- 0:00So I'm going to the Christmas bar tonight.
- 0:02I'm excited for you, but also I'm not excited for you.
- 0:05I think this will be fine.
- 0:06I'll send you photos.
- 0:07I tried to go last year and it was like, so I had a meltdown immediately.
- 0:13Basically, you couldn't move.
- 0:15Oh, that's my worst nightmare.
- 0:16And it was all like finance bros and tourists.
- 0:20Absolutely not.
- 0:21So I'm hoping tonight is a little different and we're
- 0:23going to a couple of events.
- 0:24I'm just like, I like the nights where I'm just probably plus one
- 0:27'cause he just like bops me around to a bunch of different stuff.
- 0:30So that's what's happening.
- 0:31He's good at that stuff.
- 0:32Yeah, he's really good at that stuff.
- 0:33I'm, thank you Paolo.
- 0:35I am.
- 0:36I got very little work done today, but right before you came
- 0:39over I was writing about Holiday Touchdown A Bills Love Story.
- 0:44I saw that open on your laptop and I was really excited.
- 0:47Written by our very own Vanessa Marano.
- 0:49For some reason.
- 0:50Kind of, random, no offense Vanessa.
- 0:52Yeah.
- 0:53Is she historically a Bill fan?
- 0:56Yeah, that's what I wanted to know.
- 0:57So I started researching.
- 0:59Okay.
- 1:00And her, and she has a co-writer as well, and her and her co-writer were like, yes.
- 1:03We've made multiple trips to Buffalo to feel out the
- 1:06vibes and understand the fans.
- 1:08So they're also not from Buffalo?
- 1:10No, they're not.
- 1:11So yeah, random.
- 1:13That she's writing about the Buffalo Bills.
- 1:15That is extremely random.
- 1:16I, confession, really do wanna watch it.
- 1:19Why?
- 1:20I don't know.
- 1:20Okay.
- 1:21I love a bad movie.
- 1:22Okay.
- 1:23I support that, but also, I don't know anything about the Bills.
- 1:27I don't care about the Bills.
- 1:28Well neither did she before she wrote the movie.
- 1:29You know.
- 1:31Should we get to the show?
- 1:32Yeah, let's get to the show.
- 1:47Birthday episode.
- 1:48Birthday episode.
- 1:49This is one of your favorite episodes.
- 1:51Am I not mistaken?
- 1:52No, it is.
- 1:53Yeah.
- 1:53I love this one.
- 1:54I know you do.
- 1:55Okay.
- 1:56Season one, episode nine.
- 1:58This is the penultimate episode to the summer finale because apparently
- 2:03they had a summer finale and then they came back and they renewed for
- 2:0622 more episodes for season one.
- 2:09For season one.
- 2:11Networks now would never.
- 2:13No.
- 2:13Isn't that crazy?
- 2:15I know.
- 2:15A rewatch podcast of like a 2025 show is only gonna be six episodes.
- 2:20Season one, episode nine, Paradise Lost, released August 1st, 2011.
- 2:25Paradise Lost is originally a poem by John Milton about the temptation
- 2:29of Adam and Eve by Satan and their expulsions from the Garden of Eden.
- 2:33It's also a really good bar in the Lower East Side.
- 2:36Paradise Lost?
- 2:37That's a fun name for a bar.
- 2:39Do you have any idea why it's called Paradise Lost?
- 2:41Probably Regina Bayng like expelled temporarily at the
- 2:45beginning of the episode.
- 2:47Yeah, that's a good guess.
- 2:48And then.
- 2:50There's no wrong answer.
- 2:51It's actually kind of an odd choice of a name because
- 2:54I feel like more and more people are coming back together this episode.
- 2:58Right.
- 2:59Last episode would have been good for Paradise Lost.
- 3:02Agreed.
- 3:03They didn't have a painting name that encapsulated like awkward birthday
- 3:07dinner with your bio mom and your mom, that is mad at your bio mom, and
- 3:12also you're mad at everyone involved.
- 3:14And you're car shopping.
- 3:15And you're car shopping.
- 3:16And then you crash your car.
- 3:18And then your best friend is dating your sort of sister.
- 3:22Yeah.
- 3:23Yeah, exactly.
- 3:24Tough one.
- 3:25Tough one to do.
- 3:26It is.
- 3:27I think I just took it literally.
- 3:29My paradise lost.
- 3:30Paradise Bayng like the quote unquote harmony that the family had and
- 3:35now it's gone because of Regina.
- 3:36Yeah, and it's really bad.
- 3:38We open on this really cool alternate universe scene though.
- 3:42Yeah.
- 3:43Kathryn comes in the kitchen and who we think is Daphne is listening to
- 3:48music or doing something at the bar.
- 3:51She's doing something at the bar.
- 3:52And then Kathryn goes Bay.
- 3:54And we're like, Bay?
- 3:56And she doesn't respond at first.
- 3:57And you're like, well yeah.
- 3:58'cause she can't hear her.
- 4:00And it's because I think she was listening to music.
- 4:02I think she's like on her phone or something.
- 4:03I've been calling her New Bay or a Day and then New.
- 4:08New Daphne is Baphne.
- 4:10Oh good, okay.
- 4:11Yeah.
- 4:12Um, but New Bay or Day is hearing.
- 4:15Extremely jarring to hear Katie LeClerc's real voice.
- 4:17Yeah.
- 4:17That was crazy.
- 4:19And I was like, yep.
- 4:19Wow, she is really faking that deaf accent.
- 4:22This must have gagged audiences because they did not get a lot of
- 4:26press on the early season of the show.
- 4:29Yeah, they did not.
- 4:30So I think if you were watching for the first time, you were like,
- 4:33wait, Katie LeClerc is not like, I think people thought she was deaf.
- 4:38Yeah, that's a good point.
- 4:39Like what a twist.
- 4:41And they're kind of disappointing.
- 4:43Yeah, a bit disappointing.
- 4:44I do, I think.
- 4:45I think my friends and I, I remember we were watching and I was like.
- 4:49Wait, why does she sound like that?
- 4:50Why does she sound like that?
- 4:51Yeah.
- 4:52And then she is at Buckner and she spots New Bay or Baphne.
- 4:57She's at like a coffee shop.
- 4:59Yeah.
- 4:59'cause she's wearing the Buckner uniform.
- 5:00Yeah.
- 5:01And then she, which but still looks bad on her.
- 5:04I don't know what it is about the way they do it on Daphne.
- 5:07I'm sorry, Day, that makes it look so frumpy, but she looks frumpy.
- 5:12Okay.
- 5:12And it's the same uniform that Bay wears most days and it looks quite cute on Bay.
- 5:16But yeah, she pops outside and sees Baphne.
- 5:20Yeah.
- 5:20Sighing in with Regina.
- 5:21And she's wearing, did you know the hearing aids are on her ears incorrectly?
- 5:25I did not clock that.
- 5:26She has hearing aids in her ears, and then her hair is pushed so far
- 5:31behind her ears that like the things, the processers that go behind the
- 5:35ears are Bayng pushed up and away,
- 5:37and they're poking out.
- 5:39So they're not on her head correctly.
- 5:41It seems very uncomfortable.
- 5:43They wanted to make sure her audiences caught it.
- 5:45Exactly.
- 5:46Because like she has long, curly, gorgeous hair that would easily cover hearing aids,
- 5:51but they shoved her hair behind her ears.
- 5:53Could I just like put it in a bun?
- 5:54Yeah.
- 5:55A top bun.
- 5:56Yeah, literally.
- 5:57But no.
- 5:58And instead, um, Baphne is sim comming yet again.
- 6:01Some things have changed, but not the fact that Regina's gonna sim com.
- 6:04It's crazy.
- 6:05Um, and then.
- 6:07Day is with Emmett.
- 6:09Oh wait, yeah, no.
- 6:10Emmett pulls up.
- 6:11No, Baphne is with Emmett.
- 6:13I. We need to just call them by their normal names,
- 6:16Kara, this is stressing me out.
- 6:17You're right.
- 6:18I kept, as I was writing the notes, I kept getting confused.
- 6:21Yeah.
- 6:22Vanessa Marano's character.
- 6:24Vanessa Marano's character, uh, I guess is dating Emmett.
- 6:28Yeah.
- 6:28In this alternative timeline.
- 6:29Yes.
- 6:30So Emmett pulls up and vanessa Marano clocks that Katie LeClerc is staring
- 6:36at her as she's signing to Regina.
- 6:38She gets up, she goes to Emmett, she says, that girl won't stop staring.
- 6:42Emmett says, let's give them something to stare at.
- 6:46And then they kiss.
- 6:46They kiss and it's kind of tame.
