Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily Abadi here, you are listening to another
- 0:21Speaker 1: installment of Five Minute Friday. Now, if you're new to
- 0:24Speaker 1: the show, welcome, you are now officially a hurdler on
- 0:28Speaker 1: five Minute Friday. This segment is all about just giving
- 0:32Speaker 1: you some thoughts about where I'm at finishing off the
- 0:35Speaker 1: week and doing it on a high note.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I offer you a prompt.
- 0:39Speaker 1: To take you into the weekend or whenever you are
- 0:42Speaker 1: listening to this to get your thoughts moving, and then
- 0:46Speaker 1: I share an answer to a listener question for five
- 0:51Speaker 1: Minute Friday this week. I mean, what's going on in
- 0:53Speaker 1: my head is the fact that it is official Hurdle finally,
- 0:58Speaker 1: four million.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Downloads all time.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It's crazy, you know, oftentimes when these milestones happen, whether
- 1:06Speaker 1: you know it's a million milestone or a birthday. Hurdle's
- 1:09Speaker 1: birthday happens to be like right around New Year's Day
- 1:12Speaker 1: when I released it in twenty eighteen. But when these
- 1:16Speaker 1: big moments happen, I can't help but think to myself
- 1:22Speaker 1: that it wouldn't be happening if I never started at all.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And I think that that is something that a lot
- 1:28Speaker 1: of us struggle with in a lot of different aspects
- 1:30Speaker 1: of our lives, right, Like when it comes to our
- 1:34Speaker 1: own personal wellness journeys, and we want to maybe get
- 1:37Speaker 1: into a new style of fitness. Maybe you want to
- 1:40Speaker 1: start running, or you want to walk more regularly, or
- 1:44Speaker 1: you want to try CrossFit, or you want to take
- 1:46Speaker 1: a hit class, and you feel like this level of intimidation, right,
- 1:51Speaker 1: this level of uncertainty because getting acquainted with something well,
- 1:54Speaker 1: that involves change, and that involves you putting yourself in
- 1:58Speaker 1: a new space and stepping outside of.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Your comfort zone.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And for me, like with Hurdle, please total new space
- 2:06Speaker 1: for me, Like I admittedly had hardly listened to a
- 2:11Speaker 1: podcast before deciding that I wanted to start one of
- 2:15Speaker 1: my own.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I didn't know anything.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Or at least very little, but I committed to learning, right,
- 2:21Speaker 1: I committed to trying that new thing. I reached out
- 2:25Speaker 1: to people in the space and I asked them questions.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I bought myself a microphone and I just started talking
- 2:32Speaker 1: to people. And I didn't have again all of the answers,
- 2:36Speaker 1: but what I did have was a passion for storytelling
- 2:39Speaker 1: and a passion to just give it my all. I
- 2:41Speaker 1: knew going into it, and this is another huge lesson
- 2:44Speaker 1: that I've learned over the past four million downloads is
- 2:47Speaker 1: that you've got to trust your gut and sometimes you've
- 2:51Speaker 1: got to jump before you're ready. And with so many,
- 2:54Speaker 1: you know, big asks, reaching out to guests, talking to sponsors,
- 2:59Speaker 1: so much of that was me just one hundred percent
- 3:03Speaker 1: winging it. And in these scenarios it was really like, well,
- 3:07Speaker 1: the worst thing that can happen in this moment is
- 3:09Speaker 1: that someone can tell you know, someone can say, hmm,
- 3:12Speaker 1: I don't really want to be on that show. A
- 3:14Speaker 1: sponsor could say, hmmm, that price sounds like a little
- 3:17Speaker 1: too much for us, or whatever. And I have gotten
- 3:22Speaker 1: very used to know over the last four years. But
- 3:26Speaker 1: what that does for me is it makes the yes
- 3:30Speaker 1: moments so much sweeter. But going back to this idea
- 3:35Speaker 1: of just starting of just putting yourself out there, I
- 3:39Speaker 1: never envisioned four years ago that I'd be sitting in
- 3:43Speaker 1: a dedicated home office space designed to record with other
- 3:47Speaker 1: people one day who knows, sometime soon, I hope, thank
- 3:52Speaker 1: you COVID, But does this in this office space with
- 3:56Speaker 1: two microphones and a neon sign and a massive silver
- 4:00Speaker 1: Milar balloon that says the number four and would have
- 4:04Speaker 1: been featured in the New York Times, and today I
- 4:08Speaker 1: was in Vogue, Like are you kidding?
