- 0:00Welcome to the Curve Weekly, where we read the finance news so that you don't have to.
- 0:05I'm so people right, I did not start in the finance space, I was just really sick and tired
- 0:10of not knowing what's going on.
- 0:11And I'm Vic Harris, I'm a finance professional and I've had a career out of making money
- 0:15for other people.
- 0:16So we made this podcast so that everyone can have access to what's happening in the finance
- 0:20news.
- 0:21In today's episode, we have, I hope it's going to be a new and besting trend.
- 0:25Well is it investing or is it gambling?
- 0:26I don't know.
- 0:27It's cool production markets and we'd love to know what you think about them.
- 0:31It got very right up there, that's what let's just say.
- 0:34Also, there's skyrocketing oil prices right now.
- 0:38You may have noticed that petrol's more expensive.
- 0:40This is obviously a flow on from what's happening in the war and we're going to talk about
- 0:44exactly what's going on.
- 0:46And there is another investing trend, I reckon, and it's called loneliness.
- 0:51Do you think it's a trend?
- 0:53I think it's a demographic change.
- 0:54Yeah, we're going to dig into the idea of if it's a trend, what is happening?
- 0:59And essentially, why do we think there is so many more people that are lonely?
- 1:03But before we dive in, we're on the search for a new podcast host.
- 1:06It could be you.
- 1:12Guess what, Vic.
- 1:13What?
- 1:14We're getting a new me.
- 1:16A new you.
- 1:17Yeah.
- 1:18No, you're a place.
- 1:19I'm being replaced.
- 1:20I'm being replaced for next week's episode.
- 1:23We generally record when we're on holiday or in different parts of the world.
- 1:27It's quite easy to take podcasts, you know, it's easy to take the gear, but there's always
- 1:32something that goes wrong, like the Wi-Fi, forgets to record, or not a hundred percent.
- 1:38But yes, I'm going on annual leave.
- 1:39Yeah.
- 1:40This is huge.
- 1:41For anyone that runs our own business, they will know, and you'll leave as not really
- 1:44a thing that you take.
- 1:45No.
- 1:46Actually, there has been one time where I was like pretty switched off, but I am so switched
- 1:50off because I'm going to be on the back of a motorbike, or I'm a boat.
- 1:54I'm not going to have access, so we are looking for a Sophie Hall, right?
- 2:02To be honest, you don't need to be a Sophie Hall, right?
- 2:04You just need to be trusted.
- 2:05Just a one-off.
- 2:06Not a permanent replacement.
- 2:07You're true.
- 2:08You're not.
- 2:09Oh, there could be really good.
- 2:10True.
- 2:11Well, see, someone do me out of a job.
- 2:12It's a nice supposed to be some kind of saying, you know, if you can make yourself redundant
- 2:16in your business, that's like the best achievement or something like that.
- 2:19It's the, especially if you want to sell the business, you don't want to be so integral
- 2:23that you can never sell it because you are the business.
- 2:25You were looking at it.
- 2:26It's not about you.
- 2:27No, no, no.
- 2:28But my point here is, if anyone is listening to this, probably for this one, based in New
- 2:33Zealand, would be easier.
- 2:34Yes.
- 2:35However, apply for it anywhere in the world because we can make it work.
- 2:39We're going to put the details in the podcast show notes.
- 2:41Oh, my God, should we hold auditions or something?
- 2:43Sure.
- 2:44Like, quite fun.
- 2:45Like, make people seem like a mixtape.
- 2:46No, no, mixtape.
- 2:47What's a called a selfie video?
- 2:49Yeah.
- 2:50Of why they think they could be.
- 2:51To be fair, a selfie video is quite a lot harder than podcasting I was saying.
- 2:55I was sharing the community and getting the community vote.
- 2:57Ruthless.
- 2:58Actually, nah.
- 2:59Sorry, you got no votes.
- 3:01Sorry, you got no votes.
- 3:03Because it's public.
- 3:04That's a popularity contest.
- 3:05I don't like it.
- 3:06No, no, no.
- 3:07It's like, no big, I love it.
- 3:08Yeah.
- 3:09But that made me so anxious when I was little.
- 3:10You know, when they're like, pick, I remember playing, I played baseball, and that's how
- 3:14they used to pick the teams.
- 3:15You know, you get to pick a leader of each.
- 3:17And then it's like, who do they want in their team?
- 3:19Do you think it would have been your lack of hope skills that meant that you weren't picked
- 3:23rather than...
- 3:24Well, you know, there's no place in baseball.
- 3:26Oh, my.
- 3:27But, you know.
- 3:28We're cool.
- 3:29Oh, I love baseball.
- 3:30Sorry, me, yeah.
- 3:31It was the one you had tapped, tapped, tapped, with your back.
- 3:33Yeah.
- 3:34And you'd rather have those big gloves.
- 3:35You get quite fun, actually.
- 3:37Very good.
- 3:38Talked to us, Vic.
- 3:39So you know how I get so incredibly angry when someone says that I'm visiting a gambler.
- 3:45Oh, I wish you'd said guess what's the thing that riles me out the most.
- 3:48Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 3:49Yeah, exactly.
- 3:50It's, if you really want to get under my skin, approach me at a bar and say I'm visiting
- 3:54gambling or like put your hand up in an event and be like, it's an investing gambler.
- 3:57Like, my flower man does it sometimes, just to...
- 4:00Yeah.
- 4:01And poke the bear.
- 4:02And I might watch out and mate.
- 4:04Like, I'll remain a Valentine's Day, and he tried to set you to a...
- 4:07Oh, because he knows.
- 4:08Because he thought it was hilarious.
- 4:10And I...
- 4:11What a way to ruin Valentine's Day.
- 4:12Honestly.
- 4:13It was probably the worst Valentine's.
- 4:14On Refiction, we can laugh now.
- 4:15At the time, it didn't go down very well.
- 4:17He found it funny.
- 4:18I did not.
- 4:19He tried to get me to come.
- 4:20And then he's like, well, let's just have a drink.
- 4:22I was like, not in the casino either.
- 4:24Oh my god, no.
- 4:25Yeah.
- 4:26Also, it's quite gross places.
- 4:27I don't know.
- 4:28I was just standing there behind your partner with this other girl looking at our partners,
- 4:31like playing, I don't know what it was, some card game.
- 4:34Not good.
- 4:35And they were just like, oh, I was like, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 4:38You're like, this is just like fun management.
- 4:40Yeah.
- 4:41But then someone won, and that was quite exciting.
- 4:42Oh yeah.
- 4:43But then I was like, don't enjoy this place.
- 4:44Yeah.
- 4:45No one craic a smile.
- 4:47Yeah.
- 4:48But there's no...
- 4:49Do you know there's no like clocks or anything in casinos?
- 4:51So that people don't know what time it is.
- 4:52There's no windows.
- 4:53There's no...
