Latest / Mental Health and the Mission of the Church / Anchored in Trust: More on Chip’s Health Journey
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: This is Britney Gardner, friend of Chips, and honored to be the bearer of some very good news.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: Chip recorded this conversation with Pastor Greg and Joey on Wednesday, November 20th.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: Part of the point of the episode was to update folks on some new developments concerning Chip's health and pray for him as he waits on test results about a possible liver condition that could potentially keep him off the lung transplant list for good.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Well, since they recorded, he got the news we were all looking for.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: No obstacles posed by the liver, and he's been approved to get on the lung transplant list.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: We are thrilled beyond words.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Trust in the Lord with all of your heart, upon your own understanding, in all your ways.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Acknowledge him, and he will make your path straight.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: We're trusting God from day one.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: I think it's helped me rethink in my head what that means.
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: Back when I cut my teeth in the what we call the word of faith movement, we would just take scripture and face back, which I still do.
- 0:57SPEAKER_04: Five strides were healed, those kind of things, and I believe that.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: But at the same time, I've been a pastor for over 40 years, and I sure very much there are people that were praying.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: Now, I don't mean that it might not be God's will.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: All I'm saying is we came out of the movie and Chip is waiting on Colleen.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Couldn't breathe.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: I saw at that moment how serious it was.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: And I saw him also not wanting to frighten his wife.
- 1:25SPEAKER_02: We stood and talked for quite a bit until he was breath.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: So you know the journey he's been through.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: Last night he called me uh right after they talked to the surgeon, and we talked for a while.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: I went uh to my own place to shed some tears.
- 1:40SPEAKER_04: Just I'm like, land of the living?
- 1:47SPEAKER_04: That's weird.
- 1:48SPEAKER_04: Then I remembered scriptures about promises that this or that is something you're gonna experience, but not over yonder in the land of the living.
- 1:57SPEAKER_04: Okay, that didn't feel like me.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: It starts to turn my emotions, you know, in a good way.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: And then I heard the phrase, in the palm of my hand.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: You're in the palm of my hand, nothing can touch you.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: That question a minute ago, Joey, about if you knew your time was short, you know what needs to motivate us?
- 2:17SPEAKER_04: It's just walking around watching people when you see the pain around you.
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: That doesn't motivate you.
- 2:23SPEAKER_04: Shut up and go get saved again.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you would like to help in addition to your prayers, we've left all caring bridge and go fund me information in the show notes.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: We'll keep cranking out episodes with Chip, and he'll keep continuing updating us on all of his health and teaching the world how to live well and finish strong.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Happy Thanksgiving and keep our guy in your prayers.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: There he is.
- 2:54SPEAKER_04: All right, Joey.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: I know one thing for certain.
- 2:58SPEAKER_03: Pastor Greg Surratt is with us and he's he's got things muted up because he is en route to a landing place to be able to engage in this conversation.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: He's on sun duty, taking his father somewhere.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: I just want to say the obvious, the two guys that are hanging out right now with Pastor Chip love him very much.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: And I think we could both say our lives wouldn't be the same without him.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: And I know this is the case for so many of you watching live and others who are listening to the podcast.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: I'm Joey Svenson, one who considers Chip a mentor, pastor, counselor, and friend.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: I'm also here, like I said, with Pastor Greg, who I love this guy as well.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: He's the founding pastor of Seacoast.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: And in many ways, Pastor Chip and Pastor Greg have been partners in crime the last few years, writing a book together called The Endurance Factor.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: They're both driven to see many people around the world, as many as possible, live well and finish strong.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: They both work with thousands of leaders and pastors specifically as well at a retreat in Charleston, South Carolina, and online at the Pastors Collective.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: And we'll have all those links.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: So, Chip, you've kept some folks, very few, in the know on your help from the beginning of your diagnosis, but recently, due to your need for oxygen out in public, it's public knowledge now.
- 4:21SPEAKER_03: If I am correct, you left folks as of most recent that you have uh see if I can say this right, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, where we left off on this podcast, and then just what you've been communicating with people, you'll need either a miracle healing, a new lung, and you know, for medicine and technology to bring you back to a place of health, or uh your time on this earth is wrapping up.
- 4:50SPEAKER_03: Would you say that that's fairly accurate?
- 4:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the way I said it on the on a another podcast we did was um I affectionately recalled it door number one, two, and three.
- 5:00SPEAKER_04: And door number one is Jesus wonderfully, kindly, miraculously healing me.
- 5:06SPEAKER_04: Door number two is I would say another miracle of sorts, and that is a lung transplant by the medical professionals uh at Medical University of South Carolina, who have been great, by the way.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: And then the third door is neither of those happens, and the prognosis is not good.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: Well, currently you're in some new territory that is fresh as of yesterday, which yesterday was November the 19th.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: So what's going on as of recent?
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: Obviously, we want to get into everything, including how your piece is, but give us an update.
- 5:46SPEAKER_03: What's the big news that you and Colleen and your kids are processing right now?
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: I'll back up a little further, Joey, just for those that haven't caught any of the other communications that we've done.
