- 0:00My name is Tyler Griffin. And I'm Daniel Smith.
- 0:03For today, what we're going to do is, I'll I'll begin by
- 0:07walking you through the final week of the Savior's life, kind
- 0:12of giving you a a bit of a virtual tour of Jerusalem at the
- 0:15time of Jesus through those those different events leading
- 0:19up to his resurrection. And then I'm going to be going
- 0:22over a somewhat similar, but except with an emphasis on the
- 0:26Passover and talking about the connections and the the
- 0:30significance of how Passover teaches us about the atonement
- 0:35and helps us really better understand why it's so
- 0:37significant that Jesus chose the timing to be exactly during the
- 0:41time of Passover. What you're looking at is a
- 0:45depiction, a a digital recreation of the Temple.
- 0:51Herod's Second Temple is what we traditionally call it in
- 0:55Jerusalem. Now this is temple mounted is
- 0:57the dominant feature of the city of Jerusalem.
- 1:01So if we click right here, you can see a bird's eye view of the
- 1:05city at the time of Jesus. If you were to take this city
- 1:10and pick it up and put it into our modern world, it's just
- 1:13under one square mile. For those of you who are
- 1:16familiar with with Provo and the campus of Brigham Young
- 1:20University, this city would overlay almost perfectly on the
- 1:26campus of BYU today, just under a square mile, you'll notice
- 1:31Temple Mount is right here on Mount Moriah.
- 1:35Mount Zion is higher up than Mount Moriah and the Terropian
- 1:41Valley goes in between them with the two valleys on the sides,
- 1:45the Kidron Valley and the Hinnom Valley.
- 1:48So this is where it all takes place, that final week of
- 1:53Jesus's life. Here's the overview.
- 1:57Jesus begins the week of the atoning sacrifice.
- 2:01With his triumphal entry, he starts over the Mount of Olives.
- 2:05So here's the Mount of Olives. Gethsemane is here at the base
- 2:08of the Mount of Olives, to the east of Jerusalem.
- 2:11On the other side of the Mount of Olives we have Bethany and
- 2:15Bethpage. That's where Jesus begins on the
- 2:18Sunday Palm Sunday the week before Easter.
- 2:23So he rides on the the donkey or the mule down the Kidron Valley,
- 2:30which is a beautiful symbol. If you if you want to do some
- 2:34study to cross, compare this with First Kings chapter one,
- 2:40where David is on his deathbed and he has his son Solomon
- 2:46placed on a mule in the Kidron Valley near the Guihon Spring,
- 2:52and there he is anointed the King of Israel, the son of David
- 2:56as the King of Israel. When Jesus rides down the Kidron
- 3:00Valley the people are going to be shouting Hosanna.
- 3:04Blessed is he who cometh in in the name of the Lord.
- 3:07Blessed is the Son of David. They see him as the fulfillment
- 3:13of the prophecy that the Messiah will come as a son of David and
- 3:19take the Davidic throne again. So Jesus's week begins with a
- 3:25very, very triumphal entry. They are shouting things to him
- 3:30from from Psalm 118. It's this praise Psalm, kind of
- 3:36the coming of the Lord Psalm. He goes in and if you follow
- 3:41Matthew's chronology, he's going to go into the temple and he's
- 3:45going to cleanse the temple. If we shift our focus over here
- 3:49as an overview of the temple, you're now looking down into the
- 3:51court of the women right there, and you turn your view.
- 3:56That's the royal stoa. This is Solomon's Porch.
- 4:02So all of these porticoes, these covered areas around the outer
- 4:07side, outer courtyard of the Temple Mount, people are going
- 4:11to be coming in huge numbers to Jerusalem during Passover, which
- 4:16is the time that Jesus is here to perform that infinite
- 4:21atonement. So there are lots of people here
- 4:25thronging the city of Jerusalem from all over the diaspora
- 4:28coming in. So when he cleanses the temple,
- 4:32we're talking a huge number of people.
- 4:35And it's not just a little building, this Temple Mount.
- 4:39You could fit 26 American football fields onto Temple
- 4:45Mount. It's expansive.