- 4:54And there's tiles.
- 4:55Carpet tiles.
- 4:57Because some people sit there long enough that they shut themselves.
- 5:00No, that's not true.
- 5:01I swear to god.
- 5:02No, that's not true.
- 5:03I don't believe it.
- 5:04I researched Sky City to invest in it.
- 5:06And this was some of the stuff that was coming out.
- 5:08I didn't invest in it.
- 5:09But...
- 5:10Oh my god.
- 5:11Yeah, and it's usually older woman.
- 5:13It's usually older woman.
- 5:14It's usually older woman.
- 5:15Yeah.
- 5:16Imagine working and serving and taking drinks out to people that are not able to get themselves
- 5:22to the bathroom because they're so addicted to...
- 5:24Well, they're so like, oh my god, the next one could be it.
- 5:26The next one could be it if I stop now.
- 5:28That's so sad.
- 5:29Anyway, investing is not gambling.
- 5:31There is strategies behind investing.
- 5:33There is no strategy behind gambling.
- 5:35Investing, you can grow your mouth.
- 5:37Gambling reduces your appetite.
- 5:39I can keep going.
- 5:40Hypothetically, if someone did approach you at a bar and said that.
- 5:43Would you engage in the conversation to try and change their mind?
- 5:46Or would you decide it's a walk away moment?
- 5:49Depends if they're being as smart as.
- 5:51Which probably nine times out of ten.
- 5:53And probably after this podcast, people will probably come up to me.
- 5:55Oh my god.
- 5:56I kind of love that.
- 5:57I know.
- 5:58And it's like, um, but I would.
- 6:01But it's also, it's like with anything, any controversial topic.
- 6:04If someone is actually willing, like, I had a conversation with a friend the other night,
- 6:08who it was, a Trump supporter.
- 6:10Stop it.
- 6:11Why are they not on the podcast?
- 6:12And I was searching for this.
- 6:13Was genuinely interested in their viewpoint.
- 6:17And why they considered him to be, you know, such such a good thing for America.
- 6:23And I said, and I listened.
- 6:25And we kind of agreed to disagree.
- 6:28And was it a man or a woman?
- 6:31It was a man.
- 6:32Yeah.
- 6:33But it was also like, I'm not here to try and convince you into my camp of my views or my
- 6:39political views.
- 6:40I was just genuine and interested.
- 6:41And I, I don't know, people that are curious or want, or, or think that investing is gambling
- 6:46and actually want to know, is it, is it not?
- 6:49But then others that just do it just to, you know, if you're trying to be antagonizing,
- 6:53it's a different story.
- 6:54Yeah.
- 6:55Great.
- 6:56If you're open to a conversation or for your perspective to be changed, then you would.
- 7:00Yeah.
- 7:02In terms of body language.
- 7:04Yeah.
- 7:05Yes.
- 7:06So the reason I brought that up is there is this new craze that it's like a hybrid between
- 7:12investing and gambling.
- 7:13And people are still deciding, is it gambling?
- 7:15Is it investing?
- 7:16And it's got so much air time lately.
- 7:19I think I know where this is going.
- 7:20I've heard it at a dinner party.
- 7:22Yeah.
- 7:23It's quite interesting because I still don't know where I sit on it.
- 7:26And the more people I speak to, again, it's like so split.
- 7:30I don't know.
- 7:31It's so fascinating.
- 7:32Every day there's another headline about it.
- 7:34And it is, do you know what it is?
- 7:36You do the honors.
- 7:37It's, it's core prediction markets.
- 7:40And like instead of beating on sports, you know, people trade on whether real world events will happen.
- 7:47So things like, you know, will a recession happen this year?
- 7:51Will certain politicians get into power?
- 7:53Will interest rates fall before December?
- 7:55Like there's all these things.
- 7:56And there's pop culture ones as well.
- 7:57I was going to say how they all financially related.
- 7:59No.
- 8:00Nor are they sports, politics, business, pop culture.
- 8:03It's anything that you can verifiably source that has happened, right?
- 8:08So it's not like, will so be happy at the end of the day?
- 8:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:12It's like, no, there's no variable source that so for we happy or sad.
- 8:15It's like, but will interest rates fall before December?
- 8:19Yes, you know, there's an official announcement.
- 8:21All of that.
- 8:22So yeah.
- 8:23And you can come up with any predictions that you want.
- 8:26Is this what we spoke about a while ago, too, where it was like, will it be sunny tomorrow?
- 8:30You know, there was really small silly ones that came up with the news.
- 8:34But people like buy shares in the outcome.
- 8:37So you can actually make money or lose money.
- 8:39And the being tells you is it's not just something you go on and you click yes or no.
- 8:45You know, it's like an Instagram story where it's like, do you want to see more of this, yes or no?
- 8:49You genuinely have to put money up.
- 8:51So they are now starting to be used as genuine forecasting tools.
- 8:57Because it's predicting who's going to win Best Actor at the Oscars.
- 9:00It's quite so clever.
- 9:02Yeah.
- 9:03Whoa.
- 9:04I mean, a major if they started doing it with investing, but it wasn't actually, you know, it was about investing.
- 9:09Yeah.
- 9:10There's ones about the S&P 500, there's ones about the oil price, there's ones, it's crazy.
- 9:14And you know, you've got, if you think about the S&P 500, so the top 500 companies in the US, there is analysts.
- 9:20Thousands of analysts around the world trying to figure out what the return will be for the year.
- 9:26Will it be up?
- 9:27Will it be down?
- 9:28Like, you know, what will it be?
- 9:29And they're looking at an analyst's what?
- 9:31For anyone that doesn't know?
- 9:32So they're analyzing like economic data, company data, like everything.
- 9:36Their researchers, they're analyzing all this data trying to figure out, you know, will it be up?
- 9:40Will it be down?
- 9:41And here you've got a platform that has hundreds of thousands of people around the world that is now
- 9:49sometimes better predicting than these like, yeah.
- 9:55So it's kind of fascinating though, because I almost feel like if there was no money involved,
- 10:00it would be great because then you could get a sense check for what's going on.
- 10:04But then you could also sway it, right?
- 10:06Because I'd be like, well, I'm not putting up anything, so I'm just going to click no.
- 10:09And you know, so because there's money, it's actually a much more accurate predictor or forecasting tool.
- 10:16And if there was an event and it was like, yes, I think that it's going to be sunny tomorrow.
- 10:21And if there is like a 70% chance it's going to be sunny, then you have to put up 70 cents a share.
- 10:27And if that happens, then you get paid a dollar.
- 10:30So you've put up 70 cents and you get paid a dollar.
- 10:32If it doesn't happen, you get zero.
- 10:33So you've lost 70 cents.
- 10:34Okay, so it's not like you can put in a different amount of money in.
- 10:38You can do lots of predictions, you can create your own predictions.
- 10:41It's got to be quite a binary outcome, right?
