- 0:00I didn't come in with a lot of history of owing anybody.
- 0:03No one supported me when I was running for office.
- 0:06New York Mayor Mamdani has floated the idea of freezing the
- 0:09rents. Do you think that policy can
- 0:11actually work in a city and have you considered that in San?
- 0:13Francisco, San Francisco, it lost 8% of its population in
- 0:17just a few years. Elon Musk called it a failed
- 0:20city. Now a first time politician with
- 0:22no experience is betting he can turn it around.
- 0:25In this episode of What's Up Tim, I sit down with Mayor
- 0:28Daniel Laurie. Some say that AI is saving San
- 0:32Francisco. I mean, the industry is booming
- 0:34right now. Companies are moving in, but at
- 0:36the same time, AI is somewhat threatening to wipe out Massive.
- 0:40Jobs too. I want to know, as mayor of San
- 0:43Francisco, does that concern you?
- 0:44I have concerns about job losses coming.
- 0:48Public safety crime was down 30% in San Francisco last year.
- 0:57Mayor Daniel Laurie, thank you so much for sitting down with me
- 0:59today in front of the One Ferry Building in San Francisco.
- 1:03I mean, this is one of our iconic spots.
- 1:06It's an 80°, almost 80° day here in San Francisco, the most
- 1:10beautiful city in the world. It's good to be with you.
- 1:13So I've been coming to San Francisco since 2020, reporting
- 1:17on it on YouTube. It was kind of a ghost town in
- 1:202020. You look around now, five years
- 1:23later, six years later almost, it's completely different.
- 1:27The first question I want to ask you, you know, the big narrative
- 1:29right now is AI has saved San Francisco.
- 1:32Is that true? Do you do you agree with that?
- 1:34Statement is San Francisco, save San Francisco every time.
- 1:37Our demise has been written through many different cycles.
- 1:42This is the most beautiful city in the world.
- 1:45It's the most innovative city in the world.
- 1:47Our restaurants are the envy of the world, our arts, our culture
- 1:51and absolutely AI is is is is front and center right now, but
- 1:56it'll be something else 10 or 15 years from now.
- 1:59We're leaning into being the innovative ecosystem, the best
- 2:03innovative ecosystem there is on the planet.
- 2:06And so we, we love that AI is here, but we also love that our
- 2:11wonderful restaurants, our arts and culture are also here.
- 2:14So it's it's a great time to be in San Francisco for sure.
- 2:17San Francisco has kind of a higher percentage of reliance,
- 2:20or at least historically, on the office workers, right?
- 2:23That's one of the reasons I think the pandemic heard it more
- 2:25than say, New York. What are you doing to bring back
- 2:29office workers, Not just companies, but actually get back
- 2:31to the office? I believe it's my job as mayor
- 2:35to create the conditions so that people want to be downtown, that
- 2:38they want to be out and about. Safety is number one.
- 2:43Public safety. Crime was down 30% in San
- 2:46Francisco last year. Our tent count is the lowest
- 2:50it's been on since we started tracking it.
- 2:56I mean, just look around. The vibrancy is back.
- 2:58The hope, the optimism is back here in San Francisco.
- 3:02So we're creating the conditions of people want to be.
- 3:05We have these things called entertainment zones.
- 3:07First Thursdays we have on 2nd St. 20,000 people coming down.
- 3:13There's food trucks, there's live music.
- 3:15And we're doing that all over San Francisco.
- 3:17But I also want to just push back on one thing that you
- 3:20brought up about just office workers.
- 3:22Our #1 industry has been for a very long time, tourism.
- 3:28It's not just tech and, and once again, we'll lean into tech, but
- 3:34look around. People want to come here from
- 3:36all over the world. So on that note of tourism, how
- 3:38do you change the perception? Because if you ask someone,
- 3:41especially internationally, if you say the word San Francisco.
- 3:44They still. You know, they, they kind of.
- 3:45I come on great podcasts and TikTok and, and, and talk to
- 3:50influencers like you and, and tell the real story of San
- 3:53Francisco. We had the lowest homicide rate
- 3:56here in San Francisco last year since 1954.
- 4:01We have some of the safe. I mean, we're one of the safest
- 4:04cities in this country. We have this engine of
- 4:09innovation that's happening here.
- 4:10Young people are having a great time in North Beach and in the
- 4:13Mission District. I mean, we are the envy of the
- 4:16world. And yes, we got punched for
- 4:18sure. And the reputation is, you know,
- 4:21it. We we deserved some of it for
- 4:24sure. And it's one of the reasons I
- 4:25ran for mayor. I was not happy in the direction
- 4:27of our city. I wanted to see change just like
- 4:30everybody else. But walk with me around the city
- 4:34and you'll see the changes. When when you took office you
- 4:36had such a big agenda, how did you prioritize what to to work
- 4:41on 1st? I I'm going to stay focused on
- 4:45three things. Public safety is my number one
- 4:47priority. We need to fully staff our
- 4:49Police Department. We had our first net increase in
- 4:52police hires last year. Since.
