- 1:29SPEAKER_00: My guest today is Medium, writer, biometrical engineer, Olive Gnali.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Hi!
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: How are you doing?
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: I'm good.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: How are you?
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: I'm good, thanks.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: You were you you were telling me off air you just got back last night or yesterday.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I got back yesterday from uh visiting my parents in Utah.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: I was there I ended up being there for a month, which is both.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: You were there a month.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I didn't even expect I was expecting to be there for two weeks, and then um I came out to them and it I wasn't disowned, so then I just stayed an extra week, and then my roommate in LA got a bacterial infection that's contagious, so then I stayed another extra week.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it was fun.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: Um it was like very peaceful and like clean and like there wasn't random yelling or explosions uh like there is in my place in you in LA.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: So is LA that bad?
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: Um I live in downtown LA, but it's like it gets pretty like um like wild, especially since like last year there were like fireworks every night, there's like drag racing at night near my place.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: So it's just like it's just very loud.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: So imagine you live in like the the area where the like the fast and the furious is.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I just every once I just wake up at like 3 a.m.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: and I keep because I keep hearing somebody go, We're family.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: But you um yeah, because we was we originally scheduled this and like then you uh for a while ago, it must have been I can't believe that's a month ago now, but like they then you were like, oh no, yeah you're like I'm leaving to go, I'm leaving to go away, and then it's not that I because I still worked there like full time, I was still doing everything, but like the week that I think we had it scheduled, I had like eight things do.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: It's just weird doing comedy because you just don't know like when you'll have audition.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: I had like I think I had like two or three auditions that week, and then I had my regular writing job on Love It or Leave It, and then I had like packets due or something.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: It was wild, but it was a lot, yeah.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: So I was just like, I'm so I I was supposed to plug our friend Gator Gator's Daily.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: I was supposed to like I got merch from him the same week that I was supposed to do your podcast, and I just I just posted the merch like this week.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: So it was like, I yeah, sometimes I'm just like I can't do I just can't do it.
- 3:56SPEAKER_02: I can't do it right now.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: And then by the time this comes out, it'd be even like further down the line that it's promoting you're promoting that merch.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so you've um you've come on today to talk about a movie that I'd never seen before, somehow.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, I was so shocked that you hadn't seen it.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: It's never classic.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I watched it for the first time last night, but it was it's hocus pocus.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: Yes, it was so good.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: I wonder if it's like more of a American classic and other people don't care about it, but it was No, it's not because all of my friends love it as well.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: Oh really?
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: And I just I just never somehow never seen it, even though it was constantly on.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: I just like never got around to watching it.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: It was always on.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I was on like Disney a lot growing up.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it was on Disney um all the time.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: But like I don't remember I don't remember the first time I watched it, but I've definitely watched it like several times.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: I hadn't watched it um in recent years until today when I was prepping for this.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: But it was I don't know, it's just so good.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: It's like I was surprised it didn't do well, you know, because everybody knows it's like.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Because I really enjoyed it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: It's but it's a certain type of movie, like it's not meant to be like if you're putting it up against like a Scorsese film, like what do you like, what are you gonna expect?
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: It's a it's a children's movie about witches.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: What a children's movie, a children's movie about witches in which they use the word virgin like 70 times.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 5:51SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: That's another that's one that's one thing uh we'll talk about.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Um it's one of the more interesting aspects of the movie.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Uh the fact that it's in a Disney movie itself is just wild.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: Um back then we could say anything on Disney.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Literally, like I was so I recently did Goodburger as well.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: Oh hell yeah.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: Did you know that did you know there's a novelization of Goodburger, which I have read?
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: What?
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: I think there's like I wish I'd knew that.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: I think there's a novelization of Goodburger and there and like Shazam, what was it, Shazam?
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: No, Kazam?
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: The one yeah, everybody calls it Shazam though because we had that mass hysteria or whatever.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: But like, yeah, I think I read both of those books after seeing the movie when I was a kid.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: One thing I did come to realize um is that um what's his name?
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Uh the one everyone thinks is in Kazam.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, uh Sinbad.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Sinbad, yes, thank you.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Sinbad.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: He's in both movies.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Uh not in both movies.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: He's in he's in um Shaq's in both movies, but uh Sinbad is in Good Burger.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: So I'm wondering if that's where the mix-up came from.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: That's weird.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because they came out around the same time as well.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, probably.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: That's so funny though that everybody just had that mix up.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: I for sure did, but like Oh, did you really?
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I really thought I thought that Sinbad was and I thought it was called Shazam.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: I don't know, it was uh it was weird.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: But I'm glad I'm not the only one that can be easily influenced by fake news.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: That's that's one of the things that I was definitely like, no, that was definitely Shaq.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: I remember Shaq being in it endless.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: It's also like a huge difference in terms of personality, size, demeanor.
- 7:45SPEAKER_02: Like, how the fuck did we think this?
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Didn't they think he was a sailor in Shazam as well, and not even a genie?
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Oh really?
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: I don't remember that part.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Something like that.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's just because Sinbad Sinbad wears earrings, right?
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's why.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: But um, but yeah, Hocus Pocus.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: How much so you said you saw it uh quite a few times as a kid.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Do you remember did you see it when it came out?
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: I don't remember because I that was like what 93 or something?
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: 93, yeah.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: No, I was like four.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: Um uh I mean not born yet.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: That's how old I was.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: Uh Hollywood.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: No, um, I don't remember, I just remember seeing it on TV, and I don't even remember seeing it the I don't remember the time that I saw it the full way through, but I know that I have before, and then I would see like different parts of it because you would just catch it on.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, it was so fun.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: It was like those the way the witches were portrayed and cast were like perfect.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: It was excellent.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: And I love cats, I love pets.
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: So I like it.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: The cat in it is also uh went on to be used in Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: The same cat?
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's an animatronic, and it went on to be used in Sabrina's teenage witch.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: I'm just glad somebody's getting work in Hollywood, you know?
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I'm just I mean it's a robot.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: An animal of color is getting work, and I'm just proud of it, you know?
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: If we can't get work, then at least that cat.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that cat will live forever.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, poor cat now.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Um but it's so uh when was the last time you saw it other than before today?
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Do you remember what it looks like?
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: I have no idea.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: I can't remember.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: My roommates though, literally like a month or two ago, my roommates were watching it in the in the living interest.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I had I had work to do, but my roommates were like watching it in the living room.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: So I was like, Was that before you picked it or was that?
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was before I picked it.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, so is that what inspired you then?
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: No, I just I love I love that movie and I was really surprised it was on the list.
- 9:44SPEAKER_02: Um so I yeah, so I was just like, what?
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, obviously.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: I knew I would want to rewatch it.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: So I've had it like near the top of the list the entire time, and I thought it would be picked like n almost instantly because so many people talk about it online.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And it's take it's literally taken until you it's taken like 50 something episodes to get picked.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: I think um I I kind of I had a moment of regret after picking it, and I'll tell you why.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: But I think it's because I think people don't pick it because we've all seen it and we all love it, and we all talk about it already.
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: So then it's like, what more can be said, you know?
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: Like if there was a different movie that I hadn't seen or was like less familiar with, and I that's like an excuse to watch it for this.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: But I was like, there's no like you have to this has to be on the episode, like there has to be an episode of this.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: I know I cannot believe that it took so long to get picked.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Same with same with Goodburger, Goodburger took a long time to get picked as well.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: And it's like, well, so many people love that movie.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it would be like someone picking, like, this is not at all the same, but I think it would be like kind of like someone picking like a Marvel movie or something that like everybody has seen and knows already, and it's like, okay, like let's pick something else that has something that we like there isn't such an agreement about.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: That's definitely probably what it is.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Uh because again, I I saw it for the first time last night and I loved it.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: I had so much fun watching this.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: I had so much fun watching this movie.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's I'm glad to hear that because like I'm I'm glad it's not just nostalgia, you know?
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: I'm glad that you like it as it is.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: No, it there's definitely moments that I'm like, oof, that doesn't hold up, but I want to hear about those.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: I mean it's main mainly the virgin stuff.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so like to describe the plot for anyone who hasn't seen it, it's basically a movie where um set in Salem, Massachusetts, uh these witches um kind of they how how to explain it?
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: They they basically get uh they they like try they try to get younger um by like sucking the soul or the life force out of children, and so they do it to this one girl named Emily, who's the younger sister of uh was it Thackeray?
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: Um he goes by Binks.
- 12:04SPEAKER_02: Thackeray, yeah.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Thackeray Binks.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Thackeray Binks, he goes by Binks later, but um uh and uh they get away with it um and but then uh are like hanged right after.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: So they make they make Emily like old and withered and take her life force and her brother Thak Thackeray can't do it.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: They yeah, they kill her.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Um and then they and they get younger and and then Thackeray uh couldn't save her, and then they hang they hang the witches, but not before they turn Thackeray into a cat that we now refer to as Binx, a black cat.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Um and they get and because of like because they get hanged and like turn in and oh no, sorry, they cast a spell as they're about to be as they're about to be hanged, and they um it's a it's a spell that will resurrect them during the full moon on all Hallows Eve um when any virgin lights a black flame candle.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: And uh one of the many instances they refer to virgins.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: Um and basically nothing happens for three hundred years, but uh Binx kind of has to survive that whole time and he guards the house, making sure like nobody Yeah, as the cat.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Uh so like 300 years later, uh these guys from this family from LA move to Salem, and uh the boy Max takes his sister out trickle treating and they light a candle and He lights the candle, he he's an LA dude who doesn't believe in this witch shit.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: Yes, he doesn't believe in it.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: And then he lights the candle to impress a girl, which is the biggest plot hole because he has to admit he's a virgin in doing so.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: He was like so he's like, should I light this candle?