- 10:43Let's look at a pop culture one because that's fun.
- 10:45Okay.
- 10:46Who are you looking to find these?
- 10:48So there's this platform called Kelsey.
- 10:51I think that's how you say it.
- 10:53Anyway, it's been founded by a female.
- 10:55She is kind of the youngest self-made billionaire.
- 10:57It's now worth $11 billion.
- 10:59She's worth like over a billion dollars.
- 11:01She's 29.
- 11:02It's quite wild.
- 11:03And they've just got approval like regulatory approval in the US.
- 11:07So you know, they're not considered a beating site.
- 11:10It's actually like a regulated platform, which is quite wild.
- 11:14This is crazy.
- 11:15This is like a whole new asset class.
- 11:17Yes.
- 11:18It's just like owning outcomes.
- 11:19It's kind of what you...
- 11:20Wow.
- 11:21Yeah.
- 11:22And so you can go, yeah, politics, sports, crypto, climate.
- 11:25Is this pop culture?
- 11:26Even mentioned, it's like, will Trump say yes more than 50 times in his next speech?
- 11:30You know, shit like, that's like...
- 11:31This is so cool.
- 11:33It's almost like a financial version of a general knowledge quiz.
- 11:38Yeah.
- 11:39But you can make real money, you can lose real money as well.
- 11:42Best director for the Oscars, best actors so much of it.
- 11:45Who will successfully take over Warner Brothers?
- 11:48We should have looked at this a few weeks ago.
- 11:50Oh, I'm sorry.
- 11:51We're lost to be fair.
- 11:52Yeah.
- 11:53Yeah.
- 11:54But this is a thing, very few people thought Paramount.
- 11:56So the payoff was much greater because the odds were lower.
- 11:59Right.
- 12:00But do you think then, and is there only binary answers, like two answers?
- 12:03No.
- 12:04So there's like...
- 12:05There's one here.
- 12:06There's the deliveries this quarter.
- 12:08And you've got 2.9 million, 3.1 million, 3.1 million.
- 12:11And so there's like lots of outcomes within that question, if that makes sense.
- 12:16Kind of.
- 12:17So will it be 3 million or more, and there's yes or no?
- 12:21Will it be 3.1 million?
- 12:24Yes or no.
- 12:25Because I think the thing about the two answer within a question.
- 12:28What you just said in terms of...
- 12:30You're kind of beating like, as in...
- 12:33If everyone thinks Netflix is going to take over one of brothers
- 12:37and 1% of people say Paramount, they'll be people that just click that
- 12:41because it's going to be a better payoff if they win.
- 12:43So there is a beating element, but then things like Tesla deliveries this quarter.
- 12:47If you were like, very knowledgeable on Tesla,
- 12:51and this is what's also come into the controversy is inside a trading.
- 12:55There's nothing stopping the CFO of Tesla who's very close to the numbers.
- 13:01This is kind of weird, but huge.
- 13:03It's like a weird hybrid, and I'm just kind of like,
- 13:06more here about it.
- 13:07It's investing.
- 13:08The more here about it, it's gambling.
- 13:10It's just like, I don't really know what to...
- 13:13Do you only do like about it?
- 13:14I like that it's making and investing more interesting.
- 13:17Yes.
- 13:18As in, I think a lot of people struggle with the stock market or things that are intangible.
- 13:23Even crypto, there's a lot of people that don't like investing in those things
- 13:26because they don't understand it.
- 13:27But a lot of these, if you've got an area of genius and it's politics,
- 13:31and you can make money through it, it's kind of cool.
- 13:33And like these production markets have been around for so long,
- 13:37but the reason that these have gathered so much attention lately is crypto technology.
- 13:42So that is made global participation way easier,
- 13:46and the transactions faster, quicker.
- 13:48So it's got a lot of momentum,
- 13:50and then also all the geopolitical events that we've had lately,
- 13:54the US election, it's made people interested
- 13:57and being able to predict on new and exciting things, also social media.
- 14:02And then I can say that Kaleishi.
- 14:04Kaleishi.
- 14:05It's such a...
- 14:06I don't love the branding of it.
- 14:07Kaleishi.
- 14:08Yeah, there's been obviously a lot of new regulation allowing them to operate.
- 14:12So...
- 14:13This is so interesting.
- 14:14It's a $44 billion market.
- 14:16There is $44 billion trading in production markets every year.
- 14:22We'll last, sorry, last year, which is more than Airbnb's entire revenue.
- 14:27$44 billion, that's...
- 14:30I mean sports betting is like a trillion dollars, so it's still pretty small.
- 14:33I'm just looking through this.
- 14:35And it is, like, who will win Big Brother Brazil in 2026?
- 14:39So who will win?
- 14:40Who will, Big Brother, right?
- 14:41You would know.
- 14:42So it's kind of like there is...
- 14:43Yeah.
- 14:44Yeah, like, who will win the battery at season 22?
- 14:46Oh my God, we should do...
- 14:47What's the next topic for the curve podcast?
- 14:50I'm just telling everyone in advance, guys bet, it's going to be this, not this.
- 14:54But yeah, like, market manipulation as well, right?
- 14:57Like, we could very much do that and then you're kind of manipulating.
- 15:00But I was looking up some of the most rogue productions.
- 15:04Will aliens be confirmed by 2030?
- 15:06What other ones are there?
- 15:07Will a large asteroid hit Earth before 2035?
- 15:10And will Taylor Swift announce a pregnancy in 2026?
- 15:14Yes to that.
- 15:15Yes, yes.
- 15:17This is kind of fun, I really like it.
- 15:21Where does the money go when you invest it?
- 15:23Like, how do you get it out if you win money?
- 15:25So the way the platform makes money is obviously just trade, so they just take fees.
- 15:29But it's through everyone that uses the platform, essentially.
- 15:33So then you get paid out by the amount of money coming in.
- 15:36Yeah.
- 15:37So if we were betting against each other, sorry, if we were predicting...
- 15:39And against each other.
- 15:40If we were investing against each other.
- 15:41Then I would get your money.
- 15:44If I won and you would lose, do you know what I mean?
- 15:46It's quite clever.
- 15:47Yeah.
- 15:48So it's...
- 15:49And then bear a little fee in between on the platform.
- 15:51But then where...
- 15:52So that's why people are like, it's cheers, essentially, because...
- 15:55Oh, you're buying off other people just out of the shoes.
- 15:57Yes.
- 15:58I mean, not directly, but it's essentially, like, cheeses is just a platform that takes fees.
- 16:03I am not saying that cheeses is...
- 16:05Be saying credit to anything.
- 16:07But when you buy cheeses in a company,
- 16:11you're trading off each other.
- 16:13You're not trading with the company.
- 16:15You're only trading with the company.
- 16:17You're buying cheeses off a company when it first comes to market, when it first IPOs.
- 16:20Yeah.
