- 0:00We tend to evaluate events or circumstances based on their
- 0:05relation to our personal identification with the external
- 0:08ego personality and our prevalent idea about ourselves
- 0:13at that point in time. In retrospect, we frequently
- 0:18find that those things which we considered to be bad were
- 0:22actually the starting point of an entirely new development,
- 0:26which turned out to be far better than what we anticipated
- 0:30at the time of the bad event that interfered with our
- 0:34preconceived notions. For example, there was the case
- 0:39of a college student who excelled at his studies and had
- 0:42career goals in his mind. At a certain point, he had a
- 0:45near death experience, and after that he recognized that the
- 0:50entire college career was actually wasting his time.
- 0:54He left college, began a spiritual quest, and found
- 0:58fulfillment in the integration of that spiritual purpose into
- 1:02his life. In retrospect, he reported that
- 1:06the circumstances that disrupted his plans was not a bad thing,
- 1:11but a good thing. Another example was related in
- 1:16the book called To Heal. A particular young woman in
- 1:19Africa had ideas about the direction her career and life
- 1:23should go. She kept having obstacles
- 1:26showing up in her way, whether disappointments in her career
- 1:29development or health issues that kept arising.
- 1:34She eventually consulted an experienced healer who advised
- 1:38her that all these problems would disappear if she took up
- 1:41her true calling of being a shamanic healer.
- 1:45Eventually she heeded that advice and found out that in
- 1:49fact, what she thought was bad luck earlier in her life as to
- 1:54career and health, turned out to be the start of the change in
- 1:58focus and new avenues of fulfillment she found once she
- 2:02made the transition. Paramount's Yogananda told the
- 2:07story of a person he met who was practising a yogic discipline
- 2:11and did not eat solid food. She was vigorous, alert and
- 2:17focused on her practice. She did not consider herself to
- 2:21be starving. Another person not having solid
- 2:25food might be suffering starvation, and yet another
- 2:30could be practising the restriction as part of either a
- 2:33short term practice of fasting or a longer term attempt to lose
- 2:38weight through dieting. In each case, the individual is
- 2:42not eating solid food, but their interpretation and their results
- 2:48are vastly different. Quantum mechanics illustrates
- 2:53for us the fact that one is not simply a victim of events, but
- 2:57that as a participant observer, one also influences the outcome
- 3:02of events. This provides an area for
- 3:06fruitful contemplation about how we can gain mastery in our
- 3:09lives, as opposed to simply becoming the victim of whatever
- 3:14happens to be taking place. Of course, in some events that
- 3:19are on the world scale, the event itself will still take
- 3:23place, but the individual response to it may find a
- 3:27different interpretation and a different value than what others
- 3:32may experience. One person's solid poise and
- 3:37balance under difficult circumstances can also make a
- 3:40difference for those around him. The story was related about a
- 3:44protest against the Vietnam War back in the 1970s in the USA.
- 3:50The heavily armed police surrounded a crowd of peaceful
- 3:53protesters and people felt intimidated and fearful.
- 3:58Then one individual began to chant Ohm and others took it up.
- 4:04The crowd lost its fear, and while they were arrested and
- 4:09later released without charges, the atmosphere that developed
- 4:13from the chanting of OM and the crowd responds to it made it
- 4:17clear that something very special had taken place,
- 4:20changing a potentially harmful, dangerous and intimidating
- 4:25circumstance in the one that had no serious unpleasant
- 4:30consequences for anyone, the mother writes.
- 4:35Quote. There is a state in which one
- 4:38realizes that the effect of things, circumstances, all the
- 4:43movements and actions of life on the consciousness depends almost
- 4:47exclusively upon one's attitude to these things.
- 4:51There is a moment when one becomes sufficiently conscious
- 4:55to realize that things in themselves are truly neither
- 4:59good nor bad. They are this only in relation
- 5:03to us. Their effect on us depends
- 5:06absolutely upon the attitude we have towards them.
- 5:10The same thing identically the same.
- 5:13If we take it as a gift of God, as a divine grace, as the result
- 5:19of the full harmony, helps us to become more conscious, stronger,
- 5:25more true. While if we take it exactly the
- 5:29very same circumstance as a blow from fate, as a bad force
- 5:35wanting to affect us, this constricts us, weighs us down,
- 5:40and takes away from us all consciousness and strength and
- 5:43harmony. And the circumstance in itself
- 5:47is exactly the same. Of this I should like you all to
- 5:52have the experience, For when you have it, you become master
- 5:57of yourself, Not only master of yourself, but in what concerns
- 6:02you, master of the circumstances of your life.
- 6:06And this depends exclusively upon the attitude you take.
- 6:10It is not an experience that occurs in the head, though it
- 6:13begins there, but an experience which can occur in the body
- 6:18itself. So much so that, well, it is a
- 6:22realization which naturally asks for a lot of work,
- 6:26concentration, self mastery, consciousness pushed into
- 6:30matter. But as a result, in accordance
- 6:35with the way the body receives shocks from outside, the effect
- 6:39may be different. And if you attain perfection in
- 6:43that field, you become master of accidents.
- 6:47I hope this will happen. It is possible.
- 6:51It is not only possible, it is certain only.
- 6:55It is just one step forward. That is, this power you have
- 7:01already fully and formidably realized in the mind to act upon
- 7:06circumstances to the extent of changing them totally in their
- 7:10action upon you. That power can descend into
- 7:14matter, into the physical substance itself, the cells of
- 7:18the body, and give the same power to the body in relation to
- 7:22the things around it. This is not a faith, it is a
- 7:26certitude that comes from experience.