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, bro, you're just saying you haven't fucked to this girl that you like.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: What are you but I mean, how old is he supposed to be in this movie?
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: He's a teen.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: He's a teen, but I don't know any like teenage boy that would be like openly like I'm a virgin to that with that arrogance to the girl that he likes.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: But I think it I don't think there's anything wrong with being a virgin, I think it's perfectly fine.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: But that was like watching a a a male of the species do that, I was like, that's not that was the biggest slot hole.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: It's not the track, yeah.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Um that's funny.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: That was that was your one takeaway of that thing.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: I was like, from that whole movie, I was like boys don't do that.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Guys, uh, you definitely wouldn't have said that.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: But any but I was thinking like, oh, they're so young, it doesn't it doesn't make a difference.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: I thought they were like 13 or something.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're pretty young.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: No, he's in they're in high school, right?
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: Like I thought I don't know.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: I think that that they're in high school, so they're I think he was like at least at least probably like 15 or wasn't it 16 or something like that?
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: Then it starts to get a bit like, oh yeah, you probably wouldn't do that in front of a girl.
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think if you're like I think if you're like 14 or whatever, it doesn't matter, but I think like as guys get into high school, they and he was he was trying to impress her in the first scene, so that's why.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, and he's very cocky in the in the start.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: He slowly gets like less like confident character development, perhaps a little bit, a little bit, but he gets less confident as he goes on, which is interesting.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Um he but yeah, he's very cocky, um but then there's also like these school bullies as well.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Not school bullies, but like bullies in the area um who kind of are like the ones against him, and the reason he has to like take his sister out, not the reason he has to take his sister out, the reason that he's like angry with his sister.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Sister also played by Thora Birch, I wanted to add.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: A very, very young Thora Birch, um like eight years old.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: But it's um but basically like the the whole thing is that the the witches come back and chaos ensues.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Um Yeah.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: So they come back and they like uh chase him around, they resurrect a dead man to fight for them, and then they the best scene, the best scene is the I'll put a spell on you song when they like they like run to their parents who are at a party and their mom's dressed like Madonna and their dad's dressed like a dead Dracula.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: Um and I don't know, I said oh he called himself Dead Kila when they were like dad.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: Um and then they start singing, like, and so uh Max tries to like warn everybody, but then they pretend it's an introduction for them to sing I'll put a spell on you, which is brilliant.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: That was like a brilliant thing to put in the movie.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: It's purely to get Beth Midler to sing, yeah.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Is all that's there for.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: Why would you have Beth Middler in a movie and not have her sing?
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: That's like it's incredible.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: It was so good.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: So the three the th also the three witches are Beth Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathena Jimmy.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Kathena Jimmy is like she fucking kills it in everything.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: And I like I don't think she's like she's been in so many things, and I don't think people like I don't know, I just like I love her at everything she's ever done.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: She was in I I did I recently did um Sister Act 2 on this podcast and she was in that and again so funny in that.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Killed it.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: And yeah, she just she's so good in everything she's in.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and but I feel like she kind of gets um the weakest uh kind of like the least to do in this movie.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the least to do out of the three of them.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Well, because Beth Midler is like the head head uh HWIC, head witch in charge, and then um Sarah Jessica Parker is the hot one that ushered in uh most of my male peers uh sexuality.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: And then um no, this is a thing.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: People are like, I saw Sarah Jessica Parker, and I was like, oh my god, really?
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, in Hocus Pocus specifically.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: Like I've seen that like many tweets and and this is a whole discourse.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: And then Kathy Najimi is like the comic relief, right?
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: Like she and she's like very she's I think that's what she's meant to be.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: Um Sarah Jessica Parker is like the sexy comic relief, I would say as well, though.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: They're both like yeah, they're both comic relief, but I think like I think like when Kathy pulled out the vacuum cleaner, like that's come on.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: There's like I think she's more like physical comedy, and like uh she she I I don't know, she it's you always have to have in like Cinderella, they had like the two stepsisters and like one like pushing each other out of the way, and so they were like competitive as well.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: So they had that thing going on here too.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: It reminded me a lot of like the the fam the step family from Cinderella because I watched the stuff.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's very true thinking about that now.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: I didn't really think about that.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's actually very accurate, especially like if you think about the um the ones in uh Cinderella story, uh the two of them, it feels very much.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Oh really?
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen that.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: I was thinking the the brandy one.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: Um I haven't seen that in so many years.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: That one I watch regularly because it is a movie.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: It was it was perfect, it's another perfect movie.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: I need to check well, that's really actually.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so this one basically like it's uh one thing that I found kind of like interesting because Sarah Jessica Parker wasn't even uh like originally like I I saw that originally there were like a load of people that were considered for these roles and I think I read that Yeah Sarah Sandler Yeah, so it would be Jennifer Lopez auditioned for that role.
- 19:36SPEAKER_02: Whoa, that would have been a very different wish.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: And Rosie O'Donnell was offered Bet Midler's role and turned it down.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: I think it was better this way.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: I think it was much better this way.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: I don't know, but uh that's interesting.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: And Cloris Leechman was the producer's first choice for her.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: For for Beth Midler's role?
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: Oh wow, that would have been very, very different.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: That's those are very different movies.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Wait, we didn't finish the plot though.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, we well we finished the the the synopsis for it.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: We'll go through the um but yeah, it's interesting because there's also like cameos.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: There's some like fun cameos in it from like uh Gary and Penny Marshall as husband and wife, some some reason.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was weird.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: I was like, aren't they related?
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Well, it's a nice callback for like uh because Bet Midler worked with Gary Marshall on uh Beaches.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Oh really?
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, he directed her in that and like got her Oscar.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: I remember that movie.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: That was really intense.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: I've never seen it.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: I watched that movie, I think, with my mom or something, but like Wind Beneath, I was obsessed with Wind Beneath my wings.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: Like I would literally just like I would be like at school just like singing it to myself.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: Like it was just like weird.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: I was like, I know, I was a child.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's so tragic, isn't it?
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: I was like, but I like I loved that song.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: I loved Beth Midler.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Um now she's kind of weird.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: But were you a Bet Mid were you aware of Beth Midler before we watched this then?
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Or was that like um I don't know what you're doing?
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: Or did you grow to like her before uh like after watching this?
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: I I think I knew I'm like having flashbacks to memories I had fully blocked out.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: Um I think I knew I think I knew her before this because I'm I'm remembering back to like first grade and like walking around singing that song.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: So like I think I I think I knew her song at least, at least her voice before yeah um this.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: But yeah.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: I don't even know if I like put together that that was the same I it mu I must have known.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: I must have known, but on some level you probably knew, but like maybe not fully aware.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Another thing was um Sarah Jessica Parker and Beth Midler co starred together.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Oh no, this is this this was after.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: It says in the first wives club, but um Sarah Jessica Parker played the younger woman Bet Midler's husband left her for.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: Scandal.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: And then the boy in it, oh so he it's his name is where is it?
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: I just saw it.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: I I looked him up, Omri.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Omri Katz.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: So he was he went on to be in Freaks and Geeks as a bully.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: Wait, what?
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, I have to look this up now.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: I don't remember that at all.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: He was, I'm pretty sure he was the guy with the shaved head.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: Or like short head, like the buzz cart.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: No, he wasn't.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: He was only in one s one episode.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Who am I thinking of then?
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: Sorry, I got that completely wrong.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: He plays someone called Brad in one of the episodes.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: No idea who that is.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Never mind.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: But he but he didn't really go on to do a whole lot.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, I mean, maybe.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: Maybe you just felt like doing something else.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: He had a whole movie career as a child.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, he now works as a hairdresser in LA.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: You could go meet him.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: I could go meet him.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: He said it says he stays in touch with his hocus pocus co-stars.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: But he has like he has like filmography from 80.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, he was on a he was on 149 episodes of Dallas.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: Like this man had a Yeah, he had a full acting career.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: He was in a lot.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: And he was what John Ross human son.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: He must have been the son, I guess.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: No idea.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: JR's son?
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: No idea.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: I've I never watched Dallas.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: I think my parents did.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: I didn't watch it, but I like I'm aware that John Ross is JR.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: So like I that must be the son.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, I see.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: That's fascinating.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Um so how old he would have been 16, 17 when he was filming it.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: Um it's funny that that's like the thing that he's known for, is this like Disney film.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: But it is Yeah, it's it's weird, isn't it?