- 6:48Yeah, it is.
- 6:49It's like not, it's like not as sexy as the kissing in the last episode even.
- 6:53It's because, um, she's deaf and Emmett has a thing for hearing girls.
- 6:58So it's not as hot for him.
- 6:59Yeah.
- 7:00But it's all a dream.
- 7:01Yeah.
- 7:01Real Daphne.
- 7:02The Daphne we know wakes up.
- 7:04Yeah.
- 7:05She wakes up and she's shocked.
- 7:08Yeah.
- 7:09And then we cut to Regina, who's staying at Melody's house, and Melody says.
- 7:14It's been 48 hours.
- 7:15Get the hell outta here.
- 7:16You gotta get outta here.
- 7:18Doesn't feel like that long.
- 7:19No.
- 7:20But at the same time, um, I also understand like the longer you stay
- 7:24away, I think the worse is gonna be.
- 7:26So you might as well just go and talk.
- 7:29But also two nights?
- 7:30I kind of disagree also.
- 7:32I think let the dust settle for longer than 48 hours.
- 7:36How long do you think is appropriate?
- 7:38I don't know.
- 7:39I mean, I guess with their birthdays coming up, it's like, well, you
- 7:42gotta figure this out before then.
- 7:44Maybe that's the incentive to go home.
- 7:46Well, that wasn't even her incentive.
- 7:47Melody was like, get the hell outta my house.
- 7:49Yeah.
- 7:49I think Melody just really wanted her space back.
- 7:51She was like, gimme the couch back.
- 7:53Also, they do have a river view.
- 7:55Did you know this?
- 7:56No.
- 7:57There's a view of the river.
- 7:58I don't know.
- 7:59You keep talking about this damn river.
- 8:00I don't.
- 8:00I keep not noticing.
- 8:01It's beautiful.
- 8:02Okay.
- 8:03It's behind the couch.
- 8:04Out the window.
- 8:05Okay.
- 8:06I'll go back and look.
- 8:07Yes, please.
- 8:08Oh, and yeah, there's sim comming.
- 8:10Yeah.
- 8:10Melody is deaf.
- 8:12She can't hear you.
- 8:13I don't know why Regina does that.
- 8:15We're gonna say this for the entire series, but I like, I really need
- 8:19to know why that choice was made.
- 8:21There had to have been someone who was like, no, the hearing
- 8:23audiences will like this.
- 8:24It's actually quite jarring.
- 8:26For Marlee Matlin?
- 8:27I, I don't get it.
- 8:29This is such a simcom heavy episode too.
- 8:31Because it's a Regina heavy episode.
- 8:33That's true.
- 8:33And those are basically synonymous.
- 8:35Well, Bay and Daphne's birthdays are coming up, and Bay really, really,
- 8:40really wants a Volkswagen car.
- 8:42I Googled this car.
- 8:43It's real.
- 8:44Yeah.
- 8:44It's so cute.
- 8:46It is.
- 8:46Do you like it?
- 8:47I love it.
- 8:48I think it's cute.
- 8:49Um, it's the Volkswagen Type 181.
- 8:52In the US, they called it The Thing.
- 8:54Yeah.
- 8:54Bay is like Daphne, they have to get us cars for our birthday because
- 8:58they got Toby a car last year.
- 9:00Therefore we get cars.
- 9:02Therefore we get cars.
- 9:03I'm all for equality, but it is crazy.
- 9:06Did you get a car for your 16th birthday?
- 9:08Well, 17.
- 9:09Is it 17?
- 9:10It's 17 in New York.
- 9:11No, no.
- 9:11I drove my parents' car to school.
- 9:14It was like my car, but, but also my parents also drove it.
- 9:17I wouldn't, I don't know.
- 9:18I always say it's my parents' car, but it was a spare.
- 9:21It was an extra car they had.
- 9:22Yeah.
- 9:23So there was a car dedicated to you in the driveway for you.
- 9:26To me and my brother, yes.
- 9:28I don't know, my brother couldn't drive yet.
- 9:29So yes, it was just me.
- 9:30Yeah.
- 9:30Let's be clear, your brother was too young.
- 9:33My brother was in middle school.
- 9:34Yes.
- 9:35I had a car that I drove to school.
- 9:37But you weren't gifted like a brand new car with a bow on it?
- 9:40No, none.
- 9:41Not at all.
- 9:42My mom had this car.
- 9:44She got the car and like.
- 9:45Don't be shy.
- 9:46What kind of car was it?
- 9:47This is not going on in the pod.
- 9:50Were you gifted a car?
- 9:51No, I learned to drive late.
- 9:53That's right.
- 9:54Like I got my license at 17, but I got my license and proceeded to not use it.
- 10:00And then I went to college, but then I came back to LA in the middle of
- 10:04college and I was like, oh fuck, I need to like actually be able to drive.
- 10:07We had two cars and my mom took one to work and my dad took one to work, but
- 10:12I went to school down near his work.
- 10:15Mm-hmm.
- 10:15So usually I would, he would drive down and I would drop him off at work and
- 10:21then take the car and go to school.
- 10:23And then pick him up at night.
- 10:25And then my parents offered to match funds with me and take some
- 10:31money out of my college fund.
- 10:32So like I paid half, they paid half.
- 10:35Okay.
- 10:35For a used car.
- 10:37It was a Fiat 508 , which they only sell in California and Oregon.
- 10:42Why?
- 10:43Because it's an electric car that can only go like a hundred miles on a charge.
- 10:47So there's so few places where it makes any sense to have one.
- 10:51Okay.
- 10:51So not a super practical one, but it's so cute and little and I was
- 10:55really bad at parking, so I was like, I want something really small that
- 10:58I can just like whip into any spot.
- 11:01Yeah.
- 11:01This one was only was my mom's work car and now it's my brother's for college.
- 11:06I don't know why she chose it 'cause it was way too big for the two of us.
- 11:10Yeah, it's a nice car.
- 11:11It's a nice car.
- 11:12There's issues with it.
- 11:14It doesn't have a lot of mileage, but still like some problems with the tires.
- 11:18I dunno.
- 11:19And that might have been my doing.
- 11:21So sorry.
- 11:21Sorry to my brother.
- 11:22Put some miles on that thing.
- 11:24Mm-hmm.
- 11:24Okay.
- 11:25Where are we at?
- 11:25Where are we?
- 11:27Okay.
- 11:27Car.
- 11:28Bay is fully signing.
- 11:29Yeah, Bay.
- 11:30It's like Bay signing about the car and Daphne's like, you are really good.
- 11:34What's going on?
- 11:35Then Regina comes back to the Kennish house.
- 11:40And they see her through the window like ugh.
- 11:42And Daphne goes upstairs to confront her.
- 11:44And Adriana is there.
- 11:46Yeah.
- 11:46So clearly she has been filled in and she has been holding down the fort.
- 11:50'cause Regina says, thanks for Bayng here, but I didn't love, Daphne comes
- 11:55in and is like, what are you doing here?
- 11:57And Adriana's like, Hey, respect your mother.
- 12:00I don't think what she said was disrespectful.
- 12:02She genuinely wants to know what you are doing here.
- 12:05She also, the last time they interacted, Daphne said, I want you to leave.
- 12:08And she hasn't gotten a call or a text or anything like not
- 12:13warning that she's coming back.
- 12:15Yeah, no heads up.
- 12:16So I think it's fair to walk in and say, what are you doing here?
- 12:19Also, it's only been 48 hours.
- 12:22And there's simcomming again.
- 12:23Daphne is furious and there's simcomming in two languages.
- 12:27Regina's like, I'm still your mother.
- 12:29You still have to show me respect.
- 12:31I hate that.
- 12:32I hate that shit.
- 12:33Yeah.
- 12:34Regina has to like climb off her high fucking horse with Daphne.
- 12:38She needs to be like, you're right.
- 12:39I fucked up.
- 12:40She, she doesn't fucking apologize for anything.
- 12:42Does she ever for this?
- 12:44I don't think she does.
- 12:45I think she refuses to like, she's very stubborn about it.
- 12:49Yeah.
- 12:49I think she's just like, I don't know.
- 12:51It's really damaging to their relationship, but, and Adriana's also mad.
- 12:55She's like, why the hell didn't you tell me?
- 12:57Yeah.
- 12:57I think Adriana would kept it a secret, I think.
- 13:00Well, Regina says, I didn't wanna implicate anyone else.
- 13:03That's fair.
- 13:03Which I think is fair.
- 13:04That's a lot to put on another person.
- 13:07Especially your mom.
- 13:08Yeah, and I think for, I'm glad for Daphne's sake that she didn't know.
