- 0:04Speaker 1: Well, they say, Silverstone writes its own script, and that's
- 0:07Speaker 1: exactly what the British Grand Prix delivered. Twelve different winners
- 0:11Speaker 1: in the last twelve from PRIs at Silverstone, and this
- 0:13Speaker 1: time it was Raoul Fernandez who stole the show on
- 0:16Speaker 1: Sunday and all the Prillier podium, a championship battle blown
- 0:20Speaker 1: wide open, and a weekend that left you Caddie scratching
- 0:23Speaker 1: their head with plenty of questions to answer.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Welcome back to Pit Talk.
- 0:27Speaker 1: This episode is brought to you by Shannon's Insurance. I'm
- 0:29Speaker 1: your host Rnita Vmullen. Joining me is Matt Clayton, the
- 0:33Speaker 1: man who somehow managed to blend Oprah and Moto GP
- 0:36Speaker 1: together in one weekend. Matt, I think that's going to
- 0:39Speaker 1: be the highlight for me as you just saying you
- 0:42Speaker 1: get a car and you get a win, and somehow
- 0:44Speaker 1: Oprah is all involved.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not quite sure where that one came to it.
- 0:47Speaker 4: And that's about as left field as some of my
- 0:49Speaker 4: left field wrighting gets. But the good part about it
- 0:52Speaker 4: was that I saw the opportunity for you get a win,
- 0:55Speaker 4: you get a win, everyone gets a win, and someone
- 0:57Speaker 4: else got a win because this is what Silverstone does.
- 1:00Speaker 4: And what was weird when I was writing that you
- 1:01Speaker 4: look through that list of eleven previous winners in eleven
- 1:04Speaker 4: years before this past weekend, and you start automatically ruling
- 1:07Speaker 4: people out. You're like, well, he can't win, he can't win,
- 1:10Speaker 4: and he can't win, so who the hell can win?
- 1:12Speaker 4: And the name that kept coming up is like, well,
- 1:14Speaker 4: he's on a really, really good bike, So possibly one
- 1:17Speaker 4: of the track house guys could be the person to
- 1:19Speaker 4: extend the streak, but maybe not the track house guy
- 1:22Speaker 4: we thought was going to extend the streak. But yeah,
- 1:24Speaker 4: just another plot twist for MotoGP in twenty twenty six.
- 1:27Speaker 4: With our ten or maybe nine rounds remaining, we'll get
- 1:30Speaker 4: to that, I'm sure in the next half an hour
- 1:31Speaker 4: or so. But yeah, I mean, you were on the ground.
- 1:34Speaker 4: Apart from the fact that the Silverstone grass looks very,
- 1:36Speaker 4: very sad right now because it's just been torched by
- 1:39Speaker 4: one of the hottest summers that anyone can ever remember
- 1:41Speaker 4: in that part of the world, it is an amazing
- 1:44Speaker 4: place to watch MotoGP bikes.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:49Speaker 1: You know, this track is so known for the fact
- 1:53Speaker 1: that the riders have to have so much confidence to
- 1:55Speaker 1: go into the corners, the changes of direction as well,
- 1:58Speaker 1: and then you've got the high speed straight. So really
- 2:00Speaker 1: it is a track that we can see those bikes unleash,
- 2:03Speaker 1: like you said, but we knew naturally coming into this
- 2:06Speaker 1: weekend it was going to suit one particular manufacturer and
- 2:10Speaker 1: that was a Brillier and that was the outcome that
- 2:12Speaker 1: we sought from the weekend.
- 2:13Speaker 2: But like you said, it wasn't Raoul who.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I was thinking going into this weekend was going to
- 2:17Speaker 1: be the one to win. I mentioned earlier in our
- 2:20Speaker 1: last part that we did with Michael Lamonado that I
- 2:23Speaker 1: honestly thought, I agree, it was going to be the
- 2:25Speaker 1: one to continue that momentum. And for me, the biggest
- 2:28Speaker 1: shock was him crashing out of the race and tucking
- 2:30Speaker 1: in the front, because it's a mistake. We haven't seen
- 2:32Speaker 1: from him this season at all.
- 2:34Speaker 4: No, No, he's just been completely lights out. He only
- 2:36Speaker 4: had one DNF before Sunday at Silverston the whole year,
- 2:40Speaker 4: and that was when the bike packed up at Kota,
- 2:42Speaker 4: so it wasn't even a He does crash more than
- 2:45Speaker 4: some people, obviously a lot less than other people like
- 2:47Speaker 4: Zero and mih But anyway, that's another story, but he's
- 2:50Speaker 4: not a guy who's prone to making mistakes. And you know,
- 2:53Speaker 4: I'm sure we'll get to this a little bit later on,
- 2:54Speaker 4: but it seemed that he and Martine, we saw what
- 2:58Speaker 4: happened at the start when need of their rear ride
- 3:01Speaker 4: devices launched unleashed into that first corner. They didn't really
- 3:05Speaker 4: get to detach in the first corner. So it felt
- 3:08Speaker 4: to me that they were both a little panicked at
- 3:11Speaker 4: that point because they've lost their opportunity to dictate how
- 3:13Speaker 4: the race was going, but maybe Agura more so, and
- 3:17Speaker 4: it never really felt like he was coming back through
- 3:19Speaker 4: like Martine seemed to be a lot more decisive getting
- 3:22Speaker 4: back to where he eventually finished. Agura, you do wonder,
- 3:25Speaker 4: like he's been so good this year that we sometimes
- 3:28Speaker 4: forget that it's only second Motor GP season because he
- 3:31Speaker 4: doesn't look like your standard second year rider. But you
- 3:34Speaker 4: do wonder at a situation like that at Silveston, that's
- 3:36Speaker 4: probably the first time something like that has happened, and
- 3:40Speaker 4: certainly the first time something like that has happened when
- 3:42Speaker 4: he's at a position on the front row to possibly
- 3:44Speaker 4: win the race, and that's when that relative lack of inexperience,
- 3:47Speaker 4: which is something we never talk about with him because
- 3:48Speaker 4: he's just so polished. Maybe that played a little bit
- 3:51Speaker 4: of a faculty because it felt like he was kind
- 3:53Speaker 4: of overreaching a little bit to try and get back
- 3:55Speaker 4: to the front. And it was a day where a
- 3:57Speaker 4: lot of guys were crashing him and I think there
- 3:59Speaker 4: were sevent d and f all crashes, which is highly unusual.
- 4:02Speaker 4: He might have just been overreaching a little bit, and
- 4:05Speaker 4: you know, longer term, maybe it's a good thing for him,
- 4:07Speaker 4: but you know, short term, he handed Jaiy Martin a bit,
- 4:11Speaker 4: a bit of a free kick for the weekend, and
- 4:13Speaker 4: to my mind, I mean I wrote this on Sunday
- 4:15Speaker 4: night after the race. Yes, Fernandez won the race. That's
- 4:17Speaker 4: all great, second Grand Prix win and all of that.
- 4:19Speaker 4: The biggest winner for me over the course of the
- 4:21Speaker 4: weekend was Jege Martin because he came into that summer
- 4:26Speaker 4: break almost saying I don't quite know how I'm leading
- 4:28Speaker 4: the World championship here because I feel like I'm nowhere
- 4:30Speaker 4: near the peak of my performance and it's more to
- 4:32Speaker 4: do with what other people aren't doing. This is the
- 4:35Speaker 4: sort of weekend where he won the sprint he did
- 4:38Speaker 4: as good as he possibly could in the Grand Prix
- 4:41Speaker 4: by recovering to second and on a weekend where the
- 4:43Speaker 4: Decadees were really struggling and the Aprillius had their own
- 4:46Speaker 4: issues some of the others, He's actually extended his championship
- 4:49Speaker 4: league by quite a lot. And you know, this becomes
- 4:52Speaker 4: a bats game at this point in that you know
- 4:54Speaker 4: you can't sort of defend a thirty one point lead
- 4:57Speaker 4: with ten rounds to go. But he's in a really
- 5:00Speaker 4: really good position to be able to sort of minimize
- 5:02Speaker 4: the damage at circuits where particularly Mark is going to
- 5:05Speaker 4: be super super strong. What aarragon next might be one
- 5:07Speaker 4: of those. Just a really good weekend for him, because
- 5:10Speaker 4: I think he had a few doubts. It's like, well,
- 5:12Speaker 4: I'm leading, but I know that I'm not quite my
- 5:14Speaker 4: normal self. Just a really great week for him and
- 5:17Speaker 4: probably the biggest winner of the whole weekend.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I think exactly.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And I think we could really see that from his
- 5:23Speaker 1: body language and what he was communicating both on and
- 5:26Speaker 1: off the bike. It seemed like even from the get
- 5:28Speaker 1: go from Friday, he just looked comfortable. I don't know
- 5:32Speaker 1: what happened in that summer break and if something changed
- 5:35Speaker 1: for him mentally, but even his quotes after it just
- 5:38Speaker 1: seems like there's that confidence has jumped up a level now.