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: Um but I think that's like that's the power of Disney.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: That's the power of those movies that are imprinted into our minds forever.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's because I also looked up Allison to see what she was up to, and she she kind of like left acting for a little bit as well.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: Like she's back acting now, but she was she does very like small roles in things.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Except for like she had like a 10-episode thing in Ray Donovan.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: But yeah, I remember her being in Forty Days and Forty Nights.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: Uh she's in Eyes Wide Shut, and then she kind of just like not really done a whole lot.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: She is gorgeous.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: She's it looks like she's been in more um films and TV than than uh Omri, but Omri Richard.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, definitely.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: And then we had like and then the third one is Dora Birch, who just went on to like just be a I mean, after American Beauty, she went on to do like so many things.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, she was in American beauty.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: She was the girl in American Beauty.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: And she's in Ghost Worlds.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: Oh shit.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: I didn't put that together.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: No.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: This is like my mind, my mind is being blown right now.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: Holy shit, she's done a lot.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: Um, damn.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: I didn't realize she was American Beauty because I watched I was like, I was obsessed with that movie when I was a kid, or when I was like when it came out.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because I knew this guy who was like all deep and shit, just like plastic bag dude, and he was really into it, and I was just like, okay, and then like and then I thought it was like a deep movie, and then later I was like, what the fuck just happened in that movie?
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: That's a movie that does not hold up.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: I will say that now.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: I well, first of all, Kevin Spacey's in it.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: So um Kevin Spacey, and then the whole like thing around it is just like it the whole plot plot around it is like Yeah, it's it's fucking creepy, but um uh I I didn't realize she was that girl.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: That's wild.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: Well, um congratulations on your career, uh Thorbridge.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: Um so let's let's go through uh the movie then.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: We'll talk it'll talk about it properly then and kind of uh you can tell me like what you enjoyed from it as we talk about it.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: And it's so like again it opens with basically this girl Emily has gone missing in the in the 1600s, it must be.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, because it's 300 years, so 1693.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: Um and she's gone missing in Salem, Massachusetts, and the first thing I wrote down, so the the brother is Binx.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: Uh and he's trying to find her, and he's like clawing out to her.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: And I the first thing I wrote down is this boy cannot act because he is he's really bad from what I wasn't really looking at the movie from an acting skill perspective.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: No, but it's the way he's calling out to her, and I'm like, oh, this is the opening.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: And I was like, maybe this is maybe this is gonna be bad.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: Do you know why?
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I was thinking though?
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: I was I was like watching it and I was looking at him, and I'm like, he's not like particularly like his he I don't know, he doesn't like stand out as like an actor or whatever, but like his voice, like they had to use him for that voice is is what carries throughout the film, right?
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: That voice is incredible.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: It's not.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: It's not it's not his voice.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: It's not his voice.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: What's not his voice when it's the cat?
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: I will tell you who's the voice when it's the cat, and it's gonna blow your mind.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: No, really?
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: Why did I pick that actor then?
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: I have no idea.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: It's Max from a goofy movie.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, oh that person is getting bank.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: Wait, which one?
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: Um, okay, so Jason Jason Marsden.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Jason Marsden, yeah.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: Is this like James Marsden's brother?
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: No, I don't think he is.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: I think he's just some guy.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, he's done so much stuff.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's a voiceover actor.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: Voiceover actors, it's like super fucking competitive.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: But and but it's super fucking competitive, so it's like really hard to get into it.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: So if you like get in and you you get paid.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: And then you barely I did like a little bit of voice acting, and it's so fun and so easy.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: Like, you don't have to wear any clothes.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Like you can just like sit in your bed and do it.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, you probably should because sometimes they uh help direct you, but uh but that's awesome.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: What did your voice what did your voice over on?
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: Um I just did a book um with Audible.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: Like my friend had me auditioned to to do her book, and then I've done like um the skin cancer foundation.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: I did like I got to go to a beach in San Diego and they put up a mirror and they had people come up to it, and I had to get people to come up and talk to the mirror.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: I was like the mirror, so they couldn't see me, but I was like improvising and like tell getting people to like check themselves and stuff and pro do preventative things and make them more aware.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: It was super fun, and everybody I worked with was like really fun.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, it was I love not having to look good.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: I like that's the biggest oh that's such a big annoyance for me is like having to like like when I do auditions to like have know that I'm gonna be like my face is gonna be on film.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: Uh like I just don't I like much prefer to talk my ass off or like write a bunch of shit.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, I'll do I don't know.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: Acting's fun, but it's just like it it's weird self-perception.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: And then like makeup and stuff, I'm like, I gotta get my contacts and do all this stuff.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: But voice acting, you just sit there and you just talk and it's great.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: But is that do you find that different to stand up then?
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Because you kind of have to like what what's the difference there?
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: With um with uh like being perceived is do you mean?
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Um do you like dress up for that or anything?
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: It really depends.
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: Like when I there are just times where I'll like go th it depends on the place for me and like what how big of a show it is, but also like it just depends on like how I feel.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: Like I've at the very beginning, I like there were people who were like, Oh, you you know, as a woman, like you have to wear certain things, you don't want to distract from your jokes, and I was like, fuck that, I'll just write better jokes, you know.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: So I like I would wear like shitty clothes and then like I would dress all the way up sometimes, and I would just like it just depended on how I felt and like what show I was doing and stuff, and um yeah, so like and it's so I don't know why, but for me, like um performing improv, like I won't dress up as much.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: I think it's probably because like I need to move around and stuff too.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: Um I'm the same, but like stand-up I move around a quite a bit too, but I can still like kind of do like I've like I climb into the crowd and stuff with stand-up, yeah.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: Like I used to, now I probably won't eat off people's plates anymore.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: Um but like like people have straight up just given me their drinks and stuff, and I used to like drink it while I was on stage.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: But I'm not doing that anymore.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: No probably shouldn't have done that back then, but whatever.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: Um uh but yeah, so like I don't know, with stand-up, I I I think it's like good to like I you also have like command of the room, right?
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: So it's like it doesn't it it really it shouldn't matter what you look like.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: Obviously you have to take that into account when you're like a uh you being aware of like the crowd and whatever.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: But like um I I don't know, I feel like you have more control, it's your words, it's your voice.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: But with acting, you're like trying to be somebody you know, you're trying to feel the emotions of somebody else, but like uh and it's not your lines.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: So that's like the that's the biggest uh confidence uh killer is having to like memorize other lines.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: But yep.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: That's what yeah, that's how long have you done improv for actually at interest?
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Um I've done stand-up for four years and I've done improv for three.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: Um but I've been around improv before that.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: My ex did improv a lot.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Um, and I uh was that supportive improv girlfriend.
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: Um and but now like but I started improv to get better at stand-up and it worked.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: So that was cool.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: I started improv to get better at writing and it worked as well.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: Oh nice, awesome.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: It's been six years.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: Oh wow, that's cool.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: Do you do stand-up as well?
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: No, I'm just about to like properly get into it.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: Cool.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: That's awesome.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: Working on it.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm trying to do a few shows here and there, but like I haven't started it properly.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: It's a big it's a big thing.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: A big undertaking.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: It feels like a lot more work then.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: That's why I liked improv as well, because it was like no work.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: You just show off on the day.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I like I I do like, you know, sometimes I'm like, oh, like mus music is so awesome, and it really is, but like one thing that's nice about stand-up is you literally just like show up with your thoughts, but you still or like a notebook, and then improv you show up with nothing.
- 32:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: You're just like it would be untrue to the art if I prepared it all.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: So that's fun.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Where did you train?
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: Or like did you train for improv?
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: Um, UCB, and then and I was like on a mess hall team there, and then I um was on a house team at Second City, but I don't know if I'm still on a house team at Second City because I was like also trying out for the Herald um right before the pandemic hit at UCB, and then Herald Teams, and then yeah, and we were we were performing regularly at Second City, and I don't know what's gonna come back.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't like none of us know what's happening.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: I know the like the the uh New York scene a little bit better, so like I know that well, at least with the UCB, it doesn't seem like anything's happen like it seems like it's gone now for good.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Um there's still the Franklin UCB Center, but not the training center.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: I'm like, does my diversity scholarship still apply?
- 33:49SPEAKER_02: Like, do I is it expired now?
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't know.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, did you get you got with that as well?
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I got a few diversity scholarships, but the last one I got was like was right before the pandemic hit.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: And so I was like, I'm not gonna take online improv.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: It's I just didn't want to be online because I was like online for everything.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: I was like, I'm not gonna voluntarily do this, but we'll see.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: I we've been doing our shows online.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: It's been a thing.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: Well, I did a couple improv shows online, but like I did, I was like tutoring.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: I had my nonprofit meetings.
- 34:22SPEAKER_02: I had like like I was just like at the very beginning of the pandemic, I was tutoring like non-stop.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: I was like, I'd have like 12 hour days.
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: Um and then once I got my my writing job, now it's like a lot better.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Um, and I I only have like a couple meetings uh for that.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: But yeah, it's I just couldn't, I couldn't.
- 34:40SPEAKER_02: I was had like I I have like six meetings for my nonprofit every week and stuff, but yeah, lately I've been kind of taking a couple a couple off, but yeah.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: I do not blame you.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: It sounds like you work very hard on a lot of things.
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, people it was wild.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: Like during the pandemic, a lot of people were like, all of us are bored, none of us have anything to do.
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: What are you doing?
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: And I like and I was because uh there were, I don't know, I got in a fight with somebody, and he was like, Well, back then when we were talking about that thing, like everybody wasn't didn't have anything to talk about, anyways, because nobody was doing anything.