- 13:12'cause again, for it to be a conspiracy where like everyone
- 13:14knows but you is really fucked up.
- 13:17Adriana was like, well I always assumed you cheated.
- 13:19She says, what did you think?
- 13:20Daphne was blonde haired and blue eyed.
- 13:22She's like, well, I thought Angelo was right.
- 13:24Yeah.
- 13:25I thought you cheated.
- 13:26But it's fine.
- 13:26'cause I love her.
- 13:27They would still be, Daphne would still be related to Adriana in that situation too.
- 13:32What do you mean?
- 13:33Like it doesn't really matter to Adriana if Daphne's dad is Angelo or not.
- 13:37'cause Angelo is just some guy to her.
- 13:39Oh yeah.
- 13:40I thought you meant like Bayng switched at birth, but that's not what you meant.
- 13:43Yeah, no, you're right.
- 13:44Daphne and Emmett are chatting and Emmett's like, girl,
- 13:48you gotta forgive your mom.
- 13:49What?
- 13:50Why is everyone pushing Daphne to forgive her?
- 13:52I know.
- 13:53Well, he didn't really say that.
- 13:55He said like she feels really bad and he said she's been sitting on the
- 13:59couch constantly for 24 hours a day.
- 14:01It's been 48 hours.
- 14:02It's been two days.
- 14:04Haven't seen much of it.
- 14:05You've been in school, you've been doing god knows what with Bay.
- 14:07Yeah, he hasn't been there.
- 14:08That's such a man thing to be like, well, I'm gonna play devil's
- 14:11advocate in this moment and be like, well, maybe you should forgive her.
- 14:14Right.
- 14:15What about the other side?
- 14:16And it's like, just be there for her.
- 14:18Just support your friend for once.
- 14:20Same thing as last episode.
- 14:22Like, he immediately goes, what about Bay?
- 14:24What if you told Bay?
- 14:25And mainly thinking about not Daphne.
- 14:28Interesting.
- 14:28Once she starts not having feelings for Daphne anymore and
- 14:32his attention is elsewhere, he is like way less of a friend to her.
- 14:36He is.
- 14:37Yeah.
- 14:38I worry.
- 14:38We're entering territory of like it's Emmett friend zone territory.
- 14:43I don't know.
- 14:45I don't love the way that feels.
- 14:46Anyway, John and Kathryn consult their lawyer and she's like, it would
- 14:51take more years to get custody then Daphne has until she's an adult.
- 14:56Right.
- 14:57The girls are gonna be 16 tomorrow.
- 14:59Yeah, it takes years to get custody.
- 15:00They will be adults by then, and if we like, you can evict Regina, but
- 15:05she has the right to take Daphne too.
- 15:07Personally, if I were Daphne in this situation and I couldn't reach a
- 15:11place where I could forgive Regina, I would just like get emancipated.
- 15:16You make it sound like it's easy.
- 15:17Is it?
- 15:18I don't know.
- 15:19I assume for someone with the full resources of the Kennishes
- 15:22behind them, it would be easier.
- 15:24What does it mean to be emancipated?
- 15:26It just means that your parent no longer has legal rights
- 15:30over you before you're 18.
- 15:31So like if they evicted Regina, she could be like, I'm gonna continue to live with
- 15:38them and you can't do anything about it.
- 15:40That's an interesting option.
- 15:42Like obviously that doesn't happen.
- 15:44No, but I was just thinking about like, what I would do.
- 15:48I don't, I also don't think Daphne wants, Daphne has not been like, yes, I want
- 15:52my parents to have custody of me now.
- 15:54No, not at all.
- 15:55She's just like, I just wanna stay there.
- 15:57Yeah.
- 15:58To sleep it off a little bit.
- 16:01Again, it's been two days.
- 16:02Yeah.
- 16:03It's also fresh.
- 16:04But yeah, I think that's, it's interesting to me that that never
- 16:07comes up as an option, just especially, I think Daphne could totally get
- 16:11emancipation because of Regina's track record as a mother, frankly.
- 16:16For sure.
- 16:16Do you think John and Kathryn would support that though instead of
- 16:19having them be her her guardian?
- 16:21Yeah.
- 16:21I wonder.
- 16:22I don't know if they would be super on board with that.
- 16:25I think John would, but Kathryn wouldn't.
- 16:28Okay.
- 16:28'cause she's much more empathetic towards Regina.
- 16:31Yeah.
- 16:31But yeah.
- 16:31And then Daphne goes to school and Melody also says, forgive your mom.
- 16:37Yeah.
- 16:37She does that chipper parent thing where she's like, how'd it go?
- 16:42Was it good?
- 16:42With that like signature, Marlee Matlin wide ass smile that she has.
- 16:47Like she did it 'cause she loves you.
- 16:48Yeah.
- 16:49She's like, she loves you.
- 16:50It's fine.
- 16:51And um, yeah, but they're at basketball practice.
- 16:55John is still the basketball coach.
- 16:57John is the basketball coach, but he's signing much more.
- 17:00Barely.
- 17:01Okay.
- 17:01Barely.
- 17:02But remember in the last episode how we were like, John
- 17:05hasn't been signing at all.
- 17:06He would still be impossible to understand considering the things he's saying.
- 17:11I, I would agree.
- 17:11And like the two signs he's doing in between.
- 17:13Agreed.
- 17:14I wonder what happened, I wonder if that was a character choice or if that was
- 17:17DW Moffett choice or not like choice, but if he wasn't picking it up fast
- 17:22enough to sign more, I don't know.
- 17:25Actually it makes sense for like a grown adult to like only know like a few signs.
- 17:30It's, you're slower to learn at that age.
- 17:32I mean, and they're all sports terms.
- 17:34Yeah, I, he's like offense.
- 17:36He does a sign for offense and team and that's kind of it.
- 17:40Um, he describes his new sign name.
- 17:43Oh, hard ass with a j. How do we, he didn't do it.
- 17:47He didn't.
- 17:48He just describes it.
- 17:49How would we visually, I like tried to do that.
- 17:52I have no idea.
- 17:54Would it be like a J on your butt?
- 17:56I did see that today and I was like, I don't even know the sign for hard ass.
- 18:01He just signed hard, but like maybe those are different.
- 18:05Exactly.
- 18:06I, like, started doing things, I'm like, that wouldn't be right.
- 18:09I dunno.
- 18:09Okay.
- 18:10There's determined, which is not really hard ass.
- 18:13Yeah.
- 18:14Anyway, love his imaginary new sign name, whatever.
- 18:17Yeah.
- 18:18Bay and Emmett are on a little lunch date.
- 18:20And they're going to eat the grossest burgers I've ever seen.
- 18:24They look like, um, like the Krabby Patties on SpongeBob, but like.
- 18:28I don't know.
- 18:29They just look really unappetizing.
- 18:30Well, Bay even says the food here sucks.
- 18:33Why are they there?
- 18:34To show the board.
- 18:35Yeah, the billboard.
- 18:36I feel that they could have been there without eating.
- 18:38They could have just like taken a walk, buy just a little soda.
- 18:41Yeah, no, the burgers look like shit.
- 18:43They look really bad.
- 18:44I do wanna circle back.
- 18:46Did you just describe them as gross and then compare them to Krabby Patties?
- 18:49No, it's not Krabby Patties.
- 18:51It was, um.
- 18:52Some other burger on SpongeBob.
- 18:55Oh, they make like a gross burger on SpongeBob, right?
- 18:58Yeah.
- 18:58It looks like the gross burger on SpongeBob, because I know crabby
- 19:01patties are supposed to be delicious.
- 19:03The Nasty Patty.
- 19:04Can I see?
- 19:05It looks like the Nasty Patty.
- 19:06You're so right.
- 19:07It totally does.
- 19:09Yeah.
- 19:09But they're, she's there to say, look what I did.
- 19:11I'm Axe Girl.
- 19:12She finally gets to drop the reveal that she's Axe Girl without
- 19:15Bayng cock blocked by Daphne.
- 19:17Yeah.
- 19:17I'm so glad we got here.
- 19:18'cause I feel like there were a few episodes where we, we weren't getting
- 19:21any of Bay's like art, street art side.
- 19:24That's true.
- 19:25Emmett is super supportive.
- 19:27He's very excited and she wants to quote bomb the billboard
- 19:32near Buckner for her birthday.
- 19:34That's the reveal.
- 19:35Yeah.
- 19:35And she asks Emmett for his help.
- 19:37Leave him out of it.
- 19:39That's also how I feel.
- 19:40She didn't need any help before Ty came along.
- 19:43Maybe.
- 19:43'cause this board is extra big.
- 19:45It's really high up that you need, it's a two person job.
- 19:48Yeah.