- 4:54Seven years and we still have more work to do.
- 4:57We we're still short hundreds of officers, but we're using tech,
- 5:02we're using drones as a first responder.
- 5:05We have this thing called Arctic, a real time
- 5:07investigation center. So if somebody commits a crime
- 5:09now, they're going to get caught and they're going to be
- 5:12prosecuted and. That's with cameras.
- 5:14Cameras we've, we have, we have drones as a first responder, we
- 5:18have the license plate readers. We're using cameras to slow
- 5:23people down on the road. So our, our roads are safer than
- 5:25they've been in a very long time for our pedestrians still have
- 5:28work to do there. But public safety is my number
- 5:31one priority. Second priority is the crisis
- 5:34of, of on our streets, drug crisis, homelessness and and
- 5:39getting people off the street who are using, who are living on
- 5:42the street and into recovery into treatment beds.
- 5:45So we stood up 600 treatment beds last year.
- 5:49And the third priority is how do we make this city and City Hall
- 5:53a partner to our small businesses?
- 5:55How do we make it easier to do business in San Francisco?
- 5:58And, and we have this thing called Permit SF.
- 6:01We're stripping away red tape. We're making it easier to start
- 6:04a small business. We're making it easier for you
- 6:07to park in your own driveway in San Francisco.
- 6:09We used to fine you for doing that.
- 6:11Now you can do it. And we're stripping away decades
- 6:15and decades of bureaucracy that have held us back.
- 6:18So those are my 3 priorities. They were when I took office.
- 6:21They are today. What are you doing about the
- 6:23affordability issues, the housing affordability crisis?
- 6:26You know, San Francisco rents didn't really come down the way
- 6:29a lot of people might have expected the past few years.
- 6:31They they did. They did come down and now
- 6:33they're shooting back up again. And and that's because everybody
- 6:37wants to be in San Francisco. And so that narrative is an old
- 6:41narrative. People are flocking back to San
- 6:43Francisco. And but what we're doing is we
- 6:47pass something called the family zoning plan.
- 6:50We are going to create more ability to get denser housing
- 6:53built along our commercial corridors and around transit
- 6:56hubs. We just launched a First in the
- 6:59Country initiative where if you were a family of four making
- 7:03$230,000 a year or less, childcare 0 to 5 is paid for for
- 7:10you free up to $36,000 a year. Families are going to be saving
- 7:14on early childhood care. No one else has ever done that.
- 7:17We just announced that a couple of months ago.
- 7:20And actually families of four making a $310,000 a year will
- 7:24get 50% off childcare and and some subsidies starting in the
- 7:29fall. So really trying to lean in to
- 7:31make this a more affordable place.
- 7:33We want families to raise their kids here and we want those kids
- 7:37to have a shot at staying in San Francisco, and that's where that
- 7:40family zoning plane cups in. New York Mayor Mum Donnie has
- 7:43floated the idea of freezing the rents.
- 7:45Do you think that policy can actually work in a city, and
- 7:47have you considered that in San Francisco?
- 7:50We have not considered that in San Francisco.
- 7:51So we'll, we'll see what what happens New York, but our, our
- 7:55focus is on creating more housing, building more housing.
- 7:59We are, we have a system of rent control already in San
- 8:03Francisco. We protected the existing rent
- 8:05control laws there, but we will not be expanding.
- 8:10Back to downtown, you mentioned downtown.
- 8:12I want to talk a little bit about Union Square.
- 8:13So this was really interesting to me when I came in 2020-2021.
- 8:17You know, you see Louis Vuitton, Apple, Macy's, Cheesecake
- 8:21Factory, but you don't feel safe.
- 8:23And again, this was five years ago.
- 8:24I've gone back and, and now it feels a lot better.
- 8:27But what are you doing about the retail?
- 8:30You know, the, the big Westfield Mall shut down two months ago.
- 8:33What do you anticipate what happened with that space and
- 8:36what are you doing about the the the retail spaces?
- 8:38It's a great question. So we just, it just was
- 8:40purchased and I go back to what my job is.
- 8:43And my job is not to dictate to the private sector what they
- 8:46should do. My job is to create the
- 8:48conditions so that retailers want to be back in Union Square.
- 8:51And guess what, They're coming back.
- 8:53AT&T just reopened a spot right at the Powell St. cable car turn
- 8:58around. The Real Real closed a couple of
- 9:02years ago, reopened in a space, the same space Apple is still
- 9:07there. We've talked to big retailers
- 9:10who want to come back to San Francisco.
- 9:12They want to be in Union Square. Zara is opening a 40,000 square
- 9:17foot flagship store right on Union Square.