- 35:11SPEAKER_02: And I was like, I was working my ass off like fucking.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: I feel like I was work having to work harder on things that weren't paying as well, because it was just like I have to get something out there to do something.
- 35:23SPEAKER_02: There was like a lot of pressure to just like produce something by the end of the pandemic, like to have something to show for, like to have like it was like Bo Burnham's fucking thing.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: It was Oh, then he came out with that, and I'm like, oh fuck you, Bo.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: Like why did you have to make something amazing like that?
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: Everybody was like trying to be him, and then he came out with that.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: We were just like, All right, well, that clearly didn't happen.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: Uh but whatever.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: Comes out with his perfect directed special on his own.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: Directed in like all of the parts of it too, like every like the lighting and the audio.
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: I feel like those technicalities must have been really difficult.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: That's I think the audio and I think audio lighting and camera work are just like everything.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: They're so hard, and they're everything, and I don't think uh people people give them enough credit.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I had to teach myself audio work for this, and it was it's just like so much more complicated than you think it's gonna be.
- 36:16SPEAKER_02: I have been in this for over a year and I still don't have a good Zoom setup, and I refuse.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: I refuse to have a good Zoom, audio, visual, I don't give a shit anymore.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: I went the opposite.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: I was like, I'm not gonna learn this to have the faith that we're gonna get out of it.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: I well I it's gonna be interesting when I start going because I've only ever done the podcast online.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: So once I start once I transition into like in-person recording now, it's gonna be very interesting to see the difference.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: And yeah, like having to take all my audio equipment with me.
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: Oh wow, that's wild.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: But I mean, maybe you'll still get to do some zoom ones so that you can because like otherwise you Oh yeah, I definitely will.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: I'm definitely still gonna ask people that are like not in London.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 37:01SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, it's just like very niche.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, like that okay, so I sorry, I took us on a wild tangent, but like back back to the podcast.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: Back to the uh the movie itself.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, like Emily's gone missing, the boy can't act, and you like you like his voice, but it's not his voice.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: I can't believe that wasn't his voice.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: I mean it's his voice when it's him, obviously, but then like when it's the cat, it's not his voice.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: It's like a different voice.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: And it's not no it's not a noticeable change either.
- 37:31SPEAKER_00: I was surprised when I was.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: So they must have gotten him to match the voice like as closely as possible.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: What I did notice was it's a little bit it's a little bit more like he's trying to be a little bit more almost English in his voice when it's the actor, and then when it's the voiceover, he kind of like forgets about that.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: That's what it seems to be.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: Or like like or like not English, but like the 1600s American voice.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, kind of forgets about it.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: Kind of modernise it a little bit.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: Uh when it gets a bit more.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: Well, which makes sense because um it would have changed, but then at the end when he comes back, it's uh a little bit.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: He forgets all about that.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: He's back in his body again.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, so basically like they the three witches it turns out the three witches have kidnapped her, and uh there's a potion they're gonna pour into her to make her uh to like steal her youth, essentially.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: And so they they do that and he tries to stop them and uh they shock him.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Uh so Emily get uh they get younger, Emily is sitting in the chair, supposedly dead, but one thing I noticed was like she's shaking.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: She was moving, yeah.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: She's like fully moving, which I found quite funny.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know if she was meant to be dead or just like dying.
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: So I just kind of was like, eh, I don't know.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: I I mean, benefit of the doubt.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: Um it's a kid as well, so um oh, one thing we didn't mention as well, I forgot to mention this is directed by Kenny Ortega, who um I don't know if you're aware, he's so he's like the high school musical guy.
- 39:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's where he's from, yeah.
- 39:12SPEAKER_00: And he's like the musical, he's just like musical theater.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: This is all making sense.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: Incredible.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: He's come up on this podcast before as well because he'd also directed newsies.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: What?
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, this man made my childhood.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: I love the newsies.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: Which I believe came out the same year as this.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: Holy shit.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: My I think I only learned about the newsies through like the cool kids in my elementary school, and then I like got obsessed with the cool kids?
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the cool kids.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: That doesn't no, they loved it.
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: They were like musical and stuff, and they loved it.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: But he's he's a decent director, I think.
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: He's great, and he's great for kids.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: Clearly, he keeps making these bangers great for kids movies.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he does what he does incredibly well.
- 40:02SPEAKER_02: If he made newsies and hocus pocus and high school musical.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and to make the those two back to back as well, newsies and hocus pocus is like that's impressive.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: It's like a that's like a Jim Carrey move.
- 40:14SPEAKER_02: He had like Ace Ventura and the Mask and Dumb and Dumb are all coming on the stage.
- 40:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: Um but both of these flops they're not, they're classics, okay.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: No, they are classics now, they are cult classics now.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: Um, but at the time they flopped and lost Disney a lot of money.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: So I'm quite surprised that he ended up going back to Disney to make a high school musical.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well many years later.
- 40:41SPEAKER_02: Once you're in the industry, baby, you have so many chances.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: He's a white man in the industry.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: Um I was like, Ortega?
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure.
- 40:52SPEAKER_00: I've s well, I've seen him, he's a white man.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: Um he's so yeah, the Binx gets turned into a cat and the ki the uh the rest of the townsfolk like knock on the door and like break out break it down and sentence the witches to hanging.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: Uh which the witch, uh Winifred the lead witch, uh Bet Middle's character, uh casts a spell that they will return 300 years uh not 300 years later, but when a virgin lights the black candle.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: Black flame candle.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: Black flame candle.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: It's very important.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Um and then it cuts to 300 years later, uh, and Max is in the classroom being taught this, like being taught about all this, basically.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: And he's like, oh no, I don't believe in all that.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: And they call him uh the teacher calls him like um oh what is it?
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: It's something funny that um some reference to LA.
- 41:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a tie-dye shirt and something like that.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: I forget what it was, but it was it made me laugh though, because it's just like oh this is so 90s as well.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: Just the everyone's vision of what LA was like in the 90s.
- 42:02SPEAKER_02: Which wasn't I don't know how untrue it was, but but it was very like there was later his bullies like say something about like tubular or something like that, and I was just like, Well, uh somebody referenced pogs now.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: Wait, when did you move to LA?
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: I moved to well, I had a strange uh relationship with this town.
- 42:23SPEAKER_02: Um I went to Caltech for undergrad, so I moved to Pasadene uh from 2011, 2000 or 2007 to 2011, and then I was I left, I came home for three months, and I went back to Glendale and lived there for a year, and then I left, and then I came back um for my PhD, which I quit, um, and I came back in 2016.
- 42:43SPEAKER_02: So it's been like another like five years, yeah.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: So it's been like a while then you've been here.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: Uh been there.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: Um yeah.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: But on and off, I guess, until like five years ago.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: Um I was just wondering if you had like happen to be there as a kid or anything, or as a teenager, but no, I yeah, I mean as a teenager like when I was like 18, 19, when I went to school, but I was like pretty locked, landlocked in my campus.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: Um because uh yeah, my knowledge of yeah, I guess my knowledge of LA is I went there twice, I think, and then haven't haven't been back since, but uh I went there as a kid, so like I went there in the 90s, and so I went to um London when I was 11, I think.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you were telling me before Yeah, I was eleven.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that's the only time I've been there, so and I keep telling you you gotta come back and I know I want to, I definitely want to.
- 43:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, we'll p like post-pandemic, everything calms down.
- 43:45SPEAKER_02: I'm definitely gonna travel more.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: So and when you come here, we can like we'll do some shows.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: Hell yeah.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: I'm excited.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: And I'll open with you I'll open for you with my like five minute beginners.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: We'll see.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: We'll see how these Brits like matchups.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: Half of them are about them, so I don't know.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: Um But yeah, so uh he basically like in the classroom he he gets up and he hands Allison his phone number.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: Five, five, five, something, something, something.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: There were so many, there was can I okay, can I skip ahead real quick?
- 44:27SPEAKER_02: So he he does that, which is cocky, and then he apologizes to her afterwards when they're together, which classic guy move to do something publicly humiliating and then apologize privately.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: So that yeah.
- 44:38SPEAKER_02: Um and then later when they meet up on Halloween night, uh his little sister said that he had talked about Allison and said that she had nice Yabos, which I'm assuming mean boobs, and and they just move past it.
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: She's just like she like she just offers her sister candy or something like that.
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: Like it they don't say any, she just like smiles about it.
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: This like horrible thing that this guy said.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: But it's is it that he definitely said it though?
- 45:09SPEAKER_00: Because it's almost like the the sister is just trying to embarrass him.
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: But he reacts really weird, but I don't know if he definitely said I think it it it could be one or the other, but either way.
- 45:31SPEAKER_00: And then like the sister jumps out of the closet.
- 45:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't I don't know, like I don't know if he um if he she was just like trying to embarrass him at that point, but the reaction was so strange.
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: Like she was the Allison was just like anyways, want some candy, or like it's just like she like smiled about it.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: Let's move on from this awkward moment.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think that's what she's probably what it is with her.
- 45:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but but that's like again a hundred percent what happened what happened in the 90s.
- 45:59SPEAKER_02: Like men were gross, and then we just had to move on from it.
- 46:04SPEAKER_00: Men are still gross now.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: Let's not same, same, yeah, same situation.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, she gives she immediately like goes outside and gives him the number back when they're talking to each other.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: Which I thought was funny.