- 5:58SPEAKER_04: We've known there was a problem for about eight years.
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: It was officially diagnosed and began to be treated somewhere around six years ago.
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: We kind of had a pretty good idea of what it was for about eight years.
- 6:11SPEAKER_04: And we knew it was a lung disease, not cancer.
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is uh just a hardening, if you will, where the lungs just stopped passing the oxygen from the lung to the bloodstream as efficiently as it's supposed to.
- 6:27SPEAKER_04: And it's progressive, and there's fast and slow.
- 6:30SPEAKER_04: And I've for five, six years, I was maybe even beyond that.
- 6:35SPEAKER_04: Um, I was a slow progressor.
- 6:37SPEAKER_04: You know, definitely affected me and affected my life, not in a way that many people would even notice.
- 6:43SPEAKER_04: Really, this summer is when things accelerated, things just got worse, faster.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: I hit a point where I realized to just do the normal everyday things, I needed oxygen.
- 6:55SPEAKER_04: And I probably should have gone it maybe even a year earlier, because I didn't realize until I went on it how much I was struggling to get air and function.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: And you told me a little while ago, too, that you think perhaps that could have had some more longer lasting effects.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: Like had you gotten on oxygen earlier long term, you'd be better off, not just in the moment of trying to breathe well.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: Were you thinking that at some point?
- 7:23SPEAKER_03: No, not really, Joe.
- 7:25SPEAKER_04: The disease is what it is, it's not very responsive to those kinds of tweakings, if you call it.
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: There's no real cure for it.
- 7:34SPEAKER_04: Now I have been out of medicine for, I don't know, four or five years now that has probably well-known side effects.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: And it's supposed to slow things down.
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: So this summer things went, you know, I went on oxygen, had to come out of the hiding and talk to people.
- 7:49SPEAKER_04: So we did that and had a great when I first went on oxygen.
- 7:52SPEAKER_04: I mean, probably for close to a month, I just felt great.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: I thought, gosh, I mean, obviously I didn't want to carry around a bag or pull a tank, but but in the process, we started to engage the lung transplant team at uh MUSC, and they are really, really thorough and very committed and aggressive.
- 8:16SPEAKER_04: And so we went through I guess I'll say a month, a two-week stretch.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm not exaggerating.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: I had 30 different appointments, you know, MRI, x-ray, ultrasound, blood drawn consultant, talk to this, talk to that.
- 8:35SPEAKER_04: I had 30 appointments in two weeks.
- 8:38SPEAKER_04: The short of it is everything's been progressing well.
- 8:41SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm older than they normally.
- 8:44SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying they don't ever do anybody, I'm 70.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: It's not like they don't ever do that, but it's definitely goes in the negative column, the age.
- 8:51SPEAKER_04: What we've run into recently is a liver issue that we don't know there is a liver issue, but there's some indication there might be.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: And uh yesterday what happened is we had an appointment with a great gentleman, doctor, surgeon, very possibly would do the surgery.
- 9:07SPEAKER_04: He informed us about this, came out of the blue, and said that we need you to have a biopsy of your liver done.
- 9:14SPEAKER_04: It's a one or the other, meaning if it falls one way, everything's good.
- 9:20SPEAKER_04: If it falls the other way, you're disqualified from getting a lung transplant.
- 9:25SPEAKER_04: You know, needless to say, it was uh a stunning moment.
- 9:29SPEAKER_04: We everything had been rolling along, you know.
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: You know, I mean, it's not like this has been a party, but it'd been rolling along in in a sense where we felt pretty pretty positive about what how this was gonna play out.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: So you just had you guys had y'all had no awareness of a lung issue.
- 9:46SPEAKER_03: I mean uh liver issue is what you're saying.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: The liver.
- 9:49SPEAKER_04: We knew I had some age age and stage things, sure, sure, but nothing that no, nothing that was going to have that kind of impact on how this played out.
- 9:59SPEAKER_04: He was he he delivered as well as you can deliver it, he was very kind and but he was very firm and said that this is potentially a deal breaker.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: And you told me yesterday that he was also visibly cons-I don't know if you said visibly, but he was definitely concerned about your quickening of the worsened conditions.
- 10:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he he said that if it weren't for this liver situation, I would have gone on the list for a liver yesterday.
- 10:29SPEAKER_04: For lung, you know, a lung.
- 10:31SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry, not a liver long.
- 10:32SPEAKER_04: And what that means is that you're at a point where you need it, like seriously need it.
- 10:37SPEAKER_04: And so he said, You're there and we want to get we want to get it done.
- 10:40SPEAKER_04: They wonderfully rushed.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: Like I even talked to the lady today to prep me for the physician's assistant, a PA today to prep me for the biopsy tomorrow.
- 10:50SPEAKER_04: She said, you know, somebody had to be in your corner to get this thing scheduled in basically 24 hours.
- 10:56SPEAKER_04: He told me, he said, Man, we we're we're we we want this for you.
- 10:59SPEAKER_04: We want this to work, and they feel they've been great.
