- 1:32Speaker 3: I was all in, uh watching the speech, then going
- 1:35Speaker 3: back and watching it all the cut ups. It gave
- 1:37Speaker 3: me goosebumps. I had water in my eyes watching the
- 1:42Speaker 3: Saints fans emotional in Canton, Ohio. What he has meant
- 1:46Speaker 3: to New Orleans, the state of Louisiana, the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Jackson, Mississippi.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Don't forget training camp was here right Sean moved them
- 1:54Speaker 3: right up here, right down the road at Millsaps. I
- 1:57Speaker 3: remember going out there, and I remember were watching Drew
- 2:00Speaker 3: and when he couldn't throw that first year. And uh,
- 2:05Speaker 3: it's just a remarkable story of unprecedented success and everything
- 2:10Speaker 3: that it meant to the city of New Orleans after Katrina.
- 2:14Speaker 3: So we thought we would welcome in Johnny Blancher, who
- 2:19Speaker 3: owns the ye Old College in which was Drew Brees's
- 2:24Speaker 3: favorite restaurant in New Orleans, and he and Johnny became friends.
- 2:29Speaker 3: So Johnny Blancher joins us on ESPN one oh five
- 2:33Speaker 3: nine to the Zone. Johnny Blancher, good morning, How are you?
- 2:37Speaker 1: Good morning, bo I'm doing great. It's fun to talk
- 2:40Speaker 1: about your again.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Absolutely. When was the first time you met Drew Brees?
- 2:46Speaker 1: Johnny, Oh, wow, you know it was early on and uh,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you know that first summer just before you know season's
- 2:55Speaker 1: kicking off. So I guess it's really you know, two
- 2:59Speaker 1: years or so after, you know, Katrina, we're really kind
- 3:03Speaker 1: of getting going, starting to things are starting to pick
- 3:06Speaker 1: up again. And h in the you know, pulls up
- 3:10Speaker 1: right in front right around four o'clock. We opened at
- 3:14Speaker 1: four o'clock. I had my family in the restaurant. Actually,
- 3:17Speaker 1: they had come from school and they were hanging out
- 3:19Speaker 1: with us, and Drew Brees walks through the door, sits
- 3:22Speaker 1: in a bar table right there in the window by himself,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and he's looking around and he uh, and he just
- 3:29Speaker 1: sort of looks at me and says, is this your place?
- 3:32Speaker 1: I says, yeah, yeah it is. And he says, man,
- 3:35Speaker 1: you guys, you guys are baseball fans. Huh. We have
- 3:38Speaker 1: a lot of memorabilia on the wall, but right there
- 3:40Speaker 1: in the bar is mostly baseball stuff. And I said,
- 3:43Speaker 1: I said, yeah, we're we're baseball fans. You guys don't
- 3:46Speaker 1: like football? I said, no, we like football just fine,
- 3:52Speaker 1: but yeah, we're we're baseball guys. He said. I said, uh,
- 3:57Speaker 1: I said, but you like baseball. You play baseball? He says, yeah,
- 4:00Speaker 1: I do like this. So I said, your brother was
- 4:02Speaker 1: pretty good. His brother Reid had played at Baylor, you know,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and actually was on a team in the College World
- 4:08Speaker 1: Series that be two lane, a local you know, local
- 4:11Speaker 1: two lane team. And he says, man, you know that.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I said, yeah, and he is. Man, nobody knows how
- 4:19Speaker 1: good my brother was. Good. Man, that's awesome. And we
- 4:22Speaker 1: just hit it off. You know. He started coming back regularly,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and you know, it's been really good to us over
- 4:28Speaker 1: the years and I consider him.
- 4:31Speaker 3: A friend absolutely. What a what an incredible story. So
- 4:35Speaker 3: we're visiting with Johnny Blancher, owner of the ye Old
- 4:38Speaker 3: College in Drew Brees, has talked about it for years.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Many items on the menu, including the country fried steak
- 4:46Speaker 3: po boy. Okay, yeah, Uh was that so Johnny? Was
- 4:53Speaker 3: that his go to from the jump or did he
- 4:56Speaker 3: kind of navigate his way around your menu and get
- 5:00Speaker 3: there eventually?