- 46:19SPEAKER_00: It's just like she's not in she's not interested, but then for the rest of the movie she is.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it was weird the whole interaction, but um, but then he runs into Jay and Early, or Ice, as he's known, the school the the two bullies, who are the most weird characters in this movie.
- 46:40SPEAKER_02: I bet they were like the chillest people on set to hang out with.
- 46:43SPEAKER_02: I bet those two guys were just like, yeah, what's up?
- 46:47SPEAKER_00: Like they look so much older than his.
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they look like 30 years old.
- 46:53SPEAKER_02: The ice guy looks like he owns a record shop.
- 46:56SPEAKER_02: Like I and the other guy, um definitely I feel like slam poet or something.
- 47:01SPEAKER_02: But like they they're so much older, they're very their like faces are strange, I think, on purpose.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: Um, but they I think they were classic bully tropes, right?
- 47:11SPEAKER_02: They were they reminded me of the home alone uh robbers a little bit with that dynamic, right?
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: I kind of see it.
- 47:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: Um one funny thing is one of them is supposed to be like this rock guy and the other one is the hip-hop guy, but it's just like the nine it's just pure like what an old nine old person in the 90s would write when writing this movie would imagine like those two would be, like what kids are into.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which is so embarrassing.
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: Um it's very yeah.
- 47:45SPEAKER_02: I hope Kenny Ortega's friends uh had a good time on that set.
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: That's his those are his uncles.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: That's yeah, he's just like, yo, you guys want to be in this movie?
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: And they're like, rock and roll, dude.
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: Jubilee.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: Um but they they steal his sneakers.
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: Um because he's got like I don't know, some kind of nice sneakers basically.
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: Uh and he comes running home and he's like angry and embarrassed by it, and that's when he's like, uh he's embarrassed, he hates the whole city, but then they move to.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: And his little sister Danny jumps out at him and says, Oh, you've got to take me to uh you've got to take me trickle treating.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: He's like, Oh, fine, okay.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: Um and she immediately humiliates him in front of all of them because she in front of all the bullies.
- 48:38SPEAKER_00: In front of the bullies, yeah, because she like he he gives the cat he gives the the bullies want her candy and she's like uh no, I've got a big brother who'll beat you up.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: And he just gives it gives the bullies the candy and she like she says something to them I can't remember what it is she says, but it's just like very embarrassing to them.
- 48:56SPEAKER_00: Uh to him.
- 48:57SPEAKER_00: And he he he's like, Oh you you just humiliated me.
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: And they wander into like this but then he's like, Okay, I forgive you.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: They wander up to this like really, really fancy rich house, and it's Alison's house, it turns as it turns out, and there's some like weird party going on, like weird rich party going on in there.
- 49:15SPEAKER_00: Um and she wanders down the stairs, and like this is what you were talking about with the Yabos thing.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:23SPEAKER_02: And she looks beautiful, and he's all like excited to be around her.
- 49:27SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I thought that was like an interesting turn.
- 49:33SPEAKER_00: It's it's yeah, I I wonder why they made her like the rich girl of the town.
- 49:40SPEAKER_02: I don't know like what that had Um I think it's very important to humanize rich people um and to make them just be like the most likable characters in a movie.
- 49:49SPEAKER_00: Um, that's the thing, they do make her like one of the most likable.
- 49:52SPEAKER_02: She's like the most reasonable, she does all the right things.
- 49:55SPEAKER_02: She doesn't have a personality, kind of.
- 49:57SPEAKER_02: Like she just like is a good person.
- 49:59SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I mean?
- 50:00SPEAKER_02: Like she's just like kind and like does the right thing and is also brave, but like another funniest thing as well.
- 50:06SPEAKER_00: It's like they don't at the end, when uh Binx is thanking everyone, he goes, he says thank you to Max, and he says thank you to Danny.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: And then he leaves.
- 50:16SPEAKER_00: He doesn't thank her at all, just standing there.
- 50:18SPEAKER_00: He's like, Thank you for everything you two did.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: He's like, Well, hang on, Alison did a lot as well.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: I think though, yeah, she did like probably like the most stuff, like in terms of like not fucking anything up and not like she never screamed too loudly and got anybody's attention.
- 50:34SPEAKER_02: She just like did all the right things, except she opened the book at the end, and that was her idea.
- 50:39SPEAKER_00: Well, that's right.
- 50:40SPEAKER_00: That was yeah, that was the bad thing.
- 50:41SPEAKER_00: But Binx doesn't know that.
- 50:43SPEAKER_02: Binx doesn't know that, he just doesn't give a shit about her.
- 50:47SPEAKER_00: She's just too intimidated by her.
- 50:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is like this is when people don't take hot girls seriously, okay?
- 50:53SPEAKER_02: Like you guys need to take hot girls, you need to respect hot girls, okay?
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: Is that a problem you're constantly facing then like people don't respect you?
- 51:02SPEAKER_02: No, I just see my friends facing it all the time.
- 51:05SPEAKER_02: People don't respect me for other reasons.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: Um but they uh yeah, so they go to they all decide the three of them to decide to go out together on he like no, he convinces her he's like, let's go to the house.
- 51:24SPEAKER_02: Oh he was like, come on, because she's like in she's like I'm really into witches.
- 51:28SPEAKER_02: And then and then the girl was like, Oh, like, yeah, I'm learning about the Sanderson sisters, and then he's like, Let's go to the house then, because she said that her mom like was a museum person or whatever.
- 51:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I remember that.
- 51:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 51:40SPEAKER_02: So then he's and then she's like, okay, let me change.
- 51:44SPEAKER_02: I was like, I would never go to like a random abandoned witch's house with a strange dude from LA that I met and his little sister.
- 51:51SPEAKER_02: I'm like, that's so weird, but they were into it, so they went.
- 51:56SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, but basically he lights like he he gets like all cocky and he likes the candle.
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: And because of that, the sisters return.
- 52:09SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 52:09SPEAKER_00: And then this whole thing about a virgin lit the candle.
- 52:13SPEAKER_02: They said it so many times, but also great effects.
- 52:16SPEAKER_02: There was like green light coming from the floorboards.
- 52:18SPEAKER_02: I feel like this could be be redone as like a play, like very well.
- 52:22SPEAKER_02: You know, it's not like very like theatrical and great set.
- 52:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:27SPEAKER_00: This would make a really good play.
- 52:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like a good musical, yeah.
- 52:30SPEAKER_00: I think it would make a great musical.
- 52:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so.
- 52:33SPEAKER_02: I think it would be amazing.
- 52:35SPEAKER_02: Kenny, call my line, buddy.
- 52:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:38SPEAKER_00: Well, they are well, we'll get to it later, but they are making a sequel.
- 52:41SPEAKER_02: Um I bet they'll make a musical after the sequel.
- 52:44SPEAKER_02: I bet that's what they'll do.
- 52:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:45SPEAKER_00: They should.
- 52:46SPEAKER_00: Um But basically, Danny, like they all hide as the as the witches are coming in, and Danny uh claims Danny's dressed up as a witch, and so she claims that she did it.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: Because the witches aren't aware of like where they are when they're black or anything like that.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: Very smart of her because they like she like they hit something and she like pops up because she was scared, and then she like does a save.
- 53:08SPEAKER_02: Um and that's very, very precocious child.
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: Also a very night nineties Disney thing.
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: Oh precocious children.
- 53:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:16SPEAKER_00: Um but basically they the witches realize that uh the other two are there.
- 53:26SPEAKER_00: And uh because I think they still want to they realise uh Danny's not a witch, I think, and they try and like take her.
- 53:34SPEAKER_02: They can smell a child, yeah.
- 53:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:36SPEAKER_00: So they try and take her, but then uh they fight off the witches, and Max jumps to the uh ceiling and he like light he gets his lighter out and lights, so there's um the the the water comes out, sprinkle system, uh which is very smart as well, and he's like and they're all terrified because like he he produced fire from his hands, um and they're all terrified of the water.
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: So the three of them manage to get out.
- 54:00SPEAKER_02: But before this, um Binx tries to stop him from lighting the candle originally, and that's when we meet Binx as a cat.
- 54:06SPEAKER_02: Um that's when they meet Binx as a cat.
- 54:09SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 54:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 54:11SPEAKER_00: Sorry, I completely missed that.
- 54:12SPEAKER_02: No, it's totally fine.
- 54:14SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, they don't realize that cat can talk until they get outside, though.
- 54:19SPEAKER_02: Well, he's like on top of him and he's like, grab the book, and he's like, You can talk, and he's like, Grab the book, you in hand, or something.
- 54:25SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 54:26SPEAKER_02: And then uh, and so he Binx tells uh Max to get the book and then they leave, and then the other two realize that he can talk.
- 54:33SPEAKER_02: And then Binx and Danny, best friends forever.
- 54:36SPEAKER_02: Oh I love it.
- 54:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a nice friendship.
- 54:40SPEAKER_00: They um but the the funny thing is the I think the funniest part of this movie is when the kid the the witches come outside and they see the road, yeah, and it's and they're so terrified of it, they're like, Oh, it's it's black water, like don't stand in it.
- 54:55SPEAKER_00: And they start like and then Sarah Jessica Parker like puts her foot down on it and it's like it's fine.
