- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Coming up on an NHL and Scripted were giving flowers
- 0:24Speaker 1: to Paul Maurice. Plus that's so guest Mike Scully, that's right,
- 0:27Speaker 1: former showrunner and writer of The Simpsons, a diehard Kings fan.
- 0:32Speaker 1: He's got stories for days with hockey and involving the
- 0:34Speaker 1: La Kings and the Simpsons. Plus Ovi's gold number one
- 0:37Speaker 1: thousand and turning cough Please interesting story involving Cole Coughfield,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and that would begin. Yeah, well that's kind of the
- 0:45Speaker 1: reference I think that was making. Do you have a
- 0:47Speaker 1: JD POV? I know it was a big hit last week?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Maybe a pov out of the gate.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Oh, it was an enormous hit. I mean I it
- 0:54Speaker 2: was an enormous hit. I have one of two, either
- 0:56Speaker 2: Darren Radish getting paid and Darren Radish not being Just
- 1:02Speaker 2: because he's playing with Kucherov doesn't mean Kutrov doesn't need
- 1:07Speaker 2: Darren Radish, And if not for Darren Radish, Koutrov wouldn't
- 1:11Speaker 2: be having the season he's having the fact that because
- 1:14Speaker 2: not anybody can just play on a top power play
- 1:17Speaker 2: unit and just be with the best players in the
- 1:19Speaker 2: world and be like, oh yeah, it's just plug and
- 1:21Speaker 2: play and it works. It's very difficult to play with
- 1:23Speaker 2: those guys. I go back to his goal last game,
- 1:26Speaker 2: picked it up off the left skate, beautiful top shelf shot.
- 1:29Speaker 2: So fuck all you guys saying that Darren Radish doesn't
- 1:32Speaker 2: deserve that money because he deserves the payper.
- 1:34Speaker 3: All right, A good POV out of the gate.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I just mentioned that I was at the Madison Square Guarden.
- 1:39Speaker 1: The loan game on the schedule on Monday was the
- 1:41Speaker 1: Ottawa Center's Face and the Rangers as a must win Nate.
- 1:44Speaker 3: The Rangers put up nine shots.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I mean, that's the fewest shots I had since Gump
- 1:48Speaker 1: Worsley was playing in net Johnny Busick was back in
- 1:50Speaker 1: the day in the nineteen fifties. So it was an
- 1:52Speaker 1: awful game for the Rangers perspective. I am curious from
- 1:55Speaker 1: your perspective, how did you like playing at the garden,
- 1:57Speaker 1: because while we were there, I was staying to Chris
- 1:59Speaker 1: Pronger john Ford's lison every time I come to MSG
- 2:01Speaker 1: and it mainly go for Knicks games for my son.
- 2:03Speaker 1: But I said, it's love it or hey, really, so
- 2:05Speaker 1: I love it in some ways because I'm like, it
- 2:06Speaker 1: is massive Square Guard and you feel the history.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I love the open Bobb O'Riley hits, the Rangers come
- 2:10Speaker 3: out like it's it's great entertainment.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I do feel like I'm on Broadway, great anthem always,
- 2:14Speaker 1: but at the same time, it's old.
- 2:16Speaker 3: It's the crapit there's like one elevator. Who the hell?
- 2:18Speaker 1: Where do you think an elevator go to an arena?
- 2:19Speaker 1: Seats aren't as good decaying a little bit. Where are
- 2:21Speaker 1: you at when you played at Madison Square Guard? Did
- 2:23Speaker 1: you feel the chills or did you just say, eh, overrated?
- 2:26Speaker 4: No chills. It's MSG.
- 2:28Speaker 5: I there in Montreal are the two places that I
- 2:31Speaker 5: love playing on the road. And I mean I scored
- 2:33Speaker 5: my first NHL goal at MSG, so on on Hank
- 2:36Speaker 5: So I mean that's yeah. The MSG's a special place.
- 2:39Speaker 5: I mean when you go when you go in there,
- 2:42Speaker 5: it feels like you're an auditorium.
- 2:43Speaker 4: I mean you look up and it's showing.
- 2:44Speaker 5: There's super and there's TV stars and I mean it's, uh,
- 2:48Speaker 5: that place is a vibe.
- 2:49Speaker 4: It's a great place to be.
- 2:51Speaker 3: JD you with that. Do you like playing in New York?
- 2:53Speaker 4: No?
- 2:53Speaker 2: It's dark. It's yeah, the fans are far away. But
- 2:57Speaker 2: that's just me. Nate. You're new here. I'm a hater,
- 3:02Speaker 2: you know this. I hate on a lot of things.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I love the I'll say this, the walk up the
- 3:09Speaker 2: ramp does not disappoint. It is very iconic. There you
- 3:13Speaker 2: go and the walk into the rink and when you
- 3:15Speaker 2: walk up the ramp and then as you're turning the
- 3:18Speaker 2: corner you see the zamboni doors and you walk out
- 3:21Speaker 2: and you just go check the ice. That is a
- 3:23Speaker 2: very cool, incredible moment. After that once around the ice
- 3:25Speaker 2: after the first game, Yeah, stinks.
- 3:28Speaker 3: It's just tauch. How many players could you say?
- 3:30Speaker 1: You go into arena and you have to go to
- 3:31Speaker 1: the elevator to floor five and then take a right
- 3:34Speaker 1: and you go see the Zamboni's.
- 3:36Speaker 3: And then floor ten is the press box and your
- 3:38Speaker 3: way the hell up.
- 3:39Speaker 2: There only New York, Yo, Frank, No, I'm not.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Gonna do it right now. Let's let's hand coach the
- 3:45Speaker 3: heart and your boy.
- 3:46Speaker 1: All season long, we've been talking about McDavid McKinnon Celebrinia
- 3:49Speaker 1: for the art. Nikita kucher Off has been listening the
- 3:51Speaker 1: AHL's first start of the week, fourteen points in his
- 3:54Speaker 1: last five games, now leads the league in points. Tuesday
- 3:57Speaker 1: Night became just the eighth player in hockey history to
- 3:59Speaker 1: record three straight one hundred and twenty points seasons, after McDavid, Gretz,
- 4:04Speaker 1: Mario Lemue, Phillips, Posito, my guy, Marcel Dion, all time
- 4:08Speaker 1: great La King, Gila Flora, and Paul Coffee. Even with
- 4:11Speaker 1: injuries to Victor have been in braden Point, Koutrov has
- 4:14Speaker 1: led TAMPAA one of the best records in the league.
- 4:16Speaker 1: You've long said for years, now, Jad the Koutroff is underappreciated.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Is this the year he gets his second Heart Trophy?
- 4:23Speaker 2: If he doesn't get it, I stormed the capitol and
- 4:26Speaker 2: I riot. It's a full riot. I don't know where
- 4:29Speaker 2: I'm gonna storm what capital where, but I'm storming something
- 4:32Speaker 2: and I'm riding because too much disrespect on the name
- 4:36Speaker 2: of Nikita Koutrov, people even putting other guys in the category.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I get, you can, you can go to the Celebrini route.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I'm a huge fan of Sealabrini. I get you can
- 4:45Speaker 2: go to the McDavid route. But what he does at
- 4:47Speaker 2: the winger position and what he has done this season
- 4:50Speaker 2: is absolutely astonishing. The pace he's on. This team was
- 4:55Speaker 2: missing every single player, it felt like, at the start
- 4:58Speaker 2: of the year, and he was just chugging along. He
- 5:01Speaker 2: gets he's very underappreciated, and I think he should have
- 5:05Speaker 2: got it last year. I think he gets it this year.
- 5:08Speaker 2: And if he doesn't, Nate, I'm I'm doing something to
- 5:13Speaker 2: something somewhere. I don't know where. I'll figure it out
- 5:15Speaker 2: when the time comes.
- 5:17Speaker 5: I will join you. If that's the case. I'm not
- 5:18Speaker 5: gonna hate on you on this one, because I agree
- 5:20Speaker 5: he's the Yes, he has to be the MVP.
- 5:25Speaker 4: You know.
- 5:25Speaker 5: Listen, I go back to my playing career and I
- 5:28Speaker 5: was lucky enough for about five years to work with
- 5:31Speaker 5: Adam Oates and Ots. You know, this is one of
- 5:36Speaker 5: his guys, and you know the way that Cooch works
- 5:40Speaker 5: on his game. The little things like the drills that
- 5:42Speaker 5: we would do, you know, are very mundane. You know,
- 5:44Speaker 5: simple things like rim around the boards. I'm sure you've
- 5:46Speaker 5: heard he works on that rim around the boards constantly,
- 5:48Speaker 5: over and over and over again. You know, OTS would
- 5:51Speaker 5: use him as an example and talk about him and
- 5:54Speaker 5: the way he adamotates a Hall of Famer talks about
- 5:57Speaker 5: Nikhir Kutrov. He talks about him as one of the
- 5:59Speaker 5: greats already and you know, coming from him and the
- 6:04Speaker 5: way he talks about him, and he uses him in
- 6:06Speaker 5: every drill he's as examples. I mean, how players want
- 6:09Speaker 5: to watch him. He's he's a perfectionist. He is, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 5: I saw it when he came up as a young
- 6:13Speaker 5: guy when I was there, and this guy, I mean,
- 6:16Speaker 5: he is, he is the MVP.
- 6:18Speaker 4: The way he makes everyone better.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Uh.
- 6:20Speaker 4: You know, you mentioned Taylor.
- 6:21Speaker 5: Radish JD and I agree with you on that, and
- 6:24Speaker 5: I think part of that is Cooch is making these
- 6:26Speaker 5: guys better. He's working with these guys after practice and
- 6:29Speaker 5: working on these drills in certain scenarios. Yeah, you know
- 6:32Speaker 5: he's doing that. So I think it's a credit to
- 6:35Speaker 5: those guys. But you know, Nikita Kutrov, he makes everyone
- 6:38Speaker 5: better around him.
- 6:40Speaker 2: He's study I mean he sorry, he studies ad Man
- 6:44Speaker 2: for a kick it to you. He studies the opposition's
- 6:46Speaker 2: d for their tendencies before like every game. Like he
- 6:49Speaker 2: is a freak hockey nerd.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And unfortunately he's not gonna have Victor Hedmon with him.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Thirty five or old last up year.
- 6:55Speaker 3: During March nineteen sixty two win of.
- 6:57Speaker 1: The Conocks, he only played four forty four of ice
- 6:59Speaker 1: time before the party with a reported illness six foot seven.
- 7:02Speaker 3: He also missed the last three games with the ailments.
- 7:04Speaker 1: So he's taking a temporary leave of absence from the
- 7:07Speaker 1: team for personal reasons. No further details to be shared.
- 7:10Speaker 1: The team asked has provacy be respected at this time.
