- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:03the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:06There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:11while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:14together to talk cards. Hey buddy, how are you doing on
- 0:20this fine afternoon? I guess it'll be playing in the
- 0:24morning, but we're recording it in the afternoon.
- 0:26How are you? Man, I'm good.
- 0:28It's, you know, Red Sox Opening Day.
- 0:30The game is on right now. They just took a 1, nothing
- 0:35lead. So I'm very excited.
- 0:36Damn it. Yeah, I'm.
- 0:38Sorry, did I say that out loud? You're.
- 0:41Giants, though. Giants, Yankees, what are you
- 0:45talking about? Giants fan too, aren't you?
- 0:47No, I growing up, so growing up in Northern California, the A's
- 0:55were good and A's fans just rubbed me the wrong way at the
- 1:00time. And so I was a Giants fan by
- 1:03default. I I really liked, you know, the
- 1:07Dave Jarecki thing, and I liked Will Clark.
- 1:12And so I was, yeah, I was rooting for the Giants.
- 1:15We had like partial season tickets as a kid for like 3
- 1:18years with my mom to the, to the Giants.
- 1:22So I rooted for the Giants. And then when the Giants were
- 1:25like winning World Series, when they were like the 6th best team
- 1:28in baseball and they'd like win a World Series.
- 1:30I know Rick's vintage oddball cards just threw his phone
- 1:33across the room, but I'm, I just kind of was just like, these
- 1:38people are annoying. They are so acting like they've
- 1:41been into this for 20 years and they've been.
- 1:44I was going to games and there was 5000 people in this day in
- 1:48Candlestick Park, but so I just hijacked that, but yeah.
- 1:53That's OK. So you're Yankees lot of lot of
- 1:59talk on Sports Center this morning.
- 2:01Aaron Judge, O44 Strikeouts. Sell, sell.
- 2:07Sell to me, I will take your judge.
- 2:09Rookie cards at 50% I judge is fine.
- 2:15Judge one game means that just like when a guy hits four home
- 2:18runs on opening day, it means nothing.
- 2:24I remember I was a kid, it was probably about 198988 and I
- 2:29think it was George Bell hit two or three home runs on opening
- 2:34day. And I was like, oh, and then he
- 2:36had like this thing where like on a couple of his cards it his,
- 2:40it was George with AJ. And I remember seeing and I was
- 2:45like, wait a second, that's an error.
- 2:48And this is back when errors were all the rage.
- 2:50And I'm like, no, that's, that's not an error.
- 2:51You just that's how it was spelled in that.
- 2:53So you Googling to see what year it was that George Bell hit
- 2:57several home runs, multiple home runs.
- 2:59It was two or three on opening day.
- 3:00I think it was 3. No, I was.
- 3:02I was trying to remember if if Tuffy Rhodes had hit his three
- 3:06home runs on opening day or if it was like I remember it was in
- 3:08the first two games but it was opening day and how many home
- 3:13runs did. Although didn't Tuffy Rhodes hit
- 3:15like 700 home runs in Japan? I don't know.
- 3:21I have not. I'm not familiar with Tuffy
- 3:23Rhodes. April 4th, April 4th, 1988.
- 3:27I mean, I called the year and everything.
- 3:29George Bell hit three home runs on opening day.
- 3:32Look at me. I'm like a vault.
- 3:34Baby, that's impressive. Tuffy Rhodes hit 464 home runs
- 3:38in Japan. All time home run leader among
- 3:41four unborn players. Also hit three home runs.
- 3:47I think he was playing for the Cubs.
- 3:49Hit three home runs on Opening Day 1994.
- 3:54Wow. Was it the Cubs?
- 4:00Yeah, it was Cubs. I'm looking at his 1995 season
- 4:05stats in front of me and he batted .098 that year.
- 4:09Is that good? I I don't think that's good, but
- 4:14my guy had four strikeouts in his first four bats last night,
- 4:18so I don't know. OK, so we, we needed to get
- 4:22right after this. Matt from Providence and Jake
- 4:26Wax pack wisdom. First of all, they are fantastic
- 4:31contributors to the sports car clubhouse.
- 4:33We talked about this a week ago and but then Matt had some
- 4:39things to say about your comments and some stuff.
- 4:44What are your thoughts about the shots fired?
- 4:47From Matt, from Providence, Matt, I will admit Matt made a
- 4:53good case for himself being the number one dealer in New England
- 4:56and I had said last week that Matt from Providence is top
- 5:00three, which is very non committal.
- 5:03It's like top three and he was like, I should be #1 he's very
- 5:09clear. And he also, he guessed he, he
- 5:12and Jake guessed my other top 2. Actually one of them named
- 5:16somebody I'd never heard of before.
- 5:18But the other would be PB Collectors Paul Borges, who is
- 5:22awesome. And the other one is, oh, and
- 5:25they also guessed Don Hans. I will never have never bought a
- 5:29card from Don Hans because his cards are way out of my league.
- 5:34He he sells a lot of 191415 cracker Jack cards.