- 4:47It's it's big. And he's cleansing the temple
- 4:52and then bringing in people who are sick and afflicted and
- 4:56healing them. There's beautiful symbolism
- 4:58there, and we can go into greater depth on each of these
- 5:01stories later on. This is intended just to be an
- 5:05overview of this week. It's interesting because Matthew
- 5:08has the triumphal entry, then the cleansing of the temple that
- 5:11day. Mark, his gospel, has the
- 5:13triumphal entry. He comes in and he sees what's
- 5:16going on in the temple. Then he goes back to Bethany in
- 5:19the next day, when he comes into the temple, he curses the fig
- 5:23tree on the way in. Then he goes in and he cleanses
- 5:27the temple. So I don't know which one's
- 5:30right. They both have beautiful
- 5:32symbolic power associated with them.
- 5:34Whichever 1 had the timing exactly right on these events,
- 5:39but the point is, is that Jesus demonstrates incredible power in
- 5:43in both of these miracles. And then he spends Monday
- 5:48teaching the people in the temple.
- 5:51And it gets kind of fuzzy as to the order of all of the events
- 5:55on the specific days. But tradition holds that he's
- 5:58teaching in the temple on Monday and Tuesday.
- 6:02Some would argue that we don't have anything for Wednesday.
- 6:06Others would say, well, there's some of these parables that
- 6:08maybe are being taught on the Wednesday at the end of the day.
- 6:12That doesn't matter nearly as much as the fact that Jesus is
- 6:15now preparing for that final, final event, the infinite
- 6:20atonement that he he has covenanted to fulfill for all of
- 6:25us. Thursday he goes into the upper
- 6:30room. The traditional site is going to
- 6:32be somewhere around here up on Mount Zion, but that site was
- 6:37built very late in in the calendar early 12th century I
- 6:42believe. I can't remember the the
- 6:43specifics, but it's it's doesn't date back to the time of Jesus,
- 6:47but the site is the traditional site.
- 6:49It could have been somewhere down here closer to the pool of
- 6:52Siloam. We don't know.
- 6:53Anyway, he gathers his apostles for the Last Supper on what we
- 6:59would call Thursday. Now, just a really quick note on
- 7:01timing for the Jews. When the sunsets, it flips your
- 7:07calendar to the new day. So they begin the day at sunset.
- 7:10We begin ours at midnight. Very different.
- 7:13So for him, the Last Supper takes place at the beginning of
- 7:18Friday for him because the calendar flipped when Thursday
- 7:22night's sunset. So he's in that upper room.
- 7:26They share that Passover meal or a meal that has Passover
- 7:31elements, depending on whether you like John's version or
- 7:34Matthew, Mark and Luke. The Synoptics version.
- 7:37Matthew, Mark and Luke say that it was the Passover meal that
- 7:40year. John says that the Passover meal
- 7:43was going to be the next day, and there's beautiful symbol
- 7:46symbolism. Once again with both of those we
- 7:50don't intend to turn this into a battle between the different
- 7:53gospel accounts and make you pick pick your your favorite or
- 7:57pick a winner. It's let's take their view,
- 8:00their lens of Jesus and the events and and enjoy what we can
- 8:05and learn what we can from each one.
- 8:08When Jesus finishes that Last Supper event with them, he then
- 8:12leaves that upper room. They go up the Kidron Valley.
- 8:18So from here down to there, up to the garden called Gethsemane
- 8:22would be about a mile, a little, maybe even a little bit over a
- 8:26mile depending on where he was in the city of a walk.
- 8:29Keep in mind, it's Passover, which happens on the first full
- 8:31moon after the spring equinox. So this is a full moon tonight
- 8:36when Jesus goes goes up that valley and he's on this side of
- 8:41the Kidron Brook when he offers his intercessory prayer in John
- 8:4517. And then he walks into the
- 8:49garden and begins the process of this, this infinite agony, this
- 8:55infinite price that needs to be paid for our souls to redeem us.
- 9:00Judas brings the band of men. They arrest him here.
- 9:03Jesus is then taken back into the city, and he's taken to
- 9:08Caiaphas's palace, where he's judged, where he's going to be
- 9:12condemned by the the leaders, the chief priests of the people,
- 9:17and then turned over to the Romans.
- 9:20And so he's going to be judged by Herod after he's judged by
- 9:24Pilate. And Pilate judges him again at
- 9:27the end and ultimately condemns him.