- 55:00SPEAKER_00: Um and they start doing like this like timid walk across it, yeah.
- 55:05SPEAKER_00: Terrified and like down the street, and then they hear the fire truck go past and they like immediately run back inside.
- 55:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:11SPEAKER_00: I wish they'd done more with like the witches adjusting to Nathan.
- 55:15SPEAKER_02: They did they did the bus thing where they like got in the bus and they didn't know what it was, and the guy was flirting, and Sir Jessica Parker drove the bus.
- 55:22SPEAKER_02: This was like right after, right?
- 55:24SPEAKER_00: That's a weird scene.
- 55:25SPEAKER_02: Wait, well, wait.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: First we meet Philip.
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: Philip is like the guy raised from the dead.
- 55:30SPEAKER_02: Um, because they William.
- 55:33SPEAKER_02: Or William.
- 55:34SPEAKER_00: Bill, Bill.
- 55:35SPEAKER_02: Bill.
- 55:35SPEAKER_02: Oh, why did I say Philip?
- 55:36SPEAKER_02: Um, but we meet we meet him first, and then and then they then it chases him suits, and then the bus thing happens.
- 55:43SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 55:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:44SPEAKER_00: He re also that guy is so good at what he does.
- 55:48SPEAKER_00: That guy does a lot of um like uh of those kind of like costume characters.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: Um he does all the Guillermo de Toro ones.
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 55:59SPEAKER_00: So you know he was the he was the the fish in the shape of water, he's in Pan's Labyrinth with the eyes.
- 56:06SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 56:07SPEAKER_00: He's very good.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: I love learning he's like an Andy Circus type motherfucker.
- 56:11SPEAKER_02: Like I love learning that.
- 56:13SPEAKER_00: Doug Jones is his name.
- 56:14SPEAKER_00: Like you you will spot him in so many things, I promise you.
- 56:17SPEAKER_00: Like, he's in everything.
- 56:18SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 56:19SPEAKER_00: Anytime that character anytime any that anything like that comes up, it's him.
- 56:23SPEAKER_00: That's so cool.
- 56:25SPEAKER_00: But yeah, the cat gets so yeah, like there there is the bus scene uh where they get on the bus and they flirt with the guy, basically, to get on the bus.
- 56:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 56:36SPEAKER_00: Uh the bus driver, and then for some reason Sarah Jessica Parker is sitting on his lap driving the bus, and it's really creepy.
- 56:44SPEAKER_02: Well, it's she's the sexy one, so they had to have her be this sexy.
- 56:48SPEAKER_02: He like told them he was gonna get them pregnant, basically, when they got on the bus.
- 56:52SPEAKER_02: They were like, we want children, and he's like, Well, it's gonna take me a few tries.
- 56:56SPEAKER_02: Very sexual, this part of the story.
- 56:58SPEAKER_00: Very sexual for a kid's movie.
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 57:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, but they run Binks over at this point.
- 57:05SPEAKER_00: Um, and then so you see a completely flat cat.
- 57:09SPEAKER_02: Very like horrific if you if I was like a child to see a flattened cat.
- 57:15SPEAKER_02: Like they cut to him on the road, just like completely flattened.
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: And then you see then you hear like the crunching sound as he like comes back to life.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 57:25SPEAKER_00: Horrible.
- 57:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 57:27SPEAKER_00: Um so you find out he can't die, uh, basically, because of like uh all the spells going on because of the spell going on, like there's something in that where he can't die because they are I don't know what was the reason he can't die because of what they did.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: He was just like immortal from the from the beginning when he was like when that happened.
- 57:47SPEAKER_00: But he's only immortal while they are alive.
- 57:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know what that is.
- 57:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:52SPEAKER_01: I can't remember.
- 57:53SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know.
- 57:55SPEAKER_00: But they but they go that basically they wind up at um the devil's house.
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: What they think is the devil's house.
- 58:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:01SPEAKER_00: And it's the and it's Gary Marshall, but he's just like some guy in a costume.
- 58:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:05SPEAKER_00: Um and there's also like Eddie the fake cop who the kids are talking to, which is just a weird scene.
- 58:14SPEAKER_02: Uh try to like report what happened, and Eddie is a playing a cop who's being very unhelpful, and then later we find out he was just dressed up as a cop, which um I like the portrayal of cops in this movie.
- 58:24SPEAKER_02: Like they won't help you, um, they're all fake, and uh they are obsolete.
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: And he's only interested in himself.
- 58:33SPEAKER_02: Um his hot lady friend.
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:38SPEAKER_00: Uh so they run basically they run to the parents' party.
- 58:42SPEAKER_00: Um, and this is uh this is your favourite scene because Max gets on stage and starts like addressing the the witches in the room.
- 58:50SPEAKER_00: He's like they are evil, they're witches, they've come they're bad and everything, and then nobody believes them, and then Bet Midler breaks into song.
- 58:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like a distraction.
- 59:01SPEAKER_02: Because they were singing, the band was singing that before, so they just like picked it up again.
- 59:04SPEAKER_02: But it was singing it before.
- 59:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they were missed that completely.
- 59:07SPEAKER_02: I think they were singing it like in the background before.
- 59:10SPEAKER_02: Um I thought she just like start breaks out into it, and I was like, oh, that's interesting.
- 59:14SPEAKER_02: And then she and then it everything stops, and then she breaks out into it, and they pick up again um with her version this time.
- 59:20SPEAKER_02: But I was like, wow, she knew all the lines, that's incredible.
- 59:22SPEAKER_00: Like that's what I found funny, yeah.
- 59:26SPEAKER_02: But we have to have these plot holes because otherwise it wouldn't be a fun movie.
- 59:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: It was a song in the 1600s, we'll allow it.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure.
- 59:35SPEAKER_00: But they lure the basically what happens is they the kids run away and they lure them into the school, into the high school, into this um into like the kiln room.
- 59:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: Um and they shut them in there and they set them alight, and so they think it's all over.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: And then because you see the witches burning and like the smoke come out from the room.
- 59:55SPEAKER_02: This was also a really great scene because they they close the door, there's a tiny window, and then they pull the thing, and the way the lighting works, where it lights up Beth Medler's face and her face is center, and the two witches are on the side of her, so good, so theatrical again.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_02: Like I I was like, whoa, damn.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_00: When I watched I also want to say, like, for the time, very good graphics for all this for this movie, like very good special effects.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_00: Uh for a low budget, lowish budget.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_02: I don't know if it is like the I guess for that budget, probably.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_02: It was yeah, the like flying and everything was like pretty good.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_02: Um, but I was like, I was just thinking, I was like, I don't know if it was like the best, but I guess if since it's low budget, because I was like Star Wars before it and then Jurassic Park after it.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_02: I was like, I don't know.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, that is true, actually.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_00: Um but what okay, so what do you think it costs then out of interest?
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_00: Or do you know?
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_02: Oh fuck, I have no idea how much it costs.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_00: I looked at it cost more than I thought it did as well.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_00: So that kind of like takes it down a little bit, but it costs 28 million.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_02: Oh fuck, what?
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_02: That's way more than I thought it costs.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_02: But also like Beth Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathie Najimi were like at the they were like about to peak or peaking, right?
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_02: I feel like Beth Midler she'd already done.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_02: She'd already done beaches.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_02: Kathy Najimi and Sarah Jessica Parker were like best.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_00: Sarah Jessica Parker was like on the edge of it.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think I think Kathy and Jimmy was like working though.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_00: She was just like I think she was just like a regular, like smaller part thing.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_00: I don't think she would have gone like a huge budget.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_02: Definitely Beth Midler, though.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_02: I bet they threw a lot of things.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: Beth Midler would definitely have cost a lot.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely cost a lot of money.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_00: Um and probably Kenny Ortega as well, I'd imagine, at the time.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_00: Um But yeah, like they they so they it's they take the kit they take, they think it's all over, so they go back to his house like back to Max's house, and this is a weird scene because Danny cuddles up with the cat with uh Binx, the cat, and then the other two get into bed together and cuddle up.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_00: It's like, oh, this is for a Disney movie.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_02: This is a bit I guess they didn't do anything, they just like I know they didn't do anything, but like Yeah.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_02: I I feel like I would still be like, alright, see ya dude.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_02: But this is why I'm single, so well, you would have just gone home after that.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_00: Or you wouldn't have even gone out with him in the first place, so I would not have gotten out with him.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't have been like, yeah, let's go to this house in the woods with this strange dude I just met.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_02: Um but then also like yeah, I would have been like, I need to shower, like I am tired, I have like school in the morning, I'll see you or something.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_00: But that yeah, they they wake up at five in the morning though, and uh Danny's gone, and they're like, what happened to Danny?
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_00: Um it turns out the witch has taken her.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_02: Because sh because she opened the book, right?
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_02: Because Allison opened the book and then it was a beam to the witches of where to go, and Binks closed the book.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_00: Does she open it at night then?