- 4:11Speaker 2: Are you effing kidding?
- 4:13Speaker 1: I never thought that this was gonna happen, And to
- 4:16Speaker 1: be honest, like I didn't even have a thought of
- 4:19Speaker 1: like where I wanted to go with this. I just
- 4:21Speaker 1: knew what I wanted to do, and what I wanted
- 4:23Speaker 1: to do was connect with individuals all over the country
- 4:26Speaker 1: to empower them on their own personal wellness journeys and
- 4:30Speaker 1: make them feel less alone. I remember feeling so alone
- 4:34Speaker 1: when I started mine back early in college. And all
- 4:37Speaker 1: link to episode one where you can hear more about
- 4:40Speaker 1: my past and the show notes. But all of this
- 4:43Speaker 1: to say is that I knew what I wanted to do.
- 4:45Speaker 1: I wanted to help people. I knew that I could
- 4:48Speaker 1: do that via a podcast. And now it just blows
- 4:50Speaker 1: my mind that four million times someone has opened up
- 4:54Speaker 1: their podcast feed wherever they get their podcasts, and hopefully
- 5:00Speaker 1: prection of those times someone walked away with something, some
- 5:05Speaker 1: sort of nugget of inspiration of piece of advice that
- 5:08Speaker 1: they were able to use in their day today. And
- 5:12Speaker 1: so this little rambly rant on this five minute Friday
- 5:16Speaker 1: is twofold. It's one to say thank you to all
- 5:20Speaker 1: of you with the hurdlers. Without you, you give me
- 5:23Speaker 1: so much purpose and you give me so much life,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and I appreciate it so much when I get the
- 5:30Speaker 1: messages and the emails of people thinking me. But really,
- 5:33Speaker 1: what I want you to know is that you are
- 5:36Speaker 1: my why you are giving me so much more than
- 5:39Speaker 1: I can even possibly try to articulate here. And the
- 5:42Speaker 1: second fold again is just if there's something that you've
- 5:44Speaker 1: been thinking about, a mission, that you have something, a dream,
- 5:48Speaker 1: a goal, a wish, like, just act on it. You know,
- 5:51Speaker 1: like there's no time like the present. Every day is
- 5:55Speaker 1: a gift and an opportunity and you have to grab
- 5:58Speaker 1: that opportunity go after the things that you really really want.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Oh so many feels.
- 6:05Speaker 1: My prompt for you this week, what is one thing
- 6:09Speaker 1: you've been holding off on that you want to start?
- 6:12Speaker 2: And when? When are you gonna do that?
- 6:14Speaker 1: What is one thing that you have been holding off
- 6:16Speaker 1: on that you want to start? And now a listener question.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Hey, Emily, my name is Annie and I started listening
- 6:26Speaker 3: to your Hurdle podcast this year and I look forward
- 6:28Speaker 3: to it every single week. I just finished listening to.