- 9:29He's going to be scourged. He's going to be plated with
- 9:33that crown of thorns, then LED away to the crucifixion site,
- 9:37probably 70 to 75% of the Christian population in the
- 9:40world. When they go to Jerusalem, they
- 9:43will go to a place right here called the Church of the Holy
- 9:46Sepulchre, where they believe Golgotha was the the site.
- 9:50This is their traditional Calvary site, where Jesus was
- 9:55both crucified, buried and resurrected.
- 9:57Here, to the northwest of the city, there's a group of
- 10:05Protestants and and many members of the church who go over to
- 10:08Jerusalem. They tended to prefer the
- 10:10feeling associated with the Garden Tomb area, which is here
- 10:14a little more to the north and a little bit to the West of the
- 10:18Temple Mount as the crucifixion site.
- 10:21The reality is, is this whole region up here has quarries, and
- 10:26we know that Jesus is going to be buried in the tomb of Joseph
- 10:30of Arimathea, and it's a brand new tomb that's never had
- 10:34anybody in it yet. And so it's probably an active
- 10:38quarry site. Well, we've got lots of options.
- 10:41We're not just limited to two. There are other things.
- 10:44The point is, the Holy Ghost doesn't usually testify of a
- 10:48location as much as he testifies of an event.
- 10:52And the event that is so significant, the most
- 10:56significant event in the history of our world, is that momentous
- 11:01occasion on that Sunday morning when Jesus arose from the dead
- 11:07and broke the bands of death and rose triumphant from the grave.
- 11:12Now what does this have to do with us here now in the latter
- 11:17days, as you prepare for Easter this week, we would invite you
- 11:23to spare a thought or two at least for the Lord Jesus Christ
- 11:28on on each of the days for you and your family and your loved
- 11:32ones to to just quietly contemplate what was it that he
- 11:36experienced on that day and what did he go through.
- 11:39My wife and I taught our children these different events
- 11:44and had had pictures of the different stories lined up with
- 11:49tape on the wall. And we tried to help our
- 11:52children understand the significance of each day.
- 11:55And it was a it was a wonderful experience of many years ago
- 12:00when one of our sons, Jacob, he was a young child at the time.
- 12:06It was actually Easter morning, Sunday morning.
- 12:09Our little Jarrett was a baby at the time began crying in his
- 12:14crib. It was it was early early Sunday
- 12:16morning. I don't know the exact time but
- 12:19there the light was just barely starting to come from from the
- 12:23east and I went into their bedroom, the boys bedroom to
- 12:28comfort little Jarrett and I picked him up and started
- 12:32dancing with him to calm him down.
- 12:33And I I looked up onto the bunk bed and noticed that my Jacob
- 12:39was sitting up in bed, leaning against the wall.
- 12:41And it it kind of took me back. I was kind of a little bit
- 12:44scared, to be honest with you at first.
- 12:46Wait, what are you doing? I said, Jacob, what's going on?
- 12:50And he said, Dad, do you think Jesus is resurrected by this
- 12:54time on Easter? And I thought, yeah, according
- 13:00to John's account, he rose. Well, Mary goes to the tomb
- 13:03while it was yet dark. I said, yeah, I'll I'll bet he's
- 13:06resurrected by now. And little Jacob said, oh good.
- 13:10I wanted to be awake when Jesus was resurrected.
- 13:14I wanted to be able to think about that.
- 13:16Brothers and sisters, this is this is more than just a a
- 13:20scripture story. It's more than just a a fancy
- 13:24ideal. This is reality.
- 13:27Death has been broken from inside hell and the bands of
- 13:33hell and captivity and bondage have been burst from inside.
- 13:39Jesus, our Lord and Savior for whatever reason couldn't defeat
- 13:45death and hell. That off awful monster as Jacob
- 13:48refers to it from up in heaven or even from from on earth just
- 13:54in a normal setting. He had to descend into both of
- 13:59them and then break them. Break the bands of both death
- 14:02and hell for us, and His promise is sure.
- 14:07And now our job is can we trust Him as we move forward in faith
- 14:11on His covenant path. So our prayer is that the Lord
- 14:15will bless you this week as you spare some thoughts for the Lord
- 14:19and contemplate what He was going through on each of the
- 14:22days leading up to this beautiful event.