- 9:20It's going to open later this year or early next.
- 9:22So we feel the momentum happening here in San Francisco.
- 9:26But my job, make sure it's safe, make sure the streets are clean,
- 9:29make sure we get people are struggling with addiction off
- 9:32the street and in to help and activate downtown.
- 9:36And we're doing that with those entertainments.
- 9:37What do you think it is about you because you know, you've
- 9:40only been in office a little over a year.
- 9:41What I mean, the, the numbers are, are quite impressive,
- 9:44right? To say crime is down 33% in the
- 9:47first year. I mean, what, what what's, what
- 9:49was your secret to this? I think I just want to get
- 9:53results. I'm not focused on anything
- 9:55beyond this job. I was born and raised in San
- 9:58Francisco. My two children were born on the
- 10:00same floor at the same hospital that I was born in.
- 10:04I I love first. Not only do I love San
- 10:07Francisco, I love this job, which is maybe there's something
- 10:11wrong with me, but, but, but I'm having such a good job, good,
- 10:15good time doing this job. And I think what's different is,
- 10:19is I didn't come in with a lot of history of owing anybody.
- 10:23No one supported me when I was running for office.
- 10:27You know, the institutional folks and all the relationships
- 10:30that I've been building have been built on how do we deliver
- 10:35for the people of San Francisco. That is my only goal, is how do
- 10:38we get the city back to its rightful place as being the
- 10:42greatest city in the world. And by the way, we're already
- 10:45getting back there and people are feeling it.
- 10:48Two years ago, 22% of San Franciscans thought we were
- 10:52heading in the right direction. Today, 2/3 of San Franciscans
- 10:56think we're heading in the right direction.
- 10:57So this is a city that is is on the rise.
- 11:01People are feeling hope and optimism for the first time in a
- 11:04very long time. And it's and it's an exciting
- 11:07time to be here. What is the?
- 11:08Reaction been with some of the CE OS from Silicon Valley that
- 11:11I'm sure you connect with and talk with.
- 11:14We've just started. All of these bells are
- 11:16beautiful, so I don't know if that's going to mess up your
- 11:19sound, but here's what I will say.
- 11:21We looked when I was running for office, I looked at what New
- 11:24York did with the Partnership for New York City in the 1970s
- 11:28when New York went through a really tough time.
- 11:30I really liked what they built. We started something similar
- 11:33called the Partnership for San Francisco about 3540 CE OS
- 11:37getting together quarterly, speaking with one voice.
- 11:40So we've started that. We also started something called
- 11:43the Downtown Development Corporation, which is helping to
- 11:46revitalize Union Square in downtown, modeled a little bit
- 11:49after what Lower Manhattan did after 911.
- 11:52So we've taken some good models that we've seen.
- 11:55We've brought not just business, but labor and the nonprofit
- 11:59community together to say, how do we work together?
- 12:01How do we lift up our city? How do we recruit new companies,
- 12:04how we recruit retailers and and how do we make this city
- 12:08affordable and lift everybody in and the business community's
- 12:12been all in? Yeah.
- 12:13What are you doing to actually get the tourist numbers back,
- 12:15especially heading into a big summer?
- 12:18They're, they're, they're, they're already coming back.
- 12:20February we had Super Bowl 60, we have World Cup coming.
- 12:25We had over Thanksgiving we had the largest 10 day period of
- 12:30travelers coming to and through SFO, our airport.
- 12:35February we had 1.3 million people over Super Bowl, the 10
- 12:39day Super Bowl period, the largest in a February ever.
- 12:43And by the way, we've had Super Bowl here before.
- 12:45So the numbers are starting to come back and and once again,
- 12:51it's about getting on great platforms like yours and saying,
- 12:56I mean, it's March and we're sitting outside by the water and
- 13:01you have a short sleeve shirt on.
- 13:02So come join us. Should a 25 year old move to San
- 13:06Francisco right now? Yes, And why?
- 13:10It's the greatest city in the world.
- 13:12We, we have it all. I'm going to say again, the best
- 13:16restaurants, the best arts and culture.
- 13:19Our neighborhoods are on fire. You go, you just have such a
- 13:22great time going out in our town where the innovative ecosystem
- 13:27capital of like it's all AI is happening here.
- 13:31We want this to be a broad based recovery.
- 13:33So come join us. It's not just about tech or not
- 13:36just about tourism, you know? I want to ask you a question
- 13:40about so you know, AI is obviously the industry is
- 13:43helping California is helping Silicon Valley is helping San
- 13:46Francisco. But there's on the on the flip
- 13:49side of that, there's some some concern that AI is about to
- 13:52take, take out massive amounts of white collar jobs.
