- 0:40Back to a hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:43commentary podcast on. You know what I call you in
- 0:47episode 1, mister Peter. I think I was mr.
- 0:49Peter, yeah, I'm still here with mr.
- 0:50Peter. Hello, hello.
- 0:52I think we should be greeting us each other in Latin but I can't
- 0:55speak Latin and those the Latin teacher he says a wonderful
- 1:00liner because he's in a very Porsche University and he says
- 1:04my career is that I teach a dead language to Rich children, what
- 1:08you see is society No idea. Okay, so we've watched episode 1
- 1:13of the Romans. Yes.
- 1:15Now I'm going to put you in the disadvantageous position of
- 1:19catching everybody up with what's happened to this story to
- 1:21date. If you're curious look
- 1:23previously on Doctor Who. Yeah, so dr.
- 1:28Vickie and Barbara killing it, killing a novella doctor, and ve
- 1:33decided to go off to Rome. Doctor decides to pretend to be
- 1:41a dead old guy who plays the liar.
- 1:46And then in and Barbara are captured slaves.
- 1:52Enslaved both Resort someplace and often other players given is
- 1:57so relaxed. That's quite a lot to happen in
- 1:58a single episode, isn't it? It is.
- 2:00Yeah. And I think is what as well?
- 2:02I mean like, A lot packed in the first episode.
- 2:05It's still time for just character stuff and all of the
- 2:10stuff in the villa and sayings very rough.
- 2:13Yeah, we said very refreshing. Well, I got a question for you,
- 2:17but let's skip into episode 2 and I'm going to hit you with
- 2:19that. All right.
- 2:20We're not literally hit you. I'd be scared.
- 2:24So you ready to go? Yes I am in 5 4 3, 2 1.
- 2:31Obviously I'm not actually in control.
- 2:33Understand anybody listens this thing alongside watching it, but
- 2:36I've been doing this before and fifty episodes now.
- 2:38So just in case the person that does the sink in a little.
- 2:42Yeah, exactly. Now my question is, this is, do
- 2:45you think that comedy is an essential element of Y Doctor?
- 2:51Who is so successful? Hmm.
- 2:56I think it's a very beneficial element.
- 3:00I mean, it's quite telling that a lot of the most popular, I
- 3:03mean, Genesis, the Daleks is hardly sort of, as a joke in it
- 3:08caves of androzani to another one.
- 3:10A lot, the ones which are quite highly regarded aren't
- 3:15necessarily that funny. But I mean the whole concept of
- 3:17Doctor Who is obviously ridiculous, but I think it's
- 3:22that I was in the black archive buch about the Romans that was
- 3:26reading. It mentioned about how this is a
- 3:28bit of a release valve. That comedy was used as a have
- 3:34a, every few stories to be a bit of a funny one.
- 3:38And I think the do that a bit with like RTD does it quite a
- 3:41lot with the be a comedy episode and it's sort of rushing them
- 3:45out. So there's a, I mean, I don't
- 3:47Envision of Earth obviously very bleak.
- 3:50And and in the black archive, it sort of comes to the conclusion
- 3:58that it's settled in. Oh, in the second doctor area,
- 4:02instead of having right, the old comedy story, they would have
- 4:05the old comedy business from the regulars.
- 4:09Yeah. So you have a really Bleak
- 4:11story, but you have trout in and for as a Heinz there diffusers.
- 4:15And I think the And then you get that a lot, I think, especially
- 4:21with the pairings that are really popular with, with,
- 4:25tenant and tears. Yeah, are for sure.
- 4:27It could be a really big story, but Katherine tale says
- 4:31something a really good Mormon and then apply the huge, which
- 4:35is about slavery, but then she gets that Zinger of all the
- 4:39why'd you say Miss? Do I look single?
- 4:40Yeah, exactly. And I think that it's, that
- 4:44thing of diffusing and I think that you couldn't have any Every
- 4:48episode of every story like the caves of androzani or Genesis of
- 4:53the Daleks, because it would just get really earnestly.
- 4:57It would be Blake servant. Yeah, exactly.
- 5:00Yeah. And I think that Yeah, you need
- 5:04that. You need that humor whether it's
- 5:06sort of gallows humor that Nero offers with tigellinus and
- 5:11coming along later. And this this episode I can I
- 5:15can I just tell you something piece I did.
