- 0:11If you would, please turn to Jeremiah. At the
- 0:15same time, we're going to go through the doctrinal
- 0:17focus. Jeremiah, and then you're also going to
- 0:19turn to John 12. John 12, and then mark your
- 0:25Bibles, and then we'll start there. Westminster
- 0:28Confession. Of the Holy Scripture, chapter 1,
- 0:33section 4. Let's read together. The authority
- 0:37of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to
- 0:41be believed and obeyed, depends not upon the
- 0:44testimony of any man or church, but wholly upon
- 0:49God, who is the truth itself, the author thereof,
- 0:54and therefore it is to be received, because it
- 0:57is the word of God. All right, so why is this
- 1:03an important topic? Well, we live in some very
- 1:07wild days. I mean, I've seen more prophets come
- 1:12out of the woodwork this year than I've ever
- 1:14seen. That's kind of wild. And a lot of men and
- 1:22women, which is interesting, claim they hear
- 1:27a word from God, but it never matches the word
- 1:32of God. So that's a pause for all of us. It should
- 1:36be a pause for you. That someone hears a word
- 1:42from God, but then it does not match the word
- 1:46of God. And we go, he's a prophet. Let me say
- 1:49it this way. If I lived in the Old Testament
- 1:51as a proclaimer, a messenger of God, and I got
- 1:57one word wrong, they would stone me to death.
- 2:02Stone me to death. I would be killed. In our
- 2:07society, a man or a woman claimed that they have
- 2:11a message from God. They not only get one word
- 2:14wrong, they get it wrong, period. And they're
- 2:16called prophets. Why? Why? And why in Christendom
- 2:27do many believe what they say? And keep going
- 2:32back to these people. It's because they don't
- 2:37know the truth. And so God's people only speak
- 2:42what God has already said. Real true prophet.
- 2:47A messenger from God only speaks what God has
- 2:52already said. There is nothing more that we need
- 2:56besides the word. There's no new revelation.
- 3:03Okay? So we're going to ask the Lord that he
- 3:10would guide us through his word as we read Jeremiah
- 3:13and John, that we would come to understand the
- 3:16importance of speaking only what God has already
- 3:19said, not creating some new revelation. So Father,
- 3:25we come before you and we thank you. We thank
- 3:27you for your word. We thank you that your word
- 3:30is living and active, sharper than a two -edged
- 3:32sword, divides bone and marrow, soul and spirit,
- 3:35judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart
- 3:38of man. We thank you that we can come before
- 3:40you knowing that you have represented yourself
- 3:44through your word, through your church, and that
- 3:49you have given your church everything for life
- 3:52and godliness, which is your word. We thank you
- 3:56that... You have inspired your word that you
- 3:59have, you have through the inspiration guided
- 4:04men to write exactly what you have said. So Lord,
- 4:09as we open up your word and go through Jeremiah
- 4:11and John, and we see Jesus, help us to see that
- 4:15even Jesus only spoke what you have said. We
- 4:20praise you and thank you for your faithfulness
- 4:22and goodness in Jesus name. Amen. So let's read
- 4:27some very important statements here. I want you
- 4:30to notice we're going to go through verse one
- 4:31through 12, and then we're going to go to John
- 4:3344 through 50. The words of Jeremiah, the son
- 4:38of Hilkiah, one of the priests who were in Anathoth
- 4:44in the land of Benjamin, to whom the word of
- 4:48the Lord came in the days of Josiah, the son
- 4:52of Ammon, king of Judah, in the 13th year of
- 4:56his reign. It came also in the days of Joachim,
- 5:02son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end of
- 5:05the 11th year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah,
- 5:10king of Judah, until the captivity of Jerusalem
- 5:14in the fifth month. So here's the idea I want
- 5:17you to get. God sent his word to Jeremiah. In
- 5:24these three particular time periods. Specifically
- 5:28up until the captivity of Jerusalem. Why? Because
- 5:32there will be a period of time when God will
- 5:34not be speaking. And he doesn't speak through
- 5:39just anybody. He speaks through this one boy.
- 5:48Now the word. Of the Lord came to me saying,
- 5:52before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.