- 5:41Speaker 1: And like you said, thirty one points to now Marco
- 5:44Speaker 1: bed Zeki, who has also jumped back up over Ayagura
- 5:48Speaker 1: Agora has jumped back down to third. I want to
- 5:51Speaker 1: touch on Marco and the emotion that we saw from
- 5:55Speaker 1: him this weekend, but I think it was a blend
- 5:58Speaker 1: of emotions.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I think it was ale of oh, I'm back.
- 6:01Speaker 1: After the injury and everything, but I also think it's
- 6:04Speaker 1: I don't know if I can win this championship anymore
- 6:07Speaker 1: in motion too.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a couple of bits in it. For me.
- 6:10Speaker 4: I think there was relief because these past four races,
- 6:14Speaker 4: like I mean, he had not scored a point in
- 6:16Speaker 4: a Grand Prix since he won ut Majello, which is
- 6:18Speaker 4: a crazy stat like he won four of the first
- 6:20Speaker 4: seven races, and particularly at the start of the season
- 6:22Speaker 4: on here, we were just saying, well, how much is
- 6:24Speaker 4: this guy going to win the championship pot He just
- 6:25Speaker 4: seems like just completely metronomic at this point, and then
- 6:29Speaker 4: you know, Hungary was the race after that, and he
- 6:30Speaker 4: got cleaned out at the first quart at a corner
- 6:32Speaker 4: by his own teammates, and things just spiral from there.
- 6:35Speaker 4: We had the incident with the marshal at Bruno, we
- 6:39Speaker 4: had the massive crash early at Asen, and then we
- 6:41Speaker 4: had Germany where he came off in qualifying and broke
- 6:43Speaker 4: his collar bone. So the reaction for mine. At Silveston,
- 6:46Speaker 4: he finished third in the sprint and.
- 6:47Speaker 3: The Grand Prix.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Part of it was relief because the longer that Grand
- 6:51Speaker 4: Prix Sunday drought went on, like he knew it, we
- 6:54Speaker 4: all knew it. It was something everyone was talking about. So
- 6:57Speaker 4: it was part relief and it was also part of
- 7:00Speaker 4: he knew he was going to have to really push
- 7:02Speaker 4: the pain barrier this weekend because he just had the
- 7:04Speaker 4: left collarbone done, had his knee operated on during the break.
- 7:07Speaker 4: The first race was always going to be the hardest
- 7:10Speaker 4: one back, and of all the tracks to come back
- 7:12Speaker 4: to when you're not one hundred percent fit, there is
- 7:15Speaker 4: no It's an unrelenting track, Silverstone like it finds you
- 7:18Speaker 4: out if you're not right. And he was immediately quick
- 7:22Speaker 4: on Friday and massively quick on Friday, but over one
- 7:25Speaker 4: lap that looked fine. Seeing him after the sprint after
- 7:28Speaker 4: ten laps, where he'd looked absolutely shattered afterwards and you know,
- 7:33Speaker 4: very emotional because he'd gone through what he'd gone through.
- 7:35Speaker 4: I just thought that that's hugely commendable that you've done that.
- 7:38Speaker 4: How the hell are you going to do a Grand
- 7:39Speaker 4: Prix tomorrow because you've got to do twice the distance
- 7:42Speaker 4: and so this is one of those weekends he had
- 7:45Speaker 4: to sort of almost commit to, Okay, this is going
- 7:49Speaker 4: to be super uncomfortable. I just have to get through this.
- 7:52Speaker 4: I've got another two weekends before Aragon, which I think
- 7:55Speaker 4: is really critical that we're not just on that every
- 7:57Speaker 4: other weekend cadence at the moment, which is huge for him.
- 8:00Speaker 4: But it was just a really brave performance by a
- 8:04Speaker 4: guy who was clearly underdone and it was just exhausting
- 8:08Speaker 4: to even be on the bike litt alone at a
- 8:10Speaker 4: high speed track like this. And yeah, it was a
- 8:12Speaker 4: track where it really had an advantage. Like you said,
- 8:14Speaker 4: but this might go down as one of those weekends
- 8:16Speaker 4: that when it's all said and done at the end
- 8:17Speaker 4: of the year, we'll be like, remember that weekend that
- 8:20Speaker 4: Bears just gritted his teeth and got through Silverstone Because
- 8:24Speaker 4: I tell you after Saturday, I just thought he's going
- 8:26Speaker 4: to get halfway through the Grand Prix and just pull
- 8:28Speaker 4: out because he's going to be in that much pain
- 8:31Speaker 4: and just that uncomfortable. And you saw you would have
- 8:33Speaker 4: seen this in the post race press conference afterwards. He
- 8:35Speaker 4: had his leathers like half open and the world's biggest
- 8:38Speaker 4: ice bag on his left shoulder, where everything was just
- 8:42Speaker 4: aching and throbbing, which was actually really funny because of
- 8:45Speaker 4: course they had the mic clipped into his leathers at
- 8:48Speaker 4: the top, so every time he moved, about four hundred
- 8:50Speaker 4: ice cubes moved with him, and so every ad that
- 8:53Speaker 4: he gave was with all this ice just sloshing around
- 8:55Speaker 4: in the background, which is actually quite funny. But he
- 8:57Speaker 4: would he would he would have slept very very well
- 9:00Speaker 4: on Sunday night.
- 9:01Speaker 3: I'll say that.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I'll tell you who wouldn't have slept very well Sunday night.
- 9:05Speaker 1: And you could read that directly off his body language.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Was Mark Marquez this weekend.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yep, Like you know with.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Mark, it's one of those things is he's known as
- 9:17Speaker 1: something we spoke about, he's known for being able to
- 9:19Speaker 1: ride the bike in a way that even when things
- 9:21Speaker 1: aren't working, for him, he can still manage. We did
- 9:25Speaker 1: not see that this weekend at all.
- 9:27Speaker 4: No, no, And it's funny, like it's a confluence of
- 9:30Speaker 4: a few things. He's still I mean, he's nowhere near
- 9:32Speaker 4: one hundred percent fit. He's the first to admit that.
- 9:34Speaker 4: What was striking for me it was a weekend when
- 9:36Speaker 4: Dukatti Ducatti just weren't very good at Silverstone, and Mark
- 9:41Speaker 4: has never been particularly good there. He's won there once
- 9:43Speaker 4: and that was in twenty fourteen where he just won everywhere.
- 9:45Speaker 3: So it's almost like a bit of an outlier.
- 9:47Speaker 4: He's not been very good there, and even on a
- 9:50Speaker 4: weekend when Ducatti's not great, to see him as the
- 9:53Speaker 4: third best to Caddie, Like, when do we ever say
- 9:55Speaker 4: that he's the third best to Caddie Now? I was
- 9:58Speaker 4: not surprised to see Alex Marquez do quite well at
- 10:00Speaker 4: Silverston because high speed, right handed tracks tend to be
- 10:04Speaker 4: tracks where he's really really good. For whatever reason, you
- 10:07Speaker 4: think how good he is at Catalougna. It's a similar
- 10:10Speaker 4: sort of thing. Not as fast as Silveston, but it's
- 10:12Speaker 4: a track with predominantly high speed corners.
