- 0:01Speaker 1: Thank you. Taylor just said that Mel Kuyper Jr. is
- 0:12Speaker 1: on his Mount Rushmore of guests for this radio show
- 0:15Speaker 1: and podcast.
- 0:16Speaker 2: How do you feel about that, Mel? Go ahead, Taylor,
- 0:18Speaker 2: before Mel responds. Go ahead.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Mel, I was going to say you're top two and
- 0:22Speaker 3: you're not two.
- 0:24Speaker 4: How about that?
- 0:28Speaker 5: I know, 32 probably, Taylor, right? Oh, my gosh. That
- 0:32Speaker 5: 32 is a nice number. That's a pretty good number.
- 0:34Speaker 5: You know what my favorite number was as a kid
- 0:37Speaker 5: playing sports? It was 22 because of Jim Palmer. So,
- 0:40Speaker 5: you know, Jim Palmer, 22, was my favorite. So, yeah,
- 0:43Speaker 5: I'm satisfied being 22. But, you know, is that Mount Rushmore?
- 0:46Speaker 5: Who is on that Mount Rushmore of guests on your podcast?
- 0:49Speaker 2: Who is it?
- 0:50Speaker 3: Chris Sims has to be on there.
- 0:52Speaker 5: Yep. Chris Sims?
- 0:53Speaker 3: Tim Kirchen has to be on there.
- 0:55Speaker 5: Oh, Timmy. I'd love to.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Mel Kuyper. And then we're still looking for a fourth,
- 1:00Speaker 3: I think.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yes, we're fishing for a fourth.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:02Speaker 5: All right. Yes. All right. We got Baltimore every which
- 1:05Speaker 5: way there, you know, with me and Timmy.
- 1:06Speaker 2: That's good. That's good. Well, of course, Mel is our
- 1:08Speaker 2: Baltimore Orioles correspondent.
- 1:10Speaker 1: And after a game like last night and a catch
- 1:12Speaker 1: like that, you have to have him on today.
- 1:14Speaker 5: I went to bed on a diagonal thing. I went
- 1:16Speaker 5: to bed at 1-1. They have a rain delay. I'm
- 1:19Speaker 5: waiting and waiting. I said, I got to get up.
- 1:20Speaker 5: I had stuff to do this morning early. So I said,
- 1:22Speaker 5: and I found out Kalizer made the catch to save
- 1:24Speaker 5: the day. Would have been a walk-off. Would have lost
- 1:27Speaker 5: that game to Colorado. Instead of being 69-69 and now
- 1:30Speaker 5: a half game out of first place, we wouldn't have been.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Now we got the Red Sox coming up in Cleveland.
- 1:35Speaker 5: After we got two more with Colorado... So we'll see
- 1:37Speaker 5: how that goes. We've got Boston coming to town. We've
- 1:39Speaker 5: got Cleveland coming to town. And that's going to define
- 1:42Speaker 5: the season. I think over those next X amount of days,
- 1:45Speaker 5: we'll tell you whether the Orioles will sneak into the
- 1:47Speaker 5: playoffs or they won't. Right.
- 1:49Speaker 4: So Mel, how much, how much Orioles baseball did you
- 1:52Speaker 4: watch this summer? Last time we talked to you, you
- 1:54Speaker 4: said you were shutting it down for the summer. It
- 1:56Speaker 4: was going to be all about orange crushes, crab cakes,
- 1:59Speaker 4: going out on the boat and Orioles baseball.
- 2:01Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. It was a lot of Orioles because of
- 2:03Speaker 5: them being teasing me all the time, getting the two,
- 2:06Speaker 5: three under, and then going back to five under and
- 2:08Speaker 5: then getting it. Then finally this week, They got it
- 2:11Speaker 5: to 500. I kept telling my daughter, I said, Lauren,
- 2:13Speaker 5: if they just get to 500, and it's disgustingly embarrassing
- 2:17Speaker 5: American League, where only four teams are over 500, I believe,
- 2:21Speaker 5: they can get in the playoffs. Basically, they'll all at
- 2:23Speaker 5: least except one team is going to make the playoffs
- 2:25Speaker 5: if that happened, which would be Toronto if the Orioles
- 2:28Speaker 5: beat them out for that last wildcard spot. So it's
- 2:31Speaker 5: been a crazy season in the American League to allow
- 2:34Speaker 5: this team that was five games under to think they
- 2:37Speaker 5: can make the playoffs, and now they are only a
- 2:38Speaker 5: half game out as we speak. It's pretty amazing when
- 2:41Speaker 5: you've got your best player hitting. 221. Colton Couser is hitting. 220.
- 2:45Speaker 5: He made the great catch, right? Jackson is at, what,. 230, okay?
- 2:50Speaker 5: You think about where he is now, Holiday. So, yeah,
- 2:54Speaker 5: Alonzo doing a great job. But this team, it's just league.
- 2:57Speaker 5: They don't hit for average anymore. So it's amazing. Like
- 3:00Speaker 5: I say, with Gunner at. 220, this team is on
- 3:02Speaker 5: the verge of maybe sneaking into the playoffs.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Mel, when you're looking at the AL East, if they
- 3:06Speaker 3: do get four teams in, the Rays, the Yankees, the
- 3:09Speaker 3: Red Sox, the Orioles, How perfect is it that the
- 3:11Speaker 3: team that doesn't get in is the one that made
- 3:13Speaker 3: the World Series last year?