- 5:55And before you were born, I consecrated you and
- 5:57I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then
- 6:03I said, ah, Lord God, behold, I do not know how
- 6:07to speak for I am only a youth. But the Lord
- 6:10said to me, do not say I am only a youth for
- 6:13to all. Then the Lord put out his hand and...
- 6:31Touched my mouth and the Lord said to me, behold,
- 6:33I've put my words in your mouth. See, I have
- 6:38set you this day over nations and over kingdoms
- 6:40to pluck up, to break down, to destroy, to overthrow,
- 6:45to build, and to plant. And the word of the Lord
- 6:48came to me. Jeremiah, what do you see? And I
- 6:53said, I see an almond branch. And the Lord said
- 6:56to me, you have seen well, for I am watching
- 7:00over my word to perform it. Turn to John 12,
- 7:0844. And Jesus cried out and said, whoever believes
- 7:15in me, believes not in me, but in him who sent
- 7:18me. Whoever sees me, sees him who sent me. I
- 7:24have come into the world as light so that whoever
- 7:27believes in me may not remain in darkness. If
- 7:31anyone hears my words and does not keep them,
- 7:35I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge
- 7:39the world, but to save the world. The one who
- 7:42rejects me does not reject my words as a judge.
- 7:52That I have spoken will judge him on the last
- 7:54day. Isn't that interesting? For I have not spoken
- 8:00on my own authority. But the father who sent
- 8:03me has himself given me a commandment. What to
- 8:08say and what to speak. I know that his commandment
- 8:13is eternal life. And what I say, therefore I
- 8:16say as the father has told me. Now. Why is this
- 8:22important? Because there's a lot of dudes out
- 8:25there speaking for God. A lot of people out there
- 8:31speaking for God. How do you know which ones
- 8:34are from God and which ones aren't? See, God
- 8:38is the only one who sends his word. Christ is
- 8:42the word sent. We need nothing else. There's
- 8:47nothing new. There's no revelation. There's no,
- 8:50I had a dream. There's none of that. God's word
- 8:57is the dream. God's word is the word. God's word
- 9:00is enough. It's all we need. There's nothing
- 9:03else that man needs. Man does not live by bread
- 9:06alone, but by every word that comes from the
- 9:08mouth of God. We talked about this for like two
- 9:10weeks now, right? Why? Why do we feel like we
- 9:16have to come up with something different or new?
- 9:22To me, every time I open the word, it's new.
- 9:25It should be new to you. John 1 .14. And the
- 9:31word became flesh and dwelt among us. And we
- 9:34have seen his glory. Glory as the only son from
- 9:36the father. Full of grace and truth. You guys
- 9:41know what John 1 .1 says. In the beginning was
- 9:43the word. The word was with God. And the word
- 9:44was God. Christ is the word incarnate. And even
- 9:49Christ. Only spoke what the father told him to
- 9:54speak. Isn't that interesting? The God of all
- 9:59creation who created you and I, who holds all
- 10:02things together in his hands, only speaks what
- 10:06the father speaks. He doesn't even speak his
- 10:09own thing. But we got men who claim they speak
- 10:15for God, speaking their own thing. And we're
- 10:21on this road because I am very concerned we're
- 10:26living in a, not just a post -Christian America,
- 10:33but a anti -truth America. And the only thing
- 10:44that stems the tide that plugs the hole is the
- 10:47church. And she must. Stand on the truth. In
- 10:54Jeremiah 1 -3, the words of Jeremiah, the son
- 10:58of Hilkiah, one of the priests who were in Anathoth,
- 11:03in the land of Benjamin, to whom the word of
- 11:06the Lord came. Did the word of the Lord come
- 11:11to you? It did, through Christ. That's the point.
- 11:18There's nothing else we need. The word of the
- 11:22Lord did come to us and he gave us his word.