- 10:14Speaker 3: It turns right.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Alex is really good at those sorts of circuits. Malaysia
- 10:18Speaker 4: is another one. He's really really good at similar characteristics,
- 10:20Speaker 4: so it's not really a Mark track, but to see
- 10:23Speaker 4: him battling the way he was battling, I mean, I
- 10:25Speaker 4: don't think Ducady is as far away from as Aprilia
- 10:28Speaker 4: as it looked on the Silverston weekend. I think of
- 10:31Speaker 4: all the tracks in the second half of the season,
- 10:32Speaker 4: Silverston was going to be the one that played most
- 10:35Speaker 4: to Aprilier's strengths and least to Doucadd's.
- 10:37Speaker 3: So I think they're going to be a lot closer.
- 10:40Speaker 4: We also know there's circuits coming up in the second
- 10:42Speaker 4: half of the season where if Mark doesn't win both races,
- 10:46Speaker 4: it'll be a surprise like Aragon coming up is a
- 10:48Speaker 4: classic one for that. Philip Island will be similar to that.
- 10:51Speaker 4: He's good at Valencia when he stays on. There's certain
- 10:54Speaker 4: tracks coming in the back end that will really really
- 10:56Speaker 4: suit him. What I reckon the margin does now is
- 11:01Speaker 4: like his sort of margin for error is a lot
- 11:05Speaker 4: less than it was now because we've got ten or
- 11:07Speaker 4: nine races to go, which I keep saying, We're going
- 11:09Speaker 4: to come back to it and remind me we have
- 11:10Speaker 4: to come back to this. But he's playing. He's coming
- 11:13Speaker 4: from a position of one not great weekend at a
- 11:17Speaker 4: track where he's supposed to be really good. Let's just
- 11:18Speaker 4: say he has a bit of a crap sprint in
- 11:20Speaker 4: Aragon or something, or something happens on the first lap
- 11:22Speaker 4: at Aragon and the Grand Prix, and he fights his
- 11:24Speaker 4: way back and finishes fifth or something. He really now
- 11:27Speaker 4: has to capitalize on these tracks that are his strong
- 11:30Speaker 4: suits because he's swimming uphill now, and you know the
- 11:33Speaker 4: clock is ticking. We're more than past the halfway mark.
- 11:36Speaker 4: I still have no doubt that of the guys that
- 11:38Speaker 4: are behind, he's the person I have the most trust
- 11:41Speaker 4: in that will come through.
- 11:41Speaker 3: At the end.
- 11:42Speaker 4: But it's not the times running out but the circuits
- 11:45Speaker 4: where he's going to have his big advantage. He can't
- 11:48Speaker 4: afford to sort of drop the ball on one of those.
- 11:50Speaker 4: And this strikes me as being one of those championships
- 11:52Speaker 4: that could really turn on one weekend that maybe he
- 11:55Speaker 4: doesn't dominate it as he's supposed to do. Now I'm
- 11:57Speaker 4: saying all of this. We went to Hungary, smashed everyone
- 12:00Speaker 4: at Hungry. We went to Saxon Ring. We know what
- 12:02Speaker 4: happens at saxon Ry. So there's already been two opportunities
- 12:05Speaker 4: this season where he was supposed to dominate and he
- 12:07Speaker 4: has So that's interesting. But that's easier to do when
- 12:10Speaker 4: you're not so far behind. It's a big gap now,
- 12:13Speaker 4: and yeah, there's time, but you don't want to waste
- 12:16Speaker 4: any of these weekends when you're good. But he was
- 12:18Speaker 4: just a bit of an afterthought at Silvestone, like you
- 12:20Speaker 4: just noticed him going backwards in the sprint and then
- 12:22Speaker 4: the Grand Prix it looked like he was just trying
- 12:24Speaker 4: to survive to the end. And it was really tellygo
- 12:27Speaker 4: I thought in the closing laps where Fabio Digian Antonio,
- 12:30Speaker 4: who is fantastic at qualifying and rubbish at first laps,
- 12:33Speaker 4: will give him praise and criticism of an equal measure.
- 12:36Speaker 4: It was no surprise at all that Digia came back
- 12:38Speaker 4: through on Mark at the end of the race, because
- 12:39Speaker 4: digit is very good at the end of the races
- 12:41Speaker 4: and Mark was just surviving at that point.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean we saw it.
- 12:45Speaker 1: We saw when the camera would pan back and you'd
- 12:47Speaker 1: see Mark, there were Digitia then in getting past and
- 12:49Speaker 1: then uh Peco on a st Pedro and you could
- 12:52Speaker 1: see Mark was I want to say, coasting the weird
- 12:58Speaker 1: in this sound. He wasn't relaxing, he wasn't cruising, he
- 13:00Speaker 1: was coasting. He was managing the bike in the situation
- 13:02Speaker 1: to just get it across the line and bank those
- 13:05Speaker 1: points to what he could. So yeah, he's forty points
- 13:08Speaker 1: behind Johe Martin fourth in the championship. One point behind
- 13:12Speaker 1: him though, is Fabio digit Antonio. And this is the
- 13:14Speaker 1: thing is like we're seeing not much consistency from Mark
- 13:18Speaker 1: the EBB and the flow. One thing I feel like
- 13:20Speaker 1: with Digia is he is there and thereabouts and he
- 13:23Speaker 1: has been all so far this season. And I think
- 13:27Speaker 1: we're seeing more of that consistency from Martin with more
- 13:29Speaker 1: wins a Gura, but the fact that Digi is still there.
- 13:31Speaker 1: His fifth is one point behind Mark, He's four points
- 13:34Speaker 1: behind Agura, who's in third. He's not out of this
- 13:37Speaker 1: fight either by any means no, And.
- 13:39Speaker 4: I feel with him like there's less variance with him,
- 13:42Speaker 4: like you kind of know what Digit is going to do.
- 13:45Speaker 4: And I think that's been the story of his season
- 13:47Speaker 4: in that his race weekends follow a very very similar
- 13:49Speaker 4: pattern that he's very quick on Friday he qualifies really
- 13:52Speaker 4: well on Saturday. He's not particularly good off the line,
- 13:56Speaker 4: and he's not super aggressive in first lap, so he
- 13:58Speaker 4: always ends up to me like he's two or three
- 14:00Speaker 4: places lower than he qualifies after the first lap of
- 14:03Speaker 4: a sprint or a Grand Prix. But other than of
- 14:06Speaker 4: the front running group, other than a Goura, I think
- 14:08Speaker 4: he's the best guy in the last five laps of
- 14:10Speaker 4: a race, and so that consistency with him. If he
- 14:14Speaker 4: wins the World Championship, it's a long shot, right, but
- 14:17Speaker 4: it would rely on a lot more of other people
- 14:20Speaker 4: making eres or mistakes or having poor weekends. Because it
- 14:23Speaker 4: feels like he's always there, and so I feel he's
- 14:26Speaker 4: going to beat himself less than some of the other
- 14:28Speaker 4: guys will. There are reasons that the other guys will
- 14:30Speaker 4: beat themselves. We saw Berzek he do it for four
- 14:31Speaker 4: straight weekends. Mark to me wrote on the weekend like
- 14:35Speaker 4: a guy who knows the consequences of another accident and
- 14:37Speaker 4: he does not want to fall off again and hurt himself.
- 14:39Speaker 3: So there was a bit of that in there.
- 14:41Speaker 4: But I've been super impressed with did year this year
- 14:43Speaker 4: because I just think he's he's been underrated now for
- 14:46Speaker 4: quite a while, he's just a very very good Grand
- 14:48Speaker 4: Prix rider. Now is he a world championship material? Well,
- 14:51Speaker 4: I mean the points tally tells you that he's in
- 14:53Speaker 4: the mix. He's not someone I would think about as
- 14:55Speaker 4: being a murdor GP world champion, but there's just less
- 14:57Speaker 4: variance with him. I trust him more than of the others.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Maybe we could say, and this could be one of
- 15:02Speaker 4: those championships that is won by who makes the least mistakes.
- 15:06Speaker 4: And if you had to put down who makes the
- 15:07Speaker 4: least mistakes, it's probably dig you a first and I
- 15:09Speaker 4: grew a second in one of those two orders because
- 15:12Speaker 4: there's more variance with the others.
