- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37I don't know if we were told that prior to becoming
- 0:40believers. If someone said, by the way, if
- 0:43you commit your life to Christ and you really want to follow
- 0:46him and be serious about him, you're going to have some
- 0:49struggles in life, persecution. And how many people would be
- 0:53willing to sign up for that? No one told me that.
- 0:56So I just believe real simply, and I'm thankful I did.
- 1:00But if someone would have told me, if you become a believer,
- 1:02you're going to have a lot of struggles, I might have had to
- 1:04think about it a little bit. You may have heard it taught
- 1:07that if you give your life to Jesus, all your troubles will
- 1:10disappear. Well, in his message today,
- 1:13Pastor Clark wants to set a few things straight.
- 1:15You see, it is true. The biggest problem you'll ever
- 1:18face in life is sin. So when you give your life to
- 1:22Christ, you'll be forgiven of your sin and receive eternal
- 1:25life. But The thing is that when you
- 1:27follow Christ, you're choosing to do so in hostile territory.
- 1:31Following Jesus is a difficult journey, but the destination is
- 1:35eternal life. Now here's Pastor Clark in Acts
- 1:39Chapter 8 with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:43This is Acts chapter 8 where Paul was baptized by Ananias and
- 1:50it talked about the things that we're going to occur in his life
- 1:55and it says there how many things he must suffer for my
- 1:58name's sake. So Paul was going to suffer a
- 2:01great deal because he was a follower of now Jesus Christ.
- 2:07And we don't think about that. We become believers.
- 2:09We sometimes think that everything is going to be
- 2:12perfect and awesome and no more problems, no more worries, no
- 2:16more difficulties. But if you've been a Christian
- 2:19for any length of time, you know that's just part of the story,
- 2:22right? There is a lot of wonderful
- 2:23things we experience, a lot of joy, a lot of overcoming power
- 2:27in our life. We're not stuck in sin anymore,
- 2:30but the difficulties we struggle with many times have to do with
- 2:34people that don't want to identify with us anymore because
- 2:39we've become believers. Sometimes that happens in a
- 2:41household where maybe a husband becomes a believer in the wife
- 2:45isn't yet or vice versa, or kids that aren't interested or family
- 2:49members. And sometimes you're rejected by
- 2:51your own family because of your faith in the Lord and that's
- 2:54very, very painful to deal with. Also sometimes work, sometimes
- 2:58employers if they find out that you're and zealous through your
- 3:02faith and following Jesus Christ, they sometimes aren't
- 3:05interested in promoting you or maybe they're interested in
- 3:08eliminating your position. This has happened to many people
- 3:12even in our own country. And so I wanted to look at a
- 3:16couple verses regarding the difficulty that we have at times
- 3:20because we're Christians and just be upfront about what we do
- 3:25go through. And Second Timothy, Pastor Lewis
- 3:28had taught us on this a few weeks ago.
- 3:30But second Timothy chapter 3, this is a good reminder
- 3:35regarding what will happen when we become followers of Jesus
- 3:41Christ. It tells us in verse 11 he
- 3:45speaks about this issue of persevering and persecutions
- 3:50afflictions which happened to me at Antioch at Iconium at Lystra
- 3:54what persecutions I endured out of them all the Lord delivered
- 3:59me. Yes and all who desire to live
- 4:01godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
- 4:06I don't know if we were told that prior to becoming
- 4:09believers. If someone said by the way, if
- 4:11you commit your life to Christ and you really want to follow
- 4:15him and be serious about him. You're going to have some
- 4:18struggles in life persecution and how many people would be
- 4:21willing to sign up for that. No one told me that, so I just
- 4:26believe real simply, and I'm thankful I did.
- 4:28But if someone would have told me, if you become a believer,
- 4:31you're going to have a lot of struggles.
- 4:32I might have had to think about it a little bit, but now it's
- 4:36too late. I'm already a believer, I have
- 4:38gone through a lot and then we'll continually go through a
- 4:40lot as you guys do too, following Jesus Christ.
