolution.
- 7:39That's OK. When you feel angry as a result
- 7:44of wrong that has been done, that's OK.
- 7:47But you actually have to do the thing with that anger that God
- 7:52made you to do with it, which is 'cause there to be resolution.
- 7:58And if there is not resolution, then that's a problem.
- 8:03And this is what he says. Don't let the sun go down on
- 8:08your anger and don't give the devil an opportunity when you
- 8:13have just perpetual anger and rage, especially against another
- 8:18brother or sister in the Lord or someone in your family or
- 8:21someone at your job, unresolved anger gives the devil an
- 8:27opportunity. And so here what Paul says is
- 8:31don't allow, don't allow anger to turn into hatred, rage, or
- 8:40bitterness. Anger is a momentary thing.
- 8:44It's intended to be, but when it finds no resolution, when you
- 8:48haven't squared it away with the other person, it can then result
- 8:53in you festering on that. And anger held within you is a
- 8:59poison that spills out onto all sorts of other people.
- 9:04And so we'll we'll see a little bit of that even in upcoming
- 9:07verses. So be angry, That's fine, but
- 9:12bring resolution, like let your anger move you to a specific
- 9:17action that you can take. And if you can't take an action,
- 9:20you have to release the anger. Don't sin in doing so.
- 9:25Don't shout, don't curse at people, don't yell at people,
- 9:33don't spread slanderous words, don't degrade others with your
- 9:38language or with what you say about them or their motives.
- 9:41Those are all ways to sin when you are angry.
- 9:45When you're angry, the solution is always talk to the person.
- 9:51That's what Christ has modeled for us.
- 9:54That's what he has instructed us to do.
- 9:57There's not another option. Like when you're angry with
- 10:00someone, either resolve it with them as soon as humanly possible
- 10:06or let it go. Those are the two options.
- 10:09Then verse #28 let the thief no longer steal.
- 10:12So don't lie. Don't have like, hatred.
- 10:16You can even think back to the Sermon on the Mount.
- 10:19Those that hold hatred or disdain in the heart for another
- 10:24have killed someone in their heart.
- 10:26So don't lie. Don't murder in your heart.
- 10:30Don't steal. This is verse 28.
- 10:32Let the thief no longer steal. Instead, he is to do honest work
- 10:37with his own hands so that he has something to share with
- 10:40anyone in need. When we work, we work for a
- 10:45purpose. We do honest work with our own
- 10:47hands so that we have something to share.
- 10:51If you work a job, God has given you that job, yes, to meet your
- 10:55needs. But then so that you can share
- 10:57with others who are in need, whether that's people in need of
- 11:01the gospel and we give to our local churches, whether that's a
- 11:04person that's in need of some local necessity.
- 11:08And you might partner with like a, you know, Ronald McDonald
- 11:10House or another that might be like that, that you're able to
- 11:15help people where they're at. Maybe if your local city has
- 11:20some programs to be able to help out people with physical,
- 11:25tangible needs, but maybe other members within your church that
- 11:30are in financial need. When you work you, God gives you
- 11:35what He deems necessary both for your survival and to bless and
- 11:42to benefit and to share with others.
- 11:44That's the reason for our money. We work.
- 11:48We don't steal so that we have something to share.
- 11:51Verse #30 Actually 29 no foul language should come out of your
- 11:57mouth. Your foul language.
- 11:59This would be what he's going to talk about in chapter 5 as like
- 12:04filthy talk, foolish talking, crude joking.
- 12:08This would be inappropriate. Often sexual language would fall
- 12:15a lot under this as well as much of what's involved in like
- 12:21cursing nowadays is language intended to tear down other
- 12:28people or to demean them. I'll, I'll probably go into that
- 12:33a little bit more in a second. This would also involve
- 12:38blasphemy. So using the name of Jesus as a
- 12:42curse word. This would be like a Oh my God
- 12:46as just a flippant exclamation that's not reverencing who God
- 12:51is or having respect for that name and how you're using it.
- 12:55Is it just a filler? Is it just an exclamation in
- 12:58your life? So don't do that.
- 13:00Don't have foul language. Don't have have crude joking.
- 13:05Don't have cursing within your language.
- 13:07Don't blasphemy. Don't use the name of God
- 13:10flippantly or or as a curse says.
- 13:14No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what
- 13:17is good for building up someone in need so that it gives grace
- 13:22to those who hear. I'll say this, this envelops
- 13:29more than people think. So they OK, I'm a Christian so
- 13:33there's you know, 10 words on the no no list that I can't say
- 13:38and like 2 topics that I can't say and everything else is fine
- 13:41for me. No, we are only to say what is
- 13:44good for building up someone in need so that it gives grace to
- 13:51those who hear. Do other people, when they hear
- 13:55you talking, are they built up? Are they encouraged, Are they
- 13:59challenged to do what is right? Are they equipped?
- 14:02Are they better equipped for what God wants for them to do?
- 14:06Grace, the power of God on their life.
- 14:09That is what we are called to talk about.
- 14:12Can I tell you that is not something that just comes from
- 14:16human behavior. None of these things that we've
- 14:18talked about are something that can just come from the human
- 14:21nature. The whole point is this only
- 14:24comes from the new nature that we have been given by the Lord.
- 14:29And so because of this new nature that we have, because we
- 14:33are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, because Jesus dwells in our
- 14:36hearts by faith, as we learned in chapter three, we have the
- 14:41ability to shut up and to say only the things that will
- 14:46encourage and uplift others. All be transparent with you
- 14:52guys. We're we're 14 minutes and we're
- 14:54almost at the end of the episode.
- 14:55A lot of our political talk as Christians does not it it it
- 15:04does not filter through this well.