- 15:14Speaker 2: No, I think.
- 15:15Speaker 1: You're exactly right, and I think you know, did you Yeah?
- 15:18Speaker 1: I don't see him being that top name on the
- 15:20Speaker 1: top set, But I mean for him to get second
- 15:22Speaker 1: or third in the championship is not something for people
- 15:25Speaker 1: to rule out. And the fact of you know, okay,
- 15:27Speaker 1: we know he's on the factory bike, but he's on
- 15:29Speaker 1: the VR forty six machine. It's not Gukti corse like
- 15:31Speaker 1: to have all that playing into effect and to be
- 15:34Speaker 1: the du Caddi behind Mark Marquees and points or the
- 15:37Speaker 1: Duketti beating Mark marquees.
- 15:39Speaker 2: And races I think is phenomenal.
- 15:41Speaker 1: But on the other hand, if we go to Mark's
- 15:44Speaker 1: future teammate, Pedro A Costa, a weekend of top five
- 15:48Speaker 1: and top six is for him.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I mean, what do you say about Pedro at the
- 15:53Speaker 2: moment rocking the mutton chops.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Oh, that's questionable, but I mean on track this weekend,
- 15:59Speaker 1: it's just this looks like he had this confidence, like
- 16:02Speaker 1: he felt like he could push and push the bike
- 16:04Speaker 1: in the way that he could ride it to get
- 16:07Speaker 1: closer to the front.
- 16:08Speaker 4: He's trying super hard with those mutton shops too. I
- 16:10Speaker 4: don't reckon he's probably had much of a crack at
- 16:12Speaker 4: them at the past. He's been growing those things over
- 16:14Speaker 4: a three weeks summer break and they were a bit
- 16:16Speaker 4: like they weren't the best.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Come on, Pedro, but.
- 16:19Speaker 4: You can't look. You can knock the facial hair. What
- 16:21Speaker 4: he does on that bike. It's funny and that you know,
- 16:24Speaker 4: this is effectively at a Prilier versus Dacaddi championship. And
- 16:27Speaker 4: then you look and you go, oh, there's Pedro Costa.
- 16:29Speaker 4: What's he doing here?
- 16:30Speaker 3: Sort of thing? But he does it so.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Regularly, and the quality of the guy, like we know
- 16:35Speaker 4: how feisty is right, we know that he will drag
- 16:38Speaker 4: a bike into a position that it probably shouldn't be in.
- 16:41Speaker 4: He also loves a fight during the race, and I
- 16:43Speaker 4: think that's one of the things I'm so looking forward
- 16:45Speaker 4: to next year is that he races a bit like
- 16:47Speaker 4: Mark to me, and so seeing the two of them
- 16:49Speaker 4: as teammates, if that decady is good, will be super
- 16:52Speaker 4: fun because it'll be really fierce. I mean the Thailand
- 16:55Speaker 4: at the Sprint at the start of the year. If
- 16:57Speaker 4: that's what it's going to be like where those two
- 16:58Speaker 4: are teammates, then absolute signed me up. But what a
- 17:02Speaker 4: cost is doing relative to what everyone else is doing
- 17:05Speaker 4: on a KTM right now is pretty astonishing. And I
- 17:08Speaker 4: think you know, you can find out a lot about
- 17:11Speaker 4: a rider when they're on a great bike, but I
- 17:12Speaker 4: think you find out more about a rider when they're
- 17:14Speaker 4: on a bike that's problematic, and that bike clearly is
- 17:17Speaker 4: he's leaving at the end of the year. We know
- 17:18Speaker 4: that it's still a bit of a travesty that he
- 17:21Speaker 4: hasn't won a grol brit because he's ctainly good enough
- 17:23Speaker 4: to and that'll get fixed next year, I'm sure. But
- 17:26Speaker 4: he's just the one guy each week where you just go, oh,
- 17:28Speaker 4: it's a brilliant versus Tocaddy and a Costa. It's almost
- 17:31Speaker 4: like he's his own brand right now. He's just dragging
- 17:33Speaker 4: that thing into places as no business being.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I think you made a point there. I'm going to
- 17:39Speaker 1: use it to segue for a second. He said, you
- 17:41Speaker 1: can see when riders are riding a bike that they
- 17:43Speaker 1: like him riding a bike that they don't like, you know, Yeah, Fabio.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Corderraro this weekend.
- 17:50Speaker 1: God, I think he's just there just trying to ride around,
- 17:54Speaker 1: just trying to finish a race and you know, take
- 17:57Speaker 1: his paycheck and get ready for next year.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I think he's so checked out.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Yeah, completely, He's one of those guys. And we've all
- 18:03Speaker 4: worked with people like this, you know, in your hands.
- 18:04Speaker 4: You'd notice it when you're leaving an employer and you've
- 18:06Speaker 4: got to serve out you know, a month or two
- 18:08Speaker 4: months or three months or whatever. I mean, we've all
- 18:10Speaker 4: done jobs like that where we just sort of sit there,
- 18:12Speaker 4: tick the box, the days of the calider to tick by,
- 18:14Speaker 4: then you wave goodbye it and you leave the problem
- 18:17Speaker 4: is with Fabios that everyone gets to watch him do
- 18:18Speaker 4: it every second Sunday for ten more weekends, and it's
- 18:22Speaker 4: a bit sad really. I mean, I am really looking
- 18:25Speaker 4: forward to seeing him on a bike and seeing him
- 18:29Speaker 4: motivated next year and push him because we saw what
- 18:32Speaker 4: he did last year where he was just putting that
- 18:34Speaker 4: thing on pole like God only knows how with the
- 18:36Speaker 4: sort of laps only he could produce. He's very checked
- 18:39Speaker 4: out now and it's not surprising and he could almost
- 18:41Speaker 4: excuse it quite frankly. I mean, the the Amaha V
- 18:43Speaker 4: four thing. They're just cast a drift in this class
- 18:45Speaker 4: of one at the back where no one.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Really wants to be.
- 18:48Speaker 4: And he has been there for a very long time.
- 18:51Speaker 4: He's been very very well paid to be there, let's
- 18:53Speaker 4: be honest. But in terms of the willingness to put
- 18:56Speaker 4: himself one hundred percent on the line now weekend by weekend,
- 18:59Speaker 4: that's not going to happen for the rest of the season.
- 19:02Speaker 4: There were a couple of races this year knew he
- 19:03Speaker 4: was going to get up for. He was always going
- 19:05Speaker 4: to get up for Lamon, for example. But this is
- 19:08Speaker 4: a guy who's just literally sitting in the corner he's
- 19:10Speaker 4: turning up at one minute to nine and he's leaving
- 19:12Speaker 4: at one minute past five, and he's just ticketing the
- 19:14Speaker 4: boxes and he's getting out of there at Valet's here,
- 19:16Speaker 4: And of all the people that are changing teams at
- 19:18Speaker 4: the end of the year, I reckon he will be
- 19:20Speaker 4: the happiest.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Oh no, exactly one hundred percent. I think we're seeing that.
- 19:25Speaker 1: And you know, coming into this weekend, I was on
- 19:27Speaker 1: social media, how our motorsport chat is going off at
- 19:30Speaker 1: the moment? Let me close that one. The leading up
- 19:34Speaker 1: to Silverstone, everybody was replaying the heartbreak of when Fabio
- 19:39Speaker 1: was leading that race and you know, had that technical problem.
- 19:43Speaker 1: And I often think for a writer, how does one
- 19:46Speaker 1: you know, take that info, push it to the back
- 19:48Speaker 1: of the brain or utilize it for motivation. I don't
- 19:51Speaker 1: think he did either this weekend, And you know what,
- 19:54Speaker 1: fair play to him at the moment. If that's if
- 19:56Speaker 1: that's the way that he wants to do it, then
- 19:58Speaker 1: that's finally he's focused on next year. But yeah, I
- 20:01Speaker 1: often think about going back to a track where you've
- 20:04Speaker 1: had such terrible memories, how do you overcome that? But
- 20:10Speaker 1: then I mean, if we were look at Yamaha from
- 20:12Speaker 1: the other side. Look at what Jack did on Friday
- 20:14Speaker 1: directing too. Q two was ninth qualified, eleventh, Like, he
- 20:18Speaker 1: is still pushing that bike from what we can see,
- 20:21Speaker 1: and trying to figure it out and ride it to
- 20:23Speaker 1: its capabilities and utilize its strength. And I mean, ultimately
- 20:27Speaker 1: he's still trying to figure out what he's doing for
- 20:29Speaker 1: the future. We've heard the talks about World Superbike and everything.
