- 0:00Uh yeah, first before I get started, I
- 0:02want to, you know, uh offer, you know,
- 0:04my sincerest condolences to, you know,
- 0:07the family of Wes Rucker. Um,
- 0:11you know,
- 0:13it's obviously a tragedy. Um, Wes
- 0:15covered me when I was at Tennessee and,
- 0:18um, you know, he
- 0:21was a basketball guy before it became
- 0:23fashionable because the SEC wasn't very
- 0:26good in basketball. and um
- 0:29a true professional guy that just knew
- 0:31his stuff, was very fair and honest in
- 0:34his assessments. Um you know, he he when
- 0:38you think about, you know, journalism
- 0:40and beat writing at Tennessee, that's
- 0:42that's the name that that you always um
- 0:45will remember. And uh you know, he did
- 0:47me a ton of solids when I was having a
- 0:50really bad uh radio show out of college
- 0:52trying to find my way. and he would come
- 0:54on Sunday mornings and uh be my guest.
- 0:56Um and he didn't have to do that and he
- 0:58was always incredibly generous to me and
- 1:01um so I'm just praying for his wife
- 1:03Lauren right now and um you know it's a
- 1:05terrible tragedy and uh you know
- 1:07hopefully everybody keeps them in their
- 1:09prayers right now um while they're going
- 1:10through a really difficult time. Um, you
- 1:13know, once again, you know, our our fan
- 1:15base, um, whether we deserve it or not,
- 1:18they are unbelievable and they just
- 1:21continue to show up and show out and
- 1:23just continue to support this team and,
- 1:26um, we're, you know, we're just we're so
- 1:28thankful and we're grateful. Um, you
- 1:30know, the Outlive game was another huge
- 1:32success. Um, you know, my sister Jackie
- 1:34did an unbelievable job of putting the
- 1:36event on. Um, and uh, you know, raised a
- 1:40ton of awareness and and hopefully a ton
- 1:41of money. So, um, incredibly
- 1:44appreciative to our fan base and our
- 1:45administration for allowing us to keep
- 1:47this tradition going and it's obviously
- 1:49a great cause and, um, you know, was
- 1:53another successful night. Um, big win
- 1:56obviously for our team. Um, felt like
- 1:58that was one we had to get, you know,
- 1:59just based on where we were in the
- 2:01season uh, in in that recent fiveame
- 2:04stretch.
- 2:05um
- 2:08you know, our guys, you know, um did a
- 2:11good job of, you know, kind of battling
- 2:12the highs and the lows of that game
- 2:14because there there was a bunch of them.
- 2:15You know, there was 11 lead changes.
- 2:17Game was tied 10 times and our guys just
- 2:19continued to fight. We got down nine
- 2:21early. Had to burn a timeout and just
- 2:23kind of refocus the group. We had to fix
- 2:25our body language a little bit. Wasn't
- 2:27wasn't great at halftime. It wasn't
- 2:28great coming out of halftime. And then
- 2:30Elijah Freeman comes in and him and
- 2:31Keshan Murphy are just, you know,
- 2:33phenomenal the second half. and just did
- 2:35a lot of really good things for us. Um,
- 2:38you know, we uh we had to do a better
- 2:39job of finishing games. You know, we're
- 2:41I don't know, we were up four, I think,
- 2:43at the under four media and just talked
- 2:45about having to finish and uh you know,
- 2:46we had two coverage mistakes on
- 2:48backto-back possessions that led to
- 2:50threes, very similar to the Mississippi
- 2:51State game. So, we got to stop doing
- 2:53that if we want to win. Um, so a lot to
- 2:56learn from, but you know, down three
- 2:58late, you know, find a way to get to the
- 3:00free throw line, make two and draw a
- 3:02foul on the press, you know, and our
- 3:04guys just, you know, hung in there and
- 3:05Elijah obviously makes a big play late.
- 3:06So, uh, with that, take any questions.
- 3:10>> Obviously Elijah can put back, but he
- 3:12was he was plus 10 for y'all tonight led
- 3:14the team. just how big was he in the in
- 3:16the end, but also just throughout the
- 3:18game giving all that spark.
- 3:20>> Yeah, I mean that was about as physical
- 3:21I've seen as I've seen him play
- 3:23offensively probably I mean in a while.
- 3:26Um he was just had his shoulders down,
- 3:28did a great job putting the ball on the
- 3:30floor and just being aggressive and I
- 3:32liked a lot of the looks that he had in
- 3:33the game. you know, he had a couple
- 3:34clean ones from three that I thought
- 3:36were in. And uh he just did a really
- 3:38good job of just playing physically and
- 3:40to be plus 10 in a one-point win really
- 3:42speaks to, you know, his contributions
- 3:43and did a lot of really good things out
- 3:45there defensively and uh you know, he
- 3:47was he was great tonight. So that's
- 3:48that's the Elijah that, you know, we
- 3:50need every game in order for us to beat
- 3:52the best teams on our schedule. So our
- 3:54bench, you know, gave some good
- 3:56contributions tonight and Elijah was
- 3:57great.