- 16:21But how does the money get pulled out of this?
- 16:23Is it the same way it would...
- 16:25Like a DIY account.
- 16:26You create an account, you link your account.
- 16:28And then if you want to pull the money out that you win.
- 16:30Yeah.
- 16:31You load up into your digital wallet.
- 16:32And then you predict things.
- 16:34Oh, no.
- 16:35And then I think you've opened a can of wounds.
- 16:37I really can see myself getting so into that.
- 16:40You know what I was doing when I was prepping for this?
- 16:42I was like, we should have done this at the end of last year with our productions.
- 16:45And actually put real money behind it.
- 16:47That was so good.
- 16:49Oh, this is quite...
- 16:51I mean, there's corruption, tomatoes, there's televisions.
- 16:54So many things.
- 16:55It's actually started to quite accurately predict future events.
- 17:00So it's like outperformed polls, expert forecasts.
- 17:04And it's kind of...
- 17:05I kind of like it and it's the power of the people.
- 17:07People all over the world using this thing.
- 17:09They have so many different insights.
- 17:11I quite like this because I feel like this is a great platform for people who perhaps
- 17:18don't feel super confident with what's happening in financials of a business.
- 17:22But if you've watched Gossip Girl 500 times and you know what happens,
- 17:26oh, that's a bad example, it's already aired.
- 17:28But you know, kind of a cool way to engage people in the idea of making money.
- 17:32But I also feel like it's gambling.
- 17:35Yeah.
- 17:36That's what I mean.
- 17:37I mean, I'm not convinced.
- 17:38I'd love to know what people think.
- 17:39I'd love to know if people think it's gambling or investing.
- 17:42Even investing, right?
- 17:43If we take the oil price, for example.
- 17:45There are people that trade and invest in commodities.
- 17:50And therefore, when you're investing, you are kind of making a prediction.
- 17:55You're making a prediction that this company is going to be bigger and better in the future.
- 17:59And my money's going to grow.
- 18:00So I can kind of see...
- 18:02I keep flipping because I can see both sides.
- 18:04Yeah, I don't know how...
- 18:06I don't know how to think about it.
- 18:07Yeah.
- 18:08Maybe we can put a poll in the somewhere when you're listing.
- 18:13I'm pretty sure if you open it, also do think this platform is gambling or investing.
- 18:17Please leave comments quite interested to hear.
- 18:20I just can see it getting addictive.
- 18:22And I think when you think about the worst part about gambling is the addiction piece.
- 18:27You know, like you can't really get addicted to investing in the S&P 500, can you?
- 18:32Oh, if you do, that's probably great.
- 18:34Yeah.
- 18:35We have more money in it.
- 18:36It's like cool.
- 18:37And there's like, there's an element of prediction there, right?
- 18:41Well, sorry, there's an element of probability that, look, the stock market has done 10% per year on average for the last 30 years.
- 18:48So, you know, I have the...
- 18:50With all the information in hand, I have the best guess that it's going to keep delivering something about that return for the next few years or the next, you know, for the long term.
- 18:58So, that's why you invest in the S&P 500, because it's a probability that it will continue to do in the future.
- 19:03And so, how is this different?
- 19:05Because all your...
- 19:06You're putting money in something based on the probability of historical data.
- 19:11So, I'm kind of...
- 19:12It's the regulation piece that I think is confusing.
- 19:14Yeah.
- 19:15Because if you work...
- 19:16You're right, if you work on a show, like I worked on Survivor.
- 19:18Yeah.
- 19:19If I was a producer on that show and one of the bets was that, and I've seen the editing.
- 19:23You were doing 100%.
- 19:24Yeah.
- 19:25So, I don't know how you would regulate in the same way you do with an investment.
- 19:29Because it's very obvious if you work at a company or you're privy information.
- 19:33Maybe AI will just track everything about our life.
- 19:37And you'll go to vote on Ariana Grande or Beyonce and you'll go,
- 19:40You work at KCFM.
- 19:42You're not able to do this.
- 19:44Yeah.
- 19:45But, yeah, governments right now are kind of questioning, like, is this gambling?
- 19:50Is it financial markets?
- 19:52And there's actually been some controversy because you can kind of...
- 19:55Like, there's one trader that made 1.2 million.
- 19:57No way.
- 19:58People are making shit loads anyway.
- 19:59Yeah.
- 20:00But, betting on, like, military actions for that happens.
- 20:03So, like, you're betting on war.
- 20:05You're betting on death.
- 20:06You're not like there is a bit of a stark side to it.
- 20:09Yeah.
- 20:10That's what's kind of called for, like, tighter regulation.
- 20:13Government's getting involved.
- 20:14Because also, when someone's putting a million dollars down there,
- 20:17they think someone's going to invade.
- 20:18If they have vested interests in something bad happening,
- 20:21then they can say so.
- 20:22Yeah.
- 20:23But also, if you think about the reverse of it, right?
- 20:25If someone's invested in the outcome.
- 20:27Oh, yes.
- 20:28Yeah.
- 20:29People's morals could come into question when it comes down to,
- 20:31who do you pick for the best Oscar for the best actor?
- 20:35Well, it's like when...
- 20:36Yeah, it's like why politicians can't trade or invest in shares, really.
- 20:41Like, they've got very strict rules because otherwise, it's like,
- 20:44yes, I'm going to give this change to this healthcare policy
- 20:46that's going to benefit this healthcare company that I've got shares in.
- 20:49You know, I like it's all...
- 20:51Money is power.
- 20:52Money is power.
- 20:53Very complex.
- 20:55But yes, I do like this platform because it was started by a woman.
- 21:00And I'm like, go you.
- 21:02Just, you know, like having the foresight to create something like this.
- 21:06I don't know how it started.
- 21:07Let's try it.
- 21:08Yeah.
- 21:09And that joke would be to ask her.
- 21:10She'd have such a better answer than I do.
- 21:12That's for sure.
- 21:13No.
- 21:15I just think it would be really interesting.
- 21:17But maybe her background is betting or investing.
- 21:22Yeah.
- 21:23Because that'd be really interesting for what she came to create the platform.
- 21:26I was the use case, actually.
- 21:28Was it to help people build wealth or is it gamification?
- 21:31Is it...
- 21:32Is it to create a gambling?
- 21:33Is it to control, you know, having more controlled environment for gambling?
- 21:37Is it, yeah, it would be interesting to know.
- 21:39Yeah.
- 21:40Also saw that female participation last year in production markets doubled.
- 21:46Because they started introducing like pop culture entertainment.
- 21:48I was like, hmm.
- 21:49I was kind of like, guys, come on, we should be.
- 21:53You know, predicting on the oil price and the price of gold and the...
- 21:57Yeah.
- 21:58Just because they're talking about, like, sleep.
- 22:00Timothy, Shalamey, you know, winning best acting.
- 22:02Come on, guys.