- 20:32Speaker 1: So he's still riding for a ride and has his
- 20:35Speaker 1: career on the line. It just might not be a
- 20:37Speaker 1: Moto GP.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:39Speaker 4: I mean, I've written a piece for the Fox Sports
- 20:41Speaker 4: website today that you may not have seen yet because
- 20:43Speaker 4: you've been a sleep computer and on the other side
- 20:44Speaker 4: of the world. But Jack in Friday practice, when he
- 20:48Speaker 4: got himself into Q two, that is the fastest lap
- 20:51Speaker 4: he has ever done on anything at Silverston in all
- 20:54Speaker 4: the years that he's been there. The fastest is the
- 20:57Speaker 4: fastest he's ever been on a Yamahavy for which admittedly
- 21:00Speaker 4: is not a very good motorcycle. It's the fastest he's
- 21:03Speaker 4: ever been at Silveston. So the fact that he got
- 21:05Speaker 4: into the top ten and then he came into his
- 21:08Speaker 4: Friday press debrief, looked at the time sheets and saw
- 21:11Speaker 4: that Marco Pizeki was one point two seconds faster in
- 21:15Speaker 4: first place on Friday, and he's like, you have got
- 21:18Speaker 4: to be kidding me, because Jack had sat there behind
- 21:20Speaker 4: the Marquez brothers had absolutely rung the neck of this thing.
- 21:24Speaker 4: It's the fastest he's ever been around Silveston on a
- 21:27Speaker 4: motor GP bike, which goes back to twenty fifteen, and
- 21:31Speaker 4: of all the bikes for it to be on that one,
- 21:33Speaker 4: you think he was on race winning decaddies back in
- 21:35Speaker 4: the day. He's never been faster around that track. And
- 21:37Speaker 4: then he gets to the end. It's like, oh my god,
- 21:39Speaker 4: I'm only eighthot what are we doing? But he is
- 21:41Speaker 4: extracting everything you could possibly extract out of it right now,
- 21:44Speaker 4: but the biggest problem at the moment, and you see
- 21:46Speaker 4: this in the races. It's great that he made Q
- 21:49Speaker 4: two's only Yamaha to get into Q two. Over the
- 21:51Speaker 4: course of the weekend, the longer the race, the more
- 21:54Speaker 4: they just sort of sink towards the back and you
- 21:55Speaker 4: see the signing tower and inevitably you'll have Jack and
- 22:00Speaker 4: together somewhere on the track. They'll be pretty close to
- 22:02Speaker 4: one another Alex Rins, which he wasn't upright because he
- 22:05Speaker 4: crashed out on that one is usually a few places
- 22:06Speaker 4: behind them, and then top rackers a few places behind them,
- 22:09Speaker 4: and they're in.
- 22:10Speaker 3: This sort of class of one at the back.
- 22:11Speaker 4: But it's interesting where Jack it feels to me that,
- 22:14Speaker 4: I mean, look, nothing is official yet, nothing's been announced
- 22:16Speaker 4: us at time of recording, but I mean, he knows,
- 22:18Speaker 4: we all know this, we all know the score here.
- 22:20Speaker 4: As he said, I'm not naive I know what's going
- 22:23Speaker 4: on here, but I feel that, you know, he's kept
- 22:26Speaker 4: saying this year that I feel like I'm writing better
- 22:28Speaker 4: than ever, and it's interesting for this story that I did,
- 22:30Speaker 4: which you will read. I'm sure I think we've been
- 22:33Speaker 4: at eight tracks this year that we had been to
- 22:37Speaker 4: in what was his best Motor GP year, which is
- 22:39Speaker 4: twenty twenty one, when he finished fourth on the Ducaddi
- 22:41Speaker 4: won two Grand Prix that year. He's pretty much faster
- 22:44Speaker 4: at every single track in qualifying, and he's raced fastest
- 22:46Speaker 4: laps than he was in twenty twenty one on a
- 22:49Speaker 4: championship contending to Caddy, And so the narrative that Jack
- 22:53Speaker 4: Miller is slow, and that's why he's not going to
- 22:55Speaker 4: be a motor GP anymore is not correct, because he is.
- 22:58Speaker 4: You know, the stopwatch will tell you he's quick than ever.
- 23:00Speaker 4: It does show you how far the game's moved on
- 23:03Speaker 4: and how far Yamaha is off the pace.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Right now.
- 23:06Speaker 4: He's doing better at some of these tracks than he
- 23:08Speaker 4: has ever done, but the game's moved on massively, and
- 23:11Speaker 4: so you know, he knows that the World Superbike paddocks
- 23:15Speaker 4: is likely. You know he's landing place for next year.
- 23:18Speaker 4: I think he's going to go there pretty motivated, and
- 23:20Speaker 4: I also think he's going to go there pretty confident,
- 23:22Speaker 4: because if it was a situation where his body was
- 23:24Speaker 4: broken and he wasn't quick, then maybe you'd have some doubts.
- 23:27Speaker 4: But you know, as he keeps saying, I'm riding better
- 23:29Speaker 4: than I ever have, and you know, maybe next season.
- 23:32Speaker 4: He's had an amazing run, clearly, but maybe next season
- 23:36Speaker 4: is a sort of motivation he needs, because it must
- 23:37Speaker 4: be pretty difficult turning up each weekend knowing that, you know,
- 23:40Speaker 4: if I pull the lap of my life out here,
- 23:42Speaker 4: I might manage to make you two. And that's as
- 23:44Speaker 4: good as it's.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Going to get.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I'm just looking while you're talking them. I was just
- 23:48Speaker 1: looking at the race times from Sunday's race.
- 23:51Speaker 2: So if you go back to.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Seventh Mark Marquez nine and a half seconds behind, then
- 23:58Speaker 1: we go to eight twenty two seconds behind. Jack finished
- 24:02Speaker 1: twelfth twenty nine seconds behind. Okay, so he's a seven
- 24:06Speaker 1: seconds ish behind Brad Bender in eighth, But from him
- 24:12Speaker 1: to Paul Spargo, who finished thirteenth behind Jack, is forty
- 24:18Speaker 1: one seconds. So if you look at those times, Jack
- 24:21Speaker 1: is pushing hard, like you said, and he's hanging in there.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I mean, if you look at the results, you go, oh, twelfth,
- 24:27Speaker 1: he only scored three points.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Blah blah blah blah blah.
- 24:30Speaker 1: But the fact that there was such a big gap
- 24:31Speaker 1: from him to poll from twelve to thirteenth shows you
- 24:34Speaker 1: what he is trying to do on that Yamaha machine.
- 24:37Speaker 4: It's a bit what I was saying about Acosta before,
- 24:39Speaker 4: and that you can only really judge the quality of
- 24:41Speaker 4: how good a Costa is by whoever else is riding
- 24:43Speaker 4: that bike at the moment, because he's on a different
- 24:45Speaker 4: planet to anyone that's riding a KTM right now. The
- 24:48Speaker 4: Yamahas are on Jallohas are on the same planet. It's
- 24:50Speaker 4: just like Pluto or something as a planet that they
- 24:52Speaker 4: wanted to be on us too far away from this
- 24:54Speaker 4: the center of the action, and so what Jack's doing
- 24:57Speaker 4: relative to everyone else on the Yamaha a bit of
- 25:00Speaker 4: a dtuned Fabio. Sure, Jack is the second Yamahara in
- 25:03Speaker 4: the standings right now in the World Championship, it's just
- 25:05Speaker 4: unfortunate that means he's nineteenth. So it does show you
- 25:08Speaker 4: where things are at the moment. That bike has such
- 25:11Speaker 4: a low ceiling right now. Neither Jack nor Fabio nor
- 25:14Speaker 4: Alex Rides will be riding it next season, which they're
- 25:16Speaker 4: probably not too devastated about. But it feels to me
- 25:19Speaker 4: that Jack's doing about the best he can with what
- 25:21Speaker 4: he has. It's just that right now that means that
- 25:23Speaker 4: you're on a really good weekend making Q two and
- 25:26Speaker 4: you might scratch yourself a few points at the back
- 25:28Speaker 4: end of just outside the top ten, and that's about
- 25:30Speaker 4: as good as it gets.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Well, the person who didn't score a point this weekend
- 25:35Speaker 1: was Fabio Coodorro. Considering there's sixteen riders to finish and
- 25:38Speaker 1: we had seven DNFs, including a home hero. First time
- 25:42Speaker 1: there was a brit on the Meto GP calendar and
- 25:44Speaker 1: who knows how long you know how long cal crushlow.