- 11:01SPEAKER_04: Colin and I, we hood all this stuff together, and she's hearing everything I'm hearing, and it was uh it was pretty unsettling.
- 11:08SPEAKER_04: Um and we're just doing this because we want people to get, instead of getting these bits and pieces, we want them to get the straight scoop on this and give the spiritual side of it.
- 11:16SPEAKER_04: We're trusting God from day one, and you know, I think it's helped me.
- 11:20SPEAKER_04: I think it's helped me re-rethink in my head what that means, you know.
- 11:24SPEAKER_04: Uh back when I cut my teeth in the what we would call the word of faith movement, we would just take scripture at face value, which I still do.
- 11:31SPEAKER_04: And yet at the same time, you know, in other words, by his stripes we're healed and those kind of things, and I believe that.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: I believe it's God's will.
- 11:37SPEAKER_04: But at the same time, I've been a pastor for over 40 years, and I sure buried my share of people that were praying.
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: Now, I don't mean that might not be God's will.
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: All I'm saying is it's just giving me room and space and necessity to rethink some of that.
- 11:51SPEAKER_04: I don't know that I've changed my stand on it, but I've changed my posture of heart.
- 11:57SPEAKER_04: God just knows more than I do.
- 11:59SPEAKER_04: I think he's up to something.
- 12:00SPEAKER_04: We still, once we recovered, probably took us till last night sometime, but once we recovered, I think we regained a sense of uh, you know, number one, let's be real, man.
- 12:12SPEAKER_04: He told me, he said, it's probably less than a 50-50 chance that you have this disqualifying issue.
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: So, you know, we revisited that.
- 12:20SPEAKER_04: And the and the bottom line is, you know, door number one was God healing me, and that's still an option on the table.
- 12:25SPEAKER_04: And we haven't had the test yet, so it's not like it's happened.
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: We just knew we needed to regroup and and make sure that we were walking through this in a way that honored God and accepted the the journey that we needed to walk through.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: What is your most significant and and this you could really have a good laugh at me right now?
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: You'd be like, uh, my breathing.
- 13:30SPEAKER_03: But what's your most significant challenge physically, I guess, just from a bird's eye view?
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: Like, is it getting to a place where it's tough just walking to grab the mail?
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: What's your day-to-day right now as someone who needs that new lung?
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: Well, I mean, as you can see, I've got you know oxygen going now, and you set your uh oxygen concentrator at a level, the uh the non-portable one for the home goes from zero to ten.
- 14:00SPEAKER_04: When I first went on oxygen, I mean it I'd set it at a two when I was sitting, resting, sitting in bed, sleeping, didn't need it at all.
- 14:07SPEAKER_04: And just to give you a jolting, whatever, now I'm at an eight all the time.
- 14:13SPEAKER_04: So I can't take a shower without losing my breath.
- 14:17SPEAKER_04: I can't walk the dog without losing my breath.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: Like you, like you said, I'm just giving people an accurate picture.
- 14:23SPEAKER_04: Part of why I want to do this is there's people around us every day that are suffering with this kind of stuff, and they tend to go into hiding.
- 14:30SPEAKER_04: It's just not fun, and it's it's creepy to feel it.
- 14:34SPEAKER_04: And gosh, pulling tanks around is really creepy.
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: But yeah, Joey, I I am very, very limited in what I can do, and I need oxygen all the time.
- 14:43SPEAKER_04: Uh, one way to say it is the thought of being away from the oxygen for any length of time would be would be frightening.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Well, Chip, uh, thanks for letting me be a part of this.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: And I'm just thinking about the whole thing.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: It's been a, you know, you have your journey, uh, which is much more personal and intense than any of us.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: And I saw that my wife is on the broadcast right now, and she can tell you that behind the scenes we've had our own journey.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: I remember that a few weeks ago, you and I went to um a movie together.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: We do that from time to time.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: And uh horrible.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: Y'all skip a seat?
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Uh, we did that time, but not not normally.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: But uh and Chip picks the movies because he's the entertainment director.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: And uh, I should have known when it was Chip and I and a lady in the theater.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: That was it.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: That was all.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: Worst movie ever.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: Uh it was bad.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: Should we say what it was, Chip, or not?
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: You have to sure well, it was um The Joker, it was terrible.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: It was just a terrible movie.
- 15:47SPEAKER_04: I was shocked at how bad it was.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: Y'all weren't expecting it to be a musical, were you?
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: That's what my brother told me.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: I was like, I don't want to see that.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: No, it was terrible.
- 15:55SPEAKER_04: Did they say that in the advertising?
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: It was terrible.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: And so um we came out of the movie and Chip is waiting on Colleen, and um he couldn't breathe.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: And I saw at that moment how serious it was.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: And I saw him also not wanting to frighten his wife, and uh we stood and talked for quite a bit until he could get his breath.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: So I know the journey he's been through, and uh last night he called me uh right after they talked to the surgeon, and we talked for a while.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: I went uh to my own place to shed some tears, just you know, and and I haven't given up.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm my faith is this is gonna go, but I I hate this for my friend.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: I I really really hate this for my friend.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: And uh then this morning uh we had a meeting like this uh with our campus pastors.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: Chip meets with our campus pastors every week.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: Uh they are healthy for it, and they will tell you that.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: But uh this morning a lot of tears shed, just a lot of tears, and just walking through the whole process.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: And Chip, you're probably about tired of crying, I would imagine.