- 22:03Yeah.
- 22:04Oh my God.
- 22:05We have to start our pop quiz.
- 22:08Oh, yes.
- 22:09I've sent Lucy, our social media manager, a message saying, we must start this.
- 22:14Oh.
- 22:15So that's going to be coming.
- 22:16I'm going to be thinking...
- 22:17I'm going to be so competitive.
- 22:18I'm going to current now this.
- 22:19You cannot.
- 22:20You won't know.
- 22:21Oh, it's these questions.
- 22:22What was I debating?
- 22:23We both had a penny drop.
- 22:26Let's go ahead if anyone watched that video.
- 22:28At the exact same moment we both go.
- 22:32One of the bets is the oil price.
- 22:35Oh, oh my God.
- 22:37Which has just absolutely gone crazy the last few weeks.
- 22:42Could I tell you that?
- 22:43Last week.
- 22:44Yeah.
- 22:45Something I'm really proud of is that I got home the other day and my darling father said,
- 22:51have you filled my car up?
- 22:52And I said, no, dad, I haven't, but I will tomorrow.
- 22:55And he said, quick, quick, quick, quick, the oil prices are going to be going up.
- 22:59And I thought, ding, ding, ding, I'm a clever girl.
- 23:03I know why.
- 23:04And I know it's really sad reason why they've gone up.
- 23:06But I had one of those, oh my God.
- 23:08I know what's going on in the world moment.
- 23:10And I was actually quite proud of it.
- 23:12And have you seen the pictures of everyone at the petrol stations?
- 23:14Did you go?
- 23:15No, my dad actually ended up going.
- 23:16He went at 10 pm last time.
- 23:17Why?
- 23:18No, there's just like cues out down the street in terms of petrol stations all around the world.
- 23:22Because people are clambering to fill up their cars.
- 23:24Because the oil price is going to, it's going up like every day.
- 23:27And so oil is a main ingredient in petrol.
- 23:29So when I say oil, I'm kind of talking about petrol as well.
- 23:32So we should all be booking any flights we're planning on taking.
- 23:34Yeah, I mean, they've probably already gone up.
- 23:36Because of all the air spaces has been disrupted and everything.
- 23:38But the reason the oil price has gone up is because of the conflict in the Middle East.
- 23:43And there's been, and we spoke about this last week or the before,
- 23:47about the closure of this tiny gap in the Middle East where all the ships effectively,
- 23:53all 20% of the world's oil leaves the Middle East and goes to the Western countries.
- 23:58So there is like the more that this goes on, the more conflict, the more intense it gets,
- 24:04the more the oil price just keeps going up and up and up.
- 24:07Because supply and demand, the supply's low, demand is high.
- 24:10And that means petrol is going up.
- 24:13Do you know what I think?
- 24:15Yes.
- 24:16Yes.
- 24:17I think in the last six months, maybe nine.
- 24:21Perhaps 12.
- 24:24I have become way more confident with spotting a trend when it happens.
- 24:28Nice.
- 24:29Because of this podcast, not because I'm reading the news,
- 24:32but because we talk about things that are themes and we see them evolve
- 24:36and we talk about them week to week.
- 24:38So if you're new to the curved podcast or the curved weekly,
- 24:41you may just be jumping in on some of these stories.
- 24:43But a lot of them we go back to because they're not quickly done in a second.
- 24:46No.
- 24:47So take time to evolve.
- 24:49And I have started to understand a little bit more about the people
- 24:54that would invest in oil.
- 24:56I am not saying that I want to invest in it.
- 25:00But what I'm saying is, you know, two months ago,
- 25:03when things started kicking off,
- 25:05if you are an investor who is chasing returns and returns only,
- 25:09investing in oil, quite a clever decision.
- 25:12Yeah.
- 25:13Because she runs the shelves, the BP's of the world.
- 25:15They've all gone up.
- 25:17And I think you can also invest in the commodity itself in the oil,
- 25:21in the oil price.
- 25:22Yeah.
- 25:23It's so hard, isn't it?
- 25:24Yeah.
- 25:25Because there's oil and gas ETFs as well.
- 25:28There's so many different ways that you could have...
- 25:31Yeah.
- 25:32If things were getting heightened and tensions were getting high
- 25:36in the Middle East and in the US,
- 25:38that you could have jumped on this trend.
- 25:40It is a short-term trend, I hope.
- 25:42It's a short-term trend.
- 25:43It's also, yeah, it's not the approach we talk about
- 25:46investing in terms of buying and selling.
- 25:49We're not trying to trade.
- 25:51Yeah.
- 25:52But I'm definitely not trying to say,
- 25:54oh, wow, that's an investment that I'd be making.
- 25:57I guess my point is just...
- 25:59There's people out there that sit on these screens looking for this stuff
- 26:02and would have made money out of it.
- 26:04But I like to focus more on the prediction markets.
- 26:08That seems to me like it's going to be something...
- 26:11It's going to be around for a while and investing in a trend like that.
- 26:15Do you mean investing in the trend of prediction markets?
- 26:18Yeah.
- 26:19Rather than...
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:21Something that might be hot and gone with them.
- 26:23And maybe a broader trend of conflict, right?
- 26:26So maybe it is investing in defense companies or things like that.
- 26:30A bit more of a broader trend because there has been increased more...
- 26:34What would a defense investment be?
- 26:37There's defense ETFs which invest in a lot of defense companies.
- 26:40What is...
- 26:41Sorry to sound...
- 26:42Sorry to say anything from...
- 26:44They can make ammunition.
- 26:46They can make weapons.
- 26:47They can make boats.
- 26:48They can make...
- 26:49It can be steel manufacturers.
- 26:50It can be anything.
- 26:51Like it depends on the kind of the company or the ETF.
- 26:54Because when you said that, all I thought was guns.
- 26:56No.
- 26:57And this is the whole thing with ethical investing, right?
- 26:59Is that I don't want to invest in controversial weapons.
- 27:02And I totally see why.
- 27:04But then there's two sides to a war usually.
- 27:08Therefor, you know, Russia, Ukraine.
- 27:10A lot of people were in support of Ukraine.
- 27:12But if you're not investing in defense companies,
- 27:16they're not getting the capital to be able to support.
- 27:19Yes, it might be Russia, but it also might be Ukraine.
- 27:21So it's like, it's a whole thing.
- 27:23God.
- 27:24There's been a few...
- 27:25Just to make it, that's really easy.
- 27:26There's been a few can of worms in this episode, I will say.
- 27:30But defense companies, again, have already...
- 27:32They've actually done really well, particularly in Europe.
- 27:36And it is because there has been increased outbreaks.
- 27:39It's increased.
- 27:40I feel tension.
- 27:42Yeah, like there's...
- 27:44Everyone's just a bit highly strong.
- 27:46Sorry, that's kind of really downplaying.
- 27:48But do you know what I mean?