- 5:37Don hunts amazing display every time but they're way out of my
- 5:41league so I wouldn't put him as a top dealer.
- 5:45The other one is Ron from Don's sports card Center in Portland.
- 5:49ME and Matt made the point that you can't be called a dealer if
- 5:55you own a card shop, which I found interesting.
- 5:58With that loophole, Matt immediately becomes number one
- 6:02in New England because. Oh.
- 6:05Paul Borges and Ron both have their own card shops.
- 6:08So are we now at this moment declaring Matt from Providence
- 6:13the number one dealer in all of New England?
- 6:17Well here's the thing. I texted him.
- 6:20I said I'm enjoying the hit list.
- 6:22You and Paul Borges are my 2 favorites.
- 6:25Don's is there too, but they're a shop because there's this kind
- 6:28of this distinction between Paul and Don Sports Card Center
- 6:31because Paul does a lot more card shows and is much more of a
- 6:36show guy than a shop guy. And I said, but so is PB.
- 6:45And so I, you know, I was trying to compliment Matt.
- 6:48His response was just to heart the the my text.
- 6:52No, no, nothing else. He's pissed very it's like
- 6:57you're saying to my dad something and he just responds
- 7:00back with a thumbs up. You know, it's very passive
- 7:03aggressive. Well, I got to share something,
- 7:06but first I do want to say, you know, Matt is, you know,
- 7:11arguably and definitely it sounds like now the top dealer
- 7:17in New England. But if you were going to sell
- 7:19your collection and you weren't going to sell it to someone in
- 7:22New England, England, Mike, who would you sell it to?
- 7:26You know, I would go through Chris Sewell, baseball card
- 7:30collector, investor, dealer, in that order.
- 7:32Chris actually called me and he texted me yesterday and said,
- 7:35hey, how far from Augusta, ME are you?
- 7:38And I said I'm like 25 or 30 minutes away.
- 7:41And he said I might have a a little bit of a journey for you.
- 7:46He was. There's a guy in Augusta, ME,
- 7:48the capital of Maine. Many people think it's Portland,
- 7:51but it's not. Was selling Chris some cards And
- 7:55Chris wasn't sure he was comfortable mailing them.
- 7:58And so he he asked me if I would drive up to Augusta.
- 8:01And I was like, yeah, that sounds awesome.
- 8:04Go and meet a seller of cards to Chris and then ship them to
- 8:08Chris. And I was actually thinking, why
- 8:10don't I drive down to the, you know, Baltimore area?
- 8:13I think he lives near Baltimore and deliver them to Chris.
- 8:16How much fun would that be? But yes, Chris is trusted from
- 8:21Maine to Hawaii with collections.
- 8:23I don't know about Hawaii, but gives you a very transparent,
- 8:28amazing deal. Chris Sewell at his e-mail is
- 8:33sewellsportscards@gmail.com. I see he has updated his e-mail
- 8:37address on his website now. Yeah.
- 8:41He must be listening to surface issues.
- 8:43He. Is@gmail.com e-mail him if you
- 8:48want to sell part or all of your collection.
- 8:50He's the best. And I've been listening, in
- 8:55fact, one of the topics I had set for today potentially to
- 8:59talk about is I was listening to collector investor podcasts on
- 9:05the way home today. And but I don't want to talk
- 9:09about what they were talking about yet because if it becomes
- 9:12something that we end up getting into, I want to kind of save for
- 9:16that. But they they do a great job.
- 9:19Again, I had Jeremy the Texas Snowman on my channel the other
- 9:23day that we had a great discussion.
- 9:25It was last week, I think, super fun.
- 9:29The two of them are great. But yes, Chris Sewell.
- 9:33Chris Sewell is the guy that is everywhere if you want to sell
- 9:37your collection. Now I do want to point out also
- 9:41on the screen, in addition to in the partner section, we have
- 9:46Chris Sewell here and you could get to his website there.
- 9:49But there's a new section on the website that our our boy Adam of
- 9:54Splendid Sports put together, which is the contributors
- 9:57section. And the contributors section has
- 10:02contributors to the sports card clubhouse who aren't founding
- 10:06members but are important pieces of the team.
- 10:09Here we've got Dylan Double D vintage baseball cards and a
- 10:13link to his YouTube channel. We got Jake Wax pack Wisdom, a
- 10:18link to his Instagram and YouTube channel.
- 10:21We've got Matt from Providence and a link to his Instagram on
- 10:24there. Then down at the bottom we've
- 10:27got Southern collector Tony and a link to his Instagram and
- 10:31YouTube. And then we've got the Mike
- 10:34Petty Matt from Providence. Take note that you are higher on
- 10:39the page than Tony and Mike Petty, for whatever that's
- 10:45worth. I do want to ask you, why do you
- 10:47think Dylan is all alone at the top?
- 10:50What is your thought on that? Clearly Adam Bias.
- 10:53There is a clear East Coast Adam Bias here where he is putting
- 10:58his pal Double D Dylan at the top of the page.