- 17:04SPEAKER_02: But uh something that really marked me today.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: Well, it's marked me since we uh wrote our book together, and probably before then, but just the intensity of it in writing the book.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: You have a habit of journaling uh that you've had for 30 years, 35 years, 40 years.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, and it's a unique style of journaling.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: And uh we wrote it in the book and we've done some videos and video courses on it, uh, that has served you well and served you well this morning.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: Talk to us a little bit about how you connected with God today in the middle of this.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: Uh just talk to us a little bit about that.
- 17:46SPEAKER_04: You know, if you're a serious student, you know, you you you read it, you look up words and all that in scripture.
- 17:51SPEAKER_04: And I remember years ago, Greg, you know, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
- 17:57SPEAKER_04: You know, there's two words for word, one is logos, one is rhema.
- 18:01SPEAKER_04: Logos is the written expression of God's heart, thought, and intent.
- 18:04SPEAKER_04: Rhema is like a conversational word, something he in this moment speaks to you.
- 18:10SPEAKER_04: And that scripture says that faith comes by that spoken word.
- 18:16SPEAKER_04: And there's other obvious indications that faith comes by the written word.
- 18:19SPEAKER_04: But my point is I've had the joy, pleasure, and honor of coming up in a version of Christianity where you expected God to communicate.
- 18:28SPEAKER_04: You expected God to never in violation of scripture, never adding to it, taking away from it, to communicate.
- 18:34SPEAKER_04: So we learned a way to do that years and years ago, and it has served us amazingly well in navigating through all these different seasons and hard times and good times, etc.
- 18:47SPEAKER_04: So when this thing first started, you know, I'm a unashamed, charismatic, at moments can be pretty wow.
- 18:54SPEAKER_04: So, you know, my normal posture would be to just get after it, warfare, et cetera, et cetera.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: And I would say to some degree I've done some of that.
- 19:02SPEAKER_04: But through this whole process, when I would start to strategize and kind of think about going that route, uh, like even recruiting an army of prayer people, and some people may not appreciate what I'm saying.
- 19:15SPEAKER_04: I just felt God saying, I want you to trust your way through this.
- 19:20SPEAKER_04: And just that subtle change of words.
- 19:23SPEAKER_04: I want you to trust your way through this, not in a sense, and be careful, don't weird out with me.
- 19:28SPEAKER_04: In a sense, I want you to trust your way through it, not believe your way through it.
- 19:31SPEAKER_04: And what I mean is he wanted me to, he wanted me to rely on his character and the God that I've come to know over these years, to whatever degree I have, but also the the testimony he's built over these years of just giving me unique perspective of like you look at a situation and and you feel like, oh God, well, I probably need to handle like this.
- 19:53SPEAKER_04: God says, no, no, no, I want you to handle it like this.
- 19:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but God, that's that's counterintuitive, that's weird.
- 19:59SPEAKER_04: You know, sometimes you do, sometimes you don't.
- 20:01SPEAKER_04: But when you do, it's like that kind of worked out pretty well, God.
- 20:04SPEAKER_04: Now, you've seen me a few times, I didn't do it the way God wanted me to.
- 20:08SPEAKER_04: I'm saying all that to say that I can remember telling several of you guys, my friends.
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: I remember talking to a guy, a dear friend, that I don't talk to that often.
- 20:16SPEAKER_04: He's up in Cleveland, and I remember telling him that I have this weird, and the only word I could think of was effortless peace.
- 20:24SPEAKER_04: Number one, I thought that's just a weird way to say it, but I thought it really does describe what I've experienced 90% of the time.
- 20:32SPEAKER_04: Now, I don't mean I mean, like you said, Greg, my wife and I cried yesterday.
- 20:38SPEAKER_04: On the campus pastor called today, I cried.
- 20:40SPEAKER_04: I figured out that what draws the tears out of me is when I'm around people that I know really care and and they they and they're not in a hurry.
- 20:47SPEAKER_04: And it's like it just melts my defenses and out it comes.
- 20:51SPEAKER_04: But you know, yesterday was pretty unsettling.
- 20:54SPEAKER_04: Gosh, to really tell the story, I gotta go down another rabbit.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: Everybody wants to know everything, so don't apologize.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: Everybody wants to know everything.
- 21:00SPEAKER_04: Well, one of my one of my big issues, one of my big issues in woundedness of life was from my father.
- 21:05SPEAKER_04: And he would say, You're lazy, you'll never mount anything.
- 21:07SPEAKER_04: And what that translated into as a kind of a background to my soul was this thought that I'm a disappointment and I never get done what I should.
- 21:17SPEAKER_04: I I don't work hard enough, this, that, and the other.