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah, So that was something that he eventually decided to try,
- 5:05Speaker 1: reminding him of him of home. You know when you
- 5:07Speaker 1: get you know, when you get over into Louisiana, there's
- 5:10Speaker 1: not a whole lot of country fried chicken fried steaks
- 5:12Speaker 1: on on menus. But uh, we we had been doing
- 5:17Speaker 1: a chicken fried steak on the menu since nineteen thirty three,
- 5:21Speaker 1: so the you know, the menu item had been around forever.
- 5:24Speaker 1: But you know, he tried. He did a lot of
- 5:27Speaker 1: things before he you know, found that, and he was
- 5:30Speaker 1: looking I think he was just looking for a shiner
- 5:32Speaker 1: box that night and ah and something from home. You know.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So he had it and uh and loved it, and
- 5:39Speaker 1: he's he's mentioned it a few times over the years.
- 5:42Speaker 1: He also would love to steer away. He you know,
- 5:47Speaker 1: he mostly ate without touching gluten. You know, he didn't
- 5:50Speaker 1: touch a whole lot of gluten, so he would he
- 5:53Speaker 1: would usually eat around the breads or the or the pastas.
- 5:57Speaker 1: But the other thing he loved was a crawfish mac
- 6:00Speaker 1: and cheese, which you know, I would at times call
- 6:03Speaker 1: it crawfish mac and breeze in front of him.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Johnny Good you know, Uh, Johnny Blanche on the Out
- 6:14Speaker 3: of Bound show, friend of Drew Brees and Drew loves
- 6:18Speaker 3: their restaurant in New Orleans. Uh, it's on Carrollton and uh,
- 6:23Speaker 3: the story is amazing of how this all played out.
- 6:27Speaker 3: So did he have the regular Joe vibe from the jump?
- 6:31Speaker 1: Johnny definitely, you know, He's got a gift of just
- 6:35Speaker 1: being a dude, being a first rate human. You know,
- 6:39Speaker 1: he he knows it's all authentic with Drew. You know,
- 6:46Speaker 1: and he he really did. You know, he's he mentioned
- 6:49Speaker 1: it in his speech, you know how the camaraderie of
- 6:52Speaker 1: a team. Uh. You know he would come to college
- 6:55Speaker 1: in with his offensive line. Uh he would. He would
- 6:59Speaker 1: often come with you know, the other quarterbacks on the
- 7:03Speaker 1: on the team with him. They shouldn't have dinner together
- 7:06Speaker 1: and and you know, discuss life. I mean, it wasn't
- 7:09Speaker 1: always just football. But uh, you know, had that had
- 7:13Speaker 1: that gift. He remembers names. You know, he he knew
- 7:16Speaker 1: my you know, the employees, the staff there. If he
- 7:20Speaker 1: if you waited on him once, he remembered your name.
- 7:23Speaker 1: You know, it's it was, it's real with Drew. And
- 7:26Speaker 1: uh and that's why the city loved him. And you know,
- 7:30Speaker 1: I've always said that the city of New Orleans really
- 7:33Speaker 1: was never starstruck. You know they they you know, movie
- 7:38Speaker 1: stars come around. Everybody just kind of glances over and
- 7:42Speaker 1: just ignores and keeps going. Man, Drew Brees, he he
- 7:48Speaker 1: was on another level. People. Uh would just get so
- 7:51Speaker 1: giddy about seeing Drew Brees because he made shit. He
- 7:55Speaker 1: made us all uh feel great about ourselves.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Really, sure, what was it like trying to get your
- 8:07Speaker 3: customers to give him space when he would frequent your
- 8:11Speaker 3: restaurant Yield College in on Carrollton in New Orleans, Johnny.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I would try to make sure i'd get him
- 8:17Speaker 1: into a table fast. You know. It was because you know,
- 8:21Speaker 1: the whole the whole bar area, everybody waiting people would
- 8:25Speaker 1: would want to go talk to him and tell them
- 8:27Speaker 1: about his their favorite you know moment. Uh, So I
- 8:31Speaker 1: would certainly try to get him in in there quick,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and it was important otherwise we would never get a
- 8:37Speaker 1: chance to serve and people would talk to him all night.
- 8:39Speaker 1: But once he once he got in a table, people
- 8:41Speaker 1: would Yeah, they really did leave him alone and let him,
- 8:47Speaker 1: let him just be a guy.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:49Speaker 3: How walk me through?
- 8:52Speaker 2: So you meet.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Drew walks in one day to your restaurant on Carrollton
- 8:59Speaker 3: and you're your post. I guess ten months twelve months
- 9:04Speaker 3: Katrina walked me through reopening? I mean, where were you mentally?