- 14:25I want you to know that I know that He lives, and He sits
- 14:29enthroned in Yonder heavens, on the right hand of our Father.
- 14:34OK. So as I talked about a little
- 14:36bit earlier, I'm going to talk about the significance of
- 14:40Passover as it relates to Holy Week, the events of Holy Week
- 14:44and Easter. Now before we do that, I want to
- 14:47introduce you into a little bit about the significance of
- 14:50Passover as it would have been celebrated the very first time
- 14:54during the time of Moses. So keep in mind that Passover is
- 14:58by the Jews still celebrated today most significant feast and
- 15:03event in recorded scripture. It sets the the setting for the
- 15:08entire stage, so to speak, for Israel to come and become a
- 15:12people. And so this story is extremely
- 15:15significant. So every year when they're
- 15:17celebrating Passover, they are remembering these events of the
- 15:22story of the Exodus. So let's first talk a little bit
- 15:25about the calendar because that will help us better understand
- 15:28it. According to the Bible, in
- 15:31Exodus, the Lord commanded the people to take a lamb on the
- 15:3610th day of the month to be without blemish.
- 15:39And then for the next four days, they're to take the lamb into
- 15:45their home, to have it. And in essence, I mean, you can
- 15:49kind of imagine this, taking this little cute lamb into your
- 15:52home. The family has it there.
- 15:54The kids begin to learn to love it.
- 15:57It lives with them. It's in there, you know, maybe
- 16:00sleeping in the same room as the kids, and then all of a sudden
- 16:04they have to kill it. So there's this connection
- 16:07that's made to the lamb while it's living in the home and then
- 16:11on the 14th day, in the the evening just before the 15th.
- 16:17And remember that the the Jews, the way that they count their
- 16:20calendar is or their day, the day starts in the evening.
- 16:24So in essence, in the evening just before the 15th, so
- 16:29generally like 2 to 5:00 or so is when they kill the lambs.
- 16:34And then just at the start is when they have the Passover and
- 16:40they would have the Passover. And the first time that they're
- 16:44having the Passover, because this is only happens the first
- 16:46time, they don't do this. Every other time they would take
- 16:49the blood of the lamb, they would put it on the doorposts,
- 16:53and that was to be as a sign to the destroying Angel that it
- 16:57would pass by them and not kill the first born of that home.
- 17:01And so they are having this meal, and the meal would include
- 17:05unleavened bread, bitter herbs, and then also the lamb, and
- 17:11according to later Jewish tradition, still today wine as
- 17:16well. Now the bitter herbs would
- 17:17represent the bitterness, the bondage of slavery, to help them
- 17:20remember that connection of being in bondage.
- 17:24And then you have the unleavened bread, and that was to represent
- 17:27the fact that you have unleavened bread.
- 17:29And they had to flee out of Egypt.
- 17:32So they're they're leaving in haste so they don't have time to
- 17:35let their bread rise. And another thing that we should
- 17:38say is unleavened bread was often connected with a symbol of
- 17:42incorruption because unleavened bread doesn't mold as much.
- 17:47It lasts a lot longer than like leavened bread.
- 17:50So there's this symbol of incorruption versus corruption
- 17:54with unleavened bread versus leavened bread.
- 17:57And then they would also have the lamb.
- 17:58And the lamb obviously is connected with the blood that is
- 18:02put on the doorpost. One thing I also didn't mention
- 18:05is that during this time when they're taken into the home, the
- 18:09lamb taken into the home, they would also clean their homes of
- 18:14all 11 products because for seven days from the 15th, which
- 18:19goes on further here for seven days, they would not eat any 11
- 18:24products. So they wouldn't have it in
- 18:26their homes and they also wouldn't eat any 11 products.
- 18:29So they first had to prepare their home.
- 18:31And that's actually what we come up with.
- 18:33That's why we have spring cleaning is because of Passover.
- 18:36So now let's talk about some of the significance as it relates
- 18:39to the events of Holy Week. I have a YouTube channel called
- 18:43Messages of Christ, and I have a whole series that I've done on
- 18:47each of these events. So if you're interested, I will
- 18:50link those down below and also up above to be able to show you
- 18:54those videos. If you would like to watch those
- 18:56videos, I have a video on each of the different events within
- 19:00Holy Week. So you can watch the video for
- 19:03Monday, for Tuesday, for Wednesday so you can be able to
- 19:06go through. Now we have according to the
- 19:08synoptic gospels which would be Matthew, Mark and Luke.