- 27:49There's lots of extreme views that I reckon have been multiplied
- 27:54in the last 10 years versus, you know, the 10 years before that.
- 27:58So I think reflecting back what I think you're trying to say
- 28:02is there's been a ground swell of division over the last five to 10 years
- 28:08and we're starting to see that.
- 28:10We're not even starting.
- 28:11It's been...
- 28:12There's obviously so much war that's been happening ongoing.
- 28:15But it feels really...
- 28:18Everyone...
- 28:19It feels divisive.
- 28:20It feels...
- 28:21Everyone is sort of ready to pounce on.
- 28:23Their friend, if they've got a different opinion on something.
- 28:26It's very polarizing.
- 28:27It's very...
- 28:28Very like, left and right and that.
- 28:30Yeah.
- 28:31And obviously the more zoomed out government, country, version of that
- 28:35is that it feels like there's just so much...
- 28:39Yeah, completely.
- 28:40And my hatred and...
- 28:42Yeah.
- 28:43So in terms of the oil price that has gone up massively,
- 28:48it's over a hundred dollars when we're recording this podcast.
- 28:52And it hasn't been these levels since 2022.
- 28:56Which, remember, we had...
- 28:59That was post pandemic.
- 29:00So there was this rebound and everyone flying, everyone driving
- 29:05and all the oil producers had kind of stopped producing
- 29:08because there was no planes flying, no cars driving.
- 29:11And then all of a sudden it rebounded and the world was going to open again.
- 29:13And there was this huge shortage.
- 29:15And the oil price absolutely spiked.
- 29:18And we're now seeing where in that environment again,
- 29:21which is wild because that was such a one-off...
- 29:24You know, once in a generation of ent.
- 29:26And now we've seen it run in the space of four years twice.
- 29:30So this will have an effect on inflation.
- 29:34Like you said, airlines.
- 29:36It's one of their biggest expenses.
- 29:38They're going to increase their prices.
- 29:40Petrol.
- 29:41You know, now your dad running out to get petrol.
- 29:44He's going to have to fill his car up in a few weeks time
- 29:46if the petrol price is still high.
- 29:47That money has come from somewhere.
- 29:48Maybe it's him not spending on something else.
- 29:50Or do you know what I mean?
- 29:51It's...
- 29:52And also petrol.
- 29:53It's an everything.
- 29:54Like logistics companies.
- 29:55Amazon.
- 29:56You know, getting anything from Amazon.
- 29:57Their costs have gone up.
- 29:58You know, e-commerce.
- 29:59Everything.
- 30:00Seending parcels.
- 30:01Seending parcels.
- 30:02Getting your groceries delivered.
- 30:03Like that now will cost more.
- 30:04Oh, no.
- 30:05So it's not just filling your car up.
- 30:07And now you've got to pay more.
- 30:08It's like, no, no, no.
- 30:09Everything that uses oil,
- 30:11which is surprisingly a lot of things.
- 30:13And they'll tell you, sorry,
- 30:14the longer this goes on, the more damage it will do.
- 30:17And I think Trump said somewhere like,
- 30:19oh, it'd be over in a few weeks.
- 30:21I think there's any war that's been over in a few weeks.
- 30:23So...
- 30:24Do you?
- 30:25Okay.
- 30:26Interesting.
- 30:27You have said for ages the idea of inflation may be coming,
- 30:31may, may, may, and tariffs equal this.
- 30:34But just then you said inflation will happen.
- 30:37You were really quite.
- 30:39I know.
- 30:40I knew you picked up on that.
- 30:41No, I do.
- 30:42Did you actually?
- 30:43I do.
- 30:44I do think it will happen.
- 30:46I just don't think how it can't.
- 30:47But the caveat.
- 30:48There's always a big caveat.
- 30:50That is AI.
- 30:52Which, remember, we've got this offsetting,
- 30:54like, because people will be more productive.
- 30:56And you can do a lot more now,
- 30:58because you're more efficient.
- 30:59And, yeah, so there's like,
- 31:01if we take Amazon, for example,
- 31:03you know, the cost to move things around has gone massively.
- 31:06But now they've introduced AI,
- 31:08so they're more efficient.
- 31:09So it kind of like one offsets the other.
- 31:11So thank goodness for AI right now.
- 31:13It was what I'm saying.
- 31:14And I just hope that it keeps getting us more and more efficient
- 31:17and doing things much cheaper,
- 31:18because we've got this other kind of thing
- 31:20on the side that's making things more expensive,
- 31:22if that makes sense.
- 31:23I mean, it's fascinating, isn't it?
- 31:25Yeah.
- 31:26But, you know, how we mentioned,
- 31:28last year,
- 31:30it's the Asian stock markets,
- 31:31some of the best performing.
- 31:32We had South Korea, Japan.
- 31:34They are the countries that rely on oil
- 31:37from the Middle East the most
- 31:38out of anyone in the world.
- 31:39Oh, so they're the tankers?
- 31:40So, Japan gets 90% of its oil from the Middle East.
- 31:44It's stock exchange has had a really, really tough start
- 31:49to the year.
- 31:50So what is it?
- 31:51Where is it at?
- 31:52It's down 10%.
- 31:53But probably by the time this podcast comes out,
- 31:54it'll be down more.
- 31:55Wow.
- 31:56South Korea is down 20%.
- 31:57They get 70% of their oil from the Middle East.
- 32:00India was the same.
- 32:01It's said that it's hurting those stock markets
- 32:04that were probably like,
- 32:05woohoo!
- 32:06Oh my God, you know.
- 32:07You know, Japan had it had a stock market return
- 32:09like that for so long last year.
- 32:11And also bringing back 12 predictions.
- 32:14That was one of my predictions.
- 32:15Remember from the year before?
- 32:18But Japan, the other way you could think about it is
- 32:22if you want to see those economies doing better,
- 32:25you can invest in them.
- 32:27You know, like especially if they're down 10%,
- 32:29it could be a really amazing chance to think about
- 32:32buying in different places.
- 32:34Not advice, not advice on advice.
- 32:36There's actually a whole other thing here
- 32:38which probably failed, but like diversification, right?
- 32:42If you're getting 90% of your oil from one region,
- 32:46you know, like this,
- 32:47I know we talk about diversification and investing,
- 32:49but like in business too.
- 32:51In business, in a country, in anything.
- 32:55Like if you had one large customer in your business,
- 32:58you know, like that's a risk.
- 33:00Like there's, I don't know,
- 33:01it's a diversification across everything just
- 33:03because you never know what's going to happen.
- 33:05There's another angle also perhaps the idea
- 33:07that because there's so much reliance now on oil,
- 33:10that renewables and other companies
- 33:13that have power, but perhaps,
- 33:16like companies may not have considered before,
- 33:18but now because there's a shortage of oil,
- 33:20that might go up.
- 33:21Yeah, well it encourages and accelerates
- 33:23like renewable energy projects, right?