- 21:21SPEAKER_04: And God has spent a lot of time in my life convincing me that trusting gets you further than trying.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: And almost like He wants that to be like the life message or calling card of my ministry.
- 21:34SPEAKER_04: You know, destiny's received, not achieved.
- 21:38SPEAKER_04: So I've always fought with, Am I doing enough?
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: I would hit a rough spot in this six, six to eight year journey, and we'd get a bad report or whatever.
- 21:47SPEAKER_04: And the first place, the first wall of resistance I would hit is well, if you were just praying more.
- 21:53SPEAKER_04: Well, if you were just doing this, if you were this, if you were this.
- 21:56SPEAKER_04: I always had to get past that.
- 21:58SPEAKER_04: And God's gotten really good at helping me get past it.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: One thing that I wrote down preparing for this, and it's it's a big one, so this may not necessarily be the Holy Spirit, but I hey, I'll I'll believe.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: But I was gonna ask y'all, I was trying to, Greg, here we go.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: No, I was gonna ask y'all of if if we three had to think of something like that universally applies to all people as far as what God would ask and invite us to do if we were in chip shoes.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: The biggest thing that I thought of what that would be on top of the list, and I'd put in all caps, trust.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: I just think that's kind of neat.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: I just was Gonna say, I just think it's kind of neat that Joey can hear from God.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: I know it.
- 22:44SPEAKER_04: I know it.
- 22:45SPEAKER_04: I'm sort of stunned.
- 22:48SPEAKER_04: When he said when he said he hadn't talked like he had something profound, I said, Oh, this this this little podcast is going into crapper, man.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: I mean, we're Joey's gonna say something and we're not gonna be able to recover from it.
- 23:01SPEAKER_04: Hey, y'all are listening.
- 23:03SPEAKER_04: We we love Joey, man.
- 23:05SPEAKER_04: We love him.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: So yes, we do.
- 23:07SPEAKER_03: Hey, as as we're laughing, I was gonna ask you, Chip, do you see laughter and joking around?
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: I would imagine there's probably been times to where you just wouldn't be in the mood regardless of someone's intention.
- 23:24SPEAKER_03: Or is is there always room for laughter because it's good for the soul?
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: Does that make sense?
- 23:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:31SPEAKER_04: I'm in the mood for laughter when I shouldn't be.
- 23:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, I really am.
- 23:34SPEAKER_04: I mean, interesting.
- 23:35SPEAKER_04: I yeah, I have an aversion for negative emotions, and I mean that.
- 23:39SPEAKER_04: It's part of why I I can't control my eating like I should.
- 23:43SPEAKER_04: I like manipulating my feelings.
- 23:44SPEAKER_04: You know, you tell me we're gonna ask my wife spaghetti for dinner.
- 23:48SPEAKER_04: I I I'm on a I'm on a uh oxy not oxytocin, what's the other one?
- 23:52SPEAKER_04: Uh dopamine.
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: I'm on a dopamine rush.
- 23:55SPEAKER_04: So I like I like moving the room toward good feelings, even at times when you shouldn't.
- 24:01SPEAKER_04: So yeah, uh I'm definitely a feeling junkie to some degree.
- 24:05SPEAKER_04: So back to the story that Joey kind of took off course.
- 24:09SPEAKER_04: No, I'm kidding.
- 24:10SPEAKER_04: So, you know, yesterday I had to fight through that.
- 24:12SPEAKER_04: You know, God, have I not done enough?
- 24:15SPEAKER_04: Have I not prayed enough?
- 24:16SPEAKER_04: Did I not recruit an army?
- 24:18SPEAKER_04: Did I not, should I have done it the old school way, you know, whatever.
- 24:23SPEAKER_04: And I had I'll be honest with you, I had I I was up during the middle of the night having a horrible time.
- 24:27SPEAKER_04: And uh the devil just messing with me and telling, you know, kind of taking my thoughts down some nasty little places.
- 24:33SPEAKER_04: And I had an old familiar scripture that finally came to me that I that I used to push push him off.
- 24:40SPEAKER_04: Uh 2 Corinthians 2.14, uh, thanks be unto God who always leads us in his triumph in Christ Jesus and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere we go.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: And I would just say it over and over and over.
- 24:57SPEAKER_04: And eventually it pushed that that just kind of negativity away.
- 25:03SPEAKER_04: So I got up this morning, we doing our prayer time.
- 25:05SPEAKER_04: Typically, we we're like right now, we're reading through Corinth uh 1 Corinthians, and we'll read a chapter, and and then typically we'll pray between a half hour and an hour in tongues, and I'll put music on and whatever.
- 25:17SPEAKER_04: I asked Colina, I said, Do you mind if I put some rowdier music on today?
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: So I put on some a little bit rowdier, not real rowdy, but a little bit.
- 25:23SPEAKER_03: And uh you gotta give an example.
- 25:25SPEAKER_03: Everybody's like, what?
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: Rowdy?
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: Rowdy Christian music or like rowdy or 70s stuff.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: What are you talking about, rowdy?
- 25:31SPEAKER_04: No, I'm talking Christian.