- 15:07We speak things to demean others, to degrade them, to drag
- 15:13them down, to impugn motives, to describe as subhuman or demonic
- 15:20people made in the image of God, loved and bought by Jesus
- 15:24Christ, that we are called to show care and love for.
- 15:30And we should not be like the world in how we talk.
- 15:36This is I'll shoot straight with you guys.
- 15:39This is something that I I know that Donald Trump did not start
- 15:47much of the just vulgar evil language that is often used.
- 15:54It's foul language that is used in politics these days that then
- 16:00many other people are are doing. The advent of social media
- 16:04brought a lot of this on. Even hearing about Richard Nixon
- 16:09back in the day and the shock that came from Watergate when
- 16:13people heard the president of the United States use the F
- 16:17word. Whereas nowadays, not in some,
- 16:21you know, behind the scenes, closed doors, our current
- 16:25president in live television is cursing.
- 16:30It is a filthy, foul language and that, that that has no place
- 16:36in the child of God. Don't talk like our politicians.
- 16:40Don't talk like the people that are in your workplace.
- 16:44Talk in such a way that people go, wow, every time I'm around
- 16:48them. They're not complaining, they're
- 16:49not whining. They're not angry about
- 16:51everything. They just encourage me.
- 16:54They build me up, they invite me to church, they remind me that
- 16:57God loves me. They tell me encouraging things
- 17:00that happen. They they are happy about the
- 17:03life that they lead and the church family that they have and
- 17:08what God is doing in and through them.
- 17:12Like let's have that reputation. Let's have good language to
- 17:16build up others in need. Then verse 30, don't grieve
- 17:19God's Holy Spirit. You were sealed by him for the
- 17:23day of redemption. You can make the Holy Spirit sad
- 17:28through how you live, through telling him to shut up, that
- 17:31you're not going to talk to that person, you're not going to
- 17:34share that you're not going to forgive, you're not going to,
- 17:38you know, church this weekend. Don't grieve God's Holy Spirit.
- 17:42He is prompting you to do what God wants you to.
- 17:46So listen to him, Obey him as as one of my pastors growing up
- 17:52would say, obey every impulse of the Holy Spirit, that everything
- 17:56that God's Spirit leads you to do.
- 17:58How do I know what God's Spirit wants me to do?
- 18:00Know the Word of God because that's how the Holy Spirit, the
- 18:02Holy Spirit uses the word of God to make the child of God more
- 18:05like the Son of God. So listen to him, don't grieve
- 18:09him. He is the seal, the protection
- 18:13on you until the day that God receives you to Himself.
- 18:18So love, cherish, obey the Holy Spirit.
- 18:22Then verse 31, let all bitterness, anger and wrath,
- 18:25shouting and slander be removed from you along with all malice.
- 18:29Talked about this a little bit earlier.
- 18:31Bitterness, anger that you held onto and you've never let it go.
- 18:36Anger, just a perpetual, perpetual anger.
- 18:42Not, you know, angry for a moment that brings resolution
- 18:46that then you're able to release it, or anger that you can't
- 18:49resolve anything about and so you choose to release it.
- 18:53Bad anger is anger. You hold on to that, that stays
- 18:58for days and days and days and days.
- 19:00Then you have wrath. This would be rage.
- 19:02It's it's outrage against someone.
- 19:04You have just a visceral reaction.
- 19:07That's not good, that's not godly.
- 19:09So let all bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander,
- 19:13speaking evil of others, may it be removed from you, along with
- 19:17all malice, any heart intent to do someone wrong.
- 19:22Verse 32 And be kind and compassionate to one another,
- 19:27forgiving one another just as God also forgave you in Christ.
- 19:32Be kind. Seek to do good to others and
- 19:35their compassion. Seek to understand where they're
- 19:38come, where they're coming from, have a love for them and the
- 19:42desire to see them walk with God and to have a good relationship
- 19:47with those around them, including you, as you seek to
- 19:50become kind to others and to be compassionate.
- 19:54They are going to fail you. They're going to hurt you.
- 19:57And so God, Paul here tells us, forgive one another.
- 20:01Then in those moments when you've been kind, you've been
- 20:04compassionate and they don't return the favor.
- 20:06He says forgive them. Don't forgive them because they
- 20:09deserve it. He says forgive them just as God
- 20:12also forgave you. In Christ.
- 20:15We do what we do. We we put away lying to speak
- 20:18truth. We are only temporarily angry,
- 20:22not sinning, refusing to let anger fester within us.
- 20:27We don't steal. Instead we work honestly so we
- 20:30can share with others. We don't speak foul language,
- 20:33but we speak encouraging, building up language.
- 20:36We don't grieve God's Holy Spirit, and we put away all of
- 20:41these various ways of being angry and and hateful and mean
- 20:47to other people in order to be kind and compassionate because
- 20:51that's how God treats us. He treats us with truth.
- 20:55He treats us with not perpetual anger.
- 20:57He has given to us. He has spoken good words,
- 21:01building up words to us that have given us grace.
- 21:03He's given us His Holy Spirit. He has been kind to us.
- 21:08And so we do everything we do in response to how God has treated
- 21:12us. We don't do any of these things
- 21:14because someone else deserves or doesn't deserve it.
- 21:17We do all of these because that is how God has modeled this new
- 21:22way of life. So take off the old ratty
- 21:24clothes and put on this new life in Christ.
- 21:28Put on the beautiful robe that God has for you, a robe that
- 21:33looks like the robe that Jesus has.
- 21:35The way that he lives his life is the way we're called to live
- 21:38ours. Thanks for tuning in today.
- 21:40Tomorrow we'll start in chapter #5 See you then.