- 9:08Speaker 3: Did you know for sure y'all were gonna keep going?
- 9:11Speaker 3: I mean, so during that timeline, where was your restaurant
- 9:16Speaker 3: in business? And where were you mentally Johnny, sure, sure,
- 9:20Speaker 3: So you.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Know we I mentioned in nineteen thirty three, we were
- 9:25Speaker 1: around forever, but uh when in three we you know,
- 9:28Speaker 1: we bought from we bought you old college in from
- 9:32Speaker 1: the original founding family, the Roofing family, and we already
- 9:36Speaker 1: had the rock and bowl and we were you know
- 9:38Speaker 1: in food and beverage, but we were not you know,
- 9:41Speaker 1: in dying, you know, full service dining. But you know
- 9:45Speaker 1: it's only two years in when Katrina hits we were
- 9:48Speaker 1: wiped out. And you know, we rebuilt in a building
- 9:54Speaker 1: right next door that happened to be in the older building,
- 9:56Speaker 1: but it was on the same property. Uh, just because
- 9:59Speaker 1: the condition of the buildings. So when we rebuilt that
- 10:02Speaker 1: sucker and got it open and uh in record time.
- 10:06Speaker 1: We were the first flooded restaurant to reopen. Now that
- 10:10Speaker 1: you know, we had the benefit of having a different
- 10:12Speaker 1: building to go into, but we jumped in, we got
- 10:15Speaker 1: it open, uh, and it was it was certainly a
- 10:19Speaker 1: leads a huge leap of faith we had become when
- 10:22Speaker 1: we decided to do dinner only, because everybody that was
- 10:26Speaker 1: already open in the area was just was doing launch only.
- 10:29Speaker 1: So we decided, well, we'll do dinner only and be
- 10:31Speaker 1: the only place around for dinner. And and that really
- 10:35Speaker 1: did work. The neighborhood, our neighborhood that Drew as a
- 10:39Speaker 1: part of. You know, he he fortunately moved in to
- 10:44Speaker 1: the neighborhood and was driving by every day from you know,
- 10:50Speaker 1: the practice facility back to the back to his house. So, uh,
- 10:55Speaker 1: you know, there was there was this thing in the
- 10:57Speaker 1: air that you know, we're gonna make it. Uh, it's
- 11:01Speaker 1: gonna be okay, don't know exactly how or why this
- 11:05Speaker 1: city is gonna come back again, but but it's going
- 11:08Speaker 1: to uh, you know, wants to. Now. Later on, when
- 11:13Speaker 1: the media, you know, met Drew eventually mentions a couple
- 11:16Speaker 1: of things in the media, of course, it helps us.
- 11:18Speaker 1: You know, we uh gave us credibility in certain circles
- 11:23Speaker 1: and and we still to this day have people from
- 11:27Speaker 1: around the you know, country, around the world that saw
- 11:31Speaker 1: something about Drew Brees talking about our restaurant and they
- 11:34Speaker 1: end up in New Orleans and they pop in and
- 11:36Speaker 1: try it out.
- 11:38Speaker 3: This is incredible. Johnny Blancher owns the restaurant Yield College
- 11:42Speaker 3: in Drew Brees's favorite restaurant in New Orleans on Carrollton.
- 11:48Speaker 3: It's a beautiful story about how they met organically and
- 11:52Speaker 3: became friends. And uh, Drew's support obviously helped them, and
- 11:57Speaker 3: of course they had the perseverance in the will to
- 11:59Speaker 3: reopen after Katrina. So you're you're you're getting open and
- 12:05Speaker 3: getting your feet under you, Johnny, right around the time
- 12:09Speaker 3: he and Sean get dropped in New Orleans, so and
- 12:13Speaker 3: and can you talk about once you once y'all got
- 12:17Speaker 3: going again and the fact that they went to the
- 12:20Speaker 3: NFC Championship game in year one and and Drew becomes
- 12:26Speaker 3: a regular customer for you. I know you touched on
- 12:29Speaker 3: it a little bit, but what kind of impact did
- 12:33Speaker 3: that have on your on both your businesses?
- 12:35Speaker 1: Johnny, Well, I think you know, it has a doubt.