- 4:43But I wouldn't turn back or regret anything thus far in my
- 4:47life. Regardless of the challenges and
- 4:50difficulties that we experience as believers in Psalm chapter
- 4:5334, this is a tremendous encouragement.
- 4:56Psalm chapter 34. We'll flip through the Bible a
- 5:00little bit here before we get started in Acts 21 today, but I
- 5:03just wanted to sort of lay a foundation for why we go through
- 5:08what we go through, and how the Lord is there to help us
- 5:11continually. Psalm 34 verses 19 it says many
- 5:17are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers
- 5:20him out of them all. He guards all his bones, not one
- 5:24of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked, and
- 5:27those who hate the righteous shall be condemned.
- 5:30The Lord redeems the soul of His servants, and none of those who
- 5:34trust in him shall be condemned. I like what it says in verse 17
- 5:39of that Psalm. The righteous cry out and the
- 5:41Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.
- 5:45So we all go through challenges, difficulties, but we can be
- 5:48assured that when we call upon the Lord, he hears us and he
- 5:52will eventually bring us through the difficult times.
- 5:56And I love this. The Lord is near to those who
- 5:58have a broken heart and say such as have a contrite spirit.
- 6:02So when we're struggling, when our heart is broken, when we're
- 6:06overwhelmed, we call upon the Lord, we cry out to him, we ask
- 6:09for his help. He's always there to listen and
- 6:12come alongside of us and get us through those challenging times.
- 6:16Jesus himself and the Beatitudes in Matthew chapter 5 tells us
- 6:21how to deal with the challenges that we go through.
- 6:25It says in Matthew 10, blessed are those who are persecuted for
- 6:29righteousness sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of God.
- 6:33Blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you and say
- 6:37all kinds of evil against you falsely for my name's sake.
- 6:41Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in
- 6:45heaven. For so they persecuted the
- 6:47prophets who were before you. And Jesus has written this to
- 6:50all of us, and we are persecuted.
- 6:53We can thank the Lord that we are counted worthy as followers
- 6:57of Jesus Christ to be suffering and challenged at times and have
- 7:02difficulty from people who don't believe in the Lord and aren't
- 7:06interested in following Him at this point in time.
- 7:09And people watch how you and I walk through adversity and
- 7:12persecutions. We have to show one another that
- 7:17no matter how hard life can get at times and the challenges that
- 7:20we face, we're trusting the Lord, right?
- 7:23We're depending on him. We're not giving up, we're not
- 7:25complaining, we're not whining. We're just OK, I'm going to
- 7:29believe God in this challenge. And many times, you know, the
- 7:32persecution comes this not from people who are unbelievers, but
- 7:36it comes also from the enemy, the devil.
- 7:39He comes to steal, rob, kill and destroy.
- 7:42The devil is our enemies is not our friend and many times
- 7:46affliction, adversity, financial challenges, health issues,
- 7:51conflict. This is all part of what we deal
- 7:54with as followers of Jesus Christ in this world.
- 7:58Jesus said we will have tribulation, but he said be of
- 8:01good cheer have overcome the world.
- 8:04And then the apostle Paul himself that wrote the book of
- 8:08Romans, you know, he also verifies the fact and we know
- 8:13what he's been through and study more and acts what he went
- 8:15through. It says in verse 3.
- 8:17And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing
- 8:22that tribulation produces perseverance and perseverance,
- 8:25character and character hope. Now hope does not disappoint
- 8:29because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the
- 8:32Holy Spirit who was given to us. So when we have these challenges
- 8:38and these difficulties in our lives, they cause us to grow
- 8:41deeper in the Lord, don't they? They humble us.
- 8:46They make us realize that there's more to life than this.
- 8:51Focusing on what I can get from this present life in this world.