- 19:48I think she really just needs him there to hold the ladder, honestly.
- 19:51But later he does it by himself, which we'll get to.
- 19:54Yeah.
- 19:54And then back at practice, Daphne is trying to make her shots and this
- 19:58one girl keeps fumbling the ball.
- 20:00This team kind of sucks.
- 20:02I would be furious too.
- 20:03Yeah.
- 20:03I was watching it and thinking about you and Bayng like, I can't
- 20:07relate to this, but I bet Kara can.
- 20:10I played basketball from the ages of seven or eight to 17.
- 20:16That's a long time.
- 20:17So 10 years of basketball.
- 20:18Those girls suck.
- 20:20Daphne does a very easy throw to this girl.
- 20:23Fully drops it.
- 20:24And then next play throws the ball back to the same girl.
- 20:28She like shoots as if she's never thrown a basketball in her life.
- 20:31Yeah.
- 20:32And then, okay.
- 20:33I couldn't see what they were signing because the captions were
- 20:37blocking their signing captions.
- 20:40Oh, the caption, okay.
- 20:41Like the Hulu captions were blocking like the Switched at Birth captions.
- 20:45So the two of them exchange words, and then Daphne shoves her to the ground.
- 20:49Daphne comes up and says, can you make your shots?
- 20:52Okay.
- 20:53And this girl says, whatever, Kobe.
- 20:55And then Daphne shoves her to the ground.
- 20:57It is such a hard.
- 20:59Hard.
- 20:59It's so comical the way this girl falls.
- 21:02She like slides on her butt into the wall.
- 21:05She's fine.
- 21:06She's completely fine.
- 21:07She's fine.
- 21:08Kind of a dick thing to say.
- 21:10She also gets up in her face like Daphne's not looking to push her,
- 21:13and this girl gets up in her face as she's signing whatever, Kobe.
- 21:17Yeah.
- 21:17So I think it's that girl's fault.
- 21:19I kind of loved it.
- 21:20I loved it.
- 21:21I want Daphne to get in more physical altercations.
- 21:24Do you ever witness a fight at your school?
- 21:26No, it wasn't that kind of school.
- 21:28I only witnessed this fight once in middle school.
- 21:30See, I didn't go to middle school.
- 21:32I think that's when they mostly happened.
- 21:33Depends.
- 21:34Yeah.
- 21:35They're more at middle school for sure.
- 21:36It was in Spanish class and one kid said something really annoying to
- 21:39another and he punched him in the face.
- 21:42It was in class.
- 21:43It was like right before class started.
- 21:45Like the teacher wasn't in front.
- 21:47In the front yet talking to us.
- 21:48Did people circle around and start yelling?
- 21:51Oh yeah.
- 21:52Really?
- 21:53It happened in a blink of an eye.
- 21:55Whoa.
- 21:56But yeah, nothing happened after the punch.
- 21:57The kid, like ran away.
- 21:59Ran away crying.
- 22:00Damn.
- 22:01But he was notoriously known as Bayng this extremely annoying kid,
- 22:04so we were kind of like, nice.
- 22:07Sorry to him.
- 22:08Was he better?
- 22:08Was he better after that?
- 22:09Yeah, he's like kind of hot now.
- 22:11So maybe bullying does help.
- 22:13Yeah.
- 22:14And then Daphne comes home and Regina's, like, I heard you got in a fight.
- 22:18Not really.
- 22:19I think it's only a fight if the other person, if there's
- 22:21like, if she pushed her back.
- 22:24Would a fight be two shoves?
- 22:26I think a fight is like she, I feel for it to qualify as a fight,
- 22:30both parties have to engage.
- 22:32Yeah, that's true.
- 22:32And only one person engaged, which was Daphne.
- 22:35Yeah.
- 22:35So there was an altercation.
- 22:37There was an altercation at school.
- 22:39And.
- 22:40Simcom.
- 22:40Yeah.
- 22:41Regina Simcom Vasquez is like.
- 22:44You got in a fight?
- 22:45What's going on?
- 22:46Girl, we know what's going on.
- 22:47It's you.
- 22:48You're the problem.
- 22:48You're the problem.
- 22:50Which she, which John then says right after she pushes her.
- 22:53Melody says, that woman is her mother.
- 22:56Melody was pissing me off this episode too.
- 22:58I really don't like what they do with her character.
- 23:01I think she's justified about her like Bay hatred in this
- 23:03episode from her perspective.
- 23:05But.
- 23:06I feel for Bay.
- 23:07Yeah.
- 23:07And I'm also, as a teenager whose like boyfriend's family did not like me.
- 23:12I was like, yeah, I remember this feeling.
- 23:14And that like sucks for Bay, so.
- 23:15It's awful.
- 23:16Yeah.
- 23:17But yeah, Regina's like, and I'm here to work things out with you and Daphne
- 23:21says, I'm gonna live with my real parents.
- 23:23Ouch.
- 23:24I would wanna move into the Kennish House too.
- 23:26Honestly.
- 23:27It's so much swankier and um, the people there didn't lie about
- 23:30you Bayng switched at birth.
- 23:31Exactly.
- 23:32So, yeah.
- 23:33And then Bay is at Emmett's place and she's showing him the options, the like
- 23:38art rough sketches for her birthday.
- 23:40I was kind of, those sketches, there's, they look like they're
- 23:43drawn by a 7-year-old with crayon.
- 23:46With crayons.
- 23:46Yeah.
- 23:47And we know that Bay has that art studio with thousands of dollars of high quality
- 23:52supplies and this is the best she can do?
- 23:55I know they're rough sketches, but.
- 23:56They're not good.
- 23:58They're really, they're not good.
- 23:59I think this is like the, one of the only times we see the
- 24:02unfinished work of her street art.
- 24:04Yeah.
- 24:04This is the only time we see it.
- 24:05It's not good.
- 24:06Yeah.
- 24:07And then Melody comes in and she sees the two of them, you know, flirting
- 24:11and she immediately clocks something is going on with the two of them.
- 24:15Yeah, they have such a good exchange.
- 24:18She and Emmett have such a good exchange in front of Bay.
- 24:21I feel so bad for Bay.
- 24:23I like that Emmett's kind of signing behind her head so she can't even
- 24:28really see him, like the angle he's at.
- 24:30Mm-hmm.
- 24:30And which she wouldn't understand him even if it was right in front of her.
- 24:34But I also think Vanessa Marano does such a good job 'cause she goes up to Melody
- 24:40and it's like, hi, nice to see you.
- 24:42And Melody says, oh, it's um, really nice to see you.
- 24:45You look just like your mom.
- 24:47And then Vanessa Marano does this really great thing with her eyes go completely
- 24:50vacant, which is such an experience of like when you first learn to sign and
- 24:55like a fully deaf person signs at you.
- 24:58We've all been there.
- 24:59Yeah.
- 25:00And Vanessa Marano killed it.
- 25:01She got it.
- 25:02But she does this thing that drives me crazy and I also think it's kind of rude
- 25:07where she's trying to understand what Emmett and Melody are saying, but she's
- 25:11saying trying to translate out loud.
- 25:13It's also clearly not for her.
- 25:15They're not signing to her anymore.
- 25:17Also, well maybe keep it inside your head.
- 25:19Those are inside thoughts.
- 25:21Right.
- 25:22Well, they're for us.
- 25:23They're out loud for us.
- 25:24Agree.
- 25:24I know it's also hearing audiences.
- 25:26Oh yeah.
- 25:27But, and then.
- 25:28Melody says, how long have you guys been hanging out?
- 25:32And Bay is like, oh, I don't know what this means.
- 25:36And signs hanging out and Melody goes, oh, so funny.
- 25:39I don't know what this means either.
- 25:41She's so cunty to Bay.
- 25:43I feel so bad.
- 25:44I know.
- 25:45But it's so funny.
- 25:46Emmett's just like Bayng a teenage boy.
- 25:48He's like, why don't you get outta here?
- 25:50Why don't you go get us dinner?
- 25:51Thank you.
- 25:52Yeah.
- 25:53Um.
- 25:54Now we're back at the Kennish house.
- 25:56Oh yeah.
- 25:56And Kathryn and Daphne get to have this sweet mother-daughter moment.
- 26:00Yeah.
- 26:01They're raiding the fridge trying to figure out what to eat for
- 26:04like a midnight snack, I guess.
- 26:06Yeah.
- 26:06And they're both so dorky in the same way.
- 26:09It is.
- 26:09When they're signing about shrimp.
- 26:11Big bowl.
- 26:13I cringed.
- 26:13But good for them that they get to have each other.
- 26:16Daphne says, I eat shrimp.
- 26:18That's not vegetarian.