- 5:17I not tell you I was trained by the mountain molar of Montana to
- 5:23intrude. I'm surprised you haven't got
- 5:25that in the spin-off yet. Well, we might even a short film
- 5:28all over William Hartnell, having a fantastic brawl.
- 5:32Assassin. This was like a fluffy recess.
- 5:37I'm constantly outwitting the opposition.
- 5:40Oh yes, there's something along those lines and let the other
- 5:45literally say that my Excellency would be an impossible possible.
- 5:49Possibly is a big point out that cooks up that particular line
- 6:00later on because he decides to Embellish it by saying your
- 6:04Excellency, and then he gets his tongue tie, where's really spoon
- 6:08is probably written it to be seeable by Hot Oil.
- 6:11Yeah, that's even funnier. Oh look at this.
- 6:16Look at this little model of Rome so they've done to
- 6:19establish Rome Italy if that's like from another film or maybe
- 6:25like the galley, shh, Josh don't mind that sort of visual
- 6:28shorthand in the reign of terror.
- 6:31They just have like a steal of a guillotine.
- 6:35Don't let me go over to num. Surely have like a painting
- 6:39Paris or something as well, some of the muscle Go.
- 6:42I mean, I mean let's not escape from the fact that this was
- 6:47being made on a budget, you know, pretty cheaply having what
- 6:51they achieved visually given warmer.
- 6:54It's pretty extraordinary. There's a short letter on.
- 6:58I mean, I know that I'm conscious that we're probably
- 7:00gonna end up talking about these Mormons that I'm just
- 7:03remembering offhand Ron. But there's a shot where it's
- 7:06looking up at Barbara looking out of a window.
- 7:09And I'm just like that really works.
- 7:11Like it's just a camera like position, a bit downwards, but I
- 7:15think, I think it's right here actually in a second.
- 7:18Oh no. Maybe not.
- 7:18Think it might be with the torch bearers in episode 4 thing.
- 7:22I was really watch this more recently than you.
- 7:25Hi, I am. What's it for?
- 7:27By, that was a fit when I do on the documentary, one of the
- 7:31contributors was saying that because the I can't listen, I'm
- 7:35tavius. The, the bald guy, the one who
- 7:37takes in Barbara. Mmm.
- 7:38Yeah, the Christian one. Bit that he's a Christian and
- 7:41apparently at this point is unlikely, that there would have
- 7:45been a Christian in Nero's household.
- 7:49I don't know whether that's factually, true or not you or
- 7:51more of a history buff than I am sure.
- 7:54That's British history. Anything Italian basically, you
- 8:00know, I'm I'm so lacking in historical knowledge that I
- 8:05watch these dogs hose and just take everything as fact.
- 8:08So, luckily I think there's so many, I mean, this is I think
- 8:12what I like is well, is that it isn't always, I mean, celebrity
- 8:14and startles didn't really become a thing until the new
- 8:16series. Mmm.
- 8:18And there's lots of I mean maybe I mean obviously the mask of the
- 8:23Crusade Marco Polo, maybe that's more of a reflection of what
- 8:27kids are learning at the time. Yeah.
- 8:30I feel like they kind of they, they went for my history that
- 8:34kids would know about the reign of terror.
- 8:37The Romans the massacre of the thing, I feel like that was
- 8:43Niche even at the time. Yeah, they do.
- 8:45That comes across as very Niche. But there's some of the ones
- 8:49that I'm quite Pleased. I mean it took so long to have
- 8:52an official Rasputin story. Oh my God, Peter.
- 8:56Oh well it was extremely recently.
- 8:59Well, it wasn't really rested. It was an element of her, a
- 9:01bigger story, but then other ones like we never had media,
- 9:06which is probably the most widely taught thing.
- 9:08Yeah. There was a Rasputin BBC book.
- 9:14Yes. With Liz show, you sure.
- 9:17Yeah. It's actually a very good
- 9:18Rasputin story with With them. William.
- 9:21Russell, big finish and companion Chronicle, which was
- 9:25that it called The Wanderer. Something like, oh yeah, very
- 9:30snowy cover, that's another good one.
- 9:35I'll see ya where they pull these extras out from.
- 9:38Look at these people. You know what other vo.
- 9:42I mean this is obviously riffing off of if you ever seen them Ben
- 9:45Hur. No, I haven't like so been
- 9:47heard. There's a big like, like seen in
- 9:52a gallery ship where there's a shipwreck and he manages to its
- 9:56lift. This lift it from Ben Hur, V
- 10:00naught is obviously multi-billion.