- 7:13Speaker 1: He's only appeared in thirty three games this season. He
- 7:15Speaker 1: missed twelve games and then undisclosed injury November, another twenty
- 7:18Speaker 1: two games undergoing elbow surgery in December again, and it's
- 7:21Speaker 1: unfair to spect that exactly what's happening. But the bottom
- 7:23Speaker 1: line is this is a significant absence. I know they've
- 7:26Speaker 1: been very successful that in this season, there's second in
- 7:28Speaker 1: the Atlantic Division, two points behind the Sabers, but no headman.
- 7:31Speaker 3: That's concerning.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean he's their captain, he's their leader. I
- 7:35Speaker 5: think he's their emotional leader as well, and whenever you
- 7:38Speaker 5: don't have him in the lineup, it's it's it's going
- 7:40Speaker 5: to be a missing piece that they that they need.
- 7:43Speaker 4: But you know you said it.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Though, they were able to sustain a pretty damn good
- 7:48Speaker 5: record for a long time without some key guys, and
- 7:52Speaker 5: their decore is I think one of the best in
- 7:55Speaker 5: the league. And if there's a silver lining of this,
- 7:58Speaker 5: and I hope everything's okay, I mean the Tampa Bay
- 8:00Speaker 5: Lighting will get arrested Victor Hedman in the playoffs and
- 8:03Speaker 5: I think that's a bonus.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it is the only thing. And again
- 8:10Speaker 2: I hope he's okay, and you know, he's a great
- 8:13Speaker 2: human being. But I don't know. My weird take is,
- 8:17Speaker 2: does this does this Darren Radish season and JJ Moser?
- 8:22Speaker 2: Does this make Headman a little expendable in terms of
- 8:25Speaker 2: trading this offseason? You know Breezebaw has done it before
- 8:29Speaker 2: with Stamcos emotional leader or not. I think, like you know,
- 8:33Speaker 2: and I'm not saying that, like you know, I don't
- 8:35Speaker 2: know what he has going on, and hopefully he's healthy,
- 8:37Speaker 2: and like I said, everything is I'm just putting on
- 8:40Speaker 2: my GM hat for the end of the season. And
- 8:44Speaker 2: you know they have a chance to win a Cup.
- 8:46Speaker 2: But the season they've had in his absence is there.
- 8:50Speaker 2: You know, you pay Radish or you let him walk?
- 8:54Speaker 2: Do you maybe move Headman? I don't know, Just to
- 8:56Speaker 2: kind of you know, put him in a place where
- 8:59Speaker 2: he's he's happy and healthy again. I don't know. This
- 9:02Speaker 2: is just me speculating. That's what I do.
- 9:04Speaker 3: That's listen.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Don't you think it's a little premature. JD had powerful
- 9:09Speaker 1: the Lighting. This feels a little premature to deal them.
- 9:12Speaker 1: It felt coming a little more.
- 9:13Speaker 4: No.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Yeah, premature ejaculation and premature takes. That's my thing. Okay,
- 9:17Speaker 2: I mean that's stop.
- 9:19Speaker 3: It's certainly one way of looking at it.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Stop. I don't do that anymore anymore.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It wasn't an issue. We got to see Alice on
- 9:26Speaker 1: the phone. Everything's okay now, Yeah, we're all right.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Just breathe, just breathe.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Meantime, McDavid mcdisappointed another likely heart filens this season. McDavid
- 9:35Speaker 1: reached two filists in one like Tuesday against Utah, four
- 9:38Speaker 1: hundred goals and twelve hundred points in the same game.
- 9:41Speaker 3: That not all as well to Oilers Land.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Following comments last week from McDavid referring to the Pacific
- 9:45Speaker 1: Division race as a quote pillow fight and heaping praise
- 9:48Speaker 1: on John Cooper and the Lightning for their perfect system,
- 9:51Speaker 1: he later clarified he wasn't taking any shots to oilers
- 9:54Speaker 1: with two years left in his current contract. Though, Dad,
- 9:56Speaker 1: if you're an oiler's face, you look concern McDavid's popping
- 9:58Speaker 1: off publicly.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Absolutely, I think you. I think you for sure was
- 10:03Speaker 5: was taking shots. I mean, at the end of the day,
- 10:06Speaker 5: they're they're on the clock. He's on the clock, everyone's
- 10:08Speaker 5: on the clock. I mean he's only got you know,
- 10:10Speaker 5: he signed a short term extension, and I think it's
- 10:15Speaker 5: shots fired. It's hey, listen, like, look where Tampa is that.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Look how they're coach. They're a well oiled machine and
- 10:23Speaker 5: we're not. We're we're not doing that. We haven't made stride.
- 10:26Speaker 5: So I don't know where you stand, JD, but this
- 10:28Speaker 5: to me is definitely shots fired.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's tough because this team's always like you're
- 10:36Speaker 2: always like, okay, they're this drama, there's the theatrics, and
- 10:41Speaker 2: then they go and they they they're playing all of
- 10:43Speaker 2: us and they run to the Stanley Cup finals and
- 10:45Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised if they do that again. But yeah,
- 10:48Speaker 2: there seems to be the room's a little bit different
- 10:50Speaker 2: than the this year than the years past. I think
- 10:52Speaker 2: the Corey Perry apsence maybe leads to that, but I don't,
- 10:56Speaker 2: you know. I listened back to it and I was like,
- 10:58Speaker 2: he was heaping a ton of praise on Tampa. I
- 11:01Speaker 2: think he's very He's been more critical and so is
- 11:03Speaker 2: now Block and Right of this team than they've ever
- 11:06Speaker 2: have been in the past few years. So there's obviously
- 11:09Speaker 2: sending notes to each other or they're maybe trying to
- 11:13Speaker 2: get no Block to take more ownership. But I mean,
- 11:16Speaker 2: they've been to two finals together, so I'm like, I think,
- 11:19Speaker 2: you know. And the other thing is like, if McDavid
- 11:21Speaker 2: had these issues and I can't believe I'm agreeing with
- 11:25Speaker 2: Craig Button. I heard him talk, but it's like he
- 11:27Speaker 2: signed that to your deal. He signed that to your deal.
- 11:31Speaker 2: He could have just not signed and walked if it's
- 11:33Speaker 2: kind of this bad. So I feel like it was
- 11:35Speaker 2: maybe taken out of context.
- 11:36Speaker 3: But when now.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Block got the job, or when said McDavid loves him,
- 11:39Speaker 1: that's why they that's what he got.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Yeah, So I just think it's kind of he's frustrated.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I would be too, but they come out and you know,
- 11:46Speaker 2: they've beat the brakes off of Utah and he comes
- 11:49Speaker 2: out and he's great again. So I always feel like
- 11:51Speaker 2: sometimes he's got like the little Jordan in him where
- 11:54Speaker 2: he just got it. He's got to make he's got
- 11:56Speaker 2: to kind of make get himself fired up. Him and
- 11:59Speaker 2: Leon they gotta you know, it's just something weird going
- 12:02Speaker 2: on in Eiler Land. And I never count him out
- 12:04Speaker 2: because we'll probably be sitting here being like, oh, wow,
- 12:07Speaker 2: they're in the Stanley Cup Finals again. Shocker. Yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Yeah, last year JD and Nate and I, well, last year,
- 12:13Speaker 3: I should say Nate, j D and I kept calling
- 12:15Speaker 3: against the Oiler. So we're not gonna make that mistake again.
- 12:17Speaker 2: No, never again.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Well, we'll have them going all the way just to appeal.
- 12:21Speaker 4: We'll join you guys. It's hard to go.
- 12:22Speaker 2: We You don't talk shit against the Oilers because you
- 12:25Speaker 2: don't know bulletin board material.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Yeah, let's get to turn and cough. In addition to Kutrov,
- 12:30Speaker 3: habsring Or Cole Coff, who was.
- 12:31Speaker 1: In the league's third Star of the Week after collecting
- 12:34Speaker 1: four goals eight points in three games, were coming the
- 12:36Speaker 1: first Canadian to scored forty goals in a season since
- 12:39Speaker 1: Vinnie Donfu's in ninety three ninety four. But the real
- 12:41Speaker 1: story might be Montreal's top line Coffield, nick Suzuki and
- 12:44Speaker 1: you're right Leftkowski.
- 12:46Speaker 3: They don't have a nickname yet, maybe called Zukski.
- 12:48Speaker 1: But the trio has combined for thirty three points in
- 12:51Speaker 1: the last six games. Tell this is all you. This
- 12:53Speaker 1: is clearly your bias and favoritism coming out. Is this
- 12:56Speaker 1: right now the most dominant line in the NHL? Go ahead,
- 12:58Speaker 1: tell you take it?
- 13:00Speaker 2: Oh yes, wait, I might have left. It's not it's
- 13:05Speaker 2: not boot cocky, it's slav cocky.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Oh discussed.
- 13:10Speaker 6: I'm not sure that's gonna take. But no, they've been
- 13:13Speaker 6: carrying the team. They were separated for a long stretch
- 13:16Speaker 6: this season, and they took a bit of a dip.
- 13:18Speaker 6: They put Slak Slavkovski back on that top line.
- 13:22Speaker 4: They've been incredible.
- 13:23Speaker 6: They've been making like they're getting the number one defensive
- 13:26Speaker 6: matchup every game.
- 13:27Speaker 2: They don't have a second line.
- 13:28Speaker 6: It's just these guys and they're putting up huge numbers
- 13:31Speaker 6: night after night for the last two three weeks now
- 13:34Speaker 6: and taking this team into the playoffs. I you know,
- 13:36Speaker 6: you could say maybe that Nietzsche McKinnon lecanon line in
- 13:40Speaker 6: Colorado is better, but they're a class of the league.
- 13:43Speaker 6: The Canadians Yes, I'm biased. Yes, I may have you know,
- 13:47Speaker 6: a little habs talk into the pod this week, but
- 13:50Speaker 6: I know I can't find too many lines in the
- 13:52Speaker 6: league that are doing more offensively than these guys right now.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yeah, deservedly so, it deservedly so. The last eight nine games,
- 13:59Speaker 2: they've been fantastic. I mean, Coffield scores missed a Saturday.
- 14:04Speaker 2: He scores the more most goals in the league. He
- 14:07Speaker 2: has right now when when his team is tied, so
- 14:10Speaker 2: with the opposition he scores. He's clutch. He's clutched, so
- 14:13Speaker 2: slav cocky. That line is, uh, is dynamic, and again
- 14:18Speaker 2: it's a good mix of everything. I think Slavkovsky went
- 14:20Speaker 2: to that second line try to lead his own line.
- 14:23Speaker 2: It worked for a little bit. They do have Oliver
- 14:24Speaker 2: Kappanan who's had a great season for Rookietings at twenty
- 14:27Speaker 2: one goals. But this is a team that's a little
- 14:30Speaker 2: bit dangerous. I don't see them going far in the playoffs.