- 25:47Speaker 2: It was so devastating when the crowd heard him crash because.
- 25:52Speaker 5: The pictures here, the oh, I was like, I been
- 25:56Speaker 5: doing deflation, you know, I mean, it was really nice
- 26:00Speaker 5: to see the patriotsm of having a British writer at
- 26:03Speaker 5: the British Grand Prix.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Something we only really get to see normally was when
- 26:07Speaker 1: Jake Dixon was the Motto two and I guess Scot
- 26:09Speaker 1: Ogden and Eddie o'sha Emoto three we haven't had when
- 26:13Speaker 1: was Col last at the British Grand Prix mat.
- 26:16Speaker 4: I'm guessing he'd be like he did a few fill
- 26:18Speaker 4: in rides, didn't he when like Davicioso was injured and
- 26:21Speaker 4: what have you? So he might have said one in there,
- 26:22Speaker 4: But the last hobby was full time was what eight
- 26:24Speaker 4: years ago? It has been a fair while on. Col's
- 26:28Speaker 4: job description on the weekend was see the checkered flag,
- 26:31Speaker 4: and I didn't manage to do that at either race.
- 26:32Speaker 3: So yeah, no good, no good.
- 26:35Speaker 1: But like we said, it was Ralph Fernandez who won
- 26:39Speaker 1: on Sunday and Johe Martin now has that thirty one
- 26:43Speaker 1: point lead in the championship.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I mean, I'm really looking forward to next year.
- 26:48Speaker 1: But at the moment, but the way that the Motor
- 26:49Speaker 1: GP Championship is heating up and the fact that we've
- 26:52Speaker 1: still got these top I mean, you can almost class
- 26:55Speaker 1: Ralph Fernanders is in that fine now points if he
- 26:59Speaker 1: can take sis, I mean, okay, who's going to win,
- 27:02Speaker 1: but who could be second or third in the championship.
- 27:05Speaker 2: That's really exciting for me.
- 27:07Speaker 4: You know what, I'm getting vibes for here. I don't
- 27:09Speaker 4: think you've thought about this. I'm sort of getting a
- 27:11Speaker 4: little bit of early flashbacks of twenty twenty four going
- 27:14Speaker 4: on right now, when Jorge Martin won the championship for
- 27:17Speaker 4: Pramac dou Catti as they then were, and for most
- 27:20Speaker 4: of that season, I didn't feel like he was the
- 27:22Speaker 4: fastest rider. It felt like Peco Bagnaia was. And it
- 27:25Speaker 4: was a season where Bannai's repeated mistakes, particularly sprints, he
- 27:30Speaker 4: just kept crashing out and making mistakes. I wouldn't say that,
- 27:33Speaker 4: you know, Jorge Martin didn't sort of Stephen Bradbury's way
- 27:36Speaker 4: to the twenty twenty four World Championship, but he certainly
- 27:39Speaker 4: made fewer mistakes, and he just used that point scap
- 27:42Speaker 4: as almost like a bit of a cushion in that
- 27:44Speaker 4: he just you win when you can win, you bring
- 27:47Speaker 4: the bike home. If the best you can do is
- 27:49Speaker 4: you finish third, you finish third. It feels like he's
- 27:52Speaker 4: now in that sort of position to perhaps play twenty
- 27:55Speaker 4: twenty six a little bit like he played twenty twenty four.
- 27:58Speaker 4: To circle back to something you said probably fifteen minutes
- 28:00Speaker 4: ago that I wanted to just sort of alert our
- 28:02Speaker 4: readers to listeners to as well. Apparently he went back
- 28:06Speaker 4: to a bike setting from as far back as Lamont
- 28:08Speaker 4: in round five. I believe that was when he won
- 28:10Speaker 4: the sprint in the Grand Prix. You remember the race
- 28:13Speaker 4: after Lamon was Cattaloonna, where he spent most of the
- 28:15Speaker 4: weekend crashing and then shoving people in the pit box
- 28:17Speaker 4: and just being generally annoyed about life. They were making
- 28:20Speaker 4: a million and one changes to that bike to try
- 28:23Speaker 4: and get him on the same specification of bike that
- 28:26Speaker 4: Bezeki was on at that time, because Martine had missed
- 28:28Speaker 4: preseason testing and so he was.
- 28:30Speaker 3: On like a D tuned version, if you like, for
- 28:33Speaker 3: one of a better term.
- 28:34Speaker 4: They were trying to get him up on the same equipment,
- 28:36Speaker 4: and he's one of those riders and there are guys
- 28:38Speaker 4: like this. To Jane, Antonio is one like this too.
- 28:41Speaker 4: It's like, let me get the bike where I want
- 28:43Speaker 4: it and let me live with it from there. Even
- 28:46Speaker 4: if there is something that theoretically you could put on
- 28:48Speaker 4: the bike that maybe gives me more performance, I want
- 28:51Speaker 4: to be confident with what it is that I am
- 28:53Speaker 4: riding and I will just go from there. So my
- 28:56Speaker 4: understanding is that they went back to over the break
- 28:59Speaker 4: they talked about it went back to a very sort
- 29:01Speaker 4: of lamong Ish setting on that bike, and he doesn't
- 29:05Speaker 4: want a whole lot change because he's now starting to
- 29:07Speaker 4: feel comfortable and that to me, I might be adding
- 29:11Speaker 4: one on one together and getting six hundred. I don't know,
- 29:13Speaker 4: but you add those two things together. That's very much
- 29:16Speaker 4: the Jue Martin twenty twenty four playbook. Give me a
- 29:19Speaker 4: bike I can ride that I'm confident in that I
- 29:21Speaker 4: know where the strengths and limitations of this thing are,
- 29:24Speaker 4: and I'm just going to methodically chip away at this
- 29:26Speaker 4: World championship. It's a proven formula because he's won a
- 29:29Speaker 4: championship doing it before, and I do wonder now that, yeah,
- 29:32Speaker 4: he does have a points gap, so you can afford
- 29:34Speaker 4: to look at it like that. I wonder if that's
- 29:37Speaker 4: the way he plays it. And the other thing that
- 29:39Speaker 4: I mentioned probably seventeen minutes ago that we probably need
- 29:42Speaker 4: to discuss because we keep saying there's ten races to go,
- 29:45Speaker 4: it's seeming more and more likely that there might be nine.
- 29:48Speaker 4: Because I don't think we'll be going to Qatar, and
- 29:51Speaker 4: I don't think we'll be replacing Qatar. That's the difference here.
- 29:55Speaker 4: We joked on this podcast with Mikeel the other week
- 29:57Speaker 4: about the bar Rat Grand Prix in Malaysia because that
- 29:59Speaker 4: is what has happened good Formula one. But my understanding
- 30:02Speaker 4: is that Motor GP's broadcast contracts can be satisfied with
- 30:05Speaker 4: twenty one Grand Prix, not twenty two. So if Katar
- 30:08Speaker 4: gets canceled, which I think is more likely than not,
- 30:11Speaker 4: given that Formula one is not racing in that region
- 30:13Speaker 4: this year, the World Adjarance Championship is and Qatar will
- 30:16Speaker 4: probably not be replaced if it gets canceled, which if
- 30:19Speaker 4: your juge Martin, and all of a sudden, there's thirty
- 30:21Speaker 4: seven fewer points for your rivals to catch up. That
- 30:24Speaker 4: is the greatest news of all type.