- 3:15Speaker 5: Pretty amazing. Yeah, with the turnaround of Boulanger. That is true. And, yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 5: I'm watching, like I say, VAR shows now somewhere else
- 3:21Speaker 5: and playing with the Astros. And, yeah, it's just crazy. But,
- 3:25Speaker 5: you know, that league has allowed this to happen. The
- 3:27Speaker 5: American League is just awful. I mean, you got teams
- 3:31Speaker 5: that are 500 or below that are still winning. up
- 3:35Speaker 5: for maybe winning the division in the Central and West.
- 3:37Speaker 5: It's crazy to watch. And I love watching Houston Astros
- 3:41Speaker 5: with Todd Callis doing call-in-the-games. His father, Harry Callis, was
- 3:44Speaker 5: one of my all-time favorites. Harry Callis was in... Y'all
- 3:48Speaker 5: bet the Mount Rushmore of broadcasters put Harry Callis in there.
- 3:51Speaker 5: And Todd, his son, does a great job. I watch
- 3:54Speaker 5: Houston Astros games because of Todd Callis. That's it. Love
- 3:57Speaker 5: hearing that voice. So he's got the voice kind of
- 3:59Speaker 5: like his father. But boy, they say the great voices
- 4:02Speaker 5: of all time. That would be a Mount Rushmore with
- 4:05Speaker 5: the Chris Shankles and the Vin Scullies and the Lindsey Nelsons.
- 4:08Speaker 5: I was a big Bill Fleming fan. And the list
- 4:11Speaker 5: goes to Keith Jackson. I mean, you'd be hard pressed
- 4:14Speaker 5: to just keep that at four in terms of the
- 4:16Speaker 5: greatest voices of all time for Mount Rushmore. for college
- 4:18Speaker 5: football in the NFL.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Mikey, I was going to ask him to fill out
- 4:20Speaker 1: that Matt Rushmore. And then I realized it's Mel and
- 4:23Speaker 1: I didn't have to ask him that he was going
- 4:24Speaker 1: to fill it out himself.
- 4:25Speaker 2: How about that?
- 4:25Speaker 5: Anyway, I was a big in the NFL, Charlie Jones,
- 4:29Speaker 5: Charlie Jones, internal notes, four o'clock games. It'd be out
- 4:33Speaker 5: in San Diego at the Murph. It would be Charlie
- 4:35Speaker 5: Jones calling those games and Don Crickey and Dick Enberg
- 4:38Speaker 5: and all those amazing voices that we grew up with.
- 4:41Speaker 5: In addition to Howard Cosell and Don Meredith and, and
- 4:44Speaker 5: Frank Gifford and, It's just, like I said, the era,
- 4:46Speaker 5: to be born in the 60s and in the 70s
- 4:49Speaker 5: and through the 80s and have those amazing voices in
- 4:51Speaker 5: broadcasting was just, that's why we were all drawn to sports.
- 4:55Speaker 5: I always say we were drawn to sports. Why? Because
- 4:57Speaker 5: of the great voices that covered the games.
- 4:59Speaker 1: We'll get to some football and we'll get to a
- 5:01Speaker 1: utensil question that we have for you in just a second.
- 5:04Speaker 1: But since you love baseball so much and since we're
- 5:07Speaker 1: here and you love Mikey A, I will have Mikey
- 5:10Speaker 1: A share a story with you from his kids' Little
- 5:12Speaker 1: League Championship. And let Mel decide if he was being
- 5:16Speaker 1: an embarrassment or not.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Go ahead, Mikey.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Really?
- 5:21Speaker 5: Really? That's what?
- 5:22Speaker 2: All right.
- 5:23Speaker 4: So, Mel, from literally T-ball through this run, every time
- 5:28Speaker 4: my kid gets up, I yell, here we go, Nicholas,
- 5:31Speaker 4: to the point where the other team starts doing it, too.
- 5:34Speaker 5: But.
- 5:35Speaker 4: This tournament, I started incorporating a little bit of a
- 5:39Speaker 4: song and dance where I taught some of the kids
- 5:42Speaker 4: at a banquet how to do the Gangnam Style. You
- 5:46Speaker 4: remember that? Mel, you don't remember that.
- 5:47Speaker 5: It's Mel.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I'm not even asking you, Mel. It's Mel.
- 5:49Speaker 4: But, yeah, so it's a lot of this, Mel. It's
- 5:52Speaker 4: a lot of this. And I told them every time.
- 5:53Speaker 5: A lot of stuff I don't want to see, but
- 5:54Speaker 5: that's okay. Of course, Mel. But I told them. Yeah.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Any player that gets on second base, I will dance.
- 6:01Speaker 4: I will dance in the stands for them. If you
- 6:03Speaker 4: can hit a double or better, I will dance.
- 6:05Speaker 5: Yes.
- 6:06Speaker 4: And so every time there was a kid that got
- 6:09Speaker 4: up in a big spot, I'd yell, I feel like dancing.
- 6:12Speaker 4: And Mel, a couple of kids hit some doubles, and
- 6:17Speaker 4: I got out of breath, right? Because I had to
- 6:18Speaker 4: dance in the stands.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Yes, he was screaming this from the bleachers, telling kids
- 6:22Speaker 1: if they get to second base or better, that daddy's
- 6:24Speaker 1: going to dance.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:26Speaker 5: I think Nicholas was hoping for some strikeouts, so he's
- 6:29Speaker 5: not even embarrassed.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Back with his eyes closed, Mel.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Oh, my God. What's the dance look like, Mikey?
- 6:37Speaker 2: Mel, it's a lot of this, Mel.
- 6:39Speaker 5: It's a lot of this.