- 14:32Speaker 2: But uh, this is a team that's kind of in
- 14:35Speaker 2: the right it's going the right way. And I think
- 14:38Speaker 2: I think Nate gets to fifty before him, but I
- 14:41Speaker 2: see him getting fifty this year. He's getting fifty Wow.
- 14:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I think they both get fifty for sure. I
- 14:48Speaker 5: agree with Tal. I think it's the best line in hockey.
- 14:51Speaker 5: I think that. I mean a big reason why is
- 14:53Speaker 5: Nick Suzuki. I feel like he's the kind of the
- 14:56Speaker 5: driver a little bit.
- 14:59Speaker 4: What what what's the face? JD.
- 15:01Speaker 3: He's just keep going. I just like sometimes he was
- 15:03Speaker 3: looking at tells make faces.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I'm like, best line in hockey.
- 15:08Speaker 4: I think they are.
- 15:09Speaker 5: I think that just because of the fact, like you
- 15:11Speaker 5: mentioned it, Jdy, it's the dynamic of how they all
- 15:14Speaker 5: compliment each other. And I think what you said, Tal,
- 15:18Speaker 5: I mean, I think with getting new hook back, it
- 15:21Speaker 5: made Marty Saint Louis think Okay, let's let's slot these
- 15:24Speaker 5: lines back together. This is what they were to begin
- 15:26Speaker 5: the season, and we need this first line to be going.
- 15:29Speaker 4: And they've done that. I mean, they've been all world.
- 15:34Speaker 3: Certainly happened. But then that gets to the other side
- 15:36Speaker 3: of the ledger, of which teams on the downswing? I
- 15:38Speaker 3: mentioned the Rangers, how about this, Jdy? They honored me
- 15:41Speaker 3: ka Zebnishad's one.
- 15:42Speaker 2: We're talking Rangers right now.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Just one one quick thought.
- 15:45Speaker 1: The fact listen, you played seven hundred NHL games imagine
- 15:48Speaker 1: if before play, maybe they did before playing that game,
- 15:50Speaker 1: they honored you. That's what happened with Mika. He hadn't
- 15:52Speaker 1: played a game one thousand. Nobly you played the thousandth game.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Then the next game they go by the way and
- 15:56Speaker 1: honor this achievement.
- 15:58Speaker 3: He did it. They arned him before the game.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Now, I guess there's a little bit logical to playing
- 16:01Speaker 1: Autowie team that drafted him.
- 16:03Speaker 3: But talk with the guy. Clearly was going hard the
- 16:05Speaker 3: last couple of games.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Going into game one thousand, you're not gonna get hurt
- 16:07Speaker 1: knowing nine ninety eight, nine ninety nine, even one thousand
- 16:10Speaker 1: he was barely he was malliing him for much of
- 16:12Speaker 1: the game.
- 16:12Speaker 3: He's like, well, I can't get hurts one thousands of game.
- 16:15Speaker 2: So yeah, let's talk about Matthew Shaeffer. Last game.
- 16:17Speaker 4: He was.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Incredible. I mean, Matthew Schaeffer should get Norris votes and
- 16:24Speaker 2: heart votes right now, the heart votes if they make
- 16:28Speaker 2: it in the playoffs. You don't think.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Islander aren't going to make the playoffs?
- 16:31Speaker 2: Is they?
- 16:31Speaker 3: Right now?
- 16:31Speaker 2: They might be a thirty two minute who said that
- 16:33Speaker 2: Pronger your friend?
- 16:34Speaker 1: No, I'm gonna say it right now I'm also gonna
- 16:36Speaker 1: say the Red Wings aren't gonna make it.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's low hanging fruit.
- 16:39Speaker 3: But this is another March collapse.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Three five into their last ten games, they've slipped on
- 16:43Speaker 1: the playoffs about they held for most of the season,
- 16:45Speaker 1: and Nate I talked to Tom McClellan in December and.
- 16:47Speaker 3: He was like, can't have another March issue. We've had
- 16:49Speaker 3: March Swon's lost.
- 16:50Speaker 1: It happening again, bed Wings or Eyes are playing year nine?
- 16:54Speaker 3: How many years have to wait? If I'm from hockey.
- 16:55Speaker 4: Town, I don't know. This is time.
- 16:59Speaker 5: I mean when Larkin went down, that was when it
- 17:01Speaker 5: was like inevitable for hers. It hurt him back, and
- 17:04Speaker 5: they all kind of you could feel their organization, even
- 17:07Speaker 5: on the outside looking at it felt like they were
- 17:09Speaker 5: all taking a big deep breath, knowing almost that March
- 17:12Speaker 5: was going to go bad for them, and it has.
- 17:14Speaker 5: I mean, they they're they're finding ways to lose right now,
- 17:17Speaker 5: and they're they're in hockey games. They're in the game
- 17:19Speaker 5: last night with with Ottawa, but they just they can't
- 17:22Speaker 5: find ways to win right now. And they're in a
- 17:24Speaker 5: tough spot because you have the other teams winning Ottawa
- 17:27Speaker 5: was Auto was moving up the ranks right now.
- 17:29Speaker 2: So what a story? Autawa is? What a story?
- 17:34Speaker 3: Has been a good team all season. They have thirty
- 17:37Speaker 3: second in save percentage.
- 17:38Speaker 1: If they'd had Cooker Golton and they would easily be
- 17:40Speaker 1: topp through the Atlantic. Instead, they're fighting tooth and nail
- 17:43Speaker 1: for a wildcard spot. They're gonna make the playoffs as well. Columbus,
- 17:45Speaker 1: Columbus is unstoppable. Columbus is my highest ceiling. But Outawa
- 17:49Speaker 1: if they can get in, I mean, look at look
- 17:51Speaker 1: at their back end. Sanderson out, Shabbat out, Carter Yakham,
- 17:54Speaker 1: Chuck Yeah, Zoo played twenty five, Clevin played twenty eight.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Good for Tyler Cleven Spence played twenty six.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Good. Good on them for I. That's a great story.
- 18:07Speaker 2: I think Detroit needs to miss again and just let's
- 18:10Speaker 2: blow the whole thing up and let's bring in a
- 18:13Speaker 2: new fresh voice. Because really, I don't know if it's
- 18:16Speaker 2: just the bright lights, but you know, I I like
- 18:18Speaker 2: the way Ottawa team plays better than Detroit. They're a
- 18:21Speaker 2: little I don't know, the little light for me.
- 18:24Speaker 4: They defend well. Autawa defends well, don't they.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Like it's so hard you're right, Travis Green shout out.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, tal this Ottawa team, listen, then they got star.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Part of JD's point, if you want to, Brady could
- 18:36Speaker 1: chuck him stuts on the playoffs, pull him for Ottawa
- 18:38Speaker 1: back to back years in the playoffs.
- 18:40Speaker 6: Well, let's let's be honest here. How many of you
- 18:42Speaker 6: guys counted out the Senators when Sanderson went down?
- 18:45Speaker 3: Absolutely?
- 18:47Speaker 6: You know, they've had so many injuries on that back
- 18:49Speaker 6: you were just talking about it, but.
- 18:50Speaker 2: The fact that they're no, I'm actually listened. When Shabbah
- 18:54Speaker 2: went down to I was like, well, they're not going
- 18:55Speaker 2: to win this and they go went back to back games. Yeah,
- 19:00Speaker 2: keep going.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Tell I believe there was seven and to tell us,
- 19:02Speaker 1: I believe seven and two that Jake Sanderson one defenseman.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 19:05Speaker 6: I mean, who who picture that happened? What's been the obviously,
- 19:08Speaker 6: the goaltending has been the issue all season. That seems
- 19:11Speaker 6: to have tightened up, But just when they seem to
- 19:13Speaker 6: be rounding into form, they're ready to make a run
- 19:15Speaker 6: of the playoffs, and their top d man goes down
- 19:18Speaker 6: and they've just been having injury after injury on the
- 19:20Speaker 6: back end. I mean, what do you see has been
- 19:22Speaker 6: the key with all these injuries basically. Now, I mean
- 19:25Speaker 6: I I don't think anyone here has any doubt they're
- 19:27Speaker 6: making the playoffs. Like they have a full head of
- 19:29Speaker 6: team the postseason.
- 19:31Speaker 2: They have a tough schedule, yeah, coming down the stretch.
- 19:34Speaker 2: They have a tough tough schedule down the stretch.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Listen, I got Columbus third of the Metro and Boston
- 19:39Speaker 1: Ottawa of the wild cards.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Oh, Columbus third of the I have Columbus is two
- 19:43Speaker 2: in the Metro for me. Nice, They're gonna be firmly
- 19:45Speaker 2: two nineteen wins for Bonus already he matched Everson's nineteen
- 19:50Speaker 2: wins Nate and Columbus is two for me. Pitt I
- 19:55Speaker 2: want to say Pits three. Yeah, and then I'm gonna go.
- 19:59Speaker 2: It's a big game for Boston. Their next game here
- 20:02Speaker 2: against Boston tonight.
- 20:03Speaker 5: But yeah, I'm with you. I think it's gonna be
- 20:08Speaker 5: five Atlantic and three Metro. It's gonna be that exactly, Boston, Boston, Ottawa,
- 20:14Speaker 5: and Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Spot and Columbus no isles. I know
- 20:19Speaker 5: I hate saying that too.
- 20:20Speaker 2: But they're the worst defensive metrics hits.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Exactly, and watching last night against Chicago. I don't know.
- 20:26Speaker 5: I'm not a believer in them right now. I Columbus, Pittsburgh,
- 20:30Speaker 5: those teams, the way Columbus is playing right now, I mean,
- 20:33Speaker 5: once they get in they could go they can make
- 20:37Speaker 5: some hay like they could be going deep.
- 20:38Speaker 4: You never know what to say.
- 20:39Speaker 1: To Night's point, I like the teams that I know
- 20:40Speaker 1: can actually do something. If Columbus gets in there, they
- 20:42Speaker 1: could go on a run.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Ottawa could go.
- 20:44Speaker 4: In a run. Yeah.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Islanders, No, they're not going in to run. They just
- 20:48Speaker 2: had what a slow start last game. God, they're gonna
- 20:51Speaker 2: be kicking themselves for that. They had was it? They
- 20:54Speaker 2: had like twenty inner slot shots to five for Chicago.
- 20:57Speaker 2: It was, but they just bad start that'll kill you.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Took them lightly. You can't take them lightly, That's true.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Last here, then we'll get to our special guest Mike
- 21:06Speaker 1: Scully of The Simpsons, Alexander Ovechkin another day in the Milestone.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Just the second player in hockey history, Dwayne Gretzkin has
- 21:13Speaker 1: scored a thousand combined goals in the regular season in playoffs.
- 21:16Speaker 7: E J.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Raddick at the call with Kevin Weeks.