- 11:25And in his divine preservation, not only has
- 11:29preserved these 66 books, but he has preserved
- 11:36his word from generation to generation. The word
- 11:44of the Lord came in the days of Josiah, the son
- 11:46of Ammon, king of Judah, in the 13th year of
- 11:49his reign. It also came also in the days of Joachim,
- 11:54the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end
- 11:57of the 11th year of Zedekiah, the son of Josiah,
- 12:02king of Judah, until the captivity of Jerusalem
- 12:05in the fifth month. You know, there's one thing
- 12:09that the church will never go without that Israel
- 12:12did. God stopped speaking to them. But God never
- 12:18stopped speaking to his church. Because he speaks
- 12:22through his word. How many of us go to him and
- 12:28ask him to speak through his word? Do we spend
- 12:33the time in it to hear what he has to say? Lord,
- 12:38teach me your ways that I may know you and have
- 12:41favor with you. Where do we learn his ways? In
- 12:43his word. Second principle. God is the only one
- 12:49who anoints those who speak on his behalf, not
- 12:52man. God anoints the man. God appoints the man.
- 13:00God ordains the man. No one else. John 12, 44
- 13:11through 45. And Jesus cried out and said, whoever
- 13:13believes in me, believes not in me, but in him
- 13:18who sent me. And whoever sees me, sees him who
- 13:21sent me. Do you see that? Even Christ, who is
- 13:26the second person of the Trinity, God incarnate,
- 13:29was sent by the Father. He was God's. He was,
- 13:36in reality, The one who was appointed since the
- 13:41beginning of time to come and give his word.
- 13:46Jeremiah 1, 4 -6. Now the word came to me. The
- 13:51word of the Lord came to me. Do you see that?
- 13:53The word of the Lord came to me. Saying, before
- 13:58I formed you in the womb, I knew you. And before
- 14:01you were born, I consecrated you. I appointed
- 14:04you as a prophet to the nations. Then I said,
- 14:09ah, Lord God, behold, I do not know how to speak
- 14:11for I am only a youth. What's the reality here?
- 14:17That God before time has set aside men and preachers
- 14:24and those to bring the word and has consecrated
- 14:28them since before being born for the purpose
- 14:31of proclaiming the gospel and the truth of the
- 14:34word to the people. And it's interesting because
- 14:39if we claim that God is providential and God
- 14:42is sovereign, then we really need to come to
- 14:46the reality that God is the one who chooses that.
- 14:51Just because one seems gifted doesn't mean he's
- 14:54right. There's a lot more to it than that. Principle
- 15:02number three, the one whom God sends speaks only.
- 15:06What the Lord commands and nothing else. This
- 15:10is important. Because you can't speak anything
- 15:13outside of the scripture. Why? Because the scripture
- 15:21is the final authority in all things. It is the
- 15:23word of God. Even in translation. God has divinely
- 15:29preserved it. And you can clearly distinctly
- 15:34see the differences. of those that are bad translations
- 15:37versus those that are good translations. Because
- 15:41the good translations speak the truth consistently,
- 15:44regardless if it's King James to ESV. It's not
- 15:50just the King James. And so we also have men
- 15:56who say that that's the only word of God. See,
- 16:01Scripture says, Jesus says, My sheep know me
- 16:04and they know my voice. We know his word if we
- 16:07belong to him. And we also proved that out last
- 16:10week. Because you cannot know the word and understand
- 16:12the word unless the spirit of God is present
- 16:14in your life. It's impossible outside of the
- 16:18spirit of God to know and hear the word of God.
- 16:251 Corinthians 2 .14. Along with all the scripture
- 16:29we read last week. Look what it says here. John
- 16:3712, 46. I have come into the world as light so
- 16:42that whoever believes in me may not remain in
- 16:44darkness. What brings us out of darkness? Christ,
- 16:48his word. Your word is a lamp unto my feet and
- 16:56a light unto my path. So in Jeremiah 1, 7 -8,
- 17:05it says this, But the Lord said to me, Do not
- 17:09say I'm only a youth. For to all to whom I send
- 17:15you, you shall go. In other words, you don't
- 17:19have a choice, Jeremiah. Where I tell you you
- 17:22will go, you're going to go. I kind of like Jeremiah.
- 17:27He doesn't have a debate with God, unlike Moses.
- 17:31Moses was like, yeah. And he said, fine, I'll
- 17:35give you Aaron. Remember that? Yeah. Moses is
- 17:40a little braver than Jeremiah, I think. Jeremiah
- 17:43just knows. Okay. And wherever I command you,
- 17:47whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do you
- 17:49see that? Jeremiah only speaks what God has commanded.