- 11:02No, it's because Dylan has been doing this with Adam for six
- 11:07months. Four months, However long it's
- 11:09been, they've been doing. Turn back the clock here on at
- 11:12the clubhouse and he belongs at the top.
- 11:16Well, that might be that. He was the first contributor and
- 11:21so he's first there and then they have the next wave and then
- 11:24we have the next way. That's possible.
- 11:25I was thinking, see, in cheerleading, I hear that they
- 11:29have Flyers. A flyer is a cheerleader who
- 11:34gets thrown up into the air and they do their leg kicks and
- 11:37things and then they get caught and the Flyers are always the
- 11:41the smallest, the littlest ones. So when I saw this, I was like,
- 11:45well, of course he's the top of the pyramid.
- 11:52Well, well, I mean, come on, you could fit that guy in your
- 11:56pocket. We love him.
- 11:57We do. He had some really hot takes
- 11:59about autographs on their. Last episode, boy.
- 12:03And then DJ Tony hit back. Did you see that?
- 12:07I haven't. Oh boy.
- 12:10What happened? Dylan got eaten alive in the
- 12:13comments. Did he?
- 12:15I didn't see that. I can try to find it here real
- 12:19quick. But so so he talked about how
- 12:24you describe, as I'm looking for this, you describe what Dylan
- 12:27said in the episode and why he got eaten alive.
- 12:32He said the one that really stands out for me is that he,
- 12:37well, Dylan is very opinionated. And he says, well, he'll
- 12:43occasionally say in my opinion, but he says it's so loud, not
- 12:50loudly, but like openly. Like his opinion is fact, even
- 12:53though he's saying that's my opinion.
- 12:56And it's great for TV. It's, you know, it's great for
- 12:58YouTube because you want to hear people take big stances on
- 13:02things. But he was talking about
- 13:04autographs that he really strongly dislikes.
- 13:11Yeah. All right.
- 13:12This is the one I was going to say.
- 13:14Yes. So I'm going to play this clip.
- 13:18OK, it's it's only about a minute, but we can stop and hit
- 13:22pause if you want. But but check this out.
- 13:24This is what Dylan is saying. And then watch the response
- 13:28ready. Yeah, Nope.
- 13:30No sound. You can't hear it.
- 13:33No. That's a bummer, I can hear it.
- 13:38He says. Dylan says I would never take
- 13:44put a a a Sharpie autograph on a 1967 Venezuela retarado Sandy
- 13:50Koufax. It looks like garbage, he said.
- 13:54And TJ is online happens to have that very card autographed with
- 14:02A and it's beautiful. And I have to say, Dylan, you're
- 14:06wrong here, buddy, that this card with this autograph is
- 14:10stunning. Yeah, so.
- 14:13So Tony, TJ is online, showed the clip in a short on his
- 14:20channel. TJ is online and then he's got a
- 14:23video of the Sandy Koufax boy. Yeah, I mean, it was.
- 14:30It was, I mean, oh, I'm sure it's all in good fun.
- 14:34I think I don't know, but I, I hear what he's saying where I I
- 14:39understand where he's coming from about some people are just
- 14:42trying to do value adds and say, oh, here's his card.
- 14:46If I get it signed, you know, on this guy's, you know, deathbed,
- 14:51then it'll make the value go way up.
- 14:54And what Dylan I think is trying to say is some cards are
- 14:58gorgeous just the way they are. Like instead of trying to do a
- 15:02value add later in life. It it's one of the reasons why a
- 15:05lot of these guys say like the ballpoint pens on the cards they
- 15:09like more. It's because the ballpoint pens
- 15:12are most likely before it became a fad to get card signed 'cause
- 15:17they cause the the sharpies are easier to see and so it's more
- 15:22playing days before it became cool.
- 15:26Anyway, OK, enough of the drama. I do have a topic though, and I
- 15:31was thinking about making a whole video about this.
- 15:33So I'll give you I'll give you 2 choices.
- 15:38We could either talk about something with Beckett's GM, OK,
- 15:44the Beckett, the new Beckett GM, or we could talk about, let's
- 15:48talk about that. I'm going to talk about that.
- 15:51So if you are watching a lot of calm content, and again, I don't
- 15:59do a lot of reaction content, that's not my thing, but Jeff
- 16:04Wilson had this is I don't know what this is is this is the
- 16:08thumbnail. Maybe he did a video where he
- 16:12interviewed the new Beckett GM. OK, so Colin, Yep, Colin Hudson
- 16:20is his name. OK.
- 16:21He came from PSA. He's worked for PSA and they're
- 16:24they're acquisitions for a while.
- 16:26He is now the GM of Beckett. It's interesting that you knew
- 16:29his name. Now let me ask.
- 16:30Well, I don't want to get ahead of myself.
- 16:33Well. Colin.
- 16:34Colin is a young young man's name, right?
- 16:38Like my cousin is 35 years old and his name is Colin and it
- 16:43just feels like is he old enough to be the GM of Beckett?
- 16:46I haven't. Oh I've see.
- 16:47I've never seen the guy before. I didn't.
- 16:49I didn't even know this video existed.