- 21:18Speaker 1: He'll also finish the season, Obi will more than twenty
- 21:20Speaker 1: five goals, tying Gordy Howe for the all time record
- 21:23Speaker 1: twentieth twenty five goal season. And a fun little detail
- 21:27Speaker 1: about that historic goal against the Avs, set up by
- 21:29Speaker 1: Washington defensive prospect Cole Hudson, who got his first career
- 21:32Speaker 1: assist on the play. I know it has n't been
- 21:34Speaker 1: a great season JD for Alexandervenchen. I know the Capitals
- 21:37Speaker 1: aren't going anywhere. I believe he'll retire after the season,
- 21:40Speaker 1: But a thousand goals combined sick.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Hey, he's the greatest goal scorer of all time. I
- 21:46Speaker 2: just think it ends on that, and I like that
- 21:49Speaker 2: you finally come around. I did say Ovi was retiring
- 21:52Speaker 2: at the end of last year. After this year, he's
- 21:55Speaker 2: going back to Russia. I think he got his thousand.
- 21:57Speaker 2: You could see the elation when he got that one,
- 21:59Speaker 2: Like it was kind I think it might have been
- 22:01Speaker 2: on his list. But you know, kudos to Washington for
- 22:05Speaker 2: seeing like what they had and being like, I don't
- 22:07Speaker 2: think we have enough in moving on from John Carlson
- 22:10Speaker 2: and kind of showing everybody this is the changing of
- 22:11Speaker 2: the guard. But ov Man, congratulations. I mean, he's he's
- 22:16Speaker 2: just he's the greatest goal sert of all time period
- 22:18Speaker 2: point exclamation.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I second that.
- 22:22Speaker 5: I mean, it's just incredible that he's still able to.
- 22:26Speaker 5: I mean, he's still scoring this many goals every year
- 22:28Speaker 5: and the way he does it, And I mean, the
- 22:31Speaker 5: best part about it is what I love about Ovi
- 22:33Speaker 5: is even now when he scores, he still gets excited,
- 22:35Speaker 5: is as excited as he did when.
- 22:37Speaker 4: He first scored his very first goal. It's the same
- 22:39Speaker 4: reaction and I love that, and.
- 22:43Speaker 5: It is it's it's almost a little sad in a
- 22:45Speaker 5: way because you know, Washington with caps. You just think
- 22:47Speaker 5: of Carlson and Ov and all these guys and now,
- 22:49Speaker 5: like like Jad said, it's a changing of the guard.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Still to cout Mike Scully of The Simpsons, He's got
- 22:54Speaker 1: stories about Krusty the Clown, Lisa on Ice, and about
- 22:58Speaker 1: running for some of the most popular shows in the universe.
- 23:01Speaker 1: That's Mike Scully. Noady Kings Fan coming up next this
- 23:04Speaker 1: on NHL and scripted Our Next Guest, a legendary TV
- 23:20Speaker 1: writer and producer, served as executive producer and show warning
- 23:24Speaker 1: for The Simpsons from nineteen ninety seven to two thousand
- 23:26Speaker 1: and one and worked in other classic shows like Everyone
- 23:29Speaker 1: Loves Raymond and Parks and Recreation. He is also co
- 23:32Speaker 1: creator of Duncanville and co developed the Napoleon Dynamite animated
- 23:35Speaker 1: series and as Other credits include Shifting Gears, Rail, The
- 23:39Speaker 1: Carmichael Show, The Pits, and The New Normal. More important,
- 23:42Speaker 1: he is a diehard Kings fan. It is Mike Scully, Mike, welcome, unscripted.
- 23:46Speaker 7: Great to see you, Hey, nice to see all you guys.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Let's start with the important stuff. You're taking the Kings
- 23:53Speaker 1: this season? And where do they go? Once Andree Copetar
- 23:55Speaker 1: rides the zamboni into the sunset.
- 23:58Speaker 7: Where do they go?
- 24:02Speaker 8: Maybe into the first round after he's gone.
- 24:07Speaker 7: I think it's panerent tine man.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Yeah, this year, the like you said, it is probably
- 24:12Speaker 1: a fifty to fifty year a playoff team.
- 24:14Speaker 8: You feel like, honestly it's not looking great, you know,
- 24:19Speaker 8: but the whole division though, so it's it's you couldn't
- 24:22Speaker 8: you couldn't ask for like a more of a contest
- 24:24Speaker 8: to deliberately lose something. Uh so they might still squeak in,
- 24:29Speaker 8: but I don't know beyond that, it doesn't look good.
- 24:32Speaker 2: It's it's been coined a pillow fight, which is uh
- 24:36Speaker 2: was definitely uh it was. It was well categorized. But
- 24:39Speaker 2: I want to ask you last week, our colleague here,
- 24:42Speaker 2: Nate Thompson said, without hesitation, mind you, and with the
- 24:47Speaker 2: biggest balls I've ever seen, said that Count Copeatar was
- 24:50Speaker 2: the greatest king of all time. Where do you stand
- 24:53Speaker 2: on that? And give me some Copeitar memories?
- 24:56Speaker 1: Just blasphemous, by the way, to Marcel Dion, Go ahead, Mike.
- 25:03Speaker 7: First of all, I think I would agree with Nate
- 25:05Speaker 7: on that.
- 25:06Speaker 8: Whoa yeah, yeah, you know, over like the scope of
- 25:11Speaker 8: a twenty years. Yeah, in terms of what he meant
- 25:14Speaker 8: to the team. I remember actually seeing him at his
- 25:18Speaker 8: first camp and I didn't know anything about him, and
- 25:21Speaker 8: I just saw him out in the ice without knowing
- 25:24Speaker 8: who he was, and I asked the guy sitting next
- 25:26Speaker 8: to me. He's like, who's that kid out there? He's
- 25:28Speaker 8: really good, and he explained to me who he was.
- 25:33Speaker 8: But it didn't seem like he was a lock to
- 25:35Speaker 8: make the team the first year, if I'm not mistaken.
- 25:39Speaker 8: But yeah, he's meant so much to the team. I
- 25:42Speaker 8: think just the kind of quiet leadership and class and
- 25:46Speaker 8: you know that he plays that very like Patrice bergeron
- 25:49Speaker 8: game and you know he's been kind of a just
- 25:52Speaker 8: a steady, calming influence on the team. You know, has
- 25:56Speaker 8: there been flash year that have come and gone. Probably,
- 25:59Speaker 8: but you know, the Ziggi Palfy years were certainly a
- 26:02Speaker 8: lot of fun.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Nice.
- 26:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 8: Well, every time they need to touch the puck man,
- 26:07Speaker 8: the fucking place would just jump out of their seats,
- 26:10Speaker 8: because you always knew something could happen.
- 26:14Speaker 5: You know, going back to your love for hockey, like,
- 26:17Speaker 5: where did that originate?
- 26:19Speaker 4: Where did that start?
- 26:19Speaker 5: You know you mentioned to JD and I before the
- 26:21Speaker 5: show being from Springfield, mass You know where and when
- 26:26Speaker 5: did your love for the Kings start? You know, how
- 26:28Speaker 5: did how did this all culminate for you?
- 26:31Speaker 7: Uh?
- 26:31Speaker 8: Well, yeah, I grew up in Springfield, Mass and we
- 26:34Speaker 8: had an AHL team there that at that time. When
- 26:38Speaker 8: I get into it, they they used to be the
- 26:39Speaker 8: Springfield Indians. Then they became the farm team for the
- 26:44Speaker 8: LA Kings, so they became the Springfield Kings. So I
- 26:48Speaker 8: kind of felt this, you know, a little little you know,
- 26:51Speaker 8: thread connection to this team three thousand miles away because
- 26:55Speaker 8: we would see some of the players coming through and
- 26:57Speaker 8: going up to the big team or or they'd come
- 27:00Speaker 8: down for a while for you know, a conditioning thing
- 27:03Speaker 8: or something. So always felt that connection.
- 27:05Speaker 7: And we'll we.
- 27:08Speaker 8: Like, particularly like the nineteen sixty nine to seventy season,
- 27:12Speaker 8: we had Butch Goring uh there for the second half
- 27:16Speaker 8: of the season. He had had like he had had Buch.
- 27:19Speaker 8: He was up with La but he had mono or something.
- 27:22Speaker 8: He was having health problems and he just didn't have energy.
- 27:25Speaker 8: So they finally sent him down to Springfield for a while,
- 27:27Speaker 8: and he fucking like not only like dominates the league,
- 27:32Speaker 8: but I mean he just takes over the series the
- 27:35Speaker 8: second half of the season, and literally I don't even
- 27:37Speaker 8: know if he knows what he meant to that whole
- 27:41Speaker 8: Springfield area, Like it was kind of a depressed area
- 27:44Speaker 8: in general economically and things like that and incomes. Butch
- 27:48Speaker 8: Goring at like maybe nineteen years old, with the you know,
- 27:53Speaker 8: eight layers of paint on his helmet and just he
- 27:58Speaker 8: and and and Billy Smith and goal was an unbelievable combination.
- 28:05Speaker 8: And so that that's kind of where you know, I
- 28:07Speaker 8: got in that point. And I used to like the
- 28:10Speaker 8: arena was like ten minutes from my house, so I
- 28:12Speaker 8: could walk over there and see games.
- 28:14Speaker 7: I was a rink rat.
- 28:15Speaker 8: I was there every Saturday morning for practices to watch Beau.
- 28:20Speaker 8: And they'd be out there practicing, these highly trained professional athletes,
- 28:25Speaker 8: and they'd be like rows of beer cans lined up
- 28:28Speaker 8: on the box with a lit cigarette on each one
- 28:31Speaker 8: of these.
- 28:35Speaker 2: However, in the starting in Springfield, right to the arena.
- 28:41Speaker 3: Like going back to the Yeah, exactly, back to the Simpsons.
- 28:46Speaker 1: You famously wrote the classic episode Lisa on Ice, in
- 28:50Speaker 1: which Lisa and Bart Simpson go head to head on
- 28:52Speaker 1: the ice. How important was it if you'd write a
- 28:54Speaker 1: hockey episode at least once for the Simpsons?
- 28:57Speaker 8: It was really important because when I got there, it
- 28:59Speaker 8: was like near the end of the fourth season and
- 29:01Speaker 8: they had already done several sports episodes. So you know,
- 29:08Speaker 8: I said, you guys haven't done anything with hockey. So
- 29:10Speaker 8: I sold him on a hockey story kind of partially
- 29:14Speaker 8: based on my experiences like playing, but also at the
- 29:19Speaker 8: Eastern States Coliseum with the you know, watching the Kings
- 29:22Speaker 8: and the scene with Millhouse and goal where he's like
- 29:26Speaker 8: strapped to the posts and yeah, because Eddie Shore used
- 29:30Speaker 8: to own the Springfield Kings and he didn't like his
- 29:34Speaker 8: goalies to flop on the ice, so he would tie.
- 29:37Speaker 7: Their arms to the post.
- 29:39Speaker 2: No, we wouldn't.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Yes, he.
- 29:43Speaker 7: Was nuts.