- 12:39Speaker 1: You know, the impact on the businesses is kind of downstream. Uh,
- 12:43Speaker 1: there's a confidence in the air in the city when uh,
- 12:48Speaker 1: the you know, by the success of the team, there's
- 12:51Speaker 1: there's something to rally behind as a city that that
- 12:56Speaker 1: was important. I can't really express enough appreciation for what
- 13:03Speaker 1: the Saints ended up putting together with Drew and Sean
- 13:07Speaker 1: and the and the really the entire cast of of people,
- 13:12Speaker 1: the whole thing was first rate and and it really
- 13:15Speaker 1: did help propel us. There's an air of confidence in
- 13:20Speaker 1: the city. There's there's just some enjoyment. There's an escape
- 13:26Speaker 1: from the reality. I mean, you know, the whole world.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I've told people this in the past. If you if
- 13:32Speaker 1: you were here immediately after Katrina, there was a color
- 13:36Speaker 1: of gray that you didn't know existed. And I still
- 13:41Speaker 1: can't really, I could never draw it. I could never
- 13:44Speaker 1: tell you what the color looks like. I couldn't pick
- 13:46Speaker 1: it out on a chart. But man, it was just
- 13:50Speaker 1: this ugliness that that that you thought was insurmountable. But
- 13:56Speaker 1: over time, you know, it became well, no, we can
- 14:01Speaker 1: do this. And the Saints, you know, it helped us
- 14:05Speaker 1: get through that. It was sure and we you know,
- 14:08Speaker 1: we did it together. We had something that uh that
- 14:11Speaker 1: a lot of that I think some of the great
- 14:13Speaker 1: generations over the course of time have had, you know,
- 14:16Speaker 1: where they had this common thing to get behind, and
- 14:20Speaker 1: for for us, it was the it was the comeback,
- 14:24Speaker 1: and the Saints were a huge part of the comeback.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Johnny Blancher owns ye Old College in Drew Brees's favorite restaurant,
- 14:35Speaker 3: and it's on Carrollton. It's a beautiful story, one of
- 14:38Speaker 3: many with Drew and Shawn and and as Johnny says,
- 14:41Speaker 3: so many other players that impacted that were around town,
- 14:45Speaker 3: Pierre Thomas, Steve Gleason. I mean, the list goes on
- 14:48Speaker 3: and on, and it was great to see so many
- 14:50Speaker 3: players over the weekend that actually went to Canton, Ohio
- 14:54Speaker 3: to celebrate Drew, among others that couldn't make it and
- 14:57Speaker 3: talking about it on social media. I know you're running
- 15:01Speaker 3: you you know, show your look running a restaurant twenty
- 15:05Speaker 3: four to seven. You got more than one?
- 15:08Speaker 1: Are you?
- 15:09Speaker 3: Were you able to go to any Saints games?
- 15:12Speaker 2: Johnny?
- 15:13Speaker 1: Oh, sure, sure you. Uh we we had you know,
- 15:18Speaker 1: friends that would go and uh you know, I would.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I would try to get out and go with those
- 15:25Speaker 1: guys and guys and uh as often as possible. The we,
- 15:31Speaker 1: of course were I had a couple of the big
- 15:34Speaker 1: games and and that was that was huge along the
- 15:37Speaker 1: way the Green Day game that you know, and that
- 15:42Speaker 1: was that was a ton of fun. Uh So, yeah,
- 15:45Speaker 1: we were able to get away now and then, uh
- 15:48Speaker 1: but you know, mostly just watching and hoping, uh hoping
- 15:52Speaker 1: Drew would win so that uh so we could see
- 15:57Speaker 1: a big smile on his face, sure or soon after
- 16:00Speaker 1: you know, what was.
- 16:02Speaker 3: It like as as the Saints took off? So you
- 16:06Speaker 3: got to know him before he ever played a game,
- 16:08Speaker 3: and there was so much like it's interesting your story
- 16:12Speaker 3: in the city story was one of unrest. We don't
- 16:16Speaker 3: know what's going to happen, we don't know how this
- 16:18Speaker 3: is going to work. And Drew's coming off of an
- 16:20Speaker 3: injury in which he doesn't know if he's ever going.
- 16:23Speaker 2: To be what he was.
- 16:25Speaker 3: And so once he he realized he could do it
- 16:29Speaker 3: right and play in two thousand and six at a
- 16:32Speaker 3: high level NFC championship game all that and then once
- 16:35Speaker 3: y'all all realized that the hey, we're going to come
- 16:38Speaker 3: back and we're going to have success and we're going
- 16:40Speaker 3: to do this thing, what was it like three four
- 16:43Speaker 3: five years later after he had won a Lombardi Trophy
- 16:47Speaker 3: and he was still coming in ye old college in Johnny.