- 16:52He looks a little what does he look like?
- 16:5340 ish maybe? Yeah, he's looks mid 40s forty
- 16:57to 45. Yeah.
- 16:59So OK, so I'm going to put together and give you a few
- 17:05pieces of the puzzle and then I'm going to give you my take
- 17:08away. So I was driving home, I think
- 17:10it was yesterday. And you know how when you're
- 17:13playing something and automatically feeds into the
- 17:15next video, and my video ended as I was driving, it
- 17:18automatically plays into this. And I was like, oh, you know,
- 17:21this is kind of interesting. I actually, to be totally honest
- 17:25with you, I like Jeff Wilson's The Jeff Wilson Show way more
- 17:29than his channel. He shares some thoughts.
- 17:31He does lots of interviews, and I find them interesting because
- 17:34I like hearing from industry people and because of who he is,
- 17:37you get to hear from some industry people that I don't
- 17:39have access to. And so he's interviewing this,
- 17:43this Colin Hudson guy. And I'm like, man, I've heard
- 17:46this guy before. This isn't the first time I've
- 17:49heard him. And then I remembered that Neo
- 17:52did an interview with him about a month ago, so right around the
- 17:59time he was named GM or after he'd kind of gotten his into
- 18:03his, you know, his position a little bit.
- 18:05Neo had him on and did a long interview with him.
- 18:09And then Jeff had an interview, even though in Jeff's
- 18:13description it does say that they had an exclusive interview
- 18:17with the guy who had already been interviewed by Neo.
- 18:20But that's another thing. And, and I was like, oh, this is
- 18:24interesting. You know, Mike's buddy Jeff is
- 18:27talking with the Beckett, the Beckett's GM Neo has talked to
- 18:32the Beckett GM. And and then last night I was
- 18:36on, I was on my walk and I was listening to off centered the
- 18:43guy, the the Dustin Flippin, Steve Neo and Ham, Michael Ham.
- 18:52They do their live stream like every other week or something.
- 18:56And they were talking about, at one point Neo had said something
- 18:59about SGC and what is their turn around time now?
- 19:02It's, it's gotten really long, right?
- 19:05And so I was listening as I was walking.
- 19:07So I pulled my phone out of my pocket and I, I put into the
- 19:09chat, yeah, I, I submitted on December 27th.
- 19:13My, my grades mailed back on March 10th or whatever it was.
- 19:20And, and they were like, yeah, they're, they're on life
- 19:22support. And then I thought to myself,
- 19:25wait a second, I've now seen two interviews with the Beckett GM2
- 19:31in the last month, and SGC went from 5 to 10 days to now they're
- 19:37what, 40 to 50 or whatever they're saying?
- 19:40Let me ask you this, Mike, who is the SGCGM?
- 19:44Because you knew the name of the Beckett GM, who is the GM of SGC
- 19:49right now. I would guess that there is not
- 19:52AGM for SGC. Just a wild guess.
- 19:56They it's like 3 graders, 1 customer support person.
- 20:01My guess is that there is not AGM because it's not a business
- 20:06that is big enough for AGM and that they do not care to grow in
- 20:10my opinion. And Beckett, clearly they want
- 20:14Beckett to grow and so they've assigned AGM to it.
- 20:20Do you know is there? Is there an answer to this?
- 20:23I don't know. I don't know if there's an
- 20:25answer, but what where it took my head as, as I was piercing
- 20:29this together between hearing them talk about STC and, and
- 20:33how, you know, all this stuff and is, they're clearly trying
- 20:38to position Beckett as a, a, a viable company.
- 20:44He was talking in the interview about a lot of things that
- 20:48they're doing, a lot of investments they're making right
- 20:50now into expanding the production and, and a lot of
- 20:55artistic changes to the flip and the logo and synchronizing
- 20:59things and, and getting more technology integrations like PSA
- 21:05has. Some of the ones that PSA has
- 21:07are going to expand over to Beckett.
- 21:08I haven't heard anything like that about SGC.
- 21:11And when Beckett was first purchased by collectors not that
- 21:15long ago, the immediate response everybody said was, and probably
- 21:19myself included is oh, well, they're going to kill them off
- 21:22now just like they killed off SGC.
- 21:25But that's not what's happening. What?
- 21:28What has happened? There's clearly a difference
- 21:31between what is happening with Beckett since they were
- 21:35purchased and what is happening with SGC.
- 21:37They are trying to wean us away from SGC by just slowly taking
- 21:43it from this powerhouse into nothing that you never hear
- 21:48about. It gets longer, it gets more
- 21:51expensive there. You don't ever hear about them.
- 21:54Whereas Beckett, they're putting like a face behind it.
- 21:57This is a well spoken guy. He's got the Beckett gear on.
- 22:02It's clearly a different situation, yes.