- 29:45Speaker 8: I'm sure a great player, but he was insane, Like
- 29:47Speaker 8: he would come down. If a puck went out during
- 29:50Speaker 8: practice and it got shot up into the seats, we go,
- 29:53Speaker 8: you know, the kids, We would go running up to
- 29:55Speaker 8: get the puck. He fucking he would take off running
- 29:58Speaker 8: and we were racing this, you know, seventy five eighty
- 30:01Speaker 8: year old man to get to this puck first, because
- 30:04Speaker 8: he didn't want us to get because everything was money,
- 30:07Speaker 8: you know, it was all about those pucks cost money,
- 30:09Speaker 8: those broken sticks cost money. Anything that you know, he
- 30:12Speaker 8: thought he could make. So he was always and he
- 30:15Speaker 8: chased us out of the arena and shit like that.
- 30:17Speaker 7: But it was a lot of fun.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Eddie's shore chasing you out of the rink, that's that's so,
- 30:22Speaker 2: that's amazing. But you know, going back to the Simpsons,
- 30:25Speaker 2: you know I kind of heard when you were a
- 30:27Speaker 2: showrunner for them you adjusted production schedule around the King's
- 30:32Speaker 2: game schedule? Is that true? And how did that work out?
- 30:36Speaker 8: Well? Yeah, that would happen because I had season tickets
- 30:39Speaker 8: to go to the Kings games. So yeah, if there's
- 30:43Speaker 8: ever like if, because sometimes we would have to work
- 30:45Speaker 8: at night and get things done. So I would always
- 30:48Speaker 8: look ahead that week of like which nights I knew
- 30:51Speaker 8: we were going to have up, and I would tell
- 30:53Speaker 8: the staff, We're not going to be working, you know,
- 30:55Speaker 8: Monday night, Thursday night.
- 30:57Speaker 7: Don't worry about. Make plans with your family if you want.
- 31:01Speaker 2: That's what I was going to say. You get the wife.
- 31:03Speaker 2: The wife being like, kay, honey, we have the Kings
- 31:06Speaker 2: are playing on Thursday. We're going to dinner. Because I
- 31:10Speaker 2: know Mike's gonna say, we ain't working right exactly.
- 31:12Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, so we did that, but uh yeah, And
- 31:15Speaker 8: the Lisa on Ice episode, there was also and that
- 31:19Speaker 8: there was a little the way Lisa played Gold was
- 31:22Speaker 8: kind of a direct tribute to Billy Smith.
- 31:25Speaker 7: They hack the bone stuff like that.
- 31:29Speaker 8: Fox had made these promotional pucks at the time for
- 31:32Speaker 8: the episode. I've had matc Ranning drew on it and
- 31:37Speaker 8: signed it. But uh, I've had this now for like
- 31:40Speaker 8: thirty thirty five years something like that.
- 31:43Speaker 4: That's cool, that's amazing, Mike.
- 31:46Speaker 5: I have some buddies from home back to Alaska that
- 31:48Speaker 5: they killed me by the nastas and they're huge Simpsons
- 31:51Speaker 5: fans and speak of a excuse me speaking of Lisa
- 31:54Speaker 5: on Ice. You know, the Simpsons are known for, you know,
- 31:57Speaker 5: their famous predictions, and you know there's different episodes and
- 32:02Speaker 5: and I look some of these up and I saw
- 32:03Speaker 5: some of these up remembered, and it's like Lisa's wedding,
- 32:06Speaker 5: like the video call where now you know they're spacetime right,
- 32:09Speaker 5: their video calling each other and Lisa's on even Lisa
- 32:12Speaker 5: on Ice, you know, they're Newton's typing or I think
- 32:16Speaker 5: he says beat up Martin, but it says eat up
- 32:18Speaker 5: Martha Yestead, right because autocorrect. Yeah, is this was this
- 32:23Speaker 5: a thought product? Like I guess just take me behind
- 32:25Speaker 5: the thought process of how you guys predict the future.
- 32:29Speaker 8: Ah, yeah, it's well, I'd love to say time travel,
- 32:33Speaker 8: time travel. Yeah, we're just we you know, we're dropping
- 32:36Speaker 8: a shitload of acid in that room. So no, I
- 32:44Speaker 8: mean a lot of it is just kind of like
- 32:46Speaker 8: stuff that maybe is just kind of in the ether
- 32:48Speaker 8: at the time. Like probably the biggest prediction we made
- 32:52Speaker 8: was the you know, Trump becoming president, and we did
- 32:56Speaker 8: that around I think around nineteen ninety nine.
- 32:59Speaker 7: We did that. We just needed a joke.
- 33:02Speaker 8: It was a future fantasy episod, so where Lisa's president
- 33:05Speaker 8: in the United States, and we had a joke set
- 33:08Speaker 8: up of okay, we're you know, we're I'm taking over
- 33:11Speaker 8: an economic mess from President Blank, and we just started
- 33:15Speaker 8: pitching names. And for a while it was going to
- 33:19Speaker 8: be President Johnny Depp, so nice, and then somebody mentioned
- 33:24Speaker 8: Trump because he had floated a couple times around that
- 33:28Speaker 8: time that someday he might run for president, actually as
- 33:31Speaker 8: a Democrat, but he mentioned it, and then it kind
- 33:36Speaker 8: of it just kind of became all right, who would
- 33:38Speaker 8: be like the stupidest person America could elect president? And
- 33:42Speaker 8: Trump won. So but yeah, there's a lot of those
- 33:45Speaker 8: kind of like usually if you trace it all the
- 33:48Speaker 8: way back, there was something in the ether, you know,
- 33:51Speaker 8: something in the zeitgeist going on, and then it wind up,
- 33:54Speaker 8: you know, winds up not happening for ten or twenty years,
- 33:58Speaker 8: Like the US winning gold medal and curling, you know
- 34:04Speaker 8: that happened after we did it on the show. You know,
- 34:07Speaker 8: stuff like that Fox buying our Disney buying Fox, because
- 34:12Speaker 8: it was around the time Disney was buying Up they
- 34:16Speaker 8: had bought the California Angels baseball team they bought. They
- 34:20Speaker 8: had the Mighty Ducks or just the Ducks team at
- 34:24Speaker 8: the time, and so they just seemed to be buying
- 34:26Speaker 8: a lot of stuff. So we needed a joke on
- 34:28Speaker 8: a sign for like the entrance to Fox, So we
- 34:32Speaker 8: did twentieth Century Fox. And then somebody pitched a division
- 34:35Speaker 8: of the Walt Disney Corporation, so we stuck that on
- 34:38Speaker 8: as the joke, and then twenty years later we were
- 34:41Speaker 8: all working for Disney.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Go ahead, and then well, it's one of those things.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Mike.
- 34:48Speaker 1: It's interesting when you look at some of your career
- 34:50Speaker 1: and it's like you've worked on so many different things.
- 34:53Speaker 1: You worked on a pair of iconic shows in Raymond
- 34:55Speaker 1: and Parks and rec I mean, obviously The Simpsons is
- 34:58Speaker 1: the headliner in this case, but working on those shows
- 35:00Speaker 1: as well, I mean, what were your memories of those shows.
- 35:03Speaker 8: Yeah, No, got very lucky. I've been lucky working on
- 35:06Speaker 8: some some good shows. And I appreciate you that you're
- 35:08Speaker 8: skipping over the ship once.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Uh come on now shift, Yeah, you know Duncan Pville.
- 35:16Speaker 2: It's amazing.
- 35:17Speaker 8: No, No, actually, Duncan Bill, I loved Actually, we had
- 35:20Speaker 8: a great time on that, But yeah, Raymond, I was
- 35:26Speaker 8: lucky to get over there for a couple of seasons.
- 35:30Speaker 7: Phil Rose, Yeah, created a show.
- 35:33Speaker 8: He had called me up and said that they had
- 35:35Speaker 8: an opening and would I be interested in joining the
- 35:39Speaker 8: staff that he so I was already a big fan
- 35:43Speaker 8: of the show. I think, like ray is super funny.
- 35:45Speaker 8: That whole cast was so good, Peter Boyle and Brad
- 35:48Speaker 8: Garrett and Patty Heaton. So that one was, you know,
- 35:51Speaker 8: kind of a no brainer for me to go over
- 35:54Speaker 8: there for a couple of years. And then Parks and Rec.
- 35:57Speaker 8: There was Greg Daniels who worked on The Simpsons, was
- 36:01Speaker 8: a co creator of Parks and Rec and they were
- 36:03Speaker 8: trying to get the show off the ground the first season,
- 36:06Speaker 8: and he called me up to see, you know, what
- 36:08Speaker 8: I was up to, and I wound up going over
- 36:11Speaker 8: there and instantly kind of clicked with Amy Poehler, who
- 36:15Speaker 8: was a fellow masshole.
- 36:22Speaker 2: My I want to just ask you quickly about you know,
- 36:24Speaker 2: all these shows you've worked on and being in these
- 36:27Speaker 2: writers rooms, and you know, we equated a lot. I
- 36:30Speaker 2: always try to compare things to being in hockey and
- 36:32Speaker 2: being in a locker room, and it's very it's very
- 36:35Speaker 2: family oriented and everybody's kind of got their role, and
- 36:37Speaker 2: there's leaders, and there's there's the guy, you know, the
- 36:41Speaker 2: lead by example, the lead by you know, yelling and
- 36:44Speaker 2: raw raw like for you what what what are some
- 36:47Speaker 2: of your fondest memories of being in the writer's room
- 36:49Speaker 2: and what does it mean to kind of for you
- 36:51Speaker 2: to be in there.
- 36:53Speaker 8: Yeah, it's well, when I first got there, I'll be
- 36:56Speaker 8: very honest, I was fucking terrified. There's like there was like,
- 37:01Speaker 8: you know, nineteen writers in there, all Harvard graduates, and
- 37:05Speaker 8: I went to community college for one day. Technically it
- 37:13Speaker 8: was a half day. You had to quit in the
- 37:14Speaker 8: first twenty four hours to get your money back, So
- 37:19Speaker 8: that was very intimidating. And so when I got there,
- 37:23Speaker 8: actually my first day there was the day that Conan
- 37:27Speaker 8: O'Brien was still on staff at The Simpsons, but it
- 37:31Speaker 8: was the day he got the phone call that NBC
- 37:34Speaker 8: was hiring him as their new late night host. So
- 37:37Speaker 8: we never actually got to work together. We shook hands,
- 37:39Speaker 8: said hello, and then he got a phone call and
- 37:42Speaker 8: he was gone, Wow, But you're right, I mean, there
- 37:45Speaker 8: is kind of a locker room vibe in that there's
- 37:48Speaker 8: a lot of different personalities kind of all there to
- 37:51Speaker 8: try to accomplish the same thing, you know, and it's
- 37:54Speaker 8: blending those personalities is the tricky part. And you want
- 37:59Speaker 8: to take advantage of pull from everybody's everybody's background and
- 38:03Speaker 8: like what they're childhoods were like, and you know what
- 38:06Speaker 8: their interests are and stories.