- 10:02Pound historical epic in. This is like a corner of a ship
- 10:07or corner of the TV. Yeah.
- 10:09Yeah. When they go into a storm in a
- 10:11bit, someone is literally you can see someone is throw buckets
- 10:15of all are at them because you can kind of see it coming from
- 10:18One Direction, you know? I don't know, we think not only
- 10:21about the commentaries and the fact that when one of the actors
- 10:25or one of the commentators get something a bit wrong, They're
- 10:29only is fact that was a particular factor.
- 10:31I was watching the commentary and it's there the director.
- 10:35Sorry, I can't move the director.
- 10:36This story Crystal Barry. And William Russell are adamant
- 10:40that that seen the Shipwreck was on film because of the water,
- 10:46and which tie until we hear de cantel is like, really he's
- 10:52learned his lesson. I think from previous
- 10:53experience, the worst one is and nobody contradiction is Maureen
- 10:58O'Brien. Than the chase.
- 11:01When she's watching the chase, she says in the commentary, you
- 11:03know, the bit where they're on location in episode 1 and
- 11:07victory over the sand dunes. Hmm.
- 11:09Well, that's what Maureen O'Brien that remembers being
- 11:12there she goes. This is the only days filming.
- 11:15I remember Well, after meeting Maureen,
- 11:28O'Brien of the being really sweet.
- 11:30I wouldn't want to contradict Maureen O'Brien.
- 11:32Actually, when I, when I, when I did meet Maureen O'Brien, I got
- 11:35my picture of Maureen and quillian signed by Maureen.
- 11:41She sort of looked at the photo and she went oh it was that
- 11:44sweet creature. It was just me and him, a Lon on
- 11:47a planet. And they was my only friend in
- 11:50the whole world. No, I think.
- 11:53If I didn't, I didn't notice you say boss.
- 11:57Up with Sunday, the sun Beast. Oh, bless her.
- 12:01She obviously had forgotten that you may have watched series to
- 12:07relatively recently. I our they didn't behind the
- 12:09sofas for that, I assume. So, I think they're doing behind
- 12:13the surface for most of the see we speak now before it had been
- 12:17really before to be pleased. Well, and, you know, is is
- 12:20jelly-filled it, doing it, because she's scathing, whatever
- 12:23she's warm or I can't. I want a bit more positivity
- 12:28than Janet can offer and I get that I think I'm gonna stick
- 12:33that way as well. Yeah.
- 12:34I'm looking for of you changed. Have you changed your opinion
- 12:37now? Yeah.
- 12:39I just talked about Janet Fielding sort of dry humor but I
- 12:42couldn't. But that shouldn't they?
- 12:44When she was like, overly critical of everything else?
- 12:47Like, okay, well, why are you watching this then?
- 12:49You know, I think that her plus Peter Being quite critical.
- 12:56Mmm, I think it needs. No service.
- 13:00Something to go with Katie Manning.
- 13:02Okay, I'm running or I'm rooting.
- 13:05For the fuck that Bonnie's going to be on the, on the, on the
- 13:09behind. The sofa for this.
- 13:11I wish it is going to be on Beyond this officers to.
- 13:15She's I think there's a clip possibly on the trail of a
- 13:19reacting to the web planet. watch guy, but maybe a little,
- 13:26maybe Bonnie will be very Will regard the insect Movement by
- 13:46the doctor who she's all is just as Barbara comes out a few
- 13:52times, doesn't it? Yeah.
- 14:00But when she's been chased around, Nero's, Palace the
- 14:04doctors there, obviously. And he just, he just walks out
- 14:07of an Alcove after she's gone running down the front.
- 14:10So, sorry, I just remembered I've got on my desk here, I'm
- 14:13just waving up to my camera and the Donald cotton novelization
- 14:16of the Romans. Well, yeah.
- 14:18Which have you read it before long?
- 14:21It's letters there. Yes, it's very weird.
- 14:24And I've just written for, and in this particular soon, The
- 14:30doctor sees Barbara but he doesn't recognize what he thinks
- 14:34or Barbara wouldn't be here. I think it's possible.
- 14:37He looks, he sees the woman on the stage.
- 14:40Looks remarkably like Barbara but miss Wright.
- 14:43Wouldn't find yourself in this sort of situation or something
- 14:46like that. You have you seen that the
- 14:49Target Reading? Yes, the crazy cussler's,
- 14:53obviously. So I'm very intrigued to put to
- 14:55join the readers. So there's Louise Jameson.