- 3:58>> Brian,
- 4:00Stephen, you mentioned Mississippi
- 4:01State. What does it say about the
- 4:02resiliency of your team that you're
- 4:03going through that possibly again, but
- 4:05this time they bounced back and made the
- 4:07end. The second part is what did you see
- 4:09on that? Um I think it's Kevin Overton
- 4:11that threw that foul there late. What
- 4:13you see on that play?
- 4:15>> Uh yeah, I mean our guys did a great job
- 4:18of bouncing back. Um you know, I think
- 4:22it's it's been a pretty interesting
- 4:25slate up to this point. Um, and I don't
- 4:28ever want to say that we've been
- 4:29unlucky, but if you look at some of the
- 4:32performances that opposing players have
- 4:35had, especially from three, I think
- 4:36we've had 11 or 12 guys since conference
- 4:39play has started that have either
- 4:41matched their season highs or had a
- 4:44season high and three-point makes
- 4:46against us. And a lot of those guys are
- 4:48guys that are like shooting 28 to 32%
- 4:50from three at the time. And then, you
- 4:53know, obviously, um, Hubard goes
- 4:55ballistic and has 46 and then he goes
- 4:57four for 20 tonight at South Carolina.
- 5:00So, about threw up my lunch when I watch
- 5:02that.
- 5:04So, to answer your question, I think our
- 5:06guys have done a good job of recognizing
- 5:08that we we've had a little we've been a
- 5:10little unlucky in some of these games.
- 5:12Um, because that's how we have to
- 5:14defend. You know, we can't we can't not
- 5:16be in gaps because teams would be too
- 5:18good getting to the rim and finishing
- 5:19through contact. And tonight was
- 5:20probably the first time that the the
- 5:22numbers actually went back into our
- 5:23favor as far as teams not making open
- 5:25shots. Um, you know, Kentucky goes six
- 5:28for 23.
- 5:29They shoot like 36% I think from three.
- 5:32So, um, finally, you know, we we had one
- 5:35go our way, which was great. And then I
- 5:37I mean I just you know we KO was in a
- 5:39stance and I KO's backs to me so I
- 5:42didn't you know see the play but looked
- 5:44like he extended his arms and we got the
- 5:46offensive foul so we were able to get
- 5:47the ball back and um did a great job of
- 5:50you know getting a inside touch so we
- 5:52could at least have the opportunity to
- 5:54get an offensive rebound and then you
- 5:56know we we kind of knew what they were
- 5:57going to run at the end of the game. We
- 5:59saw Marino do it against LSU. Um so you
- 6:03know he almost caught it again and uh
- 6:06you know fortunately he kind of bobbled
- 6:07it and we were able to win the game.
- 6:10>> Coach um Mark came in here and he very
- 6:12articulately expressed his thoughts on
- 6:15how physical the game was. What are your
- 6:18thoughts on how physical this was and
- 6:19how do you keep your team focused
- 6:21through kind of how this game was
- 6:23called?
- 6:24>> Yeah, I mean I thought that there was a
- 6:26foul on every single possession the
- 6:28first five minutes of the game. Um, and
- 6:31you know, I think the officials tried to
- 6:34let both teams play through it. Um, cuz
- 6:37I mean, if every foul was called on both
- 6:39ends, it would have been, you know, both
- 6:41teams would have shot 50 free throws.
- 6:42So, um, yeah, a lot of physicality on
- 6:45both ends, you know, I thought they were
- 6:46holding us on every single entry pass,
- 6:48you know, um, and, you know, so I mean,
- 6:51I think it it works both ways. Um, so
- 6:54yeah, very physical game and uh, you
- 6:56know, I thought for the most part our
- 6:58guys did a pretty good job of handling
- 6:59it and uh, you know, I told him I was
- 7:01like, don't don't ask for whistles in
- 7:03this game because obviously like that's
- 7:04not how they're calling it right now.
- 7:05You got to adjust to what the officials
- 7:07are doing and they already have an
- 7:09impossible job as it is. And um, you
- 7:11know, our guys did a decent job of
- 7:14hanging in there and trying to play
- 7:15through contact.
- 7:20going 25 and 10 minutes of those boards
- 7:23were on the offense and just how this in
- 7:26this game considering a lot of
- 7:29>> right. No, it was great. We we talked
- 7:31about trying to set the tone early in
- 7:33this game and send a message as far as
- 7:34how we were going to play. And Murf
- 7:36having four offensive rebounds pretty
- 7:37early in that game uh did did a really
- 7:39good job of uh you know kind of
- 7:41establishing his presence early. um you
- 7:44know that was what Mississippi State did
- 7:45to us early in the game and Murf took to
- 7:48the coaching and you know he kind of
- 7:49flipped that tonight which was great and
- 7:50then obviously I didn't realize he had
- 7:5225 that's you know he obviously played
- 7:55great and uh made his free throws and uh
- 7:57after we had two just horrendous
- 7:59defensive mistakes he they don't guard
- 8:01him at the top of the floor and he just
- 8:03you know bangs that three which was you
- 8:05know obviously uh that kind of shifted
- 8:07the game right there and uh you know he
- 8:09had a lot of step up tonight and I'm
- 8:11glad he played well cuz you know
- 8:12obviously he was disappointed point in
- 8:13how he played against Mississippi State
- 8:14and uh he followed it up with a
- 8:17incredible effort tonight.