- 6:39Speaker 4: It almost looks like a gallop, yeah.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Oh, we got to get a video of that.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Well, you can't shout that to the kid who's at bat, right?
- 6:48Speaker 1: He's got enough pressure on him. He can't say, hey,
- 6:51Speaker 1: daddy wants to dance, get to second.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Oh, I'm a walk-up.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Listen, I got a few laps.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Can you imagine if Nick ends up making it into
- 6:58Speaker 5: the collegiate ranks and he's playing wherever, Coastal Carolina, wherever
- 7:02Speaker 5: he's playing, and then he gets into Major League Baseball
- 7:05Speaker 5: and he's got a father like this? Can you imagine that? No.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Mel, he just joined a new team, and I'm told
- 7:11Speaker 4: that they're very stuffy at games. They're about to loosen up.
- 7:14Speaker 5: I promise you, Mel.
- 7:15Speaker 4: They're about to loosen up.
- 7:17Speaker 5: Stuffy no more.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Mel, how excited are you for football? Football's here. How
- 7:22Speaker 2: excited are you?
- 7:23Speaker 5: I'm done with the sun. I'm done with the 90 degrees.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Put it on the poll, Taylor.
- 7:27Speaker 5: I'm not done with the crab cakes because I'm back
- 7:28Speaker 5: eating crab cakes after a 10-year hiatus. I'm not having
- 7:31Speaker 5: a crab cake with my shellfish allergy, which wasn't. Got tested,
- 7:34Speaker 5: no problem, but I was still leery. I jumped back in.
- 7:37Speaker 5: crab cakes every other day now since basically mid-June. So
- 7:40Speaker 5: I'm back doing that. So I had a great summer
- 7:42Speaker 5: with that. But, no, it's nothing better this time of
- 7:45Speaker 5: the year because everybody's got opinions. Most of them are wrong.
- 7:48Speaker 5: And then they start playing, and we see everything, all
- 7:51Speaker 5: the shockers and surprises. So, no, I couldn't be more
- 7:53Speaker 5: excited for an NFL season and a college football season
- 7:56Speaker 5: than I am this year.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Mel, how does this quarterback– now, I know a lot
- 7:59Speaker 1: could change. The season hasn't– well, it started, but it
- 8:02Speaker 1: starts officially week one coming up this weekend. How does
- 8:05Speaker 1: this quarterback class stack up against some of the other
- 8:08Speaker 1: great quarterback classes in draft history?
- 8:11Speaker 5: It could be really good. It could fizzle like it
- 8:13Speaker 5: did last year. I always say it's going to be
- 8:15Speaker 5: fizzle or fantastic. And maybe it's going to be fantastic.
- 8:19Speaker 5: If it's not, then we're going to have some fan bases.
- 8:21Speaker 5: It's going to be a big-time letdown at Oregon, at Texas.
- 8:25Speaker 5: They're the two top two because everything sets up for
- 8:27Speaker 5: those two teams with Sark and Dan Lanning. to be
- 8:30Speaker 5: playing for a national title. And then you got C.J.
- 8:33Speaker 5: Carr at Notre Dame trying to get it done without
- 8:35Speaker 5: all the great weapons he had last year from Malachi
- 8:38Speaker 5: Fields to Eli Raritan. Then I'll get to the big two,
- 8:41Speaker 5: which are Jadarian Price and Jeremiah Love. Taking all those
- 8:45Speaker 5: guys away from C.J. Carr, how does he do? How
- 8:47Speaker 5: does Drew Mestemaker do going from North Texas to Oklahoma State?
- 8:50Speaker 5: How does Darian Mensah do going from Duke to Miami
- 8:53Speaker 5: with all those weapons? and the Hurricanes coming off an
- 8:55Speaker 5: opportunity last year to almost win a national title. Does
- 8:58Speaker 5: he get it done? I watched Jaden Maiava at USC.
- 9:02Speaker 5: Accurate balls all over the place, 25 for 29, granted
- 9:05Speaker 5: against San Jose State, but against air, it's not easy
- 9:07Speaker 5: to do what he did. So I want to see
- 9:09Speaker 5: if he keeps developing. He could be in that mix,
- 9:11Speaker 5: and a host of others. So it could be a
- 9:13Speaker 5: year where we have five or six first-round quarterbacks, at
- 9:16Speaker 5: least the way it looks on paper. Does it materialize?
- 9:19Speaker 5: We'll see.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Mel, if I told you come draft time, Dante Moore
- 9:24Speaker 4: and Arch Manning are not going to go number one,
- 9:26Speaker 4: but a quarterback is. Who would you put your money on?
- 9:29Speaker 2: Wow.
- 9:29Speaker 5: Probably CJ Carr right now at Notre Dame because they
- 9:33Speaker 5: have a great defense. And that defense is going to
- 9:35Speaker 5: not allow many points. And if they can just manage it,
- 9:39Speaker 5: and he doesn't have, you know, he's got good receivers,
- 9:41Speaker 5: not the elite guy. Now, Ian Premer, the true freshman
- 9:43Speaker 5: tight end, could be phenomenal. They always are going to
- 9:46Speaker 5: find a running back, but not anybody like Jeremiah Love.
- 9:49Speaker 5: Come on, Jeremiah Love, you can put him out at
- 9:51Speaker 5: the slider wide, and he's going to be phenomenal. So,
- 9:54Speaker 5: and then Jadarian Price, I thought we'd get Jadarian back.