- 16:53Speaker 1: You know, it was still the same attitude. Uh, you know,
- 16:57Speaker 1: even after the Super Bowl, he's he had that uh,
- 17:04Speaker 1: that drive and you could still just see the energy
- 17:08Speaker 1: in him that it was a pursuit of h of
- 17:12Speaker 1: excellence and and so you know, it really didn't change
- 17:17Speaker 1: from the moment I met in the intensity level. You
- 17:19Speaker 1: could see in his eyes, the way he engaged, uh,
- 17:23Speaker 1: in the world, that that just never changed. There was
- 17:27Speaker 1: never this relaxation of that that comes from uh. Oh
- 17:31Speaker 1: I already I've been there, done that. You know, the guys,
- 17:35Speaker 1: the guy's special intensity level special. And you know, I
- 17:39Speaker 1: thought in his speech he did an unbelievable job of
- 17:42Speaker 1: of talking of giving a little bit of that progression
- 17:46Speaker 1: how he learned over time, and I had never heard
- 17:49Speaker 1: him speak about that. I really appreciated the uh, you know,
- 17:54Speaker 1: the little piece about being in in film and deciding
- 17:59Speaker 1: to take full responsibility. Sure, wow, you know, but that tracks.
- 18:05Speaker 1: I mean, that's what I saw. Any It was ultimate, uh,
- 18:11Speaker 1: ultimate level of intensity and focus. And I, oh, I'm
- 18:17Speaker 1: grateful that I got many moments with him.
- 18:22Speaker 2: You know, no doubt.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Johnny Blancher, owner of the Ye Old College in restaurant
- 18:30Speaker 3: on Carrollton, Drew Brees' favorite spot, and uh they became friends,
- 18:36Speaker 3: and I think for all of us it resonates that
- 18:39Speaker 3: Drew was just a regular guy when he would walk
- 18:42Speaker 3: in to Johnny's spot and stayed that way even through
- 18:46Speaker 3: all the success. Okay, so before we let you go,
- 18:51Speaker 3: we talk about food a lot on the show. And
- 18:56Speaker 3: by the way, my aunt owned restaurants Dante by the
- 18:59Speaker 3: River in New Orleans years ago and then Cafe at
- 19:03Speaker 3: Chaffealaiah which is now at Chaffealayah. So I grew up
- 19:06Speaker 3: going down there. Fantastic, Yeah, And I'm at to dive
- 19:10Speaker 3: into your place next time we uh we were.
- 19:14Speaker 1: We would love to have you, bro.
- 19:17Speaker 3: And so it means a lot to me just reading
- 19:19Speaker 3: the story. And I did as much research on you
- 19:21Speaker 3: as I could over the weekend. But I pulled up
- 19:26Speaker 3: the most recent menu I thought I could pull up
- 19:28Speaker 3: fried green tomatoes at do y'all still have that?
- 19:31Speaker 1: Yes? Absolutely, tomatoes and shrimp ram a lot.
- 19:34Speaker 3: As soon as I saw that, Johnny, I was like,
- 19:38Speaker 3: I'm in. It won Best of Show at the first
- 19:41Speaker 3: Annual Poe Boy Festival. Is this one of your more
- 19:45Speaker 3: popular items, Johnny?
- 19:46Speaker 1: It absolutely is. You know, we serve we've served it
- 19:49Speaker 1: as an appetizer for for many, many years, and uh,
- 19:53Speaker 1: you know, one day I just decided, let's put it
- 19:55Speaker 1: on a poe Boy too, and we ended up bentering
- 19:58Speaker 1: that into the first annual po Boy us in one Okay, Yeah,
- 20:03Speaker 1: it's a winner. Hot and cold contrast. You know, you
- 20:06Speaker 1: have the cold shrimp run a lot and you have
- 20:10Speaker 1: the piping hot fried green tomatoes under kneath, and it's
- 20:15Speaker 1: it's really a good, really great texture, a good great dish.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Jackson. Let's put the headsets down and just head down
- 20:21Speaker 3: I fifty five right now and uh and let Johnny
- 20:26Speaker 3: do several uh fried green tomato apps and Poe Boy