- 19:12Jesus comes in on the 10th day, or five days before Passover.
- 19:17So Passover is right here. So five days before this is the
- 19:21triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Now think about the significance
- 19:28of this. Jesus is coming in into
- 19:31Jerusalem on the exact same day that all of the Jews are
- 19:36beginning to prepare for Passover.
- 19:38It hasn't happened yet, but they're beginning to prepare for
- 19:41Passover, and specifically five days before on the 10th day of
- 19:45the month, they are selecting the lamb that will then be
- 19:50sacrificed for the Passover. So what does Jesus do?
- 19:55He comes, rides into the city of Jerusalem, and is in essence
- 19:59symbolically chosen by the people to be their Lamb of God.
- 20:05And then what does he do right after the the episode of the
- 20:10Triumphal entry he goes into? His father's house, the temple.
- 20:15And he cleanses the temple. And remember what we talked
- 20:18about here? What it what is the lamb do.
- 20:20The lamb is brought into the home of the people.
- 20:23It stays. For the next four days they
- 20:26clean the home of all leaven products, which again leaven is
- 20:30a symbol of corruption. So Jesus comes into his father's
- 20:34house. He cleanses the temple of
- 20:37iniquity of from the money changers.
- 20:40And then after that we know that the next few days he also spends
- 20:45most of his time teaching, at least in the first part of the
- 20:48week in the temple teaching. And so again the significant
- 20:52aspect, but that the lambs are brought into the homes, Jesus
- 20:55comes into his Father's home and teaches.
- 20:59We then have that according to the synoptic gospels, which
- 21:03would again be Matthew, Mark and Luke, the Passover is the Last
- 21:08Supper. So I want you to think about
- 21:10this from the perspective of the apostles.
- 21:13They have been celebrating the Passover for many years.
- 21:17Every single year in the springtime they would be
- 21:19celebrating this and the significance that they know
- 21:22what's going to happen. It's kind of like when you go to
- 21:25sacrament, you know exactly what's going to happen.
- 21:26And imagine if you were in the sacrament and all of a sudden
- 21:29the Bishop just changed the ordinance of the sacrament.
- 21:33That's what it felt like for the apostles when they see Jesus all
- 21:37of a sudden change the Passover. For them, the Passover was the
- 21:40symbol of redemption, the story of Exodus, and Jesus infuses
- 21:45into it the meaning of his atonement and the significance
- 21:51of what he will be doing that evening and the next day, and
- 21:55then also the resurrection. Now they're having the Passover,
- 22:00and as I mentioned, there would be bread and wine as part of it.
- 22:03And he takes the unleavened bread, which is a symbol of
- 22:07incorruption, and he takes the wine, which is also a symbol of
- 22:12joy. And he now makes them into this
- 22:15symbol of his atonement. So he's connecting the Exodus
- 22:19story with the sacrament. And I want you to think about
- 22:23that, that every single time you partake of the sacrament you are
- 22:28remembering the story of the Exodus.
- 22:31And that just as Israel was redeemed anciently, so you too
- 22:37can be redeemed because of the atonement of Jesus Christ.
- 22:41And then we have again according to Matthew, Mark and Luke, we
- 22:45have that. The timing is that when Jesus is
- 22:47in the Garden of Gethsemane, that would be the time it
- 22:50because it's in the evening right here just before the 15th.
- 22:54And actually the 15th has started because it's now
- 22:57sundown. He is suffering in Gethsemane at
- 23:01the exact time when all Jews would be celebrating and
- 23:05remembering the destroying Angel passing by.
- 23:09Think about it, that the blood is put on the doorpost and it's
- 23:12the sign of the blood of the lamb that the destroying Angel
- 23:16passes by. And so Christ is in Gethsemane
- 23:20and because of his shed blood, we are able to have the
- 23:24destroying Angel pass by us so that we can live again.