- 38:08Speaker 7: From their life.
- 38:09Speaker 8: So it's it's a lot of like a lot of
- 38:12Speaker 8: mutual respect in there, and some people shine at something,
- 38:16Speaker 8: you know, once in a while. You know, it gets
- 38:17Speaker 8: a little heated every once in a while, but very rarely.
- 38:21Speaker 8: And but that's part of the fun is you know,
- 38:24Speaker 8: you just is that mix of personalities and when you
- 38:27Speaker 8: hear about somebody else's life, you think your life is unique.
- 38:31Speaker 8: And then you hear somebody else's crazy stories about their
- 38:34Speaker 8: dad and then next thing you know, they start finding
- 38:37Speaker 8: their way into the show. I mean, I got hockey
- 38:40Speaker 8: in and I got you know shit, I got you know,
- 38:45Speaker 8: arrested for shoplisting when I was thirteen. That's that's a
- 38:48Speaker 8: Simpsons episode. Yeah, So like all those things that traumatized
- 38:53Speaker 8: you as a kid, you can get paid for as
- 38:55Speaker 8: an adult if you can turn it into a TV show.
- 38:58Speaker 5: Well, you've you know, you've written I'm sure with so
- 39:01Speaker 5: many different you know, amazing writers of of course your
- 39:04Speaker 5: career and got to learn from so many. You know,
- 39:07Speaker 5: you've written for favorite award shows, including the Golden Globes.
- 39:14Speaker 5: You know, or is there a unique story or experience
- 39:18Speaker 5: or you know, and that's such a unique such a
- 39:22Speaker 5: unique job. Is there a certain story experience that you
- 39:24Speaker 5: can take away from that?
- 39:25Speaker 4: Oh?
- 39:26Speaker 8: Man, uh ship, I know, right after I stopped talking you,
- 39:32Speaker 8: I'll think of a million of them.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Take your time, just the you match?
- 39:40Speaker 4: Yeah, that that too.
- 39:41Speaker 2: It could be a you mentioned that up gets heated,
- 39:44Speaker 2: just a just a nice fuck you match in there.
- 39:48Speaker 7: Oh well, there was one, I mean there was one.
- 39:51Speaker 8: I won't name the writer, but it was one day
- 39:54Speaker 8: the sentence where this writer, you know something you got
- 39:56Speaker 8: to kind of like learn how to conduct yourself in
- 39:59Speaker 8: the room after a while, and you know, you pitched
- 40:02Speaker 8: jokes and sometimes you in your head it's super funny
- 40:05Speaker 8: and you can't wait to blurt it out, and you
- 40:08Speaker 8: you get it out and it's just dead silence, man,
- 40:11Speaker 8: just fucking crickets. And you even wonder for a second,
- 40:15Speaker 8: did they all not hear me? Should I say it again,
- 40:19Speaker 8: but there was a guy who he pitched his joke
- 40:22Speaker 8: and it just got nothing. And then we're all still thinking,
- 40:26Speaker 8: and there's a lot of quiet periods in the room too,
- 40:28Speaker 8: where everyone's thinking.
- 40:29Speaker 7: And then he pitches it again.
- 40:32Speaker 8: It's still like nothing, and we're still thinking, and he
- 40:36Speaker 8: pitches the same joke a third time, and the showrunner
- 40:40Speaker 8: at the time blows up. He goes, well, you shut
- 40:43Speaker 8: up with that fucking joke. It's not going in the show.
- 40:47Speaker 8: So the writer gets up and starts to storm out
- 40:51Speaker 8: of the room and he's kind of a big guy.
- 40:53Speaker 7: He's like walking, but he have to you.
- 40:55Speaker 8: Have to walk past twenty people to get out the room.
- 40:58Speaker 8: So he's on the way.
- 40:59Speaker 7: He goes, all right, already, but you know, you don't
- 41:02Speaker 7: have to be a jerk about it.
- 41:03Speaker 8: And when he's said jerk, his voice cracked, like you
- 41:07Speaker 8: don't have to be a jerk about it. And he
- 41:10Speaker 8: gets and he gets outside the door, and we didn't
- 41:13Speaker 8: even have the decency to let him get away from
- 41:16Speaker 8: the door a week where he couldn't hear us laughing
- 41:19Speaker 8: hysterically after he got It's it's that second you're outside
- 41:22Speaker 8: of a room and everyone in the room is laughing,
- 41:25Speaker 8: and you're.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Always awkward to be in that person and you don't
- 41:31Speaker 1: want to be that guy. Yeah, the white character I
- 41:33Speaker 1: love one of than Mike was crushing the clown famously
- 41:36Speaker 1: or perhaps infamously based on David Letterman. You know, so
- 41:40Speaker 1: hysterical and manic, honor that offer, he's spoken, drigg, so depressed,
- 41:44Speaker 1: et cetera. Was it true that you guys gonna cease
- 41:47Speaker 1: and desist letter after a crush of the clown puped
- 41:49Speaker 1: in the cup?
- 41:50Speaker 5: Uh?
- 41:51Speaker 8: Yes, Actually I personally got that because because I was
- 41:54Speaker 8: the writer of the episode.
- 41:55Speaker 7: It came to me.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Uh and.
- 42:00Speaker 8: Or was I running the show? I can't even remember,
- 42:02Speaker 8: but yeah, it was a seasoned desist. I was running
- 42:04Speaker 8: the show at the time. It's in a different episode,
- 42:06Speaker 8: and it was basically, you can't do this.
- 42:10Speaker 7: It's the Stanley Cup.
- 42:11Speaker 8: It's a trademark of the NHL, and you know, and
- 42:15Speaker 8: so I called the Fox lawyers, and the Fox lawyers
- 42:18Speaker 8: who normally are like, you know, they are like cautious
- 42:20Speaker 8: about this stuff, and they explained to me, like, ah,
- 42:23Speaker 8: you know, like don't worry about that. A seasoned desist
- 42:25Speaker 8: letter doesn't mean anything, just go ahead and do it.
- 42:29Speaker 8: So Fox actually backed us on it and then we
- 42:32Speaker 8: never heard any more about it. But I mean the
- 42:34Speaker 8: show has always been hockey friendly, you know, so we
- 42:38Speaker 8: felt like we were on pretty solid ground.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 42:41Speaker 7: I had forgotten about that letter to bring about members.
- 42:46Speaker 2: I wish Fox Fox backing you though. I like that.
- 42:49Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike, Uh.
- 42:51Speaker 2: You know, in all your years of being a you know,
- 42:53Speaker 2: an NHL fan and going to a lot of the games,
- 42:56Speaker 2: do you have a favorite interaction with an NHL player
- 42:59Speaker 2: throughout these years?
- 43:01Speaker 7: Oh?
- 43:01Speaker 8: Man, Uh, yeah, Well, actually one is like back when
- 43:04Speaker 8: I was fifteen years old, I went to Willie Marshall
- 43:10Speaker 8: Hockey School, which was like kids could go and you
- 43:14Speaker 8: train with you're taught by NHL players. And at the
- 43:19Speaker 8: year I went, it was Doug Harvey and Dennis Potvin
- 43:26Speaker 8: was I think eighteen he had just been drafted, and
- 43:31Speaker 8: Don Leaver from the Vancouver Canucks.
- 43:34Speaker 7: So they were like our staff. So we got for
- 43:36Speaker 7: two weeks.
- 43:37Speaker 8: You get a chance to really talk to these guys
- 43:40Speaker 8: and they were so nice and it was just fun
- 43:43Speaker 8: to see them in a different environment. If at one
- 43:46Speaker 8: day Doug Harvey did like we sat down at lunch
- 43:50Speaker 8: and they would do like Q and A with the
- 43:51Speaker 8: kids during lunchtimes, and Doug Harvey did it one day
- 43:56Speaker 8: and the kids said, you know, mister Harvey, my dad
- 43:59Speaker 8: said you're the greatest defenseman who ever played the game.
- 44:03Speaker 8: And Doug was like, oh, that's very nice of him
- 44:06Speaker 8: to say that. And he goes, but he said, you
- 44:08Speaker 8: played two years too long, and Harvey said, well, yeah,
- 44:18Speaker 8: there's he might have a point there, but you know,
- 44:20Speaker 8: sometimes you got to play a little too long to
- 44:23Speaker 8: know you're.
- 44:23Speaker 3: Past that time.
- 44:26Speaker 4: Yeah. I may have done that too. That's that's okay,
- 44:28Speaker 4: that happens.
- 44:30Speaker 3: I've been awesome.
- 44:30Speaker 2: If Doug Harvey's like, tell your dad to go fuck himself.
- 44:33Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm at the point now where I've got I've
- 44:37Speaker 8: got writers telling me it's time to get out, you know.
- 44:40Speaker 5: Yeah, you know where the NHL is at now, Mike
- 44:44Speaker 5: is there? You know you talk about other players, past players.
- 44:47Speaker 5: Are there certain players that you watch or a certain
- 44:49Speaker 5: team besides the Kings that you you enjoy watching?
- 44:53Speaker 8: Uh?
- 44:54Speaker 7: Yeah, I still.
- 44:54Speaker 8: I mean I'm a sucker for the original six and
- 44:58Speaker 8: also so you know, I will watch Bruins and stuff,
- 45:02Speaker 8: but I do you know when there's somebody I knew.
- 45:04Speaker 8: Like this year, I've been trying to see more Sharks games.
- 45:08Speaker 8: I think, like Celebrini.
- 45:10Speaker 4: There you go.
- 45:11Speaker 8: It's so exciting to watch man. Uh, it's you can
- 45:15Speaker 8: just kind of see you know that it's you know,
- 45:18Speaker 8: he's a you know, generational talent and he's, you know,
- 45:21Speaker 8: barring injuries, he's going to be dominating the next twenty years.
- 45:25Speaker 2: Do you uh were you watching Kings games when they
- 45:29Speaker 2: won the Cups? Those two Cups in twenty twelve and fourteen.
- 45:33Speaker 7: Oh yeah, I was at both of them.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so that you were there when I got reverse
- 45:36Speaker 2: swept by the Kings.
- 45:39Speaker 8: Oh, I was secretly rooting for you guys. You know, Okay,
- 45:51Speaker 8: we're probably gonna meet someday.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Did you go to any of the Cup
- 45:57Speaker 2: parties or got to be close to the cup or
- 45:58Speaker 2: anything like that.
- 45:59Speaker 7: Yeah, we did one of them.
- 46:02Speaker 8: I took a couple of my daughters went, we got
- 46:05Speaker 8: our pictures with the Cup. I've turned I have five daughters,
- 46:08Speaker 8: but I've managed to turn them all into hockey fans.