- 17:58So should that not also be the litmus test for
- 18:00all of those men who claim to be prophets and
- 18:06speak something outside of the word of God? Verse
- 18:15eight, do not be afraid of them for I am with
- 18:18you to deliver you, declares the Lord. Jeremiah,
- 18:22you're going to go and you're going to speak
- 18:24and they're going to get upset. They're going
- 18:27to want to kill you. That's what Elijah said.
- 18:31Elijah said that. Haven't these people killed
- 18:36all your prophets? But don't worry, I'm with
- 18:40you, Jeremiah. Why? Principle number four, the
- 18:48word of God is the final, is and has, I was supposed
- 18:52to put end there, is and has. The final authority
- 18:56over all things. By it, God sets free, judges,
- 19:03gives life, and destroys. Isn't that interesting?
- 19:10That's how powerful the word of God is. Look
- 19:12what it says in John 12, 47 through 48. If anyone
- 19:15hears my words and does not keep them, I do not
- 19:20judge him, for I did not come to judge the world,
- 19:23but to save the world. The one who rejects me
- 19:26and does not receive my words has a judge. The
- 19:31word that I have spoken will judge him on the
- 19:36last day. What is the judge? The word of God.
- 19:39The word of God judges us. That's why it is sharper
- 19:44than a two -edged sword. I mean, it literally
- 19:47judges my thoughts and intentions. It knows what
- 19:52I'm thinking and why. I'm thinking it. Do you
- 19:56know why you think the way you think? I don't
- 19:59think there's a single person that understands
- 20:00why we think the way we think. I don't understand
- 20:03sometimes. Like, why am I thinking that? But
- 20:07God knows. Jeremiah 1, 9 through 10. Then the
- 20:14Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. And
- 20:18the Lord said to me, behold, I have put my words
- 20:22in your mouth. Anyone who says they received
- 20:27a vision or a prophecy from the Lord needs to
- 20:32be very careful what they are about to say. Because
- 20:38here, God put his words in Jeremiah's mouth,
- 20:43and Jeremiah only spoke exactly what God said
- 20:47he should speak. And that's important. Would
- 20:51we not agree? So, see, I have set you this day
- 21:01over nations and over kingdoms to pluck up and
- 21:04to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to
- 21:08build and to plant. Why is he saying that? I've
- 21:12put my word in your mouth so that when I send
- 21:16you over the nations and over the kingdoms, you
- 21:18can pluck up and break down, destroy and overthrow.
- 21:22It's because the word of God, purpose of the
- 21:26word of God is to reveal to you the condition
- 21:28of your heart. It's to show you that there is
- 21:33a holy, righteous God that you have to answer
- 21:37to. And if anything, it should break me to the
- 21:40point and pluck me to the point that I turn to
- 21:44God in repentance away from my sin. That it should
- 21:51be destroyed and overthrown. When the word of
- 21:55God comes, the word of God comes to build and
- 21:58to plant. So though I'm using an individual description
- 22:03here, the reality is it's the same for every
- 22:05nation and kingdom. And what you see in our world
- 22:09today is the turning away, the nations turning
- 22:13away from the king of all kings, thinking they
- 22:18can rule and govern themselves. So much to the
- 22:23point that they've turned away from sound biblical
- 22:26truth to fallacies and mythology and false philosophy.
- 22:40And I think as a church, just in general, the
- 22:43church in America has to come to the realization
- 22:45that we are living in a post -Christian society.
- 22:52And the only stem, again, of this onslaught is
- 22:57the church. And the only thing the church can
- 23:01do is to preach the entirety of the truth. Because
- 23:07by that, people will turn and repent. And by
- 23:11that, we can build and plant. And Jesus even
- 23:15uses the example of planting. The farmer who
- 23:19sows the seed. He sows the word of God called
- 23:23the gospel. So, fifth principle. God watches
- 23:35over his word to accomplish and succeed in which
- 23:39he sent it. Look what it says in 49 to 50. For
- 23:43I have not spoken on my own authority, but the
- 23:48father who sent me. Has himself given me a commandment.
