- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. Ready for another small but useful adventure? Luna: Yes, I am! I've been practicing my colors and numbers, but I'm itching for something practical. Lucas: Perfect. Today, we're going to a shoe store. Because shoes are always practical. Luna: Oh, I love shoes! Okay, what's the first thing I'd say when I walk in? Lucas: You can say: 'Ik zoek schoenen.' That means 'I am looking for shoes.' Let's break it down: Ik zoek schoenen. Luna: Ik zoek schoenen. Lucas: Yes, that's it! 'Zoek' is the verb 'to look for.' Now imagine you find a pair you like. You want to ask if they have your size. Luna: Size. That's 'maat,' right? Like from the clothing store episode? Lucas: Exactly. 'Maat' is size. So you'd say: 'Heeft u dit in maat 41?' — 'Do you have this in size 41?' Repeat after me: Heeft u dit in maat 41? Luna: Heeft u dit in maat 41? Lucas: That's really good. Now let's say you try them on and they're too tight. You'd say: 'Deze zijn te klein.' — 'These are too small.' Let's try it: Deze zijn te klein. Luna: Deze zijn te klein. Lucas: Yes! 'Klein' means small. So if they're too small, you can ask: 'Heeft u een grotere maat?' — 'Do you have a bigger size?' Say it with me: Heeft u een grotere maat? Luna: Heeft u een grotere maat? Lucas: Perfect. 'Grotere' means 'bigger.' Let's do a quick scene. I'll be the shop assistant. Lucas: Goedemorgen, kan ik u helpen? Luna: Ja, ik zoek schoenen. Lucas: Mooi. Heeft u een bepaalde maat? Luna: Heeft u dit in maat 41? Lucas: Ja, hier is maat 41. Wilt u ze passen? Luna: Ja, graag. Oh... deze zijn te klein. Lucas: Heeft u een grotere maat? Luna: Ja, natuurlijk. Hier is maat 42. Luna: Oh, die passen beter! Dank u wel. Lucas: See? You did it. You just had a whole conversation in Dutch. Luna: That felt so natural! I really like how 'te klein' and 'grotere maat' fit together. Lucas: It does. And you know, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, a couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going. Luna: Yeah, it's such a small thing that makes a real difference. If you can, buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo helps us keep making these episodes ad-free. Lucas: Absolutely. No pressure, but it really helps. Anyway, back to shoes. Let's practice the full set one more time. Lucas: Ik zoek schoenen. Luna: Ik zoek schoenen. Lucas: Heeft u dit in maat 41? Luna: Heeft u dit in maat 41? Lucas: Deze zijn te klein. Luna: Deze zijn te klein. Lucas: Heeft u een grotere maat? Luna: Heeft u een grotere maat? Lucas: Excellent. Now, how would you say 'These are too big'? Luna: Oh, um... 'Deze zijn te groot'? Lucas: Yes! 'Groot' means big. So 'te groot' is 'too big.' Good thinking. Luna: That's handy. So if they're too big, I'd ask for a 'kleinere maat'? Lucas: Exactly. 'Kleinere maat' — smaller size. You're catching on. Luna: I think I could actually go shoe shopping in Dutch now! Lucas: You absolutely could. And even if you make a mistake, people will appreciate the effort. Luna: I'm going to practice these phrases at home. Maybe I'll even buy new shoes just to try it out. Lucas: That's the spirit. Remember: Ik zoek schoenen. Heeft u dit in maat 41? Deze zijn te klein. Heeft u een grotere maat? Luna: I've got it. Thanks, Lucas. And thanks to our listeners too. See you next time! Lucas: Tot ziens! Practice these phrases, and we'll be back with another tiny topic soon.