- 25:33SPEAKER_04: I mean like Brandon Lake's uh I Need a Ghost.
- 25:36SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 25:36SPEAKER_04: Is that the title?
- 25:37SPEAKER_04: I need I Need a Ghost or something.
- 25:39SPEAKER_04: Uh I would consider that rowdy and um uh whatever.
- 25:42SPEAKER_04: I can name some of them, but they're you know, clear.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: So you kept with worship to the Lord.
- 25:48SPEAKER_04: I like praying in the spirit with music, and I like riding the music and the the the the tempo and the the the feel of it, if it's sad, if it's happy, if it's and I and I like to ride it.
- 26:02SPEAKER_04: So I was doing that, and I got up and walked around.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: It was just interesting.
- 26:06SPEAKER_04: One of the things I learned about the journaling that Greg was referencing, there's four steps quiet yourself on the inside and outside, tune or focus on Jesus, the word, scripture.
- 26:18SPEAKER_04: Number three, the way Mark uh Verkler taught it to us was tune to spontaneity, watch for thoughts, images, impressions that just come from you just like I I I wasn't thinking that, or I wasn't.
- 26:37SPEAKER_04: In other words, here's the two words I like to use that aren't self-initiated or self-directed.
- 26:42SPEAKER_04: In other words, a thought that kind of like felt like it just got stuck in your thoughts.
- 26:48SPEAKER_04: And so I'm you know, I'm praying and I'm I'm standing at the window looking out at the fountain that's out in front of our place.
- 26:53SPEAKER_04: I just hear this phrase, land of the living, and I'm like, land of the living.
- 26:59SPEAKER_04: That's weird.
- 26:59SPEAKER_04: Then I remembered scriptures about promises that this or that is something you're gonna experience, but not over yonder in the land of the living, and that just kind of made me like okay, it didn't feel like me.
- 27:17SPEAKER_04: And I keep praying, and I'm you know, and it it starts to turn my emotions, you know, in a good way.
- 27:24SPEAKER_04: And then I heard the phrase in the palm of my hand.
- 27:27SPEAKER_04: You're in the palm of my hand, nothing can touch you, nothing can touch you that I'm not aware of.
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: And no, that that's above my pay grade, how all that works.
- 27:39SPEAKER_04: But these are not thoughts or scriptures or phrases I have in my mind all the time.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: I don't think those I don't I couldn't tell you last time I thought those two phrases.
- 27:47SPEAKER_04: And so I'm I'm I'm praying and I'm like, okay, God, you got my attention.
- 27:51SPEAKER_04: And again, remember that part of what I have to fight through is feeling like I'm not doing enough.
- 27:57SPEAKER_04: You should be more worked up, you should you should be praying harder, you should be marshaling the troops and leading the charge and whatever.
- 28:03SPEAKER_04: And I'm not saying there's not a time for that.
- 28:05SPEAKER_04: There is a time for that, but I felt through this thing that God, again, God wanted me to focus on trust, and I and I felt like I, Coley and I have been.
- 28:14SPEAKER_04: I'm kind of like land of the living, you're in the palm of my hand, and uh, and I'm feeling like this sort of nice, like, okay, maybe I'm not crazy.
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: I am in faith, I'm just applying it in a different way than than I were used to in the movement I was a part of.
- 28:32SPEAKER_04: And then I had this thought, well, God, why aren't I more worked up?
- 28:36SPEAKER_04: And then I had another thought that, dude, I never would have thought of this.
- 28:40SPEAKER_04: And then I heard this thought.
- 28:42SPEAKER_04: Jesus was asleep in the back of the boat during the storm.
- 28:47SPEAKER_04: And I thought, I thought, honestly, here's what I felt like.
- 28:51SPEAKER_04: I felt like somebody had suckered me down a little just a logic argument and then slammed the door on me.
- 28:59SPEAKER_04: Because I thought, I could not have, I couldn't have come up with that if I tried.
- 29:05SPEAKER_04: Gosh.
- 29:05SPEAKER_04: And I thought, Jesus was asleep in the back of the boat during the storm.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: And I think that's so clearly the Holy Spirit talking to you, you know.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: I mean it's gotta be.
- 29:16SPEAKER_04: I I don't I'm not smart enough to come up with that in that moment.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, all right, God.
- 29:22SPEAKER_04: To me, that's the ultimate expression of trust.
- 29:25SPEAKER_04: The ultimate expression of trust is, oh, you know, there's a there's something going on over here.
- 29:30SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go take a nap.
- 29:33SPEAKER_04: That's a pretty decent expression that this is beyond my ability to fix.
- 29:39SPEAKER_04: And I'm gonna go take a nap while the person who can fix it fixes it.
- 29:44SPEAKER_04: And again, I'm I'm not trying to write a new version of how faith should work.
- 29:48SPEAKER_04: I'm just trying to say that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen, how it manifests itself.
- 29:57SPEAKER_04: And I know we talk a lot about I I'll tell you what, what prompted this that we're doing right this second, is also the thought occurred to me that I wanted to share with people where I'm at.