- 9:56Speaker 5: He goes to Seattle. So he comes out as a
- 9:59Speaker 5: late first round picks. So to lose those two running
- 10:01Speaker 5: backs who are also, in Jeremiah Love's case, like an
- 10:04Speaker 5: extra receiver, that's a lot to overcome, but the defense
- 10:07Speaker 5: is so good. And C.J. Carr is so good that
- 10:11Speaker 5: I think the offense will be good enough. Mensah at
- 10:13Speaker 5: Miami could be right there, like I said, and then
- 10:16Speaker 5: Maiava at USC could be because they got freshmen galore
- 10:19Speaker 5: at USC. I watched a kid for USC, this defensive
- 10:23Speaker 5: end out of New Jersey by the name of Luke Wafel.
- 10:26Speaker 5: I scouted his father, David Wafel, when he was at
- 10:28Speaker 5: Duke in the 90s. He came out in the 94 draft,
- 10:31Speaker 5: undrafted free agent. David Wafle's son is Luke Wafle. He's
- 10:34Speaker 5: got another son, Owen, who's at Duke. Was it Michigan
- 10:36Speaker 5: and Penn State? Now it's Duke. But this Luke Wafle,
- 10:39Speaker 5: I'm watching this kid, number 94. Is that DeMarcus Ware
- 10:42Speaker 5: out there? Is that Joey Bosa, Nick Bosa? This guy,
- 10:46Speaker 5: and they showed him. Talk about chiseled. He's like 6'5, 6'6,
- 10:51Speaker 5: like 265, 270. He may play in that game that
- 10:55Speaker 5: was unbelievable. Lincoln Riley said he's never been around a
- 10:57Speaker 5: true freshman this good. Luke Wafle, we talk about Jeremiah Smith,
- 11:01Speaker 5: the wide receiver. He would have been eligible after his
- 11:03Speaker 5: freshman year. Where would he go? This Luke Wafle kid,
- 11:05Speaker 5: let's watch him at USC. And USC could be really
- 11:07Speaker 5: good if all these freshmen, like Wafle, are as good
- 11:10Speaker 5: as advertised. And a couple of those wide receivers look
- 11:12Speaker 5: like they're super talented. The tight end looks really good
- 11:14Speaker 5: as well. So for Jaden Maiava, there's a lot of
- 11:16Speaker 5: talent around him. Granted, it's young, but I'm interested to
- 11:19Speaker 5: see what USC does this year as well. And that
- 11:21Speaker 5: quarterback who I liked at UNLV, Maiava, now it seems
- 11:24Speaker 5: like he's really coming into his own this year with
- 11:26Speaker 5: the Trojans.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Similar question to Mikey, Mel. If a quarterback didn't go first,
- 11:32Speaker 3: who's the most likely non-quarterback to go?
- 11:35Speaker 2: Who's the best player in the draft, non-quarterback position?
- 11:37Speaker 5: Yeah, the best player in the draft, regardless, is Jeremiah Smith.
- 11:42Speaker 5: And he's got Julian Sand throwing him the football. And
- 11:45Speaker 5: this kid, if you think about wide receivers, we had
- 11:48Speaker 5: Dave Parks go number one in the early 60s. Great
- 11:50Speaker 5: player at Texas Tech and in the NFL. Then we
- 11:53Speaker 5: had Irving Fryer, Nebraska, in the NFL with the Pats.
- 11:55Speaker 5: Then we had Keyshawn Johnson, great player at USC. Then
- 11:58Speaker 5: the NFL. They were the number one picks overall at
- 12:00Speaker 5: wide receiver. Hadn't had anybody else. We've had some guys
- 12:03Speaker 5: go high, like two. Calvin Johnson went second overall. But
- 12:07Speaker 5: number one player in this draft is Jeremiah Smith. Will
- 12:09Speaker 5: he go number one? Probably not, because the team picking
- 12:12Speaker 5: one and probably two and three will maybe need a quarterback,
- 12:15Speaker 5: probably need a quarterback, and take Dante Moore, Arch Manning,
- 12:18Speaker 5: CJ Carr, whoever. So he probably won't go. But whoever
- 12:22Speaker 5: gets Jeremiah Smith, we'll get the best player in this draft.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Mel, have you ever scouted someone's grandfather? That's such a
- 12:28Speaker 1: cool story. You scouted the father, now the son.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Ever a grandfather?
- 12:32Speaker 5: Hey, yes, Eli Raritan's father. Wow. Scott Raritan, when he
- 12:37Speaker 5: was an offensive lineman at Nebraska, you think about it,
- 12:39Speaker 5: his son played at Notre Dame, and then Eli at
- 12:41Speaker 5: Notre Dame, tight end, third-round pick of the Patriots. Now
- 12:44Speaker 5: we've got David Wafel's son, Luke, at USC. In a
- 12:48Speaker 5: few years, he's going to be great. Remember Nick Bosa?
- 12:51Speaker 4: Yes.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Nick Bosa at Boston College, and you've got Joey and
- 12:55Speaker 5: Nick coming along. So you think about where we were with–
- 12:58Speaker 5: with the Bosa family, with Nick and Joey doing a
- 13:01Speaker 5: great job. So, yeah, I think the Bosa family, phenomenal,
- 13:06Speaker 5: with what they were able to do from Boston College
- 13:10Speaker 5: then to Ohio State and the job they've done in
- 13:13Speaker 5: the National Football League. So the Bosa family, certainly the
- 13:17Speaker 5: Raritan family. Obviously with Arch. Archie came along before I
- 13:21Speaker 5: was coming along with the draft, but you had, of course,
- 13:23Speaker 5: Archie and the great Manning family. But like I said,
- 13:26Speaker 5: David Wafle was written up in my draft report in 1994.