- 8:56Whenever I go through struggles and difficulties, it reflects
- 9:01upon my potential to be superficial as a Christian at
- 9:05times, not to be all in maybe or be sidetracked by something
- 9:10else. It's attracting my attention.
- 9:12And whenever a persecution comes, or an adversity or a
- 9:16trial or even a chastening of the Lord is discipline, whatever
- 9:20it causes me to, you know, get on my face before the Lord and
- 9:24begin to live for what really matters again, right?
- 9:28Not living for temporal stuff, not living for this, my own
- 9:31sense of my own opinion or my own feelings or my own hope to
- 9:36have everything go well all the time.
- 9:38It doesn't work that way. So the Lord allows the trials
- 9:42and we, none of us like him, none of us like the persecution,
- 9:45none of us like the afflictions, none of us like the tribulation,
- 9:48whatever term you want to call it.
- 9:50But we all have to go through these things because this is how
- 9:53God makes us more like himself, his Son, Jesus Christ.
- 9:57This is how we become conformed more to the image and likeness
- 10:01of Jesus. And the Bible is full of
- 10:04teaching on adversity. I don't know how some of these
- 10:08teachers on TV talk about, you know, the best life.
- 10:12Now, the best life is when you're with the Lord in heaven
- 10:14for all, all eternity, right? That's the that's what we're
- 10:17looking for. But in this world, we do have
- 10:20many joys and we and experience many joys and blessings.
- 10:24But we also have to understand that this is part of the
- 10:27identity of being Christians. It tells us in the book of
- 10:31Hebrews, it refers to some of the people that went through
- 10:35difficult times. It says some of these people
- 10:39that were used by the Lord in past times.
- 10:42They stopped the mouths of lions in Hebrews Chapter 11.
- 10:46They quenched the violence of fire.
- 10:49They escaped the edge of the sword out of weakness, were made
- 10:52strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight.
- 10:55The armies of the aliens women received their dead, raised to
- 10:58life again. Others were tortured, not
- 11:00accepting deliverance that they might obtain a better
- 11:03resurrection. Still others had trials of
- 11:06mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment.
- 11:09They were stoned, they were son, and two were tempted, were slain
- 11:13with the sword. They wandered about, and
- 11:15sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented,
- 11:19of whom the world was not worthy, they wandered in deserts
- 11:23and mountains and dens and caves of the earth.
- 11:25And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith,
- 11:29did not receive the promise. God having provided something
- 11:32better for us, that they should not be made perfect.
- 11:35Apart from us, all these people went through all these difficult
- 11:38trials and heartache and torture and adversity and pain, and they
- 11:43didn't see what we have experience in regard to the
- 11:46death, burial and resurrection of Christ.
- 11:48They were looking forward to that.
- 11:50Now we look back and we remember what Christ did and how he
- 11:53suffered for us. And so when we go through
- 11:56suffering, Jesus makes us partners together with him
- 12:00because if we're going to take part in the resurrection, it
- 12:03says we're also going to have to endure the sufferings that
- 12:07Christ went through personally. We identify with these things
- 12:10ourselves. And it's a wonderful thing when
- 12:13you can see it from a biblical perspective that whatever you
- 12:16may be going through, you're not alone.
- 12:19People in countless years of history before you and I have
- 12:23gone through things that have been even more difficult and
- 12:26more challenging to deal with. And Paul also says in verse 10
- 12:31of 2nd Corinthians 12, therefore, I take pleasure in
- 12:35infirmities and reproaches and needs and persecutions and
- 12:39distress for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am
- 12:43strong. Amen.
- 12:45So whenever we get beaten down and we feel like we can't go on
- 12:48and we're overwhelmed and just, you know, like over everything
- 12:52that's happening in life, we just don't want to have to deal
- 12:54with it or whatever the Holy Spirit comes upon us, encourages
- 12:58us. And all of a sudden we realize
- 13:00that we're strongest when we're weakest, when we're weak in
- 13:03ourselves, we're strong in the Lord.