- 46:13Speaker 8: So we've had a lot of great nights at the games,
- 46:15Speaker 8: and and they've actually, uh, they actually complained about the
- 46:20Speaker 8: decrease in fighting over the years.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Good daughters.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, five daughters, so Mike, Oh my god.
- 46:29Speaker 8: Yeah, Like Kyle Clifford was a favorite of theirs for
- 46:31Speaker 8: a long time, and I'm actually I'm sorry. I've also
- 46:40Speaker 8: showed them videos of remember the Bruins Rangers game where
- 46:43Speaker 8: the Bruins This is like way back when the Bruins
- 46:46Speaker 8: went up into the stands. Yeah, Mike, he's beating a
- 46:52Speaker 8: fan with his shoe. My daughters were probably like around
- 46:55Speaker 8: ten years old, and I'm showing.
- 47:00Speaker 2: That's pretty good.
- 47:02Speaker 1: NHL is a special animate of broadcas cast a live
- 47:05Speaker 1: NHL game coming up, featuring the characters from Inside Out,
- 47:07Speaker 1: the Great Animated Movie. Obviously, everyone's appreciating what those different
- 47:11Speaker 1: characters who represent sadness on we anxiety, et cetera. How
- 47:14Speaker 1: much you'd like to see a similar broadcast featuring Simpson's characters.
- 47:18Speaker 7: Oh, man, that that would actually be a lot of fun.
- 47:22Speaker 7: I would love that.
- 47:23Speaker 8: There's there are several hockey fans on staff. There's a
- 47:26Speaker 8: guy named Joel Cohen who's from Calgary originally, and he
- 47:31Speaker 8: wrote an episode called Top Goon uh and it had
- 47:35Speaker 8: we had Dave Schultz and Tiger Williams. Uh, we're guest
- 47:40Speaker 8: starers on the show, so there's several Canadian writers on
- 47:43Speaker 8: the show, but there's a lot of hockey fans.
- 47:45Speaker 7: Al Jean is a big one. So yeah, we'd love it.
- 47:50Speaker 5: Mike, since we're still well, I actually tell I think
- 47:53Speaker 5: I feel like you just had a question you wanted
- 47:54Speaker 5: to ask.
- 47:54Speaker 6: I had a quick one, like to He likes to
- 47:58Speaker 6: just one, just one for this week, to just one.
- 48:02Speaker 6: We all have a million questions from so I want
- 48:05Speaker 6: to keep it short. He loved getting into film and
- 48:08Speaker 6: television and all the little urban myths and things like
- 48:11Speaker 6: that in the industry. And I noticed I was going
- 48:14Speaker 6: through your IMDb and I noticed that you were a
- 48:17Speaker 6: writer on The Royal Family, which was supposed to be
- 48:20Speaker 6: this huge comeback for the legendary Red Fox. And of
- 48:25Speaker 6: course he ended up dying during the first season of
- 48:28Speaker 6: the making of that show. I was just wondering if
- 48:30Speaker 6: there was any story you could share about how chaotic
- 48:33Speaker 6: that whole experience must have been.
- 48:36Speaker 8: Yeah, it was first, I shouldn't laugh at the way
- 48:39Speaker 8: he died, in a very funny way.
- 48:44Speaker 7: When he died.
- 48:44Speaker 8: He you've seen Sandford and Son, Remember, he was always
- 48:51Speaker 8: like pretending to have a heart attack and like I'm
- 48:53Speaker 8: coming to join you, Elizabeth, you know, like be kind
- 48:56Speaker 8: of staggering around the room pretending he was having a
- 48:59Speaker 8: heart attack. Well, on Royal Family, he was on stage
- 49:03Speaker 8: working and he clutched his chest and started staggering around,
- 49:08Speaker 8: and we weren't down there, but the crew was on
- 49:10Speaker 8: set and they're all cracking up, thinking he's doing Fred
- 49:14Speaker 8: Sandford for them, and then then he finally falls to
- 49:18Speaker 8: the floor and theyreize, oh shit. So he was interesting,
- 49:23Speaker 8: you know, he was a fascinating guy. The you know,
- 49:28Speaker 8: there's there's a lot of great Red Fox stories around.
- 49:31Speaker 8: Probably the most famous one was him playing Vegas like
- 49:35Speaker 8: like a midnight show at some casino and he comes
- 49:38Speaker 8: out and the band had the orders to, like when
- 49:42Speaker 8: he walks out, you play the Sandford in something, the
- 49:45Speaker 8: theme song, you know that, and when he's done with
- 49:49Speaker 8: the show and he walks off. So Red Fox walks
- 49:54Speaker 8: out one night to do a show and there's like
- 49:56Speaker 8: hardly anybody there, and he gets the he walks it
- 50:00Speaker 8: ladies and gentlemen, you know, Red Fox Dana, and he
- 50:04Speaker 8: walks out, gets to the microphone, looks out at the audience, goes,
- 50:07Speaker 8: I ain't doing a show for nine fucking people, drops
- 50:10Speaker 8: the mic and walks off stairs, and then that's great.
- 50:19Speaker 8: There's actually a tribute to that joke in some Simpsons
- 50:22Speaker 8: episode that I'm forgetting right now.
- 50:25Speaker 3: Stories for Days of Mike Skelly.
- 50:26Speaker 1: Mike have been an incredible career, obviously with the Simpsons,
- 50:28Speaker 1: parks and rec Everyone loves Raymond and so many others.
- 50:31Speaker 1: Really appreciate the stories, and good luck to the Kings
- 50:33Speaker 1: the rest of the way.
- 50:34Speaker 8: Oh thanks, Lat's an honored beyond here. Guys love the podcast,
- 50:45Speaker 8: thanks to Mike Skelly.
- 50:46Speaker 3: Once again.
- 50:47Speaker 1: I normally like to stick to movies when it comes
- 50:49Speaker 1: us in a file, but it'll little squeeze a little
- 50:51Speaker 1: TV here for a dt F. Saint Louis Is on HBO.
- 50:53Speaker 1: A friend of mine, my dear friend alphahel Onan says,
- 50:55Speaker 1: you gotta watch the show. I said, not only watch
- 50:57Speaker 1: my TV shows, you know, I said, I see eight episodes.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Three minutes, I go, you know, I could just watch
- 51:01Speaker 1: a couple of movies.
- 51:02Speaker 3: He's like, no, but you gotta watch this. Why sell
- 51:03Speaker 3: me on it?
- 51:04Speaker 1: Jason Bateman, I go, I love Arrest of Development, but
- 51:06Speaker 1: I have to watch every Jason Bateman show.
- 51:07Speaker 3: I'm tired of SmartLess David Harbor. I'm like, well, I
- 51:09Speaker 3: never watch Stranger Things.
- 51:10Speaker 4: I know.
- 51:10Speaker 1: He is, okay, fine, Linda Carlini. I go, now you
- 51:13Speaker 1: have my attention, because Linda's Linda Carlini. I'm gonna scait
- 51:16Speaker 1: right now. He goes, Laingerie episode two. I go, okay, well,
- 51:19Speaker 1: I could clearly give this a chance. You're gonna get
- 51:21Speaker 1: three episode one.
- 51:22Speaker 3: Clearly He's like, yeah, he goes, just give it a shock.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Very fine.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Now I go, wait, this isn't like a thirty minute show.
- 51:26Speaker 1: This is like a fifty five minutes This is like
- 51:28Speaker 1: a why are comedies an hour?
- 51:30Speaker 4: Now?
- 51:30Speaker 3: I like a thirty minute situation comedy as well.
- 51:32Speaker 2: It's it's HBO.
- 51:33Speaker 1: It's fifty minutes, it's an hour. Just get a shot,
- 51:35Speaker 1: fair enough. I watched the first episode Tallision as well.
- 51:38Speaker 3: It's dark, it's creepy, a little cringey, but.
- 51:40Speaker 1: I'm amused by this. It's definitely beautifully shot. As much
- 51:43Speaker 1: HBO shows has a certain style to it. The castume's intriguing.
- 51:46Speaker 1: And then we get this episode two.
- 51:47Speaker 3: I'm like, oh my god, whoa daddy?
- 51:48Speaker 1: As JD would say, a lot of salacious content, but
- 51:51Speaker 1: I gotta tell you highly entertaining, terrific CASTI the actors
- 51:55Speaker 1: I mentioned would also tell the great Richard Jenkins, who
- 51:57Speaker 1: I loved in The Visitor, very good actor over the years,
- 51:59Speaker 1: playing one of the detectives. And it's a dark, dark
- 52:02Speaker 1: comedy emphasis on dark. It's not show, but it's a
- 52:04Speaker 1: pretty funny show. I don't want to give way too
- 52:06Speaker 1: much to the Fellas. I want Nate and GD to
- 52:07Speaker 1: give a chance at some point. It's got a bit
- 52:09Speaker 1: of a murder mystery to it. Unexpected to light right
- 52:11Speaker 1: now on HBO.
- 52:12Speaker 4: D right now.
- 52:14Speaker 3: I really okay, you're gonna watch it.
- 52:15Speaker 2: What is as long as you say what DTF means.
- 52:17Speaker 2: I don't know what that is. It means down to
- 52:19Speaker 2: say it.
- 52:20Speaker 3: You say that's okay.
- 52:22Speaker 1: One of my voys is giving the the Fellas in
- 52:26Speaker 1: go ahead your thoughts on dt F, Saint Louis.
- 52:29Speaker 6: I just want to I enjoy the last episode I
- 52:32Speaker 6: wasn't huge on, but the first is very strong.
- 52:36Speaker 2: I just want to.
- 52:37Speaker 6: I just want to acknowledge that we're now on three
- 52:40Speaker 6: decades of Linda Cardlini and we've never and we've never
- 52:43Speaker 6: seen her like this, not that I've seen.
- 52:45Speaker 3: That's a great tea.
- 52:46Speaker 1: Yeah, my pretty ouphasite because never sex here Linda Carle
- 52:50Speaker 1: I loved her and freaks and geeks of course the
- 52:51Speaker 1: Great Judd Apatow Show, James Franco. She was in mad Men,
- 52:54Speaker 1: She's in Broke Back Mountain. But this is a career
- 52:57Speaker 1: turns for at fifty years old. Linda Curling is like,
- 52:59Speaker 1: you know what, She's gonna go for it here. She's
- 53:01Speaker 1: a good looking lady. So I can't wait to watch it.
- 53:04Speaker 4: I definitely in.
- 53:07Speaker 1: I can't wait for the reviews from both Layton, JD
- 53:09Speaker 1: DTF St louis currently on HBO in terms of actual
- 53:13Speaker 1: other stories than the ice just to get to Blue
- 53:14Speaker 1: Jackets and Petters.