- 13:28Speaker 5: Went undrafted, but I wrote him up. He had a write-up,
- 13:31Speaker 5: a defensive end coming out of Duke, and now he's got,
- 13:34Speaker 5: like I say, Luke playing, hopefully great college football and
- 13:37Speaker 5: having a great year with the USC Trojans.

- 15:01Speaker 2: Mel, do you find yourself giving a potential.
- 15:04Speaker 1: NFL player a better grade because he comes from a
- 15:07Speaker 1: certain program or school and been.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Coached by a certain person?
- 15:10Speaker 1: I ask that because it seems like Ohio State, all
- 15:12Speaker 1: their guys that go to the NFL seem to be
- 15:14Speaker 1: really good and productive players.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Well, how they're coached is important. I don't factor in
- 15:21Speaker 5: as much of where they came from or who coached them.
- 15:24Speaker 5: It's like, what are they? Who did they become? But
- 15:26Speaker 5: it's usually a result of what you just said. who
- 15:28Speaker 5: the coach was, the program, and those assistant coaches that
- 15:31Speaker 5: are doing the hands-on coaching of those players. And I
- 15:34Speaker 5: said this morning, I was doing a show about having
- 15:37Speaker 5: 24 coaches. Now, it's almost every player has a coach.
- 15:40Speaker 5: It used to be you had a linebacker coach, secondary coach, D-line.
- 15:42Speaker 5: Now everybody's got a coach. Safety's got a coach. Corner's
- 15:45Speaker 5: got a coach. Inside, off-ball. Everybody's got coach outside, edge guys,
- 15:49Speaker 5: pass rush specialists. You got it all covered, right? So
- 15:52Speaker 5: it's a different ballgame than it was, but... These guys
- 15:54Speaker 5: coming into the league now are so, we're going to say,
- 15:56Speaker 5: NFL ready. The college kids coming out of high school.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Like I said, I look at a Luke Waifu, I'm thinking, boy,
- 16:01Speaker 5: this guy looks like he should be going into the
- 16:02Speaker 5: NFL draft this year. And he's a true freshman coming
- 16:05Speaker 5: out of the New Jersey prep rank. So it's amazing
- 16:07Speaker 5: the development of these kids. I was back at Calvert
- 16:10Speaker 5: Hall when we developed that championship team at Calvert Hall
- 16:12Speaker 5: in 2010. First time we won a title since 82.
- 16:15Speaker 5: And I was around those players. for practice and every
- 16:18Speaker 5: game and going on the road and traveling with them
- 16:21Speaker 5: and seeing the opposition and all over this area, the
- 16:24Speaker 5: high school talent. And that's when I became aware of
- 16:27Speaker 5: just how physically and athletically gifted and how ahead of
- 16:31Speaker 5: the game they are from what I grew up with
- 16:34Speaker 5: in the 60s and 70s and 80s. So the high
- 16:36Speaker 5: school talent around the country, and we see them on
- 16:39Speaker 5: TV now all over the place on ESPN, enormous. So
- 16:42Speaker 5: that's great to watch. When you see high school football now,
- 16:45Speaker 5: it's almost like you're watching college football.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Mel, before week one, Colin Simmons, the edge rusher from Texas,
- 16:50Speaker 3: or Dylan Stewart, the edge rusher from South Carolina, do
- 16:53Speaker 3: you have a preference there?
- 16:54Speaker 5: Taylor, I would say right now the most more talented
- 16:58Speaker 5: is Dylan Stewart. the more productive was Colin Simmons. Why?
- 17:03Speaker 5: Because Dylan Stewart was banged up last year. Wasn't it
- 17:06Speaker 5: even when we were close to 100%? If he can
- 17:08Speaker 5: stay healthy, Dylan Stewart can ascend to that top spot
- 17:11Speaker 5: because he is an LTPer. He looks the part. Colin Simmons,
- 17:15Speaker 5: not as big, but the production. He's getting into backfield.
- 17:18Speaker 5: He's getting after the quarterback. He's wreaking havoc all over
- 17:21Speaker 5: the place for Texas as a marked man, yet he's
- 17:23Speaker 5: getting it done. And by the way, Ethan Burke, defensive
- 17:26Speaker 5: end at texas made the ravens as an undrafted free
- 17:28Speaker 5: agent how he went on draft is beyond me but
- 17:31Speaker 5: this kid the energy he played with the production at
- 17:33Speaker 5: texas really strong he's a good player and they got
- 17:36Speaker 5: an undrafted free agent quarterback uh finiano out of connecticut
- 17:40Speaker 5: how about that kid you know he had one interception
- 17:42Speaker 5: at connecticut goes on draft he's lightening up in the
- 17:44Speaker 5: preseason for the baltimore ravens but to the point about
- 17:46Speaker 5: the i was like to say the past rushers And
- 17:49Speaker 5: Ethan Burke with Simmons. I think Simmons and Dylan Stort.
- 17:53Speaker 5: But I would probably, if you said, who would you
- 17:55Speaker 5: bet on if everything works out where they stay healthy,
- 17:59Speaker 5: I would bet on Dylan Stort at South Carolina. I
- 18:01Speaker 5: think his kid, talent off the charts. And if he
- 18:04Speaker 5: can get to that 10-plus sack number, which he will
- 18:06Speaker 5: get to if he's healthy and stays healthy and he's
- 18:08Speaker 5: healthy now, Dylan Stort could be up there near that
- 18:11Speaker 5: top of the draft board.