- 6:32Speaker 4: The podcast you had Rainy Howard about relationships, and it
- 6:35Speaker 4: really resonated with me after just recently getting HINT and
- 6:38Speaker 4: finding myself lowering my standards for these guides that I
- 6:42Speaker 4: see these constant red flags and just.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Like being hung on to things. I guess my question
- 6:48Speaker 3: is like, how do you maintain your standards, your space,
- 6:51Speaker 3: your worth when you're dating and just like not be afraid,
- 6:54Speaker 3: just like put yourself out there, but still like keep
- 6:57Speaker 3: your own confidence and I don't know, I just like
- 7:00Speaker 3: to hear your thoughts on that. Thank you so much.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Ooh, this is a good one, Okay. Owning your worth
- 7:06Speaker 1: in relationships. Honestly, this really starts with determining and establishing
- 7:12Speaker 1: your sense of self worth because your level of self
- 7:16Speaker 1: care overall impacts your well being, and others cannot fill
- 7:22Speaker 1: a void that you may be creating when it comes
- 7:24Speaker 1: to articulating your value. You know, it's so easy for
- 7:28Speaker 1: us to neglect ourselves and deprive ourselves of what we
- 7:32Speaker 1: might need, and that could be anything from encouragement or
- 7:35Speaker 1: connection or reassurance to consideration and attention and care. There's
- 7:41Speaker 1: so much that we need as humans, and often if
- 7:46Speaker 1: we aren't providing that for ourselves, then we look to
- 7:50Speaker 1: other people to provide it for us. But the problem
- 7:53Speaker 1: in that is that we then mistakenly believe that this
- 7:57Speaker 1: pain that we are experiencing because this void is something
- 8:01Speaker 1: that can only be fixed by another, and that is
- 8:04Speaker 1: so not true. You need to show up for you,
- 8:08Speaker 1: and once you can articulate your worth, once you know
- 8:11Speaker 1: how awesome that you are, I'm telling you, hear it,
- 8:16Speaker 1: then you will better be able to manage a situation
- 8:20Speaker 1: where you realize that someone is not valuing that. And
- 8:23Speaker 1: it's hard to be honest sometimes in those situations because
- 8:27Speaker 1: we are made to feel if at one time they
- 8:30Speaker 1: were giving us what we needed and then the next
- 8:32Speaker 1: moment they are not that. Well, this person was capable
- 8:36Speaker 1: of giving me what I needed, so I know it
- 8:38Speaker 1: can happen again, But if it to pattern and it
- 8:42Speaker 1: keeps not happening and they keep making you feel like
- 8:46Speaker 1: you're not important enough, that you have got to walk period.
- 8:50Speaker 2: End of story.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Of course, there is value in trying to communicate with
- 8:54Speaker 1: this person, and the right person will hear you communicating
- 8:58Speaker 1: and make a pattern, shit will recognize your value, will
- 9:02Speaker 1: work with you to make you feel appreciated it's easier
- 9:07Speaker 1: so than done. Our heart makes life really effing tricky sometimes.
- 9:12Speaker 1: But know that if you feel like something is off,
- 9:16Speaker 1: you deserve to talk about it, to do something about it,
- 9:20Speaker 1: and not to feel trapped in this scenario. Life's too short, man,
- 9:26Speaker 1: It's too short. And I'll be frank like my sense
- 9:29Speaker 1: of self worth and what I know that I deserve
- 9:32Speaker 1: and ultimately what I'm looking for. I am so firm
- 9:36Speaker 1: in these ideas that, yeah, sometimes I ask myself, like,
- 9:41Speaker 1: am I ever going to find this thing? But I
- 9:43Speaker 1: would rather spend all of these years and all of
- 9:47Speaker 1: this time doing this solo right then sacrificing, you know,
- 9:54Speaker 1: the things that I want and the life that I
- 9:57Speaker 1: dream of because someone else can't handle when I have
- 9:59Speaker 1: to bring to the table. Who a little female empowerment
- 10:04Speaker 1: to get you to the weekend, You are welcome. Make
- 10:07Speaker 1: sure you are following along over on social media at
- 10:10Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast.
- 10:11Speaker 2: I am over at Emily a Body.
- 10:13Speaker 1: By the time you are listening to this, if you're
- 10:16Speaker 1: listening to it early on Friday morning, August thirteenth, I
- 10:20Speaker 1: will be hopefully finishing a very very long run that
- 10:24Speaker 1: was probably very difficult because it's going to be obscenely
- 10:28Speaker 1: hot here in New York City tomorrow, so feel free
- 10:31Speaker 1: to shoot me some words of encouragement or a DM.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I appreciate you, I appreciate this community again. Thank you
- 10:37Speaker 1: so much for four million. I can't imagine my life
- 10:41Speaker 1: without you. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