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think she opened it at night, and then they that's how it beckoned her, beckoned them.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, I think I don't know.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_02: I don't know, actually.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_00: I guess I missed something I might miss something out when I was writing this.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_02: The witches the witches got to the house because they saw the beam of light when when Alison opened the book and then Binks Binx closed it.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_02: That's true.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_00: So it has to have been at night.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_02: The witches, so the witches survived the the kiln, and I'm assuming it's because of the magic or whatever.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it's just that they can't die at that point.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because they're still I think the curse, I think the the the spell has to be lifted before they can.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think something like that.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_02: So they can only wait wait to the light of day or something.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_02: But um Hogus Pocus fans are gonna be at our next after this.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_02: They're gonna be.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_00: How do you know how do you not know the lore of this movie?
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_00: Um but yeah, they open the basically the book is open, the witches come.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, because the witches fly off into the night.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_02: The witches fly off and their brooms are gone because their brooms were stolen during uh by like little uh girls dressed up as witches um on Halloween, like during trick-or-treating, so they have to like get whatever they can, and then Kathleen and Jamie flies out on a vacuum cleaner, and it's the funniest fucking thing.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_02: I love that's like my favorite joke in the movie.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_00: She just literally picks it off, she's like, I I don't know.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_00: No, but she was like, guys, like the way she the way she was like I guess um, but they they surprise her, they surprise the two of them in the bedroom, and Sarah Jesus Kid Park was hiding under the bed.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, under the bed sheets, and the kids are like, oh no, we gotta use salt to get rid of them, and it like immediately doesn't work.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_00: Um and then they share like an almost one of those almost kiss moments.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_00: Um doesn't happen.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_00: Um but the witches take the the witches have taken Danny and they start s and they start singing Sarah Jessica Faga starts singing a song for the children to lure them, lure all of them.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_00: Because basically, like the m the more the better it is for them, I think.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_00: Um or is it the more chances?
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I think it's just they'll become more immortal or something like that.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_00: Probably.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_00: Um so she lore they manage to lure all the kids to to the to them, and basically what happens is uh Max gets there and he starts going on about it being daylight savings time.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_00: And this is what I'm not entirely clear about.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_02: Well, first um the bullies are locked up in like the Oh yeah, completely because that the bullies are like locked up in the cages because they had been caught by the witches.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_01: I forgot about that, yeah.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_02: And then and then Max shows up and he's like, It's daylight savings, and so the sun's gonna come up.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_02: And so he does another scare, just like he did the first time with the sprinklers.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_02: He's like, It's daylight savings, the sun's about to come up, and you guys didn't time this properly.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_02: And so then they freak out and they think they're gonna gonna be like melting or turn or turn into dust, right?
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_00: And uh yeah but how does he get the light in there?
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_00: What does he do with that?
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_02: He just they what they did was um they used the car headlights and they just put they put the like a a thing over it to make it like be um pink or whatever and so as they're running out uh they rip it off and then it turns white and then the witches are like what because and then they like somehow completely miss that.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_02: And then the witches were like what this isn't right and then they like um uh want they want to specifically get Danny because she called Beth Midler's character ugly.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah so like they have all these other kids coming towards them and they're like no and then these guys are just like get out of the way to all the kids about to get sacrificed.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_02: They're just like trying to get the fuck out of there.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_02: And I'm like why like they didn't try to save the day again like by undoing what happened with the witches.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_02: They literally were just like running away knowing like four year olds were about to die.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_02: Like it's just like even Binx I was like Binx what are you doing that part was right.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_00: I think they set themselves up there in the plot.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah um but it turns out there's only one potion available because there's not enough time basically they they only have one enough oh because no it's because he knocked the potion over again he this like this fool just does the same has Max Dennison has the same moves.
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_02: He's just like constantly knocking potions over and pretending things are going to get them that aren't and that's like how he gets out of it.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_00: No but the the witches say there's only one potion left because we don't have enough time to make another one.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah because he knocked over the battery right got you okay yeah so so they only had the one and they were like I want to get that that girl who called me up yeah so they want specifically want it for Danny.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_00: But um there's this whole like fight sequence where um they that so they've got Danny and Max manages to like grab the potion and get it away from them or like knock it out of their hands and he decides to drink the both well well one key thing is that Binks like runs up to is that right before or after I can't remember.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_00: Binks is the one knocks it you're right Binks is the one knocks it out of their hands this is this is very important.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_02: To me this movie is all about the love between a brother and a sister and it's because of Binks and his sister and um Max and his sister like that's what this story this this movie is about for me.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_02: And so it I thought it was very important that Binks was able to save Danny because he couldn't save Emily his sister.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_02: That's a good point yeah yeah so that's pretty nice Binx had to be the one to do it because he had to have like redemption for his soul to feel like to feel like it was okay and that he he could let it go like Max had told him to because previously you know in that they had a conversation where Binx was like you have to protect your sister with your with your life like you have no idea how precious this relationship is and Max was like you gotta let your guilt go and so I think that was like his redeeming moment is like he had to save the girl because he couldn't save his case that's yeah that's something that multiple viewers will take get get you to take out of that yeah I completely missed the problem is I sit and just like take direct notes when I'm watching these um but yeah so like he knocks the potion out Binx knocks the potion out and Max grabs it and says and they because they're trying to give it to Danny but Max drinks it and he's like well now you have to now you have to sacrifice me because I'm a virgin.
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah you have to like let her go and sacrifice me.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_02: And this is an example again of the brother saving the sister which is like like one right after another like he is like so Binks just redeemed himself for him not being able to save Emily and then Max is like this is not I'm not gonna allow this to happen and that's how generations learn from the past it's like it like he's not allowing Danny to be put at risk so that I like that's like a a beautiful thing from this movie.
- 1:10:14SPEAKER_00: It's a sweet moment.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah um and then the sun rises just in time yeah uh just before he's about to get oh sorry like he's having that they start taking his life from him yeah and you see him like fade slowly and as that's happening the sun rises and because of that um Bet Midler's character turns to stone and the other two um just like evaporate and then she yeah and then she turns into dust right after too right yeah um I thought it was really funny because Beth Midler was just like sucking the life force out of this guy and so she didn't get to like I don't think she got to say anything and the other two were like ooh bye like before they disappear forever their last words like Kathy Najimi was like Bye bye and then because of all that Binx dies it's like the end of his spell as well.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_02: Um and Billy goes back to his grave oh also I shouldn't mention Billy's been helping them kind of yeah Billy like Billy um during the the big fight uh right before that he uh he he or no a little bit before that um he they realize that he like hates them he hates the witches for like showing his mouth shut and doing all this stuff to him and so he's now on their side and he's been helping them um and and in it his head rolls off a f a couple times.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_02: But uh but yeah so then he goes back to his grave like he's gonna take a nap and they just like smile at him and I'm like this okay I think he's like gonna be dead forever but alright.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_02: And then uh and then yeah Binks is we see him him being dead in human form.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_02: And then Danny uh realizes that his like human soul is free or whatever.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah and then he says goodbye.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_00: It's like hugging a dead cat which is so horrible.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah that like losing a pet is like such a crazy thing for a child to so to portray that on screen I was like damn um but then his like soul is free and to like be with Emily again.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_00: Which we see both of them it's weird that we see both of them but yeah and then he walks away and as he's walking away he's like I had to wait 300 years for a virgin yeah he's like all these sluts been walking around here damn Salem is a virgin god Salem is he's say like Binx is a slut shamer okay Salem is a horny town um truly um but then it basically it cuts to it's basically cut into the credits but as it's cut into the credits the it it shows the book and the book opens its eye to reveal that things aren't necessarily over.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah and then 30 years later we're gonna have a sequel.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_00: Lord it's 30 years later oh yep we're old we're the same age as well are we yeah oh wow we're old um but yeah so that's the movie and we you've pretty much defended like what you've we talked through it and like what you've liked and what you've enjoyed throughout the movie but is there anything that you really wanted to like say that you didn't get to um I just didn't defense of this okay in defense of it so I'm defending it.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_02: Incredible musical um again uh this the whole thing was the story of of the the love between a brother and a sister and I don't know that we see many of those stories.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_02: I don't think that we see that very often and I'm a little sister with an older brother so that made me feel good um and I liked it.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_02: I I don't know if I've made my brother watch this but maybe one day I will um this is how you're supposed to treat me you're supposed to die for me dude uh but um yeah so I don't know I really liked it I think um even though I think there's like a reason that these very like theatric like this um what was the oh my god uh the the how am I how am I missing what movie it was the one that became a cult classic uh Rocky War Picture Show like all of these like very um very like over the top kind of I I don't know if this is everybody's defining what camp is so I'm afraid to use that but it's kind of campy I guess I don't know.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say it and I was like maybe it's maybe it's nobody come for me Twitter okay I don't know what the fuck campy is and I'm gonna be using it incorrectly but it seems like it's more campy than what those celebrities thought at the Met Gala.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_02: But like you know these like these kind of like Mid was definitely camp in this movie.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah over the top like cheesy thing things that may not be like the most the the might not people might not think have the most depth but it does have heart and it is very sweet and um it I don't know it's very like eye grabbing and catchy and I feel like like all of those people went on to do really great things that were involved with it.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_02: Including I I bet like the if you if I don't know I haven't looked it up but I bet like the set designer and the like all of the special effects people were really um prolific and successful.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah I don't know it's a great movie everybody loves it everyone loves it I don't understand like why it got such bad reviews when it opened um like I'm just like I'm trying to look at them now and they don't the reviews are just like not anything.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_02: Even the bad reviews are just like eh I guess they I guess they didn't understand like the power of children of the children who grew up with those and especially like Disney Channel original movies or Disney movies in general like we had that had a hold on our childhood.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_00: It did yeah truly did yeah but one review I've just noticed though it says Disney goes queer and camp with Kenny Ortega's hocus focus.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_00: So there you go.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_02: Queer?