- 33:25I'm sure Japan now will be like,
- 33:28oh shit, you know, those renewable energy projects
- 33:31that were plotting along,
- 33:32that weren't getting a lot of funding.
- 33:34Because you know, like now,
- 33:36we have to otherwise,
- 33:38you know, it's going to completely hurt our economy.
- 33:40So yeah, it does, you know,
- 33:42when there's crisis in the world,
- 33:43when there's intense market movements or cycles,
- 33:46like it definitely does bring about change.
- 33:48And I, well, the oil price is going up.
- 33:51I do think it will highlight for a lot of countries
- 33:53and economies the need to fast track and not rely on.
- 33:56I mean, at least it's so volatile now.
- 34:00It's like you can't rely on an area
- 34:02for your main resource to fuel your country
- 34:06that's been so volatile.
- 34:08That's, yeah.
- 34:14There's another investing trend.
- 34:16We kind of alluded to it.
- 34:18We'll spoke about it.
- 34:19I think when you had Abby on the podcast,
- 34:21we did.
- 34:22We had someone filling in for that.
- 34:24God.
- 34:25I forgot about that.
- 34:26A bit of a part time.
- 34:27Yeah.
- 34:28And where, yeah, we spoke about,
- 34:30I actually can't even remember what the main points were.
- 34:32But it was the idea that loneliness has become more
- 34:35of a business problem than it's ever been before,
- 34:38because, you know, it was kind of up until recently,
- 34:41considered a personal issue,
- 34:43like your lonely deal with it yourself.
- 34:45But actually, the stats and the research
- 34:47were showing that lonely people were producing less work
- 34:51and therefore there's a productivity impact.
- 34:54Yeah.
- 34:55Yeah.
- 34:56It's a real trend that loneliness,
- 34:58I don't know, epidemic,
- 34:59if you want to call it that,
- 35:00but it is becoming more socially acceptable
- 35:03to spend time alone.
- 35:05It's coming through in a lot of stats
- 35:07in terms of things like a lot of solo activities,
- 35:11so things like travel, dining out theatre,
- 35:14like a lot of companies
- 35:15and industries are starting to see
- 35:17and adapt to people doing things by themselves.
- 35:21I even noticed the other day,
- 35:23I was out for dinner with my mum.
- 35:25And there was this guy sitting there
- 35:26with this giant plate of sashimi by himself.
- 35:29And I thought,
- 35:31that is the dream.
- 35:32I would love having to share.
- 35:34Yeah.
- 35:35To be sitting in front of 40 pieces of salmon sashimi
- 35:38and inhaling it all myself.
- 35:39Yeah.
- 35:40But it was interesting,
- 35:41because I did notice it.
- 35:42I thought, oh, that's quite cool,
- 35:43that guy's by himself.
- 35:44But yeah, people are doing it more.
- 35:46But is it like a case of loneliness,
- 35:47I have no friends?
- 35:48Or is it a case of,
- 35:49I'm actively being solo
- 35:51because I want me time?
- 35:53I don't know.
- 35:54Yeah.
- 35:55But there is...
- 35:56Do you think one's influenced the other, though,
- 35:57because there has been a trend
- 35:59for people to spend more time by themselves,
- 36:01to have a solo date to the movies.
- 36:03A lot of people talk about it being quite important.
- 36:06There's probably a fine balance, right?
- 36:08It doesn't think too far one way
- 36:09that we kind of isolate ourselves
- 36:11and end up having AI companions
- 36:13and trying to have children with them.
- 36:15Oh, my God.
- 36:16I'm sorry.
- 36:17Or...
- 36:18Yeah, but then I think there is a balance, right,
- 36:20of not...
- 36:21of enjoying your own time.
- 36:23And there's probably a byproduct
- 36:25of less health and wellness trend.
- 36:27But the solo travel market
- 36:30was worth about 100 billion last year,
- 36:34sorry, in 2024.
- 36:36And it was expected to be about
- 36:38190 billion by 2030.
- 36:40So people are booking solo tickets,
- 36:43solo flights,
- 36:44solo fast food orders have gone up
- 36:46like 50 percent since 2021.
- 36:50What?
- 36:51And...
- 36:52I wonder if was there a huge wave of breakups
- 36:54or something because of COVID?
- 36:56I think it's people living alone,
- 36:58much more alone than they have in the past.
- 37:00You know, like urban cities.
- 37:02The apartments are small,
- 37:04people living in them,
- 37:06they're living alone,
- 37:07they're not having children,
- 37:08or they're having children later in life,
- 37:09increased divorce.
- 37:10All of that would lead to people
- 37:12doing more solo activities.
- 37:14But we're really seeing it from restaurants
- 37:16to travel, to entertainment.
- 37:18It's quite wild.
- 37:19It's kind of interesting.
- 37:20Yeah.
- 37:21I don't know how I feel about this.
- 37:23However,
- 37:24I wonder if there's a lot to do with the fact that
- 37:27women have become way more independent.
- 37:29We don't need to be in relationships.
- 37:32We'll be in relationships if we want to,
- 37:34and they're bringing something to our life.
- 37:36Not purely financial stability,
- 37:38which it has been traditionally.
- 37:40I just wonder if there's a flow on of
- 37:42a lot of people have probably left
- 37:45relationships that are unthoughtful.
- 37:47Yeah, or just aren't...
- 37:49They're not settling for companionship now.
- 37:51Yeah.
- 37:52It's like, no, no, no.
- 37:53I don't need to settle for companionship.
- 37:56I can be my own companion,
- 37:57because my own financial earner
- 37:59and I'm my own...
- 38:00Yeah.
- 38:01I don't know.
- 38:02I'm not sure if I'm heading into a feminist approach to that,
- 38:04but I just feel like if there's a ginormous trend
- 38:06of more people being alone,
- 38:08that gene really means more people being single
- 38:10or not in relationships.
- 38:12Yeah.
- 38:13And it's really interesting.
- 38:14And it's really interesting.
- 38:15And it's really interesting.
- 38:16People living longer, people,
- 38:17I think I'd love to know through these stats,
- 38:19through these stats,
- 38:20you know, breakdowners.
- 38:21And the age too.
- 38:22Yeah.
- 38:23Because it's interesting that at the same time
- 38:24that living is the most
- 38:27exorbitantly expensive,
- 38:29it's either being really.
- 38:30Yeah.
- 38:31And people are still living alone.
- 38:33You would almost think that that would be the opposite.
- 38:36When things are so expensive,
- 38:38that everyone's forced to figure out a way to have a date.
- 38:40Probably functionally everything, right?
- 38:42Marriage is being more expensive,
- 38:44child keeping more expensive.
- 38:46Yeah, everyone's houses getting smaller,
- 38:48because we're living in, you know,
- 38:49multiple living urban areas,
- 38:50divorce rates higher,
- 38:52females being more financially,
- 38:54you know, free and illiterate.