- 26:19Pescatarian, right?
- 26:21Yes.
- 26:21Yeah.
- 26:22Shrimp is not a vegetable.
- 26:23Shrimp are the roaches of the ocean.
- 26:25I like shrimp.
- 26:26I'm making shrimp tonight.
- 26:27I know you do.
- 26:29You like seafood in a way that concerns me.
- 26:31Okay?
- 26:32It's yummy and good for you.
- 26:33I know that's the popular opinion, but it grosses me out.
- 26:37We're back at Emmett's.
- 26:38I think Bay is gone now.
- 26:39Maybe she went home.
- 26:40Yeah.
- 26:40Bay has left.
- 26:41Emmett's not doing Bay any favors.
- 26:44'cause he's so unsubtle when Melody's like, Hey, so you guys are maybe
- 26:49dating and Bay is signing is bad.
- 26:52How are you guys even able to talk?
- 26:54Which is a fair question.
- 26:56Totally fair.
- 26:57Communication is so vital for any relationship.
- 27:00Yeah, and she's like, it's gonna be years before you guys can fully converse.
- 27:06Especially because again, Bay is not taking lessons.
- 27:09Emmett's just like teaching her, which is why Emmett later says,
- 27:12I'm gonna take speech therapy.
- 27:14Emmett's timing is so terrible.
- 27:16She's like, I'm concerned that you're changing for this girl.
- 27:19And he's like, and another thing.
- 27:20I'm gonna change for this girl.
- 27:22I'm gonna change for this girl.
- 27:24And Melody, as I would too, is having a heart attack.
- 27:27Yeah.
- 27:28He's never been interested before.
- 27:31Ever.
- 27:31Yeah.
- 27:32She understandably isn't happy.
- 27:34And then I was kind of just like, man, I wish they did not add a
- 27:37speech therapy storyline of like him changing for her, but maybe
- 27:41that also tracks with his character.
- 27:43I don't think he follows through with the speech therapy.
- 27:45No.
- 27:45He ends up gonna speech therapy at Carlton.
- 27:47I think he does it like twice.
- 27:49And then he's like, no.
- 27:51Okay.
- 27:51Yeah, you, I think he tries and then he's like, this is stupid.
- 27:54Maybe that's what he need to do.
- 27:55Yeah.
- 27:56Just outta curiosity.
- 27:57I think it's definitely solely for Bay, but then also could be like
- 28:01a curiosity as he becomes more exposed to the hearing world too.
- 28:06'cause Emmett's much more like, he's got two capital D deaf parents.
- 28:10Yeah.
- 28:11And also he's been interacting with the Kennishes more.
- 28:14Yeah, true.
- 28:15Who are fully hearing.
- 28:16So I think because he's hanging out with them and Toby and whatnot.
- 28:19I guess.
- 28:20I know I also, I wish it had just been full stop.
- 28:23I groaned when he mentioned the speech therapy thing.
- 28:26Yeah.
- 28:27He's going through it and then Melody says the statistic.
- 28:31She says the famous statistic, 85% of deaf hearing relationships don't work.
- 28:36Okay.
- 28:36This is not a real statistic, but I have heard this a million times.
- 28:40It's always like 85% or 90% of deaf hearing relationships or
- 28:44marriages don't work out or they don't last more than five years.
- 28:49How is that even calculated?
- 28:51I think mainly surveys.
- 28:53But I was trying to do a little research and I again, could not find that study.
- 28:58The only time someone mentioned it was from an article in the New York Times in
- 29:02the nineties about Deaf President Now, but that wasn't cited, so that's not helpful.
- 29:07And then someone was saying, someone did like their dissertation on deaf hearing
- 29:11relationships at some college, and he was saying that statistic specifically
- 29:15is based on Alexander Graham Bell's research on deaf hearing marriages.
- 29:20Fuck that man.
- 29:21Fuck that guy.
- 29:22Should we talk about that?
- 29:23He was very against deaf hearing marriages.
- 29:25Yeah.
- 29:25Or like just deaf people procreating at all.
- 29:28So he was like, God forbid they give birth to evil, quote
- 29:32unquote evil deaf offspring.
- 29:34So I think he kind of was like, well, it's never gonna work if they're together.
- 29:38And then I, he was also very into the segregation of deaf and hearing
- 29:41people and deaf people need to be segregated so they could learn English.
- 29:45Weren't both his mother and sister deaf?
- 29:47Yes.
- 29:48Um, Alexander, I hope you're having fun in hell.
- 29:51Yeah.
- 29:51The only other study I found was by Cochlear Americas.
- 29:55Okay.
- 29:56So a group that would have a financial benefit in promoting.
- 29:59Right.
- 29:59Okay, got it.
- 30:00Poop endorses pee.
- 30:02Like I don't.
- 30:03Even the current like statistic what like 50% of marriages end in
- 30:07divorce is like a warped statistic.
- 30:10How is it?
- 30:11I think that's also how I feel about like the deaf hearing marriages thing.
- 30:14It's such a small pool of people.
- 30:17Yeah.
- 30:17And also relationships end for all kinds of reasons.
- 30:20I think it's an extra barrier, but I don't think it's the sole
- 30:23cause of deaf hearing breakups.
- 30:26I say this as I have a hearing wife, so every time I hear the statistic I
- 30:30get, yeah, obviously we have a stake.
- 30:32I'm like, oh, don't tell me that.
- 30:34I mean, Emmett says in the show, he's like, just because you
- 30:37read, you got read the Yeah.
- 30:38Just 'cause you read that on the internet doesn't make it true.
- 30:41Work, Emmett.
- 30:42you're so right.
- 30:43And then Bay is.
- 30:45Exterior driveway back at the Kennish House.
- 30:48Ambushed.
- 30:48Regina runs at her jumps.
- 30:51It's scary.
- 30:52Jumps out of the shadows.
- 30:54They're like in the dark and she's like, please forgive me.
- 30:58And then she tells this really intense story about
- 31:01sneaking into Bay's piano recital when she was seven.
- 31:04And listen, I did tear up a little bit, but that doesn't mean that
- 31:08the story isn't also creepy.
- 31:10I think it's so creepy.
- 31:11She says, I snuck in and you were seven years old and you were trying to get
- 31:15a drink of water and I helped you.
- 31:17She's like, I wanted to snatch you away and bring you home with me.
- 31:21Then your mom came out and she took you back inside, and it's like,
- 31:25okay, so you almost kidnapped her?
- 31:27Is that supposed to be encouraging?
- 31:29I guess because she feels like Bay's hurt because Bay feels
- 31:33like Regina didn't want her.
- 31:34And that's exactly what she says.
- 31:36Like, but you didn't take me.
- 31:38It's not by being like, well, you didn't kidnap me, so fuck you, mom.
- 31:42You didn't commit a federal crime.
- 31:44Yeah.
- 31:44And then Regina turns around and goes to Kathryn and bulldozes
- 31:48her way into birthday plans.
- 31:50Yeah, like immediately.
- 31:51I don't know what about that interaction encouraged her to be like, you know what?
- 31:55I'm gonna show up for Bay's birthday.
- 31:57My girls clearly love me and adore me right now.
- 32:00And Kathryn's like, if it was just about me, I would include you.
- 32:04'cause Kathryn's being weirdly forgiving, but the girls don't want you here.
- 32:09And that's kind of it, right?
- 32:10Yeah.
- 32:10Kathryn tries to pretend that they don't have plans at all.
- 32:13Yeah, that's right.
- 32:14And then the next day the girls wake up and John's like, you guys feeling sick?
- 32:19'cause we're going car shopping and I told school you were sick.
- 32:22My parents have never done that.
- 32:24I've never played hooky.
- 32:26Oh, I played hooky so much.
- 32:27I got pulled into the office with my mom, senior year of high school.
- 32:33'cause they were like, she has too many absent days.
- 32:36Like if she takes another one, she won't be able to graduate.
- 32:39And my mom was like, what do her grades look like?
- 32:42And they were like, well, she has straight A's.
- 32:44And my mom was like, okay, so she's gonna graduate, right?
- 32:46And if she needs to take more days off, it's fine.
- 32:49Fuck you guys.
- 32:50And then they just let me continue to miss school.
- 32:52My parents would never.
- 32:55I think I would be pissed if I woke up and my parents were like, surprised
- 32:58you're not going to school today.
- 32:59Like it.
- 33:00That wouldn't work for me personally.
- 33:03But you know what?
- 33:04For them to be like, we're going to get you a car.
- 33:07That's totally fine.
- 33:08Bay is on top of the world.
- 33:09Oh, of course.
- 33:11And yeah, and we get the reveal of The Thing, the car that she wants.