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: The way it occurred to me was there's a scripture that says, I believed, therefore I speak.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: And I just thought, I don't need to talk about this.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: You told me on the phone too, and it was a very, it was, you just said it nonchalant, like very practically.
- 30:26SPEAKER_03: Hey, let's let's get ahead of this and do this recording today for the sake of people being able to pray, since you're gonna get this biopsy very soon and get results soon.
- 30:39SPEAKER_03: Pastor Greg, when that same conversation earlier today, Pastor Chip referred to you as his pastor, and I was just curious how I mean, some some of this would be obvious, but how is pastoring your friend different from pastoring a stranger that calls the church and says, Hey, I need to talk to a pastor?
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's um I don't even I guess I don't even look at it as pastoring my friend.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: I just want to be a friend to a friend.
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: And uh he's been so much to me and uh continues to be using a chipism on the story he just told.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: Chip likes to say, you know, that just lives well.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: Or we'll be talking about something that somebody's doing, and he'll say, Don't worry about it, that doesn't live well.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: They won't stay there.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: That doesn't live well.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: But what he just talked about lives lives well.
- 31:43SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of alternatives, you know, and places you could be, and and I know he cries, and I know he probably wonders you know, where am I?
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: I do the same thing.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, I I hate this.
- 31:59SPEAKER_02: I hate I hate the the sin that it came from, the devil, and I hate the the fact that death is the the final enemy and that we all face it.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: And I just want to wait a few years for him to face it because we got a lot of work to do, you know.
- 32:15SPEAKER_02: And and uh but as far as pastoring Chip, it's just I I think it's a mutual pastoring deal.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: I'll call Chip and say, Chip, let's have lunch.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: And sometimes we have lunch just to just to have lunch, but oftentimes you know, I I need somebody to talk to.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: Or he'll say, Hey, let's let's do this, and he needs somebody to talk to.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: And um you you can't buy that.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: You just can't buy that.
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: Men at men at our age uh are chronically lonely.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: There's all kinds of articles out there about it, and I just feel very, very blessed uh to um to have a friend like him.
- 33:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: You're trusting that God has more years for you, job ain't done.
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: Alongside that faith, is there also any anything in your mind that's living in accordance with a maybe that hey, maybe your days are way more limited than than you've ever known them to be.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: Like thinking along the lines of how you live each day because of what a maybe could be.
- 33:31SPEAKER_04: You mean kind of like if you only had X amount of time, how would you live?
- 33:35SPEAKER_04: That sort of thing.
- 33:37SPEAKER_04: That doesn't really work for me.
- 33:39SPEAKER_04: I don't mean to sound whatever, but I'm not a driven type A person, but I am a very hungry, passionate, loyal, whatever.
- 33:51SPEAKER_04: And so I I may not do all the right things at the right time, but I've I I've stayed after it for 48 years.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: Now I do feel like God's challenged me that you can't coast uphill.
- 34:05SPEAKER_04: And so I feel like God said has said to me throughout these last few days, even, I do have more for you to do, but you you you can't you can't lose your edge.
- 34:14SPEAKER_04: You you gotta keep your edge, you gotta whatever.
- 34:17SPEAKER_04: So, in that sense, you know, I guess I'd I'd agree with what you're saying, but my deal is, and again, I know it's it's the point behind the whole uh illustration, but my deal is this oh to our campus pastors, to everybody, I'd say this live hard after God in your 20s and 30s and 40s and 50s.
- 34:36SPEAKER_04: I don't know, Greg, about you, dude, but I'm blown away by what I get to do.
- 34:41SPEAKER_04: And during a time like this, and forgive me for saying it if this is weird to anybody, but do you realize what it means to somebody like Greg, myself, or Joey, or you guys?
- 34:49SPEAKER_04: I hope you get this.
- 34:50SPEAKER_04: When somebody tells you the impact your life has had on them, I'll live however I gotta live for that, man.
- 34:57SPEAKER_04: I don't need any extra motivation, I don't need a short clock to be motivated.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: Hey, my last question for you, Pastor Chip, and Pastor Greg obviously may want to fit something in.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: And I'm I'd I'd love for if if it's all right with you, Pastor Greg, for you to lead a prayer that everybody who's watching right now can chime into.
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: And that's a that's a big one, is is Chip really is part of getting this episode out, is he's asking for prayer.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: And in the show notes, Chip didn't ask me to mention this, but his daughter set up a it's called Caring Bridge, right?
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: Caring Bridge account, and so you can sign up to that account to keep up to date uh information on Chip and what's going on, and they've been updating it already, and then there's also a GoFundMe.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: Uh not only obviously do we know how medical expenses can be, but uh Pastor Chip's lack of mobility when it comes to traveling and just his limited availability to do the sorts of things that he's accustomed to doing, that's part of his income.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: You know, a lot of that is limited as well.
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: And we just want to help as much as we possibly can.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: So there'll be a GoFundMe in the show notes.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: When you hear Pastor Chip to live is Christ and to die is gain, how much of an effort is it for you in your current headspace to resonate with that fully?
- 36:23SPEAKER_04: My understanding is the life after this life goes on forever.