- 38:57There's probably combination,
- 38:58everything, really.
- 38:59There's a lot going on here.
- 39:00There's a lot going on here.
- 39:01There is a lot going on here.
- 39:02It's like, it's like,
- 39:03it's like, like, combustion,
- 39:04like, oh, God.
- 39:05I don't know, I don't know.
- 39:06No, because someone sent us this on Instagram.
- 39:08They sent us a video
- 39:09and it was this guy saying essentially
- 39:12that that what's about to happen
- 39:14and it was really dire.
- 39:16And I watched five seconds of it.
- 39:18And I actually think she's the AI champ.
- 39:20Was it the one?
- 39:21No, it wasn't.
- 39:22It was about war, actually.
- 39:24And I messaged back.
- 39:26I was like, I can't even get past the first five seconds.
- 39:28And she's replied and I haven't replied yet.
- 39:30But I just...
- 39:31I watched this expert video,
- 39:32I don't know who it was,
- 39:33but they were an expert on nuclear war.
- 39:36And they were asked if there was a nuclear war outbreak.
- 39:39What is the, you know,
- 39:40where, where in the world
- 39:42would be the safest
- 39:43and what country would survive.
- 39:45And they were like,
- 39:46the only country that would survive
- 39:48would be New Zealand
- 39:49and a little bit of Australia.
- 39:50And I was like,
- 39:51oh my goodness.
- 39:52Yeah, but also like.
- 39:54I was like, oh my gosh.
- 39:55I was kind of like,
- 39:56how many people are going to hit our way?
- 39:57You know, I was like, oh my goodness.
- 39:59Yeah, but also, oh no.
- 40:01Imagine,
- 40:03we're the only island in the world.
- 40:04I mean, I don't even know if I'd wanted the apocalypse.
- 40:06I know neither.
- 40:07I just...
- 40:08She's me.
- 40:09We're all only programming with our cousins.
- 40:11But it was like,
- 40:12because agriculture is key to survival
- 40:13and we've got our own
- 40:14to self-sustaining agriculture.
- 40:15Anyway, it was like this whole thing.
- 40:16And part of me was like, yeah,
- 40:18but also no.
- 40:19Yeah, I do not want to be the only survivor
- 40:20in a nuclear war
- 40:21and please no nuclear war.
- 40:22Anyway.
- 40:23I was thinking
- 40:24if everything goes
- 40:26absolutely tits up globally,
- 40:28I mean, it's kind of happening already.
- 40:29But if it was,
- 40:30we're so lucky.
- 40:36So we've got,
- 40:37is this how community corner?
- 40:41What are we calling this?
- 40:42What are we calling this?
- 40:43A curved community corner?
- 40:44Oh, well, I don't know.
- 40:45CCC.
- 40:46Can we workshop that?
- 40:47I'm feeling uncreative at 5 p.m.
- 40:49Yeah, no fair enough.
- 40:50So in the curved community corner,
- 40:52it's a placeholder name.
- 40:53It's a placeholder name.
- 40:54Anyway, this is from Carl Hart.
- 40:57Carl Hart.
- 40:58Kia ora.
- 40:59It's buying Birkshire Hathaway,
- 41:01like buying an ETF
- 41:02that Waza has created.
- 41:04I'm sorry.
- 41:05Can we pause that someone is still calling in Waza?
- 41:07We talked about this.
- 41:08AKA Warren Buffett is what he's meaning.
- 41:11It's buying Birkshire Hathaway,
- 41:12like buying an ETF that Waza has created,
- 41:14would be investing in what Birkshire Hathaway has invested in.
- 41:17Yes, essentially,
- 41:18it is an investment company
- 41:21that you can buy shares in,
- 41:22that then invest that money into,
- 41:24you know, I guess the profits
- 41:26and the revenue and earnings from
- 41:28all the underlying businesses that they invest in,
- 41:30dictate the profit for Birkshire Hathaway.
- 41:35So yes, when you're investing in Birkshire Hathaway,
- 41:37you've got this large pod of cash
- 41:39that they're sitting on,
- 41:40and then all these other businesses that they've invested in.
- 41:42So it is kind of like an ETF,
- 41:44but it's like,
- 41:45it's like investing in an investment company,
- 41:47but maybe you could make the Birkshire Hathaway ETF
- 41:50that we can't get.
- 41:51Why did you think that Carl Hart was a guy?
- 41:53Carl.
- 41:54But it says,
- 41:55Kel Hathaway,
- 41:56I have one more question.
- 41:57I don't know why I thought, yeah.
- 41:58Hey.
- 41:59Yeah.
- 42:00Sorry.
- 42:01I don't know.
- 42:02Anyway, there was another really cute email,
- 42:04but we have to keep it anonymous.
- 42:05Kia ora, Soph.
- 42:06Huh.
- 42:07Why did they not say hi to you?
- 42:09I'm going back through some of the podcasts,
- 42:11and just listen to your chat with Pete about rent investing.
- 42:13I have 48k left to pay off my mortgage
- 42:16and have, wow, amazing.
- 42:18And have income coming in via Airbnb.
- 42:21So I reckon it's time to take the net step.
- 42:23Oh, right.
- 42:24So she's ready to do like an investment property like I did.
- 42:27Sorry, sorry, sorry.
- 42:28I knew it was six months ago that you posted,
- 42:30Pete had some availability.
- 42:31Is that still the case?
- 42:32If so, would love a referral.
- 42:34Absolutely love the journey.
- 42:35You and Vic, there you go.
- 42:36You got to meet Jim.
- 42:37Yeah.
- 42:38How it started me on?
- 42:39Joined with the beginners investing course last year.
- 42:41Love that.
- 42:42I'm a little bit scared as I'm late 40s
- 42:44and I've missed 30 years of investment opportunities
- 42:46and I only have 10 to 15 years left to correct that.
- 42:49So pedal to the metal.
- 42:51Oh, my God, I love this.
- 42:52I had a good sized house deposit sitting at an ordinary bank account
- 42:55for most of my 30s.
- 42:56Oh, God, that sucks.
- 42:58When I think about it now,
- 42:59and what I could have done with that money to grow it,
- 43:01I gave for the IOU course too.
- 43:03I'm spreading the word.
- 43:04That's so cool.
- 43:05I love that.
- 43:06I love that.
- 43:07Can I also just say for anyone that is interested
- 43:09in the way that I invested in my property,
- 43:12totally getting touched, we can put you in touch with Pete,
- 43:14but also I'm doing a property update
- 43:16in the next couple of months
- 43:18because, yeah, I've done it again.
- 43:21Good.
- 43:22No, no, twice.
- 43:23But we haven't gone into detail.
- 43:24I'm sorry.
- 43:25So that's going to be our account.
- 43:26Yeah, yeah, no.
- 43:27And yes, we do.