- 33:14And I think it's crazy to get Daphne a car without talking to Regina.
- 33:19Especially that random, ugly car they pick out.
- 33:21It's a Volvo.
- 33:22It's so ugly.
- 33:23It's so boring.
- 33:24I hate just like a random gray car.
- 33:26Bay gets a, a cute, gigantic mess of a thing that's like, so her personality
- 33:32and Daphne gets a corporate gray ass car.
- 33:35Is that what Daphne wanted?
- 33:36No, I, John points out that it has good mileage and it's a good price.
- 33:40Yeah.
- 33:41Daphne doesn't really want one.
- 33:42She just kind of picks one at random.
- 33:44Right.
- 33:44And then they all pull up exterior driveway and Regina is waiting for
- 33:49them in the driveway and they're like, what the hell is this?
- 33:51What the hell?
- 33:52Melody said you weren't at school.
- 33:54That's kind of a scary call to get to be like, Daphne's not at school.
- 33:57That is scary.
- 33:58And then they all start fighting about the car.
- 34:01And Daphne's like, fine, I'll just return it myself.
- 34:04Fully backs up into Bay's brand new The Thing.
- 34:08This was crazy.
- 34:10I understand that they're all shouting and she's overwhelmed or whatever, but
- 34:14that doesn't make you just like fully back 10 feet into the car behind you.
- 34:19Don't you remember that Bay was behind you?
- 34:21You're like boxed in.
- 34:22I don't know.
- 34:23It's kind of like the episode where she's at Buckner after the cooking
- 34:27class and shes like so stressed.
- 34:28She's stressed out and she walks into the street and it's like, you're
- 34:32telling me that I'm supposed to believe that just because Daphne's
- 34:35like overwhelmed and stressed out,
- 34:37she's like, I'm just gonna not look where I'm going.
- 34:39Head down and walk right into the road.
- 34:42Maybe this is a Daphne thing.
- 34:43I guess she's loses her eyesight as well.
- 34:46Doesn't see cars.
- 34:47She's car blind.
- 34:49Doesn't see cars.
- 34:50Stress induced car blindness.
- 34:52Exactly.
- 34:53And her face is so funny after she hits the car.
- 34:57And then apparently it's $2,000 worth of damages.
- 35:01Yeah, it really doesn't look like it should be that much.
- 35:03That's, that seems very high.
- 35:05I'm sure Bay's car is fine because it was meant to be like a military grade tank.
- 35:09Yeah, it probably looks better with a little dent in the bumper.
- 35:12I know.
- 35:13So, yeah.
- 35:13And then Daphne's like in bed later and she's all emo
- 35:17about it and Kathryn comes in.
- 35:19And she doesn't see Kathryn right away when she comes in.
- 35:22Kathryn's right in front of her.
- 35:24This again, it's her.
- 35:25When Daphne's upset, she cannot see.
- 35:27I'll also feel the footsteps though.
- 35:29I always felt the footsteps of my parents walking down the hallway to my bedroom,
- 35:34even if I was sitting on the bed.
- 35:36But Daphne's in her own world and she's sad and she's like, I hate my
- 35:39birthday, and then I hate my mom.
- 35:40So, and then Kathryn is like, says to John like, we can't help Daphne.
- 35:45Like she needs Regina right now.
- 35:47I don't know if that's true.
- 35:48I don't know if she needs her mom.
- 35:51I think she needs her mom to stop acting this way.
- 35:54But anyway, and then Bay and Emmett are going to tag the billboard,
- 35:58but first they have a little convo where Bay's like, I think we need
- 36:02to tell Daphne that we're together.
- 36:03And Emmett's like, she's got a lot going on right now.
- 36:06This is actually the worst time to tell her.
- 36:08And he's right.
- 36:09I agree with him.
- 36:10I think, yeah.
- 36:12Can you wait a week?
- 36:13I think it would've been better to tell her immediate, like Emmett should have
- 36:17immediately been after she confronts him.
- 36:20Yeah.
- 36:21About liking Bay and then he goes and kisses Bay.
- 36:23He should have been like, Hey Daphne, you were right.
- 36:25That should have been the time.
- 36:26Yeah.
- 36:26That was the time.
- 36:27But that ship has sailed.
- 36:28And now I do think they should not tell her for a minute 'cause
- 36:31she's really going through it.
- 36:33I agree.
- 36:33And then they're climbing up to tag this billboard and
- 36:37this does not feel realistic.
- 36:38The cops like they hear sirens.
- 36:41The cops are showing up.
- 36:42They're pulling up.
- 36:43Yeah.
- 36:44They, the cops give chase.
- 36:46Yeah.
- 36:47And Bay and Emmett flee, and then they hide behind Bay's
- 36:50new military grade truck.
- 36:52Very recognizable if the cops were looking for them.
- 36:55It's a bright blue car.
- 36:56It just felt like, are they really going after street artists that hard?
- 37:00Maybe they are.
- 37:01Maybe, I don't know.
- 37:02Maybe it's a low crime area.
- 37:03True.
- 37:04But I also don't really believe that there would be like an
- 37:06abandoned billboard near Buckner.
- 37:08Right.
- 37:09Neither do I. It's for the plot.
- 37:11They hop like a barbed wire fence and the two of them cut themselves.
- 37:15Bay ends up cutting her hands and Emmett slashes his stomach.
- 37:19Yeah.
- 37:20Yeah.
- 37:20He just like throws himself over the fence.
- 37:22Yeah.
- 37:22You don't really see how he gets there.
- 37:25No, we just see him after that.
- 37:27He has a cut on his stomach.
- 37:28Yeah.
- 37:28And then it's the next morning, the girls' official birthday, and then Kathryn's
- 37:33made peanut butter pancakes, not knowing that Daphne doesn't like peanut butter.
- 37:37Peanut butter chocolate chip pancakes.
- 37:38Oh, excuse me.
- 37:39That sound really good.
- 37:41Sorry.
- 37:42But she doesn't like that.
- 37:43But also she asks, do you want syrup or whipped cream?
- 37:47Both.
- 37:48Who do you think I am?
- 37:49Is there a world where it's either or for people?
- 37:51I've never encountered that.
- 37:53I think you need both.
- 37:54Yeah, she said, was it like it's standard.
- 37:56Whipped cream is like.
- 37:57It goes on top.
- 37:58These pancakes are too dry with just whipped cream.
- 38:02Especially peanut butter ones.
- 38:03Yeah, that's true.
- 38:05Anyway, Daphne's wearing this long color blocked T-shirt.
- 38:09Yes.
- 38:09That I actually don't hate.
- 38:10Okay.
- 38:11But it does look like something a 35 year old should be wearing.
- 38:15That's her wardrobe really.
- 38:16She says, sorry about the car.
- 38:18And then John and Kathryn say, whatever.
- 38:20Whatever.
- 38:20We love you.
- 38:21It's your birthday.
- 38:22And then Bay walks in and she's wearing all black and yet
- 38:25another cropped gray blazer.
- 38:26Yep.
- 38:26But a different one than the last one.
- 38:28And she has so many cropped gray blazers in that closet.
- 38:32Yes, she does.
- 38:33She's got a rotation.
- 38:34And Kathryn is like, what happened with your hands?
- 38:37She's like, girl, I don't wanna talk about it.
- 38:39Something with the rose bushes.
- 38:41Yeah.
- 38:41That was a bad lie, but they stop asking.
- 38:43Yeah.
- 38:43Kathryn doesn't, does not follow up.
- 38:46They're just so excited.
- 38:47'cause they have the little birthday hats on the table for the girls and
- 38:50they wanna take a photo and, and it's also the two girls' birthdays
- 38:53together for the first time.
- 38:55First time.
- 38:56And Bay's like, no matter what they say to you, you do not have to wear the hat.
- 39:00And a second later they are wearing the hat.
- 39:02It's cute.
- 39:02It's really sweet.
- 39:04And they won't eat the pancakes.
- 39:05No.
- 39:06Your mom made you this beautiful breakfast.
- 39:07This, the reasoning behind it is one, if you ever see food on tv,
- 39:12it's been sprayed with chemicals to keep it looking like hot and fresh.
- 39:17Mm-hmm.
- 39:18And the chemicals are so up close, like it's inedible.
- 39:22I was in a lot of like dinner scenes.
- 39:24Oh yeah.
- 39:24When I was a background actor.
- 39:26So we would just like have food in front of us that was like basically
- 39:30sprayed with like plastic coating.
- 39:32Wow.
- 39:33Okay.
- 39:34The more you know.
- 39:34So most of the time if you see food on a set, it's actually not edible.
- 39:38But yeah, they really skip the birthday breakfast.