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_02: Was there anybody queer in the movie?
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_00: Why do they from Horror Queers podcast?
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_02: Okay I okay I see because every like year uh people are like it's the new queer Disney character and it's like it's they're not queer in them they're not actually queer you know yeah but um that's the only reason I read it instead because it's it's come from horror queers podcast so like I'll give it up I'll allow that then I'll I don't know they can they can say well I don't know if they're I mean I'm queer I don't know if I like I just didn't know it's if there were any queer characters like openly queer characters in the movie.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_02: I don't know do you think do you think Max is overcompensating calling them who if you're if you're a teen and you're calling boobs the two bullies if you're calling boobs yabbo's then you might need to step back and reevaluate your sexuality.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_00: That's true.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_00: I'm just saying um but like okay so final thoughts on this I want to ask you about what you think is gonna be what the what your thoughts are on this on the sequel coming out and what do you think it's gonna be about so who is in it?
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_02: I'm excited I haven't like heard much about it.
- 1:17:36SPEAKER_00: All I know is that the three of them are coming back the three books.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_02: Yes that's the those that's the main thing they have to be but that's the they're the only ones listed so far.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_02: That's so good.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_02: Um I don't know I I hope it's with like another you know uh kid with another a bunch of kids doing an adventure I hope they don't it has to be yeah I hope they don't make it like any like more I like I don't mind if they make it more like modern or whatever but I hope they don't um like make it like too try to make it too cool because the whole point of why it was successful is because it wasn't like you know trying to be cooler than it was you know yeah um so I hope I hope it I hope it's good.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_00: One thing that does give me hope about it is that um it's being written by Jen D'Angelo who seems to be only six months older than I am.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_00: So she's probably grown up with this movie as well and is very aware of like what um if of of the whole like vibe of it I reckon.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_02: Okay, okay.
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_02: Um that does not give me hope because um she's our age and she's writing Hocus Pocus and what am I doing?
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_00: I know that it looks like she's done a lot already as well.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_02: Okay well I'm just losing it.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_02: Um different director though Anne Fletcher who did who is the director of Step Up Oh fuck yeah I love Step Up hell yeah I was all about those dance movies 27 Dresses I don't remember as well but Step Up was formative for me and my sexuality Wait are you talking about please tell me you're not talking about Channing Tatum I'm talking about everybody in that film everybody in that film was I was really into dance movies because I I used to dance so I like watched all of them and like was obsessed with them and Step Up was I have yeah dope.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_02: And also Channel could dance like other like other movies that were like dance movies it was like I okay God bless Julia Stiles but like I love her so much but she the uh I assume Save the Last Dance.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_02: Save the last just everything everything she was in where she had to dance there was like a thread recently of her dancing it was like very cute and I love her I loved Julia Stiles so much but yeah sorry though but like Channing Tatum could dance you know so but I will defend Save the Last Dance to this day I love it.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_02: Even though I know she kind of danced I was obsessed with it um but I yeah I don't know uh like how it holds up I haven't seen it in a long time I haven't I also haven't seen it in a long time so I saw it before I was jaded before I was like really stupid I was just like they love each other she has problems at home like again because we're the same age we've like these other movies that like formed our formed our opinions on everything.
- 1:20:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah formed our childhoods and teen years um but okay so let's move on to the final uh topic then which we'll keep very brief because I've kept you a long time but like um what is a movie that's the reverse of this which is a movie that is well reviewed and loved by people and critics that you think is a bad movie?
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_02: Anything like any World War II movie that's just like all white people I'm just like done.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_02: Like I just like this is I like I want there were like Indians that fought for like and shit like and I want to see that.
- 1:21:14SPEAKER_00: I just brought this up last week.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_00: So I so I I did the rever I literally did an episode because it was the year anniversary and it was the re I did the reverse for the whole episode and I chose Dunkirk because I was like you know what fuck this movie because like they did they ignore all the Indians that actually helped out in this movie in that time.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah I haven't yeah I haven't seen it okay wait I don't know but I don't know what like would be a reverse for this movie.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_02: What did you what did you think of?
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_02: Not specifically for this movie just the reverse of like the a bad movie okay yeah I don't know there's definitely like movies that I I haven't picked oh I don't know I don't have a specific one but I just like I hate those like those types of movies where it's just like full or like there was a movie I don't like just seeing a movie poster that's supposed to be about like like black history and a white person is the main character I'm just like there was one recently that like Spike Jones produced that was like similar to that where it was like I can't I can't remember it but I it was supposed to be about like something to do with civil rights or like black history and a a white person was like the main person on the picture.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_00: Uh nine days I don't know that can't be it no that's not it was it oh no no no sorry did I say Spike Jones?
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_02: Oh I meant Spike Lee Spike Lee because that's why like we were we were like why I always mix the the spikes up because we were like Spike Lee had this incredible like he's this incredible person producing all of these incredible black movies and then uh or movies about black people and black history and stuff and the black perspective and then he produced this movie and we were like what happened are you talking about black clansmen?
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_02: No it was another one um that he produced or directed I think he produced it I don't think he directed it Son of the South that sounds like something that's gotta be it the true story of one yight one young white southerner in the summer of 61 yeah that's it I've never even heard of this because look at look at the poster it's son of the south it's a white man in the in the at the very front and then a black man and a black woman behind him and a black and a white woman behind him.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_02: But it's like it it and the bottom is like a bunch of black people with signs that say like we want justice and freedom and stuff.
- 1:23:50SPEAKER_02: And it's like why would you put a like I'm just tired of these movies told from the white perspective about anything to do with any other culture.
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_02: So like I haven't seen this movie I don't I honestly don't know how it is.
- 1:24:02SPEAKER_00: It doesn't the reviews are great for it to be honest.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_02: But just based off of the poster I'm just like I'm I'm sick of that perspective.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_02: Oh just like tired of it.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah yeah I'm so sick of those movies and I sp I'm sick of them like being so well regarded at awards and like just winning all these awards and like and then they come out years later and they're like oh I'm sorry but they still take they still have the awards and stuff but their entire careers are like you know like it's kind of like with um all of the stuff done to women in Hollywood it's like apologies don't matter years later.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_02: Like everybody everybody um like I love Seth Rogan I think I think like a lot of my views align with him but I think wasn't it he who said the thing about um Catherine Heigel being difficult on um for her calling out some misogyny and then he he opened up about it and corrected it but like years after her career was destroyed.
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_02: And then same with like Will Smith and um the first Aunt Vivian they recently had a reunion like what 30 years after her career was destroyed by him and it's like okay it's wonderful that personally like you guys are like making amends but like you like they're fucked.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_00: Their lives were not like not that changed everything.
- 1:25:16SPEAKER_02: Not that their lives were fucked they were still like probably fine but like you know like I mean it really did affect Catherine Heigel.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_02: No but I mean but like I bet she's like financially stable still you know what I mean but I mean like it it uh in terms of like putting women in power and like allowing um them to have prominence yeah you destroyed their careers yeah like based off of like you them calling out misogyny and you being misogynist after like um so I don't know just seeing that kind of made me like even seeing the Aunt Viv thing after hearing her story I'm like that just made me like sadder and like more angry about this you know I know but everyone and all the way everyone talks about the original Aunt Viv they love her as well and it's just like so yeah sad what happened.
- 1:25:57SPEAKER_02: She killed it really it changed my view of a lot of things especially recently and all the Catherine Hagel stuff as well it's like at the time I remember at the time being like oh yeah that makes sense and then like reevaluating it years later I'm like oh god what was I thinking I think yeah like that I yeah I was like I think everybody was just like willing to like cut down a a like beautiful talented woman like and I don't know her personally I don't know anything else she's like said or whatever but I like based off of that interaction or that um circ those circumstances it's like yeah everybody wants the like the in in their own perceiv perception of a movie they want like the dorky guy to come ahead right like so they were willing to like this is a back to the hot girls getting a lot of shit right that we were talking about earlier.
- 1:26:50SPEAKER_02: And then with the Aunt Viv thing the thing that like broke my heart was like she was like I was pregnant and trying to like be financially secure like she was like talking about how she had to make decisions to protect herself and her career and her family and then they got upset it was like kind of vague but it seemed like Will got upset with her about it and and stuff and she was like she literally was like I was like pregnant and I had to deal with like having a child and I like needed time to take care of my child it was just like the saddest thing and I was just like fuck but that sucks.
- 1:27:23SPEAKER_00: Anyways fuck all of that but yeah okay so to wrap this up um let's see you uh yeah I loved Hocus Pocus and I think everyone should go out and watch this if they haven't already I'm sure a lot of most people have that listening to this but go and watch it it's it's I will say it's one of the most enjoyable ones I've had on the podcast.
- 1:27:49SPEAKER_00: It's so fun.
- 1:27:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_02: And I was yeah I was not I feel like I feel like it's timeless costumes like you you could be those costumes every Halloween you could watch this movie every Halloween and it would still be fun.