- 13:05And that's the upside of the challenges that we go through
- 13:09now since we're hitting on difficulties regarding these
- 13:13kind of situations in life. I wanted to read something here
- 13:16in regards to persecution. This is important to know
- 13:20because right now in our country, we still have the
- 13:23ability to do what we're doing today.
- 13:25No one's going to break in here and tell us we can't worship.
- 13:28No one's going to handcuff me and say, well, you, we're taking
- 13:30you to jail and you're never going to be able to talk about
- 13:33this stuff again. That's happening in places in
- 13:35the world right now. It's hard for us to understand
- 13:38that, but it's true. One in eight Christians
- 13:40worldwide live in countries where they may face persecution.
- 13:45So one in eight people are facing unbelievable situations.
- 13:50Open Doors and international NGO advocating on behalf of
- 13:54persecuted Christians released their annual World Watch List.
- 13:58The World Watch List assesses 50 countries where Christians face
- 14:02the most severe types of persecution.
- 14:05The newly published data reveals that during the reporting
- 14:08period, and this is from October and 2019 through September a
- 14:12couple years later, more than 340 million Christians were
- 14:16living in countries and where they might suffer high levels of
- 14:20persecution and discrimination because of their faith.
- 14:23Among this #309,000,000 Christians were living in
- 14:27countries where they would experience unbelievable
- 14:31situations that one in eight worldwide, one in six in Africa,
- 14:35two out of five in Asia, and one in 12 in Latin America.
- 14:40It researched this time that Christians. 4761 Christians were
- 14:45killed for their faith. 4488 churches or Christian buildings
- 14:51were attacked. 4277 Christians were unjustly arrested, detained
- 14:57or in prison. 17110 Christians were abducted for faith related
- 15:01reasons. On average every day 13
- 15:04Christians are killed for their faith. 12 churches or Christian
- 15:07buildings were attacked. 12 Christians are unjustly
- 15:10arrested, detained, or in prison and five Christians are abducted
- 15:14for faith related reason. It's hard to comprehend that
- 15:18this is occurring right now throughout the world.
- 15:21Extreme levels of persecution. Some of these places are so
- 15:26radically insane that you would never consider wanting to be a
- 15:30missionary in North Korea ranks #1 as a world's worst persecutor
- 15:35of Christians. For the 20th consecutive year,
- 15:38being a Christian in North Korea is a death sentence.
- 15:41If not killed, Christians are taken to labor camps as
- 15:44political criminals. Kim Jong Un is reported to have
- 15:47expanded the system of prison camps in which an estimated 50
- 15:51to 70,000 Christians are currently in prison.
- 15:55Nigeria also entered the top 10 for the first time, reaching a
- 16:00maximum violence score. Nigerian Christians face violent
- 16:04attacks from Islamic extremist groups including Boko Haram,
- 16:08Falami Muslim militia, Dairish affiliate, especially in
- 16:12northern Nigeria. In the Middle Belt and Nigeria,
- 16:15men and boys are particularly vulnerable to being killed.
- 16:18The women and children they leave behind are often displaced
- 16:21to informal camps, face sexual violence, or even at risk of
- 16:25abduction and forced marriage. China has entered the top 20 for
- 16:28the first time in a decade due to ongoing and increasing
- 16:32surveillance and censorship of Christians and other religious
- 16:35minorities in China. The policy of Since sizing the
- 16:39church has been implemented nationwide as a Communist Party
- 16:43limits whatever it perceives as a threat to its role in
- 16:46ideology. Thousands of churches have been
- 16:49damaged or closed. In some parts of China, children
- 16:52under the age of 18 aren't allowed to attend church, part
- 16:55of the country's effort to stunt future growth.