- 14:59Hm. Who I am.
- 15:01I'm I guess if she's not Barbara she might be the the poisoner.
- 15:07Oh, after something. Yes.
- 15:09Right look, I'll stay yeah. Who also?
- 15:12I remember in the novelization so I think I read it a couple
- 15:14years ago and properly is the mother of the Assassin.
- 15:24That the poisoner woman is that in I think it is.
- 15:28I think that's basically like a conceit to be able to get a
- 15:31letter sent from one character to another Fair dues.
- 15:34Okay, I'm very, I really like, I mean, I get that at the time
- 15:38when the targets were coming out in the eighties, you couldn't
- 15:40watch the stories, so you would want it to be quite close to
- 15:44what was on the screen. But reading now the most
- 15:46rewarding ones, the ones that differ quite a lot.
- 15:50I agree with and actually, yeah, the ones, the ones that are just
- 15:52like the script. It's the few.
- 15:54He said she said, I mean, the Terrence ones are great and they
- 15:59were fantastic. They are like brilliant in terms
- 16:02of how they were in everything, but I think that reading it them
- 16:05in 2022 and which one rested in the experiment or what if we
- 16:12got, we've got the throne has, which is quite expect.
- 16:14The gunfights is as well fires and the mythmakers as brilliant,
- 16:18because the mythmakers, I think it's told by hormone.
- 16:22So it's really funny, isn't it? You is like I think he's going
- 16:26from Camp to come and sit and sort of accounting.
- 16:30What you seeing any in the Trojan can bend the Greek Town.
- 16:34I remember in that one actually to the Romans because I think at
- 16:39least at all I think it's called all through the one voice.
- 16:41I might be wrong, but I've got a strange early.
- 16:47I've got a strange early 90s sort of book with a silver
- 16:50cover, where it's the got half the gun fires and half.
- 16:53Laughs. Oh yes hair.
- 16:55They did quite a few of those. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:57Well the choose like two stories that complement each other.
- 17:00I think you've got like the robots of death and fear some
- 17:02evil or something like that. It's just like with the latest
- 17:06one that they brought out, you know, the Terrance dicks volume
- 17:081 and volume 2. And it's just about four novels
- 17:10that you've already got in a new set with a.
- 17:12Yeah, I was desperate to get out of that.
- 17:14My mother went to me. Now, you've already got those
- 17:17but really got them as separate the new hardback.
- 17:24Of toxin in the Daleks or dong Hoon an exciting adventure with
- 17:27the Daleks and The lavishly Illustrated, which has come off.
- 17:32But that I'm getting for Christmas another, I was reading
- 17:36about in Doctor Who magazine that they're going to do that
- 17:38with a few of the plan is, if that sells, well, the do it with
- 17:42a few more targets. Oh, I hope so.
- 17:44That would be imagined keys of marinus illustrative.
- 17:47Ah, he's just do the consecutive stories just to Awesome.
- 17:56It's actually something that edge of Destruction in terms of
- 17:58illustrations. You could really got a ton of
- 18:00town with with the because that that I think makes I think the
- 18:05edge of destruction of ization makes the whole and Tardis
- 18:08interior of Stew. Massive.
- 18:10And it's like kind of like Gothic he and steamed.
- 18:12Yeah, and I think that's a Nigel Robinson.
- 18:15One who I think it is. Novelizations flesh, things are
- 18:20just the right amount without veering to forward.
- 18:22Can you say like that's that's quite experimental compared to
- 18:25what you got on the screen and is more rich, but I think some
- 18:28of the latter days of mr. McCoy novels as well, that
- 18:31remembrance of the Daleks and curse of fenric, they're really
- 18:34strong as well. Although it's probably worth
- 18:36remembering that the the ones that are authentic to what's on
- 18:41screen for the ones for the stories that are missing.
- 18:45That's a really nice representation of what we're not
- 18:49going to see some of my probable snowmen. - well yeah yeah yeah.
- 18:55Well I think it's very interesting when you see how
- 18:58like the modern like twice Upon a Time was one and I've never
- 19:04heard that. It was any good.
- 19:05It's very I'm overthinking. I loved it.
- 19:08And that's a very Terrence Dixie type 1 but in a quite a causing
- 19:14we're in that it was like embellished in certain areas but
- 19:17it's basically what you get on the screen whereas The Day of
- 19:21the Doctor Water is the most Moffat thing you could possibly
- 19:25read. That's why I love.