- 39:40And then at Emmett's, Melody has found this really intense, gigantic bandage.
- 39:47It looks like a pad.
- 39:48It almost looks like a diaper.
- 39:50It is comically large.
- 39:52I was like, oh, did Bay get her period?
- 39:54She should have lied and said that.
- 39:56That would've been a great lie.
- 39:57That would've been way better than what he says, which is, oh yeah.
- 39:59I cut my stomach playing football at my friend's house.
- 40:02Yeah.
- 40:02He like fell on a sprinkler at his friend Jackson's house and Melody's
- 40:06like, so, I know you're lying.
- 40:08She sees, it doesn't look like he ever cleaned it, which is on him.
- 40:12You should be cleaning your wounds.
- 40:14No, it looks better.
- 40:15He's a boy.
- 40:16You have to clean your cuts, guys.
- 40:17You can get an infection.
- 40:18Fellas, is it gay if you clean your wounds?
- 40:21And Melody rightfully is like, what the hell is that?
- 40:24And the lie doesn't go that well, but he's just like, we're gonna
- 40:27be late for the birthday party.
- 40:29And she immediately connects the dots because they go to the Kennishes.
- 40:32Bay answers the door, and she has cuts on her hands.
- 40:34Yeah.
- 40:35Melody's like, ding, ding, ding.
- 40:37Bay did this.
- 40:38She pulls Emmett aside immediately.
- 40:40She's like, so what are you guys into rough sex?
- 40:42Are you cutting each other?
- 40:43And he's like, mom, oh my God, nothing happened.
- 40:48And then he's like, I'm not gonna tell you because you already hate Bay.
- 40:52And she's like's like, yeah, clearly for good reason.
- 40:55I see both sides of this.
- 40:57I think she's like, you're sneaking around.
- 40:58Yeah.
- 40:58You are lying and you're coming home with like cuts and bruises.
- 41:01Yeah.
- 41:01I think when it starts to be a safety issue, like I think she's,
- 41:05she has fair reason to be worried.
- 41:07I also think that Bay is like such a sheltered person and like
- 41:12doesn't understand how other people move through the world still.
- 41:15We saw this a lot with Ty and so I think that Melody's right to be like,
- 41:20this girl is not going to accommodate.
- 41:22She's making you bend to what she wants.
- 41:26And also you are getting someone involved in something criminal.
- 41:30Yeah.
- 41:31Which we will see later on.
- 41:34Yeah.
- 41:35But like a deaf boy in the criminal justice system, it does not go well.
- 41:40Bay hasn't faced any consequences.
- 41:42And I think she thinks he's also exempt.
- 41:44She's just like not thinking about it.
- 41:47So yeah.
- 41:47Melody's like, I don't like that girl.
- 41:49And do you see what Bay's wearing?
- 41:51It's like a dress situation.
- 41:53It's very, she's wearing a jumpsuit.
- 41:55It's a zipper jumpsuit.
- 41:57No it's not.
- 41:57Yes, it is.
- 41:58What?
- 41:59I think.
- 42:00I don't think it is.
- 42:00I think it's like a sweater dress.
- 42:02But it has zippers all over it.
- 42:03Yeah, it has zippers all over it, but I don't think it's a jumpsuit.
- 42:07Oh God.
- 42:08Is it a jumpsuit?
- 42:09No.
- 42:09Sorry.
- 42:10I got distracted.
- 42:11I'm looking at this photo of Daphne from the Wiki fan page.
- 42:14Bright teal dress.
- 42:16Strutting her stuff.
- 42:17It's like a sweater dress situation.
- 42:19I'll look it up.
- 42:20When I screenshot photos from the episode, but it's, um, it's not good.
- 42:25No, it's not.
- 42:26None of the looks are good.
- 42:28It's birthday dinner time.
- 42:29Yeah, it's cake time.
- 42:30I just thought it was interesting how everyone was anticipating
- 42:33this giant party, but it's just a small dinner with no other people.
- 42:37I know that, again, budgets are small.
- 42:40Nobody in this situation has any other friends.
- 42:42The parents aren't like, where's Simone?
- 42:44Bay's best friend that she's always hanging out with.
- 42:47Don't have the budget for Simone yet.
- 42:48But Regina walks up and she's like, I've never missed any of Daphne's birthdays and
- 42:53now I'm not gonna miss any more of Bay's,
- 42:55which is sweet.
- 42:56Yeah.
- 42:57And Bay agrees.
- 42:58Yeah.
- 42:58John's like, I'm not okay with this.
- 43:00And Bay's like, I want her here.
- 43:02And I really appreciated, John was so ready.
- 43:04He was like winding up to go off and Bay was like, says, I want her here.
- 43:08And he just stops.
- 43:09He goes, okay, great.
- 43:10And then we get a very silent birthday stretch.
- 43:16Where they're all just like eating cake and no one's really talking.
- 43:20But then Kathryn comes up and gives a really sweet speech.
- 43:23Third time in the episode that I teared up.
- 43:2516 years ago, I gave birth to a beautiful girl and I brought
- 43:29home another beautiful girl.
- 43:31She said she feels lucky.
- 43:33Yeah.
- 43:34And then Bay's like, okay, let's do presents, which she says, presents plural.
- 43:39But because the Kennishes already got them both cars, it's just Emmett.
- 43:43It's just Bay opening a gift from Emmett and then Daphne
- 43:45opening a gift from Emmett.
- 43:46Nothing from Adriana or Toby?
- 43:48No Toby.
- 43:49No.
- 43:49Just the car and then whatever Emmett's got going on.
- 43:52And Emmett, yeah.
- 43:54Bay opens the gift and it's a scarf and the card that just says
- 43:59from Emmett.
- 44:00You should have like prepped her for this.
- 44:02Like beforehand.
- 44:03But like, just so you know, your present isn't your real present.
- 44:06She's so disappointed as I would be too.
- 44:09Yeah.
- 44:10This is, I hate opening presents in front of like groups of people.
- 44:14No, and I also don't like, especially growing up when I
- 44:17would go to birthday parties.
- 44:18Yeah.
- 44:18I don't wanna watch someone open their presents either, because growing up I
- 44:22would one, either be really jealous or two, feel weird if they didn't like my
- 44:27gift or like, oh, I already have it.
- 44:29And I'm like.
- 44:29Well, that's insane.
- 44:30Their parents should have told them not to say that.
- 44:33I know.
- 44:33I remember once, just some sleepover, I must have been like seven or eight,
- 44:38and the girl opened the gifts in front of everyone and for other people
- 44:42she was like, oh my God, I love it.
- 44:44I've always wanted this.
- 44:45And then she opened mine, which my parents probably got from Toys R
- 44:48Us, and she was just like, oh, okay.
- 44:52That's nice.
- 44:53She said, okay?
- 44:55I, it wasn't that exact wording.
- 44:57I don't remember what it was, but she was just like trying to be
- 44:59nice about it instead of being so excited like she was with the others.
- 45:04And I was like, well, this is stupid.
- 45:06I hate opening gifts in front of people also.
- 45:09Me too.
- 45:09Because I feel like I have to perform an emotion that they want.
- 45:13Christmas is the worst day ever for me.
- 45:15I have to open all these gifts and be so thrilled about all of them.
- 45:19Yeah.
- 45:19The only person I ever wanna open gifts in front of or I want to watch open gifts
- 45:23is Paolo.
- 45:24Same with A. Yeah.
- 45:25Just because I'm like, I'm not faking it, you know.
- 45:29Otherwise, even when I get someone a gift I'm really excited about, if
- 45:32they're like, I'm not gonna open it in front of you, I'm like, that's so fair.
- 45:35Yeah.
- 45:35I respect it.
- 45:36So then it's Daphne's turn and she is cracking up at the card
- 45:41that Emmett has written for her.
- 45:43Cracking up.
- 45:44She's like, oh my God, you didn't.
- 45:46And she opens it and it is a signed copy and poster of Deafenstein.
- 45:50Deafenstein, not Deafula.
- 45:52Yeah.
- 45:53Callback to our last episode if you've listened.
- 45:56This is inspired by Deafula.
- 45:59Yes.
- 46:00Deafenstein an ASL horror movie with deaf people from the seventies, I guess
- 46:05and it's really bad.
- 46:06Yeah.
- 46:07And Daphne and Emmett are obsessed with it.
- 46:10Yes.
- 46:11And he reveals that six months ago he drove to Springfield to
- 46:16a horror convention to get the.
- 46:19150 miles away.
- 46:20Yeah.
- 46:20To get the creator, the filmmaker, to sign it, or the director or someone.
- 46:24Charles Danes.
- 46:26Yeah.
- 46:26It's to get Charles Danes to sign it.