- 18:13Speaker 4: Mel, if you asked me the thing I miss most
- 18:15Speaker 4: about my days at ESPN, I would say the first
- 18:17Speaker 4: thing would be your Christmas song breakdown five to one
- 18:21Speaker 4: every year. But second would be your college football preview.
- 18:25Speaker 4: So I'm curious which team you're most excited to watch
- 18:28Speaker 4: this year as it pertains to the entirety of college football,
- 18:32Speaker 4: not just one particular player.
- 18:34Speaker 5: I think Oklahoma. And I just did a show with
- 18:36Speaker 5: Dari Noka. He does a great job hosting it at
- 18:38Speaker 5: the radio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. And we're talking about Oklahoma.
- 18:41Speaker 5: What they did last year without John Mateer being healthy. Remember,
- 18:44Speaker 5: he had the broken thumb, couldn't throw the ball, do
- 18:46Speaker 5: the things he was able to do to the level
- 18:48Speaker 5: he did it before the injury. The energy he brings.
- 18:51Speaker 5: And I remember Jack Mildren. I grew up with Jack
- 18:53Speaker 5: Mildren playing quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. They ended up
- 18:56Speaker 5: being a safety with the Baltimore Colts. And this kid's
- 18:59Speaker 5: got that gutty energizer. Hey, I can run you over.
- 19:04Speaker 5: That's what John Mateer is, a quarterback at Taylor Wine
- 19:07Speaker 5: at defensive end. You had Rutscher plays with that same
- 19:09Speaker 5: energy on that side of the ball. They got the
- 19:11Speaker 5: run stuffer in David Stone, Lewis the linebacker, and they
- 19:14Speaker 5: got Bowens at safety. They got a lot going on
- 19:16Speaker 5: on defense. With Venables, that's his specialty, Brent Venables, defensive guru.
- 19:21Speaker 5: But the offense, with Mateer healthy and Satania at wide
- 19:25Speaker 5: receiver and the other guys they brought in with the portal,
- 19:27Speaker 5: that could be a team that really exceeds expectations and
- 19:31Speaker 5: can't wait until the Red River rivalry against Texas. That's
- 19:34Speaker 5: going to be a heck of a game. Remember, Mateer
- 19:35Speaker 5: came back for that game, probably shouldn't have. So, yeah,
- 19:38Speaker 5: I think Oklahoma, because of Mateer and wine, the energy,
- 19:42Speaker 5: and Jim Nagy's doing a great job there as the
- 19:44Speaker 5: general manager of this Oklahoma Sooner program. formerly the senior
- 19:48Speaker 5: bowl in the NFL with John Schneider. in Seattle Jim
- 19:51Speaker 5: Nagy great evaluator talent what he's doing bringing in and
- 19:54Speaker 5: identifying the talent and then coaching them the way they
- 19:57Speaker 5: do and having material hopefully healthy all year I think
- 20:00Speaker 5: I'm more looking forward to seeing the Sooners than just
- 20:03Speaker 5: about any team in college football we'll.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Get to utensils in just a second if there's a
- 20:06Speaker 1: concern about Arch Manning do you have any concerns about
- 20:09Speaker 1: Arch Manning Mel He's got.
- 20:11Speaker 5: To be, Stu, that's more accurate. And he cannot be
- 20:15Speaker 5: in college football at 61%. And you can't be in
- 20:19Speaker 5: the 40s against some opponents like he was, one of
- 20:21Speaker 5: which wasn't even a good team. So, yeah, he's got
- 20:24Speaker 5: to get that at 70%. He's got now Cam Coleman
- 20:27Speaker 5: coming in from Auburn, a great receiver. He's got... Offensive
- 20:31Speaker 5: line fortified up front. He's got two transfers coming in.
- 20:34Speaker 5: Relief Brown and Hollywood Smothers at running back. There's no
- 20:37Speaker 5: reason why he shouldn't be at 70 plus percent. And
- 20:40Speaker 5: if he is, and he's more precise, more accurate, throwing
- 20:42Speaker 5: the football with his ability. Remember, Cooper Manning's his father.
- 20:47Speaker 5: Cooper was a wide receiver. This kid can run. Ten
- 20:49Speaker 5: rushing touchdowns more than any of these other highly regarded quarterbacks.
- 20:52Speaker 5: He can run. He's tough, smart. He's humble. I mean,
- 20:57Speaker 5: this kid, you know, he understands the hype, and he
- 21:00Speaker 5: deals with it, and he understands, hey, it's part of
- 21:03Speaker 5: the process. It's part of being a Manning. He embraces that,
- 21:06Speaker 5: but he's a humble kid who will keep working hard
- 21:08Speaker 5: But if he's precise and accurate, he'll be the number
- 21:10Speaker 5: one pick. If he's not, then Dante Moore will be.
- 21:15Speaker 5: Dante was at 72% last year, and people are still
- 21:17Speaker 5: critical of Dante Moore because of the struggles against some
- 21:20Speaker 5: of those top teams after he had that scintillating performance
- 21:23Speaker 5: against Penn State. So I think it's going to be
- 21:25Speaker 5: affirmed in Alidar with Stugatz and Mikey and Lance with
- 21:29Speaker 5: those two quarterbacks, Arch and Dante Moore. Maybe CJ Carr
- 21:33Speaker 5: in the mix to make it a three-horse race. But
- 21:35Speaker 5: it's going to be a lot of fun to see
- 21:37Speaker 5: if these quarterbacks, like I said, are they fantastic or
- 21:39Speaker 5: do they fizzle like they did last year in a
- 21:41Speaker 5: lot of cases?