- 36:27SPEAKER_04: So I'm in no hurry to get there.
- 36:32SPEAKER_03: Pastor Greg, have you ever heard that answer?
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: I love that man.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: I love that man.
- 36:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that is so good.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: I'm in no hurry to get there.
- 36:42SPEAKER_04: I'm having a pretty good time, even with what I'm dealing with.
- 36:45SPEAKER_04: Life is freaking amazing.
- 36:48SPEAKER_04: You know, and again, I don't mean to sound all super spiritual, but you know, that question a minute ago, Joey, about if you knew life was your your time was short, you know what we what needs to motivate us?
- 36:58SPEAKER_04: It's just walking around watching people.
- 37:01SPEAKER_04: When you see the pain around you, if that doesn't motivate you, shut up and go get saved again.
- 37:07SPEAKER_04: I mean, there's just people around us that need, they need us to get our act together.
- 37:13SPEAKER_04: They need us to be healthy enough to be helpful.
- 37:16SPEAKER_04: I don't need a short clock to motivate me, man.
- 37:18SPEAKER_04: All I gotta do is talk to three or four people and realize, Jesus, if there's any way you can help me help them, please help me to help them.
- 37:28SPEAKER_02: I can't even describe what an impact this guy has on my life.
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: Uh I said earlier, we we go to movies on our day off.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: We don't do it all the time, but we we do it periodically.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: I remember one time.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: I don't know what we were doing, Chip.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: We were up in the upstate somewhere, and we had some time to kill.
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: Uh, we went to see a movie, and again, you chose it, and it was terrible.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: It was like uh a shoot 'em up that I was embarrassed even to be there.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: And so we walk out of the theater, and sure enough, somebody that went to one of our upstate campuses, oh, Pastor Greg, Pastor Chip, what did you see?
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: Did we tell them the truth?
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: I don't know whether we did it.
- 38:14SPEAKER_04: No, no.
- 38:15SPEAKER_04: No, we did it.
- 38:16SPEAKER_04: We did a shuffle.
- 38:17SPEAKER_04: We did a break.
- 38:18SPEAKER_04: We did a shuffle.
- 38:19SPEAKER_04: We did out a break without answering.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: But uh whether it's going to a movie, we go to concerts together, and uh we do like old 70s music, and and it's just fun to do that with him.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: But we sit down and we have great talks, and uh, it's both of our dream to really impact and change the conversation of Christianity for the next well, he says hundred years, I think, and he has bigger faith than I do.
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: But I think we've impacted it a little bit.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: I want to impact it some more.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: But I really uh I love this man and uh love everything about him.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: Why don't we pray?
- 39:02SPEAKER_02: All right, can we do that?
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: Let's join our faith wherever we are.
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: Some of you are in a car, don't close your eyes.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: Um around a computer or maybe at a getting ready to have dinner.
- 39:18SPEAKER_02: Let's just pray, uh let's just pray as if it was yourself or your best friend.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: Because Chip, Chip is my best friend, but uh there are a lot of people that say that.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: And uh what a what a what a great life that is.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: Let's pray.
- 39:35SPEAKER_02: God, I I bring my friend to you, and uh we have been praying and trusting, and we've seen your hand so often in the process, uh, even at times that we didn't understand.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: And we don't understand right now.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: We just don't.
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: We've got to say that.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: But we trust you.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: We we trust you.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: We don't know what to do, but we're our eyes are on you, and we trust you.
- 40:01SPEAKER_02: God, we specifically pray for um this liver procedure that will be done soon.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: God, I pray that it would be clear.
- 40:11SPEAKER_02: Our desire is that uh Chip is clear, that uh if if it be your will that he have a lung transplant, that that goes well and goes quickly, and uh, if not, that you would heal him miraculously, however you choose.
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: But God, we are gonna trust you and we love you, and uh we're just agreeing together tonight.
- 40:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, wherever we are, we're agreeing together that your kingdom would come and that your will would be done in his body as it's done in heaven.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: And uh God, we agree together on that and trust you, we're gonna trust you on it.
- 40:50SPEAKER_02: God, I pray that with Colleen and Chip and their extended families, uh, God, I pray that your peace that doesn't make sense would continue to settle in their hearts.
- 41:03SPEAKER_02: We're gonna trust you on it.
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: We're committed to it.
- 41:07SPEAKER_02: In your name we pray.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: Amen.
- 41:11SPEAKER_02: Amen.
- 41:12SPEAKER_04: Obviously, the money's appreciated beyond.
- 41:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's honestly it's jaw-dropping how generous you people are.
- 41:19SPEAKER_04: It's just, and you know I mean in a sarcastic way, but it's just stupid.
- 41:24SPEAKER_04: How amazingly generous you are.
- 41:25SPEAKER_04: But I just want you to know, man, I'm awed by your love.
- 41:28SPEAKER_04: I'm awed by just it's been a privilege to do what I get to do.
- 41:35SPEAKER_04: And if and if that in some way has benefited you, uh wow.
- 41:41SPEAKER_04: I just want you to know I love you.