- 16:58While China is ranked 17th as a place where Christians are
- 17:01subjected to high level persecution, the situation of
- 17:05all religious groups China is dire and has been deteriorating
- 17:08over recent years. Considering the current trends
- 17:11of persecution in China, it's expected that China will be
- 17:14topping the list soon with North Korea as a worse place to live
- 17:19as a Christian. I mean, there's an agenda that
- 17:22the world has to basically eliminate Christianity from the
- 17:25face of the earth. And so that's why it's even more
- 17:28important for now for churches like ours to be simply teaching
- 17:32the Bible simply verse by verse, day by day, week by week, month
- 17:35by month, year by year. Having young people over there
- 17:39getting discipled in the truth of the gospel so that their
- 17:42worldview is a biblical worldview.
- 17:44And they can stand against all this agenda of all this
- 17:47godlessness that's occurring at the top levels of our government
- 17:51today. We have to pray like we've never
- 17:53prayed before, intercede, get before the Lord.
- 17:56The Lord knows what's happening, but He's only going to move in
- 17:59the degree that we're all committed together as a group of
- 18:03people in our nation to pray for our country and that we can be 1
- 18:09nation under God again. For right now, we are one nation
- 18:12under secular humanism and moral relativism.
- 18:15You and I are one nation under God.
- 18:17We're the remnant, we're the church, we're the believers.
- 18:19But the ongoing issues of our ideology, of our governmental
- 18:24system right now and denouncing our Constitution, among many
- 18:28other things, freedom of religion, freedom of rights,
- 18:31culture wars, everything is occurring right now to divide
- 18:34people and to cause more and more chaos in our world.
- 18:38We need to just simply keep teaching the truth.
- 18:41And Jesus told us that these things would occur in the last
- 18:45days. And so the last days could be
- 18:48another 1000 years. I don't know.
- 18:50They felt like Paul and those guys, they all felt that they
- 18:54were in the last days in the book of the Acts.
- 18:56But obviously it's been 2000 years.
- 18:58So the Lord's on the scene, He's on the way.
- 19:01He's with us. He'll never leave us or forsake
- 19:03us. But that's why it's important to
- 19:05study the Bible so that when you were going through trials and
- 19:08you're going through difficulties and things, you'd
- 19:10understand. You go back to the Scriptures
- 19:13and you're reminded God's got it all under control, doesn't He?
- 19:16Amen. He's on the throne.
- 19:19No matter what we read, no matter what we see, no matter
- 19:22what we hear, His will is going to be completely, 100%
- 19:28ultimately accomplished. And that's what gives us the
- 19:31encouragement to keep on keeping on.
- 19:34So turning your Bibles to Acts 21, this is the subtitle.
- 19:38My Bible says warnings on the journey to Jerusalem.
- 19:41So Paul has been persecuted at times.
- 19:44He's been put in jail for a day or two.
- 19:46But it's going to get a lot worse for him in these remaining
- 19:49chapters of Acts. Now it came to pass that when he
- 19:52had departed from them he set sail, running a straight course
- 19:56we came to cost. The following day it arose, and
- 19:59from there to Partara, and finding a ship sailing over to
- 20:03Phoenicia, we went aboard and set sail.
- 20:06And when we had sighted Cyprus, we passed it on the left, sailed
- 20:11to Syria and landed a tire, for there the ship was to unload her
- 20:15cargo. And finding disciples, we stayed
- 20:18there seven days. So the wonderful thing is that
- 20:21they found believers and they want to have some fellowship
- 20:24now. So let's pray.
- 20:25Father God, we are here today as a body of Christ believers to
- 20:29encourage one another to build each other up.