- 30:27Speaker 2: So it's interesting you heard that.
- 30:28Speaker 1: I heard a rumor on the weekend that they are
- 30:31Speaker 1: looking at doing a Malaysia doubleheader.
- 30:34Speaker 3: Okay, that's interesting.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, So I mean, like I said, it's just
- 30:37Speaker 1: a rumor, it's just Paddy talking.
- 30:39Speaker 2: One thing about the Paddix is everybody loves to gossip.
- 30:42Speaker 1: So I mean it could just be someone started something
- 30:45Speaker 1: and who knows. But like you say, if the broadcast
- 30:47Speaker 1: contracts aren't required to have the twenty one.
- 30:50Speaker 2: Racist who a was I talking to? Who was I
- 30:52Speaker 2: talking to over the weekend? Someone said, oh, Bradley Smith.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Someone said Bradley said, oh yeah, there's twenty one races
- 31:01Speaker 1: in the calendar, and he go, what do you know
- 31:02Speaker 1: about KATA being canceled? So I mean it is really
- 31:06Speaker 1: really interesting that that the moment. But can I just
- 31:09Speaker 1: take way back to Jorge as well for one second?
- 31:12Speaker 1: Jappel Jack appleyard on the during Q two. He's held
- 31:16Speaker 1: on the broadcast. Look out for Joe Martine. He's running
- 31:19Speaker 1: the new arrow. Now it did the first stint come
- 31:22Speaker 1: back in switched arrow went back to the old one
- 31:25Speaker 1: for the second half. That's how he managed to put
- 31:27Speaker 1: on polse. I think you're on the money there. I
- 31:29Speaker 1: think with what you're saying is he's playing around a
- 31:32Speaker 1: little bit, But I think he is reverting back to
- 31:35Speaker 1: what he knows, what he's comfortable with and just riding
- 31:38Speaker 1: the bike without heat can manage to ride the bike.
- 31:41Speaker 4: And it's one of those things that for a rider
- 31:43Speaker 4: like him, if you have a poor race and your
- 31:46Speaker 4: performance is bad, or you have a crash or something,
- 31:47Speaker 4: if you've got something new on the bike, that becomes
- 31:50Speaker 4: one of those things like is it me? Is it
- 31:52Speaker 4: the bike? Is it something I've tried that was new?
- 31:54Speaker 4: Like you take one variable out of the equation, the
- 31:57Speaker 4: fewer variables he has in the equation for him is
- 32:00Speaker 4: better from a psychological point of view. So it's basically
- 32:03Speaker 4: it's me and this bike that I know. And so
- 32:06Speaker 4: when he was running for Promac to Catti, that thing
- 32:07Speaker 4: wasn't getting a whole heap of updates because they were
- 32:09Speaker 4: a satellite team as much as they were an official
- 32:11Speaker 4: satellite team. So he's used to dealing with what he
- 32:14Speaker 4: has and fine tuning that to a point where he
- 32:16Speaker 4: likes it, and you do wonder if that's the playbook
- 32:18Speaker 4: for him for the rest of the season, rather than
- 32:21Speaker 4: chasing theoretical performance that comes with possible downsides and just adds.
- 32:25Speaker 3: A little bit of doubt.
- 32:26Speaker 4: You do wonder if he's going to really drill down
- 32:29Speaker 4: on what it is that he knows. And it's a
- 32:32Speaker 4: different question if he's the one chasing people in the championship,
- 32:34Speaker 4: but right now he's the guy at the top, and
- 32:36Speaker 4: so he needs to take less risks than everybody else
- 32:39Speaker 4: because he's got this margin. I just think it's going
- 32:42Speaker 4: to be really interesting to see what he does and
- 32:44Speaker 4: then also what everyone else does in response to that,
- 32:46Speaker 4: because when you're needing to chase performance, you will take
- 32:49Speaker 4: more risk and that's just going to be a storyline
- 32:52Speaker 4: that I think comes to the form more and more
- 32:54Speaker 4: as these races tick down. Whether we get to twenty
- 32:56Speaker 4: one or twenty two, we don't know, but that's going
- 32:59Speaker 4: to be a more significant thing.
- 33:00Speaker 3: I think as we head towards.
- 33:01Speaker 1: November, let's move on quickly to the remaining categories, and
- 33:05Speaker 1: we had three this weekend, so we will touch on
- 33:08Speaker 1: our Aussies. Let's go in a moto to Sena ageis
- 33:11Speaker 1: Senna fantastic Friday super Fast caught up with them that
- 33:14Speaker 1: evening and just said sorry. Going into Saturday, said that
- 33:19Speaker 1: he had some issues with his clutch that was making
- 33:22Speaker 1: let bike kind of in his terms, whoa whoa walk
- 33:25Speaker 1: into the.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Corners, which was hilarious to hear, and then just just
- 33:29Speaker 2: struggled for the rest of the weekend.
- 33:31Speaker 1: And I think there was just some technical issues. And
- 33:33Speaker 1: even in his post racer social media report basically said
- 33:36Speaker 1: the same thing. Just just struggled this weekend. And this
- 33:39Speaker 1: is where I think that with Senna is we're starting
- 33:43Speaker 1: to see that difference in what he needs to be
- 33:47Speaker 1: able to stay consistent to fight for that championship win.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Is like little areas like this is where we're going
- 33:54Speaker 1: to see that downfall come through.
- 33:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it feels like small things have big consequences for
- 34:00Speaker 4: him at the moment.
- 34:00Speaker 3: That's probably the way I would describe it.
- 34:02Speaker 4: So yeah, I mean that was a It sounded like
- 34:04Speaker 4: it was a known problem from as far as Saturday.
- 34:07Speaker 3: I don't know how you're right whoa, whoa whoa in
- 34:09Speaker 3: a story, but that's another stuck after work that out.
- 34:13Speaker 3: It doesn't really translate to text, does it.
- 34:14Speaker 4: But yeah, it's it is interesting in that there have
- 34:17Speaker 4: been a couple of weekends this year where I mean
- 34:20Speaker 4: he's obviously been very quick, he's won races and what
- 34:22Speaker 4: have you, But the weekends where things have gone a
- 34:24Speaker 4: bit a bit of skew, they have gone pretty ascue
- 34:27Speaker 4: for him. So yeah, I mean, look a bit like
- 34:29Speaker 4: you're talking about with Couacerera before you come back to
- 34:31Speaker 4: a circuit where you have a memory, in Fabio's case,
- 34:33Speaker 4: a bad one, in Centa's case a very good one
- 34:35Speaker 4: from twenty twenty five. It was just one of those
- 34:38Speaker 4: ones that was magnified that he wasn't really in for
- 34:40Speaker 4: the fire. But the good news for him was that
- 34:42Speaker 4: at least he did not celebrate one lap too early
- 34:44Speaker 4: Anita mate.
- 34:47Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean he did do it all less Spargo
- 34:50Speaker 6: didn't he man, I mean, but so lucky who was
- 34:55Speaker 6: behind was a Goverao.
- 34:58Speaker 2: The fact that like he didn't he missed him, he
- 35:00Speaker 2: didn't just.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Woh, that was insane, absolutely insane, scary, It's scary. But yes, Senna,
- 35:08Speaker 1: he sits sixty one and a half points behind teammate
- 35:11Speaker 1: Manu Gonzales back in third in the Moto two championship,
- 35:14Speaker 1: So look like we.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Still say there's ten or eleven or nine races left
- 35:19Speaker 2: in the calendar this y year, ten or nine, yeah, exactly.
- 35:23Speaker 1: So I mean, you know, if Sena can keep that
- 35:25Speaker 1: consistency and whatnot, first, second, or third is definitely on
- 35:29Speaker 1: the cards for him in in the Championship, and you know,
- 35:33Speaker 1: there's still the rumors of him potentially moving up to
- 35:35Speaker 1: Moto GP next year. We don't know what the outcome
- 35:38Speaker 1: is yet for twenty twenty seven for him, but I
- 35:41Speaker 1: think the fact that he's top three in the World
- 35:43Speaker 1: Championship in Moto two and he's representing us in the
- 35:46Speaker 1: Australian flag is phenomenal that we've still got that that
- 35:49Speaker 1: there for Moto two and then moved down to Moto three.