- 22:07Absolutely. And, you know, I think that
- 22:09Beckett just today or yesterday announced the closure of their
- 22:12magazine and comic book grading organization, which, wow, they,
- 22:20they still had that. I, I, I have graded 2
- 22:24autographed magazines, not the magazines themselves, just
- 22:27authenticated the autographs. But it's, you know, I think that
- 22:33they're, I would assume because that's probably not a very
- 22:37popular thing for them anymore, that they shut that down to move
- 22:41those people that move those resources towards trading card
- 22:45grading. Yeah, I mean, that makes sense.
- 22:48I mean, Trading Guard grading Plus it seems like they want, if
- 22:53you're going to be grading, if you're going to be grading
- 22:58magazines and programs and stuff, it it clearly seems like
- 23:02they're in comics. They're trying to feed all of
- 23:05that to the PSA label. Yeah.
- 23:08Yeah. Let me ask you this because, you
- 23:10know, you and I both collect video games.
- 23:11I have a few right here behind me and I was looking last night
- 23:18because they, the collectors purchased WADA a few years ago,
- 23:23which was a grading company and then CGC is sort of like been
- 23:27the powerhouse video game grader for a while and then WADA was
- 23:31kind of a competitor. PSA about WADA, they recently
- 23:35rebranded that about three months ago from WADA to PSA.
- 23:40And I was looking up some graded video games last night and there
- 23:43are a lot. Suddenly there are a lot of
- 23:46graded video games with PSA holders, and by PSA branding it
- 23:53feels like they want everything to be PSA.
- 23:57Except it seems like they're trying to actually reestablish
- 24:06Beckett grading for cards. Yes, I agree.
- 24:13And I, we talked about this back November, December.
- 24:18I still think that they're going to do a vintage SGC and then
- 24:23like a junk wax to 2000 tens Beckett type of thing and then
- 24:30ultra modern and you know, very close to ultra modern PSA type
- 24:35of split. Whether they say it or not,
- 24:39Beckett is well known for their 90s grades in the early 2000s.
- 24:45And so it'll be interesting to see when they when they really
- 24:48start coming out with whatever they're going to do with
- 24:50Beckett, where they land. It see, it seems interesting and
- 24:55I I think that I agree with a lot of that.
- 25:00I think PSA will you'll probably be able to get everything
- 25:04graded. PSA forever put the Beckett
- 25:08having sort of like its emphasis and SGC.
- 25:13It feels to me like I'm kind of surprised that they haven't set
- 25:18an era date deadline on like, you know, SGC is 1980 and before
- 25:26like like that. I mean, because when you when
- 25:29you're training people, if you have to train them to grade
- 25:32ultra modern, you have to train them to grade patch cards.
- 25:34You have to train them to do, you know, thicker cards and
- 25:38refractor cards and all this sort of stuff.
- 25:40If SGC is not really grading that anymore, why not just set
- 25:46the cap and just say we'll reholder?
- 25:48If a card's already in a holder, we'll reholder it, but we're no
- 25:52longer going to grade after 1980 since that's clearly what they
- 25:55want to do. It seems like that would at
- 25:58least increase efficiencies. I agree.
- 26:01Why haven't they done that yet? They're more focused on Beckett.
- 26:08I, I, I really don't know. I think that they're happy to
- 26:11just collect people's money and continue to they're, it's
- 26:14probably like, I don't know, 3% oh, what is happening.
- 26:21I you keep talking, I don't want to interrupt you.
- 26:23I keep interrupting you because I get excited.
- 26:25So go ahead. I'm.
- 26:25Guessing the percent of and I think you can get this through
- 26:29gem rate, the percent of cards that SGC is grading that's post
- 26:341980 is probably pretty darn low.
- 26:37And so it's it's a small problem for them.
- 26:41Yeah, yeah, I I think it is a small problem, but I would just
- 26:45say eliminate that from having to even deal with researching
- 26:49that anymore. But OK, so I, I told you when
- 26:53before we before we started recording that I had a topic
- 26:56idea for this episode and I, I knew I wouldn't forget it.
- 27:02So I didn't need to write it down.
- 27:04And then it was gone. Even though at the beginning of
- 27:07this episode I said that I was a vault because I remember that
- 27:10George Bell hit three home runs on opening day in 1988.
- 27:13But that happened 35 years ago, not 35 minutes ago.
- 27:16That's a good point. OK, So one of the things in this
- 27:20episode when Jeff is interviewing this call in guy is
- 27:25that they want to have window. They're talking, they're
- 27:28exploring the idea of having windows of you can submit right
- 27:34now your card for regular service grading.
- 27:37And then when they get backed up, they just, they just turn it
- 27:42off. You can't submit at this time.
- 27:44Like you, you can only submit when it's available.
- 27:48And when it's not available, they close it to get caught up
- 27:52so that they can start hitting regularly and routinely hitting
- 27:56their turn around times. Because what happens is they say
- 27:58it's going to be 30 days and then they get a million cards
- 28:02overnight because you know, the new tops Chrome basketball comes
- 28:05out and they're like, whoa, we can't do this in 30 days because
- 28:08we just got overflown. So he's saying one thing they're
- 28:11thinking about doing is having a window and and when you go to
- 28:15submit, it has to be available for submission at that time.