- 8:18>> Nathan Stegy's three-point shooting
- 8:21coming way down in this game. What did
- 8:23you see defensively from your squad
- 8:25particularly as y'all were making your
- 8:26comeback in the second half? I think
- 8:28they went six minutes without a basket
- 8:30at one point.
- 8:32>> Yeah, I think we just we were a little
- 8:33more connected and I haven't I got to
- 8:35watch the film obviously, but I thought
- 8:37we just did a better job of uh you know
- 8:40communicating our switches. We did a
- 8:41good job communicating our ball screen
- 8:43coverages. You know, um we did a better
- 8:45job with our framing. You know, we
- 8:48didn't get um back doored as much. And I
- 8:50thought our bigs had great ball pressure
- 8:52on their bigs, which made it really
- 8:53difficult for them to see.
- 8:56Part of it was, you know, we got a
- 8:58little fortunate. They they missed some
- 8:59some open ones. Um
- 9:04yeah, I mean Chandler goes one for six,
- 9:06so I mean that's, you know, obviously
- 9:08very important, you know, for us, but
- 9:11you know, we we went five for 19, so we
- 9:13missed our fair share as well. So um
- 9:15yeah, I just thought we were more
- 9:16connected defensively, did a good job um
- 9:19communicating and you know, I thought we
- 9:20Keshan Hall, here's your difference.
- 9:23Kean Hall had eight huge defensive
- 9:25rebounds and a lot of those came in the
- 9:26second half. So we were able to finish
- 9:27possessions. Take a few more.
- 9:30>> Uh, coach, seems to still be a lot of
- 9:32hard coaching and conversations going on
- 9:34with guys like Tahad and Kean Holland
- 9:36who's struggling offensively tonight.
- 9:38What are those conversations for you
- 9:39tonight in particular and then just
- 9:41moving forward with with some of your
- 9:42best players?
- 9:44>> I asked them, you know, there's a couple
- 9:46restaurants in in Norman, Oklahoma that
- 9:48we're trying to decide on Monday night
- 9:50if we're going to go to. And, you know,
- 9:51we said we're going to go.
- 9:54Um, honestly, I'm not really sure which
- 9:57conversations, you know, you're
- 9:58referring to, but you know, at the end
- 10:00of the game, I I lit up Key because he
- 10:02had two bad defensive mistakes and, uh,
- 10:05you know, Tahad, I think the one you're
- 10:07probably referring to is when he fell
- 10:10down. Um, so both those came late,
- 10:13right? Is that what you're probably
- 10:14talking about? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So
- 10:16Tahad falls down when he's on the
- 10:18baseline runner action and Chandler's
- 10:20coming off and he's like, "Well, he
- 10:22pushed me with me." I was like, "I don't
- 10:23care if he like, you know, suplexed you.
- 10:27You got to get through that. You can't
- 10:28be on the ground because then we're
- 10:30we're outnumbered if if bodies are on
- 10:32the floor." So um yeah, I mean, you
- 10:34know, we had a a spirited conversation,
- 10:36but you know, he he was good and he
- 10:37locked back in and, you know, did a good
- 10:39job. And then Key just, you know, had
- 10:41two had two tough mistakes late. uh let
- 10:43you know drive it left downhill and we
- 10:45talked about sending him right and you
- 10:47know we messed we messed up what we call
- 10:49a top on top bottom on bottom um and uh
- 10:52you know gave an open three in the
- 10:54corner. So that was my conversations
- 10:56with him.
- 10:57>> Last one
- 10:58>> Stephen I think it was right after the
- 10:59game Wednesday you immediately talked
- 11:01about just how big this game was to get
- 11:04the win in the last seconds. How
- 11:05important is this for your team with
- 11:07four games left?
- 11:08>> Yeah, it was crucial. You know it was a
- 11:10game that we had to have. Obviously, you
- 11:12know, we kind of played our way into a
- 11:15you know, a bubble situation and uh you
- 11:18know, that's going to be another I'm not
- 11:21sure what how much they'll move. They're
- 11:23at 30 right now uh in the net. So
- 11:26hopefully only winning by one moves them
- 11:27up a spot and we can keep it as a quad
- 11:29one because you know every quad one win
- 11:31is obviously important. So that's going
- 11:32to be our fifth I think of the season.
- 11:34Um which is significant because a lot of
- 11:36the teams on the bubble don't have that
- 11:38many. So huge win for us. Um, but it
- 11:41means nothing if we don't prepare for
- 11:43Oklahoma with the same desperation that
- 11:45we prepared for tonight.
- 11:47>> All right. Thanks, guys.