- 21:42Speaker 2: He's the best guest we have. He really is. He's
- 21:44Speaker 2: just unbelievable. He's so good at this.
- 21:47Speaker 5: I've got a lot to keep up with with the
- 21:49Speaker 5: Mount Rushmore guys you've got coming on here with Timmy
- 21:52Speaker 5: Kirkjian and Sims and all the guys. Just try to
- 21:56Speaker 5: keep up with the competition. You've got to bring your
- 21:59Speaker 5: A-plus game here, guys.
- 22:00Speaker 2: They're trying to keep up with you, I've got to
- 22:01Speaker 2: tell you.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Real quick, before we get to utensils, when you think
- 22:04Speaker 1: of Elvis Presley, do you think of the city of
- 22:06Speaker 1: Memphis or Las Vegas?
- 22:09Speaker 5: For Elvis? Yes. I think Memphis.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Of course. Thank you.
- 22:13Speaker 5: Yep. Yeah. I think Memphis.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 22:15Speaker 5: I think Memphis. Yes. I think Graceland. I think Graceland. Yeah, automatic.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Give up.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Automatic. Mikey thinks Las Vegas, and I'm telling him it's
- 22:25Speaker 2: Wayne Newton.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Mikey, you're off base, pal. It's Elvis and Memphis.
- 22:31Speaker 2: That's it. If anyone can convince me, Mal. All right.
- 22:36Speaker 1: So last week we had a debate, Mal. Now, you
- 22:40Speaker 1: handle this however you want. If you want to do
- 22:43Speaker 1: analysis on each of the three utensils, Big boredom, however
- 22:47Speaker 1: you want to do it, okay? But the question that
- 22:51Speaker 1: was posed to us was, if you can only use
- 22:53Speaker 1: one utensil, a knife, a fork, or a spoon for
- 22:57Speaker 1: the remainder of time, and you could only use one,
- 23:00Speaker 1: which one would you use?
- 23:03Speaker 5: You know, it's crazy you bring it up because our
- 23:04Speaker 5: granddaughter's two. And for safety purposes, I would want Blakely
- 23:10Speaker 5: having a spoon only. Right. A spoon only for Blakely.
- 23:13Speaker 5: For me, they're saying for me. Right. For a child,
- 23:15Speaker 5: spoon only. Spoon. That's it. I don't like forks in
- 23:19Speaker 5: her hand. You know, that's how things happen. Throat, eyes,
- 23:22Speaker 5: I don't want a fork. I want spoon only. But
- 23:25Speaker 5: I get overruled because I'm an overprotective grandfather. But I'm
- 23:28Speaker 5: going to go to me. I can't have a knife.
- 23:30Speaker 5: You know what I've tried to do? I've tried to
- 23:32Speaker 5: eat with a knife. I mean, actually eat with it.
- 23:35Speaker 5: I've cut my lip so many times because the knife
- 23:38Speaker 5: was a little sharper than I thought. Of course. Some
- 23:40Speaker 5: are butter knives. Some are a little sharper. And I've
- 23:43Speaker 5: put it in and I've ripped Almost needing stitches, my lip.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Yes.
- 23:47Speaker 4: Want to know how I got these scars?
- 23:49Speaker 2: Yes. Knives are not supposed to go in your mouth, Mel.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Yes, correct.
- 23:52Speaker 5: I did it because I thought, oh, got a cut. Oh,
- 23:56Speaker 5: got a cut. Can't have the knife. No knife. Spoon
- 24:00Speaker 5: or fork. I think for cutting, you can cut better
- 24:04Speaker 5: if it's a nice fillet. You cut it with a knife.
- 24:07Speaker 5: You don't need a knife to cut a fillet. You
- 24:09Speaker 5: use a fork. Ice cream. I'm big into ice cream,
- 24:12Speaker 5: whipped cream. Fork works. You don't need a spoon for that, right? Yep.
- 24:15Speaker 5: I think the most versatile is a fork. Yes. For me. Yes.
- 24:21Speaker 5: I would go fork. Yes. Spoon. Not tough enough to
- 24:24Speaker 5: get through the steak. You know, crab cake you can
- 24:27Speaker 5: eat with anything.
- 24:28Speaker 4: Yes.
- 24:28Speaker 5: Ice cream, whipped cream, brownie, whatever you want to do there.
- 24:31Speaker 5: Pumpkin pie, everything I love. Fork. Hey, it could also be,
- 24:35Speaker 5: if you need it, you got somebody, you know, you
- 24:38Speaker 5: got a little danger in the area. Fork would work too.
- 24:41Speaker 5: So I'm a fork. I think fork is the most
- 24:46Speaker 5: personal of the three by miles. Fork for me, for
- 24:50Speaker 5: my little ones, I would say spoon, but for me, fork.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Mikey, he's bringing a fork to a knife fight. I mean.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Just don't bring it to a gun fight.
- 25:01Speaker 5: Hey, hey, hey. From a versatility standpoint, you cannot argue
- 25:05Speaker 5: with what a fork can do.
- 25:07Speaker 2: You're right. Yes, yes.
- 25:08Speaker 4: It does everything.
- 25:09Speaker 2: It does it all.