- 46:29She also got her t-shirt.
- 46:30It's a whole Deafenstein fan package basically and she is stoked.
- 46:36Head over heels.
- 46:37She's so excited.
- 46:39And then we basically cut immediately to Bay sulking in her art studio
- 46:44and he, Emmett comes in and she's like, thanks again for the scarf.
- 46:48The way she says scarf in this episode.
- 46:51She's like, it's a scarf.
- 46:53Yeah.
- 46:53So she's like trying to be positive.
- 46:56And he's like, just kidding.
- 46:57It's a blindfold.
- 46:58I have chills.
- 46:59Yeah, it's a blindfold and she's like, what?
- 47:01Kinky.
- 47:02That was my first thought also.
- 47:04And then he puts it on her and we do, we get this little like spin shot, a
- 47:08little dolly shot on the camera and it spins and suddenly they're in the
- 47:13parking lot looking up at her piece.
- 47:15I have a question for you.
- 47:17I have a million questions.
- 47:19My first thought was, do we think that he blindfolds her and then walks
- 47:24her all the way out of the Kennish House to his motorcycle or car?
- 47:28And then drives them while she's still blindfolded?
- 47:31Or do you think he's just like puts it on and then is like, ha ha, okay, let's go.
- 47:35And then like they take it off and they leave.
- 47:37Like how do they exit the Kennish House?
- 47:39But when they transport to the next scene at the billboard,
- 47:42she takes off the blindfold.
- 47:43Exactly.
- 47:44Implying that she's been wearing this blindfold the whole time.
- 47:47The whole time.
- 47:48I would be so dizzy.
- 47:50Not only would I be dizzy, but like,
- 47:52is no one else around?
- 47:53Where's Melody?
- 47:54Like no one else has clocked the, I don't know.
- 47:56I would have questions.
- 47:57I feel that leading a blindfolded Bay out of the Kennish house on her
- 48:01birthday would provoke questions.
- 48:03I agree.
- 48:04From other members of the family.
- 48:06I like to think he blindfold her, put her on this motorcycle,
- 48:08drove to however far the parking lot is.
- 48:11Yeah, and then she took it off.
- 48:13It's a local high school, so maybe like a 10, 15 minute trip.
- 48:17Yeah.
- 48:17Also the Kennishes still don't know that Bay's been riding
- 48:20around on Emmett's motorcycle, so can't wait for that to blow up.
- 48:24May they're all in bed.
- 48:25I don't know.
- 48:25No, because Regina and, uh, Regina and Kathryn are outside cleaning up.
- 48:29Yeah.
- 48:29Anyway, they get there.
- 48:31The big reveal is he has put Bay's art up on the billboard by himself somehow,
- 48:36even though she was gonna need help.
- 48:38One, how do you get up there by yourself?
- 48:40Two, he doesn't, how would he know how to spray paint that?
- 48:44It's stencil based, right?
- 48:46But where'd he get the materials?
- 48:48So true, actually.
- 48:49You're right.
- 48:50How would he know how to do that?
- 48:52And it looks great.
- 48:53I think it's Bay's best.
- 48:54It's fantastic.
- 48:54It's Bay's best work.
- 48:56Yeah.
- 48:56It's a picture of a girl blowing out candles on a cake, but
- 49:01the candles are made dynamite.
- 49:03Yeah.
- 49:04And it's pretty good.
- 49:05It's cute.
- 49:05Like it's one, I think it's my favorite.
- 49:08Does it qualify as Axe Girl?
- 49:09Like it's my favorite Axe Girl variation that we see.
- 49:11Yeah.
- 49:12I agree.
- 49:12But yeah, she's like, wow.
- 49:14And then he's like, and I'm sorry, I haven't told Daphne about us yet.
- 49:17And she said, it's okay.
- 49:18She says It's okay.
- 49:19And then, yeah, she's like, I think it would be better coming from me.
- 49:22No, it wouldn't, girl.
- 49:23No, it wouldn't.
- 49:24It definitely wouldn't.
- 49:25Yeah.
- 49:26And then back at the house, Daphne is sitting in the car in
- 49:30sulking, and Regina comes in and is like, I have a gift for you.
- 49:36And it's just like.
- 49:38It's a bunch of recipes that Daphne cooks and then takeout menus.
- 49:43And cereal box tops.
- 49:44And cereal box tops.
- 49:46What the fuck.
- 49:47I know that the point of it is like Regina's so bad at gift giving.
- 49:51She did look like she scrapbooked it and made it with a lot of thought in it.
- 49:56So I was like, it's so mean when Daphne's like this is the worst birthday
- 50:00person ever but also she's not wrong.
- 50:02Especially 'cause she's mad at her mom right now.
- 50:05This is an insane thing to be like.
- 50:07And by the way, on the day that you got a car from your other parents
- 50:10who you're not mad at, I'm giving you a bunch of pieces of paper.
- 50:13Here is literally garbage in a box that I've glued together.
- 50:17Yeah, you couldn't do better?
- 50:19Get her like a gift card.
- 50:21And then Regina's like, and I think you should keep this car.
- 50:24Yeah, that was kind of it.
- 50:25I'm like, okay, whatever.
- 50:27Girl.
- 50:27Well, Daphne already dinged it, so.
- 50:30True, they can't give it back now.
- 50:31Nope.
- 50:32And Daphne's like, I've been trying really hard to forgive you, but I
- 50:35just keep getting mad all over again.
- 50:37It's been like three or four days.
- 50:39Yeah.
- 50:40Give it a second.
- 50:41Give it some time.
- 50:42I guess from there she decides to go back to her room in the Kennish house.
- 50:48Yes.
- 50:48And she's watching Deafenstein and she is cracking up.
- 50:53And like not even a funny part, it keeps cutting to Deafenstein and it's
- 50:56like someone walking, she's like, oh my god, this is the funniest thing.
- 51:00It's Deafenstein like chasing after someone.
- 51:02It's like not a funny part of the movie and it, I don't know.
- 51:06It was really, she is hackling just by herself.
- 51:10Laughing it up and then Bay comes in to quote check on Daphne.
- 51:15But really, I think she was trying to be like, Hey, tell her,
- 51:18let me tell you about Emmett.
- 51:19It's her birthday.
- 51:21Can you wait till next morning?
- 51:22Yeah.
- 51:23Yeah.
- 51:23She's like, I'm gonna tell you something.
- 51:26And Daphne's like, I'm actually having such a good day.
- 51:29'cause I realized there's someone who's been here for me this entire time.
- 51:33And it's not just my mom.
- 51:34And it's not my traitor mom.
- 51:36It's Emmett.
- 51:37And Bay's like, oh, like you have feelings for him?
- 51:40And Daphne goes, maybe.
- 51:42Girl, maybe?
- 51:43End of episode.
- 51:44And that's the end of the episode.
- 51:46But also maybe?
- 51:48After that gift?
- 51:49When he's clearly been in love with you forever and you're
- 51:52like, I don't know, maybe.
- 51:54He drove hours to get this poster signed for you Yeah.
- 51:58If that's not enough, then no, I think you don't have feelings for him.
- 52:01I think that's evidence that you don't.
- 52:02Right.
- 52:03Maybe?
- 52:04So that's the end of the episode.
- 52:07Yeah.
- 52:07Love triangle.
- 52:08Usually when there's a love triangle in a show or a book or movie, anything,
- 52:13my solution is that everybody kiss.
- 52:15But since Bay and Daphne are kind of proxy sisters, I guess they shouldn't kiss.
- 52:19No, they shouldn't kiss.
- 52:20No kissing for them.
- 52:22Or like Emmett has sister wives.
- 52:23I always thought it was odd that sister wives don't also make out with each other.
- 52:27We don't know that for sure.
- 52:29Yeah, but we can't, like, it yeah traditionally they don't.
- 52:32Yeah, probably not.
- 52:33No.
- 52:33I remember watching Sister Wives growing up on TLC and being like, what is the
- 52:36point of being all married to the same man if you're not also gonna kiss?
- 52:41Also I'm queer, so that's probably part of it.
- 52:44But I was like, this doesn't make sense to me.
- 52:46Why aren't these beautiful women kissing?
- 52:47Yeah, I get it.
- 52:49As someone who's also watched like nearly every episode of Sister Wives.
- 52:53Such a good show.
- 52:53I know they've like all divorced him.
- 52:56Yes, they've all left him except Robyn.
- 52:58Yeah.
- 52:58The success rate for sister wives is so much lower than the success
- 53:01rate for deaf hearing relationships.
- 53:03So why don't they come at them more?
- 53:06Yeah.
- 53:06Leave the deaf and hearing marriages alone.