- 28:18And that that way they can turn the valve on and off based on
- 28:22their backup. So here was my thought.
- 28:26This is my question. I wanted to float to you hotels
- 28:32and airlines, they do fluid pricing.
- 28:37They have when it's a busy time. They raised up with there's not
- 28:42a lot of seats left on the plane.
- 28:44The price goes up, up, up, up. The closer you get to the flight
- 28:47and there's a bunch of empty seats.
- 28:49The price goes down, down, down at at the hotels when when they
- 28:53see, Oh my gosh, everybody's booking up because it's the
- 28:55Strongsville show and they start getting full.
- 28:57They raise the price. It's a fluid pricing structure
- 29:00and the way that they can increase and decrease the demand
- 29:06is by changing the price, right? My question is, would that work
- 29:13or should they consider doing that for card grading?
- 29:18If PSA is slammed and they just go fine, you can do it.
- 29:22But they just and and literally like every day, every minute I
- 29:26could be sitting there and the price change based on what's
- 29:30happening to the amount of submissions at that point in
- 29:33time. Is that a crazy idea or is that
- 29:37got some legs? Is that something they would
- 29:39consider? What do you think?
- 29:41I think it's brilliant. I think they should hire you and
- 29:44pay you $1,000,000 a year for this idea.
- 29:47The see, they already try to do this like this when they, when
- 29:52PSA raised their prices a month or two ago, they said, well, the
- 29:58demand's too high, so we need to raise our prices and but they
- 30:01wait so long, they wait until that turn around time.
- 30:05But you're right, they should have dynamic surge pricing like
- 30:09Uber has, where as they've as their backlog, not the, I guess
- 30:16it would be their backlog. So I've talked about this a
- 30:18little bit. PSA, should I assume they have
- 30:22an analytics, a data analytics group that builds dashboards
- 30:26that show the entire pipeline of carts.
- 30:30So how many are currently being graded, how many are in QA, how
- 30:36many are in identification, How many are sitting on the things
- 30:40Outback that have been delivered, How many have been
- 30:43submitted and haven't been received yet and they could use
- 30:47that data. This is what I do in my job to
- 30:51say, OK, we have our demand is really low, let's reduce prices
- 30:54down to $16 a card. OOP demand just skyrocketed.
- 30:58We're going to go up to $22.00 per card and then they could
- 31:01have that dynamic pricing. You've talked me into it.
- 31:04Let's do it. Let's go to PSA right now and
- 31:07tell them you do this. Yeah.
- 31:10And I want to say this right now that this is my idea.
- 31:15So if they steal this idea, it is clearly fact that they've
- 31:21stolen it. But yes, like when I Uber, So if
- 31:24I like five years ago, I stayed at Disneyland, like three blocks
- 31:28from Disneyland, right? And when we went to get an Uber
- 31:3220 minutes before the gates opened, it was like 20 bucks to
- 31:35go 3, three blocks. But at 1:00 PM that day it was
- 31:41like 5 bucks. Turn this have it.
- 31:46Like I should be able to go to PSA right now and see what the
- 31:49price is at this exact moment and it just constantly be
- 31:53changing. I love this idea I.
- 31:56Still will never. And I feel so good about that.
- 31:59I love that. I'm so excited that you like it.
- 32:04I feel, I, I feel, I feel so proud right now.
- 32:07I feel like I came home and I won the spelling bee and you're
- 32:12hanging up my certificate on the refrigerator and I'm just
- 32:16beating my chest. Here's the problem right?
- 32:19We now, because this is such a great idea, we now have to title
- 32:23this episode. Should PSA use dynamic surge
- 32:27pricing or something like that? And then people are going to get
- 32:29so mad that we didn't get there until we were 30 minutes in, but
- 32:33you didn't remember it until we were 28 minutes in, so.
- 32:36Or what we could do is we could say the future of PSA pricing or
- 32:41PSA is moving to dynamic pricing.
- 32:45Just kidding. Greg is throwing the idea out
- 32:49there. He is available.
- 32:50Although I do have to say before PSA sends me their offer, I do
- 32:55have to follow up on last week I had the interview for the new
- 32:59position. I was offered the position to
- 33:03now be a, I've been a high school 9th through 12th grade
- 33:09business, finance and computer technology teacher for the last
- 33:1620-3 years. And I accepted the offer to
- 33:21become a middle school history teacher.
- 33:25And I got to be, Yeah, I and I got to be honest with you, one
- 33:28of the things I'm most excited about is I've already looked at
- 33:32some of the curriculum as it comes up in one of the units is
- 33:35trading cards. It's political.
- 33:38I swear to you, it comes up, it's political trading cards and
- 33:42how that is used as a form of advertising during some
- 33:45presidential elections in the early 1900s.
- 33:48And I'm like, dude, I can bring in like some Teddy Roosevelt
- 33:52cards and some George Washington cards and some Abe Lincoln cards
- 33:56and be like, look, this is what they actually looked like.
- 33:59I was so pumped. That's awesome.
- 34:02Are you nervous? Yeah, well.