- 20:32That's the very presence of every life here today represents
- 20:35people who are following you and trusting in you and living for
- 20:39you, Lord, and your Kingdom. And from your vantage point, we
- 20:43are the majority because heaven and earth will pass away, that
- 20:48all those who do the will of God and the truth of the Word of God
- 20:52will abide forever. You promise us these things,
- 20:55Lord. So as we study today, we humble
- 20:58our hearts before you that we might be able to be taught by
- 21:01your Holy Spirit. Because you resist the proud,
- 21:03You give grace to the humble. In Your name, Lord Jesus, I
- 21:06humble myself along with my brothers and sisters that we
- 21:10would be open to believe and no need to believe, but live out
- 21:14the things we learned today and we pray all these things in
- 21:17Jesus name, Amen. So he's there fellowshipping
- 21:22with people. Some of these people he never
- 21:25met before. I'm sure most of them he didn't.
- 21:27He knew maybe something about them.
- 21:29They were a result of the persecution that occurred in the
- 21:33early part of the church and Acts, where churches spread out
- 21:36and those regions and so many, many people became followers of
- 21:39Christ. Paul wasn't responsible for
- 21:41every church plan or every move that had occurred at that part
- 21:45of the world at that time. And so they began to speak to
- 21:48Paul. They told Paul through the
- 21:50Spirit not to go up to Jerusalem.
- 21:54The Holy Spirit's laying it upon their hearts to tell Paul that
- 21:57it isn't a good idea to go to Jerusalem.
- 22:01OK, He's hearing it right from them.
- 22:04And when he had come to the end of those days, we departed, and
- 22:06we went on our way, and they all accompanied us with wives and
- 22:10children till we were out of the city, and we knelt down on the
- 22:13shore and prayed. And when he had taken our leave
- 22:17of one another, we boarded the ship and they returned home.
- 22:21And what a beautiful setting. I'm an ocean guy.
- 22:24And boy, I'll tell you, nothing better than praying on the
- 22:26beach, right? And he's there with his brothers
- 22:28and sisters and saying goodbye. And the kids are there and the
- 22:31families are there and they're just worshiping the Lord and
- 22:34they're praying for Godspeed and blessing upon the apostle Paul.
- 22:38So you can mark in your notes, that's one warning right there
- 22:41that he shouldn't go to Jerusalem.
- 22:43Verse 7. And when he had finished our
- 22:46voyage from Tyre, we came to put Talamas and greeted the brethren
- 22:51and stayed with them one day. On the next day we who were
- 22:55Paul's companions departed and came to Caesarea and entered the
- 22:59House of Philip the Evangelist who was one of the seven and
- 23:02stayed with him. You remember Philip had
- 23:04witnessed to the Ethiopian eunuch.
- 23:07He was one of the seven that was picked to help serve tables in
- 23:10the church. The church was growing so much
- 23:12they needed physical help to take care of the widows and some
- 23:15of the other issues in the church.
- 23:17But these are spirit filled men, gifted men with callings and
- 23:21teaching abilities and preaching and evangelistic opportunities.
- 23:25Philip was one of these seven and he went down and he went and
- 23:29preached to the Ethiopian eunuch.
- 23:31That guy ended up getting saved after he heard Philip explain
- 23:35what Isaiah 53 meant. And eventually he baptized this
- 23:38man in the water, complete immersion, baptized him in the
- 23:43river there, and he came up. And then Philip was translated
- 23:47and This is why he was able to go from 1:00 point in time and
- 23:51space, and he was taken to another place approximately 3035
- 23:54miles away. We're so glad you joined us
- 23:58today on this edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:01Pastor Clark is teaching through the book of Acts, which is the
- 24:04only book that chronicles the history of the early church
- 24:08immediately after Jesus's ascension.
- 24:11It gives us a front row seat to how the Gospel began to move
- 24:15outward, starting in Jerusalem and reaching into the heart of
- 24:18the Roman Empire. In just three decades, a small
- 24:22group of frightened ordinary believers became a bold, spirit
- 24:26empowered movement that transformed the known world.
- 24:30Acts is not just a history lesson.
- 24:32It's a reminder of what God can do when His people are
- 24:35surrendered, obedient, and filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 24:40Their perseverance still inspires us today.
- 24:44May we follow their example and live faithfully for Christ in
- 24:47our own time. We hope today's message