- 53:15Speaker 3: Two teams that look cooked earlier this season are suddenly
- 53:17Speaker 3: in a playoff spot. Columbus we mentioned earlier.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Nineteen nineteen and seven when they fired Dan Nevson under bonus,
- 53:23Speaker 1: they've gone nineteen three and four and Nashville had the
- 53:27Speaker 1: worst record in the late December nineteenth, they screaked into
- 53:29Speaker 1: a wildcard spot riding their current five game win streak,
- 53:31Speaker 1: and Stamcos has been an absolute terror. Two points in
- 53:34Speaker 1: his first fourteen games, thirty four goals, fifty six points
- 53:38Speaker 1: in fifty six games.
- 53:39Speaker 3: Since then, he leads the NHL with ten game winning goals.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Again, we talked aout Columbus earlier in ate the fact
- 53:44Speaker 1: that could be exciting your thoughts on this Nashville team,
- 53:46Speaker 1: the run they butt on and stam Cooast re energized.
- 53:50Speaker 4: Yeah, another dangerous team.
- 53:51Speaker 5: I think that if they they get in, it's gonna
- 53:54Speaker 5: be a tough out too, because of some of the
- 53:56Speaker 5: veteran guys and game breakers they have. And you know,
- 53:59Speaker 5: Boiler and Rupper did a great job on Tape Room
- 54:02Speaker 5: about Steven sam Coast yesterday, and you know, I play
- 54:06Speaker 5: with stanmord. It's just impressive just because he's able to
- 54:09Speaker 5: reinvent himself and you know, when he's struggling or whatever happens,
- 54:13Speaker 5: he he goes out there and he does little things
- 54:16Speaker 5: and he scores goals in different ways. He's kind of
- 54:18Speaker 5: reinvented himself on the power play this year too, Like
- 54:21Speaker 5: he's you we're so used to seeing him in that
- 54:23Speaker 5: one timer spot, but you've seen him different replays where
- 54:25Speaker 5: he's ended up in front of the net and you know,
- 54:27Speaker 5: just different different places where he's just making himself, you know,
- 54:32Speaker 5: more of an all round player. So this this Nashville
- 54:34Speaker 5: team with you know, with other guys like Roan o'reiley,
- 54:37Speaker 5: how good he's been playing march as sool. I mean,
- 54:40Speaker 5: their their team is finally starting to kind of come
- 54:42Speaker 5: together at the right time, and it is good timing
- 54:45Speaker 5: for Nashville.
- 54:46Speaker 3: You've been known as no marriage JD.
- 54:48Speaker 1: Did you see the resurgence of Steven Stamco's coming after
- 54:50Speaker 1: last season?
- 54:52Speaker 2: Uh? Probably not. I didn't. I did say though last week.
- 54:58Speaker 2: This is probably twelve days ago, I said Nashville is
- 55:01Speaker 2: going to make the playoffs. Wow to people going no way,
- 55:06Speaker 2: and I said, we did a bracket and I said
- 55:07Speaker 2: Nashville's gonna make the playoffs. And everybody, now be careful
- 55:12Speaker 2: if you're a Utah Mammoth fan, because they were all
- 55:15Speaker 2: comfortable in that second wild that first wildcard spot, gonna
- 55:20Speaker 2: play the pillow Fight Division. I heard rumors that they
- 55:23Speaker 2: were like making jokes at the GM meetings. Bill Armstrong
- 55:26Speaker 2: was kind of I heard kind of something under the radar.
- 55:30Speaker 2: We'll keep this for the audio version that he was like, yeah,
- 55:33Speaker 2: we're in the you know, we're kind of locked in
- 55:34Speaker 2: the Pacific. Now all of a sudden, they might be
- 55:37Speaker 2: getting Colorado round one because Nashville is absolutely on fire
- 55:41Speaker 2: right now. They're they were in such a good spot
- 55:44Speaker 2: they play what's crazy to note before I get to
- 55:48Speaker 2: Stamcoast because there's not much money to add on that.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Also of note, Philip Forsberg has been a monster for
- 55:56Speaker 2: this team, and he's carrying them into the playoffs. But
- 55:58Speaker 2: they were our fourteen and zero against the Sharks in
- 56:01Speaker 2: the last fourteen games, and they play them two more times,
- 56:05Speaker 2: that's two, not three, two more times before the end
- 56:07Speaker 2: of the season. They have a pretty good schedule they're in.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Now do they pass Utah And he becomes a little
- 56:13Speaker 2: bit of a battle for that wild card spot to
- 56:17Speaker 2: miss Colorado Avalanche because he ever gets Colorado is getting
- 56:20Speaker 2: their walking papers after nine days. But that's what I
- 56:22Speaker 2: got for your bitch asses.
- 56:25Speaker 3: Well said with the course to the Nashville Predators and
- 56:27Speaker 3: Stevens Tama coach and.
- 56:28Speaker 1: One last thought flowers to Paul Maurice, legendary Panthers coach
- 56:32Speaker 1: made a history Tuesday Night coaching in his two thousandth
- 56:35Speaker 1: NHL game. The only other head coach reached that Mileson
- 56:37Speaker 1: is the great Scottie Bowman.
- 56:39Speaker 3: I assuming he comes back, and why wouldn't he.
- 56:41Speaker 1: Buffalo coach Lindy Roff should reach the mark next season,
- 56:44Speaker 1: Lindy at home, rough on the road.
- 56:46Speaker 2: I thought he's done that. I thought Lindy's done after
- 56:48Speaker 2: this year, after.
- 56:49Speaker 3: The season, he's gonna come back.
- 56:50Speaker 1: No, he's done, you think, so he's retiring. Joel Quentville exactly.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Joel Quinville should do the same the season after next.
- 56:58Speaker 1: But it's pretty impressive. Paul Maurice has done. And I
- 57:01Speaker 1: remember him as at twenty eight years of age coaching
- 57:03Speaker 1: the Hartford Whaler John Forzel on the call back.
- 57:05Speaker 3: There in Connecticut.
- 57:06Speaker 1: Now, all these years later when he won the Cup,
- 57:08Speaker 1: I was so happy for him. Obviously, had successful tenures
- 57:11Speaker 1: in Winnipeg in Toronto, wasn't able to win the big one. Nate,
- 57:13Speaker 1: your thoughts on Moe. He seems like a universally well
- 57:15Speaker 1: liked coach.
- 57:17Speaker 4: He's great. I know I played for him in Winnipeg
- 57:19Speaker 4: and I'm just an ultimate motivator. Just this guy can talk.
- 57:22Speaker 5: I mean you see it in his interview, his postgame
- 57:24Speaker 5: and this guys must watch when he can speak.
- 57:27Speaker 4: You listen and just he's just a good He always
- 57:31Speaker 4: has a good beat on the team.
- 57:32Speaker 5: He knows, you know, he knows how to motivate guys
- 57:36Speaker 5: and when to back off, and you know, he's he's
- 57:38Speaker 5: had a Hall of Fame career.
- 57:39Speaker 4: I think kudos to Paul. He's a great guy and
- 57:41Speaker 4: he's a great coach.
- 57:43Speaker 3: JD. Do you prefer an old man coach or a
- 57:45Speaker 3: younger one.
- 57:47Speaker 2: Well, all these recycled coaches are showing and proven to
- 57:50Speaker 2: us that recycling is good for you and good for
- 57:51Speaker 2: the planet, because they're all winning right now, Lindy Rouff winning.
- 57:56Speaker 2: You know, Paul Maurice is obviously not a recycled coach.
- 57:58Speaker 2: Rick bonus. But listen, if somebody very wise said, you know,
- 58:04Speaker 2: it's how you you know, everybody gives the same message,
- 58:07Speaker 2: but it's how you deliver the message and how it's
- 58:09Speaker 2: received by the players. And I think it's very wise.
- 58:12Speaker 2: I think as Barry Melroe said that, But it's Paul
- 58:15Speaker 2: Maurice just delivers the message to the guys in such
- 58:18Speaker 2: a great way and guys just are so receptive to it.
- 58:21Speaker 2: So to Nate's point, like, I just think he's one
- 58:23Speaker 2: of the great hockey minds and deserves respect and for
- 58:26Speaker 2: him to kind of have that mental breakdown so to
- 58:29Speaker 2: speak when he was in Winnipeg and pull himself out
- 58:31Speaker 2: and then come back in and be even better and
- 58:34Speaker 2: has improved on himself as just a testament to who
- 58:36Speaker 2: he is as a person. And when you interview him
- 58:39Speaker 2: and he's like he's so, he's just so engaged with
- 58:42Speaker 2: you and gives you insightful answers and cares so much. So, yeah,
- 58:47Speaker 2: kudos to him. Amazing. And then Bob that same night
- 58:50Speaker 2: climbs the all time wins list with that win. So
- 58:55Speaker 2: Bobrovski gives him a little a little ode to Paul.
- 58:58Speaker 1: Yeah, he's trying to catch Ed Belfo on that list.
- 59:00Speaker 1: Now see the all time wins among goalies. Pebrovsky's certainly
- 59:03Speaker 1: got some of those guys within strike distance. And uh, yeah,
- 59:06Speaker 1: as you said, Paul Maurice, people thought he was done.
- 59:08Speaker 1: He thought he was done, and all of a sudden,
- 59:09Speaker 1: all right, Belzino drags him out there to Florida and
- 59:11Speaker 1: he changes his mind all of sudden. He's had a
- 59:12Speaker 1: great success there with the Panthers. Certainly been an awesome
- 59:15Speaker 1: run for Paul Mareice except for this season. Who knows
- 59:17Speaker 1: how they'll bounce back, but it also seems inevitable. Towel
- 59:20Speaker 1: last thought, he's gonna pas Scotty Bow when all the
- 59:22Speaker 1: time he wins, he's still a rout to the young man.
- 59:24Speaker 1: I don't be Palmres is even sixty years old, yet
- 59:25Speaker 1: he's gonna break the all time wins mark.
- 59:27Speaker 6: I was gonna ask, does anyone here know how old
- 59:30Speaker 6: Paul Maurice is, because I was seeing a shock when
- 59:32Speaker 6: I found out fifty six.
- 59:33Speaker 2: I'm gonna guess I think he's fifty four.
- 59:36Speaker 4: fIF wow, seven, he's fifty nine.
- 59:39Speaker 6: I assumed he was at least in his sixties.
- 59:41Speaker 4: He's that's how long he's been around. By the way,
- 59:44Speaker 4: jiu jitsu guy he is, Yeah.
- 59:46Speaker 2: Does he do jiu jitsu?
- 59:47Speaker 3: Jiu jitsu is gay?
- 59:49Speaker 4: Gee?
- 59:53Speaker 1: Well, once again props to uh listen. I know Nate
- 59:56Speaker 1: loves his martial arts. I appreciate the fact that Paul
- 59:58Speaker 1: Maurice gets down the jiu jitsu as well.
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: Thanks once again to j D.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: Nate and tow for an extll episode, Mike Scully as well,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: and we closed again. We're trying to get new nicknames
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: out there so JD just love cocky. We'll see if
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: you can get that rolling.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: In my love cocky.