- 25:10Speaker 3: It's ironic that the Swiss Army knife is the fork.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 25:16Speaker 5: For me hey lance you listen to the to the
- 25:19Speaker 5: severity of my injuries with a knife anything like i've
- 25:24Speaker 5: had i'm serious it's been that's i cannot have a
- 25:28Speaker 5: knife and the spoon is just not strong enough to
- 25:31Speaker 5: do what i needed to do yes so you get
- 25:33Speaker 5: that nice fillet that melts in your mouth a fork
- 25:35Speaker 5: will be all you need.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Yes Uh, listen, Mel, you might be sick of the sun, uh,
- 25:40Speaker 2: but the sun looks great on you. You look fantastic.
- 25:42Speaker 2: You really, you really, you look great.
- 25:46Speaker 5: I mean, I've still got to do, I got to
- 25:48Speaker 5: dip the leaves out of the pool. You know, I
- 25:50Speaker 5: got to do stuff. I got to check on the landscape,
- 25:52Speaker 5: check on what flowers I'm going to bring in for
- 25:53Speaker 5: the winter. You know, you got to. The vincas have
- 25:55Speaker 5: to go. The pansies come in for the winter. The
- 25:57Speaker 5: vincas leave. Pansies come in because pansies are strong. They
- 26:00Speaker 5: get through the winter. The vincas are deer resistant, so
- 26:03Speaker 5: we get the nice vincas out there, which are phenomenal.
- 26:06Speaker 5: The colors of those. You want the best flower that's
- 26:09Speaker 5: the strongest and will last you, loves the sun. You
- 26:12Speaker 5: don't have to water it all the time. Just get
- 26:13Speaker 5: it established, and it will last from mid-April, late April
- 26:17Speaker 5: until June. Almost November 1st, then the pansies come in.
- 26:20Speaker 5: The pansies, by the way, last through the winter here
- 26:23Speaker 5: in the land of pleasant living here on Kent Island.
- 26:26Speaker 5: So that's what I do. I'm out there with the flowers,
- 26:28Speaker 5: out there with the pool. And, hey, I can't wait
- 26:32Speaker 5: until this 90-degree weather is gone. Hopefully we've seen the
- 26:35Speaker 5: end of it and we get football weather once and
- 26:37Speaker 5: for all here.
- 26:38Speaker 1: The next time we have you on, and I can't
- 26:40Speaker 1: have you on enough, can we do a flower draft
- 26:42Speaker 1: and you break down each of our picks as we're
- 26:44Speaker 1: making them?
- 26:45Speaker 3: Yes?
- 26:45Speaker 5: One of my favorites is the Nandina. If you want
- 26:48Speaker 5: something that has color through the winter, you look out,
- 26:51Speaker 5: looking great, summer, great, Nandina is the best.
- 26:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Mel Kuyper Jr., I don't say this to everyone. I
- 26:59Speaker 1: don't really say it to anyone.
- 27:01Speaker 2: I love you.
- 27:02Speaker 5: Hey, I said this is the triumvirate of greatness right here. Stugatz, Mikey,
- 27:08Speaker 5: and Lance. Come on. I'm just here as the fourth
- 27:11Speaker 5: guy to screw it up. That's all I can do.
- 27:14Speaker 5: You're messing with greatness here. Why the hell you brought
- 27:16Speaker 5: me on is beyond me, but I appreciate it, guys.
- 27:18Speaker 5: Anytime you need me, Mikey A., you never have to.
- 27:21Speaker 5: He always sends me to Stugatz. He always sends me
- 27:22Speaker 5: to stuff. When do you think you can film? Come on.
- 27:25Speaker 5: He sent me an email during the summer. I got
- 27:27Speaker 5: lost in the shuffle. I said, can you ever pick
- 27:29Speaker 5: up the phone? He never wants to talk to me.
- 27:31Speaker 5: He wants to email me.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I hate that.
- 27:32Speaker 5: Never picks up the phone and calls me, Mike. He's
- 27:34Speaker 5: too busy doing his dance at the game.
- 27:39Speaker 4: You know what it is? I call your house and
- 27:41Speaker 4: then it's like when I was a kid and I
- 27:43Speaker 4: had to call and be like, hi, is my friend there?
- 27:45Speaker 4: Can I talk?
- 27:45Speaker 5: Like, Mel, I got to talk to you. There's only
- 27:48Speaker 5: one other person in the house, and that's Kim. And
- 27:50Speaker 5: you're friends with her.
- 27:51Speaker 4: And she's wonderful.
- 27:52Speaker 5: She's a friend of the world. Without Kim, it wouldn't
- 27:56Speaker 5: be a me. I would never survive this long. Yeah,
- 28:00Speaker 5: Kim's always around. So yeah, Mikey, pick up the phone
- 28:03Speaker 5: because sometimes your emails get lost in a shuffle in
- 28:05Speaker 5: the summer.
- 28:05Speaker 2: The reason he doesn't give that number to me is
- 28:07Speaker 2: I'd call you every day, twice a day. How about that?
- 28:11Speaker 5: Bring it on, Stu Gantz. All right, Mel.
- 28:13Speaker 2: We love you.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Thank you for doing this. Lance is very thrilled with
- 28:16Speaker 1: all the shout-outs he got. Thank you.
- 28:19Speaker 5: Lance is great. He's a triumvirate of three. He's part
- 28:24Speaker 5: of the group here. I'm ready to say goodbye.
- 28:27Speaker 4: You're the greatest.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Thank you, Mel.
- 28:29Speaker 5: Have a great college and NFL season, guys. Enjoy it, man.
- 28:31Speaker 2: Oh, I'll talk to you before then. Thank you, Mel.
- 28:33Speaker 5: You got it, buddy. See you, pal.