- 23:52What to say and what to speak. And I know that.
- 23:56His commandment is eternal life. Do you hear
- 24:01that? Remember I talked last week about the gospel.
- 24:05And that the reality of the gospel. Is a command.
- 24:10To salvation. And you can't obey a command. Unless
- 24:16the spirit of God is present there. It requires
- 24:19God for us to be obedient. But here, and I know
- 24:26that his commandment is eternal life. Have we
- 24:30ever heard, talked about the reality of the commandment
- 24:34of the gospel? Not just to go and preach it,
- 24:37but to come. God commands, he calls, and he wants
- 24:43you here. And what I say, therefore. Jesus says,
- 24:49I say as the Father has told me. And that's exactly
- 24:53what Jesus says in Mark chapter 1. Repent and
- 24:58believe the gospel. It's a command. It's an imperative.
- 25:01It's not an option. Especially for those who
- 25:07belong to him. And in Jeremiah 1, 11 through
- 25:1012, very similar. And the word of the Lord came
- 25:14to me, saying, Jeremiah. What do you see? And
- 25:19I said, I see an almond branch. Now that's a
- 25:22whole nother sermon. Not going there. We'd be
- 25:26here at least another 30 minutes. All right.
- 25:30Well, probably longer, but we're not going to,
- 25:32but it's not going to do the almond branch thing
- 25:34right now. Jody will tell you, we were sitting
- 25:38in the office because I go through sermon prep
- 25:40with her and I'm thinking through stuff. And
- 25:41she was like, well, the almond branch. And I'm
- 25:43like, oh, and if we go and look up the almond,
- 25:45it's a whole nother thing. Verse 12, then the
- 25:49Lord said to me, you have seen well. Here's the
- 25:52point. For I am watching over my word to perform
- 25:56it. This should terrify every preacher in the
- 25:59pulpit. That when you don't rightly handle the
- 26:04word of God, God is watching over his word. And
- 26:10he will make sure it accomplishes what he intends.
- 26:14But to us who handle the word, As preachers,
- 26:18we should tremble in awe and respect. And this
- 26:28is one of the things that really brings me trepidation
- 26:33for these men who claim to be preachers and prophets
- 26:38and pastors who don't take in the responsibility
- 26:43of it. There are several prophets, quote unquote
- 26:52prophets out there. Pastors and teachers. And
- 27:01so I want you to be careful when you watch on
- 27:04YouTube. Prophets who claim they're prophets.
- 27:13If they don't preach the word, if they don't
- 27:15teach the word, if they don't proclaim the word,
- 27:17run. They're not prophets. If it doesn't exactly
- 27:25match the word of God, run. Because they're not
- 27:29prophets. If a preacher preaches a message outside
- 27:33of the word, run. He's not a preacher. If a pastor
- 27:39shepherds his people outside of the word, run.
- 27:42He's not a shepherd. If a teacher teaches anything
- 27:47outside of the word, run. He's not a teacher.
- 27:53But the scripture says in the last days, many
- 27:56will turn and heap up teachers who tickle their
- 28:00ears. Because they don't want the truth. And
- 28:12the only way for you to know the truth is spend
- 28:16time in it. And if you're a believer in Christ.
- 28:23The very truth has set you free. So my challenge
- 28:28to you is to get into the word. Read it. Listen
- 28:36to it. Study it. Meditate on it. Memorize it.
- 28:42Whatever you need to do to get it. You need to
- 28:48eat the word. Father, I want to thank you so
- 28:54much for your faithfulness. We give you praise,
- 28:56honor, and glory. We thank you for your word.
- 28:58And we thank you that you've made it very clear
- 29:01that your word is to be proclaimed exactly as
- 29:07you intended it to be proclaimed. We give you
- 29:12praise, honor, and glory that what you have sent
- 29:16your word to do, it will... That you watch over
- 29:19your word to ensure that it is performed. We
- 29:24give you praise. Help us to hold fast to the
- 29:29word of God. Hold fast to the sound doctrine.
- 29:32To the teachings of the apostles. And to spend
- 29:38time listening to your beautiful words. We praise
- 29:44you and we thank you in Jesus' name. Amen. Please
- 29:48stand as I bless you.