- 34:07I don't like change and I I'm very excited about.
- 34:13I have a couple of friends that work at the school.
- 34:16I'm excited to see them more often.
- 34:19I'm excited to to service a new, younger audience and try to be
- 34:28able to be sillier and use some of the skills I've acquired.
- 34:34But it's, it's like, it, it, it, it's like Tom Hanks after being
- 34:40in Philadelphia and then he's going to be Forrest Gump.
- 34:45And it's like you're you're playing a different role and
- 34:48it's kind of exciting to try to fill the needs to be successful
- 34:54at that. So my brain is actively already
- 34:59processing things I'm going to do.
- 35:02And that's good for me. It's given me some excitement.
- 35:04So I'm I'm excited. And meanwhile, you're just his
- 35:07character. From big.
- 35:11You know, probably so. Probably so.
- 35:14Well, it was three years in a row he had Forrest Gump,
- 35:17Philadelphia and Apollo. Were those the three years in a
- 35:20row where he was? He won twice.
- 35:23He was also Woody. From Toy Story right around that
- 35:25time too. And he was castaway.
- 35:28Right around that time, I mean, he was just and and not before,
- 35:32not long before that, he was really good in the wonders.
- 35:35Remember that one? That thing you do, that thing
- 35:38you do, the band was. Called the Wonders.
- 35:41He was really good in that. That guy's really good man.
- 35:44Yeah, his 90s. Was insane.
- 35:47Oh, I mean, you know. Joe versus the volcano, The
- 35:53burbs. I was kidding.
- 35:54About that one. But but Meg Ryan.
- 35:57Meg Ryan. Oh, yeah.
- 35:58Meg Ryan. I was a big Meg Ryan.
- 36:01You don't like Meg Ryan. I know.
- 36:05I know who your girl is. Who?
- 36:08It's Sydney Sweeney. Who?
- 36:13Who? Wouldn't I'm I'm not
- 36:16complaining. Back in those days, I.
- 36:19Was obsessed with Weird Science the TV show Oh do you remember?
- 36:24This. No the.
- 36:26The character. Lisa or I don't remember.
- 36:30Yeah, you're gonna have to look her up.
- 36:32Weird science. I love that show.
- 36:36I I really liked Chet the character in the TV show a lot
- 36:40more than I liked. I'm trying to think of who the
- 36:42guy was who played Chet in the movie.
- 36:45Somebody will he became much more famous.
- 36:48But anyway, in the in the TV show.
- 36:51Not the movie, The TV show. The the.
- 36:55The actress. Weird science, this girl.
- 37:00Yes. Yes.
- 37:02What's your name? You got to know her name, right?
- 37:06I don't she has a name. You know.
- 37:12Yeah, that was my. That was my.
- 37:14Favorite in the 90s? Really.
- 37:17That's good. That's good to know.
- 37:20This gal stars Vanessa Angel. That's that's right, yes.
- 37:27Oh, OK. Yeah.
- 37:33So dynamic pricing. Is the special sports card.
- 37:41Clubhouse surge. Pricing surge, not dynamic.
- 37:44Not OK, surge pricing, but this is our intellectual property.
- 37:51We have come up with this concept for specifically for
- 37:56grading companies. Yeah, we've just copyrighted.
- 37:59This. Yeah, I mean, I did it.
- 38:02Yeah. Yep, it's.
- 38:04I I just got off the the phone with my attorney and the
- 38:09paperwork has been filed. So I mean, if they want to hire
- 38:14us and utilize our intellectual property, you know, as long as
- 38:19you can out pay a middle school history teacher in Sacramento,
- 38:23CA, we're good dude. We are good.
- 38:28All right, Well, anything else? I, I mean, I didn't even get to
- 38:31my other topic. Should I tease it for next time
- 38:33or should I tease it? Tease it.
- 38:36So our buddies Chris and Jeremy over on Collector Investor
- 38:41Podcast, they were doing their question of the week debate,
- 38:46which was who are the top five players that they would invest
- 38:52in for like a 10 year stretch? OK, and I will say this, Jeremy
- 38:59went first and his first pick for who he would invest in for
- 39:04the next 10 years, player he would invest in for the next 10
- 39:07years was Michael Jordan. Chris had this, had his first
- 39:11pick and he went with Lionel Messi as his first pick.
- 39:16Then he went back to Jeremy and his second pick was Mickey
- 39:19Mantle and then it went back to Chris and Chris went with Barry
- 39:26Bonds. So let me ask you, let me ask
- 39:31you this through two rounds cause Theo's the judge.
- 39:35I haven't finished the episode. I'm going to finish it on my
- 39:37walk tonight. So I don't know how it turns
- 39:39out. But Theo is the judge.
- 39:41They joked about, well they should have picked you know, you
- 39:45know, Willie Stargell and and Roberto Clemente is your top 2
- 39:48picks 'cause then Theo would pick them as the winner through
- 39:522 rounds. Who do you side with through two
- 39:57rounds, Chris? Chris, for sure.
- 40:02The Barry Bonds 1 is really risky and I like it.