- 23:30And then according to John and remember that in the scriptures,
- 23:34they're not as concerned about history like we are in the
- 23:38aspect that they don't, they don't feel like everything has
- 23:41to be exact. If you remember, Tyler and
- 23:43Taylor have talked a lot about this of of the Greek perspective
- 23:47and the Hebrew perspective. And the Hebrew perspective is
- 23:50often very, very symbolic. And so John and we don't know
- 23:55who is right. What is it Matthew, Mark and
- 23:58Luke? Or is it John but John to be
- 24:00able to show the emphasis that Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God,
- 24:05He shifts his calendar by one day.
- 24:07And what that does is instead of having the Last Supper during
- 24:12the Passover, it actually puts the crucifixion during Passover.
- 24:18So what that means is, as we talked about, that the lambs
- 24:22would be killed just before you would start the Passover meal.
- 24:27And so Jesus, what time does he die?
- 24:30According to the Gospels, he dies at 3:00 PM, and that would
- 24:34be the time when the lambs are being killed in the temple.
- 24:39And so Jesus dies on the cross at the exact moment when the
- 24:43lambs are being slain. And then we have the Passover
- 24:47and this fact that the cross in in many ways you could say it
- 24:51literally becomes the door that the blood that was put on the
- 24:55doorway that allowed the destroying Angel to pass by.
- 24:59Now we have the cross that is it's almost like our gateway,
- 25:02the entrance, that the cross, the death of Christ is the way
- 25:07that the destroying Angel passes by.
- 25:09And just as the blood was put on the doorpost, the blood would
- 25:12have come down the cross and marked that cross to say that
- 25:18now because of this, this doorway, this entrance, we are
- 25:23able to go back into the presence of God.
- 25:26Now it doesn't end there. They would have the Feast of
- 25:29Unleavened Bread for the next seven days, which we won't talk
- 25:31a lot about. But then Christ is resurrected
- 25:35and it's interesting He specifically is resurrected.
- 25:39According to the Gospel of John, he is resurrected at the same
- 25:44time when the first Fruits, which is one of the other.
- 25:47There's three main feasts during the springtime, Passover,
- 25:51Unleavened Bread and 1st Fruits. And so Jesus is resurrected at
- 25:57the same time when what they would be doing is they would
- 26:00take the barley because that would be the first harvest of
- 26:04the of the spring. They would cut some of the
- 26:05barley, bring it into the temple and offer it to the Lord.
- 26:09Saying this is our first fruits that we are offering to God, and
- 26:14in essence that's what Jesus Christ is.
- 26:16He is the first fruits as Paul says.
- 26:19He is the first fruits of them that rose from the dead and he
- 26:23becomes that symbol of being the very first.
- 26:28Now how does this relate to us? I want you to think about the
- 26:31significance that every Sunday you partake of the sacrament
- 26:36that is directly connected with the Passover and the Exodus
- 26:42story. That as you partake of that
- 26:44bread and really wine, though we do water today, but it would
- 26:50have been wine, that you are remembering the Passover meal.
- 26:55And notice that the bitter herbs, remember we talked about
- 26:58bitter herbs. They're not there.
- 27:00They're gone. They're missing.
- 27:02And to me that's a beautiful symbol, that the bitterness of
- 27:05the Exodus story, the slavery, the bondage is taken away
- 27:09because of the Lamb of God, and instead it's replaced with the
- 27:14cup of wine, the cup of joy, the cup of redemption.
- 27:19And that is what we can do every Sabbath day as we partake of the
- 27:23sacrament, is we have this beautiful opportunity to
- 27:25remember that we, just like ancient Israel, are redeemed
- 27:30from the destroying Angel of death and sin.
- 27:33And that powerful message that just as the ancient Israelites
- 27:38were freed from bondage, so too can we think about the Book of
- 27:43Mormon, that it always makes that connection.
- 27:45There's time and time again where they say, remember,
- 27:49remember your forefathers, remember the story of the
- 27:52Exodus. Remember Nephi uses.
- 27:54He says because of this, we will have the same power, and that's
- 27:59what you're doing. Every Sabbath is remembering
- 28:02that because that story took place and the Lord was willing
- 28:06and able and powerful enough to free them, he will also free
- 28:11you. And that is the power and the
- 28:13beauty of this message of Passover and the events of Holy
- 28:19Week.