- 13:55Some are saying we could hit unemployment rate of 10%, even
- 13:5820%. I want to know, as mayor of San
- 14:00Francisco, does that concern you, you know, looking down the
- 14:03road in the next few years and has universal basic income ever
- 14:07been on your mind? I know I, I've studied Ubi, but
- 14:12I have concerns about job losses coming for there's no question
- 14:16that we have to stay on top of it.
- 14:18I'm, I have a, a group that I consult with who are in the
- 14:22industry talking about, OK, how do we prepare if, if these
- 14:26losses, job losses do in fact come?
- 14:29But I'm also and optimist when it comes to human nature.
- 14:32I mean, we've gone through waves of innovation over the last
- 14:36hundred, 150 years in this country, whether you're talking
- 14:40about the printing press, you're talking about the automobile,
- 14:43you're talking about the World Wide Web.
- 14:46Like people would always talk about job losses and then new
- 14:48jobs come that you can't even dream of.
- 14:51So I really fundamentally am optimistic now.
- 14:54I think that there's going to be short term things that we have
- 14:56to be ready for and we have to look at all all options to make
- 15:02sure that we take care of working people, that we take
- 15:04care of working families and those that may be impacted by
- 15:08these job losses. For us selfishly in San
- 15:11Francisco, we're seeing more of these companies take office
- 15:15space and hiring people. So I do think as a nation, we
- 15:19need to really stay on top of this and look ahead for San
- 15:23Francisco. It's, it's a, it's a, it's a
- 15:25boon for us, but we absolutely as, as, as city government need
- 15:31to be aware of the potential job losses.
- 15:35Do you feel like, do you feel like you're competing sometimes
- 15:39with like the Menlo parks, the Palo Altos in terms of where HQ
- 15:42and office space should be? They're all in San Francisco
- 15:45now. If you had come here when you
- 15:47said 5-6 years ago, you'd say all those companies that you
- 15:50were talking about would be they'd have some spaces here and
- 15:55down there, they all realize they have to be in San
- 15:57Francisco. I mean, we got open AI, we got
- 16:00Anthropic, we got scale AI. And I want those companies here.
- 16:04I want them participating. And what I say to them is to all
- 16:09the CE OS, I say we want you here.
- 16:11We want you paying your, your taxes and I, I want your revenue
- 16:14here and I want you all being part of the community.
- 16:18Have your employees get onto the boards of our arts and culture
- 16:22institutions on the boards of, of, of, of, of nonprofits like
- 16:26invest in San Francisco. Don't just keep your employees,
- 16:29you know, working 996 like get them involved in, in our city
- 16:36and that that's the best way to participate.
- 16:38But I don't think there's any competition right now in the
- 16:41sense that everyone in terms of the AI companies and tech
- 16:44companies, they need to be in San Francisco.
- 16:46So you mentioned taxes. One of the biggest, you know,
- 16:49reasons for the exodus of many tech companies over the past 5-6
- 16:53years was the business environment.
- 16:56Do you think it's improved since the since then?
- 16:58Absolutely. I mean, you, we definitely have
- 17:01here in California a tax structure that is higher than
- 17:07than most other places. But, but I think you also get
- 17:10more now, the problem was, is that people and their employees
- 17:14weren't feeling safe coming down to work.
- 17:16They weren't seeing clean streets.
- 17:18They were, they were worried about that.
- 17:19So my job is to make sure we have safe and clean streets,
- 17:23make sure that everybody is getting a bang for their buck
- 17:27from, for their taxpayer dollars and, and for us to deliver well,
- 17:31like we need to deliver great public schools and great public
- 17:34transit. So we're working hard on that.
- 17:37And, and I think California and San Francisco is the greatest
- 17:42state and the greatest city in the world.
- 17:45We have our issues. We have to get better, but but
- 17:49every, every state has its challenge.
- 17:51Final question, what's something that keeps you up at night?
- 17:56I I want, I want us to be back at the top.
- 18:00I want us to be the greatest city in the world.
- 18:02And, and I also for me, it's always about keeping everyone
- 18:06safe, making sure that those that are coming to work each and
- 18:11every day, those that are, you know, working janitorial jobs in
- 18:15these big buildings right behind us, feel safe leaving their
- 18:18building at 2:00 AM and we're delivering on that.
- 18:21But I'm always, always thinking about how do I keep people safe?
- 18:24How do I keep those that are on our streets?
- 18:26How do we get them the help that they need?
- 18:28And then how do we invite the world back to San Francisco?
- 18:32And I'm glad you're here. I know you are LA based and and
- 18:36I love my friends in LA, but San Francisco's the greatest city in
- 18:41the world. Yeah, it's it's amazing, very
- 18:43inspiring. And I think the the numbers
- 18:44speak for themselves. So I want to thank you so much
- 18:46for your for your time today and wish you all the best.
- 18:48Appreciate it. Thank you so much.