- 40:06I I don't know anything about soccer either.
- 40:08I'd probably go with Lamine Lamal, Yamin Lamine Yamal.
- 40:13Easy to say. Oh, did I just blow up my whole
- 40:16draft strategy? Now I have to go first because
- 40:18I've already given you my first pick.
- 40:21But yeah, I mean, I would go, I would go with Chris in this this
- 40:25case because it's more fun. I I mean.
- 40:32What Jeremy did is he said my first pick for an investment is
- 40:36gold. My second pick is silver.
- 40:38He, he went very, very conservative, but slow, steady
- 40:44growth. What Jeremy did or what Chris
- 40:47did is he kind of went a little outside the box and said, I want
- 40:51something that hasn't gone nuts yet, but I think is going to go
- 40:55nuts. And I think it's going to go
- 40:57nuts because of this and this. So two different strategies
- 41:02which show a lot about their personalities, quite frankly.
- 41:06Yeah, I'd love to see their. Portfolios.
- 41:08Yeah, Yeah, seriously. And that was what they basically
- 41:11were saying is they each got to pick five players for their
- 41:15portfolio. And they did also preface it
- 41:18with it. Does it have to be a player?
- 41:20Because Jeremy admitted that if it could be a person, 5 people
- 41:26instead of five players, that in his top five, he would have
- 41:30drafted Abraham Lincoln, which I thought was very interesting and
- 41:33I actually agree with. So I don't know how it plays
- 41:37out. I will find out.
- 41:38If you haven't watched it yet again, Collector investor
- 41:42podcast again, you know, obviously our our good friend
- 41:47Chris Sewell, sponsor of the channel and episode.
- 41:52We're always going to pick him as our who we agree with most,
- 41:56yes. All right, buddy, Anything else?
- 41:59Before we shove off, I think I think that's it.
- 42:03OK, this was fun this. Was a fun one.
- 42:05It's always fun, especially as the red.
- 42:07Sox take a three nothing lead in the length inning, yes.
- 42:11Is Jon Lester coming in now? Jon Lester.
- 42:17Man, I just got his rookie refractor Otto.
- 42:21Oh, congratulations. What'd you do after you spent
- 42:24those 12 dollars? That guy, the look he would give
- 42:30when he would turn, I was just like, you don't have to act and
- 42:33pitch, just pitch. Great, great pick off move.
- 42:37He and Andy Pettitte. Yeah.
- 42:39Pettit. Well, Pettit was.
- 42:40Really a Bock every single time. They just didn't call him.
- 42:43Didn't Lester get to a point though, where?
- 42:45He just wouldn't throw over. I'm trying to remember.
- 42:48I think he he got the yips. He had a little Chuck Knobloch
- 42:52thing. I think it was Lester who just
- 42:55stopped throwing over. And then like at one point he
- 42:57like rolled the ball. This is all towards the end of
- 43:00his Red Sox time. When I wasn't watching as much
- 43:02'cause I didn't have cable, so I'm.
- 43:05Somebody in comments? Will tell me how wrong I am
- 43:08because we know that our commenters love to tell us how
- 43:10wrong we are. I I do I do have to say 1.
- 43:13Quick little odd fact, so that you maybe remember hearing about
- 43:18the game where Chuck Knobloch had like 3 errors in like an
- 43:22inning. It was in a game or in an inning
- 43:24and one of the throws went into the stands.
- 43:27OK, Yep. Oh, man, I, I, I have, I have 8
- 43:33stories converging at once. I believe, believe it or not, I
- 43:38believe that the ball that went into the stands.
- 43:41I might be wrong here, but I'm, I think I'm right.
- 43:43I'm, I'm gonna, I'm gonna Fact Check this.
- 43:46The ball that went into the stands, I think it hit Keith
- 43:50Olbermann's mom. That sounds right.
- 43:53OK, by the way that. Game.
- 43:57I was at that game and, and the, the headline on the Backpage of
- 44:05the newspaper the next day when we were in New York.
- 44:08We're walking by a newsstand on the, on the street, you know, on
- 44:11the, on the sidewalk there. And it said yanked, 'cause they
- 44:15pulled, they pulled Knoblock in the middle of the inning, I
- 44:18believe it was. And the headline said yanked and
- 44:23it was just a picture of Knoblock.
- 44:25Marie Olbermann. That's you got hit, right?
- 44:30I'm telling. You.
- 44:31It's a vault, baby. Just don't ask me about what I
- 44:34was talking to somebody about an hour ago.
- 44:37But if it was 30 years ago, I got you, dude.
- 44:43All right, that's it. 44 minutes.
- 44:45My gosh, if everybody is checked out by now and they missed some
- 44:48good stuff, if they checked out early, they missed some good
- 44:50stuff. The second-half, the second-half
- 44:53was greater than the first half. Today it was we should.
- 44:57We should edit this and and move the second-half to the
- 44:59beginning. No, that's way too much work at
- 45:01this point. It is what it is.
- 45:04You get what you get, people. All right, off we go.
- 45:08See you in a week.