- 35:51Speaker 1: We've got Joel Kelso the same thing for Joel this weekend.
- 35:54Speaker 1: He was like, you know, Silverstone's going to be interesting
- 35:56Speaker 1: home race for him and his team. When I spoke
- 35:59Speaker 1: to him Saturday morning. It's one of these things guys,
- 36:02Speaker 1: you just end up going for coffee and you just
- 36:04Speaker 1: happened to see these riders in the paddock, which is
- 36:06Speaker 1: so funny, and it's like, hey, how are you tell
- 36:08Speaker 1: us how's work? Been for you this weekend and when
- 36:11Speaker 1: Jolie he goes, you know, and qualifying wasn't the best.
- 36:13Speaker 1: He was further down the field than he wanted to be.
- 36:16Speaker 1: But what we see in Moto III with Kieleez crashing
- 36:19Speaker 1: out and whatnot, Joel was able to make his way
- 36:22Speaker 1: up and he got a top ten finished.
- 36:23Speaker 2: I think he was sixth in the end est.
- 36:26Speaker 4: Yeah, rest of the year, best of the year. It's
- 36:28Speaker 4: one of those things. Well, to let you know how
- 36:31Speaker 4: the how the sausage is made. Here at Fox Sports,
- 36:34Speaker 4: I'm sitting there watching I'm watching the post race press
- 36:36Speaker 4: conference while Moto three is going on because of the
- 36:38Speaker 4: changing the schedule. So I've got a timing screen going
- 36:41Speaker 4: and I'm just seeing Joel's name go further and further up.
- 36:44Speaker 4: But I'm also transcribing the Bazechi Fernandez Martine press conference
- 36:48Speaker 4: at the same time, so I'm sort of like playing
- 36:49Speaker 4: to you two pianos at the same time, and neither
- 36:51Speaker 4: of them very well. And so I kept watching him
- 36:54Speaker 4: coming up and coming up, and then I got to
- 36:55Speaker 4: the end of the race. Of God, good lord, He's
- 36:56Speaker 4: finished sixth. That's fantastic. I still haven't seen the race.
- 36:59Speaker 4: I've still got to go back and watch it because
- 37:00Speaker 4: it's three days later and I've been trying to do
- 37:02Speaker 4: follow ups from Motor GP, but seeing him right up
- 37:06Speaker 4: towards the sharp end again, and my understanding was Moto
- 37:09Speaker 4: three was pretty manic and Moto two was probably the
- 37:12Speaker 4: best Motor two race of the year, So I'm glad
- 37:13Speaker 4: I got to see that one at least, but yet
- 37:15Speaker 4: really good result for him. It was sort of like
- 37:17Speaker 4: the reverse Senator a degree, wasn't it, because I think
- 37:19Speaker 4: Sena came in with high expectations and didn't get the result,
- 37:22Speaker 4: And I guess Joel's expectations weren't super super high and
- 37:25Speaker 4: he had the best Sundays at all year exactly.
- 37:28Speaker 1: We spoke to him leading up into Silverstone and you know,
- 37:30Speaker 1: he said, it's a race that yeah, he felt confident
- 37:33Speaker 1: going in homegrownd Prix and everything for the team, like
- 37:35Speaker 1: we said, but he goes, you know, I'm fighting with
- 37:38Speaker 1: what I can with this Honda, and we're still building,
- 37:40Speaker 1: still developing the bike, and I think we're seeing that,
- 37:42Speaker 1: we're seeing that he's reaping the rewards for what he
- 37:44Speaker 1: has been able to put in, and like he said,
- 37:46Speaker 1: now he's like, Okay, I've put energy into the bike
- 37:49Speaker 1: and the development, but now it's time to put that
- 37:50Speaker 1: energy back into myself as a writer.
- 37:53Speaker 2: And he ultimately wants to.
- 37:54Speaker 1: Win, and so you know, if he can continue this
- 37:56Speaker 1: momentum as we head to Aragon and tracks like that,
- 37:59Speaker 1: then for sure, I don't think there's a reason why
- 38:02Speaker 1: he can't be back up the front as he continues
- 38:04Speaker 1: on for the rest of the year.
- 38:06Speaker 4: Yeah, it feels to me he feels like a guy
- 38:08Speaker 4: who's going to have a much better second half than
- 38:09Speaker 4: the first half.
- 38:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And I think he's extremely aware of that.
- 38:14Speaker 1: And I know we mentioned there was the three lower
- 38:16Speaker 1: categories this weekend. That's because the bag of World Cup
- 38:19Speaker 1: was on display as well. And we do have an
- 38:21Speaker 1: Ossie writing in that Archie McDonald. He managed to put
- 38:24Speaker 1: that Harley on poll and one race two Sunday afternoon
- 38:28Speaker 1: after Moto three. So even though it's a much shorter race,
- 38:32Speaker 1: totally different style to any of the Motor grumpries or
- 38:35Speaker 1: Motor two Moto three racing, it's still nice to have
- 38:37Speaker 1: an Ossie in the world World class that you know
- 38:40Speaker 1: they do some of the rounds they're going to tracks
- 38:43Speaker 1: that we are not used to seeing a Harley Davidson
- 38:46Speaker 1: on and he managed to do a lap time faster
- 38:48Speaker 1: than Scott Ogden who put the Moto three of the
- 38:51Speaker 1: CIP machine on pole. So it was an emotional race
- 38:54Speaker 1: for Archie if anyone did see that all over socials.
- 38:57Speaker 1: But happy to see that Ossie flag on the top
- 38:59Speaker 1: step in in the bag.
- 39:00Speaker 4: Of World Cup and the contrast between those bikes and
- 39:03Speaker 4: the Motor three bikes and how they go about extracting
- 39:05Speaker 4: a lap time, it's just it's kind of comic or
- 39:07Speaker 4: when you look at what they look like side by
- 39:09Speaker 4: side to going at least things are the same race weekend.
- 39:11Speaker 4: But yeah, it's there's more than one way to get
- 39:14Speaker 4: a laptome out of a bike, and those two series
- 39:16Speaker 4: definitely prove that.
- 39:18Speaker 1: It's one of those things I was thinking about when
- 39:20Speaker 1: I was there watching. I'm going imagine the bagger is
- 39:23Speaker 1: coming to Philip Island.
- 39:25Speaker 4: Audio same thing.
- 39:26Speaker 2: Would love it, would love it.
- 39:28Speaker 1: It's great Like in Motor America, you know, the Baggers
- 39:31Speaker 1: is such a crowd drawer and I think in Australia
- 39:35Speaker 1: it would be the same thing. So there you go, SBK,
- 39:38Speaker 1: maybe that's your go to is to bring the bagger
- 39:41Speaker 1: to the bag of racing to Australia.
- 39:43Speaker 3: The challenge is on, absolutely.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Challenges on, but we get two more weeks, so summer
- 39:48Speaker 1: break isn't quite over. We had a little detour a Silverstone,
- 39:51Speaker 1: but it is two weeks until Moto GP heads too, MotorLand,
- 39:54Speaker 1: Aragon and.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Let's say Mark Marquez, Alex Marquez.
- 39:58Speaker 1: They kind of call it another lot of their home
- 40:01Speaker 1: races because you know it's Spain and it's.
- 40:04Speaker 2: The Marquez brothers.
- 40:05Speaker 1: But we're going to head to Model and Aragon and
- 40:07Speaker 1: that famous brick wall in the background in two weeks time.
- 40:11Speaker 1: But don't miss any of the action. Live and I
- 40:14Speaker 1: Break Free on Fox Sports and KO for every practice, qualifying,
- 40:17Speaker 1: sprint and race in two weeks time.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Aragon say up today with.

- 40:42Speaker 1: Because I caught up with Archie McDonald back in Acid
- 40:45Speaker 1: and I've got an interview with him and the team owner,

- 40:50Speaker 1: out shortly as well. That is enough yapping from me
- 40:54Speaker 1: and Matt Clayton. We're going to be back real soon
- 40:56Speaker 1: with more motor GP pitsor