- 19:26Or was it like the play age? See that are?
- 19:30Yes. It's very tall through various
- 19:35neural. Net has not been raised.
- 19:36You think in all this sort of thing I'm sure is like,
- 19:39devilishly clever. I bet it's really good.
- 19:43I went to. That's what if I told you I
- 19:46shall went to like, like, it seems that there's the turn
- 19:50sticks tribute at Riverside Studios.
- 19:52Oh yeah. Yeah, it was there speaking and
- 19:56I think he he spoke about the doctor did the doctor
- 19:59novelization. I was only that I could only be
- 20:01there for about two hours and I got to go with.
- 20:03It was a trance try and zoom off at mentioned about you brought
- 20:08Dave the doctor the novelization knowing right.
- 20:11This is my last time writing anything Doctor Who going to go
- 20:15completely to hell with that. Go completely off the rails,
- 20:19it's going to be absolutely batshit crazy and And I think he
- 20:23was quite happy with what you did, but I think it is, it's not
- 20:27very restrained. And I think that use like, right
- 20:30the last Doctor Who whatever their greatest hits.
- 20:34So I remember Rusty Davis and Stephen Mafia we got well off
- 20:39the Ralph of demons a, but who cares?
- 20:41This is interesting. They were interviewing each
- 20:44other and Rusty Davison. I live every day of the doctor
- 20:48and it was not the smartest cleverest and funnest
- 20:53Novelization I've ever read and I thought well, that done with
- 20:56rose. Are basically just written
- 20:57what's on the screen. And there's David Mafra it goes.
- 21:00Well I red rose and he went and I thought this is such a
- 21:03brilliant elaboration of what was on the screen.
- 21:06Why the hell have? I gone batshit crazy with David.
- 21:08Yeah, we both liked each other's approaches.
- 21:11I love the Russell T. Did I love the one of rules?
- 21:13And the fact that I think it gave Mickey a bit more mmm,
- 21:18Mickey's little group of friends and everything.
- 21:20And I love the fact that the London, I come spin off of its
- 21:25hinges and end up in the Thames. Yeah.
- 21:31What kind of rumors? I've completely lost and at the
- 21:35story only wonderful, Derek Francis, Has there ever been a
- 21:43horny, a character and Doctor Who the ribosome cup?
- 22:12I think she was in conville of monsters and Another three child
- 22:16or something, but imagine it would be a lot of fun, her in
- 22:22the Romans, imagine her. She chased having another
- 22:27adventure with that thing, Nero's, just walked off, and
- 22:29he's talking to River Song in the Next Room.
- 22:32Imagine flail about these things but with her chasing Nero
- 22:35because that's what happened, River Song, various.
- 22:41And I, when I said that box, it was coming out.
- 22:43I was like, oh, I ran out of ideas.
- 22:45If you listen to her, I know yet.
- 22:47So I'm gonna really like, especially the one with I quite
- 22:51like the, the web of fear one, but obviously the poor guy who
- 22:55thinks Pastor women who played Soldier.
- 22:58Yeah, doesn't sound an awful lot like you did when he was 30, is
- 23:0250 years later and that other thing, it's very convincing that
- 23:05it's offset in between but I love the, the idea of these
- 23:09little adventures in between in the middle of the revengers.
- 23:12You know, you said earlier about the celebrity Chuckles.
- 23:16This is the first one. Isn't it really having loon?
- 23:19I such a bully. Yeah, it's you've got well I
- 23:21suppose you got morkul Paul or oh sorry.
- 23:25Yeah, it's calling the popo Louis hate.
- 23:27This is a one were I think it's almost like right way making a
- 23:35celebrity. It's like that is what is really
- 23:39the way that he's with the doctors of Marco Polo's quite a
- 23:41bit. Like I watch this Savage.
- 23:45Doing taking my Caravan aware wants to get away.
- 23:47Doesn't he wear his here? Yeah here he's just like he's
- 23:51like Christopher Eccleston in that handsome cab with Charles
- 23:55Dickens. Oh and I'm quite then.
- 23:57Sing is quite a fun. It's like this is Just you just
- 24:01it's just reveling in the chance to be there.
- 24:03It's really hard or just said he's going.
- 24:07I can't imagine. They were talking to me.
- 24:08No it must be a case of mistaken identity as well and then they
